YouTube’s alliance with two powerhouse names in Hollywood comes as competition intensifies in an online streaming video market with players such as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and Apple. Google-owned YouTube’s subscription service Premium offers ad-free viewing of shared videos along with original content for $12 a month. Original content has become a battlefront in online video, with Netflix and Amazon Prime spending billions of dollars on shows. The YouTube series titled “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” will center on the US cult of unbridled entrepreneurship and a woman’s intense pursuit of the American Dream. The series will be set in the 1990s, and is scheduled for release next year. YouTube Premium, formerly named YouTube Red, had a hit with its first big original series, “Cobra Kai,” inspired by the “Karate Kid” martial arts underdog film from 1984. The first episode of “Cobra Kai” has logged more than 40 million views since it was made available at YouTube on May 2 and a second season has been ordered. Launched in late 2015, YouTube Premium includes an online streaming music service and is seen as part of a broader effort by Google-parent Alphabet to expand how it makes money beyond advertising revenue. HOLLYWOOD - Huge, green and scary stomped on cute, young and funny this weekend as “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” debuted at $148 million to dislodge “Incredibles 2” from the top spot at the North American box office, sales data showed Monday. The dinosaur sequel -- executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, who directed the original two movies -- fell short of the then-record $208 million opening by the last “Jurassic” film in 2015, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. Still, “Fallen Kingdom” has passed the $700 million mark worldwide -- despite tepid reviews like the suggestion by The New York Times that the film is little more than “a way for people with no other plans to grab some air conditioning.” The movie stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as they try to rescue genetically recreated dinosaurs from a volcanothreatened island and move them to -- why not? -- a sprawling California mansion. Sliding to second, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” earned a respectable $80.3 million as North American theaters continued to recover from last summer’s downturn. The film, about a quirky superhero family, raked in $182 million in its debut weekend, a record for an animated feature in the US and Canada, easily surpassing the $135 million debut of 2016’s “Finding Dory.” The film tells the story of the Parr family -- centered this time on matriarch Helen (Holly Hunter) as she battles to help bring the world’s hiding superheroes back into the open. Husband Bob (Craig T. Nelson) is left at home in charge of their frighteningly talented but scarily unpredictable kids, and finds the homemaker’s job more challenging than being a superhero. Domestic visitors begin departing from Bali

DENPASAR - Domestic visitors, who spent the long 2018 Eid al-Fitr, or Lebaran holidays in Bali, have gradually begun departing from the Indonesian island resort. Some of the holidaymakers were seen leaving on Monday evening from the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport for their respective home areas. PT Angkasa Pura-I Public Relations Chief for Ngurah Rai Airport Arie Ahsanurrohim remarked here on Tuesday that the reverse flow of Lebaran holiday travelers from Bali will peak on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ahsanurrohim noted that Wednesday is the last day of the long collective Lebaran holidays this year for holiday travelers to return to work on Thursday. According to Ahsanurrohim, the surge was witnessed in the number of passengers on domestic flights departing from the Ngurah Rai Airport since Monday at the domestic departure terminal of the airport and is forecast to peak on Wednesday. Integrated Command Post of Lebaran Transport Monitoring at the airport recorded that 19,627 domestic passengers had left Bali on Monday. The number is greater than 18,764 domestic passengers, who arrived in Bali via the Ngurah Rai Airport. Airlines had earlier begun operating 724 additional flights to handle the high number of domestic tourists vacationing in Bali. (ant)

Dozens of tourists enjoy free horse-drawn vehicle in Denpasar

DENPASAR - Dozens of domestic tourists were enthusiastic to enjoy a free ride on an ornamental horse-drawn vehicle to explore several attractions in Denpasar City, Bali Province, during the 2018 Lebaran holidays.

“Now, several people throng this city to spend their Lebaran holidays,” Ketut Nedeng, one of the bus drivers, stated here on Saturday. According to Nedeng, free horse cart programs, held every Saturday and Sunday, are more in demand among domestic tourists than those from foreign countries. Every tourist, who will ride the free horse-drawn vehicle, must register and wait for the departure schedule in accordance with the order. Moreover, one is free to choose the

route to take around the city of Denpasar. Visitors can enjoy several historical tours, such as to the Bali Museum, Pasar Badung area, and Catur Muka statue. One of the tourists from Denpasar Gung Tu De expressed happiness on being able to ride the free horse cart along with his family. He said it was unique to ride the free ornamental horsedrawn vehicle to enjoy Denpasar City. Another tourist Luh Winda also echoed the same view when she rode the horse cart for traveling. “It feels different to ride the horse-drawn vehicle rather than use our own vehicle,” she added. Hopefully, the free horse cart program would continue to be enjoyed by tourists, she stated. (ant)

