NEW YORK — Jay-Z — under pressure to drop a collaboration with luxury store Barneys New York after it was accused of racially profiling two black customers — said Saturday he’s being unfairly “demonized” for waiting to hear all of the facts. The rap mogul made his first statement about the controversy in a posting on his website. He has been criticized for remaining silent after two young black people said they were profiled by Barneys after they purchased expensive items from their Manhattan store. An online petition and Twitter messages from fans have been circulating, calling on the star to leave his upcoming partnership with Barneys for the holiday season, which will have the store selling items by top designers, inspired by Jay-Z, with some proceeds going to his charity. But Jay-Z — whose real name is Shawn Carter — defended himself, say-
ing he hasn’t spoken about it because he’s still trying to figure out what happened. “I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys,” the statement said. “Why am I being demonized ... for not speaking immediately?” The two Barneys customers, Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips, said this week they were detained by police after making expensive purchases. DENPASAR - So far, the economic growth of Bali has been dominantly driven by trade, hotel and restaurant as well as the sector of services and transportation. Unfortunately, the agricultural sector in Bali deeply involved by almost 80 percent of the population only plays the role averagely 19.28 percent in the annual economic growth. An agricultural expert, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, doubling as former Chairman of the Indonesia Farmers Union (HKTI) of Bali, said that he saw the potential of agriculture in the broad sense (agriculture, horticulture and food) in Bali was very large. Although so far the role of agriculture was not so high to sustain the economic growth, he was confident and optimistic that in years to come the sector becoming the backbone of Balinese people would play a tremendous role in
sustaining the economic growth in Bali, provided that the agricultural sector could be maximally cultivated and well managed. “We all know the agricultural land in Bali is actually far more extensive than that of tourism. When the agricultural sector empowerment has been undertaken like the improvement of agricultural technology and preservation of quality of agricultural products, the sector can certainly play a significant role in the economic growth,” he said.
He asserted that Bali essentially had a great potential to develop and improve the agricultural sector amid the high demand of tourism sector, especially hotels and restaurants, for agricultural products. Unfortunately, all this time the agricultural products of local farmers could not fully be absorbed in the tourism sector. “In the future, at least the agricultural products of local farmers in Bali can be distributed to tourism sector so that tourism can become a host at its own home. Aside from being capable of reducing the amount of agricultural imports from outside, at least this strategy can give value to the agricultural products in Bali,” he advised. He also highly regretted the condition of agricultural products after harvest. So far, the reality indicated if the agricultural products in harvest season sometimes had
no value. Abundant volume did not fully provide benefits for farmers because the price dropped. “Suppose that we make a processing unit for the agricultural products, the agricultural products in the harvest season will remain to have higher selling price and even can increase the regional revenue,” he said. Different opinion was given by an agricultural and plantation observer, IB Raka Wiryanata. According to him, tourism sector would continue to dominate the economy of Bali. It could happen because so far there had been no real action from the government to the agricultural sector, so the agriculture turned sluggish. He also considered the recent weakening of the agriculture in Bali was also caused by a number of factors including the decrease of farmland due to conversion into
various other purposes. “Have a look at Bali where it seems still very dependent on other regions such as in the provision of various agricultural commodities. It is recorded that 6070 percent of the market share in this region is filled in by agricultural commodities from outside Bali,” he revealed doubling as Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (APPSI) of Bali. If it continued to happen and any disruption happened to transportation from outside Bali impeding the delivery of agricultural commodities to Bali, it could be imagined that Bali would be paralyzed. Thus, revitalization of the agriculture would surely become strategic to be done related to increasing the economic structure and competitiveness of agricultural products in Bali. (kmb28)

After Galungan, passenger backflow booms Semarapura (Bali Post)—
After many residents of Nusa Penida were abuzz to come home in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan, similar activities were also seen when hundreds of Nusa Penida residents crossed from the Nusa Penida to Bali Island. After Galungan, the backflow passengers were booming at a number of traditional harbors at Kusamba, Friday (Oct 25). An officer of the Klungkung Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency in charge of the Bias hamlet traditional harbor, Kusamba, Made Sedana Yoga, said on Friday that booming backflow had occurred after Galungan or Umanis Galungan. He said that such condition was estimated to occur until Sunday. The spectacle regularly happened to him during his designation at the traditional harbor. Fortunately, the flood of passengers happened under nice weather to do the crossing. As a result, the crossing activity was not disrupted by bad weather. Sedana Yoga said the surge in passengers had also been anticipated by preparing a number of outrigger boat so that it would be ready to cope with the increasing
number of passengers. As happened on Friday, an outrigger boat could cross back and forth up to five times. However, the boat could still serve the crossing well. “An outrigger boat can cross back and forth for five times. As long as the weather permits and passenger remains available, it’s no problem,” he said. Similar comment was also given by one of the vessel crews, Kadek Agus Suardana. He said that in order the outrigger boat could function optimally, it should be added with two outboard engines so that the crossing could take place faster and conveniently for passengers. Additional two outboard engines made his boat have totally four outboard engines and it was then quite effective for his boat
to do the crossing. As a result, the boat could cross up to five times. The addition of 400 PK engine, he said, could be done if the weather was nice during the crossing. Setting up additional engine during bad weather was not allowed because it seemed to have been forced and would be very dangerous for passengers. Increasing number of passengers had lead to stop the transportation of freight because almost all boats were focused on transporting passengers. Transportation of freight was back to normal on Friday. He hoped the weather on Sunday and onwards would be good so the crossing could also run smoothly. The hazard of pedophiles or adult disorder who likes to have sex with children is very worrying. Pedophiles target innocent children of desolate villages and even tourists come to people’s house like a god of savior. However, behind the lure of money, gift of cellular phone and other gifts, a hazard lurks those children. Related to that concern, Anak Bangsa Foundation (LAB) Denpasar held a focus group discussion (FGD) at the hamlet hall of Padangsari, Tianyar Tengah village, Kubu, Karangasem, Friday afternoon (Oct 25). Meanwhile, at night it was continued with the performance of Dadong Rerod gig show. Essentially, the gig show troupe would like to convey the socializa-
tion on the hazards of child trafficking. In the socialization, the gig show conveyed the hazards of pedophilia, child trafficking and the need for children to be given their right to attend the nine-year education drew the attention of residents. Moreover, in conjunction with the Galungan celebration, local villagers and teenagers returned home and were still at the village. Temporary rendezvous of the children, parents and community leaders at the village was taken advantage by the LAB to convey information related to a variety of concerns and the hazards lurking the children at the barren and poor village. “Not all tourists are thoroughly sincere and helpful. Some of them are already suffering disorders such

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WB has made some substantial behind-the-scenes changes, bringing in new writers, new voiceover talent and, most significantly, a new development team. But fans of the earlier games, particularly 2011’s “Arkham City,” will be happy to discover that this new chapter retains much of their smooth gameplay. Without even digging into the main story line, it’s just flat-out
fun to spread Batman’s wings and soar around Gotham, breaking out the Batclaw whenever you want to climb to the top of the skyscraper. Even on Christmas Eve, there are gangs of miscreants roaming the streets, so there are plenty of opportunities to practice Batman’s acrobatic fisticuffs on lesser foes before taking on monsters like Killer Croc. Gotham’s interior spaces house more challenging set pieces that require a stealthier approach; instead of jumping into the fray, it’s wiser to hang from the rafters and pick off enemies one by one. Meanwhile, there are scores of “extortion files” hidden all over the city, many of which are blocked by head-scratching puzzles. And there are a handful of murder mysteries to solve using a clever mechanism that allows Bruce to digitally reconstruct crime scenes. It took me about 12 hours to conquer the game’s core campaign, but I could easily spend dozens more searching for everything “Origins” has to offer. The supervillains themselves serve up some genuinely satisfying boss battles that are much more imaginative than your ge-

