LOS ANGELES - Oscar-nominated celebrities were urged on Wednesday to skip a $55,000 trip to Israel offered as part of an awards gift bag. Two U.S.-based groups campaigning for an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian Territories made the plea in a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times that appeared five days before the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. “#SkipTheTrip. Don’t endorse Israeli apartheid,” said the ad, sponsored by the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and Jewish Voice for Peace. The ad said the trip, which is partially paid for by the Israeli government, was part of a larger “’Brand Israel’ strategy to distract from almost 50 years of illegal occupation of Palestinian land.” “As was the case many years ago in South Africa, celebrities are being asked to refrain from whitewashing apartheid policies,” Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, said in a statement on Wednesday. The trip is one of the most expensive items in a swag bag handed out to the five Oscar-nominated directors and 20 lead and supporting actor and actress nominees, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sylvester Stallone, Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Matt Damon and Kate Winslet.

The gift bag is not affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars. The Academy last week filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles-based Distinctive Assets accusing the gifting group of promoting the bag as official Oscars swag. The Israeli government earlier this month confirmed it was funding $15,000 to $18,000 of each 10-day trip as a means of offsetting news coverage of the country’s troubles. “These are the most senior people in the film industry in Hollywood and leading opinion-formers who we are interested in hosting,” said Israeli Tourism Minister Yariv Levin. “They will experience the country first-hand and not through the media.” It was not immediately known whether any of the Oscar-nominated directors, actors and actresses will take up the offer, which must be declared to U.S. tax authorities. “Creed” supporting actor Stallone signed a pro-Israel petition during the 2104 Gaza war, while “Bridge of Spies” nominee Rylance has signed a petition circulated by Artists for Palestine UK which calls for a cultural boycott of Israel. Recipients of rice for the poor potentially not on target DENPASAR - Community Empowerment Board and Village Government (BPMPD) of Bali found a significant discrepancy in the data related to recipients of rice for the poor (raskin) program. As a result, the number of rice for the poor assistance is likely to exceed targeted households (RTS). In other words, the recipient of rice for the poor is potentially not on target. “There are significant discrepancies in the data between the data of the district and the data of the Social Protection Program (PPLS) of central government,” said the Chief of BPMPD Bali, Ketut Lihadnyana, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Feb. 24). He found the differences in the data after making dissemination of the rice for the poor program to a number of districts and municipality in Bali. In Badung, for example, the PPLS recorded 9,883 recipients of targeted household, while the data owned by local government only recorded 9,043 targeted households or there is a discrepancy of 840 targeted households. Likewise, Gianyar district recorded 21,285 targeted households.

In 2016, the ration of rice for the poor received by Bali reached 27,346,320 kg. It is distributed to 151, 924 targeted households spreading over nine districts and one municipality in Bali. This is always a way to express support for renewable energies” he concluded. This garbage-fed electrical generator will also indirectly increase the efficiency of garbage management and will prevent the garbage dump from becoming full too quickly. Until now, garbage has only been dealt with using the ‘sanitary landfill’ system that condenses garbage heaps to about 80 cm and then covers them with 30 cm of soil. “Until now we have been using this method, but eventually the landfill would inevitably be filled to capacity and a new site would have to be found. If garbage can be used to generate electricity, garbage management will be greatly improved”, Parwata explained. The Landih landfill covers some 4,74 hectares that can hold some 550 thousand square meters. The only regency that routinely dumps their garbage here is Bangli. The dumpsite also has a water treatment system located downstream that renders the dirty water clear. (kmb45)

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. Milan fashion week opens with eclectic, embellished looks

MILAN - Six days of catwalk shows began in Milan on Wednesday with Italian luxury brands Gucci, Fay and Roberto Cavalli among the first to show the creations their designers hope will fill women’s wardrobes next winter. In a first, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi kicked off Milan Fashion Week with an industry lunch as international journalists and buyers descended on the city, home to fashion giants like Giorgio Armani and Prada. Gucci, which last week reported a forecast-beating sales rebound in the fourth quarter, presented a vibrant and colourful autumn/winter 2016/2017 collection, which designer Alessandro Michele called “Rhizomatic Scores”. From one-coloured outfits -including a pink furry coat teamed with pink tights, shoes, scarf and bag -- to clashing print combinations and designs emblazoned with snake patterns, Michele showed a selection of eclectic looks. Models wore sequined skirts, tailored trouser suits, Chinese-style silk dresses, shiny brocade coats, capes, brightly coloured tights and a range of hats. The looks were

