NEW YORK — Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested early Thursday after he allegedly got into an altercation with another man outside a New York City museum where he has been chanting “He will not divide us” in front of a live camera since Donald Trump’s inauguration. Police said LaBeouf pulled the scarf of an unidentified 25-year-old man outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, scratching his face in the process. They said he also pushed the man, who refused medical attention. LaBeouf has spent the first few days of Trump’s presidency swaying, dancing and repeating the phrase “He will not divide us” in front of
a live camera outside the museum. The livestream is for a participatory public art project LaBeouf and two collaborators intend to have running 24 hours a day for the next four years. The camera went live the morning of the inauguration, along with a website inviting the public to show up and participate. LeBeouf has been a frequent, though not constant presence.
Technically, the project from LaBeouf and his performance art partners isn’t about opposition to Trump, LaBeouf told The Associated Press in an interview conducted on Monday in front of the livestream camera. “We’re anti-division out here. Everyone’s invited,” LaBeouf said. “I’m just saying, ‘Be nice to each other.’” It’s not immediately known what led to the alleged altercation Thursday morning. LaBeouf faces a misdemeanor assault charge. It’s unclear if he has an attorney who can comment. (ap)

Trump’s call for probe of voter fraud sparks backlash
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would seek an investigation into what he believes was voter fraud in last November’s election, despite an overwhelming consensus among state officials, election experts, and politicians that it is rare in the United States. The announcement drew rebukes from both Republicans and Democrats who said the Republican president’s unsubstantiated claims of large-scale fraud could undermine voting rights efforts as well as confidence in the new U.S. chief executive. In the Nov. 8 election, Trump lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton by nearly 3 million
ballots. Irked by that large figure, he has blamed voter fraud without citing evidence. “I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and....even, those registered to vote who are dead (and many for a long time),” Trump said on Twitter. “Depending on results, we will
strengthen up voting procedures!” In an interview with ABC News, Trump said none of the illegal votes would have been cast for him. “They would all be for the other side,” he said. White House press secretary Sean Spicer later told a news briefing that the probe would not focus on only the 2016 election. Three Democratic congressmen demanded proof of such fraud and sent a letter to election officials and attorneys general in all 50 U.S. states seeking examples of cases of fraud in November’s vote. Many of the state officials did
not need prompting with election officers in several states rejecting Trump’s claims immediately. “Easy to vote, hard to cheat #Ohio,” Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, Jon Husted, said in a Twitter post rebutting Trump’s claim that 3 million to 5 million illegal immigrants voted against him. “That’s impossible,” Democratic Secretary of State Alex Padilla of California said on CNN. There is no history of widespread voter fraud in U.S. elections. Leading Republicans, including the top Republican in Congress, House
of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, have rejected the claims. Due to lack of facilities, Paksebali village, Dawan, must spend enough money to provide adequate facilities. Headman of Paksebali, I Putu Ariadi, conveyed that he with the village community of Paksebali begins to open trekking path in the hills of local village. The path passes through three hills namely the Mandaean, Tangkib Putih and Bukit Mas Hill that showcase natural landscapes of paddy fields and Mount Agung. Besides, visitors will be able to see the view of the ocean along with the Island of Nusa Penida. Trekking that passes the hills also crosses pristine river. According to Putu Ariadi, to open the trekking path it takes him for weeks considering that the pathway is
rarely passed through by the public and covered with shrubs. After opening the trekking path, Paksebali village plans to set up a rest area in the form of gazebo for travelers participating in the trekking. The presence of trekking at Paksebali hills will strengthen the position of the village into tourism village. Aside from trekking path, his village has arranged the area of Unda River into water attraction. With the village fund worth IDR 300 million, the Paksebali village builds a restaurant that will be managed by village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) of Paksebali. With the existence of the restaurant, he hoped that rafting entrepreneurs can re-use the area as the finish line in the whitewater rafting adventure. In addition, the village has made cooperation with travel agencies to take advantage of the restaurant such as the lunch venue for travelers visiting Klungkung. Additionally, he hoped the support of the government of Klungkung to promote the tourist attraction and take advantage of the restaurant as the venue of meeting activities held by the government. However, they also put food offerings at cemetery. Along with the changing times, is there any change as well to the tradition? Hindu devotees in Buleleng town that celebrated Pagerwesi feast have already looked busy from early morning. Coinciding with the rising sun, they have conducted prayers. Hectic atmosphere is similar to the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan. Besides, the feast falling every six months (210 days) looks so different from the other areas. Devotees do not only put offerings at their clan temple and universal temple, but there is also a tradition having been carried from generation to generation in the form of putting offerings for the deceased family. It is carried out at cemetery. Presenting food offerings or munjung is followed by all members of the family. The offerings brought as usual are put over the grave looking in a neat row with a variety of sizes and accompanied with the worship procession. This tradition is not only performed on Pagerwesi, but also on Galungan and Kuningan. For sure, he does not understand what it signifies. “I do not know what it exactly means. We’ve inherited the tradition like this. At least, it is also a part of effort to maintain relationship. We must remember both the living and dead ones,” he said when met at Buleleng cemetery on Wednesday (Jan. 25). In the 1980s, continued this middle-aged man, presentation of food offerings is usually done starting at 04:00. At that time, the atmosphere is very pronounced. Both the adult and children also joined the procession at the cemetery. In addition to the offerings, they also brought candles and fireworks. However, when entering the era of the 1990s to the present, such an atmosphere starts to fade. “Since then, no longer people are lighting candles. People just put the offerings. The atmosphere is no longer festive as ever before,” he said. He added that in the past this tradition took place before saying prayers at clan temple and universal temple but now it is reversed. “Today, it is held at home first and then come here. Narcotic case in Bali, BNNP Bali rehabilitates 974 people
