‘Ghostbusters’ cast set with McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon, Jones NEW YORK — The “Ghostbusters” reboot has set its all-female leads with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and a pair of “Saturday Night Live” performers. Director Paul Feig announced his stars by posting their pictures on Twitter on Tuesday. Joining McCarthy and Wiig are Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Feig tweeted that Sony Pictures will release the film in July 2016. Production is expected to begin later this year. The new “Ghostbusters” updates the original 1984 film and the 1989 sequel. DENPASAR - Balinese people have undergone various changes. One of which involves their value system and this change in values has consequences on the patterns of their social relations. The most fundamental shift in the value system, said the academic Dr. Ida Bagus Radendra Suastama, is the orientation of Balinese people from communal to individualistic. Even, if there are activities that Balinese people participate in that appear to be communal, these tend to be motivated by pragmatism and enacted simply as formalities. Rahendra who is also Chairman of the STIMI Handayani Denpasar Foundation said that this was not entirely a bad thing but this phenomenon does have deeper consequences on aspects of life such as the environment and other aspects as well. “Previously the Balinese worldview considered the

environment a valuable component of life that contributed to happiness and harmony. Now however, there has been a shift towards a vision that considers our environment, especially the land and landscape, simply as commodities,”, he said. The comomdification of nature indicates a fundamental shift in

peoples’ values. The most concrete consequence can be witnessed by the tendency of agricultural land to be converted into residential buildings or real estate, ranging from the smallest to the most luxurious kinds. In assessing this reality, Rahendra, does not presume to judge the situation as good or bad, positive or negative. Obviously these changes to the landscape are a result of social phenomena. A change in the social, cultural and even political values and perspectives of the Balinese people has occurred. In short, it could be said that the dominance of a value system that gives priority to money over other things that had previously been highly valued (such as purity and sincerity) is the corner-

stone of wider shift in values. In the political field, for instance, the orientation towards a mindset rooted in profits found amongst the general population, has led to cash motivated decisions. This is not a good thing. Although many people consider that cash driven politics is natural, in terms of political philosophy, it is not correct and should not be the dominant motivating factor. The essence of politics is the use of power for the benefit of the wider community or public interest. Viewing politics merely as a commercial transaction is a denial of the basis of political philosophy. A social-political perspective that is too pragmatic is likely to give rise to corrupt politicians or rulers who are

just looking for a quick turnover on investments made for gaining political clout. Such an attitude also produces politicians who are not sincere in thinking about and pursuing the realization of public welfare. Such leadership is nowhere near embodying the ideal of a leader as defined in political philosophy such as the kind mentioned from time immemorial in Hindu political scriptures such as Arthasastra and Nitisastra. Rahendra, who works as lecturer at the Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi) Denpasar speaks of the importance of keeping the identity and values of Bali, as the hallmark of Bali. Continued on page 6

Regional poverty has not get attention

BANGLI - Portrait of poverty in the region, particularly in Bangli County, has not yet received serious attention from related parties. So far, there are many people who are seen to have not been able to meet their various life needs. The family of Wayang Keted, 60, a resident of Penida Kaler hamlet, Tembuku, for instance, should move from his previous residence because his house measuring 3 × 5 meters is almost uninhabitable. Keted with his wife, Nyoman Murni, and a daughter Putu Sidia Ratna Dewi, are now choosing to stay in a patch of house adjoining with a swine enclosure which is not far from his previous house. “My previous house was very small and not enough for the three of us,” said Keted, Wednesday (Jan 28). The current dwelling place of Keted belongs to a swine farm businessman. His wife, his daughter and he directly become the laborer at the farm. It looks sad when Keted only gets paid as much as IDR 400,000. Such amount has also included the income of his daughter and his wife. For survival supplies such as rice, he sometimes obtains from his employer. “I can only get wage as much as IDR 400,000 and it has included the wage of my wife and daughter,” he said. On the other hand, the condition of their house is also very alarming where the bed is in the same room as the kitchen. Meanwhile, his stove firewood seems to be placed next to his bedroom. Such circumstances make the family of Keted difficult. He cannot repair the house, let alone meet the needs of daily life. It is very

