Shakira’s domination in America has dwindled since she became a hip-swiveling goddess of festive pop hits like “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie.” Already a superstar in her native Colombia, the multitalented singer-songwriter-instrumentalist took the American pop scene by storm when she made her U.S. language debut in 2001 with personal, rich songs about romance and more. But her recent albums haven’t matched the spark, edge and charisma from her work a decade ago, and her new self-titled release, while enjoyable at times, doesn’t showcase this Grammy-winning, Golden Globe-nominated superstar in the right light. “Shakira,” her tenth album, features the 37year-old taking a back seat as lead songwriter and producer, and that doesn’t come off as a wise move. “Dare (La La La),” helmed by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and others, sounds like a Jennifer Lopez song, and that’s not a compliment (sorry, Jenny). While Shakira’s stint as a judge on “The Voice” has been pleasurable to watch, her duet with fellow mentor Blake Shelton on the country-feeling “Medicine” is a bore, though it was co-written by Academy Award nominee and hit country songwriter Hillary Lindsey. Even the duet with Rihanna, the up-tempo lead single “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” comes off as a cry for a pop hit. The song lacks energy though two superstars are part of it, and the collaboration feels forced (Rihanna and Shakira are both signed to Roc Nation management). The album’s lyrics also lack emotion and depth. It’s a far stretch from Shakira’s earlier songs, such as her Latin pop breakthrough “Estoy Aqui (I’m Here)” or the part-gritty, part- bouncy “La Tortura.” The new album follows in the footsteps of her last two albums, 2009’s “She Wolf” and 2010’s “Sale el Sol,” which have bright spots, but still didn’t carry the oomph and appeal of her earlier work. Shakira does move the needle a bit on the reggae-laced “Cut Me Deep,” which features the band Magic! Nasir Atweh, the band’s lead singer, is part of the songwriting duo The Messengers, who have penned hits for Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Pitbull. “Spotlight,” co-written by Lindsey and produced by Greg Kurstin, sounds arena-ready, which is excellent for an entertaining performer like Shakira. And the album’s most honest moment is “23,” a sweet ode to her 1-year-old son’s father, soccer player Gerard Pique, who is 10 years younger than Shakira (he was 23 when they met). CANBERRA — Time is running out to find the crucial keys that could solve the mystery of how and why Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down. After the excruciating 17-day wait for confirmation that the Boeing 777 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, searchers are racing to locate the so-called black boxes before a battery-powered ping they emit fades away. By law, the boxes with must be able to send those signals for at least 30 days following a crash. But experts say they can continue making noise for another 15 days or so beyond that, depending upon the strength of the black box battery

at the time of the crash. Without the black boxes — the common name for the voice and data recorders normally attached to a fuselage — it would be virtually impossible for investigators to definitively say what caused the crash. The location of the plane is still unknown more than two weeks after it crashed, although Malaysian authorities say a British satellite company has pinpointed its last position in the Indian Ocean, where

several countries have reported finding floating debris. It’s now up to experts in ocean currents and weather patterns to give searchers their best estimate on where the plane actually went down, which is where the black boxes — they’re really red cylinders — are likely to be located. “We’ve got to get lucky,” said John Goglia, a former member of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. “It’s a race to get to the area in time to catch the black box pinger while it’s still working.” To “catch” the signal, searchers will be putting to use a high-tech listening device loaned by the U.S. Navy.

One of the Navy’s Towed Pinger Locators is already en route to the search area. It’s a 30-inch-long cylindrical microphone that’s slowly towed underwater in a grid pattern behind a commercial ship. It will pick up any black box ping emitted from, on average, 1 mile away — but could hear a ping from 2 miles away depending upon a number of factors, from ocean conditions to topography to if the black boxes are buried or not. The listening device is attached to about 20,000 feet of cable and is guided through the ocean depths by a yellow, triangular carrier with a shark fin on top. It looks like a stingray and has a wingspan of 3

feet. The device sends data up that long cable every half second, where both human operators and computers aboard a ship carefully listen for any strong signals and record a ping’s location. The ship keeps towing the device over the grid so that operators can triangulate the strongest pings — and hopefully locate the exact location of the black boxes. Aside from the Towed Pinger Locator, an Australian navy support vessel, the Ocean Shield, is expected to arrive in the search zone within three or four days, officials said. It’s equipped with acoustic detection equipment that will also listen for pings.

SINGARAJA - Ahead of Nyepi Day, the basic commodities in Buleleng begin to show off a significant price hike. One is them is the price of chili commencing to rise sharply. Currently, the price of chili in traditional market has reached IDR 100,000 per kg. This price hike has happened since three days ago. Even, the price hike has taken place since the past three months in North Bali. Due to this condition, most buyers that will need chili for the preparation of welcoming the Nyepi Day are forced to reduce the chili purchased from the usual amount. As observation of Bali Post to a number of traditional markets in Buleleng on Monday (Mar 24), the price of red chilies with the best quality and did not mix with green chili continued to rise. The best quality chili was sold for IDR 100,000 per kg. Meanwhile, the chili of medium quality with the mixture of green chilies was sold for IDR 80,000 per kg. With this condition, the buyers who were preparing the celebration of the Nyepi Day remaining a week to go are forced to keep buying even though the price was so high. Buyers could only reduce the amount of chili to be purchased from the usual amount. One of the local traders, I Ketut Daris, said the recent price hike of chili slightly made difficult to sell to the buyers. According to him, the increase had happened from the suppliers where they offered a more expensive price than usual one. As a result, this condition forced him to raise the price of chili. Even though the price of chili continued to rise, the price of other spices like large chili remained stable at IDR 20,000 per kg. The other spices such as onion and garlic showed a stable price condition and had not showed an increase. “Since the price from the collector has gone up, we are forced to increase the selling price to consumers. The peak of price hike has occurred since the past three days,” he said. Although the price of chili was expensive, added Daris, the demand from consumers was still crowded, especially before the Nyepi Day where buyers remained to need chili for their seasoning ingredients during the celebration. Since the price of chili increased, consumers reduced their purchase from the usual amount. “The demand remains crowded, now buyers tend to reduce their purchase because it is quite expensive,” he added. Meanwhile, another buyer named Kadek Suryani claimed to resign and could not do much after knowing the price of chili had skyrocketed. She could only reduce the purchase of chili from the usual amount. Besides, she also tried to use other additives like pepper, so she did not need to use chili in large quantities. “Now, I maximally purchase chili of 100 grams. If imposed, I worry to be unable to purchase other ingredients. I will try to anticipate by using other ingredients such as pepper whose cost is relatively cheaper,” she added. To be noted, the price of chili had continued to rise since the past few months. This happened because the production of chili at the level of farmers started to diminish. A number of farmers claimed to face crop failure due to adverse weather condition. Originally, the price hike of chili occurred in January 2014. At that time, the price reached IDR 30,000 and then in February 2014 the price increased again two-fold to IDR 60,000 per kg. The peak of increase in the price of chili in Buleleng occurred in March 2014 which reached IDR 100,000 per kg. (mud)

