LONDON - Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg apologised to Britons on Sunday over a “breach of trust”, taking out full page advertisements in British newspapers after a political consultancy got its hands on data on 50 million users. “We have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can’t, we don’t deserve it,” said the advert, signed by Facebook founder Zuckerberg. The world’s largest social media network is facing growing government scrutiny in Europe and the United States. This follows allegations by a whistleblower that British consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed users’ information to build profiles on American voters that were later used to help

elect U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016. The consultancy said it did not use the data in work it did for the 2016 U.S. election. On Friday night, investigators from Britain’s data watchdog searched the London offices of Cambridge Analytica for several hours. Zuckerberg, whose firm has lost

more than $50 billion in market value since the allegations, said Facebook would give users more information and control about who can access their data. “Thank you for believing in this community. I promise to do better for you,” he wrote. Advertisers Mozilla and German bank Commerzbank have suspended ads on the service and the hashtag #DeleteFacebook has been trending online. On Friday, electric carmaker Tesla Inc and its rocket company SpaceX’s Facebook pages - each with more than 2.6 million followers - were deleted after Chief Executive Elon Musk promised to do so.

Rejection of Benoa Bay reclamation ‘on fire’

DENPASAR — Balinese People’s Forum Rejects Benoa Bay Reclamation (ForBALI) disclosed the latest research on Benoa Bay during an action in front of the governor’s office on Saturday (Mar. 24). The research published in the international journal of Regional Studies in Marine Science (2018) was conducted by researchers from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia.

It was concluded that reclamation of Benoa Bay triggered environmental degradation drastically in terms of physical, chemical and biological aspects. “The conclusion is clear where the reclamation of Benoa Bay is bad for the environment in Bali. Necessarily, if it is fair there is no other reason than terminating the reclamation of Benoa Bay and then restores Benoa Bay into a conservation area,” said ForBALI Coordinator, I Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, in his oration. Gendo added that reclamation causes a slowing of sea currents that can trigger sedimentation in Benoa Bay. This is based on the simulation of the sea currents in 2018 according to the results of research that was also published by one of the national media. Reclamation also leads to disruption of habitat for regular feeding in the Benoa Bay and disturbs the balance of ecosystems. Actually, Benoa Bay is the buffer zone of Bali and becomes one of the keys to maintaining the sustainability of the Island of the Gods. “A lot of people always say that Bali is handsome, nice and cool. Moreover, the tourism in 2018 remains number one as the best tourist destination rated by several international magazines. Many people are proud of it,” he added. However, on the other hand, continued Gendo, there are people stating if Bali tourism has been saturated. As seen from the existing destinations, they are only those of very same things. It is necessary to create a new destination. Actually, before realizing the reclamation or development of new destinations in the Benoa Bay, Bali remains to get the best predicate or become number one. DENPASAR — The development of creative economy is actually not a new alternative other than relying on the economy on tourism. Balinese people also once existed to pursue the sector on the Island of the Gods. For instance, the heyday was ever embraced by silversmiths at Celuk, Sukawati, Gianyar. Now, the government plays a big role to restore the glory for the sustainability of economic resources of Bali in the future. “I think everything goes back to the government itself. For example, formerly Celuk was known as the center for silver crafts. Then, why it now gets eroded because Bali used to be a display, the market place. A lot of silversmiths were taken from Java, especially Jogja,” said a member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, Tjok Gede Asmara Putra Sukawati, when confirmed on Friday (Mar. 23). According to Tjok Asmara, producers outside Bali then also opened a similar business in Bali surely with a cheaper price. As a result, local producers or craftsmen are not able to make a product with good quality because of the price competition. This is what then makes the Balinese unable to compete and it becomes the forerunner of the silver market crash at Celuk. Their situation is getting worse with the proliferation of modern souvenir shops. Therefore, the government should set a standard rule on selling prices and protect local producers. “If the government can make a policy, surely it will come back again. Today, many silver crafts at Celuk have been transformed into a restaurant. Likewise, this also happens to other crafts such as statues at Mas village. So, they have already mingled, no longer be special as ever before,” added this Democratic politician from Gianyar. Tjok Asmara added the characteristic of each region like Celuk with its silverworks must be returned again, namely by making an area grouping

of producers. For instance, Celuk is specified as the center for silverwork art shop only, while the permit of other business should be more tightened if there is an application of opening silverwork art shop outside Celuk. “Thus, whoever wants to find silverworks, they must come to Celuk. Head of the Bali Industry and Trade Agency, I Putu Astawa, claimed to be working with Udayana University to reconstruct master plan of industrial development in Bali in accordance with its cluster. Celuk itself is an example of the application of ‘one village one product’ because most local people produce silver handicrafts. “However, in line with the development apparently there is competition with other silver-producing regions. There may be market saturation. Indeed, it is less competitive against better or cheaper products. Core of the problem lies in the creativity, both in marketing and design techniques,” he said. Astawa admitted that many silver art shops in Celuk have switched. This indicates if the craft is no longer promising, and surely makes the Celuk silver market weaker. Actually, the industrial clusters in Gianyar in particular are quite clear. He said there should be a recommendation to restore the glory both in terms of how to market it in the digital era, increase promotion, or review the policies that favors local community. “One of our constraints is in the matter of raw materials so that it makes our silver competitiveness not good because it is still imported. Hence, we enforce with KITE program (Ease of Import for Export Destination). For example, we are exporting silver; we bring in silver raw material from overseas with 0 percent tax. Pampered pooches take to the sky in travel niche

