JAKARTA — Rescue teams searched for survivors Sunday after a busy bridge collapsed in central Indonesia, sending a bus, cars and motorcycles crashing into the river below. Four people were killed and scores more were missing. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the country’s disaster management agency, said the sprawling concrete bridge on the remote island of Borneo was being repaired when Saturday’s accident occurred.
Workers were tightening screws and bolts when a steel support cable snapped and the bridge, which was less than 10 years old, came smashing down. Four bodies were pulled from the Mahakam river, including a
6-month-old baby, and 19 people were rushed to the hospital with injuries, said police Capt. SyaďŹ i Nafsikin. Many people — including six of the repair workers — were missing. The 770-yard (700-meter) structure — built to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco — linked the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda in East Kalimantan province. Syaiful, a witness, told local television station TVOne that he
saw at least one bus and a dozen motorcycles plunge into the river. Several cars were badly mangled. “Everyone was screaming,� said Syaiful, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. “Survivors were swimming to the shore in panic.� President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ordered government ministers to the scene to oversee search-and-rescue operations. He also called for a full investigation into the cause of the collapse.

aged all countries to use alternative substances that had the lower potential of contributing to global warming by phasing out or eliminating the use of such chemical as HCFC. The declaration also called on all countries to make a further study on the use of the alternative
substances from the standpoint of technical, economic, health and safety aspects. It also called on developed countries to provide ďŹ nancial and technical assistance including transfer of technology to countries trying to switch to the alternative substances.

