India’s Bollywood legend Sridevi dies at 54 of cardiac arrest NEW DELHI - Indian actress Sridevi, arguably Bollywood’s first female superstar, died in Dubai after cardiac arrest, media reported on Sunday. She was 54. Sridevi is survived by her husband - producer Boney Kapoor - and daughters Jhanvi and Khushi. She was in Dubai to attend a family wedding and died late on Saturday. In a career spanning five decades, Sridevi acted in 300 films and was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour in 2013. Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, she started acting at the age of four, appearing in several Tamillanguage films in the 1960s and 1970s, and eventually dropping out of school for a career in the movies. She acted in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films, performing alongside leading men such as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. Sridevi made her Bollywood debut in 1979 with “Solva Sawan” (16th spring), but it was in 1983, with Balu Mahendra’s “Sadma” (Shock) that she made her mark in
the Hindi film industry. The year, she also acted with Jeetendra in K. Raghavendra Rao’s blockbuster “Himmatwala” (The courageous one), cementing her place as one of Bollywood’s top actresses. Through the 1980s and 1990s she charmed audiences in femalecentric films such as “Chandni” (Moonlight) and “Lamhe” (Moments), drawing praise for her comic timing in “Chaalbaaz” (Trickster) and Shekhar Kapur’s “Mr India”, playing feisty characters in contrast to the traditionally coy Bollywood heroine. Sridevi took a break from films soon after she married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996. A noticeably leaner Sridevi made a successful return to the big screen 15 years later in Gauri Shinde’s “English Vinglish” (2012), playing a housewife taking English-language lessons. Her last screen appearance was in “Mom” (2017), as a mother avenging her daughter’s rape. Sridevi’s death triggered an outpouring of tributes from Bollywood luminaries and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (rtr)

‘Black Panther’ Rules With $108 Million in Second Weekend
LOS ANGELES - Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” is dominating the box office with an astounding $108 million at 4,020 North American locations -- the second-highest second weekend ever behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” “Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman, has now grossed $400 million domestically in its first 10 days. Only “The Force Awakens” has reached that milestone faster. It’s also grossed $304 million internationally. The superhero film, the 18th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, declined only 46 percent from its opening Friday-Sunday -- underlining the film’s massive appeal among moviegoers. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” set the second weekend record with $149 million in 2015, and “Black Panther” topped the second weekends of 2015’s “Jurassic World” at $106.6 million, and 2012’s “The Avengers” with $103 million. “Black Panther,” directed by Ryan Coogler, has caught on with
moviegoers this month in a way that few other titles have in Hollywood’s recent history -- blowing past last month’s tracking that showed it would open in the $100 million to $120 million range. It’s notched an A+ Cinemascore -- becoming only the second Marvel film to do so -- and has dazzled critics with a 97 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya and Letitia Wright. Jakarta’s Christian ex-governor challenges blasphemy conviction
JAKARTA - Jakarta’s former governor, a Christian convicted of insulting Islam, sought a judicial review of his case on Monday, as several hundred of his supporters and hardline Islamist protesters gathered outside a court in the Indonesian capital. The ethnic Chinese Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly known as “Ahok”, was jailed for two years for blasphemy in 2017, provoking international condemnation amid concerns of political motivation after Islamist-led rallies demanded his imprisonment. Purnama’s request for a judi-
cial review will be passed on to the Supreme Court, a judge at a lower court hearing said. “We have completed the examination and the dossiers will

MANGUPURA - A total of 100 delegates consisting of 60 embassies from 38 countries and 4 international institutions participated in a diplomatic tour entitled ‘Ambassador Outing to Bali’ aimed at helping tourism in Bali recover.
The honoured guests were welcomed with a dinner at Taman Bhagawan on Friday (Feb. 23), followed by Saturday’s the Ring of Fire Tour to Tirta Gangga, Kintamani and Tegallalang the and Sincere with Love Gala Dinner on the Island Peninsula, Nusa Dua. The next day was was spent enjoying Sunday Morning Golf at Bali National Golf Club, Spa treatments at M Spa and other activities at Museum Pasifika and Bali Collection. The ambassadors were invited to see for themselves the current conditions in Bali so they can disseminate accurate information to counter influential negative news about tourist visits to Bali. “This is a recovery measure for Bali tourism”, explained Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Abdurrachman Fachir, during the Sincere with Love Gala Dinner on Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua on Saturday (Feb. 24). He invited the ambassadors to share photos of their visit to Bali with their family, friends and other people in their respective country by uploading them to their Twitter, Instagram, website and other social media sites. Even though they are only here for a brief visits, he said such photos will certainly have a big impact. Armed with the correct information about current conditions in Bali, they can play a big part in having tourists feel confident about
coming to Bali, he said. Meanwhile, the visit of Chinese tourists, according to Chairman of Indonesia Association of Tourism Industry (GIPI) Bali, I.B. Agung Partha, said that the visit from the ambassadors can provide the latest picture of the real situation, Having the Chinese ambassador visit is especially important as Chinese tourists are still not arriving in the same numbers as usual. “The ambassadors were surprised when they were invited to visit a number of places, such as to Karangasem to Besakih, Tirta Gangga and Taman Bhagawan in Tanjung Benoa, as people are going about their normal business. This is different than what they imagined. This positive news needs to be spread quickly”, he emphasized. Director of Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Abdulbar M. Mansoer, revealed that as a company engaged in the tourism sector ITDC has a responsibility to support the improvement of the tourism sector. This includes support the recovery of tourism in Bali and the realization of the the target of having 17 million visitors in 2018 and 20 million in 2019 as tourist visits to Bali account for 40 percent of all tourist visits to Indonesia. Despite the widespread decline in the number of tourists who visited Bali in the last three months of 2017, Nusa Dua in fact saw an increase with 80 occupancy rates, compared to the 70 -75 percent occupancy rates recorded for 2016. “Ambassadors are very influential in making decisions related to issuing travel advisories. DENPASAR - The conclusion of the international conference on local language held at Udayana University’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) recently was that the rescue and preservation of local languages requires vivacious and sustainable action. Researcher and lecturer from Cendrawasih University, Adolfina Krisifu, conveyed three main measures that can be implemented to supoort local languages: research by academic groups whose results can be given to the government to develop real policies and programs, the use of local language in various domains such as education, religious activities and encouraging use at the family level. A representative from Tadulako University, Ulinsa, conveyed that the use of relevant technology can be used to help support local languages. Local folkloric tales for example can be presented in animations to attract the attention of children and young people. “We must not only let our children know Japanese comics”, said Ulinsa. Maria Matildis Banda from Udayana University said that the wealth of vocabulary and interesting concepts inhering in local language can be adopted into literary works. This, she said can revive the language. “It is important that sustainable measures be taken to examine local language so that its grammar can continue to be learned in the future”, said this novelist who also lectures on Indonesian Literature at Unud’s FIB. Banda suggested that the artists and writers should be given a space to liven up the rescue of local languages. She pointed out that there are fewer and fewer living spaces for artists, speakers and writers of minor local languages. Many of these languages lack a literary tradition and have few speakers so without a living space for the language to thrive, it is very hard to preserve. A representative from Hassanuddin University, Arga Maulana Pasanrangi, conveyed a similar opinion saying that local languages can be supported by having more performing arts presentations in these languages so that more people can appreciate the language. “ The government and the public play important roles in this matter”, he added. Professor from Udayan University’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, said that Bali is a very appropriate place to host an international conference of local languages because Bali has been able to maintain its mother tongue quite well. Balinese people are always enthusiastic about preserving and practicing the Balinese language as well as their cultural practices which are the basis of their identity. “In Bali, literature, performing arts, et cetera are all well developed in harmony with the Balinese language”, said Darma Putra who delivered his paper entitled “Medium of Modernity to Balinese Language in the Contemporary Literary Landscape”. Chairperson of the Local Language Conference Committee 2018, Ida Ayu Laksmita Sari, said that the local language conference was very inspiring. Hopefully, its implementation in other venue will also explore various aspects of how to empower and develop local languages. (kmb42)

