Halle Berry, Michelle Rodriguez speak out on diversity and Hollywood
LOS ANGELES - Halle Berry, the only black woman to ever win a best actress Oscar, said her 2002 win turned out to be meaningless, and “Fast and Furious” star Michelle Rodriguez warned she may quit the action movie franchise unless filmmakers “show some love for women.”
Their comments proved a reality check for women in Hollywood on Wednesday even as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it invited 298 more women to join its ranks in a bid to improve diversity at the organization behind the Oscars. Berry in 2002 won the best actress Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” becoming the first black woman to do so. Fifteen years on, she remains the only woman of color to get the honor. “Wow, that moment really meant nothing. It meant nothing. I thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing,” she told Teen Vogue editor Elaine Welteroth in a video interview at the Cannes Lion festival released late Tuesday. Berry said she reached that troubling conclusion in
2016 when all 20 of the Oscar acting nominees were white, sparking the #OscarsSoWhite backlash. “I was profoundly hurt by that, and saddened by that,” Berry said, adding that it had prompted her to want to start directing and producing to make more opportunities for actors of color. Elsewhere, Rodriguez, who plays Vin Diesel’s love interest in five of the eight “Fast and Furious” box office hits, suggested she was prepared to quit her role as tough street racer Letty Ortiz over the portrayal of women. “F8 (the 8th film) is out digitally today,” she wrote on her Instagram account on Tuesday above a montage of photos from the film. “I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise,” she continued. It’s not the first time Rodriguez has spoken out. In an interview in May with Entertainment Weekly, she said women in action films should have “more female camaraderie, (and have) women do things independently outside of what the boys are doing - now that is truly the voice of female independence.” (rtr)

Actor Johnny Galecki says worth living in rural California despite burned ranch

CALIFORNIA - A ranch belonging to “Big Bang Theory” star Johnny Galecki has burned down in a California wildfire but the actor said living in the area was worth it despite the risk of fires. Galecki, 42, who plays nerdy experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter in the hit TV comedy series, was not at home on Monday when the brush fire consumed his ranch in countryside near San Luis Obispo in central California. The fast-moving fire scorched some 1,600 acres (650 hectares)
and forced about 250 people to evacuate their homes. Three structures were destroyed, San Luis Obispo fire officials said on Tuesday. “My heart goes out to all in the area who are also experiencing loss from this vicious fire, the threat of which we live with constantly, which may seem crazy to some but we do so because living in our beautiful, rural area makes it worthwhile,” Galecki said in a statement. “So very relieved no one has
been hurt,” he added. Galecki, who is among the highest-paid stars on television, thanked fire fighters, praised the local community and said that he planned to rebuild. “We’ve done it before and we will need to do it together again, “ he said. California’s hot dry summer season leaves the state subject to thousands of wildfires in rural areas every year, prompting debate over the encroachment of homes deeper into hilly fire-prone areas and how to protect them. Apple’s iPhone turns 10, bumpy start forgotten
Apple Inc’s iPhone turns 10 this week, evoking memories of a rocky start for the device that ended up doing most to start the smartphone revolution and stirring interest in where it will go from here. Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones since June 29, 2007, but the first iPhone, which launched without an App Store and was restricted to the AT&T Inc network, was limited compared to today’s version. After sluggish initial sales, Apple slashed the price to spur holiday sales that year. “The business model for year one of the iPhone was a disaster,” Tony Fadell, one of the Apple developers of the device, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. “We pivoted and figured it out in year two.” The very concept of the iPhone came as a surprise to some of Apple’s suppliers a decade ago, even

Jane Chen’s Puja Mask Dance Yearly offering to the spirit of creation
Building on decades of exploration and practice of White Crane Silat, 15th century Javanese sacred chanting, tibetan singing bowl healing, contemporary dance, making essential oils, and a variety of other healing modalities, Jane Chen clearly takes great pleasure in sharing her wealth of experience with other artists and the public alike.
After years of putting together performances that feature talented artists from Bali and other parts of Indonesia in her Bali Onstage shows, Jane decided to create a space where the wealth of Indonesian performing arts could expand into contemporary creations. Saraswati Pavillion, in Canggu is a traditional Javanese ‘gazebo’ and served as the setting for the staging of Jane Chen’s annual Puja Mask Dance this year. The mask she wears in
this dance depicts Sekartaji, a character from the ancient Javanese Panji stories. Jakarta native Jane Chen has been living in Bali for over 30 years and has been performing her Puja Mask Dance once a year since 2003, The essence of this dance is devotional offering and although Jane brings a different aspect of herself to it every year, she always performs it as an offering, to Bali, to her masters, to those who have come before us, to nature, to
Creator. This year, Jane dedicated her dance to her teacher the late Roejito from whom she received the essence of stage presence. The dance, she explained is “a tribute to all those who have touched our lives, to all teachers and masters, to mother nature to our Great Creator and tonite’s Puja Mask Dance is also dedicated to a true artist of life, who touched the lives of many in Bali and inspired many people around the world: the beloved Linda Garland who passed away earlier this year”, explained Jane. The evening’s performances also included a new choreography by Jane Chen, performed by Sefi, entitled ‘The Alphabet of Scent’ in which essential oil scents were an integral part of the choreography. This dance is the first of many to follow and part of a series of four dances that Jane has been performing and elaborating on for some years. The honouring of the endless cycles of birth, death and rebirth was poignantly expressed in an evening that paid homage to the beauty developed over millennial by the people of Indonesia as expressed through their descendants: Jane Chen, dancers Sefi and 8 year old daughter Vio, musicians Barok, Safril and Ajat Lesmana along with light and sound engineer Jonas Sestakresna. Their musical, olfactory and somatic expressions were distinctly contemporary but at the same time clearly rooted in the traditions of this great archipelago that have inspired so many people from all over the world and that came together in a way that gave hope for a better future to all who were present. Australia welcomes charges against alleged Bali bombing mastermind
SYDNEY - Australia welcomed charges against a Guantanamo Bay prisoner accused of masterminding the 2002 Bali bombings in which 202 people were killed, including 88 Australians. Indonesian-born militant Riduan Isamuddin, also known as Hambali, is accused of overseeing the 2002 Bali bombings and an attack on the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003 that killed 12 people. “I hope that should this prosecution succeed, it will bring closure to those devastated by the loss of loved ones, family and friends,” Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told reporters. “It has been a scar on the hearts of all Australians since these attacks occurred
in 2002.” Hambali was charged on seven different counts, including terrorism and murder in violation of the law of war, the Miami Herald reported, citing a charge sheet dated June 20. He is accused of directing three explosions on October 12, 2002, which hit a bar, nightclub and the U.S. Consulate on the Indonesian resort island.Two Islamist suicide bombers detonated explosives at the nightspots packed with tourists, killing 202 people. For Australia, which suffered the most casualties, the Bali bombs were the worst peacetime attack on its citizens, many of whom regard a holiday on sun-drenched Bali as a rite of passage. Seven Americans and 38 Indo-
nesians citizens were also among the dead. Hambali was captured in Bangkok, Thailand in 2003 and has been held in Guantanamo Bay without charge since 2006. The Afghanistan-war veteran dubbed the “Osama bin Laden of Southeast Asia” was seen as the main link between Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) and Al-Qaeda. Bishop said Australia would provide whatever support it could, but did not support the death penalty. “Those responsible for the murder of 202 people, including 88 Australians, should be prosecuted, should receive the severest of punishment and should never be freed,” she said. Making Ivanka Trump shoes: Long hours, low pay and abuse
GANZHOU — A worker with blood dripping from his head marked a low point in the tense, grinding life at a southeastern China factory used by Ivanka Trump and other fashion brands. An angry manager had hit him with the sharp end of a highheeled shoe. Workers from the factory, including one current and two former employees who spoke to The Associated Press, reported overtime that stretched past midnight, steep production quotas and crude verbal abuse at Ganzhou Huajian International Shoe City Co. They said beatings were not unheard of, but the shoe attack, which all three say they witnessed last year, was violent enough to stand out. “He was bleeding right from the middle of the head,” the current worker said. “There was a lot of blood. He went to the factory’s nurse station, passing by me,” said a second man, who said he quit his job at Huajian because of the long hours and low pay. The three workers are the first people with direct knowledge of conditions at the Ganzhou factory to speak with the media. All three spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, for fear of retribution or arrest. Last month, three men investigating conditions at the Huajian Group factory in Ganzhou were detained, accused of illegally using secret recording devices to steal commercial secrets. They, like one of the three men AP spoke with, worked with China Labor Watch, a New York group that has been investigating Ivanka Trump’s Chinese suppliers for more than a year. The group said the men were released on bail Wednesday, the final day of their legally mandated 30-day detention period limit. Li Qiang, founder of China Labor Watch, describes Huajian’s Ganzhou factory as among the worst he has seen in nearly two decades investi-
gating labor abuses. His group says pay can be as low as a dollar an hour, in violation of China’s labor laws. According to China Labor Watch investigators, until recently, workers might get only two days off — or less — per month. China Labor Watch said the company forced workers to sign fake pay stubs with inflated salary amounts and threatened to fire workers if they didn’t fill in questionnaires about working conditions with preapproved answers. Workers also said the company pressured people not to speak with outsiders about conditions at the factory. In comments to the AP, the Huajian Group declined to respond to specific questions, but broadly denied all allegations, calling them “completely not true to the facts, taken out of context, exaggerated.”
The company said it operates lawfully and that China Labor Watch “invented so-called ‘facts’ by illegal means of buying undercover work, which has already affected the enterprise’s normal business seriously and affected the survival and employment of tens of thousands of staff.” The company noted its significant contribution to the economy and to society, par-
ticularly through its employment of disabled people. Before taking on an official role as adviser to her father, Ivanka Trump stepped back from day-to-day management of her brand, but she has retained her ownership interest. In Washington on Tuesday, she spoke at a ceremony unveiling the annual U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report, in which China was demoted to the lowest ranking over its human trafficking record. She said the report is “clarion call into action in defense of the vulnerable and the exploited.” She has not commented, however, on the detentions or the reports of poor working conditions at one of her brand’s suppliers. Her spokeswoman declined to comment for this story. Abigail Klem, president of the
Ivanka Trump brand, said “the integrity of our supply chain is a top priority and we take all allegations very seriously.” The company says its products have not been made in the factory since March, but China Labor Watch said it had an April production schedule indicating that nearly 1,000 pairs of Ivanka Trump shoes were due in May. In the past, some brands have used China Labor Watch’s reports as a tool to help keep their supply chains clean. Walt Disney Co., for example, investigated and ultimately decided to sever its relationship with at least one supplier following reports of poor conditions, and sought to improve labor practices at others. China Labor Watch outlined its findings in letters sent in June to Ivanka Trump at the White House and to other brands. So far, the group says it has gotten no response. The group said it also sent Ivanka Trump a video taken inside the factory in May. That video included a clip in which a manager threatened to rough up a worker who had ap-
parently arranged shoes in the wrong order. “If I see them f---ing messed up again,” the manager yells, “I’ll beat you right here.” The video has not been released to the public, but it was shown to AP at China Labor Watch’s office in New York. Marc Fisher, which has made shoes for Ivanka Trump and Easy Spirit at the Ganzhou factory, has said it would look into the allegations. G-III Apparel Group, which produces shoes for Karl Lagerfeld, said it had not received a letter but “fully supports the independent monitoring of global supply chains.” “When workplace safety and fairness issues are brought to our attention, we take them very seriously and work with our partners to resolve them,” G-III spokesman Chris Giglio said in an email. Ann Taylor spokesman Shawn Buchanan also said the company takes the allegations “very seriously” and is “actively conducting an investigation to assess this facility’s compliance with our code of conduct and applicable laws and regulations.” The Kendall & Kyle brand said its “footwear manufacturer works with many footwear production factories and all factories are required to operate within strict social compliance regulations.” Other brands identified by China Labor Watch as customers of the Ganzhou factory include Nine West, Naturalizer and the Camuto Group, which makes shoes for BCBG Max Azria, Jessica Simpson and Tory Burch. None responded to requests for comment. The current Huajian employee who spoke to the AP said life at the factory has changed since the arrests of the three investigators brought the glare of public attention. Overtime was radically reduced this month, he said. Shifts used to run from 7:10 a.m. until after 9 p.m.
or 10 p.m., and sometimes after midnight, with two daily breaks, he and a former employee both said. But for the last few weeks, workers have been released before 7 p.m. They’re also starting to get every Sunday off, which is standard under Chinese labor law, said the current employee, who also moonlights for China Labor Watch. City government officials turned up recently, he said, and the factory gave everyone an egg to eat in the middle of their afternoon shift. Life inside Ganzhou Huajian is focused on a single number: the monthly quota of shoes that must be produced, according to China Labor Watch investigators and workers. A single production line of 50 workers may need to produce close to 30,000 pairs of shoes, depending on seasonal demand, the current employee and one former employee told AP. Those who miss their targets do not collect the full salary, said the current employee. “It is impossible to meet the target, actually, because it just keeps on going up,” the former employee said. The new abbreviated working hours are a mixed blessing, the current employee said, because they haven’t been able to meet production targets. Huajian, meanwhile, has been moving production to Ethiopia, where workers make around $100 a month, a fraction of what they pay in China, according to Song Yiping, a manager at Huajian’s Ethiopian factory, who spoke to the AP in January. He said he’s heard President Trump talk about bringing jobs back to America, but he doubts that will happen with shoes. Even Chinese vocational school dropouts don’t want to work for Ethiopian wages. “The American clients push down the price,” Song explained. “Consumers want to buy cheaper shoes.” (ap)