Three traditional boats capsize due to bad weather

NEGARA - Bad weather occurred in the waters of Jembrana on Sunday (Jun. 24) causing three fishing boats to capsize after being hit by strong waves. 50 year old I Wayan Wanda from Mekra Sari , Perancak suffered IDR 500,000 in losses from damage to his fibreglass boat, 58 year old fishermen Negah Narsa from Lemodang, Perancak lost three cedik , fishing gear and his outboard motor for an estimated IDR 10 million in losses while 50 year old Nengah Warsa from Tibu Kleneng Perancak also suffered damage to his boat values at about IDR 500,000. The large waves struck the fishermen as they were returning to the mainland after looking for fish at sea. Strong winds caused their boats to capzied and other fishemrne then at sea contacted local security forces. The quick response team from the Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Jembrana deployed 4 personnel and ambulances to the scene to rescue the victims. The fishermen were successfully evacuated and their were no casualties. Head of the BPBD Jembrana, Ketut Eko Susila Permana, confirmed that there were no casualties and that the fishermen had only suffered material losses. “The weather was bad with very strong winds. We hope fishermen will be careful. Boat captains and harbour officials should also remain vigilant”, he said. Data from the National Weather Service (BMKG) indicated that weather situation was generally cloudy in the north of the Bali Strait and light rain in the southern waters, the average wind blew from the East - Southeast direction with a speed of 2 - 20 knots. High waves in the northern waters ranged from 0.25 to 1.25 meters and in the Southern waters ranged from 0.25 to 3.5 meters. (120)

Fireproof robot can map burning building and predict explosions

IN a development welcomed by firefighters, a group of European researchers has developed a robot that can enter blazing buildings to map the terrain and gauge the risk of explosions.

The “SmokeBot”, still in development, is designed to go where it is unsafe for humans, equipped with gas sensors, radar, a laser scanner and a thermal camera, relaying data in real time back to an operative. “At present, there is no robot with this combination of features,” said computer science professor Achim Lilienthal, of Sweden’s Örebro University, who is leading the project. As well as “seeing” without using the visible light spectrum, the bot can analyse the air around it and give a percentage breakdown of the gases present to assess the risk of explosion. Data collected by the bot are sent to a human operator over an internet connection. Should the robot lose its connection, it will automatically make its way back to the last location at which it could access the internet. Sylvia Pratzler-Wanczura, a fire and rescue researcher with the Dortmund fire department, said the robot offered a “considerable advantage” in situations where it was too risky to send in rescue personnel or when rescuers had to search through large areas, as is the case with forest fires. However, she added that its data processing capacity needed to be increased. “At this time, it takes about 15-30 minutes for the robot to collect data on the accident location, which means that it cannot yet be used in the most urgent of rescue efforts.” The project to develop the robot has received €3.5m in EU funds and is now in its fourth year. Eindhoven to print five boulder-shaped homes in park

THE Netherlands is about to begin another ground-breaking project in the world of additive construction with a Flintstone-like cluster of five printed concrete houses, earmarked for the city of Eindhoven. Holland is already leading the way in printed bridges, and now it hopes to challenge for leadership in printed homes – the front runner here being France, which successfully printed a five-room dwelling in Nantes earlier this year. Called “Milestone”, the scheme will develop over five years, and the project team hope to make the process slicker as it gets the measure of the practical difficulties involved. Van Wijnen is the contractor,

and the design was by Houben/Van Mierlo architects. The property side is being handled by Vesteda, with Saint GobainWeber Beamix looking after the concrete, and Witteveen + Bos as the engineer. The project is being overseen by the city council and the Technical University of Eindhoven, which has previously worked on 3D -printed bridges. Thanks to a research group that has formed around Professor Theo Salet, and the university’s concrete printer, TU Eindhoven has become a centre of 3D printing. A park, the Groenplaats Bosrijk in Eindhoven, will be the setting for the houses, which are meant to resemble boulders deposited by a retreating ice sheet.

