AUSTIN - Sunday’s U.S. Formula One Grand Prix reversed a trend of declining audiences with its biggest crowd yet, according to organisers who said 269,889 attended over the three days at the Circuit of the Americas. The numbers were boosted by singer Taylor Swift holding her long-awaited first concert of the year on Saturday night after race qualifying, with some 80,000 watching. The race, now in its fifth edition, reported a three-day crowd of 224,011 last year with the pre-
vious record of 265,499 set on its debut in 2012. In 2013 and 2014 the official figures were 250,324 and 237,406 respectively. Bad weather hit revenues significantly last year, with Saturday’s final practice taking place behind closed doors due to
flooded conditions and qualifying postponed to the Sunday. That race turned out to be the title decider, with Britain’s Lewis Hamilton taking his third world championship with Mercedes. State subsidies, which the circuit needs to keep the race on the calendar, are based on a formula for calculating how much economic activity the grand prix generates for Texas and attendances play a big part in that. Migrants wait for new homes as France prepares “Jungle” demolition
CALAIS - Migrants pushed against police lines outside Calais’ “Jungle” camp on Tuesday, waiting for processing as government workers prepared to move in to start clearing the sprawling shanty-town. Hundreds of camp dwellers, many carrying all their possessions in backpacks, waited for busses to take them on to temporary accommodation across France, as the start of a massive operation to demolish the site. Some kept warm around piles of burning rubbish in the camp, a filthy expanse that has become a symbol of Europe’s failed migration policies as member states bicker over who should take in asylum-seekers and economic migrants. There was no repeat of the minor skirmishes with security
forces seen over the weekend and French officials said the early stages of the demolition operation were going peacefully. For many of the migrants fleeing war and poverty in Syria, Afghanistan and other conflict zones, the closure of the “Jungle” marked the end of a dream to reach Britain,
which lies a tantalisingly short sea crossing away. “We know the Jungle is over,” said Aarash, a 21-year-old Afghan as he made his way to the hangar where immigration officials are processing the migrants. “We will see if we can get on a bus today, but we want a good city, like one near Paris. If we can’t go there we will come back to the Jungle.” Several teams of social workers accompanied by translators sent by the government toured the camp early Tuesday handing out leaflets to convince migrants they need to prepare to leave the camp. Officials showed some a map of France with
a “You Are Here” arrow in English pointing to Calais. “Overall the migrants have understood that time is up for the Jungle. They’ve been receptive,” said regional senior social worker Serge Szarzynski. Nonetheless, some migrants said that they would resist efforts to resettle them in France. “France is a good country but just not right for me and my situation. I am going to stay and I will build another jungle!” said a 32-year-old Afghan who gave his name only as Khan. London and Paris have been at odds over the fate of about 1,300
unaccompanied child migrants. The French government last week urged Britain to step up its efforts and resettle child migrants. On Monday, British Interior Minister Amber Rudd said Britain would take in roughly half of the camp’s children who are alone. Continued to page 6

In 2017, foreign manpower in Badung supervised by central govt
MANGUPURA - With the enforcement of the new regional organization (OPD), the supervisory structure of foreign manpower will be drawn to central government in 2017 and will be seconded to the Bali Province. The Head of the Bali Social and Manpower Affairs, I.B. Oka Dirga, stated to have been making maximum efforts to control foreign labor.