Candidasa thronged by visitors, merchants look happy AMLAPURA — Since the beginning of the Eid alFitr holiday, Karangasem’s touristic area of Candidasa has been crowded with tourists. Peak density occurred on Monday (Jun. 26), but on Tuesday (Jun. 27) the area was still crowded.
“Compared to ordinary days, it is quite crowded. The most crowded day was the second day of the Eid (Monday—Ed),” said a parking attendant hanging out in the area of Batubelah Beach. After having become eroded by abrasion, this beach was repaired several years ago when Karangasem was leadership of Regent Wayan Geredeg. This beach has now become popular with tourists visiting Candidasa.
The recent surge in tourists is made up of predominantly domestic visitors but merchants in the area are happy with the results. These visitors not only come to enjoy the scenery of the ocean but also to enjoy tasting local delicacies like meatballs. “ Thankfully it is quite crowded so sales have been good” said one merchant. Food vendors are not the only ones doing good business. Sunglass seller, 40 year-old Budi said that he had sold IDR 250,000 worth of merchandise on Tuesday, whereas he usually makes about IDR 70,000 a day. Even though the peak density of visitors had passed, this merchant from Kecicang Islam, Bungaya Kangin village, Bebandem, was still doing well. He explained that about three days ago tourists starting coming to the beach at around 9:00 and that the

SINGARAJA — Tejakula village or district has long been famous as a salt producer area. However, since several years ago, the number of farmers has decreased. One of the reasons is due to the prospects considered to be less promising. One of the salt farmers, Wayan Supartini, 45, said the production of flavored kitchen salt remains to be cultivated by a number of people. However, when compared to the period before 2010, farmers are currently very few. “In the past, their number reached tens of people. Along the beach from the west to the east, there are many places used for salt farming. Now, there are about 10 locations left,” he said on Wednesday (Jun. 28). Decrease in the amount, continued this fatplated woman, happens because the results considered no longer promising. Each cultivated land can only produce around 10 kg of salt per two days and the selling price remains stagnant at IDR 7,000 per kg. “The result is considered quite small,” he explained. The condition also happens due to the recent weather frequently raining so that disrupts the process of salting in addition to land conversion. “A lot of land for salt farming has been sold because people need money,” he said. In the meantime, especially for her, producing salt is only used as an odd job, helping her husband earn income as a fisherman. “This is only for a side job. Papal adviser Pell denies sexual abuse charges, will return to Australia

SYDNEY - Cardinal George Pell, a top adviser to Pope Francis, said on Thursday he was innocent of charges of sexual abuse in his native Australia, and that the pontiff had given him leave of absence to return there to defend himself.

These new tour packages created by Baktisegara Villages’s Sari Segara fishermen group have proven to be a success. From morning until late afternoon, crowds of visitors were eagerly awaiting the chance to see the coral or dolphins. Using motorboats, fishermen charge a flat fee of IDR 60,000 per person per hour to see the marine mammals in their natural habitat. The fishermen group has been cooperating with
tour operators from other parts of Bali for the dolphin tours. Visitors can also see the lovely marine garden from boats or by renting snorkeling gear for IDR 10,000. This newly introduced and very affordable service easily satisfies visitors. One fisherman named Kadek Agus, said on Tuesday (Jun. 27) that visitors really enjoy the view of the coral gardens and dolphin attraction at Penimbangan Beach. The coral gardens, he explained had been severly damaged but were rehabilitated. Because the water here is clean and clear, visitors can enjoy a great view of the coral from boats but they also welcome to get into the water with snorkeling gear to capture underwater pictures. “We also offer educational tours for youngsters so that
they can learn more about marine biota. Children really enjoy the underwater panaorama that they can comfortably view form a baot” he explained. Local fishermen, continued Kadek Agus have also been engaged in protected turtle eggs that are often hatched on Penimbangan Beach. Even though they do not yet have a turtle breeding facility, they are often asked to provide educational tours for children about the turtles. The breeding cages provided by generous benefactors are not enough so the fisherman’s group eagerly awaits government assistance so that they can create small enclosures for the eggs to hatch in safety. “We often host educational tours but the ‘cages’ that we have been able to make are not very good. If we can improve these facilities, we believe that visitors –especially children, will be increasingly pleased with their experience”, he explained. (kmb38)