WB’s Montreal studio has done an admirable job taking the reins from “Asylum” creator Rocksteady, proving there’s still life in the franchise. Next time, I’d like to see them take more risks. PARIS — Condemned apartments covered in spray paint have probably never been in such demand. An entire apartment tower in eastern Paris has been turned over to 105 street artists from around the world, giving them a chance to turn each home into its own art installation during the building’s final days. The artists had seven months to tag “Tour Paris 13” — named for the district where it’s located — coating apartments sometimes still filled with debris, trash and furniture. All their work will vanish by the end of the year, as the tower, which has nine stories and a basement, is demolished piece by piece after next week. “I really wanted the artist to intervene on a whole space,” said Mehdi Ben Cheikh, the gallery owner who
initiated the project. “I didn’t want the spectators to come and look at art. I wanted the spectators to come and enter an art work ... which means there are things everywhere — we enter a room, and have to turn around in every direction to understand the surroundings.” The result is a tower exhibiting a range of artistic styles. There’s a skull-inspired mural, Arabic calligraphy, a bloody bathroom, and a glow-in-the-dark cow crawling with snakes. Would-be visitors have lined up for up to eight hours for a one-hour visit, with signs at various points around the block estimating their wait time. Only 49 people are allowed in at one time in the apartment block, which overlooks the Seine. A handful of people are still living in the building and refusing to leave

DENPASAR - A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, said the growing tourism destination in Bali should contribute to the welfare of society existing in customary village. “At provincial level, there has been the assistance for customary villages in Bali. County or municipal government also needs to provide similar assistance for customary villages. Among others, it can be particularly obtained from the management of tourist attraction. It is expected to help the customary villages in the vicinity,” said Mangku Kandia. According to him, the government should provide a policy so that there was an income from the management of tourist attractions to customary village. Results of the admission levy collection at tourist attraction should be used for the welfare of customary villagers. “Many customary villagers in Bali remain at the poverty line. Through the development of tourist attraction, it is expected to help the prosperity of customary villagers in the surrounding areas,” he said. He argued that 30 percent of the revenue obtained from tourist attraction management should be used to help customary villages in the vicinity. Meanwhile, the remaining 70 percent was returned to county/ municipal government for the overall development financing, including the improvements of road infrastructure leading to the tourist attraction. “The assistance worth 30 percent

The Director General of KP3K, Dr. Irwandi Idris gave an appreciation to Tabanan coast, especially to the coastal conservation program as well as the fishermen. “Of hundreds of county and municipal governments in the country, they still rarely make a good coastal conservation program,” he said. Therefore, his party would motivate the development of coastal conservation area. Especially for Tabanan, he said, it could be included in the award nomination. Therefore, it would enable to get the assistance from central government to continue the coastal
conservation program. According to him, the coastal conservation was very important, especially for the survival of fishermen. For information, at the moment Bali depends on the three power plants namely the Pesanggaran diesel and gas power plant generating 251.50 MW, Pemaron gas power plant (215 MW) and Gilimanuk power plant (130 MW) as well as Java-Bali submarine interconnection cable (200 MW). So, the total power generated by PLN Bali amounts to 796.50 MW.

PRAGUE — A special parliamentary election held in the Czech Republic left no party with a majority on Saturday, which could lead to protracted negotiations aimed at forming a coalition government. The two-day election was called to end a political crisis triggered by the center-right government’s collapse in a whirlwind of allegations about corruption and marital infidelity. With all the votes counted by the Czech Statistics Office, the leftwing Social Democrats won 20.45 percent, or 50 seats, in the 200-seat lower house of Parliament. The party’s ally, the Communists, finished third, receiving 14.91 percent of the vote, or 33 seats. The Communists had hoped to give the Social Democrats their tacit support in a government that would give the Communists a share of the power for the first time since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which ended 40 years of communist rule in the country. “The result is not what we expected,” Bohuslav Sobotka, the chairman of the Social Democrats, said, referring to the worst elec-
tion result for his party since 1993, when Czechoslovakia split into two countries: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In the republic, Parliament’s lower house dominates the legislative process, and the leader of its strongest party is generally asked by the president to try to form a new government. But that is not expected to be easy this time, given the election result for the top seven parties of the 24 that competed in the election. She is suspected of bribery and ordering a military intelligence agency to spy on Necas’ then estranged wife. Necas has since divorced his wife, Radka, and married Nagyova. Necas’ conservative Civic Democrats party was clearly punished by voters, receiving just 7.72 percent of the vote, or 16 seats. “It’s a fatal loss,” said its acting chairman, Martin Kuba. The Head of the Jembrana Environment, Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (LHKP), Made Widana, when asked for his confirmation said that for the landscaping arrangement at the fishing pond his office indeed only received living plants. If some plants were dead, his party would ask the partner to replace and had recommended to maintain the plants by watering every afternoon. Budget of the arrangement for the fishing ground and palm trees, palm and so forth reached IDR 200 million. Meanwhile, the contractor handling the landscaping arrangement, Eka Yuliartini, claimed that her party would replace the dead trees. Her party claimed not to know for sure how many trees were dead. Tokyo - Japan’s leader warned China on Sunday against forcibly changing the regional balance of power, as reports said Tokyo had scrambled fighter jets in response to Chinese military aircraft flying near Okinawa. Verbal skirmishing between Asia’s two biggest economies, who dispute ownership of an island chain, escalated as Beijing warned Tokyo that any hostile action in the skies against Chinese drones would be construed as an “act of war”. “We will express our intention as a state not to tolerate a change in the status quo by force. We must conduct all sorts of activities such as surveillance and intelligence for that purpose,” Abe said in an address to the military. “The security environment surrounding Japan is becoming increasingly severe. This is the reality,” he said. “You will have to completely rid yourselves of the conventional notion that just the existence of a defence force could act as a deterrent.” Abe presided over an inspection of the military at which a US amphibious assault vehicle was displayed for the first time, an apparent sign of Japan’s intention to strengthen its ability to protect remote islands. The defence ministry plans to create a special amphibious unit to protect the southern islands and retake them in case of an invasion. “There are concerns that China is attempting to change the status quo by force, rather than by rule of law,” Abe earlier told the Wall Street Journal in an interview following a series of summits this month with regional leaders. “But if China opts to take that path, then
it won’t be able to emerge peacefully,” he said in the interview published Saturday. “So it shouldn’t take that path, and many nations expect Japan to strongly express that view. And they hope that as a result, China will take responsible action in the international community,” Abe added. On Sunday Jiji Press and Kyodo News reported that Japan had deployed jets for two days running in response to four Chinese military aircraft flying over international waters near the Okinawa island chain. Two Y8 early-warning aircraft and two H6 bombers flew from the East China Sea to the Pacific Ocean and back again but did not violate Japan’s airspace, the reports said. The Japanese defence ministry was not immediately available for confirmation. Japan’s military is on increased alert as Tokyo and Beijing pursue a war of words over the disputed islands in the East China Sea that lie between Okinawa and Taiwan. On Saturday China responded angrily after a report said Japan had drafted plans to shoot down foreign drones that encroach on its airspace if warnings to leave are ignored. Tokyo drew up the proposals after a Chinese military drone entered Japan’s air defence identification zone near the disputed islands in the East China Sea last month, Kyodo said. “We would advise relevant parties not to underestimate the Chinese military’s staunch resolve to safeguard China’s national territorial sovereignty,” China’s defence ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said in comments posted on the ministry’s website.

