HOLLYWOOD - Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was defaced by a vandal wielding a sledgehammer and a pick-axe on Wednesday in an act captured on video, police said. Los Angeles police expect to arrest someone for the vandalism, which left Trump’s name scratched out of the star, the emblem in the middle dislodged and chips missing. A video posted at Deadline. com, a Hollywood media industry website, showed a man wearing a hard-hat and reflective vest swinging a sledgehammer and pick-axe in the pre-dawn darkness. The area had been cordoned off with traffic barriers and cones, giving it the appearance of a legitimate work site. The Republican presidential nominee, real estate developer and reality TV star has faced several large protests during his campaign appearances in California, where polls show him far behind Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Formulating tourism reinforcement synergy with agriculture AGRICULTURE and tourism are in fact interrelated though in practice agriculure is often not given its due attention. In the name of developing tourism, agriculture is even marginalized. Also the absorption of Balinese agricultural products into the tourism market is far less than optimal.
There has been a lot of talk about how this two sectors of the economy can work together, icluding many ideas put forth during a focus group discussion at Warung Bali Blobal Shankara Sanur recently. It is clear that the futur of these two sectors are mutually dependant and
agrotourism is one way to bring them together, allowing Bali’S agricultural products to be made available to the tourism sector. However, farmers do not necessarily know which agricultural products are needed by tourism businesses. Also, consistent quality and ability to supply products continuousl are also factors that need to be addressed. “In Bali, we have agricultural products that could be
very absorbed into the tourism market. For example, the ingredients requred by hotel restaurants, cafes and bars are almost all available in Bali”, ssaid Gede Wira from the Bali’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). He added that Kadin Bali strives to bring together the seven components needed for cooperation between tourism and agriculture – namely: the legislative assembly, universities and R & D, agribusiness owners and the agro-industry, farmers, non-governmental organizations, mass media as well as the executives assembly. Demolition of Badung Market
Two heavy equipment and 27 workers involved
BADUNG Market has become the icon of traditional market in Bali. The building of this market has been renovated for several times. The records of PD Pasar Denpasar mentioned that a massive renovation was carried out in 1981 by using the funds of presidential instruction. The use of such fund is set forth in the presidential instruction No. 8/1981. Then, the market was inaugurated on April 24, 1984 by the Minister of the Home Affairs, Soepardjo Roestam. The building located on the land area of 6,230 square meters with the building area of 8,016 square meters has undergone fire incident for few times. At least, this market got fire incident in 2000, 2007 and February 29, 2016. The last fire was the most severe undergone by the market. This incident eventually inspired the Denpasar municipality to undertake redevelopment of the market, but with the same function, namely traditional market. After going through a long process, in early October the winner of the building demolition was already designated. Auction committee has determined H. Nur from Surabaya as the winning bidder. The employer living on Jalan Tambak Dalam Utama 49 Surabaya dared to buy the used building of Badung Market at IDR 670 million from the lowest price limit set at IDR 88 million. H. Nur could defeat 32 other participants. “We are accustomed to dismantling large buildings like this, whether they are hotels, markets or the other large buildings. Other than in Denpasar, we
had just finished demolishing a large building in Bondowoso,” said H. Nur, Wednesday (Oct. 26). When met while taking a break, H. Nur dared to put the highest bid because of seeing the building is quite spacious. In addition, the age of the building is pretty old. He assumed the iron used must be the big ones. “Based on this estimation, we dare to bargain over IDR 600 million,” he said. Currently, he has deployed two heavy equipment and 27 workers to complete the building demolition. The government of Denpasar targeted the building should have been razed to the ground on December 15, 2016. He mentioned that the building materials will be sold back to a metal factory in Surabaya. From the sale of the iron, he expected to get the results. The other materials are usually delivered for free, such as the flakes of the walls. “If there are people buying it, we are so grateful. Now, they have to be relocated to the land of the ex-Tiara Grosir while waiting for completion of the construction. In terms of the commodity on sale, first floor is used by the merchants of canang oblation, flowers, fruits, vegetables and assorted cakes (front and center), fish, poultry, eggs and meat (rear). Second floor holds the merchants of rice, beans or groceries. Then, the third floor (front and center) holds the merchants of fabric, worship attires and ritual paraphernalia as well as in the south (rear) is occupied by merchants of food and drinks. Then, the fourth floor is specially allocated for management activities of PD Pasar Denpasar including ballroom, limited meeting, personal secretary, director, general affairs, finance, engineering, supervision, sanitation and landscaping, cooperatives, Badung Market head unit and toilet. PLN Bali provides electicity to Pengotan village, Bangli
BANGLI - PT PLN (Persero) Distribusi Bali inaugurated the rural electrical connections located at Pengotan village, Wednesday (Oct. 26). As one of Bali’s traditional villages, the people of Pengotan rely on crops and livestock to earn their living. The introdctin of a rural electrical connection to this region is expected to help stimulate economic growth in Pengotan village. A number of natural tourist attractions are also strating to be developed in this area indicating a potential for their economy to do better. The inauguration of the electrical connection was attended by Development Division Head of the PLN Regional for East Java and Bali, Paranai Suhasfan and Regent of Bangli Made Gianyar. “One of the missions of the PLN is to make electricity an economic driver. The entry of electricity into Pengotan village is expected to drive the local economy” said Paranai Suhasfan. PLN Distribusi Bali invested IDR 646 million in the electrical connection at Pengotan village. Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, welcomed the hard work of the PLN in providing electricity to Pengotan village which of course has implications for the improvement of the economy of this village. The PLN allocated IDR 7.6 billion for their rural electrification program in the district of Bangli. Through the inauguration of this connection to electricity, synergy between the government and the PLN can continue to run well in terms of jointly overseeing the development in Bali.
