Madonna loses bid to stop auction of intimate items

NEW YORK - Madonna lost Monday a nearly year-long bid to stop an auction of intimate items, including a breakup letter from rap legend Tupac Shakur. A judge ruled that the Material Girl had directed her legal action against the wrong target in going after Darlene Lutz, a New York art dealer who helped Madonna build a collection before falling out with her. Lutz had been the main source for 22 items, including love letters, cassettes and a hairbrush, that were up for sale by auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll until a judge issued an injunction in July. New York Judge Gerald Lebovits, in a ruling based on narrow legal grounds rather than on Madonna’s claims of violations of privacy, agreed with Lutz, who said that her disputes with Madonna were settled by a 2004 legal agreement between the former friends. Lebovits, in a decision dated last week but made public Monday, also questioned why Madonna was pursuing Lutz and not the singer’s assistants, who Madonna said had handed items to the art dealer. “If plaintiff’s allegations are accepted as true -- that Lutz received the letters through inadvertent actions of the plaintiff’s assistants,” Lebovits wrote, then her case against Lutz is “time-barred and improper.” The auction house said it would press ahead in July with the sale of Madonna merchandise including the offending letter from Tupac. In a statement, Gotta Have Rock and Roll said it had been confident about the case and had done “substantial due diligence” before first announcing the auction. Judd Grossman, a lawyer for Lutz, called the court decision “a total win.” “Ms Lutz is now free to do with her property as she pleases without any continued interference by Madonna,” Grossman said. Indonesia oil well explosion kills 15, dozens injured

The death toll from an illegal oil well blaze in Indonesia has jumped to 15 with dozens injured, authorities said Wednesday, warning that there could be more victims of the explosion. Images from the accident showed a towering flame shooting some 70 metres (230 feet) in the air above homes and palm trees dotting a small community in Sumatra island’s Aceh province. Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon were still battling the blaze sparked by an oil spill at about 1:30 am (1830 GMT Tuesday) in a residential area. Several homes were also destroyed. “The number of fatalities now stands at 15 people,” said Syahrizal Fauzi, head of the local disaster

Saudi king to launch ‘entertainment city’

RIYADH - Saudi King Salman will launch the construction of an “entertainment city” near Riyadh Wednesday, authorities said, part of a series of multi-billion dollar projects as the kingdom seeks to diversity its oil-reliant economy. The 334-square kilometre project in Qiddiya, southwest of Riyadh, would rival Walt Disney and include high-end theme parks, motor sport facilities and a safari park, officials say. The facility highlights a “relentless effort to develop giga-projects that will help achieve many direct and indirect economic returns”, project official Fahd bin Abdullah Tounsi was quoted as saying in a government statement on Monday. Qiddiya chief executive Michael Reininger said he expects the project will draw foreign investors in entertainment and other sectors, but did not specify the total cost of construction. Such projects are the brainchild of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a self-styled liberal change agent who is the chief architect of the sweeping “Vi-

sion 2030” reform programme. Saudi Arabia has dazzled investors with several plans for hi-tech “giga projects”, funded in part by its sovereign wealth fund, but some sceptics question their viability in an era of cheap oil. The kingdom has unveiled blueprints to build NEOM, a mega project billed as a regional Silicon Valley, in addition to the Red Sea project, a reef-fringed resort destination -- both worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Analysts say the projects could create funding pressures at a time when the government faces a yawning budget deficit and growth in the kingdom’s non-oil economy is only slowly gathering pace. In various arts and performing events, the dance depicting the tradition of Makepung returns to be encouraged. Some time ago in a cultural parade, the dance was staged colossally with hundreds of dancers consisting of junior high and high school students. This contemporary dance created by I Ketut Suwentra or better known Grandpa Jegog first appeared in 1984. The dance became a final assignment to obtain baccalaureate degree in the Denpasar Art

College (ASTI). This dance reflects the agrarian culture of Jembrana especially the makepung attraction. Generally, this dance is played by around seven dancers consisting of three men and four women. The dancers have their respective roles describing the movement in the buffalo race. Four dancers serve as a wheel, a dancer as buffalo and respectively a dancer as coachman and buffalo rider. Movement of this contemporary dance tends to be different from the dances in general. The dancer who plays buffalo, for instance, shows dance movement like a walking, drinking and bathing buffalo and

