Thousands of clove trees topple Singaraja (Bali Post)—
Clove farmers at several villages in Buleleng are ascertained to suffer great losses in this year’s harvest season. This happens because thousands of their productive clove trees toppled as hit by high winds and heavy rains a few weeks ago. at all. When contacted separately, the Division Head of Plantation Services Nyoman Partayasa, with permission from the Head of Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency Komang Gede Yasa, said that after strong winds and heavy rains his party had received some reports on the falling clove trees from the extension field officers (PPL). From
the temporary report, the most falling clove trees happened at Umajero village, Busungbiu subdistrict (1,241) and they were all productive trees. Those clove trees belonged to 29 farmers. Similarly, the incident also occurred at Bengkel village, Busungbiu subdistrict where 52 clove trees toppled and they were ensured to face crop failure. Other falling clove trees also came about at Galungan village, Sawan subdistrict where 100 trees toppled, while at Pegayaman and Pegadungan village, Sukasada subdistrict, was recorded a total of 1,000 falling clove trees. “Based on temporary data, the falling clove trees or breaking branches reached more than 2,000 trees and our staff is still collecting the data,” he said. According to Komang Gede Yasa, so far there was no handling for the farmers suffering crop losses due to the falling clove trees. Nevertheless, the Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency would attempt to provide seedling assistance to alleviate the losses of farmers. “Having collected the data on the losses, we are trying to provide them with seedling assistance. Hopefully, the seedling assistance could slightly alleviate the losses of farmers,” he said. (kmb)

As soon as arriving on a beautiful hilly area exuding a strong spiritual vibration, precisely in the southwest of Kutuh customary village, Dang Hyang Nirartha along with his entourage took a short break to unwind. The arrival of maharishi was welcomed enthusiastically by the local community. They took the opportunity to meet him in person and ask religious directions and guidance. He was also willing to help people by putting up the stick of his umbrella. Due to spiritual power he possessed, a holy water suddenly spurted from the location where the stick of the umbrella was stuck. The water source is known as kubung suci by local communities and located in the innermost courtyard of the Gunung Payung Temple functioned as a holy headspring. Before leaving the village to resume his pilgrimage, Dang Hyang Nirartha provided advice to local people to always keep the amrita water coming out from where he stuck the umbrella handle. Padangbai Harbor, Karangasem, was still replete with trucks in queue reaching the T-junction of Padangbai because they were waiting for ferry service to Lembar. Meanwhile, the Chief of Padangbai Harbor Police (KP3), Dewa Ketut Nila Candra, with permission of the Karangasem Police Chief, Jefri Torunde, Sunday (Mar 25) said that on Pengerupukan and Nyepi of the Caka New Year 1934 on Friday (Mar 23) to Saturday (Mar 24) ran smoothly at the Padangbai customary village. Though until the Nyepi Day 85 trucks were waiting to be ferried to Lembar, they were still unable to be conveyed so that they had to stay overnight at the parking lot of Padangbai Harbor. In the meantime, some of those drivers were dropped to Lembar for free by joining them with other vessel.
However, most of the drivers preferred to stay in the office of ASDP Padangbai, while some others stayed at the home of truck staff around Padangbai. A long queue of trucks that could not be entirely ferried to Lembar up to Nyepi happened because the restricted number of vessels operated to serve the crossing service. Of the 11 existing vessels in operation, only two vessels had truck haulage up to 30 units, while the remaining smaller vessels had a carrying capacity up to 15 units of truck. Chief Dewa Nila Candra said that to tighten the getaway from and to Padangbai Harbor becoming the easternmost of Bali’s entrance, his party constantly performed the examination of freights, people and vehicles. But so far, he said, his party did not find any indication related to criminal offenses, including terrorism. (013)

NYEPI in Bali is not just celebrated by tightly performing the catur brata penyepian or four abstinences. Many people celebrated it with a series of Balinese traditions, chiefly on the Pengerupukan or one day before Nyepi. Aside from becoming the right moment for reflection and introspection to neutralize the inner bad qualities, Nyepi also neutralized the nature from the negative qualities. The Satria Kawan Palace, Paksebali, Dawan, Klungkung had a unique tradition known as Lukat Geni. On Pengerupukan night, Thursday (Mar 22), the Satria Kawan Palace, Paksebali, looked different from the other customary villages in Bali. Apart from parading the ogoh-ogoh symbolizing bhuta kala (viciousness), it was also accompanied with a series of Lukat Geni tradition. This tradition has been implemented through generations since many years ago. Lukat Geni was a procession of the battle situation by means of fire kindled on dried coconut leaves used as the weapon. It involved several youths in pair from the local area. Such dried coconut leaves were used as weapon, where it was first tied and then lit. Afterward, it was slapped onto each opponent. Before the procession began, the priest of royal family temple of Satria Kawan Palace invoked the safety first for the smoothness of procession. Participants and paraphernalia in use should be purified through a special ritual. Since late afternoon, the youth gathered to take part in the Lukat Geni (flame wars) tradition. The whole community, young-old and