difficult for him. Besides, he cannot afford to pay school tuition of his daughter. She is now 15 years old and had to drop out of school when promoting to fifth grade of elementary school. Now, Keted having been old and sickly is unable to afford the necessities of his life in full. More ironically, despite being in very poor condition, the family of Keted does not get the attention and support on regular basis whereas they really need it. Lately, he has no longer got any assistance, both the rice for the poor (raskin) and direct cash assistance (BLT). Less maximal attention given by relevant agencies to poor households in the field is visible. A number of cases of poor household were just addressed after getting publicity. Some previous examples include the family of Ketut Remi from Pludu hamlet, Bayunggede village, Kintamani and Nyoman Ruwi from Tembuku. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. High potential of dragon fruit, farmers complain about marketing

SINGARAJA - Dragon fruit cultivation in Buleleng gets difficulty in marketing crops. This condition is often experienced by a number of dragon fruit growers in the area of Tengah hamlet, Temukus village, Banjar subdistrict, Buleleng. Actually Buleleng has great potential of dragon fruit. The structure of the soil and hot climate are qualified so that it is capable of harvesting dragon fruit once a year and the results are quite promising. Lack of marketing link for dragon fruit production requires the attention of Buleleng government, and including the development of tourism potential through the presence of dragon fruit cultivation.

According to Putu Suastika, 48, a dragon fruit grower, three years ago he pioneered the dragon fruit cultivation in Buleleng with family with a minimal capital. Some of the necessities of the dragon fruit cultivation such as beam pedestal, seedlings, manure and maintenance cost totally spent IDR 6 million. Until now, he was able to cultivate a total of 60 dragon fruit trees spreading across an area of 500 to 600 square meters. “We fertilize our dragon fruit plants with manure and they do not need a lot of water. Dragon fruit buyers tend to come from our neighbors dominated by fruiterers,” he said. Suastika said the problem of dragon fruit in Buleleng was not only in the matter of cultivation process, but also in the marketing of the dragon fruit crops where the problem often arose when the crop was abundant. Such condition excluded the onslaught of dragon fruit product at lower prices coming from outside Bali. “Our constraint occurs in the harvest season and there were no fruiterers dropping our crops to marketing access. So far, we have never faced harvest failure because it only harvests once a year. Thus, we hope there are parties wishing to help

suffer losses. “Each subak has decided the planting season and most farmers preferred to start planting in February 2015. Along with this month, their paddy plant can be hit by tidal waves so that their young plants will be vulnerable to the effects of tidal waves,” he said. On the other hand, he said that most coastal areas bordering with paddy fields belonging to farmers had not be protected with revetment. Even, so far the coastline directly bordering with paddy fields had been besieged by severe abrasion. If only the prevention of coastal abrasion could have be optimized by technical agency, at least the threat of paddy fields from the pounding of waves or the influence of seawater during bad weather season could be avoided. “If only there was a concrete breakwater, perhaps the paddy fields on the beach have not been converted into building as they will be protected from the threat of tidal waves. customer officers checked every passenger by using X-ray device. At that time, the officers detected a suspicious object, precisely the object in the suitcase carried by the defendant. Correctly, in the organizer was found 10 clear plastic packs coated with carbon paper and tape containing clear crystal. After making in-depth examination by means

of narcotic test, the clear crystal was a kind of narcotic dosage belonging to crystal meth. It totally weighed 2,101 grams gross. NEGARA - After opened last mid-year, the Ijogading market becoming an example of modern traditional market in Jembrana is still relatively quiet. Even, this market is actually crowded with visitors at night when the market has already been closed. Though it is crowded with visitors, a number of facilities at the market are not functioned such as the toilet, for example. It is questioned why it is not functioned either for traders or visitors. There are public toilets managed and can be used any time by visitors and traders. “The toilet has been closed for a long time and is deliberately locked at night. So, it cannot be used. The toilet is useless as cannot be used,” said one of the traders met on Tuesday night (Jan 27). Visitors admitted to get difficulty when looking for toilets around the market as it was found to have been locked. Currently, the management of Ijogading market is halved. During the day, the market is managed by the Jembrana Industry, Trade and Cooperatives Agency. Meanwhile, at night the market is managed by local government-owned enterprise (Perusda). Trade Division Head of the Jembrana Industry, Trade and Cooperatives Agency, I Komang Susila, when asked for his confirmation related to the protest of Ijogading market facilities claimed to have never heard of it. But he said that since the market building was still managed by the agency and currently there was no specific officer to keep the toilet, it was temporarily not opened. “Once we opened at night, but many parts were damaged and lost where the faucet was broken and toilet was dirty. Therefore, we then locked it,” said Susila. His party hoped that both the operation at daytime and night could be in single management to make the coordination easier, including the matters related to the use of toilet. Currently the agency was still designing a toilet management, including the traders. So, there would be a responsibility to maintain the toilet condition. “We’re still trying to do, whether we will team up with the traders or other party. Egg price rises amid declining production

