At the weekend, the official “Avatar” Facebook page posted a photo of director James Cameron with a production team beneath a caption reading: “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. “The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!” Speaking to Reuters at the London premiere of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” on Monday night, Saldana welcomed the announcement. “I’m happy that it’s finally here because...I don’t want to get too old and shoot it because I won’t be able to do my stunts,” the 38-year-old actress, who played Neytiri, said. “If I haven’t warmed up, I can’t do a stunt to save my life.” Set in 2154 on the magical moon Pandora and offering plenty of visual effects, “Avatar”, which also starred Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver, took in some $2.8 billion at box offices worldwide, smashing records. ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ gets May 2019 release date: Disney LOS ANGELES - The final film in the new “Star Wars” trilogy, “Star Wars: Episode IX,” will be released in May 2019, movie studio Walt Disney Co said on Tuesday. The May 24 release date marked a shift in strategy for Disney, whose two previous new entries in the sci-fi adventure have all been set for release in mid-December, during the winter holidays. Disney gave no details on “Star Wars: Episode IX,” about which little is known except that it will be directed by Colin Trevorrow. “Episode IX” completes the trilogy that began after Disney bought George Lucas’s Lucasfilm in a $4 billion deal in 2012. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which reunited the original cast of the first 1977 film, was released in December 2015, and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is due to open worldwide on Dec. 15, 2017. Disney on Tuesday also announced that another of its blockbuster franchise revivals, a new Indiana Jones movie starring Harrison Ford, had been pushed back by a year to July 2020. ‘Robbery of the century’: 8 arrested in neighboring Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO/ASUNCION - Brazilian federal police on Tuesday arrested eight people suspected of killing a police officer and blowing up a building while robbing a security company of millions of dollars in a volatile border town in Paraguay. Three suspects were killed in a shoot-out after the movie-like heist in the contraband hub of Ciudad del Este on Monday. Mangrove forest in Bali

Ngurah Rai grand forest park most threatened

DENPASAR - The existence of people-fenced mangrove forests in Bali is not separable from disruption, whether in the form of forest area encroachment, land conversion or pollution. The disruptions are mainly seen in the forest area of Ngurah Rai grand forest park (Tahura). Moreover, the entire mangrove forests owned by the island are dominantly located in the region.

“Indeed, in general they suffer some disruptions, especially those in Ngurah Rai grand forest park. Meanwhile, in other districts such as Klungkung, Jembrana and Buleleng district the forest has slightly more secure position,” said the Head of the Bali Forestry Agency, I Gede Nyoman Wiranatha, in Denpasar, recently. Wiranatha acknowledged that humans are very strong to suppress the mangrove forests in grand forest park. Mainly they are in the form of encroachment, land conversion and pollution due to garbage or other chemical residues carried by rivers leading into the Ngurah Rai grand forest park. Though having been curbed, the encroachment still occurs and the number increases sharply. “The obstacle is the encroachment committed by surrounding community. Frankly speaking, the forest is fenced by people. Well, the forest condition depends on the behavior of the community. Indeed, dissemination, appeal and invitation have been frequently carried out, but it then depends on human behavior at the surrounding areas,” he explained. Based on the record of forest agency in 2015, there are only 16 certificates in the forest spreading across in the area of 3,340 hectares. However, it has now increased to 54 certificates that overlap with forest area of 19,853 square meters per September 2016. “Indeed, we have gradually handled them with legal process against all the violations and activities in the Ngurah Rai grand forest park that are not in accordance with the existing

provisions. They are reported or handled in cooperation with the Bali police if they do not pay attention to the warnings given,” he explained. When it comes to garbage and pollution, continued Wiranatha, the forest agency makes coordination with the Bali environment agency and Bali public works and housing agency. The handling is done thoroughly from the upstream area considering there are three major rivers that empty into the Ngurah Rai grand forest park. In addition to related agencies in the province, the issue is also coordinated with related agencies in Badung district and Denpasar municipality. “Probably, each government has programmed the future handling,” he said. The data owned by Bali forestry agency indicate that mangrove forest area in Bali covers an area of 2,071.49 hectares, while outside the forest area amounts to 890.4 hectares. The mangrove forest within the forest area spreads over the area

