Audiard’s ‘Dheepan’ wins Palme d’Or in upset Cannes finale CANNES, France — The 68th Cannes Film Festival was brought to a surprising close Sunday with Jacques Audiard’s Sri Lankan refugee drama taking the festival’s coveted top honor, the Palme d’Or. The choice of “Dheepan,” as selected by a jury led by Joel and Ethan Coen, left some critics scratching their heads.

While the dapper French filmmaker has drawn widespread acclaim for films such as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone,” some critics were disappointed by the thriller climax of Audiard’s film. “Dheepan” is about a trio of Sri Lankans who pretend to be a family in order to flee their war-torn country and are settled in a violent housing project outside Paris. “This isn’t a jury of film critics,” Joel Coen told reporters after the awards ceremony, alongside fellow jurors like Guillermo del Toro and Jake Gyllenhaal. “This is a jury of artists who are looking at the work.” The win for “Dheepan” comes at
a time when Europe is particularly attuned to the experience of immigrants, following the recent deaths of hundreds crossing the Mediterranean, seeking Italian shores. Jury members, though, said “Dheepan” was chosen for its overall strength as a film, rather than any topicality. “We all thought it was a very beautiful movie,” said Ethan Coen, calling the decision “swift.” ‘’Everyone had some high level of excitement and enthusiasm for it.” Audiard, springing to the podium at the Palais des Festivals, accepted the award with warm gratitude, bowing to the jury. He was joined by the makeshift
parents of his film: Kalieaswari Srinivasan and Antonythasan Jesuthasan, who himself was Tamil Tiger child soldier before finding political asylum in France. The runner-up prize, the Grand Prix, went to “Son of Saul,” a grim Holocaust drama by first-time Hungarian director László Nemes. Some expected Nemes’ horrifying plunge into the life of an Auschwitz worker to take the top award, but it’s been 26 years since a debut film (Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, and Videotape”) was given the Palme. English actress Sienna Miller and Canadian actor Xavier Dolan, both jury members, sounded especially moved by “Son of Saul.” Miller called it “breathtaking” and an extraordinary accomplishment for a first-time filmmaker. Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the masterful 68-year-old Taiwanese filmmaker, won best director for his first feature in eight years: “The Assassin,” a lushly painterly martial arts drama. The best actress prize was split but not the way some expected. It was given to both Rooney Mara, half of the romantic pair of Todd Haynes’ ‘50s lesbian drama “Carol,” and Emmanuelle Bercot, the French star of the roller coaster marriage drama “My King.” (Bercot also directed the festival opener, “Standing Tall,” about a delinquent teenager.) Any split was presumed to go to Mara and her “Carol” co-star, Cate Blanchett. Best actor was awarded to Vincent Lindon, the veteran French actor of Stéphane Brizé’s “The Measure of a Man.” He plays a man struggling to make a living after a long period of unemployment. The visibly moved Lindon won over some big-name competition, including Michael Caine, the star of Paolo Sorrentino’s unrewarded “Youth,” a wry, melancholy portrait of old age. (ap)
Entertainment ‘Tomorrow land’ tops North American box office LOS ANGELES - Sci-fi adventure-drama “Tomorrow land” starring George Clooney went straight to the top of the North American box office on its debut weekend, estimates showed Sunday. The Disney movie, which has had mixed reviews, was projected to pull in $40.7 million over the Memorial Day long weekend, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. Directed by Brad Bird, the film tells the story of former boy genius Frank (Clooney) and the precocious Casey (Britt Robertson) in their danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of a mysterious place known only as “Tomorrowland.” The movie relegated musical comedy sequel “Pitch Perfect 2” into second place in the box office standings, expected to rake in $38 million over four days to Monday in the United States and Canada. Starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, it follows the fortunes of the Barden Bellas singing team as they chase international success after being banned from the competitive circuit. Third was the reboot of Australian director George Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise, with $30 million. It is the fourth film of the iconic series and the first since 1985’s “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.” Fourth in the box office was a new entry for horror classic “Poltergeist” ($27.7 million) on its debut weekend in movie theaters. The new, 3D take on the 1982 hit tells the disturbing story of a family whose home is haunted by evil forces that abduct their youngest daughter. The movie just sneaked in ahead of superhero blockbuster “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which was shunted down to fifth spot with $26.8 million for a total haul of $410 million since release. (afp)

DENPASAR - As a way to encourage novice entrepreneurs in Bali to continue developing their businesses and absorb more labour, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the RI has prepared capital worth IDR 7 billion for distribution in 2015. In addition, training and mentoring for novice entrepreneurs will also be provided so that they can take their businesses to the next level. Division Head of the Entrepreneurial Mentoring and Deputy Assistant of Enterprise Affairs and Human Resources Development, for the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the RI, Indriana, announced the good news during an entrepreneurship training session for novices on Sunday (May 24). The training session that is being held over three days from May 22 until 25 is the result of cooperation
between the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises, The Bali Cooperatives and SMEs Agency, Bali TV and Bank Mandiri. Indriana stated that the training session is aimed at improving the management skills of novice humans resources in SME’s. The main priority of the training program is to attempt to upgrade the class of business that these novice entrepreneurs are running, once they have the tools that
they gain though this training. “They are also learning to create business development plans,” said Indriana. After assessing the post-training presentations of these entrepreneurs, the amount of capital required to help develop their businesses can be assessed. At a later date, these entrepreneurs will also be given support and capital if need be for further business development. With a combination of training and financial assistance, it is expected that these businesses will grow considerably. “The most important thing is that these businesses are able to grow which in turn will provide jobs. Currently these businesses are self run but naturally with a little growth, these entrepreneurs will begin to
hire friends and relatives,” added Indriana. For Bali, the target is very much the development of novice entrepreneurs. In addition to providing training, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises is also cooperating with the Bali Cooperatives and SMEs Agency to undertake similar activities. “The Ministry will be providing funds for the Provincial Cooperative Agency for the same kind of training with more focus on vocational skills,” said Indriana. The Bali Cooperative Agency will therefor be providing support and assistance for entrepreneurs in the form of training and capital. Hopefully, after following the training sessions, these entrepreneurs
will be able to run their business well, expand and provide job opportunities as well as share what they have learned with their colleagues. “The Ministry of Co-ops and SME’s aims to develop the skills of 1 million entrepreneurs in five years. We will not be working alone, but in collaboration with ten ministerial institutions, agencies and professional institutions,” Indriana concluded. BANGLI - Though known as an area with many natural springs, hundreds of families in Alengkong, Songan B, Kintamani do not have access to clean drinking water. To meet their daily needs, the people living in this hamlet are forced to consume rainwater that they have caught and as well as water from Lake Batur that they store in their wells. Sometimes the water they consume is mossy and dirty. One local residents, Jero Erna, for instance admitted that she and her family consume stored rain water everyday. They collect rainwater and fetch water from Lake Batur. This water is not only used for their cattle and for bathing but for their own consumption as well, without so much as being boiled. “I have gotten used to drinking it so I don’t get sick,” she explained. Local residents of Alengkong hamlet are forced to drink unclean water because they have yet to be served by the municipal waterworks (PDAM) or other sources of clean water. Hamlet chief of Alengkong, Nengah Mandiyasa recognises the shortage of
clean water that local residents face and said that all 210 of families of Alengkong rely on rain and lake water to meet their daily needs. According to Mandiyasa, the community of Alengkong actually never faces water shortages per se, because during rainy season they catch rainwater, while in dry season they collect lake water that is stored in a reservoir. In fact the real problem that the residents of Alengkong face, is that there is no pipeline from the reservoir to people’s houses so the water ends up getting dirty from stagnating and then becomes discolored and filled with moss. Mandiyasa therfore hopes that the government can help with the installation of a pipeline connecting the reservoir directly to people’s homes. Hopefully, local people will no longer need to store water in their wells. “Despite consuming this water every day -fortunately, our residents have never complained about getting sick from it,” said Mandiyasa. SINGARAJA - Though the problem of plastic rice being distributed to the public has not made its way to Buleleng, the government is nonetheless being vigilant. The regency of Buleleng has instructed the Buleleng Cooperative, Trade and Industry Agency to oversee the rice supplies coming to Bulelelng from Java. Buleleng still relies on rice supplied from Central Java and East Java to meet their demands. Head of the Buleleng Cooperative, Trade and Industry Agency, Ni Made Arnika, when contacted on Sunday (May 24) confirmed that such vigilance is being enforced. Following the discovery of the circulation of plastic rice in Java recently, Arnika wants to make sure that no platic rice is found circulating in Buleleleng. She added that a lot of Javanese rice is brought into Buleleng because in some seasons local farmers are not able to supply local demands. Rice is brought into to Buleleng from Central and East Java, every two weeks with 2 and 3 tons orders from each distributor in North Bali. Most of the orders are for premium class rice which has recently been in high demand by consumers in Bali. “Local Balinese rice produced by our farmers cannot be mixed with synthetic rice. So the focus of our small team is on rice coming in from Java,” she said. To prevent the plastic rice from entering Buleleng,
her agency has deployed a small team to closely monitor the supply of rice from Java though distributors in Buleleng. “The supply from Java cannot just be cut off, because Javanese rice is much sought after by Balinese consumers, especially in North Bali where there are sometimes shortages of local rice,” she said. Other than tightening the supervision of Javanese rice distribution, the Buleleng Cooperative, Trade and Industry Agency has been supervising the sale of rice by retailers at traditional markets in Buleleng. Based on such supervision, Buleleng has been declared to be plastic rice free. Nevertheless, the issue of plastic rice is quite disturbing to people in North Bali. Many of whom are concerned that they might have already consumed synthetic rice. Many rice merchants have even said that their sales have gone down due to such fears, whereas demands are only slightly less than before the scare. (kmb38)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Scientists link dolphin deaths in Gulf to 2010 BP spill