accessorised with an array of bags, platform heels and large glasses. At Fay, which is part of the Tod’s luxury goods group, creative directors Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi looked to the U.S. Western coast for their daywear. “The inspiration is the new Californian generation ... mixed with the new Italian generation,” Aquilano told Reuters. He said the line included “beautiful Italian coats but with a more folk take and with embroidery that is reminiscent of the great American plains”. Of course we will adopt this proposal. AMLAPURA - Subagan customary village in Karangasem has a number of unique traditions. The local villagers enforce ngempet ron and busung tradition (prohibition of using palm leaves and young coconut leaves) for 14 days from Tuesday (Feb. 23) at 16.00 through Saturday (Mar. 5).

The prohibition, according to the chief of customary village, Putu Toya, is enforced in relation to the ngusaba ritual at the local Dalem Temple whose summit will fall on Sunday (Mar. 6). The tradition starts with village meeting in order to deliver announcement and make a decision and then is followed by

the closing of entrance into the temple. During the enforcement of the prohibition, residents are not allowed to hold pancha yajna or say prayers to the temple in the village area using oblations. In essence, all the residents must accompany Ida Bhatara Dalem to meditate and no one is allowed to bother.

Putu Toya added that during the prayers in order the ritual taking place on Monday (Feb. 22) until March 10 is successful all the residents are prohibited from holding cremation and related rituals. However, if residents have the death of family member they can do makingsan ring pertiwi (bury the corpse) carried out before sunrise

or after sunset. Previously, in relation to the implementation of ngesanga desa a few weeks ago, residents in the villages within the town of Amlapura have held ngempet-rah (prohibition to shed blood) like butchering animals or cockfight for 14 days in the territory of the village. (013)

Military troops oversee hill and forest territory in Bali DENPASAR - Various measures are undertaken by security forces, both police and military personnel and others to secure the area of Bali from radical group or terrorist attack. Other than tightening at the entrances into Bali and other vital objects, the hill and forest areas in Bali also get a serious concern from security forces, especially military troops. SINGARAJA - Celukan Bawang’s marine police poasted five no-swimming and no-fishing signs at Celukan Bawang Beach after 35 year-old Made Suardana from Dinas Tajen Hamlet, Tejen village, Penebel Tabanan drowned there last Wednesday (Feb 2) at 16:30. Suardana along with three children had been fishing there when one of the children (who was his nephew) fell into the water. Suardana immediately jumped into the water to try to rescue the child who he believed could not swim. Unfortunately after an hour and a half of struggle Surdana himself was drowned. The SAR team and the Marine Police eventually found his body. The police do not want to see such an incident happen again. After investigating the site, they discovered

that the water basin in the bay, to the south of the dock there, is quite deep. In order to prevent anyone else from becoming a victim of the deep water, police posted sign prohibiting people from swimming, playing or fishing at this dangerous location. “We are appealing to the public not to violate this prohibition by playing near Celukan Bawang harbour. The waters south of the cement dock are extremely deep and there has already been one victim”, said head of Celukan Bawang’s marine police, AKP Ketut

Australia warns of possible terror attack in Indonesia

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia’s government warned on Thursday that terrorists may be in the advanced stages of preparing attacks in Indonesia, and urged travelers to exercise a high level of caution when visiting the southeast Asian nation, including the popular tourist island of Bali.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued the travel advisory, which said only that there were “recent indications” an attack may be in the advanced planning stages, and warned people to be vigilant at places of worship and during holiday periods. The department did not raise its overall warning level for Australians visiting the country. The advice comes just days after Australia warned that terrorists may be plotting attacks in and around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s largest city. In its warning for Indonesia, the department cited the Jan. 14 attacks in the capital, Jakarta, that left eight people dead, saying the assaults demonstrated an ongoing threat. “We continue to receive information that indicates that terrorists may be planning attacks in Indonesia,” the department wrote. “An attack could occur anywhere at any time.” The agency did not immediately to a request for more details. In recent years, Indonesian counterterrorism forces successfully eradicated the extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah that was responsible for several attacks, including the 2002 bombings of bars in Bali which killed 202 people, as well as two hotel bombings in Jakarta in 2009 that killed seven people. Indonesia’s government has outlawed the Islamic State group, but there are fears that militants who travel abroad will return home and carry out attacks in Indonesia. This also poses a support for renewable energy program,” he said. Indirectly this waste power plant will make the waste management at the landfill more optimal and the existing land will not be fully occupied quickly. All this time, the