Primitive art: Neanderthals were Europe’s first painters
LONDON - The world’s oldest known cave paintings were made by Neanderthals, not modern humans, suggesting our extinct cousins were far from being uncultured brutes. A high-tech analysis of cave art at three Spanish sites, published on Thursday, dates the paintings to at least 64,800 years ago, or 20,000 years before modern humans arrived in Europe from Africa. That makes the cave art much older than previously thought and provides the strongest evidence yet that Neanderthals had the cognitive capacity to understand symbolic representation, a central pillar of human culture. “What we’ve got here is a smoking gun that really overturns the notion that Neanderthals were knuckle-dragging cavemen,” said Alistair Pike, professor of archaeological sciences at the University of Southampton, who co-led the study. “Painting is something that has always been seen as a very human activity, so if Neanderthals are doing it they are being just like us,”
he told Reuters. While some archaeologists already viewed Neanderthals as more sophisticated than their commonplace caricature, the evidence until now has been inconclusive. With the data from the three Spanish cave sites described in the journal Science, Pike and colleagues believe they finally have rock-solid proof. The early cave art at La Pasiega, Maltravieso and Ardales includes lines, dots, discs and hand stencils - and creating them would have involved specific skills, such as mixing pigments and selecting appropriate display locations. The Neanderthals living in the same land that would one day give birth to Diego Velazquez and Pablo Picasso also needed the intellectual ability to think symbolically, like modern humans. Scientists used a precise dating system based on the radioactive decay of uranium isotopes into thorium to assess the age of the paintings. This involved scraping a few milligrams of calcium carbonate deposit from the paintings for
analysis. A second related study published in Science Advances found that dyed and decorated marine shells from a different Spanish cave also dated back to pre-human times. Taken together, the researchers said their work suggested that Neanderthals were “cognitively indistinguishable” from early modern humans. Joao Zilhao of the University of Barcelona said the new findings meant the search for the origins of human cognition needed to go back to the common ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans more than 500,000 years ago. Neanderthals died out about 40,000 years ago, soon after direct ancestors arrived in Europe. It is unclear what killed them off, although theories include an inability to adapt to climate change and increased competition from modern humans. If they were still alive today, Pike believes they could well have gone on develop complex art and technology. (rtr)

MINYA - Egyptian archaeologists have discovered an ancient necropolis containing 40 stone sarcophagi, about 1,000 small statues and a necklace charm bearing the hieroglyphic inscription “happy new year”. Antiquities minister Khaled El-Enany said on Saturday the discovery near Tuna al-Gabal, south of Cairo, consisted of a large number of burial shafts dating from the late Pharaonic period to the early Ptolomaic era. The site, which is more than 2,000 years old, is expected to take another five years to excavate. “It’s only the beginning,” said Enany. “We are very soon going to add a new archaeological attraction to Middle Egypt.” Egypt’s relics are a draw for foreign visitors and authorities hope new finds can help attract more as a way to help revive tourism hit by the unrest that followed the overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. The number of tourists visiting the country rose 54 percent to 8.3 million last year, still below the 14.7 million who came in 2010. Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the scarab charm with the new year greeting had been unearthed last New Year’s Eve in a “wonderful coincidence”. “This is a message sent to us from the afterlife,” he said. MANGUPURA — Badung’s district government is committed to promoting education with such policies as providing tuition -ree schooling, adequate facilities and infrastructure and by training human resources who can provide high quality education. Head of the Badung Education Agency, Ketut Widia Astika, said that through the Regional Budget Plan (APBD) they are continuing to improve the quality of education in Badung. “Badung has created a program to ensure that all schools are improved in terms of facilities, infrastructure and human resources that will result in a quality learning experiences for the population. We are continuing to purse this goal according to the demands of changing times”, said Widia Astika on Saturday (Feb. 24). Astika explained that the District of Badung has launched a number of programs in the field of education. Elementary and junior high school education is being provided for free, elementary school students

