Traders complain about prolonged dry season Bali Post

DENPASAR - Prolonged dry season followed by fuel price hike makes many people uneasy on responding to the commodity prices, without exception for traders. Congestion around the Badung and Denpasar region has become daily spectacle and it slows down the distribution of goods. Traders and consumers are unable to do much to anticipate it. Based on a survey at the Badung Market on Monday (Nov 24), the prices of commodity were estimated to rise ahead of Galungan and Kuningan feast. So far, the price of imported fruits already rose, while no local fruits were available at the market as beyond their season. The only local fruit available was mango sold for IDR 10,000 per kilogram. Tangerine formerly sold at IDR 10,000 per kg already increased to IDR 18,000 per kg. Imported fruits such as Fuji apple formerly sold for IDR 25,000 per kg already rose to IDR 35,000 per kg. Banana as a mandatory fruit used to fill in ritual oblation always increased where the plantain and stony

banana were sold for IDR 2,000 - IDR 2,500 each. Meanwhile, per cluster it was sold for IDR 250,000 - IDR 350,000. “It is feared the prices will rise again before holiday as the supply of goods reduces and then the price increase is irreversible,” said a trader at the Badung Market Denpasar, Mrs. Sudarmi from Sibang Gede who had been selling there for 30 years. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Stealthy spy software snooping for years

SAN FRANSISCO - Computer security firm Symantec on Monday said it uncovered stealthy software wielded as part of a years-long spying campaign, most likely by a nation state. The malicious software, dubbed Regin, has a rare level of sophistication and has been targeting government agencies, telecoms, utilities, airlines, research facilities, private individuals and others since at least 2008, according to Symantec Corporation. Attacks on telecom firms appeared aimed at getting access to

value for farmers. He said if the commodity is transformed into industrial products, it would further benefit farmers, traders, and other parties as the product can be preserved for a longer time. The minister noted that the shortage in chili supply has led to the increase in the price of the commodity. The taste of chili produce differs across regions such as from Sumatra, Kalimantan to Sulawesi, thereby proving to be more beneficial to the farmers if they can process it into products for wider markets and exports. With regard to that, he called on Iwapi members to play a bigger role in developing agricultural products, such as chili, which have huge potential in the country. “We hope Iwapi that has signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation with the ministry of trade would follow up the deal seriously and meet the target,” he added.

SINGARAJA - Potential for the tangerine cultivation in Buleleng is quite promising. A number of farmers at Asah Panji hamlet, Wanagiri village, Sukasada subdistrict, are intensifying the production of tangerine. Their target market remains to be focused on local markets in Bali. Nevertheless, some farmers hope their tangerine product can increase every year, while some kinds of disease during the growth of tangerine fruits can be diminished. One of the local tangerine farmers, Wayan Sukarma, 43, said the tangerine production tended to increase. It was dominantly sold by residents to the markets in Buleleng and Denpasar. He explained that Asah Panji hamlet had a woman farmer group named Sari Amerta Giri. The price of tangerine at farmer level ranged from IDR 4,000 to IDR 6,000 per kilogram. Local farmers often implemented intercropping systems namely a combination of coffee and tangerine.

They took advantage of tangerine harvested once a year. “I am still applying the intercropping system. So far, I have harvested tangerine for nearly five times with an estimated harvest of once a year. We plan to withdraw our tangerine plants to be replaced with coffee plants. When wishing to grow tangerine, it must be done on new land. It happens because we face obstacles related to the land and the tangerine disease after harvesting for several years,” he said, Monday (Nov 24). Tangerine cultivation was often attacked by some kinds of specific diseases such as the symptom of citrus vein phloem degeneration (CVPD) attack, in which the part of leaf turned yellow, thicker and harder, while the leaf was dominantly dark green. The other diseases included fungus known as Oidium Tingitanium, where the leaves were covered in flour-like layer and another disease was wet Diplodia. “Local people mostly cultivate tangerine,” said another farmer, Kadek Dharma, 35. “The increase in bus ticket price has occurred since the past four days, a day after the announcement of the fuel price hike by the president. However, some companies still do not raise their ticket price,” said the management of Organda Bali, Bagus Budi, met at Ubung Terminal, Denpasar. He said the government wanted the increase in bus ticket by 10 percent, but the Land Transportation Organization (Organda) wanted an increase of 30 percent. The bus transportation companies were confused to set the ticket price because there had been no certainty from the government related to the official ticket price. “Actually, the price of spare parts has increased as well as the crossing at Gilimanuk increased from IDR 490,000 to IDR 540,000. Likewise, the allowance of driver and conductor also increased,” he told reporter of Antara in Denpasar.

