Ahead of Oscars, composer Morricone honored with Walk of Fame star

LOS ANGELES - Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, nominated for an Oscar this year for his work on “The Hateful Eight,” was awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on Friday, honoring his diverse career spanning decades. Morricone, 87, has composed the scores for more than 450 films, from 1960s Spaghetti Westerns including “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” to Quentin Tarantino’s frontier drama “The Hateful Eight.” “The international composers that had written in film, they have never had the pleasure that I have had today,” Morricone said in Italian at Friday’s ceremony. The veteran composer is the frontrunner to win his first ever Oscar in the best original score race on Sunday, after five nominations in previous years. “I never would have said it would be me, I never thought I would get it, when I would get it, if I would get it,” Morricone said about his Oscar nomination. Tarantino and Weinstein Company cofounder Harvey Weinstein were on hand to pay tribute to Morricone on Friday, with the director saying he had been a long-time fan of the composer. “I had a huge record collection I’d been collecting since I was a kid and I realized I

had more Ennio Morricone records than I have of anybody else,” Tarantino said. “This is one of the richest careers in our industry, who has brought so much joy,” Weinstein added. A Rome native, Morricone began his career as a film music composer in 1961 with “Il Federale.” He received an honorary Oscar in 2007 for “his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music,” working with directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Lina Wertmuller, Brian De Palma, Roman Polanski and Oliver Stone. The composer most notably collaborated with Sergio Leone on the director’s westerns starring Clint Eastwood, such as “A Fistful of Dollars,” “For a Few Dollars More,” and “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.” Additionally, he wrote the scores for “The Battle of Algiers,” “Cinema Paradiso” and “Once Upon a Time in America.” (rtr)

Huge Rally to Reject Reclamation Plan

Denpasar - The rejection on the reclamation plan is spreading throughout Bali. On Sunday, February 28, thousands of people from customary villages in Denpasar rallied to reject the plan. The customary villages joined the rally were Kepaon, Pemogan, Pedungan, Sesetan, Sanur, Jalak Sidakarya, Serangan, Renon, Ketewel, Blahbatuh and Lembongan.

They rallied on Bali Mandara toll and it was finished by placing a giant banner stating that they reject the Benoa bay reclamation plan. The head of the rally committee, I Made Pung Rahmanadi said that the rally is done because the members of the parliament don’t do anything about the reclamation plan. They cannot support the aspiration of the people in Bali. “There is great hope that this rally can make Indonesian President Jokowi cancel the decision to do reclamation in Benoa. The rally done by many people in Bali show that we reject the plan. We don’t want any kind of revitalisation or reclamation in Bali,” he added. The Head of Kepaon Customary Village, Ida Bagus Suteja said that to reject the plan, they even will go to Jakarta to meet the President himself. This is the effort to reject the reclamation plan. With all of this rejection, will the investors continue the plan or find another way to develop the tourism accommodation? Nevertheless, if the drug offender is found guilty, one of the incriminating considerations is that the defendant does not support the government’s efforts in combating drug trafficking. The verdict given by the judge depends on the role of the defendant. There are perpetrators or dealers or victims. The verdict is also seen from the number of evidence. So, the verdict is back to verification process before the court. When being unsatisfied, the prosecutor may appeal or file

cassation if the drug’s defendant is freed. Currently, there is a drug case remaining in the stage of cassation because the perpetrator arrested by Denpasar Police officer was acquitted by the judge, while his colleague remained to be sentenced to heavy penalties. However, the average sentence of drug case is more than one year in jail. There is even a foreigner sentenced for life. As observations in the Denpasar District Court, the drug offenses do not only involve local people, but also many foreigners. Last week, a smuggler of crystal meth weighing 1.516 grams gross, Sayeb Mohammed Said, 29, was sentenced to 20 years and a fine of IDR 1 billion by prosecutor Eddy Artha Wijaya. In addition, two other people allegedly linked to this case (courier), namely Agus Supriyadi and Rudy Supriyanto, were sentenced to 20 years deducted with detention period.

