When it’s comedy time, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ rules

NEW YORK — No one is coming close to challenging “The Big Bang Theory” when Americans turn on prime-time television in search of a few laughs. The Nielsen company’s ratings last week illustrate the CBS comedy’s dominance. Nielsen said 15.2 million people watched “The Big Bang Theory” on Thursday, far above the second most-popular sitcom, ABC’s “Modern Family,” which had 8.4 million viewers. The Chuck Lorre-created comedy about socially challenged brainiacs is headed toward some memorable episodes, with Jim Parsons’ character, Sheldon Cooper, about to consummate his romance with Amy, played by Mayim Bialik.

“The Big Bang Theory” is also the most popular sitcom among viewers ages 18- to 49-years-old, although the gap with “Modern Family” is narrower. The bench strength for televised sitcoms has to be concerning for television executives. At NBC, ancestral home of “Cheers,” ‘’Friends” and “Seinfeld,” the mostwatched sitcom last week was “Undateable,” a Friday-night show with 2.7 million viewers. Jimmy Fallon often draws that many viewers late at night.

The American Music Awards led ABC to its best Sunday-night showing since last spring, although its audience of 11 million viewers was a dip from last year’s 11.6 million, Nielsen said. CBS won the week in prime time, averaging 8.4 million viewers. NBC had 7.7 million viewers and was the most popular network among 18- to 49-year-old viewers. ABC had 7.1 million, Fox had 5.3 million, Univision had 2.4 million, the CW had 1.49 million, Telemundo had 1.48 million and ION Television had 1.2 million. ESPN was the week’s most popular cable network, averaging 2.88 million viewers in prime time. Fox News Channel had 2.27 million, Hallmark had 1.88 million, USA had 1.61 million and TBS had 1.56 million. During a busy news week, NBC’s “Nightly News” topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.6 million viewers. ABC’s “World News Tonight” was second with 9.2 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 8 million viewers. regional bylaws and the bhisama (regulations) of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) all have similar definitions for “sacred area” according to the Hindus of Bali. Such areas include mountains, hills, lakes, springs, estuaries, tributaries, seas and beaches. “The regional bylaw on spatial planning (RTRW) of Badung County 2013-2033

Team member, Kadek Suardana, mentioned that one of the estuaries or loloan considered especially sacred is Loloan Gredeg and also mentioned several muntig or mounds that also qualify as sacred: Muntig Tanggal, Muntig Campuhan, Muntig Sanggah Cucuk and Muntig Cenik. “There is also Pura Karang Tengah. Actually the only temple in the middle or bottom of Benoa Bay is invisible and no one knows its exact location is. Also, the waters of Karang Tengah are used as the location for mulang pakelem or animal sacrifice s because its waters are deep,” he said. Suardana added that the results of their research also records another 22 points in the Benoa Bay area that are listed a sacred. One of them is the Taru Agung that takes the form of a mangrove tree. There is a local belief that as long as this

tree remains to grow, people in the surrounding area will continue to able to earn their livelihood form the bay. Of all the temples in Tanjung Benoa, Pura Gaing-Gaing is the most sacred because it represents Pura Karang Tengah. “Pura Suwung Deluang, is believed to be the most haunted temple. There is a true story of a local resident who died right as he was trying to remove a mangrove tree from there,” said Suardana. Chairman of the expert council of the Central PHDI, Putu Wirata Dwikora, said that the Benoa Bay case has become a concern of the PHDI. Results of the sabha walaka assembly have declared that Benoa Bay is a sacred area. However, the results of this assembly do not necessarily determine the decision of the sabha pandita or advisory council of the PHDI who hold the highest

decision making authority within the PHDI. “When the high priests established Team 9, we breathed a sigh of relief with the hope that at least there would be decision made to determine Benoa Bay as a sacred area,” said Dwikora. He is asking the Balinese people not be pessimistic because so far the Team 9 has not made any decision about Benoa Bay. The role of the sabha walaka is to help deepen the study of sulinggih in Team 9. Balinese people are also being asked to accompany Team 9 in their decision making process. “High priests need convincing based on theoretical studies, and this will support the presentation of facts to them. There are indeed many sacred places in Benoa Bay, such as estuaries, confluence and temples. There are different types of temples one of which’s sanctum is supported by several communities (hamlets). So, we think that these facts will help the high priest in the sabha pandita and Team 9 be convinced that this is in fact a sacred area,” he explained. (rin)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Health risk of loneliness has physiological basis