men-women thronged to witness the attraction from a closer distance. It was performed before the ogoh-ogoh parade. For the making of ogoh-ogoh, the youth of Satria Kawan should spend up to IDR 4.5 million and took them for nearly a month. Before parading the ogoh-ogoh, participants of the Lukat Geni (the youth) looked to have beaten each other using the flames on a bundle of dried coconut leaves. Such ‘mutual beating’ action was increasingly fierce as accompanied by the vigorous baleganjur gamelan music. However, they showed off no anger, no revenge. Despite using flames, no youth looked to get injured. They sincerely did it for a single purpose, namely eliminating the bad or negative qualities. Considering the Lukat Geni tradition was basically held for cleaning up nature and neutralizing negative forces, so that they would not cause any disruption. “Besides, implementation of the Lukat Geni next year is expected to be better than the previous years,” said
the royal family temple priest of Satria Kawan Palace, Jero Mangku AA Oka. He said that Lukat Geni ritual had existed since ancient times. Due to several factors, the tradition was abolished for some periods. “However, since recent years, the ritual was re-implemented to neutralize and maintain the balance of nature,” he said without elaborating why the Lukat Geni ritual was once discontinued. The tradition of neutralizing nature from negative forces was also carried out at Dawan customary village. However, the tradition was performed differently namely by sacrificing a cow or caru sapi. It was carried out coinciding with the implementation of usabha desa taking place on the Pengerupukan. The procession was held by parading the cow from Dalem Temple, going around the village and then going to Puseh and Bale Agung Temple. Ultimately, it turned back to the end of the village and the selected cow was sacrificed or made into caru exorcism at cemetery of the Dawan customary village. (bal)

Speaking ahead of a global nuclear security summit in Seoul, Obama held out the prospect of new reductions in the U.S. arsenal as he sought to rally world leaders for additional concrete steps against the threat of nuclear terrorism. “We can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need,” Obama told students at South Korea’s Hankuk University. He pledged a new arms-con-
trol push with incoming Russian president Vladimir Putin when they meet in May. But any further reductions would face stiff election-year opposition from Republicans in Congress who already accuse him of weakening America’s nuclear deterrent. Obama laid out his latest strategy against the backdrop of continued nuclear defiance from North Korea and Iran, twin challenges that have clouded his overall nuclear agenda and the summit in Seoul. VIENNA — A piano work experts attribute to Mozart as a child prodigy was performed for the first time Friday since it was found last year after apparently being left in an attic for centuries. The lively 84-bar passage — marked “allegro molto,” or “very quick” — was played Friday on the composer’s piano in a room of his Salzburg home by virtuoso Florian Birsak. The Mozarteum Salzburg Foundation, which staged the event, said the manuscript was found last summer as part of a 160-page book of handwritten piano music as the musty attic of a house in Tyrol was being cleared from centuries of detritus. Part of a collection of notes from
a village music teacher, the book was dated 1780 — 24 years after Mozart was born — and the manuscript played Friday bore the name “Del Signore Giovane Wolfgango Mozart,” Italian for “Mr. Wolfgang Mozart Jr.” Musicologist Hildegard Hermann-Schneider, who traced the
composition to Mozart, said the fact that other pieces in the book were known works by Mozart’s father, Leopold, strengthened the case that the work was genuine. As well, Leopold Mozart often used “Wolfgango” when labeling works written by his young son, she said. From the style of the composition, Hermann-Schneider attributed it to Mozart at around the age of 11. The piece exhibits “a series of components that are found repeatedly in other Mozart piano works,” said the Mozarteum in a statement. “Judging by the current level of knowledge, it thus has to be a genuine sonata phrase from Mozart.”

Eating raisins and soy appears to help ward off high blood pressure, a key risk factor in heart disease, according to two studies presented at a major US cardiology conference on Sunday. Munching on a handful of raisins three times a day helped people with slightly elevated blood pressure lower their numbers after several weeks, said one of the studies presented at the American College of Cardiology conference. The randomized clinical trial -- believed to be the first formal measurement of raisins’ benefits on blood pressure -- involved 46 people with a condition known as pre-hypertension. That means their blood pressure ranged from 120 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) to 139 millimeters of mercury over 89 mm Hg, or just higher than normal. Compared to people who snacked on cookies or crackers, the raisin-eating group saw significant drops in blood pressure, in some cases lowering the top number, or
systolic pressure, by 10.2, or seven percent over the 12-week study. Researchers are not sure exactly why the raisins work so well, but they think it may have to do with the high level of potassium in the shriveled, dried grapes. “Raisins are packed with potassium, which is known to lower blood pressure,” said lead investigator Harold Bays, medical director of Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center. “They are also a good source of antioxidant dietary fiber that may favorably alter the biochemistry of blood vessels, causing them to be less stiff, which in turn, may reduce blood pressure.” A handful of about 60 raisins contains a gram of fiber and 212 milligrams of potassium. Raisins are often recommended as part of a high-fiber, low-fat diet to reduce blood pressure. A second study on soy showed that daily intake of foods like tofu, peanuts and green tea helped lower blood pressure in more than 5,100 white and African American people aged 18-30.
