PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The office of Cambodia’s most celebrated filmmaker is filled with books on the Khmer Rouge. On his desk, on the walls, in the filing cabinets and in every corner of Rithy Panh’s dimly lit office are memories of his country’s greatest tragedy. Probing the painful past started as a coping mechanism for Panh and evolved into a career. For the past two and a half decades, Panh has made movies that he considers his duty as a survivor, and his debt to the dead. highly original film in which the starring roles are played by static clay figures. It’s also the first Cambodian film to be nominated for an Academy Award, and could win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars this weekend. The 51-year-old filmmaker said he makes movies because “I had to find a way to work with my memories.” “When you survive a genocide, it’s like you’ve been radiated by a nuclear bomb,” Panh said during an interview at his Phnom Penh office, which is inside a film preservation center that he runs. “It’s like you’ve been killed once already, and you come back with death inside of you.” Many of Pahn’s movies have been documentaries that have earned critical acclaim but limited commercial success. He has interviewed the regime’s former torturers, prison guards and survivors as part of his conviction that Cambodia must face its past to build a better future. “The Missing Picture” is a poetic and

SANTA MONICA, California — A California jury has ordered Lisa Kudrow to pay her former manager $1.6 million in residuals from her work on “Friends.” The Los Angeles County Superior Court jury returned its verdict Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by Scott Howard. He claimed he had an oral agreement with the actress and was owed a percentage of her earnings on the hit NBC sitcom. Kudrow contended that she had already paid Howard more than $11 million before they parted ways in 2007. Kudrow’s attorney, Gerald Sauer, says the verdict will be appealed. City News Service says testimony during the trial indicated that Kudrow was earning more than $1 million per episode by the end of the show’s run. Kudrow starred on “Friends” from 1994 to 2004.

It was revealed by the lecturer of the Graduate School of Economics, Udayana University, Dr. Gede Sudjana Budhi, when met in Denpasar. He said the people of Bali were then marginalized as a result of the unstoppable invasion of big capitalists. The development of Bali should be returned to the concept of holistic human, where the government protected its people. “The concept of development must be returned to the model as implemented during the administration of Governor Ida Bagus Mantra by developing Bali with a holistic human, where the inefficient craftsmen and entrepreneurs were protected such as in Kuta. Large entrepreneurs were not allowed to enter,” he said.
Such efforts, said Sudjana, aimed to give the opportunity to people in order they had time to learn so they were ready to compete in the free market. “Such a policy no longer exists today. For instance, more than 60 percent of craftsmen in Tegallalang have shifted their profession to breeder because they lacked of order as a result of role played by greater capital,” he said. According to him, the government should build the community-base business as having been widely applied in a number of developing countries. Archipelago hotels gear up for Seclusion Day Known as the seclusion day, Nyepi is the Hindu celebration in Bali where, for 24 hours, all daily activities come to a halt. For 2014, Nyepi falls on Monday March 31. The day is a public holiday in Indonesia, and from 6am until 6am the following day, the Balinese will fast, meditate and stay silent. Nobody is allowed to walk the streets and the use of electricity is restricted. Ngurah Rai International Airport will also be closed, with overhead flights being redirected around the island. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

It may be a tricky ride ahead for the main street shop, which is now attempting to walk the snooty high fashion runway. Yet the company, which has still not been allowed on the official Fashion Week calendar, put on a buzzy show-spectacle replete with strobe lights, plasma screens and Jessica Alba which may go some way in shutting up the detractors — at least until next season. Alba may earn millions every time she does a movie, but it doesn’t stop her counting her pennies. The Sin City actress turned up at Wednesday’s show in a white H&M lace dress with black tights, hugging model Miranda Kerr for the cameras. “Yes, I’m wearing H&M. It feels very romantic, sort of gothic. Red lips and black tights throw off the romantic lacing. Mixing high and low that’s how I dress,” Alba told the Associated Press. “I love shopping at H&M and I can always find great pieces, if I need a great blazer or a pencil skirt,” said the multimillionaire, momentarily forgetting she can afford a stylist.

myself for 22 years when I started in ‘87 as head of design, and the vision was that we would make nice clothes at good value for money — something for all people. Fashion for everybody,” she told The Associated Press. But how does she answer the high fashion snoots that say lesser quality clothes have no place on Paris’ esteemed runways? “I really admire people that do things by hand and fantastic hand craft — but I think we can all exist. There must be a place for us all. Not everybody can pay for that haute couture, and they also deserve some fashion,” she said.
DRIES VAN NOTEN IS BOLD AS BRASS
Dries Van Noten infused what he called a “glimmer of Glam” with the optical lines of famed British artist Bridget Riley. The result was a collection that was much bolder than usual, but with some beautiful statements. Glam-rock-style silver wave patterns made the silhouette near-invisible and while black stripes against strips of printed flowers that played optically with two and three-dimensions. Strips of floral prints sometimes looked like camouflage, the designer’s signature, inset like shards on a skirt below an oversize or daintily fitting top. Van Noten, again, shows he is Paris Fashion Week’s master of illusion. At times, however, some of the thick swirling patterns ended up looking simply a bit too brash and might stop traffic for the wrong reasons. This was the case, for instance, on one otherwise cool anachronistic Regency jacket in with contemporary black-beige lines, and, elsewhere, in wide swirls of contrasting vermillion and navy. “I think it will be better if the reclamation is directed to the east, namely to the former quarry area. Now, it is dormant. After dredging the sand, it must then be restored and normalized. profits only,” he explained. This former Dean of the Tourism Faculty, Udayana University, added that the current tourism development had gone wrong. According to him, the development of tourism had much ignored the three tourism philosophies, namely the logics, ethics and aesthetics. “Related to the logics, we have to think whether it is right or wrong, which one is right in accordance with the assessment. In terms of ethics, it is related to the good or bad, we have to choose the good one. In terms of the aesthetics, it is related to beauty or beast, we have to choose beauty. For instance, the toll road now looks beautiful. If there will be reclamation and high-rise buildings, especially in the mangrove forest, and suppose the Grand Forest Park (Tahura) gets permission to build a restaurant, it will look like Jakarta and nothing will look beautiful,” he said. Change is underfoot at Rochas, the old French house that is famed to have been first to put pockets on skirts. Alessandro Dell’Acqua showed his debut collection, following predecessor Marco Zanini’s departure for Schiaparelli — and the new man certainly paid homage to Rochas’ couture style. The huge volume that’s made the house such a hit in recent years was present on off-kilter trapeze silhouettes, often on fastidiously embroidered gowns. But there was more than a dash of eccentricity: Full skirts with unusually loose waists swaggered down the catwalk, while some even sported second A-line skirt underneath with buttoned up princess coats adding a prudish modesty. It was a strange collection — known as “demicouture:” not quite ready-to-wear, not quite couture. But somehow it worked.