MIAMI - A healthy food for one person may lead another to gain weight, according to a study out Thursday that suggests a one-size-fits-all approach to dieting is fundamentally wrong. For instance, one woman in the study repeatedly experienced a spike in blood sugar after eating tomatoes, which would generally be considered a low-fat, nutritious food. The findings are based a study of 800 people in Israel, and are published in the journal Cell Press. “The first very big surprise and striking finding that we had was the very vast variability we saw in people’s response to identical meals,” said researcher Eran Segal of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Participants wore blood sugar monitors that took measurements every five minutes for an entire week.

They also provided stool samples so that their gut microbiome could be analyzed, and kept a careful log of everything they consumed. None of the participants had diabetes, but some were obese and had a condition known as pre-diabetes. Researchers were stunned to see the difference in people’s metabolic responses to the exact same foods. For instance, some people’s blood sugar rose higher after eating sushi than it did after eating ice cream. And for one middle-aged woman, the act of eating tomatoes -- which she thought were part of a healthy diet -- actually

caused her blood sugar to rise significantly. “There are profound differences between individuals -- in some cases, individuals have opposite responses to one another -- and this is really a big hole in the literature,” said Segal.

What we eat

High blood sugar is dangerous because it can lead to diabetes, obesity, heart problems and other complications, including eye, kidney and nerve disease. Many diets aim to keep blood sugar low by incorporating fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates like brown rice and whole grains, while avoiding refined sugars and goods made with white flour. But those recommendations don’t work for everyone, and often, overweight people are

blamed for eating too much or not sticking to a healthy lifestyle. Co-author Eran Elinav said the study “really enlightened us on how inaccurate we all were about one of the most basic concepts of our existence, which is what we eat and how we integrate nutrition into our daily life.” Instead of urging people to eat low-fat diets, a more personalized approach -- one that puts an individual at the center of the plan, rather than the diet -- could be useful to help people control high blood sugar and improve their health, he said. The researchers also used their findings to forge an algorithm that could predict how different people would react to certain foods, based on a host of personal characteristics and their gut microbes. WASHINGTON - Loneliness can increase the risk of premature death by 14 percent in older adults, according to a study published Monday that posits a physiological basis for the phenomenon. The dangers of social isolation have long been known but its effects on the body have not been well understood, the researchers said in the work published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences/PNAS. Led by University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo, the research team had previously identified a link between solitude and both a heightened expression of genes involved in inflammation and a diminution in the activity of other genes that play a role in the body’s antiviral responses. The result is a weakened immune systems that makes a person who lives alone more vulnerable to illness. In their latest research, the researchers looked at leukocytes, white blood cells that the immune system uses to protect against bacteria and viruses. They found the same shift in genetic expression in the white blood cells of people who lived alone and in social isolation. They also found that loneliness predicted the gene behavior a year or more in advance -- and conversely that gene expression predicted loneliness measured a year or more later. “Leukocyte gene expression and loneliness appear to have a reciprocal relationship, suggesting that each can help propagate the other over time,” the researchers said. “These results were specific to loneliness and could not be explained by depression, stress or social support,” they said. The investigators then studied rhesus macaques, a highly social primate, and found a similar cellular process linked to their social experience. “Lonely-like” monkeys had increased gene expression involved in inflammation and less gene expression in antiviral defenses. They were also found to have higher levels of noreprinephrine, a “fight-orflight” neurotransmitter that stimulates the production of immature monocytes, a white blood cell with high inflammation/ low antiviral defense gene expression. “Both lonely humans and ‘lonely like’ monkeys showed higher levels of monocytes in their blood,” the researchers said. Other studies showed that the increased production of immature monocytes was amplifying the high inflammation/low antiviral effect in the pool of white blood cells. “The ‘danger signals’ activated in the brain by loneliness ultimately affect the production of white blood cells,” they said. “The resulting shift in monocyte output may both propagate loneliness and contribute to its associated health risks.” (afp)

