MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin could meet British singer Elton John when he visits Russia in May if room can be found in the two men’s schedules, the Kremlin said on Monday. Putin telephoned Elton John in September to say he would be ready to meet for a chat after the entertainer requested a meeting to discuss his concerns about gay rights in Russia. “When they spoke by telephone several months ago, they agreed ... they will meet during Elton John’s stay in Moscow,” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a teleconference with journalists.
“Such a meeting cannot be excluded, if there are precise dates of his (John’s) stay here and if the president’s working schedule allows it,” he said without elaborating. John, 69, is set to give a concert in a high-end Moscow shopping and entertainment centre on May 30 as part of his world tour. Before going to Moscow, he is expected to give a concert at an
ice palace in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city and Putin’s birthplace. Western states and human rights activists have criticised Russia for its treatment of gay people, and John has previously spoken out against a 2013 law banning the dissemination of “gay propaganda” among young people. Putin has said he is not prejudiced against gay people. Russian online booking sites are selling tickets for John’s concert in Moscow at prices reaching 88,000 roubles ($1,287) per seat. (rtr)
GAINESVILLE — Entertainer Katt Williams and a teenager have each been charged with disorderly conduct after fighting each other at an apartment complex, police in metro Atlanta said Monday. Williams, 44, and Luke Wash, 17, were both charged in connection with the fight last week, Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said Monday. He added that Wash is also charged as an adult in the case. Officials have said Williams made a threat Feb. 28 while an acquaintance beat the bodyguard with a baseball bat and choked him. Woody Allen’s ‘Cafe Society’ to open Cannes Film Festival PARIS — Woody Allen’s latest film, “Cafe Society,” will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Programmers say the movie, starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, will have its red-carpet premiere at the French Riviera festival on May 11. Blake Lively, Parker Posey and Steve Carrell also appear in the film, set in Hollywood in the 1930s.
Tuesday’s announcement confirms Cannes’ love affair with the 81-year-old American director. It’s Allen’s third film to open the festival, after “Hollywood Ending” in 2002 and “Midnight in Paris” in 2011. “Cafe Society” is not in competition for the Palme D’Or and other prizes, to be awarded by a jury headed by “Mad Max” director George Miller.

More Than 5,000 Arrested Over Pakistan Blast
Lahore - More than 5,000 people have been arrested following Sunday’s suicide bombing in Pakistan, a provincial minister has said. Seventy-three people were killed and hundreds more injured in the blast in Lahore. Many of the victims were children. Of the thousands arrested, around 200 people remain in custody. “More than 5,000 people were searched and interrogated and most of them were allowed to go, but some 216 have been apprehended for further investigations,” Rana Sanaullah told reporters. The bombs went off near a children’s play area in the park on Sunday afternoon as families were out enjoying the warm day. The attack was claimed by the Jamaat-ulAhrar faction of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The militants have since sent a taunting tweet to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, saying war has “reached his doorstep”. Ehansullah Ehsan, spokesman for the Jamaatul-Ahrar, tweeted: “After the Lahore attack, Nawaz Sharif repeated old words to give himself false assurances. “Nawaz Sharif should know that war has reached his doorstep, and God willing the mujahideen will be the winners in this war.”

Today there are 2,666 people in Bali known to be suffering from HIV/AIDS. Based on WHO estimates this would indicate that there are in fact somewhere closer to 12, 473 people who are infected with the virus. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Bali is ranked fifth in Indonesia after Jakarta, West Java, East Java and Papua. Punia said that he is especially concerned about the situation because despite Bali’s population being approximately 3 million people, it is still ranked fifth in Indonesia. According to the Karangasem Health Agancy’s data, as of December 2015, there were hundreds of people in Karangasem who are known to be infected with HIV/ AIDS. There 143 people carrying
HIV/AIDS in the subdistrict of Karangasem, 98 in Kubu, 78 in Abang 56 in Manggis, 52 in Bebandem and 30 in Sidemen. When Punia was the head of the Sidemen Health Center, there were only 5 people known to be infected with HIV/AIDS. Allegedly the tourist area of Tebola greatly contributes to the spread of the virus because of the relatively large number of budget hotels and villas in the area where unprotected sexual activity may take place. In early February, a pregnant woman tested positive for HIV. “We’ll do what we can to prevent the baby from becoming infected with the virus. Perhaps a cesarean section will be required and the medical team will be informed about how to decrease the risk of passing infection onto the child” he said.