Sardana, the native to Pasedahan, Manggis subdistrict, said the price of small eggs at his farm was around IDR 30,000 per egg container. It increased as much as IDR 5,000 compared to the previous price at only IDR 25,000 per container. While at retailer it also increased from IDR 32,000 to IDR 38,000 per egg container. Meanwhile, the large egg at the farm was sold for IDR 32,000 from the previously IDR 30,000. “At wholesaler, the price of large egg increased from IDR 32,000

to IDR 34,000. But there were also traders selling it for IDR 35,000,” he explained. In the meantime, the price of super egg rose as much as IDR 1,000 from IDR 34,000 to IDR 35,000 at farmer level. However, the current price in the market reached IDR 37,000. Though the price of egg increased, the demand remained high. He admitted to still send eggs out of Bali province such as Lombok and Sumbawa. Philippine mayor arrested, escorted to graft hearing

MANILA — The mayor of the Philippines’ main financial district was arrested Thursday for contempt and escorted to a Senate hearing to answer allegations of corruption after he repeatedly snubbed the legislature. Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. was picked up by Senate security personnel on orders of lawmakers investigating allegedly anomalous contracts in the city. Binay Jr. succeeded his father Jejomar Binay as mayor of the country’s wealthiest city after the latter was elected vice president in 2010. He was detained at the office of the Senate sergeant-at-arms then escorted to a sub-committee hearing amid shouts by his supporters. He refused to answer questions, saying his lawyers have advised him not to attend because they were questioning the Senate’s jurisdiction. Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III, chairman

of the sub-committee, took note of Binay’s position and allowed him to leave more three hours after his arrest. The Binays have emerged as a powerful political dynasty and the father has been mentioned as a possible presidential contender in 2016. They have been dogged by criticism of nepotism and alleged corruption, which they deny. “Let me be clear, we are not fighting with the Senate as an institution,” Mayor Binay told the commitee. “What we are saying is we also have rights which need to be heard.” Pimentel insisted that his sub-committee has jurisdiction. The Binays also face plunder charges before the anti-graft prosecutor for the same allegedly overpriced projects. IMF begins work on ‘Plan B’ as US blocks reforms WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund said Wednesday it would begin working on alternatives to its stalled, five-year-old reform program after passing another year without the required ratification by the US government. In a proposal mapped out by the IMF executive board, the global crisis lender will take six months to see what can be salvaged from the 2010 reforms, originally backed by Washington, the IMF’s largest shareholder, but now blocked in the US Congress.

The IMF did not say what the socalled “Plan B” could entail. And it appeared hopeful that the 2010 package, which doubled IMF funding and increased in a small way the voting

power of emerging economies like China, could be completed. But the 24 member executive board said in a statement to the broader board of governors of the Fund that it “deeply

regrets” that the 2010 reforms remain blocked, adding that this has caused it to miss deadlines in work on a subsequent, more sweeping quota review. The executive board proposed taking until June 30 to come up with new measures “that represent meaningful progress towards the objectives of the 2010 reforms.” The United States, as one of the key founders of the IMF and the world’s largest economy, controls 16.7 percent of voting rights in the Fund. That gives it an effective veto

over any major initiative, as reforms require 85 percent of total voting power to pass. The Obama administration has repeatedly pressed Congress to pass the reforms, which were adopted by the IMF as it sought more funding when Europe began to plunge into financial crisis and the Fund joined the rescues of Greece, Ireland, and Portugal. But Republican conservatives have blocked any endorsement of the reforms, and since they captured full control of the US legislature in

