Awkward fits of laughter? Probably all of the above. What is certain is that a conflu-

MIAMI - A bouncer at a Florida bar has sued Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter for attacking and choking him, labeling the star “nothing more than a backstreet thug.” Skylar Carden, 21, filed the lawsuit Monday in a court in the Florida Keys, alleging Carter caused “bodily injury, mental anguish, pain and suffering,” attorney Mark DiCowden told AFP. Carter was arrested on January 13 after he and a friend were escorted, drunk, by security personnel outside Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West. The singer was originally shown the door due to his “unruly and disrespectful” behavior, but he then became aggressive, beating and briefly choking Carden, according to the lawsuit. In court, Carter pleaded not guilty and was released on $1,500 bail. He broke his silence via a message on Twitter over the weekend. “I am human and at times it can be a struggle to balance a healthy lifestyle. I’m not perfect and for that I am sorry,” he wrote. “When we fall we have to get up and keep on walking. I hope

you stay by my side and continue to walk with me.” But Carden’s lawyer said that regardless of Carter’s celebrity status, the singer should respect other people’s rights, just like everyone else. “Nick Carter has shown the world that he is nothing more than a backstreet thug,” DiCowden wrote. “Carter’s backhanded apology in the form of a tweet was a crude attempt to control public relations and did nothing to address his remorse for the harm he caused Carden. “No amount of fame or fortune justifies Carter’s shameful and outrageous conduct. ForBALI coordinator, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, said that he received a written invitation from the Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) on Friday (Jan. 15), that included the Amdal documents regarding the Benoa Bay revitalization action plan and sea sand mining. “Actually it is a fairly difficult document to sift through. Is two weeks enough time? I don’t think it is. But the problem is that we have no choice but to accept it,” said Gendo. He also said that many things in the Amdal document still raise questions -primarily with regards to the magnitude of project’s scope. Many things seem odd and should be questioned during the meeting for the Amdal test. “However, we cannot say exactly how to do this now because we are still learning and exploring the documents,” Gendo explained. Most importantly, he said, the different communities involved, need to begin to address the issues objectively and cannot afford to remain silent. Addressing the issues must

continue to be carried out though peaceful means and people need to be involved in the environmental policy making process - especially with mega-projects like this reclamation plan, he said. Gendo asserted that people should be informed about the details of project developments particularly the Amdal, because this project has a big impact on the future of Bali. The future of the communities in the area of Benoa Bay is at stake also the interests of Balinese people as a whole. The investors in the Benoa Bay project not openly plan to create islands covering an area of some 700 hectares, but they also plan to build a variety if accommodations ranging from apartments, condotel, and villas, all the way up to four- and five-star hotels, not to mention the manpower that this project would absorb; 60 percent local workers and 40 percent non-local workers. She also emphasized that the local community needs to be seriously engaged in environmental conservation on an ongoing basis. Only then, she said, will the government be willing to support and facilitate such efforts. “We would welcome and facilitate any proposal requesting seedlings, for example,” said Manik. Headman of South Batur, I Gede Sarjana, explained that in addition to acting as a buffer for springs in the surrounding woods, bamboo can also be used for the creation of ritual paraphernalia such as the structures needed for cremation ceremonies. “Bamboo

is very important for Balinese people,” said Sarjana. Masem Dwi Tirta’s forest, that is rife with pine trees, was formerly managed by the central government. However, in 2015 there was a request made to have the forest be managed by the local village. “At the end of last year, the official recommendation was issued and we were asked to complete certain requirements. Hopefully the handover of authority will happen soon,” said Sarjana. Once the village in in charge of managing the forest, they plan to plant several types of plants and tress and use parts of the forest for agro-tourism. “Obviously, we will use the forest in a sustainable manner,” he added. Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House of Representatives, I Komang Carles, said that he hopes that environmental conservation efforts are not simply undertaken

The pillars are made from fragrant high quality mango wood. These 12 pillars are carved with Buleleng style motifs and the braces of the pillars are decorated with beautiful gold ornaments. Eight of the pillars of the soka roras are used to frame two beds while the area between the remaining four pillars is used to store a variety of objects. A clay table is placed in the centre of each house. The walls of these houses are made of clay with zinc sheet roofs. “Most of these houses are located northeast of local village temple, indicating that this is where the village was first established before it spread out to other areas. Today, only a few of these houses remain but they are carefully maintained to ensure that this heritage does not disappear,” Suardana. In the past almost all residents of Tigawsa cultivated gogo rice paddy and the yields were so great that almost every home had a jineng (rice granary). However clive has be-