Its 225,000 annual visitors may associate the nation’s oldest natural history museum solely with dioramas and dinosaurs, but behind the scenes there is groundbreaking research conducted by world-renowned scientists and an enviable collection of some 18 million specimens representing all manner of animal, vegetable and mineral. In celebration of its bicentennial this year, the museum has finally decided that it’s OK to boast a little. For what’s believed to be the first time in 200 years, curators will bring the public into the labyrinthine museum’s normally off-limits nooks and crannies for daily tours.
“This is a rare opportunity to get a firsthand look at some of the most stunning, and sometimes bizarre, creatures you’ve ever seen,” said Academy president and chief executive officer George Gephart Jr. “We can’t wait to open our doors and show off nature’s, and the Academy’s, wondrous bounty.” The Academy will highlight a different part of its collection starting with minerals in April and ending with fossils in February 2013. Other months will focus on birds, fish, insects, mollusks, amphibians and reptiles, plants and mammals. “We’ve done behind-the-scenes tours with school groups, and with donors and members, but not anything like this,” said Ned Gilmore, an
Academy collections manager. Depending on the tour, visitors might see drawers filled with exotic colorful birds, cabinets holding polar bear skeletons, jars of preserved snakes, boxes of beautiful shells that when alive can kill a human, a wall of enormous elk skulls, a narwhal tusk and a mounted — and extinct — Caribbean Monk Seal. An accompanying exhibition, “The Academy at 200: The Nature of Discovery,” puts dozens of the academy’s show-stopping treasures on public display — many for the first time — and highlights research that museum scientists are conducting worldwide on hot topics of climate change, biodiversity, water quality and invasive species.

LOS ANGELES — Whitney Houston’s full autopsy report may offer more clues about whether the singer suffered a heart attack before her drowning death, officials said Friday. The full report, which is expected to be released in a few weeks, may include test results and physical descriptions of the singer’s heart that will show whether she suffered a heart attack, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. The report is being compiled and Winter said he did not have access to its findings, which might show whether there were any obvious signs such as discoloration of her heart that would suggest Houston had a heart attack before slipping underwater in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Feb. 11. Houston’s death has been ruled an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. The report also will include detailed toxicology results that will show how much cocaine and its byproducts were in Houston’s system when she died. Coroner’s officials said Thursday that the results showed the singer used cocaine shortly before her death, and there were indications of chronic use. Beverly Hills police detectives will use the full coroner’s report to complete their investigative file, which is not expected to be publicly released. The department has said there were no signs of foul play in connection with Houston’s death. Houston’s death on the eve of the Grammy Awards stunned the music industry and fans worldwide. The singer had battled addiction for years, but friends and family have said she
appeared committed to making a comeback in the months before her death. “We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure,” Patricia Houston, the singer’s sisterin-law and manager, wrote in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SYDNEY - Australian flag carrier Qantas and China Eastern Airlines said on Monday they will launch a new Hong Kong-based budget airline next year aimed at cashing in on China’s booming aviation market. The new low-cost Asian carrier, Jetstar Hong Kong, will fly short-haul routes, including in China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia, the partners announced. The move marks a major expansion of Jetstar, Qantas’s budget brand, which flies domestic Australian and Asian routes, and comes as the embattled carrier struggles to refocus on Asia, the world’s fast-growing aviation market. “This is a unique opportunity to capitalise on the enormous potential of the Greater China market, where the penetration of low-cost carriers is less than five percent,” Jetstar’s Chief Executive Bruce Buchanan said. “Jetstar’s fares will be 50 percent less than existing full-service carriers, which we’ve seen create new travel demand in our markets across Asia because it enables people to make more trips, more often.” Qantas and China Eastern -- which will each have an equal stake in Jetstar Hong Kong -- told the Australian Stock Exchange that the new airline would have a maximum capitalisation of US$198 million. Tirtagangga Park is one of the tourist attractions located at Ababi Village, Abang Subdistrict. It is about 5 km north of Amlapura— the regency capital—built in 1948 by the King Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. Before the construction, the park was a large spring and local people called it embukan, meaning spring. The spring was then taken advantage by surrounding villages as a source of drinking water and sacred purification for Ida Bathara (deities). On that account, the spring was made sacred by the locals. From this spring, the King of Karangasem then got the idea to build a park because it was greatly supported by the cool air and later on was named Tirtagangga Park. Just as the Sukasada Ujung Park, the Tirtagangga Park had a close attachment to the Karangasem Grand Palace. In the area of Tirtagangga Park