The Paris-based company, a world leader in electrical engineering said that currencies had depreciated sharply in markets where the company can make as much as a billion euros in sales. “We find ourselves overvalued in relation to many currencies, including the dollar, that’s very clear,” he said. Accordingly, the company said that organic sales growth would be stagnant instead of the moderate increase it had expected earlier. Carmaker Renault had a similar story as sales fell 3.2 percent, even though registration of its vehicles increased by the same amount during the quarter. Even US companies have been affected. At Coca-Cola, volumes increased by 3 percent but net revenue declined by 3 percent. Stripping out currency effects revenue would have increased by 4 percent in the quarter. Coca-Cola chief executive Muhtar Kent described the results as solid given “an ongoing challenged macroeconomic environment driven by increasing volatility across emerging markets.”

The euro has not only risen sharply against emerging market currencies, it has also reached its highest levels since 2011 against the dollar due to disappointing economic data from the United States and the prospect of more monetary stimulus. The likes of Sony and Toyota have seen huge gains since the start of the year as waves of overseas cash flooded into the long-lacklustre Tokyo market, nearly doubling the electronics giant’s stock while the world’s largest automaker jumped about 55 percent. The Nikkei 225 stock average -- a who’s who of corporate Japan -- has surged 36 percent since January, staging a sharp recovery as Tokyo’s policy blitz of government spending and monetary easing helped set off a
sharp decline in the yen. That has boosted profitability among Japanese exporters and investors are hoping for more as earnings season gets under way this week. But the multi-month surge on the Nikkei since late last year has stoked fears about overheating even as the index came off highs that saw it up about 80 percent at one stage. Small firms the next ‘gold mine’ Now, some are looking beyond members of the blue-chip index to the hundreds of other firms that populate the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), one of the world’s biggest equity markets. “At first, monetary easing helped boost prices of the biggest capitalisation shares... which made small-and mid-cap stocks relatively underval-

The entire waste disposal area had been filled with garbage of ritual paraphernalia. Even, some of them were spilling onto the edge of the road. Such phenomenon regularly happened after Galungan celebration. The rise in the volume of garbage was justified by the Head of Tabanan Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP), Gusti Ngurah Supanji. According to him, production of garbage since October 19 averagely reached more than double compared to normal days. “The rise reaches about 100 percent,” he said, Friday (Oct 25). Under normal condition, production of garbage in Tabanan reached 368 cubic meters. If doubled, the waste production of Galungan increased to 736 cubic meters per day. Actually, the number of personnel and dump trucks remained the same. The number of janitor in Tabanan reached 186 people. In daily operation, they were equipped with 12 units of dump truck and 27 units of arm roll truck. Berlin - US President Barack Obama was personally informed of mobile phone tapping against German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which may have begun as early as 2002, German media reported Sunday. Bild am Sonntag newspaper quoted US intelligence sources as saying that National Security Agency chief Keith Alexander had briefed Obama on the operation against Merkel in 2010. “Obama did not halt the operation but rather let it continue,” the newspaper quoted a high-ranking NSA official as saying. Meanwhile newsweekly Der Spiegel reported ahead of its Monday issue that leaked NSA documents showed Merkel’s phone had appeared on a list of spying targets since 2002, and was still under surveillance weeks before Obama visited Berlin in June.
The spying row has prompted European leaders to demand a new deal with Washington on intelligence gathering that would maintain an essential alliance while keeping the fight against terrorism on track. Germany will send its own spy chiefs to the United States next week to demand answers following the allegations that US intelligence has been tapping Merkel’s mobile phone, as the row threatened to fray transatlantic ties. Merkel confronted Obama with the suspicion in a phone call on Wednesday saying that spying on allies would be a “breach of trust” between international partners.
The charges also prompted Berlin to summon the US ambassador -- a highly unusual move between the close allies. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported Saturday that Obama had told Merkel during their call that he had been unaware of any spying against her. It did not cite its sources. Der Spiegel said he had told her that if he had been informed of the operation he would have stopped it at once. Other media reports said that Obama’s National Security Advisor Susan Rice had also told German officials the president knew nothing of the spying.
Baghdad - Nine car bombs killed at least 30 people Sunday in Shiite-majority areas of Baghdad province, while another targeting soldiers queuing at a bank in Mosul left a further 12 dead, officials said. The wave of attacks pushed the October death toll from violence across Iraq past 630. The Baghdad blasts, which hit eight different areas in and around the Iraqi capital, also wounded more than 90 people, the security and medical officials said. One of the worst-hit neighbourhoods was Shaab in north Baghdad, where two car bombs exploded in a commercial area, killing five people and wounding at least 17. Blasts also struck the areas of Bayaa, Baladiyat, Mashtal, Hurriyah and Dura in Baghdad, and Saba al-Bur and Nahrawan near the capital. The Mashtal blast hit a bus station while bombs in Bayaa, Dura and Saba al-Bur targeted commercial areas. Sunni militants often carry out attacks against members of Iraq’s Shiite majority, whom they consider apostates. Iraq has since last month restricted many Baghdad residents to using their cars only every other day, but the measure has failed to prevent dozens of vehicle bombs exploding in the capital. In the northern city of Mosul, a car bomb attack targeting soldiers waiting outside a bank to collect their wages killed at least 12 people on Sunday, military and medical officials said. Civilians were believed to be among those killed in the attack, which also left around 20 people wounded. It came shortly after a car bomb exploded near an army checkpoint in Mosul, killing a woman and wounding eight people, officials said. And gunmen shot dead two Shiite civilians in the Muqdadiyah area, northeast of the city of Baquba. Violence in Iraq has reached a level not seen since 2008, when the country was just emerging from a brutal sectarian conflict. The surge in bloodshed this year, which has included sectarian attacks, has raised fears Iraq may relapse into the intense Sunni-Shiite conflict that peaked in 2006-2007 and killed tens of thousands. Analysts say the situation has been aggravated by the Shiite-led government’s failure to address grievances of the Sunni Arab minority, which complains of political exclusion and abuses by security forces. The level of violence spiked after security forces stormed a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq in April, sparking clashes in which dozens died. The authorities have made some concessions aimed at placating the protesters and Sunnis in general, such as freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of Sunni anti-Al-Qaeda fighters, but the underlying issues remain unaddressed. More than 630 people have now been killed so far this month, and more than 5,300 since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources. A study released this month by academics based in the United States, Canada and Iraq said nearly half a million people have died from war-related causes in Iraq since the US-led invasion of 2003. In addition to major security problems, the Iraqi government has failed to provide adequate basic services such as electricity and clean water, and corruption is widespread. Political squabbling has paralysed the government, while parliament has passed almost no major legislation in years.

