And, now, there’s the British thriller “Closed Circuit,” a confirmation of her ascendance to being a leading lady — one bristling with intelligence in any role. “I want to play women who are rich and make mistakes and can be messy and ugly as well as pretty,” says Hall. “I think that’s really an important service. Policy of the Bali and Klungkung government in alleviating the water crisis in Klungkung seems still far from expectation. As in Nusa Penida subdistrict, the policy of clean water procurement by building a clean water project at Guyangan hamlet, Batukandik, has not optimally operated. Since the administration of Governor Made Mangku Pastika until now, the project worth billions of rupiahs remains to have leakage here and there. The Head of Klungkung Municipality Waterworks (PDAM), Gede Darsana, said on Tuesday (Aug 27) the project was entirely the responsibility of the Bali government. He acknowledged the project had not been functioning optimally even though declared to have completed. Handover from the Bali government to Klungkung government had been made. Darsana said there had been a plan to perform the handover late this year. However, the provincial government confirmed there were some damages on the pipelines. “Some of the pipes are obsolete and rusty as using iron pipes. Currently, they are being replaced with rubber pipes. Thus, it cannot be

ascertained when it can function optimally and will be handed over,” he explained. Initially, the Guyangan spring was projected to drain clean water for eight villages in Nusa Penida, including the Kutampi, Batu Kandik, Sekartaji, Batu Madeg, Tanglad, Pejukutan, Klumpu and Bunga Mekar. However, seeing the considerable water discharge, Darsana said the water source was expected to cover all the needs of clean water in Nusa Penida. When will the clean water project function maximally? Darsana confessed not to know for sure because the management of Guyangan clean water project was the authority of the Bali government. Headman of Sekartaji, Wayan Suarta, said on Tuesday the Guyangan project was still unable to function optimally to provide water service for the entire region. So far, some villages remained not to receive clean water service from the spring. He asked the provincial government to seriously resolve the problem, so when the drought kindling the clean water crisis, the spring could function optimally. The Waterworks had just owned a raw water source in Nusa Penida that was only capable of producing 11 liters per second of the raw water potential amounting to 179 liters per second at the local source. From the raw water source, the Waterworks could serve some villages like the Sakti, Ped, Toya Pakeh, Kutampi Kaler, Batu Nunggul and Suana. As for the water needs of the Lembongan and Ceningan Island, he said his party attempted to process the brackish water into fresh water by making shallow well at Ceningan. “Prior to the execution, a survey will be made by central government.As planned, the Klungkung government will be assisted as much as IDR 7 billion for this project,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LIMA, Peru — The ruined city known as the “cradle of gold” was once a mountaintop refuge of Incan royalty, with elegant halls and plazas much like those of fabled Macchu Picchu just 30 miles (50 kilometers away). Yet only a handful of tourists visit each day, those willing to make a two-day hike to reach its majestic solitude. That is about to change: The national government has approved what will be Peru’s first aerial tramway. Bridging the deep canyon of the Apurimac River, it will make Choquequirao reachable in just 15 minutes from the nearest highway. The 3-mile (5-kilometer) long cable car is designed to whiz 400 people an hour in each direction a half mile (nearly a kilometer) above the river. The president of the Apurimac state government, Elias Segovia, anticipates the $45 million tramway will bring about 3,000 tourists a day after it opens in late 2015. “This is going to generate tourist services. It will generate great investment” in hotels, restaurants and other amenities, he says. The idea is to shift some of the tourist burden from Machu Picchu, where authorities have a limit of 2,500 daily visitors and where reservations are now

required for people who wish to hike the famed Inca Trail to the ruins. Currently, most visitors to Choquequirao must fly to Cuzco, the former Inca imperial capital, and then drive four hours on mountain roads prone to landslides and flooding. Then it’s another 12 to 16 hours on foot. It’s little wonder Choquequirao (CHO-kay-keer-ow) gets only about five visitors a day. “When we went there it was the two of us and the two rangers,” said Jeff Widman, a 27-year-old Internet entrepreneur from Menlo Park, California, who trekked there with his wife, and continued on to Machu Picchu. Choquequirao, which means “cradle of gold” in Quechua, is believed to be the last refuge of Incan rulers who fled Cuzco after its leader Manco Inca was defeated by Spanish conquistadors. NORFOLK, Virginia — Federal officials identified a virus Tuesday as the likely reason hundreds of bottlenose dolphins died along the East Coast, but they say there’s little they can do to stop the deaths. More than 330 dolphins have been stranded between New York and North Carolina since July 1, with nearly all of them dead by the time they wash up on shore, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. That’s more than nine times the historical average for dolphin strandings in the region during July and August. “Along the Atlantic seaboard, this is extraordinary,” Teri Rowles, NOAA Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program coordinator, said in a conference call with reporters. Earlier this month, NOAA declared an unusual mortality event so it could provide additional resources to study what was behind the rapid increase in deaths — more than half of which have occurred in Virginia. At the time, they suspected the cetacean

