Angelina Jolie rips world powers on Syria’s refugee crisis UNITED NATIONS — Actress Angelina Jolie pleaded with world powers Friday to help the millions of Syrian refugees, sharply criticizing the U.N. Security Council for being paralyzed by its division over Syria’s four-year conflict. Jolie briefed the council as special envoy for the U.N. on refugee issues. Syria’s ambassador said simply of her presence, “She’s beautiful.” Jolie spoke during a full day of briefings on Syria that also included details of a new series of talks next month in Geneva aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis. The U.N. humanitarian chief made a powerful call for sanctions against those blocking the delivery of aid. Nearly 4 million Syrians have fled the conflict into neighboring countries, which warn they are dangerously overstretched. “We cannot look at Syria, and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision, and think this is not the lowest point in the world’s inability to protect and defend the innocent,” Jolie said. Jolie, who said she has made 11 visits to Syrian refugees in the region since the crisis began in 2011, called strongly for the political will to act. She said the council’s powers lie unused because its members cannot agree on how to address the conflict. Russia, a top Syria ally and backed by China, has vetoed multiple council resolutions on Syria, including an effort last year to refer the situation there to the International Criminal Court. British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, in his final council meeting, urged his colleagues to try again and said his “greatest regret” in his post was their collective failure to end the conflict. Jolie said she would like to see the foreign minister of each of the 15 council members come to the table to negotiate a political solution. She also urged council members to visit Syrian refugees and see the crisis for
themselves. In addition, Jolie spoke briefly about the rising migrant crisis on the Mediterranean, where more than 1,300 migrants fleeing Syria and other places have drowned at sea over the past three weeks. (ap)

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — When a group of Native American actors walked off the set of an Adam Sandler movie this week, their decision generated praise and scorn on social media. But everyone agreed on one thing: Despite growing awareness, outdated Native American stereotypes in Hollywood remain. And more Native Americans are voicing their opinions. This week, eight actors quit the production of the satirical Western “The Ridiculous Six” over complaints about offensive names and religious scenes. The actors said they couldn’t participate in a movie depicting a Native American woman urinating while smoking a peace pipe. California writer Megan Red ShirtShaw, founder of Natives in America, an online publication for Native American youth, said the walkout generated praise from American Indian advocates because people were tired of the images and now have outlets to
express their outrage. “In the past, Native actors did speak out but they didn’t have the technology to share their views widely,” Red Shirt-Shaw said. “It’s different now.” On social media, activists used the hashtag #NotYourHollywoodIndian to denounce Sandler’s project and to thank the actors for their “bravery.” Meanwhile, other Native Americans say more actors and writers are needed in media to battle hurtful images. They argued the actors should have stayed on set. The Sandler film is set for a Netflix-only release, and the streaming service says it was designed to lampoon stereotypes popularized in Western movies. GIANYAR - During its heyday, the performance of arja operetta becomes an icon on piodalan or temple birthday in Bali. This performance has even penetrated foreign countries, especially Europe. However, it begins to fade or is even almost never seen. Fortunately, the government of Gianyar is still trying to pack a variety of old performing arts to prevent them from extinction. Wayan Latri, an artist of arja operetta from Kramas village, said that in the 1980s the Singapadu and Kramas village were the center of arja operetta artists. During its heyday, the arja performance was always favorite not only Bali, but even in European continent such as France, the Netherlands and Germany where people flocked to watch the arja operetta. “Overseas, the committee disseminates a leaflet on the synopsis of storyline in local language before performance. There is also official introducing the crews and explaining the storyline by cutting the story plot in each session,” she explained. However, the current performance of the arja begins to decrease and the artists even begin to disappear. In addition, the lack of education for regeneration becomes the cause of the disappearance of the arja artists. Another cause of the decline is the development of technology such as television because viewers can easily watch the show repeatedly. “As a result, the live arja performance is only watched by few spectators and can be
counted on the fingers. However, in some places people are still hungering for the arja entertainment,” she said. To prevent the arja performance from extinction, Wayan Latri took proactive action such as by submitting herself to pay devotional work (ngaturang ayah). “When there is a temple festival, we can submit to the committee for making a performance, but it can only be done around here. But, for outside this village we maybe think twice to do it, considering the cost of transport and equipment is not cheap,” she said. The Head of Gianyar Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, admitted if staging of the arja art begins to be increasingly rare. According to him, it happens because the play is considered less attractive by society. “Spectators decline. Probably, they consider it less attractive or they have been saturated. In the past, it was even so iconic in temple festivals or other grandiose temple rituals,” he explained. Nevertheless, he is still trying to revive various rare arts in Gianyar like the topeng panca and gambuh, including the arja operetta. But he wants to pack the performing art in order to become more attractive. He cited the prembon that is currently liked best by society, namely in the form of fragmentary show by combining the elements of drama and arja operetta. “It should be packed in contemporary style. If it remains monotonous as the old style, it may be extinct, but we do not want this to happen,” he said. (kmb35)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

For Dubai biz travelers, Ngurah Rai Airport soak up the sun and souq ranked world’s 7th best
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — If you’re visiting Dubai for a long stopover or business trip, make sure to leave a little space in your bag for a bathing suit, flip-flops and souvenirs. For business travelers with just a few hours or half-day to spare in the emirate, head to the Dubai Mall. There pick up a cold drink or frozen yogurt and head outside to watch one of the world’s most beautiful dancing fountains and be mesmerized by base views of the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa. If you feel like getting some exercise in, skip the hotel gym and head out for a run or brisk walk by Kite Beach, where a safe 3-mile-long (5-kilometer) track runs along the coast. Don’t forget to stop and take a selfie on the beach with the sea and Dubai’s iconic sail-shaped Burj al-Arab hotel behind you.
