George Clooney rebukes racism in backdrop of thriller ‘Suburbicon’ LOS ANGELES - As one of Hollywood’s most famous celebrities, George Clooney is not afraid to use his platform to speak up on issues close to him, but do not expect the actor to enter the political arena anytime soon. “I’ve always been around and involved in politics and believe that we all have to participate one way or another. But no, I’m not going to get into it,” Clooney told Reuters. “I don’t have to answer to any one person. I don’t have to make compromises, I can point the finger at whomever I think needs to be pointed out,” he added. In his latest film “Suburbicon,” Clooney directs a darkly humorous 1950s crime tale in which he points the finger squarely at the racial tensions in present-day America with a story about a black family moving into an affluent white suburban neighborhood as the backdrop. “I think we should constantly be talking about whether or not building walls and scapegoating of minorities is how we want to be represented,” Clooney said. “I think the best way to do that is to remind ourselves that this is something that we do, that we’ve been doing probably since the beginning of our country and that we have to constantly litigate it,” he added. “Suburbicon,” out in U.S. theaters on Friday, follows Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) in the aftermath of a terrifying break-in at his suburban home, which results in the suspicious death of his wife. As the investigation into the tragedy deepens, Gardner and his wife’s twin sister Maggie (Julianne Moore) find themselves in a situation quickly escalating beyond their control. “This was probably the darkest role I’ve ever had a chance to play, which is very liberating,” Damon said. ‘Stranger Things 2’ gets darker in aftermath of death and Demogorgon
LOS ANGELES - A year has passed since a supernatural demon terrorized the town of Hawkins, Indiana, but as Netflix’s hit 1980s science fiction series “Stranger Things” returns for a second season on Friday, life has not returned to normal for the unlikely heroes. The adults and teenagers of “Stranger Things 2” wrestle emotionally with the events of the first season: a town boy’s disappearance, a death, a mysterious girl with superpowers and a decaying parallel universe called the Upside Down. “We wanted that trauma to really run through the entire season so it’s about these characters confronting the horrors,” said Matt Duffer, one half of the Duffer Brothers, the twins who created the show. All nine episodes of “Stranger Things 2” will be released on Friday. At the center of the show are its young teenage breakout stars. Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) suffers worsening visions of the Upside

without the help of anyone else.” “Stranger Things” has become a phenomenon for Netflix Inc , landing Emmy wins and drawing a cadre of obsessed fans who launched a viral online campaign, #JusticeForBarb, sparked by the gruesome demise of supporting character Barb Holland. The second season ramps up the quest to bring closure to her death while introducing new characters and expanding the story geographically. Mount Agung volcano alert in Bali downgraded
Denpasar - Residents and tourists on tenterhooks in Bali can exhale after the alert status of Mount Agung volcano was downgraded on Sunday afternoon following a decrease in seismic activity over the past week. Mount Agung - the largest and most sacred mountain in Bali had been on the highest alert level since September 22 with tens of thousands of people evacuated as authorities warned of a possible eruption. The threat has battered the economy of the resort island, which chalked up losses of up to $191.4 million - $24 million from the tourism sector alone - over the 38 days the volcano was on the highest possible alert. But Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation spokesman Kasbani stressed the
decision to downgrade the warning was based purely on the lessening activity of the volcano and not other pressures. The exclusion zone has been reduced to an area of between six and 7.5 kilometres from the summit. Only six villages remain within this danger zone. As of October 29 there were 133,349 evacuees living in 390 refugee camps in nine regencies throughout Bali. Refugees who live outside this new exclusion zone will be assisted to return home should they wish to do so. Besakih temple - the
largest and holiest Hindu temple in Bali and a popular tourist attraction - is also now considered safe.An official statement released by the volcanology centre warned that although the status of Mount Agung has been downgraded from four to three, the volcano had not completely calmed down and still had the potential to erupt. Volcanologist Devy Kamil Syahbana said the decision to downgrade the alert status was made following decreasing seismic activity over the period of a week. “It’s a constant pattern. After one week we think this decrease may be a good sign the volcano has weakened its pressure,” he said. Satellite imagery indicated thermal activity was also decreasing and photographs taken by drones
of the crater on Sunday morning indicated less steam. The volcanology centre will continue to monitor the volcano and advise of any increase in activity. As the rumbling Mount Agung took its toll on Bali’s economy, the National Disaster Management Agency last week suggested a less conventional form of tourism: volcano tourism. Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho posted a spectacular photo of a pre-wedding shoot in front of another Indonesian volcano Mount Sinabung in Sumatra - on his official Twitter account. “We need to explore the potential of volcano tourism,” he told reporters. “Malaysia has no volcanos, Australia has no volcanos, we have plenty
of volcanos. As long as we stay in the safe zone it will be safe. The tourism ministry should actually explore it.” Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a fault line in the Pacific Ocean, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Soft opening of RSBM re-postponed
Thousands of Sanur residents rally to ask for job promise
DENPASAR - Soft opening of Bali Mandara Hospital (RSBM) is postponed again for the second time on Saturday (Oct. 28). Previously, the hospital owned by Bali provincial government failed to be launched on August 14 because the operation chamber was still not ready. This time, the soft opening cannot be done because dozens of thousands of people of Sanur held a demonstration in front of the RSBM. People from 28 hamlets have gathered on Mertasari Beach since 07:00. They were originally awaiting the arrival of the officials from the Bali government to provide written guarantee related to the priority of job vacancy at the RSBM for Sanur community. Since no officials came, the community then moved to RSBM around 09:00. The crowds even filled Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, especially in front of the hospital area. While inside, especially in the RSBM courtyard, hundreds of police officers were on guard. One by one the community leaders of Sanur delivered their speeches. Among them, there were Denpasar legislators, I Wayan Mariyana Wandira and Ida Bagus Ketut Kiana. “We are here to fight for our rights in Sanur. We have facilitated the development without any disturbance, and this is a good faith to realize the hospital,” said Wandira. His colleague, Ida Bagus Ketut Kiana, added that Sanur people came down to the streets because the Bali provincial government does not keep the promise. It is related to the recruitment of workers, so far only three local residents were received among approximately 500 workers recruited by the RSBM. Actually, at the time of dissemination on the RSBM development, Sanur community was promised to get quota as much as 10 percent of all vacancies. “We are only given 3 people, are
they worth or not? Every development in an area is obliged to give prosperity to local society. But what’s about this one? Are our people not worth struggling for that?” he asked. A day before, representatives of the local community had a meeting with the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, in the office of the governor. At the meeting, the governor said he never promised to give a-10 percent vacancy. The governor even apologized and will eventually prioritize the Sanur community to fill 19 formations in 2017 and 40 more formations in 2018. “Yesterday, it was stated that it (provincial government—Ed) will meet us on Mertasari Beach and give us the quota demanded. However, what is the reality? They did not come to see us,” said Chief of the Intaran customary village, Sanur, A.A. Kompiang Raka, who got the next turn to express his oration.

Raka added that dissemination team should report to the RSBM recruitment team after promising to recruit Sanur people to fill 10 percent of the vacancies. However in reality, the governor does not know anything about the promise. “The dissemination team stated that it has been prioritized in the MoU, but the governor claimed not to know about it. If the dissemination team does not report to the governor, it means it is a harassment of the governor’s office,” said this legislator of the Bali House of Representatives. Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation, Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta, said there are 280 residents of Sanur applying for job at the RSBM. They come from various disciplines. However, only three residents are accepted in the recruitment process of the more than 500s vacancies available. “We’re tired of receiving promises. Our society wants certainty,” he said. According to Sidharta, his foundation has met ten times with the Bali government to discuss about this issue. Lastly, a meeting was held with the governor of Bali at the gubernatorial office on Friday (Oct. 27). At the last meeting, the governor said he would prioritize the Sanur community for 19 vacancies in 2017 and 40 vacancies (security guard—Ed) in 2018. However, there has not been a written assurance. Provincial government that promised to come to Mertasari Beach before the demo did not come. That’s why the demo remains to be implemented resulting in the delay of the soft opening for the RSBM last Saturday. “We will continuously demand until the 10 percent can be met. It is their (provincial government—Ed) promise delivered in the dissemination,” he explained. In the meantime, the RSBM management represented by Acting Director, Bagus Darmayasa, was unable to cope with the demands of society. Before the entire community of Sanur, Darmayasa admitted that he only pays devotional work at the RSBM. “The policy lies in the authority of the Bali provincial government,” he argued. (kmb32)
Refugees remember 1963 tragedy, Celebration of Galungan between anxiety and devotion
MOUNT Agung in Karangasem remains in warning alert level. The certainty of a further phenomenon is unpredictable. Dozens of residents living in the surrounding villages are also still evacuating in Klungkung district. It has been lasting for five weeks. Amid such situation, celebration of Galungan has been around the corner. Their desire to go home to celebrate for a moment is enormous. However, the 1963 tragedy is still very haunting. In accordance with history, this largest mountain in Bali erupted on the Penyajaan (two days before Galungan). Refugees are overwhelmed with anxiety. On the other hand, they want to say prayers. Although far from the birthplace, refugees at Swecapura Stadium, Gelgel village, Klungkung, for instance, do not forget to welcome Galungan day, denoting the symbol of dharma’s victory against adharma. Amidst the life that is not as sweet as it used to be, many of them have made canang (oblation)
and other ritual paraphernalia. One of them is Ni Wayan Munti, 45, from Sebudi, Selat subdistrict. Her hands looked nimbly slicing the bright yellow young coconut leaf. Various oblations she made looks very beautiful. She did not care about the atmosphere of the surrounding bustles. However, according to her, the preparations are no longer like six months ago. There is no mapatung (slaughter pig together). The oblations made are also less to be dedicated only in the mother’s temple or clan temple. “In the past, we have made preparations far in advance. Many ritual paraphernalia have to be made. But now, we just make in a small number and they are simpler,” she said on Saturday (Oct. 28). On Galungan falling on November 1, she is going to go home but not with all the family members. It is only for a moment. Anxieties make her quickly return to the refuge for fear of the 1963 tragedy repeats
again. “At that time, the mountain erupted on Penyajaan Galungan. So, if going home, we will be anxious,” she said. Another refugee, I Nengah Purni, from Parang Sari village, Selat, admitted to missing a moment like six months ago. When doing various preparations, there is a strong connection in the family. She could help each other, mingle and share stories. Similar opinion was expressed by Ni Wayan Sulatri, 60, a villager from Griana Kangin hamlet, North Duda, Selat, evacuating at Lebah Hall, Semarapura Kangin. Unfriendly situation of Mount Agung makes her Galungan celebration smaller, namely just do worship like piodalan (temple anniversary). “Considering the current situation, Galungan cannot be celebrated as it used to be. Nevertheless, we are still saying prayers as an obligation. We’ll go home early in the morning and be back in the afternoon,” she said. Ritual paraphernalia such as canang are made
in refugee camps. It is done through mutual assistance with family where the materials are purchased in the nearest market. In the meantime, the Head of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Klungkung, Putu Widiada, urged the refugees not to return home until Mount Agung is declared absolutely conducive. “We urge people not to return home because Mount Agung can erupt at any time,” he said. He stated the appeal has been submitted to refugee coordinator. “We do not want this (returning home—Ed) to happen,” he described. In accordance with the circular of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, especially in refugee camps will be made a worship place of God (Surya shrine) and ancestor (kemulan shrine) as in their respective home. Based on the latest data, the number of refugee in Klungkung district reaches 17,852 people spreading across 42 villages. (sos)