At least, the culvert along 100 meters mounted to protect the land owned by residents has been destroyed. One of the local residents said the impact of abrasion began to emerge after the construction of the Pengambengan pier. The pier jutted into the sea was alleged to have changed the direction of the ocean currents. Mrs. Ati, a resident of Puana hamlet, said the sea waves were getting stronger, particularly to the west. Not to mention when the high tides, the house of residents was submerged in the sea water. Similar condition was also seen on the east side of the pier. A number of
residents had become the victims of abrasion, including the Naval Post that was previously located away on the beach, but had been exhausted. Residents told if the impact of abrasion around the harbor was indeed much slower compared to other regions like Cupel and Pebuahan. They hoped it could be handled by the government such as by building revetment. Some factories in the east side of the harbor had also been threatened by abrasion. Some of them decided to make their own revetment by stones to protect the plant. Meanwhile, the land of residents who were unable to make revetment was more severely affected. As in the border of the Pengambengan Pier and coastal areas of Cupel looked to have been destroyed. DENPASAR - Total amount of traffic accident in Bali is increasingly alarming. Even, there has been no appropriate solution that can minimize the number of accident. Various attempts have been made by related parties such as the Directorate of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police and its ranks as well as the government to diminish the number of accidents. For example, it is made through socialization by visiting schools, installation of appealing banners and empowering safety riding and law enforcement. However, such efforts are still considered to give less maximal results. From the data of the Directorate of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police, the accident rate in Bali reaches around 2,000 cases each year. Even, the death toll reaches 2 people per day. So, it can be said the case of traffic accident in Bali is the second killing machine after tsunami. This matter was revealed when the Bali Post daily newspaper held a discussion at Warung 63 on Jalan Veteran Denpasar, Wednesday (Feb 26). The discussion invited police authority, academician, the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) for Bali Region and Jasa Raharja Insurance. According to the Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto EP, when speaking about traffic accident, his party was very concern about the issue. However, to resolve the traffic accident and then find its solution could not be made partially. In other words, it did not only involve police, transportation agencies, provincial government and the central government itself. However, all components should be involved to prevent the number of accidents. From the data existing in the
Tabanan Police jurisdiction, quantitatively and qualitatively, during the period of 2011 to 2012 it had showed a decline in the number of accident. In 2011, the traffic accident totally reached 326 cases, while in 2012 amounted to 299 cases. Meanwhile, in 2013 it declined again to 236 cases. For the dead victims, in 2011 reached a total of 84 people, in 2012 rose to 95 people and declined in 2013 to 78 people. “These data are only recorded in the Tabanan Police jurisdiction. Meanwhile, for Bali region the dead victim indeed reaches 2 people per day,” he said. He added the law enforcement often made by his party was not the best solution. For instance, when taking action related to parking restriction, there was no solution where people could park because the government did not provide parking space. Hence, the government was obliged to provide a safe and comfortable parking space. “So, if there are facilities and people remain to violate it, surely they will realize it,” he said. Related to facilities and road infrastructure, he added, his party had deployed 80 personnel at the black spots. Unfortunately, the
accident remained to occur due to bad condition of the road. For example, a recent traffic accident caused three victims to be run over by a truck. “Due to damaged roads and a motorist reduced its speed, while a truck with heavy freight behind it experienced a brake tension. So, the motorist was then hit by the truck,” he said. Finally, it was related to the matter of vehicle eligibility. He considered it had something to do with the upstream and downstream issues. In other words, the road in the area of Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung and Denpasar was passed through by vehicles from Java, Jakarta, Surabaya and Lombok. When passing in Bali, they had been exhausted, hauled excessive tonnage and the vehicles were unfit to be used on the road and had brake tension. “Some of the accidents occurred in Bali were caused by such factors,” he added. Meanwhile, the academician I Putu Sarjana also admitted to be deeply concerned and sad to know the number of accidents in Bali. He said there were two major substances becoming the problem. Firstly, the victim in the accident was dominated by students and then the drivers. “The two roots of the problem are very extraordinary and must be resolved soon,” he said. The concerns to students with the above mentioned assumption,
namely the arrogance, he considered the children a connoisseur. In other words, they wanted to enjoy the pleasure of riding a motorcycle. They never thought about the risk to themselves and others due to the enjoyment of driving a motorcycle. Actually this issue was something classic because there was no empathy for them to love themselves. “Actually, the empathy must also come from parents of students and their milieu,” he said. To that end, he said the participation of parents was very important. In terms of line, he also considered it inappropriate if the Gilimanuk-Denpasar-Padangbai line was passed through by large trucks. The government should look for alternative such as the line of Gilimanuk-SingarajaKarangasem. “If the driver protests due to long lane, yes it is a risk to be passed through. Moreover, it mostly engages business people,” he explained. When viewed from the road structure, if the tonnage was only seven tons, then the excess should be unloaded. The state court in Hannover cleared Wulff of illegally accepting favors, news agency dpa reported. Wulff was once a deputy leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party and was her choice for the largely ceremonial role of president; his resignation less than two years into a five-year term was an embarrassment to the German leader. He quit when prosecutors asked Parliament to lift his immunity in February 2012 so that they could start a formal investigation. Wulff had faced a barrage of corruption allegations stemming from his time as governor of the state of Lower Saxony before he became president in 2010. The charges that went to trial related specifically to some 720 euros ($990) in hotel and entertainment costs allegedly paid by German film producer David Groenewold for Wulff and his family during a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich in 2008. WASHINGTON — U.S. banks’ earnings rose 17 percent in the October-December quarter from a year earlier, as losses on loans fell to a seven-year low and banks set aside less to cover losses as well as legal costs. The data provides fresh evidence of the banking industry’s sustained recovery more than five years after the financial crisis struck. Still, the government says banks continue to have difficulty increasing revenues, and are relying on setting aside less for loan losses to boost earnings. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reported Wednesday that the banking industry earned $40.3 billion in the final quarter of 2013, up from $34.4 billion in the same period in 2012. For all of 2013, bank earnings increased 9.6 percent to what the agency calls a record annual level of $154.7 billion. It exceeded the previous record earnings of $145.2 billion in 2006. The number of banks on the FDIC’s “problem” list fell to 467 in the final quarter of 2013 from 515 in the third quarter. Banks’ losses on loans dropped 36.7 percent to $11.7 billion, the lowest level for a fourth quarter since 2006, the FDIC said. The largest decline came in home mortgages, which posted a 57.7 percent drop in losses. FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said the latest results showed “a continuation of the recovery in the banking industry.” At the same time, he said, the industry still faces challenges including only modest growth in lending, narrow profit margins and a decline in mortgage refinancing business as long-term interest rates have risen. Bank’s lending increased modestly in the fourth quarter, as it has in recent periods. Total loan balances increased by $90.9 billion, or 1.2 percent, from the third quarter of 2013, with credit card loans marking a seasonal increase of 2.1 percent. Community banks continued to post significant lending to small businesses, accounting for 46 percent of the industry’s loans to small farms and businesses, the FDIC said. James Chessen, chief economist at the American Bankers Association, said lending growth is expected to be strong this year, with loans to individuals increasing about 7 percent and business loans rising around 8 percent. “Banks are a reflection of the economy,” Chessen said in a statement. “Demand for credit will grow as new jobs are created, incomes rise and business confidence returns.” Banks with assets exceeding $10 billion drove the bulk of the earnings growth in the October-December period. While they make up just 1.5 percent of U.S. banks, they accounted for about 82 percent of industry earnings. Those banks include Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. Most of them have recovered with help from federal bailout money during the financial crisis and record-low borrowing rates. Last year, the number of bank failures slowed to 24, still more than normal. In a strong economy, an average of four or five banks close annually. But failures were down sharply from 51 in 2012, 92 in 2011 and 157 in 2010 — the most in one year since the height of the savings and loan crisis in 1992. In the fourth quarter, the decline in bank failures allowed the deposit insurance fund to continue to strengthen. The fund, which turned from deficit to positive in the second quarter of 2011, had a $47.2 billion balance as of Dec. 31, according to the FDIC. That compares with $40.7 billion at the end of September. The FDIC, created during the Great Depression to ensure bank deposits, monitors and examines the financial condition of U.S. banks. The agency guarantees bank deposits up to $250,000 per account. Apart from its deposit insurance fund, the FDIC also has tens of billions of dollars in reserves.

