“So, I reiterate that there is no continuation of geothermal project. We reject the continuation of the power plant project. It is for the sake of the nature of Bali,” said Eka Wiryastuti. Her party also questioned why the geothermal power plant (PLTPB) project at Bedugul emerged again. Actually, the project has been rejected by the Bali House. “We are very dear to the nature of Bali, especially Bedugul area. So, there is no longer the continuation of geothermal project,” she stated. She hoped the geothermal project at Bedugul not to be tampered with as it had been finally rejected
by the Bali House. Her party worried, if the project would be continued it surely kindled new polemic, especially in Tabanan. Aside from rejecting the continuation of geothermal project, Regent Eka also disagreed to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. She said the reclamation would have an impact on the opening of the opportunities for mass urbanization, not to mention the issue of environmental damages. “Likewise, I reject the reclamation. It will have an impact on the environment of Bali. Do not let the reclamation plan trigger new issues. Bali should be sustainable,” she said.

Embattle drugs and HIV/AIDS shouldn’t half-heartedly Bali Post
DENPASAR - Two worrying things are now shadowing Bali, namely drug trafficking and the transmission of HIV/ AIDS. All this time, the drug trafficking is rife enough in Denpasar. On the other hand, the closing of Dolly prostitute house in Surabaya, East Java, also tends to affect the emigration of the commercial sex workers to Bali. This condition is very vulnerable to the spread of HIV/AIDS in Bali. To combat both social cases, stakeholders and the public should not take action half-heartedly. The community from hamlet level must be activate and empowered to take preventive measures. One of the hamlets in Denpasar initiated such an effort was Kertha Bhuana hamlet, Dangin Puri Kangin, East Denpasar. On Tuesday night (Jun 24), the hamlet invited a number of important elements such as the Provincial Narcotics Agency (BNP), County/ Municipality Narcotics Agency (BNK), police, military, subdistrict head and Denpasar municipality to disseminate HIV/AIDS and drug distribution prevention, chiefly targeting teenagers. One of the ways to awaken the residents was through the staging of the arts, such as the dance played by parents, teenagers and Bondres comedy in combination with Joged Dance.
“Through the staging of the art, we expect the role of community from the bottom level can be more active in drug eradication and HIV/AIDS prevention,” said the headman of Dangin Puri Kangin, I Gusti Ngurah Putrawan. Meanwhile, the Head of the BNP Bali, Gusti Ketut Budiartha, who was present at Kertha Bhuana hamlet said that his party hoped the active role of the community to begin participating in supervising the hamlet territory from drug trafficking. “Moreover, Denpasar includes the drug trafficking area,” he explained. SEMARAPURA - Klungkung government seriously responded to the mutilation case occurred on Jalan Kenyeri IX, Jelantik Kuribatu hamlet, Gelgel village, Klungkung. The government prepared a Pecaruan Labuh Gentuh ritual at central intersection of Klungkung. The Caru Labuh Gentuh will be conducted after the implementation of presidential election. Such ritual plan was decided after the Klungkung government acquired some inputs from various parties.
After conducting a closed meeting on Wednesday (Jun 25), the Acting Regent of Klungkung, Made Kasta, said the spiritual effort was meant to purify the territory after Klungkung became the location of sadistic murder to mutilate the victim. Even, the mutilated body parts were disposed to 13 crime scenes in the region of Klungkung and Karangasem. In addition to focusing on the catus pata or central intersection, the similar Caru Labuh Gentuh would also be carried out at the murder scene. Meanwhile, at the location
where the victim’s mutilated body parts were disposed would be organized the caru manca sata. “With this ceremony, hopefully, the peace of the region can be maintained,” said Kasta. A religious leader, Dewa Soma, after meeting with Made Kasta added that Caru Labuh Gentuh ritual would be held because the mutilation case was considered a major case causing the palemahan (territory) of Klungkung to be spiritually impure. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MILAN — The relaxed silhouette of the Salvatore Ferragamo menswear collection for next summer seems almost to deny the traditional tailoring responsible for its creation. Massimiliano Giornetti, who has been designing Ferragamo menswear for 14 years, defined the silhouette as light. “It is completely deconstructed,” he said backstage after the preview show Sunday, the second day of Milan Fashion Week. It is a deconstruction that doesn’t seek to challenge the sartorial rules, but rather reinforce them. As if to emphasize the fluidity of the look, the color that unites the collection is an aqueous blue-green, which matches soothingly with earthier tones
of rust, gray, brown and beige. The collection centers on sportswear, with a variety of jackets including longer overcoats, double-breasted jackets that are slightly cropped, blousons with gathered waists that function as a bomber jacket and, inventively, blazers that are belted from the inside or outside. The outfits are finished with double-pleated trousers or loose-fitting Bermudas. Emphasizing the casual nature of the collection, scarves are favored over ties. For the traveler, Giornetti designed large totes in waxed suede with leather accents on the corners and handles. Shoes, Ferragamo’s calling card, are sturdy sandals and lace-ups with solid soles and thick fringe.

