Witherspoon goes on a soul-baring ride in ‘Wild’

NEW YORK — Once she’d decided to take on her gritty new role in “Wild,” there were a few things Reese Witherspoon knew she didn’t want to hear from movie studio executives: “We want her to be more likable.” “We don’t want her to use drugs.” “We don’t want her to be profane.” And so, Witherspoon says, she didn’t give them the chance. She developed the film, which follows a hardliving woman’s path to solace and redemption via a long trek in the wilderness, outside the studio system under the auspices of her own production company, with private financing. “And then I took it to the studios and said, ‘I’m not changing a word,’” Witherspoon recounts in an interview. “And I had three bids on it that day.” “And I think it’s important, you know?” the actress adds. “You grow up, you change — I’m a 38-year old woman now, I have three kids, and I’ve lived a lot of life experience. It’s really important to me that the things I put out into the world are meaningful and thoughtprovoking. Otherwise, what am I doing?” “Wild,” based on the best-selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed, is a story of personal catharsis, and listening to Witherspoon, one gets the sense she was seeking a sort of professional catharsis by choosing it. The role, which has garnered significant Oscar buzz, includes difficult scenes depicting rough sex and heroin use. Witherspoon wore no makeup and spent days lugging a heavy backpack up and

down hills. “By far, it’s the hardest thing I’ve done in my life,” she says. “The physical aspects were really challenging — the elements, the heat, the cold, the water, the rain, 55 locations in 35 days, and carrying that backpack. And there was nothing else to cut to — just me.” Emotionally, it was even harder, she says: “One day I’d be getting divorced. Another, my mother would be dying. The next day I’d be using heroin. It was just nonstop — not even a roller coaster, just a continual descent downward! There are always scenes that I dread, that I say, ‘That day’s going to be miserable.’ And here, it was three weeks of that.” Witherspoon’s director, Jean-Marc Vallee, calls the actress “a trouper.” As well he should: He noticed that the backpack looked too light and forced her to carry a much heavier one. “And then he just walked away, and I was like, OK ...” Witherspoon laughs. “You can see it digging into my skin. Because it really WAS digging into my skin!” Vallee says Witherspoon “went out there with no makeup, looking like nothing, on the trail for 65 percent of the film, looking like a hiker, with a heavy backpack on her back. I removed the mirrors in the makeup trailer and she didn’t look at herself. “ Witherspoon, who already has one Oscar on the mantelpiece for 2005’s “Walk the Line,” says it was no accident that she chose such a film at this point in her career, a time that finds her veering away from trademark s u n n y, b r i g h t roles and romantic comedies. (Her 2012 supporting role in the Mississippi River coming-ofage tale “Mud” is another example of her new direction. “Wild,” which opens in select theaters Dec. 3, was an easy choice.

If the tourism sector increased, the economy of community would also increase. However, the tourism sector might not be lethal to other sectors, such as the agricultural sector such as in the matter of rampant land conversion.

AMLAPURA - Water of the open retention basin project is frequently littered with foliages as blown by wind. After that, the retention basin that is not cleared from foliages is prone to contain coliform bacteria. It was revealed by the Head of the Karangasem Environment Agency (BLH), Komang Agus Sukasena, after disseminating the results of research and monitoring on the quality of water and air in Karangasem, Wednesday (Nov 26). To avoid the water in the retention basin from being contaminated by coliform bacteria, the former subdistrict head of Bebandem said it should be regularly cleaned up from foliages at the bottom of the retention basin. From a variety of existing information, the coliform bacteria could produce etionin substance. When people constantly consumed it in the long term, it could cause cancer. Other than etionin, the spoilage bacteria also produced toxin such as indole and scatol. Coliform bacteria are used to detect the presence of pathogen in the water, so that they

are often used as indicator whether the water is polluted or not. Sukasena delivered that his party in Karangasem Environment Agency already examined and took the water samples at a number of points, such as Janga River and Pati River. Based on the results of the study, both rivers belonged to category 2. It meant the content of E. coli bacterium was still below hazardous threshold or relatively secure. For category two, the water was still feasible for livestock and agriculture or fisheries. Meanwhile, the water of Unda River still belonged to category one, which meant that it was very feasible for livestock and agriculture. SINGARAJA - Dozens of hectares of paddy fields at Bebetin and Sawan village, Sawan subdistrict are threatened to lack for water in the next planting season. This happened after the breakdown of the irrigation channel leading to paddy fields due to heavy rain within the past few days. In addition, the breakdown of the irrigation channel is worried to soak the house of Kadek Mariani, 38, a resident of Kusia hamlet, Bebetin village. Chief of Subak Kusia, I Made Asta, when met on Wednesday (Nov 26) said the irrigation chan-