A corpse found floating in subak waterways Bali Post DENPASAR - Residents around the waterways of Subak Yeh Tegal Jaya, Abiansemal, Badung, was shocked by the finding of a floating corpse, Monday (Mar 24). Having been investigated, in fact the victim was a housewife named Ni Nyoman Murdi, 50, living at Puseh hamlet, Angantaka village, Abiansemal, Badung. Spokesperson of Badung Police, Made Dina, said the victim’s corpse was first discovered by Nyoman Bagiana and Jeri Puji. Both residents who were washing clothes shocked

after seeing a figure floating not far from their location of washing. “The discovery took place around 09:30 a.m.,” he said. Once checked, said Made Dina, the corpse was in fact Ni Nyoman Murdi living at Puseh hamlet, Angantaka village, Abiansemal, Badung. The victim was directly examined by medical team but her life was already beyond help. Further, Made Dina said that his members received information that the victim previously left home and carried clothes to be washed. The victim usually washed in the

waterways of Subak Yeh Tegal Jaya located in the east of the victim’s house. “The victim was known to wash at eight o’clock in the morning, but after that the victim never returned,” he said. Allegedly when the victim was washing clothes the epilepsy she suffered for long time relapsed. As a result, the victim fell unconscious and immediately drifted about 500 meters away and was then found by local residents. “The victim has often been prohibited by her children from washing considering the epilepsy disease she suffered,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAN FRANCISCO — Google is hoping to make its Internetconnected eyewear more stylish as part of a partnership with the makers of Ray-Ban and Oakley frames. The alliance with Italian eyewear company Luxottica Group announced Monday represents Google’s latest attempt to make wearable technology look less geeky as it tries to develop new ways to ensure people can stay connected to the Internet wherever they go. Last week, Google disclosed that fashion accessory maker Fossil Group is working on an Internet-connected wristwatch that runs Google’s Android software for mobile devices.

Cisco to invest over $1B in cloud computing

Cisco plans to use the money to expand its data centers for the new service to be called Cisco Cloud Services. The move makes the San Jose, California-based networking company the latest to enter an arena that caters to the growing number of companies that would rather rent computing space than build their own. One of the biggest players in the market is Amazon.com. IBM Corp. said in January that it will invest $1.2B in its cloud computing operations. This target shows an increase from the previous year reaching 3,600 tons of rice. “Absorption of the rice produced by local farmers will be done early April until May. This effort is made in order there will be no rice sold under the government purchase price (HPP) at harvest time,” said the Regional Division Head of Bulog, Gede Rempiana, in Denpasar. He said that his party would purchase the rice of farmers at IDR 6,600 per kg for medium quality. However, based on experience in previous years, farmers in Bali rarely sold their products to Bulog because the market price was higher than the price offered by Bulog. “We offer the price of rice at IDR 6,600 per kg received at the warehouse with medium quality. However, farmers are usually reluctant to sell their rice to Bulog

because the market price on offer is much higher. Nevertheless, we are still optimistic the target of 5,000 tons will be achieved because the current production is abundant. The price will be closer to standard price so that farmers sell their rice to us,” he explained. According to him, in a year, the Bulog absorbed 35,000 tons of rice of farmers where most of the stock was allocated to meet the needs of rice for the poor (Raskin). The small rice uptake from local farmers would be covered with rice from outside Bali. “Bali is very strategic because it is close to the high rice-producing areas such as East Java. However, people do not need to worry because next four months we have a total stock of 9,700 tons,” he said. He explained that Balinese soci-

In third place is Gianyar County with 21,279 poor families and Badung County with 10,979 families,” he explained. He added that Tabanan claiming itself as the rice granary region on the island also had poor families and received subsidized rice from the government for 19,114 families. The supply of rice for the poor in this region had no problem or the whole needs could still be met. “Based on the existing plafond, each family gets the rations to purchase 15 kg of rice per month at IDR1,600 per kilogram,” he said. Stability of security related to Nyepi celebration coinciding with the election did not only last during the implementation of ogoh-ogoh parade. Melasti activities undertaken by people in the celebration of Nyepi would also be discussed in the meeting. “No matter how the results of meeting will be, all the parties should equally respect them,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Gianyar Electoral Commission, Anak Agung Gede Putra, responding to the rampant political party attributes ahead of the melasti procession, claimed he was unable to do much. In this case, the Electoral Commission could not ban it because it remained in the campaign period. This issue would be further coordinated with relevant parties because it also involved religious tolerance and commitment in maintaining the security and stability in the implementation of Nyepi. Prevent conflicts with ogoh-ogoh parade before Pengerupukan Bali Post

GIANYAR - The night of Pengerupukan is identical to the implementation of ogohogoh parade. The celebration of Nyepi often invites an apprehensiveness of conflict. It can tarnish the celebration of Nyepi that should be carried out solemnly by the Hindus. To prevent this, the implementation of ogoh-ogoh must be through a parade and be performed before the Pengerupukan. Seeing such condition, Gianyar County made the ogoh-ogoh activity at Tegallalang a pilot project in the effort to prevent the unwanted things. Based on the implementation last year, the county government finally supported the implementation of the ogoh-ogoh

by conferring financial assistance worth IDR 675 million. The funds were distributed to seven hamlets denoting the participants of the ogoh-ogoh parade accompanied by the fragmentary show entitled Mayadenawa. Other than preventing conflict, the ogohogoh parade could also be implemented as a tour package that would surely be beneficial for every village. Meanwhile, the implementation coinciding with the period of campaign would become a challenge of its own. During this electoral campaign, the ogoh-ogoh parade was accompanied with fragmentary show without being contaminated by political interests. It was purely an art, customs and culture without any political interests. “Its pattern and rules have been clear so there is no longer a political contamination,” he said. DENPASAR - The occurrence of escaping patient or the one who leaves without settling the administration fees at Sanglah Hospital frequently occurs. The number of patients and visitors coming to this central referral hospital in Bali makes it a bit difficult to monitor the patient and his family intending to escape. Such escaping patient case occurred on Wednesday (Mar 19). The patient was on behalf of Sasongko Yudha with the address in Jakarta. Yudha was a patient who got traffic accident and has been treated at Sanglah Hospital for a month. Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, explained on Monday (Mar 24) that the patient came into hospital on Thursday (Feb 20). Based on information, Yudha got accident in Gianyar with his companion. “His companion was hospitalized in Gianyar, while Yudha was referred to Sanglah Hospital,” said Nariyantha. Originally, Yudha was identified as Mr. X because when the accident occurred he was not carrying any identity. After conscious and asked by the officer, it was found the name and phone number of his mother named Mrs. Puji.