NEW ORLEANS — In a new study, a team of scientists says there’s a definite link between the massive BP oil spill in 2010 and a record number of dolphin deaths along the northern Gulf of Mexico. The scientists on Wednesday said large numbers of dead bottlenose dolphins found along shores since the spill suffered from lung and adrenal lesions caused by swimming in oilcontaminated seas. The research paper backs up previous findings linking dolphin deaths to the oil spill. The study involved federal scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. BP has rejected the contention linking the deaths to the oil spill. Instead, it said, the dolphins were likely suffering from common respiratory illnesses. The new study was published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed online journal PLOS ONE. With the release of the study, researchers and federal government made the most direct link yet between the spill and the dolphin deaths. “No feasible alternative causes remain that can reasonably explain the timing, location and nature of these distinct lesions and increase in deaths,” said Stephanie Venn-Watson, the study’s lead researcher with National
Marine Mammal Foundation. From 2002 to 2009, the Gulf averaged 63 dolphin deaths a year. That rose to 125 in the seven months after the spill in 2010 and 335 in all of 2011, averaging more than 200 a year since April 2010. That’s the longest and largest dolphin die-off ever recorded in the Gulf. The number of deaths has started to decline, according to federal scientists. Researchers said oil contamination caused chronic adrenal problems for dolphins and this in turn hurt their chances of surviving cold temperatures, infections and bacterial pneumonia. Also, the dolphins suffering from oil contamination had problems with pregnancy. Venn-Watson said dolphins were vulnerable to oil contamination because they take deep breaths at the sea’s surface — the same place where oil sheens covered the Gulf following the spill. “Dolphins were swimming into the oil,” she said. “Their lungs are large, they take big deep breaths at the water’s surface and hold it for extended
periods of time.” The study looked at 46 dead dolphins found in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama between June 2010 and December 2012. Researchers tested lung and adrenal gland tissues. The study looked at 22 dead dolphins found in Barataria Bay, a heavily oiled water body south of New Orleans where researchers first began noticing and tracking dolphin deaths after the spill. Venn-Watson said further studies would be needed to track and monitor the long-term effects of the contamination on the dolphin populations. BP questioned the validity of the study because it was based on what it termed “just a small sample set” of dolphins. The company accused the federal government of not releasing in a timely manner hundreds of necropsies. “This new paper fails to show that the illnesses observed in some dolphins were caused by exposure to Macondo oil,” said Geoff Morrell, a BP spokesman. WASHINGTON - Man’s best friend may have been his companion for far longer than believed, scientists reported, publishing an analysis that dates domesticated dogs to over 27,000 years ago. Humans possibly domesticated dogs 27,000 to 40,000 years ago, according to Swedish researchers whose work was published Thursday in the journal Current Biology. The scientists based their analysis on an ancient Siberian jaw fragment. Previous estimates said modern dogs diverged from their wolf ancestors 16,000 years ago after the last ice age. The “Taimyr” wolf bone in the study, dated to 35,000 years ago, shows that the animal was the most recent ancestor of wolves and modern dogs. “Dogs may have been domesticated much earlier than is generally believed,” said Love Dalen from the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Dalen said the only other explanation for the unusual bone was the less likely possibility that a major divergence between wolf populations took place at that time that gave birth to modern wolves while the wolf population became extinct. The Taimyr wolf lived a few thousand years after Neanderthals disappeared and modern humans spread throughout Asia and Europe, the study said. DNA analysis also showed modern Siberian Huskies and Greenland sled dogs have an “unusually large” number of gene in common with the Taimyr wolf. (afp)
Future for warming US: More extreme heat
WASHINGTON — The combination of global warming and shifting population means that by mid-century, there will be a huge increase in the number of Americans sweating through days that are extremely hot, a new study says. People are migrating into areas — especially in the Southeast — where the heat is likely to increase more, said the authors of a study published Monday by the journal Nature Climate Change. The study highlighted the Houston-Dallas-San Antonio and Atlanta-CharlotteRaleigh corridors as the places where the double whammy looks to be the biggest. “It’s not just the climate that is changing in the future,” said study co-author Linda Mearns, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. “It is many things: how many people and where people are that affects their exposure to climate changes.” In a unique study looking at the interplay of projected changes in climate and population, scientists tried to characterize the number of people who will feel temperatures of 95 degrees (35 Celsius) or higher and how often they will feel it. They used a figure called person days for the extreme heat to reflect both the length of time heat waves continued and how many people felt it by multiplying people affected by how many days they felt the heat. Between 1970 and 2000, the U.S. averaged about 2.3 billion person days of extreme heat each year. But between 2040 and 2070 that number will be between 10 and 14 billion person days a year, according to the study. The scientists used 11 different climate models based on current trends of heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions and matched those with demographic trends. Both the increased heat and population shifts had about equal effects but together they made matters even worse, said lead author Bryan Jones, a population geographer at the City University of New York. The question is, will be people adapt by changing their lifestyle, such as staying indoors and using more air conditioning, or will they move to cooler climates. Jones said it is unlikely that people will move to cooler areas to escape the heat, saying historically people tend to move away from colder areas and into warmer areas like Florida, Arizona and North Carolina. Several outside scientists praised the study. University of Georgia meteorology professor Marshall Shepherd said the problem is likely even worse when you take into consideration the fact that cities get hotter than rural areas. (ap)

A restaurant and villa allegedly in violation GIANYAR - The coastal areas of Gianyar have become the target of investors wishing to establish tourist accommodations. Unfortunately, many tourism facilities such as villas and restaurant have not followed the rules of the the official spatial plan which dictate that buildings must be built at least a 100 meters from the shore. One of the restaurant that is established on the shoreline of Keramas, Blahbatuh, is additionally alleged to not have a permit. Tourist accommodations that perch on the edge of Keramas Beach, Blahbatuh, can be reached by taking Jalan Bypass I.B. Mantra to the Jalan Pantai Keramas. There is a restaurant on the beach and next to it several villas are under construction. I have just now heard about the restaurant and villa located close to shoreline of Keramas -I have never issued any permit for a restaurant at that location (Keramas Beach—Ed),” he said. After being informed, Darmajati promised to look into the situation and to coordinate with the Gianyar Municipal Police in order to discipline those in violation. “To my recollection, I have indeed never issued any permits for buildings at that location. I will forward this information to the municipal police so that they can take decisive action,” he said. Tabanan now has a museum of ceramic art TABANAN - Pejaten village is not only famous for manufacturing earthenware but they have also developed ceramic craft products, which could very well be highlighted as a tourist attraction. Pejaten village is in fact well on its way to becoming a tourism village. To achieve this objective, the village has built a museum of ceramic art with a collection of hundreds of artificial ceramic items made by local artisans as well as heritage ceramics from the nineteenth century. It is expected to become a tourist destinations for travelers visiting Pejaten village.
According to the Operations Manager of the Museum, I Putu Oka Mahendra, the museum of ceramic art has hundreds of pieces in its collection that has been amassed since 2011. The museum also shows the historical development of ceramics in Pejaten village. Mahendra explained that initially the development of ceramics at Pejaten village began with the manufacture of pottery and roof tiles used in bartering for agricultural commodities with other regions because Pejaten village was arid and barren. “In the 1960s the manufacture of pottery here still used traditional techniques. Then, in 1980 there was assistance from the Dutch government in teaching new manufacturing techniques that allowed the craft to evolve,” said Mahendra. He explained that after learning from the Dutch government 15 different groups of craftsmen at Pejaten village began to produce
ceramics with a layer of glass or glaze. The development of ceramics at Pejaten is divided into several decades starting in the 1960s. Each period shows differences in forms, motifs, and levels of difficulty in the creation process. Aside from collecting contemporary ceramic from Tabanan, the museum also has a collection of ceramic tiles estimated to be more than a thousand years old and originate from northern Thailand, specifically, 9th century Sawankhalok “We obtained this collection from fishermen on the coast of West Java. The ceramics no longer have their glaze as they were buried in the sand for so long,” said Oka. He also explained that a team from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar investigated and found that the ceramics that were found on the coast of West Java in fact have the characteristic traits of ceramics from Sawankhalok. NEGARA - Three puppies smuggled were secured by the ranks of Jembrana Police when making a highway operation on Jalan Sudirman, Denpasar-Gilimanuk, Saturday night (May 23). Aside from contraband animals, the operation led by the Deputy Chief of Jembrana Police, Anak Agung Rai Laba, also found a car without vehicle registration and toy gun. The operation held before the dawn was actually targeting drugs in anticipating the entry of drugs smuggled to Bali through land line. But from the operation involving at least 70 police officers from the Jembrana Police and Negara Police found 20 traffic violations. Of the many trucks inspected, the officers found a truck with destination to Flores transporting three puppies without official documents. From the description of the driver, Benyamin Bato, 43, from Flores, the truck with license plate L 9837 UP delivered puppies from Surabaya to Flores with a cost of IDR 1 million.