nel with a width of one meter so far had been used by farmers at some subak areas at Sawan village. Besides, the farmers of Subak Lanyahan at Bebetin village also used the water from the canal. On Monday (Nov 24), the irrigation channel collapsed along nine meters due to heavy rains. Even, the materials of breakdown irrigation channel almost hoarded the house of Kadek Mariani, a local resident. “When it rained, the irrigation channel broke down and almost hoarded a house of resident. Now, we are always afraid when it rains for fear that it will break down

again. If that happens, my home and shrines will be threatened. Hopefully, it can be repaired as soon as possible,” she said. On the other hand, Asta said the repair to the damaged irrigation channel was expected to be made soon. It was to prevent water shortages for cultivating paddy fields at two villages in the planting season this year. Most of the water was used by farmers at Subak Sawan, while the rest by farmers at Subak Kusia. As noted, a total of 20 hectares of paddy fields at Subak Kusia relied on their irrigation from the channel. While waiting for the coming

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BANGLI - The existence of solar power plant (PLTS) at Bangklet hamlet, Kayubihi village, Bangli, is not well maintained. It is evident from the number of weeds growing high in the solar panel area. Besides, police also set the son of Adi Wiryatama, Gede Made Dedy Pratama, and unscrupulous notary Ketut Nuridja as a suspect. SEMARAPURA - Police authority seized the subsidized fuel supplied to the archipelago of Lembongan, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, Monday (Nov 25). The confiscation was done to prevent fuel hoarding after the price hike. However, the action of police reaped strong protest from residents of Lembongan. Without the fuel supply sold at retail stalls, they automatically got difficulties to do activity in the tourist area. A local resident, Ketut Arjaya, revealed on Tuesday (Nov 26) that the confiscation had broad impact on people’s activity in Lembongan. They were very difficult to obtain fuel. All small stalls commonly provided fuel in retail ranging from Ceningan to Lembongan Island were suddenly closed. “If the confiscation continues, please give us solution where we should find fuel,” he said. He also doubted the reason of police to confiscate due to the allegation of hoarding in Lembongan. All this time, there had never been such an action in Lembongan. If the fuel supply to Lembongan was terminated, then the local economy would obviously get disturbed. A legislator of Klungkung House, Made Jana, when contacted on Wednesday (Nov 26) admitted that he had heard about the public outcry. The people’s representative from Nusa Penida electoral district said the Regent of Klungkung Nyoman Suwirta immediately held a closed meeting with him and Klungkung Police in the office of Regent Suwirta. The meeting could draw some conclusions. Among others, those who had recommendation of selling fuel were allowed to continue their business to maintain the economic viability of Lembongan and surrounding communities. Secondly, all stalls serving the sale of fuel in bottle were also allowed to run their business. Meanwhile, the legal process of people showing off an indication of having committed violation, namely hoarding and selling subsidized fuel to the unauthorized, should be resumed. FERGUSON, Missouri — Residents sought a return to normal Thursday as business owners boarded up windows and cleared away debris following unrest over a grand jury decision’s not to indict a white police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black 18-year-old. Protesters continued to hold scattered demonstrations, including a group that rushed into City Hall in St. Louis, the city neighboring Ferguson, Wednesday screaming “Shame, shame.” Police locked down the building and called in more than a hundred extra officers. Three people were arrested. About 200 demonstrators marched through downtown St. Louis and held a mock trial of Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown during an Aug. 9 struggle. The racially charged case has stoked passions nationwide, triggering debates over the relationship between black communities and law enforcement. Since the grand jury’s decision was announced Monday night, protesters in cities throughout the country have rallied behind the refrain “hands up, don’t shoot,” and drawn attention to other police killings. In New York City on Wednesday, Brown’s parents joined the families of two other black men who were unarmed when they died at the hands of police. The families joined arms with civil rights leader Al Sharpton and prayed for justice at the Harlem headquarters of Sharpton’s organization, the National Action Network. As the tension in Ferguson eased somewhat, Wilson broke his long public silence, insisting on national television that he could not have done anything differently in the Aug. 9 confrontation. WASHINGTON — U.S. consumers and businesses spent cautiously last month, a sign that strong growth during the spring and summer may decelerate in the final three months of the year. The figures released Wednesday were a mild disappointment after data the previous day showed the economy had expanded at the fastest pace in over a decade in the second and third quarters. “The economy is poised to slow again as we move into the fourth quarter, after a stellar catch-up from last year’s horrific winter weather,” Diane Swonk, an economist at Mesirow Financial, said in a note to clients. Consumers opened their wallets a bit in October, boosting their spending by a lukewarm 0.2 percent. That was only slightly better than September’s flat reading. Yet incomes also rose just 0.2 percent, matching September’s increase. Because hiring has been healthy this year, many economists have been expecting a stronger pickup in income. Limited increases in pay could restrain future spending by consumers, which accounts for 70 percent of the U.S. economy. Businesses also cut back on orders for industrial machinery, computers and other equipment, a sign that business investment spending may slow in the October-December quarter. Factories received fewer orders for the second straight month in a key category that tracks business investment plans. Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said he now expects the economy will expand at a