Archbishop of Semarang Mgr Johannes Pujasumarto confirmed Sumarya’s death saying “ I heard this morning about it from a relative in Jakarta. He and several other Jesuit fathers were taking part in the Jakarta Marathon to raise funds for the Mertoyudan seminary.” Father Sumarya was believed to
have died following a heart attack he suffered while participating in the marathon. He died on the way to a hospital. The Catholic priest’s body would be taken from the hospital and laid in peace at Kanisius Chapel in Menteng, Central Jakarta, where a requiem is scheduled to be held at 8pm on Sun-
day.He is later to be buried in the Jesuit cemetary in Girisontan, Central Java, on Tuesday. Before being the rector of Mertoyudan seminary Father Sumarya was head of the Kolese Kanisius senior high school in Jakarta from 2002 to 2011 and director of the Strada Association.

JAKARTA - Fed up with spending hours stuck in the gridlocked Indonesian capital Jakarta, hundreds of thousands of social media-savvy commuters are tweeting to beat the traffic. The threadbare public transport system in the capital of Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, combined with growing spending power, has spawned vast numbers of motorists who are increasingly turning to Twitter to conquer jams. Road users in Jakarta, the world’s most active city in terms of posted tweets, are using the microblogging service to warn fellow travellers of traffic-choked roads or arrange car pooling. Resorting to the web is an act of desperation for drivers in the megacity of 10 million, branded the world’s most unpleasant place to commute in a 2011 survey by consultancy Frost and Sullivan. Hendry Soelistyo was an early pioneer of online tools to tackle traffic in Jakarta, where commuters often spend up to five hours a day in a slow-moving sea of cars and motorbikes to get to work. Four years ago the IT entrepreneur set up lewatmana.com, a website and associated Twitter account through which commuters can share real-time information about traffic conditions. “Indonesians update their status on Facebook and Twitter all the time, so we thought, why not share information about traffic jams?” Soelistyo told AFP. Lewatmana, which means “via where” in Indonesian, mainly provides information about jams, but also flags up flooded roads or areas affected by the city’s frequent demonstrations. The platform relies on its users as well as 100 CCTV cameras installed in office windows across the city to monitor traffic and send out pictures via Twitter. The service, which fires out more than 14,000 tweets a month, has proved a hit and now has around 200,000 followers. Another attempt to solve Jakarta’s traffic woes through Twitter is a car-pooling community called Nebengers, which translates as “hitchhikers” and aims to reduce the number of vehicles in the city centre. “Nebengers is like a virtual car terminal, where we can hitch a ride to go to school or the office,” said founder Andreas Aditya Swasti, 27. It is rare to give lifts to strangers in Indonesia but Nebengers has still drawn around 4,000 Twitter followers, with more than 400 people using the service every day to either get or give a lift. People wishing to offer a seat in their car to others who share the same route put a message out two hours before the trip. Ratna Mayasari, who works in the city centre and offers free lifts from her house in South Jakarta, said it helps to share her one-and-a-half hour commute with others. “Before, I used to sing or even grumble at the traffic by myself, but now I have found friends to do that with me,” she said. With a dilapidated public transport system incapable of serving the city’s population and huge volumes of new cars and motorbikes hitting the streets every day, Jakarta needs all the help it can get when it comes to traffic management. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of motorbikes on the streets increased by 460 percent and the number of cars by 160 percent, according to the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The agency, a state-funded body that gives out Japanese government aid and advice, is helping Jakarta fix its traffic woes. Attempts by city authorities to reduce the number of vehicles, such as doubling the parking price, have largely proved ineffective. The latest initiative has seen officials deployed to let down the tyres of illegally parked cars and motorbikes. Public transport, which mostly consists of run-down buses belching toxic black smoke and overloaded trains and minibuses, has proved an unattractive option for a fast-growing middle class that can now afford cars. New mass transit projects -- which have been delayed for decades -- are slowly springing back to life, with ground-breaking ceremonies for both the city’s first subway and monorail taking place this month. But with several years before these are up and running, Jakarta’s tweeters could find themselves managing the city’s chaotic roads for some time yet. “Where else can you find citizens busying themselves with traffic management? Indonesia is probably the most active, because in other countries, it’s the government who is doing this stuff,” said Soelistyo.

MOTEGI - World champion Jorge Lorenzo won the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez on Sunday to ensure the MotoGP title race goes down to the final round of the season at Valencia next month. The Yamaha rider rode a brilliant race from pole position, holding off rookie Marquez for 22 laps at the Motegi Twin Ring track and frustrating his fellow Spaniard’s championship ambitions for the second week in a row. Honda rider Marquez still leads the championship by 13 points, however, and a fourth place finish in Spain on Nov. 10 would guarantee he becomes the youngest champion in the 64 years of the premier class of grand prix racing. The 20-year-old’s team mate Dani Pedrosa finished third, ending his slim hopes of winning the title, while Honda’s Alvaro Bautista ensured a Spanish sweep of the top four places. “This track is normally better for them so winning here in Honda’s home race... is a pleasure,” Lorenzo told reporters. “It’s been a really hard, physical race but I really kept my concentration and I really wanted this victory.” A first attempt to seal the title at Phillip Island in Australia last week ended with disqualification for Marquez after a mistake by his team and victory for Lorenzo. Marquez’s incident-packed debut season continued even on Sunday morning when he slid off his bike and careered across the
trackside gravel in the final practice session. Sebastian Vettel sealed his fourth consecutive Formula 1 World Championship crown with a dominant Indian Grand Prix victory. The Red Bull driver converted his pole position into the lead at the first corner at the Buddh circuit and was always effectively in front, even though his pit strategy painted a different picture during the opening phase of the race. Vettel started on Pirelli’s soft tyres and was the first man into the pits for medium rubber at the end of the second lap. Once Felipe Massa’s Ferrari and the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton had got rid of their softs, Vettel’s Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber was left in front while the German battled through the pack. A combination of passing moves and pitstops for others quickly moved Vettel up from 18th to fifth. Despite being in traffic, he cut an 18-second deficit to Webber to one of less than 11s by the time the Australian made his first stop on lap 28 of 60. By that point Vettel had passed Romain