Makepung Dance depicts buffalo races with Jegog accompaniment others expressed through the graceful dance movement. In terms of their costumes, the female dancers generally put on a number of accessories used by buffalo while competing, including rustling bells mounted on the legs. ANZAC Day Commemoration 2018

Beer breath: Drinking alcohol may give you more than bad breath DRINKING alcohol can give you more than strong breath — it may mess up the balance of good versus bad bacteria in your mouth, researchers reported Monday. That, in turn, can raise the risk not only of gum disease and cavities, but also of cancer and heart disease, they said. Their findings, published in the journal Microbiome, could help explain why people who drink more may die younger than people who drink less, and why drinking can cause cancer. “Our study offers clear evidence that drinking is bad for maintaining a healthy balance of microbes in the mouth and could help explain why drinking, like smoking, leads to bacterial changes already tied to cancer and chronic disease,” Jiyoung Ahn, an epidemiologist at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, said in a statement. “My report provides another scientific rationale for avoiding excessive alcohol drinking,” she added in a telephone interview. Drinking alcohol kills off many “good” bacteria, and allows some potentially harmful bacteria to flourish in the mouth, they found. “Such changes potentially contribute to alcoholrelated diseases, including periodontal disease, head and neck cancer, and digestive tract cancers,” the team wrote. Although people who drink lightly to moderately appear healthier than people who don’t drink at all, more and more studies are starting to show that even moderate drinking can damage health. Drinkers are more likely to develop a range of cancers, as well as heart disease, and alcohol’s stress on the liver is well known. Heavy drinkers also notoriously can lose teeth and develop gum disease. Ahn’s team set out to determine whether some or all of these various types of damage are due to alcohol’s effect on the microbiome in the mouth. Microbiomes are the collection of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast and viruses, that live in and on our bodies. BANGLI - Large number of garbage accumulating along the road in Abang Batudinding to Terunyan village, Kintamani, is very much deplored by Deputy Regent of Bangli, Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta. Seeing that condition, he asked all the local people to be more aware so as not to litter, but take care to keep the environment clean and sustainable. Sedana Arta revealed he knows there is a lot of garbage scattered on the roadside after crossing the path a few days ago. He saw a lot of garbage accumulating at some points along the road. Such condition is also considered to make the area look shabby. “There is a lot of garbage scattered there, not only plastic waste, but also organic waste scattered so that it makes the location look very dirty due to the piles of garbage,” he said recently. This official from Sulahan Susut hoped people not to throw garbage carelessly again and follow to keep the environment clean. So, along the path can be clean and free from

FOR people whose blood pressure rises when measured at the doctor’s office — a condition known as “white coat hypertension” — there may be a real reason to worry, new research shows. White coat hypertension, which may affect up to 30 percent of Americans, occurs when the blood pressure reading at the doctor’s office is higher than it is when checked at home or other settings. It was once thought that it was just the temporary stress of being at the doctor that caused a spike and that it didn’t indicate a bigger problem. But the risk of death was nearly twice as high for patients with

white coat hypertension, compared to patients whose blood pressure is normal when taken at the doctor’s office and at home, the report published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday shows. “White-coat hypertension is not benign,” said Dr. Haitham Ahmed, medical director of cardiac rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic, who was not a part of the study. “If seeing a white coat increases your blood pressure, a lot of other stressors in life are expected to as well.” Researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid, who followed 64,000 people over five years, concluded that blood pressure measurements taken at home

Head of the Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, said on Tuesday (Apr. 24) that since the beginning, Tabanan indeed targeting the achievement of JE immunization for 100 percent or achieve all the targets specified by the Ministry of Health even though the ministry itself targeted the JE immunization for Bali is 95 percent. Related to the exceeding percentage of achievement, Suratmika said it means that Tabanan managed to cover the real data in the field. This indicates the officers work harder in reaching the children of age