Although agricultural activities have moved away from providing basic staples towards the selling of commodities, the ability of local residents to create bamboo crafts remains a potential means of earning a living. Various crafts, including sokasi (used for carrying oblations) of a variety of sizes, building materials and others can be made here. Nobody knows for sure when people in Tigawasa started making bamboo crafts as the only evidence of this craft making is the skills that the villagers have. with a variety of sizes, bamboo wall for building materials, and others. Many suspect that bamboo weaving has been practiced in this village since the Stone Age because all of the traditional houses have Bali reed bamboo (used for weaving), planted nearby. “Woven bamboo crafts has become a source of income of all our residents. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Zika virus, a wolf in sheep’s clothing

PARIS - The world’s latest health scare is a seemingly minor illness that carries a killer wrapped inside: Zika, the mosquitoborne virus sweeping Latin America, usually lasts less than a week, except when it derails a whole life. Zika, which resembles a light case of the flu, is often so mild that people don’t realize they have it. But health officials in Latin America say the tropical fever is linked to neurological problems and a surge in microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with abnormally small heads. The defect can cause brain damage and death. The outbreak has led authorities in some countries to urge couples not to get pregnant, while the US

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has warned pregnant women to avoid traveling to 22 affected countries. The virus was first identified in a monkey in Africa in 1947. Its name comes from a forest in Uganda where the first infected rhesus monkeys were found. Within several years the virus had jumped to humans in Uganda and Tanzania, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Like dengue fever and chikun-

gunya, two similar diseases, Zika is transmitted by mosquito species found in tropical and sub-tropical regions: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, or tiger mosquitoes. In 70 to 80 percent of cases, the disease goes unnoticed. The symptoms resemble a mild case of the flu -- headache, muscle and joint pain, and mild fever -- plus a rash. Symptoms usually last two to seven days. The disease is suspected of causing two serious complications: neurological problems and birth defects in babies born to infected women. But while there appears to be a connection with Zika, researchers have not definitively confirmed

a causal link. The main neurological complication is Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, causing weakness and sometimes paralysis. The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, so prevention entails fighting mosquitoes and avoiding contact with them. Authorities have responded to the outbreak by fumigating and cleaning up the standing water where mosquitoes breed. Authorities in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Jamaica have advised couples to avoid pregnancy for the time being. In Brazil, authorities have announced a crackdown on mosquito breeding grounds ahead of the Olympics, which will bring hundreds of thousands of travelers from around the world to Rio de Janeiro in August. The virus was first reported in Africa, Asia and the Pacific before leaping to the Americas last year. It is now spreading locally in some 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries, as far north as Mexico. Brazil has been the hardest hit. Travelers have also brought it back to the US states of Florida, Hawaii and New York. A woman in Hawaii gave birth to a baby with microcephaly after traveling to Brazil. So far there have been no locally transmitted US cases reported, though the Aedes aegypti mosquito’s habitat stretches into the United States. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) says on its website that “there is no evidence of transmission (of) Zika virus in Europe to date and imported cases are rare.” (afp)

Nano-thin pressure sensor could aid breast cancer exams TOKYO - Super-thin bendable sensors developed by Japanese and US scientists could someday be used in special gloves to detect breast lumps and make a digital record of the exam, the scientists said in a report. The nanofibre sensors are as thin as 3.4 micrometres -- less than half the thickness of kitchen wrap -- according to research published in the online version of British science magazine Nature Nanotechnology. “Healthcare practitioners may one day be able to physically screen for breast cancer using pres-

sure-sensitive rubber gloves to detect tumours,” the researchers said in a statement before the publication. A square sheet 4.8 by 4.8 centimetres (1.9 inches) in size has 144 locations that can measure pressure, said the research teams led by Tokyo University professor Takao Someya and Harvard University’s Zhigang Suo. The sheet is so flexible it can detect pressure changes accurately even when twisted like cloth -- a development claimed as a global first.

