Dempsey confirms extension with ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Associated Press Writer

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — Patrick Dempsey’s acting and racing careers will be intermingled for the foreseeable future. Dempsey, a driver/owner racing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance event this weekend, confirmed Saturday night that he has signed a two-year contract extension to continue with the popular television series “Grey’s Anatomy.” The

show has not officially been picked up beyond its 10th season, but Dempsey’s deal provides a strong indication that it will be back. Dempsey also plans to run a full season in the United SportsCar Championship. Dempsey said the acting gig has been a huge help to his other full-time job. Dempsey and co-driver Andrew Davis are racing 13 events — which would be the actor’s first full season.

PARK CITY, Utah — The dramatic story of a drummer who pursues excellence at all costs won top honors at the Sundance Film Festival “Whiplash” collected both audience and jury prizes for American dramatic films Saturday at the festival’s awards ceremony. The musical drama by writer-director Damien Chazelle opened the independent film showcase last week and rode a wave of positive buzz throughout the 10-day event. Chazelle made his Sundance debut last year with a short version of “Whiplash” intended to gain financial support for the feature-length film. The feature stars 26-year-old Miles Teller as an aspiring jazz drummer and veteran actor J.K. Simmons as his unforgiving instructor. Chazelle thanked his actors “who really made this movie work.” The 28year-old filmmaker drew on his personal experiences as a member of a high school jazz band as inspiration for the film.

The documentary “Rich Hill,” a coming-of-age story about the inhabitants of a tiny town in Missouri, won the jury award for U.S. documentary. The American documentary about music’s healing effects on dementia, “Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory,” won the audience award. BANGKOK — Anti-government demonstrators trying to derail Thailand’s contentious general elections scheduled next week swarmed dozens of polling stations to stop advance voting Sunday, chaining them shut and preventing hundreds of thousands of people from casting ballots. Street fights broke out in several parts of Bangkok. A protest faction leader was fatally shot in a confrontation near a polling station that also left 11 people wounded. The chaos underscored the increasing powerlessness of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s democratically elected administration, which had called the Feb. 2 vote in a failed bid to ease months of

street protests that have thrown the nation into crisis. Police took no action to disperse the crowds, following longstanding government orders that appear aimed at avoiding violence that could trigger a military coup. Although most polling stations in Bangkok and many in the opposition stronghold in the south were forced to close, voting proceeded largely unhindered in the rest of the

country. Still, the upheaval proved that demonstrators struggling to overthrow Yingluck have the ability to disrupt the main vote next week, which the Election Commission also wants postponed. Ruling party officials suggested over the weekend that they were willing to delay the ballot, but only if protests end and the main opposition party abandons its boycott. There has been no sign yet that Yingluck’s rivals would agree to any deal, however, and Sunday’s unrest appeared likely to push the two sides further apart. Suthida Sungkhapunthu, a 28year-old office worker, turned back from one polling station after

reading news of the day’s mayhem on her phone. “I saw this coming but I’m still quite disappointed,” she said, denouncing the protesters as “undemocratic” as she watched a mob surrounding her polling station a block away. “It’s my constitutional right” to vote, she said. The protest movement, known as the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, had pledged not to obstruct the poll, saying its supporters would only stand outside to express their views and urge people not to vote. Protest spokesman Akanat Promphan told The Associated Press that those who had locked the gates of polling stations had “acted on

their own,” but he did not condemn them and said only that any decision to close stations was made by Election Commission officials. The protesters’ effort, however, appeared to have been widely coordinated. All across Bangkok, demonstrators waving the Thai flag physically blocked electoral officials, ballot boxes and voters from getting inside polling centers. Authorities shut at least 48 of the city’s 50 voting stations as a result. In the south, at least 11 voting stations were also forced to shut, bringing the total number closed to 59 out of 152 nationwide, electoral officials said. Continued on page 6