morbillivirus was causing the deaths, just as it did during the last major dolphin die-off. In 1987 and 1988, the virus was blamed for causing 740 dolphin deaths between New Jersey and Florida. Although research will continue, NOAA said it has collected enough evidence to declare the virus as the “tentative cause” in the most recent string of deaths as well. Morbillivirus is found in a broad range of mammals, and dolphins with it typically experience symptoms such as skin lesions, brain infections and pneumonia. The virus is usually spread through inhalation of respiratory particles or direct contact between animals, although officials said there’s no risk of humans catching it. Bottlenose dolphins are typically found in groups of two to 15. Officials at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center said many of the dolphins washing up on the state’s beaches are badly decomposed. State and federal officials say there are untold numbers of other dolphins that have also died and haven’t washed ashore, likely making the total death count much higher.

farmer and faced the same problem. If the paddy field had cracked he recognized that it would be difficult to cultivate the land. Similar opinion was also revealed by Wayan Darma, a community leader at the local subak. Such condition would result in huge losses to farmers. To overcome the problem, local farmers had prepared new variety requiring not too much water. Later, when the irrigation water had run normally to the paddy fields, farmers could replace the dead paddy plants. They did it because they believed it would be raining in the near future and they would not suffer a total loss due to harvest failure afflicting hundreds of hectares of paddy field. Another resident, Nyoman Sudiarti, also complained about similar condition. The amount of waste polluting the local beach every day was getting more and more. She also admitted to often receive complaints from local tour guides escorting tourists to the beach every day. “In the upstream area, the residents remain to have a habit of disposing waste into the river. As consequence, the waste polluting the beach increases through the days,” said this resident from Jumpai. Sumiati and Sudiarti hoped the residents in Klungkung could gradually reduce their habit of littering into the river. The finding by one of the traders was then reported to the staff of the market management and then to police station. Afterward, the finding was forwarded to the Bomb Squad of Bali Police for examination. From the result of examination, it was decided to bring the suitcase to the headquarters of the Sukawati Police. The water boom development project at Sidembunut village, Bangli, was complained by a number of farmers. Even, four chiefs of local subak have questioned about the clarity of the project. They worry if the water boom development project in the region will threaten the availability of their irrigation water. Chief of Subak Tegallalang, Sang Ketut Rencana, complained about the matter on Tuesday (Aug 27). So far, the water boom development project had not been notified to the chief of subak. “We are not notified yet about the project. As Chief of Subak Tegallalang, we are very disappointed to this condition. It performs the development silently without notification,” said

Aside from him, three other chiefs of subak also questioned about the construction of the project including the Chief of Subak Munggu Wayan Sumidra, Chief of Subak Anyar Nengah Sutaba, and Chief of Subak Palak Nengah Wirta. According to him, as chief of subak they were never invited to discuss about the water boom cited to belong to a political party leader in the Bangli legislative. They worried the presence of the water attraction would interfere with the irrigation of local subak. Other than the matter of water availability, his party also questioned about the waste disposal that would be produced each day by

the water attraction. Related to that matter, Rencana confessed to have traced about the presence of the water boom project to local hamlet chief. As a result, the hamlet chief told him if his party only got a notification. “I have confidence the project has not had a permit. Just imagine that farmers and some adjacent residents still question about the water boom project. Why can it be developed?” complained Ketut Rencana. He said the water boom project had also disconnected the irrigation channel at one of the rice fields. Overall, the region had 200 subak members and should pay membership fee to get the water subscription. BAGHDAD - A coordinated wave of bombings tore through Shiite Muslim areas in and around the Iraqi capital early Wednesday, part of a wave of bloodshed that killed at least 65 people and wounded many more, officials said. The blasts, which came in quick succession, mainly targeted residents out shopping and on their way to work. In addition to the bombings, the death toll included seven Shiite family members killed when gunmen raided their home and shot them as they slept. The attacks are the latest in a relentless wave of killing that has left thousands dead since April, marking the country’s worst spate of bloodshed since 2008. They raise fears that Iraq is hurtling back toward the brink of a civil war fueled by ethnic and sectarian differences. Insurgents deployed explosives-laden cars, suicide bombers and other bombs Wednesday and targeted parking lots, outdoor markets and restaurants in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad, according to officials. A military convoy was also hit south of the capital.