Recipient of the puppy delivery is on behalf of Fiki with the address at Trikora village, Bajawa subdistrict, Ngada, East Nusa Tenggara. Since having no document from the Agricultural Quarantine, the three puppies belonging to Hasky type were secured by police. The puppies placed in small cage were estimated to be two months old. “We have also secured a unit of Mercedes with license plate L 1207 DW without registration document and a toy pistol,” said Deputy Chief of Jembrana Police to reporters. The sedan without vehicle registration document brought a land pass, but it is only valid in the area of East Java. According to him, it poses a regular operation to maintain the security of Bali including the anticipation against drug trafficking. Nash had read the classic “Men of Mathematics” by E.T. Bell by the time he was in high school. He planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and studied for three years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh — now Carnegie Mellon University — but instead followed his passion for math. He then went to Princeton, where he worked on his equilibrium theory and, in 1950, received his doctorate with a dissertation on non-cooperative games. The thesis contained the definition and properties of what would later be called the Nash equilibrium. But it was while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959, when his wife, Alicia, was pregnant with their son, that schizophrenia began to emerge, a yearslong fight that was chronicled in the Academy Award-winning blockbuster “A Beautiful Mind.” The Nashes died in a car accident late Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike. He was 86; she was 82. “John’s remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory, and the story of his life with Alicia moved millions of readers and moviegoers who marveled at their courage in the face of daunting challenges,” Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement.
In an autobiography written for The Nobel Foundation website, Nash said delusions caused him to resign as a faculty member at MIT. He also spent several months in New Jersey hospitals on an involuntary basis. However, Nash’s schizophrenia diminished through the 1970s and 1980s as he “gradually began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking,” he wrote. 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind” was based on an unauthorized biography by Sylvia Nasar, who wrote that Nash’s contemporaries found him “immensely strange” and “slightly cold, a bit superior, somewhat secretive.” Much of his demeanor likely stemmed from mental illness. “A Beautiful Mind” won four Academy Awards, including best picture and best director, and generated interest in John Nash’s life story. Russell Crowe, who was nominated for best actor for playing Nash, tweeted that he was “stunned” by news of the couple’s death. “An amazing partnership,” he wrote. “Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts.” Jennifer Connelly, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Alicia Nash, called the couple “an inspiration,” and the film’s director, Ron Howard, tweeted that “it was an honor telling part of their story.” The Nashes split in 1963 then resumed living together several years later and finally remarried in 2001.

DUBLIN — First Minister Peter Robinson, the Protestant leader of Northern Ireland’s unity government, has been hospitalized after a suspected heart attack, his party said Monday. The 66-yearold leader of the Democratic Unionist Party was taken by ambulance to the Ulster Hospital east of Belfast near his home, then transferred to the cardiac specialist unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Catholic west Belfast. The Royal Victoria Hospital said in a statement that Robinson “underwent a procedure this morning and is currently recovering.” It declined to elaborate. The Democratic Unionist Party, which represents the British territory’s Protestant majority, asked media not to contact Robinson’s
family. Robinson has led Northern Ireland’s five-party government since 2008. Long a fierce critic of the outlawed Irish Republican Army and its allied Sinn Fein party, Robinson has defied expectations and worked with Irish Catholic colleagues — particularly former IRA commander Martin McGuinness, the Sinn Fein official who is co-leader of the government. Deputy First Minister McGuinness said in a tweet he was concerned about Robinson’s hospitalization. “My thoughts and prayers are with him, (wife) Iris and family,” he wrote. APEC trade chiefs vow to speed up work in WTO
MANILA — Trade ministers from 21 Asia-Pacific countries on Sunday issued strong support to the World Trade Organization’s efforts to boost global trade amid a flurry of regional free trade agreements. The ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation grouping of nations vowed at the end of their two-day meeting on the central Philippine resort island of Boracay to ratify by December a landmark trade facilitation deal and to contribute to a work program to conclude the much-delayed Doha round of trade negotiations. They reaffirmed in a separate document from their annual joint statement “the centrality and primacy of the multilateral trading system under the auspices of the WTO” in promoting trade and economic growth. They also promised to exercise restraint in implementing measures consistent with WTO provisions but which have a significant protectionist effect, “and to promptly rectify such measures, where they are implemented.” At the same time, the ministers’ joint statement welcomed progress on a collective study on opportunities and challenges ahead of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific. They instructed officials to report updates on it by November and to have a final report by next year’s ministerial meeting. APEC leaders agreed in Beijing in November to accelerate efforts to create the FTAAP “as early as possible” and endorsed a road map to its creation. The FTAAP goal is being pursued as talks for the TransPacific Partnership free trade initiative of 12 countries — including the United States, Japan and Australia, but excluding China — have been delayed by legislative debate in the U.S. over President Barack Obama’s controversial “fast-track” trade bill to complete the TPP deal. The bill was finally passed the by U.S. Senate on Friday, but it is expected to face a tougher time in the House, which resumes sessions on June 1. U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman told a news conference in Boracay that ministers from TPP member countries took the opportunity to meet over breakfast Sunday to review the status of the negotiations and talk about the work program going forward. “Our negotiators are working as we speak and working through issues,” he said. “We hope to conclude it soon; we’re very much in the end game.” But he declined to specify a timetable. A ministerial meeting originally scheduled for this week has been delayed after other members preferred to wait until after the U.S. House of Representatives also gives Obama authority to complete trade deals that Congress could approve or reject, but not change. “We reaffirm our shared vision that regional economic integration should not create unnecessary barriers between economies and lead to fragmentation of trade and investment flows,” APEC ministers said in their statement. They are also endorsing to their leaders a raft of measures bolstering micro enterprises’ ability to take part in global trade. Small companies comprise 97 percent of businesses in APEC countries, and contribute significantly to employment and poverty alleviation. The action plan includes streamlining rules of origin requirements, promoting greater use of information technology, cutting customs red tape, assisting micro enterprises in meeting requirements and widening their options for financing. Japan trade account returns to deficit in April TOKYO - Japan swung back to a trade deficit in April after the first surplus in almost three years in March, but the shortfall shrank drastically year-on-year thanks to stronger exports and lower energy bills, official data showed Monday. The monthly deficit came in at 53.4 billion yen ($440 million), about one-15th of the 825.5 billion yen posted a year earlier, finance ministry data showed. Exports rose 8.0 percent year-onyear chiefly on robust shipments of cars, electronics components and machinery as the yen was 17 percent cheaper against the dollar than last year. Imports dropped 4.2 percent as the cost of oil and gas fell. By region, US-bound shipments soared 21.4 percent, far outpacing a 2.4 percent increase in exports to China and a 0.8 percent rise in exports to the European Union. “Japan’s economy will be more robust this year, led by domestic consumption and external demand,” said Yoshitaka Suda, an economist at Nomura Holdings.