For spinning enthusiasts, head to Fly Dubai where there’s no membership cost. finds at boutiques like Sauce — a homegrown chain of edgy concept stores in Dubai. The hotels along The Walk are home to some of Dubai’s best restaurants, but meals there don’t come cheap. “The Ngurah Rai Airprt is the pride of the Balinese community and is now ranked as the 7th best airport in the world,” Sikado said on Saturday. He noted that the ratings has been released by the Airport Council International (ACI), and based on the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey during the October to December 2014 period. “Based on a survey conducted by the Airport Council International, Ngurah Rai is the world’s seventh best airport in the category of 15 to 25 million passengers per year,” he remarked. Sikado confirmed that as one of the busiest airports in Indonesia, the Ngurah Rai Airport, was ranked above the Kansai Airport in Osaka, Japan; the San Diego Airport in California, United States; the Surich Airport in Swiss, Switzerland; the Brisbane Airport in Queensland, Australia; and the Manchester Airport in England. The bamboo wares include; standalone cupboards, chairs, towel racks, shoe racks, tables, ladders as well as home decor. The bamboo craft shop is owned by Edo. Edo’s brother-in-law Muhammad Imam, who manages the bamboo handicraft shop, explained to Bali Post on Sunday that they use golden bamboo also known as chinese bamboo. This bamboo is obtained from the slopes of the mountains of East, West and Central Java. “This kind of bamboo can only grow in certain areas,” he said. The bamboo goes through a three part process before being crafted into different objects. First it is smoked to get rid of insects,
then it is heated to straighten it out and finally it is sanded down to remove sharp protrusions. Imam himself has made handicraft products as samples for bamboo handicraft lovers. The various bamboo crafts can be ordered according to customers’ desired style, design and size. The bamboo poles are perforated to allow for the different pieces to fit together and form the shape of the different objects: “we cut, and drill the bamboo a certain way depending on what we are making, then we glue the pieces together using ‘Fox’ glue and a special adhesive fluid,” explained Imam. Philippines urges ASEAN to stop China in South China Sea
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Philippines on Sunday urged its fellow Southeast Asian countries to take immediate steps to halt land reclamation by China in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, warning that failure to do so will see Beijing take “de facto control” of the area. Malaysia’s foreign minister, however, said that the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations will avoid confrontation with China and continue negotiations with Beijing on a binding code of conduct that would govern behavior in the area. Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario told a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers that if China’s construction of artificial islands on reefs claimed by other countries is allowed to be completed, Beijing will impose its claim over more than 85 percent of the sea. Rosario urged the grouping to “stand up” to China by urging it to halt its reclamation work, which threatened to militarize the region, infringe on rights of other states and damage the marine environment. He warned that China, which has been dragging its foot on ASEAN’s push for a code of conduct, will aim to complete its reclamation activities before it agrees to conclude the code. If this happens, he said the code will legitimize China’s reclamation. “The threats posed by these massive reclamations are real and cannot be ignored or denied,” he said. “ASEAN should assert its leadership, centrality and solidarity. ASEAN must show the world that it has the resolve to act in the
common interest.” China, Taiwan and ASEAN members Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei have overlapping claims in the South China Sea, which includes busy sea lanes and rich fishing grounds, and is believed to have large undersea deposits of oil and natural gas. ASEAN has maintained a cautious stand in the dispute to avoid angering China, a key trading partner. Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman told reporters that ASEAN is “very much concerned” about the reclamation, but that sending an ultimatum to China to stop work could backfire and hurt peace and stability in the region. “It will be much appreciated if China can stop work and sit down with ASEAN countries to find a solution,” he said. “ASEAN must send the right signal and make the right move. We must avoid any measures that are counterproductive either to ourselves or to China.” Officials from ASEAN nations and China are scheduled to meet in May and June to discuss the issue, he said. The Philippines filed a case with an international arbitration tribunal in 2013 challenging China’s claim. Beijing has defended the reclamation, saying it is Chinese territory and the structures are for public service use and to support Chinese fishermen. WASHINGTON — A presidential election just getting into gear provided U.S. President Barack Obama plenty of new material to work with on the night he describes as Washington celebrating itself. “It’s amazing how time flies,” Obama told those attending the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association on Saturday night. “Soon, the first presidential contest will take place, and I for one cannot wait to see who the Koch brothers pick. It’s exciting.” Obama added: “Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker ... who will finally get that red rose?” On the Democratic side, Obama observed that Hillary Rodham Clinton kicked things off by going unrecognized to Chipotle. Meanwhile, he said, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley went completely unrecognized at an O’Malley campaign event. Taking a playful poke at himself and at Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is considering a bid, Obama said: “Apparently, some folks want to see a pot-smoking socialist in the White House. We could get a third Obama term after all.” The dinner also gave the president an opportunity to rib some of his loudest critics. “Just this week Michele Bachmann actually predicted that I would bring about the biblical end of days. Now, that’s a legacy,” he
said. “That’s big. I mean, Lincoln, Washington, they didn’t do that.” The correspondents’ dinner brings in some big names from Hollywood. enforcement agency that could get in trouble if a black man gets shot. “Your hair is so white now,” she told the president, “it can talk back to police.” And she had the journalists repeat after her and solemnly swear they will not talk about Hillary Rodham Clinton’s appearance “because that is not journalism.” Few of the politicians who may want to succeed Obama showed up for the dinner. One on hand was Donald Trump, who again has been teasing Republicans about running for national office. Most of the prospective and declared Republican candidates stayed away. ASEAN, EU to seek jump-start of free-trade talks
The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the EU had launched negotiations in 2007, but broke them off in 2009 amid disagreements largely centering on European concerns over ASEAN member Myanmar’s human rights record. “Senior officials of ASEAN and EU will meet towards the end of the
year to take stock and explore the way forward and report back to the ministers,” the two sides said in a joint statement. The statement was released in Malaysia following discussions between delegations on the sidelines of ASEAN’s annual diplomatic gathering, hosted this year by ASEAN chair Malaysia.