Dozens of local guides get technical coaching to improve competency
After Mexico quakes, Day of the Dead parade honors rescuers
MEXICO CITY - Dancing devils, towering skeletons and altars festooned with marigolds made their way down Mexico City’s main thoroughfare on Saturday to commemorate Day of the Dead in a country still mourning nearly 500 people killed in earthquakes last month. More than 700 performers prepared for months for the colorful afternoon procession along more than 4 miles (7 km) of the expansive Paseo de la Reforma. The two destructive earthquakes in September prompted some late changes to the program. A raised fist constructed out of hard hats and pick-axes led the way in the parade, greeted by cheers and applause from thousands of onlookers. Just behind, a group in fluorescent aidworker vests marched with fists in the air - a
tribute to the rescuers who made the gesture to demand silence as they listened for survivors in the rubble from the second quake, on Sept. 19, which toppled dozens of buildings and killed nearly 230 people in the capital. But the strongest earthquakes in more than three decades did not diminish a centuriesold Mexican celebration. Participants and onlookers alike painted their faces as colorful skulls, many in the style of Mexico’s iconic skeleton figure known as “La Catrina.” “For us as a society it was something very violent that moved our conscience,” said Ramon Marquez, 51, wearing an orange t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase #fuerzamorelos (Be strong Morelos) referring to one of the areas affected in the quake. “The parade could be a distraction, a way of escaping.” Sponsored by Mexico’s tourism and
culture ministries, the parade was triple the size of last year’s maiden effort, inspired by a Day of the Dead parade featured in the opening sequence of the 2015 James Bond film “Spectre.” Three young women wore La Catrinastyle face paint, large feathered hats and 1900s-style dresses that they said had been used in “Spectre.” This year’s festivities took on a new feeling of solidarity after Mexico´s deadly earthquake, they said. “We’re not only here to celebrate and dance, but also when there’s a disastrous situation we come together to help,” Violeta Canella Juarez, 31, said. Some 200,000 people attended last year, and local media reported at least 300,000 people at Saturday’s parade. The parade concluded with mariachi mu-
sicians belting out Mexican folk songs from a float covered with flowers and colored paper like the boats that cruise the canals in the south of the city. Women dressed in wedding gowns danced with their grooms, both with faces painted as skulls. Although Mexicans typically celebrate Day of the Dead on Nov. 2 in town plazas, homes and cemeteries, the Bond film’s popularity prompted Mexico City officials to put on a carnivalesque spectacle. Even so, the event’s organizers say the parade is not about emulating a Hollywood production. “The point of this parade is to celebrate life,” said Anima founder and Artistic Director Alejandra Gonzalez Anaya. “It’s to put on the radar of Mexicans an important tradition ... so we feel proud of showing something so important from Mexico to the world.” (rtr)
BANGLI - Dozens of local guides in the district Bangli were given training related to ethics as well as the history of Mount Batur on Thursday (Oct. 25). The coaching session for tour guides that took place in a restaurant in Kintamani by the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency in order for these guides to be better and more reliable. Guides who accompany tourists on tours up mount Batur were given additional training about the geology of the region. Division Head of Promotion at Tourism and Culture Office, Wayan Merta, said that the competency training for Bangli tour guides was attended by dozens of guides and was organized in collaboration with the Indonesian Tour Guides Association (HPI) and geologists. Merta explained that the guides were encouraged to practice good ethics and charm and were also asked not to scramble
for guests or argue with fellow tour guides in front of guests. “If there are tourists who wish to go trekking in Abang Erawang for example, they should be handed over to guides from Abang who can provide a better service as they are familiar with the area” he explained. The guides were also given information about the history and other matters related to the mountain as it is one of Bangli’s main attractions. This was, said Merta, the guides can provide correct explanations to the tourists, especially those who climb the mountain. Currently the are approximately 715 local tour guides in Bangli, how ever Bangli’ C ultu re an d To u ris m o ffice could only provide training for of them due to budgetary constraints. “We plan to continue holding capacity building sessions for tour guides” added Merta. According to information compiled on Wednesday (Oct. 25), there are 189 students from grade 7 to grade 9 attending classes here. They all come from the disaster-prone areas of Mount Agung. The teachers were previously teaching at SMPN 1 Selat. Nyoman Budiana is one such teacher and explained that the new school has been running since Monday (Oct. 23). “According to the instructions from the education agency, starting on Monday we can give lessons to the children who have been evacuated to Klungkung”, said Budiana. The students, explained Budiana study from 12:30 to 18:00, which is fine because education is important. “ I am also an evacuee. I teach because I feel sorry for the children who have had their education disrupted, especially the ninth graders who are about to pass their big exams” said this ninth grade teacher from Muncan village who was evacuated to Klungkung. Another teacher named Ketut Sudiarta, said that
amid the confusing situation he not only teaches at SMPN 3 Semarapura but also at SD 6 Muncan elementary school located outside the disaster-prone area for students temporarily joining the class. “I teach at two locations, every odd day. We have a schedule” he explained. Although the evacuee students have to study at new schools with the status of evacuees, their enthusiasm for attending class remains high. Teachers do however take into consideration the conditions that the evacuees have to deal with when assigning homework. ‘ We are flexible. For homework, we adjust things to conditions” added Sudiarta. One student named Kadek Arini, said that before the system changed, she went to school in the morning and jpined the same classes as the other students at SMPN 3 Semarapura. “We join the class very happily. Friends here are also good”, she said. Similar education is also running at SMPN 1 Semarapura and SMPN 2 Semarapura. Based in the latest available data, the evacuee students range in age from kindergarten (323 students), elementary school (1,644 students), junior high (599 students) and high school and vocational school (492 students). Head of the Klungkung Education Agency, Dewa Gede Darmawan, stated that the change in the teaching and learning system is to facilitate the disbursement of BOS funds from Karangasem that is very important for supporting the operations including things like printing the semester final exam sheets. “The school is named ‘brotherhood school’ because the teaching-learning process utilizes existing schools”, he explained. BANGLI — Galungan holiday is only a few days away. A number of Mount Agung refugees in Bangli intend to celebrate Galungan in their respective village even though Mount Agung remains in warning alert level. As planned, they will return to their respective village in the morning to pray and return to the evacuation post in the afternoon or evening.
A refugee of the Kubu refugee camp, Komang Sukreni, when met recently expressed that she hoped the condition of Mount Agung can return to normal. Thus, she and other refugees can immediately return to their respective home to do activities and celebrate Galungan on Wednesday (Nov. 1). Although planning to go home, when met at refugee camp this young mother from Besakih village, Rendang, claimed to have not started making ritual paraphernalia at all. As planned, the ritual paraphernalia will be made at the evacuation post several days ahead of Galungan. “If not evacuating, this time we have usually started making preparation,” she said. In addition to Sukreni, another refugee, Nengah Kersa, also revealed that he is going to return home to Besakih to pray on Galungan holiday. NEGARA - The ranks of Gilimanuk Harbor Police secured nine baby reptiles resembling gecko from Java on Saturday morning (Oct. 28). The nine reptiles were carried by box truck of Bali Prima expedition package with license plate of L 9905 UC driven by Sumardi, 50, from Sidoarjo, East Java. Chief of Gilimanuk Harbor Police, Nyoman Subawa, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation, Komang Muliyadi, said the reptiles were successfully secured because his ranks regularly supervise goods, people and vehicles coming in and out of Bali. Once leaving the ship, as usual all the types of box truck and buses are directed to parking lot to
undergo an examination. After inspection of the cargo, a suspicious package was found wrapped in a small carton and inside contained a pile of snacks. Having been examined more carefully, the officers found plastic box at the bottom containing nine reptiles without being equipped with a letter from the quarantine office of the area of origin. His office provides an understanding for the driver related to the provisions of Law No. 16/1992 on the quarantine of animals, fish and plants where every shipment of animals, fish and plants, animal products, animal-based products, fish and plants from one island to another shall be supplemented
with a health certificate from the Quarantine Office of the area of origin. From the driver’s information, he confessed to only transport it. As soon as the goods were loaded and the letter of goods received from the office he immediately departed with the destination to Denpasar. All the stuffs have been checked in the office and he did not know the contents of the package. Muliyadi said that since being unable to show the document, the driver and his evidence were secured temporarily at Gilimanuk Harbor Police for further process. MADRID - Sacked Catalonian president Carles Puigdemont on Saturday called for peaceful “democratic opposition” to the central government’s takeover of the region following its unilateral declaration of independence from Spain. Puigdemont, whose regional government was dismissed by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday, accused Madrid of “premeditated aggression” against the will of the Catalans. Rajoy removed Puigdemont, took over the administration of the autonomous region and called a new election after Catalonia’s parliament declared itself an independent nation on Friday. New Saudi mega-city is prince’s desert dream
RIYADH - Saudi Arabia’s planned $500 billion mega-city is an oasis of stunning cliffs, sandy beaches and high-tech projects powered by wind and solar energy where robots outnumber humans and a cosmopolitan lifestyle offers sports, concerts and fine dining. That vision showcased in a promotional video at an international investment conference in Riyadh this week bears little resemblance to the kingdom’s present where an oil “addiction” has created dependency on state handouts and a puritanical clergy imposes ultra-conservative mores. It is the latest dream of 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who rose from relative obscurity two years ago to the top echelons of power, becoming heir-apparent in June. Ambitious and energetic, the modernizing prince is driven by regret that his kingdom, the largest Arab economy and the world’s top oil exporter, has fallen behind smaller neighbours. Early on, he laid out a plan to shake Saudi Arabia out of its slumber after decades of gerontocratic rule. But his aspirations are a tall order in a country where the royal family rules in a pact with austere and powerful Wahhabi clerics wary of modernisation. His latest plan to build the 26,500 square km (10,000 square mile) business zone called NEOM -- getting on for the size of Belgium -- captures both the scale of his ambitions and the worries surrounding them. Some executives at the conference - dubbed “Davos in the desert” remained sceptical about Riyadh’s ability to execute its grand design given its primitive legal system and sluggish bureaucracy. The young prince acknowledges the difficulties but has pledged to push ahead. “This is a challenge. The dream is easy but making it come true is very difficult,” he said. DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD He described the Saudi youth he is counting on to achieve his vision as “a doubleedged sword”. “If they work and go the right way, with all their force they will create another country, something completely different ... and if they go the wrong direction it will be the destruction of this country,” he said. Under his Vision 2030, Prince Mohammed plans to float a stake in oil giant Saudi Aramco and privatise other state assets to create the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund to invest in infrastructure and industrial projects. The clergy has become more careful about publicly criticising the ruling family. Some 30 clerics, intellectuals and activists were locked up last month in what rights groups described as a “crackdown on dissent”. The official council of senior religious scholars praised the crown prince’s NEOM plan and his comments on moderate Islam in a tweet this week. FUNDING CHALLENGES Whether MbS, as the prince is known, will achieve his modernising vision, which relies on the private sector driving growth and providing the state with new revenue, was the subject of animated debate in conference halls. “The project is certainly a novel idea and one with a lot of potential but a lot of details still require clarification,” said Raza Agha, a chief economist at VTB Capital. “Beyond the challenges of funding and building a project of this scale, the seemingly ad hoc nature of this, and other, announcements only serves to add to Saudi policy unpredictability,” he said.
Steffen Hertog, a leading scholar on Saudi Arabia, told Reuters the project is meant to draw on matching private investments “so if these for some reason are not forthcoming, the fiscal risks to the public purse should be limited.” “The main project risk probably is the potential lack of large private investors. The local and international private sector will want to hear a lot more detail than what has been published to date,” he said. YOUNGER GENERATION The rise of King Salman’s young son underscores a dramatic shift towards a leadership seemingly more in tune with the needs of a country where 70 percent of the population are under 30. It is the first time that effective power has passed from octogenarian rulers to the third generation of a family founded by the prince’s grandfather, Ibn Saud. King Salman still has the final word, but has delegated unprecedented powers to his son. In less than two years, Prince Mohammed -- who also runs the kingdom’s defence and oil strategies -- has introduced genuine social changes that were regarded as taboo only a year ago. He curtailed the powers of the religious police who once roamed the streets to impose gender segregation and ensure women were covered from head-to-toe in public. He has also lifted a ban on women driving, permitted music concerts and is expected to reopen cinemas shuttered for 40 years.
Under Salman’s predecessor King Abdullah there was also a slow though uneven process of liberalisation. But the mood in the capital Riyadh has shifted noticeably since MbS’s rise, with young people mixing on streets and in restaurants where music is played and women dare to uncover their hair and don colourful robes. That would once have been shut down by the morality police, which seems to have backed off. CONSOLIDATING POWER Social changes sparked some resistance from clerics and activists who objected to the prince’s consolidation of power at the expense of other princes, including Prince Mohammed bin Nayef whom he replaced in a palace coup. A wave of arrests last month exposed MbS’ unwillingness to tolerate obstacles to his vision. He must still redress a religiously-based education system and uproot a radical ideology which demonises other religions and sects. On his side in this culture war are many of a young generation keen to catch up with a liberal world they follow on social media, satellite TV and trips abroad. “There is a desire within significant parts of Saudi society to move away from rigid, old-school Wahhabi control of social behaviour and the public sphere,” said Hertog. “There is resistance from conservative forces, but to date it has been diffuse and disorganized,” he added.(kmb33/rtr)

