Prince to release new albums Agence France-Presse

PARIS - US pop star Prince will release two new albums at the end of September, his record label said on Tuesday, marking the end of one of the longest-running employment disputes in musical history. Prince -- whose 1984 album “Purple Rain” sold over 13 million copies in the US -- fell out with Warner Bros Records in the early 1990s, prompting him to change his name to an unpronounceable symbol and appear in public with the word “slave” daubed across his face. The name change bewildered fans and led the press to dub him “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince”. But following a reconciliation with the record label announced in April,

two albums -- “Art Official Age” and “Plectrumelectrum -- will be released on September 30, the label said on its website. “Art Official Age” is a 13-track solo album, described by the label as “a contemporary concoction of soul, R&B and funk”. The second is by Prince’s new band 3RDEYEGIRL consisting of guitarist Donna Grantis, drummer Hannah Ford Welton and bassist Ida Nielsen. Many of its “funk-rock” tracks were performed live on the group’s recent mini-tour. In its announcement, Warner Bros acknowledged the acrimonious dispute with the 56-year-old star -- who it first signed in 1977. The renewed partnership came about after it “returned to Prince the master re-

cordings of his pioneering 1980s albums, including “Dirty Mind”, “Purple Rain” and “Sign o’ the Times”, it said. The singer had demanded that he should retain the rights to the master tapes of his albums and also clashed with the label over the frequency of releases. The new agreement, however, looks unlikely to curb his public criticism of the way the entertainment industry is run. Just weeks after he signed his latest record deal, he lambasted music bosses for being lazy. Prior to Prince’s reconciliation with Warner Bros., he had used his own NPG Records label to release his more recent records. Under his new record deal, a digitally remastered deluxe edition of “Purple Rain” will also be released to mark the album’s 30th anniversary.

LOS ANGELES - Former 007 star Pierce Brosnan returns to the world of guns and spies in “The November Man,” an action thriller that pits his character against his former CIA bosses, with explosive effect. The Irish actor, who has never hidden his desire to have played James Bond for a little longer, said he is still up to the action game despite his 61 years -- although he had to work hard to get in shape. “I like my beer, I like my wine,” said the man who took on the role of Britain’s most famous fictional spy in four Bond movies. “I have to keep up. Tennis, work out, work out, play tennis... I have had so many trainers.”

His task: to extract a female spy, who just happens to be the mother of his daughter, from Moscow because she has evidence of sex crimes committed by a Russian presidential candidate. Devereaux’s former spy trainee, David Mason (Luke Bracey) is tasked in parallel with killing the former lover. Devereaux is devastated and vows vengeance against his former protege. As the story threatens to blow up in the CIA’s face, Mason is given the mission of killing his former mentor, whom he still respects and admires. Brosnan admits that playing a hardliving spy again after 12 years was tough. “There is a certain mileage on the bones, the heart and the soul,” he told a small group of reporters. “You have to work just as hard (in terms of training), but you don’t have to try so hard” in terms of credibility, given his 007 fame, he added. The imposing actor, who has deep blue eyes and still a star-power smile despite his years on the celebrity circuit, said training was tough. Said to have vowed to become an actor after seeing Sean Connery in “Goldfinger,” Brosnan talks easily and openly about his time as Her Majesty’s most famous spy. Director Roger Donaldson, who had already worked with Brosnan on 1997’s “Dante’s Peak,” added: “He’s a smart, intelligent guy (who has) made the best of his fame.” This included “not letting his fame destroy him like maybe Robin Williams did,” he said, referring to the comedy icon’s recent death by apparent suicide.

The UNAOC was initiated by the former UN secretary general Kofi Annan on July 14, 2005, and was co-sponsored by the former prime minister of Spain Jose Luis Rodreguez Zapatero and Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The forum will be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon, UN High Representative of the UNAOC Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, and prominent speakers from government and non-government organizations. The theme is based on Indonesia’s national motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” or “Unity in Diversity.” The motto reflects the outlook of Indonesia’s founding fathers and embraces the wealth of Indonesia’s cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity. Fuel scarce, Bali Police deploy special security Bali Post

DENPASAR - Other than in Java, fuel scarcity also started happening in Bali, especially in Denpasar. Vehicles were snaking at every petrol station. Even, some people could not purchase fuel. To anticipate any negative effect caused by the fuel shortages, Bali Police deployed special security.

