LOS ANGELES/ SAN FRANCISCO - When “The Internship,” a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, hits movie theaters on June 7, Google will be taking more than a little interest in how the film is received. In an unusual collaboration, the Internet giant was closely involved with the film, a $58 million Fox production which features two middle-aged watch salesmen who are determined to get a job at Google. Amidst the comedic hijinks, the film indeed delivers a picture of a kind and gentle Google, a company that offers free food and exercise classes and is in every respect the place you’d like to work. Various Google products get plugs in the film, and co-founder Sergey Brin gets a cameo role. The favorable PR comes at an opportune moment for Google, whose unofficial motto is “Don’t Be Evil” but which is often portrayed in far darker tones by privacy advocates, antitrust regulators and competitors such as Microsoft. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recently began exploring a new set of antitrust allegations against the company, sources told Reuters last week. “It’s a good move. It’s going to
enhance and warm up Google’s image perception,” said former Coca Cola chief marketing officer Peter Sealey, who is an adjunct professor at Claremont Graduate University and worked as a consultant for Google seven years ago. The movie is a far cry from the Hollywood experience of rival Facebook. The social networking kingpin did not collaborate with “The Social Network,” which focused heavily on the conflicts between founder Mark Zuckerberg and his early partners and didn’t make any of them look very good. “Movies like this are always a risk,” said Howard Bragman, a Hollywood publicist and vice-chairman of the Internet image-management firm Reputation. com. “They can be great for employee morale or they can drag it down.” Early signs suggest Google’s gamble may pay off. The website Marketingland. com said the film was “A fun movie, but also a beautiful Google commercial.”

Sanjay Desai, his doctor, said Khan’s surgery in a Mumbai hospital on Tuesday was successful but he will need to rest for two months. He refused to use body doubles and performed his own stunts for the movie, the Press Trust of India

Indonesia can no longer just expect fuel to maintain the energy security. Sooner or later, our fuel must follow international prices. In other words, the fuel subsidy will be revoke by degrees. To that end, the government will maximize the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Susilo Siswoutomo, said in the upcoming decade the demand for liquefied natural gas would be soaring. According to projection made by global consultant Wood Mackenzie, in 2025 India would record the growth in LNG demand at 20 million tons. “Conversion program from fuel to gas will also encourage the future gas consumption. In 2020, it is estimated that approximately 50 percent of fuel needs in Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan can be converted to gas,” said Susilo in Legian, Tuesday (May 28). He explained the LNG demand was estimated to keep on rising in domestic market in 2020 as driven by surging needs of various sectors. They included the state-owned power plant (PLN) and demand from the industry such as fertilizer, metal, ceramic, paper, glass and food industries. “Bali region does not too much need gas. At least, it is only required
to meet the needs of Gilimanuk and Pemaron gas-fired power plant.At the moment, our party is thinking of installing undersea transmission aiming to supply gas to Bali,” he said. He explained that government was also exploring the possibility of utilizing LNG to power marine vessel. This measure could increase more opportunities. In terms of supply, the prospect of national LNG industry was strongly supported by the amount of natural gas resources owned. Based on geological estimation, the amount of oil and gas resources lay in 60 basins on land and offshore consisting of approximately 70 billion barrels (bbls) of petroleum and 330 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas. Meanwhile, the amount of reserves that could be produced with the current economic and technology condition approximately reached 5 bbls of petroleum and 92 tcf of natural gas. “The opportunities are widely open because the demand and supply are not linear,” he said.
It was mentioned the total gas demand for industry in 2013 reached 2,491 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd). However, the supply could just be met as much as 1,913 mmscfd. Only East Java could meet its own supply. The supply in the region reached 854 mmscfd, while its demand only came to 717 mmscfd. “West Java and Central Java will remain lack of gas supply up to 578 mmscfd. The gas supply for West Java can just be met as much as 1,026 mmscfd, while the total demand comes to 1,704 mmscfd. Then, Central Java can meet 33 mmscfd from the total demand of 71 mmscfd,” he explained. He estimated that gas demand in Java in 2020 would reach 3,388 mmscfd, while based on the existing contract it could only be supplied as much as 1,680 mmscfd. Position of the gas supply to East Java remained excessive up to 2020, while West Java and Central Java stayed to show a deficit. (kmb27)

Traders of foreign exchange urged Bank Indonesia to revoke the Circular No.15/3/DPM. The rule issued on May 1, 2013 was considered burdensome because it required the foreign exchange traders to include the underlying documents in any dollar purchase at banks. “Bank Indonesia must revoke the circular because this industry has gone through a pretty strict rule, especially of the Center for Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis (PPTAK),” said Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Association of Foreign Exchange Traders, Ayu Astuti D, Tuesday (May 28). She said that foreign exchange businesses always included the underlying document in the transaction with particular provisions. Besides, it also kept tracking the origin of foreign exchange and who exchanged the money. “This requirement is considered burdensome by the traders and the community or companies wishing to buy foreign currency,” she said. Nevertheless, the condition in Bali, said Ayu, was not too difficult after the issuance of the circular. All foreign exchange traders in Bali were relatively easy to get dollars in physical form. However, this condition did not apply in other regions. Foreign exchange industry in Bali was benefited by the number of tourists coming to Bali. “The currency transaction by 121 members remains relatively in large amount. Thus, we do not have problems to get dollars,” she said. Other than asking for Bank Indonesia to revoke the circular No.15/3/ DPM, her party also encouraged Bank Indonesia to revise the Regulation of Bank Indonesia No. 12/22/PBI/2010 about Foreign Exchange Traders and classify the foreign exchange traders having got an official license from central bank in order to improve the governance of foreign exchange trading industry. “Aside from harming consumers by reducing the appraisal of the exchanged money, the illegal money changer companies also have the potential to become one of the money laundering. Financial report of the companies is also very difficult to be tracked. They seriously harm the image of licensed companies,” she explained. Based on data of the APVA Bali in 2012, said Astuti, approximately 40 percent of the total foreign exchange companies or money changers operating in Bali did not have business license in the field of currency trading. “A lot of those companies have closed due to having no permit from Bank Indonesia,” she said. Ayu explained the rampant illegal foreign exchange companies had happened since few years ago, but so far there had been no follow-up. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida - Corporate researchers may be living on the moon by the time NASA astronauts head off to visit an asteroid in the 2020s, a study of future human missions unveiled on Thursday shows. The study by Bigelow Aerospace, commissioned by NASA, shows “a lot of excitement and interest from various companies” for such ventures, said Robert Bigelow, founder and president of the Las Vegas-based firm. The projects range from pharmaceutical research aboard Earthorbiting habitats, to missions to the moon’s surface, he said on Thursday, citing a draft of the report due to be released in a few weeks. NASA intends to follow the International Space Station program with astronaut visits to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars about a decade later. President Barack Obama’s proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning October 1 requests $105 million for the U.S. space agency to begin work on a mission to find a small asteroid and reposition it around the moon for a future visit by astronauts.
But private companies, including Bigelow Aerospace, have more interest in the moon itself, Bigelow told reporters on a conference call on Thursday. William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s head of space operations, said on the call “it’s important for us to know that there’s some interest in moon activity and lunar surface activity.” “We can take advantage of what the private sector is doing” in areas such as space transportation, life support systems and other technologies needed for travel beyond the space station’s 250 mile high orbit, he noted. NASA typically completes its mission planning before looking at what partnerships and collaborations may be possible, Gerstenmaier added. “We thought that this time we would kind of turn that around a little bit, that we would ask industry first what they’re interested in

Googly Eyes Help Rats Watch for Birds Rats can always see what’s above them thanks to their shifty eyes, scientists say. Researchers discovered that running rats are constantly moving their eyes in opposite directions, side to side and up and down, which lets them keep a permanent watch for predatory birds that might be hovering in the air. For humans, the eyes on our faces must move precisely in the same direction to fixate on an object. If the pupils are not pointed along the same line, people start seeing double. It turns out that could be a good