PAI should have vacated all farm activities. The letter was received by PT PAI on September 27. Meanwhile, the Head of Tabanan Environment Agency, Nyoman Subagiartha, stated that technically the waste disposed by PT PAI clearly damaged to the environment. Even, the company did not show off a cooperative effort to improve its sewage system. “The farm has been advised not to operate again. A record of light verdict to drug case was broken in the Denpasar 'LVWULFW &RXUW )ULGD\ 1RY As previously assumed by various parties, the number of interventions against the Aussie boy case, the defendant LM, 14, was proved after being requested to be sentenced to three months jail. At the session with the verdict agenda, LM was sentenced to two months imprisonment. From various sources, such a light verdict never occurred before in the Denpasar District Court, even in Bali. Next week the convict would be immediately free. In the Law No. 35/2009 concerning with Narcotics it is not explained clearly about the age restrictions. However, weakness of the legislation stating about the article of user in the direction of punishment in the form of rehabilitation made the verdict to LM carrying 3.6 gram of cannabis a record broken with a variety of justifications. The trial took place last Friday around 10:00 a.m. Local Time. The trial usually taking place in a closed child courtroom on the second floor of the Denpasar District Court was finally held open. It was done so because dozens of reporters dominated by Australian journalists pushed to get in. At first, the single judge, Amzer Simanjuntak, said the trial was declared closed. In response to such conditions, the judge ultimately provided the opportunity for the press to cover the trial openly in the courtroom. However, the bodyguards tightly escorting LM and parents continued to hinder journalists from taking a picture. It
was performed unsympathetically, and tended to be rough. In the trial, the judge Amzer Simanjuntak had the same argumentation as the public prosecutor I Gusti Putu Atmaja. His legal considerations were not much different from the charges filed in the previous trial. In the consideration of verdict was mentioned that the act of LM had proved to satisfy the elements set forth in the Article 127 paragraph 1a of the Law No. 35/2009 concerning with Narcotics. By considering the testimony of witnesses and evidences, the evidence of case was correctly belonging to the first class narcotics and was not accompanied with permission from a doctor or the authorities. On that account, the act the defendant was proved to have abused the narcotics for self-interest. The judge also considered the pleadings filed by LM’s lawyer, Muhammad Rifan, asking the judge to use the Article 128 of the Law No. 35/2009 concerning with Narcotics to ensnare his client. However, in the consideration of the judge it was set aside. According to the judge, if forced to use the Article 128 of Law No. 35/2009, as an addict he was not old enough to be returned to his parents if set to undergo rehabilitation, and then it would become ambiguous as LM had undergone the process of detention. Meanwhile, no rehabilitation center in Indonesia was appropriate to accommodate the Australian teenager. The judge concluded that he would be better imprisoned and came out soon, so he could be returned to his parents sooner. As mentioned, the incriminating consideration was that his actions
gave a negative image to Bali as a tourist destination. Meanwhile, the relieving considerations were that LM was never convicted, admitted and regretted his actions, was still very young, had a certificate of rehabilitation under the Australian Consulate, as well as parents were still able to handle and said they would rehabilitate their child. Therefore, sentencing was considered appropriate and fair. Prosecutor I Gusti Putu Atmaja when met after the trial stated if he was still thinking about the verdict. �There is a week to think about it. However, the verdict has been in conformity with the two-thirds of the charge,� said Atmaja. Meanwhile, M. Rifan said although LM was sentenced to two months and the article used was not in accordance with his pleadings, he could not ascertain whether he would appeal or not. “We’re still thinking about it,� he said. After knocking his gavel, the judge Amzer had made a press conference. It will possibly reach 17 percent in 2012,� he said. Meanwhile, a representative of the Center for the Agricultural Social Economy and Policy, Prajogo U. Hadi, said that theoretically the amount of beef consumption was influenced at least by three economic factors, namely income of consumers, price of beef itself and the price of substitute goods. “Consumption starts to be done by residents having the income of IDR 150,000 or more,� he said. On (national) average, the rela-
tionship between consumption and income follows the pattern in the urban areas. As implication, the delivery of beef cattle would be more directed to urban areas for consumption. “In urban areas, consumption of processed meat for extra-domestic needs like food stall or fast food restaurants such as in the form of rendang (meat shimmered in spices and coconut milk), empal (spiced and fried chunks of beef), soup and meatballs either done by individual or by families had become increasingly popular,� he said. He further said that so far the average beef consumption in Indonesia was still very low due to low purchasing power to the proceeds of farm commodities and the lack of community’s knowledge on the importance of animal protein for health. Industrial and handicraft exhibition in connection with the 518th Anniversary of Tabanan City held in the Mario Cultural Hall seemed to draw a few visitors. It was evident from the lack of visitors coming to the venue whereas the exhibition had been opened since Monday (Nov 21). Such deserted condition was justified by a number of booth owners. They admitted the number of visitors to the exhibition remained far from their expectations. Within a day, the number of visitor did not show an increase. “If there are only few visitors coming, automatically we lack of buyers, too,� complained one of the traders, Friday (Nov 25). Such a complaint was truly proved. Observation of Bali Post at location in the afternoon, each open booth did not look to be crowded by many visitors. Even, it seemed very quiet. Ironically, some booths preferred to close and others were not kept by the attendants as seen in the booth selling household goods. Apart from minimal visitors, some of the booths were also seen empty or uninhabited by their attendants. It was unknown why the booths were not occupied. To enliven the exhibition, reportedly the ranks of civil servants in the regency government would be deployed to visit the exhibition venue. Less splendor of the exhibition had been complained by the Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti. Even, she immediately ordered her staff to make a big event during the exhibition, including by adding lighting facilities on site because she considered it less adequate. The regent also urged all her men to go down and enliven the people’s exhibition. “I also feel less steady as it looks not lively,� she said. Entering the rainy season later this year, the gayas beetle attacked various plants owned by the community of Tembok Village and other villages in Tejakula Subdistrict. During this time government only provided the assistance of kerosene lamp to tackle the gayas beetle, but the results were still not optimal. A number of farmers at Tembok Village, Friday (Nov 25), said that gayas beetle recently attacked more cassava plants. However, other crops such as sweet potatoes and peanuts were not free from the attack, either. The attack of gayas beetle indeed always repeated and farmers seemed to have no appropriate solution to cope with the attack. Mentioned, the regency government actually had provided assistance in the form of kerosene lamp as a tool for tackling the gayas pests. Countermeasure by kerosene lamp posed a traditional control. The lamp was installed along with other devices, then the gayas would come and they would be destroyed together. “However, the growth of gayas seems faster than the extermination efforts undertaken by farmers,� said one of the farmers. A legislator of Buleleng House from Tembok Village, Dewa Putu Cakra, said the gayas beetle at Tembok Village and other surrounding villages always occurred when entering the rainy season. The pests spread rapidly and often gobbled down the entire crops of farmers. “Lately, local people started to love to plant cassava because there is enough demand for the ingredient of chips and other snacks. Unfortunately, the cassava planted by farmers is now attacked by gayas,� he said. He hoped that government could devise a way to cope with gayas beetle at the Tembok area and other villages in Tejakula Subdistrict. Extermination by kerosene lamp and trap devices was considered not optimal and even mostly failed. “This pest has always come every year but was never able to be overcome,� he said. NPE