Chairman of the Commission for Business Competition Supervision (KPPU), Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf, revealed that rice stock of Bulog per January reached 780,000-800,000 tons. Ideally, Bulog rice supplies reach 1 million tons. So, the stock shortage is only around 200,000 tons. “Such deficiency indicates that we are not confident in our ability to keep our rice supply. Then, it is supplied with import of 500,000 tons, though in reality the import is only 260,000 tons. Besides, it is not distributed to the market but stored in Bulog warehouses,” he said not long ago. Based on the data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the rice consumption of Indonesian reaches 30 million tons per year. The data also show the rice production reaches 41 million tons while the USDA data show 37 million tons. If the data are correct, Indonesia should have surplus of rice. “So, Bulog should be reformed why Bulog is not able to absorb the rice of farmers. If all this time Bulog buys rice from farmers, in the future it must also absorb grain from farmers,” he concluded. The existing mechanisms in Bulog must be changed, so that Bulog has the ability to absorb grain. Bulog has milling machine, storage and drying machines. Thus, Bulog does not just absorb rice from farmers. “As long as the pattern is still like the current condition and there is no change, we will not be able to achieve self-sufficiency in rice,” he said while mentioning that regarding the rice matter Indonesia no longer imported rice in 2017. Bulog argued it could not absorb grain of farmers
because the grain price is above the government standard price (HPP) reaching above IDR 3,700 per kg whereas from February to August belonged to massive harvest. At that time, the price of grain dropped and farmers usually suffered losses so that Bulog should absorb the grain of farmers during the period. “If Bulog is targeted to absorb 3.7 million tons of grain, it should be filled with 50 percent in February to August. So far, Bulog does not do this effectively,” he added. Therefore, other than purchasing rice, Bulog should also purchase the grain of farmers. Bulog also needs to make improvements by repairing the warehouse and modernization of rice milling machine. Bulog must invest to buy rice drying machine in cooperation with farmer groups. By that way, Bulog can be a guarantor for farmers when they want to access capital to the bank. The price of unhulled grain is cheap. To increase the selling price, the grain must be dried. Head of Bulog for Bali Regional Division, Wahyu Sutanto, said this year Bulog is targeting rice absorption in Bali at 2,500 tons. Until now, only 155 tons can be absorbed. Youth reminds that garbage affects tourism
NEGARA — Without massive handling, the waste pollution will threaten the environment. Marine debris besieging the coastal area, for example, also indirectly has an impact on tourism. The behavior of littering is the main cause of this problem. The length of coastline spreading across 76 kilometers from Gilimanuk to Pengeragoan, almost the whole length is vulnerable to be covered with garbage. WELLINGTON - At least one company began evacuating nonessential personnel after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Papua New Guinea’s energy-rich interior on Monday, causing landslides, damaging buildings and closing oil and gas operations. The tremor hit in the rugged, heavily forested Southern Highlands about 560 km (350 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, at around 3.45 a.m. local time (1545 GMT Sunday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). A spokesman at Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Centre said by telephone the affected area was very remote and the agency could not properly assess damage until communication was re-established. He said there were no confirmed casualties, although the International Red Cross (IRC) in Papua New Guinea said some reports indicated there were “fears of human casualties”. “It’s a very serious all across the Southern Highlands and also all over the western highlands. People are definitely very frightened,” Udaya Regmi, the head of the IRC in Papua New Guinea, said by telephone from Port Moresby. The PNG government also said it had sent disaster assessment teams.

DILI - East Timor and Australia have reached an agreement for a treaty on their disputed maritime border and on a “pathway” to develop the giant Greater Sunrise offshore gas fields, the Permanent Court of Arbitration said on Monday. Under the agreement, the share of revenue from the offshore gas field will differ depending on downstream benefits that arise from “different development concepts”, the statement said following talks in Kuala Lumpur. The agreement would establish a maritime boundary in the Timor Sea for the first time. Australia had sought a boundary aligned with its continental shelf, but East Timor argued the border should lie half way between it and Australia - placing much of the Greater Sunrise fields under its control. The long-running dispute had led the owners of Greater Sunrise Woodside Petroleum, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell and Japan’s Osaka Gas - to shelve the project. The fields are estimated to hold 5.1 trillion cubic feet of gas and
226 million barrels of condensates, which analysts have previously estimated could be worth $40 billion. However, development could be at least a decade away, with Woodside looking at the latter half of the next decade. Ending years of opposition, Australia agreed in 2017 to accept Dili’s formal notice to terminate an agreement to split petroleum revenue equally from Greater Sunrise and set a 50-year timetable for negotiating a permanent sea boundary. Dili had taken the long-running maritime border dispute to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, an intergovernmental organisation based at The Hague, which ordered compulsory arbitration between the two parties. The court announced last year that the countries had reached an agreement “on the central elements of a maritime boundary delimitation between them in the Timor Sea” – but that details would remain confidential until the deal was finalised. U.S. trying to “embarrass” Pakistan with terror financing list - minister
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s de facto finance minister, Miftah Ismail, has brushed off concerns that economic growth will suffer because of the country’s re-inclusion on a terrorist financing watch list, and lashed out against the United States for seeking to “embarrass” his nation. Washington last week persuaded member states of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to place Pakistan back on the “grey list” of nations with inadequate terrorist financing or money laundering controls. Pakistan was on the list for three years, until 2015.
The diplomatic setback has sparked anger in Islamabad against United States, which championed the motion against Pakistan at the FATF meeting in Paris. It represented another blow to the worsening relationship between the uneasy allies, who have long differed on how to combat Islamist militants waging war in Afghanistan. It has also heightened concerns that Pakistan is becoming internationally isolated, and that its economy could suffer if global banking intuitions cut links with the nuclear-armed nation, or otherwise increase the cost of doing business with Pakistan. Ismail, officially the adviser on finance, revenue and economic affairs to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, led Pakistan’s negotiations in Paris. He told Reuters that Washington did not seem genuinely eager to see Pakistan boost its terrorist financing regulations and was instead bent on humiliating the country. “If the Americans were interested in working with us and improving our CTF (counter-terrorist financing) regulations, they would have taken the offer I was making them,” Ismail said. “But their idea was just to embarrass Pakistan.” Diplomatic and Pakistani government sources say Pakistan fended off a U.S.-led motion on Tuesday as Turkey, China and the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) countries objected to it. But in a break from tradition, the motion was brought up again on Thursday and passed as the GCC and China dropped their objections. These students studied for ten days and practiced for 2.5 hours a day. They know the Kakul Mas Dance Studio from his father, the late I Ketut Kantor. One of their lecturers had learned mask dance directly from the late I Ketut Kantor. Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor. These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In practicing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan. The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan. “Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal account,” he said.