TABANAN - Aside from having trinity temples, the Ole Customary Village, Marga Dauh Puri, Marga Subdistrict, Tabanan, also has an old temple standing amidst the local rice fields. Since many decades ago, the temple ever did not have supporting devotees because it was left by residents in the vicinity. However, this year the temple is restored where the inauguration along with the anniversary ritual was held on Buda Wage Klawu. Based on a story of word to mouth, the Sengawang Temple or also known as Dalem Sengawang Temple poses a temple standing in the middle of an area called Sengawang hamlet formerly inhabited just by nine people. It is said that once upon a time there was an internal conflict in the royal family of Perean Kingdom so the king left the palace with a pregnant wife. They did not know where to go. At dawn, they heard the sound of roosters. Afterward, the king was attempting to look for the source of sound. In fact, it was from the Sengawang hamlet. At that hamlet, the king asked for a political asylum or protection. The hamlet then established a kingdom at Marga, where previously it was a forest. Residents of Sengawang hamlet were then appointed the guards and subject of the kingdom. Allegedly, it happened during the era of Udayana Kingdom. A local leader doubling as former chief of Ole Hamlet, Wayan Gerda,
told that due to a fight between the local residents and those from the surrounding villages that looked for help to Mengwi, the Sengawan residents moved northwardly. Later, the areas were known as the hamlet of Bun, Samuan, Adeng, and Ole. Having been left by all residents, the Sengawang Temple did not have supporting devotees. Nevertheless, the temple was constantly believed to have sacredness and uniqueness. It was considered to nurture the subak existing in the surrounding area. Even, the temple was always considered to have given a blessing of fertility to rice fields in the vicinity. A farmer of Subak Sengawang, Wayan Sumajaya, once heard about various myths at issue related to the temple. Once upon a time, almost all the subak territories in Marga and Tunjuk area were attacked by rats. Paddy plants at Subak Sengawang were not attacked by those rats. So since then, all residents at Ole customary village believed that