Bali Governor opposes Shariah tourism idea

DENPASAR - Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika expressed disagreement to the idea of developing Shariah tourism on the island, citing fears that it could create potential problems. “I did not agree with it. It will only create problems. Just leave it as it is for now. It has all been going well so far,” he stated after attending a plenary meeting of the regional legislative assembly on Tuesday. He pointed out that tourism in Bali has flourished so far. “Let us not think of strange ideas. It will only create problems. The people have lived peacefully under current conditions so far,” he emphasized. Chairman of the Shariah Economic Community (MES) Muliaman D. Hadad stated recently after inducting the MES Bali chapter that Bali is the right destination for developing Shariah tourism. “Bali is fit (for Shariah tourism). So, why not (develop it here). Seven million domestic tourists come to Bali in addition to three million foreign tourists. So, perhaps, there are businessmen here who wish to introduce it in cooperation with the regional government,” he affirmed. He said that Islam-based tourism has not only been developed in Arab countries but has also been promoted in Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. He pointed out that Thailand had recently won the title of the world’s best Islamic health service tourist destination at an event held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. “This is indeed a business opportunity that needs to be tapped. In several cities, Islamic hotels and health service centers have already mushroomed. We have no other intention than to tap the business opportunity. We are talking about religion but also to boost the economy,” he remarked. Hadad, who is also chairman of the country’s Financial Service Authority (OJK), said the Shariah economy adopts approaches based on the concept of common welfare, so that it could be used by anyone, regardless of their religious background. People reject ‘sharia tourism’ in Bali

DENPASAR - People from several organizations held a peaceful gathering at Bali’s Parliament Building on Tuesday (Nov.24), to protest against ‘sharia tourism’. Members of organizations such as Cakrawayu, the Indonesia Association of Hindu Dharma Students (KMHDI), the Eling Nusantara Foundation, the Hindu Network Foundation, the Center for Hindu Coordination of Indonesian (Puskor Hindunesia), Buldog and Gases Sesetan were present to voice their concerns. Chairman of Puskor Hindunesia, Ida Bagus Susena, said that the idea of imposing ‘sharia tourism’ in Bali runs contrary to Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.2/2012 on Cultural Tourism. His organization will therefor be sending a letter to the Minister of Tourism and other relevant parties reminding them of this bylaw and other factors, with the aim of having tourism in Bali remain focused on Bali’s Hindusim inspired culture. “We do hope that the parliament can be a little sensitive to these issues. When we see the many issues that are affecting Bali these days, it would appear that the parliament is not acting as the people’s representatives, therefore the people of Bali need to act independently to reject those things that are not suitable, rather than simply remain powerless. Hope-

fully, the legislators still have the guts to maintain Bali and not just see sitting in parliament as a job opportunity but actually voice the aspirations of the people,” he said. Deputy Chairman of Cakrawayu, I.B. Adnyana, said that Bali does not need to label ‘sharia’ to attract tourists, especially considering that this concept implies a particular ideology. Adnyana added that he does not want to see this ideology disintegrate Balinese people. “The parliament should oversee the implementation of the Regional Bylaw on Cultural Tourism properly. This bylaw will surely be complied with, if the government chooses to oversee its application. Since there is a kind of violation going on, it needs to be called out,” he added. In terms of benefit to state foreign exchange earnings, we also note that ‘sharia tourism’ is not able to be the kind of tourism that will contribute to the country,” he said. Putra added that the fact is that the cultural tourism of Bali provides massive contributions to the state. SEMARAPURA - The endeavor of the government of Klungkung to attract people to read in the public library is not yet fully succeeded. As evidence, the condition of the Klungkung Library and Archive Office still looked deserted, Tuesday (Nov. 24). The number of visitors coming to the library only reached 5,280 people per year even though the number of people in the population to be served reaches 169,380 people per year. Not to mention, many bookshelves are now in damaged condition. The Head of the Klungkung Library and Archives, Putu Sadia, admitted on Tuesday that the number of visitors coming to the library remains low. However, he argued that the lack of visitors to the library is caused by several factors. One of the problems faced is the lack of human resources in the library. So far, the library office has only 21 employees. They cannot be moved to different shift because they respectively have their own tasks. “Ideally we have more than 30 employees,” said Putu Sadia. Other than human resource factor, Putu Sadia also recognized that the collection of books owned by the library is also limited. Until now, the number