The silhouette was relaxed and easy to wear, with jackets worn open and crew-necks or inventive tops favored over the traditional white or blue shirts. Trousers were roomy, pleated and often cuffed, but also straight and cropped. The preferred short was the Bermuda. Ties were replaced by foulards knotted snuggly on the neck or scarves tucked inside coats. There was little denim — except on the Prada runway where there was almost nothing else. Distressed garments got a new life, as if to honor a man’s self-conscious nature about dressing well.

Bali to build more long toll roads Antara
DENPASAR - The Bali provincial administration plans to build more toll roads between Denpasar and other district capitals in the tourist island. Bali already has a long toll bridge extending over the sea coast between the tourist beach area of Nusa Dua and the regency of Badung. Similar projects of flyovers will be built between Denpasar and Gilimanuk in western coast of Bali and between Denpasar and Singaraja in the northern coast, Bali’s deputy Governor I Ketut Sudikerta said on Thursday. Sudikerta said the project is still in the pipeline, adding the provincial administration is still studying the plan including investment for the mega projects. Flyovers linking Denpasar and the western and northern parts of the province are getting urgent to cope with the traffic congestion, he said. The highway between Denpasar and Singaraja in the north has too many bends that it could take four hours to cover the distance especially with the traffic jams, he said. With the flyover the distance could be covered in a much shorter time, he added. Flyover is the only solution the growing worse traffic jams in the highways and to cut short the distance, he said. He said construction is expected to start in 2016/2017 and to be completed in one or two years. Flyover between Denpasar and Gilimanuk via the regencies of Tabanan and Jembrana and between Denpasar and Singaraja via the regencies of Tabanan and Buleleng would help boost economic development in the district areas and all Bali, he said.

NEGARA - The number of tourist buses going in and out of Bali via Gilimanuk Harbor has increased since the end of last week. Passenger surge of tourist buses increased to 100 percent. Such condition caused the shipping services slightly delayed. As on Tuesday night (Jun 24), a queue occurred to tourist buses and trucks leading to the vessel. From field observation, since Sunday (Jun 22) tourist buses from a number of counties on Java Island started booming. For instance, a school entourage could involve at least 5-6 buses, coupled with interprovincial buses (AKAP) holding many passengers. One of the administrators of tourist buses, Kadek Dwi, recognized the growing number of tourist buses entering the holiday season. Each day, the number of tourist bus reached 100 units or more. Operations Manager of the ASDP Gilimanuk, Wahyudi Susianto, confirmed the increasing number of vehicles especially buses and tourism on Wednesday (Jun 25). According to him, the increase reached 100-200 percent each day. Such condition also triggered a queue when getting into the vessel. “On Tuesday night, a queue happened because many vehicles came in. ABUJA, Nigeria — An explosion blamed on Islamic extremists rocked a shopping mall in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and police said 21 people were killed. The blast came as Nigerians were preparing to watch their country’s Super Eagles play Argentina at the World Cup in Brazil. Many shops at the mall have TV screens but it was unclear if the explosion was timed to coincide with the match, which started an hour later. Witnesses said body parts were scattered around the exit to Emab Plaza, in Abuja’s upscale Wuse 2 suburb. One witness said he thought the bomb was dropped at the entrance to the mall by a motorcyclist. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. Soldiers shot and killed one suspect as he tried to escape on a power bike and police detained a second suspect, Mike Omeri, the government spokesman for the insurgency, said in a statement. Billows of black smoke could be seen from a mile (kilometer) away, and police said 17 vehicles were burnt out in the blast. “I heard the explosion and (felt) the building shaking,” said Shuaibu Baba, who had a narrow escape. He said he rushed downstairs to find that the driver who had dropped him a few minutes earlier was dead. “I asked the driver to come with me, and he said ‘No,’ he would wait for me in the car.” Police Superintendent Frank Mba said 17 people were wounded and 21 bodies were recovered. “When you take those first steps, even if they’re hard, and even if there are politics sometimes, you start building momentum and you start mobilizing larger and larger communities,” Obama said. “Every step makes a difference.” Obama’s remarks to the League of Conservation Voters served as a progress report for his climate plan, which the president laid out with much fanfare last June at Georgetown University. Twelve months later, much of the plan is in motion, although the most ambitious steps are still up in the air and will take years to be fully realized. The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, a nonpartisan group formerly associated with the Pew Center, said this week that Obama has made at least some progress on most of the 75 goals he laid out last June. Those steps will require follow-through, but if the administration keeps up the pace it achieved in the past year, the U.S. could meet its 17 percent goal, the center said. The centerpiece of Obama’s plan, carbon limits on existing power plants, is on track after the Environmental Protection Agency met its deadline to issue a draft, although the timeline for states to comply has been delayed in some cases. Concerns are mounting that the country’s housing market is overinflated, with London house prices rising almost 19 percent in the year to April. Bank of England Governor Mark Carney has described the situation as the greatest risk to the economy. The International Monetary Fund is worried. Ditto European Union officials. The pressure is on to act now rather than risk having it all come crashing down later, dragging Britain back into recession. A Bank of England committee set up in the wake of the economic crisis to ensure financial stability is widely expected to take action Thursday to cool the market. The move will be of interest globally, as its outcome will shed some light on how much a central bank can keep a specific sector from overheating without putting the brakes on the economy as a whole. “This may not be the mother of all house price bubbles, but it may be the sister,” said David Blanchflower, a former member of the Bank of England’s Mon-

