Vin Diesel test drives new ‘Fast & Furious’ ride

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — “Fast & Furious” star Vin Diesel traded the franchise’s signature muscle cars for a new kind of ride. The actor, along with co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jason Statham, unveiled Universal Studio Hollywood’s latest attraction: “Fast & Furious — Supercharged,” which opened to the public on Wednesday. “I’m more excited than anybody to get on that tram and I want to be in the front seat and I want to know what this thing feels like,” said Diesel during a press preview for the ride on Tuesday. “Supercharged” is a 3-D motion

Suit filed against Bobbi Kristina Brown’s partner

ATLANTA — A court-appointed representative of Bobbi Kristina Brown has filed a lawsuit against her partner, Nick Gordon, claiming he took money from her and abused her physically and emotionally. Bedilia Hargrove filed a lawsuit against Gordon Wednesday in Fulton County Superior Court. The complaint says Gordon routinely transferred large amounts of money from Brown’s accounts to his without Brown’s permission. The complaint also accused

Gordon of misrepresenting his relationship with Brown, being violent toward her and taking more than $11,000 from her account after she was found face down in a bathtub at her suburban Atlanta townhome. Gordon is accused of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unjust enrichment and conversion. The suit seeks at least $10 million in damages. A call to Gordon’s attorney was not immediately returned. (ap)

Billie Joe Armstrong, Norah Jones perform rare show

NEW YORK — Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and singer Norah Jones appeared in a rare concert together Wednesday night, playing songs they recorded for an album two years ago. The concert wasn’t widely announced and the two performed for about 200 fans in a cellar-like setting called the Bowery Electric in Manhattan. The hour-long performance included songs from their 2013 album, “Foreverly,” a collection of songs inspired by “Songs Our Daddy Taught Us,” an album released by The Everly Brothers in 1958.

Armstrong played guitar and sang, while Jones switched between guitar and piano. The duo’s band also included drums, a standup bass and, at times, a violin and a harmonica. Together, their voices made for a soothing performance far different than Armstrong’s rock performances with Green Day, which was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No other performances were announced. Jones’ band, Puss N Boots, is slated to open for Neil Young during a series of dates in July. (ap)

DENPASAR - All this time Bali tourism is sold cheaply and in a mass. Hotels massively make price war by offering low prices to travelers. As a result, Bali tourism becomes a mass tourism, much visited by travelers. But in terms of quality, it is very low where they have ever-declining length of stay. On the other hand, commitment of the government to realize the quality tourism remains in the level of discourse only and there is no serious commitment to make it happen. “How will we realize quality tourism when the permit of hotel construction in South Bali is still sold out? In other words, the government is unserious to realize the quality tourism. We will be continuously stuck in mass tourism and it is very dangerous for the future of Bali tourism,” said a member of Commission IV of the Bali House, Wayan Rawan Atmaja. perience in tourism field added that the government should change the mindset of tourism development by not selling out licenses of accommodation in South Bali and may not allow tourism development to be centered in the crowded region. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Milan designers blur gender lines

MILAN — Milan designers continue to blur the lines between female and male dressing, to various degrees. For some it is experimentation with textiles, but others are challenging to the core long-held assumptions about what best suits men and women. Alessandro Michele’s speedy Gucci collection for men in January, pulled together in just five days, was very indicative of his fashion leanings, which are decidedly gender flexible. Gucci looks for men included white crocheted shorts with an embroidered butterfly and anchor. Transparent lace shirts with decorative appliques were worn with shiny basketball shorts or athletic pants. Flared elephant pants were paired with glittery sweaters and shirts with pointy collars. A double-breasted suit had a shirt with micro-ruffles and a red flower at the neck. More traditional designs like the belted Gucci trench coat had applique details like a big snarling cat — one of the season’s motifs — and was shown with a red crocheted hat with a pompon. The trench also was worn with a trailing floral scarf. When Michele did dip into the Gucci archives, he turned those references on their head by making a sailor top out of patterned fabric or embroidering anchor detailing on