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Pakistan on Sunday buried 24 troops killed in a NATO cross-border air raid that has pushed a crisis in relations between the United States and a key ally in the war on terror toward rupture. The attack was the latest perceived provocation by the United States, starting with the secret raid which killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May, and the question is whether ties will break or whether the two sides will remain stuck in a bad marriage of convenience. KINSHASA, Congo — A police official in Congo says four bodies were recovered after clashes in the capital ahead of a critical national poll. Police inspector general Charles Bisengimana says four bodies were taken to a Kinshasa morgue on Sunday. He says opposition supporters attacked supporters of the president during Saturday’s clashes. He says the situation is calm throughout the country Sunday. Saturday’s violence prompted officials to ban rallies before Monday’s poll. Human rights groups had expressed fears about an atmosphere of spiraling violence and hate speech ahead of the vote. The outcome of the vote is almost certain to keep President Joseph Kabila in power.
CAIRO - Presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei has offered to lead a government of national unity, raising the pressure on Egypt’s ruling generals amid protests demanding an immediate end to army rule. Activists are calling on citizens to converge again in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Sunday, a day before the start of a parliamentary election overshadowed by political turmoil and the threat of violence. The interim government led by Essam Sharaf resigned last week as protests against army rule intensified in Cairo and other cities. The violence has left 42 people dead. Facing its worst crisis since it pushed President Hosni Mubarak from office during a popular uprising in February, the army has promised a speedier handover to civilians, offered a referendum on military rule and named a new prime minister. But demonstrators have rejected the military’s choice of a 78-year-old veteran of Egyptian poli-

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

China`s economy which was initially predicted to grow 9.0 percent had now been predicted to go down to around 8.0 percent. “With the declining growth the world`s demand would also decrease so that exports would drop.
This is what is to also be felt in Indonesia,” he said. Perry said if the crisis in Europe continued short-term foreign investors would withdraw their funds in the developing countries. “In the past two months some of them have already started withdrawing their funds from developing countries. BENGKULU - The Sumatran tiger population in Bengkulu Province is now estimated at only 40, a provincial nature conservation official said. “According to an estimation by an endangered animal protection organization, the population of the Sumatran tiger in Bengkulu is around 40,” Head of the Bengkulu Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Amon Zamora said here on Thursday. The big cats were to be found in North Bengkulu, Seluma, Kepahiang, Muko-Muko, Lebong, Kaur and other districts, he said. In 2011, at least two Bengkulu residents were killed by tigers respectively in Seluma and Lebong Districts. The latest incident was when Fitriani (6) was found dead with tiger bite wounds in her thigh at her village of Tebot Mono, Kepahiang District. In tiger vs human being conflicts occurring in the districts of Lebong, Bengkulu Utara, Seluma and Muko-Muko respectively, four people were seriously injured. “Over the past few years, the number of human-tiger conflict cases in Bengkulu has increased. The wild Sumatran tiger population is estimated at fewer than 400 individuals.

The dialogue was expected to result in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in law enforcement, public awareness, human resources capacity building, training and coordination between the two parties. Vietnam was considered to be a country often used by animal and plant smugglers as a stepping stone to ply their contraband in countries such as China. For example, in every Indonesian anteater meat smuggling operation, the meat is auctioned off in Vietnam and given approval labels to be legally circulated in other countries, said Darori.

Even if the costs for some raw materials decline, companies are still expected to continue to raise prices during this holiday shopping season. He said he was confident a buyer would be found, although “nothing is a certain- t y . ” The auction house said it had been forced to remove a brief clip of the video from its website before the online auction after Jackson’s record label made a “copyright claim.” The fact that a successful buyer may not be able to use the film for commercial purposes may have dampened demand given the hefty asking price, but the spokesman played down the copyright dispute. “I don’t think that was a problem at all,” he said, adding that any serious potential buyer would be fully aware of the issue. Nearly two hours long, the footage was shot by Jackson’s own production crew and meant to be an intimate portrait of Jackson on tour. But the singer was unhappy with the quality and gave the only copy to his driver, who was
now trying to sell the footage, the auction house said. It was made during Jackson’s “Dangerous” tour in 1993 at a stop in Argentina. A DVD of the “Dangerous” concert tour, filmed in Bucharest, was released in 2005 and is still available on Amazon.com and other retailers for about $12. Items related to Jackson have skyrocketed in value since his death in 2009. The red and black leather jacket he wore for his 1983 “Thriller” video sold for $1.8 million in Los Angeles in June.

