PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Madonna is in Haiti to visit humanitarian projects that ex-husband Sean Penn has been overseeing since the Caribbean nation’s devastating earthquake in 2010, the actor said Monday. Penn said in a brief phone call to The Associated Press that he had invited Madonna, with whom he has “maintained a great friendship over the years,” to visit several times and that she had come with her son Rocco. He said they arrived a “couple of days” ago, and he wasn’t sure when she would leave. “She’s here, she’s seeing, she’s made the effort to come here, and I’m thrilled by that,” Penn said,

NEW YORK — U2 frontman Bono feels optimistic that his musical, “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark” will continue to thrive after the show turns the lights out on Broadway early next year. “When you think of the difficult birth that we had with ‘Turn Off the Dark,’” he said, “it’s worked out so well.” “Three hugely successful years, and then it’s off to Germany, it’s off to Las Vegas,” Bono said Monday night on the red carpet for “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
U2 contributed to the film’s soundtrack with “Ordinary Love.” It’s the band’s first new song in three years and it plays at the end of the movie. Bono and Edge also wrote the music for “Spider-Man.” By the time it closes, more than 2
million people will have seen it. But the musical had a tumultuous run, including six delayed opening nights, numerous injuries to the cast, and the publicized firing of director Julie Taymor. It was also Broadway’s most expensive show, costing around $75 million. “It was a lot more expensive than it should have been, but in the long term it will ... do very, very well,” he said. DENPASAR - Indonesia has tremendous potential to develop the meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) tourism. Unfortunately, it has not been worked on maximally. Director of Special Interest, Convention, Incentive and Event Development, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Akhyaruddin, said the handling of incentive tourism in particular was still far behind the other countries. gFor the management of incentive tourism as a separate part of MICE, we are relatively underdeveloped. Indonesia is ranked 41st out of 99th countries while specifically for Bali and Jakarta it was ranked 39th and 41st among 182 cities that have developed the incentive tourism,h said Akhyaruddin amidst the workshop on the management of incentive tourist
destination in Denpasar. He explained that incentive posed an award given by company to employees having an outstanding achievement. It included the activities such as holiday gift to the world destinations like Bali. Actually, he said, Indonesia had a great opportunity to work on the incentive tourism with the advantages such as being the country with many
islands and various tribes that could become tourist attractions. Unfortunately, the tourism stakeholders had not been able to capture the opportunities and less focus on working on the incentive tourism. Even, they had not owned a comprehensive understanding on the concept of MICE tourism. So far, they always combined it into MICE as a single unit whereas MICE had four sections namely meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition. gHere, we have asked each region or tourist destination to see the potential and strength of the section where the focus should be directed to. For example, if the strength of a tourist destination lies in the incentive it must be focused and the others must serve as sup-
porters. If the four sections become the focus, it will make people confused,h he said. Bali was expected to become one of the driving indicators of incentive tourism in Indonesia so that incentive travelers that had been spending holidays in Bali were also expected to visit other regions in Indonesia. He explained that employees of world companies conducting incentive activities in Bali or Indonesia would be staying and shopping in Bali. It would provide multiplier effect on the peoplefs economy in Bali including the other regions of Indonesia they visited. Chairman of the Indonesia Congress and Convention Association (INCCA) of Bali Chapter, IB Surakusuma, said that Bali should
be able to continue working on the incentive tourism. Incentive travelers denoting the companyfs employees would be provided with a lot of money when going on holiday in Bali. He believed the money would be used to buy souvenirs. However, there were still many obstacles, for example, in working on the American market. Incentive travelers from the American region took a long time to arrive in Bali. Meanwhile, though Australian market was still applying travel warning adding to travel advisory, they would remain to spend holiday to Bali. gTo work on incentive travelers, it is required a special strategy in order to drive the meeting and convention tourism,h he concluded. Permit of private hospitals in Buleleng at risk of being revoked Singaraja (Bali Post)—
Operating permit of private hospitals in Buleleng is threatened to be revoked. It happens because the four private hospitals in Buleleng do not have permanent doctors and only rely on on-call doctors from the county hospital. It was revealed in a roundtable discussion held by Bali Post regarding the Buleleng community health development at Rangon Sunset, Penimbangan Beach, Singaraja, Monday (Nov 25). In the discussion, a member of Commission D of the Buleleng house, Made Turkini, said the conferment of permit to private hospitals should be tightened. It had become a common knowledge that most private hospitals
employed on-call doctors from the county hospital. He himself claimed to have discovered a case of maternal mortality in a private hospital. Allegedly, the case occurred because the woman did not get a doctor’s handling after surgery. “It happened because the doctor was indeed on-call,” he said. In response to the case, the Head of Buleleng Health Agency, Made Puja, recognized that pri-
vate hospitals in Buleleng today still relied on doctors of county hospital. According to the rules, a private hospital should have a minimum of two permanent doctors. However, among the four existing private hospitals in Buleleng, none had owned a permanent doctor. “All private hospitals in Buleleng have not owned a permanent doctor,’ he said. Puja said that his party would