CANBERRA — A third ship will join the deep sea hunt for a missing Malaysian airliner as the 13-month-old search of a huge expanse of the Indian Ocean ramps up during the southern hemisphere summer, officials said Wednesday. The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was scaled back to two ships towing sonar equipment during the winter when the remote target area more than 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) southwest of Australia was buffeted by gale-force winds and mountainous waves. The search has covered more than 70,000 square kilometers (27,000 square miles) since it began in October last year based on analysis of scant satellite information that tracked Flight 370’s final flight on March 8 last year. The Fugro Discovery had managed only six days of searching the 120,000-square-kilometer (46,000-square-mile) priority area before it was forced back again for medical help. DAMASCUS — A Russian military pilot whose plane was shot down by Turkey and crashed in Syria arrived on Wednesday at an air base in Latakia province after being rescued by a Syrian army commando unit, Syrian and Russian officials said. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told Russian news agencies that the man was rescued in a 12-hour operation which ended in the early hours on Wednesday and is now “safe and sound” at Russia’s air base in the government-controlled area in Syria. Turkey shot down the Russian warplane on Tuesday, saying it ignored repeated warnings after crossing into its airspace from Syria. One of the two pilots was killed and captured by Syrian rebels who said they were searching for the other. The incident inflamed tensions between Turkey and Russia, and Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of “significant consequences.” A statement from the Syrian armed forces on Wednesday said a special unit carried out overnight a “qualitative” operation with the Russian forces and rescued one of the two pilots. Russian President Vladimir Putin also confirmed a second pilot has been rescued. In a statement carried by Syria’s official news agency SANA, the army said the Syrian and Russian forces penetrated into the areas where “terrorists” are entrenched at a depth of 4.5 kilometers and rescued the pilot. It said he is in “good health.” Russia’s ambassador to France also said that the second pilot is in the hands of the Syrian army. Ambassador Alexander Orlov said on Europe-1 radio that one of the pilots was wounded, then killed on the ground by “jihadists.” He said the other “managed to escape and be rescued by the Syrian army.” He didn’t elaborate. Orlov accused Turkey of being an “accomplice” of Islamic State extremists and playing an ambiguous role in Syria’s civil war. However he played down concerns of escalation of violence among the international players involved in Syria. The dollar was also hit by an unexpected drop in US consumer confidence in November from the previous month, despite an upward revision of economic growth. A rally in crude prices helped boost the Malaysian ringgit by more than half a percent against the dollar, as analysts warned the jet shooting could further heighten tensions among key powers involved in the Syrian conflict and affect crude supplies from the oil-producing Middle East. Oil is a key Malaysian export. The dollar also lost ground against some other emerging currencies including the South Korean won, Indonesia’s rupiah and the Taiwan dollar. Responding to this problem, the Director of PDAM Karangasem, Gede T Baktiyasa, did not deny it, in Karangasem, Tuesday (Nov. 24). He said that such condition has almost happened every dry season. The problem, he said, that every dry season, the water discharge of spring tapped down by PDAM declines by 20 percent. “Water discharge of the artesian wells in Manggis was formerly five liters per second and now reduces to only about three liters,” he added. He admitted the water supply to customers in Amlapura is often sluggish so that he pleased customers to understand and be patient. Water consumption must be saved because the production cost is expensive. Water needs of our community are getting more and more, while its water discharge at the source reduces in drought. Water source to supply Amlapura and surrounding areas is just from the spring at Tauka, Tirtagangga and Embukan Ababi. “Discharge of spring for customers in town has diminished. Three subdistricts namely Selat, Sidemen and Rendang are good because it has been helped with the water from Telaga Waja River,” he said. Related to the unrest of residents in Manggis, especially at Antiga, it is caused by crashed water supplies because the source is limited. Manggis only has one artesian well as the source of raw water.

