LOS ANGELES - Though she was absent, Beyonce won three BET Awards, including video of the year for “7/11,” while Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj also won multiple awards at the all-star show Sunday night. But the show was less about the awards — video of the year didn’t even make the live broadcast — as performances stole the night. As Janet Jackson entered the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Brown screamed loudly, Minaj whipped out her phone to record the moment and Laverne Cox was teary-eyed. The pop star was honored with the Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award as she made one of her first public performances in sometime as she readies a new album and tour this fall. “It’s been a very long moment to this journey ... my heart is so full,” Jackson said to the audience, which included her mother and father. An impressive Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe paid tribute to the 49-yearold veteran by mimicking her signature dance moves.

“Twenty five years ago we created ‘Rhythm Nation,’ hoping the world would be a better place, but today there’s even more to be done,” Jackson said. Jackson wasn’t the only show stopper Sunday: Diddy dropped it like it’s hot at the awards show — figuratively and literally. Brown performed multiple times, and won best male R&B/pop artist and the fandemonium award. And as Anthony Hamilton and Gary Clark Jr. performed while photos of celebrities who died appeared on screen, a montage of the nine people who were gunned down at a church in Charleston earlier this month closed the performance. “Black-ish” actors Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross won over the crowd with back-to-back jokes, including one about Rachel Dolezal, the former president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP. “Is white really the new black,” Anderson sang as two photos of Dolezal — one old, the other recent — appeared on screen. Anderson also dressed as British singer Sam Smith, who won best new

artist but didn’t attend the awards show. “Sam Smith isn’t here tonight because he’s white and he didn’t think he would win at the BET Awards,” Anderson said as the audience burst into laughter. Rihanna, who debuted a 1-minute clip of her new music video for “B---Better Have My Money,” was among the A-listers who sat in the audience, and she sang along during Omarion and Brown’s performance of the pop hit, “Post to Be.” Alicia Keys surprised the crowd when she joined The Weeknd to sing his hit, “Earned It.” Smokey Robinson received the Lifetime Achievement Award, performed a medley of his hits and earned a standing ovation from the audience when he spoke about Hollywood and humility. Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted 2” opened far under expectations with $32.9 million, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday, ceding the top two spots to holdovers “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out.” While $32.9 million is a solid opening for an R-rated comedy, bigger things were expected from “Ted 2,” which cost a reported $68 million to produce. The Universal Pictures sequel was expected to earn somewhere in the $50 million range going into its debut weekend, thanks to the record-setting precedent of the first film, which earned $54.4 million in 2012. In addition to mediocre reviews, perhaps the initial intrigue around a raunchy stuffed animal has worn off a bit. “It’s hard to maintain that hyper level of excitement once people have seen the talking Teddy bear,” Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “In comedy, it’s about inventiveness, newness and the shock

value of something original.” Universal’s domestic distribution head, Nick Carpou, said that the positive response from exit polls indicates a promising life for the movie in the weeks ahead. “Jurassic World,” also a Universal film, narrowly held the top spot for the third weekend in a row with a mighty $54.2 million, pushing it past the $500 million mark domestically — only the fifth film to do so in history. Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out,” meanwhile, finished at a close No. 2, earning $52.1 million — only a 42 percent drop from its first weekend in theaters. Dergarabedian marveled at the consistency of “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out.” “These are no flash-in-thepan movies. Both are delivering exactly what audiences want,” he said. GIANYAR - Lebih Beach Festival (LBF) is held again this year. The LBF has entered the fifth implementation and lasted for two days namely on Saturday (Jun. 27) and Sunday (Jul. 28). Various activities were held in order to raise the tourism potential of Lebih area. Chairman of the LBF V Committee, Wayan Agus Muliana, revealed that a number of problems and constraints are faced in the LBF implementation this time. However, it can be overcome due to the support of community leaders and government. According to him, a variety of exciting activities graced the LBF V. They included the activities like beach clean-up action, the release of turtle hatchlings, paddle for peace, netting competition, fishing competition, surfing contest, parade of dance and music and photo exhibitions. Interestingly, the paddle

