SEOUL - Cyndi Lauper, an American pop star of the 1980s, has canceled her planned concerts in South Korea to mark the 30th anniversary of her debut solo album, a local organizer said Sunday. Lauper planned to hold two concerts at Seoul’s Olympic Park on Jan. 23-24 as part of the “She’s So Unusual: 30th Anniversary Tour” that began in June 2013 and has taken her to 56 cities around the world. “The decision has been made in consultation with the artist,” YESCOM Entertainment said, without giving a specific reason. “It has been checked and no sufficient evidence was found to confirm what was reported,” Jusuf Kalla told a press conference at Surabaya airport from where the ill-fated plane departed. Kalla said there were 15 ships and 30 aircraft searching the area. “It is not an easy operation in the sea, especially in bad weather like this,” he said. An Indonesian helicopter searching for the missing AirAsia jetliner saw two oily spots in the water Monday, and an Australian search plane spotted objects elsewhere in the Java Sea, but it was too early to know whether either was connected to the aircraft and its 162 passengers and crew. In any case, officials saw little reason to believe AirAsia Flight 8501 met anything but a grim fate after it disappeared from radar Sunday morning over the Java Sea.

SINGARAJA - Following the feast days of Galungan and Kuningan this year, some tourist attractions in Buleleng seemed to be thronged by visitors. Most of the visitors were local and domestic travelers. One such attraction was the hot springs at Munduk hamlet, Banjar village, Banjar subdistrict. Over the holidays, the hot springs, which are believed to have healing powers, were quite crowded with over 1000 visitors, mostly from Jakarta and Surabay with very few foreign tourits.. Banjar Hot Spring Manager, Ida Kade Mangku, said the tourist visits on the Galungan and Kuningan feast days were slightly less than last year possibly due to recent heavy rains.. “Despite being crowded this year, it is nonethelss less than last year. We hope there will be more visitors
for New Years celebrations” he said. There were also crowds at the other attractions in Buleleng such as at the project area of Titab Reservoir, Busungbiu subdistrict. NEGARA - A storm occurred in the Straits of Bali over past week, has caused fishermen in Jembrana go home empty-handed. Such conditions caused fishermen to shore faster than usual, prioritizing their safety over potential catches. “We have been going home without fish for two days due to the thunderstorm (at sea),” said Andi, one of the crew members of the Purse Seine fishing boat from Pengambengan, Monday (Dec 29). As a result of the storm, the boat had troble navigating its way home. Other than being tossed by sea waves, our visibility was also limited due to heavy rain. At that time, a shoal of fish usually seen on the surface suddenly vanished. The crews of fishing boast were also reluctant to throw their nets, afraid that their nets would be damaged due to crashing waves. According to Andi, the storm at sea was difficult to predict. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dutch scientists use smell to recreate JFK, Diana and other famous deaths BREDA, Netherlands - Dutch scientists are recreating the deaths of some of the world’s most famous personalities by reconstructing their last moments using scents and sounds. From the sweet smell of Jacqueline Kennedy’s perfume mingled with the scent of John F. Kennedy’s blood to Whitney Houston’s last drug-fuelled moments in a Beverly Hills bathtub, scientists at Breda university say they offer visitors a unique, if somewhat macabre, historical snapshot. “We all have seen the images of JFK’s assassination, but what did it smell like?” asks Frederik Duerinck, from the communication and multimedia design faculty of Breda’s Avans university of applied sciences. To find out, visitors with a sense of the morbid are invited to lie in a series of four silver metal boxes similar to those found in a morgue. The boxes, which are pitch-dark inside, are rigged with pipes leading to bottles containing pressurised smells. A soundtrack is played and on queue different scents are released into the box to recreate a specific “final moment.” For around five minutes, visitors can relive the smells and sounds believed to have surrounded four people whose deaths are etched into the world’s collective memory: Kennedy (1963); Princess Diana (1997); Moamer Kadhafi (2011) and Whitney Houston (2012). For instance, those wanting to experience Houston’s final moments are transported to a bathtub at the upmarket Beverly Hills hotel where the diva died in February 2012 at age 48. Avalanche, dozens of vehicles get stuck
GIANYAR - Disaster alerts were declared for the entire region of Gianyar following disasters hitting the regions. After heavy rains engulfed Gianyar over the past few days, people were evaluated on Sunday (Dec 28), dozens of vehicles were stuck after an avalanche occurred that closed the road between Buahan - Payangan. 12 hours of rain on Saturday made soil conditions unstable.