Both our eyes move together and always follow the same object,” study researcher Jason Kerr from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics said in a statement. “In rats, on the other hand, the eyes generally move in opposite directions,” Kerr explained. Kerr and colleagues attached tiny cameras to the rats’ heads to record their speedy eye movements while running. The direction of the rats’ right eye and left eye changed depending on the animals’ head position, the researchers found. “When the head points downward, the eyes move back, away from the tip of the nose,” Kerr said. “When the rat lifts its head, the eyes look forward: cross-eyed, so to speak. If the animal puts its head on one side, the eye on the lower side moves up and the other eye moves down.” These opposing eye movements mean a rat’s line of vision can vary widely — by as much as 40 degrees in the horizontal plane and up to 60 degrees in the vertical plane, the researchers said. What’s more, the divergent movements mean rats can’t fuse the visual information entering each eye into a single image like humans can. But having googly eyes comes with a big advantage for rats: It allows them to keep the space above in view all the time, simultaneously by both eyes. This does not occur in any other region of the rat’s visual field, the researchers said. The team thinks this ability is an adaptation to look out for threats from the air, since many species of predatory birds feast on rats.

Nowadays, people bounce effortlessly from reading news to blogs to email. And it turns out the reading habits of people in medieval times weren’t so different, a new book suggests. People in 14th-century London consumed a variety of texts, often linked together in bound volumes. Arthur Bahr, a literature professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explores these habits in his new book “Fragments and Assemblages” (University of Chicago Press, 2013). “Medieval manuscripts usually survive as fragments, and at the same time, they are also very often assemblages of multiple, disparate works,” Bahr told MIT news. SINGARAJA - Coal-fired power plant mega project at Celukan Bawang in Gerokgak subdistrict is threatened to be closed. It happened because the investor PT GEB and China Hudian Engineering Corporation (CHEC) being responsible for the project had yet completed the licenses required by Buleleng government. Information collected in the field on Tuesday (May 28) mentioned if the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana issued a reprimand to PT GEB and CHEC. Through the letter No. 648/1401/Ekbang dated on April 19, 2013 the regent highlighted five points to stop the mega project. Firstly, the investor had not presented the company profile, documents of the environmental impact assessment (Amdal), layout, time schedule and the license issued by the central government and local government. Additionally, the regent pointed out if the promise of investor to hold a presentation regarding the matter of formal juridical matter after the last Chinese New Year had not been fulfilled. In response to such condition, the regent firmly took a measure to stop the project. The letter was sent to investor PT GEB addressed to Tjandra Limanjaya and also forwarded to Governor of Bali, the Bali Environment Agency (BLH), Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Chairman of Buleleng House and several other key officials. Copy of the letter forwarded to the House was immediately responded.
Related to issuance of the reprimand, the House held an audience (RDP) with the executive and investor PT GEB and CHEC on Tuesday. It was chaired of the Acting Chairman of Buleleng House, Gede Supriyatna, and attended by chairman of the commission and the members. In the audience was revealed if the request of the regent to investor to stop the activities had been responded by the investor PT. GEB and CHEC. However, the companies denied if they just received the letter early in May 2013, while the letter was dated April 19, 2013. Responding to the reprimand to stop the activities, Field Coordinator of PT GEB, Egon Wisjnu S, was not willing to give some comments. He said the data requested by county government had already been prepared. The data ranged from company profile, layout, and presentation of the environment impact assessment. According to Ferry, PD Parkir in this case was the authority developing and managing the parking service at the area of Sanglah Hospital. “We as the management of Sanglah Hospital hand over the land to be developed and managed by PD Parkir. So, the facility development must be the responsibility of PD Parkir,” said Ferry If the entrance gates had been built, the employees of Sanglah Hospital that frequently broke into the parking lot could surely be sorted and directed to the rear parking area. “If they insist on parking in front, of course, they have to pay and can no longer break into,” said Ferry. If the making of entrance gates could not overcome the parking problem, Sanglah Hospital already had a medium-term plan expected to be realized by the management. “Our medium-term plan is to add a parking lot by using the existing vacant land area,” said Ferry. Currently the parking lot at Sanglah Hospital could only hold 210 cars and approximately 1,800 units of motorcycle. “If the additional slot is carried out, the car parking space can hold 435 units,” said Ferry. If the additional slots would be unable to accommodate, then it would be applied the third alternative, namely the hourly basis parking system. With the hourly system, people were expected to become more aware so that they would not park their vehicle for a long time at Sanglah Hospital. Regional Secretary of Denpasar Municipality, AAN Rai Iswara, said there were some flooding problems in Denpasar whose handling required coordination across the counties and municipality and national level. For instance, the Muding Creek was the tributary of Mati River emptying into the Umadui moving dam. “There are some problems regarding narrow grooves due to winding residential development, and the watershed of Muding Creek that have not been entirely protected with levees, and silting at Mati River,” said Rai Iswara in Denpasar, Tuesday (May 28). To that end, Rai Iswara expected that people around the area should make coordination with the Integrated Licensing Office
and Denpasar Investment Board before carrying out any residential development. By that way, the borders of streams and drainage could be known in relation to the building construction that could later on have an impact on the feasibility of settlement. “Arrangement of the Muding Creek area can be carried out together with the Badung, Denpasar, Bali Province and Working Unit of the Development of Settlement Environmental Sanitation (P2LP) Bali. KAFR KILA, Lebanon — The giant posters of Hezbollah fighters killed in Lebanon’s wars with Israel still dot the picturesque landscape of southern Lebanon, the few remaining reminders of some of the epic battles that once made the Shiite guerrilla group and its leader Hassan Nasrallah heroes in the Arab world. Nowadays, they are overshadowed by fresh portraits of Hezbollah fighters who have died fighting fellow Muslims in the civil war in neighboring Syria. It’s a striking transformation and a strategic shift for the fiercely antiIsrael group, one that some of its most loyal supporters in the Shiite community may be reluctant to embrace. Hezbollah’s very public and bloody foray fighting alongside President Bashar Assad’s regime against rebels in Syria’s 2-year-old civil war has a steep price. It has emboldened the group’s critics in the Arab world and its Western-backed political opponents in Lebanon. It also risks wrecking the group’s already eroding image among many Lebanese as their champion and protector against Israel, which it drove out of southern Lebanon in 2000 and fought to a standstill in 2006. Also, by linking its fate to the Assad
regime’s survival and declaring war on Syria’s mainly Sunni rebels, Hezbollah also could bring the war directly into Lebanon. Its stance threatens to spark retaliation from Lebanese Sunnis supporting their Syrian brethren or from the rebels themselves carrying out attacks against the Shiite group on its home turf in Lebanon. Recent rocket fire against a pro-Hezbollah neighborhood of Beirut underlined the threat of violence spreading. Hezbollah, which was founded in 1982 with Iranian support to fight Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, has not carried out a single known rocket attack into Israel since the 2006 war. Many among the group’s Shiite constituency — about a third of the population — are tired of wars and even the most ideologically committed to Hezbollah’s anti-Israel rhetoric are reluctant to see their villages destroyed again. Now, as more of their men return
home in coffins from Syria, the group faces an uphill battle in trying to convince their countrymen that the war in Syria is part of their wider battle against Israel and its U.S. backers. “If Israel comes back to Lebanon, I will be the first volunteer to go on the battlefield,” said Ahmad Taleb, a 37year-old Shiite from the Aaita border village, where Hezbollah’s killing of Israeli soldiers triggered the 2006 war. Taleb spent 11 years in an Israeli jail during the country’s 18-year occupation of south Lebanon, which ended in 2000. As for heeding the call to fight in Syria, Taleb was reluctant. “I will not volunteer, but I will go if the party tells me to,” he said. In a weekend speech marking the anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, Nasrallah sought to portray the fight in Syria alongside Assad’s army as an existential war aimed at protecting Lebanon.