Prolonged dry season has caused the water flow of artesian well to decrease, where it reduced from five liters per second to three liters. Later, the PDAM will optimize the springs at Embukan, Ababi. “In Manggis we will also test new artesian wells. With the investment of new artesian wells, we need budget to buy a pump, an increase in power and expenses of the test valued at IDR 600 million to IDR 700 million,” said Spokesman of the PDAM Karangasem, Made Supartha. Regarding the water supply crisis at the PDAM Kubu, especially at Baturinggit village happened because the artesian wells at Rubaya have long dried up. Later, it will be made a new artesian well. However, the investment of making new artesian well is available in 2016. “Two tests of artesian well will be made in Kubu on the land owned by the PDAM namely at Batudawa and Tianyar,” said Made Supartha. The management has held a meeting to discuss about grievances like at Antiga Kaler, and the water grant implementation project from central government led by Regional Secretary of Karangasem a few days ago. He added that this year Karangasem get 1,500 water grant connections from central government worth IDR 1.6 billion. Realization of the connection is still in process. (013)

generation. “The law of central government on the protection of historic objects has existed. Well, it now depends on local government whether it is willing to implement it or not and this is the problem. The idea of city tour has been frequently initiated,

Ukraine closes its airspace to Russia MOSCOW — Ukraine’s prime minister says his government has decided to close the country’s airspace to all Russian planes. Ukraine last month banned all Russian airlines from flying into Ukraine but Russian planes have been allowed to fly over its territory. The decision to shut the airspace was announced by Arseny Yatsenyuk at a televised government session on Wednesday. It comes as

tensions simmer between Russia and Ukraine following Russia’s annexation of Crimea last year and a separatist war in eastern Ukraine which has killed more than 8,000 people and left parts of the industrial heartland in ruins. BRUSSELS — After a four-day shutdown prompted by a threat alert across Brussels, schools are reopening their doors with the help of beefed up security, including police armed with machine guns. Though the Belgian capital continues to be under the highest-level threat alert, meaning that an attack is serious and imminent, schools and subways began reopening across the city on Wednesday. That is restoring a sense of normality to the city, parts of which have been deserted since the alert was first raised to the top level in the capital on Saturday. The threat level is expected to be in place until at least Monday unless there are significant developments, like the capturing of suspects linked to the Paris attacks on Nov. 13. At Brussels’ College SaintJean-Berchmans, some parents gave their children a quick kiss before dropping them off, while several police officers guarded the entrance, including one with a visible machine gun. Among the students at the school is Belgium’s Princess Eleonore. “I’m concerned, but I think that life must go on,” said Dimitri De Cra Yencour, a father of four. “Even if something happens in Paris or

SEOUL, South Korea — A new nuclear treaty with the United States governing South Korea’s commercial nuclear activities during the next 20 years went into effect Wednesday, the South Korean government said. The treaty, which replaces a previous accord reached in 1972, opens the possibility of South Korea gaining the ability to enrich uranium to produce non-weaponsgrade nuclear fuel depending on future negotiations with the United States. The new treaty took effect after South Korea’s foreign minister and the U.S. ambassador exchanged documents in Seoul, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The countries agreed to the revised treaty in April after spending several years arguing over whether South Korea should have the right to enrich and reprocess U.S.-origin nuclear fuel for commercial purposes.

The revised deal does not give South Korea that right, but provides for establishment of a high-level committee to further discuss the issue, which Seoul officials described as a step toward potential consent. South Korea has been seeking the ability to enrich uranium to produce nuclear fuel, which it says will help reduce import costs and support its exports of nuclear reactors. It also wants to be able to reprocess spent fuel to reduce its growing amounts of nuclear waste. The U.S. restricts such activities because the same technologies can be used to produce weapons-grade nuclear fuel, and because of fears that supporting South Korea’s enrichment ambitions might send the wrong signal to North Korea, which is developing its own nuclear weapons program. The revised deal also gives more leeway to South Korea for research activities and data collection related to spent fuel.(ap)