SINGARAJA - Buleleng is grieving..! Heavy rain flushing the area of Denbukit Area since Thursday afternoon (Jan 23) claimed casualties. Two victims were killed in the avalanche at Tajun village, Kubutambahan subdistrict, one was swept away by flash flood at Bebetin village, Sawan subdistrict and another was toppled over by rubble of wall at Lokapaksa village, Seririt subdistrict. while that of Made Sudarsana was brought to Gianyar. Meanwhile, a dam at Pakisan village, Sawan subdistrict, collapsed so it triggered flash flood afflicting the Manuksesa hamlet, Bebetin village, Sawan subdistrict. As a result, a student on behalf of Kadek Sri Ayu Padmi, 20, remaining in the first semester of the Hindu Teacher’s College (STKIP) was killed as swept away by the stream while riding a Vario motorcycle. “I had passed with Dek Ayu, and suggested her to turn back because the stream was very swift. However, she was going home in a hurry,” said one of the residents. However, after that he got information if Kadek Ayu was swept away by flash floods. The flash floods itself carried materials such as rocks covering the road access and devastated the local paddy fields, including the home to 19 families so a total of 60 people took refuge to Cengked Temple at Galungan village whose location was quite high. “People are afraid of subsequent floods so they temporarily shelter in the temple,” said one of the residents. The victim itself is the second daughter of a military officer named Wayan Pardi who is on duty at Military Area Command of Tejakula.

The officers had difficulty to evacuate the victims found in the abyss in the area of Mangening village (north of Tajun village—Ed). “We got difficulty when evacuating the casualties because the terrain is steep,” said the Chief of Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Buleleng, Putu Dana. Having been assisted by heavy equipment from Denpasar, the victim could finally be evacuated on Friday (Jan 24) and was immediately taken to Buleleng Hospital. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — When the nation’s foremost dog show added an event open to mixed breeds, owners cheered that everydogs were finally having their day. They see the Westminster Kennel Club’s new agility competition, which will allow mutts at the elite event next month for the first time since the 1800s, as a singular chance to showcase what unpedigreed dogs can do.

DENPASAR - At an elegant event held on 26 January 2014 at the Office of the Consulate General of India in Renon, Denpasar, Bali, over 120 members of the Indian community in Bali together celebrated the India’s 65th Republic Day. At the occasion, the Consul General of India, Mr. A.S. Takhi, hoisted the National Flag of India and all the participants, including teachers and students from the two international schools – Gandhi Memorial International School (GMIS) & Taman Rama International School - together sang the National Anthem of India, Jana Gana Mana, written by great poet, painter and scholar, Rabindranath Tagore.

“It’s great that people see that, ‘Wow, this is a really talented mixed breed that didn’t come from a fancy breeder,’” said Stacey Campbell, a San Francisco dog trainer heading to Westminster with Roo!, a highenergy — see exclamation point — husky mix she adopted from an animal shelter. “I see a lot of great dogs come through shelters, and they would be great candidates for a lot of sports. And sometimes they get overlooked because they’re not purebred dogs,” Campbell said. The tradition of celebrating Saint Vincent here dates back to the Middle Ages, but by the early 20th century it had largely died out. The volume of exports also rose 15.80 percent from 11,758.8 tons in the first ten months of 2012 to 13,818.02 tons in the same period of 2013, according to data that published by Bali Province. Fish shipped fresh or frozen is catch of local fishermen as well as fishing companies operating at Benoa port. Tuna fish is the biggest contributor to the province’s income among 11 Bali’s fish and marine products that are exported. Most tuna fish from the region is exported to Japan comprising 37.23 percent of the total, followed by the US (24.62 percent), Australia (5.74 percent), Hong Kong (4.85 percent) and Malaysia (0.69 percent). The fish is also exported to Singapore (0.87 percent), Britain (0.75 percent), France (1.03 percent), Germany (0.43 percent and Spain (1.11 percent). The rest goes to a number of other countries. Other fishery products that have also entered export markets are ornamental fish, lobster, shark fin, snapper, grouper and crab. Bali earned US$94.05 million in the past 10 months of 2013 from exporting the products, which was an increase by 9.40 percent from the same period of the previous year recorded at US$85.97 million.

And it should not be allowed to put props of legislative candidate in front of the offices or government agencies, state-owned enterprises, regional government-owned enterprises, education institutions and they should really be neutral. “Please pay attention to the beauty of the objects and tourist attractions. No installation of billboards and campaign props of legislative candidates is allowed at the locations so that travelers can really enjoy the beauty of the objects and tourist attraction,” he said. He asked the governments and the Electoral Commission of the county and municipality to cooperate with the Electoral Supervisory Committee of the province and county/municipality to act decisively against any violations related to the installation of billboards and campaign props so the beauty of the Island of the Gods remained to be well maintained. “Installation of the political party attributes such as at the airport, main roads and tourist attractions as well as a business center in Bali should start to be arranged and disciplined,” he explained. Arseniy Yatsenyuk, a former foreign minister who led efforts to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union, told a large crowd on Kiev’s central square that President Viktor Yanukovych must still meet several key opposition demands and that talks will continue. The overnight outburst underlined a growing inclination for radical actions among some in the protest movement that has gripped the capital for two months. More moderate opposition leaders like Yatsenyuk have tried appealing to stop the clashes, but have been booed or even sprayed with a fire extinguisher in the case of Vitali