AMLAPURA - Narcotic still becomes a big threat to Bali. Data of the Bali Provincial National Narcotic Agency (BNNP) indicate that throughout the year 2016, there were 974 people that should follow narcotic rehabilitation because they get involved in it. They mostly come from private sector, unemployment and self-employed people. However, there are also pupils, college students and housewives. Head of the BNNP Bali, I Putu Gede Suastawa, said on Tuesday (Jan. 24) that the total number of people following the rehabilitation signifies that the war against the hazards of narcotic should not recede. In a note of the BNNP Bali, the data of rehabilitation in 2016 in terms of profession show that 510 people or 52.36 percent are from private sector, the unemployed (222 people) or 22.79 percent and the self-employed (156 people) or 16.02 percent. There are also pupil (21), college students (17), merchants (14), farmers (8), police (6), civil servant (5), artists (5), fishermen (4), retired people (3) and housewives (3). As the mapping out by the BNNP Bali, the entry of narcotic passes several entrances such as the crossing of Gilimanuk Harbor, Celukan Bawang, Ngurah Rai Airport, Benoa Harbor, Sanur Beach, Nusa Penida, Padangbai Harbor and several traditional ports in Karangasem such as at Tulamben, Amed and a couple of coastlines in
Kubu subdistrict. In the past year, the drug cases occurred evenly throughout the district and municipal in Bali. Data as of September 2016 showed that the highest drug case was uncovered in Denpasar with 198 cases, followed by Buleleng (35), Jembrana (32), Gianyar (31), Badung (27), Bangli (18), Klungkung (14), Tabanan (12) and Karangasem (7). “The data of the case is small, but do not necessarily mean there are no drugs. It precisely happens because disclosure effort is not serious enough. Actually, it can reach more than this,” he said. Seeing the urgency of the problem on drug abuse, then his agency is very encouraging to immediately form BNNK in Karangasem. Thus, the handling will be more intensive in the field. Besides, the most worrying thing for the BNNP Bali is the trend of drug cases among the students. Therefore, to face this situation, Suastawa hoped the P4GN integrated curriculum program can provide significant influences on the students. This program was launched in June 2016 coinciding with the International Day against Drugs. At junior high school level, the curriculum is inserted into the subjects like religion, social sciences, Bahasa Indonesia, civics as well as physical and sport education. Then, at the level of high school it is inserted into civics, history, Bahasa Indonesian and physical and sport education. (kmb31)
Advisor to central executive of the Indonesian Hotel General Manager Association (IHGMA), Dr. Gusti Kade Sutawa, said that although the regional occupancy in general is about 50 percent, the hotels directly facing the beach surely become a priority for tourists to stay,” he said on Tuesday (Jan. 24). But according to him, a lot of things need to be considered, especially for Bali. First of all, the infrastructures connecting South Bali to East, West and North Bali should be arranged, so that tourism is not only concentrated in South Bali. “Now, we’ve been faced with traffic congestion down here,” he said. Secondly, the waste management having been often at issue must get a solution from the government and the parliament. In addition, the blueprint of Bali tourism should be made clear for the sustainability of Bali tourism ahead. “Thus, our grandchildren later on will inherit a sustainable tourism, not sporadically, not build here and there without a good plan,” he said. Bali needs to emulate other countries. Although Bali is an island, it is inappropriate to be compared to
a country, but Bali needs to learn, for example, from Malaysia. “Malaysia is a small country, but it has regional planning for the next 50 years. There has been a picture of Malaysia how it will look like and it was made by an Indonesian,” he said. According to him, Bali has the capacity for that, so that what is needed is good will and political will of the government so that the experts or stakeholders can give their contribution to promote Bali tourism. Indeed, recently the foreign tourist visit showed an increase, especially Chinese tourists. Unfortunately, the hotel revenue received is not comparable to the number of foreign tourist arrivals that make the room rate cheap. Cheap price happens in line with the law of economics, the laws of the market. “Now, we are oversupply due to many hotel rooms. When compared to the room rate in 1980s in the range of USD 200-USD 300, now we can even get IDR 300,000. Indeed, it directs to quality,” he explained. On that account, the government should control the growth of hotels in Bali. “There should not be too many rooms and there should be research on accommodation supply. We may not let the oversupply of hotel room happen as it currently does,” he added. If it can be controlled through hotel moratorium, then in the upcoming 5 to 10 years, room rates will increase and traffic congestion can be reduced. (kmb42)

Due to the recent rains, the tourist visit to one of the attractions in Bangli, namely Penglipuran village, shows a decline. Operations manager of Penglipuran tourist attraction, I Nengah Moneng, said on Wednesday (Jan. 25) that persistent heavy rains in Bangli and surrounding areas in recent weeks have caused the tourist visits to Penglipuran village to decrease. However, the decline is not very significant. “The decline in tourist visit is certain. However, I did not know
the percentage for sure because I have not checked it yet. Clearly, there is a decrease but not too significant,” explained Nengah Moneng. Moneng added the declining tourist visits happened to domestic travelers, primarily of Balinese teenagers. The visit of foreign tourist is relatively normal, although there is a decline of one to two people. “The most visible decline
is in the Bali local tourist visit. By and large, teenagers will make a visit in hot weather. Since it rained recently, the tourist visit declined slightly,” he said. He said that tourist visit will usually return to normal after feast holiday. He said that possibly after Ciwaratri feast the tourist visits will be back to normal. “Normally, after Ciwaratri more visitors will usually come. Hopefully, the weather also supports so that tourist visit will constantly increase. The number of tourist visit will determine our revenue,” added Nengah Moneng. (kmb41)

While there is no formal definition of the term “sanctuary city,” it generally refers to jurisdictions that do not cooperate with federal immigration officials. In some cases, these cities tell
police not to inquire about the immigration status of those they encounter, or they decline requests from immigration officials to keep defendants in custody while they await deportation. Others say they do cooperate with such “detainer” requests as long as they’re backed by court-issued warrants, but won’t allow local officers to enforce federal immigration law. Advocates say such noncooperation policies protect people who may not have exhausted their rights to apply for U.S. residency. BEIJING - Profits for China’s industrial firms rose the most in three years in 2016 as a construction boom fueled a rally in prices of building materials from steel to cement, giving companies more flexibility to start chipping away at a mountain of debt.
