things that embarrassed myself and my family” in the days before. He apologized to fiancee Blac Chyna, said he is “seeking help” for his “flaws/issues” and asked his fans to “please pray for me.”

The drama continues to unfold across multiple media platforms. The couple’s reality show has been renewed for a second season, and according to Kardashian family tradition, social media is where future plot points are born. The Kardashians are the realityTV experts of cross-platform storytelling, said Katie Walsh, a doctoral student at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, who presented her studies on reality TV and fan culture at last year’s Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference in Montreal. “Rob and Chyna have a TV show, and you can continue watching it on social media,” she said. “The other aspect of social media that makes it so important is that it’s participatory... Everybody has access to Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and then you can actually participate in the story line of the show by making comments on their Instagram.” The Kardashians are also champions of using social media as marketing, said David Schwab, head of celebrity strategy firm Octagon First Call. “There is nobody like them in the states that has a socialite social footprint and therefore have been able to cross promote everything they do, from shows to products to anything they want to help a sister or niece or godkid out with,” he said. “It’s unique.” (ap)

Philippines braces for Christmas storm, offers roasted pigs

MANILA — A powerful typhoon menacingly blew closer to the eastern Philippines on Christmas Day as officials struggled to divert people’s attention from family celebrations and travel. A provincial governor offered roasted pigs to entice villagers to move to emergency shelters. Typhoon Nock-Ten packed maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers (114 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 255 kph (158 mph), and was expected to smash into the island province of Catanduanes on Sunday night. It’s then forecast to blow westward across the southern portion of the main island of Luzon and pass close to the capital, Manila, on Monday, before exiting over the South China Sea. Nock-Ten may weaken after making landfall and hitting the Sierra Madre mountain

range in southern Luzon. Heavy rainfall, destructive winds and battering waves were threatening heavily populated rural and urban regions, where the Philippine weather agency raised typhoon warnings, stranding thousands of people in ports as airlines canceled flights and ferries were prevented from sailing. Officials warned of storm surges in coastal villages, flash floods and landslides, and asked villagers to evacuate to safer grounds. Christmas is the biggest holiday in the Philippines, which has Asia’s

largest Roman Catholic population, making it difficult for officials to get people’s attention to heed the warnings. With many refusing to leave high-risk communities, some officials said they decided to carry out forced evacuations. In the past 65 years, seven typhoons have struck the Philippines on Christmas Day, according to the government’s weather agency. Gov. Miguel Villafuerte of Camarines Sur province, which is in the typhoon’s forecast path, offered roast pigs, a popular Christmas delicacy locally called “lechon,” in evacuation centers to entice villagers to move to emergency shelters. “I know it’s Christmas ... but this is a legit typhoon,” Villafuerte tweeted on Christmas Eve. “Please

Expensive maintenance, Jegog gamelan troupes feared to go extinct

NEGARA - Jegog art troupes in Jembrana are worried if one day the existence of the art will become extinct. This triggered by the expensive maintenance cost of their bamboo musical instrument. Suppose that a blade of the bamboo instrument is damaged or broken, it will cost at least IDR 350,000. Besides, maintaining the jegog musical instrument also requires a place and extra care. When compared to another gamelan instrument like gong, jegog instruments are more vulnerable to damage due to weather factors or inadequate storage. This was expressed by a number of representatives of jegog art troupes when making audience with the Regent of Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan, on Tuesday night (Dec. 20). The worries on the extinction of jegog art were immediately denied by Deputy Regent of Jembrana, Kembang Hartawan, by stating that jegog and makepung (buffalo races) are the icons of the native arts to Jembrana that must be maintained. For instance, the establishment of smart pavilion at Rambutsiwi (Mendoyo) funded by central government has been equipped with amphitheater facility. “Later, we will give the opportunity to all the art troupes to make performance and entertain guests stopping in Jembrana. You can participate in making this program successful. From now on, do not let any jegog instrument be damaged because they are never used,” said Kembang. “Jegog should be performed as often as possible. Local government also plans to stage jegog performance contest every month whose venue and schedule can be specified later on,” added Deputy Regent Kembang. Nengah Alit said that so far his agency records a total of 76 active jegog art troupes throughout Jembrana district. He added that government of Jembrana has paid more attentions to this art including by holding regular