Punia emphasized that in order to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS it is important that intravenous drugs users not share needles because sharing needles is the second most common way that the disease is transmitted. In order to avoid transmission through sexual intercourse, married couples are advised to remain faithful and unmarried people are advised to keep their sexual partners to a minimum and to always use condoms when engaging in any form of sexual activity. He added that the use of illicit drugs and HIV/AIDS transmission often go hand in hand as many addicts will share infected needles with anywhere from two to five other people, thus increasing their risk of contracting the disease. “Say no to drug abuse. US hacks iPhone, ends legal battle but questions linger WASHINGTON — The extraordinary legal fight pitting the Obama administration against technology giant Apple Inc. ended unexpectedly after the FBI said it used a mysterious method without Apple’s help to hack into a California mass shooter’s iPhone. Left unanswered, however, were questions about how the sudden development would affect privacy in the future, and what happens the next time the government is frustrated by digital security lockout features. Government prosecutors asked a federal judge on Monday to vacate a disputed order forcing Apple to help the FBI break into the iPhone, saying it was no longer necessary. The FBI used the unspecified technique to access data on an iPhone used by gunman Syed Farook, who died with his wife in a gun battle with police after they killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, in December. The Justice Department said agents are now reviewing the information on the phone.
But the government’s brief court filing, in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, provided no details about how the FBI got into the phone. Nor did it identify the non-government “outside party” that showed agents how to get past the phone’s security defenses. Authorities had previously said only Apple had the ability to help them unlock the phone. Apple responded by saying it will continue to increase the security of its products. “We will continue to help law enforcement with their investigations, as we have done all along,” the company added in a statement, while reiterating its argument that the government’s demand for Apple’s help was wrong. “This case should never have
been brought,” the company said. FBI Assistant Director David Bowdich said Monday that examining the iPhone was part of the authorities’ effort to learn if the San Bernardino shooters had worked with others or had targeted any other victims. “I am satisfied that we have access to more answers than we did before,” he said in a statement. The dispute had ignited a fierce Internet-era national debate that pitted digital privacy rights against national security concerns and reinvigorated discussion over the impact of encryption on law enforcement’s ability to serve the public. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California, said in a statement that while it was “preferable” that the government gained access to the iPhone without Apple’s help, the fundamental question of the extent to which the government should be able to access personal information remains unanswered. WASHINGTON — As North Korea rattles its nuclear saber, threatening to bomb the U.S. at “any moment,” a nerve-jangling question hangs in the air: If Pyongyang did launch a nuclear-armed missile at an American city, could the Pentagon’s missile defenses overcome their spotty test record and shoot it down beyond U.S. shores? America has never faced such a real-life crisis, and although officials say they are confident the defenses would work as advertised, the Pentagon acknowledges potential gaps that North Korea or others might be able to exploit, someday if not immediately. One possible vulnerability involves a foe’s “countermeasures,” or decoys carried aboard long-range offensive missiles to fool a U.S. interceptor missile into hitting the wrong target. The Pentagon has poured at least $84 billion into missile defense over the past decade and is planning to spend another $3.3 billion over the next five years for a single element of the system, known as Ground-based Midcourse Defense, or GMD. Its key part is a network of interceptor missiles designed to launch from underground silos, fly into the path of an enemy missile as it arcs through space and smash into it, destroying it. That system has failed three of its last four intercept tests. The only success in that series was the most recent test, in June 2014. A congressional watchdog agency, the Government Accountability Office, said in February that the
Pentagon “has not demonstrated through flight testing that it can defend the U.S. homeland against the current missile defense threat.” Adm. William Gortney, America’s homeland defender as head of U.S. Northern Command, told Congress this month that the nation needs “more capable forces and broader options.” Key improvements are in the works, including a “long-range discrimination” radar for more effective tracking of incoming missiles. The North Koreans’ harsh rhetoric, including a threat in February to deal “fatal blows at the U.S. mainland any moment,” is linked in part to its anger at U.S.-South Korean military exercises, which the North sees as a rehearsal for an invasion. No one is predicting a bolt-outof-the-blue North Korean nuclear attack, but the threat looms larger as the North Koreans seemingly move closer to fielding a nuclear-armed missile that can reach U.S. territory. Already this year they have claimed a successful H-bomb test, put a satellite into space orbit and claimed a successful simulated test of the warhead re-entry knowhow needed for a missile strike on the United States. MANGUPURA - Road access to Hotel Canggu Intercontinental has been blocked with limestone, placed by residents of Canggu, North Kuta on March 20th in protest of the hotel’s alleged lack of respect for governing regulations. Chief of Canggu customary village, I Nyoman Sujapa, along with with a number of Canggu community leaders and subdistrict head of North Kuta, A.A. Yuyun Hanura Eny met with the Deputy Regent of Badung Ketut Suiasa on Monday (Mar. 28) and confirmed that Canggu customary village had received a legal notice from the hotel to cease and desist their road bloackade. Village Chief Sujapa explained that through the letter of attorney, Rudi Handani as Director of PT Canggu International, appointed Yudistira Association as his legal bureau. Based on the letter of attorney No. 036/SK/BJY/H/III’2016, the Yudistira Association legal bureau sent a letter of reprimand to the headman of Canggu. “We were sent a legal notice by the owner of the hotel, through the hotel’s legal bureau” he said. Sujana clarified that the letter or reprimand mentioned four points including that the blocking of access to PT Canggu International does not comply with procedures and was done without prior notice. Also, that due to the action of local residents, the company has suffered losses worth IDR 1 billion per day. Therefore, the company hopes that the road can be re-opened so as to avoid legal troubles. In the letter dated March 22, 2016 it is also mentioned that if the demand of the legal notice is not met, legal action

may be taken in the form of a civil and criminal lawsuit. The demand of the legal notice, has however not automatically been acquiesced to. Canggu Customary Village plans to first organize a meeting with customary leaders to determine their response to the letter. “We will first hold a village meeting to come up with a decision on the matter” explained the Chief of Canggu. Sujana added that “We hope that the government will immediately step in to help mediate between the hotel and the village”. In response to this issue, Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Suiasa, said that they are still looking into the how and why it is that the Canggu residents came to close access to hotel. “Once we have more information, we will invite members of the community and the owner of the hotel to discuss the matter”, he said. The blocking of the road access to Hotel Canggu International was based on the results of a previous meeting with the hotel and former chief of Canggu Customary Village I Wayan Suamba, in which the hotel was asked to: lower the L-gutter (breakwater) because it is too high, to adhere by the rules that require beach access to the temple, to re-measure the land to determine the exact limits of who owns what, and to dismantle the culvert that lays across the road. The hotel was given a deadline of March 20th to meet these demands. When Hotel Canggu Internatinoal did not have the goodwill to meet the demands of the villagers, the villagers blocked road access to the hotel. (kmb27)

MANGUPURA - Businesses that depend on weather condition are very vulnerable to the rising and falling prices of raw materials. Roof tile businesses additionally rely on weather conditions in their production process. Owner of UD Jinar, explained that their production of 700 tiles a days requires that the tiles dry on the sun for a couple of days. “We fire our tiles once a month, and if all goes well, we can produce up to 10,000 tiles per month” said Mrs. Jinar on Friday (Mar 25). Because UD Jinar uses the traditional method of burning firewood, the drying process is very important to avoide cracking tiles. If the weather is good and the tiles dry well, the price of smallsized roof tile is IDR 1,300 and IDR 1,600 for the large size. But in rainy season, the price of roof tile rises from IDR 200-IDR 300 to IDR 1,500-IDR 1,800. On average, a small house requires 1,000 roof tiles, while a big house requires 5,000 pieces. “The price also depends on the cost of the raw materials. The standard price is IDR 1,300 but it can go up to goes up to IDR 1,500 -- IDR1,800” she said. The raw clay used in making these tiles comes from nearby Tegal Darmasaba, but UD. Jinar purchases ready-to-use clay, so that
only pressing, drying and firing is all that is required. Very little of this ready to use clay is produced, however, so sometimes Mrs. Jinar’s business falters. Because of the limited availability of the raw materials, the amount that can be ordered everyday is uncertain she explained, adding that roof tile entrepreneurs tend to order quite large amounts. “Few people produce clay materials, while we need large amounts” she said. This business that Mrs. Jinar started in 2000, involves two tile makers. Mrs. Jinar herself does not have experience making tiles, so she relies on her two employees
and the skills that they brought to the company. Currently the demand for roof tiles is unstable. “The demand for tiles is not like it was in the past when people would build in certain months and so we could rely on orders at certain times of the year. Now we lack orders, perhaps it is due to economic conditions” she said adding that tight competition makes things even harder. UD. Jinar, gets most of their orders from foreigners who are building in Bali or elsewhere like Yogyakarta and sometimes her tiles are even exported to Japan or Australia. “Those orders are usually dealt with by cargo companies”, she explained. Mrs. Jinar added that foreigners are interested in purchasing roof tiles from Bali because they are unique and distinctive. “Balinese roof tile ornaments are more sought after”, she said. UD. Jinar makes both Balinese and non-Balinese roof tiles. “The special shape of Balinese roof tiles are very recognizable”, she added. (kmb42)