The airline has struggled on international routes and its dominance on Australian domestic routes has been eroded. To bind the loyalty, he was married to the daughter of Cokorda Agung Mengwi. Before becoming an independent kingdom, Blambangan belonged to the dominion of Bali. Mengwi Kingdom once ruled this region. Meanwhile, the endeavor of Mataram Sultanate to conquest the Blambangan was never successful. That’s why the Blambangan (and Banyuwangi in general) never belonged to the Central Javanese culture. So far, the region has quite different variety of language from the standard Javanese language. Hundreds of people marched on the streets of this western Mexico city on Wednesday demanding that Mexican authorities free the boss of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel. Many said he provides needed jobs in poor mountain areas. Norteno musicians played trumpets while high school students in uniforms held up signs reading “We want Chapo free” and “We Love Chapo” as they paraded in Culiacan, state capital of Sinaloa state, which is the cartel’s bastion. Demonstrators also said they opposed any attempt to extradite Guzman to the U.S., where he faces several drug-trafficking charges in different states. Police officers tried to scatter the protest, and a few of the demonstrators began throwing water bottles at them as the march broke up. Officers responded with tear gas and took some protesters into custody. “We support Chapo Guzman because he is the one who gives us jobs and helps out in the mountains,” said Pedro Ramirez, who said he traveled
in a group of 300 from Badiraguato, a town in the Sierra Madre where Guzman was born poor 56 years ago. It was a rare display even in a country where drug lords inspire folk songs and books and are looked up to by young men in rural areas. In December 2010, about 100 people marched through the state capital of Michoacan to show support for the chief of La Familia cartel, who had just been killed during two days of battles with federal police. Wednesday’s relatively large turnout may have to do with the uncertainty felt by Sinaloans over the future of the multibillion-dollar illegal drug business, which provides a boost for their agricultural state. MOSCOW - Ukraine’s Viktor Yanukovich said on Thursday he was still the legitimate president of his country and that people in its southeastern and southern regions would never accept the “lawlessness” brought by leaders chosen by a mob. Russian news agencies quoted a statement by Yanukovich as saying he had asked Moscow to guarantee his personal safety. The statement could not be independently verified and it was not clear where Yanukovich was, although some media groups have suggested he is in Moscow after fleeing Ukraine, where he was toppled by opposition forces at the weekend. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said he had no information and could not comment on the statement. “I, Viktor Fedorovich Yanukovich appeal to the people of Ukraine. As before I still consider myself to be the lawful head of the Ukrainian state, chosen freely by the will of the Ukrainian people,” he was quoted as saying. “Now it is becoming clear that the people in southeastern Ukraine and in Crimea do not accept the power vacuum and complete lawlessness in the country, when the heads of ministries are appointed by the mob.” “On the streets of many cities of our country there is an orgy of extremism,” he said, adding that he and his closest aides had been threatened physically. “I have to ask the Russian authorities to provide me with personal safety from the actions

Moscow granted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych protection “on the territory of Russia,” shortly after the fugitive leader sought help from the Kremlin, according to an official quoted by Russian news agencies. Meanwhile, a respected Russian news organization reported that Yanukovych was seen in a Moscow hotel and was now staying in a Kremlin sanatorium just outside the city. “I have to ask Russia to ensure
my personal safety from extremists,” Yanukovych said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies on Thursday. Shortly after, the same three Russian news agencies quoted an unnamed Russian official saying that Yanukovych’s request for protection “was satisfied on the territory of Russia.” Yanukovych, who fled from Ukraine’s capital Kiev last week, said in the Thursday statement that he still considers himself to be the legitimate leader. RBK reported Wednesday evening that Yanukovych was staying at the Barvikha sanatorium, which is run by the presidential administration’s property department. The spokesman for this department, Viktor Khrekov, told The Associated Press on Thursday that he has no information about this. The RBK report was impossible to confirm, but security at the Ukraina Hotel was unusually heavy late Wednesday, with police watching from parked vehicles outside and guards posted throughout the lobby. Some of Yanukovych’s allies, also reported to have been at the hotel, may have still been there.

JAKARTA - Province at the heart of a Southeast Asian smog crisis last year has declared a state of emergency after being blanketed in thick haze from forest fires, officials said Thursday. Thousands have fallen ill, transport has been disrupted and schools closed after days of fires in Riau province on Sumatra island, where blazes are deliberately lit every year to clear land for palm oil and wood pulp plantations. More than two dozen people suspected of starting fires in rainforest and peatland have so far been arrested, said
national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Haze from fires on Sumatra is an annual problem in Southeast Asia, but last June Singapore and Malaysia were cloaked in the worst smog for more than a decade. While some haze was detected in the two neighbouring countries in
recent days, the air quality was mostly good. Declaring an emergency allows Riau to seek help in tackling the blazes from the central government, and Nugroho said aircraft were preparing to drop water on fires and carry out “cloud-seeding” to chemically induce rain.
“The disaster agency is preparing aeroplanes and helicopters to carry out water-bombing of the fires,” he said. More than 25,000 people have fallen ill in recent days due to high air pollution, with most suffering respiratory tract infections, said Riau disaster chief Said Saqlul Amri. The emergency status means health centres must see patients free of charge, he said. Local media reported that some flights to Riau had been cancelled this
week while others were diverted, and schools were closed in some parts of the province. Last year’s fires strained ties between Indonesia and its neighbours, prompting an apology from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Malaysia and Singapore at the height of the crisis. Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of palm oil -- which is found in everyday grocery items, such as shampoo and shaving gel -- and Riau is the country’s main palm oil hub.

