Phil Collins plans new album, comeback tour

NEW YORK - Phil Collins, the English soft-rocker who was one of the most successful artists of the 1980s, says he is coming out of retirement with an upcoming album and tour. The former Genesis singer and drummer, who has not released an album of new material since 2002, said in an interview published Wednesday that he is installing a studio in his home in Miami and will begin work on a new album in about a month. “I’m no longer officially retired,” he told Rolling Stone magazine. “The horse is out of the stable and I’m raring to go,” he said. Collins, 64, announced his retirement in 2011 but is planning to return to the stage on December 12

in a previously announced charity concert in Miami Beach. Collins will also begin reissues of his back catalog starting in November. Backed by hits such as “One More Night,” “Against All Odds” and “A Groovy Kind of Love,” Collins has sold more than 100 million albums as a solo artist and another 150 million with Genesis. Collins initially moved from Switzerland to Miami after he split in 2006 with his wife Orianne, who brought their two sons to the Florida metropolis.

In the interview, Collins said that the divorce prompted a dark period in his life. “I killed my hours watching TV and drinking, and it almost killed me. But I haven’t had a drink in three years,” he said. He said that he felt more comfortable returning to the road as his sons are older, at 10 and 14. Despite the lack of new albums since 2002’s “Testify,” Collins has worked on other projects including writing songs for the Broadway musical “Tarzan.” Collins said he has convened a band that includes drummer Jason Bonham, the son of Led Zeppelin’s late John Bonham. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country star Keith Urban’s path from Australia to Music City will be the focus of a new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The exhibit, called “Keith Urban So Far,” will open on Nov. 20 and will show the history of one of country’s biggest global ambassadors through his memorabilia, instruments and documents from his childhood. The Grammy-winning artist released his self-titled debut album in 1999 and has gone on to sell more than 20 million albums in his career. Some of the items to be displayed will include his 1989 Fender Telecaster, a Levinson Blade electric guitar played on his first No. 1 song, a shirt he wore on the debut album

At least 12 people tunnelled into the mine in a mountainous region of West Java on Tuesday in the hope of finding gold and were buried when the shaft collapsed. Local police spokesman Ita Puspitalena said the dead weren’t miners but “looters” who did not have the expertise to dig in the mine, which stretches up to 200m underground. “Without the proper support structures, it collapsed on them,” she told AFP. “It’s highly likely there are no survivors.” Local authorities had closed the mine in recent months but looting for gold in the mountains south of Jakarta is not uncommon, she added. Illegal gold mining has boomed in Indonesia in recent years as the price of the precious metal has surged, and deaths are common. Eighteen people were killed after an illegal gold mine collapsed in west Borneo in October 2014. In July the same year, a landslide killed nine men at yet another illegal gold mine in remote Papua province. (afp)

She was also ordered to stay away from the Target store in Van Nuys where she was arrested in August. Attorney Sara Caplan, who entered the plea on Richards’ behalf, declined comment Wednesday. The 51-year-old former child actor received a nearly identical sentence in September after pleading no contest to resisting arrest after she was kicked out of a posh Beverly Hills restaurant in April. The suspect was arrested at 1:50 p.m. at the international arrival terminal, after getting disboarding Garuda Indonesia flight number GA-751 from Sydney, Australia. and Industry (Kadin) Bali, Anak Agung Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said on Tuesday (Oct. 27) that there is a problem with Bali becoming a destination for international criminals. “Our vigilance as members of the community is required in order to ward off such criminals,” he affirmed. There are currently many foreign citizens living in Bali and according to Wiraputra, it is therefore necessary for the public, the government and relevant authorities

to work together to compile an accurate database of foreigners that live and work on this island. “We’re very worried about the impact that the presence of such criminals could have on tourism. The 56-year-old suspect is wanted by Interpol for masterminding a number of murders in India. The suspect was arrested at 1:50 p.m. at the international arrival terminal of the Ngurah Rai Airport. He was arrested after getting off from Garuda Indonesia flight number GA-751 from Sydney Australia. The officers arrested him based on a request for help in arresting or Red Notice number: A-360 / 7-1995. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Although a younger sister to the New York, Paris, London and Milan versions, Sao Paulo Fashion Week is the biggest on the continent and part of a growing southern hemisphere fashion scene. That Brazil’s supermodel Gisele Bundchen chose the Sao Paulo catwalk for her retirement in April didn’t hurt its credibility either. SPFW, which closed Friday, featured winter 2016 collections from more than 30 designers, including local favorites such as Ronaldo Fraga, Reinaldo Lourenco, Fernanda Yamamoto, Joao Pimenta and Vitorino Campos. And as the fashionistas pack their bags, here are three takeaways: Fraga, Campos and Animale seem to be wearing the same glasses: rose-tinted. Pink in different shades found its way into coats and trousers, with Animale combining a pale version