2.5 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, down from an earlier forecast of 3 percent. Macroeconomic Advisers, a forecasting firm, projects growth of just 2 percent. While those figures would represent modest progress, they are much lower than the third quarter’s 3.9 percent expansion and the second quarter’s 4.6 percent growth. The two quarters represent the best six-month pace since 2003. Other data on Wednesday painted a mixed picture of the U.S. economy, adding to the year-end uncertainty. In a positive sign, a measure of consumer sentiment by the University of Michigan rose to a seven-year high, suggesting consumers could ramp up their spending during the holiday shopping season. With a steadily improving job market and falling gas prices, economists say American households are ready to shed any lingering caution. The National Retail Federation, a trade group, is forecasting that holiday sales will rise 4.1 percent from last year. That would be the biggest gain in three years. Still, two additional reports Wednesday showed that housing, traditionally a key driver of the economy after recessions, remains sluggish. New home sales ticked up slightly to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 458,000 in October. But that figure is up only 1.8

percent from 12 months ago. Sharp price increases have likely held back sales: the price of a typical new home has soared 16.5 percent in the past year to $305,000. Separately, the number of signed contracts to buy homes fell slightly in October, which indicates that sales of existing homes may decline in the coming months. Existing home sales rose last month to an annual pace of 5.26 million, their fastest this year. But that’s still below the 5.5 million consistent with a healthy housing market. Inflation remains low, which could also help boost spending over the holidays. A price gauge included in the spending report rose by just 1.4 percent over the past 12 months, well below the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent inflation target. Many economists are still optimistic that greater hiring, as well as fewer government spending cuts and tax increases, will boost growth to about 3 percent in 2015. That would be the first full year to record 3 percent growth since 2005. The job market has made steady progress this year. Employers have added an average of 229,000 jobs a month through October. General Motors, the largest US automaker, already sells more cars in China each month than it does in its home market and expects that to continue. “Our joint ventures in China are working to boost production capacity by 30 percent to more than five million units annually by 2015,” GM executive Mary Barra told the firm’s annual shareholders meeting. GM launched a Chinese-produced luxury sedan, the XTS, last year and is steadily adding more vehicles to its Cadillac range. “Cadillac is already a very profitable business for us today and GM expects to see substantial growth for its luxury brand over the next few years, particularly in China where young consumers are open to new brands,” said Dan Ammann, GM president. GM a few months ago poached Johan De Nysschen, the former executive of Nissan’s luxury Audi and Infiniti brands, to head the Cadillac brand. The nameplate, part of GM since 1909, traces its roots to the French founder of Detroit -- today the heart of the US auto industry -- Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac. China will become a “volume hub” for the Cadillac brands, De Nysschen said recently. China, the world’s largest auto market, accounts for about 25 percent of global luxury car sales and its share is only growing. Amsterdam warns of dangerous drugs after 3 deaths Associated Press

AMSTERDAM — Health authorities in Amsterdam are warning of dangerous drugs being sold to tourists after three British men died in the last month after snorting heroin they may have believed was cocaine. A large sign outside the Dutch capital’s Central Station warned Thursday, “Extremely dangerous cocaine is sold to tourists” in the area. The warning campaign was started after two British men, aged 20 and 21, were found dead in a hotel room in the city on Tuesday. Police say they likely died after snorting “white heroin” they likely bought believing it was cocaine. Amsterdam police spokesman Rob van der Veen says the same drug is suspected in another British tourist’s death last month. Van der Veen says it is not yet clear why heroin is apparently being sold as cocaine.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s leader said Thursday that a colonial-era law curbing free speech will be retained and strengthened, backpedaling on a pledge two years ago to abolish the Sedition Act as part of political reforms. The law, introduced by the British in 1948, criminalizes speech or actions with an undefined “seditious tendency,” including that which promotes hatred against the government or incites racial discord. In a speech opening a three-day assembly of his ruling Malay party, Prime Minister Najib Razak said it will be bolstered to include provisions to defend Islam and other religions, and to act against those calling for the secession of Sabah and Sarawak states on Borneo island. Party delegates clapped loudly in approval. Rights groups have for years slammed the law as restraining free speech and as a tool by the government to silent dissent. At least 14 people including opposition lawmakers, academics and a journalist have been charged under the law since last year, mostly for criticizing the government or rul-

