Red Bull is expecting the remainder of the Formula 1 season to be just as unpredictable as the first four races. Four teams have taken wins already this year, with reigning champion Sebastian Vettel bouncing back from a tricky start to the year to hold off Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus for victory in a thrilling race in Bahrain on Sunday. But rather than believe that Vettel’s victory marks the start of a resurgence of form for Red Bull, team principal Christian Horner reckons that regular success in 2012 is going to be hard for anyone to achieve. “I think this season is going to ebb and flow,” he said. “It is going to be about being consistent in races you can’t win

and taking the maximum out of them. And in the races that you can win you need to deliver. “I am sure with this championship, with 16 races to go, we are going to see a lot more variation. And to predict the Bahrain performance just a week after what happened in China would have been tricky.” Horner added that Red Bull is slightly surprised to be in the lead of both championships at this stage of the campaign, but he believes that is proof of the importance of consistency this year. “We’ve consistently managed to be scoring points in the first four races,” he said. “We have had four fourth places with Mark [Webber] and a second, a first, a fifth and an 11th [with Vettel]. “That puts us in the lead of both the

drivers’ and the constructors’ championship after the flyaways, which was not what we were expecting after the first couple of races. So it just shows if you concentrate on your teamwork that it can pay dividends.” Vettel’s victory in Bahrain came just a few days after the German said he was sceptical about his team’s chances of a win without improvements to the car. When asked what changed over the weekend, Horner said: “We’ve made a bit of progress here so this weekend it’s a different track and different conditions. “In all honesty coming here I thought it might be a circuit that didn’t play to our strengths. “We’ve now got the chance of a small respite with a test in Mugello, and we can look at the data from these first four races and see what we’ve learned from them.”

Tourism as one of the leading sectors of Bali seems to have not fully been enjoyed in the same degree by Balinese people, although the actual growth of Bali tourism sector is considered capable of providing enormous hope for improving the welfare of Balinese people.

According to one of the tourism observers, Dr. I Nyoman Madiun, the distribution and equity of tourism so far had not run maximally. Undeniably, most of Bali tourism was only centralized in Southern Bali region. He added the unequal distribution of tourists coming to Bali automatically caused the increase in tourism facilities to be more focused in the areas frequently visited by tourists and investors like Southern Bali. By all means, it would lead to saturation, not only for tourists but also investors in Bali. In other words, if the tourism sector was not professionally managed, it would

be very dangerous in the future. “Persistent addition of tourism facility without quality assurance will lead to a great competition. In this regards, many parties will be disadvantaged. Other than tourists are uncomfortable, the employers will probably no longer be benefited and ultimately both tourists and investors will leave Bali,” he explained. Procurement of X-Ray device planned to be installed at Padangbai and Gilimanuk was strongly criticized by the lineup of Bali House. Yet, we among the legislators certainly agree if the device must be installed permanently so as not to be easily removed. The form must be clearly like the gate existing in the airport,” he said while adding there should be clarity whether the device was made in Germany, the United States or Australia. of the Bali House, Kadek Nuartana. He also agreed if the X-Ray device could be installed permanently. In the near future, he also wanted the winning bidder and relevant agencies such as the ULP and the Office of National Union and Politics (Kesbangpol) as the leading sectors could be immediately summoned to present the device. Such presentation would be used as the basis of subsequent monitoring and checking whether the goods procurement had been in appropriate with specification. “The winning bidder should present the device in details to the House so that if one time we make a site inspection we can know the drawbacks of the aspects ever presented,” he said. This is because after the fogging, the Dengue patients actually increased such as at Tukad Pancoran, BTN Sanggulan, Tabanan, where 15 of its residents rushed to hospital almost in the same time since five days ago. The condition cause worries to a number of hospitals including Tabanan Public Hospital. The victims age varied yet with worst hit married couple Putu Astina (47) and Ni Komang Dian (37) who got it almost at the same time and several days after their area was fogged. Putu Astina was known first to have high temperature and checked to be positive Dengue then three days later his wife too. There was also Junior High School

According to his mother, Ni Ketut Suryani, this is the first time its area got Dengue with almost all of the residents got it. The Hospital Public Relation, Suarjaya, explained until Tuesday (24/4) there are 18 patients hospitalised with 11 positive dengue while others suspect and most from Sanggulan. Head of Tabanan Health Agency, dr. Nyoman Suratmika, stated the total of Dengue victims up to April reached 20 people, not only at Tabanan Public Hospital but also at Health Community Centres and other hospitals. Quarreling, a couple slashed to death