From a design point of view their irregular shape is one of the advantages of printing, which can be used to construct “almost any shape”, the university said. Van Wijnen comments on its website: “The houses will be printed one after the other, which means that each can benefit from what was learned on the previous, and can be adapted directly to the wishes of the residents. For example, the first house will be a single-storey structure printed off-site. The ambition is to print the fifth home on location as three layers. “We see Milestone not as an experiment, but as a pioneering innovation that will cause a stir in the construction sector.” (net)

TRIBUANA port in Kusamba village, Dawan, Klungkung, one of the port from which visitors can reach Nusa Penida Island has changed a lot over the years.

This port is now crowded with local and foreign visitors waiting for their boat to so they can go to Nusa Penida Island. The passenger lounge is often crowdedespecially on holidays, so many sit on the beach instead.

The parking area is also full and passengers seek shelter in any shade they can find. Although the boat operators are sometimes overwhelmed, they certainly welcome the business. Such scenes only started to become commonplace in the early 2000’s. According to 71 year old local residents Ni Wayan Kari, in the 1970”s and 80”s the port was very small and the black sandy beach was covered in salt drying platforms made out of coconut trees, neatly arranged from East to West. “The beach used to look beautiful with salt drying platforms lining the beach from Pesinggahan village to the west”, she recalled recently. Thatched-roofed huts with bamboo walls were also part of the scenery, but as the price of salt slowly dropped, the happy smiles of the salt farmers turned to wistful ones. Enthusiasm for salt farming shrivelled with time and now there are very few people pouring sea water onto the flattened sand. “Many salt farmers have stopped this activity. There are only three of us left”, she said. This white-haired woman chooses to keep going because she owns the land she works on and her son who works in Denpasar often comes to help out. “Otherwise I would have given up like the others”, she said. This work that she inherited from her parents requires patients and in recent years she has been encouraged by rising salt prices – now in the range of IDR 15,000-20,00 per kilo depending on the quality. Also the new port provides hope for a boost in sales. “Sometimes people will buy slat for their family here”, said Keri. The local government has also started paying attention to supporting the salt famers by proving sea water pumps so Kari no longer has to haul the water up herself. Dewa Nyoman Suyasa who used to work as a fishermen now works at the port loading ladders onto the boats. “Yes I remember there used to be a lot of salt farmers here, back when the port was still small”, he recollected. DENPASAR — Semara Wijaya Art Studio was entrusted to create a performance for the 40th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in the form of dance and contemporary gamelan music presented on the Ayodya stage of the Denpasar Art Center on Sunday afternoon (Jun. 24). The art studio was actually founded only a year ago, but quickly amassed some 200 members. In the future, they would like to work on the Rejang dance style that is typical of Angatelu village, Karangasem as this is where the dance studio is based (Antiga Kelod village, Manggis to be precise). Head of the art studio, I Gede Bawa Setiawan,, said that there is a lot of enthusiasm for dance and gamelan music amongst the people of Angantelu but there was nowhere to practice until the Semeara WIjaya Art Studio was

established in 2017. “The children are particularly enthusiastic but their parents also support us in the studio. Without them we are nothing. We will work together to preserve our culture”, said Setiawan. Everyday the studio holds dance, gamelan and pesantian (Psalmody chanting) practice at the studio and also explore specifically local culture and wisdom including the Angatelu style of Rejang that is different than other regions. “Actually we frequently perform in the village temple as a form of devotional work, but only in the traditional style. It is not easy to explore this tradition as here is no template”, he added. The Rejang of Angantelu, added Setiawan has its own unique characteristics. For one the dancers wear rice husks around their waist.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday denounced media reports detailing plans to impose restrictions on Chinese investment in US companies and on tech exports to China. Tabanan district now has another alternative in terms of natural hot spring pools. This tourist attraction is not only found at Penatahan village, but also at Angseri village, Baturiti, Tabanan. In a dark and often overlooked chapter of General Francisco Franco’s 1939-75 dictatorship, the newborns of some left-wing opponents of the regime, or unmarried or poor couples, were removed from their mothers and adopted. New mothers were frequently told their babies had died suddenly

within hours of birth and the hospital had taken care of their burials when in fact they were given or sold to another family. The practice began after Franco came to power after Spain’s 193639 civil war pitting left-wing Republicans against conservative Nationalists loyal to the general who was seeking to purge Spain of Marxist influence. Beginning in the 1950s it was expanded to remove new newborns from poor families as well as illegitimate babies. The guiding principle was

that the child would be better off raised by an affluent, conservative and devout Roman Catholic family. The system -- which allegedly involved a vast network of doctors, nurses, nuns and priests -- outlived Franco’s death in 1975 and carried on as an illegal baby trafficking network until 1987 when a new law regulating adoption was introduced. Three killed in fresh Papua violence: Indonesia authorities

Three people were killed by Papuan rebels on Monday, Indonesian authorities said, in the latest violence to hit the restive region ahead of regional elections. The separatists fired on a small plane carrying 15 police officers -- travelling to oversee the polls -- just after it landed at Nduga in the centre of the province, Papua military spokesman Muhammad Aidi said.