The evacuation resulting form the avalanche on the Buahan-Payangan road section took up to 6 hours. Officers of the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) deployed early in the morning were only able to reopen the road around 07:00 on Sunday morning. Dozens of vehicles were stuck at Buahan because the road had a quite steep terrain. As a result, many vehicles from Buahan wishing to go to Payangan
were trapped by the avalanche. Aside from the avalanche, the Payangan area also suffered damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. The Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) intake pump was flooded by mud. Turkish cargo ship sinks in Adriatic, 2 dead, 4 missing
ROME — A Turkish cargo ship collided with another merchant vessel and sank near a foggy Italian port in the northern Adriatic on Sunday, killing two crew members and leaving four others missing in cold, rough seas, officials said. Coast Guard Cmdr. Franco Maltese said six crew members were initially rescued and brought to the port of Marina di Ravenna;
one of those rescued later died in the hospital. He said searchers spotted what was believed to be a corpse in the choppy waters, and Ravenna’s fire department confirmed that that body was found and brought ashore. BEIJING — Connections to Google Inc.’s popular email service have been blocked in China amid efforts by the government to limit access to the company’s services. Records from Google’s Transparency Report show online traffic from China to Gmail dropped to nearly zero on Saturday, although there was a tiny pickup on Monday. Calls to the regulator, the China Internet Information Office, were unanswered Monday. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying did not confirm the block but said China welcomes foreign investors who legally conduct business in China. Google closed its mainland China search engine in 2009, saying it would no longer cooperate with the country’s censors. That followed hacking attacks traced
to China aimed at stealing the company’s operating code and breaking into email accounts. Since then, access to Google services has been periodically limited or blocked, possibly in an effort to encourage Chinese users of Google products to shift to domestic companies willing to cooperate with the government. Web access to Gmail has been blocked since June, according to Greatfire.org, a China-based advocacy group for Internet freedom, but users had been able to access the service through mobile apps or third-party email software such as Microsoft Outlook until the current block. KUALA LUMPUR - Shares in AirAsia, Southeast Asia’s biggest budget airline, lost almost eight percent in Kuala Lumpur on Monday after one of its jets disappeared with 162 people on board. The firm slumped 12 percent to 2.60 ringgit at the open but recovered slightly to sit at 2.71 ringgit, still down 7.82 percent, at 0600 GMT. The Airbus disappeared en route to Singapore from Surabaya in Indonesia’s east Java after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather. Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency said it is likely at the bottom of the sea. A local broker told AFP investors were continuing to sell AirAsia shares. But selling pressure appeared to be abating as they digested the fact that the missing plane belonged to the Malaysian firm’s Indonesian unit. Shukor Yusof, founder of aviation research firm Endau Analytics, said investors and creditors would remain firmly behind AirAsia and its CEO Tony Fernandes, who transformed a floundering carrier into Asia’s most

German central bank chief: cheap oil is stimulus
BERLIN — The president of Germany’s central bank is questioning the need for the European Central Bank to embark on a new bond-buying program when the continent is being “gifted a stimulus program” by low oil prices. The ECB is considering whether and how to offer more stimulus for the sluggish eurozone economy, perhaps in the form of large-scale purchases of government bonds — not a popular idea in Germany.

Coordinator of King Saguna House of Shell, I Made Kanan Jaya, is now trying creatively to make lampshade craft by using shell waste. The lampshade using marine shell was made after many foreign travelers got interested in purchasing the results of his shell crafts. In addition to lampshade, Kanan Jaya admitted that he had made various forms of crafts such as turtle ornament up to bowl, tray and other ceremonial tools. However, these items had a limited market because they were only used by Balinese people. For that reason, he began pioneering to create various lampshades as having a wider market. “Lampshade craft can be accepted by various people, especially foreign travelers,” he said. A lampshade was sold for IDR 200,000. He claimed that in addition to displaying them in art shops he also received the orders from customers who were
interested. The process of making could take three to five days for making a decorative lighting. “The making is rather long because it uses fiber and should be dried using sunlight. On cloudy day like today, it will take much longer,” he said. Associated with raw materials, he claimed to never find difficulty because the shells used to make the crafts were abundantly available on Serangan Beach. He admitted to using this type of shell living in the mangrove forests that frequently appeared when sea waves reached the Serangan Beach. “On the next temple ceremony at Sakenan Temple, the craft will also be sold as a typical craft of Serangan Island,” he added. Shell craft has become the source of income for the people of Serangan. Meanwhile, as planned the shell craft would also made a museum to introduce the types of shells on the Island of Serangan including the protected shells. Kanan Jaya added that people who came to Serangan Island would not only buy shell crafts but could also directly learn more about the shells and how to make a craft. “We started to try in order to be able to make educational tour where visiting traveler will not only buy the craft products, but can also learn more about the shells,” he concluded. Sulawesi. “There are 100 foreigners in Poso, from ISIS (IS) group. If (they) cannot do jihad in Syria, (they launch) jihad in Poso,” the minister noted. Kumolo, a senior politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), said the military will intensify security measures in border areas to prevent IS members from infiltrating into Indonesia. The Indonesian government has zero tolerance for groups such as IS that will harm national harmony and unity, he noted. “They will be crushed by the TNI. S. Korea officials face punishment over ‘nut rage’