tops. The red-and-green Gucci stripe circled around a coat like a rainbow motif before it in the 1970s. As he has done in his past two shows, Michele sent both men and women down the runway, often in similar outfits, as he blurred the lines between genders. They wore the same baggy shorts that shouted skirt on first impact, and floral suits were unisex. Michele is breaking with the past in every way conceivable. Last season he ventured to turn the contemporary theater where Gucci has previewed its collections for years into a subway station. This season, he ditched the theater entirely and took the fashion crowd on a weedstrewn journey to a disused former customs station. Michele had the cavernous space lined with red-lacquered chairs with green floral upholstery, and models strutted down an unusually long runway of a couple of hundred meters -- but were spared the turn back. Etro chose female fabrics for the men’s line, continuing the Milan trend of exploring the lines between genders, and maintained a sharp silhouette. “You see no lapels, no buttons, no nothing, everything is super clean even the prints, only egg shapes,” Etro said before the show. The deployment of Etro’s familiar paisley was understated and any tribal touches were reserved for linings of the garments, not for outward display. Etro revamped its showroom into a circle, and at the end the designer joined hands with the models in an outward-facing circle as a tree grew up on the screen behind them. Sustainability is in the air during the Expo 2015 world’s fair, which is in its second month and continues until Oct. 31. Nothing is what it seems at Fendi. The runway appears to be a drying stream bed, but it is actually

an effect achieved with resin. And Silvia Venturini Fendi continues her sleight of hand throughout the menswear collection for next spring and summer. The python peacoat is in reality a technical fabric treated for a shadow effect; the yellow rubber raincoat is actually fine leather and reversible nonetheless. And the tweed coat is in truth stamped cotton with a granite effect. The looks were disciplined and well-proportioned, but relaxed with few suits and no ties. The line focused on mixing materials: a silky shirt with suede jacket and jersey knit pants for a comfortable walk. There were also pebbled prints on super-light-weight matching shorts and button-down tops. Fendi’s colors were inspired by a coastal storm, from the frothy white, sand, slate blue, gray and black palette to the pebbly prints. Bags included satchels and backpacks, some with doll-size backpacks attached, and offered also in pebbled finish or studs creating ethnic patterns. BANGLI - A number of dulang or tray craftsmen at Tegalasah hamlet, Tembuku subdistrict have been confused since the past few months. Due to unfair price competition, the business becomes slow and their income drops dramatically. Actually, it is the only business being able to support their life. One of the tray craftsmen, I Wayan Konten, revealed on Wednesday (Jun. 24) that initially the handicraft business is very promising, and even becomes the main business they do. The result is very good to support daily needs of his family. However, since recent years, the business of making tray craft has proliferated. Under this condition, the competition is increasingly fierce among producers. They are vying to rake a number of collectors ending in different prices on offer. This makes collector purchase from craftsmen that can offer the lowest prices. As a result, craftsmen setting standard price are gradually abandoned by buyers. “This business was very promising. Since the presence of difference in prices at each craftsman, a number of craftsmen having set a standard price are increasingly abandoned by buyers,” he said. Konten added that such unfair price competition often makes his business almost go bankrupt. Since six months ago, his income has decreased about 25 percent. “My income started to decrease since a few months ago. It remains gross sales,” he explained. The matter of different price, added