The northern neighborhood of Kazimiyah, home to a prominent, gold-domed Shiite shrine, was the worst hit. Two bombs went off in a parking lot, followed by a suicide car bomber who struck onlookers who had gathered at the scene. Police said 10 people were killed and 27 wounded in that attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the day’s attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of the Iraqi branch of al-Qaida. The group frequently targets Shiites, which it considers heretics, and employs coordinated bombings in an attempt to incite sectarian strife. The Shiite family shot dead at home were found in the largely Sunni town of Latifiyah, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad. Three children, ages eight to 12, were killed along with their parents and two uncles in that attack, according to police. Authorities said they had previously fled the town after being threatened, and returned only three weeks ago. Many of the day’s blasts targeted morning shoppers. Among them was a parked car bomb that detonated in a commercial area in the northern Shaab neighborhood of Baghdad, killing nine and wounding 15.

BEIJING - China’s leaders will gather in November for a key meeting on economic reforms, state media said Wednesday, the third time they will have met since a generational handover of power last year. The Third Plenum of the ruling Communist Party’s 200-member Central Committee could focus on reforming finance and taxation among other areas, the state-run Global Times newspaper said. “As a result, analysts expect that economic reforms will speed up,” it added. China’s new leadership under President Xi Jinping has repeatedly said the world’s second-biggest economy needs to refocus its growth model away from exports and infrastructure investment and towards consumer demand. But few specific changes have been announced. The November meeting will receive a report by the 25-member Politburo, the party’s second-highest body, focusing on “comprehensive and deepened reform”, the Global Times said, indirectly quoting a Politburo statement. According to a separate report in the

China Daily newspaper, the statement said the meeting “will help resolve outstanding conflicts and challenges China faces in the course of its development, and will be conducive to achieving sustainable and healthy economic and social development.” “Reform and opening-up should be continuous and never stop,” it added. “Standing still or going backward will lead to a dead end.” The meeting -- officially called the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee -- will be held after the country recorded its weakest annual economic growth for 13 years. China’s growth slowed sharply to 7.8 percent last year from 9.3 percent in 2011 on weakness in the domestic and global economies. The government is targeting 2013 growth of 7.5 percent.

Accor hotels cautious about outlook, shares fall

PARIS - Hotel chain Accor switched back into profit in the first half of the year but was cautious about the outlook on Wednesday, and its shares fell 3.59 percent. The group, the sixth-biggest hotel chain in the world and which has just shaken up its board with a new chief executive, reported a net profit of 34 million euros ($45.5 million) from a loss of 532 million euros at the same time last year. That loss reflected in part the effects of an asset sale. But in the first six months of the year, operating profit fell by 6.6 percent to 198 million euros from 212 million euros in the same period last year. Sales by the group, the biggest operator of hotels in Europe, fell by 0.9 percent to 2.694 billion euros, but on the basis of a com-

parable asset base and constant exchange rates, they rose by 1.8 percent. The price of shares in the company fell by 3.59 percent in initial trading to 27.76 euros. The overall French market as measured by the CAC 40 index was showing a gain of 0.18 percent. The group said that the fall in operating profit reflected mainly the cost of investment in line with a four-year plan costing 120 million euros. Finance director Sophie Stabile said that activity was firm and that the group was holding to its targets for 2016. The group said that for this year it expected an operating profit of 510-530 million euros from 526 million for 2012. At brokers Aurel BGC, analyst Tangi Le Liboux commented that the group had been somewhat brief in its explanations for the outlook for operating profit for the year.