JOHANNESBURG — New South African football president Danny Jordaan backs Sepp Blatter’s call for a rethink over the number of places given to African and Asian teams at the World Cup, saying they should be increased at the expense of Europe and South America. It’s “an important matter for debate,” Jordaan said on Saturday. Jordaan, the former 2010 World Cup head organizer who was elected to lead SAFA last month, called for a review following comments from Blatter in a new FIFA magazine this week that said Africa, especially, was “woefully” under-represented at the top tournament. “Developing economies should have a lot of say, which is why I am saying this matter must be fully researched and a proposal must be formulated,” Jordaan said. Blatter said African teams will struggle to win the World Cup because they are given so few places. There are five places at the World Cup for Africa compared to 13 for Europe. Repeating comments made by Blatter, Jordaan noted that traditional powers Europe and South America together will have up to 19 teams at next year’s World Cup in Brazil compared to a maximum of 10 from Africa and Asia, yet Europe and South America have far less FIFA member countries combined than the other two confederations. Blatter’s comments may be interpreted as an effort to widen his support base in Africa and Asia ahead of a possible plan to run again for the FIFA presidency despite saying that this would be his last term in charge of world football. African and Asian teams also have struggled to break through at the World Cup and a European or South American team has won every title in the 80-year history of the showpiece. Cameroon was the first African team to reach the World Cup quarterfinals in 1990 but since then only two others — Senegal in 2002 and Ghana three years ago — have got that far. South Korea is the only Asian team to reach the semifinals, making history at the tournament it co-hosted in 2002. Lorenzo’s Japan win keeps Marquez waiting Reuters
MOTEGI - World champion Jorge Lorenzo won the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of championship leader Marc Marquez on Sunday to ensure the MotoGP title race goes down to the final round of the season at Valencia next month. The Yamaha rider rode a brilliant race from pole position, holding off rookie Marquez for 22 laps at the Motegi Twin Ring track and frustrating his fellow Spaniard’s championship ambitions for the second week in a row. Honda rider Marquez still leads the championship by 13 points, however, and a fourth place finish in Spain on Nov. 10 would guarantee he becomes the youngest champion in the 64 years of the premier class of grand prix racing. The 20-year-old’s team mate Dani Pedrosa finished third, ending his slim hopes of winning the title, while Honda’s Alvaro Bautista ensured a Spanish sweep of the top four places. “This track is normally better for them so winning here in Honda’s home race... is a pleasure,” Lorenzo told reporters. “It’s been a really hard, physical race but I really kept my concentration and I really wanted this victory.” A first attempt to seal the title at Phillip Island in Australia last week ended with disqualification for Marquez after a mistake by his team and victory for Lorenzo. Marquez’s incident-packed debut season continued even on Sunday morning when he slid off his bike and careered across the
trackside gravel in the final practice session. ROSSI MISTAKE After fog and rain combined to wipe out the first day and a half of the weekend, though, the Honda-owned track was bone dry at the start of the penultimate race of the season. Lorenzo lined up with Marquez beside him but by the first corner two Yamahas led the race with Valentino Rossi’s excellent start putting him in second place. Any hopes that Rossi might obstruct the inevitable Honda charge were dashed on the second lap, though, when the seven-times world champion misjudged his braking and Marquez and Pedrosa swept past. Sebastian Vettel sealed his fourth consecutive Formula 1 World Championship crown with a dominant Indian Grand Prix victory. The Red Bull driver converted his pole position into the lead at the first corner at the Buddh circuit and was always effectively in front, even though his pit strategy painted a different picture during the opening phase of the race. Vettel started on Pirelli’s soft tyres and was the first man into the pits for medium rubber at the end of the second lap. Once Felipe Massa’s Ferrari and the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton had got rid of their softs, Vettel’s Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber was left in front while the German battled through the pack. A combination of passing moves and pitstops for others quickly moved Vettel up from 18th to fifth. Despite being in traffic, he cut an 18-second deficit to Webber to one of less than 11s by the time the Australian made his first stop on lap 28 of 60. By that point Vettel had passed Romain
Grosjean’s Lotus, Daniel Ricciardo’s Toro Rosso and Sergio Perez’s McLaren, meaning he retook the lead at this point. Berlin - US President Barack Obama was personally informed of mobile phone tapping against German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which may have begun as early as 2002, German media reported Sunday. Bild am Sonntag newspaper quoted US intelligence sources as saying that National Security Agency chief Keith Alexander had briefed Obama on the operation against Merkel in 2010. “Obama did not halt the operation but rather let it continue,” the newspaper quoted a high-ranking NSA official as saying. Meanwhile newsweekly Der Spiegel reported ahead of its Monday issue that leaked NSA documents showed Merkel’s phone had appeared on a list of spying targets since 2002, and was still under surveillance weeks before Obama visited Berlin in June.
The spying row has prompted European leaders to demand a new deal with Washington on intelligence gathering that would maintain an essential alliance while keeping the fight against terrorism on track. Germany will send its own spy chiefs to the United States next week to demand answers following the allegations that US intelligence has been tapping Merkel’s mobile phone, as the row threatened to fray transatlantic ties. Merkel confronted Obama with the suspicion in a phone call on Wednesday saying that spying on allies would be a “breach of trust” between international partners.
The charges also prompted Berlin to summon the US ambassador -- a highly unusual move between the close allies. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported Saturday that Obama had told Merkel during their call that he had been unaware of any spying against her. It did not cite its sources. Der Spiegel said he had told her that if he had been informed of the operation he would have stopped it at once. Other media reports said that Obama’s National Security Advisor Susan Rice had also told German officials the president knew nothing of the spying.
Baghdad - Nine car bombs killed at least 30 people Sunday in Shiite-majority areas of Baghdad province, while another targeting soldiers queuing at a bank in Mosul left a further 12 dead, officials said. The wave of attacks pushed the October death toll from violence across Iraq past 630. The Baghdad blasts, which hit eight different areas in and around the Iraqi capital, also wounded more than 90 people, the security and medical officials said. One of the worst-hit neighbourhoods was Shaab in north Baghdad, where two car bombs exploded in a commercial area, killing five people and wounding at least 17. Blasts also struck the areas of Bayaa, Baladiyat, Mashtal, Hurriyah and Dura in Baghdad, and Saba al-Bur and Nahrawan near the capital. The Mashtal blast hit a bus station while bombs in Bayaa, Dura and Saba al-Bur targeted commercial areas. Sunni militants often carry out attacks against members of Iraq’s Shiite majority, whom they consider apostates. Iraq has since last month restricted many Baghdad residents to using their cars only every other day, but the measure has failed to prevent dozens of vehicle bombs exploding in the capital. In the northern city of Mosul, a car bomb attack targeting soldiers waiting outside a bank to collect their wages killed at least 12 people on Sunday, military and medical officials said. Civilians were believed to be among those killed in the attack, which also left around 20 people wounded. It came shortly after a car bomb exploded near an army checkpoint in Mosul, killing a woman and wounding eight people, officials said. And gunmen shot dead two Shiite civilians in the Muqdadiyah area, northeast of the city of Baquba. Violence in Iraq has reached a level not seen since 2008, when the country was just emerging from a brutal sectarian conflict. The surge in bloodshed this year, which has included sectarian attacks, has raised fears Iraq may relapse into the intense Sunni-Shiite conflict that peaked in 2006-2007 and killed tens of thousands. Analysts say the situation has been aggravated by the Shiite-led government’s failure to address grievances of the Sunni Arab minority, which complains of political exclusion and abuses by security forces. The level of violence spiked after security forces stormed a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq in April, sparking clashes in which dozens died. The authorities have made some concessions aimed at placating the protesters and Sunnis in general, such as freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of Sunni anti-Al-Qaeda fighters, but the underlying issues remain unaddressed. More than 630 people have now been killed so far this month, and more than 5,300 since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources. A study released this month by academics based in the United States, Canada and Iraq said nearly half a million people have died from war-related causes in Iraq since the US-led invasion of 2003. In addition to major security problems, the Iraqi government has failed to provide adequate basic services such as electricity and clean water, and corruption is widespread. Political squabbling has paralysed the government, while parliament has passed almost no major legislation in years.