In 2016, PLN Distribusi Bali invested about IDR 54 billion for the construction of rural electricity lines throughout Bali. In the region of East Bali, PLN Bali invested IDR 17 billion for their rural electricity program, constructing 30.38 km of medium voltage networks, 96.851 km of low voltage network and 22 additional substations spread throughout East Bali covering Klungkung, Bangli and Karangasem. Undeniably, electricity is a driving force of economic development for the area so the providing of electricity requires cooperation between the PLN and the local government. The rural electricity development program is meant to increase the electrification ratio of the Province of Bali. As of September 2016 it is recorded to be at 91.24 percent, while for Bangli they aim to reach 78.26 percent in 2016. Other than inaugurating rural electrical connections in Bangli the PLN Distribusi Bali has also handed out its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds through PLN Cares in the form of scholarships and empowerment training for of tilapia farmers. In 2016, the PLN Distribusi Bali has already distributed a total of IDR 875 million of CSR funds in East Bali covering Klungkung, Karangasem, Gianyar and Bangli utilized for the siphoning of water in Nusa Penida, organic and non-organic waste management, seaweed farmer group empowerment, greening, scholarships and the maintenance of the infrastructure of sanctums. MANGUPURA - Security guard officers of Ngurah Rai Airport secured an Australian traveler with the initials VR, Wednesday (Oct. 26). It happened because VR, 64, brought five bullets of caliber 22 and six bullets of caliber 23 alleged to have not been accompanied with formal document. Furthermore, the perpetrator was secured at the airport police station. As field information, as usual, every passenger made check- in first. At that time this traveler was suspected of carrying suspicious objects. Furthermore, VR was searched, including his bag. As a result, the officers found dozens
of bullets. VR was secured at the SCP I of international departure at 11:30. He is a passenger with flight destination to Sri Lanka. “When asked about the license by the airport security, the perpetrator claimed to have no license of it. The perpetrator is directly secured and handed over to airport police. He can be charged with Emergency Law No. 12/1951,” said the source. Farmers frustrated by bad weather BANGLI - Farmers at Serokadan, Abuan village, Susut, are frustrated following the declining in their rice harvest yields caused by the impact of bad weather and the general water crisis of late. Local farmer, I Kadek Budiarta, explained that on his 1,500 sqaure meters of land, he typically produced 20 sacks of rice, but now can only yield 10 sacks. Because of weather conditions. “Right when our paddy plants were starting to bear fruit, they were hoit by bad weather that resulted in slow grown and many fruits never flourished in grains”, he said on Tuesday (Oct. 25). He went on to explain that the water crisis also signinficantly affects harvest yields. Head of the Susut Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, I Wayan Arimbawa, dadimiteed that this year has seen some bad weather, but he added that nto all subak groups have been been affected. “Subak groups plant at different times, so some bore fruit when the weatehr was unfavorable, while other subak groups had quite good yields”, he explained. Acting Head of the Bangli Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, Ni Wayan Manik, expressed similar opinions to Arimbawa. Bad weather can potentially result in a negative impact on the growth of horticultural plants, including leass than maximal yields. Farmers have therfoe been asked to give more attention to maintenance patterns “Farmers also need to be careful in addressing the issue of bad weather. Maintenance must be carried out in a better way”, said Manik accompanied by Division Head of Food and Horticulture, I Wayan Sujana Tagel. He added that this season ther is a quite high potential for pest attacks. Farmers need to take preventive measures early on such as by doing mass extermination. “Do not wait for athe attacks to be severe, exterminatin must be doen early on”, he added. (kmb45)
Clay brick makers are indeed facing fierce competition amid the mushrooming of concrete brick producers. Most housing developers currently preffer concrete bricks to clay bricks in for the building of walls. However clay brick makers in some areas are managing to survive despite the ever increasing difficutly in obtaining the raw materials needed to make them. Clay brick makers in Meranggi hamlet, Bandung Pandak, Kediri like Wayan Sukanaja for example is still running his business successfully. Although the income that Sukanaja generates from this side job that he has been doing since junior high school, is not great, it has allowed hom to survive. He believes that where will never be a shortage of buyers: “There is a quite high demand for the constructino of villas or for the compund walls for shrines, but mostly these bricks are used in the construcitn of provate
homes”, he explained. According to Sukanaja, in order to survive in the clay brick-making business, one needs to have a astrong will and determination. He is lucky in that he obtains the raw material for the bricks in the area close to his own private land but added that sometimes they have to buy clay from elasewhere. Sukanaja has not faced any major obstacles in obtaining the raw clay for the bricks but is finding it harder and harder to find rice husks used for the clay mold and combustion process. “I there is not rice harvest, the rice milling business cannto supply husks”, he explained. He did not find any significant obstacle in terms of clay raw material. However, his current obstacle is the difficulty to get husks used for the mixture of the clay mold and combustion process. “If there is no harvest, the rice milling businesses cannot supply husks,” he said.