“Sensitive human fingers of a veteran doctor may be able to find a small tumour, but such perceived sensation cannot be measured,” Someya told AFP Monday. But digitisation of the sensations means that they could be shared with other doctors who could theoretically experience the same sensations as the physician who performed the examination, he said. Many researchers are developing flexible pressure sensors but they are vulnerable when bent and twisted, which makes it difficult to

detect pressure changes accurately, the Tokyo University and Harvard researchers say. The nanofibre pressure sensor they have developed can be bent over a radius of as small as 80 micrometres -- “equivalent to just twice the width of a human hair” -- they say. When tested on an artificial blood vessel, the sheet successfully detected “small pressure changes and speed of pressure propagation”, Sungwon Lee, a leading researcher in Someya’s team, said in the statement.

Someya stressed that the development would one day enable the equivalent of medical palpation -- examining a patient by physical touch -- by doctors in different locations from the patient. “The new sensor would make it possible to measure the human sensation so that findings by palpation could even be shared remotely,” he said. “In the future, we would be able to record and make tangible certain sensations that can only be perceived by an experienced doctor.” (afp)

“Flying squad” of BSMP rescue dugong calf

GIANYAR - A “flying squad” consisting of a marine mammal veterinarian and animal care staff from Bali Safari & Marine Park (BSMP) and the Batang Dolphin Center recently responded to an urgent call for assistance from the Indonesian Government. The team flew at just one day notice to a seaside resort in the Komodo National Park to provide emergency supportive care and rehabilitation to a dugong calf found stranded a few days earlier. The dugong – also known in Indonesia as a duyung or sea cow, is a medium-sized marine mammal. Capable of living up to 75 years - these gentle, docile and shy animals spend their lives in the ocean’s shallows surviving exclusively on a diet of sea grass. In time’s past, the dugong was hunted for its prized flesh, hide and body oils. Today, it is internationally classified as a species vulnerable to extinction, protected under national laws and international treaties. Responding to a request for assistance from the Indonesian Conservation Agency (BKSDA), the “flying squad” formed by veterinarians from BSMP – Dr. Nimal Fernando and Dr.

Kadek Kesuma; BSMP supervisor Nyoman Suartawan; and Sutejo of the Batang Dolphin Center arrived at Kanawa Island resort where a group of vacationing marine biologists from the USA had spent the past three days hand feeding and nurturing a male dugong estimated to be only one-month-old. The Indonesian ’flying squad’ arrived to find the animal with several lacerations caused by encounters with sharp coral and suffering from a lack of mother’s milk. It was presumed to be an orphaned calf, but the details of the mother and whether she had died is not known. Knowing that, statistically, the chances of survival for orphaned dugong calves is small, the team of

dedicated professionals wasted no time and literally “plunged” into their work, spending up to 8 hours a day in the sea , under a makeshift shelter administering a schedule of bottlefeedings using a special formula that they had carried from Bali Safari & Marine Park. Cautiously optimistic, the team of caregivers reports that their patient is now mixing a diet of formula milk with sea grass. Monitoring the animals input and output, the team was further encouraged by indications that the dugong’s alimentary tract was functioning normally. WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - Washington will need several more days to return to normal after a weekend blizzard dropped more than 2 feet (60 cm) of snow along the U.S. East Coast, likely causing billions of dollars in damage and killing more than 30 people. Bomb threat has no impact on tourist visits to Gianyar

GIANYAR – The bomb threat in Bali that followed the explosion and shooting incidents in Thamrin, Jakarta not long time ago, has had no impact on the number of tourist visiting Gianyar -including Ubud, said Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta on Tuesday. Brahmanta did concede that there were less tourist visiting Gianyar in January, compared to December, but he added that is a common trend every year and that the next peak season for tourism starts in June. “This time of year is known as the low season with hotel and villa occupancy rates averaging about 20 -30 percent,” he explained. Overall, 2015 saw significant increases in the number of tourist visiting Gianyar, with 2.8 million visitors, whereas the target for

