LOS ANGELES - The “Boxtrolls” hit the United States this weekend, bringing the cute underground garbage creatures which have already taken their native Britain by storm to the other side of the pond. The 3D animated fantasy, based on bestselling British children’s book “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow, tells the story of a boy brought up by gentle monsters, chased mercilessly by the human townsfolk who live above them. The Boxtrolls symbolize “any community that is the bottom rung of the ladder,” said the film’s producer Travis Knight. He is also the head of Laika, the studio behind the film, and its predecessors “Coraline” and “Paranorman.”

TOKYO — Rescue workers have found 30 or more people unconscious and believed to be dead near the peak of an erupting volcano in central Japan, local government and police said.

Nagano prefecture posted on its website that about 30 people had heart and lung failure, the customary way for Japanese authorities to describe a body until police doctors can examine it. At least four of the victims were being brought down Sunday afternoon. A Nagano police official described the number as more than 30.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly. Mount Ontake in central Japan erupted shortly before noon Saturday, spewing large white plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and blanketing the surrounding area in ash. The mountain is a popular climbing destination, and at least
250 people were initially trapped on the slopes, though most made their way down by Saturday night. Before the unconscious victims were found, Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said that 45 people had been reported missing. The exact location of the bodies and their identities were not immediately known. Keita Ushimaru, an official in nearby Kiso town, said that Nagano crisis management officials had informed the town that at least four people with heart and lung failure were being brought down
to the town, and that there were others in the same condition. The journey was expected to take about three hours. Rescue workers were also trying to help injured people and others who had been stranded o n t h e m o u n t a i n ove r n i g h t , many taking refuge in mountain lodges. Some were unable to descend on their own, or unwilling to take the risk. Military helicopters plucked seven people off the mountainside earlier Sunday, and workers were helping others make their way
down the slopes. One woman was being carried on a stretcher, and a man with a broken arm was walking down. Seven people were picked up in three helicopter trips, said Defense Ministry official Toshihiko Muraki. All are conscious and can walk, though details of their conditions were unclear, he said. Japanese television footage showed a soldier descending from a helicopter to an ash-covered slope, helping latch on a man and then the two of them being pulled up.

DENPASAR - Forum of Balinese People Rejecting Reclamation (ForBALI) came down again to the road by holding a rally rejecting the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and demanded the revocation of the Presidential Regulation No.51/2014. Hundreds of ForBALI mass dominated by college students and customary youth clubs moved from the Eastern Parking Lot of Bajra Sandhi, Renon. Without any command or promise of something, they immediately approached the march of ForBALI. Even, the elementary school students were participated in singing the song entitled “Bali Rejects Reclamation” when the mass of ForBALI made a speech in front of the monument. After making a speech in front of the monument, the mass of ForBALI moved again towards the governor’s office. Although the office was closed and guarded by police, it did not discourage them to express rejection against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

EDINBURGH — Scotland has made headlines lately with voters rejecting independence and choosing instead to remain part of the United Kingdom. Visitors will naturally be curious about the centuries of history that led to Scotland’s distinct culture. And a visit to the country’s capital, Edinburgh, with its historic 16th century tenements and grandiose 19th century town houses, is a tale of two cities in one. More than 600 years of history seep from every pore of Edinburgh’s volcanic foundations. Tales of genius and enlightenment are mingled with those of body-snatchers, witches and revolutionaries. The Old Town, dominated by the imposing medieval battlements of Edinburgh Castle, runs downhill along the Royal Mile stretching from the castle to the Queen’s official Scottish residence of Holyrood Palace. Airport authorities spotted Naumann looking pale and acting suspiciously upon his arrival so decided to conduct a body search. They found 11 capsules containing 201 grams (7 ounces) of cocaine in his underwear as well as six capsules weighing 38 grams of the drugs he had swallowed, Utomo said. The German embassy in Jakarta could not immediately be reached for comment.
Foreigners are regularly caught with drugs on Bali and a death sentence can be imposed on those found trying to smuggle drugs weighing more than five grams onto the popular holiday island. British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January last year after cocaine with an estimated street value of $2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on a flight from Bangkok.