Inside the temple, there is a spring used as a place to invoke holy water as a means of ceremony for Balinese Hindus. Besides, there is a pool that can be used for selfcleaning. It is divided into two, namely a special bathing pool for men and women. Before entering the bathing pool, visitors are advised to use cloth and then step down some stairs to get to the pool. Local people are accustomed to using the pool for bathing, self-cleaning. Moreover, on certain holidays, many Balinese Hindus come to the temple to do self-purificatory rite to get rid of spiritual impurities. Local people visit the temple almost every afternoon to bathe with friends or family. “We bathe here almost every day. The atmosphere is cool and the water is fresh, so that the body and mind feel fresh as well. We love the atmosphere in this peaceful and quiet temple. When bathing, we usually offer some offerings to invoke salvation,” said a local resident. Mengening Temple implements the tri mandala or three horizontal spatial dimension concept, namely the nista mandala (outermost), madya mandala (middle) and uttama mandala (innermost courtyard). In the outermost courtyard of the Mengening Temple sits a garden with pancaka tirtha. This garden is
used as a place of self-purification by local deities. In some places, there is also a source of holy water commonly taken by the community for ritual purposes. According to the temple attendant, the spring of holy water includes the Tirtha Keben, Tirtha Sudamala, Tirtha Melela, Tirtha Soka, Tirtha Megelung, Tirtha Tunggang and Tirtha Telaga Waja. Meanwhile, in the area of Pancaka tirtha garden sits the Tirtha Parisuda, Tirtha Pengelukatan, Tirtha Pengulapan, Tirtha Keris and Tirtha Kamaning. Visitors are not allowed to bathe in the springs to prevent the water from receding and disappearing. In the middle courtyard there are some buildings such as gamelan pavilion, wooden split drum (kulkul) tower, Bale Pegambahan and Bale Pegat. Then, the innermost courtyard consists of some shrines including three-tiered meru shrine as the abode of Ida Bathara Prasada Agung, the chamber is the abode of deities of Gunung Kawi, Limas shrine for deity of Tirta Empul, Pemaruman, Bale Saka Ulu as the abode of Lord Shiva, Paselang pavilion, Bale Pecanangan and Bale Penganteb. In the chronicle of Mengening Temple of Tampaksiring is not clearly stated when the temple was established. According to local people, Mengening Temple was
predicted to be established during the reign of King Masula-Masuli at Pejeng. He has his own story so that he got to Pejeng. MasulaMasuli was previously named I Sula and I Suli. They are male and female couple born from troktokan of ivory coconut at Besakih region. I Sula and I Suli were then invited by I Sangkul Putih. I Sula and I Suli made all the gods come down to watch both children. Moreover, Goddess Bhyahpara and Goddess Danu finally asked Lord Jagatnatha so that Dukuh Sangkul Putih wanted to bring I Sula and I Suli to Pejeng. When arrived at Pejeng, Sinuhun named them Masula-Masuli. This name is given in connection with the twin birth. During the reign of King Masula-Masuli, the Mengening Temple was only made some improvements. He appointed an architect who really knew about the concept of temples and buildings with the Hindu concept as advised by Bhagawan Wiswa Karma. King Masula-Masuli appointed Empu Kuturan to make improvement to several buildings at Mengening Temple. In addition, in the reign of King Masula-Masuli it is reaffirmed the name of deity abiding in the shrine of Prasada Agung namely Ida Batara Hyang Maha Suci Nirmala. (kmb)
Wayang Wong sacred dance that only exists at Tejakula village, Tejakula subdistrict, was presented at Maksan Temple of local village on Thursday (Apr. 6). The location is chosen because the masks of wayang wong characters are kept at local temple. They are even believed to have been four centuries old. The players performing the Ramayana storyline start staging the first episode of the Bala Kanda in the Ramayana epic. In this staging, the storyline presented by the players is entitled “Sander Sita.” It tells about the duke Marica disguising as a golden deer to attract the attention of Sita. When seeing the deer, Sita then asked Rama to chase it. Rama went away from Sita and tried to shoot the disguising deer. Marica cleverly cried out for help, and his voice was similar to Rama’s. Again, Sita asked Laksmana to look for Rama as being told to be facing difficulties. When Laksmana followed Rama, Sita was abducted by Ravana. By and large, when featuring the storyline of kanda (book—Ed) starting from the first through the seventh, it will take approximately 4.5 years to 5 years. Chairman of the Tejakukus Foundation, Gede Komang, amid the staging told that as sacred dance it is mandatory to be performed as devotional services or ngayah at the Maksan Temple of Tejakula. As usual, the performance is done twice every year precisely on Wraspati Dungulan or the day after Galungan. Since it is sacred, the wayang wong must still perform the episodes of Ramayana epic sequentially. “It has become the tasks of the players of wayang wong to perform devotional services at the temple because the masks are stored at this Maksan temple,” said Komang Gede when met Friday afternoon. According to him, although it is classified into sacred dance, currently this wayang wong is also staged as entertainment art. For several times, the figures of wayang wong characters are presented in the art collaborations. However, the masks staged in the entertainment are not the sacred ones as those stored at Maksan Temple, but the imitations that are kept by the foundation. Based on the existing references, wayang wong is known as sacred art. This art first appeared at Tejakula village about four centuries ago. From the location of its emergence at Tejakula, this art then spread to several regions in Bali. Although having been widespread, its taksu (divine vibration) never disappears and is kept sacred until now. Wayang wong even becomes one of the nine dances included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Besides, the wayang wong dance is also recognized as one of the intangible cultural heritage objects in 2015. (kmb)

