“Pakistan has delivered a message early July that they will send Umar Patek to Indonesia,” National Anti-Terror Agency (BNPT) deputy chief Tito Karnavian told reporters. Jakarta’s foreign and justice ministries are now working to process Patek’s deportation, he said. Indonesian counter-terrorism police have been tracking Patek for years. A project on the side of Yeh Dati River, Banjar Samsam I, Samsam Village, Kerambitan started to be revealed. The building that took over the demarcation line of the river is about to be made as plastic factory using up 2700 meters squares of land. Even just had principal permit, it’s trying to build it fast and according to Head of Tabanan Government Public Relation Section, Wayan Sarba, the project does not have a building permit yet and other permits as stated last Monday (25/7). As Bali Post observed on Monday, the project seemed to be rushed by the workers. The project was once concerned by Tabanan House of Representatives for being in a dangerous area. It is placed on a
sharp turn and besides a bridge. Other project being talked about was the land nearby Adipura statue, Pesiapan Village, which have taken down trees. It is said that this one will be an alcohol drink factory yet

Hundreds of Illegal Banners Taken Down Singaraja (Bali Post) –
Buleleng Police Civil Service lately has disciplined illegal banners such as seen on Monday (25/ 7). Besides being illegal, some were stuck on greenery trees using strong nails which damage the trees. Head of Buleleng Police Civil Service, Putu Sukayadnya, accompanied by a member Putu Widiada stated they took down those at Ngurah Rai Street, Ahmad Yani Street,
Soedirman Street, Pahlawan Street and Mayor Metra Street. From the checking most of them were small sized and didn’t have the permit from Services Office (KPT), Singaraja. Some has its permit expired and the owner of the banners didn’t take it down. “Before we took it down forcedly we cross check wit KPT on which are illegal,” he explained. According to Sukayadnya some banners were nailed to greenery
trees with strong nails which totally damages the tree and also giving unwanted scenery. “We take down all those violating Regional Law No. 51 Year 2007 including connecting to one of the election candidate promotion banners,” he explained. Now the hundred banners are still confiscated by the Police Civil Service until each companies come to get it themselves. If they don’t care, then it will be destroyed by burning it. (kmb)
THE economic growth of Bali supported by consumer sector, both household consumption and government consumption, leads to high rates of unemployment and poverty. High unemployment reaching 65,604 people is also triggered by the quality of education that does not correspond to the market demand. This matter was revealed by Chairman of the association of Bali’s economic scholars, Prof. Dr. Ketut Rahyuda. Other than generating no significant multiplier effects for the life of community, the growth of Bali’s economy was unable to trigger maximum new job opportunities. It was caused by the economic growth achieved was more supported by consumption sector, not investment. As consequence, it could only create somewhat restricted new job opportunities. “Government should boost t h e r e a l s e c t o r, i n c l u d i n g backing up the agricultural sector. By doing so, the high unemployment rate can be resolved,” said Prof. Rahyuda in Denpasar on Monday (Jul 25). According to Prof. Rahyuda, apart from intensifying the real sector, Bali relying on the service sector required human resources with high competency and willingness to work hard. Those having only common competence would be excluded in the search for job opportunities. “Competencies of our human resources in all sectors are very low so they are unable to compete against those coming from outside. On that account, the large amount of taxes levied by government should appropriately be used to enhance the competitiveness of our human resources,” he said. High unemployment rate was feared to result in disastrous social impacts such as the rampant robbery, theft as
well as fraud that could harm the image of Bali as a tourist destination that had been known to be safe and comfortable. In the meantime, Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded the growth of gross domestic product (GDP) or the Indonesia’s economic growth reaching 6.1 percent during 2010 or IDR 6,422.9 billion. Most GDP of Indonesia was used for household consumption, namely as much as IDR 3,642 trillion. Other components included the use of government consumption expenditure amounting to IDR 518, 9 billion, capital formation remaining gross or physical investment reaching the amount of IDR 2,065.2 trillion. Meanwhile, a community leader of Badung, I Nyoman R u t h a A d y, o b s e r v e d t h a t negative impact of the presence of regional migrants had restricted the existing job opportunities. However, their presence should not be considered as a competitor but as motivator for local communities. “Due to established social status, many local communities look for jobs very selectively. They tend to stay away from menial jobs and look for more beneficial jobs such as working in five star hotels,” he said. Rutha Ady stated the presence of regional immigrants in Kuta almost controlled the informal sector such as traders of basic needs like food. This could be seen in the emptiness of traditional markets in Kuta ahead of religious celebrations such as Eid and Christmas. “Conversely, on the celebrations such as Galungan festivity the market activities are very crowded. This indicates that local residents begin to leave the profession, while regional migrants are willing to work on anything provided that it is profitable,” he said. (par)

Crashed by waves
A boat from Java keels over in waters of Yehembang Negara (Bali Post)—
A fishing boat from East Java carrying four fishermen keeled over in the waters of Yehembang Beach, Mendoyo on Monday morning (Jul 25). Luckily, there were no casualties in the incident because most fishermen from Banyuwangi could reach the shore by holding a floating fish box. According to a number of witnesses on Yehembang Beach, the incident of overturned boat occurred at around 06:00 a.m. Local Time. The boat ridden by Ismail, 35, Sugianto, 29, from Muncar, Banyuwangi and Subakri, 24, and Rofi’i, 24, from Probolinggo departed from Muncar on Sunday (Jul 24). Meanwhile, I Wayan Wijana, 46, a local resident who saw the incident said that position of the boat was about 150 meters from the beach. According to him, the boat was too close to the beach so it was crashed by the waves as high as five meters. “The waves here are very erratic, sometimes they are huge and can reach five meters as this morning,” he explained. When seeing the boat keeling over, his party attempted to help those fishermen who had sunk to the edge. At that time, they were found clinging to a cork fish box. As a matter of fact, the fishermen were about to pull fishing line that had been installed, but suddenly the five-meter waves crashed their boat. As a result, all goods aboard including the one-quintal catch fish vanished. Similarly, mobile phones of the two fishermen lost at sea. In the meantime, the boat could be taken ashore and losses were estimated to reach around IDR 5 million. No damage or leakage occurred to body of the boat but diesel engine powering the boat was ascertained to be out of order due to intrusion of sea water. “Fortunately, there were no victims because these waters are very ferocious. That’s why no fishermen dare to harbor their boat here,” said the local resident. (kmb26)
50 percent of dog population given rabies vaccination Denpasar (Bali Post)— Mass rabies vaccination program of the second phase has been successful to vaccinate 125,015 dogs scattered throughout 2,655 hamlets in Bali. Such number has just reached 50 percent of dog population targeted for rabies vaccination reaching 245,000. Head of Bali Livestock Agency, Putu Sumantra, revealed this matter on Monday (Jul 25). According to Sumantra, the achievement of 50 percent of vaccinated dogs was inseparable from the great support of all societal components in Bali. They were getting more conscious to vaccinate their pet dogs to ward off the more widespread outbreaks of rabies in the region. In addition, the field officers making collaboration with vaccinator team, survey team after the vaccination and the rapid response team were also very eager to perform their duties in the field and could coordinate well one other. “Technical skills of the officers also increased due to their rich field experience and the support of FAO in providing training and additional dog catcher,” he said. His party targeted that 245,000 dogs existing in Bali could be reached by rabies vaccination in the second phase at the end of September 2011. It was affirmed that his party consistently targeted the vaccination to cover 100 percent of dogs in Bali. According to international regulations, he said, the vaccination should cover at least 70 percent of the existing dog population. “We are optimistic the target to vaccinate 245,000 dogs would be achieved by the end of September. Even, the number of vaccinated dogs can reach more than 300,000 because we will also continue to cover the newly born dog population,” he said. Furthermore, Sumantra invited all components of Balinese people to persistently support the endeavor of rabies control in Bali by tying or impounding their dog to facilitate the implementation of vaccination. Such breeding patterns were also very effective to reduce the number of dog bite cases to other animals or to humans. “I also remind the dog owners to keep their dogs responsibly, care of them properly and vaccinate them regularly. The best way to control rabies in Bali is by undertaking vaccination to rabies carrier animals, primarily dogs,” he said. (kmb13)