BANGLI - The interest of young people in Bangli County to get involved in the profession as farmer is fairly minimal. Those willing to work in paddy fields mostly have aged over 50 years. Such lack for interest among the young people is kindled by the fact that such profession is considered less promising. As recognized by one of the field extension officers at Bunutin village, Bangli, Wayan Sadia, on Thursday (Sep 25), on average the farmers were quite
old, namely over 50 years. Very few young people were found to have interest in pursuing profession as farmers. Even, if it was presented in percentage, the
ratio of old to young farmers in Bangli roughly reached around 70:30 percent. “A lot of young people considered that working in the fields is not promising. So, they prefer to work in other sectors,” he said. In fact, such condition often became an obstacle for him to work as field extension officer in providing the outreach. When providing the outreach, the participating farmers were
dominated by the elderly who were hard at hearing. So, the direction delivered by the extension officers could not be received maximally. Moreover, their response to implement the direction of extension officers tended to be slow. Aside from such conditions, the presence of farmland conversion into residential building area lately was also recognized by Sadia as another obstacle frequently
encountered in the field. Since the large number of farmlands converted, it would automatically reduce the paddy field area. Karpiana said that the use of hazardous substances by traders was usually intended to make the food look more attractive. The text of the deal, which is 1,600 pages long, was published and now the long ratification process will begin, amid lingering concerns from some EU member states. Germany, in particular, has pressed for a contentious arbitration mechanism to be excluded from both the Canada deal and an eventual EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. The “investor-state dispute settlement” provision will allow private investors to sue governments if they feel local laws threatened their investments, and idea opposed in Berlin. Romania and Bulgaria may also try to block the deal because their citizens are required to have visas to travel to Canada, reportedly to stop a feared wave of refugee claims by ethnic Roma. But EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht warned a German newspaper on Thursday that no changes can be made to the deal without killing it. “If we re-open negotiations on CETA (the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement), the deal will be dead,” De Gucht told the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Thursday. At a joint press conference in Ottawa on Friday with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the pact “was fully backed by all member states of the European Union including Germany.” “It would be very strange,” he added, if Germany tried to block the deal which will benefit Germany the most as the EU’s largest economy and exporter. WASHINGTON - The US economy grew at the fastest pace since 2011 in the second quarter, far offsetting the first-quarter’s dive as the recovery picks up, revisions showed Friday. Gross domestic product surged at an annual rate of 4.6 percent, the Commerce Department said, revising its previous 4.2 percent estimate. The upward revision matched economists’ expectations as data shows the economy is rebounding from the first quarter’s 2.1 percent contraction, blamed in part on unusually severe winter weather that gripped large swaths of the country. The department said the stronger secondquarter growth number mainly reflected larger increases in business investment than previously estimated, notably in manufacturing structures, and in exports. “The American economy is firing on virtually all cylinders and cruising at a decidedly stronger rate than in recent years,” said Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.
The growth update raised the year-over-year rate to 2.6 percent, he said. “That’s a decidedly firmer growth track than the 2.1 percent norm in the first four years of the recovery from the Great Recession.” Consumer spending, the main driver of US economic activity, rose a moderate 2.5 percent, about double the first quarter’s gain and not significantly changed in the update. An upward revision to spending on health care services was offset by downward revisions to other services. Business investment jumped 9.7 percent and exports surged 11.1 percent, swinging from a drop of 9.2 percent in the prior quarter. “International trade will be driving much of the quarter-to-quarter volatility through at least 2015, with declining growth in exports and stronger growth in imports,” said Doug Handler, chief US economist at IHS Global