WASHINGTON - Developing economies are increasingly hurt by the way global corporations exploit taxation differences and move profits to low-tax locations, according to an International Monetary Fund report Wednesday. But few countries can protect themselves in a competition for direct investment that increasingly appears like a “race to the bottom” in setting corporate tax rates, the IMF said. Moreover, companies are increasingly able to shift and relocate more intangible assets -like intellectual property -- to avoid taxes. The IMF said that the more countries give in to investors’ requirements on taxes, the more they are hurting the global community. In addition, tax-cutting and legal tax avoidance by corporations are having an impact on countries’ fiscal strength, undermining their ability to fund government just at a time when many are fighting deficits. Incentives are “significantly undermining revenue in developing countries,” the IMF said, noting that “overall fiscal performance is more vulnerable to pressures on these receipts.” “The amounts at stake in a single taxplanning case now quite routinely run into tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. These sums may be small relative to total tax revenue in sizable advanced economies, but are large for the developing countries,” the report said. That is especially the case in countries reliant on extractive industries like mining. Mining companies frequently load up on debt to reduce the tax they pay to the host country. As important in denying countries tax receipts are corporate schemes like transfer pricing. “Identifying the country that is the ‘source’ of income... is increasingly problematic,” the report said. “It has been made more difficult, conceptually and practically, by the increased importance of intra-firm transactions.” It also said that companies increasingly exploit intangible assets like patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property “which can be much more easily relocated than can the bricksand-mortar facilities of the world.” The report showed how foreign direct investment is handled through low-tax locations as a strategy. Half of outgoing direct investment from Brazil goes to havens like Austria, the Cayman Islands, and the British Virgin Islands, before it goes to the final destination. Two-thirds of outgoing direct investment from Russia goes first to havens like Cyprus and the Netherlands. The IMF spelled out the need for a “global architecture” for taxation in the way that trade is increasingly governed by international treaties. But it warned that fixes can bring their own difficulties in how taxable income might be apportioned.

One of the priests discovering the temple, Mangku Gede Linggih, got divine inspiration and found the existence of a well or spring on beach. Despite the spring located in the sea sand, the water emanating does not taste salty but fresh. Based on the inspiration, it was then established a simple shrine (using tree branches) at several locations. Until now, the temple had complete buildings funded by the donations from devotees who did purificatory rite and had a vow. He said the temple priest Mangku Gede Linggih who found the temple site has passed away. As the successor, he was replaced by his wife Jro Mangku Lingsir Mangku Sumpang living in Gilimanuk. Meanwhile, Winada added that every full moon, there were always devotees coming from all over Bali and even from Java.
They all came to do purificatory rite directly on the beach. But at high tides, the temple attendant had taken holy water for purificatory rite from the three springs and kept it in the temple area. Having performed the purificatory rite, devotees entered into the three temple areas. Devotees said prayers at the shrine located in the innermost courtyard. Here lay a number of three-tiered meru shrines as well as the shrine respectively dedicated for the veneration of the Lord Kasiap, Balian and Lord Lumajang. In the meantime, on the west area outside the main building and few meters from the three springs sat a shrine. It was used to venerate Goddess Ayu Giri Putri Dapdapsari. Then, on the north side could be found a shrine located rather far away with a complete building. Here, according to Winada, was venerated the Goddess Ayu Mas Melanting. During the visit, a number of devotees, mostly from outside Jembrana, came to say prayers. They delivered various invocations, some of which related to recovery from illness, while some others asked for a job opportunity. The three springs used for purificatory rite were arranged by means of concrete manholes at three sites which were adjacent to one other. It was the holy water used for the purificatory rites. “The water of each well tastes different, namely bitter and plain but not salty,” he explained. (kmb)

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea’s president has decided to retain the country’s current prime minister — who holds the No. 2 spot in the government — after two possible replacements for the job both abandoned their nominations because of questions over past behavior, officials said Thursday. Prime Minister Chung Hong-won had offered to step down after April’s ferry disaster as a way to assuage enormous public anger over the tragedy, which left more than 300 people dead or missing. President Park Geun-hye tried to replace him and reshuffle other Cabinet officials to try to win back public trust. But her two subsequent choices for prime minister withdrew their names even before their confirmation hearings began — one on Tuesday amid criticism over his past comments that allegedly supported Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea and the other last month over alleged ethical lapses. The two consecutive withdrawals dealt a blow to Park, whose approval rating has plummeted after the disaster. On Thursday, senior presidential official Yoon Doo-hyun said in a televised briefing that Park has now rejected Chung’s resignation offer and asked him to stay on to prevent a further vacuum in state management. Chung said he agreed, and that he would strive to help Park press ahead with reform measures promised after the sinking.