sits several large ponds functioned as fish ponds and public bathing. The water flowing through the large and small fountains then coming out of the mouth of the sculptures in the pool originates from the fountain. Therefore, the water is cool and refreshing. JAKARTA - The 2012 state budget will increasingly come under pressure from soaring fuel subsidy due to a rise in global crude price, an economist said. “With the global crude price reaching US$126 a barrel, the fuel subsidy may soar to Rp238 trillion,” Ikhsan Modjo of Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java, said on Sunday. He expressed hope the House of Representatives (DPR)`s budgetary board which was discussing fuel oil policy with the government would be able to find the best solution to the soaring fuel subsidy. At a working meeting with the Budgetary Board in the past couple of days, Finance Minister Agus Martowardoyo proposed a fuel subsidy of Rp138 trillion with the price of subsidized fuel oils increasing
Rp1,500 to Rp6,000 a liter effective April 1, 2012. Members of the budgetary board were divided over the government`s proposal. The meeting to discuss the amount of fuel subsidy is expected to resume on Sunday evening. If no agreement was reached at the meeting, the government`s proposal would be decided at a plenary meeting of the DPR scheduled for Thursday (March 29). Ikhsan said with the assumed oil price of US$126 a barrel, the amount of fuel subsidy would soar by Rp100 trillion. Right now the economic price of fuel oil was Rp9,000 a liter or the burden of fuel subsidy reached Rp4,500 a barrel, he said. “The oil price is predicted to continue to increase and hit a record high of US$160 a barrel, thus putting a further strain on the state budget,” he said.

fuels had been maintained at an average level enough to meet demand for 20 days. The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are still debating the 2012 revised budget that would determine whether or not the price of subsidized oil fuels would be raised. Meanwhile demonstrations against the fuel price hike continued to take place in many parts of the country.
Karen said although demand had tended to rise national stock could still be maintained at a average level of meeting demand for 20 days. “Pertamina as one of the business entities that distribute subsidized oil fuels is ready to carry out the government`s new subsidized fuel price policy as of April 1,” she said. She said Pertamina`s infrastructure starting from transportation,
stockpiling, distribution and others have all been set in a stand-by mode. To strengthen national energy resilience Karen said the state-owned oil and gas company has also been ready to make the government`s gasoline-to-natural gas conversion program for public transports successful. One of them is the UN cultural conservationist agencies, namely UNESCO. Indeed, there is no written regulation to preserve this tradition. However, due to togetherness of the residents, the perarem or convention launched is quite effective to organize the peoples’ lives, especially in the preservation of agricultural land. “The customary regulation here is quite effective to save the agricultural land whereas we have not set forth it in written document,” said the Chief of Jatiluwih Customary Village, Wayan Yasa. There are a number of conventions adequately feared by local residents. For instance, if people do not grow plant according to the schedule of subak, they will be imposed with sanctions. Then, if people harvest before the implementation of ceremony will also be imposed with sanction. Another sanction will be charged to farmers who steal water and do not follow the water distribution system. As it pertains to customary matters, the sanction imposed is not in the form of money, but in the implementation of ceremony. In every single activity of the subak, the chief of customary village was always involved, including in the rise of internal disputes of subak. According to Yasa, many investors were interested in the farmland of Jatiluwih. However, several of
them quitted after seeing the local customary rules. On that account, investors were unable to build anything on the farmland of Jatiluwih. “They could purchase the land, but cannot build anything,” he said. The land area of subak at Jatiluwih reached about 300 hectares. Of this amount, almost the entire area was owned by local residents. Meanwhile, the rest belonged to customary villagers of Gunung Sari located next to it. Customary villager of Jatiluwih amounting to 2,700 families was divided into five hamlets. The residents were mostly relying on their livelihood from subak activities at Jatiluwih. On that account, they were fighting to get special attention when Jatiluwih would actually become a part of UNESCO. Currently, Yasa said, his party still inventoried the land and other assets of subak. One of the particular concerns dreamed of was the taxfree facility for rice field and the construction of adequate irrigation channels. According to him, the irrigation played an important role in the preservation of subak. During this time, irrigation channels were often complained because they were not built properly. Aside from performing an inventory of land, the customary officials were preparing customary draft to care for the preservation of the agricultural land. At Jatiluwih there were four groups of subak that were always keen to preserve the farmland. “Similarly, we do hope there are allocation of fund from tourism revenue and agricultural preservation. Therefore, the community will not feel to be taken advantage,” he said. Yasa ascertained that with the existing convention, the subak at Jatiluwih would remain to be well arranged. DENPASAR - The PT Bosowa Corporation is constructing two star-rated hotels in Makassar and Bali at a total cost of Rp400 billion, its owner said. “The construction of the two hotels should be complete before their inauguration, which is scheduled for December 12, 2012,” Aksa Mahmud said here on Thursday. The construction of the two hotels, Novotel Makassar Grand Shayla and Fave Aston in Bali, was started last year. The company earned Rp100 billion from the hotel sector last
