Singer George Michael of Wham! fame dies at 53
LONDON - British singer George Michael, who became one of the pop idols of the 1980s with Wham! and then forged a career as a successful solo artist with sometimes sexually provocative lyrics, died at his home in England on Sunday. He was 53. In the mid-1980s, “Wham! was one of the most successful pop duos ever, ahead even of Simon & Garfunkel, with singles like ““Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, ““Careless Whisper”, ““Last Christmas” and ““The Edge of Heaven”. “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist
said in a statement. “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage,” the statement said. China smog war moves to courts with range of crimes to widen
SHANGHAI - China’s courts will widen the range of offences that constitute “environmental crimes” to make it easier to take legal action against polluters, a senior judiciary official told a news briefing on Monday. The new rules could allow prosecutors to take on persistent offenders in northern China’s Hebei province, which was engulfed in heavy smog last week despite being on the front line of China’s nearly three-year “war on pollution”. Yan Maokun, head of a research office at the Supreme People’s Court, told reporters authorities had struggled to gather evidence required to prosecute, according to
a transcript of a briefing published on China’s official court website (http://www.chinacourt.org). “Air pollution is different from water pollution or soil pollution, and it is extremely difficult to get evidence for air pollution crimes because after the pollution is emitted it undergoes a large degree of dispersal, and is very quickly diluted,” Yan said. Prosecutors would focus on
specific offences such as tampering with sensor equipment or providing false emissions data, and firms found guilty would be punished regardless of the amount of pollution involved, he said. “It doesn’t matter how much you emit because in fact that is very hard to detect, but if you have distorted or fabricated data or interfered with the operation of equipment, this ... will constitute an environmental crime,” Yan said. Public anger is mounting in China about pollution, and what many see as government talk, but little action, to end it. Worry about
pollution has on occasion sparked protests. Eight cities in Hebei launched “red alerts” last week in response to the smog, which reached record levels at some monitoring stations. Hebei came under fire from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and a number of its steel firms were singled out for failing to suspend operations. Governor Zhang Qingwei said in the province’s first official response that the province would learn lessons and step up its efforts. “We need to seriously study and

Art heritage of Jagaraga needs resurrecting
SINGARAJA - Art heritage of Jagaraga village in Sawan subdistrict needs to be raised back by opening the adequate staging space. One of the attempts to open this opportunity is by making performance on cruise ship berthing at Benoa Harbor last weekend. A number of artists featured the dances and baleganjur gamelan music at noon. Then, in the evening they presented the Taruna Jaya dance on cruise ship. This performance was inseparable from the efforts made by former cruise ship worker, Gede Angastia, who is currently Chairman of the Buleleng Development Observation Forum (FPPMB). Manager of the Global Cruise Line Bali, Daniel Ferdinand, amid the performance said that the art heritage of Jagaraga also has taksu or divine vibration that should be raised. Bite the dust: meek dinosaur lost its teeth as it hit adulthood
WASHINGTON - A modest little dinosaur that scampered across northwestern China 160 million years ago boasted a unique trait not seen in any other dinosaur or other prehistoric creature yet unearthed: it was born with teeth but became toothless by adulthood. Scientists on Thursday said fossils of 19 individuals of a dinosaur called Limusaurus, ranging in age from under a year to 10 years, showed that juveniles had small, sharp teeth but adults developed a

found fossils of a dinosaur species ranging from babies to adults, a sequence revealing various anatomical changes that unfold as an animal matures. Limusaurus was a lightly built two-legged dinosaur with short arms and long, slender legs. It may have had down-like feathers covering at least part of its body. The largest ones were about 6 feet long (under 2 meters). “It probably looked something like an emu with a long tail,” said George Washington University paleontologist Joey Stiegler, one of the researchers in the study published in the journal Current Biology. Such tooth loss is called ontogenetic edentulism. Some animals alive today have it, including the egg-laying Australian mammal the platypus. The adult Limusaurus individuals also were found with stones called gastroliths that some plant-eating dinosaurs swallowed to grind up plant material in the stomach. The babies lacked these. The tooth loss and gastroliths indicate Limusaurus underwent a dramatic dietary change from birth to adulthood, starting life perhaps eating insects and small vertebrates before later turning to plants. Limusaurus is a member of the theropod dinosaur group within which birds evolved. George Washington University paleontologist James Clark said the findings suggest “species close to the origin of birds may have gone through a similar development, and tooth loss may have been gradual during the evolutionary origin of birds.” “This is important in showing that growth and development in dinosaurs was more complex than previously suspected, and it provides a model for a stage that birds may have gone through in evolving their beak,” Clark added. Birds, first appearing about 150 million years ago, evolved from small feathered dinosaurs. The earliest ones had teeth. Over tens of millions of years, many evolved toothless beaks like those in today’s birds. The last birds with teeth died with the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. (rtr)