Traditional games can strengthen the identity and build character,” said the Head of Historical and Preservation of Traditional Values Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, I Made Purna, Monday (Jul 25) in connection with the Traditional Children’s Games Festival held by Directorate of Tradition, Directorate General of Cultural, Art and Film Values in Denpasar recently. Purna said there were at least two important elements in traditional
games. Firstly, it concerned with the element of togetherness, honesty, sportsmanship and consistency to uphold the existing rules. Secondly, it related to the ability to adapt to environment. It was discernible in the utilization of materials provided by nature used as the gaming tools. Such values were not encountered in many modern games highlighting the individuality and tending to make a child apart from their social and natural environment. The Traditional Children’s Games Festival aimed at preserving and developing traditional children’s games as one of the nation’s cultural heritage. Additionally, it was also intended to increase the appreciation of children to various traditional
games owned by tribes in Indonesia. The activity also posed a strategic social means to implant cultural values existing in the traditional games, such as the value of togetherness, honesty, sportsmanship and compliance with the existing rules and others. These activities included the parade or exhibition of respective regency/city. Besides, the event was also graced with competition and demonstration of children’s traditional games such as deduplak relay (using coconut shell as sandal), top spinning and so forth as well as workshop on children’s traditional games. The participants consisted of students of primary and secondary schools across Bali.
Rare Stock, LPG Gas Price Up Tabanan (Bali Post) –
The past three days Tabanan has been hit by a severe shortage on LPG Gas as many sellers don’t have stock both on 3 kg and 12 kg tubes. For that, at least IDR 1,000 increase on its prices has been added as stated by one seller Men Santi (40) last Monday (25/7). The shortage has caused difficulties for sellers as many customers demanded it. Usually sellers would get 10-15 gas tubes to sell, since Saturday (23/7) somehow it’s vanishing. Finding its alternative is also not easy, kerosene has gone rare and its price of a littler is almost the same as a 3kg LPG gas tube.
The signs of the rarity also can be seen in the LPG Gas Refill Station (SPBBE) at Pandak Gede Village, Kediri, Tabanan where since the morning carriers of empty tubes waits for its turn to refill with the queue until outside the parking areal. “There were even those who waited two days to refill,” Wayan Sunarya, one of the carriers, stated. Meanwhile, one SPBBE staff, Made Sugianyar, declined of the rarity. He explained the stock in Pertamina Dipo is still normal where its capacity 8,000-9,500 litre and distributed normally to all dealers. It was explained there are 10 dealers who the
SPBBE give service to and there is a delivery order claimed already. Connected to the queue, there is a limited system to each dealer where only two trucks per day are allowed and so those who came late will have to wait. This is to give fairness to all dealer, if not then they might just want to do whatever they want and not letting others have it. The trucks capacity range form 350-560 3kg gas tubes and 110-156 12kg gas tubes. Each dealer has to show their delivery order. “About sellers’ shortage on gas tubes to sell, we don’t know. MANILA - Ten people died and five fishermen were missing in the central Philippines as storm Nock-Ten battered the main island of Luzon, suspending schools and grounding domestic flights and ferries, local officials said on Tuesday. The weather bureau raised storm alert levels in nearly 30 provinces in northern Philippines as Nock-Ten gained strength and speed, bringing heavy rains, and was spotted about 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Daet, Camarines Norte on Luzon. Many areas in the coconutgrowing Albay and Camarines Sur provinces in the central Bicol region were inundated, with some areas submerged in chestdeep flood waters, said Joey Salceda, governor of Albay province in the central Philippines. No damage to rice fields has been reported but the storm is ex-
pected to pass through a major rice production province on Wednesday. Packing center winds of 75 kph (47 mph) and gustiness of up to 90 kph, Nock-Ten is moving westnorthwest at 15 kph and is expected to make landfall early on Wednesday, said Graciano Yumul of the weather bureau, warning of floods and landslides. Three people were buried in landslides as the volume of rainfall the local weather bureau had collected in the last 24 hours became more than the total amount of rain for the month of July, Salceda added. Benito Ramos, executive director of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said five fishermen were reported missing and they were still assessing damages on crop and public infrastructure. “We need rain to fill up our dams and irrigate our farms, but too much rainfall could damage our ricelands in northern Luzon,” he added.

But the rains stopped two years ago, and food supplies stored in a cellar lasted the family a year. Then the animals began to die, forcing him to pack up. When asked how much money he had, Bulle pulls out a thick wad of Somali shillings — bills that add up to the equivalent of only 80 cents. His only sign of wealth is a wristwatch. His whole family survived the journey with no one getting hurt, killed or left behind. U.N. worker Abdi Nur said that although Bulle was “clever” to pack just enough food to make it, he pointed to the farmer’s young children gathered under the acacia tree. “The kids are getting thinner. have an open and critical approach...but there is a time for everything,” Knut Storberget said after talks with Oslo’s police chief, referring to questions, mostly in the media, about the police response time. An armed SWAT team took more than an hour to reach Utoeya island, where Breivik was coolly shooting terrified youngsters at a ruling Labour Party youth camp. He killed 68 there and eight in an earlier bombing of Oslo’s government district. Police are likely to release
the names of the victims on Tuesday, a day after they revised the death toll down to 76 from 93, the NTB news agency said. Storberget also denied police had ignored threats posed by right-wing zealots in Norway. “I reject suggestions that we have not had the farright under the microscope,” he said. Ayana becomes 1st hotel in Bali Tsunami ready certified IBP
JIMBARAN – AYANA Resort and Spa has become the first hotel in Bali to be certified as Tsunami Ready, following a comprehensive audit and training program. Although AYANA’s cliff-top location 35 meters above the ocean puts it and its guests at low-risk in case of a tsunami, the hotel wanted to be prepared to take care of guests in case of any emergency. “We may be considered low-risk because of our cliff-top location, but that is no reason to be complacent,” said AYANA’s General Manager Charles de Foucault. “This certification will enable us to safeguard our guests and also assist with people from outside the hotel who may come to AYANA to seek refuge on higher ground, in case of a tsunami.” AYANA’s 78 private villas and 290-room hotel are located on towering cliffs above Jimbaran Bay, on Bali’s south-western peninsula. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