Having been inactive for long time, the fragmentary show is now re-staged as an effort to remind people about the Batuan Chronicle, including the potential owned by Batuan village. The fragmentary show involves 150 artists of Batuan and surrounding areas, like I Wayan Gita Purnama, Wayan Suarsana, et al as gamelan musician, I Nyoman Budiarta et al. as choreographer and I Ketut Wirtawan as puppeteer. Based on field observation on Wednesday (Jun. 24), a number of craftsmen at Suter were very busy producing wooden crates commonly used to hold tangerine. Moreover, at one of the production sites at roadside, some children were also seen to make wooden crates while filling in their school holidays. One of the wooden crate craftsmen at Suter, Gede Purasta, said that the wooden crates he makes are usually used by farmers and collectors to hold tangerines. The wooden crates are made from local tree named blalu or albizia. As usual, with the help of some laborers he can produce 120 wooden crates each day. Since few days ago, he has produced 240 crates each day. He added that when harvest season comes, the number of wooden crates produced will considerably increase. “During harvest season, we commonly produce up to 600 crates each day,” he said. In the meantime, the selling price of wooden crate with the capacity of 30 kg is IDR 11,000, while the one with capacity of 50 kg is sold for IDR 15,000. Considering the price of raw material is increasingly high this time, he claimed to worry if he stocks wooden crates in too larger number. SINGARAJA - More and more people are getting involved in freshwater aquaculture at Bebetin village, Sawan subdistrict. At this village farmers apply the concept of paddy-cum fish culture. This concept is run by cultivating freshwater fish in the pond of paddy fields having been planted with paddy. With these supporting natural resources, farmers turn optimistic that the aquaculture will provide benefits and increases their income. The paddy-cum-fish program at Bebetin village has received great support from the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Resources. On Wednesday (Jun. 24), the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Resources have restocked 12,000 heads of freshwater fingerlings at Subak Manuk Sesa, Bebetin village. The fingerlings are allocated to 22 farmers denoting the members of Munduk Sari Group. The fish

The Head of Munduk Sari Group of Subak Manuk Sesa, Ketut Guna Kaya, said that the initial idea of paddy-cum-fish culture was seeing the potential of paddy field with endless irrigation that was so supportive. All this time, he and his colleagues rely solely on rice crops. To increase revenue and meet the consumption need of fish, he then tried the freshwater fish cultivation. After trying, in fact the aquaculture gives quite satisfactory results. At local village, there has been a hatchery pond, so that it supports the paddy-cum-fish culture run with dozens of colleagues. “His paddy field is irrigated throughout the year so that it very much supports to be used for culti-

vating freshwater fish. Moreover, at the village there has been a hatchery pond, so that it is beneficial for us,” he said. PARIS - U.S. President Barack Obama reaffirmed in a phone call with his French counterpart Francois Hollande on Wednesday Washington’s commitment to end spying practices deemed “unacceptable” by its allies. The presidents’ conversation, announced by Hollande’s office, came after transparency lobby group WikiLeaks revealed on Tuesday that U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on the last three French presidents. The authoritarian, impoverished nation better known for pursuing a nuclear program despite global criticism announced Friday it has a drug can prevent and cure MERS, Ebola, SARS and AIDS. The secretive state did not provide proof, and the claim is likely to provoke widespread skepticism. The official Korean Central News Agency said scientists developed Kumdang-2 from ginseng grown from fertilizer mixed with rare-earth elements.

According to the pro-North Korea website Minjok Tongshin, the drug was originally produced in 1996. “Malicious virus infections like SARS, Ebola and MERS are diseases that are related to immune systems, so they can be easily treated by Kumdang-2 injection drug, which is a strong immune reviver,” KCNA said. North Korea shut out foreign tourists for half a year with some of the world’s strictest Ebola controls, even though no cases of the disease were reported anywhere near the country, before lifting the restric-

Greece has promised mainly tax increases to achieve budget savings, whereas the IMF would like more spending cuts. Tsipras rejected the creditors’ new suggestions, saying they put both sides further away from