Before the judges led by Dewa Suardhita the prosecutor declared the defendant Sayeb Mohammed Said was arrested at the Ngurah Rai Airport having escaped from smuggling drugs from Bangkok to Bali. This defendant from India working as sailor was found guilty of violating the provisions of Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. The defendant is considered to have imported the first class narcotic weighing not more than 5 grams without permission of the authorities. In 2015, precisely last July, a male citizen from Australia, Nicolas James Langan, 24, was only sentenced to 12 months by the judges. Other than Nocolas, his colleague who is also a driver, Hanung Pekik Hermantoro, 25, got the same punishment, namely one year in prison in the trial of the Denpasar District Court. The judge considered that the defendants were proved to have

jointly abused narcotic belonging to marijuana weighing 0.1 gram net and 0.86 gram net for them. They were charged under Article 127 paragraph 1 letter (a) of the Law No.35/2009 in conjunction with

Article 55 paragraph 1 of the first point of Criminal Code on narcotics. Both defendants have been proved to use narcotic (marijuana) together without the right for themselves. (kmb37)

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on

the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars,

tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

We’ve agreed that we will make Peninsula Island an activity center,” he said. Wirawan invite all the components to help maintain ITDC free from plastic garbage. He said that currently Nusa Dua has a beautiful place called Peninsula Island. Many people visit this place to watch water blow and doing selfie.

BEIRUT - War planes attacked six towns in Syria’s northern Aleppo province early on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, a day after a cessation of hostilities agreement took effect. Syrian insurgents said the air strikes were carried out by Russian war planes in support of Syria’s government, but the Observatory which monitors the conflict said the identity of the jets was not clear. “We do not know which planes carried out the strikes and also we are not sure if this is considered a breach to the truce because it is not clear if these towns are included in the truce,” the Observatory’s director Rami Abdulrahman said. Syria’s state media did not mention the strikes. Russia’s defence ministry declined to comment. JAKARTA - A total of 1,277 personnel of the Indonesian Marine Corps have been readied to help secure the Extraordinary Meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jakarta on March 6 and 7. Chief of the Marine command-2 Brig.Gen. (Marine) Hasanuddin led a rehearsal of the marine soldiers in Cilandak, South Jakarta, on Friday, as part of their preparation to secure the OICs gathering. The marine security personnel will be led by its commander, Lt.Col. (Marine) Ena Sulaksana, “Antara” has learned. According to him, the marine personnel, under the coordination of Jakarta Military Command, will merge with other security squads who will guard the ranking officials of the countries participating in the

LONDON - The introduction of Formula One’s new qualifying system will be delayed until the fifth race of the season due to technical issues, the sport’s commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Saturday. The season starts in Australia on March 20 but the new qualifying format, announced by the governing FIA last week, will require changes to the software controlling the timing system. “My guys who do the timing said: ‘Mr E, we don’t want to be put in the position because we don’t think we can get it done properly in time,” Ecclestone told the BBC. He said that the new format would probably be introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix in May instead. The season is due to feature a record 21 races. Ecclestone’s Formula One Management handles the timing software, along with screen graphics and data, and he explained that the changes involved in the new elimination format were not straightforward.

“If you’re going to try and explain it to the public properly, it’s not just a case of ‘Okay, the guy was the last one, bye-bye’,” he said. “We’ll have to deal with it. I’ve told the FIA this and asked them what they’d like to do with it but the bottom line is there’s not a lot they can do with it because we do all the timekeeping.” Under the new procedure, the slowest drivers will be eliminated as the three sessions progress rather than at the end of each phase. After seven minutes of the first session have elapsed, the slowest driver is eliminated with others following at 90-second intervals. Fifteen of the 22 go through to the next phase, with the slowest eliminated after six minutes. The same 90-second sequence ensues until eight drivers are left. The final session sees one driver eliminated after five minutes and then one every 90 seconds until two are left fighting for pole position with one-and-a-half minutes remaining. (rtr)

The head of world soccer will no longer be the bestpaid person in the governing body under reforms instigated to curb the president’s powers after corruption scandals that threatened FIFA’s existence. Instead, Infantino’s No. 2 — a chief executive in an overhauled FIFA structure — will now receive a bigger pay packet than the president, a person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday. A three-man remuneration committee decided that neither Infantino nor his CEO should earn more than Blatter, who was reported to have earned around $6 million — a figure not denied by FIFA and which is likely to have fluctuated based on bonuses. Infantino, the outgoing UEFA general secretary, plans to appoint a non-European CEO. As powers are separated across the executive, the SwissItalian will have no influence over commercial contracts so will not receive bonuses, the person said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because FIFA salaries are not cur-

rently allowed to be discussed publicly. LONDON - The introduction of Formula One’s new qualifying system will be delayed until the fifth race of the season due to technical issues, the sport’s commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Saturday. The season starts in Australia on March 20 but the new qualifying format, announced by the governing FIA last week, will require changes to the software controlling the timing system. “My guys who do the timing said: ‘Mr E, we don’t want to be put in the position because we don’t think we can get it done properly in time,” Ecclestone told the BBC. He said that the new format would probably be introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix in May instead. The season is due to feature a record 21 races. Ecclestone’s Formula One Management handles the timing software, along with screen graphics and data, and he explained that the changes involved in the new elimination format were not straightforward.

