Cumberbatch and ‘Sherlock’ to return for 4th season
LONDON — There will be more mysteries to solve for the sleuth of Baker Street.
The BBC confirmed Saturday that filming on a fourth series of the hit detective drama “Sherlock” will start in next spring. The modern-day update of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his stalwart companion, Dr. Watson. Since “Sherlock” first aired in 2010, Cumberbatch has become a global star, Academy Award-nominated for “The Imitation Game.” Freeman has starred in “The Hobbit” movie saga and in TV’s “Fargo.” The BBC in Britain and PBS’ “Masterpiece” in the United States have also announced they will broadcast a 90-minute “Sherlock” special episode on Jan. 1. Titled “The Abominable Bride,” it sends the characters back to the stories’ original late 19thcentury setting. (ap)

Tarantino leads New York protest against police NEW YORK - Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino was among hundreds of people from across the United States who marched in New York on Saturday against perceived police brutality. Campaigners say that police unfairly profile black and Latino men, and criticize what they see as the militarization of law enforcement forces in the US. “This is not being dealt with in anyway at all. That’s why we are out here. If it was being dealt with, then these murdering cops would be in jail or at least be facing charges,” said Tarantino, whose hit films include “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction.” Tarantino had similarly joined activists in New York’s Times Square on Thursday to launch a fresh push -- dubbed #RiseUpOctober -- demanding an end to police killings. People who said they had lost family members at the hands of police are participating in the movement for change. “This is a big progress. This is just amazing to me and I hope we will organize more rallies in honor of all victims of police brutality,” Chicago-based Precious Edwards, 18, told AFP. Edwards is the sister of Dakota Bright, 15, shot dead by Chicago police in November 2012. “I hope that everyone, not only black and brown people, but purple or blue people, everybody stands up,” she added. Adele releases ‘Hello’, first single from new album
LONDON - British singer Adele on Friday released a melancholic ballad from her hotly-anticipated new album due out on November 20, breaking a four-year wait for millions of fans after her best-selling “21”. “Hello” is about a love story gone wrong and features the same powerful voice and emotion of her international blockbuster “Someone Like You”. “I’m sorry for breaking your heart/ But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore,” the 27-yearold sings in the black-and-white video, filmed in the Quebec countryside around Montreal. The album “25” is being released on November 20. The singer told fans in a letter posted on her social media accounts this week that she chose the title because her 25th birthday marked a turning point. “My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record,” she
said. “I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did.” The new release will be Adele’s third album and follow a pattern as her previous works were entitled “19” and “21,” also after her ages. “21” -- which featured “Someone Like You” and other hits including “Rolling in the Deep” -- won the Grammy award for Album of the Year and spent two consecutive years as the top-selling album in the United States. In Britain, “21” is comfortably the best-selling album of the 21st century so far. After the massive success, Adele said that she wanted a break to give some time to herself. THE DEVELOPMENT of Bali, has tended to ignore local wisdom and what it has to say about sustaining culture and people. It has become quite challenging to keep the negative impacts of development less than the positive impacts. Threats to the fundamental elements of Balinese culture are increasing. Balinese people must therefor be acutely aware of maintaining their heritage and the potential that it represents. The inclusion of Besakih as a national tourism strategic area (KSPN) is evidence of the most severe kind of damage to the spiritual locomotive of Balinese people. A former officials of Bank Indonesia, Made Sadguna, who is now serving as a Commissioner of the Prama Swadaya Adidaya, along with DBA and Dr. Supartha Djelantik, said that there are currently two major issues that are polarizing the Balinese community. The first is the issue of the Benoa Bay Reclamation plan, the second is the inclusion of Besakih in the KSPN.

DENPASAR - The Forum of Balinese People Rejecting Reclamation (ForBALI) protested on the streets of Renon, Denpasar, on Saturday (Oct. 24). A mass of thousands moved from the East Parking Lot to the parliamentary buildings and then to the governor’s office. ForBALI is still demanding the revocation of Presidential Decree No.51/2014 and a cancellation of the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. “The Benoa Bay reclamation plan has received strong opposition from the people of both NTB -from where sand is being taken for the backfilling of the bay, and also by people in Bali where the backfilling is planned,” said coordinator of
the Political Division of ForBALI, Suriadi Darmoko. Suriadi, that in regards to the massive rejection of the project, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry should stop the ongoing environmental impact assessment
(Amdal) process for the Benoa Bay project, a process that the community at large has also opposed for its lack of transparency. So far, the public has been unable to access the terms of reference or even the pre-environmental impact analysis. As a result, the public is unable to fully participate in the environmental impact analysis process for the reclamation plan. “Substantially, the project is being rejected on the grounds of both the backfilling and dredging required. In terms of process, the
planned project is not taking place transparently. Suddenly, there was a consultation meeting, then suddenly we are invited to a public consultation that again suddenly there is a technical meeting called. If we look at the process of the consultations, we have also only been invited one day before the consultation. Without materials or documentation we are invited to a discussion -ill-equipped to debate anything,” he said. Suriadi added that the reclamation plan would result in landscape
changes and should therefore be based on the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). However, so far Bali has no SEA procedure. Suryawan said that the results of a survey conducted by academics a few years ago, indicated that number one reason that visitors come to Bali is to enjoy cultural and natural attractions. It is therefore very important that Bali continues to promote cultural tourism as this is the bedrock of tourism in Bali. “We will not emulate other countries that develop artificial
or mass tourism that brings in tens of millions of tourists. That would be ridiculous, because fist of all we would lose that competition and second of all it would use far too many of our precious resources. Our goal is not to attract more tourists but to improve the quality of the tourists who visit Bali. Quality here means that travelers are few in number, stay for longer and spend more. It means that

The government need not think about improving the quantity of tourists, but should be focused on making improvements to the quality of tourism, because Bali has a unique culture that should be allowed to flourish because it is this very culture that draws tourists to the island. A member of the Love Bali Forum, Nyoman Suma Artha,
said that Bali is very small and as such its carrying capacity is quite limited. This spatial limitation can be seen when we compare remaining green open spaces to land that has been built on - the ration is no longer ideal. Denpasar as an urban area has very limited availability of open green space. Conditions will only worsen if Benoa Bay is made into a tourist area, where will there be any open spaces left? Besides, the secondary effects of such a projects are also considerable. For example, some estimate say that the population of the area would increase by some 600,000 people. “This will overload Bali, it doesn’t make sense,” said Suryaman worriedly. (ara)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BARCELONA — Work on Barcelona’s breathtaking La Sagrada Familia Basilica, designed by visionary architect Antoni Gaudi, has entered its final phase of raising six immense towers that will make it Europe’s tallest religious building, surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster.

