Double-Act: Dardenne siblings talk brotherhood

CANNES, France — Gray, wispy-haired Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne are more than just brothers born three years apart. The acclaimed Belgian directors, whose film “Two Days, One Night” lit up this year’s Cannes Film Festival, are also two cogs in the same creative machine, first fused together by their opposition to their religious father and now incapable of working apart. “At the start we thought, practically, that if one is ill for a week, it’s good as the other can continue working. But this isn’t true. We need each other for it,” says Jean-Pierre, 63. Luc, 60, goes further. “It’s a little psychological. That we are brothers that work together, it’s linked to our father. We opposed him a lot together when we were growing up over his morality, religion. It cemented us more than we think,” he says. Whatever the reason, their cinematic synthesis has worked with great success — the duo already have two Palmes d’Or under their belt since they first teamed up in 1978. The first winner was 1999’s “Rosetta,” about a 17-year-old girl, played by first-time actress Emilie Dequenne, who tried to escape her alcoholic mother. The second was 2005’s “The Child” — a tale of an adolescent father who wants to give up his baby. But this year’s gritty “Two Days, One Night,” which features a tour-de-force performance by Marion Cotillard as Sandra — a desperate and depressed mother of two trying to save her job at a solar-panel factory — could well hand the brothers a record-breaking third.
The message of the film, in which Cotillard’s Sandra tries to convince her 12 co-workers to forfeit their 1,000 euro bonus to save her job, is at heart a philosophical exploration of human solidarity versus selfinterest. A similar philosophical strand runs throughout their body of work, which spans 10 features and numerous documentaries over four decades. And it’s little wonder. Luc studied philosophy, while Jean-Pierre took drama. The brothers’ work has never strayed far from home (or autobiography). Both the fraught father-figure and the setting of their hometown, the deprived Belgian city of Liege, recur within their work. The bond between father and child featured strongly in “The Child,” but also crops up in this year’s offering, in which a dad literally comes to blows with his son over whether or not they should give up the bonus selflessly. This time around the father is the virtuous character. “We at first wanted the son to say “Yes”, and the father “No” (to helping Sandra). But we didn’t want to condemn the father in the film this time. We’ve already condemned too many fathers in our films! We felt bad. It’s a father-rehabilitation,” says Luc.

FLORENCE, Italy — Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are officially “Bound” to each other. The celebrity couple, who have made a habit of over-the-top, public displays of affection, got hitched Saturday in a decidedly private spot: a Renaissance fortress in Florence. The nuptials were confirmed to The Associated Press by Kardashian’s representative, who noted the reporting of E! Online, the news site from the network that carries her reality show, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.” E! Online reported the wedding party consisted of her sisters, while stepfather Bruce Jenner walked her down the aisle. Andrea Bocelli and John Legend sang for the couple at the reception. BANGKOK - Public anger at the Thai military’s coup grew Sunday as more than one thousand protesters shouting “Get Out!” marched across the capital Bangkok in defiance of an army warning against protests. Demonstrators began marching in the Chidlom district and made their way across the city to the Victory Monument cheered by onlookers, an AFP reporter at the scene said, after a tense standoff with armed soldiers in the city’s retail heart. It was the largest expression of dissent since the army seized power on Thursday after months of political turmoil. There was no sign of soldiers or police on the streets during the march Sunday, which went ahead despite a junta statement calling on people not to protest and a martial law ban on gatherings of more than five people.
“I am not afraid of them because the more we are afraid of them, the more they will stamp on us,” protester Kongjit Paennoy, 50, told AFP. “We want an election -- to choose our own boss.” The military has detained former premier Yingluck Shinawatra and scores of other ousted government leaders and political figures since the coup, which brought sharp international criticism. “I ask for people’s understanding on the current situation and that they refrain from anti-coup rallies, because democracy cannot proceed normally at the moment,” said junta spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree Sunday morning, add-
ing a warning against using social media to “incite” unrest. Before the main march, minor scuffles broke out as dozens of protesters, some waving signs reading “Junta Out” and “Fuck Coup”, staged a boisterous demonstration, jeering angrily and pushing at lines of armed soldiers outside a Bangkok shopping mall. At least two protesters were taken away by the troops, one bleeding, according to AFP journalists. Possibly the exodus will also target a number of sordid places in Jembrana. Today it has started to be subtly felt in Jembrana. A number of nightclubs get new staff mostly consisting of women migrants from Java. They can easily be found in cafés and dimly lit stalls at Delod Berawah, Baluk village and other areas. The government is expected to immediately address this matter by sweeping the migrants, especially the nightspots frequently visited by men masher. Some of the café girls interviewed said if they came to Bali to make a living from entertainment. One of them, War, 19, was a girl who had just gradu-
ated from high school and immediately came to Bali as invited by her relative. Her family, including her parents, did not know that her job was not far away from liquor, cigarettes and free sex. He earned money from selling beer, chanting songs and sexy body wrapped in skimpy outfits. Rn who took her apparently had long got involved in such a profession. SINGARAJA - Vibrant opening of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) for the level of Buleleng County was held on Friday night (May 23) at the former Buleleng Harbor. Hundreds of people gathered to witness the event and it was also attended by the officials such as the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana, Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra, Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency Ketut Warkadea and other officials in the ranks of the Buleleng County. The BAF of Buleleng took the theme ‘Kertamasa: the life dynamics of agrarian society leading to universal welfare.’ Such an activity took place smoothly for three days, on May 23-25, 2014. The open performance of Buleleng BAF posed the tryout session for the participants of the BAF before the event in the provincial level. On the first day, Regent Suradnyana witnessed the performance by the younger generation of Buleleng until the end of the show. The first stunning appearance was the presentation of gong kebyar by Santhi Budaya adult art troupe and classic angklung gamelan music by Bakti Kembang troupe of Buleleng. “I really appreciated the performance of BAF participants of Buleleng County level. Hopefully, the art and creativity could be displayed better, and many dances such as Jagung Gembal, exploring the philosophy of Ki Barak Panji Sakti came to Buleleng,” he said. The lack of funding from Buleleng government did not discourage the BAF participants. Even, it was able to drive the motivation to be more creative and perform optimally. “Well, that’s what we have, the budget of the Buleleng BAF is not as large as other counties, reaching about IDR 1 billion for the performance and development of several art studios in Buleleng. Nevertheless, all the participants were still able to perform optimally,” said Regent Suradnyana. Furthermore, the Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Ketut Warkadea, added the appearance of the participants was quite good and would be improved before the BAF in the provincial level. “In addition to cultural preservation, the appearance of the participants can also make creation and innovation. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — From the dusty soccer pitch, 11-year-old Maynor Ayala can see two ways out of the gangcontrolled slums: on a professional soccer team, or in a cheap coffin. Maynor is euphoric after scoring a goal for the first time in weeks, and he briefly allows himself to imagine going to the World Cup one day. But then his boyish smile fades into hard talk. “My cousin was shot here on the field,” Maynor says, miming a pistol with his thumb and index finger. “Remember the taxi driver they executed here a while ago?” asks his 14-year-old friend, Marvin Cruz. “We also went to see a body cut in pieces over there by the bridge,” Maynor adds. Their coach listens with despair. Luis Lopez, 45, who uses a wheelchair because of a bicycle accident over a decade ago, is working the kids hard, hoping the discipline of sport will keep them out of the gangs that dominate much of Tegucigalpa. His threadbare soccer program is modest compared to the challenges these children face: the pull of the streets, violence, poverty and drugs. But as for slum children from Brazil to Botswana, the game is also a lifeline. Maynor, Marvin and others on the pitch give the coach hope against the reality of pot smokers on the sidelines of the pitch and lost souls like 14-year-old Antony who don’t stay in school. Luisito is teaching boys and girls to play soccer, knowing that
the real game is to stay alive. Maynor may not know the statistics — that a child his age is shot to death every four days in Honduras, and that the odds only get worse as you get older. But he knows that violent death is common, and that the corpses offer a glimpse of his future if he moves toward the gangs. He goes to see the bodies, he says, “because you think that next time it could be you there.” Maynor’s neighborhood is called Progreso, a name that mocks its dirt roads, open sewage canals and crowded houses. It is surrounded by gang territories and an iron fence its 100 families put up to keep out criminals. Even so, children hide inside after dark. The soccer pitch is built on a graveyard of neighbors who were buried alive when Hurricane Mitch collapsed the hills in 1998. Jose de la Paz Herrera, known as “Chelato Ucles,” the godfather of Honduran soccer, stepped in with funds to help equip it. Now 74, he managed the first Honduran team to reach the World Cup — to Spain in 1982 — and he still combs the slums in search of talent like Emilio Izaguirre, 28, one of just five Hondurans