of Ngurah Rai grand forest park covering 1,373.5 hectares, Nusa Lembongan protected forest (202 hectares), Budeng production forest (66.99 hectares) and West Bali National Park forest area (429 hectares). On average the condition of mangrove is good, except in Ngurah Rai grand forest park having critical condition of approximately 10 percent. The agency classifies four problems occurred in the Ngurah Rai grand forest park. The first is forest security disruption in the form of encroachment of forest area spreading from Sanur Kauh to Tanjung Benoa and certification of forest area. Secondly, it is pollution in the area due to garbage disposal, waste of concrete, residue of shipyard (fiber glass), chicken industry waste, and waste disposal of fish processing factory. The third is overlapping forest area with PT. Pelindo III (Persero); and then, forest destruction happens because in the area there are waters being difficult for mangrove to grow. (kmb32)

If the airport is built, investors will come. The initiator of the toll road will come and so will other investors”, explained this Democratic Party politician. Member of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Suyasa, said that the lacation determination permit for the airport project in Buleleng urgently needs to be issued by the Ministry of

Transportation given that the Givernment of Bali and the GIvernment of Buleleng have already permits for the project. There is already a plan to hold a ground breaking ceremony of August 28, 2017, he added. “In essence, Commission III very much supports the realization of this project as soon as possible. We will seek to find out what may be lacking. We do no defend any particular investor, but simply the most rational among them”, said Chairman of the Gerindra Faction in the Bali House of Representatives. As previously reported, there are two investors who have conducted initial studies related to the construction of an airport in Buleleng: PT Pembangunan Bali Mandiri and Airports Kinesis from Canada. Can playground design help reduce bullying?

WELLINGTON - Playgrounds designed with risk-taking in mind may mean more pushing and shoving during recess, but they also might make kids less likely to feel bullied, a small experiment in New Zealand suggests.

For the study, researchers randomly selected eight elementary schools to get modified playgrounds with lots of loose and moving parts, chances to socialize and build things, and opportunities to play with bikes and skateboards. A control group of eight schools kept their traditional playgrounds. After two years, children at the schools with modified playgrounds were about 33 percent more likely to report pushing and shoving during recess than kids at schools with traditional playgrounds, researchers report in Pediatrics. With modified playgrounds, however, kids were 31 percent less likely to report bullying to teachers. “To us, the findings that intervention children reported more pushing and shoving yet were less likely to tell a teacher were fascinating,” said senior study author Rachael Taylor of the University of Otago in New Zealand. The study doesn’t shed light on why this happened, so it’s hard to say whether kids got better at resolving disputes on their own or perhaps became more resilient to behavior that might have felt like bullying before, Taylor said by email. Researchers assessed all of the existing playgrounds at the 16 primary schools included in the study, then made changes to half of the spaces to encourage more risk-taking and challenges.

Along with modified physical spaces to play, the study also encouraged schools with altered playgrounds to change rules for recess to allow things like tree climbing, rough-and-tumble play and going outside even on rainy days. A total of 840 kids started the study, and 630 of them remained after two years. Children ranged in age from 6 to 9 years old. With modified playgrounds, kids were 66 percent more likely to report playing with a lot of children after one year, and after two years they were also 64 percent more likely to report being happy at school. After one year, parents of kids who had modified playgrounds were almost twice as likely to say kids had happy relationships with other students. But after two years, the reverse was true. Teachers didn’t report differences in name-calling or cruel teasing based on whether playgrounds were altered for the study. But teachers did report more physical bullying and deliberate exclusion with modified playgrounds. The main limitation of the study is that bullying is difficult to assess, the authors note. In addition, the study was too small to detect meaningful differences between girls and boys and had too few teachers to draw many conclusions from what educators observed. Even so, the results suggest it may make sense to move from play areas that are more structured to spaces that offer an element of risk and fewer rules, said Sarah Clark, co-director of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. (rtr)