The authority of Sanglah Hospital then informed to Puji if her son got an accident. “We asked for her presence to Sanglah Hospital because there is an action requiring the approval of the family,” said Nariyantha. Having contacted for several times, finally Mrs. Puji came after Yudha had been treated for nearly a month and allowed to go home. “Mother of the patient came to hospital on Monday (Mar 17). On the following day, with the reason of settling the paperwork his mother asked for permission to leave the patient in the room for a while,” said Nariyantha. During the day, Puji did not show up. The hospital officer had contacted and said she was administering the JKN. But on Wednesday (Mar 19), Yudha was not found either in the treatment room. “In that morning, the patient had a training of mobilization, but he was not in the room at noon,” said Nariyantha. The officials had looked for the patient around the hospital area, but did not find him. The administrative requirements that should be completed before going home was apparently not resolved yet by the patient’s family. Though his hospitalization had been closed, the administrative matter of Yudha was still being process until Monday (Mar 24). (san)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The thrust of his diplomatic efforts still focused on Ukraine, President Barack Obama met Tuesday with a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin as he continued his efforts to isolate Moscow over its incursion into Crimea. In a last minute addition to his schedule, Obama sat down with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev in a long room at the U.S. embassy, with the two countries’ flags set up behind them. U.S. officials offered no details about the meeting’s agenda, but Nazarbayev is part of a Russia-centered economic bloc focused on Eurasia. As the leaders wrapped up their meeting, the White House released a joint statement from Obama and Nazarbayev that did not address the Ukraine situation, but focused instead on bilateral cooperation on nuclear security and nonproliferation — the theme of concurrent summit serving as the official purpose for Obama’s visit to the Netherlands. Kazakhstan is the second largest country by territory and economy to emerge from the former Soviet Union, but Kazakhstan’s energy resources and strong economy give it some independence from Moscow. Nazarbayev has maneuvered between Russia and the West during more than two decades in power.

Both Obama and Putin have already been in touch with Nazarbayev this month in the wake of the Crimean upheaval. Obama spoke by phone with the Kazakhstan leader on March 10. The White House said then that Obama urged Nazarbayev to play an active role in seeking a peaceful resolution over the disputed peninsula. Putin spoke to Nazarbayev on March 16, the day of the secession referendum in Crimea. BANGKOK — A double-decker bus carrying municipal workers on a field trip in western Thailand plunged off a steep road and into a ravine, killing at least 30 people and injuring 22 others, officials said Tuesday. The accident Monday night was the latest fatal crash on a mountain road in Tak province known for its treacherous dips and turns where 300 accidents occurred last year, said provincial governor Suriya Prasatbunditya. The road is frequented by buses and trucks traveling to and from the border with Myanmar. The driver was trying to pass cars on a winding downhill road when it skidded off the edge and flipped several times as it tumbled about

30 meters (100 feet) into a valley before crashing into a tree, Suriya said, recounting what other drivers who witnessed the accident told police. The driver, who survived the accident with a broken rib, said he tried to slow down but claimed the brakes stopped working, Suriy said. The bus was one of four carrying local workers and villagers Monday night from Tak to northeastern Thailand. “Accidents happen on this road very often,” Suriya said. “We’ve put warning signs up to caution road users but the accidents keep happening.” Road accidents are common in Thailand, where safety standards are poor and road rules are rarely enforced. Last year, more than 8,600 people died in accidents on Thai roads.

THE HAGUE - President Barack Obama and top economic powers on Monday cancelled an upcoming G8 summit in Russia, seeking to deepen Moscow’s isolation over its intervention in the Ukraine crisis. After emergency talks called by Obama, it was announced that the G8 summit in Sochi in June would be replaced by a G7 meeting in Brussels, without Russian involvement. The G7 also threatened tougher sanctions against Russia for its annexation of Crimea, which has plunged relations between the West and Moscow to their lowest point since the Cold War. The meeting in The Hague came as Ukraine ordered its outnumbered troops to withdraw from Crimea as yet another of its bases was stormed. Earlier, the White House had said it was “very concerned” by the Russian troop build-up on the border. “We remain ready to intensify actions including coordinated sectoral sanctions that will have an increasingly significant impact on the Russian economy, if Russia continues to escalate this situation,” the G7 leaders said in a statement. The G7 “came together because of shared beliefs and shared responsibilities. Russia’s actions in recent weeks are not consistent with them. Under these circumstances, we will not participate in the planned Sochi summit.” But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov defiantly dismissed such a move as “no great tragedy” after separate talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Ukraine’s interim Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya -- the highest-level contacts between the two neighbours since the crisis erupted. “If our Western partners think that this format (the G8) has outlived itself, then so be it,” Lavrov told reporters. “We are not trying to hold on to this format, and we see no great tragedy if it does not meet,” he said, insisting that Crimea has “a right to self-determination”. Russia’s takeover of the region was not “malicious intent”, said Lavrov, but was to “protect the Russians who have been living there for hundreds of years”. Moscow was added to the G7 club of the US, Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Britain -- seen as the world’s top diplomatic and economic table -- in 1999 as a reward for choosing the path of democracy after the collapse of Communism. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the snubbing of Russia was “perhaps the most significant action because it shows that all these different countries have not accepted the annexation of Crimea as a fait accompli”. Fabius stressed that the G7 had agreed to work out how to reduce their energy dependency on Russia. “Because when we talk about sanctions, possible reactions, energy questions must be asked,” Fabius said. “We must be in a situation where we don’t depend as much as we do today on Russia,” he said.

Such modest savings and a new levy of 8.0 percent -- up from 5.0 percent -- might not register in places with much higher consumption taxes. But not so in Japan, where the economy has been long been locked in a deflationary spiral and consumers are used to paying pretty much the same prices year after year for their haircuts, televisions, beer and sushi.

Nevertheless, he said there was still a hope for the mangrove to grow well again provided that the oil waste should really no longer exist. “As long as there is no oil contamination, the mangroves can still be growing again. Most importantly, the species of mangrove is appropriate with the local soil. From the results of the meeting with the Indonesia Power, they are told to replace the media, lest we plant back at the location but they will die later. So, the soil is removed and replaced with new soil or media,” he explained. Kahar added the mangrove contamination due to oil spill happened for the first time. It was in contrast to pollution kindled by waste that caused the death of many mangroves as it covered the breath roots of mangroves. Plastic waste piling up around the mangrove also generated foul odors and liquids that were not good to the growth of mangroves and the ecosystems around the mangrove. “I cannot ascertain. Obviously, it can lead to a very foul odor from the waste. Oil cannot dissolve in the ground, cannot biodegrade and can cover the breath roots of mangroves as it is sticky at the root,” he affirmed. If referring to the content of Lontar Sundarigama which is related to Pengerupukan says “’amantukaken buta kala kabeh’’, the procession of ogoh-ogoh has tight relation with pengerupukan.

