NEW YORK - “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence on Tuesday topped a Forbes magazine list of the world’s highest-paid actress for the second straight year,earning some $46 million, followed by Melissa McCarthy. Lawrence, 26, took the top spot largely through a slice of the profits from the final movie in the “Hunger Games” franchise, as well as a big upfront fee for her forthcoming space adventure movie “Passengers,” Forbes said. Yet Lawrence’s estimated payday was likely well below that for Hollywood’s leading men, Forbes said, despite the actress sparking a debate about the gender pay gap last year. She declared she was “finished being adorable” when it came to negotiating better deals for herself. Lawrence’s 2016 earnings dropped 11.5 percent from her 2015 total of $52 million. Forbes will release its list of the world’s highest-paid actors on Thursday. Last year Robert Downey Jr. topped the list with an estimated $80 million. Neither however came close to pop star Taylor Swift, who was named the top earning celebrity of 2016 earlier this year, pulling in an estimated $170 million from record sales and her world tour. McCarthy took home $33 million in earnings, up $10 million from 2015 in part from her payday for the controversial female reboot of “Ghostbusters.” It was the biggest annual paycheck to date for the star of television comedy “Mike and Molly.” McCarthy, 45, also launched a clothing line for sizes 4 to 28 after becoming frustrated at the outfits available for larger women. Scarlett Johansson of “Captain America: Civil Wars” was third at $25 million, down nearly 30 percent from 2015. Colombia, FARC rebels reach deal to end half-century of bloodshed

BOGOTA/HAVANA - Colombia’s government and Marxist FARC rebels reached a final peace deal on Wednesday to end a five-decade war which once took the resource-rich country to the brink of collapse. Under the historic agreement to end one of the world’s longest conflicts, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) will lay down arms and reintegrate into civilian life. More than 220,000 people were killed in the conflict, tens of thousands disappeared and millions fled their homes because of the violence. The accord, which was reached after almost four years of talks in Cuba, sparked celebrations in parks and bars in the Colombian capital, Bogota. It will now go to a plebiscite vote on Oct. 2. “Today I can say - from the bottom of my heart - that I have

fulfilled the mandate that you gave me,” said President Juan Manuel Santos, 65, who was re-elected in 2014 on the promise of a peace deal. “Colombians: the decision is in your hands. Never before have our citizens had within their reach the key to their future,” he said in a televised address. Most opinion polls suggest Colombians will back the deal but Santos, who has staked his legacy

on peace, will face fierce opposition from powerful sectors of the country who believe the only solution is to finish the FARC militarily. The deal is opposed by two former Colombian presidents, including popular right-wing hardliner Alvaro Uribe. In Bogota, several hundred people gathered around a giant screen in the rain to listen to the announcement, waving Colombian flags and banners. “I’m so happy. It was time to end the war,” said Margarita Nieto, a 28-year-old accountant. “I know what is coming will be hard, but together we can cope.” Others are more skeptical about the terms of the agreement, especially the participation of FARC rebels in politics and the fact that

they will not serve jail time for crimes committed during the war. “The future worries me,” said Susana Antequeria, 30, as she milled around the screen. “But I’ll put up with it for peace.” Under the deal, the FARC will have non-voting representation in Congress until 2018 and can participate in elections. From then on, the 7,000 former rebels will have to win votes like any other political party, Santos said. The final text of the deal will be sent to Colombia’s Congress on Thursday and will be available on the internet and social media, he said. “We have won the most beautiful of all battles” lead FARC negotiator Ivan Marquez said

In addition, the Indonesian language has been used widely, especially in education. “Education in Indonesia must use the Indonesian language so that children are not longer willing to communicate in the language of their parents,” he said. Vice Chancellor IV of the Udayana University, Prof. I Made Suastra, Ph.D., did not dismiss if there are many vocabularies in the regional language have vanished or even gone

extinct. They could not be determined quantitatively because it has to go through an accurate research. “It must be found out regarding how to maintain the regional languages, whether they are still used by the native speakers or there are any media used for the preservation of the language. We very much need the study in the future to anticipate the regional languages of the country,” he said. Especially for Balinese language, continued Suastra, the condition is somewhat better than the other regional languages such as Sasak language. It happens because there are many media that can be developed to preserve Balinese language so as to

be used by speakers. It can even be disseminated through local television broadcast by using Balinese language and the local print media. “Although there is a shift, so far we can still speak the language continuously. However, ‘we can now see that only in small percentage of the newlywed young couples remain to speak Balinese language as their mother tongue,’” added this sociolinguist. According to Suastra, such a tendency must be observed in the future. It must be attempted to raise the awareness of parents as the native speakers of the local Balinese language to inherit the mother tongue to their children.