“The EU is committed to have a region-to-region free-trade agreement,” European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told reporters after the talks. “But it is important that we get it right and that is why we proposed this roadmap, a stock-taking event by the end of the year.” The EU is already holding sepa-

RIGA, Latvia - European ministers heaped pressure on Greece Friday to speed up negotiations to unblock critically needed bailout funds and avert a dangerous default, showing frustration after months of bogged down talks. The eurozone’s 19 finance ministers ended a meeting in Riga without a breakthrough to unlock 7.2 billion euros ($7.8 billion) in bailout cash, with the threat of a messy exit by Greece from the euro still hanging in the balance. “It was a very critical discussion,” said Eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem after the talks ended, with eurozone ministers angry at the lack of progress as a hefty payment of 200 million euros to the IMF stands due on May 1. “There remain big, big problems to be solved for Greece,” he said. Athens is fast running out of money to pay its creditors and carry out everyday government duties, raising the risk of a default as a long series of huge loan repayments to the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank approach. On Friday, Greece’s parliament adopted a controversial decree ordering all public institutions to hand over their cash reserves to the central bank to help Athens pay civil servants’ wages and service its debt. But increasingly irate eurozone ministers have refused to release any cash without a comprehensive list of reforms that the hard-left Syriza government has so far refused to accept. Greece’s Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said the talks in Riga were heated but pointed the finger to mixed messages from his European partners, all while adding that a deal was within reach. “The cost of not finding an agree-

Varoufakis dismissed the idea, arguing the Greek people would interpret it as a return of the dreaded ‘troika’ of auditors that oversaw the bailout programme before the radical leftists took power. “The notion that we go back to the troika is simply groundless,” he said. Greece’s radical-left Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras swept to power in January on a promise to break with austerity demanded by its EU-IMF creditors. Defying his paymasters, Tsipras pushed welfare laws through parliament last month and has continued to refuse measures agreed by the previous government. So, our agreement with the DCK and PT Adhi Karya as contractor is clear,” said Eka Merthawan on Sunday. Marthawan explained that said that the cutting down of the trees could not be avoided because the pipeline excavation project is needed in order to provide clean water to South Kuta where many communities, including those
living in the Bukit area, still face water shortages. “This project aims to overcome the issue of clean water shortages. So we though that sacrificing shade giving trees, was a worthwhile exchange for the benefits that people will be able to enjoy,” he said. Furthermore, he explained that his party has stipulated strict requirements before the trees were cleared, such as that only the very minimum possible number of trees should be cut down, that they should be replaced with golden trumpet tress, that traffic should not be disturbed and that once the tress were cut cut, that they should not be disposed of carelessly. “All the requirements have been met, so for us there is no problem,” he stated.