He is accused of pocketing 183 million pesos ($4.2 million) in kickbacks. Enrile allegedly pocketed 172 million pesos ($3.94 million) in kickbacks, but an arrest warrant has not been issued yet for the 90-year-old former senate president. Estrada and his father were also accused of plunder in 2001 in a landmark trial that followed the president’s ouster in a popular uprising. The younger Estrada was acquitted in 2007, but his father was convicted of illegally amassing about $81 million in bribes and proceeds from illegal gambling. He was later pardoned by his successor. Bodegon said that his client, Revilla, feels the cases are politically motivated to hurt his chances for running for president in 2016. A bail hearing will be held next month for Revilla.

JAKARTA — A Nazi-themed music video supporting a candidate in next month’s Indonesian presidential election is causing outrage at home and abroad. The video, “Indonesia Bangkit,” or “Awakening Indonesia,” is based on Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” It shows musician Ahmad Dhani wearing a fasciststyle uniform and holding an Indonesian Garuda bird emblem that resembles the Nazis’ imperial eagle. According to the German news magazine Der Spiegel, the military costume is similar to the uniform worn by SS commander Heinrich Himmler. The video was uploaded on YouTube as a campaign song for Prabowo Subianto, a former army general who has been accused of abducting pro-democracy activists in 1998 and instigating deadly riots. Brian May, Queen’s lead guitarist, has waded into the controversy, saying “of course this is completely unauthorized by us.” Asvi Warman Adam, a noted historian from the Indonesian Science Institute, said the video defiles Indonesia’s state symbol, the Garuda bird. “It is clear that Indonesia’s Constitution opposes all kinds of fascism as done by Nazis in the past,” he
said. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s disaster agency warned Wednesday that neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia could be hit by more choking smog, after a huge jump in forest fires in a province at the centre of an air pollution crisis last year. Fires in Riau province, on Indonesia’s western Sumatra island, caused the worst haze in Southeast Asia for more than a decade in June last year, affecting daily life for millions and sparking a heated diplomatic row. June is the start of the forest fire season -- when slash-and-burn techniques are used to clear land quickly and cheaply, often for palm oil plantations -- and disaster officials said the number of blazes in Riau was rising quickly. A total of 366 “hotspots” -- either forest fires or areas likely to soon go up in flames -- had been detected in the province on Wednesday, up from 97 the previous day, according to disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “We must be on alert as the wind is travelling east-northeast. The likelihood of the smog reaching Singapore and Malaysia is getting higher,” Nugroho said. Experts have said that an expected El Nino weather phenomenon later this year is likely to fan the forest fires as conditions become drier than usual. El Nino drags precipitation across the Pacific Ocean, leaving countries in-
cluding Indonesia drier and parts of the Americas wetter. But the latest outbreak of forest fires was yet to have any serious impact on daily life in Sumatra, and the skies over Singapore were still free of haze. The Williams Formula 1 team’s upsurge in form over the past two races should not be taken as a sign it will be that competitive for the rest of the season, according to rival McLaren. Williams overtook McLaren for fifth place in the constructors’ championship by finishing third and fourth in the Austrian Grand Prix, and could have won the previous race in Canada following Mercedes’ troubles but for a botched pitstop for Felipe Massa. McLaren has been less competitive over the past two events than its fellow Mercedes customer team, and could only score a best finish of seventh in Austria despite feeling that a major aerodynamic upgrade of the MP4-29 was step in the right direction. McLaren racing director Eric Boullier praised the job done by Williams with is FW36, but said form would continue to fluctuate depending on the circuit. “It’s interesting because it shows we have a little bit of a strange pecking order in some races, just because of the [track] layout,” Boullier said, when asked whether Williams’ form in Austria provided hope that Mercedes could be challenged further this season. “Williams has built a good car - they have some weaknesses but a lot of strengths on some track layouts. “On a twisty track like Monaco they were not in good form, but on a track with more chicanes and long straightlines - like Canada or Austria - you could see they were on good form. “This year is very dictated by the power unit, the driveability of the car, and how you deploy your energy - and I think this is why you have this change in the classification across different track layouts.”