Swat team: scientists track humongous number of flying bugs
WASHINGTON - Counting the number of bugs whizzing high overhead annually may seem all but impossible, but researchers in Britain have completed the most comprehensive tally ever conducted. And the headcount they came up with was almost un-bee-lievable. A total of 3.5 trillion insects weighing a combined 3,200 tons annually migrated annually over a region in south-central England monitored with specialized radar and a balloon-supported aerial netting system, the scientists said on Thursday. “High-altitude aerial migration of insects is enormous,” said University of Exeter entomologist Jason Chapman, whose research was published in the journal Science. “These aerial flows are an unappreciated aspect of terrestrial ecosystems, equivalent to the oceanic movements of plankton which power the oceanic food chains.” The researchers tracked the migration of insects at altitudes between 492 feet and 3,937 feet (150-1,200-meters) over a 10-year period. They suspect even more migrating bugs could be found elsewhere. “The numbers will be considerably higher in most parts of the world, but we lack the data to extrapolate the total numbers yet,” Chapman said. In terms of biomass, the insects greatly exceeded migratory birds in
Britain. Their biomass was seven times that of the 30 million songbirds flying from Britain to Africa each autumn. While the study did not plot the departure and destination points for the migrating bugs, they were thought to be traveling back and forth numerous miles (km), and sometimes over the English Channel and North Sea. “Some of the butterflies and moths we studied migrate hundreds of kilometers (miles) in each generation, and thousands of kilometers (miles) over the course of the year, which may include six generations,” Chapman said. Insects play important roles, pollinating plants, facilitating productive soil through decomposing, serving as food sources for birds and bats, spreading disease, and serving both as crop pests and predators of crop pests. “We could not function without them,” Chapman said. The mass insect migrations generally headed north in spring and south in autumn. The most abundant day-flying insects in the study included cereal aphids and the tiny parasitoid wasps that attack them. The most abundant medium-sized day-flying insects included hoverflies and ladybirds, also called ladybugs, and the most common big ones included large butterflies such as the painted lady. (rtr)

Some road sections to Kuta Beach will be sterilized from vehicles starting on Saturday (Dec. 31) at 4 p.m. Denpasar Police have set up several parking lots for people that will celebrate the New Year’s Eve on Kuta Beach. “Road section to Kuta Beach will be specifically intended for pedestrians only. Starting today (Wednesday—Ed) we’ve disseminated brochures regarding the closing of the traffic,” said Chief of the Denpasar Police, Heri Supriawan, on Wednesday (Dec. 21). Heri explained that the closure and diversion of traffic will be made at the intersection of Jalan
Patih Jelantik-Legian heading for Ground Zero to Jalan Legian Utara. Furthermore, the traffic of vehicles from the intersection of Jalan Patih Jelantik-Sriwijaya is diverted to Jalan Patih Jelantik to Raya Kuta. The cost increases from year to year, but what deplored is the comparison of the cost from Surabaya to Singapore only reaching 200 dollars, but from Bali to Surabaya with quite closer distance, the cost could reach three times reaching 500-600 dollars per TEU. followed by the price of cabbage rising 40 percent from IDR 10,000 to IDR 14,000. The price hike of other commodities is high enough, like red chili reaching IDR 70,000 per kg from IDR 60,000 per kg. Then,

Aleppo Christians celebrate holiday in hope peace has returned
AMMAN - Christians in Aleppo celebrated under a giant Christmas tree lit up for the first time in five years, hailing what many described as the return of peace to a city that came back under full government control last week. The fall of rebel-held east Aleppo was the biggest victory of Syria’s nearly six-year-old civil war for supporters of President Bashar alAssad, and many in pro-government parts of the city have been jubilant. However, the rebel defeat has also brought severe hardship on civilians who fled from insurgent-held areas, thousands of whom have been forced to camp in wilderness under
the snow. Aid groups say many are in peril and children have died from exposure to severe winter weather. In the war ravaged St. Elias Cathedral located on what was long the frontline in Aleppo’s historic Old City, priests prayed for peace at the first Christmas Eve Mass for five years, attended by dozens of worshippers, including some Russian officers.
“The festive atmosphere is great. It’s a new birth for Jesus Christ and a new birth for the city of Aleppo,” said George Bakhash, a Christian community leader. He said the numbers attending mass across the city had surged, now that worshippers no longer feared missiles from rebel-held areas. Many Syrian Christians supported the government in the civil war, viewing Assad, a member of a Shi’ite-derived minority sect, as a protector against rebel fighters mainly drawn from Syria’s Sunni Muslim majority.
In the comparatively undamaged parts of the city that had long been held by the government, restaurants were thronged by Christians late into the night. Hundreds of people danced and celebrated in the Azizya neighbourhood, where the public Christmas tree had gone unlit since rebels took the eastern half of the city in 2012. Giant posters depicted Assad and his Christian ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin. In live footage shown on state television, a woman identified as the mother of slain Syrian soldier
carried her son’s picture alongside an image of the Virgin Mary. “I am sure his soul is in peace now because Aleppo has been liberated,” she said. Although some Christians stayed on the sidelines of the civil war, many saw the rise of Islamic State and other Sunni Muslim insurgent groups as a threat to the very existence of their communities, some as old as the bible. MANILA - A typhoon weakened as it cut across the Philippines on Monday with strong wind felling trees and power lines, and authorities warned of flash floods and mudslides but there were no official reports of casualties. Typhoon Nock-ten, locally known as Nina, weakened to 150 kph (93 mph) as it headed west towards provinces south of the capital Manila, picking up speed to 20 kph. A storm alert was in place and land, sea and air transport were all suspended as authorities told the public to take precautions and prepare for strong wind and heavy rain. The Philippines is one of the
world’s worst-affected countries when it comes to typhoons, with an average of 20 a year passing or hitting the archipelago of more than 7,000 islands. Tens of thousands of people in the predominantly Christian country spent Christmas in shelters after authorities moved them to safety on higher ground. Emergency workers were mobilised to clear roads of debris, like fallen trees and power lines in the coconut-growing region, with some central areas plunged into darkness. The typhoon was due to make a fifth landfall in Batangas on Monday
then move towards Manila after its arrival in the country at Catanduanes province on Sunday evening. Ricardo Jalad, head of the national disaster risk reduction management council, said there were no reports of deaths or missing people but communications were disrupted. “We expect to get reports from the field as soon as power and telephone services are restored,” Jalad said. Radio DZBB reported a boy was killed in Quezon province when he was pinned down by a coconut tree and another girl injured in Camarines Sur when a house collapsed. SEOUL - Headed for a fourth straight annual profit decline, Hyundai Motor is trimming its cost fat; scaling back on business class flights and annual family home trips for overseas employees, executives told Reuters.
The South Korean automaker has been hit by its exposure to weak emerging markets, and a product line-up that features more sedans than sport utility vehicles, just as SUVs have become more popular across many global markets. The belt-tightening - which also includes cutting back on printing and fluorescent light bulbs - aims to buy Hyundai time to prepare new models and a design revamp. “We’re trying to address a mismatch between the market trend and our product line-up,” said one Hyundai insider, referring to a need for more SUV models. “That’s a longer term plan. For now we’re trying to save every penny,” he said, declining to be identified because the plans are not public. Since October, Hyundai Motor Group executives have taken a 10 percent pay cut, the first such move in seven years. The number of executives at Hyundai Motor alone has risen by 44 percent in five years, to 293 last year. The group has also downgraded hotel rooms for executive travel, and is encouraging video conferencing as a cheaper alternative to travel, insiders said. “We’re in emergency management mode,” said another insider, who didn’t want to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media. In a response to Reuters for this article, Hyundai Motor said it is “making various cost-saving efforts”, with shrinking global demand and growing business uncertainty, but did not elaborate. Other costs, such as low-margin supplier parts and labour at the heavily-unionised automaker, are tougher to pare back, said Ko Tae-bong, analyst at Hi Investment & Securities, noting Hyundai needs also to spend more on research and development in self-driving and other new technologies. While Hyundai remains cash-rich, its costs as a proportion of revenue have risen for five straight years, to 81 percent so far this year, regulatory filings show. “Cutting expenses are stopgap measures, and won’t do much to improve its bottom line,” Ko said, calling them more “symbolic”. SALES DECLINE Hyundai grew quickly after the global financial crisis, with brisk sales of its Sonata and Elantra sedans. It was the only major automaker to increase sales in the United States in 2009.