The nine Gods in Hindu also have nine form

The head of IHDN Denpasar, Prof. Dr. Made Titib, said that in Hindu literary there is no statement about ogoh-ogoh. In Bali, ogohogoh was made fro the first time in 1980’s in the from of bhuta kala and the character of bhuta kala is destroyed during Pengerupukan. According to Titib, there is Dasera ritual in India where the people make ogoh-ogoh in the form of special character in the ancient Hindu story such as Rahwana, Kumbakarna, and others. He appreciated that the ogohogoh is the form of the creativity of the Balinese but in the procession of the parade, the people must put forward the safety and security of others and themselves. “We must keep Bali as the best tourism desti-

nation. We can not give bad image to the island,” he added. The head of Bali Hindu Association (Parisada), IGN Sudiana, said that after the parade, the ogoh-ogoh will given a holy water of penyomia so it will return to its neutral state and will not disturb human unless the ogoh-ogoh is given special offerings so another oferring must also given after the parade. “After the parade, the ogoh-ogoh can be burnt or dismantled so it can be used for the next Nyepi. However, if the makers want to display the ogoh-ogoh, it is possible but torn leafs must be added around it,” he added. Sudiana urged the Hindus to make the ogoh-ogoh suitable the concept of Hindu literature which is bhuta kala so it must be in the form of bhuta kala and not God or Goddess.

NEW YORK — Three extreme-skydiving enthusiasts accused of parachuting off the 1 World Trade Center tower last year were arrested Monday, authorities said, in a second criminal case in two weeks arising from surreptitious stunts at the nation’s tallest skyscraper. The three daredevils and someone accused of being an accomplice were facing charges including felony burglary in a Sept. 30 leap from the building, where a teenage boy was arrested on March 16. Authorities said the teen had slipped through a gap in a fence, eluded an inattentive security guard and spent about two hours atop the 1,776-foot (541-meter)-tall tower. The incidents have raised questions about security at the lower Manhattan site, which is supposed to be one of the most tightly protected in the country. The site is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The New York Police Department said last year that investigators were looking for two parachutists in dark jumpsuits seen floating near the building around 3 a.m. on Sept. 30, landing by a nearby skyscraper and walking away. It was “very exhilarating,” one of the accused jumpers, Andrew Rossig, said Monday as he and co-defendant James Brady headed to a police precinct to surrender. “It’s a fair amount of free-fall time,” he said. “You really get to enjoy the view of the city and see it from a different perspective.” Rossig, an avid BASE jumper — the acronym stands for “building, antenna, span, earth” — said the skydivers took care to keep from endangering anyone, choosing a time when streets would be largely deserted. Brady, an ironworker who formerly worked at the trade center, declined to comment. It wasn’t immediately clear how investigators zeroed in on Rossig, Brady, skydiving instructor Marko Markovich and Kyle Hartwell, accused of being their cohort on the ground. Police searched their homes last month and got video of the jump, which hadn’t been posted online or otherwise publicized, Rossig attorney Timothy Parlatore said. But he said authorities didn’t signal arrests were imminent until 16-year-old Justin Casquejo’s arrest last week. BEIJING — Furious that Malaysia has declared their loved ones lost in a plane crash without physical evidence, Chinese relatives of the missing marched Tuesday to the Malaysian Embassy, where they threw plastic water bottles, tried to rush the gate and chanted, “Liars!” The Chinese government, meanwhile, demanded that Malaysia turn over the satellite data it used to conclude that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down in the southern Indian Ocean with no survivors after turning back from its flight path to Beijing on March 8. Among the flight’s 239 passengers, 153 were Chinese nationals, making the incident a highly emotional one for Beijing, and the government’s demand reflected the desire among many Chinese relatives of passengers for more conclusive information on the plane’s fate. Nearly 100 relatives and their supporters marched to the embassy in the late morning, wearing white T-shirts that read “Let’s pray for

MH370” as they held banners and chanted for about three hours. “Tell the truth! Return our relatives!” they shouted. JAKARTA - Jakarta called Monday for a Saudi family to accept a substantial payment and halt the impending execution of an Indonesian maid on death row in the kingdom for murder. If the execution of Satinah Binti Jumadi Ahmad goes ahead, it could set back attempts by Indonesia and Saudi Arabia to mend ties damaged by the 2011 beheading of an Indonesian maid, who was also guilty of murder. Saudi Arabia is the world’s biggest destination for Indonesian maids, with around one million in the ultra-conservative kingdom. Officials in Jakarta expect Ahmad, sentenced to death in 2011 for murdering her employer’s wife and stealing money, to be executed in early April unless the victim’s family accepts the money offered and forgives her. Under Islamic sharia law followed in Saudi Arabia, the family of a victim can settle for “blood money” instead of an execution. However Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Wardana told reporters that contributions from the government and maid protection groups had not raised the required seven million riyal ($1.9

million), but only four million. “It is now in the hands of the victim’s family,” said Wardana, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, appealing for them to accept the lower payment. The Indonesian government had already succeeded in getting the execution delayed five times in the two and a half years since her conviction, officials said. The 2011 execution infuriated Indonesia, particularly as Saudi authorities failed to inform Jakarta beforehand. Indonesia placed a moratorium on sending new maids to Saudi Arabia following the beheading but the countries took a step towards overcoming their differences with the signing of an agreement last month to give maids in the kingdom better protection. Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of sharia law.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has banned Hollywood biblical epic “Noah” starring Russell Crowe, censors said Tuesday, the latest Muslim country to stop the film being screened due to concerns it contradicts Islamic values. Censors in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country said they decided to ban the film, which had been set for release Friday, as the depiction of prophets is forbidden under Islamic law. As well as being a biblical figure, Noah is also a prophet for Muslims. “We rejected the screening of the film in Indonesia,” Zainut Tauhid Saadi, a member of the Indonesian Censorship Board, told AFP.

“The visual depiction of a prophet is forbidden in Islam,” he said, adding: “The film will hurt both Christian and Muslim communities.” It came after the Paramount film based on the story of Noah’s ark, which stars Crowe as Noah and is directed by Darren Aronofsky, was banned by Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates earlier this month. Egypt’s top Islamic body, the Al-Azhar institute, has called for “Noah” not to be screened in the country. The film has also angered some Christian institutions in the United States due to Crowe’s reportedly unconventional portrayal of Noah. The ongoing controversy over the film, which also stars Jennifer Connolly and Emma Watson,

prompted Paramount to announce last month they would add an explanatory message to future marketing materials for the movie. It issued a joint statement with the US-based National Religious Broadcasters body, announcing the move “to help audiences better understand that the feature film is a dramatization of the major scriptural themes and not a line-by-line retelling of the Bible story”. A meeting between the 36 clubs in the first and second divisions on Monday failed to provide a two-thirds majority needed to implement the technology, with many citing the high cost of installing a system as the reason for turning down the proposal. “The costs are so exorbitant that it’s not bearable,” said Joerg Schmaedtke, managing director of second-division Cologne. A goalline system would have cost each club about €500,000 ($688,700) for three years. Bayern Munich and some other top clubs were in favor of the technology but could not convince the others. “We regret the outcome,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. “We are going to continue to have to live with wrong decisions. Those who voted against should stop lamenting