INKSTER, Michigan — The oldest-living American, a member of a select group of the living to have been born in the 19th century, has celebrated her 115th birthday. Jeralean Talley, who was born May 23, 1899, celebrated Friday as the secondoldest person in the world, according to a list maintained by the Gerontology Research Group, which tracks the world’s longest-living people. She went fishing last year and still gets around on her own with the help of a walker. On her birthday, Talley is going to the doctor for a checkup, although she says she doesn’t feel sick. The Michigan resident plans to celebrate with family and friends at a local church on
Sunday. Talley’s knees occasionally hurt, her right hand shakes, she has a hard time hearing and her memory comes and goes. DENPASAR - The number of Chinese tourists to Bali surged 50.17 percent to 151,058 in the first quarter of this year from 100,592 in the same period last year. Chinese tourists accounted for 18.09 percent of the total number of 835,099 visitors to Bali or the second largest after Australians that accounted for 24.84 percent. Tourism observer Dewa Nyoman Putra attributed the increase mainly to that country’s improved economic condition which grew 7.4 percent in the first quarter of the year. In addition, there are many national holidays in China in the first quarter of the year, including Chinese new year from January 31 to February 6 , Nyoman Putra said. Increase was recorded in the number of visitors from many other countries although decline was recorded in the number of visitors from Japan, Taiwan, Russia and Germany. The number of visitors from both Australia and China are dominant, but the highest growth was recorded in the number of visitors from China and Singapore. The number of visitors from Singapore grew 48.72 percent or the second highest growth after China. The trend is encouraging and could boost investment in the tourism sector in Bali, Nyoman Putra said. China is a potential market for Bali tourism especially with cultural similarities between Bali and China, he said. The central government as well as regional administration should fully utilize the favorable trend that Bali will continue to be the favorite tourist destination for Chinese, Nyoman Putra added.

WASHINGTON — Confronting critics of his foreign policy, President Barack Obama will soon outline a strategy for his final years in office that aims to avoid overreach as the second of the two wars he inherited comes to a close. The president’s commencement address Wednesday at the U.S. Military Academy will come amid growing frustration in the White House with Republicans and other critics who contend that Obama has weakened America’s standing around the world and faltered on problems across the Middle East and in Russia, China and elsewhere. That criticism has mounted over the past year following Obama’s decision to pull back a military strike in Syria and his inability to stop Russia from annexing territory from Ukraine. A White House official said Obama would specifically address both situations, as well as the status of ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. The president is also expected to discuss how he views shifts in the counterterrorism threat from al-Qaida and other groups, according to the official, who insisted on anonymity to preview the president’s speech. Obama came into office vowing to end the lengthy American-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and seeking to keep a war-weary nation
out of unnecessary conflicts. KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s critical presidential election got underway Sunday under the wary scrutiny of a world eager for stability in a country rocked by a deadly uprising in the east. While there were no immediate reports of fighting, pro-Russia insurgents were trying to block voting by snatching ballot boxes and patrolling polling stations. The vote was taking place three months after the ouster of the country’s pro-Russia leader, who was chased from power by months of protests triggered by his decision to reject a pact with the European Union and forge closer ties with Moscow. There were no immediate signs of clashes on Sunday after weeks of intense battles. But it also appeared little voting was taking place in the east: The regional administration in Donetsk said that only 426 out of 2,430 polling stations in the region were open Sunday, and none in the city of Donetsk, which has 1 million people. MANILA — An Asian Development Bank official warned of a largely unnoticed crisis in Southeast Asia: private investment in infrastructure has not recovered in the nearly two decades since the Asian financial crisis. Stephen Groff, ADB Vice President for operations, said in an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on East Asia, that private funding for infrastructure in five of the biggest Southeast Asian members has declined steeply. It was $38 billion in 1997 and around $25 billion in 2010. “It’s coming up but it’s nothing like it was in 1997,” he told The Associated Press. “Essentially, the ASEAN financial crisis led to a crisis of confidence with governments, a crisis of confidence in the private sector, and there hasn’t been enough investment or discussion or development of tools that allow risk-sharing to be used appropriately.” The five members he referred to were Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The other members are Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei. Groff said while private investors
assume risks, there are other types of risks that governments and financial institutions need to assume “and that hasn’t yet come into play as much as it needs to.” The region, which will launch next year a common market comprising 600 million people, needs to spend $60 billion yearly until 2020 to meet its infrastructure needs. But Groff said ASEAN currently spends only about half that. He said while there has been some progress in a number of countries in recent years in helping facilitate private investments in infrastructure by addressing legal and regulatory issues that restrict private participation, the process is not easy and takes time. There is a need to think about financing interest mechanisms, mechanisms to mitigate risks, developing bankable projects that attract private investments and bringing back home the region’s extra savings that have been invested
in low-yielding treasury bonds in the U.S. and Europe, he added. To bring back some of those funds, the ADB has helped develop the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund which began lending last year. Two infrastructure projects in Indonesia have been funded while more projects throughout the region are in the pipeline, Groff said. The fund is being managed by the ADB, with funding coming from ASEAN members and the bank. Indonesian Finance Minister Muhamad Chatib Basri said infrastructure is the “first priority” for his country after it had established political stability under outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. However, he said the “ main challenge in the future is not only sustainable growth but also shared growth.” Philippine Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said the region’s relatively young population, natural resources and its geographic location are factors that would contribute to growth. But to make sustainable growth a reality the “capital surplus region” has to make more infrastructure investments, he added.
PARIS - Once the preserve of the ultra-rich and celebrities, a flight on a private jet is now available for as little as 550 euros an hour, with technology and competition helping to bring down sky-high prices. A growing number of firms offering such flights have emerged in recent years, some employing online facilities to match global demand, thereby improving fleet efficiency and contributing to cheaper flights. Adam Twidell, chief executive and founder of PrivateFly, said there are more than 500 operators and over 2,500 individual aircraft in the European charter market alone, yet “over 30 percent of flights are flying empty, repositioning for their next charter”. His company has been seeking to reduce these empty flights by going online to match demand. Beyond the usual service of offering chartered jet flights, PrivateFly lists on its website what is known as “empty legs” -- a trip from a certain destination at a fixed date, but at a price that can be as much as 75 percent lower than regular rates. The price listed for a “empty leg” flight on a 7-seater from Bristol to Cannes is 3,630 pounds, less than half the regular price of 8,730 euros, according to the website. “When we launched in 2008, many people told me that people would never book a private jet online, but I’m pleased to say that we have disproved this many many times over,” said Twidell. In one single app booking last year, a client booked an itinerary worth $500,000 in Europe, which Twidell said demonstrated clients are comfortable using technology that provides them benefits. “Technology is playing a key role in matching supply and demand, driving more efficiency and giving the customer more transparency and greater cost-effectiveness -- this is very important to today’s private jet user and mirrors what has already happened in other travel sectors, such as airlines, hotels and car hire,” he added. WiJet is meanwhile positioning itself as an “taxijet airline”. It has recently signed a deal with Air France to fly first class passengers to their final destination. The four-seater Citation Mustang used for such hops are going at 2,200 euros per flight hour -- or 550 euros per passenger. Warren Buffett’s NetJets was the first to see an opportunity in the niche market, offering partial plane ownership to those who do not want to buy a jet outright. Launched in 1986, the company now has 700 planes in service, making it “the biggest fleet in the world, commercial airlines included”, it said. Some 3,700 people are partial owners and 3,900 others in the United States and Europe are holders of cards that entitle them to a certain number of flight hours every year. Clement Lauriot-Prevost, NetJets associate director for Europe, said his company is not only a cost effective solution but also makes sense operations wise. “A plane is immobilised between one and three months a year for maintenance. When a plane has broken down, there is no other solution unless one owns a second plane,” he said. Olivier Villa, director of programmes for French aircraft maker Dassault Aviation, meanwhile said the concept of partial ownership also allows “new clients to access business aviation and to appreciate its benefits before moving towards acquisition of full ownership.” Aircraft makers are smiling as the trend to popularise jets grows. Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Bombardier’s vice president for marketing of commercial aviation, said it translates to far greater sales for aircraft makers. After all, an individual client would likely buy just one jet whereas such chartered flight companies would order dozens at a shot.

