‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Modern Family’ dominate Emmys

LOS ANGELES - Cult TV drama series “Breaking Bad” and comedy hit “Modern Family” were the big winners Monday at the annual Emmys, which also paid tribute to late Hollywood icon Robin Williams. Royal feud saga “Game of Thrones,” which had garnered the most nominations, went home with none of the big prizes from the 66th Primetime Emmys, television’s equivalent of the Oscars. Other highlights of the show included a passionate on-stage kiss between Bryan Cranston and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and a bizarre segment in which curvy Colombian actress Sofia Vergara rotated on a platform.

“This is... a wonderful time to be working in television,” said “Breaking Bad” director Vince Gilligan, accepting the top prize -- best drama -- at the climax of the three-hour show in Los Angeles. “Breaking Bad,” about chemistry teacher-turned-drugs-kingpin Walter White, also took the best drama actor award for Cranston, and the best supporting prizes for Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn.

NUSA DUA - The strengthening of democracy in Indonesia, including the process of the country’s latest presidential election this year, has been remarkably supported by the role of the media, a minister has said. “Indonesia, as the third largest democracy country in the world is characterized, among others, by its media environment and dynamism,” Indonesian minister for communication and information technology, Tifatul Sembiring, said when opening a global media forum on Tuesday. The forum is attended by some 300 international media representatives, journalists, government officials and academicians. The three-day event that will last until Friday is a collaboration between the Indonesian government and the United Nations Educational,

Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Jakarta office, taking the theme “The role of media in realizing the future we want for all.” Minister Sembiring said Indonesia has just gone through a peaceful democratic leadership transition.

“The entire process has been worrying and I must honestly say disturbing as well, but at the same time it has been encouraging because the people have spoken.” The pros and cons and dynamics of information voiced out by the media especially the social media that have been truly remarkable. Everybody can say and participate in the process disregard of the right or wrong opinions they had voiced out. “In this country, like in many democratic nations, the result is not as important as the participatory principle. Let the people speak and be heard. In the end, they will understand whatever the outcome will be,” Sembiring pointed out. Giving an idea on the strong role

played by the media on the strengthening of democracy, Sembiring added Indonesia has thousands of conventional media including broadcasting, print and millions of ICT and social media. “Television ownership, tv and radio stations, including the print media are still growing incrementally,” he said. On print media, Minister Sembiring emphasized it is still playing significant roles particularly towards a more literate public. Media penetration in Indonesia, as follows: penetration almost reach 95%, radio 47%, internet 29%, newspaper 25% and magazine 13. Media, particularly broadcasting and ICT based in unlike any other enterprises can only operate and

function because the public give free space and their time. In other word, the public pays the media with their space and time. The minister further said, the most remarkable media environment particularly in relations to the media and democracy has been the key. This is really apparent in three major aspects of democratic communication. The first aspect is the freedom of speech and press. The second aspect is the participation of the people and the third aspect is the open government or a government official who is always willing to listen to its people, transparent and empowering the people to lead the democratic process peacefully. Tourism stakeholders complained on Kintamani tourist attraction Troop rally for VVIP’s UNAOC Conference

DENPASAR - Troop rally for VVIP security in the framework of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Conference was held at the Nusa Dua Lagoon Square, Monday (Aug 25). It involved the personnel of the IX/ Udayana Military Regional Command, Bali Police and others. Chief of Bali Police, Albertus Julius Benny Mokalu, acting as chief of the rally read the mandate of the Command of the IX/ Udayana Military Regional Commander Wisnu Bawa Tenaya. In the mandate was delivered that Indonesia was the first country in Asia selected to host the international forum. Implementation of the UNAOC Conference would take place for two days namely on August 29-30, 2014. The 6th UNAOC Conference whose membership was not restricted by national or political boundaries took the theme ‘Unity in

Diversity’ or Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. The theme taken from the motto of Indonesia was very suitable as a means to share experiences on pluralism in various countries. “The participants scheduled to present at the conference, among others, will include the UN Secretary General, the president of the RI and several international youth delegates,” he said. He explained that pluralism did not make a difference, but rather served as a means to achieve peace. That was why all the members of the conference agreed with the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’ meaning to be different but was still one, too. “Since this conference is so important and strategic in bringing about world peace, so the implementation should be successful. In other words, the whole series of activities can run maximally,” he said. As one of the efforts, he added, it was implemented the VVIP security to all participants. Lack of repair shop at rural areas, in urban areas even proliferates