Marie Collins, the top non-clerical member of a papal commission on abuse, resigned in frustration this year, citing “shameful” resistance to change within the Vatican. Church sexual abuse broke into the open in 2002, when it was discovered that U.S. bishops in the Boston area had simply moved abusers to new posts instead of defrocking them. Thousands of cases have come to light around the world as investigations have encouraged long-silent victims to go public, shattering the Church’s standing in places such as Ireland, and tens of millions of dollars have been paid in compensation. “I would suspect (the charges against Pell) are going to be stunning to the Vatican and to the pope himself,” said Thomas P. HONG KONG - Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday China would work to ensure a “far-reaching future” for Hong Kong’s autonomy, but he faces a divided city with protesters angered by Beijing’s perceived interference as it marks 20 years of Chinese rule. Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997, under a “one country, two systems” formula which guarantees wide-ranging freedoms and judicial independence unseen in mainland China. Beijing has promised Hong Kong’s capitalist system will remain unchanged for “at least” 50 years until 2047, but it has not clarified what happens after that. “Hong Kong has always tugged at my heartstrings,” Xi said on arrival at Hong Kong airport for the handover anniversary in front of flag-waving crowds at the start of a three-day visit. “... We are willing, together with different sectors of Hong Kong society, to look back on Hong Kong’s unusual course in the past 20 years, draw conclusions from the experience, look into the future and to ensure ‘one country, two systems’ is stable and has a far-reaching future.” Xi’s message was consistent with those of other senior Chinese leaders visiting Hong Kong in the past, that Beijing would safeguard the city’s development, prosperity and people’s livelihoods. In reality, however, fears of the creeping influence of Communist Party leaders in Beijing have been starkly exposed in recent years by the abduction by mainland agents of some Hong Kong booksellers who specialised in politically sensitive material and Beijing’s efforts in disqualifying two pro-independence lawmakers elected to the city legislature. Xi did not respond to journalists, including one who asked whether Liu Xiaobo, China’s Nobel Peace Laureate and jailed dissident, would be released and allowed to travel overseas to be treated for cancer. Speaking later, Xi praised Hong Kong’s outgoing leader, Leung Chun-ying, who cracked down hard on pro-democracy Occupy protests in 2014, for his substantial contributions to the country, “especially safeguarding national security”. “These past five years have not been easy at all,” Xi added. Artifacts convey the pain of ordinary people: A Buddha statue that a businessman confided in because he couldn’t face telling his family of his ruin. An office phone over which a woman learned that her bankrupt boss had killed himself. “I experienced it but wasn’t severely affected because I was still in school,” said Taweesak Woraritruengaurai, the exhibition’s curator. “But when I got to see all these things that are full of stories, I could feel how real it was and how much it affected many aspects of life. It affected people very deeply.”
Today, Thailand’s banking and finance sector seems more secure. Experts say crucial lessons were learned in 1997. The chances of a rerun, they say, are slim. When the global crisis struck a decade later, Asia’s financial systems were relatively insulated, with less direct exposure to the toxic subprime mortgages that wreaked havoc on U.S. and European markets. “I don’t think there will be another financial crisis,” said economics professor Apichart Satitniramai of Thammasat University. “Firstly, there’s a high capital adequacy ratio, which can support more risk,” he said, referring to the reserves banks must keep to deal with possible crises. “Secondly, banks and financial institutions have changed their behavior drastically, compared to the time before the financial crisis occurred,” Apichart said. Thailand and other Asian countries also have bulked up their foreign currency reserves, a key
buffer for a country facing economic turmoil because they can be used to defend its currency, provide liquidity and generally shore up financial systems. Not everyone has moved on. In 1997, Sirivat Voravetvuthikun was a successful stock trader, so adept at picking the right stocks that other traders called him “the Phantom.” After he went bust he began selling sandwiches from a yellow foam box hanging from his neck. He became famous as a symbol of determination and hope. Today, he’s still doing it. His attempts to grow his food business have failed, leaving him stuck where he landed in 1997. But his will to pull through burns as bright as ever. He says, “I am telling myself and others in society, even though the Thai economy is not good, if we keep fighting, cut our costs, do whatever we can, work hard to earn as much as we can, we’ll survive and one day the economy will get better.”(rtr)
A Unique Tourist Attraction Merging Art and Culture
Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace, Ubud, is not too different from other palaces in the tourism village area. It is located at Kertawangsa hamlet, Lodtunduh, Ubud, Gianyar, or about 22 km from Denpasar. Its cultural and art activities always go hand in hand. So, do not be surprised if every day hundreds of tourists from various countries make a visit to the palace. The most prominent activities are majejahitan (preparing oblation), rituals and customary activities of ancient royal descendants. Housewives are sitting to make some offerings while joking with their sisters. Rituals are performed daily and on certain days as well as other activities. “The activity of preparing oblation and ritual has become our tradition in the palace,” said a senior figure of Saren Kelod Palace, Cokorda Anom Puri Dalem. Saren Kelod is a main family of Lodtunduh Grand Palace, Ubud. This palace still preserves its noble traditions. One of them is keeping the legacy of kiwa tengan and usadha (healing) palm-leaf manuscript and kris dagger named Ki Bintang Kukus and Ki Karang Suwung. “This palace is a part of Lodtunduh Grand Palace built around 1818,” said Cok Anom. In the past, this palace is very ancient because the wall is made of patching soil. However, the building was then refurbished by still putting forward traditional ornaments that refer to the Balinese geomancy or Kosala-Kosali concept. “I used to be an artist who made sculptures and
paintings. All the works we preserve by making a studio or gallery to display all the paintings belonging to various styles,” he added. The gallery is named Semar Kuning I Artist Cooperative Painting. If only seen from the highway, it will look like a palace because people will only see a magnificent palace filled with traditional ornaments. This gallery displays Cok Anom’s paintings and the works of other artists in Bali. Although the gallery is prepared for foreign tourists, local people are also allowed to see it. “We prepare a tourist attraction, so that all permits should have been met properly,” he said. Collection of the paintings presents a variety of themes with various sizes that can certainly provide inspiration for those who see it. When entering the lobby, visitors will see people painting. Approximately seven artists are making a demonstration of painting. They also teach children to make sketches or paint as well as give color according to the theme. “Surely, the action of the artists becomes an attraction as well,” he said. Each room has a different style of
painting. For example, in the room of modern-style painting there are paintings of various styles such as realists and naturalists. The size also varies from the smallest measuring 40 cm x 60 cm and the largest can reach to 2 meters x 3 meters. Similarly, in the room of abstract-style painting room, visitors will require an imagination to enjoy it. There is a room of flora and fauna painting with various objects, including raising birds, chickens and various trees, leaves, flowers and roots. Similarly, there is room of young artist and traditional painting. It showcases classic painting, one of which is the style of Kamasan. This room also displays the paintings of the gallery owner, Cokorda Anom Puri Dalem. Tourists can take a rest on the terrace of the traditional house before continuing the journey. Cok Anom who has a knight blood indeed falls in love with traditional art. His works and collections are often admired and purchased by foreign tourists such as those from America, England, Germany and Australia. “The name Semar Kuning is inspired by a puppet story about a man posing the lover of Sang Hyang Tunggal. Ritual paraphernalia like kober (flags) are used as symbols of greatness and have philosophical meaning related to the power of the gods. Thus, it is common to find such objects bineng used in the the Hindu rituals of the Balinese community – especially in temples. The scale of these ritual objects is pursuant to the scale of the ritual being held. The use of flag or kober with the figure of Hanuman is frequently identified as a symbol of strength. Hanuman is a character in the Ramayana epic, often told in the form of a puppet show in Bali. According to mythology, Hanuman is son of Lord Bayu known as Maruti, he is not worshipped as a god. As Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem explains, Hanuman appears in the story Arjuna Pramada or Arjuna Pradalba. When Rama and Laksmana were leading their troops to build a bridge to Lanka, Arjuna came with Krishna. At that time, RamaLaksmana and Krishna-Arjuna shared physical resemblances. Because the scene in this part of the story was crowded with many people the two pairs got mixed up so that Arjuna was with Rama and made the mistkae of saying that he could constuct a brigde from India to Lanka that was more robust than the one that Rama had made with his monkey army. Arjuna was asked to prove his words and he drew his arrow from South India to Lanka in order to crete the bridge. Since Rama was still in doubt about the strength of the bridge, Hanuman in the form of a little monkey tried to walk across the bridge, but as he walked, he grew in size. By the time he arrived to the middle of the bridge, the structure collapsed under his weight. “This story goes beyond the standard patterns of the story that tells of the meeting of the the Ramayana Story with the story of the Mahabharata. Although this story
is classified as the creation of puppeteers, it is said to have been narrated in a palm-leaf manuscript”, explained Prof. Bandem. As the story goes, Arjuna then kept his oath to worship Hanuman for his success. However, Hanuman could not stand to be worshiped by Arjuna so he finally apologized for having dared to dabble with a deity (pramada). With this apology he also promised to help Arjuna when needed. Arjuna took the initiative to make a flag with the figure of Hanuman that also symbolizes Lord Vayu which was then installed on his chariot. From this story was born the tradition of putting up these kober flags at temple. There is also another version of this story , said Dr. I Gusti Made Ngurah, which begins with Arjuna accompanied by Krishna who was send by Yudhishthira to the former kingdom of Lanka to look for a refferences that could for a symbol when carrying out a ritual. On the way, Arjuna and Krishna encountered a little monkey on a bridge. Arjuna was arrogant and insulted the little monkey. The little monkey answered that he was actually Hanuman and challenged Arjuna to try to destroy the bridge. Arjuna failed to meet this challenge. Arjuna was tested several times by the monkey but always failed. Finally the little monkey revealed his identity as Hanuman son of Lord Vayu. Hanuman said that he would respect Arjuna because he is a human but that Arjuna should also respect Hanuman as he is son of Lord Vayu and in this way there would be mutual respect. “Finally, Hanuman requested that Arjuna to create a flag that depicting Hanuman. This flag was then taken everywhere. The flag with the image of Hanuman ths became a symbol of Arjuna honoring Hanuman”, said Prof. Bandem. (kmb)

