NEW YORK - Britney Spears is hitting up pop culture one more time, releasing a new album, singing retro karaoke hits and about to take the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) stage for the first time since 2007.

Spears, 34, who became a teen pop phenomenon with breathy, sexually-charged hits like “Toxic” and “Oops!..I Did it Again,” released new album “Glory” on Friday ahead of a much anticipated return to the VMA show on Sunday in New York. She also became the latest superstar to ride, sing and chat with U.S. talk show host James Corden for his viral “Carpool Karaoke” segment, where both donned the schoolgirl uniforms that shot her to fame as a 16-year old in the 1998 music video for “... Baby One More Time.” Spears dominated pop music before undergoing a personal and career meltdown in 2006-2007 that included shaving her signature blonde locks, losing custody of her two children and being placed under a court-ordered conservatorship. She made a comeback in late 2008 and for the past three years has been performing a nightly show in Las Vegas. Badung Tourism keep on improving

As one of the favorite tourism destination in Bali, Badung Regency keeps on improving. Nowadays, tourism is not only about quantity but also the quality. In increasing the quality, the tourism practitioners must consider the environment support, preserving the culture and managing the destination. The Head of Badung Tourism Department Cokorda Raka Darmawan said that everyone involved in the tourism business must work together, hand in hand because tourism is the leading sector in Badung economics. “We cannot only depend on the government in managing tourism in Badung. All components of tourism including the people in Badung must also take part. They can give us suggestion that can make the tourism better. Wonderful Indonesia is the brand of national tourism,” he said. Raka Darmawan also stated that the government will increase

the effort to support the Wonderful Indonesia program by improving the tourism objects and the quality of the human resources. Kites competition enlivens Sanur Village Festival

KITES competition in a series of the Sanur Village Festival was officially opened on Mertasari Beach, Sanur, Saturday (Aug. 27). For this year, it is the calendar for Bali, while next year is for international championship. The SVF has been made into the agenda of biennial international festival, where people from around the world are now getting ready to make preparation and come to the Sanur international kite festival

next year. For this year, the participants came from across Bali, like Karangasem in the easternmost region of Bali where they want to show off their skill in the sky of Sanur.

According to Kadek, there are three categories competed in the event, namely children, teenage and adult category. In terms of its design, there are pecukan, janggan, bebean, typical bebean of Sanur, classic janggan (peacock janggan) and new creations. There is something special made in the kite competition in a series of the SVF, namely the presence of clas-

sical janggan or peacock janggan. The presence of the classic janggan kite is part of an effort to revive and maintain the presence of classical janggan as part of Balinese wisdom in the kite tradition. In the 1940s, the classic janggan kite was well known and very popular in Sanur. Based on this reason, the committee featured again this type of kite in the SVF competition.

Through the Sanur Village Festival, the creative space to preserve and develop kite is widely open. What has been done by the organizing committee to preserve the classic janggan like the typical bebean of Sanur, should be appreciated and fully supported in order to become a sustainable event, added Sidharta. Kite is the identity of Sanur village. The Sanur Kite Festival program both in Bali and international agenda has proved and given good reputation to the SVF event for Sanur and Bali. Two Foreign Women Play Balinese Puppet

WHEN Balinese women are reluctant to watch puppet show, foreign women are even interested in playing the shadow art made from cowhide. Moreover, the foreign women are never in doubt to present this traditional art of the Balinese Hindu community. The performance is more creative because it is spoken in four languages, namely Old Javanese, Balinese, Indonesian and English. The foreign women are Sonia, a puppeteer from the Czech Republic and Katie Harrel, puppeteer from the United States. These two foreigners performed the leather puppet show with storyline Arjuna Tapa at the 15th anniversary of Kembang Bali art studio, Saturday (Aug. 20). Although they are not as perfect as Balinese puppeteer, both female puppeteers are able to describe the play with language or motion of the puppets. Katie Harrel, a 27-year old woman from California, has been learning the puppetry art since May

2016 at Kembang Bali art studio. After attending class for 11 times, she is immediately able to make performance. Katie initially offered to learn puppetry by Nyoman Sumandhi when going to Tunjuk village immediately got interested. “I agreed with pleasure,” said Katie. She was happy with the offer especially the mission to master a number of Balinese arts is then widely open. Katie plays the Arjuna Tapa for about 30 minutes. Her play speaks four languages ??simultaneously namely English, Old Javanese, Indonesian and Balinese. Old Javanese language is used when playing the character kayonan (mountain) and some characters with slanted eyes, like Arjuna, gods and antagonistic demon Niwatakwaca. In the meantime, Indonesian and English are used for dialog of clowns like Twalen and Merdah. When both clowns make dialogue, foreign audience is made laugh. Katie is able to present jokes