Former Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve is taking a crack at winning another Indianapolis 500 by joining Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to race in the famed event he won in 1995, the team announced on Wednesday. Villeneuve, 42, left the circuit after winning his first Indy 500 and the CART championship that year and has not started an IndyCar race since. “We started talking not long ago, actually a few weeks ago,” said the Canadian of the May 25 race. “It all went fast. “The discussions happened at the right time because I’d been watching the IndyCars last year, and it looked extremely exciting with the new cars, to the point where I was angry and jealous that I wasn’t racing. So that got me going again.” The Quebec native left for F1 after his triumphant 1995 season and competed from 1996 through 2006, winning the world championship in 1997. Villeneuve moved to stock cars in 2007 and has run in a variety of series including NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Le Mans as well as sports cars. Villeneuve said the new-style IndyCars and the aggressive racing style got him itching to return. “When I started seeing that last year, I started getting excited again, just because the racing was amazing, the cars looked fast and aggressive, it looked hard on the drivers, and the battles were fierce, which is all what I love about racing,” he said.

Former Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve is taking a crack at winning another Indianapolis 500 by joining Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to race in the famed event he won in 1995, the team announced on Wednesday. Villeneuve, 42, left the circuit after winning his first Indy 500 and the CART championship that year and has not started an IndyCar race since. “We started talking not long ago, actually a few weeks ago,” said the Canadian of the May 25 race. “It all went fast. “The discussions happened at the right time because I’d been watching the IndyCars last year, and it looked extremely exciting with the new cars, to the point where I was angry and jealous that I wasn’t racing. So that got me going again.” The Quebec native left for F1 after his triumphant 1995 season and competed from 1996 through 2006, winning the world championship in 1997. Villeneuve moved to stock cars in 2007 and has run in a variety of series including NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Le Mans as well as sports cars. CULIACAN, Mexico — Not everyone is happy over the capture of drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Hundreds of people marched on the streets of this western Mexico city on Wednesday demanding that Mexican authorities free the boss of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel. Many said he provides needed jobs in poor mountain areas. Norteno musicians played trumpets while high school students in uniforms held up signs reading “We want Chapo free” and “We Love Chapo” as they paraded in Culiacan, state capital of Sinaloa state, which is the cartel’s bastion. Demonstrators also said they opposed any attempt to extradite Guzman to the U.S., where he faces several drug-trafficking charges in different states. Police officers tried to scatter the protest, and a few of the demonstrators began throwing water bottles at them as the march broke up. Officers responded with tear gas and took some protesters into custody. “We support Chapo Guzman because he is the one who gives us jobs and helps out in the mountains,” said Pedro Ramirez, who said he traveled
in a group of 300 from Badiraguato, a town in the Sierra Madre where Guzman was born poor 56 years ago. It was a rare display even in a country where drug lords inspire folk songs and books and are looked up to by young men in rural areas. In December 2010, about 100 people marched through the state capital of Michoacan to show support for the chief of La Familia cartel, who had just been killed during two days of battles with federal police. Wednesday’s relatively large turnout may have to do with the uncertainty felt by Sinaloans over the future of the multibillion-dollar illegal drug business, which provides a boost for their agricultural state. Experts say Guzman’s arrest won’t slow the Sinaloa cartel, but many people are anxious the area’s economy may be disrupted. “El Chapo” is widely considered the world’s most powerful drug lord. In rulings Tuesday, two federal judges said he will have to stand trial on separate drug-trafficking and organizedcrime charges in Mexico. MOSCOW - Ukraine’s Viktor Yanukovich said on Thursday he was still the legitimate president of his country and that people in its southeastern and southern regions would never accept the “lawlessness” brought by leaders chosen by a mob. Russian news agencies quoted a statement by Yanukovich as saying he had asked Moscow to guarantee his personal safety. The statement could not be independently verified and it was not clear where Yanukovich was, although some media groups have suggested he is in Moscow after fleeing Ukraine, where he was toppled by opposition forces at the weekend. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said he had no information and could not comment on the statement. “I, Viktor Fedorovich Yanukovich appeal to the people of Ukraine. JAKARTA - Province at the heart of a Southeast Asian smog crisis last year has declared a state of emergency after being blanketed in thick haze from forest fires, officials said Thursday. Thousands have fallen ill, transport has been disrupted and schools closed after days of fires in Riau province on Sumatra island, where blazes are deliberately lit every year to clear land for palm oil and wood pulp plantations. More than two dozen people suspected of starting fires in rainforest and peatland have so far been arrested, said
national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Haze from fires on Sumatra is an annual problem in Southeast Asia, but last June Singapore and Malaysia were cloaked in the worst smog for more than a decade. While some haze was detected in the two neighbouring countries in
recent days, the air quality was mostly good. Declaring an emergency allows Riau to seek help in tackling the blazes from the central government, and Nugroho said aircraft were preparing to drop water on fires and carry out “cloud-seeding” to chemically induce rain.
“The disaster agency is preparing aeroplanes and helicopters to carry out water-bombing of the fires,” he said. More than 25,000 people have fallen ill in recent days due to high air pollution, with most suffering respiratory tract infections, said Riau disaster chief Said Saqlul Amri. The emergency status means health centres must see patients free of charge, he said. Local media reported that some flights to Riau had been cancelled this
week while others were diverted, and schools were closed in some parts of the province. Last year’s fires strained ties between Indonesia and its neighbours, prompting an apology from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Malaysia and Singapore at the height of the crisis. Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of palm oil -- which is found in everyday grocery items, such as shampoo and shaving gel -- and Riau is the country’s main palm oil hub.

