New biography claims more Salinger books due out Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — The authors of a new J.D. Salinger biography are claiming they have cracked one of publishing’s greatest mysteries: What “The Catcher in the Rye” novelist was working on during the last half century of his life. Starting between 2015 and 2020, a series of posthumous Salinger releases are planned, according to “Salinger,” co-written by David Shields and Shane Salerno and scheduled to be published Sept. 3. The Associated Press obtained an early copy. Salerno’s documentary on the author opens Sept. 6. In January, it will air on PBS as an installment of “American Masters.” Providing by far the most detailed report of previously unreleased material, the book’s authors cite “two independent and separate sources” who they
say have “documented and verified” the information. One of the Salinger books would center on “Catcher” protagonist Holden Caulfield and his family, including a revised version of an early, unpublished story “The Last and Best of the Peter Pans.” Other volumes would draw on Salinger’s World War II years and his immersion in Eastern religion. A publication called “The Family Glass” would feature additional stories about the Glass family of “Franny and Zooey” and other Salinger works. “Salinger” does not identify a prospective publisher. Spokesman Terry Adams of Little, Brown and Company, which released “Catcher” and Salinger’s three other books, declined to comment Sunday. Salinger’s son, Matt Salinger, who helps run the author’s literary estate, was not immediately available for comment.

NEW YORK — “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” served up a second helping at the U.S. box office, topping the weekend with $17 million according to studio estimates Sunday. That was enough to lead all films on a late August weekend known as a dumping ground for studios following their summer blockbusters and before the start of the fall movie-going season. Daniels’ historical drama about a long-serving White House butler, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, last weekend opened with $24.6 million for the Weinstein Co. Three new releases failed to catch on. The teen fantasy “Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” adapted from the popular young adult book series, opened tepidly in third
with $9.3 million on the weekend and $14 million since opening Wednesday. With franchise hopes, Sony Screen Gems has already started production on a sequel, again starring Lily Collins as a NewYork teenager who discovers she has mystical powers. Edgar Wright’s pub-crawl-gone-wrong comedy “The World’s End” opened with $8.9 million for Focus Features. That was a better start for “The World’s End,” which stars Simon Pegg, than Wright’s last film with the actor: 2007’s “Hot Fuzz.” It opened with $5.8 million. Playing in 1,549
theaters, “The World’s End” did its business in less than half the theaters of “The Butler” or “Mortal Instruments.” Despite good reviews, Lionsgate’s home-invasion horror flick “You’re Next” opened weakly with $7.1 million. With a cumulative total of $52.3 million, “The Butler” is headed for a domestic haul of $100 million. It has followed the release pattern of another movie about race and domestic service: the 2011 drama “The Help,” also released in August. The Weinstein Co. hopes that “The Butler” will similarly lead to Oscar nominations. Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, attributed the success of “The Butler” particularly to the marketing power of Winfrey and a savvy choice of a release date with little competition.

NEW YORK CITY - Justin Timberlake stole the show late Sunday at the MTV video Music Awards ceremony, singing several of his top hits and surprising fans with reunion of his old band N Sync. Timberlake, wildly cheered and applauded by the crowd packed into the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, received the night’s most important prize -- the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award for career achievements. He also won the Video of the Year award for the song “Mirrors.” Timberlake wowed his fans by singing a medley of his best-known tunes, including “SexyBack,” “Cry me a River,” “Senorita,” “Suit and Tie,” and “Rock your Body” -- then
the four members of his former group joined him to perform two of N Sync’s best-known hits, “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye.” The 1990s hit boy band broke up on 2002. The packed arena was thrilled, and stars like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez stood and danced at their seats. “I don’t deserve this award but I’m not going to give it back,” Timberlake said as he accepted the prize.
Late night TV comedian Jimmy Fallon, who hosted the ceremony, described Timberlake as a “legend” and dubbed him the “President of Pop.” Singer Bruno Mars won an award for Best Male Video for his hit “Locked Out of Heaven,” while country/pop diva Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video award for her song “I Knew You Were Trouble.” “I want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I’ve got one of these,” she said as she accepted the award. The TV cameras then focused on Swift’s ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, a member of the British hit boy band One Direction.