FRANKFURT - A computer virus wreaked havoc on firms around the globe on Wednesday as it spread to more than 60 countries, disrupting ports from Mumbai to Los Angeles and halting work at a chocolate factory in Australia.
Risk-modeling firm Cyence said economic losses from this week’s attack and one last month from a virus dubbed WannaCry would likely total $8 billion. That estimate highlights the steep tolls businesses around the globe face from growth in cyber attacks that knock critical computer networks offline. “When systems are down and can’t generate revenue, that really gets the attention of executives and board members,” said George Kurtz, chief executive of security software maker CrowdStrike. “This has heightened awareness of the need for resiliency and better security in networks.” The virus, which researchers are calling GoldenEye or Petya, began its spread on Tuesday in Ukraine. It infected machines of visitors to a local news site and computers downloading tainted updates of a popular tax accounting package, according to national police and cyber experts. It shut down a cargo booking system at Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk, causing congestion at some of the 76 ports around the world run by its APM

Maersk said late on Wednesday that the system was back online: “Booking confirmation will take a little longer than usual but we are delighted to carry your cargo,” it said via Twitter. U.S. delivery firm FedEx said its TNT Express division had been significantly affected by the virus, which also wormed its way into South America, affecting ports in Argentina operated by China’s Cofco. The malicious code encrypted data on machines and demanded victims $300 ransoms for recovery, similar to the extortion tactic used in the global WannaCry ransomware attack in May. Security experts said they believed that the goal was to disrupt computer systems across Ukraine, not extortion, saying the attack used powerful wiping software that made it impossible to recover lost data. “It was a wiper disguised as ransomware. They had no intention of obtaining money from the attack,” said Tom Kellermann, chief executive of Strategic Cyber Ventures. Brian Lord, a former official with Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) who is now managing director at private security firm PGI Cyber, said he believed the campaign was an “experiment” in using ransomware to cause destruction. “This starts to look like a state operating through a proxy,” he said. Driver rams his car into Brazil’s presidential residence
SAO PAULO - A driver rammed his car through the gates of Brazil’s presidential residence on Wednesday and was arrested, security forces said, though President Michel Temer was not inside the building. Guards fired warning shots and then opened fire at the vehicle when it refused to stop, before detaining the driver, who appeared to be a minor, the statement said. Temer himself lives in another official residence. The driver was not wounded and the car stopped inside the compound of the Alvorada residence. Transjakarta increases number of buses during Lebaran holiday season
JAKARTA - PT Transportasi Jakarta has increased the number of its buses during this years Lebaran holiday season. “All officers have been urged to be alert in serving all passengers,” President Director of PT Transjakarta Budi Kaliwono stated here on Wednesday evening. He said that 45 buses will be operated on Corridor I (Blok M-Kota) from Monday (June 26) to Sunday (July 2). Some 35 buses had earlier been operated on Corridor I. “Some 26 buses will be operated on Corridor 5 (Kampung MelayuAncol) and 32 buses on Corridor 6 (Ragunan-Dukuh atas),” he noted. Earlier, 19 buses were operated on Corridor 5 and 25 buses on Corridor 6. The increase in the number of Transjakarta buses was intended to meet the needs of the community,
particularly of people who want to go to tourist attractions in an attempt to provide safe, convenient, and affordable means of transportation, he remarked. Meanwhile, he also allocated reserve buses to anticipate an increase in the number of passengers who headed to tourist attractions during the Lebaran holiday season. “We also provide access to people who want to visit the Jakarta Fair Kemayoran, starting from June 8 until July 16, 2017,” Kaliwono stated. LONDON - Ferrari’s Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel risks further sanctions after the governing body re-examines his ‘road rage’ clash with Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton in Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said on Wednesday that it would take another look at the evidence on Monday. “The FIA will further examine the causes of the incident in order to evaluate whether further action is necessary,” it announced in a statement. The outcome of that process will be made public before the Austrian Grand Prix weekend of July 7-9. Race stewards imposed a 10 second stop and go penalty on Vettel after he hit the back of race leader Hamilton’s car and then angrily pulled alongside and banged wheels while both were behind the safety car. They ruled, after an examination of the video evidence, that Vettel had steered into Hamilton in a “potentially dangerous” manoeuvre. Some commentators felt the German had got off lightly, with Vettel ultimately finishing fourth and extending his overall lead to 14 points. Hamilton, who had led comfortably from pole position, finished fifth after having to pit when his headrest material came loose and was angry afterwards. “For him to pretty much get away with driving into another driver is a disgrace,” Hamilton told reporters. “I think he disgraced himself today. Vettel accused Hamilton of ‘brake testing’ him by suddenly slowing coming out of Turn 16 as the safety car prepared to return to the pits. The FIA said on Sunday, however, that the data showed the Briton had “maintained a consistent speed and behaved in the same manner on that occasion as in all the other re-starts during the race”. The incident has been the talk of Formula One, with considerable debate on the severity of the punishment and fans divided. “I think the stewards got it right; I wouldn’t have disqualified him or banned him from the next race unless he took Hamilton out of Baku,” said former racer and Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle. Others disagreed and highlighted FIA president Jean Todt’s road safety campaign and Vettel’s past history of losing his cool under pressure. Last October the German escaped sanction after apologising to race director Charlie Whiting for aiming an expletive-laden Mexican Grand Prix rant at him over the radio. Todt decided then, “on an exceptional basis”, to take no disciplinary action against the four-times world champion but the FIA made clear any recurrence would trigger a summons to its International Tribunal. There is a different side to Lionel Messi, one that not everyone gets to see. The player who shines with the ball by his feet appears to be extremely shy off the field. But the timidlooking Argentina star, who for years has been attracting the world’s attention because of his mind-boggling soccer skills, is an outgoing, cheerful and humorous character when he is among those he knows and trusts. It’s the lighthearted and extroverted version of Messi that will be the center of attention on Friday in his hometown of Rosario when he marries 29-year-old Antonela Roccuzzo, his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two children. The wedding is a highly anticipated event in the central Argentine city, located about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of the capital of Buenos Aires, although the public is not expected to have any access to the festivities. About 250 guests, including some current and former teammates, are expected to attend the ceremony in a fivestar hotel that overlooks the city’s largest shantytown. Special security measures are expected to be in place as guests begin arriving for the event. Among those expected to attend are Barcelona teammates Neymar, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique. Colombian singer Shakira, Pique’s wife, is also expected at the ceremony. Organizers said personal hairdressers will be available for the guests, along with entertainment services for their children. About 150 journalists will be allowed to cover the wedding under very strict rules, without any direct access to the ceremony or the party.

The soft-spoken Messi rarely speaks publicly and almost never talks to the media after or before games. Only a few times he has shown up at news conferences during tournaments with his club or national team. Messi moved to Barcelona when he was 13 after being diagnosed with a hormone disorder that affected his growth. Barcelona offered to help him with the treatment. The entire family initially moved with him, but Messi’s mother and two siblings soon returned to Argentina. Messi stayed in Spain with his father, but he couldn’t play at first because he didn’t have the proper documentation. “One day I asked him, ‘What do you want to do? Because in the end, the decision is yours,’” his father, Jorge, said in a television documentary about Messi’s life. “And he told me, ‘I want to stay. FIFA publishes Garcia report on 2018-2022 World Cup bidding
SOCHI — After years of intrigue about allegedly corrupt World Cup bidding, FIFA published an investigation report Tuesday that showed how voters exploited the murky system yet allowed Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. FIFA published investigator Michael Garcia’s 430page dossier less than 24 hours after Germany’s biggest-selling daily Bild began reporting extracts from a leaked copy it received. The full report verified the broad conclusions of a summary of Garcia’s work published by FIFA in November 2014. A Russia bid backed by Vladimir Putin gave limited cooperation to Garcia’s team which found no evidence of undue influence. Putin met six of 22 FIFA voters before the December 2010 elections. Qatar’s ultimate victory over the United States tested FIFA’s bid rules to the limit. The bid team used a full range of lavishly funded state and sports agencies, plus advisers who raised Garcia’s suspicions. Garcia’s report was once a holy grail for FIFA critics who hoped it would be explosive and force a rerun of the World Cup hosting votes. Many believed Russian and Qatari bids must have behaved badly to persuade a FIFA executive committee lineup in 2010 that has since been widely discredited. “Bid teams operated in an environment where a number of (voters) did not
hesitate to exploit a system that in certain respects did not bind them to the same rules applicable to bid teams,” Garcia wrote, noting that some FIFA officials “sought to obtain personal favors or benefits.” Some of those same FIFA officials have since been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in a widespread racketeering case that is ongoing. Garcia’s team did not have the evidence-gathering powers of a criminal probe and it was clear they would be hampered even before starting a globe-trotting 2013-14 investigation. His full report detailed how: FIFA voters refused to be interviewed; bid teams such as Russia and Spain were evasive; potential key witnesses could not be tracked down. Garcia’s work also has been overtaken since he delivered it to FIFA’s then ethics judge in September 2014. A 42-page summary written by German judge Hans Joachim Eckert was published two months later and disputed by Garcia. Their public falling out prompted FIFA to pass the dossier and supporting evidence to Switzerland’s attorney general for review. The true significance of Garcia might only be seen once Swiss authorities have completed their work. It started with suspected money laundering linked to the World Cup bids and extended to other areas of FIFA business. (ap)

There is a different side to Lionel Messi, one that not everyone gets to see. The player who shines with the ball by his feet appears to be extremely shy off the field. But the timidlooking Argentina star, who for years has been attracting the world’s attention because of his mind-boggling soccer skills, is an outgoing, cheerful and humorous character when he is among those he knows and trusts. It’s the lighthearted and extroverted version of Messi that will be the center of attention on Friday in his hometown of Rosario when he marries 29-year-old Antonela Roccuzzo, his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two children. The wedding is a highly anticipated event in the central Argentine city, located about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of the capital of Buenos Aires, although the public is not expected to have any access to the festivities. About 250 guests, including some current and former teammates, are expected to attend the ceremony in a fivestar hotel that overlooks the city’s largest shantytown. Special security measures are expected to be in place as guests begin arriving for the event. Among those expected to attend are Barcelona teammates Neymar, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique. Colombian singer Shakira, Pique’s wife, is also expected at the ceremony. Organizers said personal hairdressers will be available for the guests, along with entertainment services for their children. About 150 journalists will be allowed to cover the wedding under very strict rules, without any direct access to the ceremony or the party.

