SINGAPORE - A Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIA) flight to Milan caught fire early on Monday after returning to Singapore’s Changi airport following an engine oil warning message but all passengers were safe, the airline and airport officials said. The aircraft’s right engine caught fire after the aircraft, a Boeing 777300ER, touched down at Changi airport at around 6:50 am (2250 GMT). Emergency services put out

Throughout 2015, there were a total of 96 stillbirths Bali’s eight districts and municipality: Gianyar (50 infants), Buleleng (10), Badung (8), Karangasem (7), Klungkung (4), Bangli (4), Jembrana (3), Tabanan (1) and Denpasar (1). Kadek Iwan Darmawan, Section Head of Family Health at the Bali Health Agency, explained that stillbirth is different from infant mortality. Stillbirth means that the infant died in the womb, while infant mortality is when the infant is born and alive and then dies anytime between the age of zero day and one year. Stillbirth is caused by a number of complex factors. It can happen due to the poor nutritional intake of pregnant women or from a mother being anemic during pregnancy. “Similarly, it can also be caused by other diseases in the mother such as diabetes mellitus, asthma et cetera,” he said, on Sunday (Jun. 26). However, the exact cause of death is not known. A stillbirth is considered when fetal death occurs anywhere after 20 weeks of until just before the delivery. “The main cause is usually malnutrition and anemia in pregnant women as well as accompanying diseases in pregnant women” he said adding that women who become pregnant before the age of 20 are also at risk of stillbirth as the mother still needs a high nutritional intake herself. “When the mother is pregnant, her baby also needs nutrients” he added. So, getting married very young can affect pregnancy as can getting pregnant less than two years after giving birth to the last child. BEIJING — China on Sunday recovered an experimental probe launched aboard a new generation rocket, marking another milestone in its increasingly ambitious space program that envisions a mission to Mars by the end of the decade. Space program authorities said the spaceship’s landing on the vast Inner Mongolian steppe keeps China on schedule to place its second space station into orbit later this year. The launch of the spaceship aboard the newly developed Long March 7 rocket on Saturday was hailed as a breakthrough in the use of safer, more environmentally friendly fuels. The launch also marked the first use of the massive new Wenchang Satellite Launch Center on the southern island province of Hainan. Since launching its first manned mission in 2003, China has sent up an experimental space station, the Tiangong 1, staged a spacewalk and landed its Yutu rover on the moon. Its second space station, the Tiangong 2, is due to be slung into space in September. Following that, the Shenzhou 11 spaceship with two astronauts on board is scheduled to dock with the station and remain for several days. Administrators suggest a manned landing on the moon may also be in the program’s future. A source of enormous national pride, China’s military-backed space program plans a total of 20 space missions this year at a time when the U.S. and other countries’ programs are seeking new roles. China is also developing the Long March 5 heavier-lift rocket needed to launch the Tiangong 2 and other massive payloads. China plans to launch a mission to land a rover on Mars by 2020, attempting to recreate the success of the U.S. Viking 1 mission that landed a rover on the planet four decades ago. (ap)

LONDON - A UK-based laboratory is working to eradicate animal testing in the cosmetics industry by developing alternative methods which are not only cruelty-free but more scientifically advanced than other current tests. XCellR8 uses scaffolds of cells from human skin donated by plastic surgery patients, which they say are ideally suited to testing cosmetic products. “For skin irritation testing the cells are isolated from human skin that has been donated by people who have had plastic surgery and they’ve said that they’re quite happy for the tissue to be used for research purposes. So human skins cells are isolated from those skin samples and they’re grown in the laboratory,” explained XCellR8 founder Dr. Carol Treasure. Skin cells are the first cells to be exposed to cosmetics and can provide a model for damage to other sites of the body. Many cosmetic ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream, passing then to the organs, so it is vital any harmful effects are assessed. Trea-

sure said their methods provide a test bed to accurately determine any health implications. “What you end up with is an artificial piece of skin in the laboratory where if you cut a cross section through it is almost identical to real skin on the body. It even has a skin barrier so you can apply full cosmetic formulations to the surface. And what we do is then incubate those skin models with samples of cosmetic products or ingredients and then we can look at how much damage is being done to the skin over a period of time,” Treasure told Reuters. A number of cosmetic companies have sent their ingredients to XCellR8 to test at their lab in Cheshire, north-west England, including ethical cosmetics company Lush. Other versions of a human cell-