THE HAGUE - Serbia’s last major war crimes suspect refused to enter a plea on charges over the 1991-1995 Croatian war when he made a brief first appearance at the U.N.’s Yugoslavia tribunal on Monday. The arrest of Goran Hadzic, 52, and his transfer to The Hague last week were a symbolic moment for both Serbia and the Balkans region, ending an 18-year manhunt to detain all 161 suspects indicted by the Yugoslavia war crimes court. The European Union has insisted that Serbia arrests all wanted war criminals before it grants candidate status for membership. It is due to issue a progress report in October. “Mr Hadzic is not going to enter a plea today. He is going to avail himself of the rights granted to him,” Hadzic’s duty counsel Vladimir Petrovic told the court. Speaking outside the court, Petrovic said Hadzic wanted to appoint his defense team first and to study the indictment before entering a plea. “It is practically a new indictment, so Mr Hadzic didn’t have more than 48 hours to go through it,” Petrovic said, adding that Hadzic wants to have prominent
Serbian lawyer Toma Fila, who has past experience at the tribunal, to be his permanent attorney. Hadzic is charged with 14 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. These include the extermination, torture, murder and willful killing of hundreds of Croat and other non-Serb civilians — in particular, 264 hospital patients who were killed in Vukovar in 1991. In the hearing that lasted just under 15 minutes, Judge O-Gon Kwon said that a second arraignment hearing would be scheduled within 30 days as Hadzic had not entered a plea. Suspects at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia have the right to delay entering a plea for up
to 30 days. But if they then still refuse to enter one, the court may enter a plea of not guilty on their behalf. Flanked by four guards, Hadzic looked tired when he appeared in court, shorn of the long black beard that he sported during the Balkan wars but with a grey mustache. Hadzic was on the run for seven years, outlasting the better known indicted war criminal from the 1990s breakup of Yugoslavia, Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic. At least 130,000 people were killed as the Yugoslav federation was torn apart in various wars between Serbs, Croats, Muslims and Albanians during the 1990s.

cial MAP news agency said. MAP did not say how many passenger were on board the C-130 Hercules aircraft but said the accident took place in Guelmim, just north of
the disputed Western Sahara territory. Citing unnamed sources, independent news portal Lakome.com said at least 20 of the 70 passengers aboard the plane had died.
Meanwhile, police revealed they had dramatically overcounted the number of people slain in the shooting spree on Utoya island, lowering the death toll there from 86 to 68. Police spokesman Oystein Maeland said police and rescuers were focused on helping survivors and securing the area, and may have counted some bodies twice, though he did not immediately explain how the errors occurred. Police also raised the toll from a bombing outside the government’s headquarters in Oslo from seven to eight. The sharp reduction in the death toll adds to a list of police missteps: They took 90 minutes to arrive at the island retreat after the first shot and survivors who called emergency services reported being told to stay off the lines unless they were calling about the Oslo bombings. On Monday, the force revealed its entire Oslo helicopter crew had been sent on vacation and thus couldn’t be mobilized to the scene. By contrast, Breivik, who donned a police uniform as part of a ruse to draw campers to him, appeared in total control during the island rampage, police official Odd Reidar Humlegaard said. “He’s been merciless,” Humlegaard said. Authorities say Breivik used two weapons during the island attack — both bought legally, according to his manifesto. A doctor treating victims told The Associated Press the gunman used illegal “dum-dum”-style bullets designed to disintegrate inside the body and cause maximum internal damage. Breivik faces 21 years in prison for the terrorism charges, but he has told authorities he never expects to be released. While 21 years is the stiffest sentence a Norwegian judge can hand down, a special sentence can be given to prisoners deemed a danger to society who are locked up for 20-year sentences that can be renewed indefinitely. Oslo began to get back to normal Monday, with shops opening and the tram running. The entire country paused for a minute of silence in honor of the victims, then later in the day, 150,000 people filled the city’s streets to mourn the dead with a rose vigil that ended in the heart of the city. Afterward, entire streets were awash in flowers; roses also decorated the fences that blocked off Friday’s bomb site. Crown Prince Haakon spoke “of a street being filled with love,” bringing his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, to tears. “We have the power to meet hate with togetherness. We have chosen what we stand for,” he said. Breivik has pilloried Norway’s openness and embrace of immigrants, saying his attacks were intended to start a revolution to inspire Norwegians to retake their country from Muslims. He blames liberals for championing multiculturalism over Norway’s “indigenous” culture. “The operation was not to kill as many people as possible but to give a strong signal that could not be misunderstood that as long as the Labor Party keeps driving its ideological lie and keeps deconstructing Norwegian culture and mass importing Muslims, then they must assume responsibility for this treason,” according to the English translation of Judge Heger’s ruling. Breivik has claimed the killings were meant to wake people up to these problems and to serve as “marketing” for his manifesto. Heger, however, denied Breivik the public stage he wanted to air his extremist views by closing Monday’s court hearing and ordering him cut off from the world for eight weeks, without access to visitors, mail or media. For four of those, he will be in complete isolation. Typically, the accused is brought to court every four weeks while prosecutors prepare their case, so a judge can approve his continued detention. Longer periods are not unusual in serious cases. In the court appearance, Breivik alluded to two other “cells” of his network — which he refers to in his manifesto as a new “Knights Templar,” the medieval cabal of crusaders who protected Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. In the treatise, he describes being invited to join the group, which he says is dedicated to “anti-jihad,” and claims members held meetings in London and the Baltics. Afterward, he says, they vowed not to contact one another and to instead plan their “resistance” on their own. But they were also to space out their attacks, he wrote. “We should avoid any immediate follow-up attacks as it would negate the shock effect of the subsequent attacks. A large successful attack every 5-12 years was optimal,” he wrote. At one point, his manifesto briefly referred to an intention to contact two other cells, but no details were given. European security officials said they were aware of increased Internet chatter from individuals claiming they belonged to the Knights Templar and were investigating claims that Breivik, and other far-right individuals, attended a London meeting of the group in 2002. In his manifesto, Breivik describes how he bought armor, guns, tons of fertilizer and other bomb components, stashed caches of weapons and wiped clean his computer hard drive — all while evading police suspicion.