LONDON - Activists calling themselves Anonymous UK have posted on the Internet what they say are personal details of members of the English Defence League (EDL), a far-right group that has led an anti-Muslim backlash after a killing in London last week. The EDL has staged protests and skirmished with police since soldier Lee Rigby was hacked to death in a London street last Wednesday by two men who said the killing was in retaliation for the deaths of Muslims at the hands of British forces abroad. Police shot and wounded the attackers, both Britons of Nigerian descent, at the scene of the crime. One, Michael Adebolajo, is still in hospital under armed guard while the other, Michael Adebowale, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday and will be questioned by police on Wednesday. Rigby’s killing galvanized the small but vocal EDL, which organized a march through central London on Monday during which about 1,000 people chanted slogans such as “Muslim killers off our streets”. Four EDL supporters who were arrested during that march have been charged with various offences. In response to these events, Anonymous UK posted late on Tuesday what it described as a “mass data leak” including names, mobile telephone numbers and addresses of EDL members and donors, as well as what purported to be details about past convictions of some of the people listed. The name Anonymous UK suggested that the person or people behind the post were part of the loosely organized international “hacktivist” collective Anonymous, which has taken credit for attacks on a variety of targets including the CIA. Anonymous UK had earlier on Tuesday posted a video message on YouTube threatening the EDL with the “systematic and comprehensive dessication of your cult”. The message, posted under the user name “IWill Object”, condemned Rigby’s killing and accused the EDL of exploiting the murder to spread hatred. “You ... have used this as another excuse to further spread your campaign of hate, bigotry and misinformation,” it said. “Under the guise of national pride you have instigated crimes against the innocent and incited the subjugation of Muslims”. The EDL could not immediately be reached for comment. Rigby’s killing, as well as the EDL’s response to it, have been widely condemned across the political and religious spectrum in Britain and there have been countless calls for unity and solidarity among all Britons. Adebolajo’s family condemned the attack as senseless on Tuesday and said they felt ashamed and horrified.

NEW YORK - The United States on Tuesday unveiled the world’s “largest” money laundering probe targeting the digital currency operator Liberty Reserve, striking a major blow against what a prosecutor termed the “Wild West” of virtual banking. The Costa Rica-based entity, which handled huge amounts of money outside the control of national governments, is charged with running a “$6 billion money laundering scheme and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business,” the US Attorney’s office for New York said. Prosecutors said Liberty Reserve processed at least 55 million illegal transactions for at least one million users “and facilitated global criminal conduct.” The probe involved law enforcement in 17 countries and “is believed to be the largest money laundering prosecution in history,” the prosecutor’s office said. Liberty Reserve’s principals were arrested Friday in a round-up launched simultaneously in Costa Rica, Spain and New York, sealing the fate of a company that had been one of the most successful in the popular but increasingly scrutinized world of unofficial banking and virtual currencies. One of them, Russian citizen Maxim Chukharev, is set to be extradited to the United States, Costa Rican authorities said Tuesday. The indictment accuses Liberty Reserve founder Arthur Budovsky -- a former US citizen who took Costa Rican nationality -- and his partners of creating a firm that masqueraded as a convenient and legitimate money transfer system. In reality, the organization turned itself into the “financial hub of the cybercrime world,” the indictment said. US Attorney Preet Bharara said “the only liberty that Liberty Reserve gave many of its users was the freedom to commit crime.” Customers would go to Liberty Reserve’s now shut-down website to buy the online currency, known as LRs, that could then be used in transactions with other LR users. The system was not registered with US authorities and unlike some other non-state currency systems did not require proof of identity for users. Adding another important layer of anonymity, Liberty required customers to buy or sell their LRs via third party exchangers, meaning that there was no direct link between a customer’s traditional bank account and Liberty’s system. An extra service would allow a user to hide “his own Liberty Reserve account number when transferring funds, effectively making the transfer completely untraceable, even within Liberty Reserve’s already opaque system.” The system, the indictment says, was tailor-made for criminal transactions and money-laundering, facilitating “a broad range of online criminal activity, including credit card fraud, identity theft, investment fraud, computer hacking, child pornography, and narcotics trafficking.” “The scope of the defendants’ unlawful conduct is staggering,” the indictment said. “With more than 200,000 users in the United States, Liberty Reserve processed more than 12 million financial transactions annually, with a combined value of more than $1.4 billion.” Authorities say that when Liberty Reserve realized it was under investigation it made a show of shutting down, yet continued to operate behind an array of shell companies in Australia, China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Morocco, Russia and Spain. Budovsky and his partners started Liberty Reserve after an earlier similar venture, Gold Age Inc, which traded the E-Gold digital currency, was shut down by US authorities. It was then that Budovsky, 39, emigrated to Costa Rica, later renouncing his US citizenship, and becoming resident in The Netherlands. He was arrested in Spain. He and his four partners, who range in age from 27 to 46, face maximum prison terms of 20 years if found guilty of conspiracy to commit money laundering, as well as up to 10 years on charges related to running an unlicensed money transmitting business.

The avalanched materials slid down almost to 10 meters deep. “It happened at around 7:30 p.m. As being persistently flushed by rain, the bridge suddenly avalanched,” said Headman of Bangli, Nyoman Rastawa, when met at the avalanche location, Tuesday (May 28). The length of avalanched bridge reached 20 meters with a width of 2 meters. According to Rastawa, the bridge had been old enough. It was estimated to have been almost 40 years old. Allegedly, since it was often eroded by floods, the land beneath the bridge was unstable so that kindled avalanche. As a result of this incident, local villagers could not drive car to transport their vegetable crops. Instead, they have to turn back
around 7 miles when wishing to drive a car to Baturiti and vice versa. “For the time being, the economy of resident is paralyzed. They cannot transport vegetables by car,” he complained. Residents could only pass on by motorbike on the remaining asphalt that had not collapsed. They should be careful because the avalanched land looked unstable. People worried if it would also be followed by subsequent avalanche and the path ultimately totally broke off. To avoid casualties, residents put up a bamboo barrier along the avalanched path. A caution sign was also installed at two closest points to the avalanche site. According to Rastawa, the avalanched path was the main road section for his residents wishing to go to Bedugul and Buleleng. The path also had busy traffic of tourists from Jatiluwih to Bedugul and vice versa. “Now, tourism activity really paralyzes
because they have switched to another path,” he explained. This newly inaugurated headman hoped the avalanched path could be fixed soon so that the plantation activity of residents could return to normal. Meanwhile, the subdistrict head of Baturiti, Putu Adi Supraja, asserted the avalanche had been reviewed by the Tabanan Public Works and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). In other words, the local government would soon take immediate measures to resolve it. “Earlier (Tuesday—Ed), the Public Works and Regional Disaster Management Agency officers had inspected and made data collection to location. Hopefully, it could be promptly repaired,” he said. According to Supraja, the avalanched bridge and road were only made from landfill. Team member Dame said Wednesday that Min Bahadur Sherchan returned from Everest because weather conditions were worsening late in the spring climbing season for the Himalayas. Sherchan was having financial difficulties and a government grant for his climb only came last week. BEIJING — The mother of the Chinese newborn trapped in a sewer pipe in a stunning ordeal caught on video had raised the initial alarm and was present for the entire two-hour rescue but did not admit giving birth until confronted by police, reports said Wednesday. The state-run, Hangzhou-based newspaper Dushikuaibao said police became suspicious when they found baby toys and blood-stained toilet paper in the 22-year-old woman’s rented room, in the building where Saturday’s rescue occurred in eastern China. The woman, whose name was not revealed in state media reports, confessed to police when they asked her to undergo a medical checkup. The woman told police she could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered the child Saturday afternoon in the toilet. She said she tried to catch the baby but he slipped into the sewer line and that she alerted her landlord of the trapped baby after she could not pull the child out, the state-run, Jinhua-based Zhezhong News said.