Sometimes the raw clay bricks sit waiting for up to a month for the arrival of the rice husks. Also brick making depends on the weather. “Indeed, we have to be extra patient. Sometimes we can only produce 5,000 pieces a month that sold for IDR 1,200 a piece. We usually sell our product through wholesalers,” he said. Headman of Pandak Bandung, I Nengah Sulendra, said that the village experienced clay brick production heyday between in 1993 to 1998. But the availability of high waulity clay have diminished over time. A number of residents have siwthced professions to become construction workers or casual labourers. “During its heyday, almost all heads of the 55 families in Meranggi and the 60 heads of family in Mamundeh actively produced bricks. Currently only about 25 people are still active” he said. In the future, more efforts wil be put into promoting village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) through craft cottage industries such as the making of shredded pork and ritual paraphernalia or jejahitan. One of the activities promoted is the making of aromatic incense and woven palm leaf craft. Now, the making of incense formerly carried out manually has begun to develop and can be done with three machines. Through hard work of local community leaders, most beggars are finally willing to follow the training initiated by the Bakti Laksana Foundation in cooperation with West Tianyar village. Approximately 100 beggars attend the training. After seeing the results, the beggars are increasingly serious to follow the training so as to improve the capacity and output. In order to encourage banks to finance farmers, BI could intervene by offering 20 percent loan distibutions in 2018. Karana added that the distribution of loans depends on the creativity of individual banks. Painting with inspiration to keep sea of Pemuteran village
SINGARAJA - Children from Pemuteran Village, Gerokgak recently created simple but attractive paitings of the sea and coral reefs as part of the Buleleng Bali Dive Festival (BBDF) 2016. Several children including 13 year old Gede Narayan, Komang Yudi (13), and Adi Angga Yogi (10) added the words “My ancestors were sialors – not backfillers of the sea” on their paintings of coral. Gede Narayana explained that he and hs brothers were inspired to create these simple paiting from heir own experiences. “We create our paitings for the BBDF from our imagination about the sea. I really like diving and snorkelling so this hobby became the inspiratoin for my painting of the coral of Pemutran”, siad Narayan on Tuesday (Oct 25). Although Nrayana likes to draw he got help from his brother to fill in the colors. “It takes great mastery to find the right combination of colors to create a beautiful painting”, explained

MANILA - Philippine and U.S. military officials will meet late next month and decide the fate of decades-old joint exercises, defence sources said on Wednesday, amid doubts over the future of the security alliance and a stream of mixed messages from Manila. The meeting, an annual gettogether to plan events for the year ahead, could bring some clarity to a Philippine position muddied by President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncements about ending an alliance that he says has little value, contrary to the opinions of some military commanders. “The meeting was supposedly on October 24, but it was moved to November 24 because they (Philippine military) wanted it after the U.S. elections,” said a Philippine army general, who did not want to be identified as he was not autho-

BUSINESS British economy defies fears of immediate Brexit growth hit
LONDON - Britain’s economic growth slowed only slightly in the three months after the Brexit vote, official data showed on Thursday defying warnings of a heavy hit and further diminishing the likelihood of the Bank of England cutting rates next week. The economy grew by 0.5 percent in the July-September period, less rapid than the unusually strong growth of 0.7 percent seen in the second quarter but comfortably above a median forecast of 0.3 percent in a Reuters poll of economists. “There is little evidence of a pronounced effect in the immediate aftermath of the vote,” Office for National Statistics Chief Economist Joe Grice said, adding growth was in line with the pattern since 2015. Britain’s dominant services industries provided all the growth, helped by a boom in the film and television sector as the latest releases in the Jason Bourne and Star Trek series hit the screens along with other blockbusters. Sterling jumped to a one-week high against the U.S. dollar after the data and the yield on 10-year government bonds hit its highest level since the European Union membership referendum as investors discounted the chance of a BoE rate cut on Nov. 3. Compared with the third quarter of last year, growth picked up to 2.3 percent, the strongest pace in more than a year, according to the preliminary figures from the ONS. Indonesian woman gets 20 years for poisoned-coffee murder
JAKARTA - An Indonesian court jailed a woman for 20 years on Thursday for murdering her college friend by poisoning her coffee, ending a dramatic case that gripped the country for months. Jessica Kumala Wongso, 27, an Indonesian citizen and permanent resident of Australia, remained expressionless while hearing the verdict and sentence. “The defendant has been proven guilty of premeditated murder,” presiding judge Kisworo said to applause from a packed courtroom without suggesting a motive. “...The murder was vile and sadistic because the defendant did it to her own friend.” Wongso told