Bagus Budi, the Field Coordinator of Restu Mulya bus company, also explained that although some bus companies had increased their ticket price, his company remained to sell ticket at the old price. “It is taken because there has been no definite decision from the government and Organda about the magnitude of the ticket price increase to be enforced,” he said. According to him, Restu Mulya remained to sell ticket at the old price. However, passengers usually getting a discounted rate could no longer get it for executive class. The move was narrowly passed in a 5-4 vote among board members. The decision, which came days after the US Federal Reserve wound down its own stimulus, has sent the yen plunging to multi-year lows against the dollar and euro while pushing equities to highs not seen since before the global financial crisis. However, critics on the policy board questioned “the sustainability of its effects” and said the impact of fresh measures on the world’s number three economy -- and the BoJ’s drive to hit a 2.0 percent inflation target -- “would

not be large”. They also said it could “considerably” squeeze liquidity in Japanese government bond markets. One member warned that the yen’s weakness would batter small domestic firms, which are facing soaring import costs. SEOUL - Higher US interest rates or a sharp rise in the dollar could pose challenges to East Asia’s local-currency bond markets, the Asian Development Bank warned Tuesday. While the markets have shown themselves to be resilient, the Manilabased lender said in its quarterly Asia Bond Monitor that their composition left them vulnerable to external influences. “Higher US rates and a stronger dollar could prove a challenge given increased foreign holdings of Asia’s bonds, which could easily reverse, and record US dollar bond issuance by the region’s companies,” said Iwan Azis, the head of ADB’s Office of Regional Economic Integration. US dollar debt becomes more expensive to service in local currency terms when the dollar appreciates.

Markets currently anticipate no US interest rate rise before the middle of next year, but the ADB said a swifterthan-expected improvement in the US economy could bring that forward. The quarterly report also noted that companies in East Asia may have trouble raising local-currency capital because of stricter rules requiring banks to reduce holdings of riskier bonds. “There are concerns that liquidity conditions are tightening because the higher capital requirements under Basel III regulations have pushed banks to reduce their holdings of bonds,” the ADB said.

JAKARTA - A 73-year-old Japanese man has been arrested in western Indonesia for allegedly attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine into the country, an offence punishable by death, police said Monday. He was detained Saturday when his flight from Malaysia landed in the city of Padang, on Sumatra island, and customs officials found 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) of the drug hidden in his bag, they said. “He claimed that he was not aware that (the bag) contained

illegal drugs,” said Padang police official Untung Suropati. The man, whom police did not identify, had travelled to China, Macau and Malaysia before arriving in Indonesia, Suropati said. “He could face the death penalty if a court finds him guilty of smuggling illegal drugs,” he added. Yushi Suzuki, Japanese vice-consul in the city of Medan on Sumatra, confirmed that the detained man was a Japanese passport holder. Indonesia enforces stiff penalties for drug trafficking, including life imprisonment

and death. Foreigners are frequently arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the country, although most are caught on the popular holiday island of Bali. A Frenchman was jailed for 15 years in July for attempting to smuggle a huge stash of crystal methamphetamine into Bali at the beginning of the year.

BAGHDAD — Baghdad’s neighborhood of Gorayaat, a small Shiite enclave on a bend in the Tigris River, exemplifies the failures of Iraq’s security agencies trying to protect the capital from attacks by the Islamic State. The district has been a target for years, hit by so many bombings, suicide attacks, rockets and mortars that residents have lost count. After a car bomb ripped through its main commercial street earlier this month, killing 15 people and wounding 42, security forces responded as they have after every previous attack. Soldiers and police swarmed in to secure Gorayaat’s streets. At checkpoints, they checked people’s IDs, and anyone who was not a resident had to account for his presence. “That goes on for one or two days, then it’s back to normal and we wait for the next bombing,” said Idris Jawad, a resident. For months, Islamic State group militants have hammered Baghdad with bombings and suicide attacks, the work of dozens of cells operating in the Iraqi capital, officials say. Security agencies have floundered trying to stop them, relying on techniques that haven’t changed — or succeeded — in a decade. The government is now trying to revamp security measures, moving away from reliance on concrete blast walls and police checkpoints. Instead, the plan is to beef up police intelligence units that have gone understaffed and underfunded since the 2003 fall of Saddam Hussein, according to intelligence and Interior Ministry officials.

Among the ideas being considered is to significantly increase the recruitment of informers among the public to report on suspicious behavior, the ministry official told The Associated Press. That would mean recruiting Sunnis, something that has been difficult in the past. Sunnis deeply distrust the Shiite-dominated security forces, which they often accuse of discriminating against their co-religionists. Moreover, the security forces are known to be infiltrated by both Sunni and Shiite militants, meaning that anyone who cooperates with authorities against militants risks being exposed. The Interior Ministry official and two intelligence officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the steps under discussion. Interior Ministry spokesman Maan Saad said a large shipment of new, U.S.-made bomb-detection equipment is arriving soon in Iraq. “It will be very useful and effective in minimizing the terrorist threats against Iraqis,” he said, refusing to give details of the technology or the cost.

It is estimated the name of Tampaksiring is originated in Balinese words tampak (sole) and siring means “tilting.” Allegedly, the meaning of both words is associated with a piece of the legend of explicit and implicit in a palm leaf manuscript stating the name derived from the former traces the feet belonged to a king named Mayadenawa. According to “Mayadanawantaka” palm-leaf manuscript, this king was the son of Bhagavan Kasyapa with Goddess Danu. It can be known from the existence of a stone plaque at Manukaya Village containing text and figures saying that Tirta Empul was established in the fourth month of Caka Year 884 or around October 962 AD, while Pura Tirta Empul was built during the reign of King Masula Masuli ruling in Bali starting from 1100 Caka Year or 1178 AD, for 77 years.