“As evidence, our levies increase every year. We have maximally attempted to oversee foreign manpower in the company or individual foreign workers, not illegal foreigners,” said I.B. Oka Dirga, Monday (Oct. 24). According to him, until October 2016 approximately 412 foreign workers came to the office for registration. The foreign manpower is subject to a levy and supervision made by the government of Badung. Based on data of the Badung Social and Manpower Affairs, the number of foreign workers each year showed an increase. In 2014, they amounted to 281 people, in 2015 amounted to 487 people, and up to October 2016 amounted to 412 people in Badung. “Until this year, the levies and supervision are still handled by the Badung Social and Manpower Affairs,” he said. Nevertheless, he shall perform his tasks in accordance with the applicable rules based on Regent Regulation No.20/2013 concerning levies on the license renewal for employment of foreign manpower. However, before employing foreign manpower the companies must make coordination. After being approved and reported to the Ministry of Manpower, the employment of foreign manpower plan (RPTKA) will be issued. After that, they could be employed in the companies in need. In the meantime, if the companies are operating in different districts/cities, such as in Badung and other districts, the companies will extend the employment permit of foreign manpower that hereinafter is called the extension of employment permit of foreign manpower (IMTA) in the province because the manpower works in cross-districts. “If they are only working in the Badung district, they will extend the IMTA at the Badung Social and Manpower Affairs. The permit is valid for five years and should be extended every year. After over five years they also have to extend in the Ministry of Manpower or in central government. That’s the mechanism,” he explained. He mentioned that foreign manpower working in Badung district is subject to a levy of USD 1,200 paid once a year. (kmb27)

Mirai malware simplifies internet attacks like last week’s
NEW YORK — A massive internet attack that paralyzed Twitter, Netflix and other services is being blamed on a specific kind of malware designed to harness the power of ordinary consumer devices. The bad news: Using it isn’t particularly hard and doesn’t require much money. The malware, known as Mirai, was recently posted online for others to adapt for their own attacks. Researchers say Mirai exploited security vulnerabilities in thousands of internet-connected devices such as web cameras, then used those devices to attack a major internet firm, resulting in widespread outages. Researchers say Mirai has been used before, but not on the scale of Friday’s attacks. Here’s a look at Mirai and what makes it so destructive. WHAT HAPPENED?
Dyn Inc., an internet company in Manchester, New Hampshire, said its servers were hit by a distributed denial-of-service attack. These types of attacks work by overwhelming targeted computers with junk traffic, so legitimate traffic can’t get through. Jason Read, founder of the internet performance monitoring firm CloudHarmony, said his company tracked a half-hour-long disruption early Friday affecting access to many popular sites from the East Coast. A second attack later
in the day spread disruption to the West Coast as well as some users in Europe. WHAT MADE THIS ATTACK SO NASTY?
While distributed denial-ofservice attacks have been around for years, hackers have many more devices they can use to pull off their attacks, thanks to the proliferation of internet-connected cameras, thermostats, lights and more. And Mirai makes it easy for a would-be attacker to scan the internet for devices to take over and turn into “botnets” for launching coordinated attacks, Chris Carlson of the cybersecurity firm Qualys said. While botnets have been used as weapons for nearly a decade, they have typically been employed by organized crime groups that targeted websites involved in less-than-savory businesses such as pornography or gambling. Those sites pay extortion money to make the problem go away quietly, Carlson said. “But when you bring it to Dyn, and a lot of the internet gets shut down, people take notice,” Carlson said.
WHAT KINDS OF DEVICES WERE AFFECTED?
Researchers at the cybersecurity firm Flashpoint say very few devices in the U.S. seem to be involved. Most of the junk traffic heaped on Dyn came from internet-connected cameras and video-recording devices that had components made by an obscure Chinese company. Those components had little security protection, so devices they went into became easy to exploit. Because the components were put into a variety of devices that were then packaged and rebranded, it’s hard to tell exactly where they ended up. But Flashpoint researchers Allison Nixon and Zach Wikholm say their research shows that the bulk of them ended up in Vietnam, Brazil, Turkey, Taiwan and China. WHO’S BEHIND IT?
That remains unclear. Nixon and Wikholm say it’s unlikely that this is a state-sponsored attack. Because the blueprints, or source code, for Mirai were public, an attack like this wouldn’t need a government’s resources. Hacker groups have claimed responsibility through Twitter, but those claims haven’t been verified and the pair says it’s likely that they’re all lying. “These guys are amateurs and they managed to get this far. That’s kind of scary,” Nixon said. (ap)