the three-judge panel she thought the verdict was “unfair and onesided”. Defence lawyers said she would appeal. The two women had been meeting at a cafe in a central Jakarta mall when victim Wayan Mirna Salihin took a sip of a cyanide-laced drink, collapsed on the floor and went into convulsions, according to prosecutors. She died by the time she arrived at hospital. Dozens of police were posi-
tioned around the Central Jakarta courtroom as crowds scrambled to get in to hear the verdict. The trial had heard testimony from a string of forensic and psychological experts and the case has generated headlines since Wongso was arrested earlier this year. President Joko Widodo’s administration waded into the case, saying Wongso would not be executed if she got the death penalty, according to media. The deal was made with Australia in order for Australian police to assist in the investigation. Australia does not have the death sentence and opposes its use in other countries.(rtr)

Retno was scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the IORA secretary general and counterparts from several countries here on Thursday, on the sidelines of the IORA conference. But her bilateral meetings had to be cancelled due to the obituary. Retno had planned to hold a banquet with the delegates from India, Comoros, Bangladesh, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Somalia. However, the ministerial level meeting of IORA on Thursday will still proceed and will be chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Abdurrahman M. Fachir instead of Retno. Over 250 delegates from 21 countries will participate in the meetings, which comprise the 3rd Ad-hoc Committee Meeting on the IORA Concord on October 22 and 23, the 16th Meeting of the Working Group on Trade and Investment on October 24 and the 18th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials on October 25 and 26. The 16th Ministerial Meeting of IORA is expected to produce a Bali Communique, reiterating the commitment of the Indian Ocean Rim countries to strengthen the synergy and consultations for regional stability. They will also discuss an IORA Concord, which is expected to be approved in an IORA Summit in March 2017. Solo sailor Guo missing in the Pacific Ocean BEIJING - Chinese sailor Guo Chuan has gone missing in the Pacific during his attempt to set a record for a solo non-stop crossing of the ocean, state media has reported. “Guo was last heard just after 15:00 Tuesday Beijing time (0700 GMT) when his trimaran sailed 900 nautical miles off the west of Hawaii,” the 51-year-old’s support team was quoted as saying by the Xinhua news agency. “A search aircraft, sent from Honolulu, found the main sail in water, broken off the vessel, but didn’t see Guo on the deck. All attempts to contact the sailor have failed.” The U.S. Navy had sent two ships to the site of Guo’s vessel, his team added. Guo, who set sail from San Francisco on Oct. 19, was aiming to complete his journey to Shanghai in 18 days. Italian Giovanni Soldini owns the speed record after completing the voyage in 21 days in 2015. Guo already has two records to his name, having set the pace to beat in the 40-ft solo nonstop circumnavigation in 2013 and the Arctic Ocean Northeast Passage non-stop mark in 2015. “We have been working hard for the past two weeks to refit the boat and finally today I am going to set sail,” Guo said prior to setting sail from San Francisco. “I am very confident to go now. MADRID — The Spanish soccer federation on Wednesday fined Valencia 1,500 euros ($1,600) after water bottles were thrown at Barcelona players celebrating a goal in a Spanish league gamelast weekend. Solo sailor Guo missing in the Pacific Ocean BEIJING - Chinese sailor Guo Chuan has gone missing in the Pacific during his attempt to set a record for a solo non-stop crossing of the ocean, state media has reported. “Guo was last heard just after 15:00 Tuesday Beijing time (0700 GMT) when his trimaran sailed 900 nautical miles off the west of Hawaii,” the 51-year-old’s support team was quoted as saying by the Xinhua news agency. “A search aircraft, sent from Honolulu, found the main sail in water, broken off the vessel, but didn’t see Guo on the deck. All attempts to contact the sailor have failed.” The U.S. Navy had sent two ships to the site of Guo’s vessel, his team added. Guo, who set sail from San Francisco on Oct. 19, was aiming to complete his journey to Shanghai in 18 days. Italian Giovanni Soldini owns the speed record after completing the voyage in 21 days in 2015. Guo already has two records to his name, having set the pace to beat in the 40-ft solo nonstop circumnavigation in 2013 and the Arctic Ocean Northeast Passage non-stop mark in 2015. “We have been working hard for the past two weeks to refit the boat and finally today I am going to set sail,” Guo said prior to setting sail from San Francisco. “I am very confident to go now. CAMPI - Daylight revealed widespread damage in central Italy on Thursday after strong earthquakes overnight that caused panic and fear among residents just two months after a quake nearby killed hundreds. BUSINESS British economy defies fears of immediate Brexit growth hit
LONDON - Britain’s economic growth slowed only slightly in the three months after the Brexit vote, official data showed on Thursday defying warnings of a heavy hit and further diminishing the likelihood of the Bank of England cutting rates next week. The economy grew by 0.5 percent in the July-September period, less rapid than the unusually strong growth of 0.7 percent seen in the second quarter but comfortably above a median forecast of 0.3 percent in a Reuters poll of economists. “There is little evidence of a pronounced effect in the immediate aftermath of the vote,” Office for National Statistics Chief Economist Joe Grice said, adding growth was in line with the pattern since 2015. Britain’s dominant services industries provided all the growth, helped by a boom in the film and television sector as the latest releases in the Jason Bourne and Star Trek series hit the screens along with other blockbusters. Sterling jumped to a one-week high against the U.S. dollar after the data and the yield on 10-year government bonds hit its highest level since the European Union membership referendum as investors discounted the chance of a BoE rate cut on Nov. 3. Compared with the third quarter of last year, growth picked up to 2.3 percent, the strongest pace in more than a year, according to the preliminary figures from the ONS. Brexit supporters said the figures backed their argument dur-