HONG KONG - Ding Dong and Fun Fun, a pair of 12-year-old Yorkshire terriers, know how to enjoy the high life - literally. The pampered pets and their owner, Zoe Man, 43, flew on a private plane from Hong Kong to Japan for a five-day holiday. The terriers tucked into an inflight meal of grilled salmon and tender chicken. Man, vice president of a textileand-apparel company in Hong Kong, plans two more trips by private jet this year, part of a growing number of owners indulging their pets on specialist holidays. “I’ve asked myself why I spend so much money on them,” said Man, who spent over HK$240,000 ($30,600) taking Ding Dong and Fun Fun on the trip to Osaka, Japan last year. “I’ve wondered whether they know the difference. But I think they do know - they must have known the air smelt different,” she said, sitting next to Fun Fun who was clad in a padded jacket. Hong Kong travel company Life Travel, which organised Man’s trip, started flying pooches and their owners last year from Hong Kong to Japan, currently its only destination for these tours. On commercial flights, pets are typically carried in the hold. On its private jets, small dogs sit on their owner’s lap, while bigger dogs can lie on the floor, Life Travel said. Life Travel’s pet holidays start from around HK$70,000, for a

week in Okinawa, Japan. It even offers “petmiles” as an added incentive. Meals and water are served to both dogs and owners and after arriving at their destination, they are taken to designated pet-friendly accommodation. Consumer spending on pets in China is growing at about 20 percent a year and will be a $7 billion market by 2022, market research firm Euromonitor International says. The pet market in the United States is growing around 2 percent a year. Chinese airline Hainan Airlines, owned by HNA Group, said in January that it was testing a pilot scheme to allow travellers to bring small pets with them on certain domestic routes. Life Travel organised three trips to Japan last year and is planning 13 in 2018 and 50 in 2019. It plans to offer trips to other countries, including the United States, this year but customs policies and quarantine requirements mean certain destinations, such as Australia, are off the cards. Although the company has received requests to take cats, turtles, parrots, and even a hamster on its luxury trips, Life Travel founder Raymond Chung said that for now the company is sticking with dogs only. “There is a huge market out there. BALI becomes a ‘heaven’ to photographers having a particular interest in the genre of stage photography, specifically those that like to perpetuate the beauty of a dance. In addition to great events such as the Bali Arts Festival held for a whole month every year, the dance performances are almost held every night as found in the tourist areas of Bali. For example, the performance of cak a cappella in Tanah Lot as well as Legong and Sanghyang Jaran Dance in Ubud are specially staged for tourist consumption. For stage photography hobbyists, these regular performances can be taken advantage as the ‘hunting grounds’ to get interesting stage photos. Most dance performances usually take place at night. Some are held inside and outside the building. Wherever the staging is held, the main character of stage photography including the stage of the dance is low light photography namely the photography with minimal lighting. In general, a dance performance is designed to be watched by spectators and not to be photographed. Therefore, the photographers must be smart to deal with such condition. So, what should be considered so that you still have a chance to get interesting photographs of the dance? Recognizing the performing stage is not limited to knowing the stage physically or just staging place. No less important is that you also have to know deeply about what will be staged. Of course, it will sound very funny if we photograph a dance performance but we do not know what dance to be performed by the dancers we will photograph. If the performance is fragmentary show or ballet, we also need to know what the play is. Prepare the Equipment

We can still get an equal ‘satisfaction.’ Just focus on photographing the whole stage. A wide photo showing the whole scene on stage is equally interesting. Another thing needs to remember is that almost in every dance performance, the staging organizers usually do not allow photographers to shoot with the help of flash, either built-in or externally. On that account, you must be really ready to get around the staging conditions with generally low light. Nothing is wrong, make your time to come

and watch during rehearsal because at the time of rehearsal the lighting arrangement or lighting stage has usually been set as in the actual staging. Obviously, this can be a very valuable guide and allows you to make camera setting. White balance in photographing dance performances should be set daylight to approach the human eye to see such as red will be recorded red, blue recorded blue. Islamist gunman attacks French supermarket, kills three

TREBES - A gunman killed three people in southwestern France on Friday as he held up a car, fired on police and seized hostages in a supermarket, screaming “Allahu Akbar” before security forces stormed the building and killed him, authorities said. Sixteen other people were wounded, including two who were seriously hurt, in what President Emmanuel Macron called an act of “Islamist terrorism”. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack. Macron said security services were checking that claim. “I want to tell the nation tonight of my absolute determination in leading this fight,” said Macron, who returned to Paris from Brussels to chair a crisis meeting with ministers and security officials. More than 240 people have been killed in France in attacks since 2015 by assailants who pledged allegiance to Islamic State or were inspired by the group. Friday’s attacker was identified by authorities as Redouane Lakdim, 25, from the city of Carcassonne. Two people were killed when he attacked the supermarket in the nearby small town of Trebes. BOGOR - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and industry minister Airlangga Hartarto enjoyed morning exercises at Bogor Botanical Garden here on Saturday. Airlangga who is also the general chairman of Golkar Party which is one of the biggest political parties in the country arrived at the Bogor Presidential Palace at around 7.40am while Jokowi arrived soon after riding the newly-bought chopper-typed Royal Enfield Bullet 350cc motorbike.