WASHINGTON — U.S. banks’ earnings rose 17 percent in the October-December quarter from a year earlier, as losses on loans fell to a seven-year low and banks set aside less to cover losses as well as legal costs. The data provides fresh evidence of the banking industry’s sustained recovery more than five years after the financial crisis struck. Still, the government says banks continue to have difficulty increasing revenues, and are relying on setting aside less for loan losses to boost earnings. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reported Wednesday that the banking industry earned $40.3 billion in the final quarter of 2013, up from $34.4 billion in the same period in 2012. For all of 2013, bank earnings increased 9.6 percent to what the agency calls a record annual level of $154.7 billion. It exceeded the previous record earnings of $145.2 billion in 2006. The number of banks on the FDIC’s “problem” list fell to 467 in the final quarter of 2013 from 515 in the third quarter. Banks’ losses on loans dropped 36.7 percent to $11.7 billion, the lowest level for a fourth quarter since 2006, the FDIC said. The largest decline came in home mortgages, which posted a 57.7 percent drop in losses. FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said the latest results showed “a continuation of the recovery in the banking industry.” At the same time, he said, the industry still faces challenges including only modest growth in lending, narrow profit margins and a decline in mortgage refinancing business as long-term interest rates have risen. Bank’s lending increased modestly in the fourth quarter, as it has in recent periods. Total loan balances increased by $90.9 billion, or 1.2 percent, from the third quarter of 2013, with credit card loans marking a seasonal increase of 2.1 percent. Community banks continued to post significant lending to small businesses, accounting for 46 percent of the industry’s loans to small farms and businesses, the FDIC said. James Chessen, chief economist at the American Bankers Association, said lending growth is expected to be strong this year, with loans to individuals increasing about 7 percent and business loans rising around 8 percent. “Banks are a reflection of the economy,” Chessen said in a statement. “Demand for credit will grow as new jobs are created, incomes rise and business confidence returns.” Banks with assets exceeding $10 billion drove the bulk of the earnings growth in the October-December period. While they make up just 1.5 percent of U.S. banks, they accounted for about 82 percent of industry earnings. Those banks include Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co. Most of them have recovered with help from federal bailout money during the financial crisis and record-low borrowing rates. Last year, the number of bank failures slowed to 24, still more than normal. In a strong economy, an average of four or five banks close annually. But failures were down sharply from 51 in 2012, 92 in 2011 and 157 in 2010 — the most in one year since the height of the savings and loan crisis in 1992. In the fourth quarter, the decline in bank failures allowed the deposit insurance fund to continue to strengthen. The fund, which turned from deficit to positive in the second quarter of 2011, had a $47.2 billion balance as of Dec. 31, according to the FDIC. That compares with $40.7 billion at the end of September. The FDIC, created during the Great Depression to ensure bank deposits, monitors and examines the financial condition of U.S. banks. The agency guarantees bank deposits up to $250,000 per account. Apart from its deposit insurance fund, the FDIC also has tens of billions of dollars in reserves.

TABANAN - Aside from having trinity temples, the Ole Customary Village, Marga Dauh Puri, Marga Subdistrict, Tabanan, also has an old temple standing amidst the local rice fields. Since many decades ago, the temple ever did not have supporting devotees because it was left by residents in the vicinity. However, this year the temple is restored where the inauguration along with the anniversary ritual was held on Buda Wage Klawu. Based on a story of word to mouth, the Sengawang Temple or also known as Dalem Sengawang Temple poses a temple standing in the middle of an area called Sengawang hamlet formerly inhabited just by nine people. It is said that once upon a time there was an internal conflict in the royal family of Perean Kingdom so the king left the palace with a pregnant wife. They did not know where to go. At dawn, they heard the sound of roosters. Afterward, the king was attempting to look for the source of sound. In fact, it was from the Sengawang hamlet. At that hamlet, the king asked for a political asylum or protection. The hamlet then established a kingdom at Marga, where previously it was a forest. Residents of Sengawang hamlet were then appointed the guards and subject of the kingdom. Allegedly, it happened during the era of Udayana Kingdom. A local leader doubling as former chief of Ole Hamlet, Wayan Gerda,
told that due to a fight between the local residents and those from the surrounding villages that looked for help to Mengwi, the Sengawan residents moved northwardly. Later, the areas were known as the hamlet of Bun, Samuan, Adeng, and Ole. Having been left by all residents, the Sengawang Temple did not have supporting devotees. Nevertheless, the temple was constantly believed to have sacredness and uniqueness. It was considered to nurture the subak existing in the surrounding area. Even, the temple was always considered to have given a blessing of fertility to rice fields in the vicinity. A farmer of Subak Sengawang, Wayan Sumajaya, once heard about various myths at issue related to the temple. Once upon a time, almost all the subak territories in Marga and Tunjuk area were attacked by rats. Paddy plants at Subak Sengawang were not attacked by those rats. So since then, all residents at Ole customary village believed that

To bind the loyalty, he was married to the daughter of Cokorda Agung Mengwi. Before becoming an independent kingdom, Blambangan belonged to the dominion of Bali. Mengwi Kingdom once ruled this region. Meanwhile, the endeavor of Mataram Sultanate to conquest the Blambangan was never successful. That’s why the Blambangan (and Banyuwangi in general) never belonged to the Central Javanese culture. So far, the region has quite different variety of language from the standard Javanese language. SKorean missionary jailed in North seeks mercy

PYONGYANG, North Korea — North Korea on Thursday presented to the media a South Korean Baptist missionary whom it says was arrested more than four months ago for allegedly trying to establish underground Christian churches in the country. With officials looking on, he said he was sorry for his “anti-state” crimes. In his first public appearance since his arrest, Kim Jung Wook appealed to North Korean authorities to show him mercy by releasing him, and also claimed he had received assistance from South Korea’s intelligence agency.