Insight. “This is due to a strong US economy and the recent and expected additional appreciation in the dollar.” Still, inflation remains well below the Federal Reserve’s longer-term 2.0 percent target. When entering harvest season, the price of grape reached IDR 5,000 per kilogram, while beyond the season c reached IDR 10,000 to IDR 15,000 per kilogram. “Usually, the grape in our vineyard has been booked by collector. When entering harvest season, collectors began working to collect the grape to be stored in warehouse. Afterward, the grape is sold to Java and surrounding regions,” she said. She explained that the current land cultivated reached 2,500 square meters, where the vine was entirely
dominated by plants of four years old. She claimed to have faced harvest failure for several times due to pest attack. To that end, she prevented the development of caterpillars by spraying pesticides regularly. “From the 2,500 square meters of vineyard, I harvested for three times a year and in each harvest could get 2 tons. In the past, I once experienced a crop failure due to armyworm, pod borers and rainy season when starting harvest. It was presented in the art performance at the Maha Bandana event at the Puputan Badung Square, Friday night (Sep 26). The gamelan troupe really made an appropriate performance in accordance with the classical theme featured. In terms of personnel, the troupe also showed a mix of the old and young gamelan musicians showing regeneration to preserve the ancient gamelan music. At that time, the Werdhi Swara gamelan troupe featured a number of classical gamelan music compositions commonly used to accompany Pitri Yajña ceremony (such as cremation) and Gabor Dance. A number of classical gamelan compositions owned include the Lilit Panji Alit, Lilit Nyora, Lilit Warga Sari, Lilit Panji Cinada, Lilit Panji Demung and Sih Miring. All the gamelan compositions are still used by the gamelan troupe of Kedaton hamlet, Kesiman, until now. The troupe is now composed of 25 people and has a leadership elected every 2 years. According to chief of the gamelan troupe, I Wayan Turun, the gamelan instrument was made sacred by local community. Existence of the gamelan troupe was begun with the village competition in the provincial level in 1987. Even, it was the only gong saron listed at Petilan Kesiman. So, it was natural when people held a panileman or mamukur ritual, the troupe would pay devotional performance for the whole night and the show even made to outside the city of Denpasar. The troupe also frequently appeared in the Bali Arts Festival. Historically, the gong saron or gong luang had been existed during the administration of King Udayana as mentioned in the Purana Pura inscription. In addition, the Pura Kedaton and Abasan inscription in Banjarangkan, Klungkung also mentioned and explained in details about the gamelan. Chief of Kedaton Kesiman customary hamlet, AA Putu Yudana Putra, was proud because together with the hamlet residents he could preserve the traditional gamelan music. In addition to be presented during ritual events in Bali, it was also used as a means to unite and pass on the tradition to young generation of local hamlet. To that end, one of the Bali local wisdoms could be preserved. Senior figure of the gong saron gamelan troupe of Kedaton, I Wayan Turun, explained that when Kesiman represented Denpasar in the village competition at provincial level, the Kedaton hamlet was appointed to make a mamukur procession or Pitri Yajña where the ritual should be accompanied by gong saron or gong luang gamelan music composition. Meanwhile, the hamlet had not owned a gamelan set of gong saron. His residents then held a meeting with senior figure of Pemayun Palace of Kesiman and it was agreed to borrow timbung gamelan currently stored at the home of the artist Ebuh at Gelogor. The timbung gamelan set made of bamboo was used as the substitute of the gong saron gamelan set. After the competition, the senior royal figure and local residents held subsequent meeting to plan the purchase of gong luang gamelan set considering it had a very important function for Hindu ritual. The idea was supported by senior royal figure that one day the residents would require the gong luang gamelan set. After holding fundraising, the Kedaton hamlet purchased gong luang set at IDR 3,750,000 at the time. The gamelan set was made by Pande Sukerta from Blahbatuh village (Gianyar), while the design was worked on by I Tedun from Sangsi Singapadu. After having owned the gamelan set, the Kedaton residents established a gamelan troupe and brought in instructor named Pan Muji. (sue)