discipline the permits the control against private hospitals in Buleleng. They were expected to appoint at least two permanent doctors at the local hospital so they did not rely on the doctors of county hospital. When private hospitals would like to extend their permit, his party would firmly ask the hospitals to recruit permanent doctors. If they did not have a permanent doctor, his party would be forced not to extend the hospital permit or the permit would be revoked. “Private hospitals renew their permit every five years. Later, if they do not have a permanent doctor, their permits will not be extended,” he said. According to Puja, getting a permanent doctor was actually a simple mat-
ter for private hospitals. For example, the hospital could recruit the retired civil servant doctors. However, he knew the reason why it was not carried out. “Actually, private hospitals can recruit doctors who have retired from the county hospital, but it was not carried out,” he said. Meanwhile, the Director of Buleleng Hospital, Gede Wiartana, said the doctors on duty in the hospital were indeed allowed to practice in private hospitals provided that the doctors still gave priority to services in the county hospital. However, some doctors were even put priority on private hospitals. “Sometimes, it can actually harm the reputation of county hospital in the eyes of community,’ he said. (kmb15)
Compensation sluggish, road access of housing complex blocked Tabanan (Bali Post)—
A dispute of resident with the project investor ending in the blockage happened again in Tabanan. Since the land compensation was sluggish, the road to the housing complex at Bongan village, Tabanan, was blocked, Monday (Nov 25). Landowner, Nengah Sudarma, 60, was forced to block it because the demand for compensation to the investor came to a deadlock. The man from Grogak Gede hamlet, Delod Peken village, admitted to use four concrete beams after making coordination with his lawyer. “We’ve been making mediation for 8 times in the headman office. However, we always come to a dead end. The compensation of investor is not disbursed,” he said. According to Sudarma, he only hoped the housing investor was willing to have a discussion and talk about the compensation because the land use for road access to residential area was privately owned. The lawyer of Sudarma, Junaidi, asserted that the blockage was set on private property. So, it was not public road access. He said it was intended to touch the heart of the housing developer to mediate. “All this time, the mediation always comes to a dead end. Even, the developer did not come in
the last mediation whereas the land in use for the road access belongs to our client,” he said. The land, he said, was also officially certified. On that account, his client was still entitled to use or demand for compensation for the land. He described there were three housing developers using the land owned by his client. Of the land used for the road access, nearly half belonged to his client. “Unluckily, there is no any compensation,” he explained. Junaidi said the mediation with the developers had been made for several times, including the one made at local headman office. However, they did not find any solution, while the housing project still went ahead. Actually, his client had never mentioned the amount of proposed compensation. He just needed the good faith to meet and make mediation and then discuss about the compensation. As observation of Bali Post, the blockage used four mid-size concrete beams. The concrete beams were placed exactly in the middle of the driveway with the width of nearly 2.5 meters. As a result, four-wheeled vehicles could not pass. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. government for the first time has enforced environmental laws protecting birds against wind energy facilities, winning a $1 million settlement from a power company that pleaded guilty to killing 14 eagles and 149 other birds at two wind farms in the western state of Wyoming. The Obama administration has championed pollution-free wind power and used the same law against oil companies and power companies for drowning and electrocuting birds. The case against Duke Energy Corp. and its renewable energy arm was the first prosecuted under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act against a wind energy company. “In this plea agreement, Duke Energy Renewables acknowledges that it constructed these wind projects in a manner it knew beforehand would likely result in avian deaths,” Robert G. Dreher, acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, said in a statement Friday. An investigation by The Associated Press in May revealed dozens of eagle deaths from wind energy facilities, including at Duke’s Top of the World farm outside Casper, Wyoming, the deadliest for eagles

The Duke has a market capitalization of nearly $50 billion. “We deeply regret the impacts of golden eagles at two of our wind facilities,” said Greg Wolf, president of Duke Energy Renewables Inc. in a statement. “Our goal is to provide the benefits of wind energy in the most environmentally responsible way possible.” A study in September by federal biologists found that wind turbines had killed at least 67 bald and golden eagles since 2008. That did not include deaths at Altamont Pass, an area in northern California where wind farms kill an estimated 60 eagles a year. Until Friday’s announcement, not a single wind energy company had been prosecuted for a death of an eagle or other protected bird — even though each death is a viola-

NAMYANGJU, South Korea — Hyundai has revamped the luxury Genesis sedan for the first time since 2008, attempting to elevate its brand and grab a bigger share of U.S. car sales as competition from American and European automakers erodes Hyundai’s dominance in its South Korean stronghold. Since entering the U.S. in 1986, Hyundai Motor Co. has carved out a niche with buyers looking for cheaper alternatives to Toyota’s big-selling Camry and Corolla marques. Sophistication, power and style have not been qualities typically associated with its brand. Now, South Korea’s largest automaker hopes to expand sales by competing more boldly with BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota’s Lexus and other high-end models. The new Genesis, unveiled Tuesday, will be available in the U.S. early next year and will be the first Hyundai luxury sedan sold in Europe. Y.J. Ahn, a director of Hyundai’s American business, said the redesigned sedan will help drive 10 percent growth in Hyundai’s U.S. sales next year from 734,000 vehicles expected this year. The automaker’s U.S. market share declined to 4.7 percent in the first nine months of this year