While many doctors already monitor blood pressure throughout pregnancy, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) updated its guidelines for the first time since 1996 to stress that screening at every visit can help doctors catch and treat preeclampsia before it escalates from a mild problem to a life-threatening one. “Preeclampsia is one of the most serious health problems affecting pregnant women,” task force member Dr. Maureen Phipps, a women’s health researcher at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, said by email. “Because this condition is common and critical, the Task Force offers two separate recommendations to help women lower the risk associated with preeclampsia - screening for preeclampsia is recommended for all pregnant women, and women at high risk of developing the condition can take low-dose aspirin to help prevent it,” Phipps added by email. The screening recommendations, published on Tuesday in JAMA, apply to women without a history of preeclampsia or high blood pressure. Separate guidelines advise low-dose aspirin after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy for women with a history of elevated blood pressure. nancy can show normal results for women who go on to develop preeclampsia. In addition to elevated blood pressure, women with preeclampsia may also have excess amounts of protein in their urine, as well as swelling in the feet, legs and hands. Women may suffer from stroke, seizures, organ failure and in rare cases, death. For babies, complications include slower growth inside the uterus, low birth weight and death. Risks for preeclampsia include a history of obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as a mother or sister who has experienced the condition. Because the risks of preeclampsia increase with age, women may be able to lower their chances of developing this complication by having babies sooner, said Dr. Dana Gossett, an obstetrics and gynecology researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, and co-author of an accompanying editorial in JAMA. “Beyond that, it is also important to ensure that all health problems are well managed prior to pregnancy,” Gossett said by email. “High blood pressure should be under good control, other diseases like kidney disease or lupus should be well controlled, and women should try to be close to their ideal body weight prior to conception.” Checking blood pressure at every prenatal visit can help prevent complications for mothers and babies alike, said Dr. Martha Gulati, chief of cardiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix and author of a separate editorial in JAMA Cardiology. ONE of the old and rare arts that remains hidden in Jembrana is known as berko. This bamboobased gamelan instrument that adopts the gong of East Bali, experienced its heyday in 1925-1935. As with the other more famous arts from Jembrana like Jegog and Makepung, the emergence of this art is intimately tied to the agrarian culture of this region. This berko art that combines bamboo gamelan and dance had dissapeared after the Japanese occupation and only reemmerged some 20 years ago. This art was first developed in the neighborhood of Dewasana, Pendem village, Jembrana, and was re-constructed in the 1990s during the leadership of Jembrana Regent, Ida Bagus Indugosa. Berko speaks to the simplicity of agrarain society and its closeness to nature. This bamboo gamelan is made from raw materials that used to be easy to find in the area. Berko enthusiast I Wayan Dibia, explained that this unique art form emmerged and flourished in Dewasana Mundukjati, a few years after local senior members of the community had cleared the forest to make room for land cultivation. One of the elders, Pan Muder, spent his spae time siting in his hut making a simple gamelan from bamboo using the durmo scale. Together with his friends, the gamelan was then perfected with the addition of undir on the back, cymbals, drums and flutes. At first glance, it looks like a gong, but it is entirely made of bamboo and the sounds are rather discordant or bero (Balinese). This strange sound is what gave this art form its name: Berko.

At first Berko was often played in the fields at night under danyuh (dried coconut leaves) lantern. Later frying pans were filled with oil and a small wick served as th source of light for these night time sessions. Today, these frying pan lanterns are still used during Berko performances. The popularity of berko made its way to the ears of the royal family who invited the troop to perfor. From there the gamelan music started to become accompanied by dancers ressembling the legong and joged bumbung. Each staging consists of two sessions. Firstly, it is known as introductory dance and tributes to the audience and guests named Byar Cebok. It is followed by the second part containing a social dance or known as Byar Gem. Two female dancers appeared in male character. The dance features the storyline of Ramayana with Subali and Sugriwa characters. Before the stage begins, the dancers make an introduction accompanied with gamelan music. Indeed this art had disappeared during the period of physical revolution. Today, this art can still be found at Pancadawa neighborhood, Pendem village. Later on, this art remains to develop at Pendem as reactivated by the Jembrana culture and tourism agency. The agency provides space for the berko artists to perform this art. Head of the Jembrana Culture and Tourism Agency, I Nengah Alit, said that his agency deliberately reconstructs the arts that are almost never performed. A number of cultural and natural potentials at the villages are further explored including at Pendem. (olo)

Some craftsmen not understand on importance of IPR

GIANYAR - Some craftsmen have not understood about the importance of registering their intellectual property. In Gianyar district, there are only 42 craftsmen having owned the certificate of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and 89 others have registered to get such a certificate.