“We think that the US economy will continue to recover moderately, helping to boost Japan’s exports,” he told Bloomberg News. The April data came after a stronger-than-expected economic growth report last week. Data from the Cabinet Office showed Japan’s economy grew a faster-than-expected 0.6 percent onquarter in the first three months of 2015 as it crawls back from a brief recession. The Bank of Japan on Friday held off launching more stimulus and governor Haruhiko Koroda said the world’s number-three economy was on the upswing after taking a hit from a sales tax hike in April last year. Since taking office in late 2012, Japan’s prime minister has embarked on a high-profile policy blitz -- including big government spending and huge
central bank monetary easing -- in a bid to end years of deflation and lacklustre growth. The April deficit was much smaller than market expectations for a deficit of more than 300 billion yen although it reversed March’s 227.4 billion yen in surplus, which was the first blackink since June 2012. Capital Economics expects Japan’s balance to remain in the red in the near term. “If the exchange rate starts to weaken again in the second half of the year as we expect, crude oil imports will become more expensive again, soon,” said Marcel Thieliant, Japan economist at Capital Economics. “Overall, therefore, the trade balance will likely remain in the red in coming months.” he said in a note. Economists at SMBC Nikko Securities said “the trade balance will be likely to move around the break-even point for a while” due to stalling export growth, a pick-up in imports, and an upturn in oil prices. Malaysia: Human traffickers’ camps had 139 suspected graves WANG KELIAN, Malaysia — Malaysian authorities said Monday a cluster of abandoned jungle camps used by human traffickers contained 139 suspected graves as well as barbed-wire pens likely used to cage migrants, shedding more light on a regional trade that preyed on some of Southeast Asia’s most desperate people. National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said forensics experts were exhuming the suspected graves found at 28 vacated camps in the hilly jungle area on the border with Thailand where trafficking syndicates were known to operate. “It is a very sad scene,” Khalid told reporters at a police outpost in the town of Wang Kelian several kilometers (miles) from the camps, one of which appeared large enough to hold about 300 people. “I am shocked. We never expected this kind of cruelty.” At one forest camp, police found several parts of a decomposed body inside a wooden pen. The parts were placed into white bags and brought to Wang Kelian, and district police chief Rizani Ismail said they would be examined by forensics experts. Police said they would begin digging up other suspected graves — mounds of earth, covered with leaves and marked by sticks — on Tuesday. “We have discovered 139 of what we believe to be graves,” Khalid said. “We believe they are victims of human trafficking.” Prime Minister Najib Razak, in Tokyo on an official visit, vowed to find the perpetrators. “I am deeply concerned with graves found on Malaysian soil purportedly connected to people smuggling. We will find those responsible,” he said on Twitter early Monday. The finding in the northern Malay-
sian state of Perlis follows a similar discovery earlier this month by police in Thailand who unearthed dozens of bodies from shallow graves on the Thai side of the border. Thai police Maj. Gen. Puthichart Ekkachan said 36 bodies had been found there in seven abandoned camps. The discoveries have exposed hidden networks of jungle camps run by human smugglers, who have for years held countless desperate people captive while extorting ransoms from their families. Most of those who have fallen victim to the trafficking networks are members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya Muslim community or impoverished migrants from Bangladesh, part of a wave of people who have fled their homelands to reach countries like Malaysia, where they hope to find work or live freely. As Southeast Asian governments have launched crackdowns in recent weeks amid intensified international pressure and media scrutiny, traffickers have abandoned camps on land and boats at sea to avoid arrest. Khalid said at least two of the camps found in Malaysia appeared to have been abandoned within the past few weeks, based on the condition of items left behind such as vegetables, rice and almost new cooking utensils. Scattered personal possessions included a pink teddy bear and white children’s sandals, he said, indicating
the possible presence of children at the camp. On three large whiteboards, police pasted dozens of pictures taken at the camps, which ranged in size, with the largest capable of holding about 300 people and smaller ones just a few dozen. Some of the pictures showed large, crudely built pens made from wooden sticks and barbed wire that were believed to be used as cages. “We think the migrants were imprisoned in these wooden pens,” Khalid said. “They were not allowed to move freely and traffickers kept watch at sentry posts.” Other items left behind included a rifle pouch, used bullets and bullet casings, he said. Police also found white muslin cloth, used by Muslims in Malaysia to wrap dead bodies, and a wooden stretcher believed to have carried bodies. The findings were the result of an operation Malaysian authorities conducted from May 11-23, during which they combed the steep jungle area along 50 kilometers (30 miles) of the border with Thailand. Due to the difficult terrain, Khalid said the investigation and forensics analysis could take a few weeks. Human rights groups and activists say the area on the Thai-Malaysia border has been used for years to smuggle migrants and refugees, including Rohingya Muslims, a long-persecuted minority in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar. Female peace activists say Korean DMZ walk is still on PYONGYANG — A group of female activists, including Gloria Steinem and two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, said Friday they will go ahead with their plan to walk across the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas despite reluctance by officials to guarantee their safety and criticism they are being used as propaganda tools by North Korea’s government. The rare crossing of the DMZ is to take place Sunday. The group of 30 women from 15 countries will not go through the symbolic truce village of Panmunjom, where the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953, because officials in South Korea and the United Nations Command responsible for security in the area said they could not guarantee the group’s safety. Instead, the women will take a route that links the two Koreas to the Kaesong industrial complex, a joint NorthSouth business venture near the border. Despite the last-minute change, members of the group said they feel the crossing in itself is a breakthrough. “We bought one-way tickets for Pyongyang not even knowing whether we would need to fly back to Beijing,” said Leymah Gbowee, a Nobel laureate from Liberia. “Not only have we received the blessing for our historic crossing, we’ve gotten both Korean governments to communicate. That is a success.”
North and South Korea have technically been in a state of conflict since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. Their border along the DMZ is one of the most heavily fortified in the world. There is little direct contact between the two Koreas and, with few exceptions, it is considered a crime for citizens of either country to cross the DMZ. The plan to walk across the DMZ, which organizers say is intended to start a dialogue and bring international attention to the need for a formal end to the Korean War and the peninsula’s division, has been controversial. It has also been looked at very differently in the North and South. On Thursday, North Korean state media reported on a peace symposium held by the women in Pyongyang with representatives of North Korean women’s groups, saying they branded the U.S. “a kingdom of terrorism and a kingpin of human rights abuses” — words none of the international group’s speakers used, though many did criticize U.S. military policies around the world. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, meanwhile, picking up on the North Korean reports, quoted academics in the South as saying the group’s activities would not help efforts to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program or improve its human rights record. TUNIS, Tunisia — A Tunisian soldier opened fire on fellow troops at a military barracks in an unusual attack in the capital Monday, and the state news agency said the gunman and three others were killed. Citing medical officials, news agency TAP said 15 people were also wounded in the attack. It wasn’t immediately clear what motivated the soldier. Police reinforcements were sent to the area after the shooting and were combing nearby streets, and a helicopter circled overhead. The Defense Ministry said a nearby school was also evacuated. Authorities sought to calm the public in a city where tensions remain high after an attack on the National Bardo Museum on March 18 that killed 22 people, mostly foreign tourists. The
shooting at the Bouchoucha barracks was about a kilometer from the museum. Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said Monday’s incident is not being viewed as a terrorist attack. Speaking on national radio, he said shots were fired only inside the barracks, suggesting it was an internal dispute. Defense Ministry spokesman Belhassen Oueslati said the situation was under control by mid-morning. Oueslati said the soldier had been forbidden from carrying a weapon, and seized another man’s weapon for the attack. He didn’t elaborate. Since overthrowing its secular dictator in in 2011, Tunisia has been battling militant groups with links to the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, which have carried out attacks on security forces. JAKARTA - The Corrutpion Eradication Commission has summoned a Pertamina commissioner Sahala Lumbangaol, who is also an expert staff of the state energy company to testify in a big graft case over the imports of tetra ethyl lead (TEL). The case, known as Innospec case, was over the imports of TEL by Pertamina in 2004-2005 from Britain with Innospec supplying. “Sahala Lumbangaol is summoned as witness in the case with SAM (Suroso Atmomartoyo) as the suspect,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said on Monday. Suroso was formerly processing director of PT Pertamina charged with accepting US$190,000 in bribery from the director of PT Sugih Interjaya (SI), Willy Sebastian Liem to approve Innospec through PT SI as a supplier of Tetraethyl Lead (TEL) for oil refineries of PT Pertamina from December 2004 to 2005. Willy also paid the travel cost of Suroso Atmomartoyo to London and Innospec official David P Turner including for accommodation at May Fair Radisson Ewardian Hotel 23-26 April in 2005 worth 749.66 pounds and at a Manchester Hotel on 27 April 2005 at 149.5 pounds. PT SI was named by The Associated Octel Company Limited (OCTEL) or Innospec to become sole agent for TEL sales in Indo-
nesia in 1982. However, the Indonesian government launched what was called blue sky program banning the use of TEL in gasoline and diesel oil as from Dec. 31 in 2004. Willy reported the program and plan to delay the process of implementing the regulation under a joint decision of the energy ands mineral resources minister, the state minister for the environment and the finance minister. Innospec then agreed to bribe Suroso, who had the authority to sign the purchase of TEL by PT Pertamina and approve the price of TEL before the president of PT Pertamina gave the final approval. On memorandum from Suroso the board of directors of PT Pertamina approved the TEL procurement for Pertamina’a refineries to be handled by PT SI. The bribery of US$190,000 for Suroso was transferred to his account at Bank UOB Singapore by phases from January 2004 to September 2005. The case was a follow-up of the Oil for Food Investigation by the US and British governments. The case against Suroso and Willy followed the arrest and conviction of four directors of Innospec by British court. The investigations of the convicts led to KPK arresting Suroso and Willy on 24 February 2015. (ant)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Cristian Gomez, a player with Argentine club Atletico Parana, died on Sunday after collapsing during a second-division match. The Argentine Football Association match supervisor for the game, Ramon Gomez, said the 27-year-old defender collapsed on the field in the first half of the match against Boca Unidos. The official said the player was taken to General San Martin hospital in the city of Corrientes, where doctors were unable to revive him. The cause of death was not