for peace involved the surfers of Lebih village. The action of local surfers coalesced into the community of Lebih Surf Club (LSC) grabbed the attention of visitors to the beach. The moment of LBF moment is vivaciously greeted by the public. Since the first day of the LBF, various activities held on Lebih Beach were always crowded with visitors. They were not only following the activities taking place, but also thronging the area of culinary tourism on the local beach. The gym believed to improve fitness and reduce stress is introduced to elementary and secondary school teachers in Jembrana. Hundreds of elementary school teachers attended the basic level of yoga training at the courtyard of the Bung Karno Cultural Hall, Sunday morning (Jun. 28). The event was also attended and joined by Deputy Regent of Jembrana I Made Kembang Hartawan. One of the participants, Gusti Putu Arsana, 52, admitted to have been quite familiar with the movement of the yoga exercises. According to him, he has got great benefits after participating in the yoga exercises all this time. At his age, the body feels more flexible and bodily aches disappear. During approximately an hour they are taught basic exercise of

the Yoga Surya Namaskara. As the name implies, this exercise is done in the morning so that all the participants can fuse with the world’s largest energy source, namely the sun. Deputy Regent Kembang Hartawan said that yoga has now become a world’s trend and been universal. In metropolis, people are willing to spend much money to learn it. The simple movements of yoga exercise are not only good for physical health but also for controlling the mind and emotions. After getting a basic yoga exercise, teachers are expected to transfer it to their students at schools. So, the reverberations of the yoga gym will not only occur in particular circles. With the presence of the TIC, every traveler making a visit to Bangli will not only know about the beautiful panorama of Mount Batur and Lake Batur, but also the attractions and potential owned by several villages in Bangli. According to Operations Manager of the Abang Erawang tourist attraction, Nengah Suratnata, the TIC in Bangli is actually very important for travelers. From the TIC, travelers making a visit to Bangli will know clearly about the ins and outs of tourist destinations ranging from attractions and potentials owned by Bangli. “Guests coming to Bangli will not only know about Mount Batur and Lake Batur only but also the attractions and potentials possessed by several other villages,” he said when met recently. According to Suratnata, the TIC is appropriate to be established in the region of Kintamani because it has become a famous tourist area in Bangli. Suratnata who has been so far a tourism facilitator of the Ministry of Tourism said that

actually the central government through the Ministry of Tourism has an intention to help establish a TIC in Kintamani, Bangli. Related to this plan, the government of Bangli is only required to provide an area of 20 x 20 meters. “Actually I have submitted this matter to the Bangli Culture and Tourism. I’ve even sent it via email in early June. However, until now there has been no response,” he said. In the meantime, the Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, when asked for his confirmation claimed to have never received information regarding the ministerial plan to help establish a TIC in Bangli as submitted by Suratnata. Adnyana claimed that actually there has been a tourist information center in Bangli. However, the TIC in Bangli remains in same office as the information center of the Batur Volcano Museum. The TIC meant by Adnyana carries complete information about tourist attractions in Kintamani. Celebrate Galungan, Kuningan at InterContinental

JIMBARAN - Intercontinental Bali Resort invites guests and visitors to celebrate the Balinese Hindu festival of Galungan and Kuningan at two cultural evenings with traditional food and dance performances under the stars. If you’re fortunate enough to be in Bali this year between 15th and 25th July, you will see the streets lined with ‘Penjor’ – slender, eight-metre-high, gracefully arching bamboo poles, festooned with colourful flowers, fruit, unhusked rice and palm frond ornamentation. These gorgeous all-natural decorations are displayed in celebration of ‘Galungan,’ the island’s most important festival, which occurs every 210 days, and signifies the victory of Virtue (Dharma) over Evil (Adharma). During this time, the ancestral spirits and Balinese deities descend to Earth to be honoured. The tenth day after Galungan, which is known as ‘Kuningan,’ marks

the end of the festival, and is believed to be the day when the spirits ascend back to heaven. Preparations for the ten-day festival will begin several days in advance when each Balinese family will create and place a penjor outside their gate, which makes the whole neighbourhood look splendid. Much work also goes into the making of lawar, a spicy hash of raw meat, grated coconut, vegetables and pig’s blood, traditionally prepared at the roadside by the men of each village. This year, Wednesday 15th July marks the first day of Galungan, and you will see people dressed in their finest clothes bearing elaborate offerings to their temple of origin. The day after