Methawan emphasized that the the sacrifice of these tress was made for the sole purpose of being able to provide clean water to these communities. “So, it is reasonable and once the project is completed, the beautiful appearance of this part of Badung will be returned to the condition that it was in before the project began. All the cleared trees must be replaced by planting new trees,” he said. As of three days ago, up to 90 had been cut down but said Merthawan: “probably, this number will increase due to technical issues in the field,” he said. Malaysia detains 12 suspected of Islamic State group links KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian police have detained 12 men suspected of being linked to the Islamic State group and who are believed to be plotting attacks on strategic government targets in the country. were believed to be responding to calls by Islamic State group leaders in Syria to attack secular Islamic countries. First survivors of Mount Everest avalanche reach Kathmandu
KATHMANDU — The first group of survivors from an earthquake-triggered avalanche that swept through the Mount Everest base camp were flown to Nepal’s capital on Sunday and taken to hospitals. None appeared to have life-threatening injuries. At least 17 people were killed when Saturday’s avalanche, set off by a massive earthquake, obliterated part of the rocky village of nylon tents, where dozens of teams were training and acclimatizing themselves to higher altitudes as they prepared to make summit attempts in the next few weeks. Twenty-two of the most seriously injured had already been taken by helicopter for treatment in the village of Pheriche, the location of the nearest medical facility. But bad weather and communications were hampering more helicopter flights, said Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Later Sunday, a plane carrying 15 injured people arrived in the capital, Kathmandu, from Lukla, home of the closest airport to Mount Everest. Officials refused to provide details on their conditions, but most appeared to have broken bones or other treatable injuries. Of those evacuated, 12 were Nepalese Sherpas. There was also one person each from China, South Korea and Japan. The Sherpa survivors said
they feared that many more people could be dead on Everest. Pemba Sherpa, a 43-year-old guide with the right side of his face bandaged, was surprised he had survived. He rushed from his tent when the earthquake hit Saturday and was standing in the open when “I heard a big noise, and the next thing I know I was swept away by the snow,” he said. “I must have been swept almost 200 meters (yards).” Later, he regained consciousness. “I was in a tent surrounded by some foreigners. George Foulsham, a Singapore-based marine biologist, described the moment that the disaster struck. “I was outside, saw a white 50-storey building of white come at me. I ran and it just flattened me,” he told AFP. “I tried to get up and it flattened me again. I couldn’t breathe, I thought I was dead. When I finally stood up, I couldn’t believe it passed me over and I was almost untouched. “I saved for years to climb Everest. It feels like the mountain is saying it’s not meant to be climbed for now. INDONESIA Indonesia gives 72-hour executions notice
JAKARTA — Indonesia notified nine foreigners and a local man convicted of drug trafficking that their executions will be carried out within days, ignoring appeals by the U.N. chief and foreign leaders to spare them. Authorities also asked the four Nigerian men, two Australian men, a Filipino woman, and one man each from Brazil, France and Indonesia for their last wish, the spokesman for the attorney general, Tony Spontana, said Sunday. He said the legal options of nine of them have been exhausted, while Frenchman Serge Atlaoui still has an outstanding legal complaint over the procedure followed in his request for clemency. Spontana said he expects the Supreme Court to rule on it Monday. The 72-hour notice indicates the executions by firing squad in Besi prison on Nusakambangan Island will be carried out at the earliest on Tuesday or Wednesday. The pending executions have caused an international outcry, particularly in Australia, France and the Philippines, which are opposed to the death penalty. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to “urgently consider declaring a moratorium on capital punishment in Indonesia, with a view toward abolition.” French President Francois Hollande has warned of diplomatic consequences if Atlaoui is executed,

Serge Atlaoui is among 10 foreigners slated for execution in the coming days in Indonesia. His case has drawn national attention in France, which vigorously opposes the death penalty. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said Saturday the government is intensifying its mobilization and is determined to prevent the execution. Scores of people gathered in Paris and Atlaoui’s hometown of Metz on Saturday to urge Indonesia to halt his execution, some shouting “Hope! Hope!” Atlaoui’s fate may be on hold because of a legal complaint over the procedure followed in his request for clemency. The French ambassador was not summoned to a meeting with Indonesian authorities Saturday for formal notification of the execution, unlike consular officials from other countries. A lawyer for Atlaoui,

MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has undergone surgery after injuring his left hand in a training crash on Saturday. Marquez had an accident while riding on a dirt track and fractured his little finger. He was operated on by regular MotoGP surgeon Dr Xavier Mir at Barcelona’s Quiron Dexeus University hospital and had a titanium plate fitted. The next MotoGP round is just a week away, as the European season starts with the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. Dr Mir said: “The patient presented a deformity to the little finger of his left hand and

MANCHESTER — Fernandinho volleyed in an 89th-minute winner as Manchester City survived throwing away a two-goal lead to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and cement a place in the English Premier League’s top four for the soon-to-be-deposed champions. Sergio Aguero pounced on an early mistake by goalkeeper Brad Guzan to give City a third-minute lead, and Aleksandar Kolarov made it 2-0 in the 66th when he curled a free kick through the defensive wall. Villa looked like salvaging a point after goals by Tom Cleverley and Carlos Sanchez — following misjudgments by goalie Joe Hart — pulled the relegation strugglers level by the 85th. There was still time for a City corner to drift through a crowded penalty box to Fernandinho, who chested the ball down before finding the net from eight meters. “It’s important to continue with the spirit like today,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “It’s not easy to go from 2-0 to 2-2. With this spirit, maybe we don’t lose another game.” City moved provisionally to second place — above Arsenal and Manchester United, who both play on Sunday — and more importantly was nine points clear of Liverpool and Tottenham in the chase for the Champions League qualification places. MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has undergone surgery after injuring his left hand in a training crash on Saturday. Marquez had an accident while riding on a dirt track and fractured his little finger. He was operated on by regular MotoGP surgeon Dr Xavier Mir at Barcelona’s Quiron Dexeus University hospital and had a titanium plate fitted. The next MotoGP round is just a week away, as the European season starts with the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. Dr Mir said: “The patient presented a deformity to the little finger of his left hand and
a subsequent x-ray showed a fracture of the proximal phalanx, with displacement. “Therefore, we decided to treat the injury - as we would in the case of any other patient by fixing a titanium plate to his finger. “This will allow us to initiate functional recovery after 24 hours and give him a chance of racing at Jerez.” Marquez is currently only fifth in the MotoGP standings following a collision with championship leader Valentino Rossi as they battled for the lead in the last round in Argentina.