It was held at the Ardha Candra Open Stage of Denpasar Art Center. Each envoy was supported by its leader, namely Denpasar by Mayor I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra and Bangli by Regent Wayan Gianyar. Swadharmita Gamelan Troupe of Cerancam hamlet, Kesiman village, East Denpasar represented Denpasar and envoy of Bangli came with various kinds of properties. They respectively presented Teruna Jaya Dance, creation gamelan composition, creation dance and fragmentary show. Envoy of Denpasar put on attires of endek clothes combined with white color. As the second performance, the Swadharmita Gamelan Troupe taking the position at the north side of the stage presented Teruna Jaya Dance. The dance composed by an artist from North Bali (Buleleng) depicted lively the movement of a man growing adult. It’s emotional and appealing to woman. Though it belongs to male dance, it is danced by woman. It was created by Pan Wadres in the form of Kebyar Legong that was then perfected by I Gede Manik. Next, it featured a creation of gamelan composition entitled “Node” which means dots of tones. It was created by Sang Nyoman Arsa Wijaya presenting the play of sounds in space and time. thetic concept. When paired with the rhythm of music, the gamelan composition is like a classic jazz rhythm that further highlights harmonious tones of melancholy without violence. In the meantime, the creation dance entitled “Ratna Wisaya” is created by I Wayan Juana Adi Saputra featuring the philosophy of amaranth (Balinese: ratna). Refer to Adi Parwa scripture, the flower is interpreted by Hinduism in Bali as a means of worship frequently neglected in front of a shrine to reject negative influences. As final presentation is the fragmentary show entitled “Coronation of Bharata.” The storyline is begun with the return of Bharata and Satrugna from the kingdom of their grandfather. Suddenly, they are surprised by condolence on the death of King Dasaratha. Rama, Shita and Laksamana have been exiled for 14 years due to the demand of their mother Keikayi to King Dasaratha. Bharata is getting furious like burning fire, but instantly dims after seeing the shadow of Sri Rama soothing him. The body of King Dasaratha is then cremated. After the ceremony is over, and Bharata and the whole palace go to pick up Rama so that he is willing to return to Ayodya and occupies the throne. Rama refuses, but blesses Bharata to become a king and gives his sandals as a symbol that Sri Rama is always at the side Bharata in every step of his tasks as the King of Ayodya. (kmb)

In contrast to the other types of barong, Barong Brutuk does not take the shape of animals, but instead resemble a human being. The appearance of the Barong Brutuk remains very primitive as only the most rustic of materials are used for its attire. Barong Brutuk’ clothes and ornaments are made from kraras (a type of dried banana sheath fiber weaving). Chains of the dry banana leaf are formed to resemble tassels worn around the neck and at the waist. The dry banana leaf fiber used for the Barong Brutuk, are made specifically from banana tress from the area of Pinggan village. The villages of Trunyan and Pinggan have special historical ties. Before seeking out the dry banana leaf, Trunyan vellage heads will write a letter

requesting permission asking Pinggan village if they can come search for the dry banana leaves that will be used for the Brutuk. Meanwhile, the mask for the Barong Brutuk is made from coconut shell. Though its expression remains very primitive, the mask of the Barong Brutuk has its own magical aura. This aura is maintained by storing the mask in the main chamber of the village’s Pancering Jagat Temple. In addition to using dry banana leaf ornaments and a coconut shell mask, the Barong Brutuk dancers also smear their bodies with mud taken from a place named Song Rerindi. Since it is a sacred, the dance is only performed on particular days. Typically, it is presented on the full moon in October at Pancering Jagat Temple. During the

performance, the Barong Brutuk carries a 20 Meter long whip made from hibiscus bark. The Barong Brutuk dancer circles Pancering Jagat Temple, while swinging its whip. Residents who stand neat the temple during this ceremony, will be whipped by the Barong Brutuk. Secretary of Trunyan village, Ketut Jaksa, said that according to local beliefs, the whip holds certain powers. The whip swung by Barong Brutuk is believed to be a pangenteg bayu or energy establisher. This is what makes people want to get close to the Barong, so that they can be exposed to the power of the whip. “According to local belief, whoever is exposed to the whip will be cured from their disease” said Jaksa. Burundi’s 2nd vice president flees amid political tensions BUJUMBURA — Burundi’s second vice president says he has fled the country fearing for his life after opposing the president’s controversial bid for a third term that has sparked off violent protests in the capital in recent weeks. BEIJING — An early morning fire killed 13 people in an apartment building in central China on Thursday, state media said. The fire erupted on the ground level of the seven-story building in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, but did not spread far on a rainy night, China Central Television reported. It said the deaths occurred on the top floor, meaning the victims likely died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Multiple people were hospitalized with burn injuries, the broadcaster said. The Zhengzhou No. 1 People’s Hospital confirmed that four people were under urgent medical treatment for burns. The TV network said the cause of the fire was not known. The difficulty of tracing those who thronged the wards made it harder to find people who needed to be isolated for suspected exposure to the disease, ministry official Kwon Deokcheol said. “This issue has been raised as one of the biggest problems, as we looked at the trend of the MERS outbreak,” Kwon, the ministry’s head of health care policy, told a news briefing. Hospitals are now required to keep a