ing officials. Those found guilty face up to three years in prison and a fine. Human Rights Watch called the move a “major reversal of human rights.” In 2012, Najib said the law represented a “bygone era” and will be replaced with a new law to prevent the incitement of religious or racial hatred. Earlier that year, he also revoked a draconian security law allowing detention without trial and eased public assembly rules. Najib’s coalition performed poorly in 2013 general elections, and some rights groups interpreted his announcement as an attempt to strengthen his grip on power.

The Malaysia-based rights group Movement to Abolish Sedition Act, said it was “deeply disturbed and outraged” by the move, saying the sharp rise in sedition charges in the recent year showed that Najib’s government was still reliant on the law to control and suppress dissent. “There is no room for the Sedition Act in a democratic and modern Malaysia,” it said. MANADO - A powerful undersea earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, causing fresh panic in an area that has been hit by a series of strong tremors in recent days. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no reports of casualties or damage after the quake, which the US Geological Survey said had a magnitude of 6.8 and was 41 kilometres (25 miles) under the Molucca Sea. But people ran out of their homes in the city of Manado, on the northern tip of nearby Sulawesi island, where the quake was strongly felt. “I was watching television when I felt the ground shake strongly,” Hendra Pontoh, a resident of Manado, told AFP. “I screamed to my wife to get out

of the house and quickly took my five-year-old son, who was asleep in the bedroom, out of the house.” The initial quake was followed by three aftershocks measuring more than magnitude 5.0, said Jerisman Purba from the Indonesian meteorological agency. The quake, which struck at around 10:30 pm (1430 GMT), was the latest in a recent series of tremors under the Molucca Sea. On November 15, a 7.1-magnitude quake sparked a tsunami alert and generated tiny waves, but did not cause any casualties or damage.

After Wednesday’s quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami and local authorities did not issue an alert. The USGS originally put the magnitude at 7.0. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. A huge undersea quake in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Aceh province, on western Sumatra island, and tens of thousands more in other countries with coasts on the Indian Ocean.

BANDUNG - The Bandung corruption court in West Java on Thursday sentenced inactive Bogor district head Rahmat Yasin to five years and six months in jail following his conviction in a graft case. “We sentence the defendant to five years and six months in jail minus his detention period,” presiding judge Barita Lumban Gaol ruled. The court also ordered Yasin to pay a fine of Rp300 million or face an additional imprisonment of three months. Barita stated the defendant has been proven guilty of violating article 12 (a) of Law No. 31/1999, which was replaced by Law No.20/2001 related to corruption eradication. The jail sentence is two years lighter than what the public prosecutor had sought. The case surrounded the arrangement of recommendations for the issuance of land use permits related to forest areas in Bogor, West Java.

PALU - Five Chinese nationals arrested by immigration officers in Central Sulawesi Province have undergone interrogations and are waiting for the next legal procedure. “The interrogations of the foreigners are over,” Head of the Supervision and Law Enforcement Division of the Palu Immigration Office Amar B said on Thursday. The interrogations have concluded that the five Chinese nationals, namely, Yan Shiyuan, Yan Yong Sheng, Weng Kaiyue, Pan Erxing, and Xue Yong Yun, violated the Republic of Indonesia’s immigration law. Amar noted that they (the five Chinese nationals) had entered Indonesia with immigration documents such as passports and visas. “While three of them had Limited Residence Permit Card (KITAS), two only had their passports and visas,” he added. The foreigners were arrested when they were working at a mine in Quarry Site C of PT Optima Tiga Biru (OTB) located in Watusampu village, Ulujadi sub-district, Palu municipality, Central Sulawesi Province, on November 25. During the arrests, they just showed the photocopies of their visas and passports. The foreigners were taken to the Palu Immigration Office for interrogation and secured in a temporary immigration detention center. The foreigners stated they had been working in PT OTB’s mining site for two weeks. Although they produced their visas, passports, and KITAS, they will still be prosecuted for violating the immigration law of the country. The three foreigners who possessed KITAS and Foreign Labor Certification (IMTA) will be prosecuted because the card and certificate are permits to work only in North Jakarta and Sukabumi municipality. The two others only had social/cultural visit visa and still were working in Indonesia. “So, the five foreigners have violated the Republic of Indonesia’s immigration law,” Amar reiterated. According to him, the five Chinese citizens will likely be repatriated.