jegog festival with provision of coaching money that increases every year. Besides, this art is also regularly delivered as the envoy of Jembrana in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) to provide the chance of making performance in larger-scale events. On that occasion, he also facilitated each jegog art troupe in the making of funding aid proposal. “Jegog is an icon of Jembrana district so that it should be sustainable. We also have applied for a patent right for this tradition as what we have done previously to the makepung or buffalo races,” Alit said. In the meantime, an art troupe representative, Putu Bobi Agus Dharma, appreciated to the gathering between the government of Jembrana and all the jegog art troupes as an effort to seek input and information for the survival of the jegog art in Jembrana. He also asked for support of the government to more actively provide development for jegog art troupes as well as the old and young artists. Govt may not only pay attention to agriculture in upstream sector

DENPASAR - The Bali provincial government will allocate the budget of IDR 700 billion to the agricultural sector in 2017. In terms of percentage, the budget reaches 14 percent of the total regional budget. Primarily it used for seed and fertilizer subsidies as well as infrastructure such as construction of reservoirs, farm roads and irrigation. “Through our flagship Simantri (integrated farming system) program, the provincial government has also facilitated Simantri insurance for 1,740 cattle. Simantri is a modern agricultural program aimed to attract young people so that they want to cultivate this business,” said Deputy Governor of Bali I Ketut Sudikerta, in the Agrinesia discussion recently. Sudikerta added that agricultural extension workers, subak group and breeder group in the nine districts / municipality should also be given training and coaching. For marketing of the agricultural products, there have been 13 subterminals of agribusiness having

signed MoU with several hotels and supermarkets in Bali. The government’s efforts in promoting the agriculture of Bali can be seen from the farmer exchange value (NTP) in Bali reaching 107.13 percent according to the central statistics agency (BPS), higher than national level of only 101 percent. “In addition, contribution of the agricultural sector to the GDP of Bali in 2015 reached 14.92 percent, as the second highest after the sector of property services amounting to 22.82 percent,” he explained. Arya Wedakarna MWS II, a member of the regional representative council (DPD) of Bali, said that when the Balinese maintain the agrarian culture, they will also maintain their religion, culture and land. However, the percentage of current young farmers are relatively small namely in the range of 10 to 15 percent. Many young people prefer to work in the tourism sector and offices, making it impossible for them to go farming. “The way is not to blame young people and urge them to work in

the fields, but they must become the landlords of the lands in Bali. The workers may be from all over Indonesia but the land must still belong to customary villages and the people of Bali,” he explained while confirming that the land of Bali should not be sold or allowed to change hands. Balinese people have to be the boss for modern agriculture. Wayan Koster, a member of Central House of Representative, said it is required a regulation in the agriculture leading to food sovereignty. Moreover, in terms of potential, region, human resources and infrastructure, Bali is actually able to realize it. However, the problem from the past to present times is the matter of partisanship both the central and local governments that stays to focus on the upstream sector. But, the midstream and downstream sector abandoned. “Almost all the government policies are in the form of subsidies, while the other regulation is focused on the upstream like the

In this case, the agriculture and tourism should be synergized through regulation. “If political economy is run, the potential is 4 million (foreign travelers—Ed), not to mention the domestic travelers. This is a market, probably we do not care. The market exists, but there are no policies connecting and uniting one another,” he explained. Chairman of the Central Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia

(PHDI), Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, said that farmers are managing the ecosystem of Indonesia. Farmers manage soil fertility from end to end. BUDAPEST - Even almost 100 years after his death, the name Harry Houdini is synonymous with escapology, but less is known about his first great escape - how he left his Hungarian home as a child for a new life in the United States. The House of Houdini, a museum in Budapest’s historic Castle district, seeks to shed light on the illusionist’s roots with a display of memorabilia and a research team tracking down documents about his life. “He was of course the greatest escape artist history ever had ... but I believe his secret lies from deep inside from his Hungarian roots, when as a poor Jewish family they escaped Hungary,” museum founder David Merlini said. “That was maybe his first escape: to America, in the hope of a better life.” For Merlini, 38, himself a Hungarian escape artist who advised actor Adrien Brody about Houdini for a mini-series in 2014, Houdini has been a major inspiration. Merlini opened the museum this year as a tribute to the artist who was born in Budapest as Erik Weisz into a Jewish family in 1874. He left with his family for the United States in 1878 and became an American citizen. When he became a magician, Houdini started to call himself Harry Houdini after the French magician Jean Eugene RobertHoudin. He went on to become the most famous escape artist of his day, captivating massive audiences with his daring escapes. He died in 1926 from a ruptured appendix. “We are all a little bit Houdinis because everybody has a secret dream that is just waiting to be fulfilled,” Merlini said. The museum displays Houdini’s handcuffs and other artefacts, many photographs about his life and performances, and also a Bible from 1883, which belonged to his family. “We grew up hearing stories of Houdini and his escaping,” said David Orenstein, a tourist from Israel. Six magicians take turns in entertaining visitors in a small theatre within the museum. (rtr)