“If you’re going to try and explain it to the public properly, it’s not just a case of ‘Okay, the guy was the last one, bye-bye’,” he said. “We’ll have to deal with it. I’ve told the FIA this and asked them what they’d like to do with it but the bottom line is there’s not a lot they can do with it because we do all the timekeeping.” Under the new procedure, the slowest drivers will be eliminated as the three sessions progress rather than at the end of each phase. After seven minutes of the first session have elapsed, the slowest driver is eliminated with others following at 90-second intervals. Fifteen of the 22 go through to the next phase, with the slowest eliminated after six minutes. The same 90-second sequence ensues until eight drivers are left. The final session sees one driver eliminated after five minutes and then one every 90 seconds until two are left fighting for pole position with one-and-a-half minutes remaining. (rtr)

While gains by moderates and reformists in Friday’s polls were most evident in the capital, Tehran, the sheer scale of the advances there suggests a legislature more friendly to the pragmatist Rouhani has emerged as a distinct possibility. NUSA DUA – Action to clean plastic garbage was held by Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) on Friday (26/2). Hundreds of people were involved in this action to clean the ITDC area from plastic garbage. ITDC’s Director of Operations, AA Ngurah Wirawan said the action involving hundreds of people from 15 hotels, six villas and 7 tenants in the area. “We are gathered today to clean up our great assets called Peninsula Island. We’ve agreed that we will make Peninsula Island an activity center,” he said. Wirawan invite all the components to help maintain ITDC free from plastic garbage. He said that currently Nusa Dua has a beautiful place called Peninsula Island. Many people visit this place to watch water blow and doing selfie.

But, unfortunately, visitors littered carelessly. He expressed that visitors should participate in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of this island. “Many of the visitors come to take pictures. But unfortunately they also throw garbage in this area. You can see cigarette butts and plastic waste in this water blow. Clean up this rock is very difficult,” he said. Wirawan said in the future, ITDC will place more trash can so people can throw garbage properly. He said since the beginning, ITDC has been separating plastic waste

and trying to suppress the production of plastic waste. ITDC itself has to process organic waste and wastewater management. Organic waste is processed into compost while wastewater from the hotel reuse for watering. The lagoon that is used as a sewage treatment is now the habitat of many birds and aquatic animals. Manager of Ayodya Hotel and Resort, Ketut Wirabawa also expressed the same opinion. He hopes that visitors and tourists can participate in maintaining cleanliness. “In the future, the management of this area should be more firm in taking action against the dumping of garbage, if necessary, the addition of CCTV for surveillance,” he said. Thirteen people were arrested following the melee, including one Klan member who is accused of stabbing a counter-protester with a flagpole, said Anaheim Police Sergeant Daron Wyatt. BEIRUT - War planes attacked six towns in Syria’s northern Aleppo province early on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, a day after a cessation of hostilities agreement took effect. Syrian insurgents said the air strikes were carried out by Russian war planes in support of Syria’s government, but the Observatory which monitors the conflict said the identity of the jets was not clear. “We do not know which planes carried out the strikes and also we are not sure if this is considered a breach to the truce because it is not clear if these towns are included in the truce,” the Observatory’s director Rami Abdulrahman said. Syria’s state media did not mention the strikes. Russia’s defence ministry declined to comment. The cessation of hostilities, agreed as part of a U.S. and Russian plan, does not cover assaults on militants from Islamic State or the Nusra Front - an al Qaeda affiliate

The verdict given by the judge depends on the role of the defendant. There are perpetrators or dealers or victims. The verdict is also seen from the number of evidence. So, the verdict is back to verification process before the court. When being unsatisfied, the prosecutor may appeal or file

cassation if the drug’s defendant is freed. Currently, there is a drug case remaining in the stage of cassation because the perpetrator arrested by Denpasar Police officer was acquitted by the judge, while his colleague remained to be sentenced to heavy penalties. However, the average sentence of drug case is more than one year in jail. There is even a foreigner sentenced for life. As observations in the Denpasar District Court, the drug offenses do not only involve local people, but also many foreigners. Last week, a smuggler of crystal meth weighing 1.516 grams gross, Sayeb Mohammed Said, 29, was sentenced to 20 years and a fine of IDR 1 billion by prosecutor Eddy Artha Wijaya. In addition, two other people allegedly linked to this case (courier), namely Agus Supriyadi and Rudy Supriyanto, were sentenced to 20 years deducted with detention period.