Doctors Without Borders, which has more Ebola clinics than anyone, currently has 248 foreign aid workers in the region. President Barack Obama has ordered up to 3,000 U.S. military personnel to West Africa to train health workers and build more than a dozen 100-bed field hospitals, including reserved sections for infected aid workers in Liberia. Dr. Joanne Liu, international president of Doctors Without Borders, urged world leaders this week to take “immediate action.” “The reality on the ground today is this: The promised surge has not yet delivered,” she said.

JAKARTA - Four workers were killed Saturday in an accident at a US-controlled copper and gold mine in Indonesia’s remote Papua province, the company said, the latest safetyrelated incident at the site. A light vehicle carrying nine passengers collided with a giant haulage truck at Freeport-McMoRan’s huge Grasberg mine, according to a company statement. The firm added that it has temporarily suspended open-pit mining activities at Grasberg pending an investigation. Grasberg, one of the biggest copper and gold mines in the world, has been plagued by accidents and production problems in recent years.
In May last year, a training tunnel collapsed killing 28 miners as they took part in a safety course in one of Indonesia’s worst-ever mining accidents. Another worker died in December last year when rocks fell from a machine, crushing him. In 2011 a three-month strike crippled production at the mine, and workers only halted the industrial action once Freeport agreed to a huge pay rise.

BANDA ACEH - Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province passed a law Saturday making gay sex punishable by 100 lashes of the cane, in a decision described by rights activists as “an enormous step backwards”. Aceh, the only part of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation that is allowed to implement Islamic sharia law, already carries out public canings for gambling, drinking alcohol and fraternising with the opposite sex outside of marriage. Lawmakers began deliberations Friday night and unanimously agreed in the early hours of Saturday to pass the law. The law explicitly outlaws anal sex between men and “the rubbing of body parts between women for stimulation”, making homosexuality technically illegal for the first time in Aceh. Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of the country, which mainly follows a criminal code from the Netherlands, Indonesia’s former colonial ruler. Amnesty International, which has called for an end to caning in Aceh, asked that the bylaw be immediately repealed. “The criminalisation of individuals based on their sexual orientation is a huge blow for equality in Indonesia,” said Amnesty International’s AsiaPacific director Richard Bennett, who added that it would increase “the climate of homophobia, fear and harassment many in Aceh are already facing”. But Ramli Sulaiman, a local lawmaker who heads the commission that drafted the bill, said all relevant agencies in Jakarta had given it the green light. Spokesman for the leading Aceh Party, Muhammad Harun, said the bylaw made sharia law in Aceh more complete. “This bylaw has been highly anticipated by the people of Aceh, who have long wanted to see complete Islamic law on the veranda of Mecca,” he said after the session, using a description often used for the province.

The research conducted by Ma Chung University was funded by Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation through Ma Chung Research Center for Photosynthetic Pigments (MCRPP). Servicing substance halted Rosberg in Singapore
Nico Rosberg’s retirement from the Singapore Grand Prix was caused by a freak substance contamination creating an electronics short circuit in his Mercedes Formula 1 car, AUTOSPORT has learned. Following the problems that forced the 2014 F1 title contender out of the Marina Bay race, Mercedes flew the faulty steering column parts back to its Brackley factory for detailed analysis this week. That intense forensic investigation revealed that the steering column electronics were contaminated with an unspecified foreign substance that is used during pre-event servicing procedures. The presence of the substance went undetected throughout the Singapore GP weekend and there had been no hint of any problems prior to Rosberg sitting in the car shortly before the start of the race. However, once the problem struck it produced an intermittent short circuit that meant Rosberg could not control the clutch or
change engine settings. The lack of controls - and specifically having no clutch for his pitstop - meant he had to retire from the race. The circumstances surrounding Rosberg’s failure are particularly mystifying because Mercedes has used the same steering column electronics design - and same pre-event servicing procedures - since 2008 without a single problem before. Mercedes is taking no risks from now on, however, and has elected to use completely fresh parts for the final five races of the season. Team boss Toto Wolff made it clear after the Singapore race that it was surprising Mercedes continued to suffer reliability problems despite ramping up its efforts in this area. “We have a great reliability team,” he said. “This is a group of people who are really dedicated to reliability and I am really proud of them. “So it is even more astonishing we keep having those issues. They need to get a grip, but this takes time.”