On that account, Kusuma Wardani said on Saturday (May 24) that her party would soon conduct a thorough evaluation and visited the schools whose students did not pass the exam in order to know about the real problems. Even, the Bali Education Agency paid special attention to Buleleng having the highest number of students that did not pass the exam reaching 54 people. “We will come down to location directly and make a visit to schools in Buleleng. We are going to see the actual condition of the schools whose students did not pass,” she said. According to her, there were 9 high schools in Buleleng whose students did not pass the exam and most of those schools were away from urban areas. Meanwhile, in Karangasem there were 6 schools, Bangli (3 schools) and then in Jembrana, Tabanan and Klungkung respectively 1 school. “Most students that did not pass the exam are in Buleleng. Then, most of those schools are located far from urban areas,” she said. Some aspects becoming the subject matter of the evaluation would include the readiness of school infrastructure and readiness of the educators because no matter how good the education sys-
tem was, the learning process could not run smoothly without being supported by teacher’s competence. She said the failure of the 88 high and vocational school students in the national exam were not the results of the examination days only, but it had actually indicated the process starting in grade X, grade XI and grade XII. “In other words, the students have been evaluated since the grade X and grade XI, not only in the grade XII,” she said. Kusuma Wardani also called for the 88 high and vocational school students who did not pass should not be too disappointed because there was still a chance to take package C held in next August or if they insisted on getting a high school diploma they had to repeat in grade XII for a year and attend the national exam next year. “If they would like to attend the package C exam, we plan it to be held in August, but the schedule remains to be from central government. So, we have to inventory who will attend the package C exam. Besides, the students must also prepare themselves,” she said. She also expected parents and teachers to assist children and students who did not pass because they were perhaps psychologically somewhat depressed. “We hope parents, teachers and principals to provide full guidance so the students are not kept mentally depressed. They must be motivated. The students can still take the package C exam and continue their study to college,” she said. Separately, the Head of Bali Education Quality Assurance Agency (LPMP), Dr. Made Alit Mariana, also asked the
school authority whose students did not pass the exam to make a thorough evaluation. “The number of high and vocational school students who attended the national exam increased and those who did not pass also increased. This must become a note for the school in facilitating, learning, preparing students to master the competencies and improving their self-confidence in facing the national exam because it is an integral activity in the process of education,” he said. All the stakeholders related to education either the Education Agency in the provincial or county/municipality, the school, the Institute of Education for Teachers (LPTK), college and related parties were urged to make collaborative efforts among various agencies in preparing students for the exam. “We also have to educate as well as reassure parents, students and community to make the national exam process confidential. Thus, the result of national exam can really become a reference of the educational outcomes and national exam serves as a benchmark of student competency where the results can be used in the admission to the next level,” he said. As reported earlier, a total of 88 high and vocational school students did not pass the exam. This number increased compared to the amount last year only reaching 13 students. Of the 78 high school students who did not pass, they were mostly from social sciences program reaching 75 people, language program (1 people) and natural sciences program (2). In terms of distribution areas, the high school students who did not pass scattered in Buleleng (54 people), Karangasem (14), Bangli (6), Tabanan (2), Klungkung (1) and Jembrana (1). China offers leniency to suspects after bombing Associated Press Writer
BEIJING — Authorities called Sunday for anyone involved in terrorist activities in China’s restive northwest to turn themselves in and promised leniency following a bombing that killed dozens of people. The announcement came on the heels of a security crackdown launched over the weekend in response to Thursday’s attack at a morning street market, which killed at least 43 people and wounded dozens. The official Xinhua News Agency said an anti-terrorism campaign in the northwest Xinjiang region would target religious extremist groups, underground gun workshops and “terrorist training camps,” and that “terrorists and extremists will be hunted down and punished.” Police have revealed the names of five people blamed for the attack and said they were part of a “terrorist gang.” Based on their names, all the suspects appeared to be Uighurs, the region’s most populous Muslim minority. Police said that four of the
assailants were killed in the bombing and that the fifth was captured Thursday night. In Sunday’s announcement, public security officials in Xinjiang said people involved in a range of designated terrorist activities would receive mitigated punishments if they turn themselves in within 30 days, Xinhua reported. The announcement also said those who surrender and offer information about other suspects or criminal activities “will be given minor punishment or exempted from punishment.” The
bombing in Urumqi, Xinjiang’s capital, left the region’s ethnic Chinese on edge and raised fears that organized extremism was on the rise. Ismail Tiliwaldi, a former governor of Xinjiang, said in an editorial posted on a website sponsored by regional authorities that the attackers “vainly attempted to attract attention through a large-scale bloody incident and maliciously sow ethnic estrangement and cause hatred and opposition to achieve their criminal plot of separating the country,” according to Xinhua.

PARIS — France’s interior minister says that two Jewish men have been attacked as they left a synagogue in the Paris area. Bernard Caseneuve ordered police around France to increase
security at Jewish houses of worship and other Jewish establishments, according to a statement Sunday. There were no immediate details on the Saturday night attack on two men leaving the synagogue in Creteil, southeast of Paris.
The attack came hours after a deadly attack on the Jewish Museum of Brussels that left three people, including an Israeli couple, dead and a fourth seriously injured. Belgian police have arrested a suspect and were searching for a second.
CANNES, France — The director of a movie based on the Malaysian Airlines plane disappearance says he rushed the trailer of the project so he could bring it to the Cannes Film Festival. “I was seeing the festival calendars and I could not miss Cannes. And so I told my team to make a trailer immediately,” said Rupesh Paul of his planned film, “The Vanishing Act.” It wasn’t until he arrived at the festival that he faced questions over the timing of the film’s promotion and whether he was being sensitive to the families of the missing passengers. “These things came in to my thoughts only after I came here,” said Paul, also a producer, in an interview on Saturday. “From the very first interview I was only asked about this fact that we did not even think of much when we were pitching this in India. Nobody asked this question in India actually. When we came to Europe this was the only question I faced.” The 35-year-old director says he never thought his actions might upset anyone but insists “that nobody will be hurt (by) this movie.” “Why should I gain out of somebody’s pain?” said Paul, who is also behind the movie “Kamasutra 3D,” which was shown to buyers at the festival. The trailer for “The Vanishing Act” shows two crew members kissing as a third looks at them angrily. It’s something the director says will not be included in the main feature. “This trailer was not even meant to get released on the Internet online,” said Paul. “It was meant to show some investors and producers that the movie will be dramatic and thrilling. Somehow it got released, we had to give it to many people, it got out of my hands. And there is no love triangle in this movie at all and there is no romance in this movie.” A handgun is also featured in the movie, but Paul said it isn’t what it seems. “Everyone that has flown once on even a small flight will definitely understand that it is impossible to carry a gun inside, whatever you do,” he said. “So it’s impossible, but there is a weapon in the story.” The director is keeping tight-lipped about his theory on how the plane disappeared and what will be shown in the film. He said that although he “cannot reveal the climax, it will not be a tragic climax.” The trailer, which also shows commotion and horror on the plane, has garnered more than 300,000 views on YouTube. Authorities still have not been able to locate the plane, which was carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 when it went missing. Paul is aiming for a September release.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency on Thursday named the religious affairs minister a suspect in a graft case involving a fund to help Muslim pilgrims go to the holy city of Mecca. Suryadharma Ali is just the latest high-level figure from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s outgoing government to be ensnared in a corruption case. Indonesia, which has the biggest Muslim population in the world, sends a huge number of people on the hajj, or pilgrimage, to Saudi Arabia every year and manages a fund for those making the journey. But the Corruption Eradication Commission launched an investigation after suspicious transactions worth 230 billion rupiah ($20 million) were detected in the fund. Commission spokesman John Budi said there was “alleged corruption in the hajj pilgrimage process between 2012 and 2013” and Ali had been named a suspect. He said the loss to the state was still being calculated but the government had paid out more than one trillion rupiah in those years to fund the hajj. Ali is the head of the United Development Party, which is an Islamic party. Other figures close to Yudhoyono -- who is standing down later this year after 10 years in power -- have been embroiled in graft cases, including the sports minister. Indonesia is ranked 114th out of 177 countries and territories in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index. A number one ranking represents the least corrupt.

JAKARTA - Political observer Arbi Sanit of the University of Indonesia said efforts were being made to tarnish the name of presidential candidate Joko Widodo (Jokowi) through an alleged corruption case in the procurement of Transjakarta buses. “There are political games behind the formation of the public opinion that Joko Widodo, who is running for president in the upcoming presidential elections, is involved in the corruption case,” Sanit stated on Saturday. He noted that efforts were being made to attack Jokowi through black campaigns. These efforts to tarnish the candidates good name became clear when Attorney General Basrief Arief pointed out that Jokowi was not involved in the Transjakarta bus procurement corruption case, adopting a firm stance that Sanit strongly praised.
So far, he added, a handful of people have been trying to drag Jokowis name into the Transjakarta corruption case, including Udar Pristono, former head of Jakartas Transportation Service, who is now a suspect in this case. Sanit believed that Pristono was trying to drag in the name of Jokowi because he intended to sabotage the career of his former boss, who is now contesting the coming July 9 presidential elections. On the other hand, Pristono is also being used by Jokowis political rivals to create a disadvantage for Jokowi as a presidential hopeful supported by
four political parties. “It is evident that some parties have tried to do this (damage Jokowis chances), and they could be successful because the competition in the run-up to the elections is getting increasingly tighter,” Sanit argued. Zetsche: Mercedes Formula 1 dominance criticism uncalled for
Mercedes insists it has no concerns that its Formula 1 dominance is proving to be a turn-off for fans. The German car manufacturer has won all five races so far this season, and the fact it has locked out all the victories is believed to have played a part in F1’s television audience showing declines in some key markets this season. But speaking at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Mercedes announced a long-term title sponsorship extension with fuel supplier Petronas, Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche believed criticisms that the sport was boring were uncalled for. “First of all we have seen four years in a row with one team winning the championship, and now we are talking about five races where one team has won,” he explained. “I heard fewer comments after four years about boring racing than I heard after five races - but perhaps the confidence is higher than we can continue this way, I don’t know. “In any case, my feeling is that many have expected Mercedes to succeed in this competition. Some were even surprised that it took us so long to be competitive, so I get a lot of positive response that we are there where people expected us before.” Zetsche insists the fact that the fight between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg has been so close is reason to believe F1 is delivering, plus there is a tight battle in the teams behind Mercedes. “It is very clear that we have two top notch drivers who are coming in after more than two hours of racing with a fraction of a second between them, which is unbelievable. “I think and we have seen that, certainly in Bahrain but not only there, that there is extreme fierce fighting between these two drivers for the number one position which in itself is a lot of excitement, for me sometimes more than I can bear, but for many people who are watching it as well. “On top of that we have a lot of position changes between the teams and within the teams. “And last but not least, I think it is not our task to take that issue on — it is the task of our competition. We will not try to help them, but we are aware that everyone will try to reduce and ultimately close this gap. We will not support that effort.”