November’s elections, prospects for ratification have worsened. The executive board stressed in a statement Wednesday that it does not see the alternative measures of Plan B as any replacement for the plan decided five years ago. “The proposed resolution stresses that such interim steps should not in any way be seen as a substitute for the 2010 reforms, which remain the highest priority,” it said. SEOUL — Samsung lost the battle of the big phones last quarter as Apple’s copycat large iPhone lured buyers in the crucial Chinese market. The South Korean company said Thursday its profit sank last quarter, with an improvement in its semiconductor business insufficient to mask its mobile problems. It was in China, the world’s largest market for smartphones, where Samsung’s dramatic decline was most evident. Samsung accounted for nearly one third of global smartphone sales in 2013, twice as much as Apple. This year, it has dropped to about one quarter. Apple Inc. was behind Samsung’s latest reversal in fortune, launching iPhones with bigger screens that robbed Samsung’s Galaxy phones of a key selling point. The company was already battling competition in low-end phones from upstart manufacturers such as China’s Xiaomi. In the second quarter last year, Xiaomi overtook Samsung to become the biggest selling smartphone maker in China. Samsung now ranks third in that market, after Apple raced to the top in the fourth quarter, according to research company Canalys. Samsung is struggling in countries such as China because “they’re sort of being eaten from the bottom up by regional players” including Huawei and Xiaomi, said Ben Bajaran, an analyst at Silicon Valley research firm Creative Strategies. “And now with Apple being competitive in larger phones, you’re seeing them Samsung losing any edge they had at the high end,” he said.

Thanks to its bigger iPhones, Apple sold a record 74.5 million iPhones last quarter, which also helped make it the world’s most profitable company. Samsung, on the other hand, reported its fourth straight drop in quarterly earnings. Profit sank 27 percent to 5.3 trillion won ($4.9 billion). Until September, Apple lacked one thing that Samsung and other phonemakers had: a supersized smartphone screen. Apple’s older iPhone 5 had a screen that measured 4 inches diagonally, while screens of 5 inches or larger have been the standard in Asia for more than a year. The new iPhone 6 measures 4.7 inches and the 6 Plus is 5.5 inches. And that’s made a huge difference. Meanwhile, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone was criticized for a cheap looking design. Samsung replaced parts of the design with metallic features in subsequent models after the criticism. In its earnings conference call, Samsung estimated that its worldwide smartphone sales during the quarter were between 72.2 million units and 75.1 million units, confirming analysts’ forecasts that Apple has clawed back Samsung’s lead if not overtaken it. Samsung’s fourth quarter profit was a moderate improvement from the previous quarter’s 4.2 trillion won and higher than analysts’ forecasts of 4.4 trillion won, according to financial data provider FactSet. Sales fell 11 percent from a year earlier to 52.7 trillion won while operating profit slumped 36 percent to 5.3 trillion won, in line with Samsung’s preview earlier this month.

perform during the current quarter. Instead to appease investors, the company announced a 40 percent increase in its annual dividends for 2014. Repeating its previous statements, the company said it will try to differentiate its smartphones with new materials and designs and will reduce the number of smartphone models to streamline its business.

Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Note Edge, the big-size smartphone with a curved side display, but it remained a niche product. Output of curved screens remains limited until a new production line goes into operation later this year. SINGARAJA - Buleleng County has a unique gamelan instrument called gong pacek. This kind of gamelan is the same as the others, but the difference only lies in the gangsa instrument. Blades of the gangsa in gong pacek are set by using nails or iron. Underneath the blades is given a pad so that they can still generate a tone when beaten. Indeed, at first the Gong Kebyar in Buleleng was played by using gong pacek gamelan instrument. However, after the Gong Kebyar developed, the instrument was changed into suspended blades. Actually, to make the sounds dynamic and fast like in the gong kebyar style, the gamelan instrument should use gong pacek. To preserve this art heritage, a number of gamelan troupes in North Bali then change back their gamelan instrument from suspended blades into gong pacek. It is carried out so that the gong pacek becoming the characteristic of Buleleng will not be extinct. One of the gamelan troupes is the Tri Pitaka from Munduk village, Banjar subdistrict. Even, when it was invited to attend cultural mission overseas, the gamelan troupe carried gong pacek, not gong gantung or gamelan instrument with suspended blades. In the gong gantung, the blades are suspended with plastic or cowhide straps. In terms of tone, the blades of gangsa in gong pacek will fade after being beaten. Meanwhile, the tone of gong gantung will sound longer after being beaten. On that account, gong pacek is considered suitable for the use in playing the gong kebyar style gamelan composition requiring speed and dynamic tone. It is also used to accompany various Balinese dances. Durpa, a famous dancer in Buleleng, had also showed the difference between the gong pacek played in the Dwi Mekar Studio and gong gantung performed by musicians from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar through a contest event. Through the event Durpa wanted to show off that gong pacek was specifically made for fast gamelan composition like the gong kebyar. To reintroduce the type of the gong gantung, the ISI Denpasar through its lecturer, I Nyoman Karyasa, attempted to revive the glory of the gamelan art. This art institution also participated in introducing the gong pacek. He fostered the gamelan troupe through community service activities. (kmb)