Servicing substance halted Rosberg in Singapore
Nico Rosberg’s retirement from the Singapore Grand Prix was caused by a freak substance contamination creating an electronics short circuit in his Mercedes Formula 1 car, AUTOSPORT has learned. Following the problems that forced the 2014 F1 title contender out of the Marina Bay race, Mercedes flew the faulty steering column parts back to its Brackley factory for detailed analysis this week. That intense forensic investigation revealed that the steering column electronics were contaminated with an unspecified foreign substance that is used during pre-event servicing procedures. The presence of the substance went undetected throughout the Singapore GP weekend and there had been no hint of any problems prior to Rosberg sitting in the car shortly before the start of the race. However, once the problem struck it produced an intermittent short circuit that meant Rosberg could not control the clutch or
change engine settings. The lack of controls - and specifically having no clutch for his pitstop - meant he had to retire from the race. The circumstances surrounding Rosberg’s failure are particularly mystifying because Mercedes has used the same steering column electronics design - and same pre-event servicing procedures - since 2008 without a single problem before. Mercedes is taking no risks from now on, however, and has elected to use completely fresh parts for the final five races of the season. Team boss Toto Wolff made it clear after the Singapore race that it was surprising Mercedes continued to suffer reliability problems despite ramping up its efforts in this area. “We have a great reliability team,” he said. “This is a group of people who are really dedicated to reliability and I am really proud of them. “So it is even more astonishing we keep having those issues. They need to get a grip, but this takes time.”

The latest seizure was from the luggage of two passengers arriving at the Shanghai airport from Tokyo, one of them Chinese and one of them Japanese, a woman at the Shanghai customs agency said, confirming state media reports. She said hundreds more have been confiscated individually from passengers who did not declare them. Apple delayed its original plans to introduce the iPhone 6 in China this month, but did not comment on reports that it still hadn’t received Chinese regulatory approval. The already-thriving black market for the phones in China, where Apple competes with lessexpensive alternatives from local powerhouse Xiaomi, plus Lenovo and Samsung, has drawn a rebuke in Chinese state media. dreaded disease may close unless promises of additional assistance immediately become reality. The existing bed capacity for Ebola patients in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea and Nigeria is about 820, well short of the 2,900 beds that are currently needed, according to the World Health Organization. Recently 737 beds were pledged by countries. Yet even after the promised treatment facilities are built, they will still be at least 2,100 beds short. The shortage of health workers is also great. WHO has estimated that 1,000 to 2,000 international health workers are needed in West Africa. More than local 200 health workers have died of Ebola trying to save patients, complicating recruitment efforts. Doctors Without Borders, which has more Ebola clinics than anyone, currently has 248 foreign aid workers in the region. President Barack Obama has ordered up to 3,000 U.S. military personnel to West Africa to train health workers and build more than a dozen 100-bed field hospitals, including reserved sections for infected aid workers in Liberia. Dr. Joanne Liu, international president of Doctors Without Borders, urged world leaders this week to take “immediate action.” “The reality on the ground today is this: The promised surge has not yet delivered,” she said.