THE HAGUE - Former Bosnian Croat leader Jadranko Prlic was sentenced to 25 years in jail on Wednesday for “ethnic cleansing” that included the murder, rape and expulsion of Muslims from Bosnia during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the Hague also sentenced five others, including Slobodan Praljak, Croatia’s former assistant minister of defense, to jail terms of between 10 and 20 years. The judges said Croatia, which on July 1 will become the second former Yugoslav republic to join the European Union, had been involved in the plan, and that late President Franjo Tudjman believed ethnic cleansing was necessary to create an ethnically pure state that could be joined up to Croatia. Reading from a summary of a judgment that ran to more than 2,600 pages, presiding judge Jean-Claude Antonetti said murders, rapes and deportations had been committed by the armed forces of the self-proclaimed ethnic Croat state of Herceg-Bosna. “The crimes were not the random acts of a few unruly soldiers,” he said. “They were the result of a plan ... to permanently remove the Muslim population of Herceg-Bosna.” The six were also held responsible for the destruction of the Ottoman-era Old Bridge at Mostar, whose shelling became a symbol of the ravages of the 1992-1995 Bosnian conflict.
Fabio Polenghi, 48, was killed on the morning of May 19 when troops moved in to disperse “red shirt” supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had been camped in the center of the capital for weeks, demanding an early election. “The court ruled that orders given by Prime Minister Abhisit and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep that day led to Fabio’s death,” Karom Ponthaklang, a lawyer for the journalist’s family, told reporters. “It is clear from the evidence that the bullet used was the kind used by Thai troops. We are satisfied with the verdict.”
He added that he would ask the Department of Special Investigations, part of the Justice Ministry, to press charges against Abhisit Vejjajiva and Suthep Thaugsuban. Abhisit is now leader of the opposition and the government is led by Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, who won an election in July 2011. Elisabetta Polenghi, one of Fabio’s sisters, told reporters that those ultimately found responsible for his death should be “at least the person leading the operation on the ground”. The ruling could spell further trouble for Abhisit and Suthep, who
were charged last year with giving orders to use live ammunition that led to civilian deaths and have a number of similar cases pending against them. If found guilty, they could face the death penalty or life in prison. Abhisit has defended his order to use live ammunition, saying the protesters’ refusal to negotiate had left his government with few options. Suthep headed the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation, a crisis control center that authorized “live fire” zones during the protest and used emergency powers to shut down radio stations, a television station and websites.

to take place on Wednesday but as the KPK leaders did not come, the team held their own internal meeting led by Shohibul Iman. At the same time KPK leaders received a visit from representatives of the Indonesian Student Executive Body (BEM) to show their appreciation for KPK’s determination to unveiled the Bank Century scandal. Shohibul Iman said the law allows the House of Representatives to use force if KPK leaders still fail to honor the third summon. He said the team will send its third invitation to KPK to attend a meeting on June 5 next week . “If the KPK leaders still fail to come the team will meet to formulate the mechanism of using force,” he said, refusing to go into details.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will confiscate a Metallica guitar that was a gift to the heavy metal-loving governor of the capital Jakarta due to concerns about corruption, an official said Tuesday. A beaming Joko Widodo appeared on TV earlier this month strumming the maroon bass guitar that had belonged to the US band’s Robert Trujillo and was a gift from a concert promoter. But following the TV appearance, the popular governor voluntarily handed the guitar, which bore the words “Giving Back!... Keep Playin’ That Cool Funky Bass!”, to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Following an investigation into the instrument, in line with rules about gifts to officials, the commission said Tuesday the government will confiscate the instrument. “The KPK has investigated and decided that the guitar will be confiscated by the government as there is a conflict of interest which could potentially lead to bribery,” commission official Giri Supradiyono told AFP. “It will be state property.” He added: “The promoter probably knew he (Widodo) was a Metallica fan. There’s a possibility he might expect something in return.” He added that the phrase “Giving Back” on the guitar also suggested a “possible exchange of favours”. During his TV appearance, the governor said he was a huge Metallica fan and also listed Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Napalm Death among his favourite bands. Corruption remains rampant in Indonesia, particularly among public servants, and the country last year slid to 118th of 176 countries in Transparency International’s annual graft index.
Indonesia asks FAO to help control illegal fishing Antara
JAKARTA - Indonesia has asked the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to help control illegal fishing activities in the country. “I have asked the FAO to participate in controlling or informing about illegal fishing activities in the country concerned,” Indonesia’s minister of fisheries and marine resources Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said in a statement received here on Wednesday. He said the cooperation between his ministry and the FAO is mainly aimed at informing recipient countries with regard to illegal fish to minimize illegal fishing activities and in connection with that imported fish must be accompanied with certificate of origin. He said a code of conduct would possibly also be made to create understanding on the issue. “But whether sanction would be given individual recipient or recipient countries it still has yet to be discussed,” he said. He said his ministry would never stop in the fight against the crime in the sea. Based on the ministry’s data the ministry has seized as many as 4,326 fishing boats in 2012, 112 of them believed to have violated the law and 70 of them foreign are fishing boats and 42 others local fishing boats. In the past eight years the ministry had examined 20,064 fishing boats and the cases of 714 of them had been brought to court. The number of local boats believed to have conducted illegal fishing reached 563. “The success of the operation is proof that illegal fishing activities by foreign boats in the Indonesian waters still continue,” he said.

Valentino Rossi has warned his Italian fans that a podium finish is the best he can hope for at Mugello this weekend. The Italian legend won every MotoGP round at the track from 2002 to ‘08. Although he started his return to Yamaha promisingly with second in Qatar, Rossi has not been back on the podium since then and has struggled to match both his teammate Jorge Lorenzo and the factory Hondas. “This is a track that I really like and a good result is important,” he said of Mugello.“Unfortunately we are still not fast enough so we need to improve, especially in dry conditions. We must work hard and improve the bike. “The Mugello race will be diffi-
cult, but we will try to do everything to get the best result. A podium would be really nice.” Honda has won the past three races with Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa. Klopp promises to build a new pressing machine at Dortmund Reuters
Borussia Dortmund are not breaking up and will build a new “pressing machine” for next season with Robert Lewandowksi possibly still on board, flamboyant coach Juergen Klopp said on Wednesday. “I have read that we have a difficult season ahead of us, which doesn’t make sense because we have such a good base and such good quality,” he told Germany’s Bild tabloid. “Naturally, there will be a couple of changes and one or two players will leave. But breakup is the wrong word, there are simply a few changes which we think we can use to our advantage. I’m quite positive. “I can promise that everything will work out in the end. AS Roma forward Pablo Osvaldo has been axed from Italy’s squad for the Confederations Cup in Brazil following his tantrum in Sunday’s Italian Cup final, the country’s soccer federation (FIGC) said on Tuesday. Osvaldo, joint third top scorer in Serie A this season with 16 goals, had been included in a 31-man squad for this week’s training camp before becoming the latest victim of coach Cesare Prandelli’s strict code of ethics. Borussia Dortmund are not breaking up and will build a new “pressing machine” for next season with Robert Lewandowksi possibly still on board, flamboyant coach Juergen Klopp said on Wednesday. “I have read that we have a difficult season ahead of us, which doesn’t make sense because we have such a good base and such good quality,” he told Germany’s Bild tabloid. “Naturally, there will be a couple of changes and one or two players will leave. But breakup is the wrong word, there are simply a few changes which we think we can use to our advantage. I’m quite positive. “I can promise that everything will work out in the end. AS Roma forward Pablo Osvaldo has been axed from Italy’s squad for the Confederations Cup in Brazil following his tantrum in Sunday’s Italian Cup final, the country’s soccer federation (FIGC) said on Tuesday. Osvaldo, joint third top scorer in Serie A this season with 16 goals, had been included in a 31-man squad for this week’s training camp before becoming the latest victim of coach Cesare Prandelli’s strict code of ethics. Valentino Rossi has warned his Italian fans that a podium finish is the best he can hope for at Mugello this weekend. The Italian legend won every MotoGP round at the track from 2002 to ‘08. Although he started his return to Yamaha promisingly with second in Qatar, Rossi has not been back on the podium since then and has struggled to match both his teammate Jorge Lorenzo and the factory Hondas. “This is a track that I really like and a good result is important,” he said of Mugello.“Unfortunately we are still not fast enough so we need to improve, especially in dry conditions. We must work hard and improve the bike. “The Mugello race will be diffi-