Presenting the project Thursday, chief architect Jordi Fauli said the central “Tower of Jesus Christ,” the tallest of the six, will make the architectural marvel that draws millions of visitors each year one for the record books when it is finished in a little over a decade. “The central tower of 172.5 meters (566 feet) will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because the tallest tower in Europe is Ulm, at 162 meters (531.5 feet),” Fauli said. St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome will still have the tallest interior. The Sagrada Familia, an emblematic fixture of the Barcelona skyline and a major tourist site, had its first stone laid in 1882. It is 70percent complete and currently tops out at 112 meters (367 feet). Fauli said the plan to have the towers and most of the church’s structure completed in 2026 for the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death is still on schedule. He said there will still be some elements left to finish, such as decorations. “It’s difficult to predict but we can say that it will be completed by 2030, 2032,” he said. The “Tower of Jesus Christ” will be crowned by a cross and tightly surrounded by five other towers, one dedicated to Mary and four slightly shorter ones for the four evangelists. Fauli unveiled the next phase of the construction in a newly finished chamber that formed a small amphitheater, perched 60 meters (196 feet) above the floor of the church from where hundreds of visitors gazed at the church’s stained glass windows and arching ceilings. The tower will rise directly above the chamber, which is designed to support the weight of the towers and channel sunlight into the building. A mere 15 years ago, there was no roof on the inner part of the church as it stood between the two beautiful facades with eight bell towers that leave spectators overcome with awe, one side looking like a sand castle and the other a work of art inspired by cubist painting. Gaudi won the patronage of some of Barcelona’s wealthiest industrialist and upper-crust families, who commissioned him to build gorgeous homes and other daring buildings and parks that have helped make Barcelona a leading tourist destination. A fervent Catholic, Gaudi largely dedicated his life to the project, incorporating both Christian symbolism and organic forms into a unique aesthetic. Gaudi, who died in 1926 after being struck by a trolley, never expected the cathedral to be completed in his lifetime. Only one facade was finished when he died. Fauli took over as the chief architect in 2012. He inherited the charge of carrying on the task of making Gaudi’s drawings, some of which were only rough sketches, into the massive monument that is now reaching its conclusion. The monument received more than 3.2 million visits in 2014, making it one of the biggest tourist sites in Spain. The entrance fees of 15-20 euros ($17-22) finance the construction budget of 25 million euros ($28.38 million) a year. (ap)

GIANYAR - Beaches have always been an appealing place to establish tourist accommodations. Alhough many hotels and restaurants have already started to erode from abrasion, having violated coastal building laws, many investors are nonetheless eager to build on shorelines. For instance, there is a building development going up on Keramas Beach, Blahbatuh. There are already several tourist accommodations right on Keramas beach that where given building licenses before abrasion became a serious problem. One restaurant
on Keramas Beach -alleged to have been operating without a permit was shut down some time ago by the Gianyar Municipal Police. Currently there are workers
building a tourist accommodation rich on Keramas Beach just 20 meters form the shore, where pounding waves are clearly visible. To the West of this building project stand a row of villas overlooking the beach, that appear to have been abandoned before being completed. ber of local residents saw water seeping due to the leaking tap pipe. However, Marjaya confirmed that the water seepage was not the main cause behind the landslides.
He said about two years ago, a similar landslide had occurred on the northern side of the road. Although the avalanche did not disrupt the flow of traffic, the police set up a police line. (ant)

SOFIA/RIGONCE - European leaders traded threats and reprimands on Saturday as thousands more migrants and refugees streamed into the Balkans on the eve of European Union talks aimed at agreeing on urgent action to tackle the crisis. Concern is growing about hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving in Europe, many from war zones in the Middle East, and camping in western Balkan countries in ever colder conditions as winter approaches. More than 680,000 migrants and refugees have crossed to Europe by sea so far this year, fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, according to the International Organization for Migration. Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania said they would close their borders if Germany or other countries shut the door on refugees, warning they would not let the Balkan region become a “buffer zone” for stranded migrants. “The three countries, we are standing ready, if Germany and Austria close their borders, not to allow our countries to become buffer zones. We will be ready to close borders,” Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov told reporters. European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has invited the leaders of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia to Sunday’s mini-summit. The aim of the meeting is to agree “common operational conclusions which could be immediately implemented.” German media have reported that Juncker will present a 16-point plan,

Abrasion got worse said former legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nyoman Oka Antara, after the rampant backfilling or reclamation of beaches in Bali, including the backfill that took place at Ngurah Rai Airport for runway extensions and the backfill of Serangan Beach that was meant to serve the development of the “Bali Turtle Island Development,” said former legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nyoman Oka Antara. Karangasem has the second longest stretch of beach in Bali after Buleleng and approximately 30 percent of Karangasems’s 87km of beach are damaged by abrasion. Damage can be seen at Labuhan Beach, near the Pertamina Depot in Manggis, Buitan Beach, Sengkidu to Candidasa, Jasri Beach, Ujung, Seraya, Bunutan to Amed at Purwakerti village, Tulamben, and almost all the beaches in the subdistrict of Kubu. Severe abrasion has eroded the cemetery of Tukad Besi village during the ferocious wave season a few months ago. A number of graves collapsed and the bones became scattered. Families of the deceased finally amassed the bones that were scattered by the abrasion waves and reburied them further down the beach. In addition to graves, a number of temples such as the Pura Ratu Ayu as well as the Pura Dadia Gajahpara at Tianyar Barat also continue to be eroded by abrasion. Moreover, about five meters of the compound wall of the Gajahpara clan temple on the seaside of Tamansari, Tianyar Barat, also collapsed few months ago. At least, four villas or hotels on the beach are also eroded. Many lands of local residents as well as coconut trees on Jasri and Kubu Beach have disappeared into the sea. So far, the handling of the coastal erosion remains minimal. The central government, through the Bali-Penida River Agency have only secured the beach with boulders along some 200 meters on Candidasa Beach, 100 meters on Jasri Beach, about 50 meters on Ujung Beach and 100 meters on Pilihan Beach, Tianyar Timur where the local cemetery is eroded. Acting Regent of Karangasem, Ida Bagus Ngurah Arda, some time ago accompanied by his staff visited the coastal erosion that has been breaking down the compound wall of a temple in Kubu. His staff, Nyoman Sutirtayasa, was asked to take preventitive measures in order that the temple not continue to disintegrate. Sutirtayasa said that his institution will collect data collection data and submit a proposal to the central government through the BaliPenida River Agency, the Ministry of Public Works in Denpasar fro assistance in managing abrasion in the area. The government of Karangasem is unable to do this alone because the budget required for handling coastal erosion is very large. “Abrasion prevention programs have also been assisted by the central government,” he said. Many currently unemployed people have not been equipped with adequate skills, expertise nor trained in productivity. The ability of the government to create job opportunities also remains very limited. The labor development of the labour force by the government and the private sector has not shown adequate results. SEOUL, South Korea — This weekend, scores of Koreans on both sides of the border are holding reunions with family members divided by the Korean War some six decades ago. Most have not seen each other since then — and may never again. This is the second three-day session of reunions organized by the two countries held at the Diamond Mountain resort in North Korea. South Korean Lee Cheon-wu, a 78-year-old retired farmer, was at the first session, held during the middle of the week. Here, in his own words, is what he will remember about what will likely be his last meeting with his 84-yearold sister, North Korean Ri Mun Wu. When the North Korean participants came into the reunion center, I quickly recognized my elder sister because she looks exactly like our late mother. I quickly shouted, “Sister!” and rushed over and embraced her. She asked me “Who are you?” So I said, “It’s me. Cheonwu!” She wept and hugged me. They look so much alike, it really feels like I reunited with my mother, who died 24 years ago. She was 12 and I was 6 when she was sent to North Korea in 1943, before the war, so we
didn’t share many stories about the good old days. We just talked about how we’ve lived in the years since. She had a big misunderstanding about our parents so I tried to resolve that, but it didn’t work. My parents sent her to a relative’s house in Hamhung in North Korea because they couldn’t financially take care of all their children at the time. They planned to get her later, but they couldn’t because the Korean War broke out in 1950. My sister said a relative there told her that our parents had sold her, so the new family forced her to do all the housework like dishwashing and rice-cooking. I repeatedly told her that our parents didn’t sell her and that they tried to get her back when the situation got better but she wouldn’t believe it. I learned she was alive about eight years ago when an ethnic Korean Chinese visited me and said my sister was looking for me. We exchanged letters and photos through this broker, who told me they could bring her to a certain place in China to arrange a meeting with her if I came to China with 2 million won ($1,770). But I didn’t do it because I worried they might be trying to swindle me. This week,
I took the two letters they said my sister wrote and asked her if she’d really written them. She’s now suffering Alzheimer’s disease and she couldn’t remember. But I came to believe they were her letters after talking with her. I brought two suitcases full of medicine, pain killers, medicated patches, cosmetics, nutritional supplements, long underwear, a coat, a parka and pants. When I asked her to put on some of the clothes, I found she was wearing three thin long johns. I told her I’m not wearing any long johns and she was really surprised. She’s 84 so she’s old and thin and more sensitive to cold. Her Alzheimer’s, age and a hearing problem meant that we wouldn’t have been able to reunite if this happened two or three years later. I also gave her $500, and she gave us three bottles of liquor and some cookies. She said she was sorry for not giving me more even though I gave her many presents. “Please, don’t say that,” I said. “I didn’t come here to get presents from you. You probably didn’t come for the presents either.” “You were smart when you were a little boy and you’re still smart,” she said. (ap)