U.S. housing, consumer confidence data bolster economic outlook

WASHINGTON - New U.S. singlefamily home sales rose more than expected in November and consumer sentiment hovered near a 13-year high this month, strengthening the view that the economy will gain further momentum next year. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to cut taxes and increase infrastructure spending is expected to boost economic growth, though it already has sparked a surge in mortgage rates that could hurt the housing market in the long term.

“Home buyers are confident in their futures and this means the outlook is likely to be brighter next year than we thought,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG Union Bank in New York. The Commerce Department on Friday said new home sales increased 5.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 592,000 units last month. That was the second highest pace since 2007. Economists had forecast singlefamily home sales, which account for about 9.5 percent of overall home sales, rising 2.1 percent to a 575,000-unit rate last month. Sales rose 16.5 percent from a year ago, boosted by a 43.8 percent jump in the Midwest to a nine-year high. Sales surged 7.7 percent in the West, their highest level since January 2008, but fell 3.1 percent in the South. They were unchanged in the Northeast. Separately, the University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index edged up to a reading of 98.2 from 98 earlier this month. That was the highest reading since January 2004. of economic output which he said was 3-4 trillion Egyptian pounds ($160 billion-$213 billion). That would put the military’s share of economic activity at between $2.39 billion and $4.26 billion. “It has been said that the military’s economy is worth 20 or even 50 percent of the economy. I wish. We have nothing to hide; the military accounts for between 1.5 to 2 percent of the economy,” Sisi said, adding

that the military paid taxes on all projects and that they were subject to regulations and auditing. “We would love for it to be 50 percent.” Sisi, a former general who took office in 2014, has promised to revive the economy, which has struggled since a 2011 uprising scared away investors and tourists, Egypt’s main sources of foreign currency. JAKARTA - Indonesian police killed two suspected Islamist militants in a house in West Java on Sunday, a police spokesman said, in the latest in a series of raids aimed at preventing planned attacks in the Muslim-majority nation. Two men had been arrested in Cibinong, in West Java, and led police to a house nearby, at the Jatiluhur dam, where two other men were found, national police spokesman Awi Setiyono said.

“They were told to surrender, but they refused and tried to attack officers with machetes, so we fired warning shots. When they still approached, we shot them,” Setiyono said. He earlier said that a gunbattle

had occurred. Police seized some weapons and a letter which said the group had planned an attack at an undisclosed location on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), West Java police spokesman Yusri Yunus told Metro TV. JAKARTA — What the heck is “om telolet om?” It’s a meme that’s fanning across social media. It was started by Indonesian children standing on the side of the road yelling for bus and truck drivers to toot their horns, which play a series of jingle-like beeps. Internet footage shows groups of Indonesian kids holding signs and jumping up and down with each passing bus while calling out: “Om telolet om! Om telolet om!” When the driver lays on the

horn, the children jump and shriek with delight. The phrase got picked up online. International DJs have released mixes with om telolet om honks in them, and social media feeds have been spammed with om telolet messages followed by bus icons. Some people have posted videos online in New York and other cities yelling out “om telolet om!” to passing trucks. Many people, however, are baffled and still asking: “What

is om telolet om?” It loosely translates to “uncle, honk, uncle” (“telolet” is onomatopoeia for the festive beeps). In Indonesia, video was posted on Instagram of police officers dancing in the street when passing buses and trucks blasted their horns. All 92 on Syria-bound Russian military jet killed in crash