Sapporo looking to bid for 2026 Winter Olympics

European cities has turned against bidding for the Olympics in light of the $51 billion price tag associated with the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. The Japanese Olympic Committee will decide in 2016 which city will bid to host the event before International Olympic Committee members make their selection in 2019. Amsterdam warns of dangerous drugs after 3 deaths Associated Press

AMSTERDAM — Health authorities in Amsterdam are warning of dangerous drugs being sold to tourists after three British men died in the last month after snorting heroin they may have believed was cocaine. A large sign outside the Dutch capital’s Central Station warned Thursday, “Extremely dangerous cocaine is sold to tourists” in the area. The warning campaign was started after two British men, aged 20 and 21, were found dead in a hotel room in the city on Tuesday. Police say they likely died after snorting “white heroin” they likely bought believing it was cocaine. Amsterdam police spokesman Rob van der Veen says the same drug is suspected in another British tourist’s death last month. Van der Veen says it is not yet clear why heroin is apparently being sold as cocaine.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s leader said Thursday that a colonial-era law curbing free speech will be retained and strengthened, backpedaling on a pledge two years ago to abolish the Sedition Act as part of political reforms. The law, introduced by the British in 1948, criminalizes speech or actions with an undefined “seditious tendency,” including that which promotes hatred against the government or incites racial discord. In a speech opening a three-day assembly of his ruling Malay party, Prime Minister Najib Razak said it will be bolstered to include provisions to defend Islam and other religions, and to act against those calling for the secession of Sabah and Sarawak states on Borneo island. Party delegates clapped loudly in approval. Rights groups have for years slammed the law as restraining free speech and as a tool by the government to silent dissent. At least 14 people including opposition lawmakers, academics and a journalist have been charged under the law since last year, mostly for criticizing the government or rul-

ing officials. Those found guilty face up to three years in prison and a fine. Human Rights Watch called the move a “major reversal of human rights.” In 2012, Najib said the law represented a “bygone era” and will be replaced with a new law to prevent the incitement of religious or racial hatred. Earlier that year, he also revoked a draconian security law allowing detention without trial and eased public assembly rules. Najib’s coalition performed poorly in 2013 general elections, and some rights groups interpreted his announcement as an attempt to strengthen his grip on power.

MANADO - A powerful undersea earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, causing fresh panic in an area that has been hit by a series of strong tremors in recent days. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no reports of casualties or damage after the quake, which the US Geological Survey said had a magnitude of 6.8 and was 41 kilometres (25 miles) under the Molucca Sea. But people ran out of their homes in the city of Manado, on the northern tip of nearby Sulawesi island, where the quake was strongly felt. “I was watching television when I felt the ground shake strongly,” Hendra Pontoh, a resident of Manado, told AFP. “I screamed to my wife to get out

of the house and quickly took my five-year-old son, who was asleep in the bedroom, out of the house.” The initial quake was followed by three aftershocks measuring more than magnitude 5.0, said Jerisman Purba from the Indonesian meteorological agency. The quake, which struck at around 10:30 pm (1430 GMT), was the latest in a recent series of tremors under the Molucca Sea. On November 15, a 7.1-magnitude quake sparked a tsunami alert and generated tiny waves, but did not cause any casualties or damage.

After Wednesday’s quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami and local authorities did not issue an alert. The USGS originally put the magnitude at 7.0. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. A huge undersea quake in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Aceh province, on western Sumatra island, and tens of thousands more in other countries with coasts on the Indian Ocean.

BANDUNG - The Bandung corruption court in West Java on Thursday sentenced inactive Bogor district head Rahmat Yasin to five years and six months in jail following his conviction in a graft case. “We sentence the defendant to five years and six months in jail minus his detention period,” presiding judge Barita Lumban Gaol ruled. The court also ordered Yasin to pay a fine of Rp300 million or face an additional imprisonment of three months. Barita stated the defendant has been proven guilty of violating article 12 (a) of Law No. 31/1999, which was replaced by Law No.20/2001 related to corruption eradication. The jail sentence is two years lighter than what the public prosecutor had sought. The case surrounded the arrangement of recommendations for the issuance of land use permits related to forest areas in Bogor, West Java.