SAO PAULO — The mayor of Porto Alegre said Monday the southern Brazilian city will not be able to host World Cup matches if local lawmakers fail to approve a bill to help finance the installation of the temporary structures needed for the tournament. Mayor Jose Fortunati told Radio Gaucha that “we are in a difficult situation” and “if there’s no vote, then it’s settled: We will not have the World Cup in Porto Alegre.” His comments came the day FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, the official in charge of the World Cup, arrived in Rio de Janeiro for a series of meetings to discuss Brazil’s preparations for the tournament that starts in June. There is no timetable on the vote and FIFA said it can take up to three months to put the structures in place. The World Cup begins on June 12. FIFA says matches cannot be held in stadiums that don’t have the temporary facilities that are used for the media, sponsors and technical teams. “All this equipment will be bought through this bill, which will provide the resources,” Fortunati said. “If it’s not voted, we won’t be able to seek funding. ... This means that we will not have temporary structures and we will not have a World Cup. It’s simple to understand. There’s no Plan B.” The bill must be approved by Rio Grande do Sul lawmakers to secure tax exemptions for companies interested in funding the facilities. The local government already said it will not spend public money on the projects, which are a responsibility of the stadium owner. A meeting between the 36 clubs in the first and second divisions on Monday failed to provide a two-thirds majority needed to implement the technology, with many citing the high cost of installing a system as the reason for turning down the proposal. “The costs are so exorbitant that it’s not bearable,” said Joerg Schmaedtke, managing director of second-division Cologne. A goalline system would have cost each club about €500,000 ($688,700) for three years. SAO PAULO — The mayor of Porto Alegre said Monday the southern Brazilian city will not be able to host World Cup matches if local lawmakers fail to approve a bill to help finance the installation of the temporary structures needed for the tournament. Mayor Jose Fortunati told Radio Gaucha that “we are in a difficult situation” and “if there’s no vote, then it’s settled: We will not have the World Cup in Porto Alegre.” His comments came the day FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, the official in charge of the World Cup, arrived in Rio de Janeiro for a series of meetings to discuss Brazil’s preparations for the tournament that starts in June. There is no timetable on the vote and FIFA said it can take up to three months to put the structures in place. The World Cup begins on June 12. FIFA says matches cannot be held in stadiums that don’t have the temporary facilities that are used for the media, sponsors and technical teams. “All this equipment will be bought through this bill, which will provide the resources,” Fortunati said. “If it’s not voted, we won’t be able to seek funding. ... This means that we will not have temporary structures and we will not have a World Cup. It’s simple to understand. There’s no Plan B.” The bill must be approved by Rio Grande do Sul lawmakers to secure tax exemptions for companies interested in funding the facilities. The local government already said it will not spend public money on the projects, which are a responsibility of the stadium owner. NEW YORK — Three extreme-skydiving enthusiasts accused of parachuting off the 1 World Trade Center tower last year were arrested Monday, authorities said, in a second criminal case in two weeks arising from surreptitious stunts at the nation’s tallest skyscraper. The three daredevils and someone accused of being an accomplice were facing charges including felony burglary in a Sept. 30 leap from the building, where a teenage boy was arrested on March 16. Authorities said the teen had slipped through a gap in a fence, eluded an inattentive security guard and spent about two hours atop the 1,776-foot (541-meter)-tall tower. The incidents have raised questions about security at the lower Manhattan site, which is supposed to be one of the most tightly protected in the country. The site is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The New York Police Department said last year that investigators were looking for two parachutists in dark jumpsuits seen floating near the building around 3 a.m. on Sept. 30, landing by a nearby skyscraper and walking away. It was “very exhilarating,” one of the accused jumpers, Andrew Rossig, said Monday as he and co-defendant James Brady headed to a police precinct to surrender. “It’s a fair amount of free-fall time,” he said. “You really get to enjoy the view of the city and see it from a different perspective.” Rossig, an avid BASE jumper — the acronym stands for “building, antenna, span, earth” — said the skydivers took care to keep from endangering anyone, choosing a time when streets would be largely deserted. Brady, an ironworker who formerly worked at the trade center, declined to comment. It wasn’t immediately clear how investigators zeroed in on Rossig, Brady, skydiving instructor Marko Markovich and Kyle Hartwell, accused of being their cohort on the ground. Police searched their homes last month and got video of the jump, which hadn’t been posted online or otherwise publicized, Rossig attorney Timothy Parlatore said. But he said authorities didn’t signal arrests were imminent until 16-year-old Justin Casquejo’s arrest last week. Hartwell’s lawyer, Joseph Murray, said Hartwell also surrendered and declined to comment further. Markovich’s attorney, Joseph Corozzo, said his client was a “very responsible individual” and highly trained parachuting instructor. “He has an impeccable background, and I just hope that he’s not turned into some form of a scapegoat for the Port Authority’s shortcomings” in security, Corozzo said. BEIJING — Furious that Malaysia has declared their loved ones lost in a plane crash without physical evidence, Chinese relatives of the missing marched Tuesday to the Malaysian Embassy, where they threw plastic water bottles, tried to rush the gate and chanted, “Liars!” The Chinese government, meanwhile, demanded that Malaysia turn over the satellite data it used to conclude that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down in the southern Indian Ocean with no survivors after turning back from its flight path to Beijing on March 8. Among the flight’s 239 passengers, 153 were Chinese nationals, making the incident a highly emotional one for Beijing, and the government’s demand reflected the desire among many Chinese relatives of passengers for more conclusive information on the plane’s fate. Nearly 100 relatives and their supporters marched to the embassy in the late morning, wearing white T-shirts that read “Let’s pray for