Islamists attack Somali hotel, killing at least 29, police say
MOGADISHU - An Islamist attack on a hotel in Mogadishu ended on Sunday after 29 people were killed during a siege lasting nearly 12 hours, police said. The attack proved once again that insurgents can carry out deadly assaults in the heart of the Somali capital. Twin bombings in Mogadishu two weeks ago killed more than 350 people, the worst such attacks in the country’s history. The Islamist militants al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on Saturday. The group wants to overthrow the weak, U.N.-backed government and impose a strict form of Islamic law. “So far I am sure 29 people died - the death toll may rise,” Abdullahi Nur, a police officer, told Reuters. At least 12 of the dead were police officers, Nur said. And a woman, Madobe Nunow, was beheaded while her “three children were shot dead,” he said. A Reuters witness saw seven bodies lying inside the hotel. Three militants were captured alive and two others blew themselves up after they were shot, police said. Some militants may have disguised themselves and escaped with the residents who were rescued from the
hotel, one police officer said. The attack began around at 5 p.m. on Saturday when a car bomb rammed the gates of Nasahablod Two hotel, which is close to the presidential palace, and destroyed the hotel’s defences. Then gunmen stormed the building. The explosion destroyed the front of the threestorey hotel and damaged the hotel next door. Many Somali officials live in fortified hotels for the security they offer. Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Amin ambulances, complained the emergency service had been denied access to the blast sight. “After the hotel operation was over, we wanted to transport the casualties ... all entrances of the scene were blocked by security forces. Al Shabaab said 40 people had been killed, including three of its fighters who stormed the hotel. The government and al Shabaab typically give different figures for victims in such attacks. The twin bombings in Mogadishu on Oct. 14 killed at least 358 people, the worst such attacks in the country’s history, igniting nationwide outrage. Al Shabaab has not claimed responsibility for that attack, but the method - a large truck bomb - is one it has often used. (rtr)

Taiwan president arrives in Hawaii despite Chinese objections
HONOLULU - Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen landed in Honolulu on Saturday en route to the island’s diplomatic allies among Pacific nations and is expected to visit a Pearl Harbor memorial, despite strong objections to the visit from China. China regularly calls Taiwan the most sensitive and important issue between it and the United States, and Beijing complains to Washington about transit stops by Taiwanese presidents. China considers Taiwan to be a wayward province. Tsai left on Saturday on a weeklong trip to three Pacific island allies - Tuvalu, the Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands - via Honolulu and the U.S. territory of Guam. Earlier this week, the U.S. State Department said Tsai’s transits through U.S. soil would be “private and unofficial” and were based on long-standing U.S. practise consistent with “our unofficial relations with Taiwan.” It noted there was “no change to the U.S. one-China policy.”
While in Hawaii, Tsai is expected to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, which is built over the remains of the battleship sunk in Pearl Harbor in the Second World War. The memorial now forms a centerpiece of the World War Two Valor in the Pacific National Monument, a historic site administered by the National Park Service. BOSTON - A federal judge on Wednesday declined to dismiss a lawsuit by an Indonesian illegal immigrant challenging his detention in a Massachusetts county jail, finding that she had authority to challenge the conditions of his confinement. Terry Rombot was part of a wave of Indonesian Christians who fled their country following deadly riots in 1998. About 70 members of that exodus have been allowed to remain, illegally, in New Hampshire since 2010 under a deal with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities. However, in August, President Donald Trump instructed ICE in a directive that all immigrants in the United States illegally were subject to deportation. Rombot learned of the policy change when he arrived for an Aug. 1 check-in at ICE’s Manchester, New Hampshire, office and was arrested. He was initially held in Massachusetts at the Plymouth County house of corrections, which had filed a bid to dismiss the lawsuit, and since has been moved to Bristol County. Federal courts do not have direct authority over immigration matters, which are handled by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, but Chief Judge Patti Saris of the U.S. District Court in Boston wrote in a court filing on Wednesday that she has a say over the terms of his confinement. “The district court holds jurisdiction to review habeas (corpus) challenges to unlawful immigration detention,” Saris wrote. Writs of habeas corpus challenge illegal detention. At a Friday hearing, Saris expressed concern that ICE had broken its word with Rombot after telling him in 2015 that he would “be given an opportunity to prepare for an orderly departure” before being deported. She also expressed concern he was being held alongside potentially violent criminals. Rombot is one of 47 Indonesian nationals living illegally in New Hampshire involved in a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s move to deport them. ICE officials said the arrangement had always been a temporary one and that the agency always had discretion to deport the people covered by the arrangement. Members of the group and advocates say they fear they could face discrimination or violence if forced to return to the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. The Indonesians are part of an ethnic community of about 2,000 people clustered around the city of Dover in New Hampshire’s seacoast region. Their cause has drawn the support of the state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation, including U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Governor Chris Sununu. (rtr)
Indonesia detains owner after deadly fireworks factory blaze
JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have detained a fireworks factory owner and a manager on suspicion of negligence after explosions and fire ripped through a warehouse on the outskirts of Jakarta, killing 48 workers and injuring dozens, police said on Saturday. The blaze in the manufacturing hub of Tangerang was one of the worst industrial disasters to hit Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, where safety standards are often weakly enforced. Police said the fire started when sparks from a welding operation lit a stack of raw materials used for making fireworks, causing at least two explosions that could be heard miles away. “The men are suspected of negligence that led to deaths,” said Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono. The owner of the PT Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses factory and an operations manager were detained while police looked for the welder. The owner was also sus-
pected of employing underage workers, police said. Neither of the two detained was available for comment. Tangerang regent Ahmed Zaki said on Friday that the company, which had been operating for two months, had a permit for packaging but not producing fireworks. Preliminary investigations and witness accounts showed that more than 30 victims were found at the back of the factory, where they had run to try to escape while others had to break holes in the walls to get out. Police denied reports that the front gate and only exit of the factory was locked at the time of the fire. All bodies, many of them charred beyond recognition, had been taken away from the gutted factory, and family members were providing DNA samples to try to identify them. Dozens of workers have been admitted to hospital with burns of up to 80 percent of their bodies. Hospital officials said some remained in critical condition and expected the death toll to rise. (rtr)

