LOS ANGELES - Australian model and actress Miranda Kerr has handed over millions of dollars worth of jewelry that U.S. authorities say was given to her as part of a Malaysian money laundering scheme, her spokesperson said on Tuesday. Kerr, a former Victoria’s Secret model, was given diamond pendants, earrings and other jewelry worth about $8 million in 2014 by Malaysian financier Jho Low, according to a June 15 U.S. Department of Justice civil lawsuit. Kerr is not accused of any wrongdoing and her spokesperson said she has co-operated fully with U.S. authorities from the start of the inquiry. “The transfer of the jewelry gifts from Ms. Kerr’s safe deposit box in Los Angeles to government agents was completed on last Friday afternoon,” the spokesperson said in a statement. The gifts of jewelry were detailed in the Justice Department’s lawsuit, in a long-running case over an alleged conspiracy to launder money misappropriated from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund, known as 1MDB, which was set up by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2009 to promote economic development.

The Justice Department alleges that more than $4.5 billion was taken from 1MDB by high-level fund officials and their associates. Kerr, who was in between marriages to actor Orlando Bloom and Snapchat cofounder Evan Spiegel at the time, was given a heartshaped diamond necklace worth $1.8 million, with her initials inscribed on the back, as a 2014 Valentine’s Day gift from Low, according to the lawsuit. Later in 2014, investigators said, Low gave Kerr a second, pink diamond, pendant worth $4.8 million, followed by matching earrings, a bracelet and a ring worth almost $2 million. The lawsuit said the funds for the jewelry were misappropriated from the 1MDB account. Low, whose whereabouts are unknown, could not be reached for comment. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio also is tied up in the scandal after accepting artwork by Picasso and Basquiat worth more than $12 million from financiers connected with the 1MDB case, along with an Oscar once owned by actor Marlon Brando. DiCaprio is cooperating with authorities and has initiated the return of the items, his spokesman has said. (rtr)

China’s navy launches latest-generation destroyer BEIJING — China’s increasingly powerful navy launched its most advanced domestically produced destroyer on Wednesday, at a time of rising competition with other naval powers such as the United States, Japan and India. The first 10,000-ton Type 055 entered the water at Shanghai’s Jiangnan Shipyard on Wednesday morning, the navy said in a statement. It said the ship is equipped with the latest air, missile, ship and submarine defense systems. China is believed to be planning to produce four of the ships.

“The launch of this ship signifies that our nation’s development of destroyers has reached a new stage,” the navy said. A photo on the navy’s website showed multicolored streamers being shot out of tubes while sailors and shipyard workers stood dockside next to a massive Chinese flag. The Type 055 is significantly larger than China’s other modern destroyer, the Type 052, representing the rising sophistication of China’s defense industries. Once heavily dependent on foreign technology, China in April launched its first aircraft carrier built entirely on its own, based on an earlier Ukrainian model. In terms of displacement, it is roughly equivalent to the Arleigh Burke class of destroyer. China’s navy is undergoing an ambitious expansion and is projected to have a total of 265-273 warships, submarines and logistics vessels by 2020, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Naval Analysis. That compares with 275 deployable battle force ships presently in the U.S. Navy, China’s primary

Hostels in Ubud increasingly rampant

Chairman of the Ubud Home Stay Association (UHSA), I.B. Wiryawan, said that the development of accommodations similar to home stays and offering low room rates is posing a challenge to home stay owners in Ubud. “ Actually it is clear that they (hostels-ED) are prohibited but they are not being regulated and they are mushrooming in the area” he said. They need to check things are the ground to see how things are going” he said. Gus De added that he would like to see the role of the Customary Village becoming more powerful in arranging how tourism develops – especially in Ubud and surrounding area. “The strength of the Customary Villages lies in the perarem (addendum to customary bylaw). These can be used as guidelines for maintaining and preserving home stays in Ubud that have become iconic of this area”, he explained. At present, there are 340 home-stays around Ubud and Peliatan village with some 2,000 rooms ready to accommodate tourists. “This is just home stays – not to mention the other accommodations. The number of tourists however is not balanced with the number of available rooms. Hotel occupancy rates reaches a maximum of 60 percent and on normal days is around 40 percent. That means a lot of empty rooms”, he explained. The room rate competition in Ubud he said is getting ugly. According to Gus De, ideally room rates for home stays should be somewhere between IDR 350,000 and IDR 400,000 per room per night. “The number of rooms and the number of tourists has become out of balance and this needs to be considered. I have proposed to halt the construction of new hotels in order to allowed Ubud to improve” he said. Previously, Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta, said that based on data collection conducted earlier this year, there are about 20 more hostels around Ubud. “We will control this, so that there are no more new hostels as this causes unfair room rate competition”, he said. Hostel are not classified as accommodation according to the regulations regarding the arrangement and control of tourists accommodations as set forth by the Regent of Gianyar. So far, most hostel owners are using home-stay permits. “On average, they use home-stay permits. However, home-stays usually have just two beds in each room, while hostel can provide up to 10 beds per room”, he explained. The Gianyar Tourism Office is currently in the process of informing hostel owners in Ubud about this matter. If conditions persist we will coordinate with the municipal police to handle to handle the matter. “ We will summon the hostel owners and then urge them to turn their accommodations back into home stays”, he said. This man familiarly addressed as Gung Ari added that apart from triggering room rate competition, hostels also have a significant impact on the image of cultural tourism. “ Obviously hostels are different because they do not offer tourism-village-based accommodation as one room holds up to 10 beds, compared to the two beds per room offered by home stays”, he affirmed. Ubud still has beggars