from 4.9 percent in 2012. “This is a chance to raise Hyundai’s image in the premium car market,” said Ahn. The South Korean automaker, which with affiliate Kia Motors Corp. forms the world’s fifth-biggest car manufacturer, is in need of a boost. South Korea’s free trade agreements with the U.S. and European Union have opened Hyundai’s home market to greater competition. Last year, almost one in every two vehicles sold in South Korea was made by Hyundai. Last month, Hyundai’s share had dropped to 42 percent. Japan’s policy, meanwhile, of weakening the yen has given Japanese automakers a competitive edge in international sales. And a series of Hyundai recalls in North America and Asia have hurt the automaker’s image. Hyundai’s U.S. car sales rose 1.6 percent in the first nine months of this year compared with overall growth in auto sales of 8.1 percent. The new Genesis models will be sold at between 46.6 million won ($43,908) and 69.6 million won ($65,582) in South Korea. Prices for the U.S. have yet to be announced, but the new models will be cheaper than cars from BMW or Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai officials said.

During my second
term of presidency, I have reformed the Ministry of Tourism so that it can also be responsible for creative industries,” he noted. He also reminded that development could only be realized to the fullest if order and stability prevailed. “Today, there are countries which remain under conflict situation. Under such conditions, underdevelopment and poverty tend to persist or even become worse. Therefore, nurturing a culture of peace is essential to achieving sustainable development,” he stated. The President also termed the inaugural Forums theme of “The Power of Culture in Sustainable Development” as timely. “Indeed, the international community has recognized the significance of culture for achieving equitable, inclusive and sustainable development. This is evident in the inter-governmental processes at work the United Nations,” he added. The Forums speakers included Prof. Amartya Kumar Sen, an Indian economist and a Nobel laureate and Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO.

Police issued an arrest warrant for protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, a former opposition lawmaker, who led the storming of the Finance Ministry a day earlier. But police said he would not be arrested at the rally as part of a pledge to avoid clashes with protesters. Protesters say they want Yingluck, who took office in 2011, to step down amid claims her government is controlled by her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006. Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile for the past five years
to avoid a two-year prison sentence on a corruption conviction. Thousands of protesters fanned out to new targets in Bangkok on Tuesday, emboldened by their takeover of the Finance Ministry, where Suthep and hundreds of protesters camped overnight. The transport, agriculture and tourism ministries were also closed Tuesday because of their proximity to protests. Demonstrators surrounded the Interior Ministry and then cut electricity and water to pressure people inside to leave. Security personnel locked themselves behind the
ministry’s gates, with employees still inside. On Sunday, more than 100,000 demonstrators took to Bangkok’s streets, uniting against what they call the “Thaksin regime.” What started a month ago as a campaign against a political amnesty bill has morphed into a wider anti-government movement. Protest leaders now say their ultimate goal is to uproot the Shinawatra network from Thai politics, with no explanation of what that means. The occupation of the ministry offices has raised fears of violence and worries that Thailand is entering a new period of political instability. The workers also accused the governor of not taking sides with the fate of workers. According to Darsana, the recommendation of the wage council related to the provincial minimum wage amounting to IDR 1,321,500 was still very small and did not correspond to the decent living standard. In addition, the minimum wage was incompatible with the high regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Bali when compared to other regions in Indonesia. On the other hand, the local government had only focused on the interests of investors without being accompanied with the efforts to welfare the workers. LONDON - Rebekah Brooks, former head of Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper group, told Eimear Cook, the ex-wife of golfer Colin Montgomerie, it was “easy” to listen to other people’s voicemails, Cook told a London court on Monday. Brooks, who is on trial alongside seven other defendants, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to phone-hacking at the News of the World tabloid when she was editor, illegal payments to officials for stories and impeding police inquiries. The prosecution told the jury earlier in the trial that the comments made by Brooks to Cook over lunch in 2005 about intercepting voicemails showed the editor had known that phone-hacking was going on under her watch. Brooks denies this. Brooks’ lawyer Jonathan Laidlaw accused Cook of making up the conversation and other details about the lunch, a suggestion Cook denied. Brooks, known as Rebekah Wade prior to her second marriage in 2009, was editor of the now-defunct Sunday tabloid News of the World, then of its sister daily paper the Sun, before rising to be chief executive of News International, the British newspaper arm of Murdoch’s News Corp empire. Appearing as a prosecution witness, Cook was asked about an occasion in September 2005 when she and Brooks had lunch along with two of Cook’s friends, a couple called the Manoukians. PIN CODES “The bit I remember the most is the topic of how easy it is to listen to other people’s voicemails as long as they haven’t changed their factorysetting pin codes,” Cook told the court. Asked who had said that, she answered: “Rebekah”.