Ray Allen added 16 points and led a late-game charge for the Heat, who lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Game 4 is Monday night in Miami.

The Heat trailed by 15 in the first half and never led until early in the third quarter. Paul George scored 17 points for Indiana, shooting 5 for 13 in his return after being concussed late in Game 2. Roy Hibbert scored 16 points, David West added 13 and Lance Stephenson had 10 for the Pacers. Miami started the game 2 for 10 from the floor. The Heat then made 21 of their next 31 shots, including eight straight in the third quarter that gave the two-time defending NBA champions their first lead. James’ dunk with 7:36 remaining in the third put Miami up for the first time, 52-51. That was the first of nine lead changes in the quarter, before the Heat did what coach Erik Spoelstra implored his team to do in a pregame locker room address. “Impose our identity,” Spoelstra said. Eventually, the message reached the Heat, and their two best players led the way.
James’ 3-pointer with 1:21 left in the third put Miami up 67-63, then its biggest lead of the night. Wade subbed in for James with 5.7 seconds left because the fourtime MVP was dealing with what appeared to be a hamstring cramp and connected on a 3-pointer with 1.4 ticks remaining for a 74-67 lead going into the fourth. James retreated toward the locker room at that point, stopping halfway down the hallway known as “Championship Alley” while trainer Mike Mancias stretched him out. Meanwhile, Wade — not exactly known for behind-the-arc prowess — opened the fourth quarter with another 3, the Heat were up 10 and the floodgates were opening. putting Miami up by 15. And with that, it became clear that Indiana was going to lose for the second time in Miami this season after leading by 15. It also happened on Dec. 18. The halftime score looked ugly: Pacers 42, Heat 38. That didn’t even come close to describing how much Miami struggled at times. Here’s one example: After 11 minutes, it was Hibbert 10, Heat 10. Indiana got nine points off turnovers in the opening quarter, led 19-5 with 2:42 left in the period and still held a 21-14 edge entering the second — even though Miami had just peeled off a 9-2 run to make things look at least somewhat respectable. James started the second quarter for just the seventh time in his 89 games played this season, a sign of how desperate the Heat seemed to not let the game become a total runaway.

that about 250 protesters took part in the demonstration which began outside the city’s Roman Catholic cathedral. After about two hours the protesters marched down nearby streets chanting “there will be no World Cup.” Protests over increases in bus and subway fares, government corruption, poor public services and
the billions of dollars spent to host the World Cup broke out last year in several cities. Protesters say the money would be better spent on improving Brazil’s health, education, security and infrastructure systems than on the soccer tournament. Several smaller protest rallies have taken place since then. The monthlong tournament starts with the June 12 opener in Sao Paulo.

LISBON - There was something magical surrounding this season’s Champions League showpiece even before Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid produced one of the great finals at Benfica’s Stadium of Light on Saturday. Spanish media estimated 100,000 people made the trip across the border to Lisbon but only around 40,000 of those had tickets to see Real beat Atletico 4-1 after extra time in the first final between two teams from the same city. “It was a special night, you could just feel something in the air,” Real manager Carlo Ancelotti told reporters of the memorable final littered with records. “I was not sure it was so magical when we were losing with time running out, but you felt something magical might happen in this stadium and in this city, and luckily for us it did.” It was the highest-scoring final since Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005 as Real became the first team to score four in a final since the Italians
beat Barcelona 4-0 in 1994. It was also the first final since Manchester United beat Benfica 4-1 in 1968 that a side had scored three times in extra time to win the European Cup after the game finished level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. Extra time was needed after Benfica’s Eusebio wasted a chance to win it with seconds remaining at the end of normal time at Wembley before United prevailed 4-1 to become the first English winners of the European Cup. A year earlier, in the only other final to be played in Lisbon before
Saturday’s match, Celtic became the first British team to win it when they beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the National Stadium. But while Celtic’s survivors of that night, known as the ‘Lisbon Lions’, were feted in the Portuguese capital this week, Eusebio’s absence was felt. The all-time great of Benfica and Portugal’s most loved player died earlier this year as did Mario Coluna, another pillar of the Benfica side that won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962 when they beat Real Madrid 5-3. That was one of the 13 European Cup finals Real have now taken part in and while Saturday’s eventually ended in glory with the elusive “La Decima”, or 10th victory, it followed a familiar pattern. History also repeated itself for Atletico, who suffered heartbreak in their only other final in 1974. Then they lead Bayern Munich 1-0 after Luis Aragones had given them the lead with a free-kick six minutes from the end of extra time. Like Eusebio and Coluna, Aragones also died earlier this year but he never forgot the anguish he felt as Munich’s George Schwarzenbeck equalised in the last minute of extra time to give Bayern a 1-1 draw before the Germans won the replayed final 4-0 two days later. went on to emulate Real and Ajax Amsterdam by winning a hat-trick of titles. Since then Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and AC Milan have won two successive European Cups, a feat no-one has achieved since Milan in 1989 and 1990 when current Real coach Carlo Ancelotti played in their wins over Steaua Bucharest and Benfica. Ancelotti made history of his own on Saturday by becoming the first man since Liverpool’s Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981), to win three European Cups as a coach. Ronaldo also became the first player to score in regular time for two different winning European Cup teams having netted Manchester United’s goal against Chelsea in 2008. That match eventually finished with United winning on penalties despite Ronaldo missing in the shootout. He made no mistake on Saturday for his 17th goal of this season’s competition, another record. It was that sort of night.
BARCELONA - It took Atletico Madrid 40 years to reach a second European Cup final and it might be a similarly long wait for a third appearance with wealthy clubs set to poach the La Liga champions’ key assets. A week after Diego Godin headed the goal against Barcelona that won them the La Liga title for the first time since 1996, the Uruguayan nodded in a corner against Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League in Lisbon. They looked set for a miraculous league and European double before Sergio Ramos equalised in the 93rd minute to force extra time and deflate Atletico, who collapsed to a 4-1 loss after the extra 30 minutes. The effects of a limited squad finally catching up with them against a blockbuster Real lineup, clearly fresher as the game wore on. The loss resembled their sole previous final appearance when they were denied victory in the 1974 European Cup final against Bayern Munich by a late equaliser before losing the replay 4-0. Despite their remarkable successes this season, they look ahead with an uncertain future with financial limitations making it a tough task to keep hold of their star names. The combative Diego Costa, who has been their talisman in attack this season with 36 goals, has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, while promising goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could join him at Stamford Bridge if an agreement to either extend his loan deal or sign him outright cannot be reached. Clubs have also cast admiring
glances at wingers Arda Turan and Koke, who is still only 22, and while Atletico were able to cope with the loss of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao last season, they are unlikely to be able to withstand any more purging. On top of that, Simeone’s squad is full of players aged around 30 - with youthful potential looking limited. as much as he could but boiled over in the final stages when he confronted Real defender Raphael Varane on the pitch. “Simeone experienced for the first time in his short career as a coach the bitter side of a final,” read Spanish daily Sport. Having wiped away the tears of disappointment, a defiant Simeone was convinced that Atletico can come back stronger. “I said to the players, the game today didn’t deserve tears because when you give your all you have to have your head held high,” the Argentina told reporters. “We were beaten having done our best. CARSON, California — Landon Donovan thought he had earned a prominent role on the U.S. World Cup team right up until the moment he was cut from the roster by coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Donovan was still stunned and confused by Klinsmann’s decision when he went back to work with the LA Galaxy on Saturday. “I’m disappointed. I’m sad,” Donovan said Saturday after the Galaxy’s practice. “I’m human, and I wanted to go. I really wanted to go. I’m at peace with it. I respect the decision. I just feel in my heart that I deserve to be there, and that’s the pill that’s hardest to swallow.” The 32-year-old attacker was denied the chance to play in his fourth World Cup after Klinsmann chose U.S. team newcomer Aron Johannsson and 31-year-old Chris Wondolowski over the most accomplished international player in American history. The decision surprised Donovan, who believed a strong performance in training camp had secured his spot on the 23-man roster. LISBON - There was something magical surrounding this season’s Champions League showpiece even before Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid produced one of the great finals at Benfica’s Stadium of Light on Saturday. Spanish media estimated 100,000 people made the trip across the border to Lisbon but only around 40,000 of those had tickets to see Real beat Atletico 4-1 after extra time in the first final between two teams from the same city. “It was a special night, you could just feel something in the air,” Real manager Carlo Ancelotti told reporters of the memorable final littered with records. “I was not sure it was so magical when we were losing with time running out, but you felt something magical might happen in this stadium and in this city, and luckily for us it did.” It was the highest-scoring final since Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005 as Real became the first team to score four in a final since the Italians
beat Barcelona 4-0 in 1994. It was also the first final since Manchester United beat Benfica 4-1 in 1968 that a side had scored three times in extra time to win the European Cup after the game finished level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. Extra time was needed after Benfica’s Eusebio wasted a chance to win it with seconds remaining at the end of normal time at Wembley before United prevailed 4-1 to become the first English winners of the European Cup. A year earlier, in the only other final to be played in Lisbon before
Saturday’s match, Celtic became the first British team to win it when they beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the National Stadium. But while Celtic’s survivors of that night, known as the ‘Lisbon Lions’, were feted in the Portuguese capital this week, Eusebio’s absence was felt. The all-time great of Benfica and Portugal’s most loved player died earlier this year as did Mario Coluna, another pillar of the Benfica side that won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962 when they beat Real Madrid 5-3. That was one of the 13 European Cup finals Real have now taken part in and while Saturday’s eventually ended in glory with the elusive “La Decima”, or 10th victory, it followed a familiar pattern. Then they lead Bayern Munich 1-0 after Luis Aragones had given them the lead with a free-kick six minutes from the end of extra time. Like Eusebio and Coluna, Aragones also died earlier this year but he never forgot the anguish he felt as Munich’s George Schwarzenbeck equalised in the last minute of extra time to give Bayern a 1-1 draw before the Germans won the replayed final 4-0 two days later. Since then Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and AC Milan have won two successive European Cups, a feat no-one has achieved since Milan in 1989 and 1990 when current Real coach Carlo Ancelotti played in their wins over Steaua Bucharest and Benfica. Ancelotti made history of his own on Saturday by becoming the first man since Liverpool’s Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981), to win three European Cups as a coach. Ronaldo also became the first player to score in regular time for two different winning European Cup teams having netted Manchester United’s goal against Chelsea in 2008. That match eventually finished with United winning on penalties despite Ronaldo missing in the shootout. He made no mistake on Saturday for his 17th goal of this season’s competition, another record. BARCELONA - It took Atletico Madrid 40 years to reach a second European Cup final and it might be a similarly long wait for a third appearance with wealthy clubs set to poach the La Liga champions’ key assets. A week after Diego Godin headed the goal against Barcelona that won them the La Liga title for the first time since 1996, the Uruguayan nodded in a corner against Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League in Lisbon. They looked set for a miraculous league and European double before Sergio Ramos equalised in the 93rd minute to force extra time and deflate Atletico, who collapsed to a 4-1 loss after the extra 30 minutes. The effects of a limited squad finally catching up with them against a blockbuster Real lineup, clearly fresher as the game wore on. The loss resembled their sole previous final appearance when they were denied victory in the 1974 European Cup final against Bayern Munich by a late equaliser before losing the replay 4-0. Despite their remarkable successes this season, they look ahead with an uncertain future with financial limitations making it a tough task to keep hold of their star names. The combative Diego Costa, who has been their talisman in attack this season with 36 goals, has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, while promising goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could join him at Stamford Bridge if an agreement to either extend his loan deal or sign him outright cannot be reached. Having wiped away the tears of disappointment, a defiant Simeone was convinced that Atletico can come back stronger. “I said to the players, the game today didn’t deserve tears because when you give your all you have to have your head held high,” the Argentina told reporters. “We were beaten having done our best. This means that we will grow from this. It puts us in a position to continue competing and the opposition know what they are up against.”