GIANYAR - The tourism area of Ubud is still dealing with the issue of beggars on the main street. Despite intensive efforts to free this tourist area from the presence of beggars, they continue to be a problem. Many fear that they could harm the image of Ubud tourism. Most of the beggars operate in area that are crowded with tourists and many of them bring their small children along to elicite sympathy. Many beggars took advantage of the to Eid al-Fitr holiday try their luck. Head of the Gianyar Municipal Police, Cokorda Gde Agusnawa, said on Tuesday (Jun. 27) that this social problem is quite difficult to resolve. Although many efforts have been made to curb begging, it remains rampant. They seem to not be deterred and continue to return to tourist-dense areas to beg, he said. . “Actually, both the municipal police and Ubud’s pecalang (customary security guard) have been pro-active in getting rid of the beggars, but they just return again later”’ he said. Agusnawa explained that most of the beggars are from Karangasem and in fact it is the same people who have arrested and brought back to Karangasem several times, but they always return. He added that there are more beggars during the holidays and that when they are arrested they are always given guidance and sent back to their region of origin. “During holidays the social services offices and the local government of Karangasem are closed so it makes it hard to act now. Once the holiday is over we will start the process again” he added. (kmb25)

Can electroacupuncture decrease stress incontinence?

BEIJING - Acupuncture paired with mild electric currents may be better than doing nothing at all to relieve a common type of urinary incontinence in women, a Chinese study suggests.

All of the 504 women in the study had stress incontinence, which happens when the pelvic muscles are too weak to prevent urinary leakage when women do things like cough, sneeze or exercise. Childbirth is a common reason for weak pelvic muscles and obesity makes the problem worse. Researchers tested what’s known as electroacupuncture, where an electrical current is passed between a pair of acupuncture needles compared to a dummy treatment with similar needles, for six weeks. Women who received electroacupuncture had a greater decrease in urine leakage after treatment and after six months than the participants who got the sham intervention, researchers report in JAMA. “The safety and effect of electroacupuncture for stress urinary incontinence were comparable to those of pelvic floor muscle training,” an approach currently used in some instances to help women reduce leakage, said senior study author Dr. Baoyan Liu of Guang’an Men Hospital, which is affiliated with the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing. “Electroacupuncture was effective with rapid response, short treatment period and good compliance,” Liu said by email. “Pelvic floor muscle training takes at least three months with less compliance.” At the start of the study, women in the electroacupuncture group leaked an average of 18.4 grams of

urine during a one-hour pad test and had an average of 7.9 episodes of leakage in a typical 72-hour period. By comparison, women in the sham treatment group had average leakage of 19.4 grams and experienced 7.7 episodes in a typical 72-hour period. Women assigned to electroacupuncture had 18 sessions over six weeks. The treatment consisted of inserting needles at traditional acupoints in the lumbrosacral region near the small of the back and the back of the pelvis near the hips. Women in the control group got sham electroacupuncture at nonacupoints in the same region of the back. After six weeks, women who got electroacupuncture had an average decrease in urine leakage of 9.9 grams, compared with a 2.6 gram decrease among women in the group that got the sham treatment. With electroacupuncture, women averaged one less episode of leakage in 72 hours than those in the comparison group. Over six months, there were also some time periods when electroacupuncture was associated with a bigger reduction in the number of episodes of incontinence, but this didn’t happen consistently. Side effects associated with treatment such as fatigue and hematoma, or swelling of clotted blood inside tissue, occurred with 1.6 percent of women in the electroacupuncture group and 2 percent of the other participants. One limitation of the study is the lack of a clinically meaningful reduction in the average amount of urine that leaked before and after treatment, the authors note. They also didn’t assess the amount of urine leaked after treatment stopped. (rtr)

California to list glyphosate as cancer-causing; Monsanto vows fight

CALIFORNIA - Glyphosate, an herbicide and the active ingredient in Monsanto Co’s popular Roundup weed killer, will be added to California’s list of chemicals known to cause cancer effective July 7, the state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said on Monday. Monsanto vowed to continue its legal fight against the designation, required under a state law known as Proposition 65, and called the decision “unwarranted on the basis of science and the law.” The listing is the latest legal setback for the seeds and chemicals company, which has faced increasing litigation over glyphosate since the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is “probably carcinogenic” in a controversial ruling in 2015. Dicamba, a weed killer designed for use with Monsanto’s next generation of biotech crops, is under scrutiny in Arkansas after the state’s plant board voted last week to ban the chemical. OEHHA said the designation of glyphosate under Proposition 65 will proceed following an unsuccessful attempt by Monsanto to block the listing in trial court and after requests for stay were denied by a state appellate court and the California’s Supreme Court. Monsanto’s appeal of the trial

court’s ruling is pending. “This is not the final step in the process, and it has no bearing on the merits of the case. We will continue to aggressively challenge this improper decision,” Scott Partridge, Monsanto’s vice president of global strategy, said. Listing glyphosate as a known carcinogen under California’s Proposition 65 would require companies selling the chemical in the state to add warning labels to packaging. Warnings would also be required if glyphosate is being sprayed at levels deemed unsafe by regulators. Users of the chemical include landscapers, golf courses, orchards, vineyards and farms. Monsanto and other glyphosate producers would have roughly a year from the listing date to re-label products or remove them from store shelves if further legal challenges are lost. Monsanto has not calculated the cost of any re-labeling effort and does not break out glyphosate sales data by state, Partridge said. Environmental groups cheered OEHHA’s move to list the chemical. “California’s decision makes it the national leader in protecting people from cancer-causing pesticides,” said Nathan Donley, a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity. Govt to team up with tourism players for promotion in Japan