On Kuningan Day, the final day of the festival, the Balinese will make farewell offerings for the ancestors. The yellow rice is a symbol of gratitude to God for life, joy, wealth, health and prosperity. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Wishing on a shooting star in Japan with man-made meteors

TOKYO - Fancy a meteor shower racing across the night sky to mark your birthday? One Japanese start-up is hoping to deliver shooting stars on demand and choreograph the cosmos. And, say scientists, it’s not just about painting huge pictures on the night-sky that would be visible to millions of people; artificial meteors could help us to understand a lot more about Earth’s atmosphere. Lena Okajima, who holds a doctorate in astronomy, says her company -- ALE -- is intending to launch a micro satellite that can eject shooting stars at exactly the right time and place to put on a celestial show. “I’m thinking of streams of meteors that are rare in nature,” Okajima told AFP in an interview. “It is artificial but I want to make really beautiful ones that can impress viewers,” she said. In collaboration with scientists and engineers at Japanese universities, the ALE team is developing a satellite that will orbit the Earth and eject dozens of balls, a few centimetres (an inch) in diameter, at a time. These balls -- whose chemical formula is a closely-guarded secret -- will race through the atmosphere at around 7-8 kilometres (up to five miles) a second, glowing brightly from the friction created by smashing into the air. Although it sounds fast, that is considerably slower than naturallyoccurring meteors -- chunks of material that either broke away from a planet or never managed to form one in the first place -- which can hurtle through the atmosphere at up to 80 kilometres a second. Tinkering with the ingredients should mean that it is possible to change the colour of each bright streak, says Okajima, offering the

possibility of a multi-coloured flotilla of shooting stars. The stars are expected to shine for several seconds before they are completely burned up -- well before they fall low enough to pose any danger to anything on Earth. “People may eventually become tired of seeing shooting stars if they come alone. But they could be coupled with events on the ground,” Okajima said. “Making the sky a screen is this project’s biggest attraction as entertainment. It’s a space display.”

Tests on the secret formula space pellets carried out with Shinsuke Abe, aerospace engineering associate professor at Nihon University, show they would even burn brightly enough to be seen over the light-polluted metropolis of Tokyo. Unless, of course, it’s cloudy. In many cases, including the eastern U.S. and western Asia in summer, some of these changes have become even more noticeable since 1990, the same period in which Arctic sea ice has gone through a rapid decline, the study found. “There are more of them each

summer and on average they are lasting longer and the longest are lasting longer,” Horton said. That pattern shift is even stronger in the summer in Europe and western Asia, Horton and co-author Noah Diffenbaugh found. The patterns Horton and Diffenbaugh studied are different from the one responsible for the current southeastern U.S. heatwave, Horton said. But the weather patterns were the type responsible for heatwaves that killed more than 50,000 people in western Russia in

2010 and more than 70,000 people Europe in 2003, the study said. In winter, weather pattern shifts have occurred that made extremely cold snaps in central Asia even worse, Horton said. But the study also found an increase in the weather patterns associated with weaker extreme cold snaps in western Asian winters. Diffenbaugh said the changes could be a result of random chance, or a side effect of climate change and melting sea ice as others have theorized. (ap)