BANGLI - Bangli is now increasingly highlighted. After the public facilities in the area of Penelokan deemed slum, it is now the turn of safety facility namely repair shop considered to inadequately spread in Bangli, especially in rural areas leading to the Penelokan area. Lacking of repair shops especially those for motorcycle in Bangli is often complained by motorcyclists, where Bangli has various tourist areas often visited by foreign and local travelers riding a motorcycle. It was justified by a motorcyclist who wanted to visit the Penelokan tourist area, I Gede Bagiarta, 26, from Gianyar. He said there were only a few repair shops in the area

of Bangli especially at road section leading to Penelokan tourist area. According to him, it was widely available in urban areas, but very rare in rural areas. The presence of repair shop was judged so important considering the main road to the tourist area was far enough from the town. “Yeah, I saw very few repair shops in rural areas around here. Maybe there is only one or two units, but a lot can be found in Bangli town,” he said, Friday (Aug 22). When monitored in the urban areas of Bangli, many motorcycle repair shops could be found, but only a few in rural areas. DENPASAR - Condition of the tourist area of Penelokan, Kintamani, got criticism from tourism businesspeople. Other than looking poorly maintained, the tourist object offering the panoramic attraction of the Mount Batur and Lake Batur also looks dirty and smelly. “What happens today? When travelers stop at Penelokan, they will witness incredibly contradictory view. Magnificent panorama must be adjacent to the very chaotic, poorly arranged and vile scenery around the stop point. As a result, enjoying the view becomes something inconvenient,” complained Chairman of the Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) of Bali Chapter, Ketut Ardana, in Denpasar. According to him, previously the sidewalk along the Penelokan had been good enough as arranged openly. Thus, travelers who stopped at the location could freely enjoy the panoramic view and take pictures of Mount Batur or Lake Batur from any angle. “However, when we make a visit these days and stop at the location, other than finding the sidewalk filled with concrete bench, the southern side of sidewalk is also made a barrier or fenced with concrete. As a result, the sidewalk previously being open and very convenient then turned narrower, chaotic and dirty,” he said. Not to mention, he said the market previously located near the Museum of Volcanology was relocated to the sidewalk. placed haphazardly had made Penelokan look very chaotic. “It is not appropriate if Kintamani is referred to as one of the tourism icons of Bali, if the condition is like that,” he said. Not only that, the caves on the southern side of the road could actually become a point of interest for travelers. Unluckily, they were stacked with sales equipment by market traders. As a result, it increasingly made Penelokan shambles. “Tourism industry commonly escorting travelers to Kintamani begins to shout. So, please do not wait until the domestic and foreign tour operators recommend not to visit Kintamani. Of course it is very distressing and detrimental for the tourism industry, local communities and tax collection,” he explained. He mentioned, Penelokan denoting a tourist destination was also criticized related to souvenir hawkers that made some travelers feel disturbed and uncomfortable despite the condition was getting better. Besides, the buildings of restaurant on the cliff edge towards the view of Mount Batur and Lake Batur also tended to proliferate where the buildings averagely used concrete piles. Definitely, this condition hampered the sights of travelers who passed through the road.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Mobile use bad for school test scores

TOKYO - Children who spend more than four hours a day on their mobile phone perform significantly worse on school tests than those who are limited to just 30 minutes, a Japanese government survey has found. Among the nearly one-in-nine 14 and 15-year-olds who use their handheld device for at least four hours daily, grade scores suffer an average 14 percentage points across all subjects. The deficit rises to more than 18 points in mathematics, figures from Japan’s education ministry showed. Nearly half of all third-year junior high school students questioned spend more than an hour a day on their phones, browsing websites, sending e-mails and playing games. Less than a quarter of those in the age group do not have a mobile. Smartphone use is also prevalent among 11-year-olds, the survey found, with 54 percent of those in their final year of elementary school having a phone of their own. SEOUL — LG Electronics Inc. announced two new giant OLED TVs with ultra-high definition screens Monday, sticking with its strategy of using the exceptionally expensive OLED display technology. The South Korean company said it will ship 65inch OLED TVs starting September in South Korea, Europe and North America. A 77-inch model will hit shelves later this year. While major TV makers are pushing to make ultra HD TVs mainstream, they use LCD screens. The super-high resolution picture, also known as 4K, packs four times more pixels than regular HD televisions. Making ultra HD quality TVs with OLED screens remain costly. LG’s 65-inch model will cost 12 million won ($11,765). Other types of ultra HD televisions sell for less than $3,000. OLED features deeper color saturation and a sharper image quality than LCD. But for years, its cost and high production error rate prevented the technology from catching on among mainstream consumers. LG said it is committed to OLED because the cost will come down and its advanced screen will eventually replace LCD screens. It forecasts that OLED TV sales will overtake LCD TV sales “within a few years.” “OLED is where we must head next,” said Ha Hyun-hwoi, head of LG’s TV business. “It is a matter of time.” LG’s aggressive bet on OLED TVs is in contrast with its rival Samsung Electronics Co. After rolling out a 55-inch curved TV that uses an OLED display last year, Samsung has not announced an upgrade to its OLED TV for this year. Diesel turns scarce, fire brigade confused Bali Post