North Bali is truly wealthy when it comes to traditional cultural practices that have been passed down uninterrupted for countless generations. One example is the tradition known as ‘nyakan diwang’ that the people of Catur Desa Adat Dalem Tamblingan, Umajero Village, Gobleg, Munduk, Gesing continue to practice. Nyakan Diwang essentially means ‘cooking by the side of the road’ and this tradition manages to strengthen the peace and harmony amongst the people who practice it. The process begins anywhere between midnight and dawn. Head of the Traditional Village of Munduk, Jro Putu Ardana, explained on Thursday (Mar 3) that the nyakan diwang tradition is part of the ‘Ngembak Geni’ celebrations that take place the day after the Holy Day of Nyepi (day of Silence). The people of Catur Desa Adat Dalem Tamblingan, and surrounding area feel their relations and communications thus become more intense and believe strongly in the power of nyakan diwang to give rise to a strong sense of community. “This tradition is related to Nyepi and so local residents will cook their food outside their house before bringing it inside. While they are cooking, their communication with their neighbors is woven into harmony as they exchange recipes. The value of togetherness is thus passed down from generation to generation with a feeling of peace and harmony. During this activity there is no separation among people and great joy is taken in tasting each others food” said Ardana. Umajero Busungbiu Village public figure, I Nyoman Arya, added that the nyakan diwang tradition has been well guarded by the people of this village since long ago. “The people of Gobleg, Umajero, Munduk, Gesing and other villages in the area have passed

down this tradition from generation to generation. Starting at midnight people are already getting ready to start cooking’’ he said. The tradition of nyakan diwang’s meaning is philosophically related to a manifestation of the sense of gratitude towards Creator for having provided blessings, abundance, safety and peace. “We do this to show our gratitude and every year we have been blessed with ease in conducting this activity”, added Arya. Durign Nyepi, just like other Balinese, people here honor the four abstinences; amatigeni (no lighting of fire or lamps), amati lelanguan (no sensory pleasure), amatilelungan (no traveling/walking around), dan amatikarya (no work). Through the nyakan diwang tradition as people gather outside their homes, they enjoy a friendly atmosphere and it is no surprise that they exchange friendly greetings. This type of activity truly strengthens the peace and harmony of the community. “By cooking together on the street, a feeling of togetherness arises and people naturally greet each other. This activity -that takes place right after Nyepi, helps to safeguard togetherness” emphasised Arya. Cooking implements such as makeshift hearths made of stone or brick are made ready for the dry wood that will be used as fuel for the fire. Mornings in the mountain are cold so the first thing that people prepare is hot water for coffee or tea. Then they start cooking rice and other dishes. “While enjoying the atmosphere of the early morning, local residents prepare their meals over the course of an hour or two. Once everything is cooked, the food is brought inside to be enjoyed by the family. Another aspect of this unique tradition is the exchanging of recipes with neighbours” he said. (kmb)

ANKARA - Turkey deployed police special forces to the northwestern Syrian region of Afrin on Monday for a “new battle” in its five-week campaign against the Kurdish YPG militia, despite a U.N. call at the weekend for a ceasefire across Syria. Gun lobby pushes back on Trump’s gun plans after Florida shooting
WASHINGTON - The National Rifle Association pushed back on Sunday against modest proposals by President Donald Trump and other Republicans to change U.S. gun laws after a school shooting in Florida that killed 17 students and staff. The powerful gun lobby group does not support Trump’s proposals to raise the age limit for buying certain types of guns and to ban bump stocks that enable semi-automatic rifles to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute, a spokeswoman said on ABC’s “This Week.” “The NRA doesn’t back any ban,” Dana Loesch said. Trump was endorsed by the NRA in his 2016 presidential election campaign and often trumpets his support for Americans’ constitutional right to own guns. Smuggling of drugs has reached alarming level: House speaker JAKARTA - Attempts to smuggle large quantities of drugs repeatedly into the country had reached an unprecedented level, House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo stated. “I urge the police to thoroughly investigate the syndicates of drug networks operating in Indonesia,” Soesatyo noted in a written statement in Jakarta on Saturday. Soesatyo made the statement in response to the attempt to smuggle in three tons of meth aboard a Taiwanese-flagged fishing boat from Myanmar in the waters of the Riau Islands of Sumatra. This attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of meth was thwarted by the Riau Islands Customs Team. Soesatyo also lauded the Riau Islands Customs Team that had successfully foiled the efforts to smuggle three tons of meth, locally known as sabu-sabu. The House Speaker said the Chinese intelligence had provided information to the National Narcotics Agency on the attempt to smuggle meth into Indonesia. According to the information, some five tons of meth worth Rp10 trillion was to be smuggled into Indonesia. The first attempt to smuggle one ton of the illegal drug was earlier foiled in the waters of Batam, Riau Island Province. The second consignment of 1.6 tons was also seized in the waters of Batam last week, and the third catch of three tons was confiscated on Friday (Feb 23) in the waters of Batam Island. Soesatyo called on the police to take legal action, not only against the crew members who served only as couriers but also against drug lords. “Legal action must be taken not only against the crew members but also against those behind the syndicate,” Soesatyo emphasized. Earlier, a Singapore-flagged ship, allegedly carrying 1.6 tons of methamphetamine, was seized by Indonesia`s customs officers in Anambas waters of Riau Islands. The vessel, with four Chinese crews, carried the illegal drugs in 81 sacks, with each sack containing 20 kilograms of meth, Antara reported here on Tuesday. The ship was detained near Sekupang Port. The police are yet to provide further information on the arrest, while Riau Islands police chief Inspector General Didid W did not comment. Besides that, the Indonesian navy has also stated that it had seized a fishing vessel carrying one ton of crystal methamphetamine off Batam waters early this month. The drugs were smuggled in 41 rice sacks, and the boat MV Sunrise Glory, which was flying a Singapore flag, was operated by Taiwanese crew members. Authorities suspect the vessel of also being a `phantom ship, which likely uses many names, including Sun De Man 66. (ant)