SINGARAJA - Balinese cultural preservation initiated by the government of Buleleng district through the Culture and Tourism Agency by holding the competition of pesantian or psalmody with the participants of nine troupes from across the subdistricts in Buleleng in a series with the 412th anniversary of Singaraja town. Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, said that the competition of psalmody held by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency can build the character and mental of younger generation to prefer it. Each sloka (couplet in Sanskrit verse) contains philosophical values that can be studied by younger generation, so that later on it can become a role model in life. “Hopefully, the competition of psalmody for our younger generation can make them closer to preservation of culture, religion and customs. It becomes one of the moments to keep their existence, character and mental. I am proud because they can participate in the competition and the slokas contain many philosophical values,” he said, Monday (Mar. 28), at Graha Lakshmi Hall, Singaraja. Certainly we need to preserve Balinese culture in the life of children and teenager leading to modernity or post-modernity. Preservation of indigenous culture through competition of psalmody is very important,” he added. with a length of two meters by one meter and a square-shaped box with a size of two meters. “We estimate the pile of rocks is temple foundation or pertirtaan because it is quadrangular. Next year, we will continue with the reconstruction, so that they can describe the actual shape,” said Made Suarbhawa, when met on Monday (Mar. 28). Findings of the rocks predicted as temple foundation originating in the fourteenth century is a continuation. In previous studies, the institute has managed to find an assortment of statues, perforated coins, sarcophagus and a pile of rocks at different locations. He explained the institute found the composition of rocks protruding from the bottom of the temple building. The second box is right at the eastern side of gedong arca or next to the temple compound wall. Well, in the rectangular box is also found hundreds of neatly arranged bricks. Then, in the last excavation in the eastern side of the temple or exactly beside the compound wall was found a mound of rocks. In this third excavation is found lot of rocks in broken condition.
“Many foundations are not intact. Probably they were taken by local people for the construction of compound wall in 1986,” said Made Suarbhawa accompanied by the Gelang Agung Research Team Leader, A.A. Gede Oka Astawa. As reported, the archaeological heritage sites in the innermost courtyard of the Gelang Agung Temple is predicted to be a temple or sanctum belonging to the last Balinese kingdom ruled by Sri Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten whose palace sat at Bedahulu (now, Bedulu village), Gianyar. It is proved by the heritages in the form of some statues like phallus, garuda of Vishnu, Ganesha, nandini bull and rooftops with ornament resembling the heritages of the fourteenth century. According to the archaeologist who is also the Gelang Agung Research Team Leader, A.A. Gede Agung Oka Astawa, the Gelang Agung site can almost be ensured if it is a sanctum originating from the fourteenth century. To research the sites buried in this temple, the archaeologists have made excavation at a number of points in the innermost and outermost courtyard of the Gelang Agung
Temple since 2013. As a result, in 2013 the archaeologists found the foundation and structure in the eastern side of the innermost courtyard. Other than finding a pile of older rocks, at that time the archaeologists also discovered hundreds of perforated coins and potteries buried in the area. Previously, local residents already found statues scattered under frangipani trees in the temple innermost courtyard (uttama mandala). In the second study made in 2014, the archaeologists found hundreds of piles of rocks at different points exactly in the north of the compound wall of the innermost courtyard estimated to be the structure of the temple. In the study taking place on November 12-21, 2015, the archaeologists assisted by local residents found again the structure of ancient temple. Pile of rocks was found in the northern part of the innermost courtyard. Neat rock stack of 0.5 meter deep in the ground is estimated to be the connecting parts of the building structure found in 2014. This argument is supported by the pile of rocks sits next to the findings as the results of research in 2014. (kmb27)
Thein Sein announced the move in state media on Tuesday, a day before a president from Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) will be sworn in at an official handover, after the NLD won the Nov. 8 election by a landslide. While there have been no major clashes in Rakhine in the last two years, most of Myanmar’s 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims remain stateless and live in apartheid-like conditions. They are denied citizenship and have long complained of state-sanctioned discrimination. “It is found from the report by the Rakhine state government that the situation in Rakhine state can no longer pose dangers to the lives and property of the people,” said the ordinance signed by Thein Sein. Myanmar has denied discriminating against the group. It does not recognise the Rohingya as an ethnic minority and instead classifies them as Bengalis. Most Rohingya reject the term and many families have lived in Rakhine for generations. Rohingya were denied participation - both as voters and as
candidates - in the November vote. Before the elections, religious tensions were high, with the NLD deciding not to field a single Muslim candidate on its lists of more than 1,100 hopefuls. The Rohingya are widely disliked in Myanmar, where they are seen as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh - including by some in Suu Kyi’s party. She risks haemorrhaging support by taking up their cause. Tensions are rising between the NLD and the Rakhine-based Arakan National Party (ANP), one of Myanmar’s most vocal ethnic parties. ANP lawmakers walked out of the regional parliament on Monday wearing black stickers on their jackets, because the NLD denied them the position of the chief minister of the state. Still, lack of fighting means that some 25,000 Rohingya Muslims have left camps for displaced people and returned to the communities, the United Nations said last week, with the number of people in camps down to around 120,000 from 145,000. The OAB added the controversial appointment last week to Rousseff’s Cabinet of her predecessor and mentor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which the lawyers argued was an illegal move to shield him from prosecution in the Petrobras graft probe. SACRAMENTO — A political deal to raise California’s minimum wage to a nation-leading $15 an hour could help some workers cope with the state’s crushing cost of living but also deprive other low-wage earners of jobs altogether, economists said Monday as Gov. Jerry Brown and other leaders touted what would be a landmark agreement. California’s economy is larger than that of most countries, with a wide diversity of earners. While newly minted millionaires gentrify neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area, some Central Valley field hands lack access to clean water. A jump from the current $10 an hour spread over six years would affect millions. Rafael Gutierrez, a 53-year-old farmworker, said the increase would let him treat his family to weekend dinners out and a short vacation to Disneyland from his home in Fresno County. His last job picking peaches and grapes paid $11 an hour. His girlfriend makes $14 an hour at Target. Though their region is far from California’s costliest, “Right now, we’re just making it,” Gutierrez said. “Life is expensive.” And then there are employers such as Chuck Herrin, owner of Sunrise Farm Labor, which provides roughly 2,500 workers each year in the San Joaquin Valley. Herrin predicted that farmers would hire 10 percent fewer workers because of the higher cost of business. “It’s going to be devastating,” said Herrin of the impact on fieldworkers and their dependent relatives. On Monday, Brown touted the deal his administration struck with legislative and labor leaders as potentially historic, calling it a matter of economic justice. Under the proposal, which the Legislature has yet to approve, the minimum wage would rise gradually, reaching $15 by 2022. After that wages would rise with inflation, though in tough economic times the governor could delay increases. Lawmakers could send the bill to Brown’s desk as early as Thursday, said Sen. Mark Leno, a San Francisco Democrat. The hike would create the nation’s highest statewide minimum wage. California and Massachusetts are the current highest at $10. Washington, D.C., stands at $10.50. Oregon’s governor signed legislation this year that would raise wages by 2022 depending on location. A federal judge in the U.S. island territory ruled that a modified tangible-property tax is invalid. The ruling was issued as Puerto Rico’s government rushes to find new sources of revenue and a debt restructuring mechanism from the U.S. Congress while struggling through a decade-long economic crisis. Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla said his government will appeal the decision. “The judge just took away $100 million from the people of Puerto Rico and gave it to Walmart,” he said, referring to the revenue the tax would have generated this fiscal year for the U.S. territory. “Now I have to look for that money somewhere else. Of course I’m
going to appeal the decision, and immediately.” Legislators echoed his sentiments, pledging to approve a new bill to obtain a portion of the revenue generated by retail giants across the island. Walmart is Puerto Rico’s largest private employer, with more than 14,000 workers, and argued in a lawsuit filed in December that the tax was unconstitutional. Federal Judge Jose Antonio Fuste agreed in his 109-page ruling and said the island’s treasury secretary must immediately stop levying, collecting and enforcing the tax. He noted Puerto Rico legislators had increased the tax by 325 percent in May 2015 during what he called a
brisk approval process so they could capture revenues from Walmart. The 6.5 percent tax would have applied to every piece of inventory Walmart received for its stores even if it wasn’t able to sell it, Fuste said. He said that if the tax were to remain in effect, it would generate more than $40 million in “unconstitutional taxes ... to an insolvent government without any hope that the victimized taxpayers will be reimbursed in the foreseeable future. That is the very definition of an inadequate remedy,” he wrote, adding that $10 million of that revenue would have been from Walmart alone. The ruling comes as Walmart prepares to close seven stores in Puerto Rico as part of a plan to shutter 269 stores worldwide.(ap)
The minister remarked that a military patrol boat had been readied to anticipate accidents. However, Ryacudu noted that the military could not conduct any operations in the Philippines without obtaining prior permission from the authorities. The minister affirmed that the hijacking of the Indonesian vessel was different from the piracy in Somalia. Ryacudu has coordinated with his Philippine counterpart over the piracy issue. “Indonesia continues to monitor the developments in the hostage situation,” the minister remarked. According to national media, the Indonesian Embassy in Manila has confirmed that an Indonesian vessel was hijacked in the Philippines, and 10 Indonesian crewmen were taken hostage. Embassy spokesperson Basriana could not confirm whether Abu Sayyaf militants, a group of Islamic extremists, were behind the hijacking of the Indonesian vessel. The embassy continues to coordinate with the Indonesian Consulate General in Davao and other relevant authorities in the Philippines to gather more information on the situation.(ant)