He estimated there are still children having not been immunized for some reasons, such as of being sick, traveling and family remaining to reject the JE immunization for their children. For instance, it can cause hypersensitive, carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effect in animals or humans. “Carcinogens are substances that cause cancer, so that it is very dangerous for humans,” he said. He said this use does not have negative impact on humans provided that 14 days before slaughtering the AGP administration is stopped, so there is no residue in the animal. “However, what happens in the field is that breeders are frequently not disciplined where they continuously give this antibiotic before slaughtering. Definitely, the residue on meat will be risky if consumed by humans. Therefore, the use of antibiotics is prohibited,” he explained. A lecturer of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, Ketut Anom Dada, previously said that many fodders are indicated to contain harmful ingredients such as antibiotics and growth hormones. Both ingredients are equally hazardous if the animals are later consumed by humans. Actually the use of antibiotics is to cure diseases, surely with a certain dose. Inuka, first polar bear born in the tropics, is put down SINGAPORE - Inuka, the first polar bear born in the tropics, was put down Wednesday after a rapid decline in health, with Singapore Zoo mourning the loss of one of its best-loved animals. The bear, whose name means “Silent Stalker” in Inuit, had reached the grand old age of 27 -- into his 70s in human years and two years older than the average lifespan of the creatures in captivity. Born at the zoo, Inuka was particularly popular with visitors due to his playful antics in his enclosure. But in recent years the animal had suffered age-related ailments, including arthritis, and an examination at the start of this month revealed his health was failing markedly. His weakened limbs had trouble supporting his body and he developed cuts on his paws and a wound on his abdomen. After a final check-up, vets found that Inuka’s health had not improved despite intensive treatment and decided not to revive him from anaesthesia. “Singaporeans have known Inuka from the time he was a cub, and have seen him growing up and ageing,” said Mohan Ponichamy, one of his keepers.

“It has been a privilege and honour being his care giver, but difficult as it may be, it would not have been fair to prolong his suffering.” The bear had been put on a “seniors programme” at the zoo for the past five years, to help elderly animals deal with the effects of ageing. He had slowed down in recent months, and became less interested in his daily playing sessions. Inuka was born on December 26, 1990. His father Nanook was caught in the wild and came from Canada and his mother, Sheeba, came from a German zoo. His death marks the end of an era for the zoo, which has said it will not keep any more polar bears in its collection. As few as 22,000 polar bears are thought to remain in the wild, according to environmental group WWF. Protection group the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as a vulnerable species. They are typically found in places with cold climates such as Greenland, and parts of Canada and Russia -- making Singapore, where daytime temperatures rarely dip below 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), an unusual location for the creatures to live. According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gambier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut). She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes. “Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said. She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small

Canada van massacre driver charged with murder, most victims women

TORONTO - A Canadian man who apparently had a grudge against women was charged with murder Tuesday after allegedly plowing a rented van onto a crowded Toronto sidewalk, killing 10 people -- an incident that shocked the nation. Police said the suspect, 25-yearold Alek Minassian, was not known to them before Monday’s carnage in Canada’s most populous city, which also left 14 people injured. Most of the victims were women. Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale played down any suggestion that the attack bore the hallmarks of those carried out by truck-driving extremists in London, Nice and other cities, saying “there is no discernable connection to national security.” But authorities said the incident during the busy lunch hour Monday was undoubtedly deliberate. A top investigator for Indonesia’s powerful Corruption Eradication Commission was partially blinded in a 2017 acid attack as he was heading the probe into the case involving Novanto and others. No one has yet been arrested. The verdict comes several years after the former chief justice of Indonesia’s constitutional court, Akil Mochtar, was jailed for life for accepting bribes to issue favourable decisions in local election disputes. It was the country’s heaviest-ever sentence for corruption. Novanto, who dodged questioning by the anticorruption agency for months, was arrested in hospital in November after he claimed to have been injured in a car crash. The reported accident came shortly after a failed raid on his palatial estate. Indonesia’s graft buster subsequently charged Novanto’s then-lawyer and doctor with obstructing justice over allegations they booked a hospital room for the supposedly injured politician before his purported car accident happened. Novanto had been forced to quit as speaker in 2015 after he was caught on tape trying to extort a stake in the Indonesian unit of US mining giant FreeportMc-

MoRan in exchange for extending the company’s right to operate in the archipelago. He was later cleared and reappointed as speaker in 2016. He quit again last year after the most recent charges were laid. (afp)