MANGUPURA — To promote tourism, especially to Japan, the government will invite tourism players. It needs to be carried out because the tourism players are very potential to bring in tourists to Bali. To that end, Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Juniartha Putra, said that his office will immediately convey it to central government to re-promote tourism to Japan. To bring in tourists must be supported by some main factors. One of them is the smoothness of transportation (flight) on a regular basis. In the meantime, terminated flights of Japan Airlines (JAL) in September 2010 have an impact on drastic drop in tourist visit from Japan. “The country has considerable potential. However, their travel to Indonesia is constrained by direct flight,” he said. Juniartha, accompanied by President Director of Bali Convex, Bagus Surya Dharma, said that sustainable promotion should be done, even though Bali’s tourist object has been famous overseas. Therefore, we will coordinate with local government and the ministry of tourism for promotional strategies to Japan and other countries. It is also the hope of the ministry of tourism in welcoming foreign tourists to Indonesia by 2019 as many as 20 million,” he said. In the meantime, President Director of Rama Tours, Makiko Iskandar, said that it is time to re-promote tourism to Japan and conduct assessment to airline companies in the country in order to enable the operation of regular flights to the Island of the Gods. “Tourism promotion is very important to bring in foreign tourists to Indonesia, especially Bali. Parliament urges presence of tourist fast boat in Bali Strait NEGARA — Jembrana House of Representatives encourage the presence of fast boat for crossings in the Bali Strait. However, this boat is specialized for tourism purposes connecting Banyuwangi to Jembrana through the traditional harbor. Chairman of the Jembrana House of Representatives, I Ketut Sugiasa, when met amid the discussion on the amended budget plan last week said that the sea transportation is needed to support tourism in Jembrana. Moreover, this time government of Jembrana with Banyuwangi district has owned cooperation agreement related to this tourism. It was made by the Jembrana parliament during a working visit to Banyuwangi not long ago. “One of them is related to this fast boat. We encourage the tourism office to immediately realize this to support tourism in Gilimanuk,” said this PDI-P politician from Dauhwaru. Currently, there has been a wooden pier in Karangsewu, Gilimanuk, to be functioned as a point of entry for tourists. This pier will be connected to a similar (traditional) pier at some points in Banyuwangi where one of them is in Watu Dodol. “We will leave the management to a third party (private sector). Then, we’ll allocate budget for the repair of the pier first,” he said. Sugiasa accompanied by Deputy Chairman of the Jembrana House of Representatives, I Wayan Wardana and Kade Darma Susila, said the presence of the tour package will be able to support the economy of surrounding communities, one of them is that of Gilimanuk. Many services can be offered to the arrival of tourists using this fast boat. Local and foreign tourists will have many options. It is no need to go through the big port of Ketapang-Gilimanuk as it is today. Ferry schedules will not get interrupted with the queue, so the travel time is faster. The parliament encourages so this deal could be addressed by the executive and realized soon. In the meantime, the ASDP Ketapang-Gilimanuk harbor authority as the operator of the Bali Strait crossing also has the same desire but for large ships (to haul vehicles). “In the future, hopefully there is a premium ship offering different service and price. ON Sunday night (Jun. 25), visitors to the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) were very fortunate to get a quality and thrilling art show. At that time, they had the opportunity to watch dance performance and innovative music presented by Pancer Langit art community of Badung in the Ksiraarnawa Building, Bali Art Center. The performance featuring the Aci Tulak Tunggul ritual at Taman Ayun Mengwi (Badung) is a source of inspiration for the art creativity successfully combining a variety of arts such as dance, music, vocal and okokan (cowbell art) harmoniously in a single story composition. In order to thicken the innovative nuances of the performance, the art director A.A. Gede Agung Rahma Putra also involved the famous comedian Cedil to enliven the atmosphere. The community based in Kapal village, Mengwi, opened its art presentation with an innovative slonding gamelan composition entitled Giri Tirtha. This musical composition is inspired by water as a gift of God that must be understood and used wisely. After the opening gamelan composition, the audience was presented with the main performance of the Aci Tulak Tunggul. This innovative performance supported by beautiful lighting tells about the king of Mengwi’s bad feeling amid the prosperous life of his people. The king thought there would be a great incident that hits the kingdom of Mengwi. In fact, such bad premonition really happened. The large embankment becoming the source of irrigation for subak at Taman Ayun under Mengwi kingdom and residence of wong samar (unseen beings) is reported to have collapsed. Due to the collapse, people are very restless because the unseen being whose residence

is disturbed begins to disrupt the life of Mengwi people. To control the chaotic condition and restore to the original condition, the king of Mengwi performs Siwasraya to seek guidance from God. With strong efforts and determination, finally the king of Mengwi gets revelation to hold a ritual known as the Aci Tulak Tunggul. It is equipped with a sacred dance where the dancers dressed in dried banana leaves. With sacred offerings held at the Taman Ayun embankment, the people of Mengwi can regain the peace after having been torn apart. Other than the support of dance movement aesthetically choreographed by IGN Agung Giri Putra assisted by Putu Anggradana, Ida Bagus Eka Haristha and Kadek Karunia Artha, the performance lasting about an hour became more special by the appearance of Brahma Diva Kencana cowbell art troupe that appeared in the last session. Hong Kong residents seek British passports amid fears for future