“She said she couldn’t believe that famous people who have all those advisers didn’t know you have to personalise your pin codes to make their voicemail secure,” Cook said, when asked to elaborate on how Brooks had expressed herself. Cook also said that while discussing this topic, Brooks had recounted “in parenthesis” a story about Paul McCartney and his then-fiancee Heather Mills having a row in a hotel that had resulted in an engagement ring being thrown out of the window. “I was under the impression she was talking about Paul McCartney’s phone that hadn’t had its pin code changed,” Cook said. Asked to describe Brooks’ attitude while talking about these matters, Cook said: “Quite flippant”. “She told me how ludicrous it was how people weren’t aware of the simple way to protect the privacy of their mobiles.” Laidlaw accused Cook of telling lies to the jury. Cook had told the court earlier that Brooks had talked during the lunch about a recent row between herself and her then-husband, actor Ross Kemp, that had been reported in her own newspaper, the Sun. Cook said Brooks had laughed about this. Laidlaw put it to her that an alleged assault by Brooks on Kemp that was reported in the newspapers did not take place until several weeks after the lunch, so her account of what Brooks had said could not possibly be true. Cook did not offer any explanation for the discrepancy in the dates but stuck by her story. “I did not make it up. I have no grievance against Mrs Brooks whatsoever,” she said. lic moral concerns” is permitted. Animal rights groups have long protested the mass clubbing of seals for fur and other products, saying it is inhumane. Canada said it will appeal the WTO ruling.

Geneva - The United States and Russia threw their full weight behind long-delayed Syria peace talks that the UN said finally would be held January 22, though it was not yet clear whether key sponsors of the warring sides would attend. “We haven’t established a list yet,” UN and Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said. ment and opposition will meet at the negotiating table instead of the battlefield,” Ban told reporters. “The fighting has raged on far too long -- with more than 100,000 dead, almost nine million driven from their homes, countless missing and detained, and terrible violations of human rights,” Ban said, calling the war the “biggest threat to international peace”. The United States, which has long urged Assad to step down, called the upcoming talks the “best opportunity” to form a new transitional government to lead Syria out of war. “In order to end the bloodshed and give the Syrian people a chance to meet their long-deferred aspirations, Syria needs new leadership,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement. He said he recognised “that the obstacles on the road to a political
solution are many, and we will enter the Geneva conference on Syria with our eyes wide open.” Russia, which broadly supports the survival of Assad’s regime, also underlined the importance of the talks. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a 35-minute audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican during which both men discussed the urgent need “to promote concrete initiatives for a peaceful solution to the conflict, favouring negotiation,” the Holy See said. SANICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Just outside the rustic village, children fished in a tranquil pond bobbing with green algae and lined with willow trees, as cattle grazed nearby. Now, Rezak Motanic gazes in disbelief down a gigantic moonlike crater where the pond used to be. It’s like something from a science fiction movie: a sinkhole swallowed the water, the fish and even nearby trees. “I sat here only a day before it happened, sipping plum brandy,” Cemal Hasan said. “And then, there was panic. Fish were jumping out, and a big plum tree was pulled down like someone yanked it with a hook.” The villagers of this remote northwestern Bosnian village have been in shock since the pond vanished two weeks ago. Their pond was some 20 meters (yards) in diameter and about eight meters deep. Now, the “abyss,” as the villagers have dubbed the crater, is some 50 meters wide and 30 meters deep — and growing. Scientists say it is not uncommon that ponds and small lakes suddenly disappear. They say it could be caused by drying underground water currents, or changes in soil drainage due to irrigation. The Sanica villagers, however, are having none of the scientific explanations. “It could have been a giant cave that opened its doors,” offered Milanko Skrbic. “Or a volcano.” Another popular theory — one that experts dismiss along with the others proposed by townsfolk — is that fish could have triggered the explosion of one of several World War II German bombs believed to have been thrown into the pond by an old woman after the war. “She herself died when one of the bombs exploded in her arms,” Cemal Hasan said as he stood on the edge of the “abyss.” Another spooky explanation: The owner of the pond took it with him when he died about a month ago. “Only days before Hasan passed away he said: ‘I’ll take everything with me when I die.’ And that’s what he did,” Motanic said. “His daughter saw him walk on the lake the night he died.” Husein Nanic said it could be a sign that the end is nigh: “All sort of miracles happen before the doomsday,” he said.