PALU - Five Chinese nationals arrested by immigration officers in Central Sulawesi Province have undergone interrogations and are waiting for the next legal procedure. “The interrogations of the foreigners are over,” Head of the Supervision and Law Enforcement Division of the Palu Immigration Office Amar B said on Thursday. The interrogations have concluded that the five Chinese nationals, namely, Yan Shiyuan, Yan Yong Sheng, Weng Kaiyue, Pan Erxing, and Xue Yong Yun, violated the Republic of Indonesia’s immigration law. Amar noted that they (the five Chinese nationals) had entered Indonesia with immigration documents such as passports and visas. “While three of them had Limited Residence Permit Card (KITAS), two only had their passports and visas,” he added. The foreigners were arrested when they were working at a mine in Quarry Site C of PT Optima Tiga Biru (OTB) located in Watusampu village, Ulujadi sub-district, Palu municipality, Central Sulawesi Province, on November 25. During the arrests, they just showed the photocopies of their visas and passports. The foreigners were taken to the Palu Immigration Office for interrogation and secured in a temporary immigration detention center. The foreigners stated they had been working in PT OTB’s mining site for two weeks. Although they produced their visas, passports, and KITAS, they will still be prosecuted for violating the immigration law of the country. The three foreigners who possessed KITAS and Foreign Labor Certification (IMTA) will be prosecuted because the card and certificate are permits to work only in North Jakarta and Sukabumi municipality. The two others only had social/cultural visit visa and still were working in Indonesia. “So, the five foreigners have violated the Republic of Indonesia’s immigration law,” Amar reiterated. According to him, the five Chinese citizens will likely be repatriated.

WASHINGTON — U.S. consumers and businesses spent cautiously last month, a sign that strong growth during the spring and summer may decelerate in the final three months of the year. The figures released Wednesday were a mild disappointment after data the previous day showed the economy had expanded at the fastest pace in over a decade in the second and third quarters. “The economy is poised to slow again as we move into the fourth quarter, after a stellar catch-up from last year’s horrific winter weather,” Diane Swonk, an economist at Mesirow Financial, said in a note to clients. Consumers opened their wallets a bit in October, boosting their spending by a lukewarm 0.2 percent. That was only slightly better than September’s flat reading. Yet incomes also rose just 0.2 percent, matching September’s increase. Because hiring has been healthy this year, many economists have been expecting a stronger pickup in income. Limited increases in pay could restrain future spending by consumers, which accounts for 70 percent of the U.S. economy. Businesses also cut back on orders for industrial machinery, computers and other equipment, a sign that business investment spending may slow in the October-December quarter. Factories received fewer orders for the second straight month in a key category that tracks business investment plans. Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, said he now expects the economy will expand at a

2.5 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, down from an earlier forecast of 3 percent. Macroeconomic Advisers, a forecasting firm, projects growth of just 2 percent. While those figures would represent modest progress, they are much lower than the third quarter’s 3.9 percent expansion and the second quarter’s 4.6 percent growth. The two quarters represent the best six-month pace since 2003. Other data on Wednesday painted a mixed picture of the U.S. economy, adding to the year-end uncertainty. In a positive sign, a measure of consumer sentiment by the University of Michigan rose to a seven-year high, suggesting consumers could ramp up their spending during the holiday shopping season. With a steadily improving job market and falling gas prices, economists say American households are ready to shed any lingering caution. The National Retail Federation, a trade group, is forecasting that holiday sales will rise 4.1 percent from last year. That would be the biggest gain in three years. Still, two additional reports Wednesday showed that housing, traditionally a key driver of the economy after recessions, remains sluggish. New home sales ticked up slightly to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 458,000 in October. But that figure is up only 1.8

General Motors, the largest US automaker, already sells more cars in China each month than it does in its home market and expects that to continue. “Our joint ventures in China are working to boost production capacity by 30 percent to more than five million units annually by 2015,” GM executive Mary Barra told the firm’s annual shareholders meeting. GM launched a Chinese-produced luxury sedan, the XTS, last year and is steadily adding more vehicles to its Cadillac range. “Cadillac is already a very profitable business for us today and GM expects to see substantial growth for its luxury brand over the next few years, particularly in China where young consumers are open to new brands,” said Dan Ammann, GM president. GM a few months ago poached Johan De Nysschen, the former executive of Nissan’s luxury Audi and Infiniti brands, to head the Cadillac brand. In Gianyar, billboards must feature Balinese typicality

GIANYAR - All this time billboards always give a chaotic expression to the look of each town. However, in the region of the art producer, in accordance with the Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.10/2013, all billboards are required to further highlight the characteristic of Bali embellished with Balinese carving or scripts. Unluckily, this regulation cannot be applied because it remains in the stage of socialization. The Head of Gianyar Government Tourism Office, A.A. Ari Brahmanta, said that to realize the culture-based town, Gianyar government had enacted the Regional Bylaw No.10/2013. It should be applied to all kinds of billboard in order to feature the distinctive characteristics of Bali. “Characteristic of this culture-based region will be more highlighted by regional bylaw that requires the billboards to use Balinese carving,” he said. Although the regulation had long been passed, he recognized that in practice hundreds of billboards still imply modern style, without a touch of Balinese typical culture and carving. “The bylaw has long been made, but still in the stage of socialization.

