LOS ANGELES - A Korean boy band has broken Taylor Swift’s record for the most-watched music video debut - but will the US singer Shake It Off?
South Korean boy band BTS have broken the record for YouTube’s most-watched music video debut. Receiving more than 45 million hits in 24 hours, the music video for Idol beat the former record holder Taylor Swift with single Look What You Made Me Do - into second place. At exactly this time last year, Swift’s electropop hit - which credited Right Said Fred as co-writers - gained 43.2 million views in a single day. BTS’s bright and poppy video, made up of choreographed dance sequences against psychedelic backdrops, has now been viewed more than 90 million times. Lyrics in the catchy pop song include: “You can call me artist. You can call me idol. I don’t care, I’m proud of it... I do what I do. You can’t stop me lovin’ myself.” A tweet from YouTube’s official
Twitter account said: “Congratulations to BTS! ‘IDOL’ now holds the record for the biggest music video debut in YouTube history, earning over 45 million views in its first 24 hours.” The band’s name stands for the South Korean phrase Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates as “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”. BTS’s seven members - V, Jimin, Jin, Suga, Jungkook, RM and J-Hope - are all aged between 20 and 25. Put together five years ago, the group has won a legion of fans (who call themselves BTS A.R.M.Y.) as well as winning top music awards. They become the first ever Korean act to top the Billboard 200 albums chart earlier this year. The record breaking single is taken from their newly released album, Love Yourself: Answer. An alternative version of the song, featuring rapper Nicki Minaj, also appears on the album. (net)
Guardians Of The Galaxy: Third film ‘on hold’ after director James Gunn was sacked
LOS ANGELES - Disney and Marvel have reportedly halted production on a third Guardians Of The Galaxy film following the sacking of director James Gunn. According to The Hollywood Reporter, crew who had been assembled to start work on the picture have been dismissed and told they are free to look for new work. Speculation over the future of the project has been rife since the bombshell dismissal of Gunn last
month, which came after old tweets in which he joked about rape and paedophilia resurfaced. The offensive posts were brought up by critics of the filmmaker, who since shooting to fame has regularly used Twitter to call out US President Donald Trump and become embroiled in disputes with his supporters. Gunn sought to apologise for the tweets, explaining that in his early career as an aspiring comedian he
had tried to get laughs through shock value, but Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn was quick to issue a statement describing them as “indefensible” and announcing that the company had severed ties. Former Scooby Doo writer Gunn - who has worked on other Marvel films, including Avengers: Infinity War - had already finished a script for a third film, which was due to enter full production in early 2019. Hurricane Maria killed 2,975 in Puerto Rico: new official toll
Hurricane Maria killed 2,975 people in Puerto Rico, according to the results of a long-awaited independent investigation commissioned by the government of the US island territory. After nearly a year of controversy over the true toll of the 2017 monster storm, the governor of Puerto Rico said the new estimate would now be considered the official death toll. “I’m giving an order to update the official number of deaths to 2,975,” Governor Ricardo Rossello said at a press conference. “Although this is an estimate, it has a scientific basis.” The Puerto Rican government’s longstanding official death toll from Maria had been just 64.
To get a more accurate assessment, Rossello commissioned the independent study from George Washington University (GWU). The study tracked excess deaths related to Hurricane Maria from September 2017 to February 2018, and found the toll was 22 percent higher than the number of deaths that would have been expected during that period in an average year, without such a deadly a hurricane. “The results of our epidemiolog-
ical study suggest that, tragically, Hurricane Maria led to a large number of excess deaths throughout the island,” said principal investigator Carlos Santos-Burgoa, a GWU professor of global health. “Certain groups -- those in lower income areas and the elderly -faced the highest risk.” - ‘Most rigorous to date’ A separate study by Harvard University earlier this year estimated that around 4,600 people had died in the three months following the storm. Authors of the latest report described it as “the most rigor-
ous study of excess mortality due to the hurricane done to date.” It analyzed death certificates and other mortality data for six months from September 2017 through February 2018. Excess deaths were estimated with the help of mathematical modeling that compared post-hurricane deaths to the expected number based on historical patterns, and adjusted for age, sex and migration from the island. The team also identified flaws in the system that may have led to underreporting deaths previously, including lack of communication and poor training for doctors on how
to certify deaths in disasters. Rossello told El Nueva Dia newspaper that the findings, “in my opinion, demonstrate the catastrophe that we always warned Maria had been, and of course the insufficiency of the standard protocols that we had.” Continued to page 6

Governor grants BMPN 2018 award to six figures
Pastika delivered these words right after granting the Bali Mandara Parama Nugraha (BMPN) award to 6 inspirational and innovative public figures at the Ardha Candra Amphitheater, Denpasar Art Center, on Tuesday night (Aug. 28). The atmosphere changed when Pastika sang the song Selamat Tinggal (Say Good Bye) written by Broery Marantika before closing his speech. Again and again Pastika expressed his gratitude and expressed his apologies to all civil servants in the Bali provincial government and to all the people on the Island of the Gods. The assessment of what has been done over the past ten years, he said is now fully handed over to the people of Bali. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude and highest appreciation to all employees for their dedication and hard work and all components of society for their support and participation in the development programs so they can be carried out well and smoothly”,
he said. Pastika also apologized to all parties who may feel dissatisfied, disappointed, hurt or who feel they received unfair treatment due to his mistakes and shortcomings in leading Bali. Pastika also acknowledged that there are still some provincial programs that have not been implemented effectively or have not provided optimal benefits for the community. All components of society, especially the younger generation, are invited to continuously strengthen the commitment to improve Bali for a better future. “Let us continuously carry out the noble values of community life as one big family of Balinese people, valuing mutual compassion, having compassion for nurturing and paros sarpanaya sagilik saguluk salunglung sabayantaka (togetherness both in joy and sorrow) according to the noble philosophy of Tri Hita Karana and the spirit of living together harmoniously”, he explained.
For civil servants in particular, Pastika them that in their position as state servants and public servants, they must be prepared to devote their mental capacities, time, and even body and soul to the nation, state and society – that their duties as civil servants require patience, seriousness and sincerity. He added that all facilities and government activities that they take part in are allowed due to public money and to reminded them that there are still members of society who have yet to become prosperous. “We must not be arrogant or hurt the people. We are rulers but also servants – serving the community”, he said. It was the last night for Pastika to have the chance to hand out the Bali Mandara Parama Nugraha (BMPN) awards. On August 26th 2018, Hotel Vila Lumbung held a Piodalan ceremony, an event which occurs every sixth month on the Balinese Lunar Calendar and commemorates the anniversary of each temple’s consecration. Piodalan all are welcomed to come and pray, bringing special offerings as thanks for the protection to the holy place and its surrounding community. The celebration includes decoration of the temple with colorful flowers, presentation of offerings, food and special anointing. Robot teachers invade Chinese kindergartens
BEIJING - The Chinese kindergarten children giggled as they worked to solve puzzles assigned by their new teaching assistant: a roundish, short educator with a screen for a face.