Indonesian militants planned New Year’s assault with machetes - police
JAKARTA - Indonesian militants supporting Islamic State planned to attack a police post on New Year’s eve with machetes and knives, a police spokesman said on Monday.
The plot was broken up after police arrested two of the wouldbe attackers who led them to their hideout, where police shot dead their two co-conspirators on Sunday after police said they tried to attack officers with machetes. “The four of them were planning to attack a police post in Purwakarta. They planned to attack on New Year’s Eve,” Rikwanto, a national police spokesman, told reporters, referring to a district about 100 km (60 miles) east of the capital, Jakarta. Sunday’s raid was the latest in a series over recent weeks that police say have disrupted attacks, raising concern that homegrown militants in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation are getting bolder. Police said last week that at least 14 people were being interrogated over suicide bomb plots targeting the presidential palace in Jakarta and an another undisclosed location. Both involved female suicide bombers - a new tactic for Indonesian militants. Police were still investigating whether the militants involved in the plot disrupted on Sunday had been trying to make bombs. The suspects were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a militant group supporting Islamic State, but it was not yet clear whether they been in direct communication with Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian militant who fled to Syria about two years ago, the spokesman said. Police say many of the recent plots uncovered have been inspired, if not directed, by Naim. Police have arrested dozens of suspected militants in recent months, including a group on an island near Singapore who police say were planning to attack the city-state with a rocket. Indonesia’s elite police unit, Special Detachment 88, has foiled at least 15 attacks this year and made more than 150 arrests.. For next year, Hyundai-Kia Executive Vice President and research head Park Hong-jae, expects sales to pick up again. “It was a difficult year this year. Things will get better,” he told reporters on Thursday, citing recovery in markets such as Brazil and Russia. MORE SUVS While it looks to manage its staff budget, Hyundai is beefing up its SUV offerings, freshening up its Sonata sedan, and redirecting exports from slow-demand markets such as the Middle East to the United States. In the United States, SUVs accounted for 28 percent of Hyundai’s sales in JanuaryNovember, up from 23 percent a year earlier, according to Autodata Corp, but less than half the industry average. At its plant in Montgomery, Alabama, Hyundai has replaced some Sonata production with its popular Santa Fe SUV. Next year, Hyundai will look to plug a gap in its SUV offerings for developed markets by making a sub-compact model - under the project name “OS” - in South Korea for sale at home, in the United States and Europe, people inside the company said. Hyundai makes sub-compact SUVs locally in China, India and Russia. “We need that small SUV in the U.S, much sooner than later,” Scott Fink, one of Hyundai’s biggest U.S. dealers, told Reuters.
In sedans, Hyundai is pushing sales of bigger, higher-margin models like the Azera, or Grandeur, and its Genesis luxury line. Its smaller sedans, including the Elantra and Sonata, have lost ground to rivals like Honda Motor’s Civic, which one Hyundai executive said has “wowing design”. Hyundai is working on a next generation of cars with “a different flair” to hit the market from 2019, Luc Donckerwolke, senior vice president for design, told Reuters on the sidelines of a recent event. The biggest holder of Hyundai Motor preferred shares, the Norway-based Skagen Kon-Tiki fund, expects the automaker to get back on track over the next couple of years, with new SUVs, recovering emerging market currencies and better plant utilisation. JAKARTA - As the world battles a spike in assaults and plots by Islamist militants, Indonesia’s anti-terrorism unit is drawing praise for stemming a wave of bloody attacks in the sprawling Muslimmajority nation. Indonesia has foiled at least 15 attacks this year alone and made more than 150 arrests, disrupting plots ranging from suicide attacks in Jakarta to a rocket attack from Indonesia’s Batam island targeting Singapore. Going back to 2010, a Reuters analysis of data shows the elite unit, Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88), has prevented at last 54 plots or attacks in the nation of 250 million people, the world’s fourth largest. “Densus 88 has become better than pretty well any other counterterrorism group in the world,” said Greg Barton, a terrorism export and research professor in Global Islamic Politics at Alfred Deakin Institute in Melbourne. “They have had an incredible workload and they have become remarkably good at what they do.”
In the last six years, there has been only one major attack in Indonesia that caused civilian deaths, when assailants hit a Jakarta mall and police post with gunfire and bombs, resulting in the deaths of three Indonesians and a dual Algerian-Canadian national. All four attackers were also killed in the January 2016 attack. Between 2002 to 2009, there were nine major attacks by militants, leaving 295 dead and hundreds of others wounded. Since its formation in 2002, the unit has put a premium on clandestine intelligence gathering. Now much of that intelligence work is done online, by infiltrating and monitoring chat rooms, social media and messaging apps popular with militants. SELF-SUFFICIENT Few details about Densus 88 are publicly available. “We built our organization to learn from the enemy,” said a senior counterterrorism officer who provided some insight into the working of
the unit but spoke on condition of anonymity. Created in the aftermath of the deadly 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people, Densus 88 has about 400 to 500 members, state-of-the-art weaponry and training, said another official. It has received more than $200 million of funding from Western allies such as Australia and the United States. The unit is headed by a task force, a core of 30 or so senior members, said the Indonesian law enforcement source. “Many of them possess doctorates and have specialties like psychology and social behaviour,” the source added. “They are not like regular police.” The black clad, heavily armed members of Densus 88 sometimes seen during raids on suspected militant hideouts make up a small proportion of the unit, officials say. Far more personnel are dedicated to gathering intelligence in the field and monitoring communications and online activity. There is also a large team of investigators
analysing that intelligence and forensically examining explosives and other evidence. Sidney Jones, the director of Institute for Policy Aanalysis of Conflict (IPAC), said the key to Densus 88’s success lies in its intelligence gathering. “They know the radical networks and have a good set of informers,” she said. “It is unparalleled in terms of its ability to understand the sources of possible threats.” STRATEGIC INTERROGATION Densus 88 has long been accused by human rights groups of abuses, including beatings of alleged separatists and Islamist suspects. Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission has identified 121 terrorism suspects who have died in custody since 2007 but the police routinely deny using torture or inappropriate force in interrogation. Amnesty International said earlier this year there was an “endemic
culture of impunity” in Indonesia’s police service and a need for an investigation into the “torture” of suspects by Densus 88. However, Barton said the unit has adopted a unique, “strategic” approach to interrogations that aids intelligence gathering. Suspects were kept at police stations rather than in jails and allowed to meet their families. “They sit down and listen to their story,” Barton said. “They get them talking and that’s an effective way of getting intelligence.” Despite Densus 88’s recent successes, the worry is that the militant threat to Indonesia is mounting as Islamic State fighters return battlehardened from Syria and Iraq. The ultra-radical group also commands support from some Indonesians who have stayed at home. About 800 Indonesians have travelled to Syria to join Islamic State and 169 have been stopped en route and deported, according to Indonesia’s national counterterrorism agency.(rtr)

JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday summoned the U.S. ambassador to Israel to discuss the U.S. abstention in a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding an end to settlement-building. Separately, the envoys of 10 other nations were called in to the Israeli Foreign Ministry to be reprimanded on Sunday, and Netanyahu had more harsh words for Washington over Friday’s U.N. vote. An Israeli spokesman gave no details of when Netanyahu would meet U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shapiro. The resolution was passed in the 15-member Security Council because the U.S. broke with its long-standing approach of diplomatically shielding Israel and did not wield its veto power, instead abstaining. Netanyahu put his personal imprint on Israel’s show of anger by repeating at the weekly cabinet meeting what an unidentified Israeli government official contended on Friday - that the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama had conspired with the Palestinians to push for the resolution’s adoption. The White House has denied the
allegation. “According to our information, we have no doubt the Obama administration initiated it (the resolution), stood behind it, coordinated the wording and demanded it be passed,” Netanyahu told the cabinet in public remarks. Another official said Netanyahu had ordered that for the coming three weeks, until President-elect Donald Trump takes office, cabinet ministers refrain from travelling to or meeting officials of countries that voted in favour of the resolution. World-record breaking circumnavigator heads home to France
PARIS - Sailor Thomas Coville was due to arrive in the French port of Brest on Monday hours after smashing the world record for a single-handed non-stop sailing circumnavigation of the globe. Frenchman Coville, aged 48, crossed a finish line off the Brittany coast on Sunday after a voyage of 49 days three hours seven minutes and 38 seconds, slashing more than eight days off the previous record in his 31-metre trimaran multihull, according to his sponsor Sodebo. It was Coville’s fifth attempt to beat a record set in 2008 by Francis Joyon, another Frenchman. His Sodebo Ultim yacht achieved an average speed of 24.1 knots. “Mentally I had my highs and my lows but I knew where I wanted to get to,” he told Le Parisien newspaper in an interview after a voyage in which he said he did not sleep more than three hours at a stretch. “Physically I could not have gone much further.” (rtr)