DENPASAR - Total amount of traffic accident in Bali is increasingly alarming. Even, there has been no appropriate solution that can minimize the number of accident. Various attempts have been made by related parties such as the Directorate of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police and its ranks as well as the government to diminish the number of accidents. For example, it is made through socialization by visiting schools, installation of appealing banners and empowering safety riding and law enforcement. However, such efforts are still considered to give less maximal results. From the data of the Directorate of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police, the accident rate in Bali reaches around 2,000 cases each year. Even, the death toll reaches 2 people per day. So, it can be said the case of traffic accident in Bali is the second killing machine after tsunami. This matter was revealed when the Bali Post daily newspaper held a discussion at Warung 63 on Jalan Veteran Denpasar, Wednesday (Feb 26). The discussion invited police authority, academician, the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) for Bali Region and Jasa Raharja Insurance. According to the Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto EP, when speaking about traffic accident, his party was very concern about the issue. However, to resolve the traffic accident and then find its solution could not be made partially. In other words, it did not only involve police, transportation agencies, provincial government and the central government itself. However, all components should be involved to prevent the number of accidents. From the data existing in the
Tabanan Police jurisdiction, quantitatively and qualitatively, during the period of 2011 to 2012 it had showed a decline in the number of accident. In 2011, the traffic accident totally reached 326 cases, while in 2012 amounted to 299 cases. Meanwhile, in 2013 it declined again to 236 cases. For the dead victims, in 2011 reached a total of 84 people, in 2012 rose to 95 people and declined in 2013 to 78 people. “These data are only recorded in the Tabanan Police jurisdiction. Meanwhile, for Bali region the dead victim indeed reaches 2 people per day,” he said. For the jurisdiction of Tabanan Police, his party had made various efforts because it did not want the victim to increase. From the data, Chief Dekananto deeply concerned with the condition. Human error, he said, was related to many motorists that did not know the condition of roads in Tabanan. Likewise, when passing at the path, the riders had been exhausted. In addition, the existing traffic signs were often violated. For example, there was prohibition to overtake, but motorists forced to overtake. “Well, this case is most frequently happens,” he said. He added the law enforcement often made by his party was not the best solution. For instance, when taking action related to parking restriction, there was no solution where people could park because the government did not provide parking space. Hence, the government was obliged to provide a safe and comfortable parking space. “So, if there are facilities and people remain to violate it, surely they will realize it,” he said. Related to facilities and road infrastructure, he added, his party had deployed 80 personnel at the black spots. Unfortunately, the
accident remained to occur due to bad condition of the road. For example, a recent traffic accident caused three victims to be run over by a truck. “Due to damaged roads and a motorist reduced its speed, while a truck with heavy freight behind it experienced a brake tension. So, the motorist was then hit by the truck,” he said. Finally, it was related to the matter of vehicle eligibility. He considered it had something to do with the upstream and downstream issues. In other words, the road in the area of Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung and Denpasar was passed through by vehicles from Java, Jakarta, Surabaya and Lombok. When passing in Bali, they had been exhausted, hauled excessive tonnage and the vehicles were unfit to be used on the road and had brake tension. “Some of the accidents occurred in Bali were caused by such factors,” he added. Meanwhile, the academician I Putu Sarjana also admitted to be deeply concerned and sad to know the number of accidents in Bali. He said there were two major substances becoming the problem. Firstly, the victim in the accident was dominated by students and then the drivers. “The two roots of the problem are very extraordinary and must be resolved soon,” he said. The concerns to students with the above mentioned assumption,
namely the arrogance, he considered the children a connoisseur. In other words, they wanted to enjoy the pleasure of riding a motorcycle. They never thought about the risk to themselves and others due to the enjoyment of driving a motorcycle. Actually this issue was something classic because there was no empathy for them to love themselves. “Actually, the empathy must also come from parents of students and their milieu,” he said. To that end, he said the participation of parents was very important. In terms of line, he also considered it inappropriate if the Gilimanuk-Denpasar-Padangbai line was passed through by large trucks. The government should look for alternative such as the line of Gilimanuk-SingarajaKarangasem. “If the driver protests due to long lane, yes it is a risk to be passed through. Moreover, it mostly engages business people,” he explained. When viewed from the road structure, if the tonnage was only seven tons, then the excess should be unloaded. Well, it was also one of the solutions and shock therapies for them. “How many tons is the feasibility of the road? BERLIN — Germany’s former president, Christian Wulff, was acquitted Thursday of corruption charges in a case that prompted his resignation two years ago. The state court in Hannover cleared Wulff of illegally accepting favors, news agency dpa reported. Wulff was once a deputy leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party and was her choice for the largely ceremonial role of president; his resignation less than two years into a five-year term was an embarrassment to the German leader. He quit when prosecutors asked Parliament to lift his immunity in February 2012 so that they could start a formal investigation. Wulff had faced a barrage of corruption allegations stemming from his time as governor of the state of Lower Saxony before he became president in 2010. The charges that went to trial related specifically to some 720 euros ($990) in hotel and entertainment costs allegedly paid by German film producer David Groenewold for Wulff and his family during a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich in 2008. PARIS — The first full day of Paris’ frenzied ready-to-wear shows mixed up iconic fashion veterans like Dries Van Noten with a whole new sort of fashion player: H&M. It may be a tricky ride ahead for the main street shop, which is now attempting to walk the snooty high fashion runway. Yet the company, which has still not been allowed on the official Fashion Week calendar, put on a buzzy show-spectacle replete with strobe lights, plasma screens and Jessica Alba which may go some way in shutting up the detractors — at least until next season. DRIES VAN NOTEN IS BOLD AS BRASS
Dries Van Noten infused what he called a “glimmer of Glam” with the optical lines of famed British artist Bridget Riley. The result was a collection that was much bolder than usual, but with some beautiful statements. Glam-rock-style silver wave patterns made the silhouette near-invisible and while black stripes against strips of printed flowers that played optically with two and three-dimensions. Strips of floral prints sometimes looked like camouflage, the designer’s signature, inset like shards on a skirt below an oversize or daintily fitting top. Van Noten, again, shows he is Paris Fashion Week’s master of illusion. At times, however, some of the thick swirling patterns ended up looking simply a bit too brash and might stop traffic for the wrong reasons. This was the case, for instance, on one otherwise cool anachronistic Regency jacket in with contemporary black-beige lines, and, elsewhere, in wide swirls of contrasting vermillion and navy. profits only,” he explained. This former Dean of the Tourism Faculty, Udayana University, added that the current tourism development had gone wrong. According to him, the development of tourism had much ignored the three tourism philosophies, namely the logics, ethics and aesthetics. “Related to the logics, we have to think whether it is right or wrong, which one is right in accordance with the assessment. In terms of ethics, it is related to the good or bad, we have to choose the good one. In terms of the aesthetics, it is related to beauty or beast, we have to choose beauty. For instance, the toll road now looks beautiful. If there will be reclamation and high-rise buildings, especially in the mangrove forest, and suppose the Grand Forest Park (Tahura) gets permission to build a restaurant, it will look like Jakarta and nothing will look beautiful,” he said. The culverts under the area of Tegal Badeng Barat fishery industrial area begin to disintegrate as seen in the west of Pengambengan pier. At least, the culvert along 100 meters mounted to protect the land owned by residents has been destroyed. One of the local residents said the impact of abrasion began to emerge after the construction of the Pengambengan pier. The pier jutted into the sea was alleged to have changed the direction of the ocean currents. Mrs. Ati, a resident of Puana hamlet, said the sea waves were getting stronger, particularly to the west. Not to mention when the high tides, the house of residents was submerged in the sea water. Similar condition was also seen on the east side of the pier. A number of
residents had become the victims of abrasion, including the Naval Post that was previously located away on the beach, but had been exhausted. Residents told if the impact of abrasion around the harbor was indeed much slower compared to other regions like Cupel and Pebuahan. They hoped it could be handled by the government such as by building revetment. Some factories in the east side of the harbor had also been threatened by abrasion. Some of them decided to make their own revetment by stones to protect the plant. Meanwhile, the land of residents who were unable to make revetment was more severely affected. As in the border of the Pengambengan Pier and coastal areas of Cupel looked to have been destroyed. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