Just under 60 centimetres (two feet) high, the autonomous robot named Keeko has been a hit in several kindergartens, telling stories and challenging children with logic problems. Round and white with a tubby body, the armless robot zips around on tiny wheels, its inbuilt cameras doubling up both as navigational sensors and a front-facing camera allowing users to record video journals. In China, robots are being developed to deliver groceries, provide companionship to the elderly, dispense legal advice and now, as Keeko’s creators hope, join the ranks of educators. At the Yiswind Institute of Multicultural Education on the outskirts of Beijing, the children have been tasked to help a prince find his way through a desert -- by putting together square mats that represent a path taken by the robot -- part storytelling and part problem-solving. Each time they get an answer right, the device reacts with delight, its face flashing heart-shaped eyes. “Education today is no longer a one-way street, where the teacher teaches and students just learn,” said Candy Xiong, a teacher trained in early childhood education who now works with Keeko Robot Xiamen Technology as a trainer. “When children see Keeko with its round head and body, it looks adorable and children love it. So when they see Keeko, they almost instantly take to it,” she added. Keeko robots have entered more than 600 kindergartens across the country with its makers hoping to expand into Greater China and Southeast Asia. Beijing has invested money and manpower in developing artificial intelligence as part of its “Made in China 2025” plan, with a Chinese firm last year unveiling the country’s first human-like robot that can hold simple conversations and make facial expressions. According to the International Federation of Robots, China has the world’s top industrial robot stock, with some 340,000 units in factories across the country engaged in manufacturing and the automotive industry. The service robot market -- which includes devices ranging from specialised medical equipment to automated vacuum cleaners –- is estimated to be worth $1.32 billion last year. It is expected to grow to $4.9 billion by 2022, said market research firm Research In China. Caught in a cocaine case
A Russian charged with severe punishment DENPASAR - Charged with a cocaine-type narcotics case, a Russian man, defendant Rybnikov Vladimir Aleksandrovich, 41, faces a severe punishment. The Public Prosecutor Putu Gede Juliarsana in his indictment stated the defendant was tried on the case of five packages of cocaine weighing 4.32 grams. The prosecutor explained the disclosure of the case originated from information obtained by the police that there was foreigner involved in drug trafficking. On April 27, 2018, police conducted an investigation and found the defendant in front of Miranda Shop on Jalan Majapahit, Kuta. Based on the information of Mohamad Sjarani and Nyoman Oka Risnawan, who were in fact the members of police personnel, the defendant was seen on the roadside. Armed with the suspicion, police immediately
arrested the Russian man. From the search, a number of plastic clips containing cocaine were found in the shorts worn by the defendant. Based on the evidence, police then searched the defendant’s residence at Bali View Apartment room #2014 on Jalan Nakula, Legian. Police again found two plastic clips containing powder suspected to be cocaine inserted into the defendant’s reading book. “As the result of the examination, the defendant claimed to buy the cocaine from a man in the F Bar at IDR 3 million per package,” said the prosecutor, while saying the total price of the five packages is IDR 15 million. For this case, the defendant was charged under Article 112 of the Republic of Indonesia’s Law No. 35/2009 concerning Narcotics, and Article 115 of the same Law in the second indictment. (kmb37)

MOSCOW - A recent pledge by Kalashnikov to compete with Elon Musk’s Tesla with a Russian retro “electric supercar” drew chuckles, but the legendary gun producer has long been trying to branch out into products from drones to yachts. The remarkable transformation by the manufacturer most famous for the AK-47 automatic rifle is without precedent in its 200-year history. Kalashnikov produces 95 percent of all Russian-made light arms and exports to some 27 countries. The rifle, designed by the
brand’s namesake Mikhail Kalashnikov just after World War II and described by the company as “the greatest weapon of the 20th century”, is now in its fifth generation. Visitors to the Kalashnikov stand at a defence trade fair outside Moscow last week were therefore surprised when they came across the pale-blue prototype of the CV-1 electric car, based on a 1970s-era Soviet hatchback, standing next to a display of rifles. Founded in Izhevsk (1,300 kilometres east of Moscow) in
1807, the Izhmash factory has seen a series of upheavals since 2013, when Russia’s state corporation RosTec, the controlling holding, merged it with a nearby pistol maker Izhmekh, naming the new company Kalashnikov Concern. Prior to the merger, the factory looked like it would meet a typical fate of many other Soviet-era industrial titans: in 2012 Mikhail Kalashnikov and other veteran employees lamented falling production figures, bad management and low salaries. According to him, there are several obstacles to be corrected such as the reading machine with faster access, and the ability of the counter attendant to implement the system. So, it has an impact on the speed of service for ticket counters, especially during crowded queuing. For this constraint, a more sensitive machine will be installed to read the card so that it also has an impact on faster services. Currently, indeed not all ticket counters have implemented the system. That of motorbikes and cars
or trucks or buses can still buy ticket in cash. “Now, not all (use e-money), but we still use the existing machine while waiting for the new one. This is also to educate the public about purchasing tickets by using e-money,” he explained. In addition to procuring new machines, the ticket counter attendants will also be provided with assistance and training, including English language skills considering the Ketapang-Gilimanuk Harbor is also a transportation route for foreign tourists. Currently, the e-money cards applied to do the purchase is still limited to that of four banks, namely BRI, BNI, Mandiri and BTN. Both in Ketapang and Gilimanuk Harbor, the ferry passengers, especially pedestrians, have been obliged to use e-money in the ticket purchase. Some banks provide counters to purchase the cards containing the balance of money. In the first week of the system implementation at Gilimanuk Harbor, a few passengers claimed to be shocked because they had to pay more. If they previously only bought a ticket for IDR 6,500, now they have to buy e-money card worth IDR 20,000 plus filling in a balance of IDR 10,000 to buy tickets for pedestrian passengers. GIANYAR - A jumbo-sized woven bamboo sculpture in the form of Baris Dancer is now being worked on at Kelodan hamlet, Tampaksiring. The art work with the height of 6.5 meter and width of 8.5 meter is created by I Gusti Arya Udianata, a local artist. This artwork will be displayed at one of the music festivals in Denpasar. Met at his workshop, Rahman revealed the woven statue spends at least 300 bamboo sticks. vealed the making of the jumbo-sized Baris sculpture is dominantly using his instincts and imagination. “The sketch is in the form of Baris Dance in general and I am requested to make it in large size. After the execution, it will be like this,” he said. In working on this bamboo woven statue, Rahman is not alone. In total, he works with seven other people. “The sketch team consists of Aswinoaji and Kadek Agus Mediana, while the management team is Dita. In the meantime, the creative team
is assisted by Kadek Baskara, Edi Karisma, Akang, Sofia, Bebi, Andy and Bli Rahde,” he explained. Everyone has its respective duties. The most important of this work is to make it look alive. In other words, the assembly of the klakat (bamboo frames) associated with the wire must fit. Regarding the costs, Rahman is reluctant to comment because there is management knowing in details. “I just do the execution while the materials are prepared by the committee. I believe that the artist
best knows the art,” he said. As far as Rahman knows, the statue will be placed at the GWK for about 10 days. As the information he obtained, it will be placed in the artist camp area. “As far as I know, the artist camp is a rest area for the performers,” he explained. After the event ends, this Baris Dance statue will be returned to its hometown at Tampaksiring. However, Rahman did not have an idea what to do next with the jumbo-sized statue work. “If anyone is interested, it can be sold because here the space is also not possible to place it,” he said. Rahman estimated that this woven statue can last about for a
month if placed outdoors. Conversely, if displayed indoors it is estimated to last for a year especially if polished with varnish. “Right now, it is a genuine bamboo cane work. There are no additional varnishes or paint. So, it remains natural,” revealed this graduate of SMAN 1 Ubud high school. Admittedly, quite a lot of Gianyar people have made a visit since the making of part by part of this statue. Other than local residents, many foreign tourists also like to see the statue. “They come to see, praise and don’t forget to take selfie. A man left the improvised bomb in a bag near a grocery store as crowds gathered to celebrate the town’s founding anniversary but he and an accomplice escaped, the military said. “One (man) did the emplacement while the other one (drove) the getaway motorcycle,” Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana
told AFP, adding a manhunt was underway. The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, is the latest violence in the south of the mainly Catholic archipelago where a longrunning Islamist insurgency has left more than 100,000 people dead by government count. Sobejana said it was “highly likely” that the pro-IS Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) plotted the bombing. A military spokesman said the blast could have been in retaliation for offensives against the BIFF, adding the group had planned bomb attacks in parts of the southern region of Mindanao. “They want to create and sow terror in the area,” regional military spokesman Captain Arvin Encinas told AFP, adding two soldiers were among the wounded.