KATMANDU, Nepal - An 81-year-old Nepalese man has abandoned his attempt to climb Mount Everest, leaving a Japanese mountaineer with the record as the oldest person to scale the world’s highest mountain. Team member Dame said Wednesday that Min Bahadur Sherchan returned from Everest because weather conditions were worsening late in the spring climbing season for the Himalayas. Sherchan was having financial difficulties and a government grant for his climb only came last week. Sherchan had held the record until last week when 80-year-old Japanese climber Yuichiro Miura scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035foot) mountain.

BEIJING — The mother of the Chinese newborn trapped in a sewer pipe in a stunning ordeal caught on video had raised the initial alarm and was present for the entire two-hour rescue but did not admit giving birth until confronted by police, reports said Wednesday. The state-run, Hangzhou-based newspaper Dushikuaibao said police became suspicious when they found baby toys and blood-stained toilet paper in the 22-year-old woman’s rented room, in the building where Saturday’s rescue occurred in eastern China. The woman, whose name was not revealed in state media reports, confessed to police when they asked her to undergo a medical checkup. The woman told police she could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered the child Saturday afternoon in the toilet. She said she tried to catch the baby but he slipped into the sewer line and that she alerted her landlord of the trapped baby after she could not pull the child out, the state-run, Jinhua-based Zhezhong News said.

BANGKOK - An Italian photo-journalist who was shot dead in Bangkok while taking pictures of a military crackdown on an anti-government protest in 2010 was killed by a bullet fired by a soldier, a Thai court ruled on Wednesday.
THE HAGUE - Former Bosnian Croat leader Jadranko Prlic was sentenced to 25 years in jail on Wednesday for “ethnic cleansing” that included the murder, rape and expulsion of Muslims from Bosnia during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the Hague also sentenced five others, including Slobodan Praljak, Croatia’s former assistant minister of defense, to jail terms of between 10 and 20 years. The judges said Croatia, which on July 1 will become the second former Yugoslav republic to join the European Union, had been involved in the plan, and that late President Franjo Tudjman believed ethnic cleansing was necessary to create an ethnically pure state that could be joined up to Croatia. Reading from a summary of a judgment that ran to more than 2,600 pages, presiding judge Jean-Claude Antonetti said murders, rapes and deportations had been committed by the armed forces of the self-proclaimed ethnic Croat state of Herceg-Bosna. “The crimes were not the random acts of a few unruly soldiers,” he said. “They were the result of a plan ... to permanently remove the Muslim population of Herceg-Bosna.” The six were also held responsible for the destruction of the Ottoman-era Old Bridge at Mostar, whose shelling became a symbol of the ravages of the 1992-1995 Bosnian conflict.
Fabio Polenghi, 48, was killed on the morning of May 19 when troops moved in to disperse “red shirt” supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had been camped in the center of the capital for weeks, demanding an early election. “The court ruled that orders given by Prime Minister Abhisit and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep that day led to Fabio’s death,” Karom Ponthaklang, a lawyer for the journalist’s family, told reporters. “It is clear from the evidence that the bullet used was the kind used by Thai troops. We are satisfied with the verdict.”
He added that he would ask the Department of Special Investigations, part of the Justice Ministry, to press charges against Abhisit Vejjajiva and Suthep Thaugsuban. Abhisit is now leader of the opposition and the government is led by Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, who won an election in July 2011. Elisabetta Polenghi, one of Fabio’s sisters, told reporters that those ultimately found responsible for his death should be “at least the person leading the operation on the ground”. The ruling could spell further trouble for Abhisit and Suthep, who
were charged last year with giving orders to use live ammunition that led to civilian deaths and have a number of similar cases pending against them. If found guilty, they could face the death penalty or life in prison. Abhisit has defended his order to use live ammunition, saying the protesters’ refusal to negotiate had left his government with few options. Suthep headed the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation, a crisis control center that authorized “live fire” zones during the protest and used emergency powers to shut down radio stations, a television station and websites.

Investigations of the case has been dragging on for years implicating a number of the country’s leaders including Vice President Boediono. A number of leaders of the central bank under then Governor Boediono have been named suspects in breaching banking regulation in the process of bailing ailing Bank Century. “This week the team already twice invited the KPK leaders for a meeting, but they failed to appear,” the team leader Muhammad Shohibul Iman said here on Wednesday. The meeting after the second summon was scheduled
to take place on Wednesday but as the KPK leaders did not come, the team held their own internal meeting led by Shohibul Iman. At the same time KPK leaders received a visit from representatives of the Indonesian Student Executive Body (BEM) to show their appreciation for KPK’s determination to unveiled the Bank Century scandal. Shohibul Iman said the law allows the House of Representatives to use force if KPK leaders still fail to honor the third summon. He said the team will send its third invitation to KPK to attend a meeting on June 5 next week . “If the KPK leaders still fail to come the team will meet to formulate the mechanism of using force,” he said, refusing to go into details.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will confiscate a Metallica guitar that was a gift to the heavy metal-loving governor of the capital Jakarta due to concerns about corruption, an official said Tuesday. A beaming Joko Widodo appeared on TV earlier this month strumming the maroon bass guitar that had belonged to the US band’s Robert Trujillo and was a gift from a concert promoter. But following the TV appearance, the popular governor voluntarily handed the guitar, which bore the words “Giving Back!... Keep Playin’ That Cool Funky Bass!”, to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Following an investigation into the instrument, in line with rules about gifts to officials, the commission said Tuesday the government will confiscate the instrument. “The KPK has investigated and decided that the guitar will be confiscated by the government as there is a conflict of interest which could potentially lead to bribery,” commission official Giri Supradiyono told AFP. “It will be state property.” He added: “The promoter probably knew he (Widodo) was a Metallica fan. There’s a possibility he might expect something in return.” He added that the phrase “Giving Back” on the guitar also suggested a “possible exchange of favours”. During his TV appearance, the governor said he was a huge Metallica fan and also listed Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Napalm Death among his favourite bands. Indonesia asks FAO to help control illegal fishing Antara
JAKARTA - Indonesia has asked the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to help control illegal fishing activities in the country. “I have asked the FAO to participate in controlling or informing about illegal fishing activities in the country concerned,” Indonesia’s minister of fisheries and marine resources Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said in a statement received here on Wednesday. He said the cooperation between his ministry and the FAO is mainly aimed at informing recipient countries with regard to illegal fish to minimize illegal fishing activities and in connection with that imported fish must be accompanied with certificate of origin. He said a code of conduct would possibly also be made to create understanding on the issue. “But whether sanction would be given individual recipient or recipient countries it still has yet to be discussed,” he said. He said his ministry would never stop in the fight against the crime in the sea. Based on the ministry’s data the ministry has seized as many as 4,326 fishing boats in 2012, 112 of them believed to have violated the law and 70 of them foreign are fishing boats and 42 others local fishing boats. In the past eight years the ministry had examined 20,064 fishing boats and the cases of 714 of them had been brought to court. The number of local boats believed to have conducted illegal fishing reached 563. “The success of the operation is proof that illegal fishing activities by foreign boats in the Indonesian waters still continue,” he said.