BENGKULU - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked the eastern part of Bengkulu province on Tuesday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said. The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 01.24 p,m. local time was located 22 kilometers northwest of Lebong, Bengkulu, at a depth of 128 kilometers, the agency said in its official website. “Most residents of Bengkulu city felt the earthquake for a while,” Head of the Observation and Information Section of the BMKG Office in Bengkulu Sudiyanto said. EgyptAir plane hijacked to Cyprus, most passengers freed
CAIRO - An EgyptAir plane flying from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and forced to land in Cyprus on Tuesday by a man Cypriot state media said was demanding the release of women prisoners in Egypt. After the aircraft landed at Larnaca airport, the hijacker released everyone onboard except three passengers and four crew following negotiations, Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said. He declined to give their nationalities. Eighty-one people, including 21 foreigners and 15 crew, had been onboard the Airbus 320, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement. The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and a private broadcaster, Antenna, said the hijacker was asking for the release of women prisoners in Egypt, suggesting a political motive. He had also asked to get in touch with European Union officials, CyBC reported, citing a letter the hijacker dropped onto the apron at Larnaca airport. The plane remained on the tarmac at Laranca throughout the morning while Cypriot security forces took up positions around the scene. Security sources in Egypt said a separate New York-bound flight from Cairo was delayed due to security fears related to the hijacking. They gave no more details. While the reasons for the hi-
jacking were not entirely clear, the incident will deal another blow to Egypt’s tourism industry and hurt efforts to revive an economy hammered by political unrest following the 2011 uprising. The sector, a main source of hard currency, was already reeling from the crash of a Russian passenger plane in the Sinai in late October. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said it was brought down by a terrorist attack. Islamic State has said it planted a bomb on board, killing all 224 people on board. Taliban faction taunts Pakistan PM after Easter Day bombing ISLAMABAD - The Pakistani militants who bombed a Lahore park on Easter Sunday, killing 70 people, taunted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday, declaring their war had come to his doorstep. The military has said it is hunting the Taliban’s Jamaat-urAhrar faction and has carried out several raids since the suicide bombing, but neither the military nor the government has given any details. BRUSSELS - The Association of Professional Cyclists (CPA) wants an urgent investigation into the death of Belgian Antoine Demoitie at the Gent-Wevelgem classic race over the weekend. Demoitie’s Wanty-Gobert team said the rider was hit by a motorbike following a fall during a section of the race in northern France on Sunday and the 25-year-old died in hospital. “The CPA and all the riders
demand that light is shed on the accident immediately and the circumstances that caused it,” the association said in a statement on Monday. CPA president Gianni Bugno, who won the world road race title
in 1991 and 1992, said it was a time of “sadness and sorrow”. “We do not want to make controversy but we have so much frustration inside,” added the Italian. “We have always stated that the safety of the riders must come first. “I do not want to accuse anyone but make everyone reflect on the responsibility we have to ensure that a very high level of attention and awareness is maintained plus
control over safety standards during each race,” Bugno said. Demoitie was appearing in his second world tour race, having made his first appearance in the E3 Harelbeke event in Belgium earlier in the week. The sport’s governing body, the UCI, said it would work with the relevant authorities looking into his death. “The UCI is extremely sad-