BANDA ACEH - Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province passed a law Saturday making gay sex punishable by 100 lashes of the cane, in a decision described by rights activists as “an enormous step backwards”. Aceh, the only part of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation that is allowed to implement Islamic sharia law, already carries out public canings for gambling, drinking alcohol and fraternising with the opposite sex outside of marriage. Lawmakers began deliberations Friday night and unanimously agreed in the early hours of Saturday to pass the law. The law explicitly outlaws anal sex between men and “the rubbing of body parts between women for stimulation”, making homosexuality technically illegal for the first time in Aceh. Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of the country, which mainly follows a criminal code from the Netherlands, Indonesia’s former colonial ruler. Amnesty International, which has called for an end to caning in Aceh, asked that the bylaw be immediately repealed. “The criminalisation of individuals based on their sexual orientation is a huge blow for equality in Indonesia,” said Amnesty International’s AsiaPacific director Richard Bennett, who added that it would increase “the climate of homophobia, fear and harassment many in Aceh are already facing”. The text of the deal, which is 1,600 pages long, was published and now the long ratification process will begin, amid lingering concerns from some EU member states. Germany, in particular, has pressed for a contentious arbitration mechanism to be excluded from both the Canada deal and an eventual EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Romania and Bulgaria may also try to block the deal because their citizens are required to have visas to travel to Canada, reportedly to stop a feared wave of refugee claims by ethnic Roma. But EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht warned a German newspaper on Thursday that no changes can be made to the deal without killing it. “If we re-open negotiations on CETA (the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement), the deal will be dead,” De Gucht told the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Thursday. WASHINGTON - The US economy grew at the fastest pace since 2011 in the second quarter, far offsetting the first-quarter’s dive as the recovery picks up, revisions showed Friday. Gross domestic product surged at an annual rate of 4.6 percent, the Commerce Department said, revising its previous 4.2 percent estimate. The upward revision matched economists’ expectations as data shows the economy is rebounding from the first quarter’s 2.1 percent contraction, blamed in part on unusually severe winter weather that gripped large swaths of the country. The department said the stronger secondquarter growth number mainly reflected larger increases in business investment than previously estimated, notably in manufacturing structures, and in exports. “The American economy is firing on virtually all cylinders and cruising at a decidedly stronger rate than in recent years,” said Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.
The growth update raised the year-over-year rate to 2.6 percent, he said. “That’s a decidedly firmer growth track than the 2.1 percent norm in the first four years of the recovery from the Great Recession.” Consumer spending, the main driver of US economic activity, rose a moderate 2.5 percent, about double the first quarter’s gain and not significantly changed in the update. An upward revision to spending on health care services was offset by downward revisions to other services. Business investment jumped 9.7 percent and exports surged 11.1 percent, swinging from a drop of 9.2 percent in the prior quarter. “International trade will be driving much of the quarter-to-quarter volatility through at least 2015, with declining growth in exports and stronger growth in imports,” said Doug Handler, chief US economist at IHS Global
Insight. “This is due to a strong US economy and the recent and expected additional appreciation in the dollar.” Still, inflation remains well below the Federal Reserve’s longer-term 2.0 percent target. The White House welcomed the brisk growth numbers. Furman said, however, there was “more work to do to both boost growth and ensure that growth translates into greater financial security for working families,” reaffirming Obama’s commitment to supporting investments in job creation and encouraging higher worker pay. Although the jobless rate has dropped to 6.1 percent and job creation has picked up, a large number of people are out of the job market or underemployed, and wages have remain relatively flat since the severe recession ended in mid-2009.