CLEVELAND - As Kyrie Irving waded through a sea of reporters and made his way to his locker on Sunday, teammate LeBron James saw him coming and shook his head. “He’s special,” James said. Irving certainly seems to have a special gift: torturing the Golden State Warriors. His turnaround jumper with 3.4 seconds left over Klay Thompson gave the Cleveland Cavaliers a stunning 109-108 home victory in an NBA Finals rematch after Cleveland trailed by 14 earlier in the fourth quarter. “He’s just a killer on the court,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. Irving’s jumper over Thompson was reminiscent of his dagger 3-pointer in the final minute of Game 7, when he completed the Cavs’ rally from a 3-1 deficit and delivered Cleveland its first championship in 52 years. That
was an off-balance 3-pointer over Steph Curry off his wrong foot and exhausted legs. This one was over Thompson’s superior defense. “I’m pretty sure Klay wanted to be on me and I’m pretty sure I wanted Klay to be on me as well,” Irving said. “It was just a great play that ended up happening but it was toughly defended.” The Warriors led most of the game and extended their lead to 94-80 while James rested on the bench early in the fourth. But James’ rim-rattling dunk with 1:43 left gave the Cavs a 105-103 lead -- their first since early in the first quarter -- and the Warriors managed just 13 points over the game’s final nine minutes. “We had a chance to put them away,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said. “We had several bad possessions in a row. We had too many
turnovers. We had control of the game and we did not execute at all in the fourth quarter. It’s a great tape to look at. It will be quite valuable for us to look at that tape because we know we let it slip away.” Irving scored 25 points while James had 31 points and 13 rebounds. Kevin Love added 20 points and six rebounds. Kevin Durant was sensational in his first chapter of the best rivalry in the NBA. MANCHESTER — In one sense, normality has returned to the English Premier League after the craziness of Leicester’s improbable surge to the title last season.
The top six on Christmas Day are the teams most pundits predicted would be challenging for the title: Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United. There’s nothing normal about Chelsea’s current form, however. After 11 straight wins, Chelsea leads the league by six points from Liverpool, heading into the hectic period of festive fixtures that is unique to British soccer. Only once — Arsenal in 2001-02, with 13 straight wins — has a top-tier club had a longer winning streak in one season since World War II. In the first year of the “super-coach” era in the Premier League, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is standing head and shoulders above the rest, although it needed a September switch to his favored 3-4-3 formation to get the team to click. With a stingy defense (two goals conceded in the last 11 games), a dynamic midfield marshalled by N’Golo Kante and a forward line led by the league’s top scorer, Diego Costa, there are no apparent weaknesses in Conte’s lineup. On current evidence, it’s hard to see how the team from southwest London can be stopped. One thing is for sure, there’ll be no miracle sequel for Leicester in the Premier League. Languishing in 15th place in the 20-team standings, the reigning champions are closer to the relegation
zone than the Champions League qualification spots. It’s back to the heavyweights challenging for the title. And Chelsea is the big favorite.

“I’m still waiting for the five-year contract to come through from Chelsea, they haven’t called yet,” Lampard joked during an interview on Sky Sports television on Saturday. “Whatever happens, in some capacity I will be at Chelsea, whether that’s with my season ticket watching them...I don’t know. I will be in very close contact. “Whether I have a role is not all in my hands so I can’t go any further than that. I am very relaxed about it which is a nice place to be. “I’m not kind of eager that the end of my career is coming and thinking, ‘What’s going to happen now?’,” added Lampard.

Club America could not find a way past Guzman in the shootout, the keeper saving all three shots he faced from the spot after the teams had finished the two-leg final locked at 2-2 on aggregate. The Tigres were flawless from the spot, converting three out of three to claim their fifth league title in unlikely circumstances. Only minutes earlier, the home side had seemed headed for defeat