Business deals valued at $19.5 billion, including joint projects between Indonesian state utilities and U.S. firms in the power sector, are due to be announced, according to Indonesian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about planning for the trip. Obama, who lived in Indonesia as a child, visited the country twice during his first term as he sought to put more emphasis on America’s ties with Asia. But like many countries in the neighborhood, Indonesia remains careful to balance its relations between the U.S.
and China, the region’s dominant economy. Indonesia doesn’t count itself among nations contesting for islands in the disputed South China Sea, although it is concerned that China’s expansive maritime claims extend to the waters of Indonesia’s Natuna Islands, where Indonesian officials say they want more U.S. investment. Reflecting the maritime security concerns, the U.S. is expected to provide more support for the sprawling archipelago’s coast guard. The two leaders will also discuss Islamic extremism. Indonesia, the world’s largest majority-Muslim nation, does not contribute to the military effort against Islamic State group, but has been an outspoken critic of the group, which has drawn hundreds of Indonesian recruits to fight in Syria and Iraq.

Despite the areas of common interest between Jakarta and Washington, Indonesian economic protectionism has remained a drag on its relationship. U.S. trade with Indonesia was only about $28 billion last year, less than with Vietnam, a much smaller economy. Foreign direct investment accounts for a smaller percentage of Indonesian GDP than many of its neighbors. Tami Overby, senior vice president for Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that regional competition for foreign investment will grow more fierce when the U.S.-backed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal is ratified and takes effect, likely in a couple of years’ time. Indonesia is not among the 12 participating nations. Citing a 2014 think tank study, Overby said there’s potential to double the current $60 billion in U.S. investment in Indonesia in five years but it needs to take action to improve the business climate by reducing demands for local
content, opening up more sectors to foreign investment and cutting red tape. It also needs to make the legal system more predictable, she said, citing the case of U.S. energy giant Chevron, which operates Indonesia’s largest oil field and is planning Indonesia’s first deep-sea gas field. But China can still overcome economic problems, Li said in a speech at the Central Party School, which trains cadres, according to a notice on the cental government’s website. Gross domestic product (GDP) in the world’s second-largest economy grew at just 6.9 percent in the third quarter, its slowest rate in six years. In March, Li forecast 2015 economic growth would be about 7.0 percent, as the country shifts to a “new normal” driven by domestic consumption instead of exports and government investment. “First, 6.9 percent is about 7 percent, which is in a reasonable range,” Li said, according to a report of the meeting by the People’s Daily, the official Communist Party mouthpiece. “We never said we must defend any target to the death.” China’s most recent GDP figures added to fears over the health of the global economy, and some analysts expressed concern they had been manipulated to understate the gravity of the situation. But Li attempted to strike an optimistic tone about the future. “The joint efforts of the whole country and the great potential of China’s economy, strengthens our confidence in overcoming difficulties,” according to paraphrased remarks posted on the central government’s website. The country’s decades-long boom, fuelled by infrastructure investment, exports and debt, made it a key driver of the global economy. Even though growth has eased in recent years its GDP more than doubled in real terms between 2006 and 2014, according to World Bank figures. I have the police investigation report of the witnesses that revealed their testimony before the investigators. He even misread, misunderstood or obscured the facts. Maldives leader says VP’s arrest over boat blast ‘not easy’
MALE, Maldives — The Maldives’ president appealed for calm throughout the island nation Sunday, after his deputy was arrested on suspicion of treason for allegedly plotting to assassinate him with an explosion on his boat. P r e s i d e n t Ya m e e n A b d u l Gayoom, who escaped the Sept. 28 blast unhurt, told reporters it “was not easy” to see the arrest of Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, a young protege appointed to the office only three months ago. “It was taken for the security of the country,” Gayoom said, but added that he would wait for the case to go to trial before beginning any process to impeach him. The arrest marks the latest in a series of political shakedowns and power struggles in the Maldives that have seized the fragile, young democracy since it held its first elections in 2008, after 30 years of autocracy under Gayoom’s halfbrother. After Adeeb’s arrest on Saturday, a small group of his supporters staged a protest that led to a police crackdown, with 17 people detained. The home minister said Adeeb would be charged with “high treason,” an offense not specified in the penal code but still used in the Maldives for terrorism or offenses against the state by government officials. Gayoom said the investigation suggested Adeeb was connected with two soldiers arrested for tampering with evidence on the boat soon after the blast. He said police had found bomb-making materials
at their homes. Adeeb’s lawyer on Saturday called the allegations against his client untrue. During a hearing in which Adeeb and his lawyers participated by teleconference, the court approved his detention for 15 days of questioning while police conduct raids on the homes and businesses of his family and associates. Gayoom has been dodging controversy since he won the presidency in 2013 after hotly disputed elections against a predecessor who was forced to resign three years earlier amid public protests. Former President Mohamed Nasheed is now serving 13 years behind bars on a conviction delivered in a rushed trial widely criticized as unfair. The 33-year-old Adeeb, who was hugely popular with young Maldivians, was credited with delivering the important youth vote to Gayoom. Some 40 percent of the mostly Muslim country’s 350,000 people are aged from 15 to 34. In July, Adeeb was moved from the Tourism Ministry to become vice president, after lawmakers loyal to Gayoom impeached his predecessor and lowered the minimum presidential age from 35 to 30. The promotion put Adeeb next in line for the presidency, should Gayoom be unable to govern. Adeeb was also given influence and
powers beyond those of his elder colleagues, including heading the country’s economic council and mapping out plans for a special economic zone. Meanwhile, he kept control over tourism — a major industry for an island nation known worldwide for its palmfringed beaches, clear waters and luxury resorts. After the explosion tore through the president’s boat last month, rumors soon began circulating that Adeeb was behind the blast — allegations he emphatically denied. Investigators ruled out mechanical failure as a cause of the blast, and the government said an explosive device had been placed under the seat the president usually occupied. Authorities carried out raids on the homes and businesses of Adeeb’s associates, but have refused to give any details about what may allegedly have been found. Gayoom also sacked his defense minister and the police commissioner after the blast. Adeeb was taken into custody Saturday at the airport immediately upon returning from an official visit to China. Police spokesman Ismail Ali said Adeeb was wanted “on suspicion of involvement in the boat blast.” Three soldiers were also arrested Saturday, including a former member of Adeeb’s security detail and a member of the army’s bomb squad, bringing the total number detained in the boat blast investigation to seven. Why was Presidential Regulation No.51 issued even after there was a clear public polemic regarding the reclamation, even after the investor was hampered in trying to reclaim the bay because it belongs to conservation area? Ten thousand workers to stake rally
BOGOR - Some 10 thousand workers grouped in the National Labor Union (SPN) will stage a rally in front of the Presidential Palace on Tuesday (Oct 27), to reject a draft government regulation on wages, following the issuance of the fourth economic policy package by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). “On Tuesday (Oct 27), some 10 thousand workers who are members of the SPN from 12 provinces, will go the Presidential Palace in Jakarta to express their rejection of the draft government regulation on waging,” Iwan Kusmawan, chairman of the SPN executive board, said on Sunday.
The plan to stage the rally was discussed in a coordinating meeting of the SPN in Bogor, Saturday (Oct. 24). The labor union strongly rejected the draft regulation because the government has issued the policy without discussing the matter with labor unions, he added.
The SPN insisted that labor unions must be involved in deciding the minimal wages for workers through the Wage Council. Besides, the salary increase is decided based on just the inflation rate and the economic growth, without referring to a proper living wage needs, he remarked. “It’s obvious that the policy is against the Law No 13/2003 on manpower,” he noted. In the meantime, Secretary General of the Confederation of Indonesian Labor Unions (KSPI)
Muhammad Rusdi has said the new wage policy which is part of the fourth economic policy package announced recently, will only benefit employers. “The wage policy will only benefit employers and does not accommodate workers’ aspirations. Despite salary hike based on inflation and economic growth, Indonesian workers will remain poor although they are employed,” he said in a press conference on Friday (Oct. 16). It is likely that only Indonesian
workers who have been employed remain poor because they receive low salaries. In fact, in other countries, unemployed people receive allowances so that they can lead a fair life. “For workers and other people, wages are the main artery. The government has sided with the employers ever since the first, second and third economic policy packages were issued. We highly expected the fourth economic policy package to side with the workers,” he said. (ant)
Warships ready for haze evacuation
JAKARTA - Indonesia has put warships on standby to evacuate people affected by acrid haze from forest fires which has killed at least 10 and caused respiratory illnesses in half a million, officials said Saturday. For nearly two months, thousands of fires caused by slashand-burn farming in Indonesia have choked vast expanses of Southeast Asia, forcing schools to close and scores of flights and some international events to be cancelled. The government has decided to send ships to haze-affected provinces to evacuate victims, especially children and women, if necessary, with two warships deployed to Kalimantan on Friday and another car-
rying medical workers and health equipment expected Saturday. Military spokesman Tatang Sulaiman said the warships, which will be standing by in Banjarmasin, the capital of south Kalimantan, could serve as evacuation centers and hospitals for those affected by the haze. Tatang said there was no immediate plan to bring people onboard but that could change if hospitals on land reach capacity or become overwhelmed. “The ships are sent just in case children or pregnant women must be relocated from the local health facilities, it does not mean everyone would be put into the ships,” Tatang said. “So far health facilities on the
ground in Kalimantan are still trying their best, we are just getting ready by deploying warships,” Tatang said. Each warship can carry up to 2000 people and has 344 beds onboard. “For now the ships will be standing by. We will begin evacuation when there is an instruction from the government,” navy spokesman Muhammad Zainuddin told AFP. The government has deployed around 30 aircraft to fight the fires and for cloud seeding with 22,000 troops on the ground to combat the blazes. Indonesian disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the fires had killed 10 people so far, some fighting the
blazes while others died of respiratory illnesses or medical conditions exacerbated by the pollution. “The impact of the forest fires has caused 10 people in Sumatra and Kalimantan to die, directly and indirectly,” Nugroho said. The figure did not include seven hikers killed in a wildfire on Java last week. The agency estimated at least half a million people have suffered from respiratory illness since the fires started in July and 43 million people have been affected in the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Nugroho said the figure was likely just the tip of the iceberg because many people did not go to health facilities for treatment.
More than 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of land has been burned and six provinces severely affected by the haze, according to Indonesia’s forestry ministry. “This is due to human acts because 99 percent of forest fires were started deliberately. This is an extraordinary crime against humanity,” Nugroho said. Other countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Japan have sent assistance to help Indonesia fighting the forest fires. With Malaysia, Singapore and parts of Thailand already affected, the Philippines Friday said the haze had now spread there, disrupting air traffic and prompting warnings for residents to wear face masks. 17 killed when fire breaks out in Manado’s karaoke bar
MANADO — Police say 17 people have been killed in a fire that broke out in a packed karaoke bar on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island. Witnesses told authorities the fire started at around 1 a.m. Sunday on the second floor of the three-story building as hundreds of people filled the club in downtown Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province. Manado city police chief Col. Rio Permana said all twelve of people who died in the Inul Vizta Karaoke club — 7 men and 5 women — were Indonesians. Most of them died as the result of smoke inhalation injuries rather than burns. About 32 others were being hospitalized. He said police are still investigating the cause of fires. It took firefighters several hours to bring the blaze under control. (ap)