NEW YORK - The United States on Tuesday unveiled the world’s “largest” money laundering probe targeting the digital currency operator Liberty Reserve, striking a major blow against what a prosecutor termed the “Wild West” of virtual banking. The Costa Rica-based entity, which handled huge amounts of money outside the control of national governments, is charged with running a “$6 billion money laundering scheme and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business,” the US Attorney’s office for New York said. Prosecutors said Liberty Reserve processed at least 55 million illegal transactions for at least one million users “and facilitated global criminal conduct.” The probe involved law enforcement in 17 countries and “is believed to be the largest money laundering prosecution in history,” the prosecutor’s office said. Liberty Reserve’s principals were arrested Friday in a round-up launched simultaneously in Costa Rica, Spain and New York, sealing the fate of a company that had been one of the most successful in the popular but increasingly scrutinized world of unofficial banking and virtual currencies. One of them, Russian citizen Maxim Chukharev, is set to be extradited to the United States, Costa Rican authorities said Tuesday. The indictment accuses Liberty Reserve founder Arthur Budovsky -- a former US citizen who took Costa Rican nationality -- and his partners of creating a firm that masqueraded as a convenient and legitimate money transfer system. In reality, the organization turned itself into the “financial hub of the cybercrime world,” the indictment said. US Attorney Preet Bharara said “the only liberty that Liberty Reserve gave many of its users was the freedom to commit crime.” Customers would go to Liberty Reserve’s now shut-down website to buy the online currency, known as LRs, that could then be used in transactions with other LR users. The system was not registered with US authorities and unlike some other non-state currency systems did not require proof of identity for users. Adding another important layer of anonymity, Liberty required customers to buy or sell their LRs via third party exchangers, meaning that there was no direct link between a customer’s traditional bank account and Liberty’s system. An extra service would allow a user to hide “his own Liberty Reserve account number when transferring funds, effectively making the transfer completely untraceable, even within Liberty Reserve’s already opaque system.” The system, the indictment says, was tailor-made for criminal transactions and money-laundering, facilitating “a broad range of online criminal activity, including credit card fraud, identity theft, investment fraud, computer hacking, child pornography, and narcotics trafficking.” “The scope of the defendants’ unlawful conduct is staggering,” the indictment said. “With more than 200,000 users in the United States, Liberty Reserve processed more than 12 million financial transactions annually, with a combined value of more than $1.4 billion.” Authorities say that when Liberty Reserve realized it was under investigation it made a show of shutting down, yet continued to operate behind an array of shell companies in Australia, China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Morocco, Russia and Spain. Budovsky and his partners started Liberty Reserve after an earlier similar venture, Gold Age Inc, which traded the E-Gold digital currency, was shut down by US authorities. It was then that Budovsky, 39, emigrated to Costa Rica, later renouncing his US citizenship, and becoming resident in The Netherlands. He was arrested in Spain. He and his four partners, who range in age from 27 to 46, face maximum prison terms of 20 years if found guilty of conspiracy to commit money laundering, as well as up to 10 years on charges related to running an unlicensed money transmitting business.

As a result, the tourist road section connecting Bedugul to Jatiluwih totally paralyzed and the economic activities of residents were disrupted because their car could not go through. Collapse of the bridge was triggered by rainwater overflow streaming down from cliff top. Due to torrent flows, the bridge supported by culverts directly avalanched. The avalanched materials slid down almost to 10 meters deep. “It happened at around 7:30 p.m. As being persistently flushed by rain, the bridge suddenly avalanched,” said Headman of Bangli, Nyoman Rastawa, when met at the avalanche location, Tuesday (May 28). The length of avalanched bridge reached 20 meters with a width of 2 meters. According to Rastawa, the bridge had been old enough. It was estimated to have been almost 40 years old. Allegedly, since it was often eroded by floods, the land beneath the bridge was unstable so that kindled avalanche. As a result of this incident, local villagers could not drive car to transport their vegetable crops. Instead, they have to turn back
around 7 miles when wishing to drive a car to Baturiti and vice versa. “For the time being, the economy of resident is paralyzed. They cannot transport vegetables by car,” he complained. Residents could only pass on by motorbike on the remaining asphalt that had not collapsed. They should be careful because the avalanched land looked unstable. People worried if it would also be followed by subsequent avalanche and the path ultimately totally broke off. To avoid casualties, residents put up a bamboo barrier along the avalanched path. A caution sign was also installed at two closest points to the avalanche site. According to Rastawa, the avalanched path was the main road section for his residents wishing to go to Bedugul and Buleleng. The path also had busy traffic of tourists from Jatiluwih to Bedugul and vice versa. “Now, tourism activity really paralyzes
because they have switched to another path,” he explained. This newly inaugurated headman hoped the avalanched path could be fixed soon so that the plantation activity of residents could return to normal. Meanwhile, the subdistrict head of Baturiti, Putu Adi Supraja, asserted the avalanche had been reviewed by the Tabanan Public Works and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). In other words, the local government would soon take immediate measures to resolve it. “Earlier (Tuesday—Ed), the Public Works and Regional Disaster Management Agency officers had inspected and made data collection to location. According to Ferry, PD Parkir in this case was the authority developing and managing the parking service at the area of Sanglah Hospital. “We as the management of Sanglah Hospital hand over the land to be developed and managed by PD Parkir. So, the facility development must be the responsibility of PD Parkir,” said Ferry If the entrance gates had been built, the employees of Sanglah Hospital that frequently broke into the parking lot could surely be sorted and directed to the rear parking area. “If they insist on parking in front, of course, they have to pay and can no longer break into,” said Ferry. If the making of entrance gates could not overcome the parking problem, Sanglah Hospital already had a medium-term plan expected to be realized by the management. “Our medium-term plan is to add a parking lot by using the existing vacant land area,” said Ferry. Currently the parking lot at Sanglah Hospital could only hold 210 cars and approximately 1,800 units of motorcycle. “If the additional slot is carried out, the car parking space can hold 435 units,” said Ferry. If the additional slots would be unable to accommodate, then it would be applied the third alternative, namely the hourly basis parking system. With the hourly system, people were expected to become more aware so that they would not park their vehicle for a long time at Sanglah Hospital. Denpasar municipality makes coordination with the Badung and Gianyar government to address flooding problems caused by climate change happening right now. It is based on consideration that Denpasar is located amidst the two counties.
Regional Secretary of Denpasar Municipality, AAN Rai Iswara, said there were some flooding problems in Denpasar whose handling required coordination across the counties and municipality and national level. For instance, the Muding Creek was the tributary of Mati River emptying into the Umadui moving dam. “There are some problems regarding narrow grooves due to winding residential development, and the watershed of Muding Creek that have not been entirely protected with levees, and silting at Mati River,” said Rai Iswara in Denpasar, Tuesday (May 28). To that end, Rai Iswara expected that people around the area should make coordination with the Integrated Licensing Office
and Denpasar Investment Board before carrying out any residential development. By that way, the borders of streams and drainage could be known in relation to the building construction that could later on have an impact on the feasibility of settlement. “Arrangement of the Muding Creek area can be carried out together with the Badung, Denpasar, Bali Province and Working Unit of the Development of Settlement Environmental Sanitation (P2LP) Bali. It also includes the handling of flood at the area of Bumi Ayu, Sanur,” he said. Meanwhile, related to the handling of floods at Muding Creek, Wayan Budiarsa from the Working Unit of the P2LP Bali said his party had carried out observation