Residents around the Jalan Dukuh Sari, Sesetan, South Denpasar, were in commotion Tuesday (Apr 24). It was triggered by an incident of murder accompanied with a suicide in a house located at Gang Banteng 4. The couple naming Herni Susilowati, 28, and Sugianto, 33, died tragically. Neck of the couples suffered a slash injury. Allegedly, the neck of Susilowati (wife) was first slashed by Sugianto (husband). As soon as she died, her husband then committed a suicide by slashing his throat. Local residents found the two bodies at different locations. Body of Susilowati was found on the floor, while the body of Sugianto reclined in the bathroom. As information compiled at the scene, the incident took place around 5:00 p.m. local time. Previously, Sugianto was chatting with his brother, Bokir (owner of the screen printing at the scene), while drinking coffee next to his room. Later on, having chatted for quite long time, his brother continued his work in the screen printing. Meanwhile, the victim Sugianto came into his room. “The victim chatted with his brother around 12:00 a.m.,” said the key witnesses Aris and Novi. Well, not long after, the two witnesses heard a shout from inside the victim’s room. Since the door was closed, they broke

it. Witnesses saw the victims were covered in blood in the room. “His wife was lying on the floor, while her husband was leaning against the bathroom door,” he explained. Knowing this, witnesses and local residents tried to help. “His wife had died at the scene, while her husband was still breathing and in critical condition. We carried him out of the room. However, when arriving outside, he finally died,” he said. To follow up, local residents immediately reported the case to police station. Other information obtained by Bali Post at the scene last Tuesday told that Sugianto was said to look different within the past six months. He said to be in stressed condition, but the cause was unknown. Due to such condition, Sugianto had disappeared for one day without leaving any message. “Sugianto just came home this morning (Tuesday—Ed). He was accompanied by someone,” said a resident living near the scene. Sugianto’s arrival made his wife angry. Thus, prior to the murder and suicidal incident, they had quarreled. However, their noise was successfully suppressed by their families. “They had a quarrel. At that time, all the families came to the victim’s room and gave advice. NBA disciplinary officials slapped Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace with a seven-game suspension for a vicious elbow to the head of Oklahoma City guard James Harden. Nou Camp heroics write new page in Chelsea’s Roman era

LONDON - Whatever happens in the Champions League final in Munich next month, Chelsea’s astonishing 3-2 aggregate win over Barcelona’s artisans at the Nou Camp in Tuesday’s semi-final will go down as one of the club’s greatest achievements. Playing with 10 men for twothirds of the game after a moment of madness by captain John Terry, they survived a siege by the Catalans before 50-million-pound ($80.75-million) striker Fernando Torres, a native of Madrid, made up for months of failure with a late goal to seal a 2-2 draw on the night and an unlikely 3-2 aggregate victory. Such were the heroics of Chelsea’s patched-up defence and Barca’s obsession with trying to tiki-taka their way through a wall of white, that Torres’s goal was not actually required as his side were already edging through on away goals. British newspapers plastered Torres’s beaming face all over their back pages on Wednesday under headlines such as ‘Magnifico’ and ‘Miracle Men’. On the night, however, it was a sublime goal on the stroke of halftime from Ramires, just after Barca had gone 2-0 ahead, that proved pivotal. The goal allowed Chelsea, playing in a kit not unlike the white of Real Madrid, to revert to a trenchwarfare mentality that had served them so well. Torres’s breakaway goal, after he came on as a substitute, capped a night of enthralling drama that was all too much for Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville, part of the Manchester United side that snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on another epic Nou Camp night. As Torres galloped clear with