MotoGP championship leader Valentino Rossi will start the season finale in Valencia from the back of the grid after the Italian was penalised for clashing with Marc Marquez at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday. Dani Pedrosa claimed victory at Sepang and was followed home by Rossi’s championship rival and Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo, who has now closed the gap to seven points ahead of the decider in Spain in two weeks’ time. Rossi finished third but had an anxious wait to see if he would keep the points after making contact with Marquez and sending the Spaniard spinning into the gravel. After an inquiry, Race Direction opted against docking the seventime premier class champion any points but imposed a “three point penalty” that will see him start at the back of the field in Valencia. The Yamaha team have appealed the decision. Prior to the race, Rossi had claimed former champion Marquez wanted fellow Spaniard Lorenzo to win the championship instead of him and the simmering relationship between the pair boiled over at the Sepang International Circuit. The duo darted into corners trying to get the upper hand, swapping places and touching wheels a number of times until Rossi slowed at Turn 14, forced Marquez wide and then flicked out a knee, which resulted in his rival’s Honda sliding into the gravel. Rossi said it was a racing incident and regretted his rival had crashed out. “You know unfortunately I lose a lot of time with Marc and in Turn 14 I tried to go wide to get a better line to make him slow because he just rides to cause me
some problems,” MotoGP’s official site quoted Rossi as saying. “Unfortunately he came to me and I think he crashed in that moment. It’s a shame because I think that in a normal race we can stay and fight with Jorge and we lost some more points. “In Valencia, will be more difficult,” he added, looking ahead to the season-ending race on Nov. 8. By avoiding disqualification, Rossi remains on 312 points ahead of the Valencia Grand Prix, seven ahead of Lorenzo with 25 available for victory in Spain. SINGAPORE — Top-seeded Simona Halep defeated U.S. Open champion Flavia Pennetta 6-0, 6-3 to win the opening match of the WTA Finals on Sunday. Halep, last year’s finalist in Singapore, raced to a 6-0 1-0 lead before Pennetta won a game. “I feel that I can play my best tennis here,” Halep said. “I can say that I didn’t play my best today, but I played good tennis. I played solid. I was dominating the match.” The Romanian saved both break points she faced in the second
set and broke Pennetta’s serve four times. Pennetta, who only qualified for the WTA Finals last week, had beaten Halep the last time they played in the U.S. Open semifinals. “I didn’t play the right game against her at the U.S. Open,” Halep said. “Here I was well-prepared and I knew how to play against her.” On Sunday, Pennetta was a step slower and Halep was on form from the minute she walked on court. “She play I think really consistent,” said Pennetta, making her WTA Finals debut. “She was play-