Indonesian woman gets 20 years for poisoned-coffee murder
JAKARTA - An Indonesian court jailed a woman for 20 years on Thursday for murdering her college friend by poisoning her coffee, ending a dramatic case that gripped the country for months. Jessica Kumala Wongso, 27, an Indonesian citizen and permanent resident of Australia, remained expressionless while hearing the verdict and sentence. “The defendant has been proven guilty of premeditated murder,” presiding judge Kisworo said to applause from a packed courtroom without suggesting a motive. “...The murder was vile and sadistic because the defendant did it to her own friend.” Wongso told
the three-judge panel she thought the verdict was “unfair and onesided”. Defence lawyers said she would appeal. The two women had been meeting at a cafe in a central Jakarta mall when victim Wayan Mirna Salihin took a sip of a cyanide-laced drink, collapsed on the floor and went into convulsions, according to prosecutors. She died by the time she arrived at hospital. Dozens of police were posi-
tioned around the Central Jakarta courtroom as crowds scrambled to get in to hear the verdict. The trial had heard testimony from a string of forensic and psychological experts and the case has generated headlines since Wongso was arrested earlier this year. President Joko Widodo’s administration waded into the case, saying Wongso would not be executed if she got the death penalty, according to media. The deal was made with Australia in order for Australian police to assist in the investigation. Australia does not have the death sentence and opposes its use in other countries.(rtr)

Rehabilitation center would not change them. They even would look for victims there,” Buwas said here. Buwas said he guarantees his proposed action (shooting to kill drug dealers) is not against the law and human rights. “The drug dealers are the ones who have violated human rights,” he said at a meeting with mass media leaders also attended by East Java police chief Insd.Gen. Anton Setiadji, East Java Vice Governor H Saifullah Yusuf, and regional military leaders. He said the statement of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) earlier that the country had been in the status of drug emergency, was above the law, adding the president has even declared war against drugs. He said he had prepared a special team, which would act firmly against drug dealers. “We are only waiting for standard weapons we have ordered and would be available in November,” he said. He said BNN already has 50 trained police dogs (K-9) specially for drug tracking. “We trained the 50 K-9 for six months . I was even asked by the president to go to the Netherlands to study how to train K-nine,” he said. Retno was scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the IORA secretary general and counterparts from several countries here on Thursday, on the sidelines of the IORA conference. But her bilateral meetings had to be cancelled due to the obituary. Retno had planned to hold a banquet with the delegates from India, Comoros, Bangladesh, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Somalia. However, the ministerial level meeting of IORA on Thursday will still proceed and will be chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Abdurrahman M. Fachir instead of Retno. Over 250 delegates from 21 countries will participate in the meetings, which comprise the 3rd Ad-hoc Committee Meeting on the IORA Concord on October 22 and 23, the 16th Meeting of the Working Group on Trade and Investment on October 24 and the 18th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials on October 25 and 26. The 16th Ministerial Meeting of IORA is expected to produce a Bali Communique, reiterating the commitment of the Indian Ocean Rim countries to strengthen the synergy and consultations for regional stability. They will also discuss an IORA Concord, which is expected to be approved in an IORA Summit in March 2017. One of the activities promoted is the making of aromatic incense and woven palm leaf craft. Now, the making of incense formerly carried out manually has begun to develop and can be done with three machines. Through hard work of local community leaders, most beggars are finally willing to follow the training initiated by the Bakti Laksana Foundation in cooperation with West Tianyar village. Approximately 100 beggars attend the training. After seeing the results, the beggars are increasingly serious to follow the training so as to improve the capacity and output. Headman of West Tianyar, Gede Agung Pasrisak Juliawan, said on Tuesday (Oct. 25) that the skills of producing aromatic incense will become a new door for Muntigunung residents to leave their begging habit. Moreover, this program will also be fully supported by the local government, banking institutions and cooperatives across Bali in the marketing aspect. For example, a cow needs at least six months before it can give birth, so farmers should not be charged interest during this period” he said adding that at present all loan schemes follow the same model – one that is not necessarily suitabel for farmers. In order to encourage banks to finance farmers, BI could intervene by offering 20 percent loan distibutions in 2018. Karana added that the distribution of loans depends on the creativity of individual banks. There is a lot of potential opportunity for banks to finance the agricultiral sector in Bali as the structure of the economic structure of this little island is based on agriculture. “It’s a big opportunity, but there is a gap in terms of legality and data management, therefor we are now collecting such data”, explained Karana. Painting with inspiration to keep sea of Pemuteran village