MH370” as they held banners and chanted for about three hours. “Tell the truth! Return our relatives!” they shouted. JAKARTA - Jakarta called Monday for a Saudi family to accept a substantial payment and halt the impending execution of an Indonesian maid on death row in the kingdom for murder. If the execution of Satinah Binti Jumadi Ahmad goes ahead, it could set back attempts by Indonesia and Saudi Arabia to mend ties damaged by the 2011 beheading of an Indonesian maid, who was also guilty of murder. Saudi Arabia is the world’s biggest destination for Indonesian maids, with around one million in the ultra-conservative kingdom. Officials in Jakarta expect Ahmad, sentenced to death in 2011 for murdering her employer’s wife and stealing money, to be executed in early April unless the victim’s family accepts the money offered and forgives her. Under Islamic sharia law followed in Saudi Arabia, the family of a victim can settle for “blood money” instead of an execution. However Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Wardana told reporters that contributions from the government and maid protection groups had not raised the required seven million riyal ($1.9

million), but only four million. “It is now in the hands of the victim’s family,” said Wardana, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, appealing for them to accept the lower payment. The Indonesian government had already succeeded in getting the execution delayed five times in the two and a half years since her conviction, officials said. The 2011 execution infuriated Indonesia, particularly as Saudi authorities failed to inform Jakarta beforehand. Indonesia placed a moratorium on sending new maids to Saudi Arabia following the beheading but the countries took a step towards overcoming their differences with the signing of an agreement last month to give maids in the kingdom better protection. Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of sharia law.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has banned Hollywood biblical epic “Noah” starring Russell Crowe, censors said Tuesday, the latest Muslim country to stop the film being screened due to concerns it contradicts Islamic values. Censors in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country said they decided to ban the film, which had been set for release Friday, as the depiction of prophets is forbidden under Islamic law. As well as being a biblical figure, Noah is also a prophet for Muslims. “We rejected the screening of the film in Indonesia,” Zainut Tauhid Saadi, a member of the Indonesian Censorship Board, told AFP.

“The visual depiction of a prophet is forbidden in Islam,” he said, adding: “The film will hurt both Christian and Muslim communities.” It came after the Paramount film based on the story of Noah’s ark, which stars Crowe as Noah and is directed by Darren Aronofsky, was banned by Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates earlier this month. Egypt’s top Islamic body, the Al-Azhar institute, has called for “Noah” not to be screened in the country. The film has also angered some Christian institutions in the United States due to Crowe’s reportedly unconventional portrayal of Noah. The ongoing controversy over the film, which also stars Jennifer Connolly and Emma Watson,

prompted Paramount to announce last month they would add an explanatory message to future marketing materials for the movie. It issued a joint statement with the US-based National Religious Broadcasters body, announcing the move “to help audiences better understand that the feature film is a dramatization of the major scriptural themes and not a line-by-line retelling of the Bible story”. THE HAGUE - President Barack Obama and top economic powers on Monday cancelled an upcoming G8 summit in Russia, seeking to deepen Moscow’s isolation over its intervention in the Ukraine crisis. After emergency talks called by Obama, it was announced that the G8 summit in Sochi in June would be replaced by a G7 meeting in Brussels, without Russian involvement. The G7 also threatened tougher sanctions against Russia for its annexation of Crimea, which has plunged relations between the West and Moscow to their lowest point since the Cold War. The meeting in The Hague came as Ukraine ordered its outnumbered troops to withdraw from Crimea as yet another of its bases was stormed. Earlier, the White House had said it was “very concerned” by the Russian troop build-up on the border. “We remain ready to intensify actions including coordinated sectoral sanctions that will have an increasingly significant impact on the Russian economy, if Russia continues to escalate this situation,” the G7 leaders said in a statement. The G7 “came together because of shared beliefs and shared responsibilities. Russia’s actions in recent weeks are not consistent with them. Under these circumstances, we will not participate in the planned Sochi summit.” But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov defiantly dismissed such a move as “no great tragedy” after separate talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Ukraine’s interim Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya -- the highest-level contacts between the two neighbours since the crisis erupted. “If our Western partners think that this format (the G8) has outlived itself, then so be it,” Lavrov told reporters. “We are not trying to hold on to this format, and we see no great tragedy if it does not meet,” he said, insisting that Crimea has “a right to self-determination”. Russia’s takeover of the region was not “malicious intent”, said Lavrov, but was to “protect the Russians who have been living there for hundreds of years”. Moscow was added to the G7 club of the US, Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Britain -- seen as the world’s top diplomatic and economic table -- in 1999 as a reward for choosing the path of democracy after the collapse of Communism. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the snubbing of Russia was “perhaps the most significant action because it shows that all these different countries have not accepted the annexation of Crimea as a fait accompli”. Fabius stressed that the G7 had agreed to work out how to reduce their energy dependency on Russia. “Because when we talk about sanctions, possible reactions, energy questions must be asked,” Fabius said. “We must be in a situation where we don’t depend as much as we do today on Russia,” he said.

The Hindus make various kind of ogoh-ogoh namely Kala Bang (red giant), Kala Ijo (green giant), Kala Ireng (black giant) and other form as the symbol of negative characters of human which

need to be put away so it won’t disturb mankind. The ogoh-ogoh went through a caru pebiakalaan, a ritual which has the meaning to return the bad character of the bhuta-kala to its origin. The ritual is continued by carrying the ogoh-ogoh around the village and turning on the catus pata (intersection) as the symbol of the time cycle towards the new Caka year. After the procession of Ngerupuk finish, the ogoh-ogoh is burn. A lecturer of Indonesian Hindu Institute Denpasar (IHDN), I Made Surada, said that the literary source regarding the ogoh-ogoh is not found until now. If referring to the content of Lontar Sundarigama which is related to Pengerupukan says “’amantukaken buta kala kabeh’’, the procession of ogoh-ogoh has tight relation with pengerupukan.

The nine Gods in Hindu also have nine form

of bhuta kala such as God Iswara has the form of Buta Jenggetan with white color,” Surada said. The head of IHDN Denpasar, Prof. Dr. Made Titib, said that in Hindu literary there is no statement about ogoh-ogoh. In Bali, ogohogoh was made fro the first time in 1980’s in the from of bhuta kala and the character of bhuta kala is destroyed during Pengerupukan. According to Titib, there is Dasera ritual in India where the people make ogoh-ogoh in the form of special character in the ancient Hindu story such as Rahwana, Kumbakarna, and others. He appreciated that the ogohogoh is the form of the creativity of the Balinese but in the procession of the parade, the people must put forward the safety and security of others and themselves. “We must keep Bali as the best tourism desti-

nation. We can not give bad image to the island,” he added. The head of Bali Hindu Association (Parisada), IGN Sudiana, said that after the parade, the ogoh-ogoh will given a holy water of penyomia so it will return to its neutral state and will not disturb human unless the ogoh-ogoh is given special offerings so another oferring must also given after the parade. “After the parade, the ogoh-ogoh can be burnt or dismantled so it can be used for the next Nyepi. However, if the makers want to display the ogoh-ogoh, it is possible but torn leafs must be added around it,” he added. Sudiana urged the Hindus to make the ogoh-ogoh suitable the concept of Hindu literature which is bhuta kala so it must be in the form of bhuta kala and not God or Goddess.