Only a few times he has shown up at news conferences during tournaments with his club or national team. Messi moved to Barcelona when he was 13 after being diagnosed with a hormone disorder that affected his growth. Barcelona offered to help him with the treatment. The entire family initially moved with him, but Messi’s mother and two siblings soon returned to Argentina. Messi stayed in Spain with his father, but he couldn’t play at first because he didn’t have the proper documentation. “One day I asked him, ‘What do you want to do? Because in the end, the decision is yours,’” his father, Jorge, said in a television documentary about Messi’s life. “And he told me, ‘I want to stay. FIFA publishes Garcia report on 2018-2022 World Cup bidding
SOCHI — After years of intrigue about allegedly corrupt World Cup bidding, FIFA published an investigation report Tuesday that showed how voters exploited the murky system yet allowed Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. FIFA published investigator Michael Garcia’s 430page dossier less than 24 hours after Germany’s biggest-selling daily Bild began reporting extracts from a leaked copy it received. The full report verified the broad conclusions of a summary of Garcia’s work published by FIFA in November 2014. A Russia bid backed by Vladimir Putin gave limited cooperation to Garcia’s team which found no evidence of undue influence. Putin met six of 22 FIFA voters before the December 2010 elections. Qatar’s ultimate victory over the United States tested FIFA’s bid rules to the limit. The bid team used a full range of lavishly funded state and sports agencies, plus advisers who raised Garcia’s suspicions. Garcia’s report was once a holy grail for FIFA critics who hoped it would be explosive and force a rerun of the World Cup hosting votes. Many believed Russian and Qatari bids must have behaved badly to persuade a FIFA executive committee lineup in 2010 that has since been widely discredited. “Bid teams operated in an environment where a number of (voters) did not
hesitate to exploit a system that in certain respects did not bind them to the same rules applicable to bid teams,” Garcia wrote, noting that some FIFA officials “sought to obtain personal favors or benefits.” Some of those same FIFA officials have since been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in a widespread racketeering case that is ongoing. Garcia’s team did not have the evidence-gathering powers of a criminal probe and it was clear they would be hampered even before starting a globe-trotting 2013-14 investigation. His full report detailed how: FIFA voters refused to be interviewed; bid teams such as Russia and Spain were evasive; potential key witnesses could not be tracked down. Garcia’s work also has been overtaken since he delivered it to FIFA’s then ethics judge in September 2014. A 42-page summary written by German judge Hans Joachim Eckert was published two months later and disputed by Garcia. Their public falling out prompted FIFA to pass the dossier and supporting evidence to Switzerland’s attorney general for review. The true significance of Garcia might only be seen once Swiss authorities have completed their work. It started with suspected money laundering linked to the World Cup bids and extended to other areas of FIFA business. (ap)

LONDON - Ferrari’s Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel risks further sanctions after the governing body re-examines his ‘road rage’ clash with Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton in Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said on Wednesday that it would take another look at the evidence on Monday. “The FIA will further examine the causes of the incident in order to evaluate whether further action is necessary,” it announced in a statement. The outcome of that process will be made public before the Austrian Grand Prix weekend of July 7-9. Race stewards imposed a 10 second stop and go penalty on Vettel after he hit the back of race leader Hamilton’s car and then angrily pulled alongside and banged wheels while both were behind the safety car. They ruled, after an examination of the video evidence, that Vettel had steered into Hamilton in a “potentially dangerous” manoeuvre. Some commentators felt the German had got off lightly, with Vettel ultimately finishing fourth and extending his overall lead to 14 points. Hamilton, who had led comfortably from pole position, finished fifth after having to pit when his headrest material came loose and was angry afterwards. “For him to pretty much get away with driving into another driver is a disgrace,” Hamilton told reporters. “I think he disgraced himself today. Vettel accused Hamilton of ‘brake testing’ him by suddenly slowing coming out of Turn 16 as the safety car prepared to return to the pits. The FIA said on Sunday, however, that the data showed the Briton had “maintained a consistent speed and behaved in the same manner on that occasion as in all the other re-starts during the race”. The incident has been the talk of Formula One, with considerable debate on the severity of the punishment and fans divided. “I think the stewards got it right; I wouldn’t have disqualified him or banned him from the next race unless he took Hamilton out of Baku,” said former racer and Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle. Others disagreed and highlighted FIA president Jean Todt’s road safety campaign and Vettel’s past history of losing his cool under pressure. Last October the German escaped sanction after apologising to race director Charlie Whiting for aiming an expletive-laden Mexican Grand Prix rant at him over the radio. Todt decided then, “on an exceptional basis”, to take no disciplinary action against the four-times world champion but the FIA made clear any recurrence would trigger a summons to its International Tribunal. New computer virus spreads from Ukraine to disrupt world business
FRANKFURT - A computer virus wreaked havoc on firms around the globe on Wednesday as it spread to more than 60 countries, disrupting ports from Mumbai to Los Angeles and halting work at a chocolate factory in Australia.
Risk-modeling firm Cyence said economic losses from this week’s attack and one last month from a virus dubbed WannaCry would likely total $8 billion. That estimate highlights the steep tolls businesses around the globe face from growth in cyber attacks that knock critical computer networks offline. “When systems are down and can’t generate revenue, that really gets the attention of executives and board members,” said George Kurtz, chief executive of security software maker CrowdStrike. “This has heightened awareness of the need for resiliency and better security in networks.” The virus, which researchers are calling GoldenEye or Petya, began its spread on Tuesday in Ukraine. It infected machines of visitors to a local news site and computers downloading tainted updates of a popular tax accounting package, according to national police and cyber experts. It shut down a cargo booking system at Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk, causing congestion at some of the 76 ports around the world run by its APM