Although declining, the price is still ranging from IDR 17 million to IDR 20 million per pair. With such high price, the Bali starling continues to be hunted by people. Bali starling is a beautiful bird. Because of its beauty, the bird has become a sort of mascot for the Island of Bali and has been named the faunal symbol of Bali. The Head of Buleleng Natural Resources Conservation of Buleleng, Gede Wenten, said that population of Bali starling was mostly located in the West Bali National Park (TNBB). But now, the existence of the very rare bird was extinct and virtually disappeared. Bali starling could only be found in breeding area such as at Tegal Bunder, TNBB. In addition, many people around the TNBB also bred it independently. Wenten said that population of Bali starling at breeding location at Tegal Bunder amounted to some 35 pairs. Meanwhile, the Bali starling bred by people came to some 30 pairs. “Approximately 12 residents at Sumberklampok near the TNBB are breeding the birds,” said Wenten. He added that his party continued to supervise the commercial breeding carried out by residents. The surveillance was made in order the bird would not be traded beyond the rules. It was also executed so that the bird would not be abandoned. “If they are found to abandon the bird, we will impose strict sanction,” he said. According to Wenten, the residents who did the breeding of Bali starling were allowed to sell the birds to others. However, the bird sold should be of the second filial of the parent or its grandchild. “Its mother cannot be sold. It is only allowed to sell the second filial or its grandchild,” he said. Wenten confirmed the bird price was indeed expensive so that it was always sought after by bird collectors. Formerly, it was sold for IDR 50 million per pair. But now the price had started to fall to IDR 20 million. This happened because many people had bred the birds so that the amount of birds on sale turned a lot. “This is a normal case, if the number is scarce, the price is more expensive. WASHINGTON - US consumers grew slightly more confident in August as they viewed economic conditions and job prospects improving in the future, the Conference Board said Tuesday. The consumer confidence index rose to 81.5 last month, up from 81.0 in July but still below the five year high of 82.1 reached in June. The improvement in confidence, a partial predictor of consumer spending that drives the economy, surprised analysts, who generally had forecast the index would drop to 77.0. But the overall stronger sentiment number was entirely due to expectations for conditions six months ahead; the reading jumped to 88.7 from 86.0 in July.

Consumers’ views of current conditions deteriorated to 70.7 from 73.6 last month. “Consumers were moderately more upbeat about business, job and earning prospects,” Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board. Franco noted income expectations, which had fallen after the January payroll tax hike, rebounded to their highest level in two and a half years. Higher incomes could boost consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of US economic activity. “This report is consistent with our expectation that consumer confidence will continue to grind higher as labor and housing markets continue to improve,” said Cooper Howes of Barclays.

India building collapses kill 8, trap dozen more Associated Press Writer

VADODARA, India - Two adjacent apartment buildings collapsed early Wednesday in western India, killing at least eight people, police said. Rescuers were working to pull out at least a dozen people trapped in the debris after the three-story buildings fell in the city of Vadodara in Gujarat state, police officer Bhanu Pratap Parmar said. At least four people were injured and were in hospitals, rescue workers said.

Most of the occupants of the 14 apartments in the first building were sleeping when it collapsed. The adjacent building was evacuated minutes before it fell, police said. The two buildings were part of 33 housing blocks constructed by the Gujarat government more than a decade ago to house the poor. YOTSUKURA, Japan - Fumio Suzuki, a third-generation fisherman, sets out into the Pacific Ocean every seven weeks. Not to catch fish that he can sell but to catch fish that can be tested for radiation. For the last 2 ½ years, fishermen from the port of Yotsukura near the stricken Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant have been mostly stuck on land with little to do. There is no commercial fishing along most of the Fukushima coast. In a nation highly sensitive to food safety, there is no market for the fish caught near the stricken plant because the meltdowns it suffered contaminated the ocean water and marine life with radiation. A sliver of hope emerged after recent sampling results showed a decline in radioactivity in some fish species. But a new crisis spawned by fresh leaks of radioactive water from the Fukushima plant last week may have dashed those prospects. Fishermen like 47-year-old Suzuki now wonder whether they ever will be able to resume fishing, a mainstay for many small rural communities like Yotsukura, 45 kilometers (30 miles) south of the Fukushima plant. His son has already moved on, looking for work in construction. “The operators (of the plant) are