The plane’s pilot was injured in the attack, he added. Several rebels then killed a trio of street vendors as they fled the scene, Aidi said. “As they were fleeing, they shot and attacked vendors near the airport,” he said. “Three of them were shot dead while another was seriously injured.” A Papua police spokesman said authorities were looking for the shooters. The incident comes days after a pilot on another plane was shot and injured at the same airport. Indonesia holds regional elections on Wednesday that are

seen as a bellwether for the 2019 presidential polls. Papua, on the western half of New Guinea island, has been the scene of a simmering insurgency since it was annexed by Indonesia in the late 1960s. 50 monkeys rescued from street masked monkey show BEKASI - The Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) has rescued at least 50 monkeys from persons running the “topeng monyet,” local term for masked monkey show, in several regions of Indonesia`s West Java Province. “As of June 2018, we have rescued 50 monkeys through a joint program, called Stop Topeng Monyet, with the West Java Provincial Administration,” Coordinator of Wildlife Trade Confiscations of JAAN Wildlife Division, Zai, said here on Monday. The long-tailed macaques were rescued from several districts, such as Bandung, Cirebon, Tasikmalaya, Bogor, and Bekasi. JAAN revealed that the longtailed macaques are extremely popular in Indonesia as they are

used as dancing monkeys. They are called Topeng Monyet in Indonesian language. Having conducted observations during the Stop Topeng Monyet program, JAAN and the local administration of West Java have set a target to rescue 500 animals from street masked monkey shows in the region. They revealed that Bekasi District has the most Topeng Monyet shows than the other regions in West Java. “We found out that these monkeys were brought from Tasikmalaya. We have data showing that there are 500 families that train monkeys for Topeng Monyet shows there,” Zai revealed. The rescued monkeys will undergo rehabilitation and treatment for three years before being

released to the Tilu Mountain of Soreang, Bandung, West Java. They will be divided into four groups, each consisting of 15 monkeys. JAAN`s program in rescuing long-tailed macaques from being exploited as performers in the Topeng Monyet show is in line with the instruction of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to protect wild animals. “Wild animals are better in the forest,” Zai stated. LONDON - Having seen longtime rival Rafael Nadal tighten his iron-grip on Roland Garros, Roger Federer aims to extend his personal dominance of Wimbledon by claiming a ninth title at the All England Club. Despite his 37th birthday fast approaching, and having been stunned by Borna Coric in the Halle grasscourt final last weekend, Federer will still start Wimbledon as the overwhelming favourite to clinch a 21st major. Federer set new records 12 months ago when he defeated a hobbling Marin Cilic in the final, becoming both the tournament’s oldest champion and first to claim eight titles. That victory came after he decided to skip the entire claycourt season, a strategy he repeated this year as the Swiss sit at home watching Nadal romp to an 11th French Open. “I’m really going to love going to Wimbledon but being the defending champion always creates pressure,” said Federer, who was quick to shrug off his loss to Coric which ended a 20-match win streak on grass.

A week earlier, he had been buoyed by capturing the grass court title at Stuttgart. “Regardless of whether I won or lost in Halle I will be one of the favourites at Wimbledon.” Federer won his first Wimbledon -- and maiden Slam title -- in 2003. Since that time he has added seven more at the All England Club with Nadal winning twice, Novak Djokovic three times and Andy Murray taking two titles. Lleyton Hewitt, back in 2002, was the last man outside the modern-day ‘Big Four’ to win the championship. World Cup sees Iranian women score spot in the stands

For many of the thousands of joyful women packed into Tehran’s largest football stadium, their first ever chance to watch a game at a sports arena was a victory for freedom despite Iran’s agonising World Cup elimination.