As a result, a lot of billboards still apply modern style. Later, we will draft a regent regulation to affirm this issue,” he said. He added that other than showing off the culture-based town, by revising the billboards that use Balinese carving. His party also planned to propose the additional use of Balinese scripts. “We’d like to more highlight the characteristic of a cultural town by imitating Yogyakarta remaining to preserve Javanese ornaments and scripts. DENPASAR - Related to the report on the allegation case of land certificate forgery with the land area of 470 square meters at Beraban village, Kediri, Tabanan, Directorate of General Crime Investigator of Bali Police finally set the Chairman of Bali House, I Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, as a suspect. Besides, police also set the son of Adi Wiryatama, Gede Made Dedy Pratama, and unscrupulous notary Ketut Nuridja as a suspect. According to the lawyer of Sarja, Zulfikar Ramly, Wednesday (Nov 26), the results of recheck to Bali Police and the Bali Prosecutor’s Office, determination of the suspect was based on the Warrant of Investigation Commencement (SPDP) noted in the log book numbering 232. SEMARAPURA - Police authority seized the subsidized fuel supplied to the archipelago of Lembongan, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, Monday (Nov 25). The confiscation was done to prevent fuel hoarding after the price hike. However, the action of police reaped strong protest from residents of Lembongan. Without the fuel supply sold at retail stalls, they automatically got difficulties to do activity in the tourist area. A local resident, Ketut Arjaya, revealed on Tuesday (Nov 26) that the confiscation had broad impact on people’s activity in Lembongan. They were very difficult to obtain fuel. All small stalls commonly provided fuel in retail ranging from Ceningan to Lembongan Island were suddenly closed. “If the confiscation continues, please give us solution where we should find fuel,” he said. He also doubted the reason of police to confiscate due to the allegation of hoarding in Lembongan. All this time, there had never been such an action in Lembongan. If the fuel supply to Lembongan was terminated, then the local economy would obviously get disturbed. A legislator of Klungkung House, Made Jana, when contacted on Wednesday (Nov 26) admitted that he had heard about the public outcry. The people’s representative from Nusa Penida electoral district said the Regent of Klungkung Nyoman Suwirta immediately held a closed meeting with him and Klungkung Police in the office of Regent Suwirta. The meeting could draw some conclusions. Among others, those who had recommendation of selling fuel were allowed to continue their business to maintain the economic viability of Lembongan and surrounding communities. Secondly, all stalls serving the sale of fuel in bottle were also allowed to run their business. Meanwhile, the legal process of people showing off an indication of having committed violation, namely hoarding and selling subsidized fuel to the unauthorized, should be resumed. In addition, responding to this issue, then on November 29, a meeting would be held among the Klungkung Police, Regent of Klungkung and the parties getting involved in the sale of fuel in Lembongan. In the meeting, police authority through the Chief of Klungkung Police, Ni Wayan Sri Yudatni Wirawati, confirmed if the raid conducted by county police and the staff was meant to protect small community from the fuel sales at a high price. After the meeting, she hoped the atmosphere on Lembongan Island, Jungut Stone and Ceningan Island could immediately come back to normal. The Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, appreciated the measure of police authority to prevent the attempts of fuel hoarding after the price hike. However, on the other hand, he also had to think about the impact on the lives of local people. To address the needs of subsidized fuel on Lembongan Island and Ceningan Island, the meeting last Wednesday adequately gave a solution to meet the fuel needs of Lembongan Island. FERGUSON, Missouri — Residents sought a return to normal Thursday as business owners boarded up windows and cleared away debris following unrest over a grand jury decision’s not to indict a white police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black 18-year-old. Protesters continued to hold scattered demonstrations, including a group that rushed into City Hall in St. Louis, the city neighboring Ferguson, Wednesday screaming “Shame, shame.” Police locked down the building and called in more than a hundred extra officers. Three people were arrested. About 200 demonstrators marched through downtown St. Louis and held a mock trial of Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown during an Aug. 9 struggle. The racially charged case has stoked passions nationwide, triggering debates over the relationship between black communities and law enforcement. Since the grand jury’s decision was announced Monday night, protesters in cities throughout the country have rallied behind the refrain “hands up, don’t shoot,” and drawn attention to other police killings. In New York City on Wednesday, Brown’s parents joined the families of two other black men who were unarmed when they died at the hands of police. The families joined arms with civil rights leader Al Sharpton and prayed for justice at the Harlem headquarters of Sharpton’s organization, the National Action Network. As the tension in Ferguson eased somewhat, Wilson broke his long public silence, insisting on national television that he could not have done anything differently in the Aug. 9 confrontation. The officer testified during the grand jury hearings that he felt threatened and that Brown tried to grab his gun, something the Brown family has said they don’t believe. An influx of guardsmen — reserve troops that state governors can call up during emergencies — helped make Tuesday night much calmer, although there still were 58 arrests, and demonstrators in Ferguson set fire to a squad car and broke windows at City Hall.