“Two security systems are applied to prevent riots and hoarding of fuel at petrol station. However, the condition in Bali is not as severe as in other regions,” said Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, Tuesday (Aug 26). Security at each petrol station was intensified to prevent riots as people scrambled to get fuel. In addition, an investigation was also conducted by police to anticipate any fuel hoarding. “Sometimes, this kind of opportunity is taken advantage to hoard fuel that can result in a great advantage. This is what we want to anticipate. When proved to have hoarded, the culprits will be processed according to the existing procedures,” he said. According to the Spokesperson, the Chief of Bali Police, Benny Mokalu,

had ordered each county police department to deploy their personnel at respective petrol station. Every petrol station should be guarded by at least 2 to 3 officers. In addition, a patrol was also increased to check petrol stations with vulnerable condition. “Until now, the condition in Bali is not too severe. However, security continues to be made without specified time or until the condition returns to be normal,” said Hery. Based on field observation, on Tuesday around 10 o’clock in the morning, long lines occurred at petrol station located on Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, East Denpasar. Prohibited from buying fuel, fishermen protest Bali Post

SEMARAPURA - Fishermen on Kusamba Beach, Dawan subdistrict, Klungkung, protested. It happened because they were prohibited from purchasing fuel. Despite having owned the fisherman membership card, they were still prohibited from purchasing fuel at petrol station across Klungkung because the fuel stock tended to steadily decrease. It was conveyed by a fisherman from Kusamba, Nengah Rusta, Tuesday (Aug 26). He said that he very much wanted to go to sea because the fish catch of fishermen had started to be crowded. However, since four days ago, he had not been getting fuel. Every effort had been undertaken. He even admitted to have been pleading to Pertamina. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to

purchase fuel. As a result, he could just laze on the beach with other porters. A similar fate was also experienced by other fishermen on Kusamba Beach. As a result, the local fishing activities paralyzed. Fuel shortages had occurred since the past week. Fishermen finally lost revenue. They could only rent their boat to fishing hobbyists in the waters of Kusamba. Meanwhile, some others repaired nets and fixed boats. “Now, Pertamina is too decisive. Even, police are deployed to guard petrol stations to oversee the security each day,” said Rusta. Another fisherman, Wayan Lantur, also revealed similar comment. Due to fuel scarcity, he did not have any livelihood to meet the needs of family. He did not have any other skills other than being a fisherman. On that account, he

hoped the fuel stock could quickly get recovered. Aside from fishermen, the fish mongers were also affected by such condition. One of them was Wayan Ningsih who claimed to be distraught as no fishermen went to sea. Even, since four days ago, she suffered losses when coming to Kusamba Beach to get fish. Actually, she dared to purchase at more expensive price as long as the fish was available. If this condition continued, the fish boiling activities at Kusamba would depend again on the supply of fish from outside Bali. Unluckily, the fish supply from outside Bali only came occasionally. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CHICAGO — “Do-it-yourself” blood pressure measurements and medicine changes work better than usual doctor-office care in some patients, a study of older adults in England found. Those who did their own readings at home and adjusted their medicine as needed had healthier blood pressure levels after a year than those who got standard doctors’ care. Self-care patients weren’t completely on their own — any changes they made were part of a treatment plan previously approved by their doctors. But the patients didn’t need to consult their doctors every time they increased the dose if it was part of the original treatment plan. Why self-management worked best is uncertain, but patients who participated were taking more medication than the others and were perhaps more vigilant than doctors treating the usualcare group, the study suggests.

It’s possible usual-care doctors had “clinical inertia” — a phenomenon described in other research showing that physicians often fail to increase blood pressure medication doses even when office measurements show patients’ levels are too high, said study author Richard McManus, a professor and researcher at the University of Oxford. The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Nearly 1 in 3 U.S. adults have high blood pressure — measuring 140 over 90 or higher — but only about half of them have it adequately controlled, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. High blood pressure rates are similar in England, health surveys there have found. The study involved 450 patients with previous heart trouble, strokes, diabetes or kidney disease, aged 70 on average, who were followed for a year. About half got usual care; the

others did self-care. Average blood pressure measurements at the study’s start were about 143 over 80. At the end, that dropped to about 128 over 74 in the self-care patients and 138 over 76 in the usualcare group. That difference would be expected to result in a drop in heart problems or other complications, although more research is needed to evaluate longterm benefits, according to a JAMA editorial. The researchers estimate that if the self-care group’s lower levels could be sustained, they’d likely see a 30 percent reduction in stroke risk compared with the other group. Self-monitoring blood pressure is common in some countries and in the United Kingdom, and the study notes that blood pressure monitors are widely available there, costing as little as $25 (15 pounds, 18 euros). Similarly priced home blood-pressure monitors are sold in the United States.