2015 was only 2.5 million, said Brahmanta. Large numbers of tourist visited five main tourist destinations that are managed by the government of Gianyar: Goa Gajah, Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring, Yeh Pulu, Gunung Kawi Sebatu and Tirta Empul Tampaksiring. Tirta Empul showed an excellent ability to draw visitors with 25 percent of all visitors paying a visit to this temple. Goa Gajah and Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring were also very popular showing higher increases in

visitor numbers than the other sites. “New tourist destinations such as Gajah Taro also showed increases in the number of both domestic and foreign visitors,” added Brahmanta. The security measures taken by the ranks of the Gianyar Police were also lauded as important efforts towards ensuring that Bali’s security is comparable to places like Singapore, Europe and America. “Security is very good. In Ubud, for instance, I see a number of officers in complete uniform, and more intensive patrolling and more security posts. JAKARTA - Indonesia has relocated more than 1,500 members of a controversial sect from their village “for their own safety”, an official said Wednesday, but rights groups described their treatment as religious persecution. Members of the mysterious Light of Nusantara Movement -- or Gafatar -- have been moved from a remote communal farm in Indonesia’s half of Borneo island after a mob attack. They are now in the country’s main island of Java undergoing “rehabilitation” instruction sessions on Islam and civic duties. Meanwhile, followers of a separate minority group face ejection from their community unless they

convert to mainstream Islam, according to Human Rights Watch. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, is seen as largely tolerant and pluralist. But a number of high-profile attacks against minority groups in recent years has marred this image. The controversy surrounding Gafatar, a group accused of luring followers from across Indonesia to practise a deviant blend of

the Muslim faith, has captivated national attention despite its tiny following in a country of 250 million. Last week an angry mob torched their village base in Kalimantan, displacing roughly 500 families -more than 1,500 people. They were evacuated by government authorities first to temporary shelters then back to Indonesia’s main island of Java, some by warship. A spokesman for President Joko Widodo said the decision was made “for their own safety” and several government departments had been instructed to handle the crisis. “We must protect our citizens

regardless of their identity. They are also Indonesian citizens,” spokesman Johan Budi told AFP. Gafatar insists that it does not practise deviant Islam. The country’s top clerical body, the Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI), is expected to rule next month on whether its beliefs are heretical. Anyone charged with heresy under Indonesian law can face five years in prison, said Human Rights Watch researcher Andreas Harsono. Police have said they are investigating any criminal links to the Gafatar movement. The evacuees in Java have begun what officials are calling “reha-

bilitation” sessions on religion and civic duty, some run by the MUI. The classes are expected to last five days and include special instruction for women and children and those deemed “ideologues” within the Gafatar movement, said Central Java MUI chairman Ahmad Daroji. HRW executive director Kenneth Roth chided Europe and the United States “for blatant Islamophobia and shameless demonizing of refugees,” warning this creates “the kind of division and animosity that terrorist recruiters love to exploit.” The organization unveiled its annual report reviewing human rights practices around the world in Istanbul. Durant’s 44 points lift Thunder to OT victory at Knicks

MELBOURNE - Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic says players are being hounded like “serial killers” and demanded proof of the match-fixing allegations that have rocked the sport at the Australian Open. Tennis officials have been forced onto the back foot at the season opening grand slam after media reports alleged the anti-corruption watchdog had failed to properly police the game. A review of the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) was announced earlier on Wednesday by the sport’s power brokers in an effort to head off criticism that could lead to it being dragged down the same path as athletics and soccer. Alejandro Dominguez unanimously elected CONMEBOL president

ASUNCION, Paraguay — Alejandro Dominguez of Paraguay was elected on Tuesday as the fourth president in three years of turmoil for the governing body of South American soccer. Dominguez was the only candidate to lead CONMEBOL, and received all 10 votes from the 10 member federations. Wilmar Valdez of Uruguay withdrew his candidacy before the voting began. The Paraguayan official also became a FIFA vice president and member of its often-discredited executive committee until May 2019. Dominguez stepped into the positions after the last three CONMEBOL presidents were implicated in taking bribes from marketing contracts for the Copa America. All three were arrested at the request of United States authorities in a sweeping corruption scandal surrounding FIFA and Latin America in particular. The previous CONMEBOL president was Juan Angel Napout of Paraguay, a close friend of Dominguez, who was arrested in Switzerland last month and agreed to be extradited to the U.S. Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay faces charges in his own country after Swiss authorities who arrested him last May agreed to extradite him home instead of to the U.S. Previously, Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay led CONMEBOL for almost three decades before