The 47-year-old set up his own video news company, Independent Press in 1996, mainly covering refugees, children and poverty in war-torn countries. He has contributed reports to major Japanese networks and has worked with U.N. organizations and non-profit groups. He has also written books about children in conflict zones and lectured at Japanese schools. In late October, just two weeks after his wife gave birth to their child, Goto left for Syria to try to rescue his assistant, 42-year-old Haruna Yukawa, who had been captured by Islamic State militants. Goto was also seized by the militants, with his Twitter feed ending Oct. 23. Yukawa has reportedly been killed by his captors. Goto, who speaks fluent English, seems to have been a mentor to Yukawa, a weapons geek who wanted to set up a private security service despite having few language skills and scant

Sajida al-Rishawi has close family ties to the Iraqi branch of the al-Qaida terror network that became the forerunner of the Islamic State group. Still, she never explained why she strapped an explosives belt to her waist and, along with her husband, who also wore a bomb, walked into the luxury Radisson hotel in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Nov. 9, 2005. Her husband set off his bomb, ripping through a wedding party with 300 guests in the ballroom, but al-Rishawi’s explosives failed to go off. The bombing was one of three near-simultaneous attacks on Amman hotels on that day and killed 60 people in Jordan’s worst ever terror attack. The Iraq branch of al-Qaida claimed responsibility. Al-Rishawi fled, but was arrested four days later at a safe house. In a three-minute confession broadcast on Jordan TV shortly after her arrest, she appeared anxious, but offered no motive and suggested she was simply following her husband’s lead. She said he had brought her to Jordan and told her what to do. In the TV appearance, she opened her dark body-length overcoat to reveal two crude explosives belts, one with RDX and the other with ballbearings. “My husband detonated (his bomb) and I tried to explode (mine) but it wouldn’t,” she said at the time. “People fled running and I left running with them.” Al-Rishawi later recanted, saying she was an unwilling participant. A military court sentenced her to death by hanging. Her appeal was rejected and judges ruled she was “guilty beyond doubt.” She is the first woman sentenced to death in Jordan on terrorism charges. Since childhood, Muath al-Kaseasbeh had dreamed of becoming a pilot, but in recent months refused to share his feelings about Jordan’s bombing missions against Islamic State militants, his family says. Jordan’s participation in the U.S.-led military coalition against the Islamic State group is unpopular in the pilot’s home village of Ay and the nearby provincial town of Karak, said his brother, Jawdat. “People here believe our boys shouldn’t fight outside the country,” he said. “They should fight only in defending the soil of the country.” Al-Kaseasbeh, 26, is one of eight siblings, four boys and four girls. Balloon crew draws closer to North America

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The pilots of a helium-filled balloon on a daring flight across the Pacific Ocean drew closer to North America as they attempt to break two world records. Accomplished balloon pilots Troy Bradley of the United States and Leonid Tiukhtyaev of Russia are expected to cross into North America sometime Thursday evening and are on course to break a distance record that has stood for more than three decades. They’re also looking to break the flight-duration record set in 1978. They still have some distance to go, however. They are planning to cross over the Canadian Rockies and land somewhere in the northern U.S., possibly Montana or North Dakota, on Saturday morning. No one has crossed the Pacific Ocean in a gas balloon since 1981. To break the distance record, the balloonists need exceed the current records by 1 percent — meaning they need to travel 5,260 miles (8465 kilometers). Another important record is the duration of the flight, set in 1978 when Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman made the first trans-Atlantic balloon flight. That re-