immediately known. Alfredo Schweitzer, the president of Boca Unidos, confirmed the death but offered no details. “We are awaiting the medical report,” he said. Boca Unidos player Jose Vizcarra said Gomez seemed to die almost instantly. “When they took him off the field, it seemed he had already died,” Vizcarra said. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Cristian Gomez, a player with Argentine club Atletico Parana, died on Sunday after collapsing during a second-division match. The Argentine Football Association match supervisor for the game, Ramon Gomez, said the 27-year-old defender collapsed on the field in the first half of the match against Boca Unidos. The official said the player was taken to General San Martin hospital in the city of Corrientes, where doctors were unable to revive him. The cause of death was not

Malaysia: Human traffickers’ camps had 139 suspected graves WANG KELIAN, Malaysia — Malaysian authorities said Monday a cluster of abandoned jungle camps used by human traffickers contained 139 suspected graves as well as barbed-wire pens likely used to cage migrants, shedding more light on a regional trade that preyed on some of Southeast Asia’s most desperate people. National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said forensics experts were exhuming the suspected graves found at 28 vacated camps in the hilly jungle area on the border with Thailand where trafficking syndicates were known to operate. “It is a very sad scene,” Khalid told reporters at a police outpost in the town of Wang Kelian several kilometers (miles) from the camps, one of which appeared large enough to hold about 300 people. “I am shocked. We never expected this kind of cruelty.” At one forest camp, police found several parts of a decomposed body inside a wooden pen. The parts were placed into white bags and brought to Wang Kelian, and district police chief Rizani Ismail said they would be examined by forensics experts. Police said they would begin digging up other suspected graves — mounds of earth, covered with leaves and marked by sticks — on Tuesday. “We have discovered 139 of what we believe to be graves,” Khalid said. “We believe they are victims of human trafficking.” Prime Minister Najib Razak, in Tokyo on an official visit, vowed to find the perpetrators. “I am deeply concerned with graves found on Malaysian soil purportedly connected to people smuggling. We will find those responsible,” he said on Twitter early Monday. The finding in the northern Malay-
sian state of Perlis follows a similar discovery earlier this month by police in Thailand who unearthed dozens of bodies from shallow graves on the Thai side of the border. Thai police Maj. Gen. Puthichart Ekkachan said 36 bodies had been found there in seven abandoned camps. The discoveries have exposed hidden networks of jungle camps run by human smugglers, who have for years held countless desperate people captive while extorting ransoms from their families. Most of those who have fallen victim to the trafficking networks are members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya Muslim community or impoverished migrants from Bangladesh, part of a wave of people who have fled their homelands to reach countries like Malaysia, where they hope to find work or live freely. As Southeast Asian governments have launched crackdowns in recent weeks amid intensified international pressure and media scrutiny, traffickers have abandoned camps on land and boats at sea to avoid arrest. Khalid said at least two of the camps found in Malaysia appeared to have been abandoned within the past few weeks, based on the condition of items left behind such as vegetables, rice and almost new cooking utensils. Scattered personal possessions included a pink teddy bear and white children’s sandals, he said, indicating
the possible presence of children at the camp. On three large whiteboards, police pasted dozens of pictures taken at the camps, which ranged in size, with the largest capable of holding about 300 people and smaller ones just a few dozen. Some of the pictures showed large, crudely built pens made from wooden sticks and barbed wire that were believed to be used as cages. “We think the migrants were imprisoned in these wooden pens,” Khalid said. “They were not allowed to move freely and traffickers kept watch at sentry posts.” Other items left behind included a rifle pouch, used bullets and bullet casings, he said. Police also found white muslin cloth, used by Muslims in Malaysia to wrap dead bodies, and a wooden stretcher believed to have carried bodies. The findings were the result of an operation Malaysian authorities conducted from May 11-23, during which they combed the steep jungle area along 50 kilometers (30 miles) of the border with Thailand. Due to the difficult terrain, Khalid said the investigation and forensics analysis could take a few weeks. Human rights groups and activists say the area on the Thai-Malaysia border has been used for years to smuggle migrants and refugees, including Rohingya Muslims, a long-persecuted minority in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar. Female peace activists say Korean DMZ walk is still on PYONGYANG — A group of female activists, including Gloria Steinem and two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, said Friday they will go ahead with their plan to walk across the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas despite reluctance by officials to guarantee their safety and criticism they are being used as propaganda tools by North Korea’s government. The rare crossing of the DMZ is to take place Sunday. The group of 30 women from 15 countries will not go through the symbolic truce village of Panmunjom, where the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953, because officials in South Korea and the United Nations Command responsible for security in the area said they could not guarantee the group’s safety. Instead, the women will take a route that links the two Koreas to the Kaesong industrial complex, a joint NorthSouth business venture near the border. Despite the last-minute change, members of the group said they feel the crossing in itself is a breakthrough. “We bought one-way tickets for Pyongyang not even knowing whether we would need to fly back to Beijing,” said Leymah Gbowee, a Nobel laureate from Liberia. “Not only have we received the blessing for our historic crossing, we’ve gotten both Korean governments to communicate. That is a success.”
North and South Korea have technically been in a state of conflict since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. Their border along the DMZ is one of the most heavily fortified in the world. There is little direct contact between the two Koreas and, with few exceptions, it is considered a crime for citizens of either country to cross the DMZ. The plan to walk across the DMZ, which organizers say is intended to start a dialogue and bring international attention to the need for a formal end to the Korean War and the peninsula’s division, has been controversial. It has also been looked at very differently in the North and South. TUNIS, Tunisia — A Tunisian soldier opened fire on fellow troops at a military barracks in an unusual attack in the capital Monday, and the state news agency said the gunman and three others were killed. Citing medical officials, news agency TAP said 15 people were also wounded in the attack. It wasn’t immediately clear what motivated the soldier. Police reinforcements were sent to the area after the shooting and were combing nearby streets, and a helicopter circled overhead. The Defense Ministry said a nearby school was also evacuated. Authorities sought to calm the public in a city where tensions remain high after an attack on the National Bardo Museum on March 18 that killed 22 people, mostly foreign tourists. The
shooting at the Bouchoucha barracks was about a kilometer from the museum. Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said Monday’s incident is not being viewed as a terrorist attack. Speaking on national radio, he said shots were fired only inside the barracks, suggesting it was an internal dispute. Defense Ministry spokesman Belhassen Oueslati said the situation was under control by mid-morning. Oueslati said the soldier had been forbidden from carrying a weapon, and seized another man’s weapon for the attack. He didn’t elaborate. Since overthrowing its secular dictator in in 2011, Tunisia has been battling militant groups with links to the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, which have carried out attacks on security forces. JAKARTA - The Corrutpion Eradication Commission has summoned a Pertamina commissioner Sahala Lumbangaol, who is also an expert staff of the state energy company to testify in a big graft case over the imports of tetra ethyl lead (TEL). The case, known as Innospec case, was over the imports of TEL by Pertamina in 2004-2005 from Britain with Innospec supplying. “Sahala Lumbangaol is summoned as witness in the case with SAM (Suroso Atmomartoyo) as the suspect,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said on Monday. Suroso was formerly processing director of PT Pertamina charged with accepting US$190,000 in bribery from the director of PT Sugih Interjaya (SI), Willy Sebastian Liem to approve Innospec through PT SI as a supplier of Tetraethyl Lead (TEL) for oil refineries of PT Pertamina from December 2004 to 2005. Willy also paid the travel cost of Suroso Atmomartoyo to London and Innospec official David P Turner including for accommodation at May Fair Radisson Ewardian Hotel 23-26 April in 2005 worth 749.66 pounds and at a Manchester Hotel on 27 April 2005 at 149.5 pounds. PT SI was named by The Associated Octel Company Limited (OCTEL) or Innospec to become sole agent for TEL sales in Indo-
nesia in 1982. However, the Indonesian government launched what was called blue sky program banning the use of TEL in gasoline and diesel oil as from Dec. 31 in 2004. Willy reported the program and plan to delay the process of implementing the regulation under a joint decision of the energy ands mineral resources minister, the state minister for the environment and the finance minister. Innospec then agreed to bribe Suroso, who had the authority to sign the purchase of TEL by PT Pertamina and approve the price of TEL before the president of PT Pertamina gave the final approval. On memorandum from Suroso the board of directors of PT Pertamina approved the TEL procurement for Pertamina’a refineries to be handled by PT SI. The bribery of US$190,000 for Suroso was transferred to his account at Bank UOB Singapore by phases from January 2004 to September 2005. The case was a follow-up of the Oil for Food Investigation by the US and British governments. The case against Suroso and Willy followed the arrest and conviction of four directors of Innospec by British court. The investigations of the convicts led to KPK arresting Suroso and Willy on 24 February 2015. (ant)

APEC trade chiefs vow to speed up work in WTO