At the making of a ladder, the stones were said to walk by itself pursuant to the will of Kebo Iwa. Uniquely, every time stepping down the stairs, the amount was always different. According to story developing in the area, before Kebo Iwa became a Chief Minister of Bedahulu his competency was tested by the royal officials, including by Ki Pasung Grigis, known to have a supernatural power. The place where to measure the supernatural strength was known as Dharmma Hanyar. Since Kebo Iwa was unbeaten he was finally accepted to fill in the position as Chief Minister of Bedahulu. Ivanisevic demands proof of matchfixing allegations

MELBOURNE - Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic says players are being hounded like “serial killers” and demanded proof of the match-fixing allegations that have rocked the sport at the Australian Open. Tennis officials have been forced onto the back foot at the season opening grand slam after media reports alleged the anti-corruption watchdog had failed to properly police the game. A review of the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) was announced earlier on Wednesday by the sport’s power brokers in an effort to head off criticism that could lead to it being dragged down the same path as athletics and soccer. ISTANBUL — Western governments fearful of terror attacks and the potential threat posed by refugees are shortchanging human rights and adopting counterproductive policies in the name of security, Human Rights Watch said in its world report Wednesday. BERLIN — The German government has banned a far-right Internet platform that it accuses of spreading “racist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic, homophobic and anti-Islamic content” and federal prosecutors say two people have been arrested. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Wednesday the ban on the Altermedia Deutschland platform is “a clear sign that the rule of law doesn’t allow hate crime.”

JAKARTA - Indonesia has relocated more than 1,500 members of a controversial sect from their village “for their own safety”, an official said Wednesday, but rights groups described their treatment as religious persecution. Members of the mysterious Light of Nusantara Movement -- or Gafatar -- have been moved from a remote communal farm in Indonesia’s half of Borneo island after a mob attack. They are now in the country’s main island of Java undergoing “rehabilitation” instruction sessions on Islam and civic duties. Meanwhile, followers of a separate minority group face ejection from their community unless they

convert to mainstream Islam, according to Human Rights Watch. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, is seen as largely tolerant and pluralist. But a number of high-profile attacks against minority groups in recent years has marred this image. The controversy surrounding Gafatar, a group accused of luring followers from across Indonesia to practise a deviant blend of

the Muslim faith, has captivated national attention despite its tiny following in a country of 250 million. Last week an angry mob torched their village base in Kalimantan, displacing roughly 500 families -more than 1,500 people. They were evacuated by government authorities first to temporary shelters then back to Indonesia’s main island of Java, some by warship. A spokesman for President Joko Widodo said the decision was made “for their own safety” and several government departments had been instructed to handle the crisis. “We must protect our citizens

regardless of their identity. They are also Indonesian citizens,” spokesman Johan Budi told AFP. Gafatar insists that it does not practise deviant Islam. The country’s top clerical body, the Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI), is expected to rule next month on whether its beliefs are heretical. Anyone charged with heresy under Indonesian law can face five years in prison, said Human Rights Watch researcher Andreas Harsono. Police have said they are investigating any criminal links to the Gafatar movement. The evacuees in Java have begun what officials are calling “reha-

bilitation” sessions on religion and civic duty, some run by the MUI. The classes are expected to last five days and include special instruction for women and children and those deemed “ideologues” within the Gafatar movement, said Central Java MUI chairman Ahmad Daroji. Bomb threat has no impact on tourist visits to Gianyar

GIANYAR – The bomb threat in Bali that followed the explosion and shooting incidents in Thamrin, Jakarta not long time ago, has had no impact on the number of tourist visiting Gianyar -including Ubud, said Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta on Tuesday. Brahmanta did concede that there were less tourist visiting Gianyar in January, compared to December, but he added that is a common trend every year and that the next peak season for tourism starts in June. “This time of year is known as the low season with hotel and villa occupancy rates averaging about 20 -30 percent,” he explained. Overall, 2015 saw significant increases in the number of tourist visiting Gianyar, with 2.8 million visitors, whereas the target for

2015 was only 2.5 million, said Brahmanta. Large numbers of tourist visited five main tourist destinations that are managed by the government of Gianyar: Goa Gajah, Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring, Yeh Pulu, Gunung Kawi Sebatu and Tirta Empul Tampaksiring. Zika virus, a wolf in sheep’s clothing