Before the judges led by Dewa Suardhita the prosecutor declared the defendant Sayeb Mohammed Said was arrested at the Ngurah Rai Airport having escaped from smuggling drugs from Bangkok to Bali. This defendant from India working as sailor was found guilty of violating the provisions of Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. The defendant is considered to have imported the first class narcotic weighing not more than 5 grams without permission of the authorities. In 2015, precisely last July, a male citizen from Australia, Nicolas James Langan, 24, was only sentenced to 12 months by the judges. Other than Nocolas, his colleague who is also a driver, Hanung Pekik Hermantoro, 25, got the same punishment, namely one year in prison in the trial of the Denpasar District Court. The judge considered that the defendants were proved to have

jointly abused narcotic belonging to marijuana weighing 0.1 gram net and 0.86 gram net for them. They were charged under Article 127 paragraph 1 letter (a) of the Law No.35/2009 in conjunction with

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on

the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars,

tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Ahead of Oscars, composer Morricone honored with Walk of Fame star

LOS ANGELES - Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, nominated for an Oscar this year for his work on “The Hateful Eight,” was awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on Friday, honoring his diverse career spanning decades. Morricone, 87, has composed the scores for more than 450 films, from 1960s Spaghetti Westerns including “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” to Quentin Tarantino’s frontier drama “The Hateful Eight.” “The international composers that had written in film, they have never had the pleasure that I have had today,” Morricone said in Italian at Friday’s ceremony. The veteran composer is the frontrunner to win his first ever Oscar in the best original score race on Sunday, after five nominations in previous years. “I never would have said it would be me, I never thought I would get it, when I would get it, if I would get it,” Morricone said about his Oscar nomination. Tarantino and Weinstein Company cofounder Harvey Weinstein were on hand to pay tribute to Morricone on Friday, with the director saying he had been a long-time fan of the composer. “I had a huge record collection I’d been collecting since I was a kid and I realized I

had more Ennio Morricone records than I have of anybody else,” Tarantino said. “This is one of the richest careers in our industry, who has brought so much joy,” Weinstein added. A Rome native, Morricone began his career as a film music composer in 1961 with “Il Federale.” He received an honorary Oscar in 2007 for “his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music,” working with directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Lina Wertmuller, Brian De Palma, Roman Polanski and Oliver Stone. The composer most notably collaborated with Sergio Leone on the director’s westerns starring Clint Eastwood, such as “A Fistful of Dollars,” “For a Few Dollars More,” and “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.” Additionally, he wrote the scores for “The Battle of Algiers,” “Cinema Paradiso” and “Once Upon a Time in America.” (rtr)

Huge Rally to Reject Reclamation Plan

Denpasar - The rejection on the reclamation plan is spreading throughout Bali. On Sunday, February 28, thousands of people from customary villages in Denpasar rallied to reject the plan. The customary villages joined the rally were Kepaon, Pemogan, Pedungan, Sesetan, Sanur, Jalak Sidakarya, Serangan, Renon, Ketewel, Blahbatuh and Lembongan.

They rallied on Bali Mandara toll and it was finished by placing a giant banner stating that they reject the Benoa bay reclamation plan. The head of the rally committee, I Made Pung Rahmanadi said that the rally is done because the members of the parliament don’t do anything about the reclamation plan. They cannot support the aspiration of the people in Bali. “There is great hope that this rally can make Indonesian President Jokowi cancel the decision to do reclamation in Benoa. The rally done by many people in Bali show that we reject the plan. We don’t want any kind of revitalisation or reclamation in Bali,” he added. The Head of Kepaon Customary Village, Ida Bagus Suteja said that to reject the plan, they even will go to Jakarta to meet the President himself. This is the effort to reject the reclamation plan. With all of this rejection, will the investors continue the plan or find another way to develop the tourism accommodation? Most of the people reject the revitalisation or reclamation plan because they think that it is not necessary and doesn’t give any benefit.(win)