Maersk said late on Wednesday that the system was back online: “Booking confirmation will take a little longer than usual but we are delighted to carry your cargo,” it said via Twitter. The malicious code encrypted data on machines and demanded victims $300 ransoms for recovery, similar to the extortion tactic used in the global WannaCry ransomware attack in May. SAO PAULO - A driver rammed his car through the gates of Brazil’s presidential residence on Wednesday and was arrested, security forces said, though President Michel Temer was not inside the building. Guards fired warning shots and then opened fire at the vehicle when it refused to stop, before detaining the driver, who appeared to be a minor, the statement said. Temer himself lives in another official residence. The driver was not wounded and the car stopped inside the compound of the Alvorada residence. Transjakarta increases number of buses during Lebaran holiday season
JAKARTA - PT Transportasi Jakarta has increased the number of its buses during this years Lebaran holiday season. “All officers have been urged to be alert in serving all passengers,” President Director of PT Transjakarta Budi Kaliwono stated here on Wednesday evening. He said that 45 buses will be operated on Corridor I (Blok M-Kota) from Monday (June 26) to Sunday (July 2). Some 35 buses had earlier been operated on Corridor I. “Some 26 buses will be operated on Corridor 5 (Kampung MelayuAncol) and 32 buses on Corridor 6 (Ragunan-Dukuh atas),” he noted. Earlier, 19 buses were operated on Corridor 5 and 25 buses on Corridor 6. The increase in the number of Transjakarta buses was intended to meet the needs of the community,
particularly of people who want to go to tourist attractions in an attempt to provide safe, convenient, and affordable means of transportation, he remarked. Meanwhile, he also allocated reserve buses to anticipate an increase in the number of passengers who headed to tourist attractions during the Lebaran holiday season. “We also provide access to people who want to visit the Jakarta Fair Kemayoran, starting from June 8 until July 16, 2017,” Kaliwono stated. He revealed that buses will ply on several routes, including the Monas-Jakarta Fair, PGC-Jakarta Fair, Pulogadung-Jakarta Fair, and Kampung Melayu-Jakarta Fair. JAKARTA - From white water rafting in Bali to visiting temples on Java, former U.S. President Barack Obama’s private family holiday is being closely tracked in Indonesia where he spent four years as a child. Obama was six when he moved to Jakarta after his American mother, Ann Dunham, married an Indonesian man following the end of her marriage to Obama’s Kenyan father. “I feel proud that my friend became a president,” said Sonni Gondokusumo, 56, a former classmate of Obama at the Menteng 01 state elementary school in Jakarta. Gondokusumo showed a class photograph of himself standing behind a young Obama, who was wearing a school beret. “He was a clever boy. Whenever a teacher asked him to solve a problem in front of the class, he could do it,” Gondokusomo told Reuters, adding he hoped to meet the former president again. Obama remains popular in the world’s most popu-
lous Muslim nation and his trip has been splashed across the media during an extended public holiday to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. The Rakyat Merdeka newspaper carried a headline “Obama loves Indonesia”. Obama returned for an official visit as president in 2010 with his wife, Michelle, but this time has brought daughters Malia and Sasha as well. Indonesians are avid social media users and snaps of the former U.S. president walking with his family in rice fields and rafting on Bali’s Ayung River have gone viral. Obama kicked off the holiday on the island of Bali, where he stayed at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Bali near the cultural centre of Ubud. On Wednesday, Obama and him family arrived in the city of Yogyakarta on Java island, and visited the ancient temple of Borobudur. According to CNN Indonesia, Central Java police deployed 700 officers to secure his visit to Borobudur, a Buddhist temple dating from the 8th and 9th centuries. An office phone over which a woman learned that her bankrupt boss had killed himself. “I experienced it but wasn’t severely affected because I was still in school,” said Taweesak Woraritruengaurai, the exhibition’s curator. “But when I got to see all these things that are full of stories, I could feel how real it was and how much it affected many aspects of life. It affected people very deeply.”
Today, Thailand’s banking and finance sector seems more secure. Experts say crucial lessons were learned in 1997. The chances of a rerun, they say, are slim. When the global crisis struck a decade later, Asia’s financial systems were relatively insulated, with less direct exposure to the toxic subprime mortgages that wreaked havoc on U.S. and European markets. “I don’t think there will be another financial crisis,” said economics professor Apichart Satitniramai of Thammasat University. “Firstly, there’s a high capital adequacy ratio, which can support more risk,” he said, referring to the reserves banks must keep to deal with possible crises. “Secondly, banks and financial institutions have changed their behavior drastically, compared to the time before the financial crisis occurred,” Apichart said. Thailand and other Asian countries also have bulked up their foreign currency reserves, a key
buffer for a country facing economic turmoil because they can be used to defend its currency, provide liquidity and generally shore up financial systems. Not everyone has moved on. In 1997, Sirivat Voravetvuthikun was a successful stock trader, so adept at picking the right stocks that other traders called him “the Phantom.” After he went bust he began selling sandwiches from a yellow foam box hanging from his neck. He became famous as a symbol of determination and hope. Today, he’s still doing it. His attempts to grow his food business have failed, leaving him stuck where he landed in 1997. But his will to pull through burns as bright as ever. He says, “I am telling myself and others in society, even though the Thai economy is not good, if we keep fighting, cut our costs, do whatever we can, work hard to earn as much as we can, we’ll survive and one day the economy will get better.”(rtr)
A Unique Tourist Attraction Merging Art and Culture
Saren Kelod Semar Kuning Palace, Ubud, is not too different from other palaces in the tourism village area. It is located at Kertawangsa hamlet, Lodtunduh, Ubud, Gianyar, or about 22 km from Denpasar. Its cultural and art activities always go hand in hand. So, do not be surprised if every day hundreds of tourists from various countries make a visit to the palace. The most prominent activities are majejahitan (preparing oblation), rituals and customary activities of ancient royal descendants. Saren Kelod is a main family of Lodtunduh Grand Palace, Ubud. This palace still preserves its noble traditions. One of them is keeping the legacy of kiwa tengan and usadha (healing) palm-leaf manuscript and kris dagger named Ki Bintang Kukus and Ki Karang Suwung. “This palace is a part of Lodtunduh Grand Palace built around 1818,” said Cok Anom. In the past, this palace is very ancient because the wall is made of patching soil. However, the building was then refurbished by still putting forward traditional ornaments that refer to the Balinese geomancy or Kosala-Kosali concept. “I used to be an artist who made sculptures and
paintings. All the works we preserve by making a studio or gallery to display all the paintings belonging to various styles,” he added. The gallery is named Semar Kuning I Artist Cooperative Painting. If only seen from the highway, it will look like a palace because people will only see a magnificent palace filled with traditional ornaments. This gallery displays Cok Anom’s paintings and the works of other artists in Bali. Although the gallery is prepared for foreign tourists, local people are also allowed to see it. “We prepare a tourist attraction, so that all permits should have been met properly,” he said. Collection of the paintings presents a variety of themes with various sizes that can certainly provide inspiration for those who see it. When entering the lobby, visitors will see people painting. Approximately seven artists are making a demonstration of painting. They also teach children to make sketches or paint as well as give color according to the theme. “Surely, the action of the artists becomes an attraction as well,” he said. Each room has a different style of
painting. For example, in the room of modern-style painting there are paintings of various styles such as realists and naturalists. The size also varies from the smallest measuring 40 cm x 60 cm and the largest can reach to 2 meters x 3 meters. Similarly, in the room of abstract-style painting room, visitors will require an imagination to enjoy it. There is a room of flora and fauna painting with various objects, including raising birds, chickens and various trees, leaves, flowers and roots. Similarly, there is room of young artist and traditional painting. It showcases classic painting, one of which is the style of Kamasan. This room also displays the paintings of the gallery owner, Cokorda Anom Puri Dalem. Tourists can take a rest on the terrace of the traditional house before continuing the journey. Cok Anom who has a knight blood indeed falls in love with traditional art. His works and collections are often admired and purchased by foreign tourists such as those from America, England, Germany and Australia. “The name Semar Kuning is inspired by a puppet story about a man posing the lover of Sang Hyang Tunggal. Ritual paraphernalia like kober (flags) are used as symbols of greatness and have philosophical meaning related to the power of the gods. Thus, it is common to find such objects bineng used in the the Hindu rituals of the Balinese community – especially in temples. The scale of these ritual objects is pursuant to the scale of the ritual being held. The use of flag or kober with the figure of Hanuman is frequently identified as a symbol of strength. Hanuman is a character in the Ramayana epic, often told in the form of a puppet show in Bali. According to mythology, Hanuman is son of Lord Bayu known as Maruti, he is not worshipped as a god. As Prof. Dr. I Made Bandem explains, Hanuman appears in the story Arjuna Pramada or Arjuna Pradalba. When Rama and Laksmana were leading their troops to build a bridge to Lanka, Arjuna came with Krishna. At that time, RamaLaksmana and Krishna-Arjuna shared physical resemblances. Because the scene in this part of the story was crowded with many people the two pairs got mixed up so that Arjuna was with Rama and made the mistkae of saying that he could constuct a brigde from India to Lanka that was more robust than the one that Rama had made with his monkey army. Arjuna was asked to prove his words and he drew his arrow from South India to Lanka in order to crete the bridge. Since Rama was still in doubt about the strength of the bridge, Hanuman in the form of a little monkey tried to walk across the bridge, but as he walked, he grew in size. By the time he arrived to the middle of the bridge, the structure collapsed under his weight. “This story goes beyond the standard patterns of the story that tells of the meeting of the the Ramayana Story with the story of the Mahabharata. Although this story
is classified as the creation of puppeteers, it is said to have been narrated in a palm-leaf manuscript”, explained Prof. Bandem. As the story goes, Arjuna then kept his oath to worship Hanuman for his success. However, Hanuman could not stand to be worshiped by Arjuna so he finally apologized for having dared to dabble with a deity (pramada). With this apology he also promised to help Arjuna when needed. Arjuna took the initiative to make a flag with the figure of Hanuman that also symbolizes Lord Vayu which was then installed on his chariot. From this story was born the tradition of putting up these kober flags at temple. There is also another version of this story , said Dr. I Gusti Made Ngurah, which begins with Arjuna accompanied by Krishna who was send by Yudhishthira to the former kingdom of Lanka to look for a refferences that could for a symbol when carrying out a ritual. On the way, Arjuna and Krishna encountered a little monkey on a bridge. Arjuna was arrogant and insulted the little monkey. The little monkey answered that he was actually Hanuman and challenged Arjuna to try to destroy the bridge. Arjuna failed to meet this challenge. Arjuna was tested several times by the monkey but always failed. Finally the little monkey revealed his identity as Hanuman son of Lord Vayu. Hanuman said that he would respect Arjuna because he is a human but that Arjuna should also respect Hanuman as he is son of Lord Vayu and in this way there would be mutual respect. “Finally, Hanuman requested that Arjuna to create a flag that depicting Hanuman. This flag was then taken everywhere. The flag with the image of Hanuman ths became a symbol of Arjuna honoring Hanuman”, said Prof. Bandem. (kmb)

SINGARAJA — Tejakula village or district has long been famous as a salt producer area. However, since several years ago, the number of farmers has decreased. One of the reasons is due to the prospects considered to be less promising. One of the salt farmers, Wayan Supartini, 45, said the production of flavored kitchen salt remains to be cultivated by a number of people. However, when compared to the period before 2010, farmers are currently very few. “In the past, their number reached tens of people. Along the beach from the west to the east, there are many places used for salt farming. Now, there are about 10 locations left,” he said on Wednesday (Jun. 28). Decrease in the amount, continued this fatplated woman, happens because the results considered no longer promising. Each cultivated land can only produce around 10 kg of salt per two days and the selling price remains stagnant at IDR 7,000 per kg. “The result is considered quite small,” he explained. The condition also happens due to the recent weather frequently raining so that disrupts the process of salting in addition to land conversion. “A lot of land for salt farming has been sold because people need money,” he said. In the meantime, especially for her, producing salt is only used as an odd job, helping her husband earn income as a fisherman. “This is only for a side job. Papal adviser Pell denies sexual abuse charges, will return to Australia

SYDNEY - Cardinal George Pell, a top adviser to Pope Francis, said on Thursday he was innocent of charges of sexual abuse in his native Australia, and that the pontiff had given him leave of absence to return there to defend himself.