reacting too late every time in whatever they do,” said Suzuki, who works with his 79-year-old father Choji after inheriting the family business from him. “We say, ‘Don’t spill contaminated water,’ and they spilled contaminated water. They are always a step behind so that is why we can’t trust them,” Suzuki said, as his trawler, the Ebisu Maru, traveled before dawn to a point about 45 kilometers (30 miles) offshore from the Fukushima plant to bring back a test catch. With his father at the wheel, Suzuki dropped the heavy nets out the back of the boat, as the black of night faded to a sapphire sky, tinged orange at the horizon. As the sun rose over a glassy sea, father and son hauled in the heavily laden nets and then set to the hard work of sorting the fish: sardines, starfish, sole, sea bream, sand sharks, tossing them into yellow and blue plastic baskets as sea gulls screamed and swooped overhead. docked at Yotsukura where waiting fishermen dumped the samples into coolers and rushed them to a nearby laboratory to be gutted and tested. Suzuki says his fisheries co-operative will decide sometime soon whether to persist in gathering samples. For now they will have to survive on compensation from the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant’s operator. The cooperative also had plans to start larger-scale test catches next month that would potentially also be for consumption if radiation levels were deemed safe. But those plans were put on hold after more bad news last week: authorities discovered that a massive amount of partially treated, radioactive water was leaking from tanks at Fukushima, the fifth and so far the worst, breach. The water, stored in 1,000 tanks, is pumped into three damaged reactors to keep their melted fuel cool. Much of the water leaked into the ground but some may have escaped into the sea through a rain-water gutter.

Thousands of child labourers as young as eight are mining gold in grim conditions in Tanzania, Human Rights Watch said Wednesday in a report criticising conditions in the key industry. While boys “dig and drill in deep, unstable pits” in informal mines, working underground for shifts as long as 24 hours, girls around the smallscale mines face sexual harassment and pressure to become prostitutes, the US-based rights group warned. Tanzania is Africa’s fourth largest gold producer, and the precious metal is the top foreign exchange earner for the country, with exports topping $1.8 billion in the first six months of 2013, according to the central bank. Small-scale mines extracted 1.6 tonnes of gold in 2012 worth some $85 million (64 million euros), with the bulk exported to the United Arab Emirates, as well as to Britain, China, South Africa and Switzerland. “Thousands of children work in licenced and unlicenced small-scale gold mines in Tanzania,” HRW’s report read, based on visits to 11 sites across the east African nation. Many of the children are at risk of being poisoned by the dangerous mercury used to extract gold from raw

ore, HRW said. “The employment of children in dangerous mining work is one of the worst forms of child labour under international agreements, to which Tanzania is a party,” it added. HRW called on the government, donor nations and producers to curb the practice, arguing that while Tanzania has strong anti-child labour laws the authorities have “done far too little to enforce them”. As Tanzania’s mining industry grows, HRW stressed the importance ot ensuring that production respects basic human rights. It noted that a $5.0 million World Bank project supporting the mining sector does not directly address the problem of child labour. The United Nations Environment Programme last year estimated that between 500,00 and 1.5 million Tanzanians are employed in the informal gold mining sector. “Tanzanian boys and girls are lured to the gold mines in the hopes of a better life, but find themselves stuck in a dead-end cycle of danger and despair,” said HRW children’s expect Janine Morna. “Labour inspectors need to visit both licenced and unlicenced mines regularly, and ensure employers face sanctions for using child labour.”

The KPC has so far asked for an incentive but the finance ministry has rejected the request because it is considered too much. KPC plans to build a new refinery in Balongan while Saudi Aramco in Tuban, East Java. The Balongan refinery is expected to produce 9.6 million kiloliters of fuel oil while the refinery in Tuban 8.29 million kiloliters. Besides the two new refineries the government also plans to build refineries that would be financed using the national budget. Right now, Pertamina has six refineries that process 1.031 million barrels of crude a day. The six refineries are located in Dumai, Riau, Sumatra with a production capacity of 170,000 barrels a day, in Plaju, South Sumatra with a capacity of 118,000 barrels a day, in Cilacap, Central Java with a capacity of 348,000 barrels a day, in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, 260,000 barrels a day, in Balongan, West Java, with a capacity of 260,000 barrels a day and in Kasim, West Papua, with a capacity of 10,000 barrels a day. The refineries altogether produce 40.6 million kiloliters of fuel oils per day.