Archbishop of Semarang Mgr Johannes Pujasumarto confirmed Sumarya’s death saying “ I heard this morning about it from a relative in Jakarta. He and several other Jesuit fathers were taking part in the Jakarta Marathon to raise funds for the Mertoyudan seminary.” Father Sumarya was believed to
have died following a heart attack he suffered while participating in the marathon. He died on the way to a hospital. The Catholic priest’s body would be taken from the hospital and laid in peace at Kanisius Chapel in Menteng, Central Jakarta, where a requiem is scheduled to be held at 8pm on Sun-

JAKARTA - Fed up with spending hours stuck in the gridlocked Indonesian capital Jakarta, hundreds of thousands of social media-savvy commuters are tweeting to beat the traffic. The threadbare public transport system in the capital of Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, combined with growing spending power, has spawned vast numbers of motorists who are increasingly turning to Twitter to conquer jams. Road users in Jakarta, the world’s most active city in terms of posted tweets, are using the microblogging service to warn fellow travellers of traffic-choked roads or arrange car pooling. Resorting to the web is an act of desperation for drivers in the megacity of 10 million, branded the world’s most unpleasant place to commute in a 2011 survey by consultancy Frost and Sullivan. Hendry Soelistyo was an early pioneer of online tools to tackle traffic in Jakarta, where commuters often spend up to five hours a day in a slow-moving sea of cars and motorbikes to get to work. Four years ago the IT entrepreneur set up lewatmana.com, a website and associated Twitter account through which commuters can share real-time information about traffic conditions. “Indonesians update their status on Facebook and Twitter all the time, so we thought, why not share information about traffic jams?” Soelistyo told AFP. Lewatmana, which means “via where” in Indonesian, mainly provides information about jams, but also flags up flooded roads or areas affected by the city’s frequent demonstrations. The platform relies on its users as well as 100 CCTV cameras installed in office windows across the city to monitor traffic and send out pictures via Twitter. The service, which fires out more than 14,000 tweets a month, has proved a hit and now has around 200,000 followers. Another attempt to solve Jakarta’s traffic woes through Twitter is a car-pooling community called Nebengers, which translates as “hitchhikers” and aims to reduce the number of vehicles in the city centre. “Nebengers is like a virtual car terminal, where we can hitch a ride to go to school or the office,” said founder Andreas Aditya Swasti, 27. It is rare to give lifts to strangers in Indonesia but Nebengers has still drawn around 4,000 Twitter followers, with more than 400 people using the service every day to either get or give a lift. People wishing to offer a seat in their car to others who share the same route put a message out two hours before the trip. Ratna Mayasari, who works in the city centre and offers free lifts from her house in South Jakarta, said it helps to share her one-and-a-half hour commute with others. “Before, I used to sing or even grumble at the traffic by myself, but now I have found friends to do that with me,” she said. With a dilapidated public transport system incapable of serving the city’s population and huge volumes of new cars and motorbikes hitting the streets every day, Jakarta needs all the help it can get when it comes to traffic management. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of motorbikes on the streets increased by 460 percent and the number of cars by 160 percent, according to the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The agency, a state-funded body that gives out Japanese government aid and advice, is helping Jakarta fix its traffic woes. Attempts by city authorities to reduce the number of vehicles, such as doubling the parking price, have largely proved ineffective. The latest initiative has seen officials deployed to let down the tyres of illegally parked cars and motorbikes. Public transport, which mostly consists of run-down buses belching toxic black smoke and overloaded trains and minibuses, has proved an unattractive option for a fast-growing middle class that can now afford cars. New mass transit projects -- which have been delayed for decades -- are slowly springing back to life, with ground-breaking ceremonies for both the city’s first subway and monorail taking place this month. But with several years before these are up and running, Jakarta’s tweeters could find themselves managing the city’s chaotic roads for some time yet. “Where else can you find citizens busying themselves with traffic management? Indonesia is probably the most active, because in other countries, it’s the government who is doing this stuff,” said Soelistyo.

The Paris-based company, a world leader in electrical engineering said that currencies had depreciated sharply in markets where the company can make as much as a billion euros in sales. “We find ourselves overvalued in relation to many currencies, including the dollar, that’s very clear,” he said. Accordingly, the company said that organic sales growth would be stagnant instead of the moderate increase it had expected earlier. Carmaker Renault had a similar story as sales fell 3.2 percent, even though registration of its vehicles increased by the same amount during the quarter. Even US companies have been affected. At Coca-Cola, volumes increased by 3 percent but net revenue declined by 3 percent. Stripping out currency effects revenue would have increased by 4 percent in the quarter. Coca-Cola chief executive Muhtar Kent described the results as solid given “an ongoing challenged macroeconomic environment driven by increasing volatility across emerging markets.”

The euro has not only risen sharply against emerging market currencies, it has also reached its highest levels since 2011 against the dollar due to disappointing economic data from the United States and the prospect of more monetary stimulus. The likes of Sony and Toyota have seen huge gains since the start of the year as waves of overseas cash flooded into the long-lacklustre Tokyo market, nearly doubling the electronics giant’s stock while the world’s largest automaker jumped about 55 percent. The Nikkei 225 stock average -- a who’s who of corporate Japan -- has surged 36 percent since January, staging a sharp recovery as Tokyo’s policy blitz of government spending and monetary easing helped set off a
sharp decline in the yen. That has boosted profitability among Japanese exporters and investors are hoping for more as earnings season gets under way this week. But the multi-month surge on the Nikkei since late last year has stoked fears about overheating even as the index came off highs that saw it up about 80 percent at one stage. Small firms the next ‘gold mine’ Now, some are looking beyond members of the blue-chip index to the hundreds of other firms that populate the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), one of the world’s biggest equity markets. “At first, monetary easing helped boost prices of the biggest capitalisation shares... which made small-and mid-cap stocks relatively underval-

Piles of garbage could be seen almost throughout the temporary waste disposals. Similar condition was also seen on Jalan Raya Bakisan at Denbatas village. The entire waste disposal area had been filled with garbage of ritual paraphernalia. Even, some of them were spilling onto the edge of the road. Such phenomenon regularly happened after Galungan celebration. The rise in the volume of garbage was justified by the Head of Tabanan Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP), Gusti Ngurah Supanji. According to him, production of garbage since October 19 averagely reached more than double compared to normal days. “The rise reaches about 100 percent,” he said, Friday (Oct 25). Under normal condition, production of garbage in Tabanan reached 368 cubic meters. If doubled, the waste production of Galungan increased to 736 cubic meters per day. Actually, the number of personnel and dump trucks remained the same. The number of janitor in Tabanan reached 186 people. In daily operation, they were equipped with 12 units of dump truck and 27 units of arm roll truck. Nevertheless, his party remained overwhelmed to handle the garbage transportation. “We’ve added three working shifts through the night,” said Supanji. To accelerate the transportation, his party also boosted the officers in charge of the waste landfill at Mandung, Kerambitan. Bulldozer equipment was operated effectively so the garbage delivery from temporary disposal did not pile up at the landfill. The official hoped the garbage after Galungan could be immediately transported entirely. As targeted, up to next two days the entire garbage could have been transported. He said the technologies included satellites, photogrammetry, radar, space-based satellite navigation Global Positioning System (GPS) including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), LSU-02 and LSU-3 aircraft made by the National Aeronautics and Space Institute (Lapan), and Lapan A-2 satellite, which is to be launched in 2014.