Strong profit growth of 8.5 percent last year suggests there may be a solid pick-up in industrial investment in 2017, though many analysts still expect China’s overall economic growth to cool to around 6.5 percent this year from 6.7 percent in 2016. Industrial profits fell 2.3 percent in 2015. Profits in December rose 2.3 percent from a year earlier to 844.4 billion yuan ($122.76 billion), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Thursday, slowing sharply from growth of 14.5 percent in November. But the earnings recovery remained uneven across the industrial sector, with coal miners and processors such as steel mills and oil refiners continuing to see sharper gains than other firms. Profits in the coal mining sector surged 223.6 percent in 2016, while those for iron and steel production and processing companies rose 232.3 percent. Baoshan Iron and Steel (Baosteel) said last week that it expected its net profit to rise 770 percent in 2016 from a year earlier. Baosteel Group is taking over rival Wuhan Steel to create the world’s second-largest steelmaker, in the government’s biggest effort yet to consolidate its fragmented steel industry. China’s stock market investors have cashed in on the industrial revival. An index tracking the industrial sector has risen around 22 percent since June 2016 and reached a 10-1/2-month high in November.

was crowded with worshippers and some foreigners on vacation. The damaged roads of Perasai Village had to be passed as each family carried their offerings of rice patties, chicken and seafood. The offerings were being brought to the sea and offered to Lord Baruna with prayers for safety and peace fro the universe. One after the other, people gave their prayers and presented their offereings on the eastern coastline, they took a rest in the shade of the thousands of coconut trees that line the beach. This beach, that is
normally quite empty, was suddenly filled with people on what looked like a large communal picnic. This sort of sight is quite common anytime Balinese Hindus perform melasti processions. “The atmosphere is a bit like a holiday” said one of devotees named Ni Luh Putu Widnyani. However unlike most other villages in Bali that perform their melasti, rites in one fell swoop with villagers bringing their own offerings and sanctified effigies being carried in the same procession – whether to the beach, river lake or other source of water, Timbrah villagers bring their own offerings first while the sanctified village temple effigies are carried later at around 2PM. Facebook’s Zuckerberg ‘reconsidering’ land sale actions against Hawaiians
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he is reconsidering efforts to force the sale of land tracts belonging to native Hawaiians that fall within a large estate he bought on the island of Kauai, after facing harsh criticism.