The award for Best Pop Video went to Swift’s gal pal Selena Gomez -- delivered to her by the five One Direction boys -- for the visuals to her song “Come & Get It.” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took home an award for Best Video with a Social Message -- “Same love” -- about legalizing same-sex marriage. “ Stars that performed at the event included Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga. Katy Perry sang from a mock boxing ring set up under the Brooklyn bridge. She then stripped down to what appeared to be her underwear and remained on the stage, gyrating her hips and using a large foam hand as a sex prop, for a raunchy performance of “Blurred Lines” along with singer Robin Thicke. Lady Gaga opened the show with her new single “Applause,” and changed into outlandish costumes before ending in a bikini of giant seashells which she wore for the rest of the night. A suitcase containing cellular phone stirs traders Gianyar (Bali Post)—
Terror act occurred at Sukawati Art Market on Sunday (Aug 25). An unclaimed suitcase alleged to contain bomb made local traders at the Sukawati Art Market and Sukawati Public Market restless. The orange suitcase had been inspected by metal detector by the Bomb Squad of Bali Police Mobile Brigade. As a result, in the bag was just found a Nokia cellular phone with SIM card along with some phone numbers. Suspicion against the suitcase measuring approximately 80 x 40 cm occurred around 10:00 a.m. Initially, one of the traders of the Sukawati Art Market, I Made Budiarta, 40, from Gelumpang hamlet, Sukawati, accidentally saw a suitcase when going to put the offerings in the Padmasana shrine of the local market. After seeing a suitcase upright put neatly, Budiarta then told the staff of the Sukawati Art Market, namely Made Mudita and Wayan Eka Selamet. Both staff then checked the suitcase. According to the testimony of Mudita, the suitcase was placed in front of the market, in the north of a dust bin, adjacent to the Jalan Raya Sukawati. When wishing to have a closer look at the suitcase, his friend
Selamet was not allowed. For safety, the suitcase finding was then reported to the Traffic Police Post in the Sukawati Art Market and subsequently was reported to Sukawati Police. Similarly, police officers did not dare not to open the suitcase haphazardly. Police officers then installed police line to keep people away from the location. All the traders in the market were suggested to stay away from the location to avoid any undesirable things. Another tense ambience occurred again, when the Bomb Squad of the Bali Police Mobile Brigade came down to location and conducted an examination against the suitcase and the contents. Besides, police also involved Canine Squad. Having been detected with
the help of IT device, the suitcase was then secured and taken to Police Headquarters for further inspection. At the end, only a cellular phone was found in the suitcase. Operations Section Head of the Gianyar Police, I Gusti Agung Adnyana, said his party would track the suitcase owner. Meanwhile, Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of the Gianyar Police, Nengah Sadiarta, accompanied by Criminal Detective Unit of Sukawati Police, Gde Sudyatmaja, stated to have checked the cellular phone found in the mysterious suitcase. The number was no longer active. There was possibility that his party would ask the help of cyber teams to help make the investigation, he explained. (kmb16)
The utility excavation project in Southern Badung reaped criticism. Aside from causing the area chaotic and damage to roads, the alternate projects are considered as evidence of less coordination among the agencies. Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta, said on Sunday (Aug 25) that his party actually did not question about the existence of the excavation project as it was related to the service to community. However, he even wondered why an accomplished project at one point was even dismantled again for the benefit of the other projects. He gave an example the project on Jalan Raya Kedonganan. Within a month, there had been two excavation projects performed alternately. The smooth road having been paved after the cable installation project was even re-excavated for pipe installation. “Before a month of completing the road pavement for cable installation, it’s now resumed with another excavation,” he said. He said the overlapping excavation projects in Southern Badung had repeatedly reaped the public criticism. Moreover, the projects led to traffic congestion and were accused of wasting budget, primarily for the road maintenance. In the future, said Sumerta, the government should have a clear masterplan on cable and pipeline utility. Moreover, the Badung government had a discourse on the establishment of a special channel for cable and pipeline installation. Relevant agencies were also expected to coordinate one another so that the excavation project would no longer result in the same problems as today. Meanwhile, the authority of the Badung Municipal Waterworks or PDAM Tirta Mangutama as the owner of the excavation project at Kedonganan apologized to the people that had been disturbed during the construction project at the local area. Director of the PDAM Tirta Mangutama, IB Wardana, said his party had made coordination with relevant agencies before the construction. Orange farmers in Kintamani can now smile back happily. At the level of farmers, the price of Kintamani orange is currently rising. It reaches IDR 7,000 per kilogram which previously has dropped to the price range of IDR 5,000 per kilogram. One of the local farmers, Ketut Redana, said the price increase of Kintamani orange amidst the rising prices of basic needs could make the farmers slightly smile. Such price increase was admitted to have begun before the Eid holidays. “The increase has been taking place from a few days before the Eid,” he said. He said at the farmer level, the price of Kintamani orange could reach IDR 7,000 per kilogram. He had confidence the price of Kintamani orange outside Bali could exceed that price. All this time, the Kintamani orange as the crop of farmers had been marketed in Bali and outside Bali including the areas such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang and other cities. He added if the price of Kintamani orange could remain at IDR 7,000/kg, the orange farmers could be pretty advantaged. Nevertheless, sometimes the price of orange in the market was unpredictable. A total of 193 mangrove seeds were planted by a team of 20 people at Suwung Kauh area in Denpasar, Bali. The Mangrove Reforestation Project is supported by Bali Regional Mangrove Management Centre Region 1 and in line with Ministry of Forestry program. The role of mangroves is to provide coastal protection against the actions of waves, wind and water. As widely reported, extensive areas of mangroves can help reduce the loss of life and damage caused by tsunamis by taking the first brunt of the impact and by dissipating the energy of the wave as it passes through the mangrove area. “Suwung is the perfect location for our program as it is located only ± 8 kilometers from EDEN Hotel Kuta Bali. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Hyperloop’ travel idea gains fans, if not backers

Now the race is on. A U.S. firm hustled out a model using a 3-D printer. Another company is testing a virtual Hyperloop with sophisticated computer software. In San Francisco, enthusiasts interested in “making Hyperloop a reality” will meet over beers. Meanwhile, Musk himself has put aside the project and returned to his established transportation ventures: luxury electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. and the rocketbuilding company SpaceX. In principle, the Hyperloop is possible. The concept pulls together several proven technologies: Capsules would float on a thin cushion of air and draw on magnetic attraction and solar power to zoom through a nearly air-free tube. Because there would be so little wind resistance, they could top 700 mph (1,125 kph) and make the nearly 400-mile (643-kilometer) trip in about half an hour. Actual construction would hinge
on challenges far more complex than advanced engineering — those involving money and politics. Musk projected a $6 billion cost, but some say that’s too low. Others suggested his timeframe of a decade to completion was naive — that getting political backing and environmental clearances, much less land to build the tubes on, would be hugely time-consuming. Conspicuously absent was a commitment that Musk would sink substantial money into the project anytime soon — if ever. On a call with reporters, Musk suggested he might build a “subscale” test version in a few years if the idea was floundering. One thing Musk was clear about: The public should participate in questioning, modifying and, ultimately, perfecting his proposal. And in that respect, there has been no lack of enthusiasm. NEW YORK — Just in time for the back-to-school season, new laptops with extended battery life are hitting store shelves. What these laptops have in common are microprocessors that belong to a new family of Intel chips called Haswell. The chips consume less power than previous generations and promise a 50 percent boost in battery life for watching video. The improvements extend to word processing, Web surfing and other computing tasks as well. Put another way, you can unplug your laptop in the morning and go a full day without a charge, with some breaks for meals, exercise and errands. The 13-inch (33-centimeter) MacBook Air, for instance, promises up to 12 hours of battery life. Three Windows machines I tried promise seven to nine hours. For students, that’s a full day of cutting classes — and more. For business travelers, that’s a cross-country flight including delays. The catch: Slim, lightweight laptops with Haswell chips cost more than $1,000. Cheaper laptops will be heavier or come with older chips. I reviewed Apple’s MacBook Air and Dell, Sony and Acer computers running Microsoft’s Windows 8. Samsung and other PC makers are just coming out with Haswell laptops, so you should expect even more choices by the holidays. The four I tested use solid-state flash drives, which keep laptops light but don’t have as much capacity as traditional storage. They also lack Ethernet ports for wired Internet connections and slots for DVDs. Expect to use Wi-Fi a lot, though USB ports are available to connect devices. Base models come with 128 gigabytes of storage. You can spend a few hundred dollars more for additional storage and faster processors.