The mother of mass killer Adam Lanza wrote her son a check to buy a pistol as a Christmas present in the days leading up to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, according to an official report out Monday. Nancy Lanza — who was killed by her 20-year-old son last December before he killed six women and 20 children at the Connecticut elementary school — told friends a month before the shooting that she was concerned about her son. He had not left the house for three months, and he communicated with her only via email, she said. She was not allowed to enter his room. But despite what seemed like mental health warning signs, the police found a check in the Lanza home for a CZ 83 pistol, which Nancy Lanza intended to give to her son over the holidays, according to a report released by a Connecticut state’s attorney. The check’s date section read “Christmas Day.” “The mother wanted to buy the shooter a CZ 83 pistol for Christmas and had prepared a check for that purchase to give the shooter,” the report reads. The Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle Lanza used in the elementary school, as well as the four other weapons recovered from the crime scenes, belonged to his mother. She purchased them legally, and had a permit for their use. The report doesn’t make it clear whether Nancy Lanza had the weapons locked away in her home or whether her son had free access to them. Adam Lanza frequently went target shooting with his mother and brother between 2010 and 2012, and had taken rifle safety classes with them. Fiftytwo-year-old Nancy Lanza used target practice as a way to bond with her withdrawn and troubled son, according to a February Hartford Courant/ Frontline investigation.

INDONESIA KPK to question energy and mineral resources minister Antara
JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) intends to question Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik as a witness soon in an alleged graft case involving the Upstream Oil and Gas regulatory special task force (SKK Migas). “He will be questioned about the suspect Rudi Rubiandini,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said on Tuesday, referring to the former SKK Migas Chief, who has been named as a suspect in the case. On Friday, the KPK had imposed a six-month overseas travel ban on Jero Waciks adjutant, I Gusti Putu Ade for his alleged role in the case. Rudi was named as a suspect for allegedly accepting a bribe of US$400 thousand from the commissioner of PT Kernel Oil Private Limited, Simon Gunawan Tanjaya, through his golf trainer, Deviardi. Rudi was arrested at his house in Jl. Brawijaya, South Jakarta, on Aug. 13. Later, the KPK had also named Rudi as a suspect in the money laundering case. Following the arrest of the former SKK Migas Chief, KPK officers had
searched a number of places, including the office of the Secretary General of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Waryono Karno, from whom they seized 200 thousand US dollars. They had also recovered 127 thousand Singapore dollars, 90 thousand US dollars and a BMW large capacity motorbike at Rudis house. Later, the KPK found 350 thousand US dollars placed in a deposit box owned by Rudi at the state lender Bank Mandiri and 60 thousand Singapore dollars, 2 thousand US dollars and 180 grams of gold ingots at the SKK Migas office. Authorities at the weekend issued the highest safety alert for Mount Sinabung on the island of Sumatra after it erupted spectacularly, urging everyone in a five-kilometre (3.1mile) radius of the volcano to evacuate. On Monday, Sinabung erupted six times more, spewing columns of ash as high as 2,000 metres (6,500 feet), national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. “The number of displaced increased a lot because we lifted the alert level,” he
said, adding 17,713 people had now fled their homes up from around 12,000 the day before. “But some communities are not as affected and people are staying at home to farm and rear livestock.” Sinabung is one of dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia, which straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire”. McLaren thinks it let podium chance slip away in Brazilian GP
McLaren thinks it let the chance of a first podium finish of 2013 slip through its fingers at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Woking-based team’s campaign was the first since 1980 where it had failed to finish in the top three. But judging by the pace that Jenson Button and Sergio Perez showed at Interlagos on Sunday as they finished fourth and sixth, team principal Martin Whitmarsh thinks things could have been different if the pair had started higher than 14th and 19th. “We are happy with the job the two guys did, and it was a race where on a few occasions it got the adrenaline going,” he said. “We were racing again and it is exciting. While the clash of the national teams at Wembley last week showed Germany were a cut above England internationally, Premier League clubs have done better in this season’s duels in Europe. United beat Leverkusen 4-2 at Old Trafford, Chelsea crushed Schalke home and away, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund shared a win apiece while Bayern Munich

Leverkusen have turned the Bayer Arena into a fortress, winning their last eight Champions League group games there, and will seek to redress the balance for the Bundesliga against a United side not firing on all cylinders despite a marked improvement in results since a poor start to the season. McLaren thinks it let the chance of a first podium finish of 2013 slip through its fingers at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Woking-based team’s campaign was the first since 1980 where it had failed to finish in the top three. Geneva - The United States and Russia threw their full weight behind long-delayed Syria peace talks that the UN said finally would be held January 22, though it was not yet clear whether key sponsors of the warring sides would attend. “We haven’t established a list yet,” UN and Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said. That left open the participation of Saudi Arabia, seen as a major sponsor the majority Sunni Muslim rebels, and Iran, which steadfastly back the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which is dominated by Alawites derived from Islam’s Shiite current. “These two countries will certainly be among the possible participants,” Brahimi said after closed-door talks in Geneva with US and Russian officials. SANICA, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Just outside the rustic village, children fished in a tranquil pond bobbing with green algae and lined with willow trees, as cattle grazed nearby. Now, Rezak Motanic gazes in disbelief down a gigantic moonlike crater where the pond used to be. It’s like something from a science fiction movie: a sinkhole swallowed