Zuckerberg filed what are known as quiet title actions to secure parcels of land within his seafront property on the island of Kauai. The quiet title system is used to establish ownership of land where inheritance has occurred over generations and lacks formal documentation, and to force sale. “Based on feedback from the local community, we are reconsidering the quiet title process and discussing how to move forward,” Zuckerberg said in a statement on Tuesday night. “We want to make sure we are following a process that protects the interests of property owners, respects the traditions of native Hawaiians, and preserves the environment,” he added. Hawaii state representative Kaniela Ing, who in response to the controversy introduced a bill mandating mediation in such actions involving native Hawaiians
and likened Zuckerberg’s plans to those of sugar barons who took land from native Hawaiians in the 1800s, said he was heartened by the news. “I mahalo Mr. Zuckerberg for his words of aloha and willingness to talk,” Ing said in a statement on Wednesday. He then urged the social media executive to drop the legal actions, support a local legal organization, and “join us at the table to restart a positive dialog as mutual stewards of land and culture.” Zuckerberg’s statement comes just days after he posted on his Facebook an explanation of his Hawaii plans, as news of the actions drew headlines and anger. He said in the post the estate is made up of several properties and while he worked with majority owners of the tracts to reach a fair deal, he had filed the actions to identify all the partial owners. He said the tracts could be split between hundreds of descendants. “For most of these folks, they will now receive money for something they never even knew they had. No one will be forced off the land,” he wrote. Forbes reported that Zuckerberg paid close to $100 million for the 700 acres (283 hectares) on the secluded north shores of Kauai in 2014. (rtr)

KENDARI - The government will spend Rp20 trillion (US$1.5 billion) in 2017 to develop a highspeed internet network in districts that have yet to get access to the service, Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara stated. “The government has targeted that all districts and cities in Indonesia would have a network using undersea cables to power the internet by the end of 2019,” Rudiantara remarked at a seminar here on Wednesday. The minister revealed that the
districts of Buton, Central Buton, South Buton, Muna, West Muna, and North Buton in Southeast Sulawesi will be able to enjoy highspeed internet services. The minister noted that development of the network can be accelerated through support of the local government to facilitate land release. “I have ordered the contractors who won the tender to prioritize utilizing local workforce in the project except for the expert staff that would be the authority of the respective company,” he stated. The nationwide high-speed in-
ternet access initiative is being implemented for the period between 2014 and 2019. The program aims to boost economic competitiveness throughout the archipelago. The 2014-2019 Indonesia Broadband Plan requires a total funding of Rp278 trillion ($23.2 billion), 10 percent of which will be covered by the state budget. MELBOURNE - Rafa Nadal’s path to his Australian Open semi-final against Grigor Dimitrov on Friday has taught the 30-year-old Spaniard one thing -he’s still got it. After being bundled out in the first round by compatriot Fernando Verdasco last year, Nadal has reached his fifth semi-final at Melbourne Park in a remarkable turnaround for the 14times grand slam winner. A barren 2016 saw him fail to reach at least one grand slam final for the first time since 2004 and while he won Olympic doubles gold at the Rio Games a troubling wrist injury forced him to call time on his season in early October. “Very happy that after a lot of work, to be in this round again,” Nadal told reporters. “Is special thing for me, especially here in Australia. “So, just excited about be back in final rounds of the most important events. You know, I am here to try to make this. Is always difficult, but I (fought) and I worked hard to try to make that happen.” Hard work has been central to the latter part of Nadal’s career, particularly as knee and wrist injuries forced him to miss large chunks of recent seasons. Questions were being raised as to whether he still had the physicality and game to match the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Warwinka and the evergreen Roger Federer, as well as the new generation coming through. The last three rounds at Melbourne Park have answered those questions decisively as Nadal beat 24th seed Alexander Zverev in five sets, sixth seed Gael Monfils in four, then outclassed third seed Milos Raonic in the
quarter-finals. “Is a good news. Especially winning against difficult players, Monfils, Zverev and now Raonic. I think all of them are top players,” he added. “I think it’s getting tougher now. I think now there is really a new very good generation. So that’s very important for me because that means that I am competitive and playing well.” STRAIGHTER PRIORITIES Next up is Dimitrov. Once tipped as the young player most likely to challenge the established order, the Bulgarian has struggled to live up to those expectations and was hindered by off-court distractions. Friday will mark just his second grand slam semi-final but the 25-year-old feels that under new coach Daniel Vallverdu he now has the mental strength and attitude to match the game that prompted those expectations. “I have straighter priorities right now. I know what I want from myself as soon as I come to a tournament,” he said. “I come on the court. I’m just happy to try to find a way, even if things are not going my way.” Things have indeed gone his way this year. Dimitrov is on a winning run of 10 matches that earned him the Brisbane International title and has taken him to the last four at the Australian Open. However, he knows that means little when he steps on court against Nadal, who has won seven of their eight previous encounters. “In order to win a slam, there’s no shortcut,” the 15th seed added. “If you think about it, when have you seen an easy semi-final or something like that? “You got to work for it. Isaiah Thomas worked his fourth-quarter magic again Wednesday night, leading Boston to a 120-109 victory over the Houston Rockets that ended the Celtics’ three-game losing streak. Thomas scored 11 consecutive Boston points in the fourth quarter as the Celtics (27-18) came back from 11 points down in the first half and won going away at the end. With several members of the New England Patriots sitting courtside, Thomas, leading the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring (10 points per game coming in), put on a show with 13 points and five assists to win his unofficial duel with fellow MVP candidate James Harden.