Biggest Indonesian party backs President Widodo for new term
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s biggest political party in parliament on Friday endorsed President Joko Widodo as its candidate for elections in 2019, joining four other parties backing him for a second term. The presidential election is widely expected to be a re-run of a 2014 vote with Widodo taking on retired general Prabowo Subianto of the opposition Gerindra (Greater Indonesia Movement) party.
“I hearby state that the PDIP presidential candidate is Joko Widodo,” Megawati Sukarnoputri, chairwoman of the nationalist Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) party, said in a video from the party’s congress on the island of Bali. Photographs on the Twitter feed of cabinet secretary and PDIP member Pramono Anung showed a smiling Widodo and Sukarnoputri holding up their arms together surrounded by party members. JAKARTA - International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Monday called on Indonesia to boost its potential growth rate and channel revenues to more development spending to help create jobs for its growing labor force. After meeting with President Joko Widodo at the start of a weeklong trip to Indonesia, Lagarde praised the country’s economic management and stronger policies.
“Indonesia’s economy continues to prove resilient with a sound economic performance and favorable outlook,” she said in a statement issued after the meeting. But in recent years, Indonesia has struggled to get its growth rate to exceed 5 percent, well below the pace of China and India, amid tepid consumer demand and foreign direct investment. GDP growth failed to meet the government’s 5.2 percent budget
target last year and the IMF is forecasting that Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, will grow by 5.3 percent in 2018. Lagarde said she and Widodo discussed the importance of achieving higher potential growth to help create jobs, adding “This requires mobilizing revenues to finance development spending and support reforms in the product, labor and financial markets.” In its recent annual review of
Indonesia’s policies, the Fund said the government should focus on financing infrastructure with domestic revenue in order to avoid a build-up of external debt. Lagarde, whose visit comes two decades after a painful IMF bail-out imposed harsh austerity on Indonesia, praised the country’s greatly expanded health care system during a hospital visit. Widodo also took her shopping at a crowded Jakarta textiles mar-
ket, along with Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The IMF chief on Tuesday will participate in an economic conference , featuring central bankers and other officials from ASEAN countries, focused on new growth models and adjusting to rapidly changing technologies. Piling Kawan Hot Spring, New Tourist Attraction in Tabanan TABANAN - When talking about hot springs (yeh panes), Tabanan district has many to consider. There have been a number of host spring objects in operation such as ESPA Yeh Panes Natural Hot Springs Spa & Resort at Penatahan village, Yeh Panes Belulang at Belulang village, Yeh Panes Angsri at Angsri village as well as Yeh Panes Piling at Piling Kawan village, precisely at Subak Uma Desa, Taman Sari, Piling Kawan village, Penebel subdistrict. Arrangement and management of the new tourist attraction is entrusted to his son, Wayan Mediastra, in accordance with tourism management. Piling hot spring now has a pentagon-shaped pond sizing 5 x 5 meters and a depth of 120 cm. In addition, there are five showers having natural materials and atmosphere. “People who usually bathe at this location can calm down the mind and soak to treat skin diseases,” he explained. This supporting facilities available include three spacious bathrooms (include changing room). Meanwhile, the management of this hot spring pool was just established three months ago. This area continues to be arranged, so that it
looks more beautiful. Cool nature and clean area is embellished with beautiful plants. “Most visitors bathing in this place are local people, but there are also foreign tourists. Turkey sends special forces for next stage of Afrin offensive
ANKARA - Turkey deployed police special forces to the northwestern Syrian region of Afrin on Monday for a “new battle” in its five-week campaign against the Kurdish YPG militia, despite a U.N. call at the weekend for a ceasefire across Syria. WASHINGTON - The National Rifle Association pushed back on Sunday against modest proposals by President Donald Trump and other Republicans to change U.S. gun laws after a school shooting in Florida that killed 17 students and staff. The powerful gun lobby group does not support Trump’s proposals to raise the age limit for buying certain types of guns and to ban bump stocks that enable semi-automatic rifles to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute, a spokeswoman said on ABC’s “This Week.” “The NRA doesn’t back any ban,” Dana Loesch said. Smuggling of drugs has reached alarming level: House speaker JAKARTA - Attempts to smuggle large quantities of drugs repeatedly into the country had reached an unprecedented level, House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo stated. “I urge the police to thoroughly investigate the syndicates of drug networks operating in Indonesia,” Soesatyo noted in a written statement in Jakarta on Saturday. Soesatyo made the statement in response to the attempt to smuggle in three tons of meth aboard a Taiwanese-flagged fishing boat from Myanmar in the waters of the Riau Islands of Sumatra. This attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of meth was thwarted by the Riau Islands Customs Team. Soesatyo also lauded the Riau Islands Customs Team that had successfully foiled the efforts to smuggle three tons of meth, locally known as sabu-sabu. The House Speaker said the Chinese intelligence had provided information to the National Narcotics Agency on the attempt to smuggle meth into Indonesia. According to the information, some five tons of meth worth Rp10 trillion was to be smuggled into Indonesia. The first attempt to smuggle one ton of the illegal drug was earlier foiled in the waters of Batam, Riau Island Province. The second consignment of 1.6 tons was also seized in the waters of Batam last week, and the third catch of three tons was confiscated on Friday (Feb 23) in the waters of Batam Island. Soesatyo called on the police to take legal action, not only against the crew members who served only as couriers but also against drug lords. “Legal action must be taken not only against the crew members but also against those behind the syndicate,” Soesatyo emphasized. Earlier, a Singapore-flagged ship, allegedly carrying 1.6 tons of methamphetamine, was seized by Indonesia`s customs officers in Anambas waters of Riau Islands. The vessel, with four Chinese crews, carried the illegal drugs in 81 sacks, with each sack containing 20 kilograms of meth, Antara reported here on Tuesday. The ship was detained near Sekupang Port. The police are yet to provide further information on the arrest, while Riau Islands police chief Inspector General Didid W did not comment. Besides that, the Indonesian navy has also stated that it had seized a fishing vessel carrying one ton of crystal methamphetamine off Batam waters early this month. The drugs were smuggled in 41 rice sacks, and the boat MV Sunrise Glory, which was flying a Singapore flag, was operated by Taiwanese crew members. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s biggest political party in parliament on Friday endorsed President Joko Widodo as its candidate for elections in 2019, joining four other parties backing him for a second term. The presidential election is widely expected to be a re-run of a 2014 vote with Widodo taking on retired general Prabowo Subianto of the opposition Gerindra (Greater Indonesia Movement) party.
“I hearby state that the PDIP presidential candidate is Joko Widodo,” Megawati Sukarnoputri, chairwoman of the nationalist Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) party, said in a video from the party’s congress on the island of Bali. JAKARTA - International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Monday called on Indonesia to boost its potential growth rate and channel revenues to more development spending to help create jobs for its growing labor force. After meeting with President Joko Widodo at the start of a weeklong trip to Indonesia, Lagarde praised the country’s economic management and stronger policies.
“Indonesia’s economy continues to prove resilient with a sound economic performance and favorable outlook,” she said in a statement issued after the meeting. But in recent years, Indonesia has struggled to get its growth rate to exceed 5 percent, well below the pace of China and India, amid tepid consumer demand and foreign direct investment. GDP growth failed to meet the government’s 5.2 percent budget
target last year and the IMF is forecasting that Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, will grow by 5.3 percent in 2018. Lagarde said she and Widodo discussed the importance of achieving higher potential growth to help create jobs, adding “This requires mobilizing revenues to finance development spending and support reforms in the product, labor and financial markets.” In its recent annual review of
Indonesia’s policies, the Fund said the government should focus on financing infrastructure with domestic revenue in order to avoid a build-up of external debt. Lagarde, whose visit comes two decades after a painful IMF bail-out imposed harsh austerity on Indonesia, praised the country’s greatly expanded health care system during a hospital visit. Widodo also took her shopping at a crowded Jakarta textiles mar-
ket, along with Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The IMF chief on Tuesday will participate in an economic conference , featuring central bankers and other officials from ASEAN countries, focused on new growth models and adjusting to rapidly changing technologies. U.S. trying to “embarrass” Pakistan with terror financing list - minister
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s de facto finance minister, Miftah Ismail, has brushed off concerns that economic growth will suffer because of the country’s re-inclusion on a terrorist financing watch list, and lashed out against the United States for seeking to “embarrass” his nation. Washington last week persuaded member states of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to place Pakistan back on the “grey list” of nations with inadequate terrorist financing or money laundering controls. Pakistan was on the list for three years, until 2015.
The diplomatic setback has sparked anger in Islamabad against United States, which championed the motion against Pakistan at the FATF meeting in Paris. It represented another blow to the worsening relationship between the uneasy allies, who have long differed on how to combat Islamist militants waging war in Afghanistan. It has also heightened concerns that Pakistan is becoming internationally isolated, and that its economy could suffer if global banking intuitions cut links with the nuclear-armed nation, or otherwise increase the cost of doing business with Pakistan. Ismail, officially the adviser on finance, revenue and economic affairs to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, led Pakistan’s negotiations in Paris. He told Reuters that Washington did not seem genuinely eager to see Pakistan boost its terrorist financing regulations and was instead bent on humiliating the country. “If the Americans were interested in working with us and improving our CTF (counter-terrorist financing) regulations, they would have taken the offer I was making them,” Ismail said. “But their idea was just to embarrass Pakistan.” Diplomatic and Pakistani government sources say Pakistan fended off a U.S.-led motion on Tuesday as Turkey, China and the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) countries objected to it. But in a break from tradition, the motion was brought up again on Thursday and passed as the GCC and China dropped their objections. Ismail said that he urged the United States to allow Pakistan until June to fix any outstanding CTF issues and ceded ground in negotiations to strike a deal, but that the U.S. was determined to see Pakistan suffer. These students studied for ten days and practiced for 2.5 hours a day. They know the Kakul Mas Dance Studio from his father, the late I Ketut Kantor. One of their lecturers had learned mask dance directly from the late I Ketut Kantor. Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor. These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In practicing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan. The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan. “Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal account,” he said.