The attack comes less than a month after a van bomb ripped through a military checkpoint on the neighbouring island of Basilan on July 31, killing 10 people. IS claimed responsibility for that bombing as well and authorities believe the man behind the wheel of the explosives-laden van may have intended to target a nearby children’s parade. President Rodrigo Duterte put Mindanao under martial rule until the end of this year after pro-IS militants seized the southern city of Marawi last year. On Wednesday, Duterte’s aides condemned the bombing saying it could prompt the president to extend martial law in the area. BUSINESS Despite strong economy, many Americans struggling to get by
Despite a strong economy, about 40 percent of American families struggled to meet at least one of their basic needs last year, including paying for food, health care, housing or utilities. That’s according to an Urban Institute survey of nearly 7,600 adults that found that the difficulties were most prevalent among adults with lower incomes or health issues. But it also revealed that people from all walks of life were running into similar hardships. The findings issued Tuesday by the nonprofit research organization highlight the financial strains experienced by many Americans in an otherwise strong economy. The average unemployment rate for 2017 was 4.4 percent, a low that followed years of decline. But having a job doesn’t ensure families will be able to meet their basic needs, said Michael Karpman, one of the study’s authors. Among the households with at least one working adult, more than 30 percent reported hardship. “Economic growth and low unemployment alone do not ensure everyone can meet their basic needs,” the authors wrote. Food insecurity was the most common challenge: More than 23 percent of households struggled to feed their family at some point during the year. That was followed by problems paying a family medical bill, reported by about 18 percent. A similar percentage didn’t seek care for a medical need because of the cost.
Additionally, roughly 13 percent of families missed a utility bill payment at some point during the year. And 10 percent of families either didn’t pay the full amount of their rent or mortgage, or they paid it late. While startling data to some, it comes as no surprise to those Americans who are struggling to get by. Debra Poppelaars of Nashville, Tennessee, underwent spinal fusion surgery last fall and was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly thereafter. Although she is insured, she owes roughly $19,000 for her portion of the medical bills. Between disability, a job change and the mounting debt, she hasn’t been able to make ends meet and is now facing bankruptcy. “It’s very hard at 64 years old, I look back and think I am in this position and I should be able to retire,” she said. Jerri Wood of Renton, Washington, says she makes choices each month to pay one bill instead of another as she struggles to pay for her health care. Wood has lived for years with a brain tumor that requires regular monitoring and was recently diagnosed with diabetes that she takes insulin to manage. UK’s May pledges to boost Britain’s investments in Africa
JOHANNESBURG - Dancing gamely with schoolkids and meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, British Prime Minister Theresa May Tuesday launched her three-nation African tour by pledging to make Britain the biggest investor in Africa from the developed world. With Britain due to leave the European Union in March 2019, May is seeking to bolster Britain’s ties with other regions around the world, notably Africa. As part of that strategy, May is visiting three of Africa’s largest economies — South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya — along with her trade minister and a delegation of 29 business leaders. May used her visit to Cape Town to announce her government’s first post-Brexit trade pact. She confirmed
that Britain intends to carry over the EU’s current partnership with six southern African countries — Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. She also announced that the British government would invest 4 billion pounds ($5.1 billion) in African economies, without giving details. “I am committed to Africa and committed to using every lever of the British government to support the partnerships and ideas that will bring benefits for generations to come,” May said in a rainy Cape Town at the start of her tour that is being promoted under the slogan “U.K.Africa: Partners For Opportunity.” May has high ambition, envisioning Britain becoming the biggest investor in Africa from the world’s
major industrial economies — the Group of Seven that also includes the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Only China would be ahead of Britain. “By 2022, I want the U.K. to be the G7’s number one investor in Africa, with Britain’s private sector companies taking the lead in investing the billions that will see Africa’s economies grow by trillions,” said May. In response to questions, May endorsed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s controversial land reform plans. “The U.K. has for some time supported land reform in South Africa that will be a legal, transparent and democratic process,” said May. Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon, A Unique Tradition to Invoke Fertility at Kapal Village
Bleganjur gamelan music was played. Hundreds of villagers then threw tipat (rice bag) bantal (pillow-like cake) each other. Although, they seemed to mutually reciprocate, between the two camps (people in the north and south) did not keep any revenge. Their throw was not focused on particular person, but to the air above the opposite camp. Although this looked like a war, they cheered each other due to excitement. It is the atmosphere of the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon ritual or often known as the Siat Tipat Bantal at Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Badung district, Thursday (Oct. 5). Hundreds of Kapal customary villagers were involved in the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon. In addition to the community, this unique tradition was also attended by the Regional Secretary of Badung district, Wayan Adi Arnawa. The ritual was followed by all Kapal customary villagers. All the villagers were then divided into two camps, namely the northern camp and southern camp. At first, the two camps held a ceremony in the temple and were then resumed with worship at the outermost courtyard of the Desa/Puseh temple of Kapal. Thousands of tipat and bantal were prepared by the temple apparatus. After dividing them, they were thrown each other like a war accompanied with bleganjur gamelan music. Rah Pengangon formerly known as perang tipat (tipat war) is an annual ritual having been carried out for generations at Kapal customary village. This tradition is then preserved, so that it is always carried out by the Kapal customary village. “This activity aims to invoke prosperity for all customary villagers of Kapal,” he said. Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon has the meaning of offerings or an expression of gratitude before God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva. Aci means ‘offering,’ Tabuh means ‘echoing,’ Rah means ‘power’ and Pengangon is another name of Lord Shiva. “Mutual throw of tipat and bantal is aimed to bring together the symbol of pradhana (female) and purusha (male), resulting in fertility,” he explained. Ketut Sudarsana asserted that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon is held by customary village because all the villages participated to enjoy the welfare. When arriving at Kapal, his heart was touched when seeing the condition of local village experiencing famine season. Seeing such condition, he then invoked to deity abiding at Purusada Temple in order to bestow his graces. After applying for it, he was given instructions to perform the aci or ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva by means of tipat and bantal followed by all the Kapal customary villagers. (kmb)