with hot yellow. “I saw a lot of pink, but you have to be careful. It’s a difficult color and you have to take care in how you use it so that it doesn’t become childish,” Brazilian fashion guru Gloria Kalil told AFP. White was also widely used, adding to the light touch. Brazilian winters are a relative concept, so this collection was never going to come fur-lined. Instead the well-dressed Latin American is looking for airy, easily adaptable clothing to cope with those slight dips in the thermometer. “We can use these lighter and more delicate clothes with lace and perforations,” Kalil said. That suits Yamamoto, who goes several times a year to Paraiba in remote northeastern Brazil to visit women making traditional lace, then adding contemporary twists.

“The lace creates a different texture, it’s part of the tendency toward using feathers and rope in an artisanal style,” Brazilian style consultant Camila Toledo said. The southern winter will also see plenty of ankles on show, with designers favoring wide flared trousers rising several centimeters higher than standard. There’s a harder edge coming too. Flower and animal prints have gone with the summer. Stripes and geometric shapes are in, especially in black and white, with collections from Lourenco and the Iodice label being typical examples. The metallic look also caught the eye this year. The always-popular silver was less in evidence, with copper on the rise, shining against a general backdrop of grey and skin-tones. Boots by Gloria Coelho had a coppery sheen, while the Lolitta collection made widespread use of combined silver and copper. “Metals are beautiful and still used a lot,” Kalil said. (afp)

325,000 children to be given new polio vaccine in 2016

DENPASAR - In 2016, a total of 325,000 children in Bali between the ages of 0-5 will be given a new type of polio vaccine. Previously children were given an oral trivalent polio vaccine, but starting in 2016, they will be given two drops of a bivalent vaccine, which as the name suggests, contains just two types of polio antiviruses. “This new vaccine is not a replacement for the oral vaccine that is currently being given but is meant to accompany the oral vaccine with a different type of antivirus. This additional vaccine will be given by injection,” said Ayu Rai Andayani R, Section Head of the Disease Prevention at the Bali Health Office. Polio is a disease that can attack

the central nervous system causing paralysis and even death. It is not caused by involuntary actions, collision or others, rather paralysis occurs suddenly. Andayani went on to say that in March 2014, Indonesia along with other countries in the region were certified as being polio-free. While accepting this certificate of

achievement, Indonesia sated that it would like to remain poilio-free and eliminate all cases by 2020. The province of Bali therefor has three major plans for the eradication of polio. In March 2016, national immunization week (PIN) will be held. This mass simultaneous immunization across will take place all across Indonesia between March 8-15. Since Bali will celebrate Nyepi (Day of Silence) on March 9, 2016, immunization week in Bali will be delayed until March 15-22, 2016. “We have already immunized some people

during a recent polio outbreak in Indonesia. Although Bali was not directly affected, transmission of the polio virus can spread across state, province and state borders, therefore immunization must take place simultaneously,” she explained. In April 2016 the oral vaccination will be replaced with a two instead of three different types of polio anti viruses. The replacement of the vaccine will be done within the government and immunization service providers such as clinics, public health centers, hospitals including private hospitals and

private clinics. “The immunization providing unit will no longer be be allowed to circulate polio vaccine containing the three types of antiviruses, but will only be allowed the give out the vaccine that contains the two types of antiviruses,” she added. Then, in July 2016 the vaccine given by injection will be introduced. Although Indonesia no longer has any cases of polio, vaccination week is still carried out given that the virus that is transmuted through saliva can move easily across borders. (kmb42)

Four issues need to be tackled to save Lake Batur

BANGLI - Discussions regarding measures to save Lake Batur are ongoing. Head of Bangli Environment Agency (BLH Bangli), I Made Alit Parwata recently explained that before any real action can be taken, there are four issues that need to be addressed; pollution, environmental damage, public education and silting. Parwata explained that the real authority to rescue Lake Batur from degradation, lies in the hands of the provincial government of