First survivors of Mount Everest avalanche reach Kathmandu
KATHMANDU — The first group of survivors from an earthquake-triggered avalanche that swept through the Mount Everest base camp were flown to Nepal’s capital on Sunday and taken to hospitals. None appeared to have life-threatening injuries. At least 17 people were killed when Saturday’s avalanche, set off by a massive earthquake, obliterated part of the rocky village of nylon tents, where dozens of teams were training and acclimatizing themselves to higher altitudes as they prepared to make summit attempts in the next few weeks. Twenty-two of the most seriously injured had already been taken by helicopter for treatment in the village of Pheriche, the location of the nearest medical facility. But bad weather and communications were hampering more helicopter flights, said Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Later Sunday, a plane carrying 15 injured people arrived in the capital, Kathmandu, from Lukla, home of the closest airport to Mount Everest. Officials refused to provide details on their conditions, but most appeared to have broken bones or other treatable injuries. Of those evacuated, 12 were Nepalese Sherpas. There was also one person each from China, South Korea and Japan. The Sherpa survivors said
they feared that many more people could be dead on Everest. Pemba Sherpa, a 43-year-old guide with the right side of his face bandaged, was surprised he had survived. He rushed from his tent when the earthquake hit Saturday and was standing in the open when “I heard a big noise, and the next thing I know I was swept away by the snow,” he said. “I must have been swept almost 200 meters (yards).” Later, he regained consciousness. “I was in a tent surrounded by some foreigners. I did not know what happened or where I was,” he said after being taken to Kathmandu Medical College Hospital. For generations, thousands of ethnic Sherpas, many of whom also use “Sherpa” as a surname, have made their livings working on mountaineering expeditions as guides, porters or cooks. Saturday’s magnitude-7.8 quake struck at around noon, just over a year after the deadliest avalanche on record hit Everest, killing 16 Sherpa guides on April 18, 2014. Witnesses said the avalanche began on Mount Kumori, a 7,000-
meter (22,966-foot) -high mountain just a few kilometers (miles) from Everest, gathering strength as it headed toward base camp and the lower reaches of Everest. Numerous climbers may now be cut off on routes leading to the top of the world’s highest peak. Bhim Bahadur Khatri, 35, another survivor flown to Kathmandu, said he was cooking in a meal tent when the quake struck. “We all rushed out to the open and the next moment a huge wall of snow just piled on me,” he said in a brief airport interview before being driven to a nearby hospital. “I managed to dig out of what could easily have been my grave. I wiggled and used my claws to dig as much as I could. I was suffocating, I could not breathe. But I knew I had to survive.” When he finally dug his way out, gulping in fresh air, he was surrounded by devastation. George Foulsham, a Singapore-based marine biologist, described the moment that the disaster struck. “I was outside, saw a white 50-storey building of white come at me. I ran and it just flattened me,” he told AFP. “I tried to get up and it flattened me again. I couldn’t breathe, I thought I was dead. When I finally stood up, I couldn’t believe it passed me over and I was almost untouched. “I saved for years to climb Everest. It feels like the mountain is saying it’s not meant to be climbed for now. JAKARTA — Indonesia notified nine foreigners and a local man convicted of drug trafficking that their executions will be carried out within days, ignoring appeals by the U.N. chief and foreign leaders to spare them. Authorities also asked the four Nigerian men, two Australian men, a Filipino woman, and one man each from Brazil, France and Indonesia for their last wish, the spokesman for the attorney general, Tony Spontana, said Sunday. He said the legal options of nine of them have been exhausted, while Frenchman Serge Atlaoui still has an outstanding legal complaint over the procedure followed in his request for clemency. Spontana said he expects the Supreme Court to rule on it Monday. The 72-hour notice indicates the executions by firing squad in Besi prison on Nusakambangan Island will be carried out at the earliest on Tuesday or Wednesday. The pending executions have caused an international outcry, particularly in Australia, France and the Philippines, which are opposed to the death penalty. U.N. PARIS — France is stepping up efforts to save the life a Frenchman facing a firing squad in Indonesia on drug charges, amid signs that his execution may be suspended. Serge Atlaoui is among 10 foreigners slated for execution in the coming days in Indonesia. His case has drawn national attention in France, which vigorously opposes the death penalty. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said Saturday the government is intensifying its mobilization and is determined to prevent the execution. Scores of people gathered in Paris and Atlaoui’s hometown of Metz on Saturday to urge Indonesia to halt his execution, some shouting “Hope! Hope!” Atlaoui’s fate may be on hold because of a legal complaint over the procedure followed in his request for clemency. The French ambassador was not summoned to a meeting with Indonesian authorities Saturday for formal notification of the execution, unlike consular officials from other countries. A lawyer for Atlaoui,

ASEAN, EU to seek jump-start of free-trade talks
The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the EU had launched negotiations in 2007, but broke them off in 2009 amid disagreements largely centering on European concerns over ASEAN member Myanmar’s human rights record. “Senior officials of ASEAN and EU will meet towards the end of the
year to take stock and explore the way forward and report back to the ministers,” the two sides said in a joint statement. The statement was released in Malaysia following discussions between delegations on the sidelines of ASEAN’s annual diplomatic gathering, hosted this year by ASEAN chair Malaysia.