MOSCOW - Russia held a national day of mourning on Monday, a day after a Syria-bound military plane crashed into the Black Sea killing all 92 people on board, and expanded a search operation to try to recover passengers’ bodies and the jet’s black box. The plane, a Russian Defence Ministry TU-154, was carrying dozens of Red Army Choir singers, dancers and orchestra members to Syria where they were meant to entertain Russian troops in the run-up to the New Year. JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday summoned the U.S. ambassador to Israel to discuss the U.S. abstention in a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding an end to settlement-building. Separately, the envoys of 10 other nations were called in to the Israeli Foreign Ministry to be reprimanded on Sunday, and Netanyahu had more harsh words for Washington over Friday’s U.N. vote. An Israeli spokesman gave no details of when Netanyahu would meet U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shapiro. The resolution was passed in the 15-member Security Council because the U.S. broke with its long-standing approach of diplomatically shielding Israel and did not wield its veto power, instead abstaining. Netanyahu put his personal imprint on Israel’s show of anger by repeating at the weekly cabinet meeting what an unidentified Israeli government official contended on Friday - that the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama had conspired with the Palestinians to push for the resolution’s adoption. The White House has denied the
allegation. “According to our information, we have no doubt the Obama administration initiated it (the resolution), stood behind it, coordinated the wording and demanded it be passed,” Netanyahu told the cabinet in public remarks. Another official said Netanyahu had ordered that for the coming three weeks, until President-elect Donald Trump takes office, cabinet ministers refrain from travelling to or meeting officials of countries that voted in favour of the resolution. SEOUL - Headed for a fourth straight annual profit decline, Hyundai Motor is trimming its cost fat; scaling back on business class flights and annual family home trips for overseas employees, executives told Reuters.
The South Korean automaker has been hit by its exposure to weak emerging markets, and a product line-up that features more sedans than sport utility vehicles, just as SUVs have become more popular across many global markets. The belt-tightening - which also includes cutting back on printing and fluorescent light bulbs - aims to buy Hyundai time to prepare new models and a design revamp. “We’re trying to address a mismatch between the market trend and our product line-up,” said one Hyundai insider, referring to a need for more SUV models. “That’s a longer term plan. For now we’re trying to save every penny,” he said, declining to be identified because the plans are not public. Since October, Hyundai Motor Group executives have taken a 10 percent pay cut, the first such move in seven years. The number of executives at Hyundai Motor alone has risen by 44 percent in five years, to 293 last year. The group has also downgraded hotel rooms for executive travel, and is encouraging video conferencing as a cheaper alternative to travel, insiders said. “We’re in emergency management mode,” said another insider, who didn’t want to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media. In a response to Reuters for this article, Hyundai Motor said it is “making various cost-saving efforts”, with shrinking global demand and growing business uncertainty, but did not elaborate. Other costs, such as low-margin supplier parts and labour at the heavily-unionised automaker, are tougher to pare back, said Ko Tae-bong, analyst at Hi Investment & Securities, noting Hyundai needs also to spend more on research and development in self-driving and other new technologies. While Hyundai remains cash-rich, its costs as a proportion of revenue have risen for five straight years, to 81 percent so far this year, regulatory filings show. “Cutting expenses are stopgap measures, and won’t do much to improve its bottom line,” Ko said, calling them more “symbolic”. SALES DECLINE Hyundai grew quickly after the global financial crisis, with brisk sales of its Sonata and Elantra sedans. It was the only major automaker to increase sales in the United States in 2009.