Arrack merchants raided back
Police seize hundreds of liters of arrack
GIANYAR - To minimize crime rate, the ranks of Gianyar Police continuously highlight the circulation of alcoholic drink belonging to arrack. Within the past week, police already raided four taverns. From the operations, police confiscated about 133.5 liters of arrack.
Chief of the Gianyar Police Narcotics Unit, I Gusti Putu Dharma Natha, revealed on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21) that more than a hundred of liters of alcoholic drink were already secured at the Gianyar Police station. He described the operations targeting the circulation of alcoholic drink is carried out to suppress the circulation of arrack in the jurisdiction of the Gianyar Police known as one of the causes of disturbance to social order. “We conduct this operation in an effort to suppress and prevent the acts of violence, fights, sexual abuse or other crimes,” he explained with permission from the Chief of Gianyar Police, Waluya. He said the operation was conducted on Saturday night (Oct. 22). At first, police targeted the owner of tavern, I Wayan KS, 53. From this location, the officers secured 57 liters of arrack, put in gallons of mineral
water. Further, police rummage through the tavern owned by I Wayan KN at Banda hamlet, Saba, Blahbatuh, with evidence of 40 liters of arrack. The operation was continued to target the tavern owned by I Nyoman SD, 41, at Kawan hamlet, Mas, Ubud, and confiscated six liters of arrack. Lastly, the officers targeted the tavern owned by A.A PW where police seized 15 liters of arrack put in jerry cans. “Overall the evidence of arrack having been secured reached hundreds of liters. We have processed four merchants pursuant to legal action by using Article 27 (1) of the Gianyar Regional Bylaw No.13/2012 about trade business license of alcoholic drink (SIUP-MB) and alcoholic beverage point of sale (ITPMB). The charges are imprisonment for six months or a maximum fine of IDR 50 million,” he explained. Some of these four merchants have been repeatedly arrested by the officers. They complained because police operation was considered unfair and seemed discriminative. In addition to arrack, the merchants of palm wine are also rampant in Gianyar. Moreover, the arrack increasingly lacks of customers due to influence of some inciIBP/kmb dents regarding improper mixture of arrack. Within the past week, police already raided four taverns. Made Sudarmaja, a parasitologist from the Medical Faculty of Udayana University in his presentation at the Asia Pacific Society for Medical Mycology Congress in conjunction with national symposium on tropical skin infection entitled ‘Medical Mycology in Asia Pacific: Towards on Health’ said that tapeworms can cause cysticercosis, Sunday (Oct. 23). Data of the WHO say that 50,000 people died from the cysticercosis disease. The case of this disease is still found in Bali and Papua. In Bali, this case continues to increase because in the past the matter of tapeworm infection was not considered a
serious problem and not complained but now since people want to have a good performance and smooth skin, this case is complained. In Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem, the tapeworm case is the highest because people rarely have toilet while they defecate outside. Then, pigs are let roam around while they are the vector of tapeworm causing cysticercosis disease. Tapeworm eggs ingested will hatch in the duodenum resulting in hexacant embryo. This can penetrate the duodenal wall and come into blood circulation. Symptom of this disease shows no complaint. If any pain suffered by patients, it is only a mild pain, so that it is not considered serious. Transmission of this disease can be through traveling, refugees and migration. Cysticercosis can cause vision disorder, severe headaches, seizures, epilepsy and hydrocephalus. (may)