A grape grower, Putu Anik, 32, from Ambengan hamlet, Banjar village, said the price of grape at the market tended to be stable and had not showed an increase. When entering harvest season, the price of grape reached IDR 5,000 per kilogram, while beyond the season c reached IDR 10,000 to IDR 15,000 per kilogram. “Usually, the grape in our vineyard has been booked by collector. When entering harvest season, collectors began working to collect the grape to be stored in warehouse. Afterward, the grape is sold to Java and surrounding regions,” she said. She explained that the current land cultivated reached 2,500 square meters, where the vine was entirely
dominated by plants of four years old. She claimed to have faced harvest failure for several times due to pest attack. To that end, she prevented the development of caterpillars by spraying pesticides regularly. “From the 2,500 square meters of vineyard, I harvested for three times a year and in each harvest could get 2 tons. DENPASAR - Evidently the Werdi Budaya gong saron gamelan troupe of Kedaton hamlet, Kesiman, showed that the gong saron gamelan instrument could accompany the Gabor Dance. It was presented in the art performance at the Maha Bandana event at the Puputan Badung Square, Friday night (Sep 26). The gamelan troupe really made an appropriate performance in accordance with the classical theme featured. In terms of personnel, the troupe also showed a mix of the old and young gamelan musicians showing regeneration to preserve the ancient gamelan music. At that time, the Werdhi Swara gamelan troupe featured a number of classical gamelan music compositions commonly used to accompany Pitri Yajña ceremony (such as cremation) and Gabor Dance. A number of classical gamelan compositions owned include the Lilit Panji Alit, Lilit Nyora, Lilit Warga Sari, Lilit Panji Cinada, Lilit Panji Demung and Sih Miring. All the gamelan compositions are still used by the gamelan troupe of Kedaton hamlet, Kesiman, until now. The troupe is now composed of 25 people and has a leadership elected every 2 years. According to chief of the gamelan troupe, I Wayan Turun, the gamelan instrument was made sacred by local community. Existence of the gamelan troupe was begun with the village competition in the provincial level in 1987. Even, it was the only gong saron listed at Petilan Kesiman. So, it was natural when people held a panileman or mamukur ritual, the troupe would pay devotional performance for the whole night and the show even made to outside the city of Denpasar. The troupe also frequently appeared in the Bali Arts Festival. Historically, the gong saron or gong luang had been existed during the administration of King Udayana as mentioned in the Purana Pura inscription. In addition, the Pura Kedaton and Abasan inscription in Banjarangkan, Klungkung also mentioned and explained in details about the gamelan. Chief of Kedaton Kesiman customary hamlet, AA Putu Yudana Putra, was proud because together with the hamlet residents he could preserve the traditional gamelan music. In addition to be presented during ritual events in Bali, it was also used as a means to unite and pass on the tradition to young generation of local hamlet. To that end, one of the Bali local wisdoms could be preserved. Senior figure of the gong saron gamelan troupe of Kedaton, I Wayan Turun, explained that when Kesiman represented Denpasar in the village competition at provincial level, the Kedaton hamlet was appointed to make a mamukur procession or Pitri Yajña where the ritual should be accompanied by gong saron or gong luang gamelan music composition. Meanwhile, the hamlet had not owned a gamelan set of gong saron. His residents then held a meeting with senior figure of Pemayun Palace of Kesiman and it was agreed to borrow timbung gamelan currently stored at the home of the artist Ebuh at Gelogor. The timbung gamelan set made of bamboo was used as the substitute of the gong saron gamelan set. After the competition, the senior royal figure and local residents held subsequent meeting to plan the purchase of gong luang gamelan set considering it had a very important function for Hindu ritual. The idea was supported by senior royal figure that one day the residents would require the gong luang gamelan set. After holding fundraising, the Kedaton hamlet purchased gong luang set at IDR 3,750,000 at the time. The gamelan set was made by Pande Sukerta from Blahbatuh village (Gianyar), while the design was worked on by I Tedun from Sangsi Singapadu. After having owned the gamelan set, the Kedaton residents established a gamelan troupe and brought in instructor named Pan Muji. (sue)

BANGLI - The interest of young people in Bangli County to get involved in the profession as farmer is fairly minimal. Those willing to work in paddy fields mostly have aged over 50 years. Such lack for interest among the young people is kindled by the fact that such profession is considered less promising. As recognized by one of the field extension officers at Bunutin village, Bangli, Wayan Sadia, on Thursday (Sep 25), on average the farmers were quite
old, namely over 50 years. Very few young people were found to have interest in pursuing profession as farmers. Even, if it was presented in percentage, the
ratio of old to young farmers in Bangli roughly reached around 70:30 percent. “A lot of young people considered that working in the fields is not promising. So, they prefer to work in other sectors,” he said. In fact, such condition often became an obstacle for him to work as field extension officer in providing the outreach. When providing the outreach, the participating farmers were
dominated by the elderly who were hard at hearing. So, the direction delivered by the extension officers could not be received maximally. Moreover, their response to implement the direction of extension officers tended to be slow. Aside from such conditions, the presence of farmland conversion into residential building area lately was also recognized by Sadia as another obstacle frequently
encountered in the field. Since the large number of farmlands converted, it would automatically reduce the paddy field area. With the declining acreage, it significantly affected the decreasing interest of young generation to work in the paddy fields. “Small number of paddy field and the must to wait for harvest time make them prefer to work in other sectors, such as trade, etc.,” he added. ASEAN subsequently has two extreme choices: to become a global factory by creating a highly competitive production and investment environment or to become a global mall, noting the expanding export of consumption products from around the world to ASEAN region,” Muhammad Nawir Messi, the chairman of the Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition (KPPU) of Indonesia, said in his opening remarks. To be competitive, progress has to be made in dealing with the competition law and policy in the region, Messi was quoted as saying in a press statement issued by the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat, here, Saturday. ASEAN Member States shared their views and experiences on the means to expedite the drafting and
consultation process currently ongoing in Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and the Philippines. In accordance with the commitments under the Blueprint for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), all Member States are expected to have introduced CPL by 2015. The workshop addressed common challenges in the enactment of CPL, along with possible approaches to build up the expertise and enforcement record of the competition agency. The Workshop was facilitated by Hassan Qaqaya and Pierre Horna from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as well as Prof. Eberhard Feess, an economist from Germany, who provided their expertise and international experiences on competition law design and enforcement. The workshop was organized with support from the ASEAN Secretariat and the project “Competition Policy and Law in ASEAN” (CPL) which is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