Associated Press DAVOS — The International Monetary Fund’s managing director warned Saturday of the risks posed to global economic recovery from the reduction of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary stimulus and falling prices in the eurozone. Despite growing evidence the global economy is faring better than it has for years, Christine Lagarde said policymakers around the world have to be alert to the potential repercussions from the Fed’s “tapering,” a policy change it decided to embark upon in December. So far, the move has been minimal — it has reduced the amount of bonds it buys each month by $10 billion to $75 billion — but many economists think that it could end this year if the U.S. economic recovery gains steam. Over the past few years, the Fed’s stimulus, in its various guises has had a big impact on financial markets. As well as shoring up stock markets around the world, the new money created by the stimulus has flown to emerging economies as investors sought out better returns. Currencies, such as the Indian rupee and the Brazilian real, have been beneficiaries. The withdrawal could prompt a reverse in those flows and see their currencies come under pressure. “This is a new risk on the horizon and really needs to be watched,” Lagarde said in a discussion about the global economic outlook at the World Economic Forum. Though the shockwaves that have hit Argentina this week weren’t specifically about tapering, the turmoil the country’s currency experienced — it fell by nearly 15 percent on Thursday alone — was felt throughout the world, prompting stock markets to post broad-based declines. Lagarde also cautioned about the outlook for the 18-country eurozone. Though the eurozone has emerged from its longest-ever recession and many of the bailed-out countries appear headed for modest growth, inflation has fallen sharply. At last count, it was down at 0.8 percent in the year to December, way below the European Central Bank’s target to keep price rises just below 2 percent. He said the world economic powers agreed to “promptly” build on the Bali agreement with “a particular focus on issues important to least developing countries.” “In order to be able to successfully tackle these topics, fresh and credible approaches will be needed,” the Swiss minister said. forward with the WTO” while also implementing the red tape-cutting provisions previously agreed to in Bali. Japan, he told reporters, has shown “a considerable amount of flexibility” during the trade talks and hopes the U.S. will be similarly flexible at the negotiating table. The world’s biggest powers in trade have also vowed to craft a global deal on free trade in environmental goods to help fight global warming. U.S., EU, Chinese and Japanese trade ministers were among the group of developed economies that announced the effort a day earlier. If the Island of Madura has bull race, Bali has makepung or buffalo race that grows and thrives in Jembrana. Makepung is not just a race to win prizes. More than that, it is meant to win for the pride of the buffalo owners. Similarly, it is intended to prove the superiority of the two groups, namely the West Ijo Gading and East Ijo Gading (River). The group belonging to West Ijo Gading includes the subdistricts located in the west of the river such as Melaya and Negara. Meanwhile, the East Ijo Gading group is located in the east side of the river covering the Jembrana, Mendoyo and Pekutatan subdistrict. In terms of the amount of cash prize received by the winners, it is not comparable to the price of two buffaloes along with its maintenance cost. However, it tends to be associated with the tradition of agrarian society and prestige among the participants or buffalo owners. A pair of buffaloes is valued at IDR 30 million—IDR 60 million. The price can soar when the buffalo gets outstanding achievement in the race arena regularly held every year. Although the race is only held two times a year, the process of preparation and training of the buffalo is very tiring and spending not a few. Even, almost every week of the owners routinely train their buffalo in several nearby circuits like at Delod Berawah (Mendoyo), Mertasari (Jembrana) and Sang Hyang Cerik (Melaya). Each has its own distinctive trick to make their buffalo go fast on the circuit. Their treatment is special and very different from the usual

treatment given to ordinary buffalo. Other than routinely given a special herbal drink posing the mixture of palm sugar, egg and coconut water, the racing buffaloes should be basked more frequently. It is recorded there were hundreds of groups remaining active in both the Western and Eastern Ijo Gading. The buffalo race also has its own fans. No wonder that every implementation of the Jembrana Regent Cup it is always crowded with spectators. They are willing to stand on the edge of the track under heat of the sun to see the racing buffaloes and the attraction of jockey herding the buffalo to the finish line. As in the Jembrana Regent Cup in the Sang Hyang Cerik recently, a total of 249 pairs of buffaloes belonging to two groups of the East and West Ijo Gading competed from the morning to the afternoon. In the race, three groups were competed. To get the winner, the score of the group in each category from the west and east were totalized. Agrarian art Makepung is one of the 12 arts categorized into the native rare arts belonging to Jembrana. Various sources mention if the buffalo race attraction is estimated to have been organized since the 1920s and almost coincided with the development of the Jegog art. Makepung evolves through generations