Kertha Gosa in Klungkung has been known as a heritage of the royal period. Until now it remains well maintained. The building features a classic atmosphere. There are a number of stories contained in the paintings mounted on the ceiling. What are they? The name of Kertha Gosa has been very famous not only in Balinese society, but also overseas. The historical heritage located in the south of Puputan Klungkung Monument becomes one of the tourist destinations in Klungkung. When coming in, the classic atmosphere can be felt intensely. The Kertha Gosa building in the northeast corner still shows its taksu or divine vibration. Its foundation is made from hard sand stone. The poles of the building with a palm fiber roof covered with carvings give the impression of the past time. Gold leaf color of some painting has looked to fade but still looks beautiful. They are no less beautiful when compared to the carvings of today. In the center of the building, there are carved table and chairs. According to the story, during the kingdom era it is believed to be the venue for discussion on everything related to security situation, prosperity and justice of kingdom region in Bali. Besides, this pavilion served as a venue of meeting for the subordinate kings throughout Bali held every full moon of the fourth month in Balinese calendar (October). A tour guide, I Putu Gede Alex Sanjaya Putra, said the paintings have existed since the beginning of the building. One by one is explained based on the existing references. At the bottom plot, the story tells about Tantri Kandaka, the 1001-night stories whose essence is about all the deceit in society. The second and third plots carry about the Atma Presangsa, depicting the suffering of the souls in Hell found by Bima Sena (second son of the Pandavas) on his way to find out the souls of his father and mother. The fourth plot is about the eagle seeking amrita (holy water of life), taken from Adi Parwa, a story that illustrates how difficult it is to earn a living in the world. Meanwhile, the fifth plot tells about palelindon (forecast and meaning of earthquakes). The sixth and seventh plots tell about Bima Sena when meeting with divine and celestial deities
and fighting to save the souls of his father and mother. Meanwhile, the eighth plot tells about the heaven of the souls and the ninth plot about the god who serves as the keeper of the balance of the four points of the compass of the world. “This painting becomes one of the tourist attractions,” explained Sanjaya Putra, not long ago. Right in the middle of this building area is the Taman Gili. Local community is more familiar with the name of Balai Kambang (literally means ‘the floating pavilion’) surrounded by a fish pond with water lilies. To get there, visitors should explore some steps that also show the old impression. This building has many poles. The carving is similar to the ones in the Kertha Gosa. This also draws the attention of visitors as intrigued by the story of the paintings on the ceiling. Near the brick-using foundation building, there is a small note explaining the meaning of the paintings. The first plot from below tells the story about the destiny of a person predetermined by the day of birth. The second plot depicts the story of Pan Berayut, a fairy tale about the couple having 18 children. Once considered too extreme, Brazilian right-winger homes in on presidency
RIO DE JANEIRO - When Jair Bolsonaro addressed a crowd in a poor, violent area of Rio de Janeiro this week, the man long considered too extreme for the nation’s presidency was greeted with shouts of “the myth, the myth!”
In elections starting on October 7, the far-right exarmy captain and long obscure congressman could almost turn the fantasy of his campaign into something near reality. Loathed by much of Brazil for his insults against women and gays, his alleged racism and crude exhortations for “bandits” to be shot down, Bolsonaro has surprised many by becoming a frontrunner. The only politician currently more popular is the leftist ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a leader who also divides Brazilians -- only in the other direction. Lula would easily win the election, according to polls, but he is in prison for corruption and very unlikely to be allowed on the ballot. That would leave Bolsonaro winning the first round and going into a runoff, something once unthinkable. His rise has been steadily building and without Lula, Bolsonaro now leads polls in half a dozen states, including those historically faithful to the big PSDB centrist party. In Sao Paulo, the biggest and richest state, Bolsonaro polls at 22 percent, compared to 15 percent for the PSDB’s candidate Geraldo Alckmin, a four-time ex-governor. At a campaign stop Monday in Rio’s Madureira neighborhood, the 63-year-old who frequently praises the country’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship, got a rapturous reception. Calls of “myth” have now become a standard feature of his rallies. He’s no great orator and in person can appear to lack the charisma of a leader like Lula. But with Brazilians desperate to ditch the status quo after years of recession, rampant corruption and ever-growing violent crime, his provocative positions
make him stand out. In Madureira, which is surrounded by sometimes almost lawless favelas and where residents live with the constant danger of gunfire, Bolsonaro’s pitch for looser gun control to allow self-defense met with particular approval. “Guns don’t feed violence, just as flowers don’t bring peace,” Bolsonaro said, responding to critics who say that flooding society with even more guns will only increase the bloodshed.

Bolsonaro has built his brand in large part by outdoing the 12 presidential rivals on social media. He has some 8.5 million followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Although well on the right, he has attracted surprising levels of support from some in the center and even the left. Sixty percent of his supporters are under 34, showing that his pro-dictatorship talk sounds different to people who can’t remember the period in person. He has sought backing from the Evangelical movement, which is socially conservative but includes both the rich and often the very poor. Perhaps the message that carries furthest is Bolsonaro’s push for a harder crackdown on crime. Brazil is a country where police are already often engaged in low-level wars against gangs. About 64,000 people die in homicides a year. But ordinary people can see that the war is not working and they are looking for new solutions. Bolsonaro’s solution is to adopt US-style notions of gun rights and self-defense. “If one of us, civilian or military, is attacked and shoots back 20 times, he should be decorated, not prosecuted,” he said in Madureira. “Madureira is a very dangerous neighborhood. Bolsonaro comes with his ideas on security and they win over more and more people every day,” said local Andre Goncalves, who shook Bolsonaro’s hand. (afp)

JAKARTA - Indonesian security forces have detained a Polish man in the troubled Papua region on suspicion of links to separatists. A police report seen Wednesday by The Associated Press describes Jakub Fabian Skrzypski as a journalist who was in contact with Papuan separatists. A military report also seen by AP said he was detained several days ago in Papua province following the arrests of five Papuans who had a quantity of ammunition. Prominent human rights lawyer Gustaf Kawer said Skrzypski insists he is a tourist and doesn’t know the people that police say he is linked to. Kawer said the 39-year-old is being held in an inadequately ventilated cell, given poor food and hasn’t been able to contact family or change his clothes. Kawer, who visited Skrzypski on behalf of the Association of Human Rights Lawyers for Papua, said he doesn’t have formal legal representation. Indonesia restricts foreign journalists from entering its two easternmost provinces, Papua and West Papua, where a pro-independence insurgency has simmered for decades.