year, he said, adding that with the operation of two new hotels the figure would increase to Rp200 billion per year. “We hope the hotels will be completed as soon as possible so we can help develop the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions) business in Makassar and Bali,” he noted. The construction of Novotel Makassar Grand Shayla hotel cost over Rp200 billion, of which Rp137 billion came from bank loans and the rest from the company’s internal cash, he added. “We don’t buy cement, sand
and so on because all these are taken from our companies so the construction costs can be kept low,” said Aksa, who is also a member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD). Located at Jl. A plague of rove beetles – nasty enough to be historically linked to ancient plagues of Biblical proportions – is sweeping slowly across Indonesia with a limited number of infestations now reported in Bali and Lombok. The rove beetle - Paederus littoralis - carry a potent toxin containing pederin – an irritant said to be more potent than cobra venom. Discharged by the beetles automatically when they come in contact with human skin, victims develop painful itching and pussfilled wounds that are sometime misdiagnosed as herpes. The beetles, known locally as “tomcats,” have a positive role to play devouring insects harmful to farm crops. While they do not prey
on humans, their toxic blood makes contact with human skin extremely painful. The threat to humans is made even more insidious when people make the common mistake of crushing the beetles, resulting in the spread of toxins via the insects’ blood. The rove beetles can be mistaken for an ant, measuring less than 1 centimeter in length with a black body and red or orange thorax. During nighttime hours the beetles are attracted to light. Those unfortunate enough to be afflicted from contact with the rove beetle should seek medical attention, making caregivers aware of past contact with the insect. Normal remedies of powder, oils, salve and lotions are less-than-effective.
Treatments using hydrocortisone (1%), betamethasone and neomycin sulfate antibiotic, or acyclovir 5% have proven efficacy in treating irritations caused by the rove beetle. Common offf-the-shelf insecticides are efective in eliminating swarms of rove bettles found in residential areas. The rise in the rove beetle population is tied to climate change, the shrinking amount of agricultural land and raised levels of humidity. The coming dry season is expected to bring an end to the current surge in tomcat infestations that are seeping across Java, with isolated encounters now reported in some areas of Bali and Lombok. Tirtagangga Park is one of the tourist attractions located at Ababi Village, Abang Subdistrict. It is about 5 km north of Amlapura— the regency capital—built in 1948 by the King Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. Before the construction, the park was a large spring and local people called it embukan, meaning spring. The spring was then taken advantage by surrounding villages as a source of drinking water and sacred purification for Ida Bathara (deities). On that account, the spring was made sacred by the locals. From this spring, the King of Karangasem then got the idea to build a park because it was greatly supported by the cool air and later on was named Tirtagangga Park. Just as the Sukasada Ujung Park, the Tirtagangga Park had a close attachment to the Karangasem Grand Palace. In the area of Tirtagangga Park
sits several large ponds functioned as fish ponds and public bathing. The water flowing through the large and small fountains then coming out of the mouth of the sculptures in the pool originates from the fountain. Therefore, the water is cool and refreshing. Here, there are also fountains and tiered-lotus statues dividing it into two large ponds. Today, the Tirtagangga Park has religious, social as well as entertainment function. Religiously, the spring at location is used as holy water by the surrounding community. In addition, it serves as a venue for organizing Deva Yajña ritual and pilgrimage. Meanwhile, the Tirtagangga springs is socially used by local government as a source of clean water for the people of Karangasem. Then, as entertainment, the Tirtagangga is managed and developed into one of the tourist objects and attractions that is much in demand as well as visited by tourists as a place of recreation.

JAKARTA - The 2012 state budget will increasingly come under pressure from soaring fuel subsidy due to a rise in global crude price, an economist said. “With the global crude price reaching US$126 a barrel, the fuel subsidy may soar to Rp238 trillion,” Ikhsan Modjo of Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java, said on Sunday. He expressed hope the House of Representatives (DPR)`s budgetary board which was discussing fuel oil policy with the government would be able to find the best solution to the soaring fuel subsidy. At a working meeting with the Budgetary Board in the past couple of days, Finance Minister Agus Martowardoyo proposed a fuel subsidy of Rp138 trillion with the price of subsidized fuel oils increasing
Rp1,500 to Rp6,000 a liter effective April 1, 2012. Members of the budgetary board were divided over the government`s proposal. The meeting to discuss the amount of fuel subsidy is expected to resume on Sunday evening. If no agreement was reached at the meeting, the government`s proposal would be decided at a plenary meeting of the DPR scheduled for Thursday (March 29). Ikhsan said with the assumed oil price of US$126 a barrel, the amount of fuel subsidy would soar by Rp100 trillion. Right now the economic price of fuel oil was Rp9,000 a liter or the burden of fuel subsidy reached Rp4,500 a barrel, he said. “The oil price is predicted to continue to increase and hit a record high of US$160 a barrel, thus putting a further strain on the state budget,” he said.