BRASILIA - President Michel Temer called a corruption charge filed against him by Brazil’s top prosecutor a “fiction” on Tuesday, as the nation’s political crisis deepened under the second president faced with possible removal from office in just over a year. Temer, who was charged Monday night with arranging to receive millions of dollars in bribes, said the move would hurt Brazil’s economic recovery and possibly paralyze efforts at reform. The conservative leader said executives of the world’s biggest meatpacker, JBS SA , who accused him in plea-bargain testimony of arranging to take 38 million reais ($11.47 million) in bribes in the coming months, did so only to escape jail for their own crimes. “I have been charged with taking bribes without ever having received a cent,” Temer said in a nationally televised speech. “I’ve never seen any of that money and I have never taken part in planning to commit any crimes.” He added: “I tell you, my friends, without any fear of error, that this charge is a fiction.” Under Brazilian law, now that Prosecutor General Rodrigo Janot has charged Temer, it is up to the House of Deputies to vote on whether or not to allow the Supreme Court to try the leader, who replaced impeached leftist President Dilma Rousseff last year. Two-thirds of the lower house must vote against Temer for his trial to occur. Temer’s allies in the lower house say they have the votes needed to block the charge. But Janot is widely expected to level fresh charges of racketeering and obstruction of justice against Temer in the coming weeks, forcing lawmakers into multiple votes on a possible presidential trial. Several top lawmakers allied with the ruling coalition have told Reuters they are concerned that multiple votes to protect a deeply unpopular leader could erode his support, eventually prying open the door to a trial. A full house vote on the first charge is expected to take place in about a month. Key to Temer’s survival is whether the Social Democracy Party (PSDB), Brazil’s third largest, will stick with his coalition or bolt. The party is deeply divided, with many members wanting to distance themselves from Temer to improve their re-election chances next year. BUSINESS Tourist trap: China’s surpluses may be bigger than thought LONDON - Tales of Chinese tourist largesse providing a big boost to destination economies are legend. They may also be incorrect, with China’s current account surpluses understated as a result. Anna Wong, a senior economist with the U.S. Federal Reserve, reckons the money spent overseas by Chinese tourists -- some $215 billion last year, according to one industry estimate -- is not all it is cracked up to be. In a draft paper for the Fed’s governors, Wong says a large amount of the money designated as having come from Chinese tourists globally should actually count as investment in assets. “Financial outflows concealed as travel imports are large and significant, growing to around 1 percent of China’s GDP in 2015 and 2016, and account for a quarter of recorded net private financial outflows,” she wrote. This would mean that China’s current account surpluses over the past few years are actually larger than reported, and possibly as big as before the financial crisis. China’s capital controls make it difficult for wealthier Chinese to invest abroad. But the implication of Wong’s findings is that there are a plethora of ways for the country’s “tourists” to buy property and other assets overseas. Factors suggesting this is happening come down to the amount of money being reported as touristrelated versus the actual macroeconomic conditions surrounding it. One example is that China’s travel expenditure as a share of GDP was reported to be higher than Britain’s in 2014, even though the latter’s per capita GDP is seven times China’s. Similarly, in the same year, spending by Chinese tourists abroad was reported to have increased four times faster than the actual number of tourists. The way that money designated as tourist inflows ends up as asset buying is mainly anecdotal. Tenganan is one of Bali’s ancient traditional villages –known as Bali Aga villages and is located in Manggis, Karangasem. The people of Tanganan follow a pattern of life determined by customary rules or bylawas, known as awig-awig. Locale people follow the guidelines of the awig-awig that was passed down from their ancestors. The design and spatial layout of the buildings of Teganan are still original and thus comply with customary rules regarding architecture giving this village a unique appearance. Tenganan also has a distinctive traditional attire made from geringsing woven fabric. The people of Tenganan and other Bali Aga villages have different beliefs than the rest of the Balinese. For example the people of Tenganan do not recognize caste. Tenganan village also has a

unique tradition known as the pandanus war named for the thorny pandanus leaves with which the participants are armed as this ceremonial yet visceral ‘war’ every June. Second major cyber attack in two months disrupts businesses around world

FRANKFURT - A major cyber attack, believed to have first struck Ukraine, caused havoc around the world on Wednesday, crippling computers or halting operations at port operator Maersk, a Cadbury chocolate plant in Australia and the property arm of French bank BNP Paribas.

Helicopter attacks Venezuela court, Maduro denounces coup bid

CARACAS - A Venezuelan police helicopter strafed the Supreme Court and a government ministry on Tuesday, escalating the OPEC nation’s political crisis in what President Nicolas Maduro called an attack by “terrorists” seeking a coup. The aircraft fired 15 shots at the Interior Ministry, where scores of people were at a social event, and dropped four grenades on the court, where judges were meeting, officials said. However, there were no reports of injuries. “Sooner rather than later, we are going to capture the helicopter and those behind this armed terrorist attack against the institutions of the country,” Maduro said. “They could have caused dozens of deaths,” he said. The 54-year-old socialist leader has faced three months of protests from opposition leaders who decry him as a dictator who has wrecked a once-prosperous economy. There has been growing dissent too from within government and the security forces. At least 75 people have died, and hundreds more been injured and arrested, in the anti-government unrest since April. Demonstrators are demanding general elections, measures to alleviate a brutal economic crisis, freedom for hundreds of jailed opposition activists, and independence for the opposition-controlled National Assembly legislature. Maduro says they are seeking a coup against him with the encouragement of a U.S. government eager to gain control of Venezuela’s oil reserves, the largest in the world.