PARIS - The world’s latest health scare is a seemingly minor illness that carries a killer wrapped inside: Zika, the mosquitoborne virus sweeping Latin America, usually lasts less than a week, except when it derails a whole life. Zika, which resembles a light case of the flu, is often so mild that people don’t realize they have it. But health officials in Latin America say the tropical fever is linked to neurological problems and a surge in microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with abnormally small heads. The defect can cause brain damage and death. The outbreak has led authorities in some countries to urge couples not to get pregnant, while the US

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has warned pregnant women to avoid traveling to 22 affected countries. The virus was first identified in a monkey in Africa in 1947. Its name comes from a forest in Uganda where the first infected rhesus monkeys were found. Within several years the virus had jumped to humans in Uganda and Tanzania, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Like dengue fever and chikun-

gunya, two similar diseases, Zika is transmitted by mosquito species found in tropical and sub-tropical regions: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, or tiger mosquitoes. In 70 to 80 percent of cases, the disease goes unnoticed. The symptoms resemble a mild case of the flu -- headache, muscle and joint pain, and mild fever -- plus a rash. Symptoms usually last two to seven days. The disease is suspected of causing two serious complications: neurological problems and birth defects in babies born to infected women. It is now spreading locally in some 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries, as far north as Mexico. Brazil has been the hardest hit. Travelers have also brought it back to the US states of Florida, Hawaii and New York. A woman in Hawaii gave birth to a baby with microcephaly after traveling to Brazil. So far there have been no locally transmitted US cases reported, though the Aedes aegypti mosquito’s habitat stretches into the United States. Nano-thin pressure sensor could aid breast cancer exams TOKYO - Super-thin bendable sensors developed by Japanese and US scientists could someday be used in special gloves to detect breast lumps and make a digital record of the exam, the scientists said in a report. The nanofibre sensors are as thin as 3.4 micrometres -- less than half the thickness of kitchen wrap -- according to research published in the online version of British science magazine Nature Nanotechnology. “Healthcare practitioners may one day be able to physically screen for breast cancer using pres-

sure-sensitive rubber gloves to detect tumours,” the researchers said in a statement before the publication. A square sheet 4.8 by 4.8 centimetres (1.9 inches) in size has 144 locations that can measure pressure, said the research teams led by Tokyo University professor Takao Someya and Harvard University’s Zhigang Suo. The sheet is so flexible it can detect pressure changes accurately even when twisted like cloth -- a development claimed as a global first.

“Sensitive human fingers of a veteran doctor may be able to find a small tumour, but such perceived sensation cannot be measured,” Someya told AFP Monday. When tested on an artificial blood vessel, the sheet successfully detected “small pressure changes and speed of pressure propagation”, Sungwon Lee, a leading researcher in Someya’s team, said in the statement.

Someya stressed that the development would one day enable the equivalent of medical palpation -- examining a patient by physical touch -- by doctors in different locations from the patient. “The new sensor would make it possible to measure the human sensation so that findings by palpation could even be shared remotely,” he said. “In the future, we would be able to record and make tangible certain sensations that can only be perceived by an experienced doctor.” (afp)

“Flying squad” of BSMP rescue dugong calf

GIANYAR - A “flying squad” consisting of a marine mammal veterinarian and animal care staff from Bali Safari & Marine Park (BSMP) and the Batang Dolphin Center recently responded to an urgent call for assistance from the Indonesian Government. The team flew at just one day notice to a seaside resort in the Komodo National Park to provide emergency supportive care and rehabilitation to a dugong calf found stranded a few days earlier. The dugong – also known in Indonesia as a duyung or sea cow, is a medium-sized marine mammal. Capable of living up to 75 years - these gentle, docile and shy animals spend their lives in the ocean’s shallows surviving exclusively on a diet of sea grass. In time’s past, the dugong was hunted for its prized flesh, hide and body oils. Today, it is internationally classified as a species vulnerable to extinction, protected under national laws and international treaties. Responding to a request for assistance from the Indonesian Conservation Agency (BKSDA), the “flying squad” formed by veterinarians from BSMP – Dr. Nimal Fernando and Dr.