Zetsche: Mercedes Formula 1 dominance criticism uncalled for
Mercedes insists it has no concerns that its Formula 1 dominance is proving to be a turn-off for fans. The German car manufacturer has won all five races so far this season, and the fact it has locked out all the victories is believed to have played a part in F1’s television audience showing declines in some key markets this season. But speaking at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Mercedes announced a long-term title sponsorship extension with fuel supplier Petronas, Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche believed criticisms that the sport was boring were uncalled for. “First of all we have seen four years in a row with one team winning the championship, and now we are talking about five races where one team has won,” he explained. “I heard fewer comments after four years about boring racing than I heard after five races - but perhaps the confidence is higher than we can continue this way, I don’t know. “In any case, my feeling is that many have expected Mercedes to succeed in this competition. Some were even surprised that it took us so long to be competitive, so I get a lot of positive response that we are there where people expected us before.” Zetsche insists the fact that the fight between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg has been so close is reason to believe F1 is delivering, plus there is a tight battle in the teams behind Mercedes. “It is very clear that we have two top notch drivers who are coming in after more than two hours of racing with a fraction of a second between them, which is unbelievable. “I think and we have seen that, certainly in Bahrain but not only there, that there is extreme fierce fighting between these two drivers for the number one position which in itself is a lot of excitement, for me sometimes more than I can bear, but for many people who are watching it as well. “On top of that we have a lot of position changes between the teams and within the teams. “And last but not least, I think it is not our task to take that issue on — it is the task of our competition. We will not try to help them, but we are aware that everyone will try to reduce and ultimately close this gap. We will not support that effort.”

The Heat trailed by 15 in the first half and never led until early in the third quarter. Paul George scored 17 points for Indiana, shooting 5 for 13 in his return after being concussed late in Game 2. Roy Hibbert scored 16 points, David West added 13 and Lance Stephenson had 10 for the Pacers. Miami started the game 2 for 10 from the floor. The Heat then made 21 of their next 31 shots, including eight straight in the third quarter that gave the two-time defending NBA champions their first lead. James’ dunk with 7:36 remaining in the third put Miami up for the first time, 52-51. That was the first of nine lead changes in the quarter, before the Heat did what coach Erik Spoelstra implored his team to do in a pregame locker room address. “Impose our identity,” Spoelstra said. Eventually, the message reached the Heat, and their two best players led the way.
James’ 3-pointer with 1:21 left in the third put Miami up 67-63, then its biggest lead of the night. Wade subbed in for James with 5.7 seconds left because the fourtime MVP was dealing with what appeared to be a hamstring cramp and connected on a 3-pointer with 1.4 ticks remaining for a 74-67 lead going into the fourth. James retreated toward the locker room at that point, stopping halfway down the hallway known as “Championship Alley” while trainer Mike Mancias stretched him out. The halftime score looked ugly: Pacers 42, Heat 38. That didn’t even come close to describing how much Miami struggled at times. Here’s one example: After 11 minutes, it was Hibbert 10, Heat 10. Indiana got nine points off turnovers in the opening quarter, led 19-5 with 2:42 left in the period and still held a 21-14 edge entering the second — even though Miami had just peeled off a 9-2 run to make things look at least somewhat respectable. James started the second quarter for just the seventh time in his 89 games played this season, a sign of how desperate the Heat seemed to not let the game become a total runaway.

The announcement came on the heels of a security crackdown launched over the weekend in response to Thursday’s attack at a morning street market, which killed at least 43 people and wounded dozens. The official Xinhua News Agency said an anti-terrorism campaign in the northwest Xinjiang region would target religious extremist groups, underground gun workshops and “terrorist training camps,” and that “terrorists and extremists will be hunted down and punished.” Police have revealed the names of five people blamed for the attack and said they were part of a “terrorist gang.” Based on their names, all the suspects appeared to be Uighurs, the region’s most populous Muslim minority. Police said that four of the
assailants were killed in the bombing and that the fifth was captured Thursday night. In Sunday’s announcement, public security officials in Xinjiang said people involved in a range of designated terrorist activities would receive mitigated punishments if they turn themselves in within 30 days, Xinhua reported. The announcement also said those who surrender and offer information about other suspects or criminal activities “will be given minor punishment or exempted from punishment.” The
bombing in Urumqi, Xinjiang’s capital, left the region’s ethnic Chinese on edge and raised fears that organized extremism was on the rise. Ismail Tiliwaldi, a former governor of Xinjiang, said in an editorial posted on a website sponsored by regional authorities that the attackers “vainly attempted to attract attention through a large-scale bloody incident and maliciously sow ethnic estrangement and cause hatred and opposition to achieve their criminal plot of separating the country,” according to Xinhua.