“I am looking forward finally to having my day in court. I repeat that I am innocent of these charges. They are false,” Pell, 76, told a hastily called news conference, hours after Australian police charged him with multiple historical sex crimes. The Vatican spokesman, Greg Burke, said that, while the Holy See had respect for the Australian justice system, it noted that Pell had cooperated with investigations in the past. Pell, the Vatican’s financial controller since 2014, is the highest-ranking Church official to be charged with sexual abuse. Police in the Australian state of Victoria, where Pell was a country priest in the 1970s, said he faced “multiple charges in respect of historic sexual offences” from multiple complainants. They did not detail the charges against Pell or specify the ages of the alleged victims or the period when the crimes were alleged to

New tour packages offering visits to the coral gardens and excursions to see the wild dolphins have been very popular with children and adults alike. These new tour packages created by Baktisegara Villages’s Sari Segara fishermen group have proven to be a success. From morning until late afternoon, crowds of visitors were eagerly awaiting the chance to see the coral or dolphins. Using motorboats, fishermen charge a flat fee of IDR 60,000 per person per hour to see the marine mammals in their natural habitat. The fishermen group has been cooperating with
tour operators from other parts of Bali for the dolphin tours. Visitors can also see the lovely marine garden from boats or by renting snorkeling gear for IDR 10,000. This newly introduced and very affordable service easily satisfies visitors. One fisherman named Kadek Agus, said on Tuesday (Jun. 27) that visitors really enjoy the view of the coral gardens and dolphin attraction at Penimbangan Beach. The coral gardens, he explained had been severly damaged but were rehabilitated. Because the water here is clean and clear, visitors can enjoy a great view of the coral from boats but they also welcome to get into the water with snorkeling gear to capture underwater pictures. “We also offer educational tours for youngsters so that
they can learn more about marine biota. Children really enjoy the underwater panaorama that they can comfortably view form a baot” he explained. Local fishermen, continued Kadek Agus have also been engaged in protected turtle eggs that are often hatched on Penimbangan Beach. Even though they do not yet have a turtle breeding facility, they are often asked to provide educational tours for children about the turtles. The breeding cages provided by generous benefactors are not enough so the fisherman’s group eagerly awaits government assistance so that they can create small enclosures for the eggs to hatch in safety. “We often host educational tours but the ‘cages’ that we have been able to make are not very good. If we can improve these facilities, we believe that visitors –especially children, will be increasingly pleased with their experience”, he explained. (kmb38)

Last July, Victoria police confirmed that Pell himself was being investigated on suspicion of child sexual abuse. After the justice system speaks, I will speak.”
But the latest development puts pressure on the pope to make good on promises finally to root out sexual abuse in the Church and act against those who cover it up. Marie Collins, the top non-clerical member of a papal commission on abuse, resigned in frustration this year, citing “shameful” resistance to change within the Vatican. Church sexual abuse broke into the open in 2002, when it was discovered that U.S. bishops in the Boston area had simply moved abusers to new posts instead of defrocking them. Thousands of cases have come to light around the world as investigations have encouraged long-silent victims to go public, shattering the Church’s standing in places such as Ireland, and tens of millions of dollars have been paid in compensation. “I would suspect (the charges against Pell) are going to be stunning to the Vatican and to the pope himself,” said Thomas P. HONG KONG - Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday China would work to ensure a “far-reaching future” for Hong Kong’s autonomy, but he faces a divided city with protesters angered by Beijing’s perceived interference as it marks 20 years of Chinese rule. Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997, under a “one country, two systems” formula which guarantees wide-ranging freedoms and judicial independence unseen in mainland China. Beijing has promised Hong Kong’s capitalist system will remain unchanged for “at least” 50 years until 2047, but it has not clarified what happens after that. “Hong Kong has always tugged at my heartstrings,” Xi said on arrival at Hong Kong airport for the handover anniversary in front of flag-waving crowds at the start of a three-day visit. “... We are willing, together with different sectors of Hong Kong society, to look back on Hong Kong’s unusual course in the past 20 years, draw conclusions from the experience, look into the future and to ensure ‘one country, two systems’ is stable and has a far-reaching future.” Xi’s message was consistent with those of other senior Chinese leaders visiting Hong Kong in the past, that Beijing would safeguard the city’s development, prosperity and people’s livelihoods. In reality, however, fears of the creeping influence of Communist Party leaders in Beijing have been starkly exposed in recent years by the abduction by mainland agents of some Hong Kong booksellers who specialised in politically sensitive material and Beijing’s efforts in disqualifying two pro-independence lawmakers elected to the city legislature. Xi did not respond to journalists, including one who asked whether Liu Xiaobo, China’s Nobel Peace Laureate and jailed dissident, would be released and allowed to travel overseas to be treated for cancer. Speaking later, Xi praised Hong Kong’s outgoing leader, Leung Chun-ying, who cracked down hard on pro-democracy Occupy protests in 2014, for his substantial contributions to the country, “especially safeguarding national security”. “These past five years have not been easy at all,” Xi added. Making Ivanka Trump shoes: Long hours, low pay and abuse
GANZHOU — A worker with blood dripping from his head marked a low point in the tense, grinding life at a southeastern China factory used by Ivanka Trump and other fashion brands. An angry manager had hit him with the sharp end of a highheeled shoe. Workers from the factory, including one current and two former employees who spoke to The Associated Press, reported overtime that stretched past midnight, steep production quotas and crude verbal abuse at Ganzhou Huajian International Shoe City Co. They said beatings were not unheard of, but the shoe attack, which all three say they witnessed last year, was violent enough to stand out. “He was bleeding right from the middle of the head,” the current worker said. “There was a lot of blood. He went to the factory’s nurse station, passing by me,” said a second man, who said he quit his job at Huajian because of the long hours and low pay. The three workers are the first people with direct knowledge of conditions at the Ganzhou factory to speak with the media. All three spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, for fear of retribution or arrest. Last month, three men investigating conditions at the Huajian Group factory in Ganzhou were detained, accused of illegally using secret recording devices to steal commercial secrets. They, like one of the three men AP spoke with, worked with China Labor Watch, a New York group that has been investigating Ivanka Trump’s Chinese suppliers for more than a year. The group said the men were released on bail Wednesday, the final day of their legally mandated 30-day detention period limit. Li Qiang, founder of China Labor Watch, describes Huajian’s Ganzhou factory as among the worst he has seen in nearly two decades investi-
gating labor abuses. His group says pay can be as low as a dollar an hour, in violation of China’s labor laws. According to China Labor Watch investigators, until recently, workers might get only two days off — or less — per month. China Labor Watch said the company forced workers to sign fake pay stubs with inflated salary amounts and threatened to fire workers if they didn’t fill in questionnaires about working conditions with preapproved answers. Workers also said the company pressured people not to speak with outsiders about conditions at the factory. In comments to the AP, the Huajian Group declined to respond to specific questions, but broadly denied all allegations, calling them “completely not true to the facts, taken out of context, exaggerated.”
The company said it operates lawfully and that China Labor Watch “invented so-called ‘facts’ by illegal means of buying undercover work, which has already affected the enterprise’s normal business seriously and affected the survival and employment of tens of thousands of staff.” The company noted its significant contribution to the economy and to society, par-
ticularly through its employment of disabled people. Before taking on an official role as adviser to her father, Ivanka Trump stepped back from day-to-day management of her brand, but she has retained her ownership interest. In Washington on Tuesday, she spoke at a ceremony unveiling the annual U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report, in which China was demoted to the lowest ranking over its human trafficking record. She said the report is “clarion call into action in defense of the vulnerable and the exploited.” She has not commented, however, on the detentions or the reports of poor working conditions at one of her brand’s suppliers. Her spokeswoman declined to comment for this story. Abigail Klem, president of the
Ivanka Trump brand, said “the integrity of our supply chain is a top priority and we take all allegations very seriously.” The company says its products have not been made in the factory since March, but China Labor Watch said it had an April production schedule indicating that nearly 1,000 pairs of Ivanka Trump shoes were due in May. In the past, some brands have used China Labor Watch’s reports as a tool to help keep their supply chains clean. Walt Disney Co., for example, investigated and ultimately decided to sever its relationship with at least one supplier following reports of poor conditions, and sought to improve labor practices at others. China Labor Watch outlined its findings in letters sent in June to Ivanka Trump at the White House and to other brands. So far, the group says it has gotten no response. The group said it also sent Ivanka Trump a video taken inside the factory in May. That video included a clip in which a manager threatened to rough up a worker who had ap-
parently arranged shoes in the wrong order. “If I see them f---ing messed up again,” the manager yells, “I’ll beat you right here.” The video has not been released to the public, but it was shown to AP at China Labor Watch’s office in New York. Marc Fisher, which has made shoes for Ivanka Trump and Easy Spirit at the Ganzhou factory, has said it would look into the allegations. He said he’s heard President Trump talk about bringing jobs back to America, but he doubts that will happen with shoes. Candidasa thronged by visitors, merchants look happy AMLAPURA — Since the beginning of the Eid alFitr holiday, Karangasem’s touristic area of Candidasa has been crowded with tourists. Peak density occurred on Monday (Jun. 26), but on Tuesday (Jun. 27) the area was still crowded.
“Compared to ordinary days, it is quite crowded. The most crowded day was the second day of the Eid (Monday—Ed),” said a parking attendant hanging out in the area of Batubelah Beach. After having become eroded by abrasion, this beach was repaired several years ago when Karangasem was leadership of Regent Wayan Geredeg. This beach has now become popular with tourists visiting Candidasa.