Fourteen provinces identified as terrorism propagation pockets Antara
JAKARTA - The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) said 14 of Indonesia‘s provinces have been identified as pockets of terrorist ideology propagation. “The identifications were made based upon monitoring conducted over he past few years,” BNPT chief Ansyaad Mbai said here on Monday. He said the areas were vulnerable to terrorist ideology propagation. He said the centers of terrorist ideology propagation activities were to be found in a number of towns in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Nusa Tenggara.
In Sumatra, the regions that are vulnerable to terrorist ideology propagation are Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, South Sumatra and Lampung. “In Java the activities are centered in Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java and Yogyakarta. Other regions include Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Kalimantan,” Ansyaad said. He said he could not tell about
the size of the terrorist groups in the regions nor their potential threats on national security situation. “None could tell about their strength. They are moving underground. Their potential threats are relative, depending upon the situation,” he said. Until now, he said, efforts had been made to arrest more than 700 terrorist suspects but some of them had been released for lack of evidence. “Apart from them there are terrorism convicts that have been released and conducted actions again. Just in the Aceh cell there are around 22 people,” he said.

Daniel Bobis, a math teacher and coach at Long Beach High School in New York, apparently tangled boards with another surfer Sunday morning in waters off Sumatra island. His wife, Rachel, said his board washed to shore soon after. She initially thought he would pop up on a stretch of beach down the coast and make his way back to their holiday bungalow. But by Monday afternoon, she’d
all but given up hope of finding him alive. “Everyone is telling me a lot of people go missing here ... that within 48 hours his body will float up and wash in,” said the 29-yearold. “That’s the only thing we can be hopeful of.” On Monday, a helicopter joined a fleet of fishing boats and a local search-and-rescue team scouring waters and the coast, said Andri, a rescuer on the scene. Dozens of surfers, divers and snorkelers also have joined in. Bobis’ father and stepmother were on their way to Indonesia and friends in Long Beach held a candlelight vigil Sunday evening in the beachside community where he grew up. “Surfing was like his religion,”
said Maurice Mitchell, who played in the same band as Bobis and was best man at his 2008 wedding. “He said it was one of the most addictive experiences in life and if anybody tried to surf they’d be as hooked as he was.” When Bobis decided to become a teacher in his early 20s, Mitchell knew he’d stand out in the classroom - he was into metal and hiphop and could match his students in slang and knowledge of youth culture. He really came into his own in the classroom, Mitchell said, mentoring and tutoring kids and keeping an eye out for bullies. Bobis also started a competitive surf team at Long Beach High School, where he served as head coach.

JAKARTA - Hollywood blockbusters will soon return to Indonesian screens, with the final “Harry Potter” film leading the way to end a five-month drought caused by a standoff over the country’s tax on imported movies, an official said Monday. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2” is being imported by a newly established local company and will be released before Ramadan, the Islamic fasting month that begins Aug. 1, said Djonny Sjafruddin, head of the Indonesian Cinema Companies Union. He declined to give an exact release date. “All things such as censorship and subtitles have already been finished,” Sjafruddin said. “We need some 90 copies and they are now under process.” He added that “Transformers 3” and “Kung Fu Panda 2” would also be released during the next several weeks. The announcment signals relief for moviegoers forced for months to make do with local productions and second-tier foreign releases because of the protracted dispute between studios, film importers and the government. In February, six major Hollywood studios withdrew films from Indonesia, a Muslim-majority nation of 237 million people, in opposition to a new levy on imported
movies that was meant to protect local filmmakers. Last month the government announced a revised tax it said would bring back Hollywood movies, but their return had been blocked by another dispute. Indonesia’s largest film distributors remain banned from bringing in new films, pending their payment of more than $30 million in unpaid taxes and related penalties. The film importers are challenging that in court. The debut of “Harry Potter” and the other movies is made possible by the recent establishment of a new film importer, PT Omega Film, Sjarifuddin said. The new company has no tax problems and so can distribute the newest Hollywood movies, Many Indonesian film lovers turned to the black market for the latest movies during the five-month blackout. Pirated DVD vendors reported a 50 percent increase in sales, according to local media. Others flew to Singapore to see the latest Hollywood hits. Studios participating in the boycott include Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Walt Disney Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Warner Bros. Pictures and Universal Pictures, leaving Indonesian movie fans gasping. Normally, they spend an estimated $6.2 million a month, but local media report boxoffice takings have been down 60 to 70 percent since February.

Bali Today Successful move to preserve the highly endangered Bali starling IBP
DENPASAR - Landed today at the Ngurah Rai International airport of Bali, three Bali Starlings, famous as the mascot of Bali province, return ‘home’ from Jurong Bird Park, in a programme assisted by Wildlife Reserves in Singapore. Born and bred in Singapore, the Bali Starlings arrival from Singapore is facilitated by Begawan Foundation, with the aim to increase the genetic diversity in their breeding stock. These new arrivals will be settled at the foundation’s breeding centre at Sibang, near Ubud after their quarantine period at Bali Bird Park. Begawan Foundation, established by Bradley and Debbie Gardner in 1999, focuses its attention on the conservation of the highly endangered Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi), also known as Rothschild’s Mynah or Bali Mynah, on its island habitat. This project began with two pairs of Bali Starling, imported from the UK in 1999, and by 2005 the foundation had bred a total of 97 birds, which were then taken to Nusa Penida. A total of 65 birds were released over the next two years to ensure the start of a sustainable wild flock. In 2010 the remaining breeding birds were returned to the mainland to a new site set up in Sibang at Green School, where the foundation is erecting new enclosures to accomodate the increasing number of birds.
The Bali Starling was registered as an endangered bird species by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) in 1970. Several organizations have tried to help it survive since then, but the wild population has still not increased to a sustainable level. Besides the destruction of its habitat, the major problem facing the bird’s repopulation in the past has been bird poacher. The Bali Starling is a beautiful friendly bird. Preening its head feathers to attract its lifelong mate, and finding its food in the dry grassland forests, it breeds in hollow trees or holes eaten in coconuts. With its white body, brilliant blue-framed eyes, and a touch of black at its wingtips and tail feathers, its beauty has turned out to be a cause of its potential demise. Begawan Foundation continues to monitor and observe the birds in the wild, tracking where the birds nest and breed. This important role ensures that any future releases will be made with planned knowledge of how the bird survives in the wild, what food is required, and how it breeds.