Bali and the central government of Indonesia. Nonetheless, the government of Bangli will not be a mear spectator. “Authority lies with the provincial and central government. We will however remain engaged in the process along with other relevant agencies,” he said. Parwata explained that technical issues related to Lake Batur, were discussed during the initial meeting. “We deliver that there are four serious problems faced by Lake Batur,

namely; pollution, environmental degradation, silting and lack public awareness,” he explained. Pollution in Lake Batur is said to be caused by the agricultural practice of using chemical fertilizers as well as domestic water waste. Solutions for this difficult issue depend on their being a water waste treatment plant (WWTP) near the lake. As for environmental damage, the lack of green spaces around the lake are clearly a problem as conditions

of the land is worryingly barren. Currently, the depth of the lake is down from 120 meters to 80 meters. Public awareness is also still relatively low and it needs to be fostered. “These four issues must be addressed seriously. That’s why we are revealing them publicly,” he explained. Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House of Representatives, I Komang Carles, delivered that efforts to save this Kintamani lake must go beyond just words. (kmb45)

ISTANBUL — As extremist violence and political uncertainty cast a shadow over Turkey, voters are looking for Sunday’s parliamentary election to usher in stability. But in a deeply polarized country, the most likely result is more confusion. The election is a redo of June elections in which the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, stunningly lost its majority. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for new elections after Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu failed to form a coalition with any of the three opposition parties represented in parliament. The ballot comes at a sensitive time for Turkey, a key Western ally that has major issues to navigate: It faces rising instability in neighboring Syria and Iraq and a refugee crisis that is spilling into Europe. There are also doubts about the country’s once-booming economy — concerns exasperated by political deadlock and violence damaging the key tourism sector. With analysts expecting a similar inconclusive result in Sunday’s election, the key question is whether Erdogan would allow his party to form a coalition. Doing so would effectively force Erdogan to relinquish his iron grip on power in Turkey. There is a small chance that he won’t have to. In the June elections, AKP won just over 40 percent of votes, falling 18 seats short of the 276 needed for an outright majority. When asked about the issue of the cancellation of the plan to replace the Minister of Trade Rachmat Gobel twith Thomas Trikasih Lembong in August 2015, Wayan Suamba confirmed that the replacement will have no impact on the revitalization proposal of the Sukawati art market since the administration of President Jokowi already planned the construction of 5,000 traditional markets, one of which is the Sukawati art market. “It has no impact because the president targets to construct 5,000 traditional markets within the next five years of his office. This means that every year a total of 1,000 markets will be built to sustain the existence of such markets,” he explained. Suamba added that the Sukawati art market is recognized internationally. So, the market it is very important to maintain its existence and not to lose out in the competition of modern markets that are currently popping up all over Bali. “Sukawati art market is an icon of Bali and Indonesia. They’re human and they need to be held accountable, and that’s what we’ve done with Deputy Ben Fields,” Lott said. Outrage spread quickly after videos of the white officer arresting the black teenager appeared on the Internet. One question is if Fields should have been involved in the situation at all, or whether it was a situation that should have been handled by school officials. “We know important work is ahead of us as we thoughtfully and carefully review the decision-

making process that may lead to a school resource officer taking the lead in handling a student disruption,” Richland 2 Superintendent Debbie Hamm said in a statement. Teachers and administrators are supposed to deal with disciplinary issues, and a memo delineates the circumstances under which it’s OK for officers to get involved. The school district and sheriff’s department have yet to provide that document after repeated requests. Lott said Wednesday that both the teacher and vice principal in the classroom at the time told deputies they supported Fields’ actions. An attorney for Fields, Scott Hayes, said the deputy’s actions were justified and lawful. Fields’ was fired and banned from Richland 2 District properties. Federal and state investigations into his actions have just begun, so it will be unknown for some time if he will face charges.(ap)

Sony returns to profit after marathon restructuring effort TOKYO — Sony Corp. returned to profit last quarter in a sign its marathon restructuring effort is beginning to produce results. The Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate on Thursday reported a 33.6 billion yen ($278 million) profit for the fiscal second quarter, compared with a loss of 136 billion a year earlier. Sales dropped 0.5 percent to 1.89 trillion yen ($15.6 billion). Sony’s Xperia mobile phone business was still struggling in a market dominated by Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy phones. But Sony did well in devices, including image sensors and other semiconductors, in addition to games, home audio equipment and cameras. It stuck to its annual forecast of a 140 billion yen ($1.2 billion) profit, a reversal from a 126 billion yen loss the previous year. Sony’s film division did not do as well for the quarter compared with last year, because of a lack of hit movies and the absence of home entertainment revenue from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which had come the previous year. BANGLI - The government of Bangli held an exhibition at the Geopark art market, Kintamani to introduce the products of several small and medium industries (SMIs) and the small, micro and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Unfortunately, the exhibition opened by the Acting Regent of Bangli I Dewa Gede Mahendra Putra lacked visitors, allegedly due to a lack of promotion. As seen Wednesday (Oct. 28), the exhibition held on the third floor of the Geopark art market showcased some SMI and MSME businesspeople from Bangli. The products on display varied from civet coffee, incense, herbal soaps, agate, accessories, paintings, mosaics, silverware, clothing, convection of natural roots, bamboo crafts, Geopark merchandise and herbal medicine. As of noon, only very few visi-