Pertamina to offer two refinery projects for bidding

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s stateowned oil and gas company PT Pertamina plans to offer two refinery construction projects for international bidding, said president director Karen Agustiawan on Wednesday. She said through the open tender, she hopes to get the lowest fiscal incentive request. “Any party could participate in the tender, including investors from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia,” she said. She added that although the project would be offered for bidding cooperation for refinery construction with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and Saudi Aramco Asia Company Ltd. would remain. “It is not cancelled. But, later if the tender is opened, they may participate. It is not6 limited,” she said. Karen said the last refinery Pertamina built and operated in 1994 is located in Balongan, Indramayu, West Java. JAKARTA - A critically endangered Sumatran tiger and two African lions have died at a zoo in western Indonesia after being poisoned, an official said Tuesday. The eight-year-old male tiger, named Peter by zookeepers, was found paralysed earlier this month at the Taman Rimbo zoo in Jambi province, after eating poisoned meat. He died a week later. The African lions -- a species classified as vulnerable -also died around the same time, said Nurazman, an official from a government agency tasked with protecting wildlife and the environment. A two-year-old female Sumatran tiger, the offspring of the tiger who died, also ate the tainted meat but survived, said Nurazman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “An autopsy result showed that the animals had been poisoned,” he said, adding the meat had been laced with

a chemical normally used to put down stray dogs with rabies. That type of poison was stored at the zoo on Sumatra island but was not available on the open market, he said. The agency had questioned five people, including a zookeeper, security guard and meat supplier, although it was not yet clear who was responsible, he said. The Sumatran tiger is the world’s smallest tiger. There are only an estimated 400 to 500 still alive in the wild on the island from which the animal takes its name. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature says recent studies estimate the African lion population at between 20,000 and 40,000. Indonesia’s most notorious zoo is at Surabaya in East Java province. Hundreds of animals have died at Surabaya Zoo in recent years due to neglect, and those still alive languish in cramped, dirty cages and suffer from illnesses including pneumonia and diarrhoea.

Valentino Rossi believes that Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa’s one-two finish at Brno is evidence that Honda has moved ahead of Yamaha in the MotoGP pecking order. Honda has now won the last four straight races - all courtesy of Marquez – and has taken pole position in six of the last eight events. Yamaha meanwhile last triumphed in June, when Rossi prevailed in the Dutch TT. Its factory team has not claimed pole since Jorge Lorenzo secured the front spot of the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix in early May. ANKARA, Turkey — The Turkish Athletics Federation has banned European 100-meter hurdles champion Nevin Yanit for two years for doping. The federation says Yanit tested positive for banned substances during a competition in Duesseldorf, Germany, in February. Yanit won the European hurdles title at both the 2010 and 2012 competitions. The case against Olympic 1,500-meter champion Asli Cakir Alptekin — who has also been accused of doping — is still being assessed. Turkey has been hit by a series of doping scandals as Istanbul is bidding to host the 2020 Olympics, competing against Tokyo and Madrid. Fenerbahce out of Europe after CAS upholds ban Reuters

ISTANBUL - Turkish side Fenerbahce will be unable to compete in the Europa League this season after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld a UEFA-imposed two-year ban from European competition over a match-fixing scandal on Wednesday. With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) vote on whether Istanbul, Madrid or Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics due on Sept. 7, the timing of the announcement delivers another body blow to the tarnished image of Turkish sport. Earlier on Wednesday, the Turkish Athletics Federation handed a two-year suspension to double European 100m hurdles champion Nevin Yanit for drugs violations, just weeks after similar bans were given to 31 other local athletes. Playing under appeal against the original ban, Fenerbahce were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal in the second leg of a Champions League playoff on Tuesday, losing the tie 5-0 on aggregate. Normally a defeat at this stage would still guarantee a berth in the continent’s second tier competition but Fenerbahce will be barred from the Europa League following the CAS ruling. Lausanne-based CAS said in a statement it had dismissed appeals filed by Fenerbahce and Ukraine’s Metalist Kharkiv, barred by UEFA over involvement in a domestic match-fixing case dating back to 2008. “Fenerbahce SK is excluded from two editions of the UEFA club competitions,” CAS said in its ruling following a two-day hearing held at its headquarters on Aug. 21-22. Fenerbahce and fellow Istanbul club Besiktas were banned in June after a protracted UEFA inquiry into scandals that emerged in 2011. Besiktas, banned for one season, also appealed to CAS and its ruling is expected on Aug. 30. In a separate statement, UEFA said it welcomed the rejection of Fenerbahce’s appeal