SEOUL, South Korea — Four South Korean officials will be punished for improper conduct during an investigation into a former Korean Air Lines executive who forced a flight to return over a bag of macadamia nuts, the Transport Ministry said Monday. The punishments could include dismissals, salary reductions or formal reprimands, according to Shin Eun-chul, the official who headed the ministry’s internal investigation. The ministry also issued warnings to four other lower-ranking officials who were involved in the investigation. Earlier this month, then-Korean Air executive Cho Hyunah, the daughter of the airline’s chairman, forced a plane that was preparing to take off in New York to return to the gate and kicked off the chief flight attendant because she had been served nuts

JAKARTA - Vice President Jusuf M. Kalla and Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Puan Maharani visit Surabaya, East Java, on Monday, to meet the relatives of the passengers aboard the missing AirAsia aircraft. “The visit is also to review the condition of the crisis center at Juanda Airport in Surabaya,” Husain Abdullah, a spokesman of the vice president, noted on Monday. Kalla along with his spouse, Mufidah Kalla, and Maharani will leave for Surabaya at 1 p.m. local time. Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan also join the entourage. The Singapore-bound plane, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact a few minutes after taking off from Juanda International Airport on Sunday morning, and was believed to have gone missing in the waters between Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan Provinces. The AirAsia aircraft, an Airbus 320-200, carried 155 passengers and
seven crew members. Based on the data received from the Angkasa Pura I airport management company, the plane has two pilots - Captain Iriyanto and First Officer (FO) Remi Emmanuel Plesel, four cabin crew members - Wanti Setiawati, Khairunnisa Haidar Fauzi, Oscar Desano, and Wismoyo Ari Prambudi, along with a technician, Saiful Rakhmad. According to AirAsia Indonesia, seven foreigners are among the passengers of the missing plane. The foreign nationals comprise three Koreans, a Singaporean, a British, a Malaysian, and a First Officer (FO) from France. “While 155 others, including crew members, are Indonesian na-
tionals,” she stated. In the meantime, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) is focusing its search efforts on East Belitung waters to find the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 on Monday, the second day of the search and rescue operations. “We are conducting search operations in the east off Belitung Island, in accordance with the last contact made by the aircraft,” Basarnas’ Operations Director Air Commodore S.B. Supriyadi noted on Monday. Basarnas will conduct combing operations in the waters off east Belitung Island to the southeast. “Later, we will also comb the coastal areas of West Kalimantan,” he added. BANDA ACEH - Overwhelmed by fear, members of the main gay rights group in the Indonesian town of Banda Aceh started burning piles of documents outside their headquarters in late October, worried that the sharia police would raid them at any moment. Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh had weeks earlier passed an anti-homosexuality law that punishes anyone caught having gay sex with 100 lashes. Amnesty International criticised it, saying it would add to a climate of homophobia and fear. “We are more afraid, of course,” said a 31-year-old transgender person who, along with three other members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) group, Violet Grey, burned the pamphlets, group records and other papers. “As an institution, Violet Grey went as far as removing all documents related to LGBT. We burned them all,” said the group member, who declined to be identified out of fear of being arrested. The province’s tight-knit gay community, estimated by some at about 1,000 people, has become increasingly marginalized since Aceh was allowed to adopt Islamic sharia law as its legal code. Aceh was granted special regional autonomy as part of a 2005 peace agreement ending a threedecade old separatist insurgency. After the anti-homosexuality law was passed in September, Violet Grey began warning its 47 members to keep a lower profile and for gay and transgender people to avoid going out together as couples in public. No one has been arrested under the law, which Aceh officials say will not
be enforced until the end of 2015 to allow residents time to prepare for it. But this has not eased the fear in the gay community. Even before the law, life was not easy for gay people in the most religiously conservative part of Indonesia, the north of Sumatra island where Islam first arrived in the archipelago. The gay community is a target of regular harassment from sharia police and residents. Transgender people are particularly vulnerable because of the difficulty of concealing themselves in public. In 2011, a transgender make-up artist was stabbed to death in Banda Aceh after she held up a stick in response to a man’s taunts. Aceh authorities defend the law, saying it does not violate human rights because gay people are free to live together but just can not have sex. The law also sets out punishment for various acts apart from gay sex including unmarried people engaging in displays of affection, adultery and underage sex. “It is forbidden because in the sharia context, the act is vile,” Syahrizal Abbas, the head of Aceh’s sharia department, which drew up the law, told Reuters. “It brings unhealthy psychological impact to human development, and it will affect the community.” Outside Aceh, Indonesia is generally tolerant of gay people, particularly in urban areas like Jakarta. Engaging in homosexual acts is not a crime under Indonesia’s national criminal code but remains taboo in many conservative parts of the country, which has the world’s largest Muslim population. (rtr)