based alternative to the traditional animal tests have been available for some years. But Treasure said the standard methods still use animal components, such as rat liver extract and bovine and horse serum. “In many cases the culture of human cells still requires the use of animal components such as bloodderived components or liver extract which mean that ultimately animals have still been sacrificed for that work. One of the unique things about XCellR8 is that we’ve eradicated all of those components and so we have a truly animal free testing laboratory,” Treasure told Reuters. For the industry-standard human skin sensitivity test, XCellR8 has replaced the bovine serum normally used with a human serum, and have shown that the test still works to an equivalent standard for regulatory purposes. PANAMA CITY — Fireworks exploded as a huge container ship made the inaugural passage through the newly expanded Panama Canal on Sunday, formally launching the Central American nation’s multibillion-dollar bet on a bright economic future despite tough times for global shipping. The Chinese-owned Cosco Shipping Panama went through the Atlantic locks at Agua Clara in the early morning, sailed the 50-mile (80-kilometer) passage to the Cocoli locks near the capital and passed into the Pacific in the evening, stewarded by tugboats and cheered by dignitaries and exuberant crowds of thousands. The $5.25 billion project went online nearly two years late after construction delays, labor strife and apparent cost overruns, but officials were still bullish and in a celebratory mood as they declared the expanded canal open for business. “This is an achievement that all of us Panamanians should be proud of,” President Juan Carlos Varela said at the inaugural ceremony on

The market will rebound again and when we are in an ‘up’ cycle again, shipping will generate money and the Panama Canal will generate money,” Benitez said. Since the 50-mile (80-kilometer) canal was handed over from U.S. control at the end of 1999, it has generated about $10 billion in direct income for the Central American nation and is responsible for about 40 percent of its GDP, factoring in related economic activity. JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has expressed deep condolences over the death of Indonesian ambassador to Croatia Alexander Litaay on Sunday. “I hope the family remains strong and patience in dealing with the loss,” she said. Ambassador Alex died on Sunday (June 26) at Dubrava hospital in Zagreb, due to a heart disease, according to the foreign ministry. He had suffered a heart disease and had a stroke since April 23, 2016 and remained in coma since April 25. Ambassador Alex died at the age of 68 and survived by a wife and three children. Alex Litaay was a politician from the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP). He was born in Ambon, Maluku, and appointed as ambassador to Croatia by President Joko Widodo on January 13, 2016. Several politicians from PDIP including cabinet secretary Pramono Anung and legislator Eva Kusuma Sundari were among those who have sent condolences to the family of the ambassador.(ant)

The ambassador termed the result of the referendum conducted on June 23, 2016 as one reflecting the aspiration of all the British people everywhere. “Anyone, whether they chose the UK to remain a member of the EU or leave it, should put aside all differences for the sake of unity and togetherness, while we are processing the implications and finding solutions in the future,” he added. The ambassador called upon all parties not to dispute the referendum. “Its important to remain calm and rational and use our minds without emotion,” he stressed. Reuters reported that the British people who wanted the UK to remain a member of the European Union lagged behind those who wanted the country to leave the EU by 21 million votes. About 17.4 million people voted for the UK to leave the EU and 16.1 million people wanted the country to remain part of the EU. Indonesia says coal on hold for Philippines after 7 sailors abducted

JAKARTA/MANILA - Indonesia said on Friday a halt on coal shipments to the Philippines will remain in place until Manila can secure its waters after seven Indonesian sailors were kidnapped, the latest in a string of abductions. Philippine authorities could not immediately confirm the hostage-taking but said a Filipino woman held since September was freed on Friday by Abu Sayyaf, an Islamist militant group that has amassed tens of millions of dollars from kidnappings for ransom. It was unclear whether the sailors were taken by Abu Sayaff, which has beheaded two Canadian nationals in recent weeks after ransom deadlines passed. The group is still holding men from Japan, the Netherlands and Norway. Indonesia is concerned that piracy in the Sulu Sea area, a major sea traffic corridor for the world’s top thermal coal exporter, could reach levels previously seen in Somalia. “The moratorium on coal exports to the Philippines will be extended until there is a