security at Jewish houses of worship and other Jewish establishments, according to a statement Sunday. There were no immediate details on the Saturday night attack on two men leaving the synagogue in Creteil, southeast of Paris.
The attack came hours after a deadly attack on the Jewish Museum of Brussels that left three people, including an Israeli couple, dead and a fourth seriously injured. Belgian police have arrested a suspect and were searching for a second.
CANNES, France — The director of a movie based on the Malaysian Airlines plane disappearance says he rushed the trailer of the project so he could bring it to the Cannes Film Festival. “I was seeing the festival calendars and I could not miss Cannes. And so I told my team to make a trailer immediately,” said Rupesh Paul of his planned film, “The Vanishing Act.” It wasn’t until he arrived at the festival that he faced questions over the timing of the film’s promotion and whether he was being sensitive to the families of the missing passengers. “These things came in to my thoughts only after I came here,” said Paul, also a producer, in an interview on Saturday. “From the very first interview I was only asked about this fact that we did not even think of much when we were pitching this in India. Nobody asked this question in India actually. When we came to Europe this was the only question I faced.” The 35-year-old director says he never thought his actions might upset anyone but insists “that nobody will be hurt (by) this movie.” “Why should I gain out of somebody’s pain?” said Paul, who is also behind the movie “Kamasutra 3D,” which was shown to buyers at the festival. The trailer for “The Vanishing Act” shows two crew members kissing as a third looks at them angrily. It’s something the director says will not be included in the main feature. “This trailer was not even meant to get released on the Internet online,” said Paul. “It was meant to show some investors and producers that the movie will be dramatic and thrilling. Somehow it got released, we had to give it to many people, it got out of my hands. And there is no love triangle in this movie at all and there is no romance in this movie.” A handgun is also featured in the movie, but Paul said it isn’t what it seems. “Everyone that has flown once on even a small flight will definitely understand that it is impossible to carry a gun inside, whatever you do,” he said. “So it’s impossible, but there is a weapon in the story.” The director is keeping tight-lipped about his theory on how the plane disappeared and what will be shown in the film. He said that although he “cannot reveal the climax, it will not be a tragic climax.” The trailer, which also shows commotion and horror on the plane, has garnered more than 300,000 views on YouTube. Authorities still have not been able to locate the plane, which was carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 when it went missing. Paul is aiming for a September release.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency on Thursday named the religious affairs minister a suspect in a graft case involving a fund to help Muslim pilgrims go to the holy city of Mecca. Suryadharma Ali is just the latest high-level figure from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s outgoing government to be ensnared in a corruption case. Indonesia, which has the biggest Muslim population in the world, sends a huge number of people on the hajj, or pilgrimage, to Saudi Arabia every year and manages a fund for those making the journey. But the Corruption Eradication Commission launched an investigation after suspicious transactions worth 230 billion rupiah ($20 million) were detected in the fund. Commission spokesman John Budi said there was “alleged corruption in the hajj pilgrimage process between 2012 and 2013” and Ali had been named a suspect. He said the loss to the state was still being calculated but the government had paid out more than one trillion rupiah in those years to fund the hajj. Ali is the head of the United Development Party, which is an Islamic party. Other figures close to Yudhoyono -- who is standing down later this year after 10 years in power -- have been embroiled in graft cases, including the sports minister. JAKARTA - Political observer Arbi Sanit of the University of Indonesia said efforts were being made to tarnish the name of presidential candidate Joko Widodo (Jokowi) through an alleged corruption case in the procurement of Transjakarta buses. “There are political games behind the formation of the public opinion that Joko Widodo, who is running for president in the upcoming presidential elections, is involved in the corruption case,” Sanit stated on Saturday. He noted that efforts were being made to attack Jokowi through black campaigns. These efforts to tarnish the candidates good name became clear when Attorney General Basrief Arief pointed out that Jokowi was not involved in the Transjakarta bus procurement corruption case, adopting a firm stance that Sanit strongly praised.
So far, he added, a handful of people have been trying to drag Jokowis name into the Transjakarta corruption case, including Udar Pristono, former head of Jakartas Transportation Service, who is now a suspect in this case. Sanit believed that Pristono was trying to drag in the name of Jokowi because he intended to sabotage the career of his former boss, who is now contesting the coming July 9 presidential elections. On the other hand, Pristono is also being used by Jokowis political rivals to create a disadvantage for Jokowi as a presidential hopeful supported by

It was $38 billion in 1997 and around $25 billion in 2010. “It’s coming up but it’s nothing like it was in 1997,” he told The Associated Press. “Essentially, the ASEAN financial crisis led to a crisis of confidence with governments, a crisis of confidence in the private sector, and there hasn’t been enough investment or discussion or development of tools that allow risk-sharing to be used appropriately.” The five members he referred to were Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The other members are Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei. Groff said while private investors
assume risks, there are other types of risks that governments and financial institutions need to assume “and that hasn’t yet come into play as much as it needs to.” The region, which will launch next year a common market comprising 600 million people, needs to spend $60 billion yearly until 2020 to meet its infrastructure needs. But Groff said ASEAN currently spends only about half that. He said while there has been some progress in a number of countries in recent years in helping facilitate private investments in infrastructure by addressing legal and regulatory issues that restrict private participation, the process is not easy and takes time. There is a need to think about financing interest mechanisms, mechanisms to mitigate risks, developing bankable projects that attract private investments and bringing back home the region’s extra savings that have been invested
in low-yielding treasury bonds in the U.S. and Europe, he added. To bring back some of those funds, the ADB has helped develop the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund which began lending last year. Two infrastructure projects in Indonesia have been funded while more projects throughout the region are in the pipeline, Groff said. The fund is being managed by the ADB, with funding coming from ASEAN members and the bank. Indonesian Finance Minister Muhamad Chatib Basri said infrastructure is the “first priority” for his country after it had established political stability under outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. However, he said the “ main challenge in the future is not only sustainable growth but also shared growth.” Philippine Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said the region’s relatively young population, natural resources and its geographic location are factors that would contribute to growth. But to make sustainable growth a reality the “capital surplus region” has to make more infrastructure investments, he added.
PARIS - Once the preserve of the ultra-rich and celebrities, a flight on a private jet is now available for as little as 550 euros an hour, with technology and competition helping to bring down sky-high prices. A growing number of firms offering such flights have emerged in recent years, some employing online facilities to match global demand, thereby improving fleet efficiency and contributing to cheaper flights. Adam Twidell, chief executive and founder of PrivateFly, said there are more than 500 operators and over 2,500 individual aircraft in the European charter market alone, yet “over 30 percent of flights are flying empty, repositioning for their next charter”. His company has been seeking to reduce these empty flights by going online to match demand. Beyond the usual service of offering chartered jet flights, PrivateFly lists on its website what is known as “empty legs” -- a trip from a certain destination at a fixed date, but at a price that can be as much as 75 percent lower than regular rates. The price listed for a “empty leg” flight on a 7-seater from Bristol to Cannes is 3,630 pounds, less than half the regular price of 8,730 euros, according to the website. “When we launched in 2008, many people told me that people would never book a private jet online, but I’m pleased to say that we have disproved this many many times over,” said Twidell. In one single app booking last year, a client booked an itinerary worth $500,000 in Europe, which Twidell said demonstrated clients are comfortable using technology that provides them benefits. “Technology is playing a key role in matching supply and demand, driving more efficiency and giving the customer more transparency and greater cost-effectiveness -- this is very important to today’s private jet user and mirrors what has already happened in other travel sectors, such as airlines, hotels and car hire,” he added. Warren Buffett’s NetJets was the first to see an opportunity in the niche market, offering partial plane ownership to those who do not want to buy a jet outright. Launched in 1986, the company now has 700 planes in service, making it “the biggest fleet in the world, commercial airlines included”, it said. Some 3,700 people are partial owners and 3,900 others in the United States and Europe are holders of cards that entitle them to a certain number of flight hours every year. When a plane has broken down, there is no other solution unless one owns a second plane,” he said. Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Bombardier’s vice president for marketing of commercial aviation, said it translates to far greater sales for aircraft makers. On that account, Kusuma Wardani said on Saturday (May 24) that her party would soon conduct a thorough evaluation and visited the schools whose students did not pass the exam in order to know about the real problems. Even, the Bali Education Agency paid special attention to Buleleng having the highest number of students that did not pass the exam reaching 54 people. “We will come down to location directly and make a visit to schools in Buleleng. We are going to see the actual condition of the schools whose students did not pass,” she said. According to her, there were 9 high schools in Buleleng whose students did not pass the exam and most of those schools were away from urban areas. Meanwhile, in Karangasem there were 6 schools, Bangli (3 schools) and then in Jembrana, Tabanan and Klungkung respectively 1 school. “Most students that did not pass the exam are in Buleleng. Then, most of those schools are located far from urban areas,” she said. Some aspects becoming the subject matter of the evaluation would include the readiness of school infrastructure and readiness of the educators because no matter how good the education sys-
tem was, the learning process could not run smoothly without being supported by teacher’s competence. She said the failure of the 88 high and vocational school students in the national exam were not the results of the examination days only, but it had actually indicated the process starting in grade X, grade XI and grade XII. “In other words, the students have been evaluated since the grade X and grade XI, not only in the grade XII,” she said. Kusuma Wardani also called for the 88 high and vocational school students who did not pass should not be too disappointed because there was still a chance to take package C held in next August or if they insisted on getting a high school diploma they had to repeat in grade XII for a year and attend the national exam next year. “If they would like to attend the package C exam, we plan it to be held in August, but the schedule remains to be from central government. So, we have to inventory who will attend the package C exam. Besides, the students must also prepare themselves,” she said. She also expected parents and teachers to assist children and students who did not pass because they were perhaps psychologically somewhat depressed. “We hope parents, teachers and principals to provide full guidance so the students are not kept mentally depressed. They must be motivated. The students can still take the package C exam and continue their study to college,” she said. Separately, the Head of Bali Education Quality Assurance Agency (LPMP), Dr. Made Alit Mariana, also asked the
school authority whose students did not pass the exam to make a thorough evaluation. “The number of high and vocational school students who attended the national exam increased and those who did not pass also increased. This must become a note for the school in facilitating, learning, preparing students to master the competencies and improving their self-confidence in facing the national exam because it is an integral activity in the process of education,” he said. All the stakeholders related to education either the Education Agency in the provincial or county/municipality, the school, the Institute of Education for Teachers (LPTK), college and related parties were urged to make collaborative efforts among various agencies in preparing students for the exam. “We also have to educate as well as reassure parents, students and community to make the national exam process confidential. Thus, the result of national exam can really become a reference of the educational outcomes and national exam serves as a benchmark of student competency where the results can be used in the admission to the next level,” he said. As reported earlier, a total of 88 high and vocational school students did not pass the exam. This number increased compared to the amount last year only reaching 13 students. Of the 78 high school students who did not pass, they were mostly from social sciences program reaching 75 people, language program (1 people) and natural sciences program (2). In terms of distribution areas, the high school students who did not pass scattered in Buleleng (54 people), Karangasem (14), Bangli (6), Tabanan (2), Klungkung (1) and Jembrana (1). GIANYAR - Army chief of staff General Budiman reiterated army’s neutrality here on Saturday with regard to the next presidential election on July 9. “TNI’s (military) stance is clear. We are neutral,” he said after officiating at the opening of a “TNI Builds Village” civic program in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. He said TNI members may not side with any of the candidates that would compete in the election. This also applies to their families and with regard to them TNI will let them vote according to their conscience, he said. “We will let the vote according to their conscience. We will not lead them to choose a certain candidate,” he added. Asked if there was a special instruction for his personnel with regard to the election General Budiman said that the only instruction was for them to be neutral. Budiman meanwhile called on the people to participate in maintaining public order and security so that the election could go peacefully. “We appeal to the people who have a right to vote to help promote awareness that the presidential election is a democracy fiesta,” he said. He also called on the people to show their political maturity by not spoiling the event. “Do not spoil it with conflicts because the election is a peaceful means of electing a national leadership,” he said. One of the candidates in the election is retired lieutenant general Prabowo Subianto who is a former army’s special forces commander. His rival, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), meanwhile is a civilian who is currently governor of Jakarta.