JAKARTA - An Indonesian family of 10 said Monday they had a miraculous escape when they arrived too late to catch AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which went missing shortly after takeoff en route to Singapore. Christianawati, 36, said the 10 of them, who included her family, her mother and her younger brother’s family, were heading to Singapore to celebrate New Year. The six adults and four children were originally booked on the 7:30 am flight but AirAsia moved them to Flight QZ8501 scheduled for two hours earlier. “They emailed and called us on
December 15 and 16 to inform us but we missed those calls,” Christianawati said. “So we arrived at the airport to check in for the 7:30am flight but were told our flights had been rescheduled to 5:30am and we were late. Of course we were angry,” she said. “While the new tickets were being reissued, we heard that the earlier plane had crashed so we cancelled our flights immediately,” she said. “I was shocked to hear about it and cried. Maybe it is all God’s plan that my family and I were not on the flight. It was a blessing in disguise,” she said.(afp)

London - Former Formula 1 driver Adrian Sutil is interested in a move to the World Endurance Championship and wants to race in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Sutil’s F1 career has stalled following Sauber’s decision to replace him and 2014 team-mate Esteban Gutierrez with ex-Caterham racer Marcus Ericsson and Williams reserve driver Felipe Nasr next season. Ferrari recently announced that Gutierrez will become its test and reserve driver for 2015, but Sutil will likely be forced to consider options outside of F1 for next year. “There are plenty of opportunities in categories that are really interesting - it doesn’t need to only be Formula 1,” the German told Autosport. “I’ve had my normal plan disrupted so I have to look at several categories. I’m very open. “I look forward to whatever happens. If I don’t drive next year, I’m still a happy man. “Maybe the year after Haas is coming to Formula 1, and this is an interesting project. The WEC could [also] be an interesting project. “Everyone is saying good words about it, and that’s how I feel about it. The cars are quick and probably similar to Formula 1. “I definitely want to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans in my career, and I’m looking at certain Formula 1 drivers who did that step and are very happy. “There are manufacturers there and that’s good for the future for a driver - you need a partner who is reliable and you can make a long-term contract [with] and then really work and improve. “I’m 31 and I could still go quite a few more years in Formula 1, but I’ve been in Formula 1 and there’s a time where you have to go somewhere else.”

LONDON — Chelsea retained its three-point lead at the midpoint of the Premier League season on Sunday despite being held to a draw by Southampton, thanks to Manchester City collapsing against struggling Burnley. After Eden Hazard recovered a 1-1 draw for Chelsea at fourth-place Southampton, defending champion City threw away a 2-0 lead at home to draw 2-2 with 19th-place Burnley. On a day when 18 of the 20 teams were in action less than 48 hours after playing on Friday in this traditionally packed Christmas fixture program, the top four all drew. Manchester United missed an opportunity to make ground on the pacesetters, remaining seven points behind City in third place after being held 0-0 at Tottenham. But Arsenal dislodged West Ham from fifth place by winning their London derby 2-1 after Santi Cazorla earned and converted a penalty and Danny Welbeck scored the second. At the other end of the standings, Leicester remains bottom but raised its hopes of survival by beating Hull 1-0 for its first victory since September. MADRID - Spain forward Fernando Torres has agreed to return to Atletico Madrid on loan from AC Milan until the end of the 2015-16 season, seven and a half years after leaving his boyhood club, the La Liga champions said on Monday. Torres, 30, has been struggling for goals since joining Chelsea from Liverpool in 2011 and moved to Milan on loan in August. Chelsea and Milan agreed on Saturday to make the switch permanent, paving the way for Torres to be loaned to Atletico, where he will hope to resurrect his stuttering career under inspirational coach Diego Simeone. “At last back home. Chelsea, Man City held as Arsenal wins in EPL
LONDON — Chelsea retained its three-point lead at the midpoint of the Premier League season on Sunday despite being held to a draw by Southampton, thanks to Manchester City collapsing against struggling Burnley. After Eden Hazard recovered a 1-1 draw for Chelsea at fourth-place Southampton, defending champion City threw away a 2-0 lead at home to draw 2-2 with 19th-place Burnley. On a day when 18 of the 20 teams were in action less than 48 hours after playing on Friday in this traditionally packed Christmas fixture program, the top four all drew. Manchester United missed an opportunity to make ground on the pacesetters, remaining seven points behind City in third place after being held 0-0 at Tottenham. But Arsenal dislodged West Ham from fifth place by winning their London derby 2-1 after Santi Cazorla earned and converted a penalty and Danny Welbeck scored the second. At the other end of the standings, Leicester remains bottom but raised its hopes of survival by beating Hull 1-0 for its first victory since September. Hull is only out of the relegation zone due to its superior goal difference over Crystal Palace, which drew 0-0 with fellow struggler Queens Park Rangers.