Prevent conflicts with ogoh-ogoh parade before Pengerupukan Bali Post

GIANYAR - The night of Pengerupukan is identical to the implementation of ogohogoh parade. The celebration of Nyepi often invites an apprehensiveness of conflict. It can tarnish the celebration of Nyepi that should be carried out solemnly by the Hindus. To prevent this, the implementation of ogoh-ogoh must be through a parade and be performed before the Pengerupukan. It was expressed by the committee chairman of the ogoh-ogoh parade of Tegallalang customary village, Made Dauh Wijana, Monday (Mar 23) amidst the rehearsal of the ogoh-ogoh parade and fragmentary show at Tegallalang Square. According to him, the tradition of Tegallalang village had taken place since ten years ago where the ogoh-ogoh parade was performed prior to the implementation of the Pengerupukan (two days before Nyepi Day). Previously, the implementation of ogohogoh at the village was also carried out at the night of Pengerupukan, but when a conflict occurred it was so difficult to resolve because of time constraints where the next day had been the Nyepi Day. “With the implementation before the Pengerupukan, when a conflict occurs there is still enough time to resolve it,” he said. Seeing such condition, Gianyar County made the ogoh-ogoh activity at Tegallalang a pilot project in the effort to prevent the unwanted things. Based on the implementation last year, the county government finally supported the implementation of the ogoh-ogoh

by conferring financial assistance worth IDR 675 million. The funds were distributed to seven hamlets denoting the participants of the ogoh-ogoh parade accompanied by the fragmentary show entitled Mayadenawa. Other than preventing conflict, the ogohogoh parade could also be implemented as a tour package that would surely be beneficial for every village. Meanwhile, the implementation coinciding with the period of campaign would become a challenge of its own. During this electoral campaign, the ogoh-ogoh parade was accompanied with fragmentary show without being contaminated by political interests. It was purely an art, customs and culture without any political interests. “Its pattern and rules have been clear so there is no longer a political contamination,” he said. DENPASAR - The occurrence of escaping patient or the one who leaves without settling the administration fees at Sanglah Hospital frequently occurs. The number of patients and visitors coming to this central referral hospital in Bali makes it a bit difficult to monitor the patient and his family intending to escape. Such escaping patient case occurred on Wednesday (Mar 19). The patient was on behalf of Sasongko Yudha with the address in Jakarta. Yudha was a patient who got traffic accident and has been treated at Sanglah Hospital for a month. Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, explained on Monday (Mar 24) that the patient came into hospital on Thursday (Feb 20). Based on information, Yudha got accident in Gianyar with his companion. “His companion was hospitalized in Gianyar, while Yudha was referred to Sanglah Hospital,” said Nariyantha. Originally, Yudha was identified as Mr. X because when the accident occurred he was not carrying any identity. After conscious and asked by the officer, it was found the name and phone number of his mother named Mrs. Puji.

The authority of Sanglah Hospital then informed to Puji if her son got an accident. “We asked for her presence to Sanglah Hospital because there is an action requiring the approval of the family,” said Nariyantha. Having contacted for several times, finally Mrs. Puji came after Yudha had been treated for nearly a month and allowed to go home. “Mother of the patient came to hospital on Monday (Mar 17). On the following day, with the reason of settling the paperwork his mother asked for permission to leave the patient in the room for a while,” said Nariyantha. During the day, Puji did not show up. The hospital officer had contacted and said she was administering the JKN. But on Wednesday (Mar 19), Yudha was not found either in the treatment room. “In that morning, the patient had a training of mobilization, but he was not in the room at noon,” said Nariyantha. The officials had looked for the patient around the hospital area, but did not find him. The administrative requirements that should be completed before going home was apparently not resolved yet by the patient’s family. THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The thrust of his diplomatic efforts still focused on Ukraine, President Barack Obama met Tuesday with a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin as he continued his efforts to isolate Moscow over its incursion into Crimea. In a last minute addition to his schedule, Obama sat down with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev in a long room at the U.S. embassy, with the two countries’ flags set up behind them. U.S. officials offered no details about the meeting’s agenda, but Nazarbayev is part of a Russia-centered economic bloc focused on Eurasia. As the leaders wrapped up their meeting, the White House released a joint statement from Obama and Nazarbayev that did not address the Ukraine situation, but focused instead on bilateral cooperation on nuclear security and nonproliferation — the theme of concurrent summit serving as the official purpose for Obama’s visit to the Netherlands. Kazakhstan is the second largest country by territory and economy to emerge from the former Soviet Union, but Kazakhstan’s energy resources and strong economy give it some independence from Moscow. Nazarbayev has maneuvered between Russia and the West during more than two decades in power.

Both Obama and Putin have already been in touch with Nazarbayev this month in the wake of the Crimean upheaval. Obama spoke by phone with the Kazakhstan leader on March 10. This effort is made in order there will be no rice sold under the government purchase price (HPP) at harvest time,” said the Regional Division Head of Bulog, Gede Rempiana, in Denpasar. He said that his party would purchase the rice of farmers at IDR 6,600 per kg for medium quality. However, based on experience in previous years, farmers in Bali rarely sold their products to Bulog because the market price was higher than the price offered by Bulog. “We offer the price of rice at IDR 6,600 per kg received at the warehouse with medium quality. However, farmers are usually reluctant to sell their rice to Bulog

because the market price on offer is much higher. Nevertheless, we are still optimistic the target of 5,000 tons will be achieved because the current production is abundant. The price will be closer to standard price so that farmers sell their rice to us,” he explained. According to him, in a year, the Bulog absorbed 35,000 tons of rice of farmers where most of the stock was allocated to meet the needs of rice for the poor (Raskin). The small rice uptake from local farmers would be covered with rice from outside Bali. “Bali is very strategic because it is close to the high rice-producing areas such as East Java. However, people do not need to worry because next four months we have a total stock of 9,700 tons,” he said. He explained that Balinese soci-