This was revealed by Section Head of IPR Facilitation at the Gianyar Industry and Commerce Agency, Henny Sudamaeni Raharjo, in the IPR dissemination to craftsmen in the handicraft exhibition in a series of the Gianyar anniversary on Tuesday (Apr. 25). Related to the shortage of awareness among the artisans, the government of Gianyar through the industry and commerce agency continuously disseminates the IPR to crafters. Henny stated that in the dissemination the district government stresses the importance of IPR as an effort to protect the intellectual property of the artisans. She added that some IPR registrations such as the right of brand and industrial design are free of charge. This is enabled because it has received facilitation from the ministry of industry. Meanwhile, the copyright registration will be charged. In the meantime, Division Head of Legal Services at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of Bali Province, Sutirah, explained that her side also keeps trying

to give understanding to crafters on the importance of protecting intellectual property including brand rights, copyright, industrial design and patent right. Sutirah explained that there are differences between each part of the IPR. Brand right is the acknowledgment of the work for the mark in the form of shape, names, words, letters, numbers, arrangement of colors or combinations of these elements having differentiation and used in the trade activities of goods or services. Subsequently, copyright is the exclusive right of the creator arising automatically on the basis of a declarative principle after the creation is manifested in its tangible form without prejudice to restrictions in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations. The right of industrial design is a creation of shape, configuration or composition of lines or colors, or lines and colors, or a combination of them in the form of three-dimension or two-dimension giving the aesthetic impression and can be realized in a threedimensional or two-dimensional pattern and can be used to make a product, goods, industrial commodity or handicraft. “Meanwhile, the patent right is an exclusive right granted by the state to the inventor for the invention in the field of technology which for a certain time carries out its own invention or give its consent to other parties to implement it,” she added. Unique ritual in a series of Usaba Dangsil

Marriage before this ritual over, boys and girls must do maserah

AMLAPURA - Implementation of Usaba Dangsil at Bungaya village, Bebandem, retains many unique stories. Ahead of the ritual at the ancient villages in Karangasem ends, there remains a series of unique rituals rarely found in other villages of Bali. In addition to the Usaba Nindih ritual denoting the closing of a series of Usaba Dangsil ritual, there is also peserah or meserah ritual. Uniquely, this ritual is especially devoted to married men and women before the implementation of Usaba Dangsil is completely finished. This peserah ritual is held two days after Usaba Nindih at Bale Pekenca Temple. This was held at the Bale Agung on Sunday (Apr. 23). One of the boys of Bungaya, Agus Sudarsana, said that it has been a tradition from the past, where 12 days after penyineban ritual of Usaba Gede or Usaba Dangsil, men and women that have got married before the Usaba Dangsil ends, they are obliged to perform mepamit (farewell) ritual at Bale Agung Temple and perform peserah (handover) ritual to all boys and girls. The process of peserah ritual is witnessed by senior figures of Bungaya customary village, namely We Kebayan Wayan, We Kebayan Nyoman, chief of customary village and the secretary and all boys and girls in the community of Bungaya customary village. This year, the peserah ritual at the courtyard of the Bale Agung is implemented by two boys and girls. They are I Kadek Ari Setiawan (boy) from Kecicang Bali hamlet, husband of Ni Komang Apriani from Peselatan Merita village, Abang. The ritual committee said that after the Usaba Nindih, the series of Usaba Dangsil has completed this year. All the dangsil paraphernalia at Penataran Temple are directly dismantled. U.S. moves THAAD anti-missile to S.Korean site, sparking protests