Price of garden balsam slumps, farmers grumble
SEMARAPURA - Garden balsam growers in Klungkung region began to complain recently. It happens because the price of garden balsam began to freefall or turned cheap. Actually, the price of flower commonly used as ritual paraphernalia was expensive reaching IDR 17,000 to IDR 18,000 per kilogram two weeks ago ahead of last full moon. However, the current price is only IDR 3,000 per kilogram. A flower grower from Selisihan village, Klungkung, Ketut Cemeng, when met in the field on Monday (Oct. 24) said that the price of
garden balsam has begun to drop since a week ago. He himself did not know exactly why the price of garden balsam slumps. He sus-
pected it has happened since there is no ritual day. “Perhaps, since there is no ritual day, the price drops to IDR 3,000 per kilogram,” said Cemeng. Ketut Cemeng also admitted that price of garden balsam formerly increased. The increase occurred before the last full moon. At that time, the price could reach IDR 18,000 per kilogram. However, with the present condition, not a
few farmers resigned. Unless they pick, the flowers will die and perish quickly. Besides, it has entered rainy season. “For each harvest, I get a total of 80 kilograms cultivated on 2,000 square meters of land. However, it must be further divided by three,” he said. WARSAW - Hundreds of women marched again in Polish cities on Monday to oppose proposals for tight restrictions on abortion after earlier protests effectively scuttled a near-total ban on terminating pregnancies. They reacted to comments by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the conservative ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, that even severely deformed foetuses should not be aborted so they could be baptised and properly buried. Jokowi leaves for Thailand to pay final tribute to King
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and First Lady Iriana left for Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday, to pay their last tribute to the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The presidential airplane, Indonesia-1, departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, East Jakarta, at 9:30am local time. Upon their arrival in Bangkok, the Head of State and his entourage are scheduled to proceed to the Grand Palace, where the remains of King Bhumibol were resting for mourners to pay their last respect. The president is to lay a wreath. From the Grand Palace, Jokowi will go to Indonesias embassy in Bangkok. In the afternoon, the president and the first lady will return to Jakarta.

JAKARTA - The commander of the Indonesian military (TNI), General Gatot Nurmantyo, stated here on Monday that the TNI rank and file would back up the police in ensuring security for successful conduct of regional elections in 2017. “This is my commitment. From Sabang to Merauke, I have ordered all regional military commanders to remain on standby. Do not hesitate to deploy available forces,” he said at a press conference at the presidential office.
He termed the simultaneous regional elections to be held in February 2017 as a festival of democracy and assured that he would prepare the TNI rank and file to lend all support. “I reaffirm that the TNI would make all arrangements to back up the police in case anyone seeks to disrupt national security and stability,” he stressed. National Police (Polri) chief, General Tito Karnavian, pointed out the police, along with TNI and other community elements, would
collectively make this festival of democracy in the form of simultaneous regional elections 2017 a success. “(With) Polri and TNI as the core forces, supported by other stakeholders, we hope to work together to ensure national security and stability,” he reiterated. He noted that Polri and TNI, in particular, have already held coordination meetings to discuss measures in view of the upcoming elections.
“We have agreed with the TNI commander that all rank and file of Polri and TNI from central to provincial, district, sub-district and village levels as well as from the Minister of Home Affairs down to village heads should jointly maintain national security and stability,” he underlined. General Tito Karnavian commented that Polri would remain neutral in the entire process. “In case, any laws are broken or election rules are violated, these will be dealt with as per the law and
any unconstitutional or anarchic action must be avoided. We must jointly maintain security and stability,” he reminded. Simultaneous regional head elections will be held in 101 regions, including Jakarta, on Feb 15, 2017. AUSTIN - Formula One championship leader Nico Rosberg is refusing to be rattled by reliability concerns as he prepares for his first ‘match point’ of the season in Mexico this weekend. “That’s not within my control so I completely block that out,” the Mercedes driver told reporters after finishing second to team mate Lewis Hamilton in Sunday’s U.S. Grand Prix. Rosberg leaves Austin 26 points clear of triple world champion Hamilton, meaning that the last three races in Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi all loom as potential title deciders. A victory in Mexico City on Sunday, coupled with Hamilton failing to score, would leave the German enjoying an unassailable lead of 51 points.
“Of course I’m aware of that, it’s an obvious calculation which everybody is telling me and it’s great...but for me the approach is keep it simple,” said Rosberg. “So just look for the race win and concentrate on what’s at hand for the weekend.” While Rosberg, who won the last three races of 2015 including Mexico, has enjoyed a remarkably trouble-free campaign, Hamilton has been plagued by reliability issues. The Briton said on Sunday that he had been on tenterhooks every lap, haunted by the possibility of another engine failure like the one that robbed him of 25 points in Malaysia. “In the cockpit all I could think about was the car making it to the end,” said the Briton. “Every single lap I was thinking something
might happen.” Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff saw “very stressful” weeks ahead with the team praying that the drivers could fight for the title without mechanical problems playing a part. “The scare is there,” he told Reuters. “After what happened in Malaysia...there is a bit of trauma that stays within you. We don’t want to interfere in their fight.” Wolff said Mercedes had decided against introducing a further engine upgrade and believed the battle would go all the way to Abu Dhabi. At odds over Brexit, UK nations hold “frustrating” talks on common stance