On the occasion, the youngsters showcased their creative products, such as bags, garments, and food and beverages and introduced their communities. President Jokowi, on the other hand, highlighted the importance of field trips for school students. Students should not only learn in classrooms and routine academic programs but must also be imparted on-field education to
learn the values of life, he said. “Why, for instance, elementary school students are not taken to banks to see how a financial system works or to a garment factory to witness what a real factory is,” he noted during a discussion with the youth. He said school students could also be taken to a museum or historical places to learn about the founding of the state. By taking them on field trips, cognitive education could be imparted, he stated.
“This way, children are confronted with real challenges and shown real problems that exist in line with their levels,” he added. President Jokowi also emphasized the importance of improving and promoting the application of the education system through digitalization. “I think if we can do it, and if it can also reach the remote regions or outermost islands, change will happen fast,” he remarked. Hidden Waterfall near Lovina Beach SINGARAJA - Singsing Waterfall is one of North Bali’s hidden treasures, which is a great option for nature lovers and those with a penchant for adventure while staying around Lovina Beach or the capital of Singaraja. Its upper creek however, still offers a unique setting with its pools with dark and smooth textured cliff faces on both sides. Birdsong and nature sounds against the drops and trickles of the pools add to the soothing ambiance of this hidden sanctuary. Back at the starting point are local ‘warung’ food stalls selling cold drinks and snacks. BEST TIME During dry season in Bali, generally this refers to the period of May to September, the volume of the waterfalls may decrease a little bit, but this means that it would be easier for you to walk around. Taking a refreshing hike to Singsing Waterfall and its surrounding areas is really a fascinating experience. The atmosphere in Singsing Waterfalls offers beautiful natural scenery and shade. Singsing waterfalls bring exotic and romantic ambience.
Many visitors both domestic and foreign tourists visit Singsing waterfalls. It is because the circumstance is beautiful, calm, and peaceful so it is appropriate for physical fitness. REGINA - Kaetlyn Osmond landed several difficult jumps to overcome two stumbles during her long routine and win gold at the Skate Canada International in Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday. Less than four months before the Winter Olympics, the Canadian world silver medallist entered the final day of the competition with a comfortable lead after dazzling the home crowd with a near perfect short routine on Friday. On Saturday she landed a double axel-triple toe, a triple Lutz and two more triples, making up for a stumble at the outset of the routine and a fall toward the end. The 21-year-old scored 136.85 points for the long routine and won
the competition with 212.91 points overall. “Very proud with my (Skate Canada 2017) experience,” she wrote on Twitter. “It wasn’t perfect. Hidden Waterfall near Lovina Beach SINGARAJA - Singsing Waterfall is one of North Bali’s hidden treasures, which is a great option for nature lovers and those with a penchant for adventure while staying around Lovina Beach or the capital of Singaraja. Birdsong and nature sounds against the drops and trickles of the pools add to the soothing ambiance of this hidden sanctuary. Back at the starting point are local ‘warung’ food stalls selling cold drinks and snacks. BEST TIME During dry season in Bali, generally this refers to the period of May to September, the volume of the waterfalls may decrease a little bit, but this means that it would be easier for you to walk around. Taking a refreshing hike to Singsing Waterfall and its surrounding areas is really a fascinating experience. The atmosphere in Singsing Waterfalls offers beautiful natural scenery and shade. Singsing waterfalls bring exotic and romantic ambience.

REGINA - Kaetlyn Osmond landed several difficult jumps to overcome two stumbles during her long routine and win gold at the Skate Canada International in Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday. Less than four months before the Winter Olympics, the Canadian world silver medallist entered the final day of the competition with a comfortable lead after dazzling the home crowd with a near perfect short routine on Friday. On Saturday she landed a double axel-triple toe, a triple Lutz and two more triples, making up for a stumble at the outset of the routine and a fall toward the end. The 21-year-old scored 136.85 points for the long routine and won
the competition with 212.91 points overall. “Very proud with my (Skate Canada 2017) experience,” she wrote on Twitter. “It wasn’t perfect. But it’s a long season, so there is a lot left to come.” Russia’s Maria Sotskova claimed silver with 192.52 overall points and American Ashley Wagner took the bronze with 183.94. On the men’s side, Japan’s world silver medallist Shoma Uno topped of the podium after nailing his difficult long routine. He ended the competition with 301.10 points, nearly 40 points ahead of silver medalist American Jason Brown. It marks the fourth time that Uno

Islamists attack Somali hotel, killing at least 29, police say
MOGADISHU - An Islamist attack on a hotel in Mogadishu ended on Sunday after 29 people were killed during a siege lasting nearly 12 hours, police said. The attack proved once again that insurgents can carry out deadly assaults in the heart of the Somali capital. Twin bombings in Mogadishu two weeks ago killed more than 350 people, the worst such attacks in the country’s history. The Islamist militants al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on Saturday. The group wants to overthrow the weak, U.N.-backed government and impose a strict form of Islamic law. “So far I am sure 29 people died - the death toll may rise,” Abdullahi Nur, a police officer, told Reuters. At least 12 of the dead were police officers, Nur said. And a woman, Madobe Nunow, was beheaded while her “three children were shot dead,” he said. A Reuters witness saw seven bodies lying inside the hotel. Three militants were captured alive and two others blew themselves up after they were shot, police said. Some militants may have disguised themselves and escaped with the residents who were rescued from the
hotel, one police officer said. The attack began around at 5 p.m. on Saturday when a car bomb rammed the gates of Nasahablod Two hotel, which is close to the presidential palace, and destroyed the hotel’s defences. Then gunmen stormed the building. The explosion destroyed the front of the threestorey hotel and damaged the hotel next door. Many Somali officials live in fortified hotels for the security they offer. Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Amin ambulances, complained the emergency service had been denied access to the blast sight. “After the hotel operation was over, we wanted to transport the casualties ... all entrances of the scene were blocked by security forces. Al Shabaab said 40 people had been killed, including three of its fighters who stormed the hotel. The government and al Shabaab typically give different figures for victims in such attacks. The twin bombings in Mogadishu on Oct. 14 killed at least 358 people, the worst such attacks in the country’s history, igniting nationwide outrage. Al Shabaab has not claimed responsibility for that attack, but the method - a large truck bomb - is one it has often used. (rtr)

Taiwan president arrives in Hawaii despite Chinese objections
HONOLULU - Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen landed in Honolulu on Saturday en route to the island’s diplomatic allies among Pacific nations and is expected to visit a Pearl Harbor memorial, despite strong objections to the visit from China. China regularly calls Taiwan the most sensitive and important issue between it and the United States, and Beijing complains to Washington about transit stops by Taiwanese presidents. China considers Taiwan to be a wayward province. Tsai left on Saturday on a weeklong trip to three Pacific island allies - Tuvalu, the Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands - via Honolulu and the U.S. territory of Guam. Earlier this week, the U.S. State Department said Tsai’s transits through U.S. soil would be “private and unofficial” and were based on long-standing U.S. practise consistent with “our unofficial relations with Taiwan.” It noted there was “no change to the U.S. one-China policy.”
While in Hawaii, Tsai is expected to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, which is built over the remains of the battleship sunk in Pearl Harbor in the Second World War. The memorial now forms a centerpiece of the World War Two Valor in the Pacific National Monument, a historic site administered by the National Park Service. China suspects Tsai wants to push for the formal independence of Taiwan, a red line for Beijing. Tsai says she wants to maintain peace with China but will defend Taiwan’s democracy and security. U.S. President Donald Trump is due to visit China in less than two weeks. He angered Beijing last December by taking a telephone call from Tsai shortly after he won the presidential election. The trip to the United States is Tsai’s second this year. In January she stopped over in Houston and San Francisco on her way to and from Latin America, visiting the headquarters of Twitter , which is blocked in China. (rtr)
BOSTON - A federal judge on Wednesday declined to dismiss a lawsuit by an Indonesian illegal immigrant challenging his detention in a Massachusetts county jail, finding that she had authority to challenge the conditions of his confinement. Terry Rombot was part of a wave of Indonesian Christians who fled their country following deadly riots in 1998. About 70 members of that exodus have been allowed to remain, illegally, in New Hampshire since 2010 under a deal with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities. However, in August, President Donald Trump instructed ICE in a directive that all immigrants in the United States illegally were subject to deportation. Rombot learned of the policy change when he arrived for an Aug. 1 check-in at ICE’s Manchester, New Hampshire, office and was arrested. He was initially held in Massachusetts at the Plymouth County house of corrections, which had filed a bid to dismiss the lawsuit, and since has been moved to Bristol County. Federal courts do not have direct authority over immigration matters, which are handled by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, but Chief Judge Patti Saris of the U.S. District Court in Boston wrote in a court filing on Wednesday that she has a say over the terms of his confinement. “The district court holds jurisdiction to review habeas (corpus) challenges to unlawful immigration detention,” Saris wrote. Writs of habeas corpus challenge illegal detention. At a Friday hearing, Saris expressed concern that ICE had broken its word with Rombot after telling him in 2015 that he would “be given an opportunity to prepare for an orderly departure” before being deported. She also expressed concern he was being held alongside potentially violent criminals. Rombot is one of 47 Indonesian nationals living illegally in New Hampshire involved in a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s move to deport them. ICE officials said the arrangement had always been a temporary one and that the agency always had discretion to deport the people covered by the arrangement. Members of the group and advocates say they fear they could face discrimination or violence if forced to return to the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. The Indonesians are part of an ethnic community of about 2,000 people clustered around the city of Dover in New Hampshire’s seacoast region. Their cause has drawn the support of the state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation, including U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Governor Chris Sununu. (rtr)
Indonesia detains owner after deadly fireworks factory blaze
JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have detained a fireworks factory owner and a manager on suspicion of negligence after explosions and fire ripped through a warehouse on the outskirts of Jakarta, killing 48 workers and injuring dozens, police said on Saturday. The blaze in the manufacturing hub of Tangerang was one of the worst industrial disasters to hit Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, where safety standards are often weakly enforced. Police said the fire started when sparks from a welding operation lit a stack of raw materials used for making fireworks, causing at least two explosions that could be heard miles away. “The men are suspected of negligence that led to deaths,” said Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono. The owner of the PT Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses factory and an operations manager were detained while police looked for the welder. The owner was also sus-
pected of employing underage workers, police said. Neither of the two detained was available for comment. Tangerang regent Ahmed Zaki said on Friday that the company, which had been operating for two months, had a permit for packaging but not producing fireworks. Preliminary investigations and witness accounts showed that more than 30 victims were found at the back of the factory, where they had run to try to escape while others had to break holes in the walls to get out. Police denied reports that the front gate and only exit of the factory was locked at the time of the fire. All bodies, many of them charred beyond recognition, had been taken away from the gutted factory, and family members were providing DNA samples to try to identify them. Dozens of workers have been admitted to hospital with burns of up to 80 percent of their bodies. Hospital officials said some remained in critical condition and expected the death toll to rise. (rtr)