the water, the fish and even nearby trees. “I sat here only a day before it happened, sipping plum brandy,” Cemal Hasan said. “And then, there was panic. Fish were jumping out, and a big plum tree was pulled down like someone yanked it with a hook.” The villagers of this remote northwestern Bosnian village have been in shock since the pond vanished two weeks ago. Their pond was some 20 meters (yards) in diameter and about eight meters deep. Now, the “abyss,” as the villagers have dubbed the crater, is some 50 meters wide and 30 meters deep — and growing. Scientists say it is not uncommon that ponds and small lakes suddenly disappear. They say it could be caused by drying underground water currents, or changes in soil drainage due to irrigation. The Sanica villagers, however, are having none of the scientific explanations. “It could have been a giant cave that opened its doors,” offered Milanko Skrbic. “Or a volcano.” Another popular theory — one that experts dismiss along with the others proposed by townsfolk — is that fish could have triggered the explosion of one of several World War II German bombs believed to have been thrown into the pond by an old woman after the war. “She herself died when one of the bombs exploded in her arms,” Cemal Hasan said as he stood on the edge of the “abyss.” Another spooky explanation: The owner of the pond took it with him when he died about a month ago. “Only days before Hasan passed away he said: ‘I’ll take everything with me when I die.’ And that’s what he did,” Motanic said. “His daughter saw him walk on the lake the night he died.” Husein Nanic said it could be a sign that the end is nigh: “All sort of miracles happen before the doomsday,” he said.

The mother of mass killer Adam Lanza wrote her son a check to buy a pistol as a Christmas present in the days leading up to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, according to an official report out Monday. Nancy Lanza — who was killed by her 20-year-old son last December before he killed six women and 20 children at the Connecticut elementary school — told friends a month before the shooting that she was concerned about her son. He had not left the house for three months, and he communicated with her only via email, she said. She was not allowed to enter his room. But despite what seemed like mental health warning signs, the police found a check in the Lanza home for a CZ 83 pistol, which Nancy Lanza intended to give to her son over the holidays, according to a report released by a Connecticut state’s attorney. The check’s date section read “Christmas Day.” “The mother wanted to buy the shooter a CZ 83 pistol for Christmas and had prepared a check for that purchase to give the shooter,” the report reads. The Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle Lanza used in the elementary school, as well as the four other weapons recovered from the crime scenes, belonged to his mother. She purchased them legally, and had a permit for their use. The report doesn’t make it clear whether Nancy Lanza had the weapons locked away in her home or whether her son had free access to them. Adam Lanza frequently went target shooting with his mother and brother between 2010 and 2012, and had taken rifle safety classes with them. INDONESIA KPK to question energy and mineral resources minister Antara
JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) intends to question Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik as a witness soon in an alleged graft case involving the Upstream Oil and Gas regulatory special task force (SKK Migas). “He will be questioned about the suspect Rudi Rubiandini,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said on Tuesday, referring to the former SKK Migas Chief, who has been named as a suspect in the case. On Friday, the KPK had imposed a six-month overseas travel ban on Jero Waciks adjutant, I Gusti Putu Ade for his alleged role in the case. Rudi was named as a suspect for allegedly accepting a bribe of US$400 thousand from the commissioner of PT Kernel Oil Private Limited, Simon Gunawan Tanjaya, through his golf trainer, Deviardi. Rudi was arrested at his house in Jl. Brawijaya, South Jakarta, on Aug. 13. Later, the KPK had also named Rudi as a suspect in the money laundering case. Following the arrest of the former SKK Migas Chief, KPK officers had
searched a number of places, including the office of the Secretary General of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Waryono Karno, from whom they seized 200 thousand US dollars. They had also recovered 127 thousand Singapore dollars, 90 thousand US dollars and a BMW large capacity motorbike at Rudis house. Later, the KPK found 350 thousand US dollars placed in a deposit box owned by Rudi at the state lender Bank Mandiri and 60 thousand Singapore dollars, 2 thousand US dollars and 180 grams of gold ingots at the SKK Migas office. Waryono has been questioned twice as a witness in the case. He was questioned about the money given to Rudi. In addition, the minimum wage was incompatible with the high regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Bali when compared to other regions in Indonesia. On the other hand, the local government had only focused on the interests of investors without being accompanied with the efforts to welfare the workers. LONDON - Rebekah Brooks, former head of Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper group, told Eimear Cook, the ex-wife of golfer Colin Montgomerie, it was “easy” to listen to other people’s voicemails, Cook told a London court on Monday. Brooks, who is on trial alongside seven other defendants, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to phone-hacking at the News of the World tabloid when she was editor, illegal payments to officials for stories and impeding police inquiries. The prosecution told the jury earlier in the trial that the comments made by Brooks to Cook over lunch in 2005 about intercepting voicemails showed the editor had known that phone-hacking was going on under her watch. Brooks denies this. Brooks’ lawyer Jonathan Laidlaw accused Cook of making up the conversation and other details about the lunch, a suggestion Cook denied. Brooks, known as Rebekah Wade prior to her second marriage in 2009, was editor of the now-defunct Sunday tabloid News of the World, then of its sister daily paper the Sun, before rising to be chief executive of News International, the British newspaper arm of Murdoch’s News Corp empire. Appearing as a prosecution witness, Cook was asked about an occasion in September 2005 when she and Brooks had lunch along with two of Cook’s friends, a couple called the Manoukians. PIN CODES “The bit I remember the most is the topic of how easy it is to listen to other people’s voicemails as long as they haven’t changed their factorysetting pin codes,” Cook told the court. Asked who had said that, she answered: “Rebekah”.