BARCELONA, Spain — Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 12th goal in as many games and Keylor Navas made several saves to help Real Madrid earn a deceptively tough 3-1 win at second-place Celta Vigo on Saturday and provisionally increase its Spanish league lead. Ronaldo and Danilo gave Madrid a two-goal lead at Balaidos Stadium by the 23rd minute, but Madrid needed Navas to protect the advantage before Celta lost Gustavo Cabral to a second yellow card in the 57th. Despite playing a man down, Manuel “Nolito” Agudo got a deserved goal for the hosts in the 85th and Celta almost leveled before Marcelo scored Madrid’s last goal just before the final whistle. Celta’s first loss of the season left Madrid as the only undefeated team in the 20-team league. Madrid rose three points clear of both the Galician club and defending champion Barcelona, which hosts Eibar on Sunday. Madrid coach Rafa Benitez attributed his team’s shaky showing to tired legs from Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. “It’s positive for the group that they know that we can win points while struggling,” Benitez said. Elsewhere, Kevin Gameiro scored a hat trick in Sevilla’s 5-0 win over 10-man Getafe. Malaga beat visiting Deportivo La Coruna 2-0, and Granada drew 1-1 with Real Betis at home to stay in the relegation zone. Even though he was eventually beaten by Nolito, Navas had another outstanding performance between the posts for Madrid since
taking it over from club legend Iker Casillas this summer. Navas, who set a club record with five straight clean sheets to start the season, conceded just his third goal in 12 matches overall. The Costa Rica keeper made four excellent saves in the first half and consistently bailed out Madrid’s backline that was overrun by Celta’s attacking trio of Nolito, Fabian Orellana and Iago Aspas. “Honestly, Navas stopped four clear goals. You have to congratulate him, I don’t know how he did it,” said Nolito, who scored his seventh goal in the league to match Ronaldo’s haul. “I take away our effort with only 10 men. An apartheid-era political prisoner turned multi-millionaire mining tycoon joined the race to be FIFA president on Saturday. South African Tokyo Sexwale (sesh-WAH’-lay) announced his intention to run in next year’s emergency election to replace Sepp Blatter after receiving the endorsement of the South African Football Association. Sexwale will submit his candidature papers to FIFA to meet Monday’s deadline after receiving the unanimous backing of his national federation, he said at a news conference in Johannesburg. If he’s supported by Africa’s 53 other FIFA member countries, he will gain a significant boost in the contest to head the world’s most popular sport. “I will not disappoint you,” Sexwale told South African reporters on Saturday. The 62-year-old Sexwale’s varied credentials include being a current FIFA anti-racism adviser, a former prisoner on Robben Island alongside Nelson Mandela, and the previous host of South Africa’s version of “The Apprentice” television show. He is also a hugely successful businessman with interests in the mining and energy sectors, and whose wealth has been estimated at $200 million. Four other men have already submitted their papers for the FIFA election: UEFA President Michel Platini, whose chances appear to have been thwarted by an ethics investigation, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, ex-FIFA official Jerome Champagne and David Nakhid, a former player from Trinidad and Tobago. To stand as a candidate, hopefuls must be nominated by at least five national federations, and show they
have played an active role in football for two of the last five years. They will also face ethics checks. FIFA will elect a new president on Feb. 26 following Blatter’s decision in June to step down amid corruption probes into the world soccer body by American and Swiss investigators. Blatter and Platini, who was previously the favorite to win the election, have both been provisionally suspended for 90 days by FIFA’s ethics committee over a payment of 2 million Swiss francs (about $2 million) Blatter made to Platini in 2011. That could ruin Platini’s chances of standing for president. “The brand of FIFA is severely damaged today following various scandals and other allegations that we are hearing about,” Sexwale said. “It needs to be restored.” If Sexwale is backed as the preferred candidate for the whole African continent, that could put him in a strong position. Africa is FIFA’s largest continental confederation with 54 voting national associations. Longtime Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou, who is interim FIFA president during Blatter’s suspension, said he will not stand in the election. Another possible African candidate, Liberian FA president Musa Bility, has failed to gain the backing of the rest of Africa. As well as working on FIFA’s anti-discrimination task force, Sexwale has mediated for FIFA in the dispute between the Israeli and Palestinian soccer federations, a diplomacy mission given to him by Blatter. MILAN — Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at Palermo in a match that saw the visitors reduced to 10 men as they failed to move provisionally two points clear atop Serie A on Saturday. Ivan Perisic broke the deadlock on the hour mark but Inter’s lead lasted just six minutes before Alberto Gilardino leveled. Inter defender Jeison Murillo was sent off 10 minutes from time following a second yellow card but the visitors still managed to force Palermo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino into more crucial saves. Inter moved level on points with leader Fiorentina, which hosts third-placed Roma Sunday. Inter is below Fiorentina on goal difference, with both teams a point ahead of Roma. “In the first half Palermo put us in difficulty because there was too much space between our attack and midfield,” Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. “We were unlucky at times, like when we had a player sent off. At the moment we are at the top but we are not happy with this match because we wanted to win.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 12th goal in as many games and Keylor Navas made several saves to help Real Madrid earn a deceptively tough 3-1 win at second-place Celta Vigo on Saturday and provisionally increase its Spanish league lead. Ronaldo and Danilo gave Madrid a two-goal lead at Balaidos Stadium by the 23rd minute, but Madrid needed Navas to protect the advantage before Celta lost Gustavo Cabral to a second yellow card in the 57th. Despite playing a man down, Manuel “Nolito” Agudo got a deserved goal for the hosts in the 85th and Celta almost leveled before Marcelo scored Madrid’s last goal just before the final whistle. Celta’s first loss of the season left Madrid as the only undefeated team in the 20-team league. Madrid rose three points clear of both the Galician club and defending champion Barcelona, which hosts Eibar on Sunday. Madrid coach Rafa Benitez attributed his team’s shaky showing to tired legs from Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. “It’s positive for the group that they know that we can win points while struggling,” Benitez said. Elsewhere, Kevin Gameiro scored a hat trick in Sevilla’s 5-0 win over 10-man Getafe. Even though he was eventually beaten by Nolito, Navas had another outstanding performance between the posts for Madrid since
taking it over from club legend Iker Casillas this summer. Navas, who set a club record with five straight clean sheets to start the season, conceded just his third goal in 12 matches overall. The Costa Rica keeper made four excellent saves in the first half and consistently bailed out Madrid’s backline that was overrun by Celta’s attacking trio of Nolito, Fabian Orellana and Iago Aspas. “Honestly, Navas stopped four clear goals. You have to congratulate him, I don’t know how he did it,” said Nolito, who scored his seventh goal in the league to match Ronaldo’s haul. “I take away our effort with only 10 men. We have to be happy despite the loss.” Still without injured stars Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, Ronaldo ensured Madrid got off to a great start in the eighth when he passed to Lucas Vazquez before making a clever run to slip behind Celta defender Jonathan Castro and receive Vazquez’s return pass before slotting home. An apartheid-era political prisoner turned multi-millionaire mining tycoon joined the race to be FIFA president on Saturday. South African Tokyo Sexwale (sesh-WAH’-lay) announced his intention to run in next year’s emergency election to replace Sepp Blatter after receiving the endorsement of the South African Football Association. Sexwale will submit his candidature papers to FIFA to meet Monday’s deadline after receiving the unanimous backing of his national federation, he said at a news conference in Johannesburg. If he’s supported by Africa’s 53 other FIFA member countries, he will gain a significant boost in the contest to head the world’s most popular sport. “I will not disappoint you,” Sexwale told South African reporters on Saturday. The 62-year-old Sexwale’s varied credentials include being a current FIFA anti-racism adviser, a former prisoner on Robben Island alongside Nelson Mandela, and the previous host of South Africa’s version of “The Apprentice” television show. He is also a hugely successful businessman with interests in the mining and energy sectors, and whose wealth has been estimated at $200 million. Four other men have already submitted their papers for the FIFA election: UEFA President Michel Platini, whose chances appear to have been thwarted by an ethics investigation, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, ex-FIFA official Jerome Champagne and David Nakhid, a former player from Trinidad and Tobago. To stand as a candidate, hopefuls must be nominated by at least five national federations, and show they
have played an active role in football for two of the last five years. They will also face ethics checks. FIFA will elect a new president on Feb. 26 following Blatter’s decision in June to step down amid corruption probes into the world soccer body by American and Swiss investigators. Blatter and Platini, who was previously the favorite to win the election, have both been provisionally suspended for 90 days by FIFA’s ethics committee over a payment of 2 million Swiss francs (about $2 million) Blatter made to Platini in 2011. That could ruin Platini’s chances of standing for president. “The brand of FIFA is severely damaged today following various scandals and other allegations that we are hearing about,” Sexwale said. “It needs to be restored.” If Sexwale is backed as the preferred candidate for the whole African continent, that could put him in a strong position. Africa is FIFA’s largest continental confederation with 54 voting national associations. Longtime Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou, who is interim FIFA president during Blatter’s suspension, said he will not stand in the election. Another possible African candidate, Liberian FA president Musa Bility, has failed to gain the backing of the rest of Africa. As well as working on FIFA’s anti-discrimination task force, Sexwale has mediated for FIFA in the dispute between the Israeli and Palestinian soccer federations, a diplomacy mission given to him by Blatter. MILAN — Inter Milan was held to a 1-1 draw at Palermo in a match that saw the visitors reduced to 10 men as they failed to move provisionally two points clear atop Serie A on Saturday. Ivan Perisic broke the deadlock on the hour mark but Inter’s lead lasted just six minutes before Alberto Gilardino leveled. Inter defender Jeison Murillo was sent off 10 minutes from time following a second yellow card but the visitors still managed to force Palermo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino into more crucial saves. Inter moved level on points with leader Fiorentina, which hosts third-placed Roma Sunday. Inter is below Fiorentina on goal difference, with both teams a point ahead of Roma. “In the first half Palermo put us in difficulty because there was too much space between our attack and midfield,” Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. “We were unlucky at times, like when we had a player sent off. At the moment we are at the top but we are not happy with this match because we wanted to win.”