NEW YORK — Amazon’s unit that runs Web servers for other companies had problems Sunday that coincided with outages or slowdowns on several popular websites. AirBnB says its site was one of those affected. Other services that were slow or unavailable included Instagram and Twitter’s Vine video-sharing application. Online home rental service AirBnB tweeted at 4:32 p.m. ET that it was one of several websites and apps that were temporarily down because Amazon server problems. Instagram sent a tweet saying it was aware some users were having trouble loading Instagram and that was working on the problem. Vine later sent a similar tweet. Amazon Web Services provides companies with online storage and computing power. Its website showed several problems resolved on Sunday evening, with minor issues remaining. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At 7 p.m. ET videos posted to Vine appeared to be working. Instagram and AirBnB were functioning but slow.
A lecturer from the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Windia, said that value-added of the agricultural sector was only IDR 2.5 million per month for one hectare of land (10,000 m2). TABANAN - The Miss World beauty contest has added a new task to the ranks of Tabanan Police. Ahead of such a big event, the Tabanan Police and Kediri Police started making security anticipation. One of them was by holding inspection to plot houses or migrant shelters, Saturday night (Aug 24). As a result, dozens of people were found to have not owned a seasonal resident identity card (Kipem). The inspection involved joint personnel of Kediri Police and Tabanan Police. Tabanan Police Chief added the inspection would continue to be held until the Miss World event in Bali was over. According to him, the world beauty pageant was feared to be used by the troublemakers to make unfavorable atmosphere. Due to protesting the asphalt mixing plant (AMP) having caused pollution, a resident of Kesimpar, Besakih, Karangasem, Nengah Dablegan, 35, was even reported to police by the investor. It began where Dablegan took two keys of the heavy equipment like caterpillar and loader as well as a key of generator in the AMP area at 10:00 a.m., Thursday (Aug 22). However, it was only Dablegan getting into the location to take the three keys. Though coming with the three colleagues, the others did not jointly take the key of the heavy equipment. The desperation of the residents to take key of the heavy equipment belonging to the investor was alleged to have been caused by the anger of residents that had frequently protested and complained, but there was no change to save the health of the surrounding residents. Chief of Selat Police, I Gede Wali, confirmed the case. When summoned by police to testify at Selat Police headquarters, the residents of Kesimpar rollicked around 10:00 a.m., Friday (Aug 23). Dozens of Kesimpar customary villagers, Besakih village, Karangasem, flocked to Selat Police headquarters on Friday. Dablegan had been examined by the investigators, while a number of the other colleagues were examined as witness. In front of reporters, the residents expected the government could come down to the field and listen to the complaints of residents that did not know about the laws. They also expected the government to foster, crack or close the investor harming the community, if they did not care about the public complaints. They expected the investor also pay attention to the difficulty of residents. To reporters, the residents complained about the asphalt mixing plant (AMP) located in the area of quarry C had caused thick dust pollution. Among dozens of residents there was the Dalem Kesimpar temple priest, Jro Mangku Ketut Pasti. Similarly, the crowds also included the residents whose homes located near the AMP such as Nengah Sama, 35, Wayan Suarsana, 36, Putu Astawa whose house only located 150 meters away, while Wayan Suta, 37, his house was located 100 meters from the factory amidst the Lebih River, between Lebih village, Kesimpar village and temple of Selat subdistrict.