It was held for 21 days starting from May 19 to June 8, 2014, in order to minimize traffic accidents and violations as well as congestion in the area of Denpasar. Chief of the Denpasar Police Traffic Unit, I Nyoman Nuryana, conveyed the concept of operation forwarded pre-emptive activities as much as 40 percent, preventive (40 percent) and law enforcement (20 percent). WASHINGTON — Confronting critics of his foreign policy, President Barack Obama will soon outline a strategy for his final years in office that aims to avoid overreach as the second of the two wars he inherited comes to a close. The president’s commencement address Wednesday at the U.S. Military Academy will come amid growing frustration in the White House with Republicans and other critics who contend that Obama has weakened America’s standing around the world and faltered on problems across the Middle East and in Russia, China and elsewhere. That criticism has mounted over the past year following Obama’s decision to pull back a military strike in Syria and his inability to stop Russia from annexing territory from Ukraine. A White House official said Obama would specifically address both situations, as well as the status of ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. The president is also expected to discuss how he views shifts in the counterterrorism threat from al-Qaida and other groups, according to the official, who insisted on anonymity to preview the president’s speech. Obama came into office vowing to end the lengthy American-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and seeking to keep a war-weary nation
out of unnecessary conflicts. The war in Iraq ended in the closing days of 2011 and the Afghan conflict will formally conclude later this year, though the White House is seeking to keep a smaller contingent of U.S. troops behind to train Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism missions. KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s critical presidential election got underway Sunday under the wary scrutiny of a world eager for stability in a country rocked by a deadly uprising in the east. While there were no immediate reports of fighting, pro-Russia insurgents were trying to block voting by snatching ballot boxes and patrolling polling stations. The vote was taking place three months after the ouster of the country’s pro-Russia leader, who was chased from power by months of protests triggered by his decision to reject a pact with the European Union and forge closer ties with Moscow. There were no immediate signs of clashes on Sunday after weeks of intense battles. But it also appeared little voting was taking place in the east: The regional administration in Donetsk said that only 426 out of 2,430 polling stations in the region were open Sunday, and none in the city of Donetsk, which has 1 million people. There was no voting in Luhansk, the center of the neighboring province, but some stations appeared to be open across the region, according to local officials. Polls have shown the 48-year old billionaire candy-maker Petro Poroshenko far ahead of the other 20 candidates, but short of the absolute majority needed to win in the first round, so a runoff set for June 15 is expected. TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — From the dusty soccer pitch, 11-year-old Maynor Ayala can see two ways out of the gangcontrolled slums: on a professional soccer team, or in a cheap coffin. Maynor is euphoric after scoring a goal for the first time in weeks, and he briefly allows himself to imagine going to the World Cup one day. But then his boyish smile fades into hard talk. “My cousin was shot here on the field,” Maynor says, miming a pistol with his thumb and index finger. “Remember the taxi driver they executed here a while ago?” asks his 14-year-old friend, Marvin Cruz. “We also went to see a body cut in pieces over there by the bridge,” Maynor adds. Their coach listens with despair. Luis Lopez, 45, who uses a wheelchair because of a bicycle accident over a decade ago, is working the kids hard, hoping the discipline of sport will keep them out of the gangs that dominate much of Tegucigalpa. His threadbare soccer program is modest compared to the challenges these children face: the pull of the streets, violence, poverty and drugs. But as for slum children from Brazil to Botswana, the game is also a lifeline. Maynor, Marvin and others on the pitch give the coach hope against the reality of pot smokers on the sidelines of the pitch and lost souls like 14-year-old Antony who don’t stay in school. Luisito is teaching boys and girls to play soccer, knowing that
the real game is to stay alive. Maynor may not know the statistics — that a child his age is shot to death every four days in Honduras, and that the odds only get worse as you get older. But he knows that violent death is common, and that the corpses offer a glimpse of his future if he moves toward the gangs. He goes to see the bodies, he says, “because you think that next time it could be you there.” Maynor’s neighborhood is called Progreso, a name that mocks its dirt roads, open sewage canals and crowded houses. It is surrounded by gang territories and an iron fence its 100 families put up to keep out criminals. Even so, children hide inside after dark. The soccer pitch is built on a graveyard of neighbors who were buried alive when Hurricane Mitch collapsed the hills in 1998. Jose de la Paz Herrera, known as “Chelato Ucles,” the godfather of Honduran soccer, stepped in with funds to help equip it. INKSTER, Michigan — The oldest-living American, a member of a select group of the living to have been born in the 19th century, has celebrated her 115th birthday. Jeralean Talley, who was born May 23, 1899, celebrated Friday as the secondoldest person in the world, according to a list maintained by the Gerontology Research Group, which tracks the world’s longest-living people. She went fishing last year and still gets around on her own with the help of a walker. On her birthday, Talley is going to the doctor for a checkup, although she says she doesn’t feel sick. The Michigan resident plans to celebrate with family and friends at a local church on
Sunday. Talley’s knees occasionally hurt, her right hand shakes, she has a hard time hearing and her memory comes and goes. Her answer as to why she has lived so long hasn’t changed over the years. “It’s all in the good Lord’s hands,” Talley told the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep. com/1r0fdRL ). “There’s nothing I can do about it.” The Gerontology Research Group verified Talley’s age using census data. Japan resident Misao Okawa, 116, is the world’s oldest person, according to the group. Talley, whose husband died in 1988, is cared for by a 76-yearold daughter who lives with her. Five generations of the family are living in the area, including a great-great-grandson.