A linguist, Dr. Sudaryanto, confirmed that regional languages currently seem to be marginalized and endangered. Nevertheless, he does not necessarily become pessimistic, because the problem is not just about the language. It must be seen as a whole how is the condition of this nation. “So, it is not just about the matter that the language is in recessive condition, but also the attitude of Indonesian people when facing many things whether they feel to be pressured or not. I think this is the main issue,” he said. According to him, Indonesia must appreciate the richness owned by the nation including the wealth of language. From this mindset, it will

emerge a kind of security mechanism by Indonesian people for their regional language. “When getting to particular point, people may feel pressured, but at the same time there is possibility for them to raise the awareness. This also happens to Indonesia because from the history along thousands of years, we never really sink,” added one of the founders of the MLI. At a certain point, added Sudaryanto, there may be a language drowning because it has no more speakers. Genuine masks of wayang wong sanctified and preserved by Tejakula village

SINGARAJA - The art of wayang wong or human puppet tradition is a part of culture and sanctified by the community of Tejakula village, Tejakula. The performance of genuine wayang wong masks cannot be displayed in public places. Sanctity of the genuine masks are cared for and guarded. As disclosed by Nyoman Tangkas, the apparatus of Dangka Tegal Mas temple at Tejakula customary village, the wayang wong performance is usually accompanied with baris teruna, baris jojor, baris gede and rejang dewa dance in the ngambek ceremony. Based on the story passed down through generations, the ngambek ceremony is held once at Dangka Tegal Mas temple. Local people believe the ritual is meant to purify the temple and its arched entrance gates (highest level—Ed)

carried out only once forever. “Genuine wayang wong masks are performed coinciding with the ngambek-ngenteg linggih ceremony, known as the biggest ceremony at Tejakula customary village. The existence of the wayang wong mask is estimated to have reached hundreds of years at

the village of Tejakula. “The storyline presented is the death of Beganada in the battlefield. Besides, it also performs the story on the death of Ravana. It is staged in a series of the ngambek ceremonies,” said Gede Suarsana, a Tejakula community leader as well as the player of Sugriva in the wayang wong ballet. In the meantime, the observer of the art of wayang wong, Komang Gede, added that the storyline on the death of Beganada has the meaning that cheating will be destroyed by dharma. Hindu philosophy tells that the power of dharma is never defeated by adharma. “This has something to do and gives philosophy to the com-

munity of Tejakula village, having the pilgrims amounting to hundreds of people. The nature of anger will be defeated by dharma,” he said. After the wayang wong of Tejakula achieved an award from the UNESCO, it has an impression and history of its own. Tejakula village has struggled to introduced the art of wayang wong tradition to the eyes of the world. So, the community then created the replica of the genuine masks. “We very much sanctify the genuine masks. We make the replica of the masks so that people outside the Tejakula village can see how the wayang wong dance looks like. Tejakula community shall be proud of the UNESCO award because the

world has recognized it. The certificate achieved must be maintained,” said Komang Gede. Similar opinion was stated by Pande Gede Mustika, a lecturer of the ISI Denpasar, that wayang wong of Tejakula dominantly presents some chapters of the Ramayana epic. Replica of the wayang wong mask is recognized to be widely circulated in Japan, Sweden and several large cities in Indonesia. “Sanctity and sacredness of the genuine masks are the property of the Desa Temple of Tejakula. We always maintain and preserve them. Only replica of the masks can be performed at hotel or before general public,” he said. (kmb34)

Restoring the glory of agriculture in Bali

Balinese people especially the younger generations have the intention to love the agriculture.

ALL the people living on this earth need to eat. If a country is not able to feed its people, the country will be brittle and result in social conflicts. On that account, President Joko Widodo hoped that Indonesia is able to keep its food security by teaming up with the army. “Our current food security is very ironic. With the condition as an agrarian country having broad expanse of paddy field area, our country imports rice. Conversely, the country exporting rice to us is smaller. Therefore, the president decided to be able to keep food security in the next three years. The army was asked to help government in maintaining food security,” said Commander of the 163/Wira Satya (WSA) Military Resort, I Nyoman Cantiasa, after opening the Bali coordination meeting on planting acceleration from August to September 2016 in the Military Resort Headquarters Denpasar, Monday (Aug. 22). The meeting is aimed at implementing the evaluation to the working program of the 163/ WSA Military Resort under coordination of the Agriculture Agency,

Logistics Agency, Public Works and related agencies, so that he can immediately take a step forward. As a commander, Cantiasa also informed these results of evaluation to his staff so that it will enable the commanders of the military district to take steps forward. “Results of the evaluation regarding the special efforts, area, addition, cropping and absorption of grain and the issues of regional government are expected to support the farmers. TOKYO - Three years of so-called “Abenomics”, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s bold stimulus programme, has failed to dislodge a deflationary mindset among businesses and consumers. As the world’s third-largest economy falters again - with a stronger yen gnawing at overseas profits and domestic consumption sapping companies’ confidence to invest or sufficiently raise wages - firms that increased their prices in the hope of a sustained recovery are rethinking their strategy. PONTIANAK - Indonesias Minister for Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said the government will continue its efforts to bring home 177 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims detained in the Philippines. The Indonesian nationals were detained in Manila when Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s immigration officers caught them with counterfeit Philippines passport, moments before they were scheduled to depart to Saudi Arabia for Hajj pilgrimage. “This is a clear case of fraud where 177 people were lured to go for Hajj pilgrimage using illegal passports as they were unaware of the consequences,” observed Saifuddin, who was on a work visit to Pontianak, West Kalimantan, on Tuesday. The pilgrims departed from the country for the Philippines using Indonesian passports. They were scheduled to depart for Saudi Arabia from the Philippines using