CHICAGO — A preliminary exam shows that an endangered baby gorilla born nine days ago at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo died of head trauma. Zoo workers discovered the baby gorilla was dead Friday morning, as she was being carried around by her mother. The zoo says workers allowed the mother, 16-yearold Bana, to keep the baby for several hours “to make peace with what happened.” She was a first-time mother. The cause of death was determined later in the day during a necropsy, the animal version of an autopsy. The baby’s father was a 22-year-old silverback gorilla named Kwan. The baby was the first Western lowland gorilla born at the zoo since 2005. She had not been named. In a statement, the zoo says the baby appeared to be fully developed.
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Conservationists in St. Maarten are warning islanders not to eat lionfish after tests found a naturally occurring toxin in the flesh of the candy-striped invasive species, officials said Thursday. The findings have dealt a blow to the tiny Dutch territory’s efforts to contain the spread of the venomous predator, a native of the Indian and Pacific oceans that has colonized large swaths of the region after a few apparently escaped a Florida fish tank in 1992. Following the lead of other Caribbean islands, St. Maarten had hoped to promote the species as batterfried or grilled delectables to slow their spread. They were found in the Dutch territory’s waters in July 2010 and have been multiplying and gobbling up native fish and crustaceans ever since. Lionfish were first detected in the Bahamas in 2004 and rapidly spread south into the warm waters of the Caribbean. But Tadzio Bervoets, chief of St. Maarten’s Nature Foundation, said nearly half of the football-sized lionfish captured in local waters were found to have a biotoxin that can lead to ciguatera poisoning, a rarely fatal but growing menace that has long been known in the Caribbean, South Pacific, and warmer areas of the Indian Ocean. Ciguatera poisoning is caused by eating some subtropical and tropical fish predators, including grouper, snapper and barracuda, which live by reefs and accumulate toxins through their diet. They accumulate the toxin in their flesh from eating smaller fish that graze on poisonous algae. People who have eaten infected fish can experience
abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tingling and numbness. Most patients recover in a few days. In rare, worst cases there is paralysis and even death. No one has gotten sick from eating lionfish in St. Maarten, but the territory typically has more than a dozen cases of ciguatera poisoning each year from people eating barracuda and jacks. St. Maarten’s waters have long suffered from high levels of ciguatoxin, so Bervoets said the test results on lionfish were not a complete surprise. Nonetheless, he added that island officials “were very much hoping that the results were negative.”

Lewis Hamilton believes the rain will give him a good chance to get a good result in the Brazilian Grand Prix after a disappointing qualifying. The Briton will start from fourth position, behind Jenson Button, and he conceded he was not happy with his showing after failing to match his McLaren team-mate’s pace. “A little bit disappointing, really,” said Hamilton. “We are still on the second row but of course we would love to be higher up. “My performance I’m not too happy about in the sense that I wasn’t quick enough. I’m a couple of tenths off Jenson, so clearly the car can be a little
bit quicker, but the Red Bulls were just massively quick today.” Hamilton said qualifying was a “bit of a struggle” for him, but he reckons the predicted rain will give him a good opportunity to recover in the race tomorrow. “It was okay. It was a bit of a struggle
really in the car. Just struggled to pull any more time out of the lap. Still we are on the second row, which is not a bad position to start from. “I’ve started from fourth a lot of the times here. Let’s hope tomorrow is wet, so we wait and see. Randy de Puniet and Aleix Espargaro join Aspar ASPAR has signed Randy de Puniet and Aleix Espargaro for its 2012 MotoGP line-up, when it will run Aprilia-powered CRT bikes. Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez’s ultra-successful lower-category team has used customer Ducatis for the first two years of its MotoGP programme, but is switching to the new lower-technology Claiming Rule Teams class for next season. De Puniet has been in MotoGP since 2006, initially with the factory Kawasaki team, then LCR Honda, before a single season with Pramac Ducati this year. He tested for Suzuki this winter just before it withdrew its works team from MotoGP. “I am delighted to return to the Aspar team, a team I raced with in 2005 in 250cc,” said de Puniet. “I have very fond memories of that time. Together we will embark on a new challenge, CRT. “CRT is the future of MotoGP and I think there will be a lot of work ahead, but very rewarding work. The goal
for the next season will be to adapt as quickly as possible to the prototype, and gradually catch the frontrunners.” The 30-year-old Frenchman has already tested the CRT bike, and though he acknowledged that it was currently some way off the standard MotoGP machines, he is optimistic. “Testing in Jerez was productive and I was able to get a lot of information about the bike,” de Puniet said. “It’s clear that we are still far from what the final motorcycle will be, but I’m very happy with how everything has happened. “The test in Jerez gave me the opportunity to realise the enormous potential of the new concept of CRT,and I am proud to be one of the pioneering riders in this new category.” De Puniet’s team-mate Espargaro will be returning to MotoGP after a year back in Moto2, having contested a season and a half with Pramac in 2009/10.