JAKARTA - PT Pertamina has been ready to meet the implementation of subsidized oil fuel price hike, its president director, Karen Agustiawan, said here on Monday. “As many as 4,680 Pertamina filling stations across Indonesia have already made maximum preparation,” she said. She said national stock of oil
fuels had been maintained at an average level enough to meet demand for 20 days. The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are still debating the 2012 revised budget that would determine whether or not the price of subsidized oil fuels would be raised. Meanwhile demonstrations against the fuel price hike continued to take place in many parts of the country.

SYDNEY - Australian flag carrier Qantas and China Eastern Airlines said on Monday they will launch a new Hong Kong-based budget airline next year aimed at cashing in on China’s booming aviation market. The new low-cost Asian carrier, Jetstar Hong Kong, will fly short-haul routes, including in China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia, the partners announced. The move marks a major expansion of Jetstar, Qantas’s budget brand, which flies domestic Australian and Asian routes, and comes as the embattled carrier struggles to refocus on Asia, the world’s fast-growing aviation market. “This is a unique opportunity to capitalise on the enormous potential of the Greater China market, where the penetration of low-cost carriers is less than five percent,” Jetstar’s Chief Executive Bruce Buchanan said. “Jetstar’s fares will be 50 percent less than existing full-service carriers, which we’ve seen create new travel demand in our markets across Asia because it enables people to make more trips, more often.” Qantas and China Eastern -- which will each have an equal stake in Jetstar Hong Kong -- told the Australian Stock Exchange that the new airline would have a maximum capitalisation of US$198 million. Houston full autopsy report to offer more details Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — Whitney Houston’s full autopsy report may offer more clues about whether the singer suffered a heart attack before her drowning death, officials said Friday. The full report, which is expected to be released in a few weeks, may include test results and physical descriptions of the singer’s heart that will show whether she suffered a heart attack, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. The report is being compiled and Winter said he did not have access to its findings, which might show whether there were any obvious signs such as discoloration of her heart that would suggest Houston had a heart attack before slipping underwater in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Feb. 11. Houston’s death has been ruled an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. The report also will include detailed toxicology results that will show how much cocaine and its byproducts were in Houston’s system when she died. Coroner’s officials said Thursday that the results showed the singer used cocaine shortly before her death, and there were indications of chronic use. Beverly Hills police detectives will use the full coroner’s report to complete their investigative file, which is not expected to be publicly released. The department has said there were no signs of foul play in connection with Houston’s death. Houston’s death on the eve of the Grammy Awards stunned the music industry and fans worldwide. The singer had battled addiction for years, but friends and family have said she
appeared committed to making a comeback in the months before her death. “We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure,” Patricia Houston, the singer’s sisterin-law and manager, wrote in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SEOUL - U.S. President Barack Obama vowed on Monday to pursue further nuclear arms cuts with Russia, saying the United States has more warheads than necessary, and issued stern warnings to North Korea and Iran in their nuclear standoffs with the West. Speaking ahead of a global nuclear security summit in Seoul, Obama held out the prospect of new reductions in the U.S. arsenal as he sought to rally world leaders for additional concrete steps against the threat of nuclear terrorism. “We can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need,” Obama told students at South Korea’s Hankuk University. He pledged a new arms-con-
trol push with incoming Russian president Vladimir Putin when they meet in May. But any further reductions would face stiff election-year opposition from Republicans in Congress who already accuse him of weakening America’s nuclear deterrent. Obama laid out his latest strategy against the backdrop of continued nuclear defiance from North Korea and Iran, twin challenges that have clouded his overall nuclear agenda and the summit in Seoul. The lively 84-bar passage — marked “allegro molto,” or “very quick” — was played Friday on the composer’s piano in a room of his Salzburg home by virtuoso Florian Birsak. The Mozarteum Salzburg Foundation, which staged the event, said the manuscript was found last summer as part of a 160-page book of handwritten piano music as the musty attic of a house in Tyrol was being cleared from centuries of detritus. Part of a collection of notes from
a village music teacher, the book was dated 1780 — 24 years after Mozart was born — and the manuscript played Friday bore the name “Del Signore Giovane Wolfgango Mozart,” Italian for “Mr. Wolfgang Mozart Jr.” Musicologist Hildegard Hermann-Schneider, who traced the
composition to Mozart, said the fact that other pieces in the book were known works by Mozart’s father, Leopold, strengthened the case that the work was genuine. As well, Leopold Mozart often used “Wolfgango” when labeling works written by his young son, she said. From the style of the composition, Hermann-Schneider attributed it to Mozart at around the age of 11. The piece exhibits “a series of components that are found repeatedly in other Mozart piano works,” said the Mozarteum in a statement. “Judging by the current level of knowledge, it thus has to be a genuine sonata phrase from Mozart.”