Melasti activities undertaken by people in the celebration of Nyepi would also be discussed in the meeting. “No matter how the results of meeting will be, all the parties should equally respect them,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Gianyar Electoral Commission, Anak Agung Gede Putra, responding to the rampant political party attributes ahead of the melasti procession, claimed he was unable to do much. In this case, the Electoral Commission could not ban it because it remained in the campaign period. This issue would be further coordinated with relevant parties because it also involved religious tolerance and commitment in maintaining the security and stability in the implementation of Nyepi. SINGARAJA - Ahead of Nyepi Day, the basic commodities in Buleleng begin to show off a significant price hike. One is them is the price of chili commencing to rise sharply. Currently, the price of chili in traditional market has reached IDR 100,000 per kg. This price hike has happened since three days ago. Even, the price hike has taken place since the past three months in North Bali. Due to this condition, most buyers that will need chili for the preparation of welcoming the Nyepi Day are forced to reduce the chili purchased from the usual amount. As observation of Bali Post to a number of traditional markets in Buleleng on Monday (Mar 24), the price of red chilies with the best quality and did not mix with green chili continued to rise. The best quality chili was sold for IDR 100,000 per kg. Meanwhile, the chili of medium quality with the mixture of green chilies was sold for IDR 80,000 per kg. With this condition, the buyers who were preparing the celebration of the Nyepi Day remaining a week to go are forced to keep buying even though the price was so high. Buyers could only reduce the amount of chili to be purchased from the usual amount. One of the local traders, I Ketut Daris, said the recent price hike of chili slightly made difficult to sell to the buyers. According to him, the increase had happened from the suppliers where they offered a more expensive price than usual one. As a result, this condition forced him to raise the price of chili. Even though the price of chili continued to rise, the price of other spices like large chili remained stable at IDR 20,000 per kg. The other spices such as onion and garlic showed a stable price condition and had not showed an increase. “Since the price from the collector has gone up, we are forced to increase the selling price to consumers. The peak of price hike has occurred since the past three days,” he said. Although the price of chili was expensive, added Daris, the demand from consumers was still crowded, especially before the Nyepi Day where buyers remained to need chili for their seasoning ingredients during the celebration. Since the price of chili increased, consumers reduced their purchase from the usual amount. “The demand remains crowded, now buyers tend to reduce their purchase because it is quite expensive,” he added. Meanwhile, another buyer named Kadek Suryani claimed to resign and could not do much after knowing the price of chili had skyrocketed. She could only reduce the purchase of chili from the usual amount. Besides, she also tried to use other additives like pepper, so she did not need to use chili in large quantities. “Now, I maximally purchase chili of 100 grams. A corpse found floating in subak waterways Bali Post DENPASAR - Residents around the waterways of Subak Yeh Tegal Jaya, Abiansemal, Badung, was shocked by the finding of a floating corpse, Monday (Mar 24). Having been investigated, in fact the victim was a housewife named Ni Nyoman Murdi, 50, living at Puseh hamlet, Angantaka village, Abiansemal, Badung. Spokesperson of Badung Police, Made Dina, said the victim’s corpse was first discovered by Nyoman Bagiana and Jeri Puji. Both residents who were washing clothes shocked

after seeing a figure floating not far from their location of washing. “The discovery took place around 09:30 a.m.,” he said. Once checked, said Made Dina, the corpse was in fact Ni Nyoman Murdi living at Puseh hamlet, Angantaka village, Abiansemal, Badung. The victim was directly examined by medical team but her life was already beyond help. Further, Made Dina said that his members received information that the victim previously left home and carried clothes to be washed. The victim usually washed in the

waterways of Subak Yeh Tegal Jaya located in the east of the victim’s house. “The victim was known to wash at eight o’clock in the morning, but after that the victim never returned,” he said. Allegedly when the victim was washing clothes the epilepsy she suffered for long time relapsed. As a result, the victim fell unconscious and immediately drifted about 500 meters away and was then found by local residents. “The victim has often been prohibited by her children from washing considering the epilepsy disease she suffered,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Shakira’s domination in America has dwindled since she became a hip-swiveling goddess of festive pop hits like “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie.” Already a superstar in her native Colombia, the multitalented singer-songwriter-instrumentalist took the American pop scene by storm when she made her U.S. language debut in 2001 with personal, rich songs about romance and more. But her recent albums haven’t matched the spark, edge and charisma from her work a decade ago, and her new self-titled release, while enjoyable at times, doesn’t showcase this Grammy-winning, Golden Globe-nominated superstar in the right light. “Shakira,” her tenth album, features the 37year-old taking a back seat as lead songwriter and producer, and that doesn’t come off as a wise move. “Dare (La La La),” helmed by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and others, sounds like a Jennifer Lopez song, and that’s not a compliment (sorry, Jenny). While Shakira’s stint as a judge on “The Voice” has been pleasurable to watch, her duet with fellow mentor Blake Shelton on the country-feeling “Medicine” is a bore, though it was co-written by Academy Award nominee and hit country songwriter Hillary Lindsey. Even the duet with Rihanna, the up-tempo lead single “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” comes off as a cry for a pop hit. The song lacks energy though two superstars are part of it, and the collaboration feels forced (Rihanna and Shakira are both signed to Roc Nation management). The album’s lyrics also lack emotion and depth. It’s a far stretch from Shakira’s earlier songs, such as her Latin pop breakthrough “Estoy Aqui (I’m Here)” or the part-gritty, part- bouncy “La Tortura.” The new album follows in the footsteps of her last two albums, 2009’s “She Wolf” and 2010’s “Sale el Sol,” which have bright spots, but still didn’t carry the oomph and appeal of her earlier work. Shakira does move the needle a bit on the reggae-laced “Cut Me Deep,” which features the band Magic! Nasir Atweh, the band’s lead singer, is part of the songwriting duo The Messengers, who have penned hits for Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Pitbull. “Spotlight,” co-written by Lindsey and produced by Greg Kurstin, sounds arena-ready, which is excellent for an entertaining performer like Shakira. And the album’s most honest moment is “23,” a sweet ode to her 1-year-old son’s father, soccer player Gerard Pique, who is 10 years younger than Shakira (he was 23 when they met). CANBERRA — Time is running out to find the crucial keys that could solve the mystery of how and why Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down. After the excruciating 17-day wait for confirmation that the Boeing 777 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, searchers are racing to locate the so-called black boxes before a battery-powered ping they emit fades away. By law, the boxes with must be able to send those signals for at least 30 days following a crash. But experts say they can continue making noise for another 15 days or so beyond that, depending upon the strength of the black box battery

at the time of the crash. Without the black boxes — the common name for the voice and data recorders normally attached to a fuselage — it would be virtually impossible for investigators to definitively say what caused the crash. The location of the plane is still unknown more than two weeks after it crashed, although Malaysian authorities say a British satellite company has pinpointed its last position in the Indian Ocean, where

several countries have reported finding floating debris. It’s now up to experts in ocean currents and weather patterns to give searchers their best estimate on where the plane actually went down, which is where the black boxes — they’re really red cylinders — are likely to be located. “We’ve got to get lucky,” said John Goglia, a former member of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. “It’s a race to get to the area in time to catch the black box pinger while it’s still working.” To “catch” the signal, searchers will be putting to use a high-tech listening device loaned by the U.S. Navy.

One of the Navy’s Towed Pinger Locators is already en route to the search area. It’s a 30-inch-long cylindrical microphone that’s slowly towed underwater in a grid pattern behind a commercial ship. It will pick up any black box ping emitted from, on average, 1 mile away — but could hear a ping from 2 miles away depending upon a number of factors, from ocean conditions to topography to if the black boxes are buried or not. The listening device is attached to about 20,000 feet of cable and is guided through the ocean depths by a yellow, triangular carrier with a shark fin on top. It looks like a stingray and has a wingspan of 3

feet. The device sends data up that long cable every half second, where both human operators and computers aboard a ship carefully listen for any strong signals and record a ping’s location. The ship keeps towing the device over the grid so that operators can triangulate the strongest pings — and hopefully locate the exact location of the black boxes. Aside from the Towed Pinger Locator, an Australian navy support vessel, the Ocean Shield, is expected to arrive in the search zone within three or four days, officials said. It’s equipped with acoustic detection equipment that will also listen for pings.