However, there were some problems related to levee on Jalan Tangkuban Perahu where it still required land acquisition from the owners. “It should be coordinated with the National Highway Agency considering the handling goes through Jalan Teuku Umar Barat,” he said. Similarly, Budiarsa added the handling of floods at Bumi Ayu could only be performed by pumping. On that account, he would propose to central government, while the Denpasar municipality was expected to provide land for location of the water pump, and it could be coordinated with the National Highway Agency. KAFR KILA, Lebanon — The giant posters of Hezbollah fighters killed in Lebanon’s wars with Israel still dot the picturesque landscape of southern Lebanon, the few remaining reminders of some of the epic battles that once made the Shiite guerrilla group and its leader Hassan Nasrallah heroes in the Arab world. Nowadays, they are overshadowed by fresh portraits of Hezbollah fighters who have died fighting fellow Muslims in the civil war in neighboring Syria. It’s a striking transformation and a strategic shift for the fiercely antiIsrael group, one that some of its most loyal supporters in the Shiite community may be reluctant to embrace. Hezbollah’s very public and bloody foray fighting alongside President Bashar Assad’s regime against rebels in Syria’s 2-year-old civil war has a steep price. It has emboldened the group’s critics in the Arab world and its Western-backed political opponents in Lebanon. It also risks wrecking the group’s already eroding image among many Lebanese as their champion and protector against Israel, which it drove out of southern Lebanon in 2000 and fought to a standstill in 2006. Also, by linking its fate to the Assad
regime’s survival and declaring war on Syria’s mainly Sunni rebels, Hezbollah also could bring the war directly into Lebanon. Its stance threatens to spark retaliation from Lebanese Sunnis supporting their Syrian brethren or from the rebels themselves carrying out attacks against the Shiite group on its home turf in Lebanon. Recent rocket fire against a pro-Hezbollah neighborhood of Beirut underlined the threat of violence spreading. Hezbollah, which was founded in 1982 with Iranian support to fight Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, has not carried out a single known rocket attack into Israel since the 2006 war. Many among the group’s Shiite constituency — about a third of the population — are tired of wars and even the most ideologically committed to Hezbollah’s anti-Israel rhetoric are reluctant to see their villages destroyed again. Now, as more of their men return
home in coffins from Syria, the group faces an uphill battle in trying to convince their countrymen that the war in Syria is part of their wider battle against Israel and its U.S. backers. “If Israel comes back to Lebanon, I will be the first volunteer to go on the battlefield,” said Ahmad Taleb, a 37year-old Shiite from the Aaita border village, where Hezbollah’s killing of Israeli soldiers triggered the 2006 war. Taleb spent 11 years in an Israeli jail during the country’s 18-year occupation of south Lebanon, which ended in 2000. As for heeding the call to fight in Syria, Taleb was reluctant. “I will not volunteer, but I will go if the party tells me to,” he said. In a weekend speech marking the anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, Nasrallah sought to portray the fight in Syria alongside Assad’s army as an existential war aimed at protecting Lebanon.

LONDON - Activists calling themselves Anonymous UK have posted on the Internet what they say are personal details of members of the English Defence League (EDL), a far-right group that has led an anti-Muslim backlash after a killing in London last week. The EDL has staged protests and skirmished with police since soldier Lee Rigby was hacked to death in a London street last Wednesday by two men who said the killing was in retaliation for the deaths of Muslims at the hands of British forces abroad. Police shot and wounded the attackers, both Britons of Nigerian descent, at the scene of the crime. One, Michael Adebolajo, is still in hospital under armed guard while the other, Michael Adebowale, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday and will be questioned by police on Wednesday. Rigby’s killing galvanized the small but vocal EDL, which organized a march through central London on Monday during which about 1,000 people chanted slogans such as “Muslim killers off our streets”. Four EDL supporters who were arrested during that march have been charged with various offences. In response to these events, Anonymous UK posted late on Tuesday what it described as a “mass data leak” including names, mobile telephone numbers and addresses of EDL members and donors, as well as what purported to be details about past convictions of some of the people listed. The name Anonymous UK suggested that the person or people behind the post were part of the loosely organized international “hacktivist” collective Anonymous, which has taken credit for attacks on a variety of targets including the CIA. Anonymous UK had earlier on Tuesday posted a video message on YouTube threatening the EDL with the “systematic and comprehensive dessication of your cult”. The message, posted under the user name “IWill Object”, condemned Rigby’s killing and accused the EDL of exploiting the murder to spread hatred. “You ... have used this as another excuse to further spread your campaign of hate, bigotry and misinformation,” it said. “Under the guise of national pride you have instigated crimes against the innocent and incited the subjugation of Muslims”. The EDL could not immediately be reached for comment. Rigby’s killing, as well as the EDL’s response to it, have been widely condemned across the political and religious spectrum in Britain and there have been countless calls for unity and solidarity among all Britons. Adebolajo’s family condemned the attack as senseless on Tuesday and said they felt ashamed and horrified.

Commercial human ventures planned for the moon: NASA study Reuters
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida - Corporate researchers may be living on the moon by the time NASA astronauts head off to visit an asteroid in the 2020s, a study of future human missions unveiled on Thursday shows. The study by Bigelow Aerospace, commissioned by NASA, shows “a lot of excitement and interest from various companies” for such ventures, said Robert Bigelow, founder and president of the Las Vegas-based firm. The projects range from pharmaceutical research aboard Earthorbiting habitats, to missions to the moon’s surface, he said on Thursday, citing a draft of the report due to be released in a few weeks. NASA intends to follow the International Space Station program with astronaut visits to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars about a decade later. President Barack Obama’s proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning October 1 requests $105 million for the U.S. space agency to begin work on a mission to find a small asteroid and reposition it around the moon for a future visit by astronauts.
But private companies, including Bigelow Aerospace, have more interest in the moon itself, Bigelow told reporters on a conference call on Thursday. William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s head of space operations, said on the call “it’s important for us to know that there’s some interest in moon activity and lunar surface activity.” “We can take advantage of what the private sector is doing” in areas such as space transportation, life support systems and other technologies needed for travel beyond the space station’s 250 mile high orbit, he noted. NASA typically completes its mission planning before looking at what partnerships and collaborations may be possible, Gerstenmaier added. “We thought that this time we would kind of turn that around a little bit, that we would ask industry first what they’re interested in

Researchers discovered that running rats are constantly moving their eyes in opposite directions, side to side and up and down, which lets them keep a permanent watch for predatory birds that might be hovering in the air. Both our eyes move together and always follow the same object,” study researcher Jason Kerr from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics said in a statement. “In rats, on the other hand, the eyes generally move in opposite directions,” Kerr explained. Kerr and colleagues attached tiny cameras to the rats’ heads to record their speedy eye movements while running. The direction of the rats’ right eye and left eye changed depending on the animals’ head position, the researchers found. “When the head points downward, the eyes move back, away from the tip of the nose,” Kerr said. “When the rat lifts its head, the eyes look forward: cross-eyed, so to speak. If the animal puts its head on one side, the eye on the lower side moves up and the other eye moves down.” These opposing eye movements mean a rat’s line of vision can vary widely — by as much as 40 degrees in the horizontal plane and up to 60 degrees in the vertical plane, the researchers said. What’s more, the divergent movements mean rats can’t fuse the visual information entering each eye into a single image like humans can. But having googly eyes comes with a big advantage for rats: It allows them to keep the space above in view all the time, simultaneously by both eyes. This does not occur in any other region of the rat’s visual field, the researchers said. The team thinks this ability is an adaptation to look out for threats from the air, since many species of predatory birds feast on rats.
Medieval Readers Had Eclectic Tastes
Nowadays, people bounce effortlessly from reading news to blogs to email. And it turns out the reading habits of people in medieval times weren’t so different, a new book suggests. People in 14th-century London consumed a variety of texts, often linked together in bound volumes. Arthur Bahr, a literature professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explores these habits in his new book “Fragments and Assemblages” (University of Chicago Press, 2013). “Medieval manuscripts usually survive as fragments, and at the same time, they are also very often assemblages of multiple, disparate works,” Bahr told MIT news. The interesting question is why these works were grouped together in that way, Bahr said. The printing press hadn’t yet been invented, so people copied manuscripts by hand and bound them together, often including many different kinds of text in a single volume. [Image Gallery: Medieval Art Tells a Tale] For example, the chamberlain for the city of London in the 1320s, Andrew Horn, possessed bound manuscripts that contained a mixture of legal treatises, French poetry and descriptions of London, among other things. But Horn’s bound manuscripts weren’t just a random hodgepodge, Bahr said. Rather, Horn juxtaposed different texts to create “literary puzzles” for the reader. Placing poems next to legal documents portrayed law and literature as a kind of yin and yang, Bahr said.