Eating raisins and soy appears to help ward off high blood pressure, a key risk factor in heart disease, according to two studies presented at a major US cardiology conference on Sunday. Munching on a handful of raisins three times a day helped people with slightly elevated blood pressure lower their numbers after several weeks, said one of the studies presented at the American College of Cardiology conference. The randomized clinical trial -- believed to be the first formal measurement of raisins’ benefits on blood pressure -- involved 46 people with a condition known as pre-hypertension. That means their blood pressure ranged from 120 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) to 139 millimeters of mercury over 89 mm Hg, or just higher than normal. Compared to people who snacked on cookies or crackers, the raisin-eating group saw significant drops in blood pressure, in some cases lowering the top number, or
systolic pressure, by 10.2, or seven percent over the 12-week study. Researchers are not sure exactly why the raisins work so well, but they think it may have to do with the high level of potassium in the shriveled, dried grapes. “Raisins are packed with potassium, which is known to lower blood pressure,” said lead investigator Harold Bays, medical director of Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center. “They are also a good source of antioxidant dietary fiber that may favorably alter the biochemistry of blood vessels, causing them to be less stiff, which in turn, may reduce blood pressure.” A handful of about 60 raisins contains a gram of fiber and 212 milligrams of potassium. Raisins are often recommended as part of a high-fiber, low-fat diet to reduce blood pressure. A second study on soy showed that daily intake of foods like tofu, peanuts and green tea helped lower blood pressure in more than 5,100 white and African American people aged 18-30.

In celebration of its bicentennial this year, the museum has finally decided that it’s OK to boast a little. For what’s believed to be the first time in 200 years, curators will bring the public into the labyrinthine museum’s normally off-limits nooks and crannies for daily tours.
“This is a rare opportunity to get a firsthand look at some of the most stunning, and sometimes bizarre, creatures you’ve ever seen,” said Academy president and chief executive officer George Gephart Jr. “We can’t wait to open our doors and show off nature’s, and the Academy’s, wondrous bounty.” The Academy will highlight a different part of its collection starting with minerals in April and ending with fossils in February 2013. Other months will focus on birds, fish, insects, mollusks, amphibians and reptiles, plants and mammals. “We’ve done behind-the-scenes tours with school groups, and with donors and members, but not anything like this,” said Ned Gilmore, an

Depending on the tour, visitors might see drawers filled with exotic colorful birds, cabinets holding polar bear skeletons, jars of preserved snakes, boxes of beautiful shells that when alive can kill a human, a wall of enormous elk skulls, a narwhal tusk and a mounted — and extinct — Caribbean Monk Seal. An accompanying exhibition, “The Academy at 200: The Nature of Discovery,” puts dozens of the academy’s show-stopping treasures on public display — many for the first time — and highlights research that museum scientists are conducting worldwide on hot topics of climate change, biodiversity, water quality and invasive species.

NYEPI in Bali is not just celebrated by tightly performing the catur brata penyepian or four abstinences. Many people celebrated it with a series of Balinese traditions, chiefly on the Pengerupukan or one day before Nyepi. Aside from becoming the right moment for reflection and introspection to neutralize the inner bad qualities, Nyepi also neutralized the nature from the negative qualities. The Satria Kawan Palace, Paksebali, Dawan, Klungkung had a unique tradition known as Lukat Geni. On Pengerupukan night, Thursday (Mar 22), the Satria Kawan Palace, Paksebali, looked different from the other customary villages in Bali. Apart from parading the ogoh-ogoh symbolizing bhuta kala (viciousness), it was also accompanied with a series of Lukat Geni tradition. This tradition has been implemented through generations since many years ago. Lukat Geni was a procession of the battle situation by means of fire kindled on dried coconut leaves used as the weapon. It involved several youths in pair from the local area. Such dried coconut leaves were used as weapon, where it was first tied and then lit. Afterward, it was slapped onto each opponent. Before the procession began, the priest of royal family temple of Satria Kawan Palace invoked the safety first for the smoothness of procession. Participants and paraphernalia in use should be purified through a special ritual. Since late afternoon, the youth gathered to take part in the Lukat Geni (flame wars) tradition. The whole community, young-old and
men-women thronged to witness the attraction from a closer distance. It was performed before the ogoh-ogoh parade. For the making of ogoh-ogoh, the youth of Satria Kawan should spend up to IDR 4.5 million and took them for nearly a month. Before parading the ogoh-ogoh, participants of the Lukat Geni (the youth) looked to have beaten each other using the flames on a bundle of dried coconut leaves. Such ‘mutual beating’ action was increasingly fierce as accompanied by the vigorous baleganjur gamelan music. However, they showed off no anger, no revenge. Despite using flames, no youth looked to get injured. They sincerely did it for a single purpose, namely eliminating the bad or negative qualities. Considering the Lukat Geni tradition was basically held for cleaning up nature and neutralizing negative forces, so that they would not cause any disruption. “Besides, implementation of the Lukat Geni next year is expected to be better than the previous years,” said