MIAMI - Andy Murray, accustomed to going deep into the Miami Open, was derailed in the third round on Monday, falling 6-7(1) 6-4 6-3 to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The Scotsman might have sensed trouble was in the air at Crandon Park after the opening two matches on Stadium court ended in shock results with women’s world number one Serena Williams and number two Agnieszka Radwanska both upset victims. “To be honest, I just played better in the big moments today,” Dimitrov told reporters. “I had quite a few opportunities and I used them. “Even though I lost the first set, I kept good composure. I had to stay in the match and I had to be really focused. I’m happy with all those things.” After winning a tight opening set by breezing through a 7-1 tie-break, Murray quickly found himself down a break 2-0 in the second and that was all the 26th-seeded Dimitrov needed to level the match. Murray, a two-times Miami champion who had reached the final three times in the last four years,

grabbed the initiative in the third set, breaking his Russian opponent to nose ahead 3-1 but a determined Dimitrov broke right back to get the decisive set back on level terms. Service breaks continued with Dimitrov going on top again 4-3 and the Bulgarian consolidated his advantage by holding serve for a 5-3 lead. With Murray serving to stay in the match Dimitrov broke yet again, closing out the rollercoaster contest on his first match point in two hours 25 minutes. “(I made) a lot of unforced errors in the third set,” Murray said. “After winning a close first set you want to try and put your opponent under pressure. “Credit to him. He was more solid than me.” Next up for Dimitrov will be Frenchman Gael Monfils, who hit 13 aces in a 6-3 6-4 win over Pablo Cuevas. MIAMI - Andy Murray, accustomed to going deep into the Miami Open, was derailed in the third round on Monday, falling 6-7(1) 6-4 6-3 to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The Scotsman might have sensed trouble was in the air at Crandon Park after the opening two matches on Stadium court ended in shock results with women’s world number one Serena Williams and number two Agnieszka Radwanska both upset victims. “To be honest, I just played better in the big moments today,” Dimitrov told reporters. “I had quite a few opportunities and I used them. “Even though I lost the first set, I kept good composure. EgyptAir plane hijacked to Cyprus, most passengers freed
CAIRO - An EgyptAir plane flying from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and forced to land in Cyprus on Tuesday by a man Cypriot state media said was demanding the release of women prisoners in Egypt. After the aircraft landed at Larnaca airport, the hijacker released everyone onboard except three passengers and four crew following negotiations, Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said. He declined to give their nationalities. Eighty-one people, including 21 foreigners and 15 crew, had been onboard the Airbus 320, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement. The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and a private broadcaster, Antenna, said the hijacker was asking for the release of women prisoners in Egypt, suggesting a political motive. He had also asked to get in touch with European Union officials, CyBC reported, citing a letter the hijacker dropped onto the apron at Larnaca airport. The plane remained on the tarmac at Laranca throughout the morning while Cypriot security forces took up positions around the scene. Security sources in Egypt said a separate New York-bound flight from Cairo was delayed due to security fears related to the hijacking. They gave no more details. While the reasons for the hi-
jacking were not entirely clear, the incident will deal another blow to Egypt’s tourism industry and hurt efforts to revive an economy hammered by political unrest following the 2011 uprising. The sector, a main source of hard currency, was already reeling from the crash of a Russian passenger plane in the Sinai in late October. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said it was brought down by a terrorist attack. Islamic State has said it planted a bomb on board, killing all 224 people on board. The latest reports on Tuesday’s hijacking contradict earlier statements by Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and other Cypriot security sources suggesting the hijacker’s motives were personal and linked to an ex-wife who lived in Cyprus. There was also some confusion over the identity of the hijacker. Egypt’s official state news agency MENA initially named him as Egyptian national Ibrahim Samaha but later said the hijacker was called Seif Eldin Mustafa. The Cypriot Foreign Affairs Ministry also identified the hijacker in a tweet as Mustafa. The Civil Aviation Ministry said
the plane’s pilot, Omar al-Gammal, had informed authorities that he was threatened by a passenger who claimed to be wearing a suicide explosives belt and forced him to divert the plane to Larnaca. “We do not know until now if this was a threat or if he was really wearing an explosive belt,” Fethy told the news conference, adding that the hijacker was not carrying a gun. Witnesses said the hijacker threw a letter on the apron of the airport in Larnaca, written in Arabic, asking that it be delivered to his ex-wife, who is Cypriot. Passengers on the plane included eight Americans, four Britons, four Dutch, two Belgians, an Italian, a Syrian and French national, the Civil Aviation Ministry. The Dutch Foreign Ministry said earlier a Dutchman was among the foreigners still aboard. Cyprus has seen little militant activity for decades, despite its proximity to the Middle East. A botched attempt by Egyptian commandos to storm a hijacked airliner at Larnaca airport led to the disruption of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Egypt in 1978. In 1988, a Kuwaiti airliner which had been hijacked from Bangkok to Kuwait in a 16-day seige had a stopover in Larnaca, where two hostages were killed. (rtr)