North Bali is truly wealthy when it comes to traditional cultural practices that have been passed down uninterrupted for countless generations. One example is the tradition known as ‘nyakan diwang’ that the people of Catur Desa Adat Dalem Tamblingan, Umajero Village, Gobleg, Munduk, Gesing continue to practice. Nyakan Diwang essentially means ‘cooking by the side of the road’ and this tradition manages to strengthen the peace and harmony amongst the people who practice it. The process begins anywhere between midnight and dawn. Head of the Traditional Village of Munduk, Jro Putu Ardana, explained on Thursday (Mar 3) that the nyakan diwang tradition is part of the ‘Ngembak Geni’ celebrations that take place the day after the Holy Day of Nyepi (day of Silence). The people of Catur Desa Adat Dalem Tamblingan, and surrounding area feel their relations and communications thus become more intense and believe strongly in the power of nyakan diwang to give rise to a strong sense of community. “This tradition is related to Nyepi and so local residents will cook their food outside their house before bringing it inside. While they are cooking, their communication with their neighbors is woven into harmony as they exchange recipes. The value of togetherness is thus passed down from generation to generation with a feeling of peace and harmony. During this activity there is no separation among people and great joy is taken in tasting each others food” said Ardana. Umajero Busungbiu Village public figure, I Nyoman Arya, added that the nyakan diwang tradition has been well guarded by the people of this village since long ago. “The people of Gobleg, Umajero, Munduk, Gesing and other villages in the area have passed

down this tradition from generation to generation. Starting at midnight people are already getting ready to start cooking’’ he said. The tradition of nyakan diwang’s meaning is philosophically related to a manifestation of the sense of gratitude towards Creator for having provided blessings, abundance, safety and peace. “We do this to show our gratitude and every year we have been blessed with ease in conducting this activity”, added Arya. Durign Nyepi, just like other Balinese, people here honor the four abstinences; amatigeni (no lighting of fire or lamps), amati lelanguan (no sensory pleasure), amatilelungan (no traveling/walking around), dan amatikarya (no work). Through the nyakan diwang tradition as people gather outside their homes, they enjoy a friendly atmosphere and it is no surprise that they exchange friendly greetings. This type of activity truly strengthens the peace and harmony of the community. “By cooking together on the street, a feeling of togetherness arises and people naturally greet each other. This activity -that takes place right after Nyepi, helps to safeguard togetherness” emphasised Arya. Cooking implements such as makeshift hearths made of stone or brick are made ready for the dry wood that will be used as fuel for the fire. Mornings in the mountain are cold so the first thing that people prepare is hot water for coffee or tea. Then they start cooking rice and other dishes. “While enjoying the atmosphere of the early morning, local residents prepare their meals over the course of an hour or two. Once everything is cooked, the food is brought inside to be enjoyed by the family. Another aspect of this unique tradition is the exchanging of recipes with neighbours” he said. (kmb)