It happened because the investor PT GEB and China Hudian Engineering Corporation (CHEC) being responsible for the project had yet completed the licenses required by Buleleng government. Information collected in the field on Tuesday (May 28) mentioned if the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana issued a reprimand to PT GEB and CHEC. Through the letter No. 648/1401/Ekbang dated on April 19, 2013 the regent highlighted five points to stop the mega project. Firstly, the investor had not presented the company profile, documents of the environmental impact assessment (Amdal), layout, time schedule and the license issued by the central government and local government. Additionally, the regent pointed out if the promise of investor to hold a presentation regarding the matter of formal juridical matter after the last Chinese New Year had not been fulfilled. In response to such condition, the regent firmly took a measure to stop the project. The letter was sent to investor PT GEB addressed to Tjandra Limanjaya and also forwarded to Governor of Bali, the Bali Environment Agency (BLH), Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Chairman of Buleleng House and several other key officials. Copy of the letter forwarded to the House was immediately responded.
Related to issuance of the reprimand, the House held an audience (RDP) with the executive and investor PT GEB and CHEC on Tuesday. It was chaired of the Acting Chairman of Buleleng House, Gede Supriyatna, and attended by chairman of the commission and the members. In the audience was revealed if the request of the regent to investor to stop the activities had been responded by the investor PT. GEB and CHEC. However, the companies denied if they just received the letter early in May 2013, while the letter was dated April 19, 2013. Responding to the reprimand to stop the activities, Field Coordinator of PT GEB, Egon Wisjnu S, was not willing to give some comments. He said the data requested by county government had already been prepared. The data ranged from company profile, layout, and presentation of the environment impact assessment. However, presentation of the requested data was still looking for the right time. His party promised to submit the data no later than ten days after meeting with the Buleleng House. Indonesia can no longer just expect fuel to maintain the energy security. Sooner or later, our fuel must follow international prices. In other words, the fuel subsidy will be revoke by degrees. To that end, the government will maximize the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Susilo Siswoutomo, said in the upcoming decade the demand for liquefied natural gas would be soaring. According to projection made by global consultant Wood Mackenzie, in 2025 India would record the growth in LNG demand at 20 million tons. “Conversion program from fuel to gas will also encourage the future gas consumption. In 2020, it is estimated that approximately 50 percent of fuel needs in Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan can be converted to gas,” said Susilo in Legian, Tuesday (May 28). He explained the LNG demand was estimated to keep on rising in domestic market in 2020 as driven by surging needs of various sectors. They included the state-owned power plant (PLN) and demand from the industry such as fertilizer, metal, ceramic, paper, glass and food industries. “Bali region does not too much need gas. At least, it is only required
to meet the needs of Gilimanuk and Pemaron gas-fired power plant.At the moment, our party is thinking of installing undersea transmission aiming to supply gas to Bali,” he said. He explained that government was also exploring the possibility of utilizing LNG to power marine vessel. This measure could increase more opportunities. In terms of supply, the prospect of national LNG industry was strongly supported by the amount of natural gas resources owned. Based on geological estimation, the amount of oil and gas resources lay in 60 basins on land and offshore consisting of approximately 70 billion barrels (bbls) of petroleum and 330 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas. Meanwhile, the amount of reserves that could be produced with the current economic and technology condition approximately reached 5 bbls of petroleum and 92 tcf of natural gas. “The opportunities are widely open because the demand and supply are not linear,” he said.
It was mentioned the total gas demand for industry in 2013 reached 2,491 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd). However, the supply could just be met as much as 1,913 mmscfd. Only East Java could meet its own supply. The supply in the region reached 854 mmscfd, while its demand only came to 717 mmscfd. “West Java and Central Java will remain lack of gas supply up to 578 mmscfd. The gas supply for West Java can just be met as much as 1,026 mmscfd, while the total demand comes to 1,704 mmscfd. Then, Central Java can meet 33 mmscfd from the total demand of 71 mmscfd,” he explained. He estimated that gas demand in Java in 2020 would reach 3,388 mmscfd, while based on the existing contract it could only be supplied as much as 1,680 mmscfd. Position of the gas supply to East Java remained excessive up to 2020, while West Java and Central Java stayed to show a deficit. (kmb27)

Traders of foreign exchange urged Bank Indonesia to revoke the Circular No.15/3/DPM. The rule issued on May 1, 2013 was considered burdensome because it required the foreign exchange traders to include the underlying documents in any dollar purchase at banks. “Bank Indonesia must revoke the circular because this industry has gone through a pretty strict rule, especially of the Center for Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis (PPTAK),” said Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Association of Foreign Exchange Traders, Ayu Astuti D, Tuesday (May 28). She said that foreign exchange businesses always included the underlying document in the transaction with particular provisions. Besides, it also kept tracking the origin of foreign exchange and who exchanged the money. “This requirement is considered burdensome by the traders and the community or companies wishing to buy foreign currency,” she said. Nevertheless, the condition in Bali, said Ayu, was not too difficult after the issuance of the circular. All foreign exchange traders in Bali were relatively easy to get dollars in physical form. However, this condition did not apply in other regions. Foreign exchange industry in Bali was benefited by the number of tourists coming to Bali. “The currency transaction by 121 members remains relatively in large amount. Thus, we do not have problems to get dollars,” she said. Other than asking for Bank Indonesia to revoke the circular No.15/3/ DPM, her party also encouraged Bank Indonesia to revise the Regulation of Bank Indonesia No. 12/22/PBI/2010 about Foreign Exchange Traders and classify the foreign exchange traders having got an official license from central bank in order to improve the governance of foreign exchange trading industry. “Aside from harming consumers by reducing the appraisal of the exchanged money, the illegal money changer companies also have the potential to become one of the money laundering. Financial report of the companies is also very difficult to be tracked. They seriously harm the image of licensed companies,” she explained. Based on data of the APVA Bali in 2012, said Astuti, approximately 40 percent of the total foreign exchange companies or money changers operating in Bali did not have business license in the field of currency trading. “A lot of those companies have closed due to having no permit from Bank Indonesia,” she said. Ayu explained the rampant illegal foreign exchange companies had happened since few years ago, but so far there had been no follow-up. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

In an unusual collaboration, the Internet giant was closely involved with the film, a $58 million Fox production which features two middle-aged watch salesmen who are determined to get a job at Google. Amidst the comedic hijinks, the film indeed delivers a picture of a kind and gentle Google, a company that offers free food and exercise classes and is in every respect the place you’d like to work. Various Google products get plugs in the film, and co-founder Sergey Brin gets a cameo role. The favorable PR comes at an opportune moment for Google, whose unofficial motto is “Don’t Be Evil” but which is often portrayed in far darker tones by privacy advocates, antitrust regulators and competitors such as Microsoft. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recently began exploring a new set of antitrust allegations against the company, sources told Reuters last week. “It’s a good move. It’s going to
enhance and warm up Google’s image perception,” said former Coca Cola chief marketing officer Peter Sealey, who is an adjunct professor at Claremont Graduate University and worked as a consultant for Google seven years ago. The movie is a far cry from the Hollywood experience of rival Facebook.