Cheering and with their cheeks painted with the national colours, women showed they were just as caught up in the World Cup fever sweeping the country as they seized the opportunity to attend a live screening at the 100,000 capacity Azadi (Freedom) Stadium, which, like other sports arenas, has been off-limits to them since the the Islamic revolution of 1979. While the exuberance turned to tears when Iran missed the chance to snatch a last gasp winner against Portugal, ending their tournament dreams, some in the mixed gender stands said they would still treasure the landmark night watching an open-air screening of the national team. “It felt weird to buy my ticket online, it’s so exciting to come to the stadium,” said Arezou, a psychologist in her thirties. “When I felt the heat of the crowd in the stadium, I told myself I really wanted to remember this moment as one of the best of my life.” The decision to throw open the gates of the iconic stadium came after Iran’s opening victory over Morocco, when tens of thousands took to the streets of the capital in rare and wild celebration, many of them women. Many Iranian clerics oppose women attending football matches, saying they must be protected from the masculine atmosphere, though the ruling is frequently criticised from across the political spectrum. “It’s the first time I have come to the stadium. I really wanted to be here and I am so happy! Even if we don’t win, it will still be a victory and we are proud of our players,” said Raana, a flight attendant. - Nail-biter -

Iran’s opening game had initially been due to be shown live in stadiums and parks but authorities cancelled all open-air screenings just hours before kick-off forcing fans to watch in cinemas. After the public celebrations of that victory, Tehran provincial council buckled and again said stadiums would screen the games. “I really hope this is the start of a culture in which women can go see games in stadiums. From now on, it’s possible,” said Arezou. At half-time, from a podium on the Tehran pitch, well-known actress Behnoosh Bakhtiari thanked President Hassan Rouhani for the evening and expressed hope that similar opportunities will follow. A moderate conservative, who was re-elected in May 2017, Rouhani has said repeatedly he wants to see women at sports stadiums, but the idea has met fierce opposition from hardliners. After the game, fans both female and male celebrated in the streets into the early hours, undaunted by Iran’s elimination. (afp)

Sweden coach Janne Andersson must find a way to pick up his deflated players following their devastating defeat to Germany in a World Cup Group F that stands tantalisingly poised. Sweden were on course for the last 16 until Toni Kroos stepped up with a wonderful winner in the fifth minute of injury time to rescue the reigning champions 2-1 in a Saturday-night thriller. It left Group F on a knife-edge going into the final round of games on Wednesday, when Sweden face Mexico in Yekaterinburg while at the same time Germany play South Korea in Kazan. Mexico have six points and one foot in the knockout rounds, with Germany and the Swedes both on three points and with the same goal difference and having scored the same number. Sweden will progress if they better Germany’s result. Several Sweden players were left prone on the turf such was the late, excruciating nature of the defeat to Germany. Andersson said: “The whole group is still alive so we will have to lick our wounds and come back for the last game.” The 55-year-old, who accused Germany’s backroom staff of “rubbing it in our faces”, also needs to deal with the delicate fall-out surrounding his winger Jimmy Durmaz. Durmaz, born in Sweden to Assyrian parents who emigrated from Turkey, was subjected to racial hatred and death threats on social media for giving away the foul that led to Kroos’s late winner. The 29-year-old was moved to read out a statement to reporters at the team’s Black Sea coast base in Gelendzhik on Sunday, saying of the abuse: “Who the hell does such things? “It is completely unacceptable.”

The biggest problem for Mexico, who will have the majority of the Yekaterinburg Arena behind them on Wednesday, will be complacency. A deserved 1-0 victory over Germany was followed by a 2-1 win against the Koreans to put them in control of the group, but they still need a point to make absolutely sure of reaching the knockout rounds. Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa said Mexico are determined to secure the result they need to make sure of top spot, revealing that the squad is fired by criticism they received from home fans before arriving in Russia. The Mexicans were booed during a friendly win over Scotland at the Azteca Stadium. Several members of the squad, including Ochoa, were also lambasted for their presence at a farewell party attended by around 30 prostitutes. “We always knew we would have to fight all the way to the last game,” Ochoa said. “We remember everything this squad has been through. We haven’t forgotten hearing the boos at the Azteca, and that has strengthened us mentally,” Ochoa said. West Ham United striker Javier Hernandez became the first Mexican player to score 50 goals for his country -- in 104 appearances -- with his strike against South Korea. As West Ham fans know well, the 30-year-old can be hit and miss, yet “Chicharito” seems to reserve his best performances for the green of Mexico. “He’s a great goalscorer, but offers a lot more than that,” said Mexico team-mate Miguel Layun. “He’s an incredibly dynamic player.