In a long-awaited report that will be debated by member states at a meeting in October in Moscow, the United Nations health agency on Tuesday also voiced concern about the concentration of the $3 billion market in the hands of big tobacco companies. “In a nutshell, the WHO report shows that e-cigarettes and similar devices pose threats to public health,” Douglas Bettcher, director of the agency’s department on noncommunicable diseases, told a news briefing in Geneva. The uptake of e-cigarettes, which use battery-powered cartridges to produce a nicotine-laced vapour, has rocketed in the past two years, but there is fierce debate about the risks. Because they are so new, there is a lack of long-term scientific evidence to support their safety, and some fear they could lead to nicotine addiction and tobacco smoking. “We must emphasise that the onus of responsibility for showing safety, for answering many of these questions, must be on the com-

panies and the industries owning them,” Bettcher said. “The reports finds, at this point in time anyway, that there is insufficient evidence to conclude that e-cigarettes help users to quit smoking or not. The jury is still out,” he said. The European Union has already agreed to requirements around advertising and packaging to ensure the safety and quality of ecigarettes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has proposed banning sales to anyone under 18 but no curbs on advertising. Activists welcomed the WHO recommendations. “As Big Tobacco corners the e-cigarette market, it is using ecigarettes as a global PR scheme to gloss over its tarnished image, positioning itself as a ‘solution’ to the problem it drives. Five ASEAN countries sign women’s political declaration

DENPASAR - Five ASEAN member countries have signed the declaration of “Transforming Women’s Political Participation into Active Citizens in Southeast Asia” as an effort to fight for gender equality in politics. The five countries include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Timor Leste, chairman of the Indonesian Women’s Coalition (KPI), Dian Kartikasari said on Tuesday. “To date, the five countries have been struggling to increase the number of women getting elected and proving to be able to sit in parliament,” Dian noted. According to her, women’s coalition members have realized that representation of women in the field of politics is important in advancing gender equality, freedom, human rights, and democracy as a whole. “They also urged that sustainable development and peace can be achieved by ensuring the participation of women in politics,” Dian stated. The declaration also called for actions in several areas, including the involvement of women in government and politics through direct representatives or freely elected. Likewise, the declaration has urged an increased access for women politicians to take the position of leader and decision maker, to enable them to actively voice their political rights. “They should be able to change the paradigm that will help women to become leaders or equal partners with men in the community of Southeast Asia,” Dian added. The meeting carried the theme “Women in Political Leadership in Southeast Asia.”

DENPASAR - A U.S. teenager detained in Bali in connection with the grisly death of her mother has hired a new Indonesian lawyer on the advice of her U.S.-based legal team, her police-appointed attorney said. Heather Mack, 19, was scheduled to be questioned by police this week when she would be advised by a new lawyer, Haposan Sihombing, her current legal representative, told Reuters. “We received a letter from (Chicago-based attorney) Michael Elkin...to appoint an Indonesian lawyer by the name of Raja Nasution,” Sihombing said. He did not elaborate. Mack, 19, from Chicago, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, were arrested on Aug. 13 as suspects in the

death of Mack’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, 62, whose battered body was found in a suitcase in a taxi outside the resort island of Bali’s luxury St. Regis hotel. An official at the hospital that conducted the autopsy said von WieseMack had been repeatedly hit on the face and head with a blunt object. Mack and her mother had a troubled relationship and von Wiese-Mack had frequently reported that her daughter punched and bit her, according to police reports cited by Chicago media.

Von Wiese-Mack had recently moved to a condominium in Chicago. Her husband, and Heather’s father, classical music composer James Mack, died in 2006. Mack has so far refused to make a statement to police or to Sihombing. It was not clear whether Schaefer has retained an American attorney. The two suspects have not been formally charged with a crime. Under Indonesian law, charges would follow an investigation that could take weeks.