waste is only managed by the application of sanitary landfill, namely by compaction to a height of 50 to 80 cm and then covered with soil of about 30 cm. “So far, it is still using it and one day the landfill will be definitely full. As solution, it will be looked for a new place. If it can be taken advantage for power generation, the waste management will be getting better,” he said. Based on information compiled, the landfill area spreads across at 4.75 hectares and has a capacity of about 550,000 cubic meters. So far, it is only the Bangli district routinely disposing of waste here. It has also been equipped with waste water processing equipment located at the downstream. BUSINESS Eurozone inflation revised down, bolstering stimulus case

LONDON — Inflation across the 19-country eurozone was lower than previously thought in January, official figures showed Thursday, in a development that’s likely to further strengthen expectations that the European Central Bank will back more stimulus next month. Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency said the annual rate of inflation in January was 0.3 percent, against its previous estimate of 0.4 percent. The revision was not anticipated in the markets and comes ahead of Monday’s first estimate for February. The figure could go a long way to determining what the ECB does at its next policy meeting March 10. The ECB is in the midst of a massive stimulus program that is designed to get inflation back toward its target of just below 2 percent. By keeping interest rates low and pumping money into the economy via a bond-buying program worth over a trillion euros, the ECB is hoping to generate enough economic activity to get prices rising. ECB President Mario Draghi has repeatedly hinted that the central bank is ready to consider more support for the economy. Inflation has been below target since February 2013 for a variety of reasons, not least the fall in oil prices. The consensus in markets is that the rate will drop to 0.1 percent in February because of renewed weakness in oil prices, which analysts say will seal the deal on further stimulus. “Caution is very much the watchword for Draghi and co. at present,” said Dennis de Jong, managing director of UFX.com. Underlying price pressures in the eurozone are very soft. Even after stripping out the volatile items of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, the eurozone’s core inflation rate remains below target at 1 percent. On an individual basis, six of the eurozone’s countries — Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain — are currently recording inflation rates below zero.(ap)

NEW YORK — The stock market reversed steep declines and ended slightly higher on Wednesday, thanks in part to a pickup in the price of crude oil. Indexes continue to be weighed down by bank stocks, which remain under pressure due to economic unease and worries about the amount of loans on their books to struggling oil and gas companies. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 53.21 points, or 0.3 percent, to 16,484.99. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 8.53 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,929.80 and the Nasdaq composite rose 39.02 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,542.61. Stocks had been dramatically lower earlier in the day, with the Dow down as much as 265 points. However as oil prices recovered through the day, so did energy stocks and the broader market. After being down nearly 4 percent earlier, oil closed up 28 cents, or 1 percent, to $32.15 a barrel. The energy component of the S&P 500, which had been down roughly 2 percent, closed up 1 percent. “As goes oil, so goes everything,” said Ian Winer, co-head of equities trading at Wedbush Securities. The market’s only place of weakness by the end of trading was the financial sector. Bank stocks had some of the biggest losses, and the financial services component of the S&P 500 lost 0.8 percent. Despite substantial gains in recent days, many investors remain hesitant to commit more money to the market and don’t need much reason to sell, analysts say. Bank stocks are often a proxy for how well an economy is expected to do, since loans can sour during an economic slowdown. While oil rose on Tuesday, the pressure on the commodity prices seems to be ever downward.(ap)

BEIJING — China faces pressure to reassure nervous world markets about its economic and currency management at Friday’s gathering in Shanghai of finance ministers and central bankers from the United States, Europe and other major nations. Such meetings of the Group of 20 major rich and developing economies tend to yield no major policy changes. But with anxiety rising over lackluster global growth, investors are looking for reassurance from Beijing. Chinese leaders want a bigger role in guiding global finance and trade but their reputation for economic competence has been battered by turmoil in their financial markets. Economists and other governments complain Beijing has fueled global market volatility by failing to communicate policy changes clearly. A collapse in Chinese stock prices last year wiped out some $5 trillion in paper wealth, and the country’s main market index fell by an unusually large daily margin of 6.4 percent on Thursday. Beijing has allowed its yuan to decline against the dollar since August, sparking concern, despite repeated Chinese denials, that the currency will be weakened further to boost exports. That has driven an outflow of capital from China that spiked to a record $135 billion in December. In a report ahead of the Shanghai meeting, the IMF urged G-20 leaders