The Williams Formula 1 team’s upsurge in form over the past two races should not be taken as a sign it will be that competitive for the rest of the season, according to rival McLaren. Williams overtook McLaren for fifth place in the constructors’ championship by finishing third and fourth in the Austrian Grand Prix, and could have won the previous race in Canada following Mercedes’ troubles but for a botched pitstop for Felipe Massa. McLaren has been less competitive over the past two events than its fellow Mercedes customer team, and could only score a best finish of seventh in Austria despite feeling that a major aerodynamic upgrade of the MP4-29 was step in the right direction. McLaren racing director Eric Boullier praised the job done by Williams with is FW36, but said form would continue to fluctuate depending on the circuit. “It’s interesting because it shows we have a little bit of a strange pecking order in some races, just because of the [track] layout,” Boullier said, when asked whether Williams’ form in Austria provided hope that Mercedes could be challenged further this season. “Williams has built a good car - they have some weaknesses but a lot of strengths on some track layouts. “On a twisty track like Monaco they were not in good form, but on a track with more chicanes and long straightlines - like Canada or Austria - you could see they were on good form. “This year is very dictated by the power unit, the driveability of the car, and how you deploy your energy - and I think this is why you have this change in the classification across different track layouts.”

JOHANNESBURG — A non-profit group that manages seven national parks in Africa says one of its employees, an American pilot, is missing after air traffic controllers lost contact with his small plane between Nigeria and Cameroon. African Parks said pilot Bill Fitzpatrick reported to the control tower at Douala, Cameroon on Sunday night that he was approaching the city, but
the aircraft did not land. The Johannesburg-based group says Cameroon and U.S. authorities are helping to search for the plane. It says the Cessna 172 was flown from the United States to Senegal, where Fitzpatrick picked it up last week. His final destination was to be Congo; Fitzpatrick is employed at the Odzala-Kokoua National Park, which is run by African Parks. The plane was to be used for anti-poaching surveillance.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea’s president has decided to retain the country’s current prime minister — who holds the No. 2 spot in the government — after two possible replacements for the job both abandoned their nominations because of questions over past behavior, officials said Thursday. Prime Minister Chung Hong-won had offered to step down after April’s ferry disaster as a way to assuage enormous public anger over the tragedy, which left more than 300 people dead or missing. President Park Geun-hye tried to replace him and reshuffle other Cabinet officials to try to win back public trust. But her two subsequent choices for prime minister withdrew their names even before their confirmation hearings began — one on Tuesday amid criticism over his past comments that allegedly supported Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea and the other last month over alleged ethical lapses. The two consecutive withdrawals dealt a blow to Park, whose approval rating has plummeted after the disaster. On Thursday, senior presidential official Yoon Doo-hyun said in a televised briefing that Park has now rejected Chung’s resignation offer and asked him to stay on to prevent a further vacuum in state management. Chung said he agreed, and that he would strive to help Park press ahead with reform measures promised after the sinking.
South Korea’s executive power is concentrated in the president but the prime minister leads the country if the president becomes incapacitated. A person nominated for the job must be approved by the National Assembly. It’s not clear whether Chung’s retaining would help Park facing mounting political offensive by her rivals. The main liberal opposition party on Thursday criticized Park’s decision, calling it an acknowledgement of her government’s incompetence. Some of Park’s choices for other Cabinet ministers have already faced snowballing criticism over their past behaviors such as alleged plagiarism of research papers. They are required to undergo parliamentary hearings, although their appointments don’t need legislative endorsements.
MANILA — One of three Philippine senators accused of plunder refused to enter a plea Thursday during arraignment by the anti-graft court in the biggest corruption trial in the country in more than a decade. The court instead entered a not guilty plea for Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr., an action movie star accused of receiving 224 million pesos ($5.1 million) in kickbacks from a scam that allegedly diverted millions of dollars from anti-poverty and development funds allotted to lawmakers’ pet projects. The high-profile prosecutions bolster President Benigno Aquino III’s campaign to fight high-profile corruption that has plagued the nation of 97 million for decades. The problem has festered amid a culture of impunity among powerful politicians and their allies, weak law enforcement and a notoriously slow justice system. Still, it’s unclear whether the charges will lead to convictions, which have been rare in major cases. Revilla has denied taking kickbacks or stealing money from state funds, but his lawyer Joel Bodegon said he advised the senator not to enter a plea so that
several pending motions questioning the validity of the charges will not be dismissed. Two other prominent senators are accused in the case — Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada. They have not been arraigned yet. Estrada, son of an ex-president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, joined Revilla in detention at the national police headquarters on Monday. He is accused of pocketing 183 million pesos ($4.2 million) in kickbacks. Enrile allegedly pocketed 172 million pesos ($3.94 million) in kickbacks, but an arrest warrant has not been issued yet for the 90-year-old former senate president. Estrada and his father were also accused of plunder in 2001 in a landmark trial that followed the president’s ouster in a popular uprising. The younger Estrada was acquitted in 2007, but his father was convicted of illegally amassing about $81 million in bribes and proceeds from illegal gambling. He was later pardoned by his successor. Bodegon said that his client, Revilla, feels the cases are politically motivated to hurt his chances for running for president in 2016. A bail hearing will be held next month for Revilla.