WELLINGTON - At least one company began evacuating nonessential personnel after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Papua New Guinea’s energy-rich interior on Monday, causing landslides, damaging buildings and closing oil and gas operations. The tremor hit in the rugged, heavily forested Southern Highlands about 560 km (350 miles) northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, at around 3.45 a.m. local time (1545 GMT Sunday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). A spokesman at Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Centre said by telephone the affected area was very remote and the agency could not properly assess damage until communication was re-established. He said there were no confirmed casualties, although the International Red Cross (IRC) in Papua New Guinea said some reports indicated there were “fears of human casualties”. “It’s a very serious all across the Southern Highlands and also all over the western highlands. People are definitely very frightened,” Udaya Regmi, the head of the IRC in Papua New Guinea, said by telephone from Port Moresby. The PNG government also said it had sent disaster assessment teams.
At least 13 aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.0 or more rattled the area throughout the day, according to USGS data, but no tsunami warnings were issued. “The Papua New Guinea Defence Force has also been mobilised to assist with the assessment and the delivery of assistance to affected people as well as the restoration of services and infrastructure,” Isaac Lupari, the chief secretary to the government, said in a statement. DILI - East Timor and Australia have reached an agreement for a treaty on their disputed maritime border and on a “pathway” to develop the giant Greater Sunrise offshore gas fields, the Permanent Court of Arbitration said on Monday. Under the agreement, the share of revenue from the offshore gas field will differ depending on downstream benefits that arise from “different development concepts”, the statement said following talks in Kuala Lumpur. The agreement would establish a maritime boundary in the Timor Sea for the first time. Australia had sought a boundary aligned with its continental shelf, but East Timor argued the border should lie half way between it and Australia - placing much of the Greater Sunrise fields under its control. The long-running dispute had led the owners of Greater Sunrise Woodside Petroleum, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell and Japan’s Osaka Gas - to shelve the project. The fields are estimated to hold 5.1 trillion cubic feet of gas and
226 million barrels of condensates, which analysts have previously estimated could be worth $40 billion. However, development could be at least a decade away, with Woodside looking at the latter half of the next decade. Ending years of opposition, Australia agreed in 2017 to accept Dili’s formal notice to terminate an agreement to split petroleum revenue equally from Greater Sunrise and set a 50-year timetable for negotiating a permanent sea boundary. Dili had taken the long-running maritime border dispute to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, an intergovernmental organisation based at The Hague, which ordered compulsory arbitration between the two parties. The court announced last year that the countries had reached an agreement “on the central elements of a maritime boundary delimitation between them in the Timor Sea” – but that details would remain confidential until the deal was finalised. Primitive art: Neanderthals were Europe’s first painters
LONDON - The world’s oldest known cave paintings were made by Neanderthals, not modern humans, suggesting our extinct cousins were far from being uncultured brutes. A high-tech analysis of cave art at three Spanish sites, published on Thursday, dates the paintings to at least 64,800 years ago, or 20,000 years before modern humans arrived in Europe from Africa. That makes the cave art much older than previously thought and provides the strongest evidence yet that Neanderthals had the cognitive capacity to understand symbolic representation, a central pillar of human culture. “What we’ve got here is a smoking gun that really overturns the notion that Neanderthals were knuckle-dragging cavemen,” said Alistair Pike, professor of archaeological sciences at the University of Southampton, who co-led the study. “Painting is something that has always been seen as a very human activity, so if Neanderthals are doing it they are being just like us,”
he told Reuters. While some archaeologists already viewed Neanderthals as more sophisticated than their commonplace caricature, the evidence until now has been inconclusive. With the data from the three Spanish cave sites described in the journal Science, Pike and colleagues believe they finally have rock-solid proof. The early cave art at La Pasiega, Maltravieso and Ardales includes lines, dots, discs and hand stencils - and creating them would have involved specific skills, such as mixing pigments and selecting appropriate display locations. The Neanderthals living in the same land that would one day give birth to Diego Velazquez and Pablo Picasso also needed the intellectual ability to think symbolically, like modern humans. Scientists used a precise dating system based on the radioactive decay of uranium isotopes into thorium to assess the age of the paintings. This involved scraping a few milligrams of calcium carbonate deposit from the paintings for
analysis. A second related study published in Science Advances found that dyed and decorated marine shells from a different Spanish cave also dated back to pre-human times. Taken together, the researchers said their work suggested that Neanderthals were “cognitively indistinguishable” from early modern humans. Joao Zilhao of the University of Barcelona said the new findings meant the search for the origins of human cognition needed to go back to the common ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans more than 500,000 years ago. Neanderthals died out about 40,000 years ago, soon after direct ancestors arrived in Europe. It is unclear what killed them off, although theories include an inability to adapt to climate change and increased competition from modern humans. If they were still alive today, Pike believes they could well have gone on develop complex art and technology. (rtr)

The number of tourists visiting the country rose 54 percent to 8.3 million last year, still below the 14.7 million who came in 2010. Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the scarab charm with the new year greeting had been unearthed last New Year’s Eve in a “wonderful coincidence”. “This is a message sent to us from the afterlife,” he said. Chairman of the Commission for Business Competition Supervision (KPPU), Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf, revealed that rice stock of Bulog per January reached 780,000-800,000 tons. Ideally, Bulog rice supplies reach 1 million tons. So, the stock shortage is only around 200,000 tons. “Such deficiency indicates that we are not confident in our ability to keep our rice supply. Then, it is supplied with import of 500,000 tons, though in reality the import is only 260,000 tons. Besides, it is not distributed to the market but stored in Bulog warehouses,” he said not long ago. Based on the data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the rice consumption of Indonesian reaches 30 million tons per year. The data also show the rice production reaches 41 million tons while the USDA data show 37 million tons. If the data are correct, Indonesia should have surplus of rice. “So, Bulog should be reformed why Bulog is not able to absorb the rice of farmers. If all this time Bulog buys rice from farmers, in the future it must also absorb grain from farmers,” he concluded. The existing mechanisms in Bulog must be changed, so that Bulog has the ability to absorb grain. Bulog has milling machine, storage and drying machines. Thus, Bulog does not just absorb rice from farmers. “As long as the pattern is still like the current condition and there is no change, we will not be able to achieve self-sufficiency in rice,” he said while mentioning that regarding the rice matter Indonesia no longer imported rice in 2017. Bulog argued it could not absorb grain of farmers
because the grain price is above the government standard price (HPP) reaching above IDR 3,700 per kg whereas from February to August belonged to massive harvest. At that time, the price of grain dropped and farmers usually suffered losses so that Bulog should absorb the grain of farmers during the period. “If Bulog is targeted to absorb 3.7 million tons of grain, it should be filled with 50 percent in February to August. So far, Bulog does not do this effectively,” he added. Therefore, other than purchasing rice, Bulog should also purchase the grain of farmers. Bulog also needs to make improvements by repairing the warehouse and modernization of rice milling machine. Bulog must invest to buy rice drying machine in cooperation with farmer groups. By that way, Bulog can be a guarantor for farmers when they want to access capital to the bank. The price of unhulled grain is cheap. To increase the selling price, the grain must be dried. Head of Bulog for Bali Regional Division, Wahyu Sutanto, said this year Bulog is targeting rice absorption in Bali at 2,500 tons. Until now, only 155 tons can be absorbed. The target until the end of February 2018 is 200 tons. Then, in March he hoped to absorb more. The target of 2,500 tons of rice is the same as last year. Meanwhile, the achievement of absorption last year reached 1,300 tons or 11 percent of the target because the absorption is not maximal due to the rice price exceeding the standard price of the government. On that account, in 2018 Bulog will absorb farmers’ rice for commercial rice. Based on experience, Bulog is unable to absorb farmers’ rice for PSO. “Then, it is used for commercial purposes meaning that if we can buy and we must also be able to sell,” he said not long ago. Overall the target of absorption reaches 2,500 tons for commercial. Unfortunately, Bulog is reluctant to mention the price of commercial rice purchased from farmers. (kmb42)