Indonesian militants planned New Year’s assault with machetes - police
JAKARTA - Indonesian militants supporting Islamic State planned to attack a police post on New Year’s eve with machetes and knives, a police spokesman said on Monday.
The plot was broken up after police arrested two of the wouldbe attackers who led them to their hideout, where police shot dead their two co-conspirators on Sunday after police said they tried to attack officers with machetes. “The four of them were planning to attack a police post in Purwakarta. They planned to attack on New Year’s Eve,” Rikwanto, a national police spokesman, told reporters, referring to a district about 100 km (60 miles) east of the capital, Jakarta. Sunday’s raid was the latest in a series over recent weeks that police say have disrupted attacks, raising concern that homegrown militants in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation are getting bolder. Police said last week that at least 14 people were being interrogated over suicide bomb plots targeting the presidential palace in Jakarta and an another undisclosed location. Both involved female suicide bombers - a new tactic for Indonesian militants. Police were still investigating whether the militants involved in the plot disrupted on Sunday had been trying to make bombs. The suspects were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a militant group supporting Islamic State, but it was not yet clear whether they been in direct communication with Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian militant who fled to Syria about two years ago, the spokesman said. Police say many of the recent plots uncovered have been inspired, if not directed, by Naim. Police have arrested dozens of suspected militants in recent months, including a group on an island near Singapore who police say were planning to attack the city-state with a rocket. Indonesia’s elite police unit, Special Detachment 88, has foiled at least 15 attacks this year and made more than 150 arrests.. Sales of Hyundai cars, and those of its affiliate Kia Motors , could drop to 8 million this year, a first decline since Hyundai bought its smaller domestic rival in 1998, said Ko, the analyst. For next year, Hyundai-Kia Executive Vice President and research head Park Hong-jae, expects sales to pick up again. “It was a difficult year this year. Things will get better,” he told reporters on Thursday, citing recovery in markets such as Brazil and Russia. Another Hyundai source said the group has trimmed its preliminary 2017 sales target to 8.2 million vehicles, from 8.35 million forecast in mid-year.
MORE SUVS While it looks to manage its staff budget, Hyundai is beefing up its SUV offerings, freshening up its Sonata sedan, and redirecting exports from slow-demand markets such as the Middle East to the United States. In the United States, SUVs accounted for 28 percent of Hyundai’s sales in JanuaryNovember, up from 23 percent a year earlier, according to Autodata Corp, but less than half the industry average. At its plant in Montgomery, Alabama, Hyundai has replaced some Sonata production with its popular Santa Fe SUV. Next year, Hyundai will look to plug a gap in its SUV offerings for developed markets by making a sub-compact model - under the project name “OS” - in South Korea for sale at home, in the United States and Europe, people inside the company said. Hyundai makes sub-compact SUVs locally in China, India and Russia. “We need that small SUV in the U.S, much sooner than later,” Scott Fink, one of Hyundai’s biggest U.S. dealers, told Reuters.
In sedans, Hyundai is pushing sales of bigger, higher-margin models like the Azera, or Grandeur, and its Genesis luxury line. Its smaller sedans, including the Elantra and Sonata, have lost ground to rivals like Honda Motor’s Civic, which one Hyundai executive said has “wowing design”. Hyundai is working on a next generation of cars with “a different flair” to hit the market from 2019, Luc Donckerwolke, senior vice president for design, told Reuters on the sidelines of a recent event. The biggest holder of Hyundai Motor preferred shares, the Norway-based Skagen Kon-Tiki fund, expects the automaker to get back on track over the next couple of years, with new SUVs, recovering emerging market currencies and better plant utilisation. JAKARTA - As the world battles a spike in assaults and plots by Islamist militants, Indonesia’s anti-terrorism unit is drawing praise for stemming a wave of bloody attacks in the sprawling Muslimmajority nation. Indonesia has foiled at least 15 attacks this year alone and made more than 150 arrests, disrupting plots ranging from suicide attacks in Jakarta to a rocket attack from Indonesia’s Batam island targeting Singapore. Going back to 2010, a Reuters analysis of data shows the elite unit, Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88), has prevented at last 54 plots or attacks in the nation of 250 million people, the world’s fourth largest. “Densus 88 has become better than pretty well any other counterterrorism group in the world,” said Greg Barton, a terrorism export and research professor in Global Islamic Politics at Alfred Deakin Institute in Melbourne. “They have had an incredible workload and they have become remarkably good at what they do.”
In the last six years, there has been only one major attack in Indonesia that caused civilian deaths, when assailants hit a Jakarta mall and police post with gunfire and bombs, resulting in the deaths of three Indonesians and a dual Algerian-Canadian national. All four attackers were also killed in the January 2016 attack. Between 2002 to 2009, there were nine major attacks by militants, leaving 295 dead and hundreds of others wounded. Since its formation in 2002, the unit has put a premium on clandestine intelligence gathering. Now much of that intelligence work is done online, by infiltrating and monitoring chat rooms, social media and messaging apps popular with militants. SELF-SUFFICIENT Few details about Densus 88 are publicly available. “We built our organization to learn from the enemy,” said a senior counterterrorism officer who provided some insight into the working of
the unit but spoke on condition of anonymity. Created in the aftermath of the deadly 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people, Densus 88 has about 400 to 500 members, state-of-the-art weaponry and training, said another official. It has received more than $200 million of funding from Western allies such as Australia and the United States. The unit is headed by a task force, a core of 30 or so senior members, said the Indonesian law enforcement source. “Many of them possess doctorates and have specialties like psychology and social behaviour,” the source added. “They are not like regular police.” The black clad, heavily armed members of Densus 88 sometimes seen during raids on suspected militant hideouts make up a small proportion of the unit, officials say. Far more personnel are dedicated to gathering intelligence in the field and monitoring communications and online activity. There is also a large team of investigators
analysing that intelligence and forensically examining explosives and other evidence. Sidney Jones, the director of Institute for Policy Aanalysis of Conflict (IPAC), said the key to Densus 88’s success lies in its intelligence gathering. “They know the radical networks and have a good set of informers,” she said. “It is unparalleled in terms of its ability to understand the sources of possible threats.” STRATEGIC INTERROGATION Densus 88 has long been accused by human rights groups of abuses, including beatings of alleged separatists and Islamist suspects. Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission has identified 121 terrorism suspects who have died in custody since 2007 but the police routinely deny using torture or inappropriate force in interrogation. Amnesty International said earlier this year there was an “endemic
culture of impunity” in Indonesia’s police service and a need for an investigation into the “torture” of suspects by Densus 88. However, Barton said the unit has adopted a unique, “strategic” approach to interrogations that aids intelligence gathering. Suspects were kept at police stations rather than in jails and allowed to meet their families. “They sit down and listen to their story,” Barton said. “They get them talking and that’s an effective way of getting intelligence.” Despite Densus 88’s recent successes, the worry is that the militant threat to Indonesia is mounting as Islamic State fighters return battlehardened from Syria and Iraq. The ultra-radical group also commands support from some Indonesians who have stayed at home. About 800 Indonesians have travelled to Syria to join Islamic State and 169 have been stopped en route and deported, according to Indonesia’s national counterterrorism agency.(rtr)

Aleppo Christians celebrate holiday in hope peace has returned
AMMAN - Christians in Aleppo celebrated under a giant Christmas tree lit up for the first time in five years, hailing what many described as the return of peace to a city that came back under full government control last week. The fall of rebel-held east Aleppo was the biggest victory of Syria’s nearly six-year-old civil war for supporters of President Bashar alAssad, and many in pro-government parts of the city have been jubilant. However, the rebel defeat has also brought severe hardship on civilians who fled from insurgent-held areas, thousands of whom have been forced to camp in wilderness under

“The festive atmosphere is great. It’s a new birth for Jesus Christ and a new birth for the city of Aleppo,” said George Bakhash, a Christian community leader. WASHINGTON - A modest little dinosaur that scampered across northwestern China 160 million years ago boasted a unique trait not seen in any other dinosaur or other prehistoric creature yet unearthed: it was born with teeth but became toothless by adulthood. found fossils of a dinosaur species ranging from babies to adults, a sequence revealing various anatomical changes that unfold as an animal matures. Limusaurus was a lightly built two-legged dinosaur with short arms and long, slender legs. It may have had down-like feathers covering at least part of its body. The largest ones were about 6 feet long (under 2 meters). “It probably looked something like an emu with a long tail,” said George Washington University paleontologist Joey Stiegler, one of the researchers in the study published in the journal Current Biology. Such tooth loss is called ontogenetic edentulism. Some animals alive today have it, including the egg-laying Australian mammal the platypus. The adult Limusaurus individuals also were found with stones called gastroliths that some plant-eating dinosaurs swallowed to grind up plant material in the stomach. The babies lacked these. The tooth loss and gastroliths indicate Limusaurus underwent a dramatic dietary change from birth to adulthood, starting life perhaps eating insects and small vertebrates before later turning to plants. Limusaurus is a member of the theropod dinosaur group within which birds evolved. George Washington University paleontologist James Clark said the findings suggest “species close to the origin of birds may have gone through a similar development, and tooth loss may have been gradual during the evolutionary origin of birds.” “This is important in showing that growth and development in dinosaurs was more complex than previously suspected, and it provides a model for a stage that birds may have gone through in evolving their beak,” Clark added. Birds, first appearing about 150 million years ago, evolved from small feathered dinosaurs. The earliest ones had teeth. Over tens of millions of years, many evolved toothless beaks like those in today’s birds. The last birds with teeth died with the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. (rtr)