JAKARTA — A Nazi-themed music video supporting a candidate in next month’s Indonesian presidential election is causing outrage at home and abroad. The video, “Indonesia Bangkit,” or “Awakening Indonesia,” is based on Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” It shows musician Ahmad Dhani wearing a fasciststyle uniform and holding an Indonesian Garuda bird emblem that resembles the Nazis’ imperial eagle. According to the German news magazine Der Spiegel, the military costume is similar to the uniform worn by SS commander Heinrich Himmler. The video was uploaded on YouTube as a campaign song for Prabowo Subianto, a former army general who has been accused of abducting pro-democracy activists in 1998 and instigating deadly riots. Brian May, Queen’s lead guitarist, has waded into the controversy, saying “of course this is completely unauthorized by us.” Asvi Warman Adam, a noted historian from the Indonesian Science Institute, said the video defiles Indonesia’s state symbol, the Garuda bird. “It is clear that Indonesia’s Constitution opposes all kinds of fascism as done by Nazis in the past,” he
said. Joshua Oppenheimer, the Oscar-nominated director of the documentary “The Act of Killing,” about the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people across Indonesia in 1965-66 in the name of fighting communism, said the video “is not a clever foreign policy move for Prabowo, unless he really wants to alienate all of Europe — and the rest of the human community.” He added, however, that given Prabowo’s background, “perhaps he doesn’t care.” In an interview with American journalist Allan Nairn in 2001, Prabowo said Indonesia needed an “authoritarian regime” and indicated he was willing to be called a “fascist dictator.” The July 9 election pits Prabowo against Jakarta Gov. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s disaster agency warned Wednesday that neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia could be hit by more choking smog, after a huge jump in forest fires in a province at the centre of an air pollution crisis last year. Fires in Riau province, on Indonesia’s western Sumatra island, caused the worst haze in Southeast Asia for more than a decade in June last year, affecting daily life for millions and sparking a heated diplomatic row. June is the start of the forest fire season -- when slash-and-burn techniques are used to clear land quickly and cheaply, often for palm oil plantations -- and disaster officials said the number of blazes in Riau was rising quickly. A total of 366 “hotspots” -- either forest fires or areas likely to soon go up in flames -- had been detected in the province on Wednesday, up from 97 the previous day, according to disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “We must be on alert as the wind is travelling east-northeast. The likelihood of the smog reaching Singapore and Malaysia is getting higher,” Nugroho said. Experts have said that an expected El Nino weather phenomenon later this year is likely to fan the forest fires as conditions become drier than usual. El Nino drags precipitation across the Pacific Ocean, leaving countries in-
cluding Indonesia drier and parts of the Americas wetter. But the latest outbreak of forest fires was yet to have any serious impact on daily life in Sumatra, and the skies over Singapore were still free of haze. Authorities said that most of the forest fires last year were deliberately lit to clear land. Slash-and-burn is a traditional farming technique, but environmental groups also accuse big companies of using the method. According to the Washington-based World Resources Institute, a large number of the recent fires have been linked to paper and palm oil giants and their suppliers. Using data from satellite mapping tools, it found 75 hotspots between Saturday and Monday in areas where Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), one of the world’s largest paper companies, has operations. A further 43 hotspots were found in areas occupied by suppliers to paper company Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) in the same period. Aida Greenbury, APP managing director of sustainability and stakeholder engagement, said 10 fires had occurred on forest land run by APP’s suppliers in the past five days, all of which had been extinguished. “We do not practise and highly condemn slash-and-burn activity,” she said. APRIL said it had agreed to support the fire-fighting effort, lending its water pumps and a company helicopter.

LONDON — Is Britain’s economy heading for bubble trouble? Concerns are mounting that the country’s housing market is overinflated, with London house prices rising almost 19 percent in the year to April. Bank of England Governor Mark Carney has described the situation as the greatest risk to the economy. The International Monetary Fund is worried. Ditto European Union officials. The pressure is on to act now rather than risk having it all come crashing down later, dragging Britain back into recession. A Bank of England committee set up in the wake of the economic crisis to ensure financial stability is widely expected to take action Thursday to cool the market. The move will be of interest globally, as its outcome will shed some light on how much a central bank can keep a specific sector from overheating without putting the brakes on the economy as a whole. “This may not be the mother of all house price bubbles, but it may be the sister,” said David Blanchflower, a former member of the Bank of England’s Mon-
etary Policy Committee who now teaches at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. “Does it make any sense for the economy? The answer has to be no.” Driven by interest from wealthy investors, an improving economy and pent up demand in a country with a chronic housing shortage, house prices rose 18.7 percent in the capital and about 10 percent in the rest of the country in the year ending in April, according to official statistics. That far outstripped the 0.7 percent increase in wages including bonuses during the same period. That means Britons have to borrow more to buy a home. Homeowners in Britain often get