SEMARAPURA - State losses related to the allegation of corruption case in the land acquisition for Gunaksa Quay is in fantastic amount. Head of Klungkung District Attorney, Totok Bambang Sapto Dwijo, said on Tuesday (Aug 26) that it valued at over IDR 7 billion. His party did not want if the handling of the corruption allegation cases related to the land procurement and physical development of Gunaksa Quay would face the same end. “Today, there is a turning point to restore public confidence in law enforcement by Klungkung District Attorney in the handling of corruption cases,” he said. He judged the Gunaksa Quay case was only a fraction of the alleged corruption cases occurred within the past 10 years during the leadership of Wayan Candra. SINGARAJA - Drought condition is still experienced by the community of Tegallinggah, Sukasada subdistrict. One of the local residents, Wayan Sukarni, 50, should purchase clean water. Moreover, to get the clean water she had to stand in line at local water cistern and brought it home on the head by jerrycan, Tuesday afternoon (Aug 26). She claimed to forcibly purchase clean water on foot along 200 meters considering it was difficult to get clean water at the village during dry season and prolonged drought. Moreover, it had not rained for so long. The clean water purchased was used for cooking, bathing and washing clothes of her husband and children. Local residents purchased water at the home of Made Sugianta. When arriving at location, residents should line up by sequencing their jerrycan and waiting the turn to purchase the clean water. The price of water was IDR 1,000 per small jerrycan and they were respectively charged with subscription fee at IDR 15,000 each month. “Since my childhood, it’s been indeed difficult to get water here, sir. I am accustomed to doing this because I am not tired. With IDR 1,000, I can purchase a jerrycan of water and we have to queue for that,” she said. Meanwhile, Made Sugianta, 55, whose home had water connection said the water sourced from Subak Tying Tali. For the operating cost to get the clean water, he should pay at IDR 400,000 each month to subak. “The water subscription each month reaches IDR 400,000, while we charge the residents at IDR 1,000 to get the clean water. ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s ruling party convened on Wednesday to confirm Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as its new chairman and prime minister-designate, to replace Recep Tayyip Erdogan as he becomes president — a position he has pledged to transform from a ceremonial post to one of real power. Erdogan hand-picked his stalwart ally to succeed him and the 55-year old is standing unopposed for chairman of the Justice and Development Party at its extraordinary congress. Erdogan, Turkey’s first popularly elected president, is to be sworn in Thursday. Davutoglu is expected to play a largely backseat role, allowing Erdogan — who has dominated Turkish politics for over a decade — to keep a grip on the running of the country. Although the office of president is mainly ceremonial, Erdogan has said he will activate its seldom-used powers, such as summoning, and presiding over Cabinet meetings. Erdogan told delegates that he would appoint Davutoglu to form the new government immediately after his inauguration ceremony and that a new government would be in place by Friday. Davutoglu has steered Turkish foreign policy as Erdogan’s chief adviser since 2003 and as foreign minister since 2009. Though he won praise in his early years for efforts to forge closer ties with Turkey’s old foes, detractors say his “zero problems with neighbors” policy has since unraveled, leaving Turkey with very few allies in the Middle East. Davutoglu’s main task will be to keep the party together after Erdogan — Turkish history has two examples of former prime ministers who sought to maintain control of parliament after moving to the presidency, only to see their parties collapse. MINSK, Belarus — Ukraine’s president said Wednesday that Vladimir Putin accepts the principles of a peace plan for Ukraine but the Russian leader insisted that only Kiev can reach a cease-fire deal with the pro-Moscow separatists. Following meetings between Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that included a one-on-one session that stretched into the night, there was no indication of a quick end to the fighting that has engulfed eastern Ukraine. “This is not our business,” Putin said of any cease-fire plan. “This is Ukraine’s business.” Russia “can only help to create an atmosphere of trust for this important and necessary process,” Putin said. “We in Russia cannot talk about any conditions for the cease-fire, about any agreements between Kiev, Donetsk, Luhansk,” the two rebel regions. Although Poroshenko told reporters that he had secured support for a peace plan from leaders who attended the summit and Putin called the sessions “overall positive,” the first substantial encounter between the two leaders did not produce a breakthrough in efforts to end the fighting. If anything, there were signs of spreading violence. For the past two days, heavy shelling hit an area of southeast Ukraine that had escaped the intense fighting of recent weeks, and Ukrainian officials said the pro-Russia separatists it has been

battling were aiming to open a new front. The meeting in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, also came on the same day that Ukraine said it captured 10 Russian soldiers who had come over the border. Moscow is accused by Kiev and the West of arming and supporting the rebels — a charge the Kremlin denies — and it is not clear how much it is willing or able to try to pressure them into ending the fighting. Besides their face-to-face talks, Putin and Poroshenko also met Tuesday with the presidents of Kazakhstan and Belarus and top European Union officials. The presence of the other two presidents highlighted one of the difficult issues of Ukraine-Russia tensions: Their countries are part of a trade bloc with Russia, and Moscow fears that Poroshenko’s determination to pursue closer ties with the EU will hurt Russia’s economy.