U.S. to present draft UN sanctions resolution on North Korea

UNITED NATIONS - The United States will submit to the U.N. Security Council on Thursday a draft resolution that would expand sanctions against North Korea over its latest nuclear test, a spokesman for the U.S. mission to the United Nation said. “Ambassador (Samantha) Power intends to submit for consideration by the Security Council a draft sanctions resolution in response to (North Korea’s) recent nuclear test and subsequent proscribed ballistic missile launch,” spokesman Kurtis Cooper said in a statement. “We look forward to working with the council on a strong and comprehensive response to the DPRK’s (North Korea’s) latest series of tests aimed at advancing their nuclear weapons program,” he said. On Wednesday council diplomats said the United States and China had agreed on a draft resolution and hoped to put it to a vote in the 15-nation council in the coming days. The two veto powers had been negotiating on the text for the past seven weeks following Pyongyang’s fourth nuclear test on Jan. 6.

“It’s a substantive, long, full draft,” a senior council diplomat said. In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said “important progress” had been made on the resolution and that “hopefully consensus can be reached soon”. “We hope and believe this new resolution can help effectively constrain North Korea from further developing its nuclear missile program,” Hua told a regular press briefing on Thursday. The draft resolution is expected to call for the blacklisting of a number of individuals and entities, diplomats said. They were reluctant to provide further details. North Korea’s Ministry of Atomic Energy Industry and its National Aerospace Development Agency or ‘NADA’, the body responsible for February’s rocket launch, will be amongst the

sanctioned entities, South Korea’s Yonhap news reported. The secretive General Reconnaissance Bureau, already sanctioned by the United States for its suspected role in the 2014 cyber attack on Sony Pictures, was also included in the blacklist, Yonhap said. The council is scheduled to discuss the U.N. North Korea sanctions regime on Thursday at 3 p.m. (2000 GMT), the U.N. press office said. China and the United States have had different views on how strong the response should be to North Korea since Pyongyang’s nuclear test last month, with Washington urging harsh punitive measures and Beijing emphasizing dialogue and milder U.N. steps confined to non-proliferation. Western diplomats told Reuters that limiting North Korean access to international ports was among the measures Washington was pushing Beijing to accept. With eye on China’s rise, Australia to boost defence spending by $21 bln

SYDNEY - Australia will increase defence spending by nearly A$30 billion ($21.6 billion) over the next 10 years, seeking to protect its strategic and trade interests in the Asia-Pacific as the United States and its allies grapple with China’s rising power. Defence spending will rise to A$195 billion, or 2 percent of GDP, by 2021-2022, as Australia buys new equipment including frigates, armoured personnel carriers, strike fighter jets, drones and submarines, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told an armed forces audience in Canberra on Thursday. The defence strategic plan was designed in mind of the changing nature of regional security, particularly China’s economic and military rise and an increased U.S. focus on the Asia-Pacific, Turnbull said. “The United States will remain the pre-eminent global military power over the next two decades,” Turnbull said. “It will continue to be Australia’s most important strategic partner through our longstanding alliance, and the active presence of the United States will continue to underpin the stability of our region.” The announcement riled Beijing, where the Foreign Ministry expressed “dissatisfaction” with Australia’s “negative” remarks on the South China Sea and its military development. Amnesty call for moratorium in death penalty in Indonesia JAKARTA - The international human rights organization Amnesty International calls for death penalty moratorium in Indonesia with long term goal of abolishing death penalty. “Amnesty International asks the Indonesian Government for moratorium in death penalty and to review the court verdicts of death penalty,” Deputy Director for Southeast Asian Campaign of Amnesty International Josef Benedict said when launching global human rights annual report here on Wednesday. Benedict quoted the Amnesty International report as saying that in 2015, the Indonesian government executed 14 death prisoners on death row and more is to follow this year. He said death penalty places the life of prisoners on death row in risk and put their families in distress, fear and heavy pressure. Benedict also called for an end to whipping punishment,

which he described as inhumane, cruel, insulting to human dignity, adopted in Aceh. He said in 2015, around 108 people, who were found guilty of gambling, alcohol drinking and adultery, were punished with whipping under sharia law in Aceh. In October 2015, Qanun Jinayat, was enacted in Aceh a punishment for committing homosexuality and adultery respectively with whipping 100 times and 30 times. “Qanun Jinayat in Aceh is against human rights and we call on the central government to annul the law,” Benedict said. Earlier Pope Fransiskus called for death penalty moratorium ahead of an international conference of “A World Without the Death Penalty” began in Rome last Monday. 550 corruption cases reported in 2015: ICW