Swat team: scientists track humongous number of flying bugs
WASHINGTON - Counting the number of bugs whizzing high overhead annually may seem all but impossible, but researchers in Britain have completed the most comprehensive tally ever conducted. And the headcount they came up with was almost un-bee-lievable. A total of 3.5 trillion insects weighing a combined 3,200 tons annually migrated annually over a region in south-central England monitored with specialized radar and a balloon-supported aerial netting system, the scientists said on Thursday. “High-altitude aerial migration of insects is enormous,” said University of Exeter entomologist Jason Chapman, whose research was published in the journal Science. “These aerial flows are an unappreciated aspect of terrestrial ecosystems, equivalent to the oceanic movements of plankton which power the oceanic food chains.” The researchers tracked the migration of insects at altitudes between 492 feet and 3,937 feet (150-1,200-meters) over a 10-year period. They suspect even more migrating bugs could be found elsewhere. “The numbers will be considerably higher in most parts of the world, but we lack the data to extrapolate the total numbers yet,” Chapman said. In terms of biomass, the insects greatly exceeded migratory birds in
Britain. Their biomass was seven times that of the 30 million songbirds flying from Britain to Africa each autumn. While the study did not plot the departure and destination points for the migrating bugs, they were thought to be traveling back and forth numerous miles (km), and sometimes over the English Channel and North Sea. “Some of the butterflies and moths we studied migrate hundreds of kilometers (miles) in each generation, and thousands of kilometers (miles) over the course of the year, which may include six generations,” Chapman said. Insects play important roles, pollinating plants, facilitating productive soil through decomposing, serving as food sources for birds and bats, spreading disease, and serving both as crop pests and predators of crop pests. “We could not function without them,” Chapman said. The mass insect migrations generally headed north in spring and south in autumn. The most abundant day-flying insects in the study included cereal aphids and the tiny parasitoid wasps that attack them. The most abundant medium-sized day-flying insects included hoverflies and ladybirds, also called ladybugs, and the most common big ones included large butterflies such as the painted lady. (rtr)

The cost increases from year to year, but what deplored is the comparison of the cost from Surabaya to Singapore only reaching 200 dollars, but from Bali to Surabaya with quite closer distance, the cost could reach three times reaching 500-600 dollars per TEU. This is expressed by Chairman of Association of Indonesian Forwarders (ALFI) Bali, Bagus John Sujayana, on Thursday (Dec. 22) at the ALFI meeting for Bali region. “Seeing the high cost of logistics for export, we are trying to embrace the existing stakeholders to help

Singer George Michael of Wham! fame dies at 53
LONDON - British singer George Michael, who became one of the pop idols of the 1980s with Wham! and then forged a career as a successful solo artist with sometimes sexually provocative lyrics, died at his home in England on Sunday. He was 53. In the mid-1980s, “Wham! was one of the most successful pop duos ever, ahead even of Simon & Garfunkel, with singles like ““Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, ““Careless Whisper”, ““Last Christmas” and ““The Edge of Heaven”. “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist
said in a statement. “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage,” the statement said. China smog war moves to courts with range of crimes to widen
SHANGHAI - China’s courts will widen the range of offences that constitute “environmental crimes” to make it easier to take legal action against polluters, a senior judiciary official told a news briefing on Monday. The new rules could allow prosecutors to take on persistent offenders in northern China’s Hebei province, which was engulfed in heavy smog last week despite being on the front line of China’s nearly three-year “war on pollution”. Yan Maokun, head of a research office at the Supreme People’s Court, told reporters authorities had struggled to gather evidence required to prosecute, according to
a transcript of a briefing published on China’s official court website (http://www.chinacourt.org). “Air pollution is different from water pollution or soil pollution, and it is extremely difficult to get evidence for air pollution crimes because after the pollution is emitted it undergoes a large degree of dispersal, and is very quickly diluted,” Yan said. Prosecutors would focus on
specific offences such as tampering with sensor equipment or providing false emissions data, and firms found guilty would be punished regardless of the amount of pollution involved, he said. “It doesn’t matter how much you emit because in fact that is very hard to detect, but if you have distorted or fabricated data or interfered with the operation of equipment, this ... will constitute an environmental crime,” Yan said. Public anger is mounting in China about pollution, and what many see as government talk, but little action, to end it. Worry about
pollution has on occasion sparked protests. Eight cities in Hebei launched “red alerts” last week in response to the smog, which reached record levels at some monitoring stations. Hebei came under fire from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and a number of its steel firms were singled out for failing to suspend operations. Governor Zhang Qingwei said in the province’s first official response that the province would learn lessons and step up its efforts. “We need to seriously study and
analyse our responses, sum up our experiences, and find problems and deficiencies in order to draw up more focused measures,” Zhang was quoted as saying on an official website (http://www.hebei. gov.cn). Continued to page 6