After a season that has threatened to be one of the worst in recent memory for Chelsea and was predicted to be the last for many of the club’s old guard such as Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard, the club are now one win from greatness. Such has been Lady Luck’s influence on Chelsea’s season since Andre Villas-Boas was sacked by owner Roman Abramovich and replaced by caretaker coach Roberto Di Matteo, that they could probably field the kit manager and the tea lady in Munich and still have a chance of winning the trophy for the first time. Abramovich has hired the game’s highest-profile coaches to deliver silverware, with varying

degrees of success, but bizarrely it is stop-gap Di Matteo who may hold the key to the Champions League trophy the Russian billionaire craves most. Di Matteo’s first Champions League game in charge was the quarter-final second leg at home to Napoli when his side trailed 3-1 from the first leg. Chelsea took the second leg into extra time and won 4-1 to go through. The Italian got lucky in the Premier League with two offside goals allowed in a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic and in the FA Cup semi-final when Juan Mata scored a goal against Tottenham Hotspur that clearly had not crossed the line. In the two legs against Barca, Chelsea were saved by the woodwork on several occasions while Messi, a player with 63 goals in all competitions this season, inexplicably failed to break his duck against the London club. The moment the Argentine’s penalty crashed back off the crossbar early in the second half Chelsea must have believed fate was on their side, a belief reinforced when Messi fired a shot against the post as the minutes ticked down. Chelsea still face a battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League and may have to win the Champions League to qualify for next season’s competition. After surviving all Barcelona could throw at them for three hours in London and Catalonia, however, few would bet against Abramovich’s quest ending in glory next.

However, we should break the laws. Currently, Benoa is the only marine tourist destination having owned a gas station, while the others are not,” said Yos in Denpasar Tuesday (Apr 24). He said the letter delivered to central government would be addressed to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. It would ask the government to provide fuel because the marine tourism as one of the destinations of Bali tourism had never received serious attention from the government. “We are never given attention by the government, where we can get fuel is not clear. Moreover, the new regulation related to restriction of subsidized fuel surely makes us confused because it only regulates the land tourist transportation, while the marine tourist transport does not. LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Swiss scientists have demonstrated how a partially paralyzed person can control a robot by thought alone, a step they hope will one day allow immobile people to interact with their surroundings through so-called avatars. Similar experiments have taken place in the United States and Germany, but they involved either able-bodied patients or invasive brain implants. On Tuesday, a team at Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne used only a simple head cap to record the brain signals of Mark-Andre Duc, who was at a hospital in the southern Swiss town of Sion 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. Duc’s thoughts — or rather, the electrical signals emitted by his brain when he imagined lifting his para-

lyzed fingers — were decoded almost instantly by a laptop at the hospital. Hong Kong to return rare Philippine turtles Agence France Presse

Thirty-six turtles seized from smugglers, including 20 of one of the world’s rarest species, are to be returned from Hong Kong to the Philippines, an official said Wednesday. It will mark the first time a protected Philippine species seized from the illegal wildlife trade abroad has been returned, Philippine environment department deputy chief Luz Corpuz told AFP. Wildlife authorities in Hong Kong will hand the 20 pond turtles and 16 South Asian box turtles to Philippine enforcement officers on Friday, she said. “They are Philippine species, and returning them back to their natural habitat is a big accomplishment for our conservation efforts,” Corpuz said of the Philippine pond turtles, which are found only in the island of Palawan.

Christopher Nolan’s latest Batman flick features an injured Bruce Wayne leaning on a cane, Anne Hathaway in red lips and a leather body suit as Catwoman, and a Gotham City football game interrupted by explosions and mayhem. Nolan unveiled footage from “The Dark Knight Rises” on Tuesday at CinemaCon, a Las Vegas conference for theater owners. The various scenes showed collapsing bridges, rolling army tanks and Christian Bale returning as an older, more weathered Batman. Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are also reprising their previous roles in the franchise. Nolan, known on set as “the governor,” said he wanted to finish his interpretation of the classic Batman story “in the biggest way possible.” “We’ve been working on this story for nine years,” he said. “And so it’s with mixed feelings that we finish this thing.” Nolan said his goal was to create a “spectacle” that makes viewers excited the moment they enter a theater. “What defines cinema, and what gets people out of the house to watch it, is spectacle,” he said. Brown wanted to keep most of the surprises on the band’s follow-up to 2010’s “You Get What You Give” under wraps in a Tuesday afternoon phone interview. He said the group has added Daniel de los Reyes, a percussionist who’s worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, Sting and Jennifer Lopez among others. His addition to the already existing rhythm section of bassist John Driskell Hopkins and drummer Chris Fryar has allowed the band to expand its sound into new territory. For instance, Trombone Shorty and the New