Residents said the AMP factory had been operating since four years ago. Formerly, the plant used diesel fuel. However, since the price of diesel fuel increased, the investor switched to the use of coal. Since the use of the coal, pollution appeared. Thick smokes and smell attacked the Kesimpar community, especially when the plant was operating and the east wind was blowing. According to residents, the plant’s chimney was only about 15 meters high. Once the smokes and dust came out of the factory’s chimney, the directly attacked the residents. “When it rains, the smokes and dust go down,” said one of the residents, Nengah Sama. Other than thick dust and smoke pollution, the factory also sounded too noisy. Residents near the plant exposed that pollution were sickly and children were coughing. Aside from having a negative impact on public health due to the pollution, farmers around the plant also suffered great losses. Allegedly, the dust pollution had caused their chili and vegetables damaged. Their marigold flower previously becoming the leading horticultural product for long time had been damaged and fell off due to pollution. Residents said they had protested the AMP investor for several times. Even, a dialogue had been made with the investor and it promised not to work overtime. Besides, the investor once gave compensation for the impact on the village or community. Unluckily, it was only undertaken temporarily and did not continue. Later, the promise of working without overtime was broken by the plant, and it operated for 12 hours or took overtime until 7:00 p.m. Jro Mangku Ketut Pasti said the Kesimpar residents definitely affected by the factory approximately amounted to 35 families of the total of 150 families (700 people). They admitted there was a compensation for the impact caused by the investor. However, the amount was nothing compared to the impact on the people’s health and agricultural losses. Earlier, the investor reported the act of a number of residents to Selat Police headquarters. Such a report was triggered by the act of residents taking the working tools existing in the plant such as the key of generator set and two keys of caterpillar and loader by force. It was known by residents around 06:00 in the morning. Fortunately, the road condition was deserted at the time of incident. Meanwhile, the family shrine owner also went to the garden. Somehow, the road cliff along nearly 10 meters suddenly collapsed and dragged down. Due to its strength, the avalanche materials buried the shrine buildings. As a result, the permanent shrine was totally destroyed. The material losses were estimated to reach about IDR 60 million. Allegedly, the avalanche was
triggered by the condition of collapsed cliff after flushed by rain. Understandably, the Baturiti area had been flushed by heavy rain within the past few days. The avalanched part looked pretty steep. Some of the materials came apart and dragged the shrine. “The land condition is unstable, it possibly happened due to the rain,” said the resident. When the avalanche occurred, residents scrambled to have a closer look. When checked, the whole shrine buildings had collapsed. Even, some other shrines
were buried by the avalanche. According to residents, the shrine condition was just below the collapsed cliff and its position was indeed steep. Therefore, when it collapsed, the cliff materials grabbed the shrine buildings tightly. As a result, the buildings were flattened to ground. Until Saturday, the collapsed shrines were still left at location. Since it was on the edge of highway, the incident drew the attention of the passing road users. To avoid fatalities, local resident installed a precaution sign near the collapsed cliff. It was feared to be followed by subsequent avalanche because the rain still flushed around the site. The hours-long riot in Htan Gone village, located 16 kilometers (10 miles) south of the town of Kantbalu in the region of Sagaing, began late Saturday after a crowd surrounded a police station, demanding that the suspect in the attempted assault be handed over, a police officer told The Associated Press. The officer requested anonymity because he did not have the authority to speak to reporters. State television reported that about 42 houses and 15 shops were burned and destroyed — most belonging to Muslims. The predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million has been grappling with sectarian violence since the country’s military rulers handed over power to a nominally civilian government in 2011. The unrest — which has killed more than 250 people and left 140,000 others displaced — began last year in the western state of
Rakhine, where nationalist Buddhists accuse the Rohingya Muslim community of illegally entering the country and encroaching on their land. The violence, on a smaller scale but still deadly, spread earlier this year to other parts of the country, fueling deep-seeded prejudices against the Islamic minority and threatening Myanmar’s fragile transition to democracy. Almost all of the victims have been Muslims, often attacked as security forces stood by. The Information Ministry said the latest round of violence was triggered by a report that a Muslim man attempted to sexually assault a Buddhist woman on her way home from work. ISTANBUL - Turkey would join any international coalition against Syria even if a wider consensus on action cannot be reached at the U.N. Security Council, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted as saying on Monday. “We always prioritize acting together with the international community, with United Nations decisions. If such a decision doesn’t emerge from the U.N. Security Council, other alternatives ... would come onto the agenda,” Davutoglu told the Milliyet daily. “Currently 36-37 countries are discussing these alternatives. If a coalition is formed against Syria in this process, Turkey would take its place in this coalition.” Turkey has emerged as one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s most vocal critics during the twoand-a-half year conflict, sheltering half a million refugees and allowing the opposition to organize on its soil. The NATO member has criticized world powers for failing to take a decisive stance. The U.N. Security Council has been hamstrung by the opposition of veto-wielding members, Russia and China, to any firm action. “From the outset, Turkey has argued that the international community must not stand by in the face of the Assad regime’s massacres,” Davutoglu said. “Leaving unpunished leaders and regimes which resort to such practices undermines the deterrence of the international community. BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned a Greek debt writedown could spark a “domino effect of uncertainty” and scare off investors in the eurozone, in an interview released Sunday. Merkel’s comments to Focus news weekly come a month before elections in Europe’s biggest economy and days after the woes of debt-mired Greece lurched onto the campaign trail. “I am expressly warning against a haircut,” she said, according to a prereleased copy of the interview. “It could trigger a domino effect of uncertainty with the result that the readiness of private investors to invest in the eurozone again fall to nothing,” she said. The term haircut means a reduction in the value of debt bonds owed, with the effect that investors who have loaned money lose part of the eventual repayment of the amount owed. Merkel said Greece’s debt and structural reforms would again be studied in 2014, as planned. “Until then the country still has much to do and must continue consistently to implement its reforms,” she added. She pointed to a second-quarter return to growth in the eurozone and said there were also “positive developments” in Greece. Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble made waves last week, saying at a campaign event that Athens would need another rescue after 2014, seen as marking a shift in Germany’s position. Schaeuble insisted however that creditors would not be forced to take more losses on their Greek holdings. Merkel faces elections for a third term on September 22 and the issue of Greece could prove contentious as German taxpayers feel they have already stumped up the lion’s share of European bailouts. The chancellor already sought to defuse the issue, saying a day after Schaeuble’s comments that any decision on a new aid package for debtmired Greece would not come before next year. Heavily indebted Greece has received two international bailouts in exchange for reforms including major public sector cuts in jobs, pay and pensions.