Jokowi leaves for Thailand to pay final tribute to King
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and First Lady Iriana left for Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday, to pay their last tribute to the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The presidential airplane, Indonesia-1, departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, East Jakarta, at 9:30am local time. Upon their arrival in Bangkok, the Head of State and his entourage are scheduled to proceed to the Grand Palace, where the remains of King Bhumibol were resting for mourners to pay their last respect. The president is to lay a wreath. From the Grand Palace, Jokowi will go to Indonesias embassy in Bangkok. In the afternoon, the president and the first lady will return to Jakarta.

From Sabang to Merauke, I have ordered all regional military commanders to remain on standby. Do not hesitate to deploy available forces,” he said at a press conference at the presidential office.
He termed the simultaneous regional elections to be held in February 2017 as a festival of democracy and assured that he would prepare the TNI rank and file to lend all support. “I reaffirm that the TNI would make all arrangements to back up the police in case anyone seeks to disrupt national security and stability,” he stressed. National Police (Polri) chief, General Tito Karnavian, pointed out the police, along with TNI and other community elements, would

WARSAW - Hundreds of women marched again in Polish cities on Monday to oppose proposals for tight restrictions on abortion after earlier protests effectively scuttled a near-total ban on terminating pregnancies. They reacted to comments by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the conservative ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, that even severely deformed foetuses should not be aborted so they could be baptised and properly buried. Television reports showed hundreds of women dressed in black protesting on the streets of major Polish cities including Katowice, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Warsaw and Bialystok. The renewed protest was organised by a group called The Nationwide Women’s Strike and was aimed at the PiS government and

Mirai malware simplifies internet attacks like last week’s
NEW YORK — A massive internet attack that paralyzed Twitter, Netflix and other services is being blamed on a specific kind of malware designed to harness the power of ordinary consumer devices. The bad news: Using it isn’t particularly hard and doesn’t require much money. The malware, known as Mirai, was recently posted online for others to adapt for their own attacks. Researchers say Mirai exploited security vulnerabilities in thousands of internet-connected devices such as web cameras, then used those devices to attack a major internet firm, resulting in widespread outages. Researchers say Mirai has been used before, but not on the scale of Friday’s attacks. Here’s a look at Mirai and what makes it so destructive. WHAT HAPPENED?
Dyn Inc., an internet company in Manchester, New Hampshire, said its servers were hit by a distributed denial-of-service attack. These types of attacks work by overwhelming targeted computers with junk traffic, so legitimate traffic can’t get through. Jason Read, founder of the internet performance monitoring firm CloudHarmony, said his company tracked a half-hour-long disruption early Friday affecting access to many popular sites from the East Coast. A second attack later
in the day spread disruption to the West Coast as well as some users in Europe. WHAT MADE THIS ATTACK SO NASTY?
While distributed denial-ofservice attacks have been around for years, hackers have many more devices they can use to pull off their attacks, thanks to the proliferation of internet-connected cameras, thermostats, lights and more. And Mirai makes it easy for a would-be attacker to scan the internet for devices to take over and turn into “botnets” for launching coordinated attacks, Chris Carlson of the cybersecurity firm Qualys said. While botnets have been used as weapons for nearly a decade, they have typically been employed by organized crime groups that targeted websites involved in less-than-savory businesses such as pornography or gambling. Those sites pay extortion money to make the problem go away quietly, Carlson said. “But when you bring it to Dyn, and a lot of the internet gets shut down, people take notice,” Carlson said.
WHAT KINDS OF DEVICES WERE AFFECTED?
Researchers at the cybersecurity firm Flashpoint say very few devices in the U.S. seem to be involved. Most of the junk traffic heaped on Dyn came from internet-connected cameras and video-recording devices that had components made by an obscure Chinese company. Those components had little security protection, so devices they went into became easy to exploit. Because the components were put into a variety of devices that were then packaged and rebranded, it’s hard to tell exactly where they ended up. But Flashpoint researchers Allison Nixon and Zach Wikholm say their research shows that the bulk of them ended up in Vietnam, Brazil, Turkey, Taiwan and China. WHO’S BEHIND IT?
That remains unclear. Nixon and Wikholm say it’s unlikely that this is a state-sponsored attack. Because the blueprints, or source code, for Mirai were public, an attack like this wouldn’t need a government’s resources. Hacker groups have claimed responsibility through Twitter, but those claims haven’t been verified and the pair says it’s likely that they’re all lying. “These guys are amateurs and they managed to get this far. That’s kind of scary,” Nixon said. (ap)