Venezuela’s government said in a communique the helicopter was stolen by investigative police pilot Oscar Perez, who declared himself in rebellion against Maduro. Images shared on social and local media appear to show Perez waving a banner from the helicopter reading “Liberty”, and the number “350” in large letters. The number refers to the constitutional article allowing people the right to oppose an undemocratic government. A video posted on Perez’ Instagram account around the same time showed him standing in front of several hooded armed men, saying an operation was underway to restore democracy. Perez said in the video he represented a coalition of military, police and civilian officials opposed to the “criminal” government, urged Maduro’s resignation and called for general elections. “This fight is ... against the vile government. Against tyranny,” he said. Local media also linked Perez to a 2015 action film, Suspended Death, which he co-produced and starred in as an intelligence agent rescuing a kidnapped businessman. On Tuesday, witnesses reported hearing several detonations in downtown Caracas, where the pro-Maduro Supreme Court, the presidential palace and other key government buildings are located. Opponents to Maduro view the Interior Ministry as a bastion of repression and also hate the Supreme Court for its string of rulings bolstering the president’s power and undermining the oppositioncontrolled legislature. Obama and family move from Bali to Java on Indonesia trip YOGYAKARTA — Former President Barack Obama and his family wrapped up their five-day vacation on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali and headed to the historic city of Yogyakarta on Wednesday during a nostalgic trip to the country where Obama lived for several years as a child. Obama, his wife Michele and daughters Malia and Sasha drove to a luxury hotel in downtown Yogyakarta after arriving on a private jet at the city’s military airport, said Indonesian air force base commander Air Vice Marshal Novyan Samyoga. JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have imposed a travel ban on tycoon and politician Hary Tanoesoedibjo, who is building resorts to be managed by Trump hotels, over an investigation into allegations he threatened a prosecutor via a text message. Tanoesoedibjo has been given a 20-day overseas travel ban starting on June 22 based on a request by Indonesian police’s criminal investigation unit Agung Sampurno, a spokesman at the immigration directorate said on Wednesday. The Indonesian billionaire “is under investigation related to a violation of the information and electronic transactions law,” Sampurno said. Tanoesoedibjo, whose MNC Group controls businesses ranging from media to property, has been named a suspect for allegedly sending a threatening message to a prosecutor investigating a case involving Mobile 8, a telecommunications company previously owned by MNC Group. Tanoesoedibjo’s lawyer could not be reached on Wednesday but in an earlier statement dismissed the allegations. “The content of Hary Tanoesoedibjo’s SMS is general and idealistic and does not threaten anyone,” his lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea said. Part of Tanoesoedibjo’s text message read: “If I am

Second major cyber attack in two months disrupts businesses around world

FRANKFURT - A major cyber attack, believed to have first struck Ukraine, caused havoc around the world on Wednesday, crippling computers or halting operations at port operator Maersk, a Cadbury chocolate plant in Australia and the property arm of French bank BNP Paribas.

Russia’s biggest oil company, Ukrainian banks and multinational firms were among those hit on Tuesday by the cyber extortion campaign, which has underscored growing concerns that businesses have failed to secure their networks from increasingly aggressive hackers. The rapidly spreading computer worm appeared to be a variant of an existing ransomware family known as Petya which also has borrowed key features from last month’s ransomware attack, named “WannaCry”. ESET, an anti-virus vendor based in Bratislava, said 80 percent of all infections from the new attack detected among its global customer base were in Ukraine, with Italy second hardest hit at around 10 percent. Several of the international firms hit had operations in Ukraine. Shipping giant A.P. Helicopter attacks Venezuela court, Maduro denounces coup bid

CARACAS - A Venezuelan police helicopter strafed the Supreme Court and a government ministry on Tuesday, escalating the OPEC nation’s political crisis in what President Nicolas Maduro called an attack by “terrorists” seeking a coup. The aircraft fired 15 shots at the Interior Ministry, where scores of people were at a social event, and dropped four grenades on the court, where judges were meeting, officials said. However, there were no reports of injuries. “Sooner rather than later, we are going to capture the helicopter and those behind this armed terrorist attack against the institutions of the country,” Maduro said. “They could have caused dozens of deaths,” he said. The 54-year-old socialist leader has faced three months of protests from opposition leaders who decry him as a dictator who has wrecked a once-prosperous economy. There has been growing dissent too from within government and the security forces. At least 75 people have died, and hundreds more been injured and arrested, in the anti-government unrest since April. Demonstrators are demanding general elections, measures to alleviate a brutal economic crisis, freedom for hundreds of jailed opposition activists, and independence for the opposition-controlled National Assembly legislature. Maduro says they are seeking a coup against him with the encouragement of a U.S. government eager to gain control of Venezuela’s oil reserves, the largest in the world.