The Director General of KP3K, Dr. Irwandi Idris gave an appreciation to Tabanan coast, especially to the coastal conservation program as well as the fishermen. “Of hundreds of county and municipal governments in the country, they still rarely make a good coastal conservation program,” he said. Therefore, his party would motivate the development of coastal conservation area. Especially for Tabanan, he said, it could be included in the award nomination. Therefore, it would enable to get the assistance from central government to continue the coastal
conservation program. According to him, the coastal conservation was very important, especially for the survival of fishermen. The Head of Tabanan Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Made Subagia, explained that his party had a number of programs for shoreline management whose length reached 34.34 km. There were also the management of coastal conservation, protection to potential coastal resources and strategic planning for coastal areas. “The most touching program made by the Tabanan government was to provide clean water for coastal
residents at very affordable price,” he said. Another policy was that local government had built coastal footpath. It enabled the coastal residents to enjoy the access to the beach. For information, at the moment Bali depends on the three power plants namely the Pesanggaran diesel and gas power plant generating 251.50 MW, Pemaron gas power plant (215 MW) and Gilimanuk power plant (130 MW) as well as Java-Bali submarine interconnection cable (200 MW). So, the total power generated by PLN Bali amounts to 796.50 MW.

With all the votes counted by the Czech Statistics Office, the leftwing Social Democrats won 20.45 percent, or 50 seats, in the 200-seat lower house of Parliament. The party’s ally, the Communists, finished third, receiving 14.91 percent of the vote, or 33 seats. The Communists had hoped to give the Social Democrats their tacit support in a government that would give the Communists a share of the power for the first time since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which ended 40 years of communist rule in the country. “The result is not what we expected,” Bohuslav Sobotka, the chairman of the Social Democrats, said, referring to the worst elec-
tion result for his party since 1993, when Czechoslovakia split into two countries: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Tokyo - Japan’s leader warned China on Sunday against forcibly changing the regional balance of power, as reports said Tokyo had scrambled fighter jets in response to Chinese military aircraft flying near Okinawa. Verbal skirmishing between Asia’s two biggest economies, who dispute ownership of an island chain, escalated as Beijing warned Tokyo that any hostile action in the skies against Chinese drones would be construed as an “act of war”. “We will express our intention as a state not to tolerate a change in the status quo by force. We must conduct all sorts of activities such as surveillance and intelligence for that purpose,” Abe said in an address to the military. “The security environment surrounding Japan is becoming increasingly severe. This is the reality,” he said. “You will have to completely rid yourselves of the conventional notion that just the existence of a defence force could act as a deterrent.” Abe presided over an inspection of the military at which a US amphibious assault vehicle was displayed for the first time, an apparent sign of Japan’s intention to strengthen its ability to protect remote islands. The defence ministry plans to create a special amphibious unit to protect the southern islands and retake them in case of an invasion. “There are concerns that China is attempting to change the status quo by force, rather than by rule of law,” Abe earlier told the Wall Street Journal in an interview following a series of summits this month with regional leaders. “But if China opts to take that path, then
it won’t be able to emerge peacefully,” he said in the interview published Saturday. “So it shouldn’t take that path, and many nations expect Japan to strongly express that view. On Sunday Jiji Press and Kyodo News reported that Japan had deployed jets for two days running in response to four Chinese military aircraft flying over international waters near the Okinawa island chain. Two Y8 early-warning aircraft and two H6 bombers flew from the East China Sea to the Pacific Ocean and back again but did not violate Japan’s airspace, the reports said. The Japanese defence ministry was not immediately available for confirmation. Japan’s military is on increased alert as Tokyo and Beijing pursue a war of words over the disputed islands in the East China Sea that lie between Okinawa and Taiwan. On Saturday China responded angrily after a report said Japan had drafted plans to shoot down foreign drones that encroach on its airspace if warnings to leave are ignored. Tokyo drew up the proposals after a Chinese military drone entered Japan’s air defence identification zone near the disputed islands in the East China Sea last month, Kyodo said. “We would advise relevant parties not to underestimate the Chinese military’s staunch resolve to safeguard China’s national territorial sovereignty,” China’s defence ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said in comments posted on the ministry’s website.

It’s Christmas Eve in Gotham City — not the merriest time to be Bruce Wayne. For one thing, he’s probably had enough of the “Jingle bells, Batman smells” carolers. This year, he’s having a particularly blue Christmas, for the nefarious crime boss Black Mask has put a $50 million bounty on his head. Perhaps Bruce should take Alfred’s advice and stay home roasting chestnuts? Not when he’s got a list and everyone on it is naughty. It’s a rogues gallery of DC Comics villains, from the familiar (The Penguin, Bane) to the ridiculous (Mad Hatter, Calendar Man). And yes, word has it there’s a pesky new troublemaker called The Joker on the streets. “Batman: Arkham Origins” (for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PC, $59.99) is the third installment in Warner Bros.’ Arkham series, a grim take on the character similar to Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” films. WB has made some substantial behind-the-scenes changes, bringing in new writers, new voiceover talent and, most significantly, a new development team. But fans of the earlier games, particularly 2011’s “Arkham City,” will be happy to discover that this new chapter retains much of their smooth gameplay. Without even digging into the main story line, it’s just flat-out
fun to spread Batman’s wings and soar around Gotham, breaking out the Batclaw whenever you want to climb to the top of the skyscraper. Even on Christmas Eve, there are gangs of miscreants roaming the streets, so there are plenty of opportunities to practice Batman’s acrobatic fisticuffs on lesser foes before taking on monsters like Killer Croc. Gotham’s interior spaces house more challenging set pieces that require a stealthier approach; instead of jumping into the fray, it’s wiser to hang from the rafters and pick off enemies one by one. Meanwhile, there are scores of “extortion files” hidden all over the city, many of which are blocked by head-scratching puzzles. And there are a handful of murder mysteries to solve using a clever mechanism that allows Bruce to digitally reconstruct crime scenes. It took me about 12 hours to conquer the game’s core campaign, but I could easily spend dozens more searching for everything “Origins” has to offer. The supervillains themselves serve up some genuinely satisfying boss battles that are much more imaginative than your ge-

WB’s Montreal studio has done an admirable job taking the reins from “Asylum” creator Rocksteady, proving there’s still life in the franchise. Next time, I’d like to see them take more risks. PARIS — Condemned apartments covered in spray paint have probably never been in such demand. An entire apartment tower in eastern Paris has been turned over to 105 street artists from around the world, giving them a chance to turn each home into its own art installation during the building’s final days. The artists had seven months to tag “Tour Paris 13” — named for the district where it’s located — coating apartments sometimes still filled with debris, trash and furniture. All their work will vanish by the end of the year, as the tower, which has nine stories and a basement, is demolished piece by piece after next week. “I really wanted the artist to intervene on a whole space,” said Mehdi Ben Cheikh, the gallery owner who
initiated the project. “I didn’t want the spectators to come and look at art. I wanted the spectators to come and enter an art work ... which means there are things everywhere — we enter a room, and have to turn around in every direction to understand the surroundings.” The result is a tower exhibiting a range of artistic styles. There’s a skull-inspired mural, Arabic calligraphy, a bloody bathroom, and a glow-in-the-dark cow crawling with snakes. Would-be visitors have lined up for up to eight hours for a one-hour visit, with signs at various points around the block estimating their wait time. Only 49 people are allowed in at one time in the apartment block, which overlooks the Seine. A handful of people are still living in the building and refusing to leave

DENPASAR - Thirty-seven Japanese artists are exhibiting their canvas paintings at Ksirarnawa building, Denpasar Cultural Parks, from October 25 to October 28, said an official with a tour agency. “There are 221 paintings on exhibit,” said the director of Impressions Tour, Wayan Suena. The painting exhibition is a means of cultural exchange between Japan
and Bali, he said. It is being held to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan, especially in the promotion of culture, he added. Apart from the paintings by Japanese artists, the exhibition’s organizing committee is also showcasing 20 paintings made by primary school students of Denpasar. Wayan expressed hope that the Japanese painting exhibition will attract foreign and domestic tourists.