SEOUL - The U.S. military started moving parts of its controversial THAAD anti-missile defence system to a deployment site in South Korea on Wednesday amid high tensions over North Korea’s missile and nuclear programmes. The earlier-than-expected move prompted protests by hundreds of local residents and was denounced by the frontrunner in South Korea’s presidential election on May 9. A spokesman for Moon Jae-in said the decision “ignored public opinion and due process” and demanded the deployment be suspended until the next administration was in place and had made its policy decision. The United States and South Korea last year agreed to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to counter the threat of missile launches by North Korea. However the move has angered China, which says the advanced system will do little to deter the North while destabilizing the regional security balance. South Korea’s defence ministry said some elements of THAAD were moved to the site on what had been a golf course in the south of the country. “South Korea and the United States have been working to secure an early operational capability of the THAAD system in response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile threat,” the ministry said in a statement. The battery is expected to be operational by the end of the year, it added. Television footage showed military trailers carrying large units

Germany raises 2017 growth forecast to 1.5 percent BERLIN — The German government slightly raised its growth forecast this year for the country’s economy, Europe’s biggest, to 1.5 percent on Wednesday. It predicted that the economy will expand by 1.6 percent in 2018. The government had forecast in January that gross domestic product would grow by 1.4 percent this year following last year’s 1.9 percent expansion. This year’s growth is expected to be lower because more public holidays fall on weekdays. The government’s panel of independent economic advisers last month forecast growth of 1.4 percent this year and 1.6 percent in 2018. Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries said that “international risks are affecting the German economy relatively little” since domestic demand has strengthened over recent years, with Germans now somewhat more willing to spend. Uncertainty remains over the consequences of Britain’s exit from the European Union and “the economic policy course in the U.S. has not yet finally been determined,” Zypries said. “A lot of our companies still don’t know exactly what is coming.” President Donald Trump has promised to release the outlines of his tax plans Wednesday. It is unclear whether he favors a border adjustment tax system, which would lower corporate rates to 20 percent by essentially taxing imports and excluding U.S. exports. “We assume, and also have signals from the United States, that the border adjustment tax probably won’t come,” Zypries said, though she stressed that officials won’t know more until Trump speaks.(ap)

Two reasons why Italians are turning sour on the euro

LONDON - The euro zone’s greatest existential threat may no longer centre on small, peripheral countries such as Greece and Portugal dragging it down, but instead on the prospect that its third largest economy, Italy, could abandon ship. Two recent economic reports show what the euro has meant to Italians and why polls suggest they are no longer keen. One suggests they are poorer as a result of being part of the currency bloc, the other that they are falling further behind their counterparts in main trading partner Germany. It is a distant risk to the currency bloc that Italy will actually walk away, but not beyond imagination Italy’s 5-Star movement, which wants to dump the euro through a referendum, has been surging in opinion polls recently, getting as much as a third of the vote in a March Corriere Della Sera poll. The anti-European Union Northern League got another 12 or so percent - and there are others. But actually leaving the euro zone would come down to whether Italian voters believe 15 years or so of the currency had been good or bad for them. The recent analyses suggest it has been the latter. Italy, however, sank to 96 from 110. That puts Italy closer to emerging economies like the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia that it does to Germany. France was pretty much unchanged at 106. This means that simply in terms of what they can buy, Italians are poorer that they were in 2004, a few years after they swapped the lira. YOUR EURO, MY EURO Second are some findings this month from research group World Economics that suggest Italy’s problems from its currency linkage with Germany are increasing. Germany

has become much more competitive as a member of the euro zone. By comparison, Italy has not. World Economics takes a basket of representative goods and services in U.S. dollars and compares it in purchasing power terms with the cost in other currencies. The result is its World Price Index (WPI). For the euro zone, the index allows for counter-intuitive comparisons between member countries - essentially creating German euros, French euros, Italian euros and so on. Over the past two years, the “Italian euro” has gone from being 3 percent overvalued to 4 percent undervalued in the WPI, effectively a better position vis-àvis the dollar. But the difference between it and the “German euro” has widened by two percentage points as the latter has become 14 percent

undervalued. This means Italian businesses exporting to Germany, their top destination, are facing worse conditions than previously. It also make German imports cheaper and therefore more competitive domestically. World Economics points to other euro zone countries that have a worse problem -- France and Greece, for example - but suggests that Italy is a new fault line for the euro zone. “Italy looks like becoming the next ‘domino’ to suffer from the strength of the German economy as trends ... have become much more pronounced over the past 12 months,” it said in a note. None of this may be caused by the euro per se, or be enough to outweigh the benefits of pooling a currency and the protection that can bring. But added to other factors - annual GDP growth struggling to reach 1 percent, for example, or declining capital investment in business and infrastructure - they do go some way towards explaining why fewer Italians tell pollsters the euro is a good thing.(rtr)