Venezuela’s government said in a communique the helicopter was stolen by investigative police pilot Oscar Perez, who declared himself in rebellion against Maduro. Images shared on social and local media appear to show Perez waving a banner from the helicopter reading “Liberty”, and the number “350” in large letters. The number refers to the constitutional article allowing people the right to oppose an undemocratic government. A video posted on Perez’ Instagram account around the same time showed him standing in front of several hooded armed men, saying an operation was underway to restore democracy. Perez said in the video he represented a coalition of military, police and civilian officials opposed to the “criminal” government, urged Maduro’s resignation and called for general elections. “This fight is ... against the vile government. Against tyranny,” he said. Local media also linked Perez to a 2015 action film, Suspended Death, which he co-produced and starred in as an intelligence agent rescuing a kidnapped businessman. On Tuesday, witnesses reported hearing several detonations in downtown Caracas, where the pro-Maduro Supreme Court, the presidential palace and other key government buildings are located. Opponents to Maduro view the Interior Ministry as a bastion of repression and also hate the Supreme Court for its string of rulings bolstering the president’s power and undermining the oppositioncontrolled legislature. JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities have imposed a travel ban on tycoon and politician Hary Tanoesoedibjo, who is building resorts to be managed by Trump hotels, over an investigation into allegations he threatened a prosecutor via a text message. Tanoesoedibjo has been given a 20-day overseas travel ban starting on June 22 based on a request by Indonesian police’s criminal investigation unit Agung Sampurno, a spokesman at the immigration directorate said on Wednesday. The Indonesian billionaire “is under investigation related to a violation of the information and electronic transactions law,” Sampurno said. BUSINESS Tourist trap: China’s surpluses may be bigger than thought LONDON - Tales of Chinese tourist largesse providing a big boost to destination economies are legend. They may also be incorrect, with China’s current account surpluses understated as a result. Anna Wong, a senior economist with the U.S. Federal Reserve, reckons the money spent overseas by Chinese tourists -- some $215 billion last year, according to one industry estimate -- is not all it is cracked up to be. In a draft paper for the Fed’s governors, Wong says a large amount of the money designated as having come from Chinese tourists globally should actually count as investment in assets. “Financial outflows concealed as travel imports are large and significant, growing to around 1 percent of China’s GDP in 2015 and 2016, and account for a quarter of recorded net private financial outflows,” she wrote. This would mean that China’s current account surpluses over the past few years are actually larger than reported, and possibly as big as before the financial crisis. China’s capital controls make it difficult for wealthier Chinese to invest abroad. But the implication of Wong’s findings is that there are a plethora of ways for the country’s “tourists” to buy property and other assets overseas. Factors suggesting this is happening come down to the amount of money being reported as touristrelated versus the actual macroeconomic conditions surrounding it. One example is that China’s travel expenditure as a share of GDP was reported to be higher than Britain’s in 2014, even though the latter’s per capita GDP is seven times China’s. Similarly, in the same year, spending by Chinese tourists abroad was reported to have increased four times faster than the actual number of tourists. The way that money designated as tourist inflows ends up as asset buying is mainly anecdotal. But it does have some impact on both tourist economies and China’s finances. Parliament urges presence of tourist fast boat in Bali Strait NEGARA — Jembrana House of Representatives encourage the presence of fast boat for crossings in the Bali Strait. However, this boat is specialized for tourism purposes connecting Banyuwangi to Jembrana through the traditional harbor. Chairman of the Jembrana House of Representatives, I Ketut Sugiasa, when met amid the discussion on the amended budget plan last week said that the sea transportation is needed to support tourism in Jembrana. Moreover, this time government of Jembrana with Banyuwangi district has owned cooperation agreement related to this tourism. It was made by the Jembrana parliament during a working visit to Banyuwangi not long ago. “One of them is related to this fast boat. We encourage the tourism office to immediately realize this to support tourism in Gilimanuk,” said this PDI-P politician from Dauhwaru. Currently, there has been a wooden pier in Karangsewu, Gilimanuk, to be functioned as a point of entry for tourists. This pier will be connected to a similar (traditional) pier at some points in Banyuwangi where one of them is in Watu Dodol. “We will leave the management to a third party (private sector). Then, we’ll allocate budget for the repair of the pier first,” he said. At that time, they had the opportunity to watch dance performance and innovative music presented by Pancer Langit art community of Badung in the Ksiraarnawa Building, Bali Art Center. The performance featuring the Aci Tulak Tunggul ritual at Taman Ayun Mengwi (Badung) is a source of inspiration for the art creativity successfully combining a variety of arts such as dance, music, vocal and okokan (cowbell art) harmoniously in a single story composition. In order to thicken the innovative nuances of the performance, the art director A.A. Gede Agung Rahma Putra also involved the famous comedian Cedil to enliven the atmosphere. The community based in Kapal village, Mengwi, opened its art presentation with an innovative slonding gamelan composition entitled Giri Tirtha. This musical composition is inspired by water as a gift of God that must be understood and used wisely. After the opening gamelan composition, the audience was presented with the main performance of the Aci Tulak Tunggul. This innovative performance supported by beautiful lighting tells about the king of Mengwi’s bad feeling amid the prosperous life of his people. The king thought there would be a great incident that hits the kingdom of Mengwi. In fact, such bad premonition really happened. The large embankment becoming the source of irrigation for subak at Taman Ayun under Mengwi kingdom and residence of wong samar (unseen beings) is reported to have collapsed. Due to the collapse, people are very restless because the unseen being whose residence

is disturbed begins to disrupt the life of Mengwi people. To control the chaotic condition and restore to the original condition, the king of Mengwi performs Siwasraya to seek guidance from God. With strong efforts and determination, finally the king of Mengwi gets revelation to hold a ritual known as the Aci Tulak Tunggul. It is equipped with a sacred dance where the dancers dressed in dried banana leaves. With sacred offerings held at the Taman Ayun embankment, the people of Mengwi can regain the peace after having been torn apart. Other than the support of dance movement aesthetically choreographed by IGN Agung Giri Putra assisted by Putu Anggradana, Ida Bagus Eka Haristha and Kadek Karunia Artha, the performance lasting about an hour became more special by the appearance of Brahma Diva Kencana cowbell art troupe that appeared in the last session. BRASILIA - President Michel Temer called a corruption charge filed against him by Brazil’s top prosecutor a “fiction” on Tuesday, as the nation’s political crisis deepened under the second president faced with possible removal from office in just over a year. Temer, who was charged Monday night with arranging to receive millions of dollars in bribes, said the move would hurt Brazil’s economic recovery and possibly paralyze efforts at reform. The conservative leader said executives of the world’s biggest meatpacker, JBS SA , who accused him in plea-bargain testimony of arranging to take 38 million reais ($11.47 million) in bribes in the coming months, did so only to escape jail for their own crimes. “I have been charged with taking bribes without ever having received a cent,” Temer said in a nationally televised speech. “I’ve never seen any of that money and I have never taken part in planning to commit any crimes.” He added: “I tell you, my friends, without any fear of error, that this charge is a fiction.” Under Brazilian law, now that Prosecutor General Rodrigo Janot has charged Temer, it is up to the House of Deputies to vote on whether or not to allow the Supreme Court to try the leader, who replaced impeached leftist President Dilma Rousseff last year. Two-thirds of the lower house must vote against Temer for his trial to occur. Temer’s allies in the lower house say they have the votes needed to block the charge. But Janot is widely expected to level fresh charges of racketeering and obstruction of justice against Temer in the coming weeks, forcing lawmakers into multiple votes on a possible presidential trial. Several top lawmakers allied with the ruling coalition have told Reuters they are concerned that multiple votes to protect a deeply unpopular leader could erode his support, eventually prying open the door to a trial. A full house vote on the first charge is expected to take place in about a month. Key to Temer’s survival is whether the Social Democracy Party (PSDB), Brazil’s third largest, will stick with his coalition or bolt. The party is deeply divided, with many members wanting to distance themselves from Temer to improve their re-election chances next year. Can electroacupuncture decrease stress incontinence?