SINGARAJA - Children from Pemuteran Village, Gerokgak recently created simple but attractive paitings of the sea and coral reefs as part of the Buleleng Bali Dive Festival (BBDF) 2016. Several children including 13 year old Gede Narayan, Komang Yudi (13), and Adi Angga Yogi (10) added the words “My ancestors were sialors – not backfillers of the sea” on their paintings of coral. Gede Narayana explained that he and hs brothers were inspired to create these simple paiting from heir own experiences. “We create our paitings for the BBDF from our imagination about the sea. I really like diving and snorkelling so this hobby became the inspiratoin for my painting of the coral of Pemutran”, siad Narayan on Tuesday (Oct 25). Although Nrayana likes to draw he got help from his brother to fill in the colors. “It takes great mastery to find the right combination of colors to create a beautiful painting”, explained

MANILA - Philippine and U.S. military officials will meet late next month and decide the fate of decades-old joint exercises, defence sources said on Wednesday, amid doubts over the future of the security alliance and a stream of mixed messages from Manila. The meeting, an annual gettogether to plan events for the year ahead, could bring some clarity to a Philippine position muddied by President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncements about ending an alliance that he says has little value, contrary to the opinions of some military commanders. “The meeting was supposedly on October 24, but it was moved to November 24 because they (Philippine military) wanted it after the U.S. elections,” said a Philippine army general, who did not want to be identified as he was not autho-

Local farmer, I Kadek Budiarta, explained that on his 1,500 sqaure meters of land, he typically produced 20 sacks of rice, but now can only yield 10 sacks. Because of weather conditions. “Right when our paddy plants were starting to bear fruit, they were hoit by bad weather that resulted in slow grown and many fruits never flourished in grains”, he said on Tuesday (Oct. 25). He went on to explain that the water crisis also signinficantly affects harvest yields. Head of the Susut Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, I Wayan Arimbawa, dadimiteed that this year has seen some bad weather, but he added that nto all subak groups have been been affected. “Subak groups plant at different times, so some bore fruit when the weatehr was unfavorable, while other subak groups had quite good yields”, he explained. Acting Head of the Bangli Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, Ni Wayan Manik, expressed similar opinions to Arimbawa. Bad weather can potentially result in a negative impact on the growth of horticultural plants, including leass than maximal yields. Farmers have therfoe been asked to give more attention to maintenance patterns “Farmers also need to be careful in addressing the issue of bad weather. Maintenance must be carried out in a better way”, said Manik accompanied by Division Head of Food and Horticulture, I Wayan Sujana Tagel. He added that this season ther is a quite high potential for pest attacks. Farmers need to take preventive measures early on such as by doing mass extermination. “Do not wait for athe attacks to be severe, exterminatin must be doen early on”, he added. (kmb45)
Clay brick makers are indeed facing fierce competition amid the mushrooming of concrete brick producers. Most housing developers currently preffer concrete bricks to clay bricks in for the building of walls. However clay brick makers in some areas are managing to survive despite the ever increasing difficutly in obtaining the raw materials needed to make them. Clay brick makers in Meranggi hamlet, Bandung Pandak, Kediri like Wayan Sukanaja for example is still running his business successfully. Although the income that Sukanaja generates from this side job that he has been doing since junior high school, is not great, it has allowed hom to survive. He believes that where will never be a shortage of buyers: “There is a quite high demand for the constructino of villas or for the compund walls for shrines, but mostly these bricks are used in the construcitn of provate
homes”, he explained. According to Sukanaja, in order to survive in the clay brick-making business, one needs to have a astrong will and determination. He is lucky in that he obtains the raw material for the bricks in the area close to his own private land but added that sometimes they have to buy clay from elasewhere. Sukanaja has not faced any major obstacles in obtaining the raw clay for the bricks but is finding it harder and harder to find rice husks used for the clay mold and combustion process. “I there is not rice harvest, the rice milling business cannto supply husks”, he explained. He did not find any significant obstacle in terms of clay raw material. However, his current obstacle is the difficulty to get husks used for the mixture of the clay mold and combustion process. “If there is no harvest, the rice milling businesses cannot supply husks,” he said.