next stage would be the stacking of boulders as a connector to the bridge structure. After the piling could be accomplished, it meant the project completion had reached 70 percent. So, it just remained to resume with the installation of concrete having been pre-cast at Kelan. It was ready to be transported and installed. could be completed on time. He even mentioned, if the project could be completed before the target, his party planned to install paving block in the courtyard currently utilized as the location of night market. TUOLUMNE CITY, Calif. — Hundreds of firefighters were digging trenches, clearing brush and starting back blazes to keep a wildfire raging north of Yosemite National Park out of several mountain hamlets. MOSCOW - Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden got stuck in the transit zone of a Moscow airport because Havana said it would not let him fly from Russia to Cuba, a Russian newspaper reported on Monday. Snowden, who is wanted in the United States for leaking details of U.S. government surveillance programs, had planned to fly to Havana from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport a day after arriving from Hong Kong on June 23. But Snowden, who eventually accepted a year’s asylum in Russia after spending nearly six weeks at Sheremetyevo, did not show up for the flight although he had been allocated a seat. Citing several sources, including one close to the U.S. State Department, Kommersant newspaper said the reason was that at the last minute Cuba told officials to stop Snowden from boarding the Aeroflot flight. It said Cuba had changed its mind after pressure by the United States, which wants to try Snowden on espionage charges. Kommersant also said Snowden had spent a couple of days in the Russian consulate in Hong Kong to declare his intention of flying to Latin America via Moscow. “His choice of route and his plea to help were a complete surprise to us. We did not invite him,” Kommersant quoted a Russian state source as saying. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Allowing Snowden to land would have put Cuba’s relations with the United States at risk. Ties between the United States and Russia were strained when Moscow granted Snowden asylum. Following the disagreement over Snowden, U.S. President Barack Obama postponed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin planned for next month.

STUTTGART, Germany — Stuttgart has fired coach Bruno Labbadia after four straight losses to start the Bundesliga season. The club did not immediately name a successor Monday. Passengers and crew had alerted the pilots that a boy was seen running to the plane as it was taxiing to take off Saturday from southern Benin City, Arik Airline spokesman Ola Adebanji said. The pilots alerted the country’s aviation agency, he said. The incident highlighted the growing concerns about airport security in Nigeria, which is fighting an Islamic uprising mainly contained in the northeast of the country, where there is a state of emergency. “We are worried by the incessant security lapses at our airports,” Arik Airline managing director Chris Ndulue said. The West African country also has a history of major aviation disasters and security challenges. Despite the possible presence of the boy, the pilots opted to continue with their takeoff, Federal Aviation Agency of Nigeria spokesman Yakubu Dati said. “Immediately upon the departure of the aircraft, FAAN’s security did another sweep of the area and found nothing unusual,” Dati said.

TUOLUMNE CITY, Calif. — Hundreds of firefighters were digging trenches, clearing brush and starting back blazes to keep a wildfire raging north of Yosemite National Park out of several mountain hamlets. Inaccessible terrain, strong winds and bone-dry conditions have hampered their efforts to contain the Rim Fire, which began Aug. 17 and has grown to become one of the biggest in California history. Firefighters were hoping to advance on the flames Monday but strong winds were threatening push the blaze closer to Tuolumne City and nearby communities. “This fire has continued to pose every challenge that there can be on a fire...,” said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “It’s a very difficult firefight.” The fire has consumed nearly 225 square miles of picturesque forests. Officials estimate containment at just 7 percent. MOSCOW - Former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden got stuck in the transit zone of a Moscow airport because Havana said it would not let him fly from Russia to Cuba, a Russian newspaper reported on Monday. Snowden, who is wanted in the United States for leaking details of U.S. government surveillance programs, had planned to fly to Havana from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport a day after arriving from Hong Kong on June 23. But Snowden, who eventually accepted a year’s asylum in Russia after spending nearly six weeks at Sheremetyevo, did not show up for the flight although he had been allocated a seat. Citing several sources, including one close to the U.S. State Department, Kommersant newspaper said the reason was that at the last minute Cuba told officials to stop Snowden from boarding the Aeroflot flight. It said Cuba had changed its mind after pressure by the United States, which wants to try Snowden on espionage charges. Kommersant also said Snowden had spent a couple of days in the Russian consulate in Hong Kong to declare his intention of flying to Latin America via Moscow. “His choice of route and his plea to help were a complete surprise to us. We did not invite him,” Kommersant quoted a Russian state source as saying. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Allowing Snowden to land would have put Cuba’s relations with the United States at risk. Ties between the United States and Russia were strained when Moscow granted Snowden asylum. Following the disagreement over Snowden, U.S. President Barack Obama postponed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin planned for next month.