“The EU is committed to have a region-to-region free-trade agreement,” European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told reporters after the talks. “But it is important that we get it right and that is why we proposed this roadmap, a stock-taking event by the end of the year.” The EU is already holding sepa-

The eurozone’s 19 finance ministers ended a meeting in Riga without a breakthrough to unlock 7.2 billion euros ($7.8 billion) in bailout cash, with the threat of a messy exit by Greece from the euro still hanging in the balance. “It was a very critical discussion,” said Eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem after the talks ended, with eurozone ministers angry at the lack of progress as a hefty payment of 200 million euros to the IMF stands due on May 1. “There remain big, big problems to be solved for Greece,” he said. Athens is fast running out of money to pay its creditors and carry out everyday government duties, raising the risk of a default as a long series of huge loan repayments to the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank approach. On Friday, Greece’s parliament adopted a controversial decree ordering all public institutions to hand over their cash reserves to the central bank to help Athens pay civil servants’ wages and service its debt. But increasingly irate eurozone ministers have refused to release any cash without a comprehensive list of reforms that the hard-left Syriza government has so far refused to accept. So we though that sacrificing shade giving trees, was a worthwhile exchange for the benefits that people will be able to enjoy,” he said. Furthermore, he explained that his party has stipulated strict requirements before the trees were cleared, such as that only the very minimum possible number of trees should be cut down, that they should be replaced with golden trumpet tress, that traffic should not be disturbed and that once the tress were cut cut, that they should not be disposed of carelessly. “All the requirements have been met, so for us there is no problem,” he stated.
Methawan emphasized that the the sacrifice of these tress was made for the sole purpose of being able to provide clean water to these communities. “So, it is reasonable and once the project is completed, the beautiful appearance of this part of Badung will be returned to the condition that it was in before the project began. All the cleared trees must be replaced by planting new trees,” he said. As of three days ago, up to 90 had been cut down but said Merthawan: “probably, this number will increase due to technical issues in the field,” he said. Philippines urges ASEAN to stop China in South China Sea
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Philippines on Sunday urged its fellow Southeast Asian countries to take immediate steps to halt land reclamation by China in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, warning that failure to do so will see Beijing take “de facto control” of the area. Malaysia’s foreign minister, however, said that the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations will avoid confrontation with China and continue negotiations with Beijing on a binding code of conduct that would govern behavior in the area. Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario told a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers that if China’s construction of artificial islands on reefs claimed by other countries is allowed to be completed, Beijing will impose its claim over more than 85 percent of the sea. Rosario urged the grouping to “stand up” to China by urging it to halt its reclamation work, which threatened to militarize the region, infringe on rights of other states and damage the marine environment. He warned that China, which has been dragging its foot on ASEAN’s push for a code of conduct, will aim to complete its reclamation activities before it agrees to conclude the code. If this happens, he said the code will legitimize China’s reclamation. “The threats posed by these massive reclamations are real and cannot be ignored or denied,” he said. “ASEAN should assert its leadership, centrality and solidarity. ASEAN must show the world that it has the resolve to act in the
common interest.” China, Taiwan and ASEAN members Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei have overlapping claims in the South China Sea, which includes busy sea lanes and rich fishing grounds, and is believed to have large undersea deposits of oil and natural gas. ASEAN has maintained a cautious stand in the dispute to avoid angering China, a key trading partner. Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman told reporters that ASEAN is “very much concerned” about the reclamation, but that sending an ultimatum to China to stop work could backfire and hurt peace and stability in the region. “It will be much appreciated if China can stop work and sit down with ASEAN countries to find a solution,” he said. “ASEAN must send the right signal and make the right move. We must avoid any measures that are counterproductive either to ourselves or to China.” Officials from ASEAN nations and China are scheduled to meet in May and June to discuss the issue, he said. The Philippines filed a case with an international arbitration tribunal in 2013 challenging China’s claim. Beijing has defended the reclamation, saying it is Chinese territory and the structures are for public service use and to support Chinese fishermen. Anifah has said that ASEAN leaders are expected to raise concerns over Chinese land reclamation at their two-day summit starting Monday and will seek to speed up plans for the code of conduct with China. WASHINGTON — A presidential election just getting into gear provided U.S. President Barack Obama plenty of new material to work with on the night he describes as Washington celebrating itself. “It’s amazing how time flies,” Obama told those attending the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association on Saturday night. “Soon, the first presidential contest will take place, and I for one cannot wait to see who the Koch brothers pick. It’s exciting.” Obama added: “Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker ... who will finally get that red rose?” On the Democratic side, Obama observed that Hillary Rodham Clinton kicked things off by going unrecognized to Chipotle. Meanwhile, he said, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley went completely unrecognized at an O’Malley campaign event. Taking a playful poke at himself and at Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is considering a bid, Obama said: “Apparently, some folks want to see a pot-smoking socialist in the White House. We could get a third Obama term after all.” The dinner also gave the president an opportunity to rib some of his loudest critics. “Just this week Michele Bachmann actually predicted that I would bring about the biblical end of days. Now, that’s a legacy,” he