The most goals of the day came in a clash of mid-table teams at St. James’ Park, with Jack Colback scoring his first Newcastle goal to clinch a 3-2 win over Everton. The remaining fixture from round 19 is on Monday when Liverpool hosts Swansea. Unlike last season, Liverpool is out of the title race as it sits in 10th place. A big surprise looked possible at Southampton when Chelsea conceded in the 17th minute as Sadio Mane raced onto a pass from Dusan Tadic and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. MADRID - Spain forward Fernando Torres has agreed to return to Atletico Madrid on loan from AC Milan until the end of the 2015-16 season, seven and a half years after leaving his boyhood club, the La Liga champions said on Monday. Torres, 30, has been struggling for goals since joining Chelsea from Liverpool in 2011 and moved to Milan on loan in August. Chelsea and Milan agreed on Saturday to make the switch permanent, paving the way for Torres to be loaned to Atletico, where he will hope to resurrect his stuttering career under inspirational coach Diego Simeone. “At last back home. London - Former Formula 1 driver Adrian Sutil is interested in a move to the World Endurance Championship and wants to race in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Sutil’s F1 career has stalled following Sauber’s decision to replace him and 2014 team-mate Esteban Gutierrez with ex-Caterham racer Marcus Ericsson and Williams reserve driver Felipe Nasr next season. Ferrari recently announced that Gutierrez will become its test and reserve driver for 2015, but Sutil will likely be forced to consider options outside of F1 for next year. “There are plenty of opportunities in categories that are really interesting - it doesn’t need to only be Formula 1,” the German told Autosport. “I’ve had my normal plan disrupted so I have to look at several categories. I’m very open. “I look forward to whatever happens. If I don’t drive next year, I’m still a happy man. “Maybe the year after Haas is coming to Formula 1, and this is an interesting project. The WEC could [also] be an interesting project. “Everyone is saying good words about it, and that’s how I feel about it. The cars are quick and probably similar to Formula 1. “I definitely want to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans in my career, and I’m looking at certain Formula 1 drivers who did that step and are very happy. “There are manufacturers there and that’s good for the future for a driver - you need a partner who is reliable and you can make a long-term contract [with] and then really work and improve. “I’m 31 and I could still go quite a few more years in Formula 1, but I’ve been in Formula 1 and there’s a time where you have to go somewhere else.”

S. Korea officials face punishment over ‘nut rage’
SEOUL, South Korea — Four South Korean officials will be punished for improper conduct during an investigation into a former Korean Air Lines executive who forced a flight to return over a bag of macadamia nuts, the Transport Ministry said Monday. The punishments could include dismissals, salary reductions or formal reprimands, according to Shin Eun-chul, the official who headed the ministry’s internal investigation. The ministry also issued warnings to four other lower-ranking officials who were involved in the investigation. Earlier this month, then-Korean Air executive Cho Hyunah, the daughter of the airline’s chairman, forced a plane that was preparing to take off in New York to return to the gate and kicked off the chief flight attendant because she had been served nuts
in a bag, not on a plate. The ministry has been under fire following revelations that some officials leaked information and committed other improper acts during the investigation. One of the officials to be reviewed for punishment was arrested Friday over allegations that he leaked information about the ministry’s probe to a current Korean Air executive, surnamed Yeo, through several telephone conversations and text messages. The announcement by Assistant Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah on Monday marks a setback for Liberia, which has seen the number of cases stabilize somewhat after having been the hardest hit country in West Africa. Nyenswah blamed the flare-up on a number of factors including people
going in and out of the country and traditional practices such as the washing of bodies. Nearly 3,400 people have died from Ebola in Liberia over the past year with nearly 8,000 cases, though health officials say the situation has improved especially in the capital, Monrovia. Malaysia-based AirAsia’s loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March with 239 people aboard, and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine, which killed all 298 passengers and crew. “Until today, we have never lost a life,” AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes, who founded the lowcost carrier in 2001, told reporters in Jakarta airport. “But I think that any airline CEO who says he can guarantee that his airline is 100 percent safe, is not accurate.” He refused to address compensation issues or any changes that may be made to the airline as a result of this incident. “We have carried 220 million people up to this point,” he said.