Sangging, a Person Officiating in Tooth Filling Ritual

One of the obligatory ceremonies to be implemented by the Hindus in Bali is mapandes or tooth filing ceremony. The ceremony is conducted by a sangging or tooth filer symbolically chiseling the four upper incisors and two canines. Then, it is resumed with filing the teeth by using a saw filer, so that they become flat and neat. Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, said that sangging is person who has certain ability in the ceremony, such as making the offerings, bade tower, shrine building, sculpture, painting and others. People having the profession as sangging have already owned the skills. “To become a sangging, people have to go through a pawintenan or initiation rite according to the level of ceremony performed,” he said. A sangging is not only good at making the works, but also able to perform initiation rite (spiritually animate the work). Sangging is not only able to officiate over physically (sekala), but also psychically (niskala). “Sangging has to be able to chant mantra so that a sangging should have undergone a pawintenan at its spiritual teacher,” he said. Temple priest and high priest usually also serve as sangging. In certain case, the sangging can also be assisted in the process of ceremony. At first, he consecrates the chisel, filer and gem with the meaning that the tooth to be filed will become brilliant. The palmleaf manuscripts used as reference for this tooth-filing ceremony are

the Tatwa Kala, Kala Puja Pati, Semaradahana and Tutur Sanghyang Yama. Lately, there is an official becoming a sangging. It is okay provided that it has undergone the initiation rite for the profession. Otherwise, it can only watch the procession because the ritual must be accompanied with mantra to be chanted. Without mantra, the procession will be the same as filing teeth at beauty salon or dental clinic. “Although the people are not high priests, they can also become a sangging as long as they have taken the initiation rite for the profession first,” he said. It is different from the case of tooth filing for dead people. The sangging will be assigned to its biological mother. This provision is carried in the Proktah palm-leaf manuscript. The tool used to file the teeth is rice knife commonly used in earlier times. Otherwise, it can be replaced with lotus flower as the rice knife seems to be difficult to find. “Sangging having not undergone the initiation rite is believed to bring in an effect on the next descent,” he explained. He said that Hindu communities in Bali always organizes tooth filing ceremony for their sons and

daughters after growing adult. This ceremony aims to control the influence of Shadripu (six enemies) in the children because their desire will give more opportunities to be teased. When this happens, it will infiltrate and have negative impact on their behavior. On that account, they are purified by tooth filing rite whose implementation comes with a set of offerings symbolizing the teeth. In the filing ritual for the six teeth, the ends symbolize Adharma (untruth) that are then filed to make them flat symbolizing dharma. By doing so, dharma remains to control of the life of children having undergone the ritual. Tooth filing is a ritual with the meaning to discover the true nature of human and release from the shackles of darkness or Shadripu effect in humans. Shadripu poses six enemies arising from the nature of bad deeds in human, namely Kama (lust), Lobha (greed), Krodha (anger), Mada (arrogance), Moha (attachment) and Matsarya (jealousy). People can undergo the tooth filing ceremony when they physically have entered adolescent period. In girls, it can be done after getting the first menstruation and in boys after experiencing voice changes. This ritual is meant to remove impurities in the form of kala, bhuta, pisacas and raksasa in the sense that the body and soul are overwhelmed by the Shadripu nature so as to find true nature of human. Each year ahead of the Nyepi (Day of Silence) celebration, there will a different atmosphere, especially at Kediri customary village, Tabanan. In other regions, ahead of the celebration may be graced with the making and parade of ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) or bamboo cannon, but Kediri precisely holds cultural event in the form of Tektekan. It is named the Tektekan Kediri-Nangluk Merana. This event will take place for eleven days starting from March 17 through March 27, 2017 or on the Pengerupukan Day. The annual event will be packaged in a parade. Moreover, on March 25 and 26 this special event will be held in front of the Desa and Puseh Temple of Kediri customary village. In the meantime, the road closure will take place on March 27, 2017 where the route will reach the Kediri roundabout. Chief of Kediri customary village, AAG Ngurah Panji Wisnu, explained that during the eleven days, the entire customary villagers of Kediri ranging from children to adults will go around the village while playing the sounds from a variety of sources. They are ranging from kulkul (bamboo split drum), gong or okokan (large cow bell). Some have even been modified with the accompaniment of bleganjur. “In total, there are seven hamlets at Kediri customary village that will take turns to go round from one hamlet to another hamlet existing is at our village,” he explained. Further, he said that tektekan tradition in the area of Kediri customary