tors had dropped in to see the exhibition, most of whom were domestic tourists.Also some of the exhibitors were not in their booths. Many of the foreign tourists visiting the natural beauty of Kintamani seemed to be unaware that the exhibition was going on. Budiasa, said that the exhibition held by the local government is a very good initiative to support the development of SMIs and MSMEs in Bangli. Budiasa added that in order to be able to draw visitors, relevant agencies need to work together. “There needs to be synergy in the organization and promotion of the festival. It should not be done half heartedly. The Industry and Trade Agency as well as the Cooperatives and SMEs Agency can work together with Tourism Office and

tourism players. By doing so, the exhibition will draw more visitors,” he said. This herbal soap-maker added that the exhibition needs to be well managed too so that it is not just crowded for the opening. “If possible, there should be attendants in front of the exhibition venue to explain that the Geopark art market is holding an exhibition,” he said while explained that he joined the exhibition to gain experience. According to Nyoman, the exhibition should be taken more seriously and not just be a ceremonial event. “We hope this exhibition will continue to take place and that conditions can be ad-

Analysis: Bush comeback strategy backfires in debate

WASHINGTON — Jeb Bush, one considered the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, sought to calm anxious donors with a comeback strategy focused on taking down rival Marco Rubio, the fresh-faced senator from Florida. But Bush’s plan backfired badly on national television in the third Republican presidential debate. Instead of generating much needed momentum, Bush’s attack on his onetime protege raised new questions about his underwhelming candidacy in the primary contest he was once expected to dominate as the son and brother of former presidents. And Bush’s continued struggles highlight a deepening sense of uncertainty settling over a 2016 Republican presidential race that remains crowded and without a clear front-runner. Insurgent outsiders Donald Trump and Ben Carson have unexpectedly risen to the top of the polls, though their performances were checkered in Wednesday night’s debate. In contrast to the Republican field, Hillary Rodham Clinton has been consolidating her status as the overwhelmingly favorite for the Democratic nomination. Even with an estimated $100 million in the bank, Bush headed into Wednesday’s primetime debate at the weakest point of his campaign. Just five days earlier, the former Florida governor announced deep campaign spending cuts designed to salvage his floundering bid. He slashed salaries by 40 percent and shifted staff from his Miami headquarters to early voting states. With his powerful family on hand, Bush spent much of the weekend huddling behind closed doors outlining a strategy that depended, above all else, on challenging Rubio. Bush appeared to get the perfect opportunity to test his strategy when he was positioned right next to Rubio on the

debate stage. The mild-mannered Bush mustered up an attack on Rubio for missing so many votes in the Senate. “Marco, when you signed up for this, this was a six-year term, and you should be showing up to work. I mean, literally, the Senate — what is it, like a French work week? You get, like, three days where you have to show up? You can campaign, or just resign and let someone else take the job.” It was the moment Bush’s supporters had been waiting for. But so, apparently, was Rubio. The firstterm senator, Bush’s junior by 18 years, quickly charged that Bush had praised Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate, who has missed many votes as well. “I don’t remember you ever complaining about John McCain’s vote record,” Rubio said. “The only reason why you’re doing it now is because we’re running for the same position, and someone has convinced you that attacking me is going to help you.” The senator then pivoted beautifully: “My campaign is going to be about the future of America, it’s not going to be about attacking anyone else on this stage.” The crowd cheered. Bush’s team did not. Ari Fleischer, who worked in the George W. Bush administration, said Bush should have attacked Donald Trump instead of Rubio. “Mistake going after Rubio,” Fleischer tweeted.