Sometimes the raw clay bricks sit waiting for up to a month for the arrival of the rice husks. Also brick making depends on the weather. “Indeed, we have to be extra patient. Sometimes we can only produce 5,000 pieces a month that sold for IDR 1,200 a piece. We usually sell our product through wholesalers,” he said. Headman of Pandak Bandung, I Nengah Sulendra, said that the village experienced clay brick production heyday between in 1993 to 1998. But the availability of high waulity clay have diminished over time. A number of residents have siwthced professions to become construction workers or casual labourers. “During its heyday, almost all heads of the 55 families in Meranggi and the 60 heads of family in Mamundeh actively produced bricks. Currently only about 25 people are still active” he said. In the future, more efforts wil be put into promoting village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) through craft cottage industries such as the making of shredded pork and ritual paraphernalia or jejahitan. Demolition of Badung Market

BADUNG Market has become the icon of traditional market in Bali. The building of this market has been renovated for several times. The records of PD Pasar Denpasar mentioned that a massive renovation was carried out in 1981 by using the funds of presidential instruction. The use of such fund is set forth in the presidential instruction No. 8/1981. Then, the market was inaugurated on April 24, 1984 by the Minister of the Home Affairs, Soepardjo Roestam. The building located on the land area of 6,230 square meters with the building area of 8,016 square meters has undergone fire incident for few times. At least, this market got fire incident in 2000, 2007 and February 29, 2016. The last fire was the most severe undergone by the market. This incident eventually inspired the Denpasar municipality to undertake redevelopment of the market, but with the same function, namely traditional market. After going through a long process, in early October the winner of the building demolition was already designated. Auction committee has determined H. Nur from Surabaya as the winning bidder. The employer living on Jalan Tambak Dalam Utama 49 Surabaya dared to buy the used building of Badung Market at IDR 670 million from the lowest price limit set at IDR 88 million. H. Nur could defeat 32 other participants. “We are accustomed to dismantling large buildings like this, whether they are hotels, markets or the other large buildings. Other than in Denpasar, we
had just finished demolishing a large building in Bondowoso,” said H. Nur, Wednesday (Oct. 26). When met while taking a break, H. Nur dared to put the highest bid because of seeing the building is quite spacious. In addition, the age of the building is pretty old. He assumed the iron used must be the big ones. “Based on this estimation, we dare to bargain over IDR 600 million,” he said. Currently, he has deployed two heavy equipment and 27 workers to complete the building demolition. The government of Denpasar targeted the building should have been razed to the ground on December 15, 2016. He mentioned that the building materials will be sold back to a metal factory in Surabaya. From the sale of the iron, he expected to get the results. The other materials are usually delivered for free, such as the flakes of the walls. “If there are people buying it, we are so grateful. In terms of the commodity on sale, first floor is used by the merchants of canang oblation, flowers, fruits, vegetables and assorted cakes (front and center), fish, poultry, eggs and meat (rear). Second floor holds the merchants of rice, beans or groceries. Then, the third floor (front and center) holds the merchants of fabric, worship attires and ritual paraphernalia as well as in the south (rear) is occupied by merchants of food and drinks. Then, the fourth floor is specially allocated for management activities of PD Pasar Denpasar including ballroom, limited meeting, personal secretary, director, general affairs, finance, engineering, supervision, sanitation and landscaping, cooperatives, Badung Market head unit and toilet. PLN Bali provides electicity to Pengotan village, Bangli
BANGLI - PT PLN (Persero) Distribusi Bali inaugurated the rural electrical connections located at Pengotan village, Wednesday (Oct. 26). As one of Bali’s traditional villages, the people of Pengotan rely on crops and livestock to earn their living. The introdctin of a rural electrical connection to this region is expected to help stimulate economic growth in Pengotan village. A number of natural tourist attractions are also strating to be developed in this area indicating a potential for their economy to do better. The inauguration of the electrical connection was attended by Development Division Head of the PLN Regional for East Java and Bali, Paranai Suhasfan and Regent of Bangli Made Gianyar. “One of the missions of the PLN is to make electricity an economic driver. The entry of electricity into Pengotan village is expected to drive the local economy” said Paranai Suhasfan. PLN Distribusi Bali invested IDR 646 million in the electrical connection at Pengotan village. Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, welcomed the hard work of the PLN in providing electricity to Pengotan village which of course has implications for the improvement of the economy of this village. The PLN allocated IDR 7.6 billion for their rural electrification program in the district of Bangli. Through the inauguration of this connection to electricity, synergy between the government and the PLN can continue to run well in terms of jointly overseeing the development in Bali.