The reigning NBA champions, jolted by the Spurs in game four on Sunday, booked their place in the next round with a nervy 99-91 win in front of the home fans at the Oracle Arena. STUTTGART - Maria Sharapova crashed out in the opening round of the Stuttgart Grand Prix on Tuesday as French sixth seed Caroline Garcia staged a fightback to win 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4. “This was not the result that I wanted, but I can take a lot out of this match,” Sharapova said. “I’ve not competed for a few weeks, but I played pretty solid and did all of the right things. “I served well in the first set but had a few doubles at the wrong time. Salah superb but five-star Liverpool give Roma lifeline Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp labelled talisman Mohamed Salah a “genius” as the Egyptian came back to haunt former club Roma in spectacular style with two goals and two assists in a 5-2 semi-final, first-leg demolition of the Italians at Anfield. However, Liverpool’s night was soured by the concession of two late away goals and a serious injury to midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that looks set to end his season and World Cup chances with England. Roberto Firmino also scored twice and Sadio Mane netted Liverpool’s other goal to make up for missing a series of giltedged chances as the scoreline did anything but flatter the hosts. “He’s outstanding, pretty much you can’t defend (against him),” said Klopp of Salah. “The first goal is a genius strike. He scored already a few like this and that makes it even more special because it makes it no coincidence.” Roma produced one of the finest comebacks in Champions League history by overturning a 4-1 first-leg deficit against Barcelona in the quarter-finals. They will need to do the same in the return leg on May 2, but the visitors were at least given a lifeline when Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti grabbed two vital away goals in the final 10 minutes. “This reaction is welcome because we give meaning to the return match,” said Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco. “This was the first semi-final for Roma after three decades, we are not used to playing this level of opposition but this tie is not over. Fourteen years on from Arsenal’s last Premier League title, for so long Wenger could defend his record by consistent qualification for the Champions League. However, a 19-year run in Europe’s premier club competition came to an end this season and Arsenal’s only chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is by winning the Europa League. To do so, though, Wenger will need to achieve something that he couldn’t even manage in his peak years in charge -- win a European trophy. His two final losses in the 2000 UEFA Cup to Galatasaray and against Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League, allied to a Cup Winners’ Cup final defeat by Werder Bremen when manager of Monaco in 1992, handed him the ignominy of being the only manager ever to reach the finals of all three European club competitions and lose every one. Winning three FA Cups in the last four years did little to appease Arsenal fans’ demand for change. However, Wenger’s legacy will be

looked on far more kindly if be could bow out in his homeland next month in Lyon by guaranteeing Champions League football for his successor. “I’m happy now we can all talk about his legacy and let’s not forget that we still have to win the Europa League,” said Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer Thierry Henry on the day Wenger announced his departure. “Let’s not get lost in celebrating the end of his era. Quarter of a century on from giving French football its crowning moment in Europe, Marseille are dreaming of continental glory once again. But the club that won the inaugural Champions League in 1993 -- still the only time the European Cup has been won by a French side -- must first come through a semi-final against Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg, with the first leg at the Velodrome on Thursday. If Marseille can win before a sellout crowd of more than 60,000 on Thursday night (kick-off 1905 GMT), it will set them up to finish the job in next week’s return and keep them on course to make a final that will be played in France, at the home of their bitter rivals Lyon. Given that Atletico Madrid and Arsenal meet in the other semi-final, Marseille cannot be seen as favourites to lift the trophy. Nevertheless, the rousing 5-2 win over RB Leipzig in the second leg of the quarter-final at the Velodrome confirmed that they are a club on the up again under Rudi Garcia. The former Lille and Roma coach has spearheaded Marseille’s revival on the field since American tycoon Frank McCourt’s takeover of the club in late

Police have arrested a man following a “serious assault” ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma at Anfield on Tuesday. A Liverpool supporter was attacked by Roma hooligans before the match, which ended in a 5-2 win for the Premier League club. Merseyside Police said in a statement: “We can confirm a man has been arrested following an assault near to the Albert public house earlier this evening. “He has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives. “The 53-year-old victim is currently being treated for his injuries.” There were clashes between Liverpool and Roma supporters shortly before kick-off. Around 80 Roma fans are thought to have used a side road to reach an area populated by Liverpool supporters just outside their Anfield stadium. One man was seen motionless on the road and BBC Sport footage showed another fan carrying a hammer amid reports Roma supporters used belts as weapons.