MOSCOW - A Russian military plane carrying 92 people, including dozens of Red Army Choir singers, dancers and orchestra members, crashed into the Black Sea on its way to Syria on Sunday, killing everyone on board, Russian authorities said. The Russian Defence Ministry said one of its TU-154 Tupolev planes had disappeared from radar screens at 0525 MSK (0225 GMT), two minutes after taking off from Sochi in southern Russia, where it had stopped to refuel from Moscow, on its way to Syria. Major-General Igor Konashenkov, a ministry spokesman, told reporters that nobody had survived. “The area of the crash site has been established. No survivors have been spotted,” he said. An unnamed ministry source told Russian news agencies no life rafts had been found, while another source told the Interfax agency that the plane had not sent an SOS signal. In televised comments, President Vladimir Putin, speaking in St Petersburg, declared Dec. 26 a

national day of mourning. The jet, a Soviet-era Tupolev plane built in 1983, had been carrying 84 passengers and eight crew members. LAUSANNE - Twenty-eight Russian athletes who took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi face disciplinary proceedings over possible manipulation of their urine samples, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Friday. The global skiing body (FIS) later announced that it had suspended six Russian cross-country skiers who were among those being investigated and said Russia had pulled out of hosting the final meeting of the sport’s World Cup season. The moves follow publication earlier this month of the second and final part of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s independent McLaren report into Russian doping. It found more than 1,000 Russian competitors in more than 30 sports were involved in an institutional conspiracy to conceal positive drug tests over the course of five years.. The IOC said on Friday that in the case of the 28 athletes being investigated, there

was “evidence of manipulation of one or more of their urine samples” collected at the 2014 Sochi Games for doping tests. The IOC added that the 28 cases were not considered positive doping tests although “the manipulation of the samples themselves could lead to an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and sanctions.” IOC president Thomas Bach said: “This is the immediate follow-up to Professor (Richard) McLaren’s Report. “The IOC will go beyond the findings of the (McLaren) report by re-analyzing all the samples of all the Russian athletes who participated in the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014 as well as all those who participated in the Olympic Games London 2012.” SYSTEMATIC COVER-UP The McLaren report said there was a systematic cover-up, which was refined at the 2012 Olympics, 2013 world athletics champi-

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday there were some problems with sports doping in Russia, but that there was no state-sponsored doping system as critics have alleged. Speaking at an annual endof-year news conference, Putin said that sports should not be politicized. A group of local players brought up through Atalanta’s youth system leading the Bergamo squad to six straight wins and a nine-match unbeaten run. While Juventus is seemingly marching unopposed to a record sixth straight Serie A title, it’s been the unexpected stories of Milan and Atalanta that have kept the Italian league attractive entering the holiday break. Milan’s 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and 18year-old midfielder Manuel Locatelli have helped the Rossoneri emerge from three years of mediocrity with a mix of youthful energy and enthusiasm plus exceptional skills. Locatelli’s decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Juventus in October was a work of art, while Donnarumma is already drawing comparisons to Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. In Bergamo, Atalanta features nine homegrown players on its first team — the most in Serie A — and regularly uses them. They include 22-year-old defenders Mattia Caldara and Andrea Conti, 21-year-old striker Andrea Petagna — all members of Italy’s under-21 squad — and 22-year-old midfielder Roberto Gagliardini, who was given his first call up to Italy’s senior national team recently after only nine Serie A appearances. Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta’s first-year coach, was hardly given a chance at Inter Milan, where he was fired after five winless matches in September, 2011. BARCELONA — Valencia’s club president has apologized to fans for the team’s poor performance in 2016. Layhoon Chan, who runs the Spanish top-tier side for Singaporean owner Peter Lim, said it “has been a difficult year and I want to ask forgiveness from all of Valencia’s fans for the poor season.” Chan spoke while standing beside a Christmas tree in a video posted Saturday on the club’s website. Valencia has won only three matches in 15 rounds of the Spanish league, leaving it just above the relegation zone near the midpoint of the campaign. Julian Draxler joining Paris Saint-Germain from Wolfsburg