by combining Old Javanese and English. “I have difficulties in speaking Old Javanese, so that I mix it with English. Besides, I am overwhelmed when playing puppet for war scene,” she explained. Balinese dialog is used for clowns Delem and Sangut. One of the phrases used is “Engken ci, cang kene (literally means, ‘how are you, I am as you see’). Dialogs spoken in English mixed with Balinese and Indonesian for the characters like Twalen, Merdah, Delem and Sangut often invite laughter of Katie’s colleagues of various nationalities coming to watch her show. With international language for the characters like clown, foreign audience can catch the ideas of Arjuna whose hermitage is disturbed by Niwatakawca. Arjuna who is meditating keeps silent and unwavering by the temptation of beautiful angel. Finally, he is bothered by a demon in the shape of boar posing the incarnation of Ni-

watakwaca. The show ends where Arjuna gets Cadu Sakti arrow from Lord Shiva. Unlike the case with Sonia, her appearance presents more Old Javanese and Czech language. In pronunciation, the vocals seem very rigid because she has just

been learning puppetry for a few weeks. In the show, Katie or Sonia is accompanied by two puppet takers and gender gamelan players. “I like to learn Balinese arts. With this puppet performance, I have got a new experience,” said Sonia. (015)

It’s an educational and entertaining show for children under 13 years old. No young generation interested in resuming agriculture

TABANAN - The formerly extensive paddy field areas at Mandung, Kerambitan, precisely near the Mandung landfill or Subak Dukuh Acak have now been besieged by buildings. Housing development proliferates and signposts carrying the announcement of land plots on sale are mounted in the area. The sale of paddy field land to developers mostly happens because there are no young generations having the interest in continuing the farming profession so that farmers choose to sell theirs. Chief of Subak Dukuh Acak, Wayan Suwendana, explained last Friday, other than no generation willing to continue the profession, farmers also sell their paddy field due to the difficulty to get irrigation water and urgent economic needs. Since belonging to rainfed paddy field area, farmers can only cultivate their land once a year. “Only this year we can cultivate twice a year because it still rains in this dry season,” he said. Nevertheless, to prevent the expanding land conversion, in 2012 the local customary village issued customary bylaw or awigawig prohibiting the paddy fields from being converted into housing development. While the current

mushrooming construction of the BTN housing built on paddy field area, according to Suwendana, they were already sold prior to the issuance of the customary bylaw. “The land was purchased by developers prior to that year, and they just built right now,” he said. Before converted into housing, the Subak Dukuh Acak spread across the area of 110 hectares and currently the remaining productive land approximately reaches 60 hectares. Not all of the lands sold have been converted into residential area, but some areas are converted into moor. “When calculated, so far the total residential building area reaches seven hectares,” he explained. He admitted that if there are no clear rules regarding spatial planning of development, over time the paddy fields in Tabanan will run out. Moreover, currently young people seem uninterested in getting involved in agricultural activities because it is considered less productive. To that end, Suwendana also hoped the government could create a program so that farming becomes a promising profession. Thus, younger generation will be willing to continue it. (kmb24)

A variety of skill trainings are provided in the prison with the capacity of 78 people but it is now occupied by 178 inmates. Amid the over-capacity prison, the inmates are given skill training to avoid boredom while serving their sentence. “So, the inmates are given the skills to make handicrafts. They are trained to make bowl, keben (bamboo basket), lamp, precast concrete brick and coconut leaf arrangement,” said Sutarno, Friday (Aug. 26). Sutarno admitted, the skills owned to make handcraft becomes a positive activity for the inmates. However, they have constraints in the matter of qualified space to do the activities. One the one hand, the

inmates realized the mistakes and violations committed against the law and they would like to improve themselves into better individual. At the same time, there are limited spaces to accommodate their positive activities. “I very much deplore for the coaching of their skills. Indeed the space is very limited. We have trouble in the matter of coaching venue. It is very narrow and we very much regret whereas the inmates have high potential to make handicraft,” he added. A number of exhibitions are often followed by representatives of the Singaraja Prison. The officers showed off the handicraft products of the inmates at the Denpasar Art Centre and in the performing arts

in urban areas. “Recently we exhibited the handicraft products of the inmates at the Denpasar Art Centre. We have involved ten inmates in the making of the handicrafts. They are special products made from timber like ice cream sticks. Making a handicraft requires high patience,” he said. He added that 50 percent of the proceeds from selling the handicraft are given to the inmates. “Their handicraft products are commonly marketed to the public. Then, we give them 50 percent while the rest for coaching fees,” he added. Sutarno recognized, other skills, the inmates are also provided with spiritual enlightenment and formation of positive mental. “Personality development is given according to their respective religion. Other than spiritual enlightenment, they are also given sports and arts without exception,” he said. (kmb34)