Earlier this month, an Australian graduate student whose travel plans in Indonesia included a cultural festival in Papua was denied entry on arrival in Bali and deported because Indonesia’s military had blacklisted her as a “covert journalist.” A decade earlier she had worked as an editor for English-language newspapers in Jakarta and had also produced podcasts for Australia’s state broadcaster. A Polish Embassy official, Igor Kaczmarczyk, said the mission has received “nonofficial information” about a Polish citizen’s arrest. “Immediate appropriate steps have been taken in this regard,” he said, but referred further questions to Poland’s Foreign Ministry. The police report said Skrzypski, who usually lives in Switzerland, had visited a separatist headquarters. It said he had a travel permit for Papua and a tourist visa but had violated immigration law by misusing them. Malik remarked that the recipients can build their country and become leaders in their fields. He mentioned the names of several prominent Indonesian figures who were previous
scholarship recipients, in order to reaffirm UK`s support of Indonesia through the Chevening programme. These included Helianti Hilman, the founder of the sustainable Indonesian business Javara; M. Imdadun Rahmat, the head of National Commission on Human Rights (KOMNAS HAM); and Yanuar Nugroho, a member of the Indonesian Presidential Staff Offices (KSP). One of the awardees, Elfa Nugraha, noted that being a part of Chevening programme introduces her to a vast network of amazing people, both in Indonesia and abroad. She will begin her Master of Business Administration programme in the University of Cambridge this September. According to the official website of Chevening, the scholarships have been awarded to individuals with exceptional leadership potential and strong academic backgrounds annually since 1983. The scholarship offers comprehensive financial support to study for a one-year master`s degree at UK universities. Mattis will continue to convince the US Congress to allow several US strategic partners to buy weapons from Russia without any sanction following the implementation of the Countering America`s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) starting last year, according to one of the points presented at a meeting with Indonesian Minister of Defense Ryamizard Ryacudu in Washington D.C. on Tuesday. In an official statement received by Antara, Indonesia, India, and Vietnam will not be affected by CAATSA. CAATSA has been legitimized to punish Russia for its intervention in the US election and its involvement in Ukraine. Mattis has urged the Congress to ease sanctions
on countries -- India, Indonesia, and Vietnam -- that have historically had relations with Russia but have now inclined to the United States with regard to the procurement of defense system equipment. In response, Minister Ryamizard has thanked Mattis for having convinced the Congress to drop the sanction. Ryamizard remarked that Indonesia`s procurement of Sukhoi Su-35 had been done long before the implementation of CAATSA. “In future, Indonesia will buy several defense system equipment from the United States, such as C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and other heavy transport aircraft,” he revealed. At the meeting, the two ministers agreed to intensify cooperation in the fields of defense and military through the exchange of officials, staff, and command school students; intelligence education; strategic information exchange; and defense industry. “These cooperation programs must be maintained and stepped up in various forms of capacity and capability building,” he added. The Badminton Asia chief told AFP in an interview that China’s dominance of the sport will continue because of their ability to churn out young and talented players regularly. “They are still the best. Chinese will always have enough players in the pool to bring them up and make them world champions,” said Subowo, who is from Indonesia, and is also vice-president of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). “It was just unlucky that they did not have a good day in this Asian Games. The 21-year-old Ginting settled for a bronze after his dream run ended in the semi-finals, to give Indonesia two singles medals for the first time since the 2002 Asian Games. “I hope this Asian Games can be the stepping stone for the men’s players to move forward to higher competitions and improve their ranking,” said Subowo. “I was very happy with Ginting and Jonatan, those were the highlights for me. “Jonatan beat Shi Yuqi and that was a big surprise and then Ginting beat Chen Long and that was another surprise -- so this is a breakthrough for Indonesia.” Subowo has bold plans to expand the global reach of badminton. “In September for the first time we are having the Arab league championship and also in Lebanon we have West Asia championship,” he said. “We have also spoken to (Pullela) Gopichand -- the India coach -- to help us develop this new training centre in his Hyderabad academy to help West Asian players practise and help the development programme.” Subowo believes the popular franchise-based leagues in India and China will help attract young talent and bring in more money for badminton players. “Premier Badminton League in India league has become popular. We have the China league and the Indonesian league,” he noted. “All these leagues will help players earn more because end of the day it is their sweat, their effort.” (afp)

Once considered too extreme, Brazilian right-winger homes in on presidency
RIO DE JANEIRO - When Jair Bolsonaro addressed a crowd in a poor, violent area of Rio de Janeiro this week, the man long considered too extreme for the nation’s presidency was greeted with shouts of “the myth, the myth!”
In elections starting on October 7, the far-right exarmy captain and long obscure congressman could almost turn the fantasy of his campaign into something near reality. Loathed by much of Brazil for his insults against women and gays, his alleged racism and crude exhortations for “bandits” to be shot down, Bolsonaro has surprised many by becoming a frontrunner. The only politician currently more popular is the leftist ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a leader who also divides Brazilians -- only in the other direction. Lula would easily win the election, according to polls, but he is in prison for corruption and very unlikely to be allowed on the ballot. That would leave Bolsonaro winning the first round and going into a runoff, something once unthinkable. His rise has been steadily building and without Lula, Bolsonaro now leads polls in half a dozen states, including those historically faithful to the big PSDB centrist party. In Sao Paulo, the biggest and richest state, Bolsonaro polls at 22 percent, compared to 15 percent for the PSDB’s candidate Geraldo Alckmin, a four-time ex-governor. At a campaign stop Monday in Rio’s Madureira neighborhood, the 63-year-old who frequently praises the country’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship, got a rapturous reception. Calls of “myth” have now become a standard feature of his rallies. He’s no great orator and in person can appear to lack the charisma of a leader like Lula. But with Brazilians desperate to ditch the status quo after years of recession, rampant corruption and ever-growing violent crime, his provocative positions
make him stand out. In Madureira, which is surrounded by sometimes almost lawless favelas and where residents live with the constant danger of gunfire, Bolsonaro’s pitch for looser gun control to allow self-defense met with particular approval. “Guns don’t feed violence, just as flowers don’t bring peace,” Bolsonaro said, responding to critics who say that flooding society with even more guns will only increase the bloodshed.
- ‘Shoot 20 times’ -
Bolsonaro has built his brand in large part by outdoing the 12 presidential rivals on social media. He has some 8.5 million followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Although well on the right, he has attracted surprising levels of support from some in the center and even the left. Sixty percent of his supporters are under 34, showing that his pro-dictatorship talk sounds different to people who can’t remember the period in person. He has sought backing from the Evangelical movement, which is socially conservative but includes both the rich and often the very poor. Perhaps the message that carries furthest is Bolsonaro’s push for a harder crackdown on crime. Brazil is a country where police are already often engaged in low-level wars against gangs. About 64,000 people die in homicides a year. But ordinary people can see that the war is not working and they are looking for new solutions. Bolsonaro’s solution is to adopt US-style notions of gun rights and self-defense. “If one of us, civilian or military, is attacked and shoots back 20 times, he should be decorated, not prosecuted,” he said in Madureira. “Madureira is a very dangerous neighborhood. Bolsonaro comes with his ideas on security and they win over more and more people every day,” said local Andre Goncalves, who shook Bolsonaro’s hand. (afp)

JAKARTA - Indonesian security forces have detained a Polish man in the troubled Papua region on suspicion of links to separatists. A police report seen Wednesday by The Associated Press describes Jakub Fabian Skrzypski as a journalist who was in contact with Papuan separatists. A military report also seen by AP said he was detained several days ago in Papua province following the arrests of five Papuans who had a quantity of ammunition. Prominent human rights lawyer Gustaf Kawer said Skrzypski insists he is a tourist and doesn’t know the people that police say he is linked to. Kawer said the 39-year-old is being held in an inadequately ventilated cell, given poor food and hasn’t been able to contact family or change his clothes. Kawer, who visited Skrzypski on behalf of the Association of Human Rights Lawyers for Papua, said he doesn’t have formal legal representation. Indonesia restricts foreign journalists from entering its two easternmost provinces, Papua and West Papua, where a pro-independence insurgency has simmered for decades.