President highlights importance of field trips for students BOGOR - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) commemorated Youth Pledge Day by inviting youngsters, with achievements to their credit, or those running small businesses to the state palace in Bogor, West Java, on Saturday. The Youth Pledge was a declaration made on October 28, 1928, by young Indonesian nationalists during the Second Youth Congress in Jakarta where they proclaimed three ideals: one motherland, one nation, and one language. This was one of the milestones achieved

in the countrys struggle for independence commemorated annually across the country. On the occasion, the youngsters showcased their creative products, such as bags, garments, and food and beverages and introduced their communities. President Jokowi, on the other hand, highlighted the importance of field trips for school students. Students should not only learn in classrooms and routine academic programs but must also be imparted on-field education to
learn the values of life, he said. “Why, for instance, elementary school students are not taken to banks to see how a financial system works or to a garment factory to witness what a real factory is,” he noted during a discussion with the youth. He said school students could also be taken to a museum or historical places to learn about the founding of the state. By taking them on field trips, cognitive education could be imparted, he stated.
“This way, children are confronted with real challenges and shown real problems that exist in line with their levels,” he added. President Jokowi also emphasized the importance of improving and promoting the application of the education system through digitalization. “I think if we can do it, and if it can also reach the remote regions or outermost islands, change will happen fast,” he remarked. RIYADH - Saudi Arabia’s planned $500 billion mega-city is an oasis of stunning cliffs, sandy beaches and high-tech projects powered by wind and solar energy where robots outnumber humans and a cosmopolitan lifestyle offers sports, concerts and fine dining. That vision showcased in a promotional video at an international investment conference in Riyadh this week bears little resemblance to the kingdom’s present where an oil “addiction” has created dependency on state handouts and a puritanical clergy imposes ultra-conservative mores. It is the latest dream of 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who rose from relative obscurity two years ago to the top echelons of power, becoming heir-apparent in June. Ambitious and energetic, the modernizing prince is driven by regret that his kingdom, the largest Arab economy and the world’s top oil exporter, has fallen behind smaller neighbours. Early on, he laid out a plan to shake Saudi Arabia out of its slumber after decades of gerontocratic rule. But his aspirations are a tall order in a country where the royal family rules in a pact with austere and powerful Wahhabi clerics wary of modernisation. His latest plan to build the 26,500 square km (10,000 square mile) business zone called NEOM -- getting on for the size of Belgium -- captures both the scale of his ambitions and the worries surrounding them. Some executives at the conference - dubbed “Davos in the desert” remained sceptical about Riyadh’s ability to execute its grand design given its primitive legal system and sluggish bureaucracy. The young prince acknowledges the difficulties but has pledged to push ahead. “This is a challenge. The dream is easy but making it come true is very difficult,” he said. That challenges the religious conservatives who have posed the greatest threat to Al Saud rule in the century since it founded the modern kingdom. The clergy has become more careful about publicly criticising the ruling family. Some 30 clerics, intellectuals and activists were locked up last month in what rights groups described as a “crackdown on dissent”. The official council of senior religious scholars praised the crown prince’s NEOM plan and his comments on moderate Islam in a tweet this week. FUNDING CHALLENGES Whether MbS, as the prince is known, will achieve his modernising vision, which relies on the private sector driving growth and providing the state with new revenue, was the subject of animated debate in conference halls. “The project is certainly a novel idea and one with a lot of potential but a lot of details still require clarification,” said Raza Agha, a chief economist at VTB Capital. “Beyond the challenges of funding and building a project of this scale, the seemingly ad hoc nature of this, and other, announcements only serves to add to Saudi policy unpredictability,” he said.

Under Salman’s predecessor King Abdullah there was also a slow though uneven process of liberalisation. But the mood in the capital Riyadh has shifted noticeably since MbS’s rise, with young people mixing on streets and in restaurants where music is played and women dare to uncover their hair and don colourful robes. That would once have been shut down by the morality police, which seems to have backed off. CONSOLIDATING POWER Social changes sparked some resistance from clerics and activists who objected to the prince’s consolidation of power at the expense of other princes, including Prince Mohammed bin Nayef whom he replaced in a palace coup. A wave of arrests last month exposed MbS’ unwillingness to tolerate obstacles to his vision. He must still redress a religiously-based education system and uproot a radical ideology which demonises other religions and sects. On his side in this culture war are many of a young generation keen to catch up with a liberal world they follow on social media, satellite TV and trips abroad. “There is a desire within significant parts of Saudi society to move away from rigid, old-school Wahhabi control of social behaviour and the public sphere,” said Hertog. “There is resistance from conservative forces, but to date it has been diffuse and disorganized,” he added.(kmb33/rtr)