These visitors not only come to enjoy the scenery of the ocean but also to enjoy tasting local delicacies like meatballs. “ Thankfully it is quite crowded so sales have been good” said one merchant. Sunglass seller, 40 year-old Budi said that he had sold IDR 250,000 worth of merchandise on Tuesday, whereas he usually makes about IDR 70,000 a day. Even though the peak density of visitors had passed, this merchant from Kecicang Islam, Bungaya Kangin village, Bebandem, was still doing well. He explained that about three days ago tourists starting coming to the beach at around 9:00 and that the

New products introduced at BAF
DENPASAR — Many craftsmen take advantage of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) as an opportunity to market their brand and introduce their new products. Putu Sudiadnyani for example is a metallic accessories craftswoman and owner of Bara Silver who has participated in the BAF craft fair several times. She said that she is always optimistic about being able to sell her innovative products at this month long event. “The key is to continue to innovate and to put the customers first”, she said. “The BAF is a showcase for our latest products” she said, adding that they prepare both the products and the marketing of these products long before the BAF event. It is no wonder that Bara Silver won the BAF design competition recently.
At this year’s BAF, she offers Balinese style earrings in various types of metals and designs. Her prices are also very friendly with prices set at IDR 100,000 for Balinese style earings, hair sticks and combs hat are currently her best sellers. She also offers earrings made of silver or gold in different styles and materials that can cost as much as IDR million. Sudiadnyani also uses materials such as alpaca and silver to make brooches, rings and necklaces. When asked about how sales were going this year, she said optimistically : “this year is better than last year”. Jane Chen’s Puja Mask Dance Yearly offering to the spirit of creation
Building on decades of exploration and practice of White Crane Silat, 15th century Javanese sacred chanting, tibetan singing bowl healing, contemporary dance, making essential oils, and a variety of other healing modalities, Jane Chen clearly takes great pleasure in sharing her wealth of experience with other artists and the public alike.
After years of putting together performances that feature talented artists from Bali and other parts of Indonesia in her Bali Onstage shows, Jane decided to create a space where the wealth of Indonesian performing arts could expand into contemporary creations. Saraswati Pavillion, in Canggu is a traditional Javanese ‘gazebo’ and served as the setting for the staging of Jane Chen’s annual Puja Mask Dance this year. The mask she wears in
this dance depicts Sekartaji, a character from the ancient Javanese Panji stories. Jakarta native Jane Chen has been living in Bali for over 30 years and has been performing her Puja Mask Dance once a year since 2003, The essence of this dance is devotional offering and although Jane brings a different aspect of herself to it every year, she always performs it as an offering, to Bali, to her masters, to those who have come before us, to nature, to
Creator. This year, Jane dedicated her dance to her teacher the late Roejito from whom she received the essence of stage presence. The dance, she explained is “a tribute to all those who have touched our lives, to all teachers and masters, to mother nature to our Great Creator and tonite’s Puja Mask Dance is also dedicated to a true artist of life, who touched the lives of many in Bali and inspired many people around the world: the beloved Linda Garland who passed away earlier this year”, explained Jane. The evening’s performances also included a new choreography by Jane Chen, performed by Sefi, entitled ‘The Alphabet of Scent’ in which essential oil scents were an integral part of the choreography. This dance is the first of many to follow and part of a series of four dances that Jane has been performing and elaborating on for some years. The honouring of the endless cycles of birth, death and rebirth was poignantly expressed in an evening that paid homage to the beauty developed over millennial by the people of Indonesia as expressed through their descendants: Jane Chen, dancers Sefi and 8 year old daughter Vio, musicians Barok, Safril and Ajat Lesmana along with light and sound engineer Jonas Sestakresna. Their musical, olfactory and somatic expressions were distinctly contemporary but at the same time clearly rooted in the traditions of this great archipelago that have inspired so many people from all over the world and that came together in a way that gave hope for a better future to all who were present. Australia welcomes charges against alleged Bali bombing mastermind
SYDNEY - Australia welcomed charges against a Guantanamo Bay prisoner accused of masterminding the 2002 Bali bombings in which 202 people were killed, including 88 Australians. Indonesian-born militant Riduan Isamuddin, also known as Hambali, is accused of overseeing the 2002 Bali bombings and an attack on the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003 that killed 12 people. “I hope that should this prosecution succeed, it will bring closure to those devastated by the loss of loved ones, family and friends,” Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told reporters. “It has been a scar on the hearts of all Australians since these attacks occurred
in 2002.” Hambali was charged on seven different counts, including terrorism and murder in violation of the law of war, the Miami Herald reported, citing a charge sheet dated June 20. He is accused of directing three explosions on October 12, 2002, which hit a bar, nightclub and the U.S. Consulate on the Indonesian resort island.Two Islamist suicide bombers detonated explosives at the nightspots packed with tourists, killing 202 people. For Australia, which suffered the most casualties, the Bali bombs were the worst peacetime attack on its citizens, many of whom regard a holiday on sun-drenched Bali as a rite of passage. Seven Americans and 38 Indo-
nesians citizens were also among the dead. Hambali was captured in Bangkok, Thailand in 2003 and has been held in Guantanamo Bay without charge since 2006. The Afghanistan-war veteran dubbed the “Osama bin Laden of Southeast Asia” was seen as the main link between Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) and Al-Qaeda. Bishop said Australia would provide whatever support it could, but did not support the death penalty. “Those responsible for the murder of 202 people, including 88 Australians, should be prosecuted, should receive the severest of punishment and should never be freed,” she said. Halle Berry, Michelle Rodriguez speak out on diversity and Hollywood
LOS ANGELES - Halle Berry, the only black woman to ever win a best actress Oscar, said her 2002 win turned out to be meaningless, and “Fast and Furious” star Michelle Rodriguez warned she may quit the action movie franchise unless filmmakers “show some love for women.”
Their comments proved a reality check for women in Hollywood on Wednesday even as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it invited 298 more women to join its ranks in a bid to improve diversity at the organization behind the Oscars. Berry in 2002 won the best actress Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” becoming the first black woman to do so. Fifteen years on, she remains the only woman of color to get the honor. “Wow, that moment really meant nothing. It meant nothing. I thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing,” she told Teen Vogue editor Elaine Welteroth in a video interview at the Cannes Lion festival released late Tuesday. Berry said she reached that troubling conclusion in
2016 when all 20 of the Oscar acting nominees were white, sparking the #OscarsSoWhite backlash. “I was profoundly hurt by that, and saddened by that,” Berry said, adding that it had prompted her to want to start directing and producing to make more opportunities for actors of color. Elsewhere, Rodriguez, who plays Vin Diesel’s love interest in five of the eight “Fast and Furious” box office hits, suggested she was prepared to quit her role as tough street racer Letty Ortiz over the portrayal of women. “F8 (the 8th film) is out digitally today,” she wrote on her Instagram account on Tuesday above a montage of photos from the film. “I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise,” she continued. It’s not the first time Rodriguez has spoken out. CALIFORNIA - A ranch belonging to “Big Bang Theory” star Johnny Galecki has burned down in a California wildfire but the actor said living in the area was worth it despite the risk of fires. Galecki, 42, who plays nerdy experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter in the hit TV comedy series, was not at home on Monday when the brush fire consumed his ranch in countryside near San Luis Obispo in central California. The fast-moving fire scorched some 1,600 acres (650 hectares)
and forced about 250 people to evacuate their homes. Three structures were destroyed, San Luis Obispo fire officials said on Tuesday. “My heart goes out to all in the area who are also experiencing loss from this vicious fire, the threat of which we live with constantly, which may seem crazy to some but we do so because living in our beautiful, rural area makes it worthwhile,” Galecki said in a statement. “So very relieved no one has
been hurt,” he added. Galecki, who is among the highest-paid stars on television, thanked fire fighters, praised the local community and said that he planned to rebuild. “We’ve done it before and we will need to do it together again, “ he said. Apple Inc’s iPhone turns 10 this week, evoking memories of a rocky start for the device that ended up doing most to start the smartphone revolution and stirring interest in where it will go from here. Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones since June 29, 2007, but the first iPhone, which launched without an App Store and was restricted to the AT&T Inc network, was limited compared to today’s version. After sluggish initial sales, Apple slashed the price to spur holiday sales that year. “The business model for year one of the iPhone was a disaster,” Tony Fadell, one of the Apple developers of the device, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. “We pivoted and figured it out in year two.” The very concept of the iPhone came as a surprise to some of Apple’s suppliers a decade ago, even