the royal family temple priest of Satria Kawan Palace, Jero Mangku AA Oka. He said that Lukat Geni ritual had existed since ancient times. Due to several factors, the tradition was abolished for some periods. “However, since recent years, the ritual was re-implemented to neutralize and maintain the balance of nature,” he said without elaborating why the Lukat Geni ritual was once discontinued. The tradition of neutralizing nature from negative forces was also carried out at Dawan customary village. However, the tradition was performed differently namely by sacrificing a cow or caru sapi. It was carried out coinciding with the implementation of usabha desa taking place on the Pengerupukan. Thousands of clove trees topple Singaraja (Bali Post)—
Clove farmers at several villages in Buleleng are ascertained to suffer great losses in this year’s harvest season. This happens because thousands of their productive clove trees toppled as hit by high winds and heavy rains a few weeks ago. at all. When contacted separately, the Division Head of Plantation Services Nyoman Partayasa, with permission from the Head of Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency Komang Gede Yasa, said that after strong winds and heavy rains his party had received some reports on the falling clove trees from the extension field officers (PPL). From
the temporary report, the most falling clove trees happened at Umajero village, Busungbiu subdistrict (1,241) and they were all productive trees. Those clove trees belonged to 29 farmers. Similarly, the incident also occurred at Bengkel village, Busungbiu subdistrict where 52 clove trees toppled and they were ensured to face crop failure. Other falling clove trees also came about at Galungan village, Sawan subdistrict where 100 trees toppled, while at Pegayaman and Pegadungan village, Sukasada subdistrict, was recorded a total of 1,000 falling clove trees. “Based on temporary data, the falling clove trees or breaking branches reached more than 2,000 trees and our staff is still collecting the data,” he said. According to Komang Gede Yasa, so far there was no handling for the farmers suffering crop losses due to the falling clove trees. Nevertheless, the Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency would attempt to provide seedling assistance to alleviate the losses of farmers. “Having collected the data on the losses, we are trying to provide them with seedling assistance. Hopefully, the seedling assistance could slightly alleviate the losses of farmers,” he said. (kmb)

jendra. The Dharmayatra palm-leaf manuscript mentions that after coming to Uluwatu Danghyang Dwijendra provided suggestion to the surrounding community. Then, he resumed his journey eastward. As soon as arriving on a beautiful hilly area exuding a strong spiritual vibration, precisely in the southwest of Kutuh customary village, Dang Hyang Nirartha along with his entourage took a short break to unwind. The arrival of maharishi was welcomed enthusiastically by the local community. They took the opportunity to meet him in person and ask religious directions and guidance. He was also willing to help people by putting up the stick of his umbrella. Due to spiritual power he possessed, a holy water suddenly spurted from the location where the stick of the umbrella was stuck. The water source is known as kubung suci by local communities and located in the innermost courtyard of the Gunung Payung Temple functioned as a holy headspring. Before leaving the village to resume his pilgrimage, Dang Hyang Nirartha provided advice to local people to always keep the amrita water coming out from where he stuck the umbrella handle. On Nyepi, 85 trucks stay overnight at Padangbai Amlapura (Bali Post)—
Padangbai Harbor, Karangasem, was still replete with trucks in queue reaching the T-junction of Padangbai because they were waiting for ferry service to Lembar. Meanwhile, the Chief of Padangbai Harbor Police (KP3), Dewa Ketut Nila Candra, with permission of the Karangasem Police Chief, Jefri Torunde, Sunday (Mar 25) said that on Pengerupukan and Nyepi of the Caka New Year 1934 on Friday (Mar 23) to Saturday (Mar 24) ran smoothly at the Padangbai customary village. Though until the Nyepi Day 85 trucks were waiting to be ferried to Lembar, they were still unable to be conveyed so that they had to stay overnight at the parking lot of Padangbai Harbor. In the meantime, some of those drivers were dropped to Lembar for free by joining them with other vessel.
However, most of the drivers preferred to stay in the office of ASDP Padangbai, while some others stayed at the home of truck staff around Padangbai. A long queue of trucks that could not be entirely ferried to Lembar up to Nyepi happened because the restricted number of vessels operated to serve the crossing service. Of the 11 existing vessels in operation, only two vessels had truck haulage up to 30 units, while the remaining smaller vessels had a carrying capacity up to 15 units of truck. Chief Dewa Nila Candra said that to tighten the getaway from and to Padangbai Harbor becoming the easternmost of Bali’s entrance, his party constantly performed the examination of freights, people and vehicles. But so far, he said, his party did not find any indication related to criminal offenses, including terrorism. (013)