Many residents hoped that the relative calm of the daylight hours would last through the night and into Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday. Hours after nightfall, a few dozen protesters lingered outside the Ferguson Police Department, shouting at National Guard troops as light snow fell. But there were no serious confrontations and a much smaller police presence. town, where Guardsmen were stationed every few feet and some looked down from rooftops. The death of Deandre Joshua is being investigated as a homicide, but police have not said whether it’s connected to the violence that broke out after the grand jury announcement. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Witherspoon goes on a soul-baring ride in ‘Wild’

NEW YORK — Once she’d decided to take on her gritty new role in “Wild,” there were a few things Reese Witherspoon knew she didn’t want to hear from movie studio executives: “We want her to be more likable.” “We don’t want her to use drugs.” “We don’t want her to be profane.” And so, Witherspoon says, she didn’t give them the chance. She developed the film, which follows a hardliving woman’s path to solace and redemption via a long trek in the wilderness, outside the studio system under the auspices of her own production company, with private financing. “And then I took it to the studios and said, ‘I’m not changing a word,’” Witherspoon recounts in an interview. “And I had three bids on it that day.” “And I think it’s important, you know?” the actress adds. “You grow up, you change — I’m a 38-year old woman now, I have three kids, and I’ve lived a lot of life experience. It’s really important to me that the things I put out into the world are meaningful and thoughtprovoking. Otherwise, what am I doing?” “Wild,” based on the best-selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed, is a story of personal catharsis, and listening to Witherspoon, one gets the sense she was seeking a sort of professional catharsis by choosing it. The role, which has garnered significant Oscar buzz, includes difficult scenes depicting rough sex and heroin use. Witherspoon wore no makeup and spent days lugging a heavy backpack up and

down hills. “By far, it’s the hardest thing I’ve done in my life,” she says. “The physical aspects were really challenging — the elements, the heat, the cold, the water, the rain, 55 locations in 35 days, and carrying that backpack. And there was nothing else to cut to — just me.” Emotionally, it was even harder, she says: “One day I’d be getting divorced. Another, my mother would be dying. The next day I’d be using heroin. It was just nonstop — not even a roller coaster, just a continual descent downward! There are always scenes that I dread, that I say, ‘That day’s going to be miserable.’ And here, it was three weeks of that.” Witherspoon’s director, Jean-Marc Vallee, calls the actress “a trouper.” As well he should: He noticed that the backpack looked too light and forced her to carry a much heavier one. “And then he just walked away, and I was like, OK ...” Witherspoon laughs. “You can see it digging into my skin. Because it really WAS digging into my skin!” Vallee says Witherspoon “went out there with no makeup, looking like nothing, on the trail for 65 percent of the film, looking like a hiker, with a heavy backpack on her back. I removed the mirrors in the makeup trailer and she didn’t look at herself. “ Witherspoon, who already has one Oscar on the mantelpiece for 2005’s “Walk the Line,” says it was no accident that she chose such a film at this point in her career, a time that finds her veering away from trademark s u n n y, b r i g h t roles and romantic comedies. (Her 2012 supporting role in the Mississippi River coming-ofage tale “Mud” is another example of her new direction. “Wild,” which opens in select theaters Dec. 3, was an easy choice.

NEW YORK - One Direction has dethroned Taylor Swift to top US album sales charts, but the British boy band’s debut was far less spectacular, figures showed Wednesday. One Direction’s fourth album -- called, simply, “Four” -- sold 387,000 copies in the United States in the week through Sunday, ending a three-week run by Taylor Swift’s “1989” at the head of the Billboard 200 chart, Nielsen SoundScan said. But the debut week for One Direction was far more modest than that for “1989” which sold nearly 1.3 million albums

If the tourism sector increased, the economy of community would also increase. However, the tourism sector might not be lethal to other sectors, such as the agricultural sector such as in the matter of rampant land conversion.