Kalla and Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Puan Maharani visit Surabaya, East Java, on Monday, to meet the relatives of the passengers aboard the missing AirAsia aircraft. “The visit is also to review the condition of the crisis center at Juanda Airport in Surabaya,” Husain Abdullah, a spokesman of the vice president, noted on Monday. Kalla along with his spouse, Mufidah Kalla, and Maharani will leave for Surabaya at 1 p.m. local time. Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan also join the entourage. The Singapore-bound plane, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact a few minutes after taking off from Juanda International Airport on Sunday morning, and was believed to have gone missing in the waters between Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan Provinces. The AirAsia aircraft, an Airbus 320-200, carried 155 passengers and
seven crew members. Based on the data received from the Angkasa Pura I airport management company, the plane has two pilots - Captain Iriyanto and First Officer (FO) Remi Emmanuel Plesel, four cabin crew members - Wanti Setiawati, Khairunnisa Haidar Fauzi, Oscar Desano, and Wismoyo Ari Prambudi, along with a technician, Saiful Rakhmad. According to AirAsia Indonesia, seven foreigners are among the passengers of the missing plane. BANDA ACEH - Overwhelmed by fear, members of the main gay rights group in the Indonesian town of Banda Aceh started burning piles of documents outside their headquarters in late October, worried that the sharia police would raid them at any moment. Indonesia’s northernmost province of Aceh had weeks earlier passed an anti-homosexuality law that punishes anyone caught having gay sex with 100 lashes. Amnesty International criticised it, saying it would add to a climate of homophobia and fear. “We are more afraid, of course,” said a 31-year-old transgender person who, along with three other members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) group, Violet Grey, burned the pamphlets, group records and other papers. “As an institution, Violet Grey went as far as removing all documents related to LGBT. We burned them all,” said the group member, who declined to be identified out of fear of being arrested. The province’s tight-knit gay community, estimated by some at about 1,000 people, has become increasingly marginalized since Aceh was allowed to adopt Islamic sharia law as its legal code. Aceh was granted special regional autonomy as part of a 2005 peace agreement ending a threedecade old separatist insurgency. After the anti-homosexuality law was passed in September, Violet Grey began warning its 47 members to keep a lower profile and for gay and transgender people to avoid going out together as couples in public. No one has been arrested under the law, which Aceh officials say will not
be enforced until the end of 2015 to allow residents time to prepare for it. But this has not eased the fear in the gay community. Even before the law, life was not easy for gay people in the most religiously conservative part of Indonesia, the north of Sumatra island where Islam first arrived in the archipelago. The gay community is a target of regular harassment from sharia police and residents. Transgender people are particularly vulnerable because of the difficulty of concealing themselves in public. In 2011, a transgender make-up artist was stabbed to death in Banda Aceh after she held up a stick in response to a man’s taunts. Aceh authorities defend the law, saying it does not violate human rights because gay people are free to live together but just can not have sex. The law also sets out punishment for various acts apart from gay sex including unmarried people engaging in displays of affection, adultery and underage sex. “It is forbidden because in the sharia context, the act is vile,” Syahrizal Abbas, the head of Aceh’s sharia department, which drew up the law, told Reuters. “It brings unhealthy psychological impact to human development, and it will affect the community.” Outside Aceh, Indonesia is generally tolerant of gay people, particularly in urban areas like Jakarta. JAKARTA - An Indonesian family of 10 said Monday they had a miraculous escape when they arrived too late to catch AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which went missing shortly after takeoff en route to Singapore. Christianawati, 36, said the 10 of them, who included her family, her mother and her younger brother’s family, were heading to Singapore to celebrate New Year. The six adults and four children were originally booked on the 7:30 am flight but AirAsia moved them to Flight QZ8501 scheduled for two hours earlier. “They emailed and called us on