JAKARTA - Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) has reported that of the 550 cases of graft that entered the investigation phase in 2015, 308 cases are now in the first semester and 242 cases are in the second half of the year. While presenting data about corruption cases being handled here on Wednesday, ICW Investigation Division Staff Wana Alamsyah said in 2015, the losses accrued to the state as a result of graft amounted to Rp31.077 trillion, largely attributed to misuse of funds. “In 134 cases, that formed 24 percent of the total cases, the modus operandi used was misuse of official funds, causing a total loss of Rp803.3 billion to the state,” he said. Second method that was widely used was embezzlement. That happened in 107 cases, causing total losses of Rp412.4 billion, followed by 104 cases in which cost was marked up, causing losses of

Rp455 billion. Abuse of authority was the fourth main method used in 102 cases, in which the state suffered losses of Rp991.8 billion. According to Wana, corruption practices were more prevalent in the provincial financial sectors with 105 cases and Rp385.5 billion worth of losses. Most of the corruption suspects were ministerial and local government officials, directors and commissioners of private companies, heads of agencies, members of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Assembly (DPRD), as well as the village heads or chiefs. Referring to the handling of cor-

ruption cases by law enforcement officials, ICW mentioned that the attorney was handling as many as 369 cases or 67.4 percent of the cases with total losses of Rp1.2 trillion, the police were handling 151 cases or 27 percent with Rp1.1 trillion losses, and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) was managing 30 cases or 5 percent with a total of Rp722.6 billion as losses incurred by the state. Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the Corruption Division at the National Police detective corps, Sr. Comr. Erwanto Kurniadi, refuted the data compiled by ICW, saying the number of cases handled by the police was more than what had been reported. “In 2015, we handled as many as 972 graft cases which had completed the P21 stage, involving total losses to the state worth Rp437 billion,” he stated. According to Karim, awareness in cyber governance and security is still low in Indonesia due to which the number of crimes, such as hacking is quite high. He noted that the high number of cybercrimes is influenced by the massive growth in the number of internet users in Indonesia. Silmy remarked that IT-based crimes could be identified as a non-conventional threat that could affect the sovereignty of a

country even if there is no territorial violation as the attack comes from outside the area. Silmy noted that Pindad had prepared several human resources, some 20-100 people, to strengthen defense and cyber security. Pindad would embrace hackers to defend the nations interests, including safeguarding economic and state sovereignty. According to data obtained from the Indonesia Security Incident Response Team on Internet Infrastructure, there were 48.8 million cyberattacks in 2014. Hamilton against move towards heavier cars

BARCELONA - Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has condemned plans to introduce heavier cars in 2017 and criticised rulemakers for failing to consult drivers. A list of proposed bodywork changes for 2017 published by the governing FIA on Wednesday envisaged car weights increasing from 702kg to 722kg including bigger tyres which accounted for an estimated five kg.

The measures are part of a package of sweeping changes aimed at livening up the sport with faster, louder and more challenging cars, which will also be wider. “I don’t agree with the changes that have been made over many

years,” Mercedes driver Hamilton told reporters after the third day of pre-season testing on Wednesday. “I think the drivers should be consulted more. We have a feeling in the car and what could be made better. We do know what does not feel good and what to improve,” added the 31-year-old Briton. Hamilton said cars were already too heavy and should be made

ZURICH - British Member of Parliament Damian Collins used parliamentary privilege on Tuesday to accuse FIFA presidential candidate Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of taking development project funds to finance an election bid. The claims, made in a speech in the U.K. House of Commons, were swiftly rejected by Salman who is battling Gianni Infantino, the Swiss general secretary of European soccer body UEFA, and three other candidates for the top job in world football. Conservative MP Collins, a supporter of the campaign group ‘New FIFA Now’, made the allegations relating to Salman’s attempt in 2009 to be elected to the FIFA executive committee and his 2013 successful election to the presidency of the Asian Football Confederation. FIFA will vote on Friday for a new president to replace Sepp Blatter, who has been banned from the game for eight years. Collins, who made his allegations in the form of a petition in the House Of Commons, alleged Salman had misused FIFA funds meant for developing football. “In August 2009 Sheikh Salman, then Bahrain FA president, was accused of using FIFA financed sports development budgets to fund his unsuccessful