In 2016, PLN Distribusi Bali invested about IDR 54 billion for the construction of rural electricity lines throughout Bali. In the region of East Bali, PLN Bali invested IDR 17 billion for their rural electricity program, constructing 30.38 km of medium voltage networks, 96.851 km of low voltage network and 22 additional substations spread throughout East Bali covering Klungkung, Bangli and Karangasem. Undeniably, electricity is a driving force of economic development for the area so the providing of electricity requires cooperation between the PLN and the local government. The rural electricity development program is meant to increase the electrification ratio of the Province of Bali. As of September 2016 it is recorded to be at 91.24 percent, while for Bangli they aim to reach 78.26 percent in 2016. Other than inaugurating rural electrical connections in Bangli the PLN Distribusi Bali has also handed out its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds through PLN Cares in the form of scholarships and empowerment training for of tilapia farmers. In 2016, the PLN Distribusi Bali has already distributed a total of IDR 875 million of CSR funds in East Bali covering Klungkung, Karangasem, Gianyar and Bangli utilized for the siphoning of water in Nusa Penida, organic and non-organic waste management, seaweed farmer group empowerment, greening, scholarships and the maintenance of the infrastructure of sanctums. It happened because VR, 64, brought five bullets of caliber 22 and six bullets of caliber 23 alleged to have not been accompanied with formal document. Furthermore, the perpetrator was secured at the airport police station. As field information, as usual, every passenger made check- in first. The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival returns with extraordinary stories, amplified
brave voices and global issues through the lens of literature and the arts. Bringing together
a diverse mix of Indonesian and international writers, speakers, thinkers, artists, advocates, commentators and activists, this year’s festival celebrates the theme “Tat Tyam Asi”, which is Balinese for “I am you, you are me”. This ideology connects diverse religious, ethnic, cultural and historical backgrounds to share common respect and understanding. The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is the major annual project of the not-for-profit foundation, the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati. It was first conceived of by Janet DeNeefe, co-founder of the Foundation, as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing.

HOLLYWOOD - Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was defaced by a vandal wielding a sledgehammer and a pick-axe on Wednesday in an act captured on video, police said. Los Angeles police expect to arrest someone for the vandalism, which left Trump’s name scratched out of the star, the emblem in the middle dislodged and chips missing. A video posted at Deadline. com, a Hollywood media industry website, showed a man wearing a hard-hat and reflective vest swinging a sledgehammer and pick-axe in the pre-dawn darkness. The area had been cordoned off with traffic barriers and cones, giving it the appearance of a legitimate work site. The Republican presidential nominee, real estate developer and reality TV star has faced several large protests during his campaign appearances in California, where polls show him far behind Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Formulating tourism reinforcement synergy with agriculture AGRICULTURE and tourism are in fact interrelated though in practice agriculure is often not given its due attention. In the name of developing tourism, agriculture is even marginalized. Also the absorption of Balinese agricultural products into the tourism market is far less than optimal.
There has been a lot of talk about how this two sectors of the economy can work together, icluding many ideas put forth during a focus group discussion at Warung Bali Blobal Shankara Sanur recently. It is clear that the futur of these two sectors are mutually dependant and
agrotourism is one way to bring them together, allowing Bali’S agricultural products to be made available to the tourism sector. However, farmers do not necessarily know which agricultural products are needed by tourism businesses. Also, consistent quality and ability to supply products continuousl are also factors that need to be addressed. “In Bali, we have agricultural products that could be
very absorbed into the tourism market. For example, the ingredients requred by hotel restaurants, cafes and bars are almost all available in Bali”, ssaid Gede Wira from the Bali’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). He added that Kadin Bali strives to bring together the seven components needed for cooperation between tourism and agriculture – namely: the legislative assembly, universities and R & D, agribusiness owners and the agro-industry, farmers, non-governmental organizations, mass media as well as the executives assembly.