Hakuho looked to be on impressive form as he made it through successive rounds, in one bout guiding 206-kilogrammes (454pounds) Gagamaru of Georgia out of the ring in seconds. But he met his match in the semifinals against Kisenosato, who also went on to win Saturday’s final against Harumafuji. Kisenosato will now take part in the final of the two-day tournament on Sunday. JAKARTA - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel held talks in Indonesia on Monday as part of a tour to bolster US ties with Southeast Asia but a confrontation with Syria threatened to overshadow the trip. BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned a Greek debt writedown could spark a “domino effect of uncertainty” and scare off investors in the eurozone, in an interview released Sunday. Merkel’s comments to Focus news weekly come a month before elections in Europe’s biggest economy and days after the woes of debt-mired Greece lurched onto the campaign trail. “I am expressly warning against a haircut,” she said, according to a prereleased copy of the interview. “It could trigger a domino effect of uncertainty with the result that the readiness of private investors to invest in the eurozone again fall to nothing,” she said. The term haircut means a reduction in the value of debt bonds owed, with the effect that investors who have loaned money lose part of the eventual repayment of the amount owed. Merkel said Greece’s debt and structural reforms would again be studied in 2014, as planned. “Until then the country still has much to do and must continue consistently to implement its reforms,” she added. She pointed to a second-quarter return to growth in the eurozone and said there were also “positive developments” in Greece. Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble made waves last week, saying at a campaign event that Athens would need another rescue after 2014, seen as marking a shift in Germany’s position. Schaeuble insisted however that creditors would not be forced to take more losses on their Greek holdings. Merkel faces elections for a third term on September 22 and the issue of Greece could prove contentious as German taxpayers feel they have already stumped up the lion’s share of European bailouts. The chancellor already sought to defuse the issue, saying a day after Schaeuble’s comments that any decision on a new aid package for debtmired Greece would not come before next year. Heavily indebted Greece has received two international bailouts in exchange for reforms including major public sector cuts in jobs, pay and pensions.

Due to protesting the asphalt mixing plant (AMP) having caused pollution, a resident of Kesimpar, Besakih, Karangasem, Nengah Dablegan, 35, was even reported to police by the investor. It began where Dablegan took two keys of the heavy equipment like caterpillar and loader as well as a key of generator in the AMP area at 10:00 a.m., Thursday (Aug 22). However, it was only Dablegan getting into the location to take the three keys. Though coming with the three colleagues, the others did not jointly take the key of the heavy equipment. The desperation of the residents to take key of the heavy equipment belonging to the investor was alleged to have been caused by the anger of residents that had frequently protested and complained, but there was no change to save the health of the surrounding residents. Chief of Selat Police, I Gede Wali, confirmed the case. When summoned by police to testify at Selat Police headquarters, the residents of Kesimpar rollicked around 10:00 a.m., Friday (Aug 23). Dozens of Kesimpar customary villagers, Besakih village, Karangasem, flocked to Selat Police headquarters on Friday. Dablegan had been examined by the investigators, while a number of the other colleagues were examined as witness. In front of reporters, the residents expected the government could come down to the field and listen to the complaints of residents that did not know about the laws. They also expected the government to foster, crack or close the investor harming the community, if they did not care about the public complaints. They expected the investor also pay attention to the difficulty of residents. To reporters, the residents complained about the asphalt mixing plant (AMP) located in the area of quarry C had caused thick dust pollution. Among dozens of residents there was the Dalem Kesimpar temple priest, Jro Mangku Ketut Pasti. Similarly, the crowds also included the residents whose homes located near the AMP such as Nengah Sama, 35, Wayan Suarsana, 36, Putu Astawa whose house only located 150 meters away, while Wayan Suta, 37, his house was located 100 meters from the factory amidst the Lebih River, between Lebih village, Kesimpar village and temple of Selat subdistrict.
Residents said the AMP factory had been operating since four years ago. Formerly, the plant used diesel fuel. However, since the price of diesel fuel increased, the investor switched to the use of coal. Since the use of the coal, pollution appeared. Thick smokes and smell attacked the Kesimpar community, especially when the plant was operating and the east wind was blowing. According to residents, the plant’s chimney was only about 15 meters high. Once the smokes and dust came out of the factory’s chimney, the directly attacked the residents. “When it rains, the smokes and dust go down,” said one of the residents, Nengah Sama. Other than thick dust and smoke pollution, the factory also sounded too noisy. Residents near the plant exposed that pollution were sickly and children were coughing. Aside from having a negative impact on public health due to the pollution, farmers around the plant also suffered great losses. Allegedly, the dust pollution had caused their chili and vegetables damaged. Their marigold flower previously becoming the leading horticultural product for long time had been damaged and fell off due to pollution. Residents said they had protested the AMP investor for several times. Even, a dialogue had been made with the investor and it promised not to work overtime. Besides, the investor once gave compensation for the impact on the village or community. Unluckily, it was only undertaken temporarily and did not continue. Later, the promise of working without overtime was broken by the plant, and it operated for 12 hours or took overtime until 7:00 p.m. Jro Mangku Ketut Pasti said the Kesimpar residents definitely affected by the factory approximately amounted to 35 families of the total of 150 families (700 people). They admitted there was a compensation for the impact caused by the investor. However, the amount was nothing compared to the impact on the people’s health and agricultural losses. Earlier, the investor reported the act of a number of residents to Selat Police headquarters. Such a report was triggered by the act of residents taking the working tools existing in the plant such as the key of generator set and two keys of caterpillar and loader by force. triggered by the condition of collapsed cliff after flushed by rain. Understandably, the Baturiti area had been flushed by heavy rain within the past few days. The avalanched part looked pretty steep. Some of the materials came apart and dragged the shrine. “The land condition is unstable, it possibly happened due to the rain,” said the resident. When the avalanche occurred, residents scrambled to have a closer look. When checked, the whole shrine buildings had collapsed. Even, some other shrines