KUALA LUMPUR - As bodies from downed Flight MH17 were brought home last week, a group of Malaysia Airlines flight attendants, in black mourning headscarves contrasting with their pink and turquoise uniforms, sobbed and clung to each other in grief. The 19,500 staff of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) now face a new ordeal - a quarter of them may lose their jobs at the unprofitable airline, hit by two jet disasters this year. Flight MH370 remains untraced since its disappearance en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March. Deep job losses, route cuts and a change of leadership are expected to feature in a restructuring plan being prepared by Malaysia’s government for announcement as early as Thursday, when MAS also reports second-quarter results. Likely the last before being de-listed, the numbers are expected to show plunging ticket sales and heavy losses even before July’s shooting down of MH17 over Ukraine. As state fund Khazanah Nasional, the majority owner, prepares to take the company private and inject efficiency into the airline, it must tackle crumbling staff morale and win over the powerful main labour union if turnaround efforts are to succeed. “MAS is suffering from an image problem and a problem with the staff,” said Nik Huslan, former chief pilot at MAS. “They have to find someone the staff can respect and rally behind.” Even before the lost aircraft tragedies, airline insiders said staff discontent had been growing for years due to strategy U-turns, leadership changes and poor career prospects. One of the region’s most prestigious and fastest-growing airlines in the 1990s, MAS has steadily fallen

behind high-end rivals such as Singapore Airlines and been battered by the rise of Asia’s budget carriers like AirAsia. The company hasn’t made an annual profit since 2010. This year’s twin disasters have caused new stresses. A total of 186 MAS flight crew quit between January and July, many of them due to family pressure not to fly after the crashes, MAS says. Over 5,000 MAS staff work as cabin crew or pilots and the airline says the resignation rate has now returned to normal. About a quarter of MAS staff are likely to lose their jobs under Khazanah’s plan, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The pill is likely to be sweetened with costly redundancy packages and offers of jobs at other state enterprises. The company has cut fares on most of its routes in an attempt to lure back nervous passengers, though it is too early to gauge its success. It has almost doubled its commission payments to Australiabased travel agents to revive sales there, according to Australian media reports. Fonterra is New Zealand’s largest business, with annual revenue of $16 billion. It’s a cooperative owned by farmers and is a lynchpin of the nation’s economy. Newmont drops action against Indonesia over ore ban

JAKARTA - US mining giant Newmont said it has withdrawn an international arbitration claim against Indonesia over a controversial mineral ore export ban after a breakthrough in talks with the government. Last month, Newmont announced it was seeking a ruling at the Washington-based International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes to allow it to resume exports of copper from its huge mine in central Indonesia. But the company announced it was withdrawing the arbitration filing, saying it hoped the move would help it strike a deal with the government. “The decision to discontinue and withdraw arbitration comes after commitments from senior government officials,” said Newmont’s Indonesian unit in a statement late Tuesday. It added the officials had pledged to open “formal negotiations” on a new agreement with Newmont that would allow it to resume work at its Batu Hijau mine, on condition the legal action was withdrawn. Exports from Batu Hijau have been halted since January, when Southeast Asia’s top economy introduced a ban

on shipments of some unprocessed minerals, and higher taxes on others that can still be shipped out of the country. JAKARTA - The Indonesian parliament on Tuesday passed a longawaited law to bolster the geothermal energy industry and tap the power of the vast archipelago’s scores of volcanoes. Made up of thousands of islands stretching from the Indian to the Pacific Oceans, Indonesia is home to some 130 volcanoes and is estimated to hold around 40 percent of the world’s geothermal potential. However it produces only a tiny fraction of its energy by converting underground heat into electricity, and lags far behind others such as the United States and the neighbouring Philippines. Red tape and legal uncertainty have long held back the industry and obstructed much-needed investment, but the government hopes the new law will speed up the development of the sector. Most importantly, it stipulates that exploration for geothermal energy and