WOLFSBURG — Germany attacking midfielder Julian Draxler is joining Paris Saint-Germain from Wolfsburg in a deal reportedly worth up to 47 million euros (around $49 million). The 23-year-old Draxler was getting a 4 1/2 year deal subject to a medical examination with the French side, Wolfsburg announced on Saturday. Both sides agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. German news agency dpa reported a fee of 42 million euros

($43.9 million) with bonuses of up to 5 million euros ($5.2 million). Draxler joined Wolfsburg from Bundesliga rival Schalke for around 36 million euros in August 2015 but he never really settled at the Volkswagen-backed club. Draxler’s fortunes mirrored that of Wolfsburg. Bundesliga runnerup and German Cup winner in 2015, Wolfsburg is fighting relegation, with coach Dieter Hecking and general manager Klaus Allofs both losing their jobs earlier this

Alex Ferguson’s shadow no longer looms quite so large. Yet, when David Moyes returns to Old Trafford on Monday for the first time since his abrupt firing by Manchester United in April 2014, he’ll find things haven’t changed that much at England’s biggest club since his ill-fated 10-month spell there three seasons ago. In the fourth year of the post-Ferguson era, 20-time champion United is still yearning for its former glories, still searching for that attacking spark of old, and still languishing outside the Champions League qualification positions they once took for granted. Recent results may have been encouraging for United’s latest manager, Jose Mourinho, but a run of three straight wins has only left the team in sixth place heading into the match against Sunderland, the relegationthreatened northeast club coached by Moyes. A top-four finish — and therefore a place in the Champions League — is far from guaranteed for United this season. So Moyes returns to United with a feeling of “What if?” What if he’d been allowed to see out the six-year contract he was given after being hand-picked as a replacement by Ferguson (hence the “Chosen One” moniker)? LAUSANNE - Twenty-eight Russian athletes who took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi face disciplinary proceedings over possible manipulation of their urine samples, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Friday. The global skiing body (FIS) later announced that it had suspended six Russian cross-country skiers who were among those being investigated and said Russia had pulled out of hosting the final meeting of the sport’s World Cup season. The moves follow publication earlier this month of the second and final part of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s independent McLaren report into Russian doping. It found more than 1,000 Russian competitors in more than 30 sports were involved in an institutional conspiracy to conceal positive drug tests over the course of five years.. The IOC said on Friday that in the case of the 28 athletes being investigated, there

was “evidence of manipulation of one or more of their urine samples” collected at the 2014 Sochi Games for doping tests. The IOC added that the 28 cases were not considered positive doping tests although “the manipulation of the samples themselves could lead to an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and sanctions.” IOC president Thomas Bach said: “This is the immediate follow-up to Professor (Richard) McLaren’s Report. “The IOC will go beyond the findings of the (McLaren) report by re-analyzing all the samples of all the Russian athletes who participated in the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014 as well as all those who participated in the Olympic Games London 2012.” SYSTEMATIC COVER-UP The McLaren report said there was a systematic cover-up, which was refined at the 2012 Olympics, 2013 world athletics champi-

All 92 on Syria-bound Russian military jet killed in crash

MOSCOW - A Russian military plane carrying 92 people, including dozens of Red Army Choir singers, dancers and orchestra members, crashed into the Black Sea on its way to Syria on Sunday, killing everyone on board, Russian authorities said. The Russian Defence Ministry said one of its TU-154 Tupolev planes had disappeared from radar screens at 0525 MSK (0225 GMT), two minutes after taking off from Sochi in southern Russia, where it had stopped to refuel from Moscow, on its way to Syria. Major-General Igor Konashenkov, a ministry spokesman, told reporters that nobody had survived. “The area of the crash site has been established. No survivors have been spotted,” he said. An unnamed ministry source told Russian news agencies no life rafts had been found, while another source told the Interfax agency that the plane had not sent an SOS signal. In televised comments, President Vladimir Putin, speaking in St Petersburg, declared Dec. 26 a

national day of mourning. The jet, a Soviet-era Tupolev plane built in 1983, had been carrying 84 passengers and eight crew members. U.S. housing, consumer confidence data bolster economic outlook

WASHINGTON - New U.S. singlefamily home sales rose more than expected in November and consumer sentiment hovered near a 13-year high this month, strengthening the view that the economy will gain further momentum next year. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to cut taxes and increase infrastructure spending is expected to boost economic growth, though it already has sparked a surge in mortgage rates that could hurt the housing market in the long term.