MANILA — Trade ministers from 21 Asia-Pacific countries on Sunday issued strong support to the World Trade Organization’s efforts to boost global trade amid a flurry of regional free trade agreements. The ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation grouping of nations vowed at the end of their two-day meeting on the central Philippine resort island of Boracay to ratify by December a landmark trade facilitation deal and to contribute to a work program to conclude the much-delayed Doha round of trade negotiations. They reaffirmed in a separate document from their annual joint statement “the centrality and primacy of the multilateral trading system under the auspices of the WTO” in promoting trade and economic growth. They also promised to exercise restraint in implementing measures consistent with WTO provisions but which have a significant protectionist effect, “and to promptly rectify such measures, where they are implemented.” At the same time, the ministers’ joint statement welcomed progress on a collective study on opportunities and challenges ahead of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific. They instructed officials to report updates on it by November and to have a final report by next year’s ministerial meeting. APEC leaders agreed in Beijing in November to accelerate efforts to create the FTAAP “as early as possible” and endorsed a road map to its creation. The FTAAP goal is being pursued as talks for the TransPacific Partnership free trade initiative of 12 countries — including the United States, Japan and Australia, but excluding China — have been delayed by legislative debate in the U.S. over President Barack Obama’s controversial “fast-track” trade bill to complete the TPP deal. The bill was finally passed the by U.S. Senate on Friday, but it is expected to face a tougher time in the House, which resumes sessions on June 1. U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman told a news conference in Boracay that ministers from TPP member countries took the opportunity to meet over breakfast Sunday to review the status of the negotiations and talk about the work program going forward. “Our negotiators are working as we speak and working through issues,” he said. “We hope to conclude it soon; we’re very much in the end game.” But he declined to specify a timetable. A ministerial meeting originally scheduled for this week has been delayed after other members preferred to wait until after the U.S. House of Representatives also gives Obama authority to complete trade deals that Congress could approve or reject, but not change. “We reaffirm our shared vision that regional economic integration should not create unnecessary barriers between economies and lead to fragmentation of trade and investment flows,” APEC ministers said in their statement. They are also endorsing to their leaders a raft of measures bolstering micro enterprises’ ability to take part in global trade. Small companies comprise 97 percent of businesses in APEC countries, and contribute significantly to employment and poverty alleviation. The action plan includes streamlining rules of origin requirements, promoting greater use of information technology, cutting customs red tape, assisting micro enterprises in meeting requirements and widening their options for financing. Japan trade account returns to deficit in April TOKYO - Japan swung back to a trade deficit in April after the first surplus in almost three years in March, but the shortfall shrank drastically year-on-year thanks to stronger exports and lower energy bills, official data showed Monday. The monthly deficit came in at 53.4 billion yen ($440 million), about one-15th of the 825.5 billion yen posted a year earlier, finance ministry data showed. Exports rose 8.0 percent year-onyear chiefly on robust shipments of cars, electronics components and machinery as the yen was 17 percent cheaper against the dollar than last year. Imports dropped 4.2 percent as the cost of oil and gas fell. By region, US-bound shipments soared 21.4 percent, far outpacing a 2.4 percent increase in exports to China and a 0.8 percent rise in exports to the European Union. “Japan’s economy will be more robust this year, led by domestic consumption and external demand,” said Yoshitaka Suda, an economist at Nomura Holdings.
“We think that the US economy will continue to recover moderately, helping to boost Japan’s exports,” he told Bloomberg News. The April data came after a stronger-than-expected economic growth report last week. Data from the Cabinet Office showed Japan’s economy grew a faster-than-expected 0.6 percent onquarter in the first three months of 2015 as it crawls back from a brief recession. The Bank of Japan on Friday held off launching more stimulus and governor Haruhiko Koroda said the world’s number-three economy was on the upswing after taking a hit from a sales tax hike in April last year. Since taking office in late 2012, Japan’s prime minister has embarked on a high-profile policy blitz -- including big government spending and huge
central bank monetary easing -- in a bid to end years of deflation and lacklustre growth. The April deficit was much smaller than market expectations for a deficit of more than 300 billion yen although it reversed March’s 227.4 billion yen in surplus, which was the first blackink since June 2012. Capital Economics expects Japan’s balance to remain in the red in the near term. “If the exchange rate starts to weaken again in the second half of the year as we expect, crude oil imports will become more expensive again, soon,” said Marcel Thieliant, Japan economist at Capital Economics. “Overall, therefore, the trade balance will likely remain in the red in coming months.” he said in a note. Economists at SMBC Nikko Securities said “the trade balance will be likely to move around the break-even point for a while” due to stalling export growth, a pick-up in imports, and an upturn in oil prices. Tabanan now has a museum of ceramic art TABANAN - Pejaten village is not only famous for manufacturing earthenware but they have also developed ceramic craft products, which could very well be highlighted as a tourist attraction. Pejaten village is in fact well on its way to becoming a tourism village. To achieve this objective, the village has built a museum of ceramic art with a collection of hundreds of artificial ceramic items made by local artisans as well as heritage ceramics from the nineteenth century. It is expected to become a tourist destinations for travelers visiting Pejaten village.
According to the Operations Manager of the Museum, I Putu Oka Mahendra, the museum of ceramic art has hundreds of pieces in its collection that has been amassed since 2011. The museum also shows the historical development of ceramics in Pejaten village. Mahendra explained that initially the development of ceramics at Pejaten village began with the manufacture of pottery and roof tiles used in bartering for agricultural commodities with other regions because Pejaten village was arid and barren. “In the 1960s the manufacture of pottery here still used traditional techniques. Then, in 1980 there was assistance from the Dutch government in teaching new manufacturing techniques that allowed the craft to evolve,” said Mahendra. He explained that after learning from the Dutch government 15 different groups of craftsmen at Pejaten village began to produce
ceramics with a layer of glass or glaze. The development of ceramics at Pejaten is divided into several decades starting in the 1960s. Each period shows differences in forms, motifs, and levels of difficulty in the creation process. Aside from collecting contemporary ceramic from Tabanan, the museum also has a collection of ceramic tiles estimated to be more than a thousand years old and originate from northern Thailand, specifically, 9th century Sawankhalok “We obtained this collection from fishermen on the coast of West Java. The ceramics no longer have their glaze as they were buried in the sand for so long,” said Oka. He also explained that a team from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar investigated and found that the ceramics that were found on the coast of West Java in fact have the characteristic traits of ceramics from Sawankhalok. That he achieved, winning a Nobel Prize in 1994, but not without a struggle with mental illness that would make him a household name even more so than his achievements in mathematics.

NEGARA - Three puppies smuggled were secured by the ranks of Jembrana Police when making a highway operation on Jalan Sudirman, Denpasar-Gilimanuk, Saturday night (May 23). Aside from contraband animals, the operation led by the Deputy Chief of Jembrana Police, Anak Agung Rai Laba, also found a car without vehicle registration and toy gun. The operation held before the dawn was actually targeting drugs in anticipating the entry of drugs smuggled to Bali through land line. But from the operation involving at least 70 police officers from the Jembrana Police and Negara Police found 20 traffic violations. Of the many trucks inspected, the officers found a truck with destination to Flores transporting three puppies without official documents. From the description of the driver, Benyamin Bato, 43, from Flores, the truck with license plate L 9837 UP delivered puppies from Surabaya to Flores with a cost of IDR 1 million.
Recipient of the puppy delivery is on behalf of Fiki with the address at Trikora village, Bajawa subdistrict, Ngada, East Nusa Tenggara. Since having no document from the Agricultural Quarantine, the three puppies belonging to Hasky type were secured by police. The puppies placed in small cage were estimated to be two months old. “We have also secured a unit of Mercedes with license plate L 1207 DW without registration document and a toy pistol,” said Deputy Chief of Jembrana Police to reporters. The sedan without vehicle registration document brought a land pass, but it is only valid in the area of East Java. According to him, it poses a regular operation to maintain the security of Bali including the anticipation against drug trafficking. Nash had read the classic “Men of Mathematics” by E.T. Bell by the time he was in high school. He planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and studied for three years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh — now Carnegie Mellon University — but instead followed his passion for math. He then went to Princeton, where he worked on his equilibrium theory and, in 1950, received his doctorate with a dissertation on non-cooperative games. The thesis contained the definition and properties of what would later be called the Nash equilibrium. But it was while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959, when his wife, Alicia, was pregnant with their son, that schizophrenia began to emerge, a yearslong fight that was chronicled in the Academy Award-winning blockbuster “A Beautiful Mind.” The Nashes died in a car accident late Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike. He was 86; she was 82. “John’s remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory, and the story of his life with Alicia moved millions of readers and moviegoers who marveled at their courage in the face of daunting challenges,” Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement.
In an autobiography written for The Nobel Foundation website, Nash said delusions caused him to resign as a faculty member at MIT. He also spent several months in New Jersey hospitals on an involuntary basis. However, Nash’s schizophrenia diminished through the 1970s and 1980s as he “gradually began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking,” he wrote. 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind” was based on an unauthorized biography by Sylvia Nasar, who wrote that Nash’s contemporaries found him “immensely strange” and “slightly cold, a bit superior, somewhat secretive.” Much of his demeanor likely stemmed from mental illness. “A Beautiful Mind” won four Academy Awards, including best picture and best director, and generated interest in John Nash’s life story. Russell Crowe, who was nominated for best actor for playing Nash, tweeted that he was “stunned” by news of the couple’s death. “An amazing partnership,” he wrote. “Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts.” Jennifer Connelly, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Alicia Nash, called the couple “an inspiration,” and the film’s director, Ron Howard, tweeted that “it was an honor telling part of their story.” The Nashes split in 1963 then resumed living together several years later and finally remarried in 2001.