guarantee for security from the Philippines government,” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told reporters. Indonesia supplies 70 percent of the Philippines’ coal import needs, which Indonesian data shows stood at about 15 million tonnes, worth around $800 million, last year. Analysts say $40 billion worth of cargo passes through the Sulu Sea area a year, including supertankers from the Indian Ocean that cannot use the crowded Malacca Strait. Marsudi said earlier the seven Indonesians were kidnapped by two different armed groups in attacks on a tugboat towing a coal-carrying barge and that the government would “try all options to free the hostages”. Fourteen Indonesians were abducted in

two separate assaults on tugboats in March and April but were freed in May. In April, the Indonesian navy instructed all commercial vessels to avoid piracy-prone waters near the southern Philippines. Filipino captive Marites Flor, abducted from an upscale resort in September along with Canadian Robert Hall, was freed at dawn on Friday on Jolo, an army spokesman said. Hall was beheaded on June 13. In Davao City, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte said they were “able to negotiate” for the release of two captives, a Norwegian man and Filipino woman. “The kidnapped Norwegian could not get out yet because he could not cross because of the rough seas,” Duterte said, adding “there will be time that I will have to confront the Abu Sayyaf”. Alarmed at the frequency of attacks, port authorities in some areas of Indonesia, particularly Kalimantan on Borneo, have stopped issuing permits to ships taking coal to the southern Philippines. Air pollution to kill millions more without energy policy change-IEA LONDON - Premature deaths from air pollution will continue to rise to 2040 unless changes are made to the way the world uses and produces energy, the International Energy Agency said on Monday. Around 6.5 million deaths globally are attributed each year to poor air quality inside and outside, making it the world’s fourth-largest threat to human health, behind high blood pressure, dietary risks and smoking. Harmful pollutants such as particulate matter - which can contain acids, metals, soil and dust particles - sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, are responsible for the most widespread effects of air pollution. Tiny particulate matter can cause lung cancer, strokes and heart disease over the long term, as well as trigger symptoms such as heart attacks that kill more rapidly. The release of these pollutants is mainly due to the unregulated or inefficient production and use of energy, the IEA said in a special report on energy and air pollution. Without action, annual premature deaths attributable to outdoor air pollution will increase to 4.5 million in 2040 from around 3 million currently. Premature deaths due to household air pollution however, should fall to 2.9 million from 3.5 million. Asia will account for almost 90 percent of the rise in deaths. Even though global emissions are

forecast to decline overall to 2040, existing and planned energy policies will not be enough to improve air quality, the report said. Harmful greenhouse gas emissions should continue to fall in industrialised countries and recent signs of decline in China should continue, but emissions are set to rise in India, southeast Asia and Africa as energy demand growth dwarfs efforts to improve air quality. The IEA said increasing total energy investment by 7 percent, or $4.7 trillion, to 2040 could help ensure premature deaths from outdoor pollution fall to 2.8 million and from household air pollution to 1.3 million. “This is completely peanuts. With a seven percent increase you can save over three million lives,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol told reporters in London. New energy and air quality policies will also deliver cleaner air. Each country needs to have a credible, long-term air quality goal, the report said. There should be a package of measures for the energy sector such as fitting coal-fired power plants with scrubbers; more use of renewable energy; increased energy efficiency and emissions control, it said. A few minutes later he walked off the field, a dazed, pained look on his bearded face. The greatest player of his generation, perhaps soccer’s best ever, he was still without a title on Argentina’s national team — one he says may never come. “The national team is over for me,” he told the Argentine network TyC Sports after Chile beat the Albiceleste on Sunday night for the Copa America title. “It’s been four finals. It’s not meant for me. I tried. It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it, so I think it’s over.” Chile beat Argentina in the final for the second straight year, 4-2 in the shootout following a 0-0 tie that ended an expanded 16-nation Copa in the United States to mark the championship’s 100th anniversary. Messi, five-time FIFA Player of the Year, winner of four Champions League titles and eight Spanish La Liga crowns with Barcelona, was crushed.