Earlier this month, an Australian graduate student whose travel plans in Indonesia included a cultural festival in Papua was denied entry on arrival in Bali and deported because Indonesia’s military had blacklisted her as a “covert journalist.” A decade earlier she had worked as an editor for English-language newspapers in Jakarta and had also produced podcasts for Australia’s state broadcaster. A Polish Embassy official, Igor Kaczmarczyk, said the mission has received “nonofficial information” about a Polish citizen’s arrest. “Immediate appropriate steps have been taken in this regard,” he said, but referred further questions to Poland’s Foreign Ministry. Mattis will continue to convince the US Congress to allow several US strategic partners to buy weapons from Russia without any sanction following the implementation of the Countering America`s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) starting last year, according to one of the points presented at a meeting with Indonesian Minister of Defense Ryamizard Ryacudu in Washington D.C. on Tuesday. In an official statement received by Antara, Indonesia, India, and Vietnam will not be affected by CAATSA. CAATSA has been legitimized to punish Russia for its intervention in the US election and its involvement in Ukraine. Mattis has urged the Congress to ease sanctions

BUSINESS Despite strong economy, many Americans struggling to get by
Despite a strong economy, about 40 percent of American families struggled to meet at least one of their basic needs last year, including paying for food, health care, housing or utilities. That’s according to an Urban Institute survey of nearly 7,600 adults that found that the difficulties were most prevalent among adults with lower incomes or health issues. But it also revealed that people from all walks of life were running into similar hardships. The findings issued Tuesday by the nonprofit research organization highlight the financial strains experienced by many Americans in an otherwise strong economy. The average unemployment rate for 2017 was 4.4 percent, a low that followed years of decline. But having a job doesn’t ensure families will be able to meet their basic needs, said Michael Karpman, one of the study’s authors. Among the households with at least one working adult, more than 30 percent reported hardship. “Economic growth and low unemployment alone do not ensure everyone can meet their basic needs,” the authors wrote. Food insecurity was the most common challenge: More than 23 percent of households struggled to feed their family at some point during the year. That was followed by problems paying a family medical bill, reported by about 18 percent. A similar percentage didn’t seek care for a medical need because of the cost.
Additionally, roughly 13 percent of families missed a utility bill payment at some point during the year. And 10 percent of families either didn’t pay the full amount of their rent or mortgage, or they paid it late. While startling data to some, it comes as no surprise to those Americans who are struggling to get by. Debra Poppelaars of Nashville, Tennessee, underwent spinal fusion surgery last fall and was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly thereafter. Although she is insured, she owes roughly $19,000 for her portion of the medical bills. Between disability, a job change and the mounting debt, she hasn’t been able to make ends meet and is now facing bankruptcy. “It’s very hard at 64 years old, I look back and think I am in this position and I should be able to retire,” she said. Jerri Wood of Renton, Washington, says she makes choices each month to pay one bill instead of another as she struggles to pay for her health care. Wood has lived for years with a brain tumor that requires regular monitoring and was recently diagnosed with diabetes that she takes insulin to manage. Rising costs for her care, even with insurance, have her juggling

Only China would be ahead of Britain. “By 2022, I want the U.K. to be the G7’s number one investor in Africa, with Britain’s private sector companies taking the lead in investing the billions that will see Africa’s economies grow by trillions,” said May. In response to questions, May endorsed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s controversial land reform plans. “The U.K. has for some time supported land reform in South Africa that will be a legal, transparent and democratic process,” said May. Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon, A Unique Tradition to Invoke Fertility at Kapal Village
Bleganjur gamelan music was played. Hundreds of villagers then threw tipat (rice bag) bantal (pillow-like cake) each other. Although, they seemed to mutually reciprocate, between the two camps (people in the north and south) did not keep any revenge. Their throw was not focused on particular person, but to the air above the opposite camp. Although this looked like a war, they cheered each other due to excitement. It is the atmosphere of the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon ritual or often known as the Siat Tipat Bantal at Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Badung district, Thursday (Oct. 5). Hundreds of Kapal customary villagers were involved in the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon. In addition to the community, this unique tradition was also attended by the Regional Secretary of Badung district, Wayan Adi Arnawa. The ritual was followed by all Kapal customary villagers. All the villagers were then divided into two camps, namely the northern camp and southern camp. At first, the two camps held a ceremony in the temple and were then resumed with worship at the outermost courtyard of the Desa/Puseh temple of Kapal. Thousands of tipat and bantal were prepared by the temple apparatus. After dividing them, they were thrown each other like a war accompanied with bleganjur gamelan music. Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon has the meaning of offerings or an expression of gratitude before God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva. Aci means ‘offering,’ Tabuh means ‘echoing,’ Rah means ‘power’ and Pengangon is another name of Lord Shiva. “Mutual throw of tipat and bantal is aimed to bring together the symbol of pradhana (female) and purusha (male), resulting in fertility,” he explained. When arriving at Kapal, his heart was touched when seeing the condition of local village experiencing famine season. Seeing such condition, he then invoked to deity abiding at Purusada Temple in order to bestow his graces. Kertha Gosa in Klungkung has been known as a heritage of the royal period. Until now it remains well maintained. The building features a classic atmosphere. There are a number of stories contained in the paintings mounted on the ceiling. What are they? The name of Kertha Gosa has been very famous not only in Balinese society, but also overseas. The historical heritage located in the south of Puputan Klungkung Monument becomes one of the tourist destinations in Klungkung. When coming in, the classic atmosphere can be felt intensely. The Kertha Gosa building in the northeast corner still shows its taksu or divine vibration. Its foundation is made from hard sand stone. The poles of the building with a palm fiber roof covered with carvings give the impression of the past time. Gold leaf color of some painting has looked to fade but still looks beautiful. They are no less beautiful when compared to the carvings of today. In the center of the building, there are carved table and chairs. According to the story, during the kingdom era it is believed to be the venue for discussion on everything related to security situation, prosperity and justice of kingdom region in Bali. Besides, this pavilion served as a venue of meeting for the subordinate kings throughout Bali held every full moon of the fourth month in Balinese calendar (October). A tour guide, I Putu Gede Alex Sanjaya Putra, said the paintings have existed since the beginning of the building. One by one is explained based on the existing references. At the bottom plot, the story tells about Tantri Kandaka, the 1001-night stories whose essence is about all the deceit in society. The second and third plots carry about the Atma Presangsa, depicting the suffering of the souls in Hell found by Bima Sena (second son of the Pandavas) on his way to find out the souls of his father and mother. The fourth plot is about the eagle seeking amrita (holy water of life), taken from Adi Parwa, a story that illustrates how difficult it is to earn a living in the world. Meanwhile, the fifth plot tells about palelindon (forecast and meaning of earthquakes). The sixth and seventh plots tell about Bima Sena when meeting with divine and celestial deities
and fighting to save the souls of his father and mother. Meanwhile, the eighth plot tells about the heaven of the souls and the ninth plot about the god who serves as the keeper of the balance of the four points of the compass of the world. “This painting becomes one of the tourist attractions,” explained Sanjaya Putra, not long ago. Right in the middle of this building area is the Taman Gili. Local community is more familiar with the name of Balai Kambang (literally means ‘the floating pavilion’) surrounded by a fish pond with water lilies. To get there, visitors should explore some steps that also show the old impression. This building has many poles. The carving is similar to the ones in the Kertha Gosa. This also draws the attention of visitors as intrigued by the story of the paintings on the ceiling. Near the brick-using foundation building, there is a small note explaining the meaning of the paintings. The first plot from below tells the story about the destiny of a person predetermined by the day of birth. The second plot depicts the story of Pan Berayut, a fairy tale about the couple having 18 children. GIANYAR - A jumbo-sized woven bamboo sculpture in the form of Baris Dancer is now being worked on at Kelodan hamlet, Tampaksiring. The art work with the height of 6.5 meter and width of 8.5 meter is created by I Gusti Arya Udianata, a local artist. This artwork will be displayed at one of the music festivals in Denpasar. Met at his workshop, Rahman revealed the woven statue spends at least 300 bamboo sticks. It has been worked on for almost a month since the beginning of August 2018. “My fellow sculptor has a friend in the management (of music festival— Ed). Then, he was asked to sketch a Baris dance sculpture and then handed it over to me to execute,” said this husband of Luh Putu Devi Gangga. Although there has been the sketch of the statue, Rahman re-