Harden was called for a flagrant-1 foul for flailing his left hand out and hitting and cutting Boston’s Jonas Jerebko. That led to Jerebko hitting two free throws for the personal foul before Thomas hit the pair for the flagrant to put Boston ahead to stay, triggering a 13-2 run. Thomas, notching his 29th straight 20-point game, added nine assists and five rebounds in the win. Harden finished with 30 points, 12 assists and six rebounds but turned the ball over seven times and was 3 of 15 from the floor before hitting three late baskets that didn’t matter. He was 2 of 11 from
3-point range. Jae Crowder, who played the majority of the defense on Harden with Avery Bradley out, had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and Al Horford scored 20 and added nine assists in the win. The Rockets (34-15) absorbed their sixth loss in nine games. They now have only their second two-game losing streak of the season. Ryan Anderson scored 19 points and Sam Dekker came off the bench to contribute 15 points in the defeat. RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil beat Colombia 1-0 in a benefit match for the families of those killed in the Chapecoense air disaster but Wednesday’s game in Rio de Janeiro was marred by a disappointing turnout. Only 18,695 people were in the 45,000 capacity Nilton Santos stadium for what was billed as ‘The Friendship Game.’ Some fans of club side Botafogo also booed Willian Arao, who left for rivals Flamengo last year. The game, played less than two months after the tragedy, was another emotional night for players and fans. Only six of the 77 people on board the Lamia flight carrying the Chapecoense team to Colombia for their Copa Sudamericana final survived the crash on Nov. 28. Four of the survivors were Brazilians, three players and a radio commentator, and all four were introduced to fans before the game. One of them, goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, was in a wheelchair after having part of his leg amputated as a result of the crash. BARCELONA - Real Madrid have come crashing back down to earth in recent weeks after a euphoric 2016 and must now cope with a long injury list as they try to limit the fallout from Wednesday’s King’s Cup exit when they host Real Sociedad this weekend. MELBOURNE - Rafa Nadal’s path to his Australian Open semi-final against Grigor Dimitrov on Friday has taught the 30-year-old Spaniard one thing -he’s still got it. After being bundled out in the first round by compatriot Fernando Verdasco last year, Nadal has reached his fifth semi-final at Melbourne Park in a remarkable turnaround for the 14times grand slam winner. A barren 2016 saw him fail to reach at least one grand slam final for the first time since 2004 and while he won Olympic doubles gold at the Rio Games a troubling wrist injury forced him to call time on his season in early October. “Very happy that after a lot of work, to be in this round again,” Nadal told reporters. “Is special thing for me, especially here in Australia. “So, just excited about be back in final rounds of the most important events. You know, I am here to try to make this. Is always difficult, but I (fought) and I worked hard to try to make that happen.” Hard work has been central to the latter part of Nadal’s career, particularly as knee and wrist injuries forced him to miss large chunks of recent seasons. Questions were being raised as to whether he still had the physicality and game to match the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Warwinka and the evergreen Roger Federer, as well as the new generation coming through. The last three rounds at Melbourne Park have answered those questions decisively as Nadal beat 24th seed Alexander Zverev in five sets, sixth seed Gael Monfils in four, then outclassed third seed Milos Raonic in the
quarter-finals. “Is a good news. Especially winning against difficult players, Monfils, Zverev and now Raonic. I think all of them are top players,” he added. “I think it’s getting tougher now. I think now there is really a new very good generation. So that’s very important for me because that means that I am competitive and playing well.” STRAIGHTER PRIORITIES Next up is Dimitrov. Once tipped as the young player most likely to challenge the established order, the Bulgarian has struggled to live up to those expectations and was hindered by off-court distractions. Friday will mark just his second grand slam semi-final but the 25-year-old feels that under new coach Daniel Vallverdu he now has the mental strength and attitude to match the game that prompted those expectations. “I have straighter priorities right now. I know what I want from myself as soon as I come to a tournament,” he said. “I come on the court. I’m just happy to try to find a way, even if things are not going my way.” Things have indeed gone his way this year. Dimitrov is on a winning run of 10 matches that earned him the Brisbane International title and has taken him to the last four at the Australian Open. However, he knows that means little when he steps on court against Nadal, who has won seven of their eight previous encounters. “In order to win a slam, there’s no shortcut,” the 15th seed added. “If you think about it, when have you seen an easy semi-final or something like that? “You got to work for it. Isaiah Thomas worked his fourth-quarter magic again Wednesday night, leading Boston to a 120-109 victory over the Houston Rockets that ended the Celtics’ three-game losing streak. Thomas scored 11 consecutive Boston points in the fourth quarter as the Celtics (27-18) came back from 11 points down in the first half and won going away at the end. With several members of the New England Patriots sitting courtside, Thomas, leading the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring (10 points per game coming in), put on a show with 13 points and five assists to win his unofficial duel with fellow MVP candidate James Harden.
Harden was called for a flagrant-1 foul for flailing his left hand out and hitting and cutting Boston’s Jonas Jerebko. Facebook’s Zuckerberg ‘reconsidering’ land sale actions against Hawaiians
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he is reconsidering efforts to force the sale of land tracts belonging to native Hawaiians that fall within a large estate he bought on the island of Kauai, after facing harsh criticism.