WASHINGTON - Developing economies are increasingly hurt by the way global corporations exploit taxation differences and move profits to low-tax locations, according to an International Monetary Fund report Wednesday. But few countries can protect themselves in a competition for direct investment that increasingly appears like a “race to the bottom” in setting corporate tax rates, the IMF said. Moreover, companies are increasingly able to shift and relocate more intangible assets -like intellectual property -- to avoid taxes. The IMF said that the more countries give in to investors’ requirements on taxes, the more they are hurting the global community. In addition, tax-cutting and legal tax avoidance by corporations are having an impact on countries’ fiscal strength, undermining their ability to fund government just at a time when many are fighting deficits. Incentives are “significantly undermining revenue in developing countries,” the IMF said, noting that “overall fiscal performance is more vulnerable to pressures on these receipts.” “The amounts at stake in a single taxplanning case now quite routinely run into tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. These sums may be small relative to total tax revenue in sizable advanced economies, but are large for the developing countries,” the report said. That is especially the case in countries reliant on extractive industries like mining. Mining companies frequently load up on debt to reduce the tax they pay to the host country. As important in denying countries tax receipts are corporate schemes like transfer pricing. “Identifying the country that is the ‘source’ of income... is increasingly problematic,” the report said. “It has been made more difficult, conceptually and practically, by the increased importance of intra-firm transactions.” It also said that companies increasingly exploit intangible assets like patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property “which can be much more easily relocated than can the bricksand-mortar facilities of the world.” The report showed how foreign direct investment is handled through low-tax locations as a strategy. Half of outgoing direct investment from Brazil goes to havens like Austria, the Cayman Islands, and the British Virgin Islands, before it goes to the final destination. Two-thirds of outgoing direct investment from Russia goes first to havens like Cyprus and the Netherlands. The IMF spelled out the need for a “global architecture” for taxation in the way that trade is increasingly governed by international treaties. But it warned that fixes can bring their own difficulties in how taxable income might be apportioned.

Despite the spring located in the sea sand, the water emanating does not taste salty but fresh. Based on the inspiration, it was then established a simple shrine (using tree branches) at several locations. Until now, the temple had complete buildings funded by the donations from devotees who did purificatory rite and had a vow. He said the temple priest Mangku Gede Linggih who found the temple site has passed away. As the successor, he was replaced by his wife Jro Mangku Lingsir Mangku Sumpang living in Gilimanuk. Meanwhile, Winada added that every full moon, there were always devotees coming from all over Bali and even from Java.
They all came to do purificatory rite directly on the beach. But at high tides, the temple attendant had taken holy water for purificatory rite from the three springs and kept it in the temple area. Having performed the purificatory rite, devotees entered into the three temple areas. Devotees said prayers at the shrine located in the innermost courtyard. Here lay a number of three-tiered meru shrines as well as the shrine respectively dedicated for the veneration of the Lord Kasiap, Balian and Lord Lumajang. In the meantime, on the west area outside the main building and few meters from the three springs sat a shrine. It was used to venerate Goddess Ayu Giri Putri Dapdapsari. Then, on the north side could be found a shrine located rather far away with a complete building. Here, according to Winada, was venerated the Goddess Ayu Mas Melanting. During the visit, a number of devotees, mostly from outside Jembrana, came to say prayers. They delivered various invocations, some of which related to recovery from illness, while some others asked for a job opportunity. The three springs used for purificatory rite were arranged by means of concrete manholes at three sites which were adjacent to one other. It was the holy water used for the purificatory rites. “The water of each well tastes different, namely bitter and plain but not salty,” he explained. (kmb)

NEGARA - The number of tourist buses going in and out of Bali via Gilimanuk Harbor has increased since the end of last week. Passenger surge of tourist buses increased to 100 percent. Such condition caused the shipping services slightly delayed. As on Tuesday night (Jun 24), a queue occurred to tourist buses and trucks leading to the vessel. From field observation, since Sunday (Jun 22) tourist buses from a number of counties on Java Island started booming. For instance, a school entourage could involve at least 5-6 buses, coupled with interprovincial buses (AKAP) holding many passengers. One of the administrators of tourist buses, Kadek Dwi, recognized the growing number of tourist buses entering the holiday season. Each day, the number of tourist bus reached 100 units or more. Operations Manager of the ASDP Gilimanuk, Wahyudi Susianto, confirmed the increasing number of vehicles especially buses and tourism on Wednesday (Jun 25). According to him, the increase reached 100-200 percent each day. Such condition also triggered a queue when getting into the vessel. “On Tuesday night, a queue happened because many vehicles came in. MILAN — The relaxed silhouette of the Salvatore Ferragamo menswear collection for next summer seems almost to deny the traditional tailoring responsible for its creation. Massimiliano Giornetti, who has been designing Ferragamo menswear for 14 years, defined the silhouette as light. “It is completely deconstructed,” he said backstage after the preview show Sunday, the second day of Milan Fashion Week. It is a deconstruction that doesn’t seek to challenge the sartorial rules, but rather reinforce them. As if to emphasize the fluidity of the look, the color that unites the collection is an aqueous blue-green, which matches soothingly with earthier tones
of rust, gray, brown and beige. The collection centers on sportswear, with a variety of jackets including longer overcoats, double-breasted jackets that are slightly cropped, blousons with gathered waists that function as a bomber jacket and, inventively, blazers that are belted from the inside or outside. The outfits are finished with double-pleated trousers or loose-fitting Bermudas. Emphasizing the casual nature of the collection, scarves are favored over ties. For the traveler, Giornetti designed large totes in waxed suede with leather accents on the corners and handles. Shoes, Ferragamo’s calling card, are sturdy sandals and lace-ups with solid soles and thick fringe.