DENPASAR - A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, said the growing tourism destination in Bali should contribute to the welfare of society existing in customary village. “At provincial level, there has been the assistance for customary villages in Bali. County or municipal government also needs to provide similar assistance for customary villages. Among others, it can be particularly obtained from the management of tourist attraction. It is expected to help the customary villages in the vicinity,” said Mangku Kandia. According to him, the government should provide a policy so that there was an income from the management of tourist attractions to customary village. Results of the admission levy collection at tourist attraction should be used for the welfare of customary villagers. “Many customary villagers in Bali remain at the poverty line. Through the development of tourist attraction, it is expected to help the prosperity of customary villagers in the surrounding areas,” he said. He argued that 30 percent of the revenue obtained from tourist attraction management should be used to help customary villages in the vicinity. Meanwhile, the remaining 70 percent was returned to county/ municipal government for the overall development financing, including the improvements of road infrastructure leading to the tourist attraction. “The assistance worth 30 percent
obtained from the management of tourist attraction will increase the economy of customary villagers and further reduce the customary villagers who are on the poverty line,” he said. Mangku Kandia also urged the tourism components or investors to develop tourism village because foreign tourists were more interested in enjoying the object. Development of rural tourism would have an impact on the local community since the development of rural tourism sector could directly empower the residents in enhancing their economy. “In other words, with the tourist arrival, local residents will directly enjoy and play the role as actor in the sector. For example, local resident can provide accommodation for tourists,” he explained. With the development of rural tourism, according to Mangku Kandia, nearly hundreds of hotels could be made and managed by local communities. “Even, many tourists that wish to enjoy Ubud Village are staying at home stay because, in addition to provide affordable price, the amenities are similar to hotels in the vicinity,” he said. After Galungan, passenger backflow booms Semarapura (Bali Post)—
After many residents of Nusa Penida were abuzz to come home in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan, similar activities were also seen when hundreds of Nusa Penida residents crossed from the Nusa Penida to Bali Island. After Galungan, the backflow passengers were booming at a number of traditional harbors at Kusamba, Friday (Oct 25). An officer of the Klungkung Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency in charge of the Bias hamlet traditional harbor, Kusamba, Made Sedana Yoga, said on Friday that booming backflow had occurred after Galungan or Umanis Galungan. He said that such condition was estimated to occur until Sunday. The spectacle regularly happened to him during his designation at the traditional harbor. Fortunately, the flood of passengers happened under nice weather to do the crossing. As a result, the crossing activity was not disrupted by bad weather. Sedana Yoga said the surge in passengers had also been anticipated by preparing a number of outrigger boat so that it would be ready to cope with the increasing
number of passengers. As happened on Friday, an outrigger boat could cross back and forth up to five times. However, the boat could still serve the crossing well. “An outrigger boat can cross back and forth for five times. As long as the weather permits and passenger remains available, it’s no problem,” he said. Similar comment was also given by one of the vessel crews, Kadek Agus Suardana. He said that in order the outrigger boat could function optimally, it should be added with two outboard engines so that the crossing could take place faster and conveniently for passengers. to do the crossing. As a result, the boat could cross up to five times. The addition of 400 PK engine, he said, could be done if the weather was nice during the crossing. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Jay-Z — under pressure to drop a collaboration with luxury store Barneys New York after it was accused of racially profiling two black customers — said Saturday he’s being unfairly “demonized” for waiting to hear all of the facts. The rap mogul made his first statement about the controversy in a posting on his website. He has been criticized for remaining silent after two young black people said they were profiled by Barneys after they purchased expensive items from their Manhattan store. An online petition and Twitter messages from fans have been circulating, calling on the star to leave his upcoming partnership with Barneys for the holiday season, which will have the store selling items by top designers, inspired by Jay-Z, with some proceeds going to his charity. But Jay-Z — whose real name is Shawn Carter — defended himself, say-
ing he hasn’t spoken about it because he’s still trying to figure out what happened. “I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys,” the statement said. “Why am I being demonized ... for not speaking immediately?” The two Barneys customers, Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips, said this week they were detained by police after making expensive purchases. DENPASAR - So far, the economic growth of Bali has been dominantly driven by trade, hotel and restaurant as well as the sector of services and transportation. Unfortunately, the agricultural sector in Bali deeply involved by almost 80 percent of the population only plays the role averagely 19.28 percent in the annual economic growth. An agricultural expert, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, doubling as former Chairman of the Indonesia Farmers Union (HKTI) of Bali, said that he saw the potential of agriculture in the broad sense (agriculture, horticulture and food) in Bali was very large. Although so far the role of agriculture was not so high to sustain the economic growth, he was confident and optimistic that in years to come the sector becoming the backbone of Balinese people would play a tremendous role in
sustaining the economic growth in Bali, provided that the agricultural sector could be maximally cultivated and well managed. “We all know the agricultural land in Bali is actually far more extensive than that of tourism. When the agricultural sector empowerment has been undertaken like the improvement of agricultural technology and preservation of quality of agricultural products, the sector can certainly play a significant role in the economic growth,” he said.
He asserted that Bali essentially had a great potential to develop and improve the agricultural sector amid the high demand of tourism sector, especially hotels and restaurants, for agricultural products. Unfortunately, all this time the agricultural products of local farmers could not fully be absorbed in the tourism sector. “In the future, at least the agricultural products of local farmers in Bali can be distributed to tourism sector so that tourism can become a host at its own home. Aside from being capable of reducing the amount of agricultural imports from outside, at least this strategy can give value to the agricultural products in Bali,” he advised. He also highly regretted the condition of agricultural products after harvest. So far, the reality indicated if the agricultural products in harvest season sometimes had
no value. Abundant volume did not fully provide benefits for farmers because the price dropped. “Suppose that we make a processing unit for the agricultural products, the agricultural products in the harvest season will remain to have higher selling price and even can increase the regional revenue,” he said. Different opinion was given by an agricultural and plantation observer, IB Raka Wiryanata. According to him, tourism sector would continue to dominate the economy of Bali. It could happen because so far there had been no real action from the government to the agricultural sector, so the agriculture turned sluggish. He also considered the recent weakening of the agriculture in Bali was also caused by a number of factors including the decrease of farmland due to conversion into
various other purposes. “Have a look at Bali where it seems still very dependent on other regions such as in the provision of various agricultural commodities. It is recorded that 6070 percent of the market share in this region is filled in by agricultural commodities from outside Bali,” he revealed doubling as Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association (APPSI) of Bali. If it continued to happen and any disruption happened to transportation from outside Bali impeding the delivery of agricultural commodities to Bali, it could be imagined that Bali would be paralyzed. Thus, revitalization of the agriculture would surely become strategic to be done related to increasing the economic structure and competitiveness of agricultural products in Bali. (kmb28)