BEIJING - Acupuncture paired with mild electric currents may be better than doing nothing at all to relieve a common type of urinary incontinence in women, a Chinese study suggests.

All of the 504 women in the study had stress incontinence, which happens when the pelvic muscles are too weak to prevent urinary leakage when women do things like cough, sneeze or exercise. Childbirth is a common reason for weak pelvic muscles and obesity makes the problem worse. Researchers tested what’s known as electroacupuncture, where an electrical current is passed between a pair of acupuncture needles compared to a dummy treatment with similar needles, for six weeks. Women who received electroacupuncture had a greater decrease in urine leakage after treatment and after six months than the participants who got the sham intervention, researchers report in JAMA. “The safety and effect of electroacupuncture for stress urinary incontinence were comparable to those of pelvic floor muscle training,” an approach currently used in some instances to help women reduce leakage, said senior study author Dr. Baoyan Liu of Guang’an Men Hospital, which is affiliated with the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing. “Electroacupuncture was effective with rapid response, short treatment period and good compliance,” Liu said by email. “Pelvic floor muscle training takes at least three months with less compliance.” At the start of the study, women in the electroacupuncture group leaked an average of 18.4 grams of

urine during a one-hour pad test and had an average of 7.9 episodes of leakage in a typical 72-hour period. By comparison, women in the sham treatment group had average leakage of 19.4 grams and experienced 7.7 episodes in a typical 72-hour period. Women assigned to electroacupuncture had 18 sessions over six weeks. The treatment consisted of inserting needles at traditional acupoints in the lumbrosacral region near the small of the back and the back of the pelvis near the hips. Women in the control group got sham electroacupuncture at nonacupoints in the same region of the back. After six weeks, women who got electroacupuncture had an average decrease in urine leakage of 9.9 grams, compared with a 2.6 gram decrease among women in the group that got the sham treatment. With electroacupuncture, women averaged one less episode of leakage in 72 hours than those in the comparison group. Over six months, there were also some time periods when electroacupuncture was associated with a bigger reduction in the number of episodes of incontinence, but this didn’t happen consistently. Side effects associated with treatment such as fatigue and hematoma, or swelling of clotted blood inside tissue, occurred with 1.6 percent of women in the electroacupuncture group and 2 percent of the other participants. One limitation of the study is the lack of a clinically meaningful reduction in the average amount of urine that leaked before and after treatment, the authors note. They also didn’t assess the amount of urine leaked after treatment stopped. (rtr)

California to list glyphosate as cancer-causing; Monsanto vows fight

CALIFORNIA - Glyphosate, an herbicide and the active ingredient in Monsanto Co’s popular Roundup weed killer, will be added to California’s list of chemicals known to cause cancer effective July 7, the state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said on Monday. Monsanto vowed to continue its legal fight against the designation, required under a state law known as Proposition 65, and called the decision “unwarranted on the basis of science and the law.” The listing is the latest legal setback for the seeds and chemicals company, which has faced increasing litigation over glyphosate since the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is “probably carcinogenic” in a controversial ruling in 2015. Dicamba, a weed killer designed for use with Monsanto’s next generation of biotech crops, is under scrutiny in Arkansas after the state’s plant board voted last week to ban the chemical. OEHHA said the designation of glyphosate under Proposition 65 will proceed following an unsuccessful attempt by Monsanto to block the listing in trial court and after requests for stay were denied by a state appellate court and the California’s Supreme Court. Monsanto’s appeal of the trial

court’s ruling is pending. “This is not the final step in the process, and it has no bearing on the merits of the case. We will continue to aggressively challenge this improper decision,” Scott Partridge, Monsanto’s vice president of global strategy, said. Listing glyphosate as a known carcinogen under California’s Proposition 65 would require companies selling the chemical in the state to add warning labels to packaging. MANGUPURA — To promote tourism, especially to Japan, the government will invite tourism players. It needs to be carried out because the tourism players are very potential to bring in tourists to Bali. To that end, Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Juniartha Putra, said that his office will immediately convey it to central government to re-promote tourism to Japan. To bring in tourists must be supported by some main factors. One of them is the smoothness of transportation (flight) on a regular basis. In the meantime, terminated flights of Japan Airlines (JAL) in September 2010 have an impact on drastic drop in tourist visit from Japan. “The country has considerable potential. Hostels in Ubud increasingly rampant