SEMARAPURA - Scarcity of diesel fuel on Monday (Aug 25) occurred in Klungkung. Almost all petrol stations in Klungkung ran out of diesel stock. As a result, a number of diesel-fueled trucks lined up to get diesel. It was unclear what caused the diesel stock scarcity in Klungkung. However, some truck drivers estimated if the diesel scarcity occurred because there would be price increase for diesel. Interestingly, a number of sand trucks should hang out at petrol station to get diesel followed by the government-owned vehicles like the fire trucks. From observation at petrol station on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, it was known there were eight sand trucks parked at petrol station because they ran out of diesel. All the trucks had started parking at the petrol station from 8 o’clock in the morning. Unfortunately, they had not got any diesel until Monday noon. Even, as waiting for the arrival of diesel so long, one of them was forced to ask for some amount of diesel to other truck driver so that his truck would not break down on the way. One of the truck drivers, Muhamad Ali, when met at the petrol station said that he had parked his truck from 9 o’clock at the petrol station. It was done because almost all the petrol stations he got in along the Jalan Bypass IB Mantra were out of diesel stock. Similarly,

he did not know about the cause of the diesel scarcity. However, he estimated the diesel scarcity happened because the government would increase the price of diesel. Ali himself claimed to come from Padanggalak and was about to take sand in Karangasem. But if he did not get diesel in Klungkung, he admitted to be back to Padanggalak. “Incidentally, I still have a bit of diesel. So, after waiting for so long without getting diesel, I will be back,” he said. Meanwhile, one of the firefighters, Astika, said that the fire truck of Klungkung had been hanging out from the morning to get diesel. He also hoped the petrol stations in Klungkung soon got diesel supply. Otherwise, it would result in long congestion at a number of road sections in front of the petrol station. “We in the fire brigade also worry. Afghan presidential contender threatens boycott

KABUL — An adviser to a leading Afghan presidential contender, Abdullah Abdullah, says the candidate is threatening to boycott the country’s ballot audit, which has been mired in obstacles. The complicated, U.N.-supervised audit of the 8 million votes from the June presidential runoff has been underway in Kabul for weeks. The process followed allegations of vote fraud on both sides and is meant to decide whether Abdullah, a former foreign minister, or former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai will replace President Hamid Karzai.

Fazel Ahmad Manawi told reporters on Tuesday that if Abdullah’s concerns are not addressed by Wednesday morning, he would pull out of the audit. Manawi said the election commission ignored their complaints about fraudulent ballots. If the recount is halted, it would create another major political stalemate for Afghanistan.

Purchases were up 8.1 percent in the South, a region that usually accounts for more than half of all new-home sales. Inventory of new homes on the market rose to six months, a level last reached in October 2011. The median price of a new home last month was $269,800, up 2.9 percent over the past 12 months. But the steady rebound in construction coming out of the Great Recession has stalled. The peaceful action planting mangrove seedlings involved around 70 youths from various villages in Jembrana. A similar action was also previously undertaken in the mangrove forest of Perancak. GPJ Coordinator, I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik, said if the action was spontaneously initiated and carried out as a form of environmental care. “It poses our real measure to take care of the nature of Bali we love,” he said. From the morning to midday on Sunday (Aug 24), the young men planted about 2,000 mangrove seedlings. The movement named ‘save mangrove, reject Benoa Bay reclamation’ was also filled with spreading banner on

the rejection against the reclamation around the mangroves. “This is the second action. Previously, we also did greening in mangrove forests of Perancak. Hopefully, this effort continues rolling until the government realizes and responds to the public rejection,” added the man from Dauhwaru. Officials in the Netherlands, where the majority of Flight 17 victims lived, say that Malaysia Airlines has been making $50,000 payments to the families without admitting any wrongdoing in the crash. Such payments may create goodwill, lawyers say, but they are not likely to discourage some families from seeking more than the amount promised under an international treaty — about $174,000. Since the early days of commercial aviation, international agreements have governed compensation for crash victims. It is a no-fault system — the airline pays a standard compensation even if is blameless. Under a treaty called the Montreal Convention, families can sue for more if the airline or another party was negligent. Aviation-accident lawyers say it would be almost impossible to collect damages from Russia or the pro-Russian rebels accused of shooting down the plane with a far-reaching surfaceto-air missile. Malaysia Airlines will be left as the prime — maybe the only — defendant, and lawsuits are likely to hinge on the plane’s planned route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17. (The family of) one gets multi millions, and the other one gets $75,000,” said Justin Green, an aviation attorney whose firm represented families of victims of Pan Am 103, bombed over Scotland in 1988. For some relatives of those on Flight 17, the pain is still too raw to decide whether to go to court.