Awareness of no smoking needs growing DENPASAR - Public awareness of not smoking should be developed to reduce dependence on cigarettes. There have been many researches saying the hazards of smoking. One of the impacts is the risk of being exposed to lung cancer. “Please do not smoke because we’ve already made a no-smoking regional bylaw. It is just based on our awareness where all must be returned to us,” said the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, recently. According to him, the community dependence on cigarettes is inseparable from the price affordability of cigarettes today. On that account, he strongly supports if the central government realizes the plan to raise the price of cigarettes. “I agree to the price hike of cigarette, so that many people will not smoke. Unfortunately, the poor are also smoking. They should buy rice, but buy cigarettes,” he explained. However, continued Pastika, the price hike is not enough without raising public awareness not to smoke. They may even find some other ways like rolling cigarette by themselves. For example, they buy tobacco and then roll it with corn husk leaf that is more economical. “Do not think if the price rises, people will stop smoking. If they want to smoke, yes ... they will smoke. It is the problem. When the price is raised, they will buy tobacco as happened in the past. They will roll in what the so-called tingwe or stands for ngelinting dewe (selfrolling). People did it in the old days. At villages, people smoked by using corn husk leaf because they also planted tobacco,” he said. Pastika added that the policy of raising the price of cigarette should

DENPASAR — Right now cigarette industries are targeting novice smokers like children, teenagers and women. Approximately 22-27 percent of young people with the age range of 15-27 years are smoking. Teenage smokers of 13-15 years old showed a significant increase from 2007 reaching 36.3 percent. In other words, one in five junior high school students is now smoking.

Public awareness of not smoking should be developed to reduce dependence on cigarettes.

The number of novice smokers in Indonesia continues to rise and they are becoming the target of tobacco industries. In Bali, the percentage of teenage smokers reaches 22-27 percent. It happens because the tobacco industry has no more targets for old smokers considering that the addiction to smoking becomes so hard to quit. “On that account, we prefer to prevent the increase in the novice smokers,” said coordinator of the Bali Tobacco Control Initiative (BTCI) of the Public Health Study Program, Udayana University, Made Kerta Duana, recently. Indeed, the price hike plan of

cigarette has not been final. Nevertheless, he considered that with the price increase, at least it can prevent the emergence of novice smokers. “As positive benefit, higher cigarette price can prevent novice smokers among children, teenager and the poor,” he said. In many countries, the price of cigarette is high enough exceeding the range of IDR 50,000. Bangladesh police identify dead militants linked to Dhaka cafe attack

DHAKA - One of the three militants killed by Bangladeshi security forces on Saturday in connection with July’s Dhaka cafe attack came from a posh area of the city like some of the attackers and went to a prestigious foreign university, police said on Sunday. Towsif Hossain was from Dhaka’s leafy Dhanmondi neighbourhood and was missing since February. Like Nibras Islam, one of the five young and affluent cafe attackers who was killed after a 12-hour siege on July 2, Hossain had also attended the Kuala Lumpur campus of Australia’s prestigious Monash University, the head of the Dhaka police counterterrorism unit told reporters. The other militant killed on Saturday morning was Fazle Rabbi from the Jessore district northwest of Dhaka, who was missing from last April, counter-terrorism head Monirul Islam said. Rabbi’s family has fled, police said. The cafe attack was claimed by Islamic State and killed 22 people, mostly foreigners. It alarmed security and political experts because of the profile of the perpetrators: educated youths from privileged

backgrounds who had turned to radical Islamism only recently. Both Hossain and Rabbi were around 25, police said. Malaysian police said last month that at least two of the militants behind the cafe attack had attended Monash, although they did not name them. The militants singled out non-Muslims and foreigners in the attack, killing Italians, Japanese, an American and an Indian. The identity of Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi-born Canadian citizen suspected to be the mastermind of the cafe attack, was confirmed on Saturday itself. Spain starts countdown to possible third national election in year MADRID - The clock starts ticking on Wednesday towards what could be Spain’s third national election in a year when acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy faces a confidence vote in parliament for a second term in office. Spain has been without a functioning government since inconclusive elections in December and June failed to hand a convincing mandate to any political party. So far, party leaders have been unable to agree on forming a coalition. The eight-month political deadlock has delayed investments in infrastructure such as roads and rail and put high-ranking government appointments on hold, leaving some Spanish embassies without an ambassador. Rajoy’s centre-right People’s Party (PP) won the most votes in June’s election but lacks the majority it needs to win the vote even with support from centrists Ciudadanos (Citizens), Spain’s

fourth-biggest party. The opposition Socialists have refused to back Rajoy or smooth the way to a PP-led minority government by abstaining in a second confidence vote, which will be held on Friday if Wednesday’s ballot fails. In the second vote a simple majority will suffice to put Rajoy back in power. The Socialists are unlikely to back down from that position given local elections in September in the northern regions of Galicia and the Basque Country where support for Rajoy’s PP could cost votes for the left-wing party. Spain’s economy, on the rebound from a recession which ended three years ago, has powered ahead despite the lack of a

functioning government, with the latest data showing strong growth fueled by consumer spending and demand for exports. L’Aquila is grim reminder of struggle facing Italy’s quake-hit towns