Earlier Empoli beat Genoa 2-0, while Bologna fought back to win 2-1 at fellow promoted side Carpi and move off the bottom of the table. Inter was looking to return to the top of Serie A following two successive draws and a defeat, while Palermo had bounced back with victory at Bologna after four defeats in a row. MotoGP championship leader Valentino Rossi will start the season finale in Valencia from the back of the grid after the Italian was penalised for clashing with Marc Marquez at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday. Dani Pedrosa claimed victory at Sepang and was followed home by Rossi’s championship rival and Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo, who has now closed the gap to seven points ahead of the decider in Spain in two weeks’ time. Rossi finished third but had an anxious wait to see if he would keep the points after making contact with Marquez and sending the Spaniard spinning into the gravel. After an inquiry, Race Direction opted against docking the seventime premier class champion any points but imposed a “three point penalty” that will see him start at the back of the field in Valencia. The Yamaha team have appealed the decision. Prior to the race, Rossi had claimed former champion Marquez wanted fellow Spaniard Lorenzo to win the championship instead of him and the simmering relationship between the pair boiled over at the Sepang International Circuit. The duo darted into corners trying to get the upper hand, swapping places and touching wheels a number of times until Rossi slowed at Turn 14, forced Marquez wide and then flicked out a knee, which resulted in his rival’s Honda sliding into the gravel. Rossi said it was a racing incident and regretted his rival had crashed out. “You know unfortunately I lose a lot of time with Marc and in Turn 14 I tried to go wide to get a better line to make him slow because he just rides to cause me
some problems,” MotoGP’s official site quoted Rossi as saying. “Unfortunately he came to me and I think he crashed in that moment. It’s a shame because I think that in a normal race we can stay and fight with Jorge and we lost some more points. “In Valencia, will be more difficult,” he added, looking ahead to the season-ending race on Nov. 8. By avoiding disqualification, Rossi remains on 312 points ahead of the Valencia Grand Prix, seven ahead of Lorenzo with 25 available for victory in Spain. There was more drama on the podium as the pro-Rossi Malaysian crowd booed Lorenzo when he picked up his second-place prize, with the Spaniard storming off immediately after the anthems and not waiting to pose for photographs. SINGAPORE — Top-seeded Simona Halep defeated U.S. Open champion Flavia Pennetta 6-0, 6-3 to win the opening match of the WTA Finals on Sunday. Halep, last year’s finalist in Singapore, raced to a 6-0 1-0 lead before Pennetta won a game. “I feel that I can play my best tennis here,” Halep said. “I can say that I didn’t play my best today, but I played good tennis. I played solid. I was dominating the match.” The Romanian saved both break points she faced in the second
set and broke Pennetta’s serve four times. Pennetta, who only qualified for the WTA Finals last week, had beaten Halep the last time they played in the U.S. Open semifinals. “I didn’t play the right game against her at the U.S. Open,” Halep said. “Here I was well-prepared and I knew how to play against her.” On Sunday, Pennetta was a step slower and Halep was on form from the minute she walked on court. “She play I think really consistent,” said Pennetta, making her WTA Finals debut. “She was play-
ing really well today. Maybe I had not too much energy. I didn’t push a lot like I always do.” Pennetta only found out last week that she qualified for her first singles appearance at the WTA Finals. Maldives leader says VP’s arrest over boat blast ‘not easy’
MALE, Maldives — The Maldives’ president appealed for calm throughout the island nation Sunday, after his deputy was arrested on suspicion of treason for allegedly plotting to assassinate him with an explosion on his boat. P r e s i d e n t Ya m e e n A b d u l Gayoom, who escaped the Sept. 28 blast unhurt, told reporters it “was not easy” to see the arrest of Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, a young protege appointed to the office only three months ago. “It was taken for the security of the country,” Gayoom said, but added that he would wait for the case to go to trial before beginning any process to impeach him. The arrest marks the latest in a series of political shakedowns and power struggles in the Maldives that have seized the fragile, young democracy since it held its first elections in 2008, after 30 years of autocracy under Gayoom’s halfbrother. After Adeeb’s arrest on Saturday, a small group of his supporters staged a protest that led to a police crackdown, with 17 people detained. The home minister said Adeeb would be charged with “high treason,” an offense not specified in the penal code but still used in the Maldives for terrorism or offenses against the state by government officials. Gayoom said the investigation suggested Adeeb was connected with two soldiers arrested for tampering with evidence on the boat soon after the blast. He said police had found bomb-making materials
at their homes. Adeeb’s lawyer on Saturday called the allegations against his client untrue. During a hearing in which Adeeb and his lawyers participated by teleconference, the court approved his detention for 15 days of questioning while police conduct raids on the homes and businesses of his family and associates. Gayoom has been dodging controversy since he won the presidency in 2013 after hotly disputed elections against a predecessor who was forced to resign three years earlier amid public protests. Former President Mohamed Nasheed is now serving 13 years behind bars on a conviction delivered in a rushed trial widely criticized as unfair. The 33-year-old Adeeb, who was hugely popular with young Maldivians, was credited with delivering the important youth vote to Gayoom. Some 40 percent of the mostly Muslim country’s 350,000 people are aged from 15 to 34. In July, Adeeb was moved from the Tourism Ministry to become vice president, after lawmakers loyal to Gayoom impeached his predecessor and lowered the minimum presidential age from 35 to 30. The promotion put Adeeb next in line for the presidency, should Gayoom be unable to govern. Adeeb was also given influence and
powers beyond those of his elder colleagues, including heading the country’s economic council and mapping out plans for a special economic zone. Meanwhile, he kept control over tourism — a major industry for an island nation known worldwide for its palmfringed beaches, clear waters and luxury resorts. After the explosion tore through the president’s boat last month, rumors soon began circulating that Adeeb was behind the blast — allegations he emphatically denied. Investigators ruled out mechanical failure as a cause of the blast, and the government said an explosive device had been placed under the seat the president usually occupied. Authorities carried out raids on the homes and businesses of Adeeb’s associates, but have refused to give any details about what may allegedly have been found. Gayoom also sacked his defense minister and the police commissioner after the blast. Adeeb was taken into custody Saturday at the airport immediately upon returning from an official visit to China. Police spokesman Ismail Ali said Adeeb was wanted “on suspicion of involvement in the boat blast.” Three soldiers were also arrested Saturday, including a former member of Adeeb’s security detail and a member of the army’s bomb squad, bringing the total number detained in the boat blast investigation to seven. Ten thousand workers to stake rally
BOGOR - Some 10 thousand workers grouped in the National Labor Union (SPN) will stage a rally in front of the Presidential Palace on Tuesday (Oct 27), to reject a draft government regulation on wages, following the issuance of the fourth economic policy package by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). “On Tuesday (Oct 27), some 10 thousand workers who are members of the SPN from 12 provinces, will go the Presidential Palace in Jakarta to express their rejection of the draft government regulation on waging,” Iwan Kusmawan, chairman of the SPN executive board, said on Sunday.
The plan to stage the rally was discussed in a coordinating meeting of the SPN in Bogor, Saturday (Oct. 24). The labor union strongly rejected the draft regulation because the government has issued the policy without discussing the matter with labor unions, he added.
The SPN insisted that labor unions must be involved in deciding the minimal wages for workers through the Wage Council. Besides, the salary increase is decided based on just the inflation rate and the economic growth, without referring to a proper living wage needs, he remarked. “It’s obvious that the policy is against the Law No 13/2003 on manpower,” he noted. Muhammad Rusdi has said the new wage policy which is part of the fourth economic policy package announced recently, will only benefit employers. “The wage policy will only benefit employers and does not accommodate workers’ aspirations. Despite salary hike based on inflation and economic growth, Indonesian workers will remain poor although they are employed,” he said in a press conference on Friday (Oct. 16). It is likely that only Indonesian
workers who have been employed remain poor because they receive low salaries. In fact, in other countries, unemployed people receive allowances so that they can lead a fair life. “For workers and other people, wages are the main artery. The government has sided with the employers ever since the first, second and third economic policy packages were issued. Warships ready for haze evacuation
JAKARTA - Indonesia has put warships on standby to evacuate people affected by acrid haze from forest fires which has killed at least 10 and caused respiratory illnesses in half a million, officials said Saturday. For nearly two months, thousands of fires caused by slashand-burn farming in Indonesia have choked vast expanses of Southeast Asia, forcing schools to close and scores of flights and some international events to be cancelled. The government has decided to send ships to haze-affected provinces to evacuate victims, especially children and women, if necessary, with two warships deployed to Kalimantan on Friday and another car-
rying medical workers and health equipment expected Saturday. Military spokesman Tatang Sulaiman said the warships, which will be standing by in Banjarmasin, the capital of south Kalimantan, could serve as evacuation centers and hospitals for those affected by the haze. Tatang said there was no immediate plan to bring people onboard but that could change if hospitals on land reach capacity or become overwhelmed. “The ships are sent just in case children or pregnant women must be relocated from the local health facilities, it does not mean everyone would be put into the ships,” Tatang said. “So far health facilities on the
ground in Kalimantan are still trying their best, we are just getting ready by deploying warships,” Tatang said. Each warship can carry up to 2000 people and has 344 beds onboard. “For now the ships will be standing by. We will begin evacuation when there is an instruction from the government,” navy spokesman Muhammad Zainuddin told AFP. The government has deployed around 30 aircraft to fight the fires and for cloud seeding with 22,000 troops on the ground to combat the blazes. Indonesian disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the fires had killed 10 people so far, some fighting the
blazes while others died of respiratory illnesses or medical conditions exacerbated by the pollution. “The impact of the forest fires has caused 10 people in Sumatra and Kalimantan to die, directly and indirectly,” Nugroho said. The figure did not include seven hikers killed in a wildfire on Java last week. The agency estimated at least half a million people have suffered from respiratory illness since the fires started in July and 43 million people have been affected in the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Nugroho said the figure was likely just the tip of the iceberg because many people did not go to health facilities for treatment.
More than 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of land has been burned and six provinces severely affected by the haze, according to Indonesia’s forestry ministry. “This is due to human acts because 99 percent of forest fires were started deliberately. This is an extraordinary crime against humanity,” Nugroho said. Other countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Japan have sent assistance to help Indonesia fighting the forest fires. With Malaysia, Singapore and parts of Thailand already affected, the Philippines Friday said the haze had now spread there, disrupting air traffic and prompting warnings for residents to wear face masks. 17 killed when fire breaks out in Manado’s karaoke bar
MANADO — Police say 17 people have been killed in a fire that broke out in a packed karaoke bar on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island. Witnesses told authorities the fire started at around 1 a.m. Sunday on the second floor of the three-story building as hundreds of people filled the club in downtown Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province. Manado city police chief Col. Rio Permana said all twelve of people who died in the Inul Vizta Karaoke club — 7 men and 5 women — were Indonesians. Most of them died as the result of smoke inhalation injuries rather than burns. About 32 others were being hospitalized. He said police are still investigating the cause of fires. It took firefighters several hours to bring the blaze under control. (ap)