“Home buyers are confident in their futures and this means the outlook is likely to be brighter next year than we thought,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG Union Bank in New York. The Commerce Department on Friday said new home sales increased 5.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 592,000 units last month. That was the second highest pace since 2007. Economists had forecast singlefamily home sales, which account for about 9.5 percent of overall home sales, rising 2.1 percent to a 575,000-unit rate last month. Sales rose 16.5 percent from a year ago, boosted by a 43.8 percent jump in the Midwest to a nine-year high. Sales surged 7.7 percent in the West, their highest level since January 2008, but fell 3.1 percent in the South. They were unchanged in the Northeast. Separately, the University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index edged up to a reading of 98.2 from 98 earlier this month. That was the highest reading since January 2004. of economic output which he said was 3-4 trillion Egyptian pounds ($160 billion-$213 billion). That would put the military’s share of economic activity at between $2.39 billion and $4.26 billion. “It has been said that the military’s economy is worth 20 or even 50 percent of the economy. I wish. We have nothing to hide; the military accounts for between 1.5 to 2 percent of the economy,” Sisi said, adding

that the military paid taxes on all projects and that they were subject to regulations and auditing. “We would love for it to be 50 percent.” Sisi, a former general who took office in 2014, has promised to revive the economy, which has struggled since a 2011 uprising scared away investors and tourists, Egypt’s main sources of foreign currency. JAKARTA - Indonesian police killed two suspected Islamist militants in a house in West Java on Sunday, a police spokesman said, in the latest in a series of raids aimed at preventing planned attacks in the Muslim-majority nation. Two men had been arrested in Cibinong, in West Java, and led police to a house nearby, at the Jatiluhur dam, where two other men were found, national police spokesman Awi Setiyono said.

“They were told to surrender, but they refused and tried to attack officers with machetes, so we fired warning shots. When they still approached, we shot them,” Setiyono said. He earlier said that a gunbattle

had occurred. Police seized some weapons and a letter which said the group had planned an attack at an undisclosed location on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), West Java police spokesman Yusri Yunus told Metro TV. JAKARTA — What the heck is “om telolet om?” It’s a meme that’s fanning across social media. It was started by Indonesian children standing on the side of the road yelling for bus and truck drivers to toot their horns, which play a series of jingle-like beeps. Internet footage shows groups of Indonesian kids holding signs and jumping up and down with each passing bus while calling out: “Om telolet om! Om telolet om!” When the driver lays on the

horn, the children jump and shriek with delight. The phrase got picked up online. International DJs have released mixes with om telolet om honks in them, and social media feeds have been spammed with om telolet messages followed by bus icons. Some people have posted videos online in New York and other cities yelling out “om telolet om!” to passing trucks. Many people, however, are baffled and still asking: “What

is om telolet om?” It loosely translates to “uncle, honk, uncle” (“telolet” is onomatopoeia for the festive beeps). In Indonesia, video was posted on Instagram of police officers dancing in the street when passing buses and trucks blasted their horns. Despite all the fun, The Jakarta Post reported this week that police in Jepara, Indonesia, where children first started yelling the phrase at buses, have banned the practice for safety reasons.(ap)

The House of Houdini, a museum in Budapest’s historic Castle district, seeks to shed light on the illusionist’s roots with a display of memorabilia and a research team tracking down documents about his life. “He was of course the greatest escape artist history ever had ... but I believe his secret lies from deep inside from his Hungarian roots, when as a poor Jewish family they escaped Hungary,” museum founder David Merlini said. “That was maybe his first escape: to America, in the hope of a better life.” For Merlini, 38, himself a Hungarian escape artist who advised actor Adrien Brody about Houdini for a mini-series in 2014, Houdini has been a major inspiration. Merlini opened the museum this year as a tribute to the artist who was born in Budapest as Erik Weisz into a Jewish family in 1874. He left with his family for the United States in 1878 and became an American citizen. When he became a magician, Houdini started to call himself Harry Houdini after the French magician Jean Eugene RobertHoudin. He went on to become the most famous escape artist of his day, captivating massive audiences with his daring escapes. He died in 1926 from a ruptured appendix. “We are all a little bit Houdinis because everybody has a secret dream that is just waiting to be fulfilled,” Merlini said. The museum displays Houdini’s handcuffs and other artefacts, many photographs about his life and performances, and also a Bible from 1883, which belonged to his family. “We grew up hearing stories of Houdini and his escaping,” said David Orenstein, a tourist from Israel. Expensive maintenance, Jegog gamelan troupes feared to go extinct