in the agrarian community of Jembrana at the time. In the past, it was recorded there were nearly 90 subak organizations from Melaya to Pekutatan subdistrict. Buffalo is a very familiar means of transportation of rice and easily found among the farmers at that time. Farmers were transporting rice from the fields to the granary and house side by side. Some of them raced in order they could arrive home fast and so that the whole rice yields could be transported as soon as possible. Inspired by this racing, it developed into the makepung tradition. However, in the current makepung the cart is made more practical where the wheel is very simple consisting of two pieces and only ridden by a jockey. Coordinator of the Buffalo Race Group of Jembrana I Made Mara said the competition was considered a relatively expensive art considering the price of buffalo ranged from IDR 30 million-IDR 60 million and could soar again. Overall, the total cost of all participants could reach billions of rupiahs, not to mention for the preparation of competition made since a couple of months before the date of race. The Regent of Jembrana I Putu Artha said that makepung posed a valuable asset that should continuously be preserved. “It is a tradition born by the Jembrana society and only exists in this area. On that account, we must continue to preserve for tourist attraction as well as local icons,” he said. In addition, his party also expected the attraction could give contribution to the other sectors, such as the agriculture and livestock especially the buffaloes. “This race will encourage the communities to intensive raise their buffalo,” explained Artha. GIANYAR - Probably, it is for the first time in Gianyar County where a painter will patent its technique of painting. Made Subrata, 64, used to be called Mr. Kedol, a painter from Teges hamlet, Gianyar, has been well known among the painters in Indonesia. His painting implementing the spaghetti technique produces a threedimensional look so it is very unique and difficult to trace. As planned, the technique will be soon patented. Uniqueness and rarity of his spaghetti technique makes this artist from Eastern Gianyar register the technique in order to get the Intellectual Property Rights (HAKI). According to him, the painting technique known as the spaghetti technique was obtained while attending lecturer in the Fine Arts College (STSRI or ASRI) of Yogyakarta. While in college he was pursuing the art of batik by using wax pen. He saw the texture of batik was very artistic and brought out his desire to create paintings with a tool resembling the wax pen. Such desire continued to strengthen him to date. After graduating from college in 1977, Kedol Subrata took odd jobs in Bali, but they still related to the arts. At that time, he still had an obsession to express his inspiration by means of wax pen. Ultimately in 1991 he accidentally discovered a sheet of plastic at his home yard. At that time, he tried to make it into conical shape and was then used as a tool for painting. “The results were very unique and at that time I called it the tangled thread technique in accordance with the story of my life,” he said. Unfortunately, the work of his paintings had become the laughingstock among the fellow painters in Bali. Some galleries also rejected his works. It was not made him frustrated, but he continued to work with the techniques. Eventually, in 1993 he joined some Balinese artists to make exhibition in Switzerland. “Accidentally, a Picasso photographer who happened to see his painting seemed to get amazed by the technique he used. Even, the photographer remarked if his painting applied the spaghetti technique. Since then, his painting known to apply spaghetti technique became famous in Europe,” he said. With the spaghetti technique, Kedol was then able to speak much in the national and international arena of paintings. Some countries had been chosen to display his works such as Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Even, most Chinese collectors were then also looking for his paintings. The objects of painting with spaghetti technique he made were in the form of Barong, Rice Harvest and Sunflower. Such kinds of painting were widely collected by expatriates and conglomerates in Jakarta. The number is bigger than war victims. During the eight year Gulf war only 1.2 million or around 150,000 a year are killed, Sutarman said quoting the WHO record. This is what has driven WHO to launch a decade of road safety from 2011 to 2020 with a target of reducing the number of deaths by 50 percent, he said. General Sutarman said in Indonesia more than 25,000 people had died due to traffic accidents in 2013 down from 27,000 in 2012. Based on the number around 80 people died every month or around four people a day, he said. In view of that he said the police continued increasing efforts to prevent and reduce traffic accidents by among other campaigning about road safety at schools and campuses as well as improving the mechanism for issuing driving license.