Business deals valued at $19.5 billion, including joint projects between Indonesian state utilities and U.S. firms in the power sector, are due to be announced, according to Indonesian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about planning for the trip. Obama, who lived in Indonesia as a child, visited the country twice during his first term as he sought to put more emphasis on America’s ties with Asia. But like many countries in the neighborhood, Indonesia remains careful to balance its relations between the U.S.
and China, the region’s dominant economy. Indonesia doesn’t count itself among nations contesting for islands in the disputed South China Sea, although it is concerned that China’s expansive maritime claims extend to the waters of Indonesia’s Natuna Islands, where Indonesian officials say they want more U.S. investment. Reflecting the maritime security concerns, the U.S. is expected to provide more support for the sprawling archipelago’s coast guard. The two leaders will also discuss Islamic extremism. Indonesia, the world’s largest majority-Muslim nation, does not contribute to the military effort against Islamic State group, but has been an outspoken critic of the group, which has drawn hundreds of Indonesian recruits to fight in Syria and Iraq.

Concern is growing about hundreds of thousands of migrants arriving in Europe, many from war zones in the Middle East, and camping in western Balkan countries in ever colder conditions as winter approaches. More than 680,000 migrants and refugees have crossed to Europe by sea so far this year, fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, according to the International Organization for Migration. Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania said they would close their borders if Germany or other countries shut the door on refugees, warning they would not let the Balkan region become a “buffer zone” for stranded migrants. “The three countries, we are standing ready, if Germany and Austria close their borders, not to allow our countries to become buffer zones. We will be ready to close borders,” Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov told reporters. European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has invited the leaders of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia to Sunday’s mini-summit. Abrasion got worse said former legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nyoman Oka Antara, after the rampant backfilling or reclamation of beaches in Bali, including the backfill that took place at Ngurah Rai Airport for runway extensions and the backfill of Serangan Beach that was meant to serve the development of the “Bali Turtle Island Development,” said former legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nyoman Oka Antara. Karangasem has the second longest stretch of beach in Bali after Buleleng and approximately 30 percent of Karangasems’s 87km of beach are damaged by abrasion. Damage can be seen at Labuhan Beach, near the Pertamina Depot in Manggis, Buitan Beach, Sengkidu to Candidasa, Jasri Beach, Ujung, Seraya, Bunutan to Amed at Purwakerti village, Tulamben, and almost all the beaches in the subdistrict of Kubu. Severe abrasion has eroded the cemetery of Tukad Besi village during the ferocious wave season a few months ago. A number of graves collapsed and the bones became scattered. Families of the deceased finally amassed the bones that were scattered by the abrasion waves and reburied them further down the beach. In addition to graves, a number of temples such as the Pura Ratu Ayu as well as the Pura Dadia Gajahpara at Tianyar Barat also continue to be eroded by abrasion. Moreover, about five meters of the compound wall of the Gajahpara clan temple on the seaside of Tamansari, Tianyar Barat, also collapsed few months ago. At least, four villas or hotels on the beach are also eroded. Many lands of local residents as well as coconut trees on Jasri and Kubu Beach have disappeared into the sea. So far, the handling of the coastal erosion remains minimal. The central government, through the Bali-Penida River Agency have only secured the beach with boulders along some 200 meters on Candidasa Beach, 100 meters on Jasri Beach, about 50 meters on Ujung Beach and 100 meters on Pilihan Beach, Tianyar Timur where the local cemetery is eroded. Acting Regent of Karangasem, Ida Bagus Ngurah Arda, some time ago accompanied by his staff visited the coastal erosion that has been breaking down the compound wall of a temple in Kubu. His staff, Nyoman Sutirtayasa, was asked to take preventitive measures in order that the temple not continue to disintegrate. SEOUL, South Korea — This weekend, scores of Koreans on both sides of the border are holding reunions with family members divided by the Korean War some six decades ago. Most have not seen each other since then — and may never again. This is the second three-day session of reunions organized by the two countries held at the Diamond Mountain resort in North Korea. South Korean Lee Cheon-wu, a 78-year-old retired farmer, was at the first session, held during the middle of the week. Here, in his own words, is what he will remember about what will likely be his last meeting with his 84-yearold sister, North Korean Ri Mun Wu. When the North Korean participants came into the reunion center, I quickly recognized my elder sister because she looks exactly like our late mother. I quickly shouted, “Sister!” and rushed over and embraced her. She asked me “Who are you?” So I said, “It’s me. Cheonwu!” She wept and hugged me. They look so much alike, it really feels like I reunited with my mother, who died 24 years ago. She was 12 and I was 6 when she was sent to North Korea in 1943, before the war, so we
didn’t share many stories about the good old days. We just talked about how we’ve lived in the years since. She had a big misunderstanding about our parents so I tried to resolve that, but it didn’t work. My parents sent her to a relative’s house in Hamhung in North Korea because they couldn’t financially take care of all their children at the time. They planned to get her later, but they couldn’t because the Korean War broke out in 1950. My sister said a relative there told her that our parents had sold her, so the new family forced her to do all the housework like dishwashing and rice-cooking. I repeatedly told her that our parents didn’t sell her and that they tried to get her back when the situation got better but she wouldn’t believe it. I learned she was alive about eight years ago when an ethnic Korean Chinese visited me and said my sister was looking for me. We exchanged letters and photos through this broker, who told me they could bring her to a certain place in China to arrange a meeting with her if I came to China with 2 million won ($1,770). But I didn’t do it because I worried they might be trying to swindle me. This week,
I took the two letters they said my sister wrote and asked her if she’d really written them. She’s now suffering Alzheimer’s disease and she couldn’t remember. But I came to believe they were her letters after talking with her. I brought two suitcases full of medicine, pain killers, medicated patches, cosmetics, nutritional supplements, long underwear, a coat, a parka and pants. When I asked her to put on some of the clothes, I found she was wearing three thin long johns. I told her I’m not wearing any long johns and she was really surprised. She’s 84 so she’s old and thin and more sensitive to cold. Her Alzheimer’s, age and a hearing problem meant that we wouldn’t have been able to reunite if this happened two or three years later. I also gave her $500, and she gave us three bottles of liquor and some cookies. She said she was sorry for not giving me more even though I gave her many presents. “Please, don’t say that,” I said. “I didn’t come here to get presents from you. You probably didn’t come for the presents either.” “You were smart when you were a little boy and you’re still smart,” she said. (ap)