Sports Ministry to develop 470 football fields in villages JAKARTA - The youth and sports ministry will develop at least 470 football fields in villages to encourage young people to play the sport. “So far, we have received several complaints regarding the lack of sports facilities in rural areas. This program is one of the government’s efforts to improve the management of football in the nation,” Deputy V Gatot S. Dewa Broto in charge of harmony and partnership of the youth and sport ministry noted on Wednesday. Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi has designated the “one village one football field” program since he took charge of the ministerial post. The AFC and FIFA were informed about the program when the two organizations’ leaders met President Joko Widodo recently. During the first stage, some 100 football fields will be built, and the rest will follow until the end of this year, Broto revealed. “The development will definitely be carried out in stages, and the number will be increased until 2019. LONDON - Britain will attempt to win the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years this weekend when they take on Belgium in Ghent, although if they do succeed the Scottish town of Dunblane could argue its name should be enscribed on the trophy. World number two Andy Murray and his brother Jamie, who grew up in Dunblane, have propelled Britain through the draw, with Andy churning out vital singles wins and teaming up with his elder sibling in the doubles. That is likely to be the scenario again at the Flanders Expo, beginning on Friday, where despite 13,000 home fans trying to cheer Belgium to their first ever Davis Cup, Britain will start favourites. Twice grand slam champion Andy Murray is the class act of the final -- a repeat of the 1904 match when the British Isles won 5-0 with brothers Laurence and Reggie Doherty starring. Murray’s commitment to the cause this year has been immense. The 2013 Wimbledon champion is undefeated, winning two singles against the United States in Glasgow in March.

Against France in the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club, the Murrays joined forces to win the doubles with Andy winning both his singles in a 3-1 victory -- the second against Gilles Simon when he was down on both knees with fatigue. Then came the semi-final against Australia, again in Glasgow, when the 28-year-old crushed Bernard Tomic, having won a gripping doubles five-setter with Jamie the previous day, to send Britain into the final for the first time since 1978. He flew into Belgium on Monday -- a country on high alert after the Paris attacks -- having lost two of his three matches at the ATP World Tour Finals last week. How he adapts to the quick switch to indoor clay will be crucial for Britain captain Leon Smith. “The reality is that if Andy gets injured or ill, then it would be a very difficult match to win,” Mark Cox, who played for Britain in the 1978 final, told Reuters. “Leon has done well to bond the team and get some performances from James Ward, well beyond what realistically would be expected.

“But the whole run to the final has relied on Andy’s performances and it has been great to see Jamie rising to the challenge and becoming a force in doubles.” Roger Federer, who won the trophy for the first time last year for Switzerland, believes Murray will decide the tie. “Britain are the favourites, in my opinion, because they have Andy in the team,” he said. Federer, however, believes Belgium should not be dismissed, especially with world number 16 David Goffin in their ranks. “Belgium are at home. I really like Goffin, a great player. Good attitude. I feel like he’s the kind of guy that can handle pressure,” he said. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said he and striker Diego Costa have made up with “kisses and cuddles” after their halftime row in Tuesday’s 4-0 Champions League win over Israeli opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv. The pair appeared to be engaged in an angry exchange of views as they headed towards the players’ tunnel at halftime. Mourinho took issue with Costa’s lack of movement in the first-half but the Spain international went on to finish the match after the 52-year-old Portuguese displayed a more tender side in the dressing room. Costa was involved in the major flashpoint of the first-half, after he was chopped down by

a terrible challenge from Maccabi’s Tal Ben Haim, which led to the former Chelsea defender receiving his marching orders. “With Diego I wanted him to do a certain movement that he didn’t and I was disappointed and reacted and he reacted too, but at halftime in the dressing room there were a few kisses and cuddles,” Mourinho told reporters after the game. TWENTE - Aldo van der Laan has resigned as president of Twente Enschede amid accusations the club breached the Dutch football association’s (KNVB) rules and risk losing their operating licence. Cash-strapped Twente confirmed the resignation in a statement on their website (www. fctwente.nl) on Wednesday. “The interests of the club have always been paramount and these are now under threat. The continuing doubts are damaging FC Twente,” the statement said. Local media had earlier reported that leaked documents from Twente suggested the club had entered into an agreement with an investment company that contravened KNVB rules. The association has called in their licensing commission to

investigate. “The contract published seems to differ from what we know,” KNVB spokesman Hans van Kastel told reporters. If found guilty, Twente face punishments ranging from a fine to a points deduction, relegation to the second tier or potentially the cancellation of their license to operate in the top two tiers of Dutch football.