DUBLIN — First Minister Peter Robinson, the Protestant leader of Northern Ireland’s unity government, has been hospitalized after a suspected heart attack, his party said Monday. The 66-yearold leader of the Democratic Unionist Party was taken by ambulance to the Ulster Hospital east of Belfast near his home, then transferred to the cardiac specialist unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Catholic west Belfast. The Royal Victoria Hospital said in a statement that Robinson “underwent a procedure this morning and is currently recovering.” It declined to elaborate. The Democratic Unionist Party, which represents the British territory’s Protestant majority, asked media not to contact Robinson’s
family. Robinson has led Northern Ireland’s five-party government since 2008. Long a fierce critic of the outlawed Irish Republican Army and its allied Sinn Fein party, Robinson has defied expectations and worked with Irish Catholic colleagues — particularly former IRA commander Martin McGuinness, the Sinn Fein official who is co-leader of the government. Scientists link dolphin deaths in Gulf to 2010 BP spill
NEW ORLEANS — In a new study, a team of scientists says there’s a definite link between the massive BP oil spill in 2010 and a record number of dolphin deaths along the northern Gulf of Mexico. The scientists on Wednesday said large numbers of dead bottlenose dolphins found along shores since the spill suffered from lung and adrenal lesions caused by swimming in oilcontaminated seas. The research paper backs up previous findings linking dolphin deaths to the oil spill. The study involved federal scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. BP has rejected the contention linking the deaths to the oil spill. Instead, it said, the dolphins were likely suffering from common respiratory illnesses. The new study was published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed online journal PLOS ONE. With the release of the study, researchers and federal government made the most direct link yet between the spill and the dolphin deaths. “No feasible alternative causes remain that can reasonably explain the timing, location and nature of these distinct lesions and increase in deaths,” said Stephanie Venn-Watson, the study’s lead researcher with National
Marine Mammal Foundation. From 2002 to 2009, the Gulf averaged 63 dolphin deaths a year. That rose to 125 in the seven months after the spill in 2010 and 335 in all of 2011, averaging more than 200 a year since April 2010. That’s the longest and largest dolphin die-off ever recorded in the Gulf. The number of deaths has started to decline, according to federal scientists. Researchers said oil contamination caused chronic adrenal problems for dolphins and this in turn hurt their chances of surviving cold temperatures, infections and bacterial pneumonia. Also, the dolphins suffering from oil contamination had problems with pregnancy. Venn-Watson said dolphins were vulnerable to oil contamination because they take deep breaths at the sea’s surface — the same place where oil sheens covered the Gulf following the spill. “Dolphins were swimming into the oil,” she said. “Their lungs are large, they take big deep breaths at the water’s surface and hold it for extended
periods of time.” The study looked at 46 dead dolphins found in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama between June 2010 and December 2012. Researchers tested lung and adrenal gland tissues. The study looked at 22 dead dolphins found in Barataria Bay, a heavily oiled water body south of New Orleans where researchers first began noticing and tracking dolphin deaths after the spill. Venn-Watson said further studies would be needed to track and monitor the long-term effects of the contamination on the dolphin populations. BP questioned the validity of the study because it was based on what it termed “just a small sample set” of dolphins. The company accused the federal government of not releasing in a timely manner hundreds of necropsies. “This new paper fails to show that the illnesses observed in some dolphins were caused by exposure to Macondo oil,” said Geoff Morrell, a BP spokesman. WASHINGTON - Man’s best friend may have been his companion for far longer than believed, scientists reported, publishing an analysis that dates domesticated dogs to over 27,000 years ago. Humans possibly domesticated dogs 27,000 to 40,000 years ago, according to Swedish researchers whose work was published Thursday in the journal Current Biology. The scientists based their analysis on an ancient Siberian jaw fragment. Previous estimates said modern dogs diverged from their wolf ancestors 16,000 years ago after the last ice age. The “Taimyr” wolf bone in the study, dated to 35,000 years ago, shows that the animal was the most recent ancestor of wolves and modern dogs. “Dogs may have been domesticated much earlier than is generally believed,” said Love Dalen from the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Dalen said the only other explanation for the unusual bone was the less likely possibility that a major divergence between wolf populations took place at that time that gave birth to modern wolves while the wolf population became extinct. The Taimyr wolf lived a few thousand years after Neanderthals disappeared and modern humans spread throughout Asia and Europe, the study said. DNA analysis also showed modern Siberian Huskies and Greenland sled dogs have an “unusually large” number of gene in common with the Taimyr wolf. (afp)

WASHINGTON — The combination of global warming and shifting population means that by mid-century, there will be a huge increase in the number of Americans sweating through days that are extremely hot, a new study says. People are migrating into areas — especially in the Southeast — where the heat is likely to increase more, said the authors of a study published Monday by the journal Nature Climate Change. The study highlighted the Houston-Dallas-San Antonio and Atlanta-CharlotteRaleigh corridors as the places where the double whammy looks to be the biggest. “It’s not just the climate that is changing in the future,” said study co-author Linda Mearns, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. “It is many things: how many people and where people are that affects their exposure to climate changes.” In a unique study looking at the interplay of projected changes in climate and population, scientists tried to characterize the number of people who will feel temperatures of 95 degrees (35 Celsius) or higher and how often they will feel it. They used a figure called person days for the extreme heat to reflect both the length of time heat waves continued and how many people felt it by multiplying people affected by how many days they felt the heat. Between 1970 and 2000, the U.S. averaged about 2.3 billion person days of extreme heat each year. But between 2040 and 2070 that number will be between 10 and 14 billion person days a year, according to the study. The scientists used 11 different climate models based on current trends of heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions and matched those with demographic trends. Both the increased heat and population shifts had about equal effects but together they made matters even worse, said lead author Bryan Jones, a population geographer at the City University of New York. The question is, will be people adapt by changing their lifestyle, such as staying indoors and using more air conditioning, or will they move to cooler climates. Jones said it is unlikely that people will move to cooler areas to escape the heat, saying historically people tend to move away from colder areas and into warmer areas like Florida, Arizona and North Carolina. Several outside scientists praised the study. University of Georgia meteorology professor Marshall Shepherd said the problem is likely even worse when you take into consideration the fact that cities get hotter than rural areas. (ap)

A restaurant and villa allegedly in violation GIANYAR - The coastal areas of Gianyar have become the target of investors wishing to establish tourist accommodations. Unfortunately, many tourism facilities such as villas and restaurant have not followed the rules of the the official spatial plan which dictate that buildings must be built at least a 100 meters from the shore. One of the restaurant that is established on the shoreline of Keramas, Blahbatuh, is additionally alleged to not have a permit. Tourist accommodations that perch on the edge of Keramas Beach, Blahbatuh, can be reached by taking Jalan Bypass I.B. Mantra to the Jalan Pantai Keramas. There is a restaurant on the beach and next to it several villas are under construction. The newly built restaurant clearly violates the rules of the spatial plan, as it is definetly less than 100 meters form the shore. Such violations do occur not only on Keramas Beach but similar constructions can also be found on other beaches, such as Siyut, Lebih, Purnama, Masceti and Saba to Ketewel. Head of the Gianyar Integrated Licensing Office (BPPT), Ngakan Putu Darmajati, when asked for his confirmation about these offenses, expressed surprise. He said that he has never issued any permits for the construction of tourist facilities such as restaurants nor villas located on the coastal line of Keramas
Beach. “Around Keramas Beach there are indeed some villas but they are quite far from the beach. I have just now heard about the restaurant and villa located close to shoreline of Keramas -I have never issued any permit for a restaurant at that location (Keramas Beach—Ed),” he said. After being informed, Darmajati promised to look into the situation and to coordinate with the Gianyar Municipal Police in order to discipline those in violation. “To my recollection, I have indeed never issued any permits for buildings at that location. I will forward this information to the municipal police so that they can take decisive action,” he said. When asked about similar occurrences at other locations along the coast of Gianyar, Ngakan Dharmajati explained that such conditions are often the result of coastal abrasion,

He added that there is a structuring team for the Besakih tourist attraction. The team is led by the subdistrict head of Rendang and was established based on a decree by the Regent of Karangasem. Until now, there are still complaints from visitors about having been inconvenienced when visiting Besakih Temple. BANGLI - Though known as an area with many natural springs, hundreds of families in Alengkong, Songan B, Kintamani do not have access to clean drinking water. To meet their daily needs, the people living in this hamlet are forced to consume rainwater that they have caught and as well as water from Lake Batur that they store in their wells. Sometimes the water they consume is mossy and dirty. One local residents, Jero Erna, for instance admitted that she and her family consume stored rain water everyday. They collect rainwater and fetch water from Lake Batur. This water is not only used for their cattle and for bathing but for their own consumption as well, without so much as being boiled. “I have gotten used to drinking it so I don’t get sick,” she explained. Local residents of Alengkong hamlet are forced to drink unclean water because they have yet to be served by the municipal waterworks (PDAM) or other sources of clean water. Hamlet chief of Alengkong, Nengah Mandiyasa recognises the shortage of