campaign for FIFA executive committee election,” Collins told parliament. “In a leaked letter received by the Al Bilad newspaper it was claimed that Sheikh Salman had spent upwards of 850,000 dinars (1.6 million GBP) on his campaign and that some of his money had come from FIFA financed football development projects,” said Collins, citing two FIFA ‘GOAL programmes’. Reuters was not immediately able to verify Collins’s claim regarding the newspaper report and the leaked letter. It was not clear who was the author of the letter. FIFA GOAL programmes contain financing for specific projects and are not intended for general use by a federation or an official. FIFA declined to comment and FIFA’s Ethics Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Sheikh Salman has and had no knowledge whatsoever of any inducements offered, or of any payments made by the OCA to any football associations and absolutely no evidence has been forthcoming to show this to have been the case,” the statement said, noting that Salman had won the AFC presidential election convincingly with 33 of the 46 votes. Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has said he has not lived up to expectations since his big-money transfer from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, but is working hard to improve. Memphis joined United in June for a reported 25 million pounds ($35 million) after finishing the previous campaign as the Dutch league’s top scorer with 22 goals, but has struggled to settle in England. FIFA reduces bans for Blatter, Platini from 8 to 6 years

ZURICH — Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini had their bans from soccer reduced from eight years to six by FIFA’s appeal body on Wednesday, two days before the sport’s ruling body tries to turn the page on years of scandals by electing a new president. Blatter and Platini were initially found guilty of wrongdoing by FIFA’s independent ethics committee, which is led by a German judge, over a previously-secret 2011 financial transaction. Platini, the UEFA president, said not being cleared was an “insulting decision, shameful and a denial of rights” - and announced he will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Blatter, as FIFA president, authorized a payment of 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million) to Platini which was found to be unethical and a conflict of interest. But following hearings last week, an in-house appeal committee comprising members of federations voting in Friday’s presidential election decided to relax the suspensions. The committee is headed by Larry Mussenden of Bermuda, who is currently campaigning to win a May vote to become president of CONCACAF and a FIFA vice president. “The appeal committee considered that Mr. Platini’s and Mr. Blatter’s activities and the services they had rendered to FIFA, UEFA and football in general over the years should deserve appropriate recognition as a mitigating factor,” FIFA said in a statement. Blatter said in a statement that he was “deeply disappointed” with the verdict. Having hoped to be cleared

in time to preside over the electoral congress on Friday, Blatter might have run out of time for an urgent CAS hearing. Both Blatter and Platini have constantly denied wrongdoing and claimed they had a verbal deal for additional salary that former France great Platini would receive for working as Blatter’s presidential adviser from 1999-2002. Platini had been the leading candidate to succeed Blatter in FIFA’s emergency election before the payment was revealed in September. “The reasons given against me are baseless, trumped up and surreal, given the facts and explanations that I gave during the hearing of the appeals board,” Platini said in a statement released through his legal team. “This decision is in reality a political decision taken by the FIFA administration.” He added: “I am the victim of a system that had only one goal: To prevent me from becoming FIFA president in order to protect certain interests that I was about to bring into question.” Platini said he would pursue all possible means to appeal, starting with CAS, and that he had asked his legal team to launch an appeal to the Lausanne-based court “without waiting.” Platini has previously said he asked for a salary of 1 million Swiss francs when approached in 1998 to work for the newly-elected Blatter. Blatter said there was a contract for 300,000 Swiss francs, the same as FIFA’s then secretary general in line with its salary structure, plus a “gentleman’s agreement” to get the rest later. (ap)

EINDHOVEN — Ten-man PSV Eindhoven battled to a 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, comfortably surviving more than 20 minutes after a red card for striker Gaston Pereiro. PSV coach Phillip Cocu said before the match that both sides would likely settle for 0-0, but he was far happier than Diego Simeone with the goalless stalemate after PSV held on following Pereiro’s dismissal for two senseless fouls. “I am very satisfied with this result,” Cocu said. “I said beforehand that if we could keep a clean sheet at home it would put us in a good position for the second leg.” With its numerical advantage from the 68th minute, Atletico pressed forward relentlessly but could not find a way through PSV’s defense. “The only thing we missed was scoring a goal,” Simeone said.