From One Green to Some other Greens Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farmers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one had, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality. Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an efficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers. Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green prov-
ince and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri). Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic. One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Socialization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertil-
izers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality. As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter. However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new
method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers. Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of ketupat sidayu together with oblation and side dish of yellow dragonfly. Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have developed the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow
plants. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to oppose God and will result in bad impact to human. Cow dung and urine as well as compost are three beneficial ingredients being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming. To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and eco-friendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to reorientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Balinese Culture Holy Water at Beji Langon Temple Beji Langon Temple is situated at Kapal Village, Mengwi Subdistrict, Badung Regency. As a matter of fact, there are many Beji (springs) temples in Bali. Beji is identical to bathing place but not for general public. It is consecrated or made sacred by Hindu community because the natural water existing in the Beji area is taken advantage for the benefit of religious and traditional ceremonies. Adjacent to the Beji Langon Temple can be found a number of showers taking out water (as seen on photo) used for bathing place by the surrounding community. Its crystal clear water can be directly drunk without the necessity to boil. Alleg-
edly, the Beji Langon was established in the eleventh century. The Beji situated about 10 km north of Denpasar is a tourist object at Kapal Village. Not long ago, Badung Government indeed had established several tourism villages such as the village of Kapal, Baha, Mengwi, Bongkasa and some others. These villages keep a unique and attractive potential that are worth visiting by tourists. The Beji Langon itself stretches in a cool environment with the backdrop of verdant trees remaining eternal within the vicinity of Penet River that is suitable for rafting. Its springs come from a natural cave
beneath a rock cliff. Then, on the rock cliffs visitors can observe some reliefs and deity statues, while the greatest is the elephant statue (as seen on photo). Those sculptures and relief remind us of the artistic reliefs found in Goa Gajah and Gunung Kawi tourist object. Beji Langon Temple located approximately 300 meters south of the Sada Kapal Temple is frequently visited by European tourists. Beji Langon is also interesting enough, so it will be advisable for you to visit the object while taking a natural bath. Dozens of restaurants do not pass certification Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Rapid tourism development in Bali, especially in Denpasar, carries numerous impacts, without exception for the rampant construction of restaurant. Unfortunately, dozens of restaurants existing in Denpasar have not complied with the standards Head of Denpasar Government Tourism Office, I Putu Budiasa, accompanied by the Head of Tourism Facilities, Ketut Arya, after the handover of security and restaurant certificate on Monday (Jul 25) stated that restaurant certification activities had been carried out for two times. Such certification was very important for restaurant because it was one of the factors providing security and convenience to visi-
tors. “Restaurants that have acquired the certification will be announced on the official tourism website of Denpasar City,” said Budiasa. Currently, the registered restaurants in Denpasar Government Tourism Office amounted to 370 units. This certification process was carried out in stages where the second stage was undertaken in 2011 for 60 restaurants, while certification in 2010 was also provided for the same amount of restaurants. Among the 60 restaurants certified, there were 13 restaurants that had not complied with the standards of certification. “After implementing the certification, it is declared that the 13 restaurants have not complied with the stan-
dards of safety and comfort. Most of those restaurants have not had security officers,” said Budiasa. From the certification, 5 restaurants were stated to achieve the first category (gold grade), second category or silver grade (16) and third category or bronze grade (26). Meanwhile, Chief of Denpasar Metro Police, Pol. Gr. Com. Suryanbodo Asmoro, stated in his written speech read by Chief Unit of Vital Object Security, Pol. Com. Adj. Fahmi, that certification was undertaken as an effort to ensure the visitor safety. The standardization included the assessment to some aspects such as security, infrastructure and services. (kmb12)

(Pork Cooked in Soya Sauce) Though Indonesia is an Islamic country, there is some pork available. It is hard to find and most restaurants don’t serve it because any restaurant that cooks pork would have to have completely separate facilities and equipment to prepare it or the restaurant would not be considered halal (clean). Yield: 4 servings
Ingredients o 1/2 kg (1 1/4 lb) fillet of pork -or leg of pork o 1 tb Clear soya sauce o 2 tb Plain flour o 1/2 ts Powdered ginger o 20 g (4 oz) button mushrooms o 4 Cloves garlic o 1 sl of root ginger, about 2 cm -(1") across and 1/ 2 cm -(1/4") thick o 3 tb Dark soya sauce o Pepper or a pinch of chilli -powder o 2 tb water o 2 tb Medium dry sherry or rice -wine (optional) o 2 ts Lemon juice o 6 tb Oil or pork fat Directions This, as its name suggests, is pork cooked in soya sauce. It is a particular favourite with my own husband and children, who always know when it is about to appear on the table because the ginger and garlic frying in the sauce smell so deliciously savoury. Cut the pork into small cubes. Put the flour into a bowl and add the clear soya sauce and ginger powder, mixing them well together. Coat the pork with the mixture and then let it stand for at least 30 minutes. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Peel the garlic and ginger and slice them very thin; you can use these thin slices as they are, or cut them again into very tiny sticks. Heat the oil or fat in a wok or thick frying pan and fry the meat, half of it at a time, turning it from time to time, for 5 minutes. Repeat the process for the remaining half of the meat. The flour that coated the meat will tend to stay in the pan or stick to the bottom of it, but leave it thereit will thicken the sauce later. Now take most of the oil out of the pan, leaving only about two tablespoons which you then heat again. In this, fry the tiny slices of garlic and ginger and the mushrooms, stirring continuously, for i minute. Add the soya sauce, the water and the meat. mix well, season with pepper or chilli powder, and stir continuously for 1 or 2 minutes. just before serving, add the sherry or rice wine and the lemon juice. Serve hot. This dish keeps extremely well in the freezer, and it is worth making a large quantity from, say, half a legof pork, which is much cheaper than buying pork fillet. If you are going to freeze your Babi Kecap, however, do not add the sherry or lemon juice at the time of cooking. To serve from the freezer, thaw the meat out completely and heat quickly on a high flame for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring or shaking the pan well all the time. Gitgit Waterfall is a beautiful tourist destination in north part of Bali. Gitgit waterfall is located in the plateau area with the height about 35 meters and it is surrounded by tropical tree and emits the constantly natural water debit during the year. BUSINESS Lawmakers deadlocked over debt deal as default looms Reuters
WASHINGTON - The United States edged closer on Tuesday to a devastating default as Republicans and Democrats deadlocked over competing plans to raise the debt ceiling, one week before a deadline to act. President Barack Obama, in a televised address aimed at rallying public support for a package proposed by Democrats, warned that failure to increase the U.S. borrowing limit would severely hurt the nation. “For the first time in history, our country’s triple-A credit rating would be downgraded, leaving investors around the world to wonder whether the United States is still a good bet,” he said in remarks in the East Room on Monday night. Republican and Democratic lawmakers, despite weeks of intense talks, have been unable to agree on how to lift the $14.3 trillion debt limit by an August 2 deadline, when the country runs out of cash to pays its bills. Markets have been rattled by the descent of negotiations into an acrimonious stalemate, with both sides offering competing plans that are unlikely to win bipartisan support. Gold has been pushed to an all-time high and the dollar has softened as investors weigh the harm a default could do to U.S. and world growth if it pushed up borrowing costs as expected. “Every day that goes by without a deal will see investors become a bit more defensive,” said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington. Obama warned a default would inflict a tax hike on all Americans by pushing up borrowing costs on things like credit card loans and mortgages, but sought to assure markets a deal could still be reached. “I have told leaders of both parties that they must come up with a fair compromise in the next few days that can pass both houses of Congress - a compromise I can sign. And I am confident we can reach this compromise,” he said. Rating agency S&P warns it could downgrade the United States unless lawmakers agree on steps to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years. A credit rating cut would be felt around the world. Investors will likely demand a higher return for holding U.S. government debt, a benchmark for almost all other financial markets, forcing up interest rates and sapping
asset prices. Republicans and Democrats both insist they will not allow the United States to default. This commitment has not yielded a plan to lift the debt ceiling, which Republicans say must be accompanied by even larger reductions in spending. Democrats want to shield Medicare and Medicaid and say any cuts in these cherished healthcare programs for older or poor Americans must be balanced by changes in the U.S. tax code that generate more revenue in the future. But Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives are adamant they will not vote for a deal that includes tax increases, reflecting the determination of Tea Party conservatives elected last year to shrink government. They control the House while Democrats hold sway in the Senate. House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, must placate these demands and on Monday advanced a two-stage deficit reduction plan that would start with an initial $1.2 trillion in savings over 10 years. It is sure to be rejected by Obama because it would raise the debt limit for only a few months, meaning the issue would have to be revisited in early 2012, making the politics even harder for lawmakers with an eye on the November election. “A six-month extension of the debt ceiling might not be enough to avoid a credit downgrade,” he warned. Democrats formally presented their competing plan for $2.7 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade with a debt limit increase to carry through the November 2012 election, when Obama and many lawmakers are up for re-election. Boehner dismissed the Democratic plan as “full of gimmicks.” Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid insisted “extremists” within the Republican Party must not be allowed to dictate the outcome of the debt debate. The Obama administration has not ruled out invoking the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to sell debt, even if Congress fails to raise the borrowing ceiling.