L’AQUILA - Seven years after being devastated by an earthquake that killed more than 300 people, L’Aquila’s abandoned city centre is a stark reminder of the struggle facing Italian towns hit by a quake last week. Scaffolding still covers the city’s Baroque buildings, the skyline is dominated by cranes, most of the dusty streets are deserted and many areas remain cordoned off. “This place is one big building site,” said Luca Dioletta, the owner of Bar Duomo in the L’Aquila’s main square, dominated by the neoclassical cathedral which is one of few buildings not shrouded in protective tarpaulins. Bar Duomo, which opened just a month ago, is the only bar or restaurant in the square which used to teem with life before the quake struck on April 6, 2009. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s promise to rebuild Amatrice and other mountain towns ravaged by last week’s tremors echoed pledges made by former premier Silvio Berlusconi to some 80,000 people who lost their homes in and around L’Aquila in 2009. In power since February 2014, Renzi will be determined to prove himself a more able leader than Berlusconi and avoid the many errors made in L’Aquila, which lies just 56 km (35 miles) south of Amatrice. Reconstruction here has been

held up by bureaucracy and corruption, while billions of euros were spent on unpopular housing projects, or “new towns”, with rows of identical dwellings built on special quake-proof platforms. Residents say that while these brand new estates are comfortable enough, they lack any sense of community. “Look around you, there are no services, no bars, no restaurants, no newsstands, just houses surrounded by nothing,” said Ottavio Masciovecchio, 60, who lives in the Paganica new town some 10 km outside L’Aquila. Masciovecchio, who was born in the nearby village of Paganica, says he has lost all hope of ever returning to his former home and speaks bitterly as he walks around the boarded up houses and debris in the narrow streets where he used to live. “They say Paganica is being rebuilt but it’s a lie. I’d like to show this mess to the whole world,” he said. Renzi’s ministers say they will not let the communities around Amatrice die, but they have not explained how they can speed up Italy’s rebuilding efforts and have declined to speculate when the reconstruction might be complete. “This is not about setting challenges and making promises. On the left of the gate is a pillar with relief of a big demon and this pillar is made of bricks. Maospahit Temple had been reconstructed in order to meet the Balinese culture. The style of the gates are not the same as its origin when it was built during the power of Majapahit. FORT WORTH — Graham Rahal lifted his arm over his head just as he reached the finish line at Texas Motor Speedway, then glanced to his right to make sure he had won the race. spinning, and Carpenter believes he might have cut a tire though he was able to stay on the track and even took the lead after that. After the ensuing caution, Hinchcliffe and Carpenter restarted 1-2 on lap 221, and Carpenter went low coming off the backstretch

and led at the line by a matter of inches. Hinchcliffe went back in front on the next lap, and was still there when Carpenter got loose coming out of Turn 4 on lap 225 and made contact with Helio Castroneves and slammed into the wall to end his race. (ap)

BARCELONA — Toni Kroos’ late score ensured Real Madrid won its home opener over a feisty Celta Vigo 2-1 on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid stumbled in a second straight round of the Spanish league. Atletico was frustrated by a newly promoted side for the second time in a week after Diego Simeone’s bunch drew at Leganes 0-0. That followed its 1-1 stalemate with Alaves in its opener. Combined with Madrid’s two wins, Atletico trails its crosstown rival by four points from the start of what it hoped could be another three-team title race along with defending champion Barcelona. Atletico forward Antione Griezmann was scathing with his criticism of the team’s start to the season. “If we continue like this we will be fighting to avoid relegation,” Griezmann said. “We are angry. We have to get our act together because this is slipping away from us. HULL — Substitute Marcus Rashford scored in the second minute of stoppage time to earn Manchester United a 1-0 win at Hull and a third straight victory to open the English Premier League on Saturday. Rashford capped an impressive cameo as a 71st-minute substitute by tapping in from close range after Wayne Rooney cut in from the left and sent across a low ball. After previous wins over Bournemouth and Southampton, United was on course to drop points for the first time this season in the face of an obdurate defensive performance by promoted Hull, which also won its first two games. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s threematch scoring run came to end, but United was saved by a striker at the opposite end of his career.