vealed the making of the jumbo-sized Baris sculpture is dominantly using his instincts and imagination. “The sketch is in the form of Baris Dance in general and I am requested to make it in large size. After the execution, it will be like this,” he said. In working on this bamboo woven statue, Rahman is not alone. In total, he works with seven other people. “The sketch team consists of Aswinoaji and Kadek Agus Mediana, while the management team is Dita. In the meantime, the creative team
is assisted by Kadek Baskara, Edi Karisma, Akang, Sofia, Bebi, Andy and Bli Rahde,” he explained. Everyone has its respective duties. The most important of this work is to make it look alive. In other words, the assembly of the klakat (bamboo frames) associated with the wire must fit. Regarding the costs, Rahman is reluctant to comment because there is management knowing in details. “I just do the execution while the materials are prepared by the committee. I believe that the artist
best knows the art,” he said. As far as Rahman knows, the statue will be placed at the GWK for about 10 days. As the information he obtained, it will be placed in the artist camp area. “As far as I know, the artist camp is a rest area for the performers,” he explained. After the event ends, this Baris Dance statue will be returned to its hometown at Tampaksiring. However, Rahman did not have an idea what to do next with the jumbo-sized statue work. “If anyone is interested, it can be sold because here the space is also not possible to place it,” he said. Rahman estimated that this woven statue can last about for a
month if placed outdoors. Conversely, if displayed indoors it is estimated to last for a year especially if polished with varnish. “Right now, it is a genuine bamboo cane work. There are no additional varnishes or paint. So, it remains natural,” revealed this graduate of SMAN 1 Ubud high school. Admittedly, quite a lot of Gianyar people have made a visit since the making of part by part of this statue. Other than local residents, many foreign tourists also like to see the statue. “They come to see, praise and don’t forget to take selfie. I am myself happy to see that people coming here are very enthusiastic to look at the work,” he added. (kmb35)

Culture Division Head of Jembrana District, I Wayan Sutardi, said the children gong kebyar festival is held as one of the preservation and development measures of gong kebyar arts among children. At the same time, the effort serves as selection for projection of Jembrana’s ambassador in the upcoming Bali Arts Festival (BAF). “So, we will send the winner of this festival as an ambassador of Jembrana in the BAF 2019,” Sutardi said. A man left the improvised bomb in a bag near a grocery store as crowds gathered to celebrate the town’s founding anniversary but he and an accomplice escaped, the military said. “One (man) did the emplacement while the other one (drove) the getaway motorcycle,” Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana
told AFP, adding a manhunt was underway. Robot teachers invade Chinese kindergartens
BEIJING - The Chinese kindergarten children giggled as they worked to solve puzzles assigned by their new teaching assistant: a roundish, short educator with a screen for a face.
Just under 60 centimetres (two feet) high, the autonomous robot named Keeko has been a hit in several kindergartens, telling stories and challenging children with logic problems. Round and white with a tubby body, the armless robot zips around on tiny wheels, its inbuilt cameras doubling up both as navigational sensors and a front-facing camera allowing users to record video journals. In China, robots are being developed to deliver groceries, provide companionship to the elderly, dispense legal advice and now, as Keeko’s creators hope, join the ranks of educators. At the Yiswind Institute of Multicultural Education on the outskirts of Beijing, the children have been tasked to help a prince find his way through a desert -- by putting together square mats that represent a path taken by the robot -- part storytelling and part problem-solving. Each time they get an answer right, the device reacts with delight, its face flashing heart-shaped eyes. “Education today is no longer a one-way street, where the teacher teaches and students just learn,” said Candy Xiong, a teacher trained in early childhood education who now works with Keeko Robot Xiamen Technology as a trainer. “When children see Keeko with its round head and body, it looks adorable and children love it. So when they see Keeko, they almost instantly take to it,” she added. Keeko robots have entered more than 600 kindergartens across the country with its makers hoping to expand into Greater China and Southeast Asia. Beijing has invested money and manpower in developing artificial intelligence as part of its “Made in China 2025” plan, with a Chinese firm last year unveiling the country’s first human-like robot that can hold simple conversations and make facial expressions. According to the International Federation of Robots, China has the world’s top industrial robot stock, with some 340,000 units in factories across the country engaged in manufacturing and the automotive industry. The service robot market -- which includes devices ranging from specialised medical equipment to automated vacuum cleaners –- is estimated to be worth $1.32 billion last year. Caught in a cocaine case
A Russian charged with severe punishment DENPASAR - Charged with a cocaine-type narcotics case, a Russian man, defendant Rybnikov Vladimir Aleksandrovich, 41, faces a severe punishment. The Public Prosecutor Putu Gede Juliarsana in his indictment stated the defendant was tried on the case of five packages of cocaine weighing 4.32 grams. The prosecutor explained the disclosure of the case originated from information obtained by the police that there was foreigner involved in drug trafficking. On April 27, 2018, police conducted an investigation and found the defendant in front of Miranda Shop on Jalan Majapahit, Kuta. Based on the information of Mohamad Sjarani and Nyoman Oka Risnawan, who were in fact the members of police personnel, the defendant was seen on the roadside. Armed with the suspicion, police immediately
arrested the Russian man. From the search, a number of plastic clips containing cocaine were found in the shorts worn by the defendant. Based on the evidence, police then searched the defendant’s residence at Bali View Apartment room #2014 on Jalan Nakula, Legian. Police again found two plastic clips containing powder suspected to be cocaine inserted into the defendant’s reading book. “As the result of the examination, the defendant claimed to buy the cocaine from a man in the F Bar at IDR 3 million per package,” said the prosecutor, while saying the total price of the five packages is IDR 15 million. For this case, the defendant was charged under Article 112 of the Republic of Indonesia’s Law No. 35/2009 concerning Narcotics, and Article 115 of the same Law in the second indictment. (kmb37)

Both in Ketapang and Gilimanuk Harbor, the ferry passengers, especially pedestrians, have been obliged to use e-money in the ticket purchase. Some banks provide counters to purchase the cards containing the balance of money. In the first week of the system implementation at Gilimanuk Harbor, a few passengers claimed to be shocked because they had to pay more. If they previously only bought a ticket for IDR 6,500, now they have to buy e-money card worth IDR 20,000 plus filling in a balance of IDR 10,000 to buy tickets for pedestrian passengers. Governor grants BMPN 2018 award to six figures
Pastika delivered these words right after granting the Bali Mandara Parama Nugraha (BMPN) award to 6 inspirational and innovative public figures at the Ardha Candra Amphitheater, Denpasar Art Center, on Tuesday night (Aug. 28). The atmosphere changed when Pastika sang the song Selamat Tinggal (Say Good Bye) written by Broery Marantika before closing his speech. Again and again Pastika expressed his gratitude and expressed his apologies to all civil servants in the Bali provincial government and to all the people on the Island of the Gods. The assessment of what has been done over the past ten years, he said is now fully handed over to the people of Bali. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude and highest appreciation to all employees for their dedication and hard work and all components of society for their support and participation in the development programs so they can be carried out well and smoothly”,
he said. Pastika also apologized to all parties who may feel dissatisfied, disappointed, hurt or who feel they received unfair treatment due to his mistakes and shortcomings in leading Bali. Pastika also acknowledged that there are still some provincial programs that have not been implemented effectively or have not provided optimal benefits for the community. All components of society, especially the younger generation, are invited to continuously strengthen the commitment to improve Bali for a better future. “Let us continuously carry out the noble values of community life as one big family of Balinese people, valuing mutual compassion, having compassion for nurturing and paros sarpanaya sagilik saguluk salunglung sabayantaka (togetherness both in joy and sorrow) according to the noble philosophy of Tri Hita Karana and the spirit of living together harmoniously”, he explained.