“She said she couldn’t believe that famous people who have all those advisers didn’t know you have to personalise your pin codes to make their voicemail secure,” Cook said, when asked to elaborate on how Brooks had expressed herself. Cook also said that while discussing this topic, Brooks had recounted “in parenthesis” a story about Paul McCartney and his then-fiancee Heather Mills having a row in a hotel that had resulted in an engagement ring being thrown out of the window. “I was under the impression she was talking about Paul McCartney’s phone that hadn’t had its pin code changed,” Cook said. Asked to describe Brooks’ attitude while talking about these matters, Cook said: “Quite flippant”. “She told me how ludicrous it was how people weren’t aware of the simple way to protect the privacy of their mobiles.” Laidlaw accused Cook of telling lies to the jury. Cook had told the court earlier that Brooks had talked during the lunch about a recent row between herself and her then-husband, actor Ross Kemp, that had been reported in her own newspaper, the Sun. Cook said Brooks had laughed about this. Laidlaw put it to her that an alleged assault by Brooks on Kemp that was reported in the newspapers did not take place until several weeks after the lunch, so her account of what Brooks had said could not possibly be true. Cook did not offer any explanation for the discrepancy in the dates but stuck by her story. “I did not make it up. I have no grievance against Mrs Brooks whatsoever,” she said. Operating permit of private hospitals in Buleleng is threatened to be revoked. It happens because the four private hospitals in Buleleng do not have permanent doctors and only rely on on-call doctors from the county hospital. It was revealed in a roundtable discussion held by Bali Post regarding the Buleleng community health development at Rangon Sunset, Penimbangan Beach, Singaraja, Monday (Nov 25). In the discussion, a member of Commission D of the Buleleng house, Made Turkini, said the conferment of permit to private hospitals should be tightened. It had become a common knowledge that most private hospitals
employed on-call doctors from the county hospital. He himself claimed to have discovered a case of maternal mortality in a private hospital. Allegedly, the case occurred because the woman did not get a doctor’s handling after surgery. “It happened because the doctor was indeed on-call,” he said. In response to the case, the Head of Buleleng Health Agency, Made Puja, recognized that pri-
vate hospitals in Buleleng today still relied on doctors of county hospital. According to the rules, a private hospital should have a minimum of two permanent doctors. However, among the four existing private hospitals in Buleleng, none had owned a permanent doctor. “All private hospitals in Buleleng have not owned a permanent doctor,’ he said. Puja said that his party would
discipline the permits the control against private hospitals in Buleleng. They were expected to appoint at least two permanent doctors at the local hospital so they did not rely on the doctors of county hospital. When private hospitals would like to extend their permit, his party would firmly ask the hospitals to recruit permanent doctors. If they did not have a permanent doctor, his party would be forced not to extend the hospital permit or the permit would be revoked. “Private hospitals renew their permit every five years. Later, if they do not have a permanent doctor, their permits will not be extended,” he said. According to Puja, getting a permanent doctor was actually a simple mat-
ter for private hospitals. For example, the hospital could recruit the retired civil servant doctors. However, he knew the reason why it was not carried out. “Actually, private hospitals can recruit doctors who have retired from the county hospital, but it was not carried out,” he said. Meanwhile, the Director of Buleleng Hospital, Gede Wiartana, said the doctors on duty in the hospital were indeed allowed to practice in private hospitals provided that the doctors still gave priority to services in the county hospital. Compensation sluggish, road access of housing complex blocked Tabanan (Bali Post)—
A dispute of resident with the project investor ending in the blockage happened again in Tabanan. Since the land compensation was sluggish, the road to the housing complex at Bongan village, Tabanan, was blocked, Monday (Nov 25). Landowner, Nengah Sudarma, 60, was forced to block it because the demand for compensation to the investor came to a deadlock. The man from Grogak Gede hamlet, Delod Peken village, admitted to use four concrete beams after making coordination with his lawyer. “We’ve been making mediation for 8 times in the headman office. However, we always come to a dead end. The compensation of investor is not disbursed,” he said. According to Sudarma, he only hoped the housing investor was willing to have a discussion and talk about the compensation because the land use for road access to residential area was privately owned. The lawyer of Sudarma, Junaidi, asserted that the blockage was set on private property. So, it was not public road access. He said it was intended to touch the heart of the housing developer to mediate. “All this time, the mediation always comes to a dead end. Even, the developer did not come in