Zuckerberg filed what are known as quiet title actions to secure parcels of land within his seafront property on the island of Kauai. The quiet title system is used to establish ownership of land where inheritance has occurred over generations and lacks formal documentation, and to force sale. “Based on feedback from the local community, we are reconsidering the quiet title process and discussing how to move forward,” Zuckerberg said in a statement on Tuesday night. “We want to make sure we are following a process that protects the interests of property owners, respects the traditions of native Hawaiians, and preserves the environment,” he added. Hawaii state representative Kaniela Ing, who in response to the controversy introduced a bill mandating mediation in such actions involving native Hawaiians
and likened Zuckerberg’s plans to those of sugar barons who took land from native Hawaiians in the 1800s, said he was heartened by the news. “I mahalo Mr. Zuckerberg for his words of aloha and willingness to talk,” Ing said in a statement on Wednesday. He then urged the social media executive to drop the legal actions, support a local legal organization, and “join us at the table to restart a positive dialog as mutual stewards of land and culture.” Zuckerberg’s statement comes just days after he posted on his Facebook an explanation of his Hawaii plans, as news of the actions drew headlines and anger. He said in the post the estate is made up of several properties and while he worked with majority owners of the tracts to reach a fair deal, he had filed the actions to identify all the partial owners. He said the tracts could be split between hundreds of descendants. “For most of these folks, they will now receive money for something they never even knew they had. No one will be forced off the land,” he wrote. Forbes reported that Zuckerberg paid close to $100 million for the 700 acres (283 hectares) on the secluded north shores of Kauai in 2014. (rtr)

The police later arrested the suspected drug dealer, identified by
his initials as MUL, and seized 105 grams of crystal meth from him. “The suspect was arrested by police officers when he was riding a Suzuki Escudo jeep with police plate number BK 1452 AL. KENDARI - The government will spend Rp20 trillion (US$1.5 billion) in 2017 to develop a highspeed internet network in districts that have yet to get access to the service, Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara stated. “The government has targeted that all districts and cities in Indonesia would have a network using undersea cables to power the internet by the end of 2019,” Rudiantara remarked at a seminar here on Wednesday. The minister revealed that the
districts of Buton, Central Buton, South Buton, Muna, West Muna, and North Buton in Southeast Sulawesi will be able to enjoy highspeed internet services. The minister noted that development of the network can be accelerated through support of the local government to facilitate land release. “I have ordered the contractors who won the tender to prioritize utilizing local workforce in the project except for the expert staff that would be the authority of the respective company,” he stated. The nationwide high-speed in-
ternet access initiative is being implemented for the period between 2014 and 2019. The program aims to boost economic competitiveness throughout the archipelago. The 2014-2019 Indonesia Broadband Plan requires a total funding of Rp278 trillion ($23.2 billion), 10 percent of which will be covered by the state budget. China increasingly relied on its lumbering and often inefficient state firms to generate economic growth last year as private investment cooled. State firms’ total liabilities rose 10 percent year-on-year to 87 trillion yuan at the end of December. For industrial firms overall, liabilities rose 5.6 percent in 2016.
COMMODITY PRICES RALLY China’s producer prices surged the most in more than five years in December, bolstered by a monthslong rally in prices of coal and raw materials and contributing to a reflationary pulse felt across the global manufacturing sector. BEIJING - Profits for China’s industrial firms rose the most in three years in 2016 as a construction boom fueled a rally in prices of building materials from steel to cement, giving companies more flexibility to start chipping away at a mountain of debt.
Strong profit growth of 8.5 percent last year suggests there may be a solid pick-up in industrial investment in 2017, though many analysts still expect China’s overall economic growth to cool to around 6.5 percent this year from 6.7 percent in 2016. Industrial profits fell 2.3 percent in 2015. Profits in December rose 2.3 percent from a year earlier to 844.4 billion yuan ($122.76 billion), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Thursday, slowing sharply from growth of 14.5 percent in November. But the earnings recovery remained uneven across the industrial sector, with coal miners and processors such as steel mills and oil refiners continuing to see sharper gains than other firms. Profits in the coal mining sector surged 223.6 percent in 2016, while those for iron and steel production and processing companies rose 232.3 percent. Baoshan Iron and Steel (Baosteel) said last week that it expected its net profit to rise 770 percent in 2016 from a year earlier. Baosteel Group is taking over rival Wuhan Steel to create the world’s second-largest steelmaker, in the government’s biggest effort yet to consolidate its fragmented steel industry. China’s stock market investors have cashed in on the industrial revival. An index tracking the industrial sector has risen around 22 percent since June 2016 and reached a 10-1/2-month high in November.

The people of Timbrah Village walked to the beach popularly known as ‘Virgin Beach’ as part of a series of melasti pralingga rituals in which representatives of deities are ceremonially cleansed in salt water before the implementation of the Aci Usaba Sumbu ceremony. was crowded with worshippers and some foreigners on vacation. The damaged roads of Perasai Village had to be passed as each family carried their offerings of rice patties, chicken and seafood. The offerings were being brought to the sea and offered to Lord Baruna with prayers for safety and peace fro the universe. One after the other, people gave their prayers and presented their offereings on the eastern coastline, they took a rest in the shade of the thousands of coconut trees that line the beach. This beach, that is
normally quite empty, was suddenly filled with people on what looked like a large communal picnic. This sort of sight is quite common anytime Balinese Hindus perform melasti processions. “The atmosphere is a bit like a holiday” said one of devotees named Ni Luh Putu Widnyani. However unlike most other villages in Bali that perform their melasti, rites in one fell swoop with villagers bringing their own offerings and sanctified effigies being carried in the same procession – whether to the beach, river lake or other source of water, Timbrah villagers bring their own offerings first while the sanctified village temple effigies are carried later at around 2PM. Due to the recent rains, the tourist visit to one of the attractions in Bangli, namely Penglipuran village, shows a decline. Operations manager of Penglipuran tourist attraction, I Nengah Moneng, said on Wednesday (Jan. 25) that persistent heavy rains in Bangli and surrounding areas in recent weeks have caused the tourist visits to Penglipuran village to decrease. However, the decline is not very significant. “The decline in tourist visit is certain. However, I did not know