NEW DELHI - India’s central bank raised its key interest rate by half a percentage point Tuesday, the 11th hike in less than a year and a half, as it warned that inflation remains the country’s main economic concern. The bank raised its shortterm lending rate - or repo rate - from 7.5 percent to 8 percent, a higher increase than expected after inflation rose to 9.4 percent in June from 9.1 percent in May. “Inflation continues to be the dominant macroeconomic concern,” said Reserve Bank of India Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said in announcing the new rates. “Going forward, the monetary policy stance will depend on the evolving inflation trajectory.” Annual inflation could hit 7 percent this year, the bank said, raising its earlier projection of

High oil prices, loose fiscal policy and supply constraints have muted the impact of the RBI’s long fight against inflation. The bank on Tuesday appeared to chastise the government for fueling inflation, saying in its quarterly review of monetary policy that “the economy’s ability to grow rapidly for any length of time without provoking inflation is dependent on implementing policies, with corresponding resource allocations, which will allow the supply of various products and services to keep pace with demand.” With the short-term borrowing rate fixed at 1 percentage point below the repo rate, it was raised to 7 percent in line with the bank’s latest decision. The rate hikes dismayed business groups and investors. The benchmark Sensex stock index was down 1.4 percent at 18,603.33 by midday.

SINGAPORE — Oil prices rose to near $100 a barrel Tuesday in Asia, boosted by a weaker dollar as talks among U.S. leaders made little progress ahead of next week’s deadline to raise the government debt limit. Benchmark oil for September delivery was up 42 cents to $99.62 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude lost 67 cents to settle at $99.20 on Monday. In London, Brent crude gained 14 cents to $118.08 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange. Republican and Democratic leaders rejected each others’ government spending and debt proposals Monday as an Aug. 2 deadline looms for
Congress to raise the government’s $14.3 trillion debt limit. Without action by that date, the Treasury will be unable to pay all its bills, which could lead to a debt default and undermine the global economy. “It’s going to be tough over these next few days as the government plays the default card,” Blue Ocean Brokerage said in a report. “One simple announcement that things are resolved will snap the markets back.” Investor concern has grown this week about the potential economic damage that could be caused by not raising the debt limit. However, traders are still factoring in expectations that an agreement will be reached before the deadline passes. “The continued lack of progress in negotiations has been absorbed surprisingly well by the equities and
oil markets,” Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. “We still feel that a breakout of the recent trading range will eventually develop to the upside, but such a development will likely demand some form of agreement regarding the debt ceiling.” A weaker U.S. dollar made commodities cheaper for investors with other currencies and helped boost crude. The euro rose to $1.4516 on Tuesday from $1.4378 late Monday. Investors will also be closely watching the latest U.S. consumer confidence data scheduled to be released later Tuesday. In other Nymex trading in September contracts, heating oil gained 1.2 cents to $3.13 a gallon while gasoline rose 1.5 cents at $3.10 a gallon. Natural gas futures for August delivery dropped 3.0 cents at $4.36 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Microsoft apologizes for Winehouse tweet MICROSOFT on Monday apologized for a “tweet” that has been blasted for seeming like a blatant effort to cash in on the death of 27-year-old British singer Amy Winehouse. “Apologies to everyone if our earlier Amy Winehouse ‘download’ tweet seemed purely commercially motivated,” Microsoft UK PR said at a ‘tweetbox360’ account at microblogging service Twitter. “Far from the case, we assure you,” the message continued. Microsoft became a target of online ire over the weekend after the same Twitter account posted an update inviting people to remember Winehouse by buying digital versions of her “Back to Black” album at social.zune.net. The Zune website is Microsoft’s shop on the Internet for downloading music, films and other entertainment content to computers, smartphones, and Xbox 360 videogame consoles. Replies on Twitter criticized the Microsoft message as “crass” and “vile.”
Winehouse’s latest album topped the sales chart at Apple’s online iTunes music store on Monday while her defiant “Rehab” song was the tenth best selling single track download. Winehouse’s parents on Monday visited the growing shrine of tributes left outside her London home as a post-mortem on her body failed to establish a formal cause of death. Winehouse was found dead at her house on Saturday and the police are not treating it as suspicious. The cause of death remains unknown. With her sultry vocals and trademark beehive hairstyle, Winehouse was considered one of the finest British female singers in years, but she had struggled with drink and drug addictions. “With Amy W’s passing, the world has lost a huge talent,” Microsoft UK PR said in its most recent tweeted message. “Our thoughts are with Amy’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

The 33 miners have sold the rights to their story to producer Mike Medavoy, the producer and the miners’ representatives announced Monday. The planned film will recount the remarkable plight of the miners who were trapped for 69 days after the San Jose mine they were working in collapsed near Copiapo, Chile. The veteran producer Medavoy has produced films including “Shutter Island” and “Black Swan.” ‘’Motorcycle Diaries” screenwriter Jose Rivera is set to write the script. “We’ll dig deep into their stories,” Medavoy said in an interview. “We’re not just going to tell a story about 33 miners in a hole.” Miner Juan Andrew Illanes called the project “the only official
and authorized film about what we lived in the San Jose mine.” The miners are collectively represented by William Morris Endeavor Entertainment. In an interview, Miner Omar Reygadas, 56, said he hopes the film will preserve the hopeful message of the miners’ experience. “We want the film to get into people’s spirits,” Reygadas said. “I want it to emphasize the spiritual aspects, to show respect between people, teamwork and, more than anything, faith. I think that what happened in this mine was a miracle of life, and that’s what I want it to show.” The film will face obvious dramatic hurdles in that its conclusion — that all the miners were safely rescued — is already widely known.
That much of their trial was in utter darkness, too, wouldn’t seem to easily lend itself to a cinematic rendering. Medavoy, who established Phoenix Pictures after years as a top executive at TriStar Pictures, Orion Pictures and elsewhere, acknowledged that he was initially apprehensive about taking on the film because of the well-known ending. But he said the miners’ story reminded him of John Ford’s “How Green Was My Valley,” the 1941 film about life in a Welsh mining town. “I think of it as all of our lives, just coincidence and chance,” Medavoy said. “There’s so much drama, and when the drama kicks in, it’s really fascinating. And all the drama that plays out above ground can be interspersed.” It’s also a personal journey for Medavoy, who lived in Chile for ten years as a child. He calls the film a chance to “explore from whence I came.”