On his desk, on the walls, in the filing cabinets and in every corner of Rithy Panh’s dimly lit office are memories of his country’s greatest tragedy. Probing the painful past started as a coping mechanism for Panh and evolved into a career. For the past two and a half decades, Panh has made movies that he considers his duty as a survivor, and his debt to the dead. highly original film in which the starring roles are played by static clay figures. It’s also the first Cambodian film to be nominated for an Academy Award, and could win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars this weekend. The 51-year-old filmmaker said he makes movies because “I had to find a way to work with my memories.” “When you survive a genocide, it’s like you’ve been radiated by a nuclear bomb,” Panh said during an interview at his Phnom Penh office, which is inside a film preservation center that he runs. “It’s like you’ve been killed once already, and you come back with death inside of you.” Many of Pahn’s movies have been documentaries that have earned critical acclaim but limited commercial success. He has interviewed the regime’s former torturers, prison guards and survivors as part of his conviction that Cambodia must face its past to build a better future. “The Missing Picture” is a poetic and

SANTA MONICA, California — A California jury has ordered Lisa Kudrow to pay her former manager $1.6 million in residuals from her work on “Friends.” The Los Angeles County Superior Court jury returned its verdict Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by Scott Howard. He claimed he had an oral agreement with the actress and was owed a percentage of her earnings on the hit NBC sitcom. Kudrow contended that she had already paid Howard more than $11 million before they parted ways in 2007. Kudrow’s attorney, Gerald Sauer, says the verdict will be appealed. City News Service says testimony during the trial indicated that Kudrow was earning more than $1 million per episode by the end of the show’s run. Kudrow starred on “Friends” from 1994 to 2004.

It was revealed by the lecturer of the Graduate School of Economics, Udayana University, Dr. Gede Sudjana Budhi, when met in Denpasar. He said the people of Bali were then marginalized as a result of the unstoppable invasion of big capitalists. The development of Bali should be returned to the concept of holistic human, where the government protected its people. “The concept of development must be returned to the model as implemented during the administration of Governor Ida Bagus Mantra by developing Bali with a holistic human, where the inefficient craftsmen and entrepreneurs were protected such as in Kuta. Large entrepreneurs were not allowed to enter,” he said.
Such efforts, said Sudjana, aimed to give the opportunity to people in order they had time to learn so they were ready to compete in the free market. “Such a policy no longer exists today. For instance, more than 60 percent of craftsmen in Tegallalang have shifted their profession to breeder because they lacked of order as a result of role played by greater capital,” he said. According to him, the government should build the community-base business as having been widely applied in a number of developing countries.