Inside the temple, there is a spring used as a place to invoke holy water as a means of ceremony for Balinese Hindus. Besides, there is a pool that can be used for selfcleaning. It is divided into two, namely a special bathing pool for men and women. Before entering the bathing pool, visitors are advised to use cloth and then step down some stairs to get to the pool. Local people are accustomed to using the pool for bathing, self-cleaning. Moreover, on certain holidays, many Balinese Hindus come to the temple to do self-purificatory rite to get rid of spiritual impurities. Local people visit the temple almost every afternoon to bathe with friends or family. “We bathe here almost every day. The atmosphere is cool and the water is fresh, so that the body and mind feel fresh as well. We love the atmosphere in this peaceful and quiet temple. When bathing, we usually offer some offerings to invoke salvation,” said a local resident. Mengening Temple implements the tri mandala or three horizontal spatial dimension concept, namely the nista mandala (outermost), madya mandala (middle) and uttama mandala (innermost courtyard). In the outermost courtyard of the Mengening Temple sits a garden with pancaka tirtha. This garden is
used as a place of self-purification by local deities. In some places, there is also a source of holy water commonly taken by the community for ritual purposes. According to the temple attendant, the spring of holy water includes the Tirtha Keben, Tirtha Sudamala, Tirtha Melela, Tirtha Soka, Tirtha Megelung, Tirtha Tunggang and Tirtha Telaga Waja. Meanwhile, in the area of Pancaka tirtha garden sits the Tirtha Parisuda, Tirtha Pengelukatan, Tirtha Pengulapan, Tirtha Keris and Tirtha Kamaning. Visitors are not allowed to bathe in the springs to prevent the water from receding and disappearing. In the middle courtyard there are some buildings such as gamelan pavilion, wooden split drum (kulkul) tower, Bale Pegambahan and Bale Pegat. Then, the innermost courtyard consists of some shrines including three-tiered meru shrine as the abode of Ida Bathara Prasada Agung, the chamber is the abode of deities of Gunung Kawi, Limas shrine for deity of Tirta Empul, Pemaruman, Bale Saka Ulu as the abode of Lord Shiva, Paselang pavilion, Bale Pecanangan and Bale Penganteb. When arrived at Pejeng, Sinuhun named them Masula-Masuli. This name is given in connection with the twin birth. During the reign of King Masula-Masuli, the Mengening Temple was only made some improvements. He appointed an architect who really knew about the concept of temples and buildings with the Hindu concept as advised by Bhagawan Wiswa Karma. King Masula-Masuli appointed Empu Kuturan to make improvement to several buildings at Mengening Temple. Wayang Wong sacred dance that only exists at Tejakula village, Tejakula subdistrict, was presented at Maksan Temple of local village on Thursday (Apr. 6). The location is chosen because the masks of wayang wong characters are kept at local temple. They are even believed to have been four centuries old. The players performing the Ramayana storyline start staging the first episode of the Bala Kanda in the Ramayana epic. In this staging, the storyline presented by the players is entitled “Sander Sita.” It tells about the duke Marica disguising as a golden deer to attract the attention of Sita. When seeing the deer, Sita then asked Rama to chase it. Rama went away from Sita and tried to shoot the disguising deer. Marica cleverly cried out for help, and his voice was similar to Rama’s. Again, Sita asked Laksmana to look for Rama as being told to be facing difficulties. When Laksmana followed Rama, Sita was abducted by Ravana. By and large, when featuring the storyline of kanda (book—Ed) starting from the first through the seventh, it will take approximately 4.5 years to 5 years. Chairman of the Tejakukus Foundation, Gede Komang, amid the staging told that as sacred dance it is mandatory to be performed as devotional services or ngayah at the Maksan Temple of Tejakula. As usual, the performance is done twice every year precisely on Wraspati Dungulan or the day after Galungan. Since it is sacred, the wayang wong must still perform the episodes of Ramayana epic sequentially. “It has become the tasks of the players of wayang wong to perform devotional services at the temple because the masks are stored at this Maksan temple,” said Komang Gede when met Friday afternoon. According to him, although it is classified into sacred dance, currently this wayang wong is also staged as entertainment art. For several times, the figures of wayang wong characters are presented in the art collaborations. However, the masks staged in the entertainment are not the sacred ones as those stored at Maksan Temple, but the imitations that are kept by the foundation. Based on the existing references, wayang wong is known as sacred art. This art first appeared at Tejakula village about four centuries ago. From the location of its emergence at Tejakula, this art then spread to several regions in Bali. Although having been widespread, its taksu (divine vibration) never disappears and is kept sacred until now. Wayang wong even becomes one of the nine dances included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. BANGLI — Galungan holiday is only a few days away. A number of Mount Agung refugees in Bangli intend to celebrate Galungan in their respective village even though Mount Agung remains in warning alert level. As planned, they will return to their respective village in the morning to pray and return to the evacuation post in the afternoon or evening.
A refugee of the Kubu refugee camp, Komang Sukreni, when met recently expressed that she hoped the condition of Mount Agung can return to normal. Thus, she and other refugees can immediately return to their respective home to do activities and celebrate Galungan on Wednesday (Nov. 1). Although planning to go home, when met at refugee camp this young mother from Besakih village, Rendang, claimed to have not started making ritual paraphernalia at all. As planned, the ritual paraphernalia will be made at the evacuation post several days ahead of Galungan. “If not evacuating, this time we have usually started making preparation,” she said. In addition to Sukreni, another refugee, Nengah Kersa, also revealed that he is going to return home to Besakih to pray on Galungan holiday. NEGARA - The ranks of Gilimanuk Harbor Police secured nine baby reptiles resembling gecko from Java on Saturday morning (Oct. 28). The nine reptiles were carried by box truck of Bali Prima expedition package with license plate of L 9905 UC driven by Sumardi, 50, from Sidoarjo, East Java. Chief of Gilimanuk Harbor Police, Nyoman Subawa, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation, Komang Muliyadi, said the reptiles were successfully secured because his ranks regularly supervise goods, people and vehicles coming in and out of Bali. Once leaving the ship, as usual all the types of box truck and buses are directed to parking lot to
undergo an examination. After inspection of the cargo, a suspicious package was found wrapped in a small carton and inside contained a pile of snacks. Having been examined more carefully, the officers found plastic box at the bottom containing nine reptiles without being equipped with a letter from the quarantine office of the area of origin. His office provides an understanding for the driver related to the provisions of Law No. 16/1992 on the quarantine of animals, fish and plants where every shipment of animals, fish and plants, animal products, animal-based products, fish and plants from one island to another shall be supplemented
with a health certificate from the Quarantine Office of the area of origin. From the driver’s information, he confessed to only transport it. As soon as the goods were loaded and the letter of goods received from the office he immediately departed with the destination to Denpasar. All the stuffs have been checked in the office and he did not know the contents of the package. Muliyadi said that since being unable to show the document, the driver and his evidence were secured temporarily at Gilimanuk Harbor Police for further process. MADRID - Sacked Catalonian president Carles Puigdemont on Saturday called for peaceful “democratic opposition” to the central government’s takeover of the region following its unilateral declaration of independence from Spain. Puigdemont, whose regional government was dismissed by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday, accused Madrid of “premeditated aggression” against the will of the Catalans. Rajoy removed Puigdemont, took over the administration of the autonomous region and called a new election after Catalonia’s parliament declared itself an independent nation on Friday. MEXICO CITY - Dancing devils, towering skeletons and altars festooned with marigolds made their way down Mexico City’s main thoroughfare on Saturday to commemorate Day of the Dead in a country still mourning nearly 500 people killed in earthquakes last month. More than 700 performers prepared for months for the colorful afternoon procession along more than 4 miles (7 km) of the expansive Paseo de la Reforma. The two destructive earthquakes in September prompted some late changes to the program. A raised fist constructed out of hard hats and pick-axes led the way in the parade, greeted by cheers and applause from thousands of onlookers. Just behind, a group in fluorescent aidworker vests marched with fists in the air - a
tribute to the rescuers who made the gesture to demand silence as they listened for survivors in the rubble from the second quake, on Sept. 19, which toppled dozens of buildings and killed nearly 230 people in the capital. But the strongest earthquakes in more than three decades did not diminish a centuriesold Mexican celebration. Participants and onlookers alike painted their faces as colorful skulls, many in the style of Mexico’s iconic skeleton figure known as “La Catrina.” “For us as a society it was something very violent that moved our conscience,” said Ramon Marquez, 51, wearing an orange t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase #fuerzamorelos (Be strong Morelos) referring to one of the areas affected in the quake. “The parade could be a distraction, a way of escaping.” Sponsored by Mexico’s tourism and
culture ministries, the parade was triple the size of last year’s maiden effort, inspired by a Day of the Dead parade featured in the opening sequence of the 2015 James Bond film “Spectre.” Three young women wore La Catrinastyle face paint, large feathered hats and 1900s-style dresses that they said had been used in “Spectre.” This year’s festivities took on a new feeling of solidarity after Mexico´s deadly earthquake, they said. “We’re not only here to celebrate and dance, but also when there’s a disastrous situation we come together to help,” Violeta Canella Juarez, 31, said. Some 200,000 people attended last year, and local media reported at least 300,000 people at Saturday’s parade. The parade concluded with mariachi mu-
sicians belting out Mexican folk songs from a float covered with flowers and colored paper like the boats that cruise the canals in the south of the city. Women dressed in wedding gowns danced with their grooms, both with faces painted as skulls. Although Mexicans typically celebrate Day of the Dead on Nov. 2 in town plazas, homes and cemeteries, the Bond film’s popularity prompted Mexico City officials to put on a carnivalesque spectacle. BANGLI - Dozens of local guides in the district Bangli were given training related to ethics as well as the history of Mount Batur on Thursday (Oct. 25). The coaching session for tour guides that took place in a restaurant in Kintamani by the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency in order for these guides to be better and more reliable. Guides who accompany tourists on tours up mount Batur were given additional training about the geology of the region. Division Head of Promotion at Tourism and Culture Office, Wayan Merta, said that the competency training for Bangli tour guides was attended by dozens of guides and was organized in collaboration with the Indonesian Tour Guides Association (HPI) and geologists. Merta explained that the guides were encouraged to practice good ethics and charm and were also asked not to scramble
for guests or argue with fellow tour guides in front of guests. “If there are tourists who wish to go trekking in Abang Erawang for example, they should be handed over to guides from Abang who can provide a better service as they are familiar with the area” he explained. The guides were also given information about the history and other matters related to the mountain as it is one of Bangli’s main attractions. This was, said Merta, the guides can provide correct explanations to the tourists, especially those who climb the mountain. Currently the are approximately 715 local tour guides in Bangli, how ever Bangli’ C ultu re an d To u ris m o ffice could only provide training for of them due to budgetary constraints. “We plan to continue holding capacity building sessions for tour guides” added Merta. The teachers at the new school are from Karangasem, from areas within Mount Agung’s disaster-prone areas (KBR). Some of these teachers have to teach at two different schools.

One of the new schools is running out of SMPN 3 Semarapura junior high school that is located in Gelgel village, right in front of Swecapura Stadium which is the largest evacuation post in Klungkung. According to information compiled on Wednesday (Oct. 25), there are 189 students from grade 7 to grade 9 attending classes here. They all come from the disaster-prone areas of Mount Agung. The teachers were previously teaching at SMPN 1 Selat. Nyoman Budiana is one such teacher and explained that the new school has been running since Monday (Oct. 23). “According to the instructions from the education agency, starting on Monday we can give lessons to the children who have been evacuated to Klungkung”, said Budiana. The students, explained Budiana study from 12:30 to 18:00, which is fine because education is important. “ I am also an evacuee. I teach because I feel sorry for the children who have had their education disrupted, especially the ninth graders who are about to pass their big exams” said this ninth grade teacher from Muncan village who was evacuated to Klungkung. Another teacher named Ketut Sudiarta, said that
amid the confusing situation he not only teaches at SMPN 3 Semarapura but also at SD 6 Muncan elementary school located outside the disaster-prone area for students temporarily joining the class. “I teach at two locations, every odd day. We have a schedule” he explained. Although the evacuee students have to study at new schools with the status of evacuees, their enthusiasm for attending class remains high. Teachers do however take into consideration the conditions that the evacuees have to deal with when assigning homework. ‘ We are flexible. For homework, we adjust things to conditions” added Sudiarta. One student named Kadek Arini, said that before the system changed, she went to school in the morning and jpined the same classes as the other students at SMPN 3 Semarapura. “We join the class very happily. Friends here are also good”, she said. Similar education is also running at SMPN 1 Semarapura and SMPN 2 Semarapura. Based in the latest available data, the evacuee students range in age from kindergarten (323 students), elementary school (1,644 students), junior high (599 students) and high school and vocational school (492 students). Head of the Klungkung Education Agency, Dewa Gede Darmawan, stated that the change in the teaching and learning system is to facilitate the disbursement of BOS funds from Karangasem that is very important for supporting the operations including things like printing the semester final exam sheets. “The school is named ‘brotherhood school’ because the teaching-learning process utilizes existing schools”, he explained. Soft opening of RSBM re-postponed
Thousands of Sanur residents rally to ask for job promise
DENPASAR - Soft opening of Bali Mandara Hospital (RSBM) is postponed again for the second time on Saturday (Oct. 28). Previously, the hospital owned by Bali provincial government failed to be launched on August 14 because the operation chamber was still not ready. This time, the soft opening cannot be done because dozens of thousands of people of Sanur held a demonstration in front of the RSBM. People from 28 hamlets have gathered on Mertasari Beach since 07:00. They were originally awaiting the arrival of the officials from the Bali government to provide written guarantee related to the priority of job vacancy at the RSBM for Sanur community. Since no officials came, the community then moved to RSBM around 09:00. The crowds even filled Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, especially in front of the hospital area. While inside, especially in the RSBM courtyard, hundreds of police officers were on guard. One by one the community leaders of Sanur delivered their speeches. Among them, there were Denpasar legislators, I Wayan Mariyana Wandira and Ida Bagus Ketut Kiana. “We are here to fight for our rights in Sanur. We have facilitated the development without any disturbance, and this is a good faith to realize the hospital,” said Wandira. His colleague, Ida Bagus Ketut Kiana, added that Sanur people came down to the streets because the Bali provincial government does not keep the promise. It is related to the recruitment of workers, so far only three local residents were received among approximately 500 workers recruited by the RSBM. Actually, at the time of dissemination on the RSBM development, Sanur community was promised to get quota as much as 10 percent of all vacancies. “We are only given 3 people, are