Presenting the project Thursday, chief architect Jordi Fauli said the central “Tower of Jesus Christ,” the tallest of the six, will make the architectural marvel that draws millions of visitors each year one for the record books when it is finished in a little over a decade. “The central tower of 172.5 meters (566 feet) will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because the tallest tower in Europe is Ulm, at 162 meters (531.5 feet),” Fauli said. St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome will still have the tallest interior. The Sagrada Familia, an emblematic fixture of the Barcelona skyline and a major tourist site, had its first stone laid in 1882. It is 70percent complete and currently tops out at 112 meters (367 feet). Fauli said the plan to have the towers and most of the church’s structure completed in 2026 for the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death is still on schedule. He said there will still be some elements left to finish, such as decorations. “It’s difficult to predict but we can say that it will be completed by 2030, 2032,” he said. The “Tower of Jesus Christ” will be crowned by a cross and tightly surrounded by five other towers, one dedicated to Mary and four slightly shorter ones for the four evangelists. Fauli unveiled the next phase of the construction in a newly finished chamber that formed a small amphitheater, perched 60 meters (196 feet) above the floor of the church from where hundreds of visitors gazed at the church’s stained glass windows and arching ceilings. The tower will rise directly above the chamber, which is designed to support the weight of the towers and channel sunlight into the building. A mere 15 years ago, there was no roof on the inner part of the church as it stood between the two beautiful facades with eight bell towers that leave spectators overcome with awe, one side looking like a sand castle and the other a work of art inspired by cubist painting. Gaudi won the patronage of some of Barcelona’s wealthiest industrialist and upper-crust families, who commissioned him to build gorgeous homes and other daring buildings and parks that have helped make Barcelona a leading tourist destination. A fervent Catholic, Gaudi largely dedicated his life to the project, incorporating both Christian symbolism and organic forms into a unique aesthetic. Gaudi, who died in 1926 after being struck by a trolley, never expected the cathedral to be completed in his lifetime. Only one facade was finished when he died. Fauli took over as the chief architect in 2012. He inherited the charge of carrying on the task of making Gaudi’s drawings, some of which were only rough sketches, into the massive monument that is now reaching its conclusion. The monument received more than 3.2 million visits in 2014, making it one of the biggest tourist sites in Spain. The entrance fees of 15-20 euros ($17-22) finance the construction budget of 25 million euros ($28.38 million) a year. (ap)

said that Bali is very small and as such its carrying capacity is quite limited. This spatial limitation can be seen when we compare remaining green open spaces to land that has been built on - the ration is no longer ideal. Denpasar as an urban area has very limited availability of open green space. Conditions will only worsen if Benoa Bay is made into a tourist area, where will there be any open spaces left? Besides, the secondary effects of such a projects are also considerable. For example, some estimate say that the population of the area would increase by some 600,000 people. “This will overload Bali, it doesn’t make sense,” said Suryaman worriedly. (ara)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Cumberbatch and ‘Sherlock’ to return for 4th season
LONDON — There will be more mysteries to solve for the sleuth of Baker Street.
The BBC confirmed Saturday that filming on a fourth series of the hit detective drama “Sherlock” will start in next spring. The modern-day update of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his stalwart companion, Dr. Watson. Since “Sherlock” first aired in 2010, Cumberbatch has become a global star, Academy Award-nominated for “The Imitation Game.” Freeman has starred in “The Hobbit” movie saga and in TV’s “Fargo.” The BBC in Britain and PBS’ “Masterpiece” in the United States have also announced they will broadcast a 90-minute “Sherlock” special episode on Jan. 1. The album “25” is being released on November 20. The singer told fans in a letter posted on her social media accounts this week that she chose the title because her 25th birthday marked a turning point. “My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record,” she

THE DEVELOPMENT of Bali, has tended to ignore local wisdom and what it has to say about sustaining culture and people. It has become quite challenging to keep the negative impacts of development less than the positive impacts. Threats to the fundamental elements of Balinese culture are increasing. Balinese people must therefor be acutely aware of maintaining their heritage and the potential that it represents. The inclusion of Besakih as a national tourism strategic area (KSPN) is evidence of the most severe kind of damage to the spiritual locomotive of Balinese people. A former officials of Bank Indonesia, Made Sadguna, who is now serving as a Commissioner of the Prama Swadaya Adidaya, along with DBA and Dr. Supartha Djelantik, said that there are currently two major issues that are polarizing the Balinese community. The first is the issue of the Benoa Bay Reclamation plan, the second is the inclusion of Besakih in the KSPN.

the Political Division of ForBALI, Suriadi Darmoko. Suriadi, that in regards to the massive rejection of the project, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry should stop the ongoing environmental impact assessment
(Amdal) process for the Benoa Bay project, a process that the community at large has also opposed for its lack of transparency. So far, the public has been unable to access the terms of reference or even the pre-environmental impact analysis.