Orleans star’s horn section will make a guest appearance on “Overnight,” ZBB’s first shot at straight-up R&B. “They’ve really got to be smart about how they play so it doesn’t get too busy,” Brown said of the band’s rhythm section, “but it really creates a new kind of pulse within the band.” Finding that pulse was an important part of the new album. Brown said a tour through England with Kings of Leon got the band thinking about arrangements and finding the groove — then sticking with it. Band members also riffed on their mutual love of U2, looking for songs that resonates in arenas and stadiums. “It’s really about making people dance,” Brown said. “You just don’t let them go. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Annan says Syria situation ‘unacceptable’ Associated Press Writer

UNITED NATIONS — Diplomats said international envoy Kofi Annan is telling the U.N. Security Council that the situation in Syria remains “unacceptable” and is expressing particular alarm at reports that government troops entered the central city of Hama firing automatic weapons. The council diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because Annan’s videoconference briefing on Tuesday was closed, quoted Annan as saying the overall situation is also “entirely contrary to the will of the international community.” Annan said that if the government firing in Hama on Monday is confirmed, “this is reprehensible and unacceptable,” according to the diplomats. They said Annan told the council that promises to implement his sixpoint peace plan must be kept. He said it was necessary to get U.N. observers positioned quickly, saying: “We need eyes and ears on the ground, able to move quickly and freely.”

Pakistan successfully test fired a nuclear-capable intermediate range ballistic missile on Wednesday, the military said, less than a week after India test launched a long range missile. The exact range of the missile was not revealed, but retired General Talat Masood, a defence analyst, told AFP it would be able to hit targets up to 2,500 to 3,000 kilometres (1,550 to 1,850 miles) away -- putting arch-rival India well within reach. On Thursday India test fired its long range Agni V missile, which can deliver a one-tonne nuclear warhead anywhere in China. “Pakistan today successfully conducted the launch of the intermediate range ballistic missile Hatf IV Shaheen-1A weapon system,” the military said in a statement. India and Pakistan -- which have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947

-- have routinely carried out missile tests since both demonstrated nuclear weapons capability in 1998. Pakistan’s last missile test came last month with the launch of the short-range nuclear-capable Abdali. Wednesday’s missile, which landed in the sea, was a version of the Shaheen-1 with improvements in range and technical parameters, the military said, and can carry nuclear and conventional warheads. Director General Strategic Plans Division Lieutenant General Khalid Ahmed Kidwai congratulated scientists and engineers on the successful launch, and the accuracy of the missile in reaching the target.

He said the improved version of Shaheen 1A will further consolidate and strengthen Pakistan’s deterrence abilities. SINGAPORE ? Oil prices rose slightly to nearly $104 a barrel Wednesday in Asia after a report showed U.S. crude supplies unexpectedly fell, suggesting demand may be improving. Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 19 cents to $103.74 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 44 cents to settle at $103.55 in New York on Tuesday. Brent crude for June delivery was up 23 cents at $118.39 per barrel in London. The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories fell 1.0 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted an increase of 1.5 million barrels. Crude supplies had jumped

more than analyst forecasts for the previous four weeks. The Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday. “If the Energy Department corroborates, this would be a bullish number,” energy trader and consultant The Schork Group said in a report. Inventories of gasoline fell 3.6 million barrels last week while distillates also tumbled 3.6 million barrels, the API said. Analysts are worried Europe’s debt crisis may force further government spending cuts that would hurt economic growth. Capital Economics expects Europe’s economy to shrink 1 percent this

NEW YORK - AT&T Inc reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Tuesday, sending its stock up as much as 4 percent, as a decline in iPhone sales reduced the amount of cash it had to pay Apple Inc and boosted its margins. Apple shares fell almost 2 percent after AT&T also said its numbers should improve further in coming quarters when it expects recent upgrade policy changes to temper smartphone sales further. Wireless operators have long paid hefty subsidies for smartphones like the iPhone with an aim to attracting new customers and keeping existing customers happy. But AT&T and rival Verizon Wireless have recently been tightening their policies to temper upgrades after they were both hurt by hefty iPhone subsidies in the fourth quarter, when the latest model hit stores. While fewer iPhone sales meant weaker subscriber growth in the quarter, it did help the company’s wireless profit. Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen said AT&T’s mobile service margin of 41.6 percent had beaten his expectation for 39.7 percent. The margin, based