Tribute Concert” at a Beverly Hills hotel, brothers Jermaine Jackson and Randy Jackson released a statement that said they opposed the show because it will be held during the trial of a doctor charged in their brother’s death. “While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael’s death,” the brothers wrote in a statement posted on each of their Twitter accounts. Jury selection in the involuntary
manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray is scheduled to begin on Sept. 8, with opening statements later in the month. More wildfires will transform US national park: study Climate change is likely to cause more frequent wildfires and may transform the forests and ecosystem of the iconic Yellowstone national park in the coming decades, a US study said Monday. Dense forests dominated by narrow lodgepole pines trees are currently a dominant feature of the picturesque tourist destination which straddles Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. But more open spaces, grasslands and forests populated by different kinds of fir trees and shrubs could characterize it in the future, said the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Years when no wildfires break out will become rare by 2050, and fires like the historic one in 1988 that ravaged 1,200 square miles (311,000 hectares) will become the norm by 2075. US university researchers made the forecasts by examining climate data from 1972 to 1999 and creating statistical patterns by combining those data with figures on the size and frequency of Rocky Moun-
tain fires in the same period. The study authors then projected how climate change of up to one degree Celsius annually, combined with the snowmelt which is arriving earlier each spring, would affect fires in Yellowstone through 2099. “What surprised us about our results was the speed and scale of the projected changes in fire in Greater Yellowstone,” said professor Anthony Westerling of the University of California, Merced. “We expected fire to increase with increased temperatures, but we did not expect it to increase so much or so quickly. We were also surprised by how consistent the
changes were across different climate projections.” After 2050, the average annual area burned was nearly 400 square miles (100,000 hectares), the study said. The fire pattern became remarkable similar to that currently seen in the US southwest. “Large, severe fires are normal for this ecosystem. It has burned this way about every 100 to 300 years, for thousands of years,” said co-author Monica Turner of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. “But if the current relationship between climate and large fires holds true, a warming climate will drive more frequent large fires in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in the future.” That could mean that lodgepole pines will have less time to recover in between blazes, and they may be replaced by faster-growing varieties of shrubs and trees like aspen and Douglas fir. Wildlife will certainly be affected, too.
AN experimental drug designed to fit a DNA patch in a flawed gene has cleared an important hurdle in tests on boys struck by a tragic muscle-wasting disease, a British study on Monday says.The condition, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), occurs among roughly 1 one in 3,500 males. It occurs because of a deletion in a gene that makes a protein called dystrophin, which helps provide a protective membrane around muscle fibres. Without this skin, muscle fibres become damaged and eventually die. By they time they are aged eight to 12, boys with DMD become unable to walk and usually face a shortened life expectancy. In DMD, the problem lies specifically in sections of DNA called exons that, like stepping stones, provide the pathway by which the gene makes dystrophin. The new drug takes the approach of “exon skipping,” or applying a tiny molecular patch over the deletion, so that the gene can produce a shorter but still functional version of the protein. After successful tests on muscle cells cultured in a lab dish and

on mice, the therapy was cautiously tested for safety on 19 ambulatory patients aged five to 15 at hospitals in London and Newcastle. Seven out the 19 showed a “significant” response, with levels of dystrophin rising to as much as 18 percent of normal levels. The volunteers, who were treated over 12 weeks, suffered no side effects. They did not show any major improvement in a standard six-minute walking test, although this was not the goal of the mini-trial. The drug, called AVI-4658, patches exon 51, which is deleted in about 15 percent of patients with DMD. “On the basis of our data and recent pre-clinical data, we expect that extended administration of AVI-4658 at doses of 10 mg/ kilo or higher will result in sufficient dystrophin expression to have a positive effect on the prevention of muscle degeneration,” says the study, which is published online by The Lancet. The next step is to test it for efficacy, say the researchers, led by Francesco Muntoni of the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre at UCL Institute of Child Health, London.

Zynga launching a new version of CityVille in mainland China WITH the incredible success of FarmVille and Mafia Wars on Facebook in North America, Zynga hasn’t been able to capture the mainland Chinese market due to blocked Facebook access. Zynga is redesigning CityVille for the Chinese market and plans to launch the game under the title Zynga City. The game is being retooled by Zynga’s Beijing office which was created in May of last year with the acquisition of XPD Media. Zynga is partnering with Chinese internet provider Tencent and the Pengyou social network which has about 100 million users. It will also be transitioned to another Tencent service called QZone which
happens to have 500 million users as well as Weibo, QQ games and Q+. This partnership allows Zynga to become more diverse and less dependent on the success of Facebook for revenue. Zynga has launched social games in Taiwan and Hong Kong, but this is the first attempt at capturing an audience in mainland China. Similar to CityVille, Zynga City allows the user to build homes and businesses. The design of the structures have been changed to reflect traditional Chinese architecture and general decorations like lucky fish fountains or pop culture related items. Zynga is also adding the ability for players to send street
peddlers to their friend’s cities as well as in-game events that are tied to Chinese holidays. Also similar to the North American counterpart, Zynga City will rely on the sale of virtual goods to help players advance quickly. Zynga has excelled with this strategy in the U.S. and recent company valuations are often in the range of $10 to $20 billion. Much of Zynga’s catalog is tied into exclusivity agreements with Facebook including FarmVille, Live Poker, Mafia Wars and PetVille. CityVille currently has 80 million players worldwide and has been translated into Italian, French, Portuguese and other languages.