clean water that local residents face and said that all 210 of families of Alengkong rely on rain and lake water to meet their daily needs. According to Mandiyasa, the community of Alengkong actually never faces water shortages per se, because during rainy season they catch rainwater, while in dry season they collect lake water that is stored in a reservoir. In fact the real problem that the residents of Alengkong face, is that there is no pipeline from the reservoir to people’s houses so the water ends up getting dirty from stagnating and then becomes discolored and filled with moss. Mandiyasa therfore hopes that the government can help with the installation of a pipeline connecting the reservoir directly to people’s homes. Hopefully, local people will no longer need to store water in their wells. “Despite consuming this water every day -fortunately, our residents have never complained about getting sick from it,” said Mandiyasa. SINGARAJA - Though the problem of plastic rice being distributed to the public has not made its way to Buleleng, the government is nonetheless being vigilant. The regency of Buleleng has instructed the Buleleng Cooperative, Trade and Industry Agency to oversee the rice supplies coming to Bulelelng from Java. Buleleng still relies on rice supplied from Central Java and East Java to meet their demands. Head of the Buleleng Cooperative, Trade and Industry Agency, Ni Made Arnika, when contacted on Sunday (May 24) confirmed that such vigilance is being enforced. Following the discovery of the circulation of plastic rice in Java recently, Arnika wants to make sure that no platic rice is found circulating in Buleleleng. She added that a lot of Javanese rice is brought into Buleleng because in some seasons local farmers are not able to supply local demands. Rice is brought into to Buleleng from Central and East Java, every two weeks with 2 and 3 tons orders from each distributor in North Bali. Most of the orders are for premium class rice which has recently been in high demand by consumers in Bali. “Local Balinese rice produced by our farmers cannot be mixed with synthetic rice. So the focus of our small team is on rice coming in from Java,” she said. To prevent the plastic rice from entering Buleleng,
her agency has deployed a small team to closely monitor the supply of rice from Java though distributors in Buleleng. “The supply from Java cannot just be cut off, because Javanese rice is much sought after by Balinese consumers, especially in North Bali where there are sometimes shortages of local rice,” she said. Other than tightening the supervision of Javanese rice distribution, the Buleleng Cooperative, Trade and Industry Agency has been supervising the sale of rice by retailers at traditional markets in Buleleng. Based on such supervision, Buleleng has been declared to be plastic rice free. Nevertheless, the issue of plastic rice is quite disturbing to people in North Bali. Many of whom are concerned that they might have already consumed synthetic rice. Many rice merchants have even said that their sales have gone down due to such fears, whereas demands are only slightly less than before the scare. (kmb38)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Audiard’s ‘Dheepan’ wins Palme d’Or in upset Cannes finale CANNES, France — The 68th Cannes Film Festival was brought to a surprising close Sunday with Jacques Audiard’s Sri Lankan refugee drama taking the festival’s coveted top honor, the Palme d’Or. The choice of “Dheepan,” as selected by a jury led by Joel and Ethan Coen, left some critics scratching their heads.

While the dapper French filmmaker has drawn widespread acclaim for films such as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone,” some critics were disappointed by the thriller climax of Audiard’s film. “Dheepan” is about a trio of Sri Lankans who pretend to be a family in order to flee their war-torn country and are settled in a violent housing project outside Paris. “This isn’t a jury of film critics,” Joel Coen told reporters after the awards ceremony, alongside fellow jurors like Guillermo del Toro and Jake Gyllenhaal. “This is a jury of artists who are looking at the work.” The win for “Dheepan” comes at
a time when Europe is particularly attuned to the experience of immigrants, following the recent deaths of hundreds crossing the Mediterranean, seeking Italian shores. Jury members, though, said “Dheepan” was chosen for its overall strength as a film, rather than any topicality. “We all thought it was a very beautiful movie,” said Ethan Coen, calling the decision “swift.” ‘’Everyone had some high level of excitement and enthusiasm for it.” Audiard, springing to the podium at the Palais des Festivals, accepted the award with warm gratitude, bowing to the jury. He was joined by the makeshift
parents of his film: Kalieaswari Srinivasan and Antonythasan Jesuthasan, who himself was Tamil Tiger child soldier before finding political asylum in France. The runner-up prize, the Grand Prix, went to “Son of Saul,” a grim Holocaust drama by first-time Hungarian director László Nemes. Some expected Nemes’ horrifying plunge into the life of an Auschwitz worker to take the top award, but it’s been 26 years since a debut film (Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, and Videotape”) was given the Palme. English actress Sienna Miller and Canadian actor Xavier Dolan, both jury members, sounded especially moved by “Son of Saul.” Miller called it “breathtaking” and an extraordinary accomplishment for a first-time filmmaker. Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the masterful 68-year-old Taiwanese filmmaker, won best director for his first feature in eight years: “The Assassin,” a lushly painterly martial arts drama. The best actress prize was split but not the way some expected. It was given to both Rooney Mara, half of the romantic pair of Todd Haynes’ ‘50s lesbian drama “Carol,” and Emmanuelle Bercot, the French star of the roller coaster marriage drama “My King.” (Bercot also directed the festival opener, “Standing Tall,” about a delinquent teenager.) Any split was presumed to go to Mara and her “Carol” co-star, Cate Blanchett. Best actor was awarded to Vincent Lindon, the veteran French actor of Stéphane Brizé’s “The Measure of a Man.” He plays a man struggling to make a living after a long period of unemployment. Entertainment ‘Tomorrow land’ tops North American box office LOS ANGELES - Sci-fi adventure-drama “Tomorrow land” starring George Clooney went straight to the top of the North American box office on its debut weekend, estimates showed Sunday. The Disney movie, which has had mixed reviews, was projected to pull in $40.7 million over the Memorial Day long weekend, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. Directed by Brad Bird, the film tells the story of former boy genius Frank (Clooney) and the precocious Casey (Britt Robertson) in their danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of a mysterious place known only as “Tomorrowland.” The movie relegated musical comedy sequel “Pitch Perfect 2” into second place in the box office standings, expected to rake in $38 million over four days to Monday in the United States and Canada. Starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, it follows the fortunes of the Barden Bellas singing team as they chase international success after being banned from the competitive circuit. Third was the reboot of Australian director George Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise, with $30 million. It is the fourth film of the iconic series and the first since 1985’s “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.” Fourth in the box office was a new entry for horror classic “Poltergeist” ($27.7 million) on its debut weekend in movie theaters. DENPASAR - As a way to encourage novice entrepreneurs in Bali to continue developing their businesses and absorb more labour, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the RI has prepared capital worth IDR 7 billion for distribution in 2015. In addition, training and mentoring for novice entrepreneurs will also be provided so that they can take their businesses to the next level. Division Head of the Entrepreneurial Mentoring and Deputy Assistant of Enterprise Affairs and Human Resources Development, for the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the RI, Indriana, announced the good news during an entrepreneurship training session for novices on Sunday (May 24). The training session that is being held over three days from May 22 until 25 is the result of cooperation
between the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises, The Bali Cooperatives and SMEs Agency, Bali TV and Bank Mandiri. Indriana stated that the training session is aimed at improving the management skills of novice humans resources in SME’s. The main priority of the training program is to attempt to upgrade the class of business that these novice entrepreneurs are running, once they have the tools that
they gain though this training. “They are also learning to create business development plans,” said Indriana. After assessing the post-training presentations of these entrepreneurs, the amount of capital required to help develop their businesses can be assessed. At a later date, these entrepreneurs will also be given support and capital if need be for further business development. With a combination of training and financial assistance, it is expected that these businesses will grow considerably. “The most important thing is that these businesses are able to grow which in turn will provide jobs. Currently these businesses are self run but naturally with a little growth, these entrepreneurs will begin to
hire friends and relatives,” added Indriana. For Bali, the target is very much the development of novice entrepreneurs. In addition to providing training, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises is also cooperating with the Bali Cooperatives and SMEs Agency to undertake similar activities. “The Ministry will be providing funds for the Provincial Cooperative Agency for the same kind of training with more focus on vocational skills,” said Indriana. The Bali Cooperative Agency will therefor be providing support and assistance for entrepreneurs in the form of training and capital. Hopefully, after following the training sessions, these entrepreneurs
will be able to run their business well, expand and provide job opportunities as well as share what they have learned with their colleagues. “The Ministry of Co-ops and SME’s aims to develop the skills of 1 million entrepreneurs in five years. We will not be working alone, but in collaboration with ten ministerial institutions, agencies and professional institutions,” Indriana concluded.