the last mediation whereas the land in use for the road access belongs to our client,” he said. The land, he said, was also officially certified. On that account, his client was still entitled to use or demand for compensation for the land. He described there were three housing developers using the land owned by his client. Of the land used for the road access, nearly half belonged to his client. “Unluckily, there is no any compensation,” he explained. Junaidi said the mediation with the developers had been made for several times, including the one made at local headman office. However, they did not find any solution, while the housing project still went ahead. Actually, his client had never mentioned the amount of proposed compensation. He just needed the good faith to meet and make mediation and then discuss about the compensation. As observation of Bali Post, the blockage used four mid-size concrete beams. The concrete beams were placed exactly in the middle of the driveway with the width of nearly 2.5 meters. As a result, four-wheeled vehicles could not pass. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Madonna is in Haiti to visit humanitarian projects that ex-husband Sean Penn has been overseeing since the Caribbean nation’s devastating earthquake in 2010, the actor said Monday. Penn said in a brief phone call to The Associated Press that he had invited Madonna, with whom he has “maintained a great friendship over the years,” to visit several times and that she had come with her son Rocco. NEW YORK — U2 frontman Bono feels optimistic that his musical, “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark” will continue to thrive after the show turns the lights out on Broadway early next year. “When you think of the difficult birth that we had with ‘Turn Off the Dark,’” he said, “it’s worked out so well.” “Three hugely successful years, and then it’s off to Germany, it’s off to Las Vegas,” Bono said Monday night on the red carpet for “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”

DENPASAR - Indonesia has tremendous potential to develop the meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) tourism. Unfortunately, it has not been worked on maximally. Director of Special Interest, Convention, Incentive and Event Development, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Akhyaruddin, said the handling of incentive tourism in particular was still far behind the other countries. gFor the management of incentive tourism as a separate part of MICE, we are relatively underdeveloped. Indonesia is ranked 41st out of 99th countries while specifically for Bali and Jakarta it was ranked 39th and 41st among 182 cities that have developed the incentive tourism,h said Akhyaruddin amidst the workshop on the management of incentive tourist
destination in Denpasar. He explained that incentive posed an award given by company to employees having an outstanding achievement. It included the activities such as holiday gift to the world destinations like Bali. Actually, he said, Indonesia had a great opportunity to work on the incentive tourism with the advantages such as being the country with many
islands and various tribes that could become tourist attractions. Unfortunately, the tourism stakeholders had not been able to capture the opportunities and less focus on working on the incentive tourism. Even, they had not owned a comprehensive understanding on the concept of MICE tourism. So far, they always combined it into MICE as a single unit whereas MICE had four sections namely meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition. gHere, we have asked each region or tourist destination to see the potential and strength of the section where the focus should be directed to. For example, if the strength of a tourist destination lies in the incentive it must be focused and the others must serve as sup-
porters. If the four sections become the focus, it will make people confused,h he said. Bali was expected to become one of the driving indicators of incentive tourism in Indonesia so that incentive travelers that had been spending holidays in Bali were also expected to visit other regions in Indonesia. He explained that employees of world companies conducting incentive activities in Bali or Indonesia would be staying and shopping in Bali. It would provide multiplier effect on the peoplefs economy in Bali including the other regions of Indonesia they visited. Chairman of the Indonesia Congress and Convention Association (INCCA) of Bali Chapter, IB Surakusuma, said that Bali should
be able to continue working on the incentive tourism. Incentive travelers denoting the companyfs employees would be provided with a lot of money when going on holiday in Bali. He believed the money would be used to buy souvenirs. However, there were still many obstacles, for example, in working on the American market. Incentive travelers from the American region took a long time to arrive in Bali. Meanwhile, though Australian market was still applying travel warning adding to travel advisory, they would remain to spend holiday to Bali. gTo work on incentive travelers, it is required a special strategy in order to drive the meeting and convention tourism,h he concluded.