GIANYAR - To minimize crime rate, the ranks of Gianyar Police continuously highlight the circulation of alcoholic drink belonging to arrack. Within the past week, police already raided four taverns. From the operations, police confiscated about 133.5 liters of arrack.
Chief of the Gianyar Police Narcotics Unit, I Gusti Putu Dharma Natha, revealed on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21) that more than a hundred of liters of alcoholic drink were already secured at the Gianyar Police station. He described the operations targeting the circulation of alcoholic drink is carried out to suppress the circulation of arrack in the jurisdiction of the Gianyar Police known as one of the causes of disturbance to social order. “We conduct this operation in an effort to suppress and prevent the acts of violence, fights, sexual abuse or other crimes,” he explained with permission from the Chief of Gianyar Police, Waluya. He said the operation was conducted on Saturday night (Oct. 22). At first, police targeted the owner of tavern, I Wayan KS, 53. From this location, the officers secured 57 liters of arrack, put in gallons of mineral
water. Further, police rummage through the tavern owned by I Wayan KN at Banda hamlet, Saba, Blahbatuh, with evidence of 40 liters of arrack. The operation was continued to target the tavern owned by I Nyoman SD, 41, at Kawan hamlet, Mas, Ubud, and confiscated six liters of arrack. They complained because police operation was considered unfair and seemed discriminative. In addition to arrack, the merchants of palm wine are also rampant in Gianyar. DENPASAR - There are several regions in Indonesia becoming the endemic to tapeworm (Taenia solium), namely Bali, Papua, Samosir (North Sumatera) and Sulawesi. The highest number of tapeworm is found in Bali in particular the region of Kubu, Karangasem. Made Sudarmaja, a parasitologist from the Medical Faculty of Udayana University in his presentation at the Asia Pacific Society for Medical Mycology Congress in conjunction with national symposium on tropical skin infection entitled ‘Medical Mycology in Asia Pacific: Towards on Health’ said that tapeworms can cause cysticercosis, Sunday (Oct. 23). Data of the WHO say that 50,000 people died from the cysticercosis disease. The case of this disease is still found in Bali and Papua. In Bali, this case continues to increase because in the past the matter of tapeworm infection was not considered a
serious problem and not complained but now since people want to have a good performance and smooth skin, this case is complained. In Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem, the tapeworm case is the highest because people rarely have toilet while they defecate outside. Then, pigs are let roam around while they are the vector of tapeworm causing cysticercosis disease. Tapeworm eggs ingested will hatch in the duodenum resulting in hexacant embryo. This can penetrate the duodenal wall and come into blood circulation. Symptom of this disease shows no complaint. If any pain suffered by patients, it is only a mild pain, so that it is not considered serious. Transmission of this disease can be through traveling, refugees and migration. Cysticercosis can cause vision disorder, severe headaches, seizures, epilepsy and hydrocephalus. (may)

MANGUPURA - With the enforcement of the new regional organization (OPD), the supervisory structure of foreign manpower will be drawn to central government in 2017 and will be seconded to the Bali Province. The Head of the Bali Social and Manpower Affairs, I.B. Oka Dirga, stated to have been making maximum efforts to control foreign labor.