Kadek Kesuma; BSMP supervisor Nyoman Suartawan; and Sutejo of the Batang Dolphin Center arrived at Kanawa Island resort where a group of vacationing marine biologists from the USA had spent the past three days hand feeding and nurturing a male dugong estimated to be only one-month-old. The Indonesian ’flying squad’ arrived to find the animal with several lacerations caused by encounters with sharp coral and suffering from a lack of mother’s milk. It was presumed to be an orphaned calf, but the details of the mother and whether she had died is not known. Knowing that, statistically, the chances of survival for orphaned dugong calves is small, the team of

dedicated professionals wasted no time and literally “plunged” into their work, spending up to 8 hours a day in the sea , under a makeshift shelter administering a schedule of bottlefeedings using a special formula that they had carried from Bali Safari & Marine Park. Cautiously optimistic, the team of caregivers reports that their patient is now mixing a diet of formula milk with sea grass. Monitoring the animals input and output, the team was further encouraged by indications that the dugong’s alimentary tract was functioning normally. In consultation with representatives of the KSDA, the Komodo National Park, the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and supporting members of the surrounding community, a decision was made for members of the animal rescue flying squad to stay on site to supervise the sea mammal’s condition and provide ongoing training in its care and feeding to local community members. Today, only a few of these houses remain but they are carefully maintained to ensure that this heritage does not disappear,” Suardana. In the past almost all residents of Tigawsa cultivated gogo rice paddy and the yields were so great that almost every home had a jineng (rice granary). However clive has be-

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MIAMI - A bouncer at a Florida bar has sued Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter for attacking and choking him, labeling the star “nothing more than a backstreet thug.” Skylar Carden, 21, filed the lawsuit Monday in a court in the Florida Keys, alleging Carter caused “bodily injury, mental anguish, pain and suffering,” attorney Mark DiCowden told AFP. Carter was arrested on January 13 after he and a friend were escorted, drunk, by security personnel outside Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West. The singer was originally shown the door due to his “unruly and disrespectful” behavior, but he then became aggressive, beating and briefly choking Carden, according to the lawsuit. In court, Carter pleaded not guilty and was released on $1,500 bail. He broke his silence via a message on Twitter over the weekend. “I am human and at times it can be a struggle to balance a healthy lifestyle. I’m not perfect and for that I am sorry,” he wrote. “When we fall we have to get up and keep on walking. I hope

you stay by my side and continue to walk with me.” But Carden’s lawyer said that regardless of Carter’s celebrity status, the singer should respect other people’s rights, just like everyone else. “Nick Carter has shown the world that he is nothing more than a backstreet thug,” DiCowden wrote. “Carter’s backhanded apology in the form of a tweet was a crude attempt to control public relations and did nothing to address his remorse for the harm he caused Carden. “No amount of fame or fortune justifies Carter’s shameful and outrageous conduct. Suarjana specified that those that have been invited to respond include: the communities that would be most affected by the reclamation project, customary leaders, religious leaders, subdistrict heads, headmen, NGOs, other experts and university academics. ForBALI coordinator, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, said that he received a written invitation from the Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) on Friday (Jan. 15), that included the Amdal documents regarding the Benoa Bay revitalization action plan and sea sand mining. “Actually it is a fairly difficult document to sift through. Is two weeks enough time? I don’t think it is. But the problem is that we have no choice but to accept it,” said Gendo. He also said that many things in the Amdal document still raise questions -primarily with regards to the magnitude of project’s scope. Many things seem odd and should be questioned during the meeting for the Amdal test. “However, we cannot say exactly how to do this now because we are still learning and exploring the documents,” Gendo explained. Most importantly, he said, the different communities involved, need to begin to address the issues objectively and cannot afford to remain silent. Addressing the issues must

continue to be carried out though peaceful means and people need to be involved in the environmental policy making process - especially with mega-projects like this reclamation plan, he said. Gendo asserted that people should be informed about the details of project developments particularly the Amdal, because this project has a big impact on the future of Bali. The future of the communities in the area of Benoa Bay is at stake also the interests of Balinese people as a whole. The investors in the Benoa Bay project not openly plan to create islands covering an area of some 700 hectares, but they also plan to build a variety if accommodations ranging from apartments, condotel, and villas, all the way up to four- and five-star hotels, not to mention the manpower that this project would absorb; 60 percent local workers and 40 percent non-local workers.