Taliban faction taunts Pakistan PM after Easter Day bombing ISLAMABAD - The Pakistani militants who bombed a Lahore park on Easter Sunday, killing 70 people, taunted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday, declaring their war had come to his doorstep. The military has said it is hunting the Taliban’s Jamaat-urAhrar faction and has carried out several raids since the suicide bombing, but neither the military nor the government has given any details. Jamaat-ur-Ahrar claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying it had targeted Christians celebrating Easter and warning it would step up attacks. Lahore is the capital of Punjab, Pakistan’s richest and most populous province and Sharif’s political heartland. “Let Nawaz Sharif know that this war has now come to the threshold of his home,” tweeted Jamaat-ur-Ahrar spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan. “The winners of this war will, God willing, be the righteous mujahideen.” Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, an independent faction of the Pakistani Taliban which and also previously declared loyalty to Islamic State, has carried out five major attacks in Pakistan since December. SACRAMENTO — A political deal to raise California’s minimum wage to a nation-leading $15 an hour could help some workers cope with the state’s crushing cost of living but also deprive other low-wage earners of jobs altogether, economists said Monday as Gov. Jerry Brown and other leaders touted what would be a landmark agreement. California’s economy is larger than that of most countries, with a wide diversity of earners. While newly minted millionaires gentrify neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area, some Central Valley field hands lack access to clean water. A jump from the current $10 an hour spread over six years would affect millions. Rafael Gutierrez, a 53-year-old farmworker, said the increase would let him treat his family to weekend dinners out and a short vacation to Disneyland from his home in Fresno County. His last job picking peaches and grapes paid $11 an hour. His girlfriend makes $14 an hour at Target. Though their region is far from California’s costliest, “Right now, we’re just making it,” Gutierrez said. “Life is expensive.” And then there are employers such as Chuck Herrin, owner of Sunrise Farm Labor, which provides roughly 2,500 workers each year in the San Joaquin Valley. Herrin predicted that farmers would hire 10 percent fewer workers because of the higher cost of business. “It’s going to be devastating,” said Herrin of the impact on fieldworkers and their dependent relatives. On Monday, Brown touted the deal his administration struck with legislative and labor leaders as potentially historic, calling it a matter of economic justice. Under the proposal, which the Legislature has yet to approve, the minimum wage would rise gradually, reaching $15 by 2022. After that wages would rise with inflation, though in tough economic times the governor could delay increases. Lawmakers could send the bill to Brown’s desk as early as Thursday, said Sen. Mark Leno, a San Francisco Democrat. The hike would create the nation’s highest statewide minimum wage. California and Massachusetts are the current highest at $10. Washington, D.C., stands at $10.50. Oregon’s governor signed legislation this year that would raise wages by 2022 depending on location. A federal judge in the U.S. island territory ruled that a modified tangible-property tax is invalid. The ruling was issued as Puerto Rico’s government rushes to find new sources of revenue and a debt restructuring mechanism from the U.S. Congress while struggling through a decade-long economic crisis. Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla said his government will appeal the decision. “The judge just took away $100 million from the people of Puerto Rico and gave it to Walmart,” he said, referring to the revenue the tax would have generated this fiscal year for the U.S. territory. “Now I have to look for that money somewhere else. Of course I’m
going to appeal the decision, and immediately.” Legislators echoed his sentiments, pledging to approve a new bill to obtain a portion of the revenue generated by retail giants across the island. Walmart is Puerto Rico’s largest private employer, with more than 14,000 workers, and argued in a lawsuit filed in December that the tax was unconstitutional. Federal Judge Jose Antonio Fuste agreed in his 109-page ruling and said the island’s treasury secretary must immediately stop levying, collecting and enforcing the tax. He noted Puerto Rico legislators had increased the tax by 325 percent in May 2015 during what he called a
brisk approval process so they could capture revenues from Walmart. The 6.5 percent tax would have applied to every piece of inventory Walmart received for its stores even if it wasn’t able to sell it, Fuste said. He said that if the tax were to remain in effect, it would generate more than $40 million in “unconstitutional taxes ... to an insolvent government without any hope that the victimized taxpayers will be reimbursed in the foreseeable future. That is the very definition of an inadequate remedy,” he wrote, adding that $10 million of that revenue would have been from Walmart alone. The ruling comes as Walmart prepares to close seven stores in Puerto Rico as part of a plan to shutter 269 stores worldwide.(ap)
The minister remarked that a military patrol boat had been readied to anticipate accidents. However, Ryacudu noted that the military could not conduct any operations in the Philippines without obtaining prior permission from the authorities. The minister affirmed that the hijacking of the Indonesian vessel was different from the piracy in Somalia. Ryacudu has coordinated with his Philippine counterpart over the piracy issue. “Indonesia continues to monitor the developments in the hostage situation,” the minister remarked. According to national media, the Indonesian Embassy in Manila has confirmed that an Indonesian vessel was hijacked in the Philippines, and 10 Indonesian crewmen were taken hostage. Embassy spokesperson Basriana could not confirm whether Abu Sayyaf militants, a group of Islamic extremists, were behind the hijacking of the Indonesian vessel. The embassy continues to coordinate with the Indonesian Consulate General in Davao and other relevant authorities in the Philippines to gather more information on the situation.(ant)