record of all patients and family members as well as ambulance workers and the time of their visits, the ministry said. On Thursday, the ministry reported two more deaths from the disease, taking the toll to 29, besides reporting one new case. Most of the deaths have been among elderly patients or those already suffering illnesses. There are 77 people still being treated in hospital, the ministry said. The emergency ward at a prestigious Seoul hospital run by the Samsung Group had become an epicentre of the outbreak after a 35-year-old patient waited nearly three days for a bed while nearly 900 patients, their families, and other visitors, as well as hospital staff, went through the ward.

The health ministry has promised to change the practice of patients and their families waiting in emergency rooms for beds to become available. Kwon declined to say if the new measure aimed to discourage patients and their families from visiting emergency wards, but said the ministry was reviewing a more permanent legal approach. On Wednesday, the ministry said the outbreak was at a crossroads, backing off from an earlier assessment that the spread of disease had levelled off. On Thursday officials said they were monitoring more than 2,000 people who had been in another Seoul hospital with a patient who was later confirmed as MERS positive. (rtr)

HANOI — Vietnam’s rubberstamp National Assembly on Thursday approved the construction of a new international airport by 2025 to accommodate growing tourism to the communist-ruled country. The assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution for the planned Long Thanh International Airport to be built just outside the southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City. The government said in a statement that the new airport will relieve the load on Tan Son Nhat airport and will be built with the aim of becoming a regional hub for airlines. The airport will eventually have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo a year and will cost $16 billion. Its first phase will handle 25 million passen-

gers a year and be completed by 2025. The cost will be financed from the state budget and from selling shares in state-owned aviation companies, as well as development aid and other sources, the government said. The capacity of Tan Son Nhat is 18 million passengers a year, and the government says 22 million used the airport last year. Expanding the airport is not considered feasible, although some aviation experts argue that can be done by taking back a golf course which lies adjacent to the airport. The government says once Long Thanh becomes operational, it will handle mostly international flights while Tan Son Nhat will be used for most domestic flights and some international flights. (ap)

INDONESIA Tourism expected to boost economic growth

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is developing its tourism sector in a bid to improve the country’s economy, which is facing a slowdown amid the glooming world economy. While chairing a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office on Wednesday, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the slowdown in the national economy should be countered by an increase in the number of tourist arrivals, so that it can support the nation’s economy. “Even with slow economic growth, the tourism sector can contribute by generating foreign exchange earnings in a relatively short period of time,” the president affirmed. Therefore, Jokowi called for an increase in tourism promotional activities to attract more foreign and domestic tourists. “The president has urged the minister of tourism to maximize the

country’s tourism promotional activities to attract more foreign tourists to Indonesia,” Chief of the Presidential Communications Team Teten Masduki noted. To increase foreign tourist arrivals, Jokowi has issued Presidential Decree No. 69 of 2015 on free visa travel. “Actually, several weeks ago, I had signed a free visa policy for 30 countries. I think it will have a positive impact on the country’s tourism industry,” President Jokowi remarked. So far, the Indonesian government has provided a free visa facility to 15 countries. With the new free visa policy being offered to 30 countries, the number of countries receiving the facility has increased to 45.