said. “That’s big. I mean, Lincoln, Washington, they didn’t do that.” The correspondents’ dinner brings in some big names from Hollywood. For example, she observed that the Secret Service is the one law
enforcement agency that could get in trouble if a black man gets shot. “Your hair is so white now,” she told the president, “it can talk back to police.” And she had the journalists repeat after her and solemnly swear they will not talk about Hillary Rodham Clinton’s appearance “because that is not journalism.” Few of the politicians who may want to succeed Obama showed up for the dinner. One on hand was Donald Trump, who again has been teasing Republicans about running for national office. Most of the prospective and declared Republican candidates stayed away. For Dubai biz travelers, Ngurah Rai Airport soak up the sun and souq ranked world’s 7th best
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — If you’re visiting Dubai for a long stopover or business trip, make sure to leave a little space in your bag for a bathing suit, flip-flops and souvenirs. For business travelers with just a few hours or half-day to spare in the emirate, head to the Dubai Mall. There pick up a cold drink or frozen yogurt and head outside to watch one of the world’s most beautiful dancing fountains and be mesmerized by base views of the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa. If you feel like getting some exercise in, skip the hotel gym and head out for a run or brisk walk by Kite Beach, where a safe 3-mile-long (5-kilometer) track runs along the coast. Don’t forget to stop and take a selfie on the beach with the sea and Dubai’s iconic sail-shaped Burj al-Arab hotel behind you.

finds at boutiques like Sauce — a homegrown chain of edgy concept stores in Dubai. The hotels along The Walk are home to some of Dubai’s best restaurants, but meals there don’t come cheap. DENPASAR - The glitzy Ngurah Rai International Airport on the Indonesian island resort of Bali, which is known for its grandiose construction, had been ranked the seventh best airport globally, its General Manager, Herry A.Y Sikado, said.
“The Ngurah Rai Airprt is the pride of the Balinese community and is now ranked as the 7th best airport in the world,” Sikado said on Saturday. He noted that the ratings has been released by the Airport Council International (ACI), and based on the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey during the October to December 2014 period. “Based on a survey conducted by the Airport Council International, Ngurah Rai is the world’s seventh best airport in the category of 15 to 25 million passengers per year,” he remarked. Sikado confirmed that as one of the busiest airports in Indonesia, the Ngurah Rai Airport, was ranked above the Kansai Airport in Osaka, Japan; the San Diego Airport in California, United States; the Surich Airport in Swiss, Switzerland; the Brisbane Airport in Queensland, Australia; and the Manchester Airport in England. Meanwhile, the best ranked airport in the ASQ survey was the Wuhan Tianhe Airport in China. Bamboo crafts with a touch of traditional art DENPASAR - When going along Jalan Gunung Soputan, our eyes will be drawn to various bamboo craft products on display at Axel Art and Craft shop which seeps onto the side of the road along with other such shops. The bamboo wares include; standalone cupboards, chairs, towel racks, shoe racks, tables, ladders as well as home decor. The bamboo craft shop is owned by Edo. Edo’s brother-in-law Muhammad Imam, who manages the bamboo handicraft shop, explained to Bali Post on Sunday that they use golden bamboo also known as chinese bamboo. This bamboo is obtained from the slopes of the mountains of East, West and Central Java. “This kind of bamboo can only grow in certain areas,” he said. The bamboo goes through a three part process before being crafted into different objects. First it is smoked to get rid of insects,
then it is heated to straighten it out and finally it is sanded down to remove sharp protrusions. Imam himself has made handicraft products as samples for bamboo handicraft lovers. The various bamboo crafts can be ordered according to customers’ desired style, design and size. The bamboo poles are perforated to allow for the different pieces to fit together and form the shape of the different objects: “we cut, and drill the bamboo a certain way depending on what we are making, then we glue the pieces together using ‘Fox’ glue and a special adhesive fluid,” explained Imam. Both glues are used to ensure maximum strength. The largest bamboo poles used here are 3.5 cm in diameter which can be mixed and matched with smaller poles. Imam said that Axel Arts and Crafts have been exported to the
UK, Brazil and Australia and recently took an order for 500 ladders to be sent to England. Ladders, and other products like shoe racks are in demand by foreign markets. “To work on the orders, we require at least two months because the heating process takes a long time,” he said. In Bali, bamboo handicrafts are mostly ordered by hotels and villas. “They mostly order towel racks,” he added. According to Imam, the process of making bamboo crafts is somewhat tricky because the heating process used to straighten the bamboo poles must be done carefully, “otherwise, the bamboo will crack,” he said. The process of making a round chairs must also be done carefully and requires accuracy when bending the bamboo poles into a circle after they have been heated to the right temperature. “These chars take the most time to make out
of all our crafts -namely 5 to 7 days,” he said. The store currently employs 6 other craftsmen: “five people are placed in Java, and one in Bali,” he said. To handle the smaller craft orders between 1 and 9 pieces for example, we can handle it here in Bali, but for more than 10 pieces, we have them made in Java where “we can produce hundreds of handicrafts at a time” he said. People can also buy raw materials from the shop on japan Gunung Soputan for making crafts in Ubud. Axel Art and craft shop uses approximately 3,000-4,000 bamboo poles per month to make the handicrafts and his average turnover is valued at IDR 40-50 million. Prices of the handicrafts range from IDR 125,000 to IDR 1.7 million. “The most expensive product is our stand alone cupboard” he said. (kmb42)