village is inherited from generation to generation. So far, there is no any record on the history of its origin. According to his ancestors, the tradition came together with the outbreaks in Kediri. “At that time, many residents were experiencing sickness to death and they also faced harvest failure because their paddy fields were attacked by pests,” he said. Due to concerns over the calamity occurred at that time, community leaders and temple priests agreed to invoke guidance by praying at local Puseh Temple. At that time, they got a clue if the pandemic could be eliminated by means of sounds. Armed with this clue, the residents of Kediri came down and went around the village while playing tektekan for few days. Finally, it was proved that the plague attacking the customary village disappeared. Since then, the tektekan tradition has psychical function to dismiss plague. Its implementation cannot be predicted because it depends on the incidence of outbreak at the village. With the changing of time or more precisely from 2014 the tektekan tradition began to be transformed into an entertainment art. Moreover, local villagers agreed to hold this tradition as annual attraction coinciding with the Hindus celebrating Nyepi. During the execution of tektekan tradition at local customary village, the officials suggest road users to find alternative road section. “We’ve made coordination with police authority, especially on the security and traffic diversion,” he concluded. Netanyahu snubs German minister over plan to meet rights groups

BERLIN - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled talks on Tuesday with Germany’s visiting foreign minister, snubbing Sigmar Gabriel over his decision to meet groups critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The dispute threatened to widen a rift between Israel and Germany over the Palestinian issue. Berlin has been increasingly critical of the settlement policies of Netanyahu’s right-wing government in occupied territory Palestinians seek for a state. “My policy is clear: Not to meet with diplomats who visit Israel and engage with organisations that slander Israeli soldiers and seek to have them put on trial as war criminals,” Netanyahu said in Jerusalem late on Tuesday. He said he was leading Israel “through proud nationalist polices and not by bowing our heads and grovelling”. But he emphasised that relations with Germany would remain strong and important. Gabriel told reporters the decision was “not nice” and caught him by surprise since he generally had an open relationship with Netanyahu, but added that it did not spell “the end of diplomatic ties between the two countries”. “I regret it greatly. And, I’ll say it openly, we cannot become a political football for Israeli domestic politics,” he said. “But it’s not a catastrophe. There will be another occasion to meet somewhere ... We have to let things cool off.” On Monday, an Israeli official had said Netanyahu, who is also foreign minister, would not see Gabriel if he went ahead with meeting the Israeli group “Breaking the Silence”.

The organisation, a frequent target of criticism by the Israeli government, collects testimony from Israeli veterans about the military’s treatment of Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. ANKARA - Turkey will not wait at Europe’s door forever and is ready to walk away from EU accession talks if rising Islamophobia and hostility from some member states persist, President Tayyip Erdogan told Reuters in a wideranging interview on Tuesday. Speaking at the presidential palace less than two weeks after winning sweeping new powers in a referendum, a relaxed Erdogan said a decision by a leading European human rights body to put Turkey back on a watch list was “entirely political” and that Ankara did not recognise the move. The Strasbourg-based Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said it put Turkey back on review over its crackdown on dissent since last year’s coup attempt, rights violations, and concerns about Erdogan’s increased grip on power. Turkey’s relations with the EU soured further ahead of the referendum, when he accused Germany and the Netherlands of acting like Nazis by banning rallies by his supporters. “In Europe, things have become very serious in terms of the extent of Islamophobia. The EU is closing its doors on Turkey and Turkey isn’t closing its doors on anybody,” Erdogan said, showing photos of vandalised mosques and supporters of the outlawed Kurdish militants rallying against him in Europe. “If they’re not acting sincerely we have to find a way out. Why should we wait any longer? We’re talking about 54 years,” he said,