NEW YORK — Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law should be sentenced to life in prison for his role as al-Qaida’s spokesman after the Sept. 11 attacks, when he made “bone-chilling threats” against America, prosecutors said in court papers filed Monday. The government said a life sentence for Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, whose words were “inciting, murderous, and hateful,” would send an important deterrent message to would-be terrorists. “Terrorism is a crime with high recidivism rates and rehabilitation is notoriously difficult,” prosecutors said. The papers were filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan a month before a sentencing scheduled for Sept. 23. Abu Ghaith’s defense lawyer, Stanley Cohen, had urged Judge Lewis A. Kaplan earlier this month to sentence his client to 15 years in prison, saying it was sufficient. Abu Ghaith was convicted in March of charges that included conspiracy to kill Americans and providing support to al-Qaida. Abu Ghaith is a Kuwaiti-born imam who married bin Laden’s eldest daughter about five years ago. He is the highest-ranking al-Qaida figure brought to trial on U.S. soil since the 2001 attacks.

JAKARTA - Five cleaners will go on trial this week over allegations of sexual assault at one of Indonesia’s most prestigious international schools, the first cases in a longrunning scandal to go to court. The crisis at the Jakarta International School (JIS), which began with public allegations in April that the cleaning staff assaulted a six-year-old boy, has rocked an institution that has been a favourite with expatriates in the capital for more than 60 years. The Mercedes Formula 1 team risks finding itself in a “big mess” if its management does not get the feud between its drivers under control quickly, warns McLaren’s Eric Boullier. Following a controversial coming together between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at the Belgian Grand Prix, Mercedes chiefs are set for urgent talks with its battling duo to try to work out where the team goes from here. Mercedes accepts that it cannot let the breakdown in relations that has now caused trouble on track to allow Red Bull rival Daniel Ricciardo to snatch the title following his latest F1 win in Belgium. “There is always a risk,” said McLaren racing director Boullier while speaking to AUTOSPORT about whether there was a danger of Mercedes’ troubles derailing its title campaign. “If there is a very serious degradation in the relationship between the drivers and between the drivers and the team, you will end up with a big, big mess.” Boullier concedes, however, that there is no obvious path that Mercedes

can take to deal with the matter - especially because the crash between its drivers came so early in the race. When asked how the team can control Hamilton and Rosberg from now on, Boullier said: “You can’t. It is unfortunate it happened on lap two but it is a racing incident. “If you watch the last races it has happened many times. So it is unfortunate, and I understand why they may be upset because they missed a one-two result, but this is racing.” Boullier also suggests that Mercedes has to decide whether to have a media blackout about how it has resolved matter, or that it needs to explain what action it has taken - which could risk fuelling the controversy further. “It depends on how much coverage you want after in the press,” he said. “If you start to blame the drivers then obviously it is a policy that I will not recommend. “It is better to clear the air outside of the track, but I am happy to not have that problem to manage. In the end you tend to think you are shooting yourself - but this is part of racing as well.”

CAF said it was only the first sanction and Kabylie faces more punishment. CAF said the 24-year-old Ebosse suffered a head trauma and internal bleeding after being hit by a “sharp object.” It appeared to be hurled by his team’s supporters after a 2-1 loss. FIFA President Sepp Blatter said it was “intolerable that a spectator caused the death of a player.”

Argentine Robertino Pugliara opened the scoring with a brilliant scissor-kick strike after two minutes and went on to complete a hattrick for the Indonesian champions, who ran the defending champions’ backline ragged. Persipura were 3-0 up at the break after two from Pugliara and one from captain Boaz Solossa with Titus Bonai adding a fourth in

the second period before Kuwait finally replied through Iranian World Cup striker Reza Ghoochannejhad. The goal left the tie at 6-4 with 25 minutes remaining and Kuwait needing two more to go through but those ambitions were quickly crushed a minute later when Pugliara completed his hat-trick with a curling finish. A tired Kuwait side, clearly feeling the effects of the long journey across Asia, were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes remaining when Fahad Hamoud was sent off as their discipline deserted them.

It was a miserable showing for Kuwait, the competition’s most successful team having also won the trophy in 2009 and reached the final in 2011. Substitute Ferinando Pahabol then completed the rout in stoppage time as he burst through unchallenged for a sixth that made Persipura the first Indonesian side to reach the last four of the competition. Persipura will now aim to go one better and become the first side from outside West Asia to reach the final of the AFC Cup, which began in 2004.