the percentage for sure because I have not checked it yet. Clearly, there is a decrease but not too significant,” explained Nengah Moneng. Moneng added the declining tourist visits happened to domestic travelers, primarily of Balinese teenagers. The visit of foreign tourist is relatively normal, although there is a decline of one to two people. “The most visible decline
is in the Bali local tourist visit. By and large, teenagers will make a visit in hot weather. Since it rained recently, the tourist visit declined slightly,” he said. He said that tourist visit will usually return to normal after feast holiday. He said that possibly after Ciwaratri feast the tourist visits will be back to normal. “Normally, after Ciwaratri more visitors will usually come. DENPASAR - The growth of investors in Bali during the period of 2015 to 2016 increased from 1,379 to 2,571. The number of account-based investors (SRE) in Bali in 2015 reached 7,651, and then in 2016 rose to 10,138. “So, in 2016 it showed almost double growth from a year earlier,” said I Gusti Agung Alit Nityaryana, Head of IDX Denpasar Representative Office on Tuesday (Jan. 24). In terms of the number of investors or individual (SID), considering that an individual can have more than one stock accounts, it also increased from 6,484 in 2015 to 8,078 in 2016. Thus, it indicated the growth of 2,015 new investors. When compared to other regions in Indonesia, the number of investors in Bali is ranked third after Java and Medan. “By tendency of age, the investors in Bali are aged 41 to100 years amounting to 4,760, while those aged 18-25 years amount to 1,769 and then those aged of 26-30 years amount to 1,221,” he explained. By profession, the investors consist of employees of private sector followed by students and businessmen. Automatically, more and more people want to sell their shares than to buy shares because pursuant to the law of the market says that when more and more people are selling than buying the stock price will go down,” he explained. Head of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for Bali-Nusra Region, Zulmi, said that OJK or the Stock Exchange and security traders have regularly disseminated to the public including all the campuses. “Moreover, there have been seven exchange galleries at campuses that can be used by students and the community to learn to invest,” he said. With such dissemination, according to him, it is quite effective to make people invest in the capital market. The stock market has already started to become a potential alternative for people to invest. Nevertheless, until now the investors of capital market are still dominated by foreign players with a ratio of about 60:40. It happens because Indonesia’s capital market is very attractive and much in demand. It has good prospects both in terms of business sector and very attractive return. In 2017, The Fed is predicted to raise interest rates, so that the investors are feared to flee to the United States. The death toll may rise, he said. Survivors described chaotic scenes in which hotel residents hid under beds and others jumped out of
windows of the four-story building to escape the attackers. “They kicked down room doors and at some point posed themselves as rescue teams by telling those inside to come out (only) to kill them,” said Hassan Nur, a traditional Somali elder. He said two well-known clan elders were among those killed. The assault on the hotel started when a suicide car bomb exploded at its gates. A second explosion soon followed. Dozens of people, including lawmakers, were thought to have been staying at the hotel at the time of the
morning attack, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein. A nearby shopping center caught fire and dozens of people helped save goods from the flames. Somalia’s homegrown Islamic extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack via its online radio, Andalus, saying its fighters succeeded in entering the hotel. Al-Shabab frequently targets hotels and other public places often visited by government officials and foreigners. Narcotic case in Bali, BNNP Bali rehabilitates 974 people
AMLAPURA - Narcotic still becomes a big threat to Bali. Data of the Bali Provincial National Narcotic Agency (BNNP) indicate that throughout the year 2016, there were 974 people that should follow narcotic rehabilitation because they get involved in it. They mostly come from private sector, unemployment and self-employed people. However, there are also pupils, college students and housewives. Head of the BNNP Bali, I Putu Gede Suastawa, said on Tuesday (Jan. 24) that the total number of people following the rehabilitation signifies that the war against the hazards of narcotic should not recede. In a note of the BNNP Bali, the data of rehabilitation in 2016 in terms of profession show that 510 people or 52.36 percent are from private sector, the unemployed (222 people) or 22.79 percent and the self-employed (156 people) or 16.02 percent. There are also pupil (21), college students (17), merchants (14), farmers (8), police (6), civil servant (5), artists (5), fishermen (4), retired people (3) and housewives (3). As the mapping out by the BNNP Bali, the entry of narcotic passes several entrances such as the crossing of Gilimanuk Harbor, Celukan Bawang, Ngurah Rai Airport, Benoa Harbor, Sanur Beach, Nusa Penida, Padangbai Harbor and several traditional ports in Karangasem such as at Tulamben, Amed and a couple of coastlines in
Kubu subdistrict. In the past year, the drug cases occurred evenly throughout the district and municipal in Bali. Data as of September 2016 showed that the highest drug case was uncovered in Denpasar with 198 cases, followed by Buleleng (35), Jembrana (32), Gianyar (31), Badung (27), Bangli (18), Klungkung (14), Tabanan (12) and Karangasem (7). “The data of the case is small, but do not necessarily mean there are no drugs. It precisely happens because disclosure effort is not serious enough. Actually, it can reach more than this,” he said. Seeing the urgency of the problem on drug abuse, then his agency is very encouraging to immediately form BNNK in Karangasem. Thus, the handling will be more intensive in the field. Besides, the most worrying thing for the BNNP Bali is the trend of drug cases among the students. Therefore, to face this situation, Suastawa hoped the P4GN integrated curriculum program can provide significant influences on the students. This program was launched in June 2016 coinciding with the International Day against Drugs. At junior high school level, the curriculum is inserted into the subjects like religion, social sciences, Bahasa Indonesia, civics as well as physical and sport education. Bali needs to emulate other countries. Although Bali is an island, it is inappropriate to be compared to