NEGARA - Jegog art troupes in Jembrana are worried if one day the existence of the art will become extinct. This triggered by the expensive maintenance cost of their bamboo musical instrument. Nengah Alit said that so far his agency records a total of 76 active jegog art troupes throughout Jembrana district. He added that government of Jembrana has paid more attentions to this art including by holding regular

jegog festival with provision of coaching money that increases every year. Besides, this art is also regularly delivered as the envoy of Jembrana in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) to provide the chance of making performance in larger-scale events. On that occasion, he also facilitated each jegog art troupe in the making of funding aid proposal. “Jegog is an icon of Jembrana district so that it should be sustainable. We also have applied for a patent right for this tradition as what we have done previously to the makepung or buffalo races,” Alit said. In the meantime, an art troupe representative, Putu Bobi Agus Dharma, appreciated to the gathering between the government of Jembrana and all the jegog art troupes as an effort to seek input and information for the survival of the jegog art in Jembrana. He also asked for support of the government to more actively provide development for jegog art troupes as well as the old and young artists. Govt may not only pay attention to agriculture in upstream sector

DENPASAR - The Bali provincial government will allocate the budget of IDR 700 billion to the agricultural sector in 2017. In terms of percentage, the budget reaches 14 percent of the total regional budget. Primarily it used for seed and fertilizer subsidies as well as infrastructure such as construction of reservoirs, farm roads and irrigation. “Through our flagship Simantri (integrated farming system) program, the provincial government has also facilitated Simantri insurance for 1,740 cattle. Philippines braces for Christmas storm, offers roasted pigs

MANILA — A powerful typhoon menacingly blew closer to the eastern Philippines on Christmas Day as officials struggled to divert people’s attention from family celebrations and travel. A provincial governor offered roasted pigs to entice villagers to move to emergency shelters. Typhoon Nock-Ten packed maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers (114 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 255 kph (158 mph), and was expected to smash into the island province of Catanduanes on Sunday night. It’s then forecast to blow westward across the southern portion of the main island of Luzon and pass close to the capital, Manila, on Monday, before exiting over the South China Sea. range in southern Luzon. Heavy rainfall, destructive winds and battering waves were threatening heavily populated rural and urban regions, where the Philippine weather agency raised typhoon warnings, stranding thousands of people in ports as airlines canceled flights and ferries were prevented from sailing. Officials warned of storm surges in coastal villages, flash floods and landslides, and asked villagers to evacuate to safer grounds. Christmas is the biggest holiday in the Philippines, which has Asia’s

largest Roman Catholic population, making it difficult for officials to get people’s attention to heed the warnings. With many refusing to leave high-risk communities, some officials said they decided to carry out forced evacuations. In the past 65 years, seven typhoons have struck the Philippines on Christmas Day, according to the government’s weather agency. Gov. Miguel Villafuerte of Camarines Sur province, which is in the typhoon’s forecast path, offered roast pigs, a popular Christmas delicacy locally called “lechon,” in evacuation centers to entice villagers to move to emergency shelters. “I know it’s Christmas ... but this is a legit typhoon,” Villafuerte tweeted on Christmas Eve. “Please

evacuate, we’ll be having lechon at evacuation centers.” Camarines Sur officials targeted about 50,000 families — some 250,000 people — for evacuation by Saturday night, but the number of those who responded was initially far below expectations. In Catanduanes province, Vice Gov. Shirley Abundo said she had ordered a forced evacuation of villagers, saying some “are really hard-headed, they don’t want to leave their houses because it’s Christmas.” “We need to do this by force, we need to evacuate them now,” she told ABSCBN television. The Department of Social Welfare and Development, which helps oversee government response during disasters, said only about 4,200

people were reported to have moved to six evacuation centers by Sunday morning in the Bicol region, which includes Camarines Sur. “It’s difficult to force celebrations when our lives will be put at risk.