Dozens of dogs vaccinated, hundreds eliminated GIANYAR - The outbreak of rabies becomes a concern of the government of Gianyar. The Gianyar Livestock Agency has been deployed on a regular basis. From April to June 2015, the findings have detected ten positive cases of canine rabies scattered throughout the Gianyar region. Anticipative measures have been made by vaccinating up to tens of thousands of dogs and eliminating hundreds of dogs. Coordinator of the Rabies Mitigation Officers of the Gianyar Livestock Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Dibia Presasta, said that early detection effort continues to be made by the Gianyar Livestock Agency against some positive cases of canine rabies. As the result, the data collected from April to June 26 recorded ten cases of dogs tested positive for rabies. “Until now, we have noted there are ten positive cases of canine rabies,” he said. He revealed that the ten positive cases of canine rabies occurred at eight villages, like the Sayan village (Ubud), Tampaksiring village, Pupuan village, Taro village, Batuan Kaler, Guwang, Sukawati, and the area of Buruan village. So, by looking at the case, the location indeed has spread in several subdistricts in Gianyar. “One case averagely occurs at each village. Only a few villages are detected to have two dogs suffering from rabies,” he added. Related to the case, its ranks immediately implemented emergency mass vaccination by targeting the whole pet dogs of residents at the ten locations, including wild dogs. Based on data from April 17 until today, a total of 14,735 dogs have been vaccinated at eight villages declared to have positive rabies dog. As for the elimination, so far 312 dogs have been eliminated. “We do not do elimination haphazardly. The elimination of stray dogs will only be done if there is a request from a village,” he added. Elimination was done in the area of Buruan village some time ago. According to him, the elimination is done based on request of local village apparatus. Definitely it is preceded with mass vaccination for pet dogs of residents, and the dogs were given a marker in the form of necklace. “As in Buruan, we did the elimination to dogs owned by residents from the morning till late in the afternoon. The elimination was then carried out in the afternoon. Only few dogs were eliminated and they are entirely wild dogs whose owners are unknown,” he added. Related to the eight villages declared to have positive dogs suffering from rabies, his party immediately established the village as a red zone. “Currently, the vaccination program remains to continue. In the meantime, the elimination is only done if there is a request from headman, especially for wild dogs,” he concluded. (kmb35)

SINGARAJA - In this dry season, the residents of Pacung village, Tejakula subdistrict, apparently no longer have to face clean water crisis like the drought in previous years. It is enabled because the village government managed to build a water network by utilizing funds from central government as well as the government of Bali and Buleleng with a total budget of IDR 4.8 billion in the fiscal year 2014. A reservoir has the capacity of 100 liters, while the other four reservoirs respectively can accommodate 50 liters of clean water. “We had built a pipeline to a house, but at the end of the distribution pipe burst because the water pressure was so high. Rousseff arrives at the White House on Monday for dinner with Obama. They meet again Tuesday for more formal talks and a joint White House news conference. “I would fully expect that climate and the environment will be an important part of the agenda,” said deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes. The meeting comes six months before world leaders gather at a United Nations-sponsored conference in Paris in December to finalize a climate treaty. Obama has argued that a gradually warming planet could worsen social tensions and political instability worldwide, in addition to harming the U.S. Countries are making their positions on climate change clear ahead of the Paris talks. The U.S. already has announced a 2025 deadline to reduce emissions of heat-trapping gases by 26 percent to 28 percent below 2005 levels. It was unclear whether Rousseff would announce her country’s targets while in

Washington. Regardless, Rhodes billed the meeting as “another key milestone on the road to Paris.” Obama has engaged various counterparts on the issue, including the leaders of China and India, Rhodes noted. UK will prosecute ex-pol with dementia with child sex crimes