MILAN — Milan designers are gently inviting men to add just a little derring-do to their dressing. Feel secure in that double-breasted blazer? Why not snazz it up with a pair of silken shorts and thick-soled sneakers? Like the classic black and white, or red-white-and-blue combinations? Ok, but let’s brighten things up sometimes with color — purple, aqua blue, salmon pink. It was a big regroup during the four days of fashion previews for next summer’s menswear that ended Tuesday. Miuccia Prada warned it was not the time for craziness and Giorgio Armani discussed the need of fashion to be “serious” and not pull consumers’ legs with outlandishly styled shirts that create a fashion media stir and cost 350 euros (nearly $500) a pop. Designers seemed united in their desire to simplify things — returning to lines as a graphic form, adding stripes, gingham and checks to menswear but foregoing, for the most part, florals and ethnic prints. The silhouette was relaxed and easy to wear, with jackets worn open and crew-necks or inventive tops favored over the traditional white or blue shirts. Trousers were roomy, pleated and often cuffed, but also straight and cropped. The preferred short was the Bermuda. Ties were replaced by foulards knotted snuggly on the neck or scarves tucked inside coats. There was little denim — except on the Prada runway where there was almost nothing else. Distressed garments got a new life, as if to honor a man’s self-conscious nature about dressing well.

Kebo Iwa finally got an answer from God and told village dwellers to held “Tipat Bantal” war in front of Dalem Gelgel every year during the 4th full moon. Bali to build more long toll roads Antara
DENPASAR - The Bali provincial administration plans to build more toll roads between Denpasar and other district capitals in the tourist island. Bali already has a long toll bridge extending over the sea coast between the tourist beach area of Nusa Dua and the regency of Badung. Similar projects of flyovers will be built between Denpasar and Gilimanuk in western coast of Bali and between Denpasar and Singaraja in the northern coast, Bali’s deputy Governor I Ketut Sudikerta said on Thursday. Sudikerta said the project is still in the pipeline, adding the provincial administration is still studying the plan including investment for the mega projects. Flyovers linking Denpasar and the western and northern parts of the province are getting urgent to cope with the traffic congestion, he said. The highway between Denpasar and Singaraja in the north has too many bends that it could take four hours to cover the distance especially with the traffic jams, he said. With the flyover the distance could be covered in a much shorter time, he added. Flyover is the only solution the growing worse traffic jams in the highways and to cut short the distance, he said. He said construction is expected to start in 2016/2017 and to be completed in one or two years. Flyover between Denpasar and Gilimanuk via the regencies of Tabanan and Jembrana and between Denpasar and Singaraja via the regencies of Tabanan and Buleleng would help boost economic development in the district areas and all Bali, he said.

“Through the staging of the art, we expect the role of community from the bottom level can be more active in drug eradication and HIV/AIDS prevention,” said the headman of Dangin Puri Kangin, I Gusti Ngurah Putrawan. KUTA - Hard Rock Hotel Bali proudly announced the winner of Ms. Hard Rock Bali 2014, Ms. Olivia Febrina Birchfield, 18 year old Hard Rocker from Bali, Indonesia. Ms. Birchfield has always been among the top contenders since the 1st Preliminary, but her performance on Final Night convinced the judges and wowed the crowd. Final Night was held on Friday, June 20 at Centerstage, attended by more than 200 supporters, fans, guests and invitees. During the Final Night, finalists competed in fashion shows, talent showcase and final questions. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Her party also questioned why the geothermal power plant (PLTPB) project at Bedugul emerged again. Actually, the project has been rejected by the Bali House. “We are very dear to the nature of Bali, especially Bedugul area. So, there is no longer the continuation of geothermal project,” she stated. She hoped the geothermal project at Bedugul not to be tampered with as it had been finally rejected
by the Bali House. Her party worried, if the project would be continued it surely kindled new polemic, especially in Tabanan. Aside from rejecting the continuation of geothermal project, Regent Eka also disagreed to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. She said the reclamation would have an impact on the opening of the opportunities for mass urbanization, not to mention the issue of environmental damages. “Likewise, I reject the reclamation. It will have an impact on the environment of Bali. Do not let the reclamation plan trigger new issues. Bali should be sustainable,” she said.