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs, Law and Security Luhut Binsar Padjaitan said the government resolved to settle human rights cases “in not too long time.” “We are studying ways to settle all human rights cases in Indonesia. BENGKULU - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked the eastern part of Bengkulu province on Tuesday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said. The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 01.24 p,m. local time was located 22 kilometers northwest of Lebong, Bengkulu, at a depth of 128 kilometers, the agency said in its official website. “Most residents of Bengkulu city felt the earthquake for a while,” Head of the Observation and Information Section of the BMKG Office in Bengkulu Sudiyanto said. Preserving Balinese culture through competition of psalmody
SINGARAJA - Balinese cultural preservation initiated by the government of Buleleng district through the Culture and Tourism Agency by holding the competition of pesantian or psalmody with the participants of nine troupes from across the subdistricts in Buleleng in a series with the 412th anniversary of Singaraja town. Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, said that the competition of psalmody held by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency can build the character and mental of younger generation to prefer it. Each sloka (couplet in Sanskrit verse) contains philosophical values that can be studied by younger generation, so that later on it can become a role model in life. “Hopefully, the competition of psalmody for our younger generation can make them closer to preservation of culture, religion and customs. It becomes one of the moments to keep their existence, character and mental. I am proud because they can participate in the competition and the slokas contain many philosophical values,” he said, Monday (Mar. 28), at Graha Lakshmi Hall, Singaraja. with a length of two meters by one meter and a square-shaped box with a size of two meters. “We estimate the pile of rocks is temple foundation or pertirtaan because it is quadrangular. Next year, we will continue with the reconstruction, so that they can describe the actual shape,” said Made Suarbhawa, when met on Monday (Mar. 28). Findings of the rocks predicted as temple foundation originating in the fourteenth century is a continuation. In previous studies, the institute has managed to find an assortment of statues, perforated coins, sarcophagus and a pile of rocks at different locations. He explained the institute found the composition of rocks protruding from the bottom of the temple building. The second box is right at the eastern side of gedong arca or next to the temple compound wall. Well, in the rectangular box is also found hundreds of neatly arranged bricks. Then, in the last excavation in the eastern side of the temple or exactly beside the compound wall was found a mound of rocks. In this third excavation is found lot of rocks in broken condition.
“Many foundations are not intact. Probably they were taken by local people for the construction of compound wall in 1986,” said Made Suarbhawa accompanied by the Gelang Agung Research Team Leader, A.A. Gede Oka Astawa. As reported, the archaeological heritage sites in the innermost courtyard of the Gelang Agung Temple is predicted to be a temple or sanctum belonging to the last Balinese kingdom ruled by Sri Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten whose palace sat at Bedahulu (now, Bedulu village), Gianyar. It is proved by the heritages in the form of some statues like phallus, garuda of Vishnu, Ganesha, nandini bull and rooftops with ornament resembling the heritages of the fourteenth century. According to the archaeologist who is also the Gelang Agung Research Team Leader, A.A. Gede Agung Oka Astawa, the Gelang Agung site can almost be ensured if it is a sanctum originating from the fourteenth century. To research the sites buried in this temple, the archaeologists have made excavation at a number of points in the innermost and outermost courtyard of the Gelang Agung
Temple since 2013. As a result, in 2013 the archaeologists found the foundation and structure in the eastern side of the innermost courtyard. Other than finding a pile of older rocks, at that time the archaeologists also discovered hundreds of perforated coins and potteries buried in the area. Previously, local residents already found statues scattered under frangipani trees in the temple innermost courtyard (uttama mandala). In the second study made in 2014, the archaeologists found hundreds of piles of rocks at different points exactly in the north of the compound wall of the innermost courtyard estimated to be the structure of the temple. In the study taking place on November 12-21, 2015, the archaeologists assisted by local residents found again the structure of ancient temple. Pile of rocks was found in the northern part of the innermost courtyard. Neat rock stack of 0.5 meter deep in the ground is estimated to be the connecting parts of the building structure found in 2014. This argument is supported by the pile of rocks sits next to the findings as the results of research in 2014. (kmb27)
Thein Sein announced the move in state media on Tuesday, a day before a president from Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) will be sworn in at an official handover, after the NLD won the Nov. 8 election by a landslide. While there have been no major clashes in Rakhine in the last two years, most of Myanmar’s 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims remain stateless and live in apartheid-like conditions. They are denied citizenship and have long complained of state-sanctioned discrimination. “It is found from the report by the Rakhine state government that the situation in Rakhine state can no longer pose dangers to the lives and property of the people,” said the ordinance signed by Thein Sein. Myanmar has denied discriminating against the group. It does not recognise the Rohingya as an ethnic minority and instead classifies them as Bengalis. Most Rohingya reject the term and many families have lived in Rakhine for generations. Rohingya were denied participation - both as voters and as
candidates - in the November vote. Before the elections, religious tensions were high, with the NLD deciding not to field a single Muslim candidate on its lists of more than 1,100 hopefuls. The Rohingya are widely disliked in Myanmar, where they are seen as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh - including by some in Suu Kyi’s party. She risks haemorrhaging support by taking up their cause. Tensions are rising between the NLD and the Rakhine-based Arakan National Party (ANP), one of Myanmar’s most vocal ethnic parties. ANP lawmakers walked out of the regional parliament on Monday wearing black stickers on their jackets, because the NLD denied them the position of the chief minister of the state. Still, lack of fighting means that some 25,000 Rohingya Muslims have left camps for displaced people and returned to the communities, the United Nations said last week, with the number of people in camps down to around 120,000 from 145,000. The OAB added the controversial appointment last week to Rousseff’s Cabinet of her predecessor and mentor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which the lawyers argued was an illegal move to shield him from prosecution in the Petrobras graft probe. US hacks iPhone, ends legal battle but questions linger WASHINGTON — The extraordinary legal fight pitting the Obama administration against technology giant Apple Inc. ended unexpectedly after the FBI said it used a mysterious method without Apple’s help to hack into a California mass shooter’s iPhone. Left unanswered, however, were questions about how the sudden development would affect privacy in the future, and what happens the next time the government is frustrated by digital security lockout features. Government prosecutors asked a federal judge on Monday to vacate a disputed order forcing Apple to help the FBI break into the iPhone, saying it was no longer necessary. The FBI used the unspecified technique to access data on an iPhone used by gunman Syed Farook, who died with his wife in a gun battle with police after they killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, in December. The Justice Department said agents are now reviewing the information on the phone.
But the government’s brief court filing, in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, provided no details about how the FBI got into the phone. Nor did it identify the non-government “outside party” that showed agents how to get past the phone’s security defenses. Authorities had previously said only Apple had the ability to help them unlock the phone. Apple responded by saying it will continue to increase the security of its products. “We will continue to help law enforcement with their investigations, as we have done all along,” the company added in a statement, while reiterating its argument that the government’s demand for Apple’s help was wrong. “This case should never have
been brought,” the company said. FBI Assistant Director David Bowdich said Monday that examining the iPhone was part of the authorities’ effort to learn if the San Bernardino shooters had worked with others or had targeted any other victims. “I am satisfied that we have access to more answers than we did before,” he said in a statement. The dispute had ignited a fierce Internet-era national debate that pitted digital privacy rights against national security concerns and reinvigorated discussion over the impact of encryption on law enforcement’s ability to serve the public. Darrell Issa, R-California, said in a statement that while it was “preferable” that the government gained access to the iPhone without Apple’s help, the fundamental question of the extent to which the government should be able to access personal information remains unanswered. WASHINGTON — As North Korea rattles its nuclear saber, threatening to bomb the U.S. at “any moment,” a nerve-jangling question hangs in the air: If Pyongyang did launch a nuclear-armed missile at an American city, could the Pentagon’s missile defenses overcome their spotty test record and shoot it down beyond U.S. shores? America has never faced such a real-life crisis, and although officials say they are confident the defenses would work as advertised, the Pentagon acknowledges potential gaps that North Korea or others might be able to exploit, someday if not immediately. One possible vulnerability involves a foe’s “countermeasures,” or decoys carried aboard long-range offensive missiles to fool a U.S. interceptor missile into hitting the wrong target. The Pentagon has poured at least $84 billion into missile defense over the past decade and is planning to spend another $3.3 billion over the next five years for a single element of the system, known as Ground-based Midcourse Defense, or GMD. Its key part is a network of interceptor missiles designed to launch from underground silos, fly into the path of an enemy missile as it arcs through space and smash into it, destroying it. That system has failed three of its last four intercept tests. The only success in that series was the most recent test, in June 2014. A congressional watchdog agency, the Government Accountability Office, said in February that the
Pentagon “has not demonstrated through flight testing that it can defend the U.S. homeland against the current missile defense threat.” Adm. William Gortney, America’s homeland defender as head of U.S. Northern Command, told Congress this month that the nation needs “more capable forces and broader options.” Key improvements are in the works, including a “long-range discrimination” radar for more effective tracking of incoming missiles. The North Koreans’ harsh rhetoric, including a threat in February to deal “fatal blows at the U.S. mainland any moment,” is linked in part to its anger at U.S.-South Korean military exercises, which the North sees as a rehearsal for an invasion. No one is predicting a bolt-outof-the-blue North Korean nuclear attack, but the threat looms larger as the North Koreans seemingly move closer to fielding a nuclear-armed missile that can reach U.S. territory. Already this year they have claimed a successful H-bomb test, put a satellite into space orbit and claimed a successful simulated test of the warhead re-entry knowhow needed for a missile strike on the United States. Village Chief Sujapa explained that through the letter of attorney, Rudi Handani as Director of PT Canggu International, appointed Yudistira Association as his legal bureau. Based on the letter of attorney No. 036/SK/BJY/H/III’2016, the Yudistira Association legal bureau sent a letter of reprimand to the headman of Canggu. “We were sent a legal notice by the owner of the hotel, through the hotel’s legal bureau” he said. Sujana clarified that the letter or reprimand mentioned four points including that the blocking of access to PT Canggu International does not comply with procedures and was done without prior notice. Also, that due to the action of local residents, the company has suffered losses worth IDR 1 billion per day. Therefore, the company hopes that the road can be re-opened so as to avoid legal troubles. Canggu Customary Village plans to first organize a meeting with customary leaders to determine their response to the letter. “We will first hold a village meeting to come up with a decision on the matter” explained the Chief of Canggu. Sujana added that “We hope that the government will immediately step in to help mediate between the hotel and the village”. In response to this issue, Deputy Regent of Badung, Ketut Suiasa, said that they are still looking into the how and why it is that the Canggu residents came to close access to hotel. “Once we have more information, we will invite members of the community and the owner of the hotel to discuss the matter”, he said. The blocking of the road access to Hotel Canggu International was based on the results of a previous meeting with the hotel and former chief of Canggu Customary Village I Wayan Suamba, in which the hotel was asked to: lower the L-gutter (breakwater) because it is too high, to adhere by the rules that require beach access to the temple, to re-measure the land to determine the exact limits of who owns what, and to dismantle the culvert that lays across the road. The hotel was given a deadline of March 20th to meet these demands. When Hotel Canggu Internatinoal did not have the goodwill to meet the demands of the villagers, the villagers blocked road access to the hotel. (kmb27)