LONDON — British prosecutors have reversed their position and will charge a former lawmaker who now has severe dementia with sex crimes against children. The Crown Prosecution Service said Monday that a judge and jury would conduct a “trial of the facts” in the case of 86-year-old Greville Janner, although his illness means he likely will not be convicted or punished. Police and child abuse victims expressed outrage when prosecutors announced in April that they would not charge Janner over alleged offenses against boys several decades ago, even though there was enough evidence to prosecute. Prosecutors said his Alzheimer’s meant he was not fit to stand trial. But after his alleged victims complained, prosecutors decided “it was in the public interest to bring proceedings before the court.” Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders said deciding whether to prosecute had been “an extremely difficult and borderline case because of the strong arguments on both sides.” She said it was “a matter of real regret” that Janner had not been prosecuted sooner. Janner was a Labour Party lawmaker from 1970-97, later serving in the House of Lords. He is accused of 22 offenses in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, most involving boys in children’s homes in Janner’s central England constituency. His family says he is innocent. Liz Dux, a lawyer who represents some of the alleged victims, said he clients were delighted by the decision. “They have felt deeply frustrated by the criminal justice system,” she said. “However, this decision has given them more hope of finally establishing the truth.”(ap)

BEIJING - Countries from five continents formally signed up Monday to the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank -- a potential rival to the Washington-based World Bank -- as Beijing steps up its global diplomatic and economic role. Australia was the first country to sign the articles of association creating the AIIB’s legal framework at a ceremony in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, an AFP journalist saw, followed by 49 other founding members. Seven more are expected to do so by the end of the year. The bank will have a share capital of $100 billion, with $20 billion paid in initially, the document showed. The signing “is an embodiment of the concrete action and efforts made by all countries in the spirit of solidarity, openness, inclusion and cooperation”, Chinese President Xi Jinping said after the ceremony. Signalling China’s central role at the bank, he added: “Now we are willing to listen to your views and proposals.” The AIIB has been viewed by some as a rival to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, and the United States and Japan -- the world’s largest and third-largest economies, respectively -- have notably declined to join. Earlier this month, former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke rebuked US lawmakers for effectively encouraging the AIIB’s formation by blocking reforms giving developing nations a greater say in the IMF. Beijing will be by far the largest AIIB shareholder at about 30 percent, the articles of association posted on the website of China’s finance ministry showed. India is the second biggest at 8.4 percent with Russia third on 6.5 percent. Among non-Asian participants, Germany is the largest shareholder with 4.5 percent, followed by France with 3.4 percent and Brazil on 3.2 percent. The AIIB is expected to go into operation later this year and its headquarters will be in Beijing, despite calls from Indonesia that it be based in Jakarta, further cementing China’s prominence in the institution. But all financial terms in the agreement are in US dollars, rather than China’s currency, the renminbi, and the bank’s working language will be English. Only 50 of the 57 countries that have applied for founding membership signed up in Beijing on Monday, and the finance ministry said the remainder -- Denmark, Kuwait, Malaysia, Philippines, Poland, South Africa and Thailand -- have yet to ratify the necessary agreements. Washington sought to dissuade its allies from taking part but European countries including Britain, France and Germany have rushed to sign up as they seek to bolster ties with the world’s second-largest economy. There are some concerns over transparency of the lender, which will fund infrastructure in Asia, as well as worries that a resurgent Beijing will use it to push its own geopolitical and economic interests. Despite the closures, pensioners lined up just after dawn at bank branches hoping they would have access to their pensions, which were due to be paid Monday. The bank closures came after Greeks rushed to ATMs over the weekend to withdraw money following Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ surprise call for a referendum on creditor proposals for the reforms Greece should take to gain access to blocked bailout funds. The referendum has been set for Sunday, and the government has been advocating Greeks vote against the proposals. The capital controls are meant to staunch the flow of money out of Greek banks and spur the country’s creditors to offer concessions before Greece’s international bailout program expires

Although credit and cash card transactions have not been restricted, in practice most retailers were not accepting card transactions Monday morning. Many of Greece’s retirees don’t have bank cards and collect their pensions directly from the bank tellers. Long lines of elderly Greeks formed at neighborhood bank branches, despite them being told the banks would not open for the day. Deputy Minister of State Terence Quick said special arrangements would be made for pensions. Speaking on private Antenna television, he said retirees would be allowed to access their full pensions in cash due to the fact that many don’t have bank cards. Under the bank transaction restrictions, electronic transfers and bill payments are allowed, but only within the country. The government also stressed the controls would not affect foreign tourists, who would have no limits on cash withdrawals with foreign bank cards. (ap)