Tourism Affairs Minister Arief Yahya stated that the free visa policy has become an important step to help Indonesia achieve its target of tourist arrivals. According to Yahya, the tourism ministry will continue to implement strategic and effective measures to realize the target of foreign tourist arrivals and domestic tourist travels that have been set by the government. The Ministry of Tourism has set a target to receive 10 million foreign tourists in 2015, with the sector’s foreign exchange contribution expected to reach US$12.05 billion, up by about 7-8 percent from that recorded in 2014. Last year’s foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia reached 9.3 million, con-

tributing US$10.69 billion in foreign exchange to the state. Therefore, through the implementation of this policy, the minister is optimistic that Indonesia will attract an additional one million visitors. After all, 9.3 million foreign tourist arrivals were recorded last year, which was relatively smaller as compared to 26 million arrivals in Malaysia and 29 million arrivals in Thailand. The Ministry of Tourism has urged tourism operators to improve their services and human resources, including industries involved in Meeting, Incentives, Conference and Exhibition (MICE) activities. Ash from Mt. Sinabung blankets provincial capital Medan

JAKARTA — Volcanic ash from Indonesia’s smoldering Mount Sinabung has blanketed parts of Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra, forcing residents to wear masks. The head of the local disaster mitigation agency, Subur Tambun, said Wednesday that smoke spewing from the mountain was being carried by winds toward Medan. So far, the ash fall is not seriously disrupting daily life, he said, including flight operations at the city’s airport. Medan with a population of 3.4 million is Indonesia’s third-biggest city after Jakarta and Surabaya. TV footage showed ash blanketing parts of the city which is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the mountain. According to the Sinabung monitoring post, there were seven hot ash avalanches Wednesday that slid up to 3,500 meters (10,500 feet) southeastward. The ash cloud billowed 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) high. The 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) volcano has spewed hot lava almost daily since its alert status was raised early this month to the highest level. More than 10,300 villagers whose homes are in the danger zone have been evacuated since then to safer areas. Mount Sinabung is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc

Indonesia to deport 300 Myanmarese fishermen

AMBON - The Immigration Office of Ambon, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will deport some 300 fishermen to their country of origin, Myanmar. The identification of the immigrants was conducted on June 23 with the cooperation of the Embassy of Myanmar in Indonesia, Head of the Ambon Immigration office Nanang Koesdarjanto stated on Thursday. “The Myanmar embassy’s staff came to Ambon after being contacted by the Myanmarese fishermen who required documents to return to their home country,” he noted. The embassy sent its staff to gather data from the immigrants to prepare their travel documents. When the documents are ready, they will immediately be deported to Myanmar with the assistance of the IOM, the Ambon immigration office chief stated. The immigrants are crew members of ships that are currently docked in Ambon. They want to return to their country, as they are now practically jobless since their ships can no longer sail for fishing after the Indonesian government declared a moratorium on issuing licenses for foreign fishing ships in November 2014. The number of foreign fishermen stranded on several remote eastern Indonesian islands has spiraled to four thousand, according to media reports. Host Chile beats Uruguay to reach Copa America semifinals

SANTIAGO — Chile’s hopes of winning its home Copa America sharply improved with a 1-0 win over defending champion Uruguay on Wednesday. Defender Mauricio Isla scored an 81st-minute winner to lead the hosts to the semifinals of the South American tournament, delighting the home crowd and an entire country. Chile dominated the game from the start and Isla finally broke the deadlock with a low shot from just inside the area after a pass by Jorge Valdivia, advancing his team to the tournament’s semifinals for the first time in 16 years. “This is the most important goal I’ve scored in my life,” said Isla, who is coming off a difficult season with Queens Park Rangers in England. “For being at home, with the national team, for everything.” Chile will play the winner of Thursday’s match between Bolivia and Peru. In the other quarterfinal matchups, Argentina plays Colombia and Brazil faces Paraguay. Uruguay, trying to make it to the semifinals for the sixth-straight time, played a man down from the 63rd after star striker Edinson Cavani was shown his second yellow card of the match for apparently slapping Chile’s Gonzalo Jara away from the ball. Television images later showed that Cavani reacted immediately after Jara provoked him by putting his hand on the Uruguayan’s behind. Cavani’s first yellow was for complaining with the linesman in the 30th. Cavani entered the match enduring a personal ordeal back in Uruguay, where his father was detained after allegedly driving drunk and being involved in an accident that killed a motorcyclist. Uruguay lost another player in the 88th, when defender Jorge Fucile also was sent off for a second yellow.