And Bush never seemed to recover from the exchange, which took place just minutes into the debate. He almost completely disappeared for long stretches. In fact, Bush had the least speaking time of anyone in the debate, by some counts. Despite his challenges, there is no sign that Bush is close to abandoning his campaign. An allied super PAC has raised more than $100 million on his behalf. Yet if Bush World was worried heading into the debate, they will feel no better Thursday morning. Rubio, who has been showing signs of momentum recently, shined for most of the night. He continues to face questions about his ability to build a national organization and raise the money necessary to support it — a problem Bush does not have. Yet his fundraising should improve coming off a strong performance on national television. “This is all part of slowly moving up in the process,” Rubio’s campaign manager, Terry Sullivan, said after the debate. Asked about Bush’s performance, Sullivan said, “There’s no need to pile on Gov. Bush.” The other candidates had varied performances. The soft-spoken retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has led recent polls, flashed his personality at times, but struggled to articulate his policies at others. Trump was on the attack early and often, but also was silent for long stretches. And Texas Sen. Ted Cruz earned top marks from the audience and on social media for attacking the media and defending single mothers. Yet nearly three months before the Iowa caucuses, the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination is an unsettled as ever. (ap)

Greece searches for 38 migrants off Lesbos, four children drown

ATHENS - Four children, two men and one woman drowned and 38 migrants were missing after their wooden boat sank north of the Greek island of Lesbos, the coast guard said on Thursday, as an extensive search operation continued for a second day. The coast guard rescued 242 people off Lesbos on Wednesday in what was thought to be the largest maritime disaster off Greece in terms of numbers involved since a massive refugee influx began this year. The search went on overnight. Four coast guard vessels were deployed on Thursday, assisted by fishing boats. Three helicopters were hovering above the sea. Lesbos, which lies less than 10 km (6 miles) from the Turkish coast in the north Aegean Sea, has been a primary gateway for thousands of migrants entering the European Union’s outermost border. Another 123 people were rescued off the islands of Samos and and Agathonisi, and in another incident off Lesbos. In total, 15 people drowned on Wednesday including ten children, the coast guard said. A baby has been missing for more than 12 hours. Doctors and volunteers on Lesbos made desperate efforts to help a baby breathe, TV footage showed. El Nino drought poses poverty challenge for Indonesia

KARANG JATI, Indonesia - On a dry and dusty sports field in central Java, Indonesian men dressed as traditional warriors take turns to battle with wooden staves, while village women crowd around, chanting: “All farmers let us pray that rain comes and washes our sorrow away.” As in many parts of Java, Indonesia’s main rice-growing island, seasonal rains are late coming to Karang Jati. A drought caused by the El Nino weather pattern, which scientists say could be the worst on record, means fields are fallow weeks after they would normally be sown. So the villagers have turned to a rain-making ritual to hasten the planting season. Crop failures caused by an El Nino drought presage more pain for Southeast Asia’s largest economy, which is already growing at its slowest pace in six years, by squeezing incomes, fanning inflation and pushing more people into poverty.

All this piles pressure on Joko Widodo, Indonesia’s first president from humble origins, who made poverty reduction a priority but has seen it swell across this archipelago of 250 million people since he took office a year ago. The number of people officially classed as poor actually rose in the first six months of his presidency to 28.6 million in March from 27.7 million in September 2014. Twenty of Indonesia’s 34 provinces are currently stricken by severe drought, according to the meteorology agency. The World Bank says that if there is a severe El Nino this year, rice production will fall by 2.1 million tonnes, or 2.9 percent, and rice prices will rise by 10.2 percent. That price rise will hit the poor hardest because they spend more of their income on food than the well off. “Reduced agricultural incomes and higher prices could be devastating for poor households,” the Bank

said in a report, adding that rice imports may be needed if El Nino intensifies. Widodo has provided more funds for cash transfers and social schemes, but so far has refused to sanction rice imports, keen that Indonesia should be self-sufficient in food. “We are not talking about imports,” Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro told Reuters in a recent interview. “We are trying to make sure the domestic stocks are available and accessible.” Other countries at risk of an El Nino drought, such as the Philippines, have taken advantage of low global rice prices to boost stocks with foreign imports. Yamaha boss Lin Jarvis has offered his explanation of the clash between Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez at Sepang, saying the Italian’s frustration simply “boiled over” in the heat of battle. The Australian had already been wearing a face mask for a broken nose when he sustained a cut above his right eye that required stitches. When the final whistle blew on the Women’s World Cup this summer, Abby Wambach was nearly convinced that it was her final championship. The game’s most prolific international scorer — among women and men — needed time to think, though. She didn’t make it official until after a visit to the White House with the cupchampion U.S. national team Tuesday. She is retiring from the game. “I was 95 percent certain,” she said Wednesday, referring to her thoughts following the World Cup title match. “But I also know myself well enough to know that I wanted to make sure it wasn’t an impulsive choice and that I was sure it was what I wanted and it would be best not just for me personally but also for this team.” The response was typical of Wambach, who spent her 15-year career always pushing for more. The 2012 FIFA Player of the Year has 184 goals in 252 international matches. Now 35, Wambach had often said she wanted to cap her career with soccer’s premier championship, the one title she didn’t have.