on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, was 28.7 percent in the fourth quarter and 39 percent in the year-ago quarter. “One of the big things is they didn’t have such a big iPhone refresh,” Larsen said, adding that AT&T results were “pretty good” across the entire company. SAN FRANCISCO - Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street demonstrators from across the country descended on San Francisco Tuesday in an attempt to crash banking giant Wells Fargo’s annual shareholders meeting. Several dozen people representing community groups had bought company stock and were allowed inside. Police said 24 people were arrested, including 15 for disrupting the meeting while inside the standing-room-only gathering of nearly 300 people. Demonstrators outside the Merchant’s Exchange Building in the city’s bustling financial district waved signs and blocked the street while chanting, “We are the 99 percent! Let us in!” Dozens of officers were stationed around the building in advance of the 1 p.m. meeting. Authorities said the demonstration saw only minor skirmishes between protesters and police. Shareholder Erik Crew, 30, of Cincinnati, said he was arrested at the meeting shortly after one protester shouted that Wells Fargo should pay its fair share of corporate taxes. A group of women then said the bank should be ashamed of investing in private prisons and pleaded for a moratorium on home foreclosures, he said. While the demonstration itself was a small win, Crew said, the real victory will come when the corporation actually divests from the aforementioned dealings.

NEW YORK — Harley-Davidson Inc. said Wednesday that its first-quarter profit jumped 44 percent, as improving economic conditions boosted U.S. sales of its well-known motorcycles. The results beat Wall Street expectations and the company boosted its shipment guidance for the year. Harley shares climbed $1.76, or 3.5 percent, to $52.12 in premarket trading. That would top its 52-week high of $52.03 if the premarket price carries over into regular trading once the market opens. Keith Wandell, Harley’s chairman, president and chief executive, partially credited the results to an improved U.S. economic environment and the company’s ongoing restructuring program. Tough economic times tend to hurt sales at companies like Milwaukee-based Harley, whose bikes can range from about $8,000 for a basic model to more than $30,000 for a large highly customized model. After the global economy stalled in 2008 and Harley’s sales plunged 23 percent the next year, it embarked on a massive plan to slash its costs and transform the way it manufactures its motorcycles. But over the last year, the Milwaukee-based company has managed to turn itself around, despite continued economic uncertainty both at home and abroad. Harley’s sales of motorcycle and related products grew 13 percent in 2011 and the recent quarter marked its fourth-straight increase in U.S. sales. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s justice minister said Tuesday he did not oppose reducing Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby’s jail term, but suggested Indonesians in Australian prisons should also receive clemency. Corby, 34, was convicted in 2005 of smuggling more than four kilograms (nine pounds) of marijuana and is serving a 20-year sentence at the overcrowded Kerobokan prison on the resort island of Bali. She filed for clemency in 2010, and the justice ministry says it recommended last year that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reduce her jail term by five years. But justice minister Amir Syamsuddin said any decision on Corby should be reciprocated by Australia, which he said had “hundreds” of Indonesians in

jail, mostly for people smuggling. “So if it’s clear that we are paying attention to the plight of Corby, in reciprocity we hope there will be the same kind of attention from there (Australia),” he told AFP. “Generally, the Australian government is very strict in its laws, especially with regards to those linked to people trafficking. These are poor fishermen involved in people smuggling. There are hundreds of them there,” he added. He did not spell out whether a decision by Sydney on jailed Indonesians was a precondition for Corby receiving a sentence reduction. Under Indonesian law the president has the final decision on clemency, including the power to order an immediate release, but is under no obligation to respond to the ministry’s recommendation or appeals by Corby’s lawyer.