WASHINGTON - Indonesia will not need to repeat last year’s major spending cut as the government’s revenue projections look “on track” amid strengthening growth, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati told Reuters. Indrawati said in an interview on Monday that the government would reallocate some spending within the budget to more “productive” areas that can support growth, such as land acquisition for infrastructure projects.

The former World Bank managing director also insisted that Indonesia’s international banking environment was not becoming more difficult, despite a recent row over a negative JP Morgan research report. One of Indrawati’s first acts when she returned to Jakarta as finance minister in July 2016 was to slash state spending by $10.2 billion to hold Indonesia’s deficit within a 3 percent legal limit. “We are not going to cut. The president is asking to reallocate more, focusing on the spending which is productive,” Indrawati said of this year’s budget, after the International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring meetings in Washington. She said revenue projections appear “on track” as the World Bank projects Indonesia’s economic growth at 5.2 percent this year, compared to the government’s official 5.1 percent forecast used for budget planning, and 5.0 percent last year. “If there is going to be a change in the revenue it will be because of the commodity prices, like oil. We are assuming $45 a barrel, maybe it’s going to be an average of $50,” she said. Indonesian crude grade prices ranged from $46.65 a barrel to $50.80 a barrel on Monday. Benchmark U.S. light crude traded at $49.49. Indrawati said the government needed to boost infrastructure spending this year for some specific projects, such as hosting the Asian Games in 2018, but added, “The overall top line is not going to change.” Interest rates are another variable that could have an effect on revenues, depending on how far and fast the U.S. Federal Reserve raises rates this year, which could affect growth, capital flows and the value of the rupiah. Indrawati said Indonesia was much better positioned to handle Fed rate hikes than during the “taper tantrum” of 2013, when funds flowed out of emerging markets as the Fed signaled it would scale back its bond-buying efforts. Indrawati said this time around, the Fed’s intentions have been well-telegraphed, and confidence in Indonesia’s growth prospects, its growing middle class and its reform efforts are also stronger. “As long as this movement of the interest rates is being viewed by the market as a sign of strength of the U.S. economy, I think there will be less possibility of volatility,” she said. Following the growth of religious tension in the recent election of the governor of Jakarta, Indrawati said it was “not necessarily the correct projection” to assume similar issues for 2019 national elections, and added that it would have no effect on President Joko Widodo’s reform program. “This is still a healthy democracy, it’s a good result of democracy. SOCHI - Formula One is set to abandon plans for a ‘halo’ head protection system in favour of a transparent screen that could be introduced for 2018. The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced the development following a meeting of the sport’s core Strategy Group in Paris on Tuesday ahead of this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix. “A number of more integrated solutions for additional frontal protection have been studied, and the decision has been taken to give priority to the transparent ‘shield’ family of systems,” it said in a statement. “The FIA aims to carry out track tests of this system during this season in preparation for implementation in 2018.” The ‘halo’ cockpit protection device, which is fixed at three points

including a central pillar in front of the driver that supports a protective loop above his head, was extensively tested last season with a mixed response. The FIA said in January the net safety benefit had been established but a decision needed to be made about the aesthetics and whether such a system was right for Formula One. Cockpit protection has become a priority since the deaths of drivers in other series after being hit by wheels and flying debris. The shield, a see-through screen in front of the driver that does not cover the cockpit, was tested in practice for

this year’s Chinese Grand Prix. Decisions made at the Strategy Group have to be approved by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council, which is usually a formality. One of soccer’s greatest players and most influential and visionary coaches, Cruyff died just over a year ago after a five-month battle with lung cancer. He was 68. “By naming the stadium after him we believe we have made a worthy tribute,” said the statement. “He was an Amsterdamer who was known all over the world for his contribution to football as a player, a coach and philanthropist through his foundation.