December 15 and 16 to inform us but we missed those calls,” Christianawati said. “So we arrived at the airport to check in for the 7:30am flight but were told our flights had been rescheduled to 5:30am and we were late. Of course we were angry,” she said. “While the new tickets were being reissued, we heard that the earlier plane had crashed so we cancelled our flights immediately,” she said. “I was shocked to hear about it and cried. KUALA LUMPUR - Shares in AirAsia, Southeast Asia’s biggest budget airline, lost almost eight percent in Kuala Lumpur on Monday after one of its jets disappeared with 162 people on board. The firm slumped 12 percent to 2.60 ringgit at the open but recovered slightly to sit at 2.71 ringgit, still down 7.82 percent, at 0600 GMT. The Airbus disappeared en route to Singapore from Surabaya in Indonesia’s east Java after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather. Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency said it is likely at the bottom of the sea. A local broker told AFP investors were continuing to sell AirAsia shares. But selling pressure appeared to be abating as they digested the fact that the missing plane belonged to the Malaysian firm’s Indonesian unit. Shukor Yusof, founder of aviation research firm Endau Analytics, said investors and creditors would remain firmly behind AirAsia and its CEO Tony Fernandes, who transformed a floundering carrier into Asia’s most
successful budget airline. “The market reaction is quite natural. I am not surprised,” he said. “I think investor confidence will return quickly since the airline has a solid business model.” Indonesia resumed a sea and aerial search at dawn Monday for the Airbus A320-200 plane that went missing in the Java Sea Sunday morning. Analyst Tan Kee Hoong said that with most of AirAsia’s borrowings denominated in dollars, the weaker ringgit would lead to more expensive repayments. In addition, the airline may not fully benefit from lower oil prices because management had indicated that some of the fuel cost savings will be passed back to consumers via lower fuel surcharges, he said. German central bank chief: cheap oil is stimulus
BERLIN — The president of Germany’s central bank is questioning the need for the European Central Bank to embark on a new bond-buying program when the continent is being “gifted a stimulus program” by low oil prices. Coordinator of King Saguna House of Shell, I Made Kanan Jaya, is now trying creatively to make lampshade craft by using shell waste. The lampshade using marine shell was made after many foreign travelers got interested in purchasing the results of his shell crafts. In addition to lampshade, Kanan Jaya admitted that he had made various forms of crafts such as turtle ornament up to bowl, tray and other ceremonial tools. However, these items had a limited market because they were only used by Balinese people. For that reason, he began pioneering to create various lampshades as having a wider market. “Lampshade craft can be accepted by various people, especially foreign travelers,” he said. A lampshade was sold for IDR 200,000. He claimed that in addition to displaying them in art shops he also received the orders from customers who were
interested. The process of making could take three to five days for making a decorative lighting. “The making is rather long because it uses fiber and should be dried using sunlight. On cloudy day like today, it will take much longer,” he said. Associated with raw materials, he claimed to never find difficulty because the shells used to make the crafts were abundantly available on Serangan Beach. He admitted to using this type of shell living in the mangrove forests that frequently appeared when sea waves reached the Serangan Beach. “On the next temple ceremony at Sakenan Temple, the craft will also be sold as a typical craft of Serangan Island,” he added. Shell craft has become the source of income for the people of Serangan. Meanwhile, as planned the shell craft would also made a museum to introduce the types of shells on the Island of Serangan including the protected shells. Kanan Jaya added that people who came to Serangan Island would not only buy shell crafts but could also directly learn more about the shells and how to make a craft. “We started to try in order to be able to make educational tour where visiting traveler will not only buy the craft products, but can also learn more about the shells,” he concluded. In the meantime, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo stated that the government will take action against IS members who have entered Poso, Central Sulawesi, by deploying TNI personnel in early January 2015. “The instruction of President Jokowi is to make a clean sweep of the area. All forces of the TNI will be deployed. How come (we have done) nothing against them for the last ten years. Starting next month, we will be going to the field to crush (them),” Minister Kumolo emphasized in Papua, on Sunday. The home affairs minister affirmed that his ministry has detected 100 foreign fighters of IS, formerly ISIS, who had entered Poso, Central
Sulawesi. “There are 100 foreigners in Poso, from ISIS (IS) group. If (they) cannot do jihad in Syria, (they launch) jihad in Poso,” the minister noted. Kumolo, a senior politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), said the military will intensify security measures in border areas to prevent IS members from infiltrating into Indonesia. The Indonesian government has zero tolerance for groups such as IS that will harm national harmony and unity, he noted. “They will be crushed by the TNI. Avalanche, dozens of vehicles get stuck
GIANYAR - Disaster alerts were declared for the entire region of Gianyar following disasters hitting the regions. After heavy rains engulfed Gianyar over the past few days, people were evaluated on Sunday (Dec 28), dozens of vehicles were stuck after an avalanche occurred that closed the road between Buahan - Payangan. 12 hours of rain on Saturday made soil conditions unstable.