DENPASAR - The conclusion of the international conference on local language held at Udayana University’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) recently was that the rescue and preservation of local languages requires vivacious and sustainable action. Researcher and lecturer from Cendrawasih University, Adolfina Krisifu, conveyed three main measures that can be implemented to supoort local languages: research by academic groups whose results can be given to the government to develop real policies and programs, the use of local language in various domains such as education, religious activities and encouraging use at the family level. A representative from Tadulako University, Ulinsa, conveyed that the use of relevant technology can be used to help support local languages. Local folkloric tales for example can be presented in animations to attract the attention of children and young people. “We must not only let our children know Japanese comics”, said Ulinsa. Maria Matildis Banda from Udayana University said that the wealth of vocabulary and interesting concepts inhering in local language can be adopted into literary works. This, she said can revive the language. “It is important that sustainable measures be taken to examine local language so that its grammar can continue to be learned in the future”, said this novelist who also lectures on Indonesian Literature at Unud’s FIB. Banda suggested that the artists and writers should be given a space to liven up the rescue of local languages. She pointed out that there are fewer and fewer living spaces for artists, speakers and writers of minor local languages. Many of these languages lack a literary tradition and have few speakers so without a living space for the language to thrive, it is very hard to preserve. A representative from Hassanuddin University, Arga Maulana Pasanrangi, conveyed a similar opinion saying that local languages can be supported by having more performing arts presentations in these languages so that more people can appreciate the language. “ The government and the public play important roles in this matter”, he added. Professor from Udayan University’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, said that Bali is a very appropriate place to host an international conference of local languages because Bali has been able to maintain its mother tongue quite well. Balinese people are always enthusiastic about preserving and practicing the Balinese language as well as their cultural practices which are the basis of their identity. “In Bali, literature, performing arts, et cetera are all well developed in harmony with the Balinese language”, said Darma Putra who delivered his paper entitled “Medium of Modernity to Balinese Language in the Contemporary Literary Landscape”. Chairperson of the Local Language Conference Committee 2018, Ida Ayu Laksmita Sari, said that the local language conference was very inspiring. In a career spanning five decades, Sridevi acted in 300 films and was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour in 2013. Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, she started acting at the age of four, appearing in several Tamillanguage films in the 1960s and 1970s, and eventually dropping out of school for a career in the movies. Sridevi made her Bollywood debut in 1979 with “Solva Sawan” (16th spring), but it was in 1983, with Balu Mahendra’s “Sadma” (Shock) that she made her mark in
the Hindi film industry. The year, she also acted with Jeetendra in K. Raghavendra Rao’s blockbuster “Himmatwala” (The courageous one), cementing her place as one of Bollywood’s top actresses. Through the 1980s and 1990s she charmed audiences in femalecentric films such as “Chandni” (Moonlight) and “Lamhe” (Moments), drawing praise for her comic timing in “Chaalbaaz” (Trickster) and Shekhar Kapur’s “Mr India”, playing feisty characters in contrast to the traditionally coy Bollywood heroine. Sridevi took a break from films soon after she married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996. A noticeably leaner Sridevi made a successful return to the big screen 15 years later in Gauri Shinde’s “English Vinglish” (2012), playing a housewife taking English-language lessons. Her last screen appearance was in “Mom” (2017), as a mother avenging her daughter’s rape. ‘Black Panther’ Rules With $108 Million in Second Weekend
LOS ANGELES - Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” is dominating the box office with an astounding $108 million at 4,020 North American locations -- the second-highest second weekend ever behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” “Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman, has now grossed $400 million domestically in its first 10 days. Only “The Force Awakens” has reached that milestone faster. It’s also grossed $304 million internationally. The superhero film, the 18th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, declined only 46 percent from its opening Friday-Sunday -- underlining the film’s massive appeal among moviegoers. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” set the second weekend record with $149 million in 2015, and “Black Panther” topped the second weekends of 2015’s “Jurassic World” at $106.6 million, and 2012’s “The Avengers” with $103 million. “Black Panther,” directed by Ryan Coogler, has caught on with
moviegoers this month in a way that few other titles have in Hollywood’s recent history -- blowing past last month’s tracking that showed it would open in the $100 million to $120 million range. It’s notched an A+ Cinemascore -- becoming only the second Marvel film to do so -- and has dazzled critics with a 97 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya and Letitia Wright. ComScore’s PostTrack scores of the audience for the second weekend show support among moviegoers far above average with 69 percent rating the film as “excellent” and another 23 percent as “very good.” And it’s done so outside the traditional sum-
mer and holiday season corridors for blockbusters, noted Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore. “’Black Panther’ continues to elevate the month of February to summer-style blockbuster status with a second weekend that represents only the third time that a film has posted a $100 million plus weekend performance during the month (behind only its $202 million debut and ‘Deadpool’s’ $132 million opening in 2016),” he said. “And with a North American cume through Sunday of $400 million, it is the highest grossing film ever released in the month after just 10 days in theaters beating the long-standing $370.3 million record held by 2004’s ‘The Passion of The Christ.’” (rtr)

Jakarta’s Christian ex-governor challenges blasphemy conviction
JAKARTA - Jakarta’s former governor, a Christian convicted of insulting Islam, sought a judicial review of his case on Monday, as several hundred of his supporters and hardline Islamist protesters gathered outside a court in the Indonesian capital. The ethnic Chinese Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly known as “Ahok”, was jailed for two years for blasphemy in 2017, provoking international condemnation amid concerns of political motivation after Islamist-led rallies demanded his imprisonment. Purnama’s request for a judi-
cial review will be passed on to the Supreme Court, a judge at a lower court hearing said. “We have completed the examination and the dossiers will
be sent to the Supreme Court,” said Judge Mulyadi, one of a panel of judges at the North Jakarta court. While on a work trip in 2016, Purnama said political rivals were deceiving people by using a verse in the Koran to say Muslims should not be led by a non-Muslim. Continued to page 6