cord of 137 hours aloft in a traditional gas balloon is considered the “holy grail” of ballooning achievements. The pilots on the current flight are at about 100 hours. The balloon, made up of a massive envelope and a specially-designed carbon fiber-composite capsule, is capable of staying aloft for as many as 10 days. If they get that far, the team will notify the National Aeronautics Association of its claim within seven days of landing and all the documentation will be forwarded to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale for consideration. The process can take weeks, but the team will have plenty of data to present since the balloon is outfitted with an array of monitors and other instruments. Since there’s no certainty about where the balloon will touch down, the head of the recovery effort has established a network of balloonists across the U.S. and in southern Canada who can serve as chase crews, those who are on the ground to help with tethering the capsule and rounding up the balloon’s envelope as it deflates. INDONESIA French co-pilot flying AirAsia jet before crash

JAKARTA - The French first officer of an AirAsia passenger jet that crashed into the sea last month was at the controls just prior to the accident, Indonesia’s lead investigator said on Thursday. Data from the black box flight data recorder has provided the accident probe with a “pretty clear picture” of what happened in the last moments of AirAsia Flight QZ8501, but officials offered few details. The Airbus A320 vanished from radar screens in bad weather on Dec. 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Indonesia’s second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore. All 162 people on board were killed. “The second-in-command, popularly known as the co-pilot, who usually sits to the right of the cockpit. At the time, he was flying the plane,” said head National Transport Safety Committee (NTSC) investigator Mardjono Siswosuwarno, referring to first officer Remi Plesel. “The captain, sitting to the left, was the pilot monitoring.” Captain Iriyanto, 53, was believed to have taken over control of the aircraft from Plesel when it started to ascend and then descend sharply, officials said. Seven foreigners to be execute after clemency rejected JAKARTA - Indonesia is ready to execute seven foreign drug convicts on death row after their appeals for presidential clemency were rejected, an official said, in a move certain to set Jakarta on a collision course with international allies. They include two Australian leaders of the “Bali Nine” drugsmuggling gang, who have been on death row for almost a decade. The pair lost their appeals in December and earlier this month. A spokesman for the attorney-general’s office revealed late Wednesday that a further five foreigners, from countries including France, Brazil, Nigeria and Ghana, have also lost their appeals. Four Indonesians -- only one of

them convicted of drugs offences -had also lost their bid for clemency. “The attorney general’s office now has 11 convicts on death row ready to be executed,” spokesman Tony Spontana said late Wednesday. Indonesia earlier this month executed six drug offenders, including five foreigners, prompting a furious Brazil and the Netherlands -- whose citizens were among those put to death -- to recall their ambassadors. Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders described all six of those deaths as “terribly sad”, adding: “My heart goes out to their families, for whom this is marks a dramatic end to years of uncertainty.” The Australians set to be executed, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, were arrested in 2005 for attempting to smuggle eight

kilograms (18 pounds) of heroin out of Indonesia. Sukumaran’s appeal for clemency was rejected in December, and Chan’s was rejected earlier this month. That removed the final hurdle to put the pair to death, as Indonesian authorities said they must be executed together as they had committed their crime together. Vultures circling as crisis clubs Milan and Parma meet MILAN - Parma coach Roberto Donadoni says the vultures are circling his stricken Serie A side but he has no intention of resigning. Bottom-of-the-table Parma, mired in both financial problems and surrounded by a continuing mystery over their new owners, visit AC Milan on Sunday in a meeting of crisis clubs. Milan, who like Parma were knocked out of the Coppa Italia in midweek, have dropped to joint 10th after failing to win a match since the Christmas break, although the club have dismissed suggestions that coach Filippo Inzaghi’s job is in danger. Their problems pale into insignificance compared to Parma, however, who have nine points after losing 16 out of 20 games and lost a key relegation match at home to Cesena last week. Parma’s troubles were exposed on Monday when they parted company with volatile striker Antonio Cassano who said he was owed several month’s wages. “Every time they told us we would be paid tomorrow and the next day it was tomorrow again.