The evacuation resulting form the avalanche on the Buahan-Payangan road section took up to 6 hours. Officers of the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) deployed early in the morning were only able to reopen the road around 07:00 on Sunday morning. Dozens of vehicles were stuck at Buahan because the road had a quite steep terrain. As a result, many vehicles from Buahan wishing to go to Payangan
were trapped by the avalanche. Aside from the avalanche, the Payangan area also suffered damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. The Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) intake pump was flooded by mud. Managing Director of the PDAM Gianyar, Made Sastra Kencana, admitted that the made in Malaysia intake pump station could deliver around 100 liters per second for the area of Payangan, Ubud,

Obama: Longest war in US history is ending
HONOLULU — President Barack Obama says the longest war in American history is coming to a responsible conclusion. Obama is welcoming the end of U.S. combat operations in Afghanistan. The war came to a formal end Sunday with a ceremony in Kabul. Obama says in a statement that the effort has devastated alQaida’s core leadership, brought justice to Osama bin Laden and disrupted terrorist plots. He says U.S. troops and diplomats have
helped Afghans reclaim their communities and move toward democracy. Obama is also honoring the more than 2,200 Americans who have died in Afghanistan since the

Turkish cargo ship sinks in Adriatic, 2 dead, 4 missing
ROME — A Turkish cargo ship collided with another merchant vessel and sank near a foggy Italian port in the northern Adriatic on Sunday, killing two crew members and leaving four others missing in cold, rough seas, officials said. Coast Guard Cmdr. Franco Maltese said six crew members were initially rescued and brought to the port of Marina di Ravenna;
one of those rescued later died in the hospital. He said searchers spotted what was believed to be a corpse in the choppy waters, and Ravenna’s fire department confirmed that that body was found and brought ashore. The search for the four still missing was suspended due to darkness. The 86-meter-long (290-foot) Turkish ship Gokbel
went down after colliding with the 97-meter (320-foot) Belizeflagged Lady Aziza, which was still seaworthy and was being brought to port as part of the investigation, Maltese said. BEIJING — Connections to Google Inc.’s popular email service have been blocked in China amid efforts by the government to limit access to the company’s services. Records from Google’s Transparency Report show online traffic from China to Gmail dropped to nearly zero on Saturday, although there was a tiny pickup on Monday. Calls to the regulator, the China Internet Information Office, were unanswered Monday. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying did not confirm the block but said China welcomes foreign investors who legally conduct business in China. Google closed its mainland China search engine in 2009, saying it would no longer cooperate with the country’s censors. That followed hacking attacks traced
to China aimed at stealing the company’s operating code and breaking into email accounts. Since then, access to Google services has been periodically limited or blocked, possibly in an effort to encourage Chinese users of Google products to shift to domestic companies willing to cooperate with the government. Web access to Gmail has been blocked since June, according to Greatfire.org, a China-based advocacy group for Internet freedom, but users had been able to access the service through mobile apps or third-party email software such as Microsoft Outlook until the current block. From the sweet smell of Jacqueline Kennedy’s perfume mingled with the scent of John F. Kennedy’s blood to Whitney Houston’s last drug-fuelled moments in a Beverly Hills bathtub, scientists at Breda university say they offer visitors a unique, if somewhat macabre, historical snapshot. “We all have seen the images of JFK’s assassination, but what did it smell like?” asks Frederik Duerinck, from the communication and multimedia design faculty of Breda’s Avans university of applied sciences. To find out, visitors with a sense of the morbid are invited to lie in a series of four silver metal boxes similar to those found in a morgue. SINGARAJA - Following the feast days of Galungan and Kuningan this year, some tourist attractions in Buleleng seemed to be thronged by visitors. NEGARA - A storm occurred in the Straits of Bali over past week, has caused fishermen in Jembrana go home empty-handed. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Flight altitudes AirAsia flight QZ8501, which lost contact with air traffic controllers during a flight from Surabaya to Singapore on Sunday, had been flying lower than several other airliners in the vicinity. The plane disappeared five minutes after its request to increase altitude to avoid clouds had been turned down due to traffic in the area.

An object spotted during a sea search for an AirAsia plane was not from the aircraft, Indonesia’s vice president said Monday, after reports that an Australian surveillance aircraft had found something.