“As evidence, our levies increase every year. We have maximally attempted to oversee foreign manpower in the company or individual foreign workers, not illegal foreigners,” said I.B. Oka Dirga, Monday (Oct. 24). According to him, until October 2016 approximately 412 foreign workers came to the office for registration. The foreign manpower is subject to a levy and supervision made by the government of Badung. Based on data of the Badung Social and Manpower Affairs, the number of foreign workers each year showed an increase. In 2014, they amounted to 281 people, in 2015 amounted to 487 people, and up to October 2016 amounted to 412 people in Badung. “Until this year, the levies and supervision are still handled by the Badung Social and Manpower Affairs,” he said. Nevertheless, he shall perform his tasks in accordance with the applicable rules based on Regent Regulation No.20/2013 concerning levies on the license renewal for employment of foreign manpower. However, before employing foreign manpower the companies must make coordination. After being approved and reported to the Ministry of Manpower, the employment of foreign manpower plan (RPTKA) will be issued. After that, they could be employed in the companies in need. In the meantime, if the companies are operating in different districts/cities, such as in Badung and other districts, the companies will extend the employment permit of foreign manpower that hereinafter is called the extension of employment permit of foreign manpower (IMTA) in the province because the manpower works in cross-districts. “If they are only working in the Badung district, they will extend the IMTA at the Badung Social and Manpower Affairs. The permit is valid for five years and should be extended every year. After over five years they also have to extend in the Ministry of Manpower or in central government. That’s the mechanism,” he explained. He mentioned that foreign manpower working in Badung district is subject to a levy of USD 1,200 paid once a year. (kmb27)

AUSTIN - Sunday’s U.S. Formula One Grand Prix reversed a trend of declining audiences with its biggest crowd yet, according to organisers who said 269,889 attended over the three days at the Circuit of the Americas. The numbers were boosted by singer Taylor Swift holding her long-awaited first concert of the year on Saturday night after race qualifying, with some 80,000 watching. The race, now in its fifth edition, reported a three-day crowd of 224,011 last year with the pre-

Migrants wait for new homes as France prepares “Jungle” demolition
CALAIS - Migrants pushed against police lines outside Calais’ “Jungle” camp on Tuesday, waiting for processing as government workers prepared to move in to start clearing the sprawling shanty-town. Hundreds of camp dwellers, many carrying all their possessions in backpacks, waited for busses to take them on to temporary accommodation across France, as the start of a massive operation to demolish the site. Some kept warm around piles of burning rubbish in the camp, a filthy expanse that has become a symbol of Europe’s failed migration policies as member states bicker over who should take in asylum-seekers and economic migrants. There was no repeat of the minor skirmishes with security
forces seen over the weekend and French officials said the early stages of the demolition operation were going peacefully. For many of the migrants fleeing war and poverty in Syria, Afghanistan and other conflict zones, the closure of the “Jungle” marked the end of a dream to reach Britain,
which lies a tantalisingly short sea crossing away. “We know the Jungle is over,” said Aarash, a 21-year-old Afghan as he made his way to the hangar where immigration officials are processing the migrants. “We will see if we can get on a bus today, but we want a good city, like one near Paris. If we can’t go there we will come back to the Jungle.” Several teams of social workers accompanied by translators sent by the government toured the camp early Tuesday handing out leaflets to convince migrants they need to prepare to leave the camp. Officials showed some a map of France with
a “You Are Here” arrow in English pointing to Calais. “Overall the migrants have understood that time is up for the Jungle. They’ve been receptive,” said regional senior social worker Serge Szarzynski. Nonetheless, some migrants said that they would resist efforts to resettle them in France. “France is a good country but just not right for me and my situation. I am going to stay and I will build another jungle!” said a 32-year-old Afghan who gave his name only as Khan. London and Paris have been at odds over the fate of about 1,300
unaccompanied child migrants. The French government last week urged Britain to step up its efforts and resettle child migrants. On Monday, British Interior Minister Amber Rudd said Britain would take in roughly half of the camp’s children who are alone. Continued to page 6
