U.S. rapper Eminem wins copyright case against NZ political ads SYDNEY - A New Zealand political party has been ordered to pay more than $400,000 to U.S. rapper Eminem for using music similar to his 2002 hit “Lose Yourself” in a television commercial to help win a national election. The track, played during the National Party’s successful 2014 election campaign and titled “Eminem Esque”, was found by a New Zealand court to have “substantially copied” Lose Yourself. The National Party used the song 186 times during the campaign before taking the ad off the air, the court said. “This decision is a warning to sound-alike music producers and their clients everywhere,” Adam Simpson, director of Simpsons Solicitors, who acted for Eminem’s music company, Eight Mile Style, said in a statement. The National Party said the music was licensed with one of New Zealand’s main industry copyright bodies, the Australasian Mechani-
cal Copyright Owners Society (AMCOS). “Being licensed and available for purchase, and having taken advice from our suppliers, the party believed the purchase was legal,” National Party President Peter Goodfellow said in a statement. “The party is now considering the implications of the judgment and the next steps. We already have a claim against the suppliers and licensors of the track.” The court found Eight Mile Style was entitled to damages of NZ$600,000 ($413,000) with interest from June 28, 2014. “We anticipate that all the defendants will meet to discuss the implications of the decision in the very near future,” copyright body AMCOS said in an email, hailing the decision as an important first step towards resolution of the matter. The publisher had exclusive control over the song, and rarely gave permission for its use in advertising, the court said. (rtr)

U.S. Halloween princesses make way for Wonder Woman, pink ‘pussyhats’
NEW YORK - This Halloween, expect to open the door to more pink pussyhats and fewer princesses. Months after the historic women’s march on Washington and in the midst of the “#MeToo” sexual harassment outcry, Halloween 2017 is becoming yet another platform in the United States for women and girls to show strength.

This year’s most-searched Halloween costume is Wonder Woman, according to Google’s Frightgeist search tool. Star Wars heroine Rey, the selfreliant young woman who shines as a survivor against all odds, is among the film series’ characters who rank in the top 10 children’s costumes for 2017, according to the National Retail Federation. And, makers of homemade costumes this year are getting online tips for re-purposing pink “pussyhats.” They were worn by many of the hundreds of thousands of women who took part in marches in Washington and other U.S. cities on Jan. 21, the day after Donald
Trump’s inauguration as president, to denounce his years-ago boast about grabbing women’s genitals. “The year or more of sexual harassment scandals has shifted people’s thinking about what they want to become on Halloween,” said Barnard College Psychology Professor Tovah Klein. “Costumes empower children - as in ‘I can be strong, I can be invincible, I can fight for justice.’ And right now, with Wonder Woman and other characters, girls are embracing this strong side,” Klein said. Raising her light saber, 9-yearold Abby of Maplewood, New Jersey, demonstrated her warrior
stance dressed as Rey, a steel-colored cloth crossed over her chest, with pants to match her tunic. “I feel more brave when I’m Rey,” said Abby, a fourth-grader who has celebrated Halloweens past by dressing up as princesses. “I like Rey more than princesses. She’s very tough. She’s fighting. She’s helping a lot of other people survive,” said Abby, whose parents asked that her last name be withheld for privacy. More than 179 million people in the United States will celebrate Halloween 2017, spending a record high of $9.1 billion, with the largest outlay on costumes, the retail federation said. (rtr)

Due to wide reaching impact of long wait
Governor hopes that warning level of MT. Agung will decrease
DENPASAR - After more than a month of Mt. Agung being at alert warning level status various impacts are being felt from economic to psychological to health and education. The highest mountain in Bali has not erupted and conditions are very different than they were when the mountain last erupted in 1963 when there was no technology to help people handle the threat. “Necessarily, with early detection, warning system as well as the advancement of transportation and communication technology, it (warning status—Ed) should be decreased because if things are left like this the impact is very long”, said Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, after attending the Plenary Session in the Bali House of Representatives on Tuesday (Oct. 24). According to Pastika, evacuees are showing signs of saturation and there is also the matter of the pending updating of election data. Building materials have become scarce as quarrying in the disaster-prone areas have ceased.
Many people living around Mount Agung and construction workers have lost their means of earning a living. “Many building projects are targeted for completion by the end of the year and when we are talking about government projects then the
budget will also be affected. Thee could be contract problems, so this is not easy to deal with’ added Governor Pastika. If the ‘warning’ alert level can be lowered to ‘watch,’ continued Pastika, then the dangerous radius
can be reduced to 6 km from the current 9-12 km. This would mean that the number of evacuees would be cut in half and the local economy could start to run again even if not fully, explained the governor. “This is also the basis of the Coordinating Minister for Maritime to request a more realistic assessment. Do not set the maximum of all the indicators because the result is maximal. Besides, we do not want to harm our people. With sophisticated equipment, it can be detected early,” he explained. Pastika added that the current threat of Mount Agung is being calculated
according to the last major eruption in 1963. At that time there were many casualties because there was no means of communications, transportation or adequate roads. Additionally early detection devices were not as complete as they are today, he added. Continued to page 6