a country, but Bali needs to learn, for example, from Malaysia. “Malaysia is a small country, but it has regional planning for the next 50 years. There has been a picture of Malaysia how it will look like and it was made by an Indonesian,” he said. According to him, Bali has the capacity for that, so that what is needed is good will and political will of the government so that the experts or stakeholders can give their contribution to promote Bali tourism. Indeed, recently the foreign tourist visit showed an increase, especially Chinese tourists. Unfortunately, the hotel revenue received is not comparable to the number of foreign tourist arrivals that make the room rate cheap. Cheap price happens in line with the law of economics, the laws of the market. “Now, we are oversupply due to many hotel rooms. When compared to the room rate in 1980s in the range of USD 200-USD 300, now we can even get IDR 300,000. Indeed, it directs to quality,” he explained. On that account, the government should control the growth of hotels in Bali. “There should not be too many rooms and there should be research on accommodation supply. We may not let the oversupply of hotel room happen as it currently does,” he added. If it can be controlled through hotel moratorium, then in the upcoming 5 to 10 years, room rates will increase and traffic congestion can be reduced. (kmb42)

According to Putu Ariadi, to open the trekking path it takes him for weeks considering that the pathway is
rarely passed through by the public and covered with shrubs. After opening the trekking path, Paksebali village plans to set up a rest area in the form of gazebo for travelers participating in the trekking. The presence of trekking at Paksebali hills will strengthen the position of the village into tourism village. Aside from trekking path, his village has arranged the area of Unda River into water attraction. With the village fund worth IDR 300 million, the Paksebali village builds a restaurant that will be managed by village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) of Paksebali. With the existence of the restaurant, he hoped that rafting entrepreneurs can re-use the area as the finish line in the whitewater rafting adventure. In addition, the village has made cooperation with travel agencies to take advantage of the restaurant such as the lunch venue for travelers visiting Klungkung. Additionally, he hoped the support of the government of Klungkung to promote the tourist attraction and take advantage of the restaurant as the venue of meeting activities held by the government. Hindu devotees in Buleleng town that celebrated Pagerwesi feast have already looked busy from early morning. Coinciding with the rising sun, they have conducted prayers. Hectic atmosphere is similar to the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan. Besides, the feast falling every six months (210 days) looks so different from the other areas. Devotees do not only put offerings at their clan temple and universal temple, but there is also a tradition having been carried from generation to generation in the form of putting offerings for the deceased family. It is carried out at cemetery. Presenting food offerings or munjung is followed by all members of the family. The offerings brought as usual are put over the grave looking in a neat row with a variety of sizes and accompanied with the worship procession. We must remember both the living and dead ones,” he said when met at Buleleng cemetery on Wednesday (Jan. 25). Both the adult and children also joined the procession at the cemetery. In addition to the offerings, they also brought candles and fireworks. NEW YORK — Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested early Thursday after he allegedly got into an altercation with another man outside a New York City museum where he has been chanting “He will not divide us” in front of a live camera since Donald Trump’s inauguration. Police said LaBeouf pulled the scarf of an unidentified 25-year-old man outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, scratching his face in the process. They said he also pushed the man, who refused medical attention. LaBeouf has spent the first few days of Trump’s presidency swaying, dancing and repeating the phrase “He will not divide us” in front of
a live camera outside the museum. The livestream is for a participatory public art project LaBeouf and two collaborators intend to have running 24 hours a day for the next four years. The camera went live the morning of the inauguration, along with a website inviting the public to show up and participate. LeBeouf has been a frequent, though not constant presence.
Technically, the project from LaBeouf and his performance art partners isn’t about opposition to Trump, LaBeouf told The Associated Press in an interview conducted on Monday in front of the livestream camera. “We’re anti-division out here. Everyone’s invited,” LaBeouf said. “I’m just saying, ‘Be nice to each other.’” It’s not immediately known what led to the alleged altercation Thursday morning. Trump’s call for probe of voter fraud sparks backlash
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would seek an investigation into what he believes was voter fraud in last November’s election, despite an overwhelming consensus among state officials, election experts, and politicians that it is rare in the United States. The announcement drew rebukes from both Republicans and Democrats who said the Republican president’s unsubstantiated claims of large-scale fraud could undermine voting rights efforts as well as confidence in the new U.S. chief executive. In the Nov. 8 election, Trump lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton by nearly 3 million
ballots. Irked by that large figure, he has blamed voter fraud without citing evidence. “I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and....even, those registered to vote who are dead (and many for a long time),” Trump said on Twitter. “Depending on results, we will
strengthen up voting procedures!” In an interview with ABC News, Trump said none of the illegal votes would have been cast for him. “They would all be for the other side,” he said. White House press secretary Sean Spicer later told a news briefing that the probe would not focus on only the 2016 election. Three Democratic congressmen demanded proof of such fraud and sent a letter to election officials and attorneys general in all 50 U.S. states seeking examples of cases of fraud in November’s vote. Many of the state officials did
not need prompting with election officers in several states rejecting Trump’s claims immediately. “Easy to vote, hard to cheat #Ohio,” Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, Jon Husted, said in a Twitter post rebutting Trump’s claim that 3 million to 5 million illegal immigrants voted against him. “That’s impossible,” Democratic Secretary of State Alex Padilla of California said on CNN. There is no history of widespread voter fraud in U.S. elections. Leading Republicans, including the top Republican in Congress, House
of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, have rejected the claims.