Filipino passports. “In this case, the 177 Indonesians became victims. This is an organized crime and we are in the middle of an investigation to track down the individuals behind all of this,” he reiterated. The government is also taking measures to bring the pilgrims home to Indonesia once all procedures are completed. “Hopefully, this would be resolved soon and they will be able to return home,” he stressed. He further explained that at the moment his office is trying to relocate the shelter where 177 Indonesian pilgrims are detained. “Right now, we are concentrating on relocating them from the current place,

which is not very adequate and comfortable, to a venue arranged by the Indonesian embassy in Manila. Hopefully, it can all be settled soon,” he revealed. The 177 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims were detained in the Philippines as they attempted to undertake pilgrimage using false documents, in order to fit into the Philippines Hajj pilgrim quota. They were then stopped from getting on board the Philippines Airline flight to Madinah. The Religious Minister and the National Police Force continue their efforts to identify the culprit behind this crime. Other government entities involved in the investigation include the Foreign Ministry and the Law and Human Rights Ministry. “We will continue to make serious efforts to bring back our citizens as soon as the process is completed,” he concluded. tanker is being escorted to Tanjung Pinang, the provincial capital of Indonesia’s Riau islands, for further investigation. Vier Abdul Jamal, chief executive of the ship’s owner Vierlines Asia Group, said there was a dispute between the charterer of the vessel and the crew when a promise of bonus payments was unfulfilled.

The tanker disappeared from a port in southern Malaysia on Aug. 16 and authorities there initially suspected it had been hijacked by pirates. Its tracking device had been turned off. The navy said it deployed warships, a maritime patrol plane and a helicopter to find the tanker, which was carrying about 900,000 liters of diesel.(ap)

CP is a non-binding regional consultation forum of ministers of manpower-exporting Asian countries. Established in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2003, the forum comprises Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Hanif underlined that Indonesia is deeply invested in the effort to improve the system for protecting migrant workers and improving their skills now that it is one of the countries with the largest number of migrant workers. Data with the Manpower Ministry showed that more than six million Indonesians are currently employed abroad. Indonesia has also set a good example for other countries when it comes to protecting their migrant workers by improving selection, placement and protection systems, he explained. In addition, it has also imposed a moratorium on sending domestic helpers to Middle Eastern countries, he noted. To improve migrant workers skills, the Manpower Ministry will encourage them not to seek employment in the informal sector abroad and instead become professional workers. 2 in custody after burglary at Indonesian Consulate in NYC

NEW YORK — Two people are in custody in connection with a burglary at the Indonesian Consulate in New York City. Police say they stole alcohol, electronics, a suitcase full of clothing and a minivan they used as their getaway car Monday. Authorities say 18-year-old David Rivera and 16-year-old Tyana Nunez face charges of burglary, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. It wasn’t immediately clear if they had lawyers who could comment on the charges. Police say the two were arrested Tuesday after returning to a Bronx hotel they had burglarized Sunday. Police say Rivera tried to bribe police with some of the stolen items during the arrest. Police say the two entered the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia on East 68th Street in Manhattan through an unlocked door.(ap)

The triple world champion ended the first half of the season in blistering form, opening up a 19-point lead in the standings over Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg with six wins -- four in a row -- from the last seven races. NEW YORK - U.S. Olympic swimmer Jimmy Feigen apologized on Wednesday for omitting key details when he told Rio de Janeiro police this month that he and fellow swimmers had been held up at gunpoint. In a statement on the website of an Austin, Texas, law firm, Feigen said he failed to tell police that the swimmers had urinated behind a building or that teammate Ryan Lochte had torn a metal-framed advertising poster from a wall. “I realize that I made a mistake by omitting these facts. I was trying to protect my teammates and for this I apologize,” said Feigen, 26. Initial claims by the Olympians that they were robbed at gunpoint had embarrassed Brazil, which suffered a series of assaults against visiting government ministers, athletes and tourists, until local police accused Lochte, 32, of making up the story to cover up vandalizing a gas station. Lochte said in an interview on Brazil’s Globo TV on Saturday that he was sorry for exaggerating but that he did not lie. Feigen said a man at the gas station pointed a gun at him, and that he was unsure at the time if the gunman was affiliated with the gas station. He and swimmer Gunnar Bentz gave the man money, he said. “This was the first time I have ever had a gun pointed at me and I was terrified,” he said. Brazilian authorities returned Feigen’s passport and allowed him to leave the country after he paid a 35,000 reais ($11,000) fine.