MANGUPURA - Businesses that depend on weather condition are very vulnerable to the rising and falling prices of raw materials. Roof tile businesses additionally rely on weather conditions in their production process. Owner of UD Jinar, explained that their production of 700 tiles a days requires that the tiles dry on the sun for a couple of days. “We fire our tiles once a month, and if all goes well, we can produce up to 10,000 tiles per month” said Mrs. Jinar on Friday (Mar 25). Because UD Jinar uses the traditional method of burning firewood, the drying process is very important to avoide cracking tiles. If the weather is good and the tiles dry well, the price of smallsized roof tile is IDR 1,300 and IDR 1,600 for the large size. But in rainy season, the price of roof tile rises from IDR 200-IDR 300 to IDR 1,500-IDR 1,800. On average, a small house requires 1,000 roof tiles, while a big house requires 5,000 pieces. “The price also depends on the cost of the raw materials. The standard price is IDR 1,300 but it can go up to goes up to IDR 1,500 -- IDR1,800” she said. The raw clay used in making these tiles comes from nearby Tegal Darmasaba, but UD. Jinar purchases ready-to-use clay, so that
only pressing, drying and firing is all that is required. Very little of this ready to use clay is produced, however, so sometimes Mrs. Jinar’s business falters. Because of the limited availability of the raw materials, the amount that can be ordered everyday is uncertain she explained, adding that roof tile entrepreneurs tend to order quite large amounts. “Few people produce clay materials, while we need large amounts” she said. This business that Mrs. Jinar started in 2000, involves two tile makers. Mrs. Jinar herself does not have experience making tiles, so she relies on her two employees
and the skills that they brought to the company. Currently the demand for roof tiles is unstable. “The demand for tiles is not like it was in the past when people would build in certain months and so we could rely on orders at certain times of the year. Now we lack orders, perhaps it is due to economic conditions” she said adding that tight competition makes things even harder. UD. Jinar, gets most of their orders from foreigners who are building in Bali or elsewhere like Yogyakarta and sometimes her tiles are even exported to Japan or Australia. “Those orders are usually dealt with by cargo companies”, she explained. Mrs. Jinar added that foreigners are interested in purchasing roof tiles from Bali because they are unique and distinctive. “Balinese roof tile ornaments are more sought after”, she said. UD. Jinar makes both Balinese and non-Balinese roof tiles. “The special shape of Balinese roof tiles are very recognizable”, she added. (kmb42)

Today there are 2,666 people in Bali known to be suffering from HIV/AIDS. Based on WHO estimates this would indicate that there are in fact somewhere closer to 12, 473 people who are infected with the virus. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Bali is ranked fifth in Indonesia after Jakarta, West Java, East Java and Papua. Punia said that he is especially concerned about the situation because despite Bali’s population being approximately 3 million people, it is still ranked fifth in Indonesia. According to the Karangasem Health Agancy’s data, as of December 2015, there were hundreds of people in Karangasem who are known to be infected with HIV/ AIDS. There 143 people carrying
HIV/AIDS in the subdistrict of Karangasem, 98 in Kubu, 78 in Abang 56 in Manggis, 52 in Bebandem and 30 in Sidemen. When Punia was the head of the Sidemen Health Center, there were only 5 people known to be infected with HIV/AIDS. Allegedly the tourist area of Tebola greatly contributes to the spread of the virus because of the relatively large number of budget hotels and villas in the area where unprotected sexual activity may take place. In early February, a pregnant woman tested positive for HIV. “We’ll do what we can to prevent the baby from becoming infected with the virus. Perhaps a cesarean section will be required and the medical team will be informed about how to decrease the risk of passing infection onto the child” he said.

In order to avoid transmission through sexual intercourse, married couples are advised to remain faithful and unmarried people are advised to keep their sexual partners to a minimum and to always use condoms when engaging in any form of sexual activity. He added that the use of illicit drugs and HIV/AIDS transmission often go hand in hand as many addicts will share infected needles with anywhere from two to five other people, thus increasing their risk of contracting the disease. “Say no to drug abuse. MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin could meet British singer Elton John when he visits Russia in May if room can be found in the two men’s schedules, the Kremlin said on Monday. Putin telephoned Elton John in September to say he would be ready to meet for a chat after the entertainer requested a meeting to discuss his concerns about gay rights in Russia. “When they spoke by telephone several months ago, they agreed ... they will meet during Elton John’s stay in Moscow,” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a teleconference with journalists.
“Such a meeting cannot be excluded, if there are precise dates of his (John’s) stay here and if the president’s working schedule allows it,” he said without elaborating. John, 69, is set to give a concert in a high-end Moscow shopping and entertainment centre on May 30 as part of his world tour. Before going to Moscow, he is expected to give a concert at an

More Than 5,000 Arrested Over Pakistan Blast
Lahore - More than 5,000 people have been arrested following Sunday’s suicide bombing in Pakistan, a provincial minister has said. Seventy-three people were killed and hundreds more injured in the blast in Lahore. Many of the victims were children. Of the thousands arrested, around 200 people remain in custody. “More than 5,000 people were searched and interrogated and most of them were allowed to go, but some 216 have been apprehended for further investigations,” Rana Sanaullah told reporters. The bombs went off near a children’s play area in the park on Sunday afternoon as families were out enjoying the warm day. The attack was claimed by the Jamaat-ulAhrar faction of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The militants have since sent a taunting tweet to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, saying war has “reached his doorstep”. Ehansullah Ehsan, spokesman for the Jamaatul-Ahrar, tweeted: “After the Lahore attack, Nawaz Sharif repeated old words to give himself false assurances. “Nawaz Sharif should know that war has reached his doorstep, and God willing the mujahideen will be the winners in this war.”

Karangasem in particular is quite alarming and that people seem o be unaware about the risk of sexual transmission and so unprotected sex in the area is quite common. People in Karangasema also seem to be unaware about the availability and
importance of of blood testing for the presence of the virus. Karangasem is not, however not the only area in Bali where HIV/ AIDS continues to be spread. In fact Bali has not qualified for certification for the reduction of HIV/AIDS trans-