On August 26th 2018, Hotel Vila Lumbung held a Piodalan ceremony, an event which occurs every sixth month on the Balinese Lunar Calendar and commemorates the anniversary of each temple’s consecration. Piodalan all are welcomed to come and pray, bringing special offerings as thanks for the protection to the holy place and its surrounding community. The celebration includes decoration of the temple with colorful flowers, presentation of offerings, food and special anointing. Hotel Vila Lumbung’s Piodalan main ceremony were held in the temple located at hotel entrance, starts from 10.00 am pm to 03.00 pm. Piodalan is not only about to celebrate the anniversary of hotel’s temple but also to purify the resort premises as and as a form of gratitude for all the fortune, health and togetherness that have been given to us all year long. As part of the celebration, Hotel Vila Lumbung team members held a unique tradition in the morning from 05.00 am to 12.00 am, named Mebat. It is a social occasion which usually can be found in the traditional village or sub-village where the Hindu’s community gather together in one place to make traditional foods and special anointing. During Mebat, Hotel Vila Lumbung team member, especially for man, were assigned with different tasks such as preparing seasoning, processing meat and cooking. LOS ANGELES - A Korean boy band has broken Taylor Swift’s record for the most-watched music video debut - but will the US singer Shake It Off?
South Korean boy band BTS have broken the record for YouTube’s most-watched music video debut. Receiving more than 45 million hits in 24 hours, the music video for Idol beat the former record holder Taylor Swift with single Look What You Made Me Do - into second place. At exactly this time last year, Swift’s electropop hit - which credited Right Said Fred as co-writers - gained 43.2 million views in a single day. BTS’s bright and poppy video, made up of choreographed dance sequences against psychedelic backdrops, has now been viewed more than 90 million times. Lyrics in the catchy pop song include: “You can call me artist. You can call me idol. I don’t care, I’m proud of it... I do what I do. You can’t stop me lovin’ myself.” A tweet from YouTube’s official
Twitter account said: “Congratulations to BTS! ‘IDOL’ now holds the record for the biggest music video debut in YouTube history, earning over 45 million views in its first 24 hours.” The band’s name stands for the South Korean phrase Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates as “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”. BTS’s seven members - V, Jimin, Jin, Suga, Jungkook, RM and J-Hope - are all aged between 20 and 25. Put together five years ago, the group has won a legion of fans (who call themselves BTS A.R.M.Y.) as well as winning top music awards. They become the first ever Korean act to top the Billboard 200 albums chart earlier this year. The record breaking single is taken from their newly released album, Love Yourself: Answer. Guardians Of The Galaxy: Third film ‘on hold’ after director James Gunn was sacked
LOS ANGELES - Disney and Marvel have reportedly halted production on a third Guardians Of The Galaxy film following the sacking of director James Gunn. According to The Hollywood Reporter, crew who had been assembled to start work on the picture have been dismissed and told they are free to look for new work. Speculation over the future of the project has been rife since the bombshell dismissal of Gunn last
month, which came after old tweets in which he joked about rape and paedophilia resurfaced. The offensive posts were brought up by critics of the filmmaker, who since shooting to fame has regularly used Twitter to call out US President Donald Trump and become embroiled in disputes with his supporters. Gunn sought to apologise for the tweets, explaining that in his early career as an aspiring comedian he
had tried to get laughs through shock value, but Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn was quick to issue a statement describing them as “indefensible” and announcing that the company had severed ties. Former Scooby Doo writer Gunn - who has worked on other Marvel films, including Avengers: Infinity War - had already finished a script for a third film, which was due to enter full production in early 2019. Hurricane Maria killed 2,975 in Puerto Rico: new official toll
Hurricane Maria killed 2,975 people in Puerto Rico, according to the results of a long-awaited independent investigation commissioned by the government of the US island territory. After nearly a year of controversy over the true toll of the 2017 monster storm, the governor of Puerto Rico said the new estimate would now be considered the official death toll. “I’m giving an order to update the official number of deaths to 2,975,” Governor Ricardo Rossello said at a press conference. “Although this is an estimate, it has a scientific basis.” The Puerto Rican government’s longstanding official death toll from Maria had been just 64.
To get a more accurate assessment, Rossello commissioned the independent study from George Washington University (GWU). The study tracked excess deaths related to Hurricane Maria from September 2017 to February 2018, and found the toll was 22 percent higher than the number of deaths that would have been expected during that period in an average year, without such a deadly a hurricane. “The results of our epidemiolog-
ical study suggest that, tragically, Hurricane Maria led to a large number of excess deaths throughout the island,” said principal investigator Carlos Santos-Burgoa, a GWU professor of global health. “Certain groups -- those in lower income areas and the elderly -faced the highest risk.” - ‘Most rigorous to date’ A separate study by Harvard University earlier this year estimated that around 4,600 people had died in the three months following the storm. Authors of the latest report described it as “the most rigor-
ous study of excess mortality due to the hurricane done to date.” It analyzed death certificates and other mortality data for six months from September 2017 through February 2018. Excess deaths were estimated with the help of mathematical modeling that compared post-hurricane deaths to the expected number based on historical patterns, and adjusted for age, sex and migration from the island. The team also identified flaws in the system that may have led to underreporting deaths previously, including lack of communication and poor training for doctors on how
to certify deaths in disasters. Rossello told El Nueva Dia newspaper that the findings, “in my opinion, demonstrate the catastrophe that we always warned Maria had been, and of course the insufficiency of the standard protocols that we had.” Continued to page 6