GIANYAR - During its heyday, the performance of arja operetta becomes an icon on piodalan or temple birthday in Bali. This performance has even penetrated foreign countries, especially Europe. However, it begins to fade or is even almost never seen. Fortunately, the government of Gianyar is still trying to pack a variety of old performing arts to prevent them from extinction. Wayan Latri, an artist of arja operetta from Kramas village, said that in the 1980s the Singapadu and Kramas village were the center of arja operetta artists. During its heyday, the arja performance was always favorite not only Bali, but even in European continent such as France, the Netherlands and Germany where people flocked to watch the arja operetta. “Overseas, the committee disseminates a leaflet on the synopsis of storyline in local language before performance. There is also official introducing the crews and explaining the storyline by cutting the story plot in each session,” she explained. However, the current performance of the arja begins to decrease and the artists even begin to disappear. In addition, the lack of education for regeneration becomes the cause of the disappearance of the arja artists. Another cause of the decline is the development of technology such as television because viewers can easily watch the show repeatedly. “As a result, the live arja performance is only watched by few spectators and can be
counted on the fingers. However, in some places people are still hungering for the arja entertainment,” she said. To prevent the arja performance from extinction, Wayan Latri took proactive action such as by submitting herself to pay devotional work (ngaturang ayah). “When there is a temple festival, we can submit to the committee for making a performance, but it can only be done around here. But, for outside this village we maybe think twice to do it, considering the cost of transport and equipment is not cheap,” she said. The Head of Gianyar Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, admitted if staging of the arja art begins to be increasingly rare. According to him, it happens because the play is considered less attractive by society. “Spectators decline. Probably, they consider it less attractive or they have been saturated. In the past, it was even so iconic in temple festivals or other grandiose temple rituals,” he explained. Nevertheless, he is still trying to revive various rare arts in Gianyar like the topeng panca and gambuh, including the arja operetta. But he wants to pack the performing art in order to become more attractive. He cited the prembon that is currently liked best by society, namely in the form of fragmentary show by combining the elements of drama and arja operetta. “It should be packed in contemporary style. If it remains monotonous as the old style, it may be extinct, but we do not want this to happen,” he said. (kmb35)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Angelina Jolie rips world powers on Syria’s refugee crisis
UNITED NATIONS — Actress Angelina Jolie pleaded with world powers Friday to help the millions of Syrian refugees, sharply criticizing the U.N. Security Council for being paralyzed by its division over Syria’s four-year conflict. Jolie briefed the council as special envoy for the U.N. on refugee issues. Syria’s ambassador said simply of her presence, “She’s beautiful.” Jolie spoke during a full day of briefings on Syria that also included details of a new series of talks next month in Geneva aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis. The U.N. humanitarian chief made a powerful call for sanctions against those blocking the delivery of aid. Nearly 4 million Syrians have fled the conflict into neighboring countries, which warn they are dangerously overstretched. “We cannot look at Syria, and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision, and think this is not the lowest point in the world’s inability to protect and defend the innocent,” Jolie said. Jolie, who said she has made 11 visits to Syrian refugees in the region since the crisis began in 2011, called strongly for the political will to act. She said the council’s powers lie unused because its members cannot agree on how to address the conflict. Russia, a top Syria ally and backed by China, has vetoed multiple council resolutions on Syria, including an effort last year to refer the situation there to the International Criminal Court. British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, in his final council meeting, urged his colleagues to try again and said his “greatest regret” in his post was their collective failure to end the conflict. Jolie said she would like to see the foreign minister of each of the 15 council members come to the table to negotiate a political solution. She also urged council members to visit Syrian refugees and see the crisis for

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — When a group of Native American actors walked off the set of an Adam Sandler movie this week, their decision generated praise and scorn on social media. But everyone agreed on one thing: Despite growing awareness, outdated Native American stereotypes in Hollywood remain. And more Native Americans are voicing their opinions. This week, eight actors quit the production of the satirical Western “The Ridiculous Six” over complaints about offensive names and religious scenes. The actors said they couldn’t participate in a movie depicting a Native American woman urinating while smoking a peace pipe. California writer Megan Red ShirtShaw, founder of Natives in America, an online publication for Native American youth, said the walkout generated praise from American Indian advocates because people were tired of the images and now have outlets to
express their outrage. “In the past, Native actors did speak out but they didn’t have the technology to share their views widely,” Red Shirt-Shaw said. “It’s different now.” On social media, activists used the hashtag #NotYourHollywoodIndian to denounce Sandler’s project and to thank the actors for their “bravery.” Meanwhile, other Native Americans say more actors and writers are needed in media to battle hurtful images. They argued the actors should have stayed on set. The Sandler film is set for a Netflix-only release, and the streaming service says it was designed to lampoon stereotypes popularized in Western movies.