Fuel subsidize consumption restrictions to be delay

JAKARTA - Chief Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said that the government would not implement its restrictions on the use of subsidized gasoline as of May 1, as preparations for the implementation are still underway. “We will not as yet do it on May 1. We will just conduct the expose today. (In the expose) the energy minister will tell the technical details and the President will listen to them. Only after that will we do it. It will take one, two, three or more days (before it can be done). So, it will not as yet be implemented as of May 1,” the minister commented before proceeding to attend a limited cabinet meeting on the economy called by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Tuesday. Hatta remarked that the gov-

ernment still had to study various available options and “out of them we will find the one with the least negative impact.” As has been reported so far, the government is considering imposing restrictions on the use of subsidized gasoline so that its quota set at 40 million kiloliters per year in the revised 2012 budget will not be exceeded. The options being studied so far include prohibiting the use of gasoline in official cars and private cars with certain engine capacities and the sale of subsidized gasoline in posh areas. The government had to resort to such restrictions after it failed to increase the price of subsidized gasoline from April 1 onwards following opposition from the House of Representatives to the proposed fuel subsidy cuts. With the price of subsidized

gasoline remaining the same, the gap between it and the price of non-subsidized gasoline has further widened, in line with the increasing world crude price. The situation has caused the government to express concern that if more motorists turn to subsidized fuel, the subsidy will swell, resulting in more pressure on the budget. Meanwhile, the Director General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy, Evita Legowo, reported that filling stations in Jakarta and the nearby areas of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) are ready to support the restriction plan. “SPBUs in Jabodetabek have been ready to sell (non-subsidized) pertamax gasoline since last year. And efforts would be undertaken in stages to prepare all SPBUs in Java and Bali for it,” she added.

Hindus in Bali commemorate a festivity of Tumpek Kandang. The festivity falling every Saniscara (Saturday) Pon Wuku Uye actually has a meaning to develop compassion for all the God’s creatures, especially animals. Through the Tumpek Kandang ritual, people are expected to develop the livestock sector to strengthen the economic foundations. Then, how should devotees interpret the Tumpek Kandang? In the Sunarigama palm-leaf manuscript is stated that on Saniscara Pon Uye pinaka prakertining sarwa sato. In other words, the day should be made the milestone for preserving all kinds of animals. Celebration of the Tumpek Kandang ritual is not meant to worship the animals. It is a religious festival dedicated to worship Lord Shiva Pasupati, a manifestation of God who has created the animals. On Tumpek Kandang, animals especially cattle are made some celebratory oblations. Essentially, devotees worship the Lord Shiva Pasupati as manifestation of God serving as the king of all the living things. In the ritual procession, devotees invoke blessing in order their cattle could be bestowed with prime healthy and safety. However, philosophically the Tumpek Kandang celebration implies that people should develop compassion for all the living creatures. In the economic context, the procession mandates that agricultural sector in the broader sense (livestock) can be developed to strengthen the economic foundations of society. Sarasamusccaya says that Ayuwa tan masih ring sarwa prani, apan prani ngaran prana, which means not to ignore any care to animals because they are a force of nature. In other words, people must develop compassion for all beings. Especially on Tumpek Kandang, devotees worship God in His manifestation as Lord Shiva Pasupati in order the cattle could be blessed with welfare. Similarly, the prayers are also recited for other livestock such as pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. Even, a pig for the Hindu community in Bali is often used as a sort of saving or piggy bank. When people hold celebrations, the pigs are slaughter or in emergency case they can be sold to meet the needs. As the animals destined for human food, chickens, ducks, pigs and so forth are often used as a protein source to support the human life. To that end, those animals should be constantly developed. However, other specific animals, especially those belonged to the endangered species, should be preserved. For example, they are green turtles, Bali starlings, deers, monkeys and so forth. These rare animals must be maintained so as not to become extinct. To keep the endangered species from extinction, Balinese people associate them with mythology. For instance, the animals are regarded as the property (duwe) of God such as the white cow, ape, fruit bats, snake and so on. Through the mythology, devotees are actually encouraged to conserve the wildlife by preserving them based on religious concepts. Mythology seems much more powerful than a call or an appeal to preserve the endangered species. In the Hindu concept, no single thing is without the power of God. Inside them lie the jivatman or the soul. On that account, the concept of developing compassion for all the God’s creatures should be continued. One of them was by developing cubical artificial reef resembling a pyramid that had been cultivated since several years ago.

Ingredients: 2 handful river snail, 250gram sabrang or cherry potato (peeled) and 800ml water for gravy. Method: Cleanse thoroughly the river snail and cherry potato and drain. Pre-heat the palm oil on the frying pan. Stir-fry the ground spices until smelling fragrant. Add some water and wait until boiling. Put the cherry potato and river snail together into the pan. Add salt, salam leaf and please wait until the cherry potato is cooked.