were buried by the avalanche. According to residents, the shrine condition was just below the collapsed cliff and its position was indeed steep. Therefore, when it collapsed, the cliff materials grabbed the shrine buildings tightly. As a result, the buildings were flattened to ground. Until Saturday, the collapsed shrines were still left at location. Since it was on the edge of highway, the incident drew the attention of the passing road users. To avoid fatalities, local resident installed a precaution sign near the collapsed cliff. It was feared to be followed by subsequent avalanche because the rain still flushed around the site. The predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million has been grappling with sectarian violence since the country’s military rulers handed over power to a nominally civilian government in 2011. The unrest — which has killed more than 250 people and left 140,000 others displaced — began last year in the western state of
Rakhine, where nationalist Buddhists accuse the Rohingya Muslim community of illegally entering the country and encroaching on their land. The violence, on a smaller scale but still deadly, spread earlier this year to other parts of the country, fueling deep-seeded prejudices against the Islamic minority and threatening Myanmar’s fragile transition to democracy. ISTANBUL - Turkey would join any international coalition against Syria even if a wider consensus on action cannot be reached at the U.N. Security Council, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted as saying on Monday. “We always prioritize acting together with the international community, with United Nations decisions. If such a decision doesn’t emerge from the U.N. Security Council, other alternatives ... would come onto the agenda,” Davutoglu told the Milliyet daily. “Currently 36-37 countries are discussing these alternatives. If a coalition is formed against Syria in this process, Turkey would take its place in this coalition.” Turkey has emerged as one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s most vocal critics during the twoand-a-half year conflict, sheltering half a million refugees and allowing the opposition to organize on its soil. NEW YORK — Amazon’s unit that runs Web servers for other companies had problems Sunday that coincided with outages or slowdowns on several popular websites. AirBnB says its site was one of those affected. Other services that were slow or unavailable included Instagram and Twitter’s Vine video-sharing application. Online home rental service AirBnB tweeted at 4:32 p.m. ET that it was one of several websites and apps that were temporarily down because Amazon server problems. Instagram sent a tweet saying it was aware some users were having trouble loading Instagram and that was working on the problem. Vine later sent a similar tweet. Amazon Web Services provides companies with online storage and computing power. Its website showed several problems resolved on Sunday evening, with minor issues remaining. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At 7 p.m. ET videos posted to Vine appeared to be working. Instagram and AirBnB were functioning but slow.

TABANAN - The Miss World beauty contest has added a new task to the ranks of Tabanan Police. Ahead of such a big event, the Tabanan Police and Kediri Police started making security anticipation. One of them was by holding inspection to plot houses or migrant shelters, Saturday night (Aug 24). As a result, dozens of people were found to have not owned a seasonal resident identity card (Kipem). The inspection involved joint personnel of Kediri Police and Tabanan Police. The whole team was divided into two groups. A team rummaged through the mi-
grant area around the cattle market at Banjaranyar village, Kediri, while the remaining explored the boarding houses around the SMAN Kediri high school. As punishment, the officers confiscated their identity cards and then asked them to submit their administrative requirement to headman office nearby. “We make this inspection ahead of the Miss World implementation. Our targets are migrant’s identity, including the possibility of ter-
rorist,” said the Tabanan Police Chief, Dekananto Eko Purnomo, accompanied by Chief of Kediri Police, Erwin Pratomo, after the inspection. Tabanan Police Chief added the inspection would continue to be held until the Miss World event in Bali was over. According to him, the world beauty pageant was feared to be used by the troublemakers to make unfavorable atmosphere. Terror act occurred at Sukawati Art Market on Sunday (Aug 25). An unclaimed suitcase alleged to contain bomb made local traders at the Sukawati Art Market and Sukawati Public Market restless. The orange suitcase had been inspected by metal detector by the Bomb Squad of Bali Police Mobile Brigade. As a result, in the bag was just found a Nokia cellular phone with SIM card along with some phone numbers. Suspicion against the suitcase measuring approximately 80 x 40 cm occurred around 10:00 a.m. Initially, one of the traders of the Sukawati Art Market, I Made Budiarta, 40, from Gelumpang hamlet, Sukawati, accidentally saw a suitcase when going to put the offerings in the Padmasana shrine of the local market. After seeing a suitcase upright put neatly, Budiarta then told the staff of the Sukawati Art Market, namely Made Mudita and Wayan Eka Selamet. Both staff then checked the suitcase. According to the testimony of Mudita, the suitcase was placed in front of the market, in the north of a dust bin, adjacent to the Jalan Raya Sukawati. When wishing to have a closer look at the suitcase, his friend
Selamet was not allowed. For safety, the suitcase finding was then reported to the Traffic Police Post in the Sukawati Art Market and subsequently was reported to Sukawati Police. Similarly, police officers did not dare not to open the suitcase haphazardly. Police officers then installed police line to keep people away from the location. All the traders in the market were suggested to stay away from the location to avoid any undesirable things. Another tense ambience occurred again, when the Bomb Squad of the Bali Police Mobile Brigade came down to location and conducted an examination against the suitcase and the contents. the help of IT device, the suitcase was then secured and taken to Police Headquarters for further inspection. At the end, only a cellular phone was found in the suitcase. Meanwhile, Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of the Gianyar Police, Nengah Sadiarta, accompanied by Criminal Detective Unit of Sukawati Police, Gde Sudyatmaja, stated to have checked the cellular phone found in the mysterious suitcase. The utility excavation project in Southern Badung reaped criticism. Aside from causing the area chaotic and damage to roads, the alternate projects are considered as evidence of less coordination among the agencies. Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta, said on Sunday (Aug 25) that his party actually did not question about the existence of the excavation project as it was related to the service to community. However, he even wondered why an accomplished project at one point was even dismantled again for the benefit of the other projects. He gave an example the project on Jalan Raya Kedonganan. Within a month, there had been two excavation projects performed alternately. The smooth road having been paved after the cable installation project was even re-excavated for pipe installation. “Before a month of completing the road pavement for cable installation, it’s now resumed with another excavation,” he said. He said the overlapping excavation projects in Southern Badung had repeatedly reaped the public criticism. Moreover, the projects led to traffic congestion and were accused of wasting budget, primarily for the road maintenance. In the future, said Sumerta, the government should have a clear masterplan on cable and pipeline utility. Moreover, the Badung government had a discourse on the establishment of a special channel for cable and pipeline installation. Relevant agencies were also expected to coordinate one another so that the excavation project would no longer result in the same problems as today. Meanwhile, the authority of the Badung Municipal Waterworks or PDAM Tirta Mangutama as the owner of the excavation project at Kedonganan apologized to the people that had been disturbed during the construction project at the local area. Director of the PDAM Tirta Mangutama, IB Wardana, said his party had made coordination with relevant agencies before the construction. One of the local farmers, Ketut Redana, said the price increase of Kintamani orange amidst the rising prices of basic needs could make the farmers slightly smile. Such price increase was admitted to have begun before the Eid holidays. “The increase has been taking place from a few days before the Eid,” he said. He said at the farmer level, the price of Kintamani orange could reach IDR 7,000 per kilogram. He had confidence the price of Kintamani orange outside Bali could exceed that price. All this time, the Kintamani orange as the crop of farmers had been marketed in Bali and outside Bali including the areas such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang and other cities. A total of 193 mangrove seeds were planted by a team of 20 people at Suwung Kauh area in Denpasar, Bali. The Mangrove Reforestation Project is supported by Bali Regional Mangrove Management Centre Region 1 and in line with Ministry of Forestry program. The role of mangroves is to provide coastal protection against the actions of waves, wind and water. As widely reported, extensive areas of mangroves can help reduce the loss of life and damage caused by tsunamis by taking the first brunt of the impact and by dissipating the energy of the wave as it passes through the mangrove area. “Suwung is the perfect location for our program as it is located only ± 8 kilometers from EDEN Hotel Kuta Bali. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

New biography claims more Salinger books due out Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — The authors of a new J.D. Salinger biography are claiming they have cracked one of publishing’s greatest mysteries: What “The Catcher in the Rye” novelist was working on during the last half century of his life. Starting between 2015 and 2020, a series of posthumous Salinger releases are planned, according to “Salinger,” co-written by David Shields and Shane Salerno and scheduled to be published Sept. 3. The Associated Press obtained an early copy. Salerno’s documentary on the author opens Sept. 6. In January, it will air on PBS as an installment of “American Masters.” Providing by far the most detailed report of previously unreleased material, the book’s authors cite “two independent and separate sources” who they
say have “documented and verified” the information. One of the Salinger books would center on “Catcher” protagonist Holden Caulfield and his family, including a revised version of an early, unpublished story “The Last and Best of the Peter Pans.” Other volumes would draw on Salinger’s World War II years and his immersion in Eastern religion. A publication called “The Family Glass” would feature additional stories about the Glass family of “Franny and Zooey” and other Salinger works. “Salinger” does not identify a prospective publisher. Spokesman Terry Adams of Little, Brown and Company, which released “Catcher” and Salinger’s three other books, declined to comment Sunday. Salinger’s son, Matt Salinger, who helps run the author’s literary estate, was not immediately available for comment.

NEW YORK CITY - Justin Timberlake stole the show late Sunday at the MTV video Music Awards ceremony, singing several of his top hits and surprising fans with reunion of his old band N Sync. Timberlake, wildly cheered and applauded by the crowd packed into the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, received the night’s most important prize -- the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award for career achievements. He also won the Video of the Year award for the song “Mirrors.” Timberlake wowed his fans by singing a medley of his best-known tunes, including “SexyBack,” “Cry me a River,” “Senorita,” “Suit and Tie,” and “Rock your Body” -- then
the four members of his former group joined him to perform two of N Sync’s best-known hits, “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye.” The 1990s hit boy band broke up on 2002. The packed arena was thrilled, and stars like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez stood and danced at their seats. “I don’t deserve this award but I’m not going to give it back,” Timberlake said as he accepted the prize.
Late night TV comedian Jimmy Fallon, who hosted the ceremony, described Timberlake as a “legend” and dubbed him the “President of Pop.” Singer Bruno Mars won an award for Best Male Video for his hit “Locked Out of Heaven,” while country/pop diva Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video award for her song “I Knew You Were Trouble.” “I want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I’ve got one of these,” she said as she accepted the award. The TV cameras then focused on Swift’s ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, a member of the British hit boy band One Direction.
The award for Best Pop Video went to Swift’s gal pal Selena Gomez -- delivered to her by the five One Direction boys -- for the visuals to her song “Come & Get It.” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took home an award for Best Video with a Social Message -- “Same love” -- about legalizing same-sex marriage. “ Stars that performed at the event included Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga. Katy Perry sang from a mock boxing ring set up under the Brooklyn bridge. Former “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus, clearly aiming to show that she was beyond the days of the Disney TV show, sang her summer hit “We Can’t Stop”
in a tight leotard, thrusting out her tongue and waving her microphone near her crotch. She then stripped down to what appeared to be her underwear and remained on the stage, gyrating her hips and using a large foam hand as a sex prop, for a raunchy performance of “Blurred Lines” along with singer Robin Thicke. Lady Gaga opened the show with her new single “Applause,” and changed into outlandish costumes before ending in a bikini of giant seashells which she wore for the rest of the night. The first MTV awards were handed out in 1984. Winners receive a statuette of an astronaut on the moon, known as a “Moonman” award.