He could be charged with drug trafficking, for which the maximum penalty is a death sentence and 10 billion rupiah ($832,000) fine, Bali customs official Djarot Utomo said. “He admitted that he was only a courier,” and would get $5,000 as payment, Utomo said.
Airport authorities spotted Naumann looking pale and acting suspiciously upon his arrival so decided to conduct a body search. They found 11 capsules containing 201 grams (7 ounces) of cocaine in his underwear as well as six capsules weighing 38 grams of the drugs he had swallowed, Utomo said. The German embassy in Jakarta could not immediately be reached for comment.
Foreigners are regularly caught with drugs on Bali and a death sentence can be imposed on those found trying to smuggle drugs weighing more than five grams onto the popular holiday island. British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January last year after cocaine with an estimated street value of $2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on a flight from Bangkok.

DENPASAR - Forum of Balinese People Rejecting Reclamation (ForBALI) came down again to the road by holding a rally rejecting the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and demanded the revocation of the Presidential Regulation No.51/2014. Hundreds of ForBALI mass dominated by college students and customary youth clubs moved from the Eastern Parking Lot of Bajra Sandhi, Renon. Without any command or promise of something, they immediately approached the march of ForBALI. Even, the elementary school students were participated in singing the song entitled “Bali Rejects Reclamation” when the mass of ForBALI made a speech in front of the monument. After making a speech in front of the monument, the mass of ForBALI moved again towards the governor’s office. Although the office was closed and guarded by police, it did not discourage them to express rejection against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The 3D animated fantasy, based on bestselling British children’s book “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow, tells the story of a boy brought up by gentle monsters, chased mercilessly by the human townsfolk who live above them. TOKYO — Rescue workers have found 30 or more people unconscious and believed to be dead near the peak of an erupting volcano in central Japan, local government and police said.

Nagano prefecture posted on its website that about 30 people had heart and lung failure, the customary way for Japanese authorities to describe a body until police doctors can examine it. At least four of the victims were being brought down Sunday afternoon. A Nagano police official described the number as more than 30.
He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly. Mount Ontake in central Japan erupted shortly before noon Saturday, spewing large white plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and blanketing the surrounding area in ash. The mountain is a popular climbing destination, and at least
250 people were initially trapped on the slopes, though most made their way down by Saturday night. Before the unconscious victims were found, Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said that 45 people had been reported missing. The exact location of the bodies and their identities were not immediately known. Keita Ushimaru, an official in nearby Kiso town, said that Nagano crisis management officials had informed the town that at least four people with heart and lung failure were being brought down
to the town, and that there were others in the same condition. The journey was expected to take about three hours. Rescue workers were also trying to help injured people and others who had been stranded o n t h e m o u n t a i n ove r n i g h t , many taking refuge in mountain lodges. Some were unable to descend on their own, or unwilling to take the risk. Military helicopters plucked seven people off the mountainside earlier Sunday, and workers were helping others make their way
down the slopes. One woman was being carried on a stretcher, and a man with a broken arm was walking down. Seven people were picked up in three helicopter trips, said Defense Ministry official Toshihiko Muraki. All are conscious and can walk, though details of their conditions were unclear, he said. Japanese television footage showed a soldier descending from a helicopter to an ash-covered slope, helping latch on a man and then the two of them being pulled up.