As a dedicated yogi for over 40 years, he hosted a Yin Yoga session under a spectacular Bali sunset atop the cliff at the Uluwatu Surf Villas. After a healthy dinner donated by Alchemy of Ubud and the local Lands End Cafe, Gerry narrated a slideshow of his early adventures to Uluwatu and surrounding iconic breaks, also offering his insights and words of wisdom on surfing and life. Narrating countless original photographs from Dick Hoole, Dana Edmunds, Dan Merkle and Don King dating as far back as back as 1970s, Gerry told his story of the early days surfing Indonesia - getting lost among the thickets and shrubbery trying to find Uluwatu; rickety bemo rides from Kuta, the scarcity of water on the Bukit, and 16 hour boat rides to G-Land. With over 300 guests in attendance, this event was a huge success. “It goes to show that PCU has a strong following and that people care about the environmental issues facing Uluwatu,” comments PCU project manager Curtis Lowe. What attracted me also brought more and more people and as the surfing world grew so did the crowds at Uluwatu. In the beginning, there were no plastic containers; water, drinks and food came in glass bottles, on plates or maybe banana leaves that would be reused or easily disposed of. Trash was dumped in the ravines, rain washed it out to sea and once again man used the ocean to clean up his mess. This worked, more or less, if the waste was organic but then came plastic containers and more people. Without the infrastructure to support the rapidly escalating usage, the raw sewage and garbage issues reached critical mass in a short time. Project Clean Uluwatu is the initial effort directed toward dealing with this ever growing problem and for the moment it has the edge.

The attractiveness of the waves, the lifestyle and the Balinese people is still as great as it ever was. It does, however, continue to bring visitors in increasing numbers and the wake they leave as they pass is not small. Please support the continuing undertakings of PCU as they tackle this monumental task. Jaja gadang tain temuati is one of the traditional cakes of community in Bali. It is called jaja gadang tain temuati because it is green (gadang) and has the shape of small round worm excrement (tain temuati). This very tender and sweet cake exudes a very typical flavor. Moreover, it is very safe to consume because the ingredients and coloring agent are made of organic substance. The main ingredient is rice flour mixed with green leaf extract produced by daun suji or dracaena leaf. It is used to make the cake look greenish as well as engender a delicious flavor, and fragrance. To serve the cake, it is put onto a small dish and then sprinkled with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. On days of yore, the cake was presented with a tekor (dishshaped banana leaf). This cake is usually served when people held grandiose religious ceremonies (engaging villagers). But now, the traditional cake is very rare. Aside from being difficult and complicated preparation, the ingredient in use is also of selected rice processed manually. Preparations: first of all, the selected rice is soaked with clean water for about 6 hours. After that, the rice is made into flour by means of crushing. The flour is then clenched into the shape of balls. Then, steam all the batters until cooked or for 15 minutes. Take out the cooked flour and then mixed with the extract of dracaena leaf and give a small amount of starch to make it sticky. Unlike in the past, to make the batter sticky people usually used cassava. Later on, the flour batter is crushed and kneaded until refined. Subsequently, the batter is formed by using coconut shell mold having many small holes. This mold is put on the flour and then driven while rolling it. From the holes of coconut shell mold will come out a cake resembling the earth worm excrement. Afterward, the cake is placed on a banana leaf and then steamed again for about 15 minutes. When having cooked, the cake is taken out and cooled. For the presentation, the cake should be removed from the banana leaves one by one. Then, put them on the plate and sprinkle with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. To sprinkle the sugar, use banana leaf whose end has been torn up resembling a brush. Having sprinkled it evenly, the cake is ready to serve. (kmb)

Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported one death, a 20-year-old woman with burns to 90 percent of her body who was taken off life support with her family’s consent. It said her 12-yearold brother also had burns on 90 percent of his body. Police recommended criminal charges against the organizer of Saturday’s party, as well as two technicians, at the Formosa Fun Coast theme park in suburban Taipei. “It’s still not clear what happened, but there were a number of people smoking and the weather was warm,” New Taipei City news department head Lin Chieh-yu said. Temperatures around greater Taipei topped 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 F) before the party. The three tons of colored starchbased powder bought by the organizers from Tai Won, a seller in the island’s southern county of Yunlin, were flammable, said Chou Hui-fang, a representative of the seller. She said the buyer was informed about the risk of fire. “Whether it’s corn starch or flour starch, this kind of stuff, no matter how

long it’s been around, if it’s in dense quantities and if it’s hot, it can catch fire,” Chou said. Weakening economy caused by reliance on commodities JAKARTA - Indonesia’s economy has been weakening due to continued dependence on the country’s commodities, an official of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said on Sunday. “The Indonesian economy, which recorded growth the last 10 years, is now weakening because we have been ‘trapped’ by benefits from commodities for a long time and have forgotten how to develop industries and infrastructure,” Deputy Chairman of Banking and Financial Affairs of Kadin Rosan P. Roeslani stated. Therefore, Indonesia should realize its infrastructural and industrial development plans soon to revitalize the country’s economic development, he emphasized, adding that infrastructure and industries were the primary instruments of growth of both national and regional economies. Brazil face familiar post-mortem after early Copa exit SAO PAULO - Brazil’s Copa America exit against Paraguay has plunged them into the doldrums again and sparked a well-worn debate about how to restore the national side to its former glory. A year after they were hammered 7-1 by Germany in the World Cup, the post-mortem following another tournament exit is going over some familiar ground. The diagnosis -- like a year ago -- is that with few truly great players and a chaotic domestic game, the system needs remodelling from the ground up. “Getting knocked out on penalties again can’t hide the reality,” newspaper columnist Juca Kfouri wrote in the Folha de S.Paulo on Sunday. “We lack players, we lack a team, we lack a coach, while at the top there is an excess of incompetence.” Kfouri, like many other fans, blames the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and Dunga, the coach who took over two weeks after their World Cup

humiliation last year. Dunga’s position does not seem in danger after Saturday’s 4-3 penalty shootout defeat by Paraguay, but he is hardly popular. His defensive playing style and a lack of personal charm in what is one of the country’s highest-profile jobs have won him few friends. The same could be said for the CBF. The organisation was criticised after the 7-1 Germany defeat for not pausing to take stock and for failing to understand that Brazilian football has gone backwards. They bottled it.” Dunga blamed the defeat on a virus he said struck down some players before the match but added that the loss would toughen up his young squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, which begin in October. SANTIAGO - Chile defender Gonzalo Jara will miss the rest of the Copa America after being suspended for three matches on Sunday for sticking his finger up an opponent’s backside and feigning injury during a match. CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, said in a statement it was suspending Jara for “unsporting behaviour”. It also fined the Chilean FA $7,500. Jara will miss Chile’s semi-final clash with Peru on Monday and, depending on the result of that match, either the final or third-place playoff. He will also be ineligible for Chile’s opening match of the qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup. Television images from Chile’s quarter-final against Uruguay showed Jara grabbing the backside of Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and sticking his finger up it. Cavani responded by gently pushing Jara away but the Chilean fell to the ground as if he had been punched. The referee booked both players. It was Cavani’s second yellow card and he was sent off. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says the Spanish league (LFP) has filed an appeal against the FIFA decision, which avoids the Qatari summer heat. The court has not set a hearing date. A November-December tournament would shut down top European leagues for eight peak weeks and

require more summer fixtures. It is the first formal legal challenge to moving the World Cup in Qatar from the traditional June-July slot. FIFA’s executive committee approved the change in March, 18 months after requesting a global consultation. The Spanish league is a member of the European Professional Football Leagues group, which was consulted. FIFA rejected a European clubs and leagues proposal to play in May-June.