Chinese visitors to Bali up Antara
DENPASAR - The number of Chinese tourists to Bali surged 50.17 percent to 151,058 in the first quarter of this year from 100,592 in the same period last year. Chinese tourists accounted for 18.09 percent of the total number of 835,099 visitors to Bali or the second largest after Australians that accounted for 24.84 percent. Tourism observer Dewa Nyoman Putra attributed the increase mainly to that country’s improved economic condition which grew 7.4 percent in the first quarter of the year. In addition, there are many national holidays in China in the first quarter of the year, including Chinese new year from January 31 to February 6 , Nyoman Putra said. Increase was recorded in the number of visitors from many other countries although decline was recorded in the number of visitors from Japan, Taiwan, Russia and Germany. The number of visitors from both Australia and China are dominant, but the highest growth was recorded in the number of visitors from China and Singapore. The number of visitors from Singapore grew 48.72 percent or the second highest growth after China. The trend is encouraging and could boost investment in the tourism sector in Bali, Nyoman Putra said. China is a potential market for Bali tourism especially with cultural similarities between Bali and China, he said. The central government as well as regional administration should fully utilize the favorable trend that Bali will continue to be the favorite tourist destination for Chinese, Nyoman Putra added.

DENPASAR - The tourism development in Bali does not only have a positive impact on local economies. Similarly, this sector also has negative impact such as environmental degradation and pollution, an increase in the number of crimes such as burglary and robbery, and prostitution. No doubt a number of tourism regions on the Island of the Gods are labeled as a place to look for prostitute or commercial sex workers (PSK) such as the tourism area of Sanur and Kuta. These destinations do not only present natural beauty, but also the nightlife. The visitors vary ranging from local communities to foreign travelers coming to Bali. In terms of religious perspec-
tive, the prostitution is prohibited and strongly opposed by the existence of all the religions in Indonesia. However, according to Chairman of the Center for Business Economic Data Analysis, the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, Dr. Sudjana Budhi, its existence could no longer be denied. It was inseparable from high demand for prostitution and should be addressed by increasing the supply of prostitution. Prostitution could be seen at various tourism areas in Bali. Some of them generally operated openly at roadside passed through by travelers, in bars, restaurants and karaoke. The closure of a number of localizations outside Bali would, one of which at Dolly, Surabaya,
result in exodus. Bali would be greatly affected by the closing of the localization because tourism was so close to entertainment and nightlife. “Proliferation of cafés in a number of cities and rural areas in the form of drink stalls will become potential market for the exodus of prostitutes at Dolly complexes reaching more than 1,000 people,” said Sudjana Budhi in Denpasar. Although Bali was not familiar with localization, but according to Sudjana Budhi, it did not mean if the social diseases in Bali due to promiscuity was lower than the cities having been known to have localization. “Instead, the hidden sex workers are much riskier to transmit venereal disease and other
social impacts,” he said. He argued the existence of dimly lit cafés should be demolished and governed by strict rules, so the exodus arising from the closure of a number of localizations did not damage, despite the existence of café was not prohibited item. “Dimly lit cafés and similar entertainment venues are not much different from the function of localization. It must be remembered that Bali becoming a cultural tourist destination must be free from the dimly lit cafés because the attraction of Bali lies in honesty and hospitality being different from Thailand,” he explained. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesia Congress and Convention Association (INCCA) Bali, IB Sur-
akusuma, previously said that sex tourism had obscured the development of cultural tourism of Bali and would even destroy tourism in Bali. “Advances of the world tourism development with the emergence of sex offer are indeed difficult to stop. The effort of investors offering this package will certainly obscure cultural tourism,” he said. To make Bali sustainable, the players of Bali tourism were not appropriate to merely follow the market demands by offering sex tourism. Government with security apparatus should detect and prevent the emergence of groups that offered sex tourism in Bali. “If these groups are not eradicated, the Bali tourism will be destroyed,” he said. Feared, prostitutes exodus amid closure of Dolly The closure of the prostitution complex in Surabaya is, touted as the biggest localization in Asia, Dolly, feared to result in exodus of prostitutes (commercial sex workers) to Bali. Possibly the exodus will also target a number of sordid places in Jembrana. Today it has started to be subtly felt in Jembrana. A number of nightclubs get new staff mostly consisting of women migrants from Java. They can easily be found in cafés and dimly lit stalls at Delod Berawah, Baluk village and other areas. The government is expected to immediately address this matter by sweeping the migrants, especially the nightspots frequently visited by men masher. Some of the café girls interviewed said if they came to Bali to make a living from entertainment. One of them, War, 19, was a girl who had just gradu-
ated from high school and immediately came to Bali as invited by her relative. Her family, including her parents, did not know that her job was not far away from liquor, cigarettes and free sex. He earned money from selling beer, chanting songs and sexy body wrapped in skimpy outfits. Rn who took her apparently had long got involved in such a profession. SINGARAJA - Vibrant opening of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) for the level of Buleleng County was held on Friday night (May 23) at the former Buleleng Harbor. Hundreds of people gathered to witness the event and it was also attended by the officials such as the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana, Deputy Regent Nyoman Sutjidra, Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency Ketut Warkadea and other officials in the ranks of the Buleleng County. The BAF of Buleleng took the theme ‘Kertamasa: the life dynamics of agrarian society leading to universal welfare.’ Such an activity took place smoothly for three days, on May 23-25, 2014. The open performance of Buleleng BAF posed the tryout session for the participants of the BAF before the event in the provincial level. On the first day, Regent Suradnyana witnessed the performance by the younger generation of Buleleng until the end of the show. The first stunning appearance was the presentation of gong kebyar by Santhi Budaya adult art troupe and classic angklung gamelan music by Bakti Kembang troupe of Buleleng. “I really appreciated the performance of BAF participants of Buleleng County level. Hopefully, the art and creativity could be displayed better, and many dances such as Jagung Gembal, exploring the philosophy of Ki Barak Panji Sakti came to Buleleng,” he said. The lack of funding from Buleleng government did not discourage the BAF participants. Even, it was able to drive the motivation to be more creative and perform optimally. “Well, that’s what we have, the budget of the Buleleng BAF is not as large as other counties, reaching about IDR 1 billion for the performance and development of several art studios in Buleleng. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CANNES, France — Gray, wispy-haired Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne are more than just brothers born three years apart. The acclaimed Belgian directors, whose film “Two Days, One Night” lit up this year’s Cannes Film Festival, are also two cogs in the same creative machine, first fused together by their opposition to their religious father and now incapable of working apart. “At the start we thought, practically, that if one is ill for a week, it’s good as the other can continue working. But this isn’t true. We need each other for it,” says Jean-Pierre, 63. Luc, 60, goes further. “It’s a little psychological. That we are brothers that work together, it’s linked to our father. We opposed him a lot together when we were growing up over his morality, religion. It cemented us more than we think,” he says. Whatever the reason, their cinematic synthesis has worked with great success — the duo already have two Palmes d’Or under their belt since they first teamed up in 1978. The first winner was 1999’s “Rosetta,” about a 17-year-old girl, played by first-time actress Emilie Dequenne, who tried to escape her alcoholic mother. The second was 2005’s “The Child” — a tale of an adolescent father who wants to give up his baby. But this year’s gritty “Two Days, One Night,” which features a tour-de-force performance by Marion Cotillard as Sandra — a desperate and depressed mother of two trying to save her job at a solar-panel factory — could well hand the brothers a record-breaking third.
The message of the film, in which Cotillard’s Sandra tries to convince her 12 co-workers to forfeit their 1,000 euro bonus to save her job, is at heart a philosophical exploration of human solidarity versus selfinterest. A similar philosophical strand runs throughout their body of work, which spans 10 features and numerous documentaries over four decades. And it’s little wonder. Luc studied philosophy, while Jean-Pierre took drama. The brothers’ work has never strayed far from home (or autobiography). Both the fraught father-figure and the setting of their hometown, the deprived Belgian city of Liege, recur within their work. The bond between father and child featured strongly in “The Child,” but also crops up in this year’s offering, in which a dad literally comes to blows with his son over whether or not they should give up the bonus selflessly. This time around the father is the virtuous character. “We at first wanted the son to say “Yes”, and the father “No” (to helping Sandra). But we didn’t want to condemn the father in the film this time. We’ve already condemned too many fathers in our films! We felt bad. It’s a father-rehabilitation,” says Luc.

BANGKOK - Public anger at the Thai military’s coup grew Sunday as more than one thousand protesters shouting “Get Out!” marched across the capital Bangkok in defiance of an army warning against protests. Demonstrators began marching in the Chidlom district and made their way across the city to the Victory Monument cheered by onlookers, an AFP reporter at the scene said, after a tense standoff with armed soldiers in the city’s retail heart. It was the largest expression of dissent since the army seized power on Thursday after months of political turmoil. There was no sign of soldiers or police on the streets during the march Sunday, which went ahead despite a junta statement calling on people not to protest and a martial law ban on gatherings of more than five people.
“I am not afraid of them because the more we are afraid of them, the more they will stamp on us,” protester Kongjit Paennoy, 50, told AFP. “We want an election -- to choose our own boss.” The military has detained former premier Yingluck Shinawatra and scores of other ousted government leaders and political figures since the coup, which brought sharp international criticism. “I ask for people’s understanding on the current situation and that they refrain from anti-coup rallies, because democracy cannot proceed normally at the moment,” said junta spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree Sunday morning, add-