A day before, representatives of the local community had a meeting with the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, in the office of the governor. At the meeting, the governor said he never promised to give a-10 percent vacancy. The governor even apologized and will eventually prioritize the Sanur community to fill 19 formations in 2017 and 40 more formations in 2018. “Yesterday, it was stated that it (provincial government—Ed) will meet us on Mertasari Beach and give us the quota demanded. However, what is the reality? They did not come to see us,” said Chief of the Intaran customary village, Sanur, A.A. Kompiang Raka, who got the next turn to express his oration.

Raka added that dissemination team should report to the RSBM recruitment team after promising to recruit Sanur people to fill 10 percent of the vacancies. However in reality, the governor does not know anything about the promise. “The dissemination team stated that it has been prioritized in the MoU, but the governor claimed not to know about it. If the dissemination team does not report to the governor, it means it is a harassment of the governor’s office,” said this legislator of the Bali House of Representatives. Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation, Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta, said there are 280 residents of Sanur applying for job at the RSBM. They come from various disciplines. However, only three residents are accepted in the recruitment process of the more than 500s vacancies available. “We’re tired of receiving promises. Our society wants certainty,” he said. According to Sidharta, his foundation has met ten times with the Bali government to discuss about this issue. Lastly, a meeting was held with the governor of Bali at the gubernatorial office on Friday (Oct. 27). At the last meeting, the governor said he would prioritize the Sanur community for 19 vacancies in 2017 and 40 vacancies (security guard—Ed) in 2018. However, there has not been a written assurance. Provincial government that promised to come to Mertasari Beach before the demo did not come. That’s why the demo remains to be implemented resulting in the delay of the soft opening for the RSBM last Saturday. “We will continuously demand until the 10 percent can be met. It is their (provincial government—Ed) promise delivered in the dissemination,” he explained. In the meantime, the RSBM management represented by Acting Director, Bagus Darmayasa, was unable to cope with the demands of society. Before the entire community of Sanur, Darmayasa admitted that he only pays devotional work at the RSBM. “The policy lies in the authority of the Bali provincial government,” he argued. (kmb32)
Refugees remember 1963 tragedy, Celebration of Galungan between anxiety and devotion
MOUNT Agung in Karangasem remains in warning alert level. The certainty of a further phenomenon is unpredictable. Dozens of residents living in the surrounding villages are also still evacuating in Klungkung district. It has been lasting for five weeks. Amid such situation, celebration of Galungan has been around the corner. Their desire to go home to celebrate for a moment is enormous. However, the 1963 tragedy is still very haunting. In accordance with history, this largest mountain in Bali erupted on the Penyajaan (two days before Galungan). Refugees are overwhelmed with anxiety. On the other hand, they want to say prayers. Although far from the birthplace, refugees at Swecapura Stadium, Gelgel village, Klungkung, for instance, do not forget to welcome Galungan day, denoting the symbol of dharma’s victory against adharma. Amidst the life that is not as sweet as it used to be, many of them have made canang (oblation)
and other ritual paraphernalia. One of them is Ni Wayan Munti, 45, from Sebudi, Selat subdistrict. Her hands looked nimbly slicing the bright yellow young coconut leaf. Various oblations she made looks very beautiful. She did not care about the atmosphere of the surrounding bustles. However, according to her, the preparations are no longer like six months ago. There is no mapatung (slaughter pig together). The oblations made are also less to be dedicated only in the mother’s temple or clan temple. “In the past, we have made preparations far in advance. Many ritual paraphernalia have to be made. But now, we just make in a small number and they are simpler,” she said on Saturday (Oct. 28). On Galungan falling on November 1, she is going to go home but not with all the family members. It is only for a moment. Anxieties make her quickly return to the refuge for fear of the 1963 tragedy repeats
again. “At that time, the mountain erupted on Penyajaan Galungan. So, if going home, we will be anxious,” she said. Another refugee, I Nengah Purni, from Parang Sari village, Selat, admitted to missing a moment like six months ago. When doing various preparations, there is a strong connection in the family. She could help each other, mingle and share stories. Similar opinion was expressed by Ni Wayan Sulatri, 60, a villager from Griana Kangin hamlet, North Duda, Selat, evacuating at Lebah Hall, Semarapura Kangin. Unfriendly situation of Mount Agung makes her Galungan celebration smaller, namely just do worship like piodalan (temple anniversary). “Considering the current situation, Galungan cannot be celebrated as it used to be. Nevertheless, we are still saying prayers as an obligation. We’ll go home early in the morning and be back in the afternoon,” she said. Ritual paraphernalia such as canang are made
in refugee camps. It is done through mutual assistance with family where the materials are purchased in the nearest market. In the meantime, the Head of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Klungkung, Putu Widiada, urged the refugees not to return home until Mount Agung is declared absolutely conducive. “We urge people not to return home because Mount Agung can erupt at any time,” he said. He stated the appeal has been submitted to refugee coordinator. “We do not want this (returning home—Ed) to happen,” he described. In accordance with the circular of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, especially in refugee camps will be made a worship place of God (Surya shrine) and ancestor (kemulan shrine) as in their respective home. Melia Bali is scheduled to visit a number of camps set up for evacuees in several locations, spokesman for the management Human ResourscesDirector Frieda Francisca Zuthersaid on Sunday. “There’s a schedule for Melia Bali to visit some camps, such as Singaraja and KarangAsem and we will visit some of spots where evacuees take shelter. ‘Stranger Things 2’ gets darker in aftermath of death and Demogorgon

Mount Agung volcano alert in Bali downgraded
Denpasar - Residents and tourists on tenterhooks in Bali can exhale after the alert status of Mount Agung volcano was downgraded on Sunday afternoon following a decrease in seismic activity over the past week. Mount Agung - the largest and most sacred mountain in Bali had been on the highest alert level since September 22 with tens of thousands of people evacuated as authorities warned of a possible eruption. The threat has battered the economy of the resort island, which chalked up losses of up to $191.4 million - $24 million from the tourism sector alone - over the 38 days the volcano was on the highest possible alert. But Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation spokesman Kasbani stressed the
decision to downgrade the warning was based purely on the lessening activity of the volcano and not other pressures. The exclusion zone has been reduced to an area of between six and 7.5 kilometres from the summit. Only six villages remain within this danger zone. As of October 29 there were 133,349 evacuees living in 390 refugee camps in nine regencies throughout Bali. Refugees who live outside this new exclusion zone will be assisted to return home should they wish to do so. Besakih temple - the
largest and holiest Hindu temple in Bali and a popular tourist attraction - is also now considered safe.An official statement released by the volcanology centre warned that although the status of Mount Agung has been downgraded from four to three, the volcano had not completely calmed down and still had the potential to erupt. Volcanologist Devy Kamil Syahbana said the decision to downgrade the alert status was made following decreasing seismic activity over the period of a week. “It’s a constant pattern. After one week we think this decrease may be a good sign the volcano has weakened its pressure,” he said. Satellite imagery indicated thermal activity was also decreasing and photographs taken by drones
of the crater on Sunday morning indicated less steam. The volcanology centre will continue to monitor the volcano and advise of any increase in activity. As the rumbling Mount Agung took its toll on Bali’s economy, the National Disaster Management Agency last week suggested a less conventional form of tourism: volcano tourism. Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho posted a spectacular photo of a pre-wedding shoot in front of another Indonesian volcano Mount Sinabung in Sumatra - on his official Twitter account. “We need to explore the potential of volcano tourism,” he told reporters. “Malaysia has no volcanos, Australia has no volcanos, we have plenty
of volcanos. As long as we stay in the safe zone it will be safe. The tourism ministry should actually explore it.” Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a fault line in the Pacific Ocean, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