Copa campaign costs Batista his Argentina job Associated Press Writer
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Sergio Batista has been dismissed as Argentina coach following a disastrous Copa America in which a team of stars led by Lionel Messi managed only one victory. Batista, who took over a year ago, was Argentina’s fourth coach in five years and had the same problem as his predecessor Diego Maradona: little tactical experience and an inability to get superstars to play as a team rather than as individuals. “Batista has ceased to be the national team coach,” Ernesto Cherquis Bialo, spokesman for the Argentine Football Association, said Monday. Alejandro Sabella, former coach of Argentine club Estudiantes, and Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino — an Argentine — are seen as the favorites to replace him. Also being mentioned as a successor is former Boca Juniors and Atletico de Madrid coach Carlos Bianchi. Cherquis Bialo said a new coach would be named in a week. Argentina’s prestige has plunged with the constant coaching turnover, leaving them without a major title in 18 years. It has been 25 years since Argentina won the last of its two World Cup titles. The Copa America, which ended Sunday, was seen a perfect chance to break through with Argentina host-
ing the tournament. The switch is being made before Argentina begins play later this year in South American qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Argentina may have a tough time qualifying for Brazil 2014 with Copa America winner Uruguay and others such as Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela all having played well in the Copa America. AFA President Julio Grondona hired Batista and Maradona and he is certain to be the key person in selecting the next coach. Argentina was knocked out of the Copa America quarterfinals despite fielding a team led by Messi and a cast of some the world’s best players including Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria and Javier Mascherano. Argentina won only one match of four, a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica,
which was fielding its second team as a guest entry in the Copa America. Argentina drew 1-1 with Bolivia, 0-0 with Colombia and was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Uruguay 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time. Batista was Maradona’s teammate and a defensive midfielder on the 1986 team that won the World Cup. A youth coach for the Argentine Football Association, his name began to take on a higher profile after leading Argentina to the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In 17 matches under Batista, Argentina won eight, drew six and lost three. In recent coaching changes, Jose Pekerman stepped down after Argentina was beaten in the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup. He was followed by Alfio Basile, Maradona and Batista.

Chelsea’s misfiring striker Fernando Torres on Tuesday swatted away fears over his form since his £50 million ($82 million) switch from Liverpool, vowing to end his goal drought in the new season. Russell topples Tursunov in Los Angeles tennis American Michael Russell pulled off the first upset of the 2011 Los Angeles ATP tournament, rallying to topple sixth-seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov 6-7 (5/7), 6-0, 6-2. Tursunov, ranked 46th in the world and a title winner already this year at Rosmalen, saved two set points against his serve in the 12th game of the opening set, holding to force the tiebreaker. After eking out the victory in the first set, however, Tursunov went flat and the 110th-ranked Russell went on to triumph in 1hr 52min. Tursunov was the only seeded player in action Monday. Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun emerged victorious from a potentially tricky first-round match, downing American wild card Robby Ginepri 6-4, 7-5. Lu needed little more than an hour and a half to defeat Ginepri, who is coming off a serious elbow injury and playing only his second ATP tournament of the year. But Lu said he knew Ginepri, owner of three career titles, would be a difficult test, even if his injury layoff has seen his ranking plummet to 370th in the world. “He just got back, but everyone

Phelps Loses 200 Free Again Ryan Lochte overtook Michael Phelps on the final turn of the 200meter freestyle to win one of the most highly awaited races of the world championships Tuesday, reminding everyone he is a threat to replace his American teammate as the world’s top swimmer. Lochte touched in 1 minute, 44.44 seconds, with Phelps taking the silver in 1:44.79. Defending champion Paul Biedermann of Germany settled for bronze in 1:44.88. Lochte also beat Phelps in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke at last year’s U.S. championships, then won six golds to Phelps’ five at the Pan Pacific Championships in 2010 — prompting Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman to acknowledge that Lochte was the best swimmer last year. SYDNEY - Australian swimmer Geoff Huegill has warned fellow athletes against injudicious use of social media at next year’s London Olympics, saying it could ruin their careers. The twice Olympic medallist, who is aiming to take part in his third Games in London in almost exactly a year, continued his comeback with a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly at the world championships in Shanghai on Monday. A frequent user of Twitter, the 32-year-old said he was concerned that International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines on the use of social media were unclear. “It’s extremely grey; how on earth can officials and authorities control this monster?,” he wrote in a column in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph on
Tuesday. “Forget drugs in sport, and even match-fixing, social media has the potential to ruin an athlete’s career and tarnish a country’s reputation.” Huegill’s fellow Australian swimmer, Stephanie Rice, apologised last year after losing a sponsor as a result of a tweet that contained a homophobic slur. “We are all aware of the risks that can destroy an athlete’s reputation in the blink of an eye from the moment they press that send button,” Huegill added. “It can start out as simply venting frustration, but all of a sudden can snowball out of control and prompt a media frenzy.” The IOC guidelines encourage athletes to use social media and “post, blog and tweet their experiences” at the London Games.

Dani Pedrosa admits he’s still not fully fit Dani Pedrosa said his lack of fitness as he continues to recover from a recent broken collarbone and subsequent complications was the main reason for him falling away from the United States Grand Prix lead battle. Pedrosa was early leader Jorge Lorenzo’s closest rival at first, before losing touch with the Yamaha and being passed by his Honda team-mate Casey Stoner, who went on to beat Lorezo to victory. But though he had to settle for third, Pedrosa said the result was better than he had expected from Laguna Seca given the track’s challenging nature and his current physical state. “I’m very happy with another podium, the second after my comeback from injury,” he said. “I couldn’t have predicted this result before coming to Laguna because I knew it would be physically very tough for me and it has been great to keep up with the pace of Casey

Martin Whitmarsh says McLaren must stay focused McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh says his outfit must remain focused only on its own performance - rather than what Sebastian Vettel is up to - if it is going to deliver the race wins needed to get itself genuinely back in the world championship fight. Lewis Hamilton’s brilliant victory from Fernando Alonso in the German Grand Prix, with Vettel finishing only fourth after a spin early in the race, has lifted hopes that the second half of the season will not deliver the kind of Red Bull Racing dominance that happened at the start of the year. And although Vettel’s comfortable gap at the head of the points table means he and his team will need to make more mistakes if he is to be beaten, Whitmarsh says there is little point in his outfit thinking about what can go wrong for the German. “We cannot bring about his failure,” explained Whitmarsh. “All we can do is put the pressure on him, and I think Sebastian made a couple of mistakes here. But balance that at the start of the year he was supreme in his confidence, not making any mistakes whatsoever.
“We have to just concentrate on our own act and improve our performance, improve our reliability and improve everything that we do. That is all you can do. If that turns out to be good enough to win races then that will be great.” McLaren is planning to bring further updates to its car for this weekend’s race in Hungary, but Whitmarsh thinks the fact that current form tends to fluctuate between his team, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing means that it is difficult to make any confident claims about potential. “I think giving predictions in this sport is virtually impossible,” he said. “There is a see-saw of form here and I don’t think we can say that this victory shows them we are on a roll. I don’t think we are. “I think we have to say that yes we could win. We can win or it can see-saw and go
the other way, so we will be working very, very hard to make sure that we do the best job possible in the next race.” Whitmarsh also said that he would not use Hamilton’s victory to hit back at critics who suggested his job was on the line recently on the back of a poor run of results. “I think we are a pretty resilient team,” he said. “We have good people and we don’t pay too much attention to outside. “We are tough on ourselves, and we don’t like not winning. I think all that stuff that I enjoyed two weeks ago – remember that at that point we were second in the world championship, more than 50 points ahead of Ferrari, and ahead of some pretty good teams. We lapped some pretty big teams here. “I think we believe in ourselves, and we believe we can be better. But at the same time we also know we are not too bad either. It proves the resilience and the toughness of this team.”