development of plants is no longer considered mining. It was regarded as such previously, which meant the industry faced problems working in Indonesia’s vast tracts of protected forest, where there is much geothermal potential but mining is illegal. The law also stipulates higher prices for electricity produced by geothermal, following complaints from companies developing plants that tariffs were not enough to cover the high cost of production. “Indonesia’s need for energy keeps increasing,” lawmaker Nazarudin Kiemas, who headed a parliamentary committee on the new law, was quoted as saying on the legislature’s website. “There is abundant potential for geothermal energy.” Outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono must sign off on the new law, but that is expected to be a formality. Indonesia is estimated to have more than 28,000 megawatts of geothermal

potential but is currently producing just over 1,300 MW of its electricity from the clean source. Most of its electricity comes from coal and oil. High cost has long been one of the major obstacles. A geothermal plant costs about twice as much as a coal-fired power station, and can take many more years in research and development to get online. But once established, geothermal plants like the one built in Kamojang on the main island of Java in the 1980s can convert the endless supply of volcanic heat into electricity with much lower overheads -- and less pollution -- than coal. Yudhoyono has also focused on geothermal as part of his plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels by 2020. Indonesia is the world’s thirdbiggest greenhouse gas emitter due its use of dirty fuels to produce electricity and to rampant deforestation.

Boxer Jermain Taylor arrested after home shooting Associated Press

MAUMELLE, Arkansas — Former middleweight boxing champion Jermain Taylor was arrested Friday following a shooting at his home in suburban Little Rock, Arkansas, according to a spokesman for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office. “Mr. Taylor was arrested for domestic battery, first-degree, and aggravated assault,” said sheriff’s Lt. Carl Minden. “It was his cousin and another individual that came over to his house, an altercation ensued, he (Taylor) grabbed a weapon and opened fire.” The cousin was hospitalized in serious condition with an apparent gunshot wound, the other man, described as a friend of the cousin, was not injured, Minden said. The two drove away from the home and were found at a Dollar General discount store several blocks away, Minden said, after a woman believed to be Taylor’s wife called 911 shortly before 6 p.m. to report an intruder and a shooting at the home. The names of the cousin and other man were not released. Taylor, 36, was being held in the Pulaski County jail without bond early Wednesday, according to online jail records. His attorney did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Minden said the nature of the altercation between the men was still under investigation, and that Taylor was arrested without incident. “He was very calm and very cooperative with our investigators,” according to Minden.

for his new club, may have made ten changes for the game, but nobody in Milton Keynes, 45 miles north-west of London, was allowing that to detract from the greatest day in the history of the football club - and arguably the town itself. Developed from a small village in the 1960s, with the aim of becoming a major regional centre, Milton Keynes had been best known until a decade ago for its roundabouts and iconic sculpture of concrete cows. Then in 2003 Wimbledon football club, FA Cup winners 15 years earlier, were moved there from south London by their owners against the wishes of most supporters. MUNICH — Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich says it has reached a deal with Roma to sign Morocco defender Mehdi Benatia. Benatia will travel to Munich soon to undergo a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract. Bayern says it has agreed with Roma not to disclose the terms of the deal. But Italian media reports say Roma was asking between €25 million ($32.98 million) and €30 million ($39.58 million) for the defender. Bayern was looking for a defender after Javi Martinez tore knee ligaments, an injury that will keep him sidelined for about six months.

Former Celtic players accused the club of refusing to invest sufficiently in the squad after the Scottish champions wasted a Champions League reprieve by crashing out of the competition in the play-off round. Rubbing salt into the wounds of elimination is the fact that Norwegian manager Ronny Deila and his team have achieved the unwanted distinction of being knocked out of the same competition twice in three weeks. “I think they’re stockpiling cash,” former Scottish international winger Andy Walker, who played almost 200 times for the club, told Sky Sports on Wednesday. “They’re not prepared to pay serious money for anyone with pedigree. They’re very much a selling club.”

Former hero Charlie Nicholas was equally critical, claiming of the 45-time Scottish champions and 1967 European Cup winners: “The only interest of board members is cash and finance. That’s why they spend two million pounds ($3.31 million) on budget players who don’t have any experience of the Champions League. “The quality they’ve brought in is very, very poor. In the cold light of day what’s going to happen is that fans won’t be turning up and Celtic can write off the trust that the fans were giving them.” Terry Butcher, the former England international who played for great rivals Rangers, added: “They’re not even half the side they were. It’s really disappointing for Scottish football.”