Chairman of the Ubud Home Stay Association (UHSA), I.B. Wiryawan, said that the development of accommodations similar to home stays and offering low room rates is posing a challenge to home stay owners in Ubud. “ Actually it is clear that they (hostels-ED) are prohibited but they are not being regulated and they are mushrooming in the area” he said. Gus De added that he would like to see the role of the Customary Village becoming more powerful in arranging how tourism develops – especially in Ubud and surrounding area. “The strength of the Customary Villages lies in the perarem (addendum to customary bylaw). These can be used as guidelines for maintaining and preserving home stays in Ubud that have become iconic of this area”, he explained. At present, there are 340 home-stays around Ubud and Peliatan village with some 2,000 rooms ready to accommodate tourists. “This is just home stays – not to mention the other accommodations. The number of tourists however is not balanced with the number of available rooms. Hotel occupancy rates reaches a maximum of 60 percent and on normal days is around 40 percent. That means a lot of empty rooms”, he explained. The room rate competition in Ubud he said is getting ugly. According to Gus De, ideally room rates for home stays should be somewhere between IDR 350,000 and IDR 400,000 per room per night. “The number of rooms and the number of tourists has become out of balance and this needs to be considered. I have proposed to halt the construction of new hotels in order to allowed Ubud to improve” he said. Previously, Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta, said that based on data collection conducted earlier this year, there are about 20 more hostels around Ubud. “We will control this, so that there are no more new hostels as this causes unfair room rate competition”, he said. Hostel are not classified as accommodation according to the regulations regarding the arrangement and control of tourists accommodations as set forth by the Regent of Gianyar. So far, most hostel owners are using home-stay permits. “On average, they use home-stay permits. However, home-stays usually have just two beds in each room, while hostel can provide up to 10 beds per room”, he explained. The Gianyar Tourism Office is currently in the process of informing hostel owners in Ubud about this matter. If conditions persist we will coordinate with the municipal police to handle to handle the matter. “ We will summon the hostel owners and then urge them to turn their accommodations back into home stays”, he said. This man familiarly addressed as Gung Ari added that apart from triggering room rate competition, hostels also have a significant impact on the image of cultural tourism. “ Obviously hostels are different because they do not offer tourism-village-based accommodation as one room holds up to 10 beds, compared to the two beds per room offered by home stays”, he affirmed. Ubud still has beggars

GIANYAR - The tourism area of Ubud is still dealing with the issue of beggars on the main street. Despite intensive efforts to free this tourist area from the presence of beggars, they continue to be a problem. Many fear that they could harm the image of Ubud tourism. Most of the beggars operate in area that are crowded with tourists and many of them bring their small children along to elicite sympathy. Many beggars took advantage of the to Eid al-Fitr holiday try their luck. Head of the Gianyar Municipal Police, Cokorda Gde Agusnawa, said on Tuesday (Jun. 27) that this social problem is quite difficult to resolve. Although many efforts have been made to curb begging, it remains rampant. They seem to not be deterred and continue to return to tourist-dense areas to beg, he said. . “Actually, both the municipal police and Ubud’s pecalang (customary security guard) have been pro-active in getting rid of the beggars, but they just return again later”’ he said. Agusnawa explained that most of the beggars are from Karangasem and in fact it is the same people who have arrested and brought back to Karangasem several times, but they always return. He added that there are more beggars during the holidays and that when they are arrested they are always given guidance and sent back to their region of origin. “During holidays the social services offices and the local government of Karangasem are closed so it makes it hard to act now. Once the holiday is over we will start the process again” he added. (kmb25)

LOS ANGELES - Australian model and actress Miranda Kerr has handed over millions of dollars worth of jewelry that U.S. authorities say was given to her as part of a Malaysian money laundering scheme, her spokesperson said on Tuesday. Kerr, a former Victoria’s Secret model, was given diamond pendants, earrings and other jewelry worth about $8 million in 2014 by Malaysian financier Jho Low, according to a June 15 U.S. Department of Justice civil lawsuit. Kerr is not accused of any wrongdoing and her spokesperson said she has co-operated fully with U.S. authorities from the start of the inquiry. “The transfer of the jewelry gifts from Ms. Kerr’s safe deposit box in Los Angeles to government agents was completed on last Friday afternoon,” the spokesperson said in a statement. The gifts of jewelry were detailed in the Justice Department’s lawsuit, in a long-running case over an alleged conspiracy to launder money misappropriated from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund, known as 1MDB, which was set up by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2009 to promote economic development.

The Justice Department alleges that more than $4.5 billion was taken from 1MDB by high-level fund officials and their associates. Kerr, who was in between marriages to actor Orlando Bloom and Snapchat cofounder Evan Spiegel at the time, was given a heartshaped diamond necklace worth $1.8 million, with her initials inscribed on the back, as a 2014 Valentine’s Day gift from Low, according to the lawsuit. Later in 2014, investigators said, Low gave Kerr a second, pink diamond, pendant worth $4.8 million, followed by matching earrings, a bracelet and a ring worth almost $2 million. The lawsuit said the funds for the jewelry were misappropriated from the 1MDB account. Low, whose whereabouts are unknown, could not be reached for comment. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio also is tied up in the scandal after accepting artwork by Picasso and Basquiat worth more than $12 million from financiers connected with the 1MDB case, along with an Oscar once owned by actor Marlon Brando. China’s navy launches latest-generation destroyer BEIJING — China’s increasingly powerful navy launched its most advanced domestically produced destroyer on Wednesday, at a time of rising competition with other naval powers such as the United States, Japan and India. The first 10,000-ton Type 055 entered the water at Shanghai’s Jiangnan Shipyard on Wednesday morning, the navy said in a statement. It said the ship is equipped with the latest air, missile, ship and submarine defense systems. China is believed to be planning to produce four of the ships.